Solar Thermal What is Solar Thermal? Quite simply, Solar Thermal systems use energy from the sun and convert it into heat energy, which can be used to heat your hot water. Solar Thermal systems are made up of a collector (flat-panel, or evacuated tube), a pump station, a controller, and a storage cylinder. When the collector heats up from the sun, the controller senses this and starts a pump, which circulates a heat transfer liquid around the system to the hot water cylinder where it heats up a body of water. The hot water in the cylinder is fed to your taps and showers, providing hot water for your home. Systems can be integrated into existing cylinders or new twin coil cylinders can be fitted. Solar Thermal systems provide on average half of your hot water requirements, and from March/April to September/October they can contribute to nearly all of your hot water needs. They are designed to work alongside existing heating systems for the winter months. Solar Thermal systems are one of the cheapest and most established renewable technologies.

Is My Roof Suitable? All that is required is a roof facing within 90 degrees of south. Unobstructed (unshaded) roofs, south facing roofs are ideal, but systems can be split into east/west orientations, or flat roofs, etc… typically between 2 and 4m2 is suitable though some systems may be larger depending on the hot water demand. How long does the installation take? Normally 2 days is long enough depending on the complexity of the system. Do the systems need maintaining? It is advised to carry out a few simple checks from time-to time, and a more detailed check should be undertaken between 3 and 7 years.
Why install a Solar Thermal with us?
If I go on holiday should I do anything? Generally speaking, systems can be left for up to four weeks before any intervention is required. Does it work in the winter? It may be that on the odd day in the winter months the system will raise the temperature of the water in your cylinder to some degree, and this will in turn mean your boiler having to work less to get the cylinder up to temperature.
