’ September Notes About Worship & Music As we get ready to set up a new fall schedule, I want to make sure I communicate some of the changes in worship & in music that you’ll notice starting in September! THE BOOK OF ACTS – OUR SEPTEMBER THEME The interesting book of Acts gives a fascinating picture of what the early church was like and how it faced its challenges. How are those accounts instructive for our church today as we face modern challenges? Let’s all join together in reading Acts in September – a congregation-wide Bible reading challenge. If it is Sept. 1, then read Acts 1. On the 2nd, read the second chapter. On the third, take time to read Acts 3, etc. (There are 28 chapters, so with the two extra days in September, you get to play catch up if you need to.) Furthermore, for a really fun way of doing this, go to our website each day and click on the link to hear that day’s chapter read by one of our church members (maybe a child, a youth, or an adult). Thanks to Marilyn Syverson for helping that piece of social media get set up. Pastors Kristie and Josh will preach on four of the passages from Acts as we think together about “Courageous Christianity”: Sept. 8: “Caring Community” from Acts 2:40-47 Sept. 15: “Clearly Communicate” from Acts 14:8-18 Sept. 22: “Christ at the Center” from Acts 17:16-31 Sept. 29: “Convincing Convictions” from Acts 28:23-31 THREE NEW MUSIC GROUPS Last May, some of the leaders involved in music had interesting ideas to share, and out of those conversations we came up with a few adjustments in how we’re scheduling music for this new school year. We want to provide a little more blended opportunity at the 9:15 hour and a more consistent contemporary style at 10:45. We also want to involve high-schoolers in our music ministry and give a group of bell-ringers the opportunity to play. With all that in mind, we have invited Andrea Jeitz to come back to us, providing leadership for a new adult group that will lead one 10:45 worship service per month. Jessica Gensmer will add to her tasks by launching a new high school music group called “EPIC!” which also will play, typically, for one 10:45 service per month. That allows Family of Christ Singers to sing twice a month, but only for one service at a time — 9:15. Also at those 9:15 services we’ll include a new bell choir and our wonderful chamber musicians. Talk with Jessica or either pastor to learn more details about these changes, including the various times of rehearsal (which are also listed on pages 12-13). Listed below is the basic pattern of how we’ll structure our worship and when each of the various groups will participate. Let’s all see each other in church as we gear up for a fun and active fall of ministry together. Our worship pattern will look like this: 8:00 AM 9:15 AM 10:45 AM_____ st 1 Sun. Jessica Gensmer Praise For Him w/ Jessica PFH w/Jessica 2nd Sun. Mary Renz FoC Singers w/ Ron Larson & Mary Exsoultation w/ Andrea Jeitz 3rd Sun. Jessica River of Joy w/ Jessica ROJ w/ Jessica th 4 Sun. Mary FoC Singers w/ Ron & Mary EPIC! w/ Jessica (Lux Aeterna, Praise Unlimited, Chamber Players, and the new bell choir will be worked into this schedule throughout the year.)

& Classes Bible Dive — A Sunday School Class for Adults Sundays, 9:15-10:15 AM • Beginning September 8 Join a group discussion that will dive deeper into the Bible texts used in weekly worship. This text study will be facilitated by Randy Ruckdashel. Bring your Bible, grab a doughnut and coffee, then be ready to share some insights and reflections on the texts that are being read and preached in our worship times together. All are welcome at any time. Bible Dive will meet throughout the school year in the conference room.

Revelations About Revelation Mondays, Sept. 23-Oct. 28 (except Oct. 7) • 7:00-9:00 PM Have you ever scratched your head over the intriguing but confusing Book of Revelation? Wouldn’t it be nice to take a class about it that’s taught by a seminary professor? Here’s that opportunity! FoC is hosting a Luther Seminary Lay School Bible Study via remote web access. Sessions are live, so we are able to submit our questions. Entitled “Revelation, Faith and the End,” the course is led by Eric Barreto, Assistant Professor of New Testament at Luther. Here is the professor’s description of the class: Revelation is a difficult book to read. With powerful and often disturbing images, John leads us into a world of comfort and hope in the midst of persecution—but also fear and trepidation as the very foundations of the world are shaken. Making matters even more difficult are the various ways Christians have read this book. Is Revelation a precise sketch of the last days, a word of relief to early Christians no longer relevant to us, or something in between? For far too long, many Christians have avoided this last book of the Bible, but we shouldn't. In Revelation, we learn that God is ever faithful and that God's love knows no end.

Eric Barreto

Join us on Monday evenings this fall for a great class, facilitated by Randy Ruckdashel. Though there is no set cost for us, we will receive a freewill offering to defray the cost of registering, course materials, and attending the session.

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. ~ Mahatma Gandhi 4

Manna & Mercy! God Gives Freedom and Faith, for Life Wednesdays, beginning September 25 • 6:00-7:30 PM Manna and Mercy is a hand-printed paraphrase of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation -- a graphic novel of sorts, written with imagination, clarity, humor, and cartoons. Built around the twin themes of food sharing and forgiveness, it helps us look at scripture with new eyes and rediscover how it can become a means of life and grace. What a perfect opportunity to dig deeper into the Bible and get a fresh understanding of God’s Word to us while engaging in insightful conversation with others from Family of Christ. Open to all, this course is scheduled on Wednesday evenings to make it easy for parents with children in Christos and/or confirmation to attend. Sessions are led by Pastor Kristie and Randy Ruckdashel. Course books are available in the church office for $10. Watch for registration info in future editions of Tabletalk and Family News, as well as at www.familyofchristonline.com.

Next rehearsal: September 3 ROJ (River of Joy) A music group for adults (16 or older) that leads worship in church for the 9:15 and 10:45 services on the third Sunday of the month. We practice the Tuesday night (7:00 PM) and the Saturday morning (9:00 AM) before we perform.
