’ He Came Down Not too long ago, I saw an amazing TV news report. It would probably fall under the category of “human interest” story, except that it was so much more than that. It was so incredibly beautiful, that I sat right up in my chair and called for my wife and daughter to come watch the replay of it. The incident took place in Buffalo, New York, where a bus driver named Darnell Barton was transporting a group of high schoolers on the Scajaquada Expressway overpass. But as he drove along, he noticed something wrong, something out of place. A young woman was on the wrong side of the guard rail, facing away from the bridge, as if she were about to jump. A surveillance camera inside the bus itself caught all that happened next. Barton stopped his bus and opened the swooshing door. He then called out to the woman, asking if she was ok. She gave no response, and didn’t even look back. He called out some more, but still received no response. Finally, he got out of the bus and walked down those three steps, out onto the overpass sidewalk. As she looked back at him, he lunged for her and hooked his arm around her waist saying, “Do you want to come on this side of the guard rail now?” All she said was, “Yeah.” The surveillance camera was still recording as he helped her safely over the rail and she, a slight young lady, slumped down to the curb. Then Barton did a wonderful thing. Big, football-lineman-sized Barton sat down next to her, put his arm around her shoulder, and stayed with her that way until the police and firefighters arrived. As you read this, the season of Advent is beginning – a time of expecting and waiting for the way that Jesus was born among us. I do so love to get into the spirit of this season, filled as it is with sentiment and faith, with anxiety and cheer, with journeys to overcrowded stores, and journeys to quiet moments in the darkened early winter. I anticipate embracing all of December’s contradictions, and I find them more and more poignant with each passing year. For people of faith, we revisit wonderful Old Testament prophecies about how God comes down to us – how God will act with justice in a world of strife. And we revisit New Testament accounts of how God in Jesus comes down to us, bringing peace on earth and goodwill. This is the time when we tell each other again of how God comes down to us. Doesn’t just stop by the side of the road; doesn’t just call out to us; doesn’t even just reach out to us…but pulls us in close, and sits with us, arm around our shoulder, reassuring us how “love came down at Christmas – love, a lovely love divine – love was born at Christmas -- star and angels gave the sign.” (That’s from an 1885 poem by Christina Rosetti.) Make sure you find ways to worship through Advent and into Christmas so the wonder of God’s incarnation becomes real to you all over again. By the way, Darnell Barton got back on his bus to resume the journey, with all his high school students patiently waiting for him. They had witnessed the extraordinary kindness he had shown, and they broke out in applause for their bus driver. He shyly dropped his head and tried to wave them off, not really comfortable with such recognition. It was a lovely interruption that he gave to that young woman – a lovely disturbing and disrupting of her plans. May God intervene for you and for us all with peace and joy. Merry Advent, and a Holy Christmas too!
~ Pastor Josh Nelson

We will hear from the prophet Isaiah and the Gospel writer, Matthew. On Dec. 8, our special guest preacher will be Pastor Jerry Wahl, Assistant to the Bishop for the Minneapolis Area Synod. Pr Jerry is also a former interim pastor of Family of Christ (2010-2011.) On the first, we will light the first candle in the Advent wreath, and our worship theme is “The Wonder of God’s Promise.” Luther Seminary has compiled a booklet of daily Advent devotions & there’s a link to it on our website ( familyofchristonline.com ). There are additional free Advent resources available for children & adults at our Welcome Center.

FoC Picture Directory A reminder: This is a directory of PARTICIPANTS, not membership. Because Family of Christ is a place of welcome and hospitality, many children, adults, and families take part in church life without official membership – though we invite and encourage that additional important step of commitment and participation. This directory is therefore to be used only for church-related or friendship purposes, NOT for personal or commercial business use. Any such use of this information violates that trust we each place in Family of Christ and goes against the express wishes of the church council. Please inform the pastors if you believe someone has made inappropriate use of this directory.
