The Wawa at 4866 Gate Parkway was taking shape last month at The Crossing at Town Center. It’s expected to open this month.
Wawas here, there, everywhere Gas station and convenience store chain has at least 18 locations in works across Northeast Florida. By Karen Brune Mathis Editor Wawa Inc. considers Northeast Florida a 40-store market — and it’s almost halfway there in identifying locations. At least 18 sites have surfaced in Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties. The Pennsylvania-based retailer
intends to open its first three stores before year-end. The first two stores are scheduled to open Dec. 13 at 6787 Wilson Blvd. in Westside and at 678 Blanding Blvd. in Orange Park. The third store, at 4866 Gate Parkway, is expected to open by year-end. Wawa identified several more stores to open through the summer. Others
are under development or in review, but no completion dates have been announced. While the company has not provided its list of sites, public documents outline where Wawa is looking for other potential locations. At the April 6 groundbreaking for the store along Gate Parkway at The Crossing at Town Center, Wawa CEO
Chris Gheysens said the company invests $6 million into each store, translating into a $240 million investment in Northeast Florida. Wawa also hires about 40 employees per store, working out to 1,600 jobs. Wawa, based in Wawa, PennsylvaWawa

nia, operates more than 750 fuel and convenience stores in six states. It opened its first Florida store in 2012 in Orlando. Five years later, it has opened more than 115 stores across the state. Wawa said in September it plans to open 25 to 30 stores annually in Florida for the next several years. Its most popular food items are built-to-order hoagies, fresh coffee, breakfast sandwiches and specialty beverages. There’s no certainty that all 18 sites will be developed. Some deals won’t be completed until terms are reached for land and permits are approved. Competitors, including Jacksonville-based Gate Petroleum Co., are expanding as well. Misty Skipper, Gate vice president of marketing and communications, said the largest concentration of its stores is in Northeast Florida. It has been building and redeveloping stores and also is launching stand-alone Gate Express Carwashes around the area. “Gate has never been without competition,” Skipper said. “Clean, bright, spacious stores with a quality selection of fresh food will allow us to continue to be competitive. We work every day to make sure we are providing the highest-quality goods and services to our customers,” she said.

summer. For their parts, Simmons and Wiley were given lesser sentences. Wiley, who founded the charity in 2011 to honor her mother, received 21 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and is ordered to pay $454,515 in restitution. She also received a $654,000 forfeiture judgment. Simmons was ordered to 48 months in prison, three years of supervised release and will have to pay $452,515 in restitution to the government along with a $727,964 forfeiture judgment. Simmons also will have to repay $91,621 to the U.S. House of Representatives for creating a fake congressional staffing position for his sister from 2001-16. The three have 14 days to appeal Corrigan’s decision. Only Brown’s attorneys told the judge an appeal was imminent. As a condition of their vol-
untary surrender, Brown cannot leave the Middle District of Florida, and Simmons and Wiley are bound to Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Brown’s attorney, James Smith, asked Corrigan to waive her travel restrictions since she has business to attend to in the nation’s capital this week. Corrigan said he would review that request. If no appeals are filed, or if they are dismissed, all three will be required to report to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons no earlier than Jan. 8. Brown, a Democrat, served Florida’s 5th Congressional District from 1993 through early 2017. She was defeated in the November election by Democrat Al Lawson, who took office Jan. 3.

$664,292 forfeiture. The 12-term congresswoman’s sentence comes after she was convicted in May on 18 felony counts that included wire fraud, mail fraud, concealing material facts on congressional financial disclosure forms and filing false tax returns. The government argued that Brown used her clout to raise more than $830,000 for One Door, telling donors the money was for serving underprivileged youth through scholarships and educational services. Instead, prosecutors said the money was used to pay for special events hosted or put on in her name, NFL and concert tickets and other personal financial matters. Brown has maintained her innocence by placing the blame on Simmons and Wiley. Simmons and Wiley pleaded guilty to their charges and testified against Brown on behalf of the FBI during the trial last

New York-based company distributes medical products. Dynarex announced last week it opened its 280,000-squarefoot distribution center at 14500 Hyatt Road in North Jacksonville. Dynarex, a medical products distributor, said the warehouse will serve as a hub to support its national and international network. The Jacksonville location is the largest of six Dynarex distribution centers in the U.S. with the other five in Arkansas, Ohio, Nevada and two in New York. “This huge new Florida location will greatly benefit our distributors because we are so close to the port of Jacksonville and to Jacksonville International Airport,” said Dynarex President and CEO Zalman Tenenbaum in a news release. The almost 100-acre property is between Interstate 95 and North Main Street, north of Interstate 295 and River City Marketplace. JIA is west of the site and JaxPort facilities are south of it. Dynarex products include wound care, antiseptic products, patient and instrument care, diagnostics, ointments and creams, first aid and other items. Principals of Orangeburg, New York-based Dynarex bought the office-warehouse in June 2016 for $3.28 million. The property was developed in 1984 for Pic N’ Save, a former Jacksonville-based discount chain. Dynarex invested at least $1.64 million into renovations, according to building permits issued since February. That puts Dynarex’s investment at nearly $5 million. Dynarex, established in 1967, previously leased about 75,000 square feet among two Jacksonville locations. A spokeswoman Monday was researching the job count and potential increase.

“I love my job. “It’s hard work. But it fits me, because I’m a people person. I love to meet new people and talk to them about their businesses, to find out what we can do to help them. “I know I’m in advertising sales, but I see myself more as a marketing consultant and business partner. My job is to help all my customers grow their business. “I love the creative challenge of helping them figure out how best to market their businesses, how to help bring them new customers and figure out strategies and business plans to help them succeed. “We’re like marketing and advertising doctors. We help them solve their pain. “We make a difference … I find that very rewarding.” Cyndi Gustafson Multimedia Advertising Executive West Orange Times & Observer

Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores operates more than 430 locations in 41 states, including 14 in Florida. The Pecan Park Road store opened with Chester’s Chicken and Subway restaurants. It also features seven showers, 82 truck parking spaces, a Love’s Truck Tire Care center, cardless fueling and CAT Scales for weighing trucks. kmathis@jaxdailyrecord.com @MathisKb (904) 356-2466
