Traditionally, cruise ships have visited in spring and summer, but over the last few years Norway has established itself as a popular cruise destination also in the winter. From its humble beginning with 1 cruise in 2009; all of 13 cruises from different cruise lines visited in 2014 enabling cruise guests from all over the world to enjoy the pleasures and excitement of winter activities in Norway. The magical Northern Lights – the Aurora Borealis – fascinates visitors in winter when the sun does not come above the horizon for months in the far north. However, Norway in winter is far more than searching for the illusive Lady Aurora. Amongst others, it is trying your hand at dogsledding, driving snow mobile for the first time, skiing, admire the icy cold beauty of an Ice Hotel and visiting and learning about the indigenous people of Norway; the Sami people.

With the world’s second longest coast line stretching more than 100.915 kilometres, Norway offers unique possibilities for sailing schedules with various length and content all year. With around 40 ports and destinations, Norway has something on offer for every taste, for every brand and for every season. WELCOME TO NORWAY IN ALL SEASONS!

The Ancient Trail The Ancient Trail is Norway’s largest concentration of ancient monuments from the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages including rock art, stone circles, and fortified hamlets. The landmark Solberg Tower stands as a gateway to this proud heritage. It has been designed as a “living” meeting place, which can serve as a focal point for activities. Cultural heritage is integrated into the architecture. Comprehensive accessibility, including lift to the panorama platform. Outer Hvaler National Park – the first Norwegian Maritime Park The Hvaler-Fredrikstad archipelago boasts a rich diversity of species both on land and underwater. The area is also attractive for outdoor pursuits. Many people enjoy it as a summer paradise, but its scenery and natural history also have much to offer the rest of the year. Europe’s largest coastal coral reef is to be found here. The park is one of Norway’s 15 National Parks and the first maritime park, and has exhibitions, films, and samples of species. Fredriksten Festning – the King of Fortresses Construction of Fredriksten began in 1661 after Norway ceded the Bohuslän region to Sweden in 1658. Fredriksten is Norway’s largest and most renowned border fortress, majestically located above Halden. It offers fantastic views of the town and fjord, and far into what once was enemy territory.
Christmas House in Drøbak & Oscarsborg Fortress Drøbak, located along the eastern shores of the Oslo Fjord is to many Norwegians known as the Christmas town of Norway. The many old wooden houses together with shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants make the old town Drøbak unique and worth a visit. 200 years ago Drøbak was an important exporter of ice and timber which made the business flourish and prosperous merchants laid the foundation of the city as we know it today. In Drøbak you will find Tregaardens Julehus, Norway’s first Christmas House open all year, and Santa’s post office. Over 20,000 letters are received every year from children worldwide. Many of these can be seen if you visit the Tourist Information in Drøbak. Only five to ten minutes by ferry from Drøbak is Oscarsborg Fortress, situated right in the middle of the Oslo Fjord. Oscarsborg Fortress is known to most Norwegians as the fortification that sank the German cruiser Blücher during the Second World War. Today Oscarsborg is open to the public and in addition to the museum and the original fortifications there are several restaurants and a hotel.

The shortcut to the Norwegian fjords Located in the south-western corner of Norway, the Stavanger region is indeed the shortcut to the Norwegian fjords. Nothing is far away, and cruise ships dock in the very city centre, near the oldest part of the town, Old Stavanger. Just a short stroll away is the lovely Stavanger Cathedral, and the charming city centre with its cobbled pedestrian streets. Lysefjord with the iconic Pulpit Rock is just an hour’s boat trip away from the city. The Stavanger region was where Norway once became united into one kingdom in a Viking battle in Hafrsfjord in 872 AD. The city is rich in cultural experiences, having been the European capital of culture in 2008. Stavanger is now the 3rd largest Norwegian port of call for cruiseliners. It has become a popular stop on cruises to Norway, all year round. Authorised official local guides handle 27 different languages. LOFOTEN
The most beautiful islands in the world Voted by National Geographic as the most beautiful islands in the world, Lofoten is an Arctic island group that has been a cruise destination since 1889. There are two main ports: Leknes and Svolvær. The landscape is striking in its variety: wildly beautiful places of marsh and rock, dramatic mountains and white sand beaches by jade seas. During the winter, the Northern Lights is a familiar sight over the picturesque villages and fish-drying racks - stockfish has been the main export since the Viking Ages. The five main islands are linked by road and you can easily cross all five and return in a day. Passengers can also disembark at one port and re-join the ship at another.

ATTRACTIONS / EXCURSIONS Magic Ice in Svolvær is the world’s first ice gallery and bar. Ice sculptures representing different aspects of Arctic life are dramatically lit and sound tracked. The SKREI Experience Centre is a complete experience for the whole family, located in Storvågan, Kabelvåg. The Lofoten Aquarium presents northern Norwegian sea life, the Lofoten Museum tells the history of the Lofoten fisheries from the Middle Age up until modern times, and Gallery Espolin shows paintings with captivating scenes from Lofoten. Nyvågar Rorbuhotell serves local cuisine in their restaurant. Gallery Lofotens Hus is located in the charming fishing village of Henningsvær. As well as paintings by North Norwegian artists past and present, the gallery shows the multi-media work «Magic Island Kingdom», a loving portrait of Lofoten through the year. Full Steam is a private museum with a special collection of items connected to the long fishing traditions. It also contains a cod-liver factory that shows the historical production of the cod-liver oil.
Hov Horsefarm offers trips on Icelandic horses both summer and winter. Ride along snowy beaches and past ancient remnants from the Viking Age. Meet the Lofotr Vikings! Upon entering the Viking Chieftain´s longhouse, you embark on a time travel. The smell of tar and smoke, beautiful arts and crafts, interior decorations and architecture is part of the authentic experience. Take part in a Viking feast under the Northern Lights or enjoy the lamb stew cooked over open fire and served with the drink of the Gods, for lunch. Audio guides are available in six languages. Nusfjord is Norway’s best-preserved fishing village. The centre is the harbour, surrounded by fishermen’s cabins, some over 100 years old. As well as a variety of historic buildings, there is a café, a pub, a shop and a bird cliff. Vikten has an attractive beach with some extraordinary rocks sculpted by time and the elements. It is home to a glassblower and a ceramicist, with workshops open to the public. Flakstad Church is the second oldest church in Lofoten. This picturesque red church with its distinctive onion dome is set idyllically by the sea.

VESTERÅLEN
The world’s most beautiful island kingdom Although the sun does not appear over the horizon for nearly two months, winter in Vesterålen can be both colourful and exciting – with its blue, Arctic light above white mountains and pink ocean water. But the dark season can also be trying and harsh, when winter storms hurl fists of ice in across land and peel asphalt from the road surfaces – and daylight flickers only fleetingly before it melts back into darkness. On the other hand, it is perhaps just such an encounter with this aspect of winter that lasts longest on our mental hard discs. Many even prefer winter and its seasonal activities – outdoors in the natural surroundings as well as indoors at cultural events.

Experience the north sea, by train. Jærbanen is one of the worlds most beautiful railwaylines and takes you on a unique natural and cultural journey. It offers a stunning view of Jæren with open skies, endless ocean and wide horizon. Along the weatherbeaten coast you’ll find several lighthouses, mile upon mile of sandy beaches and dunes, only broken by boulders and salmon rivers. The whole trip takes about an hour from Stavanger to the charming, picturesque city of Egersund. Here you can visit the local chocolate factory or the famous porcelain factory, where you can do some shopping. Or just take a city stroll among the colorful houses and visit the posh Grand Hotel for a cup of coffee and a Norvegian waffle.
