Macquarie expanding at Riverplace Tower Australia-based Macquarie Group is expanding onto another floor at Riverplace Tower on the Downtown Southbank. The financial services company opened in Jacksonville in February 2016 on the fifth floor of the Southbank high-rise and had already leased the fourth story in anticipation of growth. Now it’s moving into about half of that floor. Brasfield & Gorrie LLC is the contractor for the $850,000 project to demolish the interior of 8,500 square feet of space. The city is reviewing a permit application. The project includes demolition of all interior components including partitions, finishes, ceilings and more. Riverplace Tower is at 1301 Riverplace Blvd. A company spokesman in New York declined comment about the expansion, the number of employees in Jacksonville or plans to hire more. Jobs posted online recently for Macquarie in Jacksonville include positions in tax accounting, financial control, financial accounting, product control, regulatory reporting, compliance analyst and financial analyst. The global financial-services company started with 60 employees on the fifth floor and anticipated reaching 135 employees this year. However, the two floors can accommodate 250. “We are anticipating success,” said Glen Skarott, deputy group financial controller, as the office

He led the site search that ended in Jacksonville after the company considered 17 cities in five countries. Skarott, Macquarie executives and city and business leaders announced in July 2015 the company had chosen Jacksonville as a global banking sharedservices office. The team provides finance, accounting, tax and regulatory support and other services to Macquarie functions in the U.S. and in some European markets. Its U.S. headquarters is in New York and it has offices around the country. The United States is a large growth market. In coming to Jacksonville,
Macquarie agreed to create 123 jobs by the end of this year and pay an average wage of $64,356, in addition to benefits. Skarott said 800 applications were made for the initial Jacksonville jobs. The first 60 employees comprised 40 local hires and 20 transfers from Macquarie Group offices in London, Hong Kong, India, New York, Houston and Sydney. Jacksonville’s office was designed to comprise five teams: product control; legal entity control; regulatory reporting; tax reporting and compliance; and financial control. Macquarie initially leased about 17,500 square feet on the fifth floor at Riverplace Tower. That space is set up for 125 employees, but could fit in more,

For those first 123 jobs, the City Council approved taxpayer incentives of $393,600, comprising a Qualified Target Industry grant of up to $147,600 and a training grant up to $246,000. Macquarie also requested $1.37 million from the state, consisting of the QTI match of up to $590,400, a Quick Action Closing Fund up to $500,000 and a Quick Response Training Grant up to $282,900. Macquarie said it expects to invest $2.2 million into improving its leased space. Adding in IT, equipment and furniture boosts that to at least $3.1 million.

Since the financial dealings were disclosed in public documents, Capener said the
secrecy surrounding names and addresses shouldn’t worry taxpayers, although he does understand possible frustration. “Certainly, the perspective is the city is making multimilliondollar decisions with these companies, and therefore should be more transparent,” he added. Capener said another reason for the secrecy is deals between municipalities and businesses can fall through when details leak to the public. “It’s a disadvantage for both parties,” he said. “It gives your
Jacksonville-based CSX Corp. said its 1,000-job layoff is complete. The layoff was announced Feb. 21. On March 8, CSX said it had concluded its involuntary separation program, with about 800 management positions eliminated, including about 500 in Jacksonville across multiple locations and subsidiaries. The remaining 200 positions now are gone. Spokesman Rob Doolittle said no further actions under that layoff are anticipated. He said those whose jobs were abolished will receive severance benefits and outplacement services. “These employees made important contributions, and the company is deeply grateful for their service,” Doolittle said in an emailed statement. The layoffs came as new CEO Hunter Harrison, known as a railroad cost-cutter and a turnaround expert, took the job. When asked if Availity had applied for incentives, Molly Miles, the company’s vice president of marketing, said she couldn’t comment. Meanwhile, not much is known about Project Velocity outside of the financial details of the incentives agreement. Velocity, listed in public docu-
ments as building products manufacturer, has proposed adding another 20 positions to its Jacksonville workforce in exchange for a $2.21 million Recaptured Value grant from the city. The unnamed company would invest $54 million into its Jacksonville plant. He declined to say how much will be invested in each, “but suffice it to say the facility will be a state-of-the-art multimillion dollar facility.” His group paid almost $1.7 million in January for the two vacant sites. Bennett said his group doesn’t plan any more car washes in the Jacksonville market at this point but is looking in other states. The decision to expand in Jacksonville was because his group likes the market’s demographics, population, climate and other factors. What makes Camel different, he said, is that it offers “an exceptional time and value proposition for our car wash customers.” He said that for half the price of full-service car washes and in half the time or less, “we offer a higher quality car wash experience enabled by the high tech, state-of-the-art equipment that does the work more safely than a hand wash.” He said customers drive up, select their wash and pay at a touchscreen computer, and then proceed to the tunnel entrance. They stay in their cars and are pulled through the tunnel in a three-minute automated process that cleans and dries their cars. Customers can then access free vacuums to clean their car interiors if they want. Bennett said he can’t speak about other companies’ decisions to open express car washes in Jacksonville, but he said the industry has changed. “The express tunnel concept represents a paradigm shift in the car wash industry as new technology allows people to let machines do the work once done by hand,” he said. Camelcarwash.com shows a Marietta, Ga., car wash. It’s open 8 a.m.-7 p.m. daily and a basic wash starts at $7. Upgraded services cost more. That facility also offers free drying towels, glass cleaner and a carpet mat cleaner for customers to use, in addition to vacuums. The city is reviewing plans for the two locations. The 1.11-acre Mandarin site is designed with a 4,393-squarefoot car wash. The developer is San Jose Real Estate Holdings

Taylor & White Inc. is the engineer for both. Another newcomer appears to be Prime Car Wash, whose developer paid $1.065 million in December for Mandarin property at 11860 San Jose Boulevard to build an automated car wash with an enclosed customer waiting area at a cost of $2.2 million. Plans show an 11,016-squarefoot building. The primecarwash.com site shows full-service interior services as well as the exterior wash. Also, Zips Express Car Wash has four locations in Jacksonville, recently buying the Jacksonville-based CarbuX centers. It’s a growing business. Northeast Florida offers many full-service car washes, and some offer conveyer washes that lead customers through in their cars. It’s the entry of new companies — and new concepts by existing companies — that shows the strength of the trend. Research by the Southwest Car Wash Association showed that in 2014, the “express exterior” segment was creating growth in the tunnel systems. “Investors that have always been drawn to the industry see they can enter the business without the labor headaches and management problems of the full-serve model and still get a good ROI on this real estate based investment,” it said. Between 2008 and 2014, the percentage of car-washing consumers using exterior washes grew from 14 percent to 21 percent — the highest growth rate.
Camel Premium Express Car Wash joins Jacksonville-based Gate Petroleum Co. and Columbus, Ga.-based Goo-Goo 3 Minute Express Wash, which also are rolling out the concept. Goo-Goo plans to build at least two locations in Jacksonville, including at The Crossing at Town Center. Goo-Goo features an expresswash tunnel, in which drivers remain in their vehicle as it is washed in three minutes. Florida and South Georgia Goo-Goo franchisee Todd Buckner did not respond to a call or email Wednesday about the status of the projects. At Goo-Goo, prices range $8 to $30, which is the top fullservice. For full-service, drivers remain in their vehicles through the tunnel but park for staff to complete the process. Customers can wait inside the building and drink free coffee and bottled water and access Wi-Fi. Gate said in October it will build and operate more than 20 free-standing express tunnel Gate Express Carwashes throughout Northeast Florida. Gate Express Carwashes will feature a 125- to 145-foot tunnel system that can accommodate five to seven vehicles at a time and provide a wash in less than 4 minutes. Customers don’t have to leave their cars. Pricing starts at $5. When through the wash, a customer can pull the vehicle into a bay and use a free vacuum. While many Gate stores feature car washes, the new design is for stand-alone developments. Gate executive Hill Peyton is leading the car wash development and said when announcing it that Gate wanted to be the first in the market to do it.

and their families, Pickert saw an opportunity to make a contribution above and beyond his legal representation. “I realized there was very little support in terms of structured programs or even parent support groups,” he said. Pickert has served on the board of directors since the beginning, including three years as its president. Like most nonprofits, the organization started small, but it has grown. “Our first fundraiser was a garage sale. We made $400,” said Pickert. The foundation’s annual gala and golf outing in February at TPC Sawgrass raised more than $325,000, he said. Since 2007, HEAL has raised more than $2 million that was used to provide about 150 grants

for programs that help those in the community affected by autism. The organization donated 200 iPads for special education classrooms in Duval and Clay counties and will expand the program this year with another 100 devices and include schools in Baker County. “The iPads allow a non-verbal person to communicate. It’s amazing to watch someone who’s been non-verbal for years get a voice,” Pickert said. This summer, HEAL will provide funding for 15 sports leagues, arts camps and support groups. One of the organization’s most recent initiatives is providing trained service dogs for people with ASD. “Children with autism make a great connection with dogs,” Pickert said. “We’ve seen so many cases where it really opens
up their emotions.” The foundation’s long-range plan is to construct five specialneeds adaptive parks, one each in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties, he said. The next event on the organization’s schedule is the annual HEAL Autism Walk on Sunday at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.
