United CEO cancels presentation to the World Affairs Council From Staff Embattled United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz has canceled his presentation scheduled at today’s World Affairs Council of Jacksonville Global Business Luncheon at the Jacksonville University Davis College of Business. The council posted that Munoz was unable to attend “due to unfolding circumstances.” Munoz Those circumstances involved a passenger dragged off a plane by authorities at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The man refused to give up his seat on a United flight to Louisville, Ky., after the airline said it needed room for crew members. Video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking a storm of public outrage at United.

Munoz said the airline won’t allow police to haul seated paying passengers off its flights again. “To remove a booked, paid, seated passenger —we can’t do that,” Munoz told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Wednesday. Munoz was president and COO of Jacksonville-based CSX Corp. before joining United in September 2015. The World Affairs Council said those registered for the sold-out event would be contacted about refunds. It encouraged members to consider rolling over the ticket to an upcoming council event or apply the cost as a donation to its educational outreach programs. The next Global Business Luncheon on June 6 at EverBank Field is its last of the season. NFL International Executive Vice President Mark Waller is scheduled to talk about “The NFL: Across the Pond and Beyond.”

With a large downtown footprint, they have defined themselves through placemaking including redeveloping their waterfront. They are supporting and attracting jobs in industries varying from banking to technology to distribution services,” he wrote Another Jacksonville-Toronto connecting is Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan. Peyton wrote that Khan submitted a proposal to redevelop a large portion of the sports and entertainment area in Jacksonville and that he also has significant investments in Toronto. “In 2016, he purchased the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto and residential towers located in the heart of the city’s shopping district. We are delighted that we will be staying at Mr. Khan’s hotel and that he will host a dinner for our group there during the trip,” Peyton wrote. The email said bronze-level or higher investors have the first opportunity to register. Registration opens to chamber trustees May 1.

Peyton is president of Gate Petroleum Co. He served as mayor from 2003-11.

Daily’s adding Dashes — next up at Gate Parkway First Coast Energy LLP wants to add a Dash food service to its Daily’s store at 4991 Gate Parkway, south of Butler Boulevard. Spokeswoman Andrea Kane said the company is targeting a late May or early June completion. Dash is Daily’s fast-casual, cafe concept that sells madeto-order breakfast and lunch sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts and specialty coffee drinks. First Coast Energy is growing the Dash brand in the Jacksonville market. With 29 Daily’s gas stations and convenience stores in the area, 17 have a Dash. “We will continue to grow and as we open more Daily’s stores they will always have a Dash in them,” Kane said. She also said the decision to add the Dash to the Daily’s

was not connected to the fact that Wawa Inc., a gas station and convenience store chain also known for its food service, is building at The Crossings at Town Center, at Gate and Town Center parkways. First Coast Energy applied for a permit to renovate the Daily’s store at a cost of $150,000 to add a new quick-service restaurant deli-café with three touchscreen ordering kiosks, a new coffee area and other renovations. Duval County property records show the almost 5,100-square-foot building was developed in 2001. Kane, public relations and communications manager, said she was unable to share the cost of the project, “but it is a substantial investment that will allow us to bring that store up to our current Daily’s standards which are in line with what our customers’ expectations are.” kmathis@jaxdailyrecord.com @MathisKb (904) 356-2466

Just 5 minutes from Town Center!

The restaurant is Insetta’s return Downtown, where his group operated Chew for six years until it closed in 2012. The key this time is to finetune the formula that works Downtown when it comes to food, prices, efficiency and hours. For example, Bellwether’s menu will be like Black Sheep’s, but at a lower price point, he said. The 120-seat Bellwether will offer counter service and fullservice, although both will deliver the food to the table. Counter service is more conducive to busy lunch hours, while table service might be more appropriate for business lunches. There’s also a private dining area that can seat 40, as well as a new patio area for street-side dining. Hours will adapt to demand, but might start with lunch from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday and brunch from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Dinner

is envisioned but hasn’t been scheduled. Bellwether features a full bar. Happy hour could start at 4-5 p.m. and run until at least 7:30 p.m., Insetta said. Ashley Land is front-of-house manager and Kerri Rogers is the chef. There also is catering and delivery, possibly by a small customized golf cart. Bellwether will start with 20 employees Monday-Friday. “This is going to be one of the hardest things we’ve done,” Insetta said. The city approved tenant build-out for 4,700 square feet of space in July for almost $795,500. The interior is almost completed, decorated in pine and subway tile with warm tones. Sweetwater Restoration is the contractor and Design Cooperative was the architect. The bellwetherjax.com website calls Bellwether a “casual yet sophisticated restaurant” that “will offer an eclectic mix of

timeless fare for lunch and dinner.” The menu includes snacks, like arancini; soups and salads; sandwiches; burgers that include a vegetarian beet burger; and lunch entrees such as wild Georgia shrimp and grits. Insetta did not have prices determined on a sample menu Wednesday, although he said they will be less than at Black Sheep, where sandwiches run $9-14 and entrees are $13 and up. Black Sheep opens for lunch, dinner and brunch. At Orsay, open for brunch and dinner, prices are somewhat higher. Dinner entrees run $19$39. As of Wednesday afternoon, Insetta and business partner Allan DeVault were completing the details of Bellwether for its grand opening. Just not today. kmathis@jaxdailyrecord.com @Mathis Kb (904) 356-2466

A sea turtle ensnared by fishing nets was cut free by the crew of the USNS Invincible on March 29.

Crowley Maritime crew completes ‘Turtle Ops’ The Crowley Maritime Corp. crew aboard the company-managed USNS Invincible saved a distressed sea turtle March 29. It had become entangled in nets and fishing lines in offshore waters near Southwest Asia. The crew dubbed the rescue “Turtle Ops.” It was performed when the crew had no pending operations and it could be done safely. The Jacksonville-based company said it used the USNS Invincible’s bow thruster to maneuver the ship into position to bring the sea creature alongside and onboard. The Crowley crew, along with U.S. military personnel onboard, cut away the nets and fishing lines and released the turtle back into the ocean. “There’s a well-known unwritten maritime law that a sailor should always help another seafarer in need on the high seas and, for Crowley, that mentality extends to all forms of ocean life,” said Ira Douglas, the company’s director of marine personnel, in a news release. Douglas said that rescuing the turtle “gave us the opportunity to practice our man overboard drill and demonstrate outstanding character, as well as our commitment to being good stewards of the marine environment.” The USNS Invincible is part of the T-AGOS/T-AGM fleet and is operated for Military Sealift Command by Crowley’s government services group.

Florida Coastal rolls to softball national title By Max Marbut Staff Writer Florida Coastal School of Law’s softball team returned from Charlottesville, Va., the coed division champions of this past weekend’s 34th annual University of Virginia Law Softball Invitational. Fifty-one schools from across the U.S. fielded men’s and coed teams this year. The local student defeated Ohio State 20-2, Penn State 23-1 and the University of North Carolina 32-0 in the preliminary rounds. Florida Coastal then defeated Quinnipiac 23-6 and beat No. 1 seed Baltimore Law 25-10 in the quarterfinals. The tournament ended with Florida Coastal beating host UVA 16-11 in the championship. In addition, Florida Coastal’s Ashley Stafford, who smacked six softballs over the fence in the tournament, won the women’s home run derby. The event raised $25,000 from entry fees, with $20,000 going to ReadyKids, a Virginia nonprofit that provides counseling services for children; $5,000 was donated to the Public Interest Law Association to provide public-service internships for law students this summer. In eight of the past 10 years, Florida Coastal’s teams have won either the men’s or coed division. Softball is the law school’s only competitive athletic program, said spokeswoman Nicole Cassis.
