oh. my. god! Lee Bona’s much-used English phrase is a fitting reaction to the realization that we’ve finished yet another year with f(x)! It’s the beginning of 2014, and as we look back at 2013, what a whirlwind year that was! Happy holidays, from all of iheartf(x) and those of us at f(nation). This e-magazine has always been a gift from fans to fans, and what better way to show this then by releasing an issue in this happy season? f(nation)’s third issue marks the start of 2014 and a closing to 2013, which was undoubtedly a year of success for f(x). “Pink Tape”, indisputably f(x)’s most coherent and magnificent album to date, and certainly cemented f(x)’s quirky style while being deemed a musical success. It’s an album that can be enjoyed by everyone, and our “Pink Tape” review certainly shows that you don’t need to be an expert in music to appreciate brilliance. f(x)’s group activities were only the start because each of the members
flourished individually this year as well. Often, our best sources for member activities are their fansite administrators. Although we always love their photographs and accounts, we rarely witness the hard work they put in. In this issue we find out a bit more with the founders of Pieceof-Gold, Krystalshock, Ambossing, and LunaChina. Not to mention, we have a special, surprise Q&A with someone quite close to f(x)! Of course, we can’t neglect our own staff’s work. Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the iheartf(x) subbing process or preparing for events? This issue covers this all and more. f(nation) is our winter gift to you, and we hope each page can offer more to think about, laugh about, and love about f(x). Welcome to 2014! - f(nation) staff

The company filmed and released a refreshing documentary following f(x) around the US as they performed at SXSW in Texas, practiced sexy choreography to an electronic Britney-esque song (still unrevealed) and went behind the scenes at the Funny or Die filming. The members also had spare time to spend with their favourite people, especially Amber who took us into her home and introduced us to the Liu Family. Even reaching 28th on the Oricon Weekly charts and 21st on the US Top Heatseekers Albums.

Amber’s 1-4-3 with Henry August saw both the announcement and the release of a new updated version of a song from Henry’s solo album 1-4-3 I Love You. Dazed Digital’s Top Ten of K-Pop Coming in at a comfortable number six, “Rum Pum Pum Pum” is one of the tracks highlighted by the website of English fashion magazine, “Dazed and Confused.” Described as one of k-pop’s finest girl groups, the writer goes into detail to say that the song is intricate, morphing sinuously around its melodies to an amazing level and is so finely crafted and performed that it rises far above the rest. Continuing on to name “Pink Tape” deserving of a place in albums of the year for its perfect marriage of pop to EDM loops and breaks, the website is obviously a fan of the f(x) niche. Fuse’s 41 must-listen albums of 2013 The American media portal chose f(x) as the only Korean representative, placing them alongside popular music seniors like Justin Timberlake, John Legend and Paramore. The judges for the list were the employees and as Jeff Benjamin, Staff Writer and International Music Lover writes, “‘Pink Tape,’ girl group f(x)’s second full-length album, is steeped in quirky, boundary-pushing electronic sounds with woozy harmonies, English and Korean raps and cheerleader-esque chants. The production ranges from punchy EDM to arena-sized electronic rock and beyond.” Calling it the most experimental K-Pop album of the year, the site cites “Rum Pum Pum Pum” and “Airplane” as the tracks that best showcase f(x)’s wide range.

by dawn @ iheartfx & loverly @ iheartfx “Pink Tape”, is indisputably f(x)’s most coherent and well constructed album to date. Arguably, it was one of the best K-pop releases in 2013. “Pink Tape” was mentioned on Fuse’s top albums in December and most recently scored a nomination for the Korean Music Awards. As awards season wraps up and the last of critical acclaim for 2013 releases are published, Dawn and loverly takes us back to 29th July 2013 and re-listens to “Pink Tape.”
about pink tape Upon it’s release, “Pink Tape” claimed the top position on many music charts, including; Billboard, Gaon and Hanteo. Since it’s release, the album has received much critical praise. Often described as being “experimental,” “quirky,” and “refreshing,”

“Pink Tape” was the only K-pop album featured on Fuse TV’s “The Best 40 albums of 2013.” In terms of awards, the album has won the girls Bonsang Awards at the Golden Disk Awards. July 17, 2013 marked the first glimpse at f(x)’s comeback. The art teaser that was released contained the dreamy track, “Shadow,” that immediately caught the attention of f(x) and k-pop fans alike. There are twelve tracks in total on the album, all of which have been reviewd in this section. Besides the songs, the album packaging is something that should be noted. Based on a VHS video, “Pink Tape” comes in the format of a literal pink tape. Even the album has a recording design on it’s front. Let’s start this review off with the first song on the album -- the title song, “Rum Pum Pum Pum.”
rum pum pum pum Though it may sound funny, this is f(x) we’re talking about - their unique song titles are one of their most well-known quirks. For me, this song is also one of their best title songs since NuABO. Although I’m not a musical genius, when I hear the instrumentals of the song, I hear brilliance. The beat, the rhythm, the vocals, and the flow of the song are just perfect. I love how different they sound, yet how their voices blend together seamlessly. I love how Krystal and Luna sound enticing and sexy; I love how Sulli entering with her, “Attention, boys!” really gets your attention; I love how Victoria’s harmonization and lower tones keeps balance in the song; and I love Amber’s upbeat rap that makes me want to dance. Sometimes, f(x) singles get repetitive and at times even
boring, but “Rum Pum Pum Pum” is so incredibly addictive. Although the song may not be to everyone’s tastes, it is definitely one of my favorites. - Dawn
Shadow First introduced to fans via the “Pink Tape” art film, “Shadow” immediately entranced f(x) and k-pop fans alike. From the tinkling melodies, to the girls’ airy vocals, the song perfectly captures the fairytale-like story discussed in the lyrics. Like the name of the song suggests, the lyrics tell the story of a shadow that has fallen in love with its master. With talk of first dates and holding hands, the shadow in the song dreams about things that any listener would love to do with their ideal type. Although the song is sung in a range higher than we, as fans, are not used to hearing from the girls, they were able to rise to the
thank Amber and her awesome friend Gen Neo for creating such a beautiful piece. Though “Goodbye Summer” is a bittersweet song, one can’t help but fall in love with it. Krystal and Luna’s voices really blend well with anyone, and that’s really exceptional to me. Amber should continue making songs because this girl surely has the talent. In fact, even one of my guy friends who isn’t into K-pop fell in love with this song to the point where he was singing this song every minute - no joke! “Goodbye Summer” just has that kind of magic. - Dawn
challenge, using their vocals to match the magic and innocence of the lyrics. Kudos to SM for choosing this song as it functioned as a great introduction to the “Pink Tape”-era, while keeping in line with the image crafted for f(x). - loverly
pretty girl Pretty girl, what’s your color? For me, “Pretty Girl” is one of the best tracks in the Pink Tape album. This song is so cool and addicting and I love it because it reminds me so much of Gangsta Boy, but is so much better. “Pretty Girl” is a mix of hip hop and rock so this track is definitely new to f(x) listeners. Who would’ve thought they could pull off this kind of genre, right? f(x) is really full of surprises and this song is definitely impressive and head-banging worthy. - Dawn
kick Leave it to f(x) to make a song about skatebording sound like a totally normal subject to sing about. It definitely helps that the backing track is fun, upbeat, and exciting to listen to. Furthering the cool, hip vibe that f(x) has become known for, the lyrics depict a kind of girl that loves to wear her red lipstick, but can relax and have fun by throwing all of her cares away skateboarding. It’s a great song with a sound that is familiar to f(x) fans, using the electronic sound that the girls
are known for and pairing it with the chants and claps heard throughout this album. Encouraging fans at the beginning and ending of the song to get up and clap with them, it’d be no surprise if you found yourself bopping along in your car or on a subway. - loverly
step Keeping in line with the theme of a strong, chic woman, “Step” is a fantastic song to follow “Kick.” Recalling back to the working women that used to bring a pair of sneakers to change into before and after work (how’s that for a throwback?!), “Step” is about a woman that is not afraid to let everyone know how determined she is to be successful. The repetition of the line, “You watch my step,” seems to further instill the notion of this kind of woman, which seems to be theme present throughout much of this album. Whereas the first few songs seem to lyrically play to the youth of some of the girls, the rest of the album helps to present them as chic and fun-loving women. It’s, honestly, the most “mature” theme f(x) has had to date. - loverly
goodbye summer Now if you’re a sucker for ballads like me, I’m pretty sure you love “Goodbye Summer”. This song has got to be one of my most played songs along with “Airplane”, and I definitely
airplane “Airplane” has got to be one of my all-time favorite f(x) songs. This song is just straight up awesome and futuristic that it actually gives me so much energy. I love how the beat starts out slow then speeds up, taking the song from a mellow to upbeat mood that perfectly fits the message that compares falling in love to an airplane and a thrilling journey. I love how they combine the Nintendo-like beat and the different “Come with me. Airplane. Love.” chant in the chorus because it is just perfection. I personally think Sulli’s voice shines the most in this song, especially during the bridge part; her voice just makes my heart flutter every time. There’s something so magical about this song that lets it give off such a positive vibe that it keeps you listening all day. - Dawn
toy “Toy” for some odd reason reminds me so much of the Walt Disney Film “Tarzan” and “The Lion King”. The first time I heard this song, it’s like I went back to being a kid. I just felt this pure nostalgia, and I didn’t even realize it had put a smile on my face immediately. I like how they sound so playful, and the whole song is just so fun and colorful throughout.

Thanks to CSJH’s Dana, fans were given what is probably f(x)’s sassiest song to date. Using a backing track that is very reminiscient of the Motown girl groups of the 50s and 60s, the funny lyrics talk about that one friend that so many people seem to have -- that guy (or, in this case, girl) that seems to always change who they are whenever they’re in love. In the song, the “friend” is described as an atheist at first who has suddenly become a devout worshipper thanks to her new boyfriend. She’s the kind of person that never stays her true self when in a relationship and it’s something that many fans may have seen within their own group of friends. The lyrics are teasing in a way that only friends can get away with, reminding the friend in the song that even though they do this, they still love them and cherish the relationship they have with them. It’s also incredibly refreshing to hear f(x) take on such a genre, with “No More” probably being the biggest shift in musical styles from the electronic pop that people know them for. Luna’s voice, in particular, is put to excellent use here, with her high notes near the end of the song, soaring to great heights. Victoria sounds the best she has ever sounded on an f(x) track, while Sulli’s spoken ad libs throughout “No More” help to maintain the song’s playfulness. It’s a shame that the song hasn’t been performed often because it shows a wonderful new side to f(x).

signal
want to write for us?
Add a polka dot dress, colorful leggings and headbands, disco ball light, and I’m read to dance to “No More” and “Signal”. These two retro tracks made me wish I was born during the 80s, where I could dance and dress to my retro’s heart content! I love how sweet they sound in “No More”, and in particular Victoria’s voice stood out in the song because you can tell how much her voice has really improved. And don’t forget the witty lyrics and funny adlibs! Aigoo, I really cannot help but laugh whenever I listen to this song. - Dawn
snapshot “Snapshot” is a fun, jazzy song with a chorus somehow similar to “My Style”. I really love it when the other girls rap aside from Amber because it just sounds so amusing. Listening to “Snapshot” is like watching an interesting drama because the song just gives off a very theatrical vibe. The sound of people clapping before the song starts, not to mention Amber’s sexy intro of the lovely f(x) ladies, makes this song pretty unique and entertaining. - Dawn

ending page “Ending Page” makes this album even more flawless, if that was possible, because wow! What a way to end an awesome tracklist. With all the excitement, fun, rainbows and butterflies the “Pink Tape” album has made us feel, “Ending Page” is like a splash of cold water - refreshing, but sharp that tells us, “Hey, everything before was a dream, but now we’re back to reality.” Out of all the songs in the Pink Tape, this pop rock ballad has the deepest and most expressive meaning, and it fits perfectly as the ending song of the album. - Dawn
All in all, the whole album is impressive, quirky, fun and refreshing. “Pink Tape” is full of surprises that you’ll have missed out on if you haven’t listened to the album in full yet. If I had to talk about the lyrics of the song, I might as well write a novel, so I’ll leave those a mystery for you to discover! If you loved the album, you will surely love it more once you find the lyrics behind every song in the album. I can tell you, I fell hard and until now I still feel like I’m on Cloud Nine whenever I listen to “Pink Tape.” This album has got to be one of the best K-pop albums that SM has ever released this year. Scratch that, Pink Tape is definitely a must-listen to album of 2013, and f(x) and the people behind this album definitely deserve awards and recognition for what was truly a job well done. - Dawn

And though it’s unlike how she looks, I love how she’s playful and delicate too!
f(nation): When did you become a fan of Amber? AB: When La Cha Ta’s teaser first came out! I’ve been paying close attention to her since then! The day I absolutely fell in love with her was September 27, 2009 during her performance on “Inkigayo.” Throwing her Newera while rapping was insane.
f(nation): What is your favorite promotion era? AB: La Cha Ta and Hot Summer! I really like Rum Pum Pum Pum era too, with all the uniforms and everything. But I love Hot Summer era the most.
f(nation): What is it about Amber that made you a fan? AB: Her androgyny? Everyone said she looked like a boy but she looked like a total girl to me.
f(nation): How difficult is it to keep up-to-date with her activities? AB: It’s not very hard but some days when she has, like, three to four schedules a day, it makes me [lose] my mind. Checking/keeping up isn’t that hard. Informing other fans about it is the hard part. f(nation): How do you ensure that all your releases are so HQ? AB: Umm.. usually I’m recording a fancam, and the other is taken by a friend. My friends always help me if they have the time. f(nation): What support projects have you done? AB: f(x)’s 2nd anniversary union support (my site’s name was AmberTV back then), 2011 Amber’s birthday support, IY2 Amber’s last day support, 2012 Amber’s birthday support and “Show

Champion” support this April. Need more Amber in your life? You can follow our friends at Ambossing here: Site: http://www.ambossing.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/Ambossing_
piece of gold f(nation): When did you become a fan of Victoria? POG: The moment I became a fan is probably at the end of “Electric Shock” promotions. I had to rest because of various friends. Following a friend, I took a photo of Krystal but also Victoria. And I became a fan of Victoria due to that friend! Still, I’m sad that Victoria’s blonde hair did not last long enough! f(nation): What is it about Victoria that made you a fan? POG: I focus on humor first of all. Even though I did not know her will, Victoria was very kind so I liked her more and more after I knew her, from what she said on broadcast TV and the radio. She is very nice on stage. Kind, faithful, modest. She does her best for every stage and she smiles for fans even when she is very tired. So, I loved Victoria more and more. Some days, the friend [who introduced me to f(x)] tells me it is very good I became a fan of Victoria and I think so, too. Thank you, Victoria! f(nation): What is your favorite promotion era? POG: I like “Electric Shock” best. All f(x) songs are good, but that suited my tastes. I especially felt attached to the “Jet” stage because it seemed all five members enjoyed it. I felt excited when I heard the
introduction of “Electric Shock” and “Jet”! How amazing! f(nation): How difficult is it to keep up-to-date with her activities? POG: SM always makes a tight schedule. It’s like the calm before a storm, the week of an empty schedule. Sometimes I would be free, but then there were two to three schedules a day and even four or more a day. For example, in March, she had five schedules in two days. OMG! I thought it was impossible at the time, but I was satisfied the photos I shot were good the night after that day.
It’s always like this. Although it may be forgivable [if the photos are not good], it is not easy for me to forgive myself if it is like that. And I think it means Victoria is popular. But actually, I couldn’t deal with it well because I was busy. I may become lazy. But I will follow her even more! I love her so much forever! f(nation): How do you ensure that all your releases are so HQ? POG: Same as others. I use the popular models for cameras and lenses. I don’t know much about editing the photos. I just think Victoria’s pictures are so beautiful.
And bigger is better than small pictures! That’s all! f(nation): What support projects have you done? POG: Things that are not that difficult. For example, we advertised for f(x) and sent flowers to the production presentation for “Glitter”. But Victoria always uploads the pictures on Weibo and Me2Day. Moreover, she says thanks to us on those. Even though we don’t expect to see the gifts on the screen when she is in the picture, we always get the strength from her. And I think, “Victoria seems to like that support from us.” Need more Victoria in your life? special report
iheartfx at kcon: a recap
the top of their heads for another 15 minutes, as you’ll read below), I had more than a few entertaining experiences during the two days of KCON.
by sparklypoga @ iheartfx 2013 was certainly a year f(x) swept through the U.S. west coast -- from SXSW to “Funny or Die” to the much-anticipated second year of KCON. Just like f(x), this was iheartf(x)’s (and mine!) first time at this fan-crazy convention and it was definitely an experience to remember. iheartf(x) was actually invited to a speaker panel at KCON ‘13 before news that f(x) would be performing was released, so you can imagine the excitement when the news first came out! Although I only managed to see f(x) during their concert performance (I did get to see

Even though my panel was on Sunday, I headed in a day early to check out Dramabeans (Girlfriday and Javabeans were special guests!) on their panel as a long-time fan. It was definitely worth it, because they’re just as witty and funny in person as they are on their blog. Not to mention, Sean Richard was easy on the eyes and ears. For the rest of the morning, I avoided the heat by hanging out with a friend at the DBSKnights/ FY!Tohoshinki booth and meeting those who ran the Soshified booth (who allowed us to commandeer half their booth upon f(x)’s last minute concert announcement!)
- all of them are totally awesome people - before calling it quits with the heat and heading back home to finish putting together the last of iheartf(x)’s giveaway items for the next day. The fact that KCON was held in the end of August meant that it was sweltering. I definitely had to admire all the fans standing in line just to get into the convention grounds, because I spend most of my weekend there ducking into shady tents and just camping out in front of a fan.
entertaining in itself - though perhaps not in ways you’d expect (FYI, all the idol and other bigname guests probably had their own rooms within the concert venue itself, since I never caught sight of them). Time passed quickly as I chatted with admins of other fansites, but the highlights had to be seeing Chad Future pass by with his very own entourage I might have giggled a bit more than necessary - and free water and chips.
When I got in early Sunday, the lines were already stretched through the entire parking lot despite it being almost an hour before KCON opened for the day. Set-up was quick with our mini-iheartf(x) booth, and I split my day between there and the shady speaker’s tent (which had it’s very own fan! Pun totally not intended). The speaker’s tent was
Food pleases me easily, which means it’s no surprise that food was probably one of my favorite parts of KCON. There was free ramyun. Free Shin 辛 Ramyun (Black). I kid you not. Well, it was free sample cups and a free pack or two but as this stuff is my savior in college, I’ll admit was just a bit more excited to get this than I was to see f(x)’s heads.
There was actually oodles and oodles of Korean food throughout the convention grounds, from PSY-sponsored bibimbap (Bibigo) to the ubiquitous BCD tofu to the famous LA fusion trucks, which satisfied many a KCON-goers. I scored a meal ticket and went for a trusted oldie but goodie in the BCD stand for a pretty satisfying meal. I also managed to score a ticket to f(x)’s fansigning session last-minute. It being a lastminute gift by someone, I was one of the last in line, which brings me to my aforementioned twenty or so minutes of seeing the top of f(x)’s heads. It’s the closest I’ve ever been to them, and I got to see them in person, an experience made all the more fun with the screaming fan reactions around me. As it was an anecdote that probably got me the most laughs at my panel, I don’t think I lost out at all.
It was a rushed affair - f(x) entered late and left early between KCON decisions and an overload of fans - but the girls were as cheery as ever and greeted fans happily. A few jokes later by the always charismatic Amber and everyone - from those at the front to those at the back - was smiling and cheering all five girls on. The lines in general to all the fansigns and fanmeets were intense (I can still hear the screams
even now…) but the limited tickets meant limited crowds. Unsurprisingly, Henry’s open, unlimited speaker panel was so crowded that there was no room for it! I passed by the tent an hour before it started and heard that there were already over 300 fans lined up - not a surprise, perhaps, but considering the heat it was definitely a testament to Henry’s popularity. They ended up moving the panel to a center area and the screams could be heard all over. If I had to pick some keywords for KCON, “screaming” would definitely be one of them. Henry speaks one word? SCREAM. EXO song starts playing? SCREAM. G-Dragon’s name mentioned? SCREAM. (EXO performs? SCREAMMMMMMMMMMMMMM).
SparklyPoga was able to bring support items to our mini-iheartfx booth, including 2 printed copies of f(nation), balloons, and prizes for fans.
All in all, KCON 2013 was definitely an eye-opening event in many ways. The fans I saw were from a multitude of different ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds but all of them bonded over K-pop and K-entertainment. In fact, the sheer amount of fans and the scale of the event shocked me at first. Although the prices were steep and there were a few shaky bumps, KCON made leaps and bounds between 2012 and 2013, and was definitely an event to remember for the fans that attended. It was a fun opportunity, and as part of iheartf(x), I want to thank MNet for inviting us. I hope KCON only gets better in the future and 2014!

f(nation) q&a had for her, I was just as eager to learn more about Jackie and only a few days later (plenty of time for post-KCON recovery), I caught up with her for a quick interview. Check it out below!
f(nation): You have quite a few followers on both Tumblr and Twitter, and I think anyone who checks either will notice how much you love traveling. What’s your fondest memory of traveling? Jackie Liu: I do love traveling! I went on a huge adventure to Nicaragua and El Salvador last summer. Surfing huge waves and being somewhere completely new to me was probably the most memorable part of my travels. Yeah, backpacking around with my huge surfboards was really tedious and learning Spanish was really hard, but [it was] so rewarding in retrospect.
q&a with jackie liu by sparklypoga @ iheartfx KCON 2013 was a crazy weekend full of fans, K-pop, yummy food, free goods, crazy fans, amazing booths, K-pop, and - did I mention? - fans. It is no exaggeration to say that the sheer amount of fangirls and fanboys, of every age and background, was staggering. Drawn by not only the artists performing, but also panelists and the overarching theme of “K-Pop,” these fans did not disappoint with their cheers for anyone. One person who definitely did not lack in love was Jackie Liu, a special guest at the “K-Pop Siblings” panel (which, ironically, was the same time of f(x)’s own fanmeet - at which Amber jokingly said, “Why are you here?! Go listen to my sister!”). Her panel the Sunday of KCON was crowded with eager listeners and many even braved the sun and heat to gather at the tent’s outskirts and listen. Although K-pop fans may have been introduced to her through Amber, the ever-friendly Jackie has gained a following of her own

through her fun tweets, thoughtful blog posts, and general coolness.
I caught Jackie in the panelist tent the afternoon just before the concert. After I mentioned the mini support booth iheartfx had for f(x), we headed towards it - but the trip became quite a long one because less than ten steps out the tent we had fans rush up for pictures and hugs. It was a nonstop stream and Jackie refused none of the enthusiastic requests. Handed camera phone after camera phone for a photo request, I giggled as I heard shouts of “We love you, Jackie!”, squeals of “OMG IT’S JACKIE!!”, and furtive whispers of “Is that really her?” from those on the convention grounds. If you follow our Twitter, you no doubt know that we did eventually make it to the booth and, after another round of excited fans, managed to return safely to the tent. Seeing all the love that people
f(nation): Speaking of traveling, you’ve been to Korea a few times as well. What are the places you enjoy most there? JL: I’d say wandering around Hongdae is probably the most fun. Lots of foreigners and students to talk to. Also, all the alleyways have really good food! There was this one jjimdak place that was AMAZING and spicy. f(nation): I’m pretty sure food honestly has to be one of the best parts of traveling! We all know you like a good noodle dish, but what else? JL: Food! I LOVE Korean food. Dak galbi is one of my favorites and I always make Amber order bossam for me. I live for the ssamjang [and] raw garlic duo. I probably smell so
bad after. [Laughs] I love noodles, but I think I am a little noodled out for now. I had a blog about my spazzing noodle phase, [but] then I got so sick of it and stopped posting. I’m still obsessed with top ramen though, with a poached egg! Also pho. I can eat a bowl of pho any day. I eat it with extra limes, onions, and chili oil flakes! SO GOOD. Okay, so I still love noodles...Dang it, you got me. f(nation): Okay, so with all your travels, do you have a favorite place? JL: My favorite place in the world is probably Santa Cruz where I went to university. The mountains, ocean, and small town feel is incomparable to anywhere else I’ve ever been to. The restaurant food is mediocre, but the farm fresh food at the market is where it’s at! f(nation): Besides the food and sites, you’ve also traveled for music, including festivals like SXSW and Coachella. What kinds of music do you like most? JL: I am the biggest music fan ever! I love all genres of music including some metal, punk, indie pop/rock, top 40, K-pop, classic rock, afro funk...I can be here all day. Recently, I’ve been listening to the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s new album, alt J, Empire of the Sun, the Evens, MNDR, and the Breeders. I like a lot of underground music, like bands that have one epic single and disappear forever. I go through phases of new music exploration and then, nostalgia for the stuff I listened to as a kid. f(nation): In terms of music, you’ve no doubt also been exposed to a lot of K-pop. Do you

K-pop isn’t Psy is one shared by many, too. Would you like to see more aspects of K-pop - the actual made-to-release-in-Korea music, versus English debuts - in the U.S? JL: I think Korean artists should stop trying to “crossover” and sing in English. The appeal of K-pop that it is
f(nation): Speaking of K-pop, KCON just happened and as I mentioned earlier, you had quite a following there! Your panel was full to the brim, and you got lots of attention. How was it compared to last year’s? JL: KCON was definitely a crazy experience for me this year. I wasn’t expecting the attention I received because last year, I didn’t know anyone. But over the year, I’ve developed close friendships with people I met at last KCON including Soy from Soshified and songwriter Sean Alexander. I have also developed my social media outlets like my Tumblr and Instagram with my travels [and more]. You’ve witnessed your sister go through the craziness of K-pop for years now - have you ever thought of stepping into it yourself? JL: I’ve never thought about joining it. I used to dance ballet for most of my childhood...I can’t dance anything else really. [Laughs] I’m stiff. And I CANNOT sing nor rap to save my life. I do play the piano, though! f(nation): Hey, I play the piano too - it’s a worthy accomplishment! Anyways, to wrap it all up, we’ll begin as we started I think, and go back to learning a bit more about what you like and tying it to the ever-present focus of our magazine - f(x). A question I think many a f(x) and Jackie Liu fan would like answered - do you have a favorite f(x) song? JL: I listen to K-pop for the music. f(x)’s Pink Tape is an amazing and cohesive bundle of music that I believe SM A&R did a fantastic job putting together. It is a visual and audible piece of art in one package. I say this not to bias f(x), but to view it critically because, [like] my sister, I expect the best and highest quality. [Comparatively] I, thought the first album was a little all over the place conceptually. My favorite songs are probably “Chocolate Love” and “Mr. Boogie”. I also loved “NuABO”.
f(nation) would like to thank Jackie Liu for not only agreeing to be interviewed by us, but also taking the time to answer our questions. It was a pleasure speaking with you, Jackie! Oppan Gangnam Style: Can Psy’s success pave the way for other k-pop acts trying to break into the U.S. market?

f(nation) spotlight
Something is always brewing inside the Heartf(x)Subs lab. Whether it’s preparing the latest “Amazing f(x)” episode or whipping out their latest interview, your hardworking subbers do their best to produce everything about f(x). How do things really work behind the scenes of a completed video, though? Is being a subber all fun and games, or is it a bit more than that? Well, it is a long and elaborate process to produce just one video, and there’s much more going on than many are aware of. We thought we’d take this time to show you the main steps of our subbers’ Heartf(x)Subs lives.
finding the raw The blue usernames you see on the forum are the ones who help out here. Our uploaders are in charge of finding the highest quality of the original video they can get their hands on. If the video isn’t cut at all, they will spend extra time cutting each of f(x)’s appearances within the show - no matter how minute - and join them together to create one final piece. It’s no easy work, especially when the show likes jumping around!
22
A specific format (typically .avi) is usually required to allow for the next steps of sub, so often uplaoders need to spend time converting the video as well.
translating Translating might seem to be an easy step - if you’re fluent in the language, you watch it, get everything done, and that’s it, right? However, it’s far from easy. Our team mainly translates from two languages - Korean and Chinese - to English. Translators are responsible for translating everything f(x) says in a video, which is pretty difficult as English is quite different from Korean and Chinese language-wise! At iheartfx, we work to give you the most accurate translations possible; so, rather than directly translate, we try to convey the entire meaning behind f(x)’s words. However, it takes much more than one go-through. A translator watches the scene once to get the meaning, and then re-watches up to five more times to accurately capture all the dialogue and screentext. It takes much longer than the duration of a video to translate - a simple 10-minute video can take well over 20, even 30 or more, minutes to translate! Also, to aid subbers in the

@
the subbing process next step, translators provide visual/timing references to ensure minimal mistakes. When using Chinese translations for our initial translations, we also have a Korean translator recheck the final version to ensure complete accuracy. We want fans to be able to have the best and most true understanding of our girls. “Even though it’s a lot of work and a tough job, I have fun subbing as I watch the source (show) as well!’ Subbing for f(x) is really a joy to me despite I already having work to do off my “internet life”. The least I can do for f(x) is subbing or translating anything that would be able to help the fandom,” says deluxius, a Heartf(x)Subs subber.
timing
This might seem the simplest task, but it really isn’t. If you’re curious, feel free to download a subbing program (we use Aegisubs) and give it a go. Timers have to make sure that all the dialogue (especially overlapping ones) are placed correctly, the screentext pops up at the right time, and everything matches up with the audio. Just as with subbing, a 10minute video can take much, much longer to time. When there is a lot of dialogue, it might take twice or even triple the length of the video to finish timing. Experienced timers eventually learn how to do this quickly, but it still is a long and time-consuming process. This is what our subber jonggism shared about her experience in timing: “Timing is definitely hard. Well anything can be considered difficult,
Subbers type out all of the times for both dialogue and on-screen text.
After figuring out all of the subs, timers make sure the correct text is popping up at the right time.
but having to pause every now and then to get a specific time of when a person stops speaking and to get the exact time that person opens his/her mouth to speak again, is pretty hard.”
uploading videos to sharing sites and YouTube isn’t that simple, either. On YouTube, we have a limit of 15 minutes per video so the encoders have to provide a split version to upload in addition to the completed version they create for forum downloading. Uploading onto YouTube can take - depending on the Internet speed and various other issues hours and hours. We’ve definitely seen longer videos take half a day, sometimes!
typesetting Matching the subtitles to the screentext (or on-screen text) is yet another part of the subbing process. We always try to match our subtitles exactly to the original. That includes making sure no faces or important images are blocked, adjusting the color, tweaking positions, applying the outline effects, timing perfectly...It’s far from easy. We value the aesthetics aspect in typesetting our videos! One of our subbers, laff, shared that around five to six days are needed for one episode of “Amazing f(x).” When factoring in a subber’s “real life” this means that well over a week might be needed for long projects like “Amazing f(x),” though time is shortened when there are more people working at it (which is all the more reason to join our subbing group!)
spottranslating After going through a couple of processes, we usually realize that we’re missing a line or two. These lines then get passed back to the translators for them t o fill. To do this, someone needs to watch the whole thing carefully and point these out, which adds more time to the project.
quality checking Editors or quality checkers spend a lot of time here as well. Here, we make sure that everything is picture perfect! No words misspelled, no line overlooked, no screentext overlapping with the dialogue. QCers go line by line, checking every single screen text and translation, to make sure it’s all perfect.
Subbers type out all of the times for both dialogue and on-screen text.
encoding and uploading Encoding requires some analytical skills in order to compress the video file to the smallest size possible while still maintaining the quality of the video. The higher the quality and the longer the video, the longer it can take. “Amazing f(x),” for instance, can take well over 5 hours to encode and split. We need to split it because
Our earnest encoders and uploaders have a great deal of patience in order to wait for the files to finish uploading. And of course, they have to get around the copyright notices - the reason we can’t upload videos over 15 minutes is because striked accounts on YouTube do not enable uploading longduration videos.
so... is subbing fun?
Don’t let this guide scare you it definitely is! The girls are entertaining, so it’s really fun to sub their fun videos, and we become even more attached to them through this. More importantly, instead of just subbing for ourselves, we get a chance to let more fans know about the people we love. Isn’t that great? That said, it is definitely an arduous process. We understand that people are eager for subs, but when we aren’t releasing things it isn’t because we’re lazy or withholding anything. Our subbers are often students or working, and extremely busy in their “real life” - to juggle this all and have a social life and be a part of Heartf(x)Subs is no easy task. When the school year starts, you’ll notice our productions slow down quite a bit. It’s another reason we give credits and have a logo subbers go through a lot of hard work and sacrifice to put out each project, so it’s only right to give them the respect they deserve. How do you thank subbers? It’s pretty simple. A small “thank you” can light up our days, because we really do invest a lot of time and energy for these videos. Whether on the forum or on YouTube, whenever we see happy comments, the hard work doesn’t seem so bad. Are you interested in joining? If you want faster subs, the only way to do so is really to help us out! We are always welcoming people with open arms! Head over to http://www.iheartfx.com or contact us to join our ah-mazing team. We’ll see you soon!
From L to R: After getting the subs onto the video, the subbers then go back to check for any incorrect trnaslations or other errors before uploading the final product to YouTube and the iheartfx forum.

If you’re a fan of f(x), there’s a good chance that you’re also a fan of SMTOWN - the family of idols and entertainers managed by SM Entertainment. I probably don’t have to tell you that SM Entertainment is home to some of the biggest names in K-pop, including TVXQ!, Super Junior, and Girls’ Generation, just to name a few. And of course, there is our maknae girl group - the five, always lovely ladies of f(x). Seeing as they all come from the same management company, SM groups tend to spend a lot of time together.

The same artists appear on TV shows and at concerts with each other. In fact, even before they debuted as idols, they spent years training and living together. As fans, we cherish the stories from an artist’s pre-debut time because learning about the struggles that idols went through to achieve their success humanizes them to us fans. For SM artists, the site where many of those early struggles took place is inside the practice rooms at SM Entertainment. Last year, the film “I AM.” gave us a glimpse at the intense vocal and dance training that goes on in those famous sky-patterned rooms. The sweat and tears we saw in that film are evidence of the passion and determination it took for our idols to fulfill their dreams. Knowing the origins of SM artists, it is not surprising that
the SM building has become a K-pop tourist destination. Although fans usually aren’t allowed to enter the building, tourists are eager to visit the spot where so many K-pop stars have their roots. For a long time, the SM building on Apgujeong-ro was the primary location for SM artist training and business. These days, however, there is a second SM building for artists, closer to the Han River. To get to the SM building on Apgujeong-ro, take the Bundang subway line to Apgujeong Rodeo Station; then, go out Exit 2 and walk straight for one block. The building will be on your left. If f(x) happens to be promoting during your visit, you might get to see their faces decorating the exterior. The second SM building is only about a five minute walk from the first.

the generosity of fandom by sparklypoga @ iheartfx Being part of a K-pop fandom is amazing in so many different ways. As a fan, we come to love a group that makes us smile to see them, cry when they cry, and laugh at their silliest moments. As a fandom, we get to do all this and more as a group, bonding over our shared enjoyment. As a worldwide fandom, we are able to spread such love despite languages we, ourselves, might not know, with people from countries we once thought little about, and across time zones like sleep never matters. That such fandoms have hundreds of thousands, even millions, of fans exist is an amazing fact in itself. What such fandoms have done because of their numbers and

strength, however, is what creates the best stories.
As I write this, 2013 is near its end. When you read this, a new year in 2014 will have begun. While thinking of what to discuss in this issue, my thoughts turned to one of the most popular actions of this season: giving. This time of year, many choose to buy gifts for the family and friends they love, give to those who are perhaps unable to do the same, and grant wishes that makes the winter magical. Although the immediate idea of giving may fade as we move further from this time, it is an action that is still ubiquitous each and every
day. Just as common in K-pop, such an idea has resulted in often incredible, sometimes unbelievable, gifts. When I first got into K-pop, I was completely shocked by the sheer quanity of fan gifts and the amount of money that went into acquiring them. The most fashionable luxury goods, the latest technology, and the most delicious food seemed
to be a necessity. Over the years, such fan gifts have surprised me less - though the odd six MacBooks might give me a shock - and I’ve seen the pride and happiness fans gain to be able to gift their groups. Such gifts have amazed me with their sheer extravagance, but it is others that impress me more.
For f(x)’s fourth anniversary, iheartfx, fx2you.net, DC f(x) Gallery, Baidu fxgroupbar and f(x) Taiwan joined together to donate to the Korea Childhood Leukemia Foundation.
Sometimes I see articles about fans buying bus ads or ad spaces throughout the city to promote their idols’ works. Often, I read and see pictures about food gifts given to an entire filming cast and crew from a devoted group of fans in appreciation of not only the stars they support but the staff that work hard with them as well. At other times, the gifts are instead gifts of warm jackets or small snacks or drinks. These gifts are those I enjoy participating in -- ones that show support for the artist in ways that can be felt past the individual. To be able to help promote an artist I like and support them in their work often seems to me a wonderful way to help their career, further than active support of their works. Yet, although I love such ways to support artists there is one other type of giving that impresses me the most. The donation of thousands of kilograms of rice, the magical ability to “Make-a-Wish” come true, the creations of schools and forests and wells, and the immediate support for heartbreaking disasters are all gifts I have seen fandoms give.
For me, the way that idols inspire their fans enough to give to others that they may not have thought of before, or in a massive way only possible with a group thousands strong, is one of the most wonderful parts of being in a fandom. At iheartf(x), our charity projects are often inspired by what f(x) has shown us, in hopes of spreading it further. Be it ten dollars or one thousand dollars, being able to
give to something even bigger than us as a fandom brings to us so much more meaning to the support we offer to f(x).
iheartfx worked together with several Korean fansites (fx2you.net, DC f(x) Gallery, PTT f(x) and Kiss Soo) to donate food in support of Krystal’s birthday and her role as Lee Bona in “The Heirs.”
The greatest compliment we give our idols is when we admire them so much we are pushed to

do something incredible ourselves. Giving awesome gifts to idols is one such way. Creating support projects for idols is another such way. Charity projects are yet another way. There are even more ways, however, that may not seem so obvious: subbing groups that release projects giving enjoyment to people from all over the world, forums and fansites that uploads photos and news and updates immediately for fans, and even individual Tumblrs and Twitters that show the love a fan holds each and every day. Combined, they become are signs of love, appreciation, and respect each fandom holds for their most favorite star. When we do such projects, we are inspired by our idols, yes. But we are also inspired by other fans who work so hard, by fans who thank us for our work, and by fans who constantly spread their love. Because of this, I want to end this year’s last editorial with a thank you. Thank you to the f(nation) staff for working incredibly hard each issue on the design, content, and creation of the magazine. Thank you to the iheartf(x) staff that works hard each day to keep all fans updated on f(x) news, that creates fan projects that give f(x) lights of support, that releases subs giving fans so much joy. And of course, thank you to all the fans, whose donation, support, and thanks always makes such giving possible. To idols, fans can sometimes be the most wonderful gift.

by taekaway @ iheartfx The members of f(x) are known for their quirky, eccentric, and often puzzling onstage outfits. However, it’s a completely different story once they are off duty. Each girl has developed their own preferences and signature flairs that personalize their outfits. Airport candids are great for spotting their preferred styles. Here’s a breakdown of f(x)’s most recent airport visits.
victoria Recently, Victoria’s style has been very chic. Utilizing shades of black, white, navy and muted colours, she sticks to basic staples and classic silhouettes. To avoid how frequent use of dark colours can easily get stale, Victoria makes sure to add a measured dash of color every once in a while. On stage, you’re likely to spot Victoria in bold patterns. However, don’t expect this once she is off

stage! For day to day attire, Victoria and prints only extend to the classics: nautical stripes, stars, the occasional polka dot and the rare, simple floral print. Subtle prints seem to attract Victoria and she makes a conscious effort to balance them out with a simple color scheme throughout the remainder of her outfit. If you fancy channelling Victoria for a day, remember the following: Stick to simple pieces and layer. Mixing and matching is the key to success, but a pop of color can’t hurt. Don’t be afraid to mix designer and non-designer or classics with the latest trend. Also, it doesn’t hurt if your airport smile is one that seems effortlessly sweet and gentle.
luna Luna dresses to match her mood. If Victoria’s keyword is chic, then Luna’s can only be comfort.

Not to say that comfort can’t be stylish - Luna takes casual pieces and pairs them with structured ones to achieve a trendy feel. She rocks toned skinny jeans like no one else. A great trick of Luna’s to note: matching the shade of your shoes to your pants can create an uninterrupted line of vision and make your legs look longer. Besides having mastered the magic of leg lengthening, Luna has perfected the art of the jean fit. Not too tight, not too loose and

sculpted to fit her body perfectly. Often, Luna wears different shades of one colour. She loves for her pieces to compliment each other in some way, which is why you’ll often see Luna in similar shades of blue or with multiple shades of white in one outfit. Of course, she has a rather practical approach to fashion. If it’s cold outside, be assured that she’ll have a thick and super warm coat at hand. Take it from Luna and practice

works magic. If you aspire to reflect Sulli’s stylish fashion, try purchasing a large tote or handbag in a navy or burgundy – they’re Sulli’s favorites! Check out some sweaters and collared shirts as well, and make sure to look into what works with your skin tone and what doesn’t. Soon you’ll be exuding that Sulli-level cuteness!
amber Amber’s style is a laid-back fusion of sports-luxe and hip-hop. An avid fan of baseball caps and snapbacks, Amber’s style is casual, yet classic. She’ll wear baggy jeans with leather to make a statement, or a backpack with a denim shirt for a new look. Although Amber wears a collection of striking hues while working as f(x)’s Amber, as Amber Liu she likes a collection of dark colors that include black, blues and greys. She’ll rock a graphic t-shirt just as coolly as she’ll rock her signature black hoodie. Although a number one fan the loose and slouchy, Amber knows how to dabble in more structured and business-sleek looks without sacrificing her own style. By upgrading from jeans to khakis, from a hoodie to fitted camo or leather, Amber can move into fancier territory without veering too far away from the casual, almost hip-hop style she has developed. Amber’s closet of separates is extremely multi-functional. She is able to re-invent and re-use her clothes in a variety of new outfits because she purchases classic pieces so that the impact lies in their clean, eternally fashionable lines rather than a loud but fast-ending fad. Amber likes a modest style that can be called “understated chic”. Take a cue from Amber and invest in some items that you’ll be able to wear with any pieces, despite the multitudes of trends that you see.

Usually keeping it safe, her go-to are sleek designs and playful textures. Sulli has an eye for one-of-akind pieces, wearing unassuming items that have a surprise detail you wouldn’t expect. Now officially an adult, her style alternates slightly between lady-like elegance and rebellious schoolgirl. Sulli usually likes to mix both light and dark in one outfit, sometimes even throwing in a jewel-coloured handbag. Combined with her tousled hair, you get a standard Sulli formula that
A constant go-to girl for fashion magazines, Krystal’s clothing style is subtly sexy and cosmopolitan, a smart-casual look fitting for any occasion. A fan of classics like the blazer, skinny jean and basic tee, Krystal brings her own twists to her outfits. She mixes prints, metallics, or denims with vintage silhouettes and cuts; staple pieces with luxe statements; and a simple piece with a strong leather. However, Krystal uses the bolder prints sparingly, so don’t expect to see her dress herself with an inyour-face pattern. She’s left her NuABO style in favour of a more grown-up look. Any patterns or prints you have are timeless classics - stripes or checkered prints - and even then you often catch only a peek of them. She has the essence of a high-class beauty and often dresses more like a model than an idol, so it shouldn’t surprise you that Krystal makes her rounds on quite a few Pinterest boards, too! If you’re looking for that cooly stylish look Krystal carries, mix distinctly separate fashions together to create a new style that is uniquely you. Make sure your biggest effect comes from quality pieces, and add a statement piece or pop of color to stand out. Keep your main colors simple, though, because Krystal always
