The Complete Guide on Foam boards

Foam board is a sturdy lightweight material that easily cuts with a sharp knife. There is a common problem that people encounter while cutting foam board known as the “snow plow effect. If you are using a blunt knife or your angle is incorrect, the internal foam board layer can bunch up causing an unsightly edge, thereby making it more difficult to cut. If you check for the sharpness of the knife, look at the flat surface instead of its tip. Smooth cutting can be easily achieved when you present the flat surface on the board. Try having a shallow angle rather than a steep one. If you want to cut perfect curves, then opt for a tool specifically designed for foam board.

How to use foam board This lightweight material that is made of rigid plastic foam is often used for presentations and craft projects. It is also used as backing for artwork and for other retail applications. The best property of foam board is that it is easy to cut and mark. It is fun to cut, glue, draw, and write on a foam board depending on the requirement and use. There are certain techniques that artists use, as well as recommend, while working with foam board.

Things you will need Utility knife, pencil, ruler, marker, glue, paint, and painter’s tape

How to cut foam board

Measure your requirement and mark it accordingly using a pencil. Don’t use a pen or marker because they can smear the ink and they won’t dry immediately on the surface. Insert a fresh blade on the knife before you start the cutting process. The cutting may be haphazard if the edges of the knife are not sharp enough. Place a ruler along the marked area and cut the edges with the help of a knife. Move the knife down directly and angle the blade slightly at 45 degrees while you cut, in order to prevent the bunching of the board. Immediately change the knife if the foam board edges start to fray.

How to mark on Foam board

Quick dry markers are recommended if you aren’t comfortable with a pencil. Avoid using an eraser once you have marked it as it leaves stains behind. If you are marking with any ink, make sure it dries completely or else it will smear, transforming your board into a mess.

How to glue foam board

Any type of craft glue can be used as a foam board adhesive. As the surface material is paper based, this type of glue is made for paperwork, and it will easily work on the foam board. Press the pieces firmly together once gluing is over and wipe away excess glue, if any. Set aside to dry.
