Mayor’s chief of staff resigns for job at JEA By David Cawton Staff writer The job offer Mayor Lenny Curry’s Chief of Staff Kerri Stewart said she “cannot turn down” was from JEA. Stewart sent a letter to Curry on Tuesday that she was resigning May 12 for the offer, but didn’t say what it was. On Wednesday, the community-owned utility announced Stewart will take over as chief customer officer on May 30. Stewart could not be reached immediately for comment. JEA is the eighth-largest community-owned electric utility in the United States, providing electric, sewer and water services in Northeast Florida. “Kerri’s knowledge and experience provides an excellent background to lead our cus-

Voters could increase homestead exemption News Service of Florida A potential property-tax break that is a priority of House Speaker Richard Corcoran is headed to voters. The House voted 83-35 on Tuesday to approve a proposed constitutional amendment (HJR 7105) that would expand the homestead exemption by $25,000 if approved by voters in November 2018. “If passed by the voters, this additional exemption will be one of, if not the largest, tax cut in the history of Florida at $645 million,” Corcoran, R-Land O’ Lakes, said in a prepared statement. Currently, homeowners receive a tax exemption on the first $25,000 in value of their properties. They pay taxes on

tomer experience activities,” said JEA CEO and Managing Director Paul McElroy in the announcement. Stewart’s JEA duties will include leading the Customer Experience Team, meaning Stewart she is responsible for customer experience, business development, community engagement, market solutions and more. For the past two years, Stewart has served as Curry’s chief of staff and becomes the first of his inner circle to resign. Marsha Oliver, city director of public affairs, issued a statement that Curry values Stewart’s work and wishes her “much continued success in her new role.” dcawton@jaxdailyrecord.com

the value between $25,000 and $50,000 and then receive an additional exemption on the portion from $50,000 to $75,000. Voters will be asked to apply an additional non-school exemption to the portion of values between $100,000 and $125,000. Opponents of the proposal have raised concerns that it would hurt low-income people, renters and businesses and would force local governments to decide between cutting services and raising taxes. If approved, homeowners could save more than $200 a year on their taxes, depending on local ad valorem millage rates, while local government revenue would be cut statewide by about $645 million a year.

GNC did not respond to a call or email. Kay Jewelers is shown as the tenant in Suite 100; GNC in Suite 200; and National Vision in Suite 300.
