Among the ﬁnest of the full colour plates in the popular encyclopaedia Le Larousse pour tous are the natural history illustrations of Adolphe Millot (1857–1921), naturalist and senior illustrator at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. And the island of Skomer, off the coast of Wales, is one of the most accessible areas for those wanting to photograph puffins, be they non-specialist day visitors or professionals such as the Welsh Rob Cottle, self-avowed lover of tea and hater of rain. Because puffins use their wings for underwater propulsion to depths down to 65 m (210 ft), their wings are smaller than would be ideal for ﬂight, so they need to be ﬂapped fast, around

parrot species. Originally from South and Central America, macaws were imported to Europe from the early sixteenth century. They are extremely curious birds with strong memories, and were highly prized for their ability to mimic sounds and human words. The birds’ rich personalities also made them popular as pets – and today make them challenging subjects to photograph. Before immortalizing birds in creative and original ways, internationally renowned Australian photographer Gary Heery spent years practising

his skills on celebrities, including Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Madonna. After thirty-five years in showbusiness, Heery finally felt ready to tackle birds – some of the most enigmatic sitters in the whole of the animal kingdom. For these restless subjects, whose character is expressed through their entire bodies, he constructed a translucent tent in which they felt secure and could still fly. ‘I treated it, not unlike any other portraiture situation, as a kind of controlled spontaneity,’ Heery said.

Edward Lear (1812–88) is perhaps best known today for the marvellous illustrated nonsense poems (including The Owl and the Pussycat and The Jumblies) created for young children – for whom the painfully shy and delicate Lear felt an afﬁnity – but by profession he was a highly accomplished natural history illustrator. He produced many notable and beautiful works for John Gould’s (see p.106) monumental books on ornithology, as well as animal portraits at Lord Stanley’s menagerie at Knowsley Hall near Liverpool. However, it was his

own publication, Illustrations of the Family Psittacidae or Parrots, for which he deserves greatest credit, particularly in his mastery of the new printing technique of lithography. Lear was only eighteen when he conceived the plan of producing the very ﬁrst monograph devoted to a single family of birds, and went about the task with remarkable maturity and singlemindedness. He worked directly from the living, screeching specimens at London Zoo’s Parrot House, and his birds consequently exude life and character:

this scarlet macaw (Ara macao, then known as the red and yellow macaw) is perhaps the most iconic of all parrot images. Keepers would hold the parrots while Lear studied them: an exercise probably resulting in many painful bites. Not surprisingly, Lear’s activities often attracted the attention of members of the public in the zoo and, to hide his embarrassment, he would entertain them by drawing lightning-fast caricatures – not always complimentary.

A golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) struggles to ﬂy with a broken wing in this painting by the French artist Rosa Bonheur (1822–99), unusually depicting the huge and fearsome raptor in a moment of vulnerability and defeat. In Western art, as in classical culture, the eagle is traditionally a symbol of martial triumph and pride, used by armies from the Roman legions to Napoleon’s Grande Armée and the forces of the Hapsburg empire. Here, the symbolism of the wounded bird may refer to the defeat and capture of the French ruler, Napoleon

III, at the Battle of Sedan during the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1), or possibly to the harm Prussia (again, symbolized by an eagle) had caused itself by beginning the conﬂict. Bonheur made her name painting highly accurate images of animals at a time when such paintings were considered less important than portraiture or history painting, but her originality was widely recognized. She exhibited many times at the prestigious Paris Salon and was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1865. With a wingspan measuring up

to 2.2 m (7 ft), the golden eagle is one of the largest birds living on the French Alps and one of the most powerful fliers of all raptors as it hunts other birds, reptiles and mammals. Bonheur’s representation defies the convention of the triumphantly confident, masculine bird – a symbolic attack on patriarchy by a trailblazing female artist who lived her homosexuality with pride at a time when few dared.

In 2019, 825 people did so, submitting 2,718 photos from 49 colonies. From dark blues to bright reds, the remarkable colours of the wing of a dead European roller (Coracias garrulus) are displayed in this remarkable study by the renowned German artist Albrecht Dürer (1471– 1528), a major ﬁgure of the Northern Renaissance who excelled as a landscape painter and printmaker, but who also frequently made detailed studies of wildlife and plants. Here, the structure and texture of each feather are faithfully portrayed, as is the rainbow plumage of the crow-like bird, which was

to the indiscriminate use of DDT for agricultural purposes. While not necessarily deadly to the birds, the insecticide interfered with their metabolization of calcium. This led to them laying brittle eggs that would break under the weight of a brooding adult. In 1983, gallerists and environmental activists Ronald and Frayda Feldman commissioned the renowned Pop artist Warhol to produce a series of screenprints to raise public awareness on the urgency of wildlife conservation. The result, Endangered Species, is a set

of ten screenprints immortalizing near-extinct animals – including Grevy’s zebra, the African elephant, the giant panda – just as Warhol had done for some years with his famed rock stars and actors. Today the bald eagle’s numbers have risen to the point that the bird is no longer endangered and it is a widely acknowledged success story for the conservation movement – like another of Warhol’s species, the Pine Barrens tree frog. The bald eagle remains protected in the United States under multiple federal laws and regulations.

The Italian Renaissance saw the medicinal simples gardens of the monasteries evolve into physic gardens, these were attached to centres of learning and were the forerunners of today’s botanic gardens. The gardens of Pisa and Padua were the first to be founded for the academic study of medicinal plants, Universities across Europe were quick to follow and gardens such as Leiden and Oxford were founded. They were still using the ancient texts, including those of Theophrastus and Dioscorides, while at the same time new plants were being brought into Europe from other continents, Africa and the Americas, these were plants which people were not sure how to use, whether they were medicinal or culinary. The rich trading ports of Venice and the Amalfi coast brought not only spices and treasures into Italy but also these exotic and unknown plants. New classifications and investigations were needed to understand how the plants could be utilized. Some of these new and exotic finds were going into the hands of private collectors, the Renaissance Humanist garden makers inspired by classical literature, such as Homer (who mentions hundreds of different plants) and the gardens described in the letters of Pliny

he Jardin des Plantes is laid out as a stunning formal axial garden, in the French manner. It is full of surprises, including a labyrinth, a zoo, museums and stunning Art Deco glasshouses. Located on the left bank of the Seine, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, it covers 28 hectares (69.1 acres) and contains around 10,000 species and varieties of plants, 2,000 trees, and 2,500 shrubs: its grounds have 80,000 seasonal plants, and burst with colour. A botanical haven located in the centre of Frankfurt, it houses plants from all over the world as a source of education and an oasis of calm within the city. History The idea for the Jardin des Plantes originated with King Louis XIII, who instructed his physician Jean Hérouard to create a medicinal garden for him. Hérouard had seen the first-ever botanic garden in France, opened in the southern city of Montpellier on the orders of Henri IV in 1593. It was attached to a medical school, taught medicinal plant knowledge, and became the prototype for all subsequent French botanic gardens. Hérouard wanted to create something

It moved twice before being set up on the present site. What we know as the Palmengarten was originally established after the 1866 Austro-Prussian War, when Duke Adolphe of Nassau was exiled from his estate at Wiesbaden-Biebrich, west of Frankfurt. This prompted him to sell his exotic and tropical plant collection, with its extensive greenhouses and worldfamous conservatories. Garden designer and botanist Heinrich Siesmayer (1817– 1900) was commissioned by the Duke to liquidate the collection, but Siesmayer could not resist the opportunity of creating a garden himself. He wanted to make a ‘Winter Garden’ like those popular

in Britain at the time – a glasshouse filled with foreign plants, suitable for concerts, dancing and taking tea. In May 1868 a committee was formed to help fund the Biebricher Wintergärten, and when shares were issued, they proved so popular that the committee was able to buy the Duke’s valuable plant collection. The City of Frankfurt gave about 7 hectares (18 acres) of land to them, and, under Siesmayer’s supervision, the glasshouses were erected by 1869, and hosted their first flower show in 1870. The ‘Palm Garden’ is now one of the largest of its kind in Europe, and still functions in the ‘Winter Garden’ tradition, holding concerts and functions. Siesmayer was director from 1868 to 1886, and was succeeded by August Siebert (1854–1923), a great horticultural and botanical expert. Siebert was to expand and improve the site over his forty years in charge, building new greenhouses and installing electricity. He was also responsible for the first published companion to the Palmengarten, which appeared in 1895.

he Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew are thought to be the largest botanical gardens in the world, a 121-hectare (300-acre) site on the edge of London, home to the world’s biggest collection of living plants and more than 8.5 million preserved plant and fungal specimens. It is a setting rich in history that spans from royal follies to colonial exploitation and wartime bombing. Kew states its mission is to ‘protect plants and fungi for the future of all life on Earth’, and to investigate the plant world for new sources of food, medicine, fuel and materials. Kew continues to help us understand the wonders of nature and to question how we care for it in a world where climate is now dangerously being ignored. Installations like The Hive whirring away in the middle of a wildflower meadow, recreating life inside a beehive, remind us of the challenges bees face to survive and the landscape they and we need to thrive. Designed by artist Wolfgang Buttress, it features a thousand LEDs lighting up according to the vibrations of bees, and creates a musical symphony in the key of C – the same key as bees buzz in!

The History Grade I-listed Kew Palace, the smallest of all the British royal palaces, was originally built for a silk merchant in 1631. In the 1720s George II and Queen Caroline arrived with their three eldest daughters, to use Kew and nearby Richmond Lodge as weekend retreats, enjoying some privacy away from Court life. to England aged 17 for her arranged marriage to Frederick, Prince of Wales, that was to change the landscape. Frederick took a lease on the Kew estate, and both he and Augusta became involved with reshaping it. Frederick began a collection of exotic plants, and after his sudden death in 1751, the now Dowager Princess of Wales Augusta created a 3.6-hectare (9-acre) botanical garden just south of the Orangery. By 1768, it contained 2,700 species, and botanist and gardener Thomas Knowlton said that the Princess’s gardens had one of the best collections in the kingdom, if not the world. As a reminder of Augusta’s garden, an area of Kew is reserved for a collection planted out in strict Linnaean order and with each plant labelled. The Princess of Wales Conservatory is also named for her.

Augusta commissioned various buildings and follies from architect Sir William Chambers, including the Pagoda, the Orangery and the Ruined Arch (all survive), and the Great Stove, the Temple of the Sun and the Mosque (not extant). A recent restoration of the Ruined Arch revealed that it contains pieces of Greek and Roman sculpture. George III, who reigned from 1760, inherited both the Richmond and Kew

Undoubtedly the Gardens’ unluckiest (or perhaps luckiest?) tree is a Pinus nigra, which has twice been hit by lightning as well as by a small, low-flying aircraft that crashed in 1928 (a second aircraft crash-landed in the Gardens ten years later). Other catastrophes included the burning down of the tea pavilion by Suffragettes in 1913, and thirty hits by Second World War bombs. The Gardens once had their own fire brigade and still have their own police force, one of the smallest in the world.

to new lands, the King commissioned a joint Royal Navy/Royal Society scientific expedition to the South Pacific Ocean. Lieutenant James Cook was to command HMS Endeavour, and Banks was to join the team of botanical explorers on board. During the voyage (1768–1771), the botanists collected over 1,000 species of plants new to science, and the seeds were sent to Kew. On Banks’ return to England in July 1771, he became Kew’s first unofficial director. Under his guidance, it became a central hub collecting seeds and specimens, and he built an international exchange of resources making it one of the pre-eminent botanical gardens in the world. Banks was also behind the practice of sending out plant hunters/ collectors, including Francis Masson, a Scottish gardener and Kew Gardens’ first official plant hunter – who, in 1772, visited what is now called the Floral Region in South Africa, and returned with thousands of plants. r oya l b ota n i c g a r d e n s , k e w

INGA BUIVIDAVICE ist eine in Liverpool lebende Grafikkünstlerin und Autorin, die ursprünglich aus Litauen stammt.
