Foote’s salary below Harrison’s New CEO to be paid $1.2M base with the opportunity for a $1.5M incentive bonus. Obviously, CSX Corp. isn’t paying new CEO James Foote an $84 million bonus for joining the company, as it did for his predecessor. But beyond that special payment Hunt-
er Harrison received as he became chief executive last year, Harrison’s contract also paid a higher salary than Foote is getting. According to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing by Jacksonville-based CSX after it named Foote the permanent CEO last month, Foote will receive an annual base salary of $1.2 million. He also can earn an incentive bonus equal to 125 percent of his base salary, or $1.5 million. That’s a bump up from the $750,000 base salary he was scheduled to earn when he became chief operating officer, but still below Harrison’s contract. Harrison’s annual salary was $2.2 million plus a target bonus opportunity of $2.8 million.
The $84 million was not part of Harrison’s four-year employment contract but was paid to compensate him for money forfeited when he left his previous position as CEO of Canadian Foote Pacific Railway Ltd. Foote joined CSX in late October and was named CEO on Dec. 22, after Harrison’s death the previous week. CSX’s latest filing does not say how long Foote’s CEO agreement will be in effect, but his October employment agreement was for four years.
ADT going public again ADT Inc., which became public in 2012 and was taken private in 2016, is going public again. The security company filed plans with the Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering. The filing does not say how many shares will be sold but funds affiliated with Apollo Global Management LLC, which currently own the company, will continue to hold more than 50 percent of the stock, it said. Boca Raton-based ADT is one of Jacksonville’s largest employers with more than 3,000 workers. The company employs

Inaugural event honors legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. By Max Marbut Associate Editor If having every seat reserved before an event debuts is indicative of potential longevity, the inaugural “Unity Day Luncheon” on Thursday at
River City Brewing Co. signals a long-term presence. The meeting of members of the D.W. Perkins Bar Association, which led the event, Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association, Jacksonville Asian-American Bar Associa-
tion, Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and The Jacksonville Bar Association had two goals. One, it was an opportunity for the legal community to be the first this year to recognize the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday Jan. 15. Two, it brought local voluntary Bar associations together to foster better understanding and collaboration, said Amber
Donley, president of D.W. Perkins. Donley said the event, attended by 119 people, mirrors King’s philosophies of choosing love over hate, unity instead of divisiveness and action instead of inaction. “It started as an idea to bring together the Bar associations to unify our community. It’s JBA

“It’s a great piece of real estate,” Marc Angelo said. He said he plans to clean up the site, repaint the building, repair the roof, seal-coat and stripe the parking lot and install new handrails. “It’s going to have a fresh look,” he said. Angelo said the occupancy is 90 percent. “There is a camaraderie of tenants there. They are proud of it and I want to give them something to be proud of,” he said. Angelo said the center is a Jacksonville Beach landmark. Angelo also is a partner in the Third Street Village across the street. Tenants there include Roy’s and Bonefish Grill. He called Costa Verde a “long-term play.”

ABC Fine Wine & Spirits to rebuild in Mandarin ABC Fine Wine & Spirits intends to redevelop its Mandarin site at 9436 San Jose Blvd. with its new prototype. The city is reviewing a permit application for an almost $2 million construction project to build a 13,005-square-foot store on about an acre. ABC Properties Ltd. of Orlando owns the property. The new ABC will be built behind the existing store, allowing operations to continue during construction. The site is at southwest San Jose Boulevard and Cardinal Point Drive. When the new store opens, the existing one will be torn down. Orlando-based ABC said in April that the interior design was the latest for its stores, with a central guest services counter with wine taps, a growler filling station and a cash register. The 6313 Roosevelt Blvd. store, which opened Jan. 25, was the first in the state to be built with a new center experiential area, which ABC said will be replicated in the San Jose store.

Costa Verde Plaza acquired
Costa Verde Plaza is under new ownership. A Rosenbaum family group led by developer Marc Angelo paid $5 million for the property at 2415 S. Third St. in Jacksonville. The 27,432-square-foot shopping center was built in 1973. The Casa Maria restaurant is one of its tenants. Marc and Beth Angelo are managers of 2415 3rd Street South LLC, which bought the 1.59-acre property Dec. 21 from Costa Verde Properties Inc., led by Lee Najjar with a mailing address in Atlanta.

about 18,000 people overall. ADT says it is the largest security monitoring company in the U.S. and Canada with about $4 billion in annual revenue. ADT was spun off from Tyco International Ltd. in October 2012 as an independent public company, with shares distributed to Tyco stockholders. Apollo bought the company for $6.9 billion in May 2016.
Gerdau selling steel plants Commercial Metals Co. last week announced an agreement to buy 33 rebar fabrication facilities and four steel mills from Gerdau S.A., including its 280-employee Jacksonville mill. Texas-based CMC painted the deal as positive for the local plants. “We plan to invest in these facilities to create efficiencies utilizing our expertise in the latest innovations for steel manufacturing and fabrication. We look forward to welcoming the approximately 2,700 employees of these facilities to CMC,” Chief Executive Officer Barbara Smith said in a news release. Brazil-based Gerdau said the sale is part of a transformation of its global operations. “This deal represents an important milestone in our strategy to reduce financial leverage and focus on better return opportunities in the markets where we operate,” Executive Vice Chairman André Gerdau Johannpeter said in Gerdau’s news release.
CMC agreed to pay $600 million in cash to buy the Gerdau plants. The companies hope to complete the deal before the end of this year.
FirstAtlantic stockholders have good year National Commerce Corp. started the new year by announcing it completed its acquisition of Jacksonville-based FirstAtlantic Holdings Inc. Birmingham, Alabama-based National Commerce intends to continue to operate the bank’s eight branches under the FirstAtlantic Bank trade name, with the same management team. National Commerce bought FirstAtlantic for a combination of cash and stock valued at $108 million. FirstAtlantic stockholders had a choice of receiving $17.25 in cash or 0.44 shares of National Commerce stock for each of their shares. With National Commerce closing 2017 at $40.25, the value of the shares issued to FirstAtlantic stockholders was $17.71 each. FirstAtlantic closed 2017 at $17.64, before the merger was completed. Because of the buyout, FirstAtlantic’s stock finished the year with a 57.5 percent gain, the best performance among all Jacksonville-based companies. Another Jacksonville-based banking company, Atlantic Coast Financial Corp., rose 38.7 percent after it agreed to a buyout
by Ameris Bancorp. That was the third best gain among Jacksonville companies. CSX had the second-best gain, 53.1 percent, after a big runup in the stock in anticipation of Harrison’s impact on the company.
Rayonier AM downgraded Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc. had the fourth best gain among Jacksonville companies last year, at 32.3 percent. Because of that gain, Vertical Research Partners analyst Chip Dillon downgraded the maker of cellulose specialties products from “buy” to “hold” last week. “Over the past five plus months this name has risen by 40 percent to a year-end 2017 price of $20.45, and is now just 11 percent below our $23 one-year target price,” Dillon said in his research report. “Given this company’s volatility, we do not see sufficient upside at its current level to maintain a Buy rating,” he said. Rayonier AM fell $1.27 to $19.28 Thursday after Dillon’s downgrade.
Black Knight is early beneficiary from tax reform It looks like Black Knight Inc. will be an early beneficiary of the new federal income tax law, as two analysts last week upgraded the company last week in part because of the lower corporate tax rate. Ashish Sabadra of Deutsche Bank upgraded the Jacksonvillebased mortgage technology company from “hold” to “buy” and Glenn Greene of Oppenheimer
upgraded it from “perform” to “outperform.” Both analysts said they expect Black Knight’s federal income tax rate to drop from 37 percent to 23 percent this year. “Black Knight should be one of the largest beneficiaries of tax reform within our coverage universe. Black Knight earns almost all of its earnings domestically,” Greene said in his research note. Greene raised his earning per share estimate for this year by 22 percent to $1.92 because of the tax cut. Sabadra raised his 2018 estimate by 27 cents to $1.95 a share and his 2019 estimate by 46 cents to $2.28. Sabadra also said provisions in the tax law that could impact the mortgage market, including limits on deductibility of property taxes and mortgage interest, “should be manageable” for Black Knight. The analysis of Black Knight makes you wonder what other stocks will be getting upgrades, since everybody should be raising earnings estimates based on the lower tax rates. But the analysts have other reasons to like Black Knight. Black Knight dominates its field, providing processing services for about two-thirds of all U.S. first mortgage loans. Sabadra said market share will pass 70 percent as several new contracts are implemented, which “bodes well for cross-selling second lien mortgage servicing software, origination software, and data & analytics products.” Jacksonville-based title insurer Fidelity National Financial Inc. last year spun off its majority stake in Black Knight, which also should help the stock, Sabadra said.

“Post the distribution to FNF shareholders, Black Knight will benefit from a less complex corporate structure and could be eligible for index inclusion,” he said. “Due to implementation delays and refinance origination headwinds, Black Knight’s growth disappointed during 2017, and shares modestly underperformed the market,” Greene said. “That said, shares appear the most compelling in some time, given the combination of significant tax reform accretion, a significant signed backlog, and current valuation,” he said. Black Knight’s stock rose 16.8 percent to $44.15 last year. Sabadra set a price target of $52 and Greene set a target of $55 for the stock.

Lawmakers seeking control of JNC appointments Lawyers could be taken out of the process. When the Legislature convenes Tuesday in Tallahassee, one of the items on the 2018 agenda will be a proposal to relieve The Florida Bar of its authority to appoint members to the state’s 26 Judicial Nominating Commissions. A bill (HB 753) sponsored in the House by Rep. Frank White, R-Pensacola, with a companion bill (SB 1030) sponsored by Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, would put the authority to recommend to the governor lawyers for four seats on the 9-member panels Kilbane in the hands of the Senate president and House speaker instead of The Florida Bar board of governors. The governor makes the other five appointments, two of whom must be members of The Florida Bar. White contends that elected officials should have a larger role in deciding who interviews and recommends to the governor candidates for judicial vacancies. You might think that would cause at least a mild uproar from members of the Bar, but even if the bill is enacted, changing who appoints attorneys to the commissions wouldn’t have any effect

on the candidate vetting and selection process, said Patrick Kilbane, chair of the 4th Judicial Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission and general counsel and wealth adviser at Ullmann Brown Wealth Advisors. “There still would be members of The Florida Bar serving on the commissions, and we all take the same oath. You’re going to get outstanding members of the Bar either way,” he said.

The law firm of Rogers Towers has promoted two new shareholders in its Jacksonville office. Meg Hixon joined the firm in 2005 and is a member of the Real Estate Department. A member of the Business and Tax Department, he earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the Florida State University College of Law.
Michael Wodrich, a former shareholder with Rogers Towers in Jacksonville, has joined Stellar as senior vice president and general counsel. He also will serve on the Jacksonvillebased design build architecture and engineering firm’s board of directors. Wodrich’s focus at Stellar will be risk management. While at Rogers Towers, he represented contractors, architects and engineers in contract negotiations with developers, owners and subcontractors. about pooling our talents and resources to make a difference,” Donley said. “As attorneys and judges, people look to us for leadership,” she said. Michael Higer, president of The Florida Bar, took the day off from his office at Berger Singerman in Miami to make the keynote address at the meeting and “take time out to show some respect for Dr. Martin Luther King,” he said. Higer recalled his memories of his “Miami, Jewish, liberal home” on April 4, 1968, when King was assassinated at a motel in Memphis. “There in the living room, mom and dad were watching TV. Mom was crying and dad was doing his best to comfort her,” Higer said. He said he didn’t understand until later, when his father came into his room and explained that someone had murdered the civil rights leader. “My sense of justice was forged in that moment,” Higer said. In October, Higer attended a meeting in Memphis and visited the site where King was killed. The experience brought back memories of that day in 1968 and made him consider the present and the future, he said. “I thought about all the progress we’ve made – but I also thought about all the work we still need to do.” Donley said she hopes “Unity Day” will become an annual event for the legal community and that it can create a sense of common purpose. “I don’t want this to be one and done,” she said. “We have to ensure that this continues.” The Unity Luncheon was sponsored by The Florida Bar Diversity and Inclusion Committee and by the Bench Bar Fund of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.

“I can’t really sit still for more than five minutes,” said Asghar Syed. That’s one reason the shareholder at Smith Hulsey & Busey built an impressive resume of public service. Syed is a member of The Jacksonville Bar Association board of governors and serves on the board of directors for Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville.
Over the past two years, he also has been dedicated to serving the Muslim American community. FROM THE PRESIDENT
The Christmas presents that Santa Claus forgot to deliver
TAD DELEGAL JBA PRESIDENT
I hope that everyone got what they wanted for Christmas (or for Hanukkah or whatever you may celebrate).
We had a great holiday at our house, with all of the kids home from college and grad school and a chance to see family. This past year has given me (and The Jacksonville Bar) a lot of gifts, including a great new executive director in Jim Bailey, and a dedicated association office staff. We recently added Craig Shoup, whom we were able to pry away from the Public Defender’s Office, as part of the team. We have an active board of governors, and an outstanding executive committee: Katie Dearing, Elizabeth Ferguson and Michelle Barnett. Add to that mix an enthusiastic group of section and committee chairs, and you can say that we’ve had Christmas for some time now.
Some folks have not been as lucky, though. While our great Senior Holiday Project committee members, led by chair Kimberly Jones of Baumann, Gant & Keeley, were able to deliver more than 400 needed presents to area seniors, they couldn’t get to everyone who really needed a certain present. Here is a list of some of those who didn’t get the presents they really needed — and the gifts they still need: n The Florida State University football team: A copy of “The Idiot’s Guide to Coaching Four Years’ Worth of Top-Five Draft Classes.” n The University of Florida football team: That Harry Potter memory-erasing spell to erase all memory of the 2017
season, and Dan Mullen (oh yeah, we did get that.) n The Florida Supreme Court: A little love from the state Legislature. n The UF basketball team: Last year’s defense. n Coastal areas: Global warming skeptic education. n The entire state of Florida: A hurricane protection shield. n Jim Bailey: A decent Jacksonville Bar president. n Julie Delegal: A husband who is trainable after 25 years. n San Marco: That promised Publix to finally open. n Shad Khan: Never mind. He got everything.

YOUNG LAWYERS
Postseason football: Plenty of excitement, around town, but not much economic impact
ANDREW SCOTT THE JBA YOUNG LAWYERS SECTION BOARD OF GOVERNORS
For only the second time in franchise history, the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday hosted a home playoff game. Although I have had my fair share of disappointment with the Jaguars (mainly through the dreaded Gus Bradley era), my family and I remain season ticket holders. Unfortunately, that level of commitment did not exist for plenty of other Jaguars fans, which was evident in seasons past by the half-empty stadium year in and year out. Yet, now that the Jaguars are actually good again, the city has been buzzing and appears to have been reinvigorated. So, aside from civic pride and serious bragging rights — that’s right Colts, Texans and Titans — are there any economic impacts associated with playoff appearances, Super Bowl appearances and hosting the Super Bowl? The short answer: Barely, if any. In a 2001 study, “The Economic Impact of Postseason Play in Professional Sports,” it was concluded that real percapita income in cities with professional sports teams from 1969-97 showed that postseason appearances were not associated with any change in the level of real income in those cities. However, in the city that was home to the winning team from the Super Bowl, annual personal income was found to be higher by about $140, which perhaps reflected a link between winning the Super Bowl and the productivity of workers in the cities. One would think that hosting a Super Bowl would lead to far different results. I mean, the event has practically become a national holiday. However, the study found that hosting the Super Bowl had no measurable impact

on income in the host city. This is contrary to numbers that often are espoused by the NFL and host city government officials. The main problem is that capacity constraints in a city lead to what is called “leakages.” A lot of the money fans spend in a host Super Bowl city, flows or “leaks” right out of the host city to far-off corporate headquarters. As told by Sports Illustrated writer John Donavan, a rather dramatic example came in 2005, when Jacksonville hosted the Super Bowl. To alleviate the shortage of hotel rooms, the host committee arranged for six cruise ships to dock in the area, providing lodg-
ing for up to 7,600 guests. However, after the big weekend, the cruise ships pulled up anchor and sailed away, taking revenue they generated with them. As a result, all spending that occurred on the ships was subject to nearly 100 percent leakage from the Jacksonville economy. Given that, if a Super Bowl is not likely to have any real economic impact on a host city, it is doubtful that the Jaguars home playoff game on Sunday had any real economic impact on Jacksonville. However, you can tell Jacksonville is excited for the Jaguars as shown by the fact that playoff tickets sold out in about two hours after they were available to the
general public. That being said, I think the city will continue to buzz with excitement, particularly if the Jaguars have another winning season. I do not think people will celebrate victories by merely going home afterward, which will mean more money funneled into the local economy. So, sit back and enjoy, it has been a long time coming, Jacksonville. Go Jaguars. Make a resolution to get involved in The JBA no shortage of opportunities. HOW TO HELP OTHERS GET INVOLVED

BY JAMIE KARPMAN AND LEAH GORYL TRANSACTIONAL LAW SECTION CO-CHAIRS
You know there is huge value in your Jacksonville Bar Association membership, but are you taking advantage of all that JBA has to offer? Are you helping your peers and colleagues see that benefit too? It’s a new year, another opportunity to take stock of your personal and professional life. This year is your chance to get more engaged. By getting involved and getting others involved, you will build your network and reputation, improve the image of our profession in the local community, develop mentors and make friends. Jacksonville is a great place to practice law, and The JBA is a big part of the reason why. THERE IS A PLACE FOR YOU
The association has six substantive sections: Community Outreach, Family and Children, Litigation, Member Services, Practicing with Professionalism and Transactional Law and the Young Lawyers Section for lawyers 35 years old or younger or who have been practicing less than five years. Each section includes committees catering to all interests and practice areas. In addition to the expansive substantive programming and content available to members, such as free and discounted live and recorded continuing legal

education seminars, JBA offers its members opportunities to provide pro bono service and participate in community service and charity fundraisers, mentoring for young lawyers, a lawyer referral service, professionalism resources and more. The organization also wants its members to have fun. There are opportunities for members to gather with other attorneys and judges informally through participation in The JBA Sports League, at the annual Bench & Bar Holiday Party, section happy hours and many other social and community events. HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Whether you are a law stu-
dent, new lawyer, young lawyer or seasoned lawyer, it is easy to get involved with JBA. The first step is, of course, to join. Next, get to know the organization. Read the e-newsletters and the Bar Bulletin in the Daily Record, check out jaxbar.org, join committees on your profile page and attend the monthly luncheons and other events. It may seem overwhelming at first because JBA offers so much, but select one or two events or committees that interest you and just attend. Introduce yourself and get to know the other members. Ask questions. Start developing personal and professional relationships and you will begin to see
value immediately. Want to really get engaged? Be a future leader? Speak up and volunteer. Donate your time and energy. There are many opportunities, but JBA leaders, including committee chairs and vice chairs, need to know that you are willing and able to help. You can take on a small role, such as buying a gift for a lowincome senior as part of the Holiday Project, or a large role like volunteering to serve as a committee chair. Plan a lunchand-learn CLE for a substantive committee, serve on a committee for a charity fundraiser with the Young Lawyers Section, or volunteer for a community service or pro bono project. There is
If you are part of JBA leadership, be on the lookout for members seeking to be more engaged in the new year. If someone volunteers, find an opportunity for that person to help. Do not miss an opportunity to develop future JBA leaders. All members can help spread the word. Tell others about the events you attend and the committees in which you are involved. Share this wealth of opportunities with your colleagues and friends. Many events are open to nonmembers, so check the event calendar on The JBA website. Encouraging others to get involved will help you get more out of your membership by building connections, and it improves the depth and breadth of offerings JBA is able to provide to all of its members and our community. New faces and ideas are welcome at JBA. Maybe a close colleague has been involved in another professional organization for years and has a great idea of how the interests of its members and JBA intersect, leading to a cross-organizational event where members of both organizations can learn and network with each other. There are lots of opportunities to take advantage of your JBA membership in 2018.

Why criticizing President Trump isn’t political
TAD DELEGAL
A few months ago, I took a humorous swipe at President Donald Trump. Afterward, I received an email from an active member of the Bar, suggesting that The JBA shouldn’t be involved in politics. I agree that the association shouldn’t be involved in political disputes, since our members have differing views, and the JBA president isn’t elected to be a political leader. I have come to believe, however, that criticizing Trump isn’t political. Rather, it’s far more essential to our system of government and law.
The most damning Trump criticism has nothing to do with his political positions. Indeed, much of the most insightful criticism of him has come from some of the most conservative voices. George Will, who has been a leader of conservative thought for 40 years, has stated that Trump’s is an “untrained mind bereft of information and married to stratospheric self-confidence.” While Jeff Flake and Bob Corker have lately been criticized for speaking out against Trump, they actually have two of the most conservative voting records in the U.S. Senate. Corker warned, as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, that Trump was moving toward “World War III,” and added that the president was treating the office “like a reality show.” The usually nonpartisan USA Today recently opined that Trump’s un-presidential behavior makes him unfit to clean the toilets in his predecessor’s presidential library. So, what does this have to do
with our profession? In reality, a lot. Our profession is based on institutional respect, and specifically, respect for the court system. During the election campaign, both the ABA and ABOTA presidents issued open letters condemning candidate Trump’s allegation of bias on the part of the federal judge of Mexican heritage handling Trump’s fraud trial. As president, Trump has continued to criticize judges and the judicial system after suffering legal setbacks, further undermining the American legal system. He has now targeted the FBI, in the face of the agency’s investigation into a foreign government’s alleged interference with our country’s system of laws. Our profession involves the presentation of competing versions of events to judges and juries, with an expectation that a just result will prevail. In that process, we rely on the concept of objectively verifiable facts and the goal of reducing or removing bias from the deci-
sion-making process. To date, the Trump presidency has rejected those concepts. Instead, Donald Trump has encouraged the belief that no institution (including the courts) can be immune from political and personal bias, and therefore that no institution is worthy of respect or deference. A truly frightening objective fact is the absolute number of lies that this president has told since his inauguration. While all political figures (and all people) tell some number of untruths, consciously or unconsciously, Trump told 103 outright lies in 10 months, compared with 18 told by former President Barack Obama in eight years. If you doubt the statistic, go to The New York Times website, where the specific statements are listed, and judge for yourself. We are a nation of laws, and not of men (or people). Our democracy and our legal system only works when we are willing to debate ideas and policies, rather than personalities. The obligation goes both ways. Liberals who dislike Trump must be able to work
with him to promote policies consistent with the country’s needs; those who voted for Trump (whatever their motivation) should be willing to reject bad policies or bad behavior. The history of the last 100 years of world politics shows the dangers of cults of personality. Roughly 30 percent of our population is apparently willing to support a man even if (as he conceded) he was to go out to the street and randomly murder someone. Such an unwavering and unquestioning loyalty is unAmerican and contrary to the precepts of our profession. I realize that writing a column such as this one is not the norm, but unfortunately, we live in farfrom-normal times. As we move into 2018, let’s hope that conduct emanating from the White House is less like a TV reality show, and more reflective of the weight and import of the presidency. If, however, Trump’s behavior doesn’t change, we as lawyers should not be hesitant to challenge it in our communities and, wherever appropriate, in our courts.

Syed: Talk about a Muslim ban ‘woke me up’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5
Syed traveled extensively as an undergrad. He presented a workshop at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil; studied in Chiapas, Mexico; and worked on an independent study in Renala Khurd, Pakistan. He helped launch the America China Teaching Program and taught English for a year in China. Syed and his wife, Sabeen, were among the early architects of TEDxJacksonville. He established financial and in-kind support for the venture, while she focused on programming. Last year, Syed initiated a nonpartisan get-out-the-vote campaign for Jacksonville’s Muslim-American community, complete with voter registration at Islamic centers, phone banking and interfaith gatherings. He also appeared on the First Coast Connect public radio broadcast to discuss his community’s views on the so-called “Muslim ban,” presented an anti-hate crime resolution to U.S. Rep. John Rutherford from Jacksonville and is helping produce a video documentary on Muslim American Social Services, a Muslim-run free care clinic in Jacksonville. The Syeds are expecting their first child next month, but decided not to find out if the baby is a boy or girl. He’d rather not have any preconceived notions of who he or she will be. This is an edited version of an interview with Syed, who has been a member of The JBA for more than seven years.
What is it like working with Steve Busey?
When did you know you wanted to be a lawyer?
MLI is American and Canadian Muslims traveling to Israel to learn about Judaism and Jewish peoplehood. It is hosted by the Shalom Hartman Institute and is the brainchild of Abdullah Antepli, chaplain of Duke University, and Yossi Halevi Klein, an Israeli author and academic at Shalom Hartman. Typically, when Muslims and Jews work together, there’s a tacit agreement that they are not going to talk about the IsraeliPalestinian conflict. It’s too hard. MLI flips the framework on its head. In MLI, there’s an
I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I went to law school not necessarily knowing that I wanted to be a lawyer. I did well and really enjoyed law school, but didn’t know I wanted to be a lawyer. I got a job at a fantastic law firm and still didn’t know. And then one day, you wake up and realize, “I’m actually quite good at this,” and I genuinely enjoy what I do. But I’m definitely not one of those people who knew as a kid.
Steve’s my mentor. He’s taught me everything I know. Steve has two notable traits. He has an incredible ability to simplify complicated things. He gets right to the heart of the matter and, whether it’s oral argument or a brief, he presents what the court needs to hear and nothing more. Here’s the law and here’s the facts. Period. Steve’s other trait is that as things get more difficult and as things get more intense, he gets calmer. As a team, I think we perform best under pressure.
What did you learn about yourself when you were teaching English in China?
You learn a lot about people as a traveler in a completely foreign environment. You see their hospitality and patience and their core values. And all of those things provide lessons that you take with you. When you don’t speak the same language — when there are few English speakers around and when your Mandarin is atrocious like mine was — you find other ways to communicate and find commonality with folks. At the schools where I taught English, I was blessed to be surrounded by truly hospitable people that really appreciated my interest in their culture and history. I’d like to think I return that favor when people are interested in my cultural heritage.
Talk about your involvement with the Muslim Leadership Initiative?
assumption that unless we can talk about Israel and Palestine, we can’t really talk about anything. The conversations we had in Israel were extraordinarily frank. They required a great deal of patience. And while I’m not sure anyone changed their mind about terrorism or Palestinian human rights, there’s no question that all sides came away with a far deeper understanding of the conflict and, in the process, developed some real trust. Describe some of those conversations.
There’s a mosque in Hebron where, in 1994, an Israeli settler, who was actually an American physician, committed a horrible terrorist attack against Muslims as they were making their dawn prayer. Baruch Goldstein murdered 29 worshipers and injured 125 others. We sat in the mosque and heard a recounting of the incident. We could see the bullet holes in the old mosque tiles. And sitting with us was the imam (leader) of the mosque, whose brother was killed in the attack. Later that evening, we were with the Palestinian parents of a young boy and a young girl who were killed by the Israel Defense Forces in two separate incidents. Their 8-year-old daughter was with us in the room and started shaking as we heard about what happened. One of the really definitive moments was the day after Hebron when our Israeli hosts listened to us vent for maybe two hours. Then we took a break. Then we sat down again and listened to the Israelis vent. The statement that really stuck with me was one of the older Israeli professors saying, “I’ve been to more funerals for my kids’ friends than I have for my friends.” But the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not my cause. For me, the goal of MLI is to develop Muslim and Jewish collaboration in North America. We’ve begun that work with a series of interfaith and intercultural events in Jacksonville.
I am a big supporter of Muslim American Social Services that’s operated here since 2010. The services are available to any indigent uninsured patient. It’s not just for the Muslim community and most of their patients are not Muslim. There are several organizations that do what MASS does, but because its executive director has a background in software engineering, they’re really good at tracking and reporting data. The hospitals really appreciate what they do and the transparency with which they do it.
It seems like you put a lot of time and energy in these programs. Why is it so important to you?
I grew up in a Muslim country. My parents are very traditional and while I’m not particularly religious, I’ve always had an immense respect for the Islamic faith, tradition and culture. In America, the MuslimAmerican community is still in its infancy. Muslims started coming to the United States after the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965. They came as technicians, scientists and doctors. So, while the community is well-educated and has plenty of resources, it lacks sophistication. You see that in the community’s failure to affect public discourse. Leading politicians routinely trash Muslims without consequence. But it’s interesting. Being Muslim wasn’t a big part of my identity until recently. I’ve definitely become a lot more vocal about it the last couple of years.
Why the last couple of years?
We had a leading contender for the U.S. presidency talking about a Muslim ban. If that’s not going to wake up the community, I don’t know what will. It certainly woke me up. But most people in my community aren’t interested in playing the victim. Across the board,

I hear the Muslim community saying, “How can we engage civically? How can we give back? How can we be positive influencers here?” There’s a strong feeling that the way we’re going to change the paradigm is by actually showing up and doing the work. That’s what the doctors are doing with MASS. Are these issues even more important to you as you and Sabeen prepare for your child?
Yes, very much so. We were at a birthing class at Baptist Downtown and the nurse made a comment about how, when you’re preparing to bring a life into this world, it’s really important to stay positive even when it feels like there are a lot of bad things happening all around you. The conversations we’ve been having are heavy. But there’s no running away from them. And, at the core, we really are hopeful and optimistic. We think Jacksonville will be a great place for our kids to grow up.
What is the best lesson your parents taught you about being a parent?
My parents had diametrically different personalities. My dad was always very to the point. You need an education. You need a job. How are your grades? My mom is the polar opposite. She’s much more of a fluid thinker, very intelligent, very high EQ and very good at understanding people. The tag-team between the two of them was really good. I feel the same way about Sabeen and myself. I think we’ll have a very different approach to parenting and the team effort is going to make all the difference.
What do you want the world to be as your child is growing up?
I really want our kids to honor where they came from and for their unique identity to be a badge of pride. But, when it comes to being a citizen, I want the things that make our kids different to be completely irrelevant. I want them to be judged on merit, not their religion or the color of their skin.

IN THE LAW . . .
ABOUT EDWARDS
ASHLEA EDWARDS
Associate attorney at GrayRobinson Age: 30 Education: Undergraduate/ graduate/law: Louisiana State University/Florida Coastal School of Law
By Max Marbut • Associate Editor
Ashlea Edwards, an associate attorney at GrayRobinson, was elected without opposition for the 4th Judicial Circuit’s Seat 1 on The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division board of governors. She serves on The Jacksonville Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section board of governors and the Florida Coastal School of Law alumni board of directors. When Edwards isn’t practicing law, she’s the director of engagement for TEDxJacksonville and she’s an editor of The JBA’s monthly Bar Bulletin. Who or what inspired you to become a lawyer? I didn’t have any lawyers in my family, but had plenty of role models between my parents and grandparents to show me the importance of being self-sufficient and driven. One person (other than your spouse or partner) who inspires you: I am lucky enough to still have both of my grandmothers. They have sacrificed throughout their lives in different ways and are some of the strongest women I know. How do you relate your undergraduate degree to your practice of law? One of my undergraduate degrees is in psychology. As an attorney, I am able to act as a counselor by listening to clients and co-workers and identifying important issues in the case. How did you decide your practice area? And why have you chosen that? I am a general civil litigator with a focus in bankruptcy and commercial litigation. I always knew I wanted to be a litigator and as a general civil litigator, I am able to explore and assist with all types of litigation.
Hometown: Arlington, Texas Family: My boyfriend, Paul Palasz, and our two fur babies, Isabel and Gus.
What has been the biggest change in your practice area since you passed the Bar? The one consistent in my practice is civil procedure. There have been some recent Florida decisions that move away from the usual strict compliance (in certain scenarios) when interpreting the validity of offers of judgment or proposals for settlement.
Favorite book: “A Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley or “Deception Point” by Dan Brown. Book you’re reading now: “The Court and The World” by Justice Stephen Breyer and “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson.
If I could change anything in the legal system, I would ... Try to instill the importance of mental and physical health while still being dedicated to work. What community service have you pursued and why? I have participated in some pro bono events with Jacksonville Area Legal Aid. I also do my best to stay involved in the local legal community, which includes being a mentor to a high school student. Over the almost three years as her mentor, I think she’s taught me more than I’ve taught her.
Websites or apps you can’t live without: Pandora. I am a big singer (at least around the house and in the car).
Special to the Daily Record
What’s your advice for new lawyers? Work hard and immerse yourself in the profession, but stay true to who you are.
Attorney Ashlea Edwards says her undergraduate degree in psychology helps her counsel her clients and colleagues.
Favorite nonwork activities: Running and playing with my puppies.
