T
his has got to be my favorite time of the year. Spring is here! That means bright colors, new life, and of course, Easter. This year was Cooper's first Easter Egg Hunt! It was so exciting and, of course, I found the frilliest Easter dress that I could at Berry Patch Kids! The best part of this time of year is the realization of how lucky we are to live in Florida. I was just in New York and everyone is still wearing winter coats and boots. It's still cold outside, but when you go indoors, it is a sauna. It's a wonder the whole town isn't sick! The most disconcerting part of an otherwise wonderful trip was the rediscovery of a phenomenon that I had forgotten exists in New York…no free refills! I guess that's a “southern thang!” What I really love about this time of year is what the Easter Season represents. New life, starting over, a second chance. And in that theme, be sure to check out the Spotlight Interview with Mr. Jim Redman and learn his story of a second chance. Certainly, living with cancer has been no easy feat, but he has kept his spirits high and refuses to be a victim. Another way to start over is to get a new look, a makeover if you will. If you want to discover a new you for spring, make sure to read the announcement of our May makeovers, and enter yourself or someone you love right away! All of the rules and regulations are in the announcement! Also, in our feature we have highlighted couples that have started over and over for over 50 years. What an accomplishment to stay committed to a relationship and a promise for such an amount of time. It is truly a tribute to the people and a tribute to the wonderful little town we live in and it's values. Flipping through the local section should peak your interest. We have made strides to bring to our readers the true color of Plant City. There is even more exciting news! Focus would like to invite the community to join us in welcoming back our release party mixers! If th you enjoyed them, they're back! Our first one will be on April 19 at the Ramada Inn Plantation House's Red Rose Dining Room, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Join us for refreshments in that wonderful Red Rose atmosphere. Hope to see you there! By the time you read this issue, Easter will have passed, but I hope you spent it with family and friends. Until next issue, happy reading!

Spring Fling Fundraiser for Spring DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER FOR WOMEN NEEDS YOUR HELP story by: GINNY STEWART photos by: SUMMER ANDERSON gstewart@floydpublications.com
If you’re like me, you have never heard of The Spring. I had no idea that there was a place like this in Plant City. The Spring is a spousal abuse shelter for women. They offer help with employment, education and child care for women who are victims of domestic violence. And, yes, we do have domestic violence issues in Plant City – I know that might be shocking, but unfortunately this horrific crime is everywhere – even in our nearly perfect little town. Aside from educational and employment help, The Spring does a thousand presentations a month. They have support groups for children and adults. They also sponsor a Parents as Partners Program. This program tries to stabilize families that are still together. The goal is to help them function better, and this is the only program that they have full funding for! Saturday, March 20, 2004, Grandpa Johnson’s Barbeque hosted the East Hillsborough Friends of the Spring’s annual Spring Western Fling Fundraiser. Apparently, a federal grant (the STOP grant) was lost and The Spring doesn’t have enough money to run the Plant City center – which serves all of East Hillsborough. They are in desperate need of monetary donations. In addition, cell phone donations can be helpful as they can be given to the victims to use in case of emergencies. You can drop your old cell phones off at the outreach center, which is located near the new Post Office. In an effort to raise money for their program, they are also leasing office spaces in their building which is relatively new and centrally located in Plant City. The Western Spring Fling was quite a sight! Steve Otto, columnist for the Tampa Tribune, was there cooking up his famous chili. He has been very generous to The Spring by raising awareness. The Tampa Tribune was also generous- they donated $6,000 in advertising for the Western Spring Fling. Everyone in attendance donated $50 a ticket, to eat, listen to live music by Danny Richard (A One Man Show) and watch Boots and Roses, a line dance exhibition team. Johnny Byrd purchased 5 tickets, Rick Lott purchased 12. Marsha Passmore and Rich Glorioso also purchased an undisclosed number of tickets. It’s apparent that politically, The Spring is a great place to dedicate your support. Officer Scott of the Plant City Police Department offered her support and presence at the Western Spring Fling. Mary Deary-Weiss, the president of East Hillsborough Friends of the Spring, along with Stanley and Susan Kolker, arranged the event. They were lucky enough to team up with Fred Johnson, who allowed most of the ticket proceeds to go straight to The Spring! Domestic violence is like a cancer that not only erodes a woman’s self esteem, but destroys entire families. No one is safe from this epidemic. In fact, I would venture to say that all of us know at least one person who has been a victim of some sort of violence. Now, there is something you can do to help. Donate money, clothes, baby items or anything else you can think of, to The Spring (call for drop off locations and times 759-0000), and make a difference!

A Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down…” You all know the song made popular by Julie Andrews in the musical, Mary Poppins. The term is used loosely here to describe the goals of Jaclyn Frey, to become a premier cake decorator and a neo-natal nurse. Jaclyn is 19 years old and has a hobby. That hobby is decorating cakes. Not just decorating them, but transforming them into works of art. “I can’t really draw or anything like that, so this is my art, this is my form of expression,” said Jaclyn. She practices her craft with her aunt Joann Lima, who helped her decorate her first cake. It was a small wedding cake with gum paste flowers. “I was so excited. I worked very hard on it and thought it was cute,” Jaclyn said. Once she realized how much she enjoyed cake
A LOCAL COLLEGE STUDENT DISPLAYS ART AND “SMART” TO OBTAIN GOALS decorating, she began taking classes and started entering her masterpieces in the Strawberry Festival. This year she entered 5 cakes. Each one received first place and the shell wedding cake, perfect for a beach wedding, won Grand Champion. “I couldn’t believe it,” Jaclyn said. The “shells” are made out of molded white chocolate and are shaded with food coloring dust to give the illusion that they are real. Jaclyn does hope that one day she will open her own cake shop. But for now, she has a more immediate goal. Jaclyn is attending HCC to become a neo-natal nurse. To get her ready for this, no doubt, high stress job; Jaclyn is spending her spare time volunteering at the South Florida Baptist Hospital in the emergency room.

“I love it, there is always so much going on,” she said. She isn’t able to get too hands on, but she loves to help people. She told the story of a little girl that had to get an IV and she was crying. Jaclyn sat with her and helped her through the experience. It seems that Jaclyn has found her purpose early on in life. She described it best when she explained why she loved to decorate cakes and why she wanted to take care of very sick babies. “I love to see the excitement in people’s eyes when they see their cake, and I would be thankful to know that I have helped someone else.”

When It “Reins” It Pours CLINT MALONE, REINED COW HORSE CHAMPION
story & photo by: KRYSTEENA WAKEFIELD kwakefield@floydpublications.com
On the outskirts of town lives a real live cowboy and his name is Clint Malone. A young man with a real man’s handshake and all the manners you’d come to expect from a southern gentleman, Clint’s a pretty modest fella’ for a world champion. Clint and his horse Holdens Carrie Cody, a.k.a. Dark, traveled the country over the past year competing in Reined Cow Horse Competitions and coming out on top. Clint met Dark when his family purchased the horse from Tonya and Wayne Griffin of Horseshoe Farms. Since then he has trained with her daily for the difficult competitions. Each day, Clint and Dark practice patterns, including spins and sliding stops. It’s training for both the horse and rider. Clint also trained Dark for boxing, an event in which the horse must keep a cow in its position in the ring. Training for competition is no easy task. Clint’s dad helps with the job, as do other trainers, including Jack Henning of Zolfo Springs, Florida, who has nearly eighty world championships to his name. This tenth grade Plant City High School student is no stranger to the world of horseback riding. “I’ve been riding since I could walk,” says Malone. At the age of six, Clint started riding competitively with barrel racing. At the age of thirteen he discovered the art of being a reined cow horse rider and never looked back. Clint and Dark made the long trip to Stevensville, Texas recently for the National Reined Cow Horse Championship Competition. Although Dark didn’t like the cold weather, the pair came home with both the national and the world title. Clint was awarded two bronze sculpted trophies, a seven hundred and fifty dollar scholarship and a beautifully embroidered saddle. This was Dark’s last competition and she most definitely went out with a bang. The Malones plan to breed the mare with another world champion, Dun It Big. Although Dark is retired, Clint is nowhere near finished with competitive riding. This modern day cowboy has many more championships to win. FOCUS PLANT CITY EDITION MARCH 15 - APRIL • 2004 PG 12
Character Building with LEW STERRETT HIS “SERMON ON THE MOUNT” PROGRAM COMES TO PLANT CITY story & photo by: SHERRI ROBINSON srobinson@floydpublications.com
Instilling good character in our children can be a tough job for parents these days, when we work long hours and have so many distractions when we get home. There is one man who understands that and has hope for us. Lew Sterrett has found a way to get everyone's attention and teach not just kids valuable principles, but help us big people figure out ways to communicate with our kids better. He has developed a program called "Sermon on the Mount" and brought it to Plant City on March 12th & 13th at the Ellis Arena. The purpose of the program is to "help people understand how healthy relationships develop and how they can experience harmony and success in their own lives." Mr. Sterrett "uses biblical principles to demonstrate loving, successful horse and trainer interaction." It was fascinating to watch him work with horses who were totally untrained, and teach them to follow his lead. His communication skills were amazing. Mr. Sterrett has quite a list of accomplishments and certificates to his name, from being President of Certified Horsemanship Association, to licensed pastor and certified youth, marriage and family counselor. The Sermon on the Mount is part of a much bigger outreach, Miracle Mountain Ranch in Pennsylvania, where kids can attend camp and gain valuable life information, as well as management and leadership skills. The Sermon on the Mount experience here in Plant City was a great time of food, fun, and fellowship. Thank you to all the local supporters of this event, especially Covenant Bible Church and Church On The Rock, for their hard work and donations of food. The Red Hat Society A RED AND PURPLE PHENOMENOM THAT’S SPREADING FAST story & phot by: LINDA FLOYD linda@floydpublications.com
I had the good fortune of being invited recently to the Spring Fashion Show & Luncheon, put on by the Prime Time Silver Belles of Ruskin. What are Prime Time Silver Belles, you ask? They are a chapter in the avalanching phenomena known as The Red Hat Society. It was started by a woman who was influenced by the poem “Warning”, by Jenny Joseph. She had bought a red hat at a bargain store one day, & when she read the poem, she framed it and hung her red hat beside it, on her wall. Then she began to give the combination to her friends as gifts, and they were soon calling themselves The Red Hat Society. So, they got dressed up in their Regalia and went to lunch. This, from their website, puts it best,” Welcome to the place where there is fun after fifty (and before) for women of all walks of life. We
believe silliness is the comedy relief of life and, since we are all in it together, we might as well join redgloved hands and go for the gusto together.
Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.” Physicians are prescribing the Red Hat Society to patients to improve their physical and mental health; university staff and graduate students are exploring the impact of the RHS on society; an award-winning Canadian documentary poignantly connects the aging process and the health benefits of RHS membership; and later this year, Penn State University will embark on a study that explores the positive health connection between the RHS and the aging process. And you thought it was just a goofy style of dress? With names like the Brandon Broads, Sunset Sisters, Red Berry Roadies, Vivacious Vixens, Naughty Nanas and the Red Hat Mamas, how could they do anything but have fun! I’m thinking of joining!

Cork Academy opened its doors to the community of Cork in 1876. Back then, it was a Strawberry School, which meant that it catered to the children of farmers. Instead of a summer break, their “summer vacation” was during the harvesting season. We know it today as Cork Elementary, and it is still the only existing elementary school in the Cork area. The community decided to celebrate the Cork Elementary’s 125th year of excellent education with a Fun Day. Carol Plunk, a first grade teacher, and a former student of Cork was there to lend a hand. “This is truly a community event. We couldn’t do it without the help of our PTA and parent volunteers,” she said. But she also noted that is was not just PTA and parents; there were teachers, custodians, and lunchroom staff on hand to help out, wherever they could. The Fun Day was open to all of Plant City and provided a host of activities to choose from. There were moon walks, game booths, gift baskets, cotton candy, and hot dogs. There were also community volunteers such as the FOCUS PLANT CITY EDITION MARCH 15 - APRIL • 2004 PG 20
CORK ELEMENTARY COMMEMORATES BIRTHDAY WITH A COMMUNITY FUN DAY
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office that landed in grand style in a helicopter, and the Hillsborough County Fire Department showed the children just how loud their sirens can be. Cork Elementary’s Principal Susan Raburn was very excited about the turnout for the event. The fun day was a fund raiser, but she stressed that was not the primary reason for its inception. “We are all about family here. It is important for us to give back to the community and that is what we are doing here. It’s a great way to spend the day with your kids,” she said. The money raised from the fun day will go into the PTA fund to provide and repair play ground equipment, computer software, new books for the media center, or whatever is needed for the children to obtain a better education. It’s pretty amazing to think that Cork started out as a pioneer school in a town full of Indians and very few settlers. It has now blossomed into the thriving institution of quality education that serves the community today. FOCUS PLANT CITY EDITION MARCH 15 - APRIL • 2004 PG 21

Spring for Education FASHION SHOW HELD TO SUPPORT LOCAL SCHOOLS story & photo by: KELLI THARRINGTON ktharrington@floydpublications.com
The Plant City Chapter of Federated Republican Women (FRW) holds a special place in their heart for education, especially in Plant City schools. A fashion show was held in the spirit of charity and education at the home of Rick and Di Lott. “They donated their home out of generosity and their belief in education. It is not related to the republican party in any way!” said Sheryl Boggs of the FRW. The proceeds of the fashion show will help supply books in the media centers of local schools. The check is presented to the Principal and Media Specialist at the chosen school at the fashion show, and the media specialist is able to choose the books that are most needed. The school that is sponsored is dependant upon the amount of
money raised and the intensity of need of an individual school. The “fashion models” are representatives of the community. Mrs. Sandy Black, Principal of Springhead Elementary was thrilled to be the
present recipient of the “Spring For Education” award. “The money will be used to enhance our library for the children and it means so much that we can now offer them more and that people care about our kids,” said Mrs. Black. The Mayor, Bill Dodson and his wife also participated as models in the event. “It’s important to support education and more importantly to support education right here in our community. We are glad to be a part of such a special event,” said the Mayor. Sheryl Boggs said that the goal of the FRW is to sponsor every school in Plant City. “Our teachers are all appreciated and we want them to know that we recognize their hard work, we know the check’s not large, but we are glad to help.”

Plany City Lion’s Club Celebrates Their 75th Anniversary CLUB IS CREDITED FOR STARTING STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL story by: BRIAN WEST
75 years ago, the North Lakeland Lions Club wanted to sponsor a Lions Club for Plant City. It took 2 attempts before Plant City came around and recognized the opportunity that lay before them. The Plant City Lions Club was chartered on April 4, 1929. Saturday evening, April 3, 2004, the Plant City Lions Club celebrated 75 years of service to Lionism and to the surrounding community. The event was held at the Florida Studies building on the campus of Hillsborough Community College. The guests who attended included current members from the North Lakeland Lions Club, Plant City Mayor and fellow Lion, Bill Dodson, and Kaitlan Sharer, the 2004 Strawberry Festival Queen and her court. One of the highlights of the evening was a proclamation from the city by Lion Dodson, presented to Plant City Lions Club President, Lee Williams, recognizing the contributions of the club and our 75 years of service. The guest speaker for the evening was Past International President, Lion Jim Ervin of the Albany Lions Club in Albany, Georgia. Mr. Ervin began by
recognizing several members of the Plant City Lions Club with Certificates of Appreciation for Innovative Achievements in Lions Leadership and Service. Lions Doug Gibbs, Bob Fulks, Judy Barta, Ron Baker, and Jim Redman, all received the honor. Lion Ervin then spoke about the accomplishments and major milestones of the Lions organization around the world. In the end the message was clear, the Lions organization would not have been so successful and certainly will not continue to be successful without vision and focus, something the Plant City Lions Club has had from the beginning. As the evening was coming to a close, Lion Jim Redman asked for the floor to point out that the Plant City Lions Club is given complete credit for starting what has become the Florida Strawberry Festival and
that one of our current members, Lion J. Myrle Henry, is credited with the idea of live musical entertainment at the Festival. Lion Henry had the idea years ago to bring Dale Evans to the festival for live entertainment. It became such a success the festivals and fairs around the country began doing the same thing. 75 years of service for any organization is a milestone. With vision and focus, maybe we’ll be around for another 75 years.

Plant City Developer Builds New Equestrian Community EQUESTRIAN FUN DAY DRAWS HUNDREDS story by: SHERRI ROBINSON srobinson@floydpublications.com
An open house at Alafia Ridge Estates took place on Sunday, March 28th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., to introduce the new Equestrian Community. Matt Yarbrough, the developer, has contracted with Central Florida Custom Homes, Inc. to be the preferred builder for this project. This company is family owned and operated by Jimmy & Annie Carapezza and family. They love building, not only places like Alafia Ridge, but homes for Plant City, where they currently reside. They are excited about the Alafia Ridge Estates project. It will be a fabulous community of 21 homes on 142 acres of the most beautiful property you could ever ask for. It is located on the corner of 39 and Keysville Road, in Lithia. Though it is country living, it is still convenient to the Plant City area, as well as only 25 minutes to Tampa, and 45 minutes to Orlando. Who wouldn't love that? Central Florida Custom Homes is the best at what they do, and they do it all. Their motto is, "One Call Does It All – Design, Build, Renovations, Additions, Custom Pools... from homes, to commercial buildings, to equestrian ranches." I had the opportunity to take a tour of the grounds in a horse driven buggy on Sunday. It was breathtaking, not to mention peaceful. After living in the city with all the traffic and hecticness, I found it to be just a little piece of heaven. It is not hard to imagine it all finished with beautiful horses gracing the grounds. Central Florida Custom Homes is going to make some dreams come true. That is what they are all about. For more information on their services, you can log onto www.centralfloridacustomhomesinc.com or call 813-707-1221. If interested in finding out more on Alafia Estates, visit www.AlafiaRidge.com

Miss Heart of Plant City
Reigns Strong ON HER WAY TO MISS FLORIDA PAGEANT story by: BARBARA LANE photos by: JAMES LANE
Dare to Dream was the theme of the Miss Heart of Plant City Scholarship Pageant, held in the Plant City Historical Building on Saturday, March 20. The Co-Executive Director, President and Founder Brenda Barron White sang the Nation Anthem. Regan Paul is Co-Executive Director and Vice President & CEO. Paul said the contestant entries doubled this year, and she expects that increase again next year. This year’s pageant was the third held in Plant City, said Kitty Simmons, the Associate Director. White proudly boasted that the pageant has outgrown the Historical Building’s auditorium. This became certain as the hour of the competition approached. A rumble of excitement filled the room. Lively music, by Vinny Venice & Beyond Skillz, and red flowers added to the atmosphere of anticipation. Friends and family soon crowded together to watch the competition of swimsuits, evening gowns, talents, and interviews. Judges were Head Judge Marc Caglia, Henny Hias, Dr. Samuel Lamar Wright, Sr., Kevin Knox, and Christina Carter. Attending the pageant were local officials, including Pam Warnock, Associate Director of the Strawberry Festival, and the Strawberry Festival queen and her court. Pageant workers were Rick Carlton with security and backstage. Cortney Stokes worked the lighting. Wendy Maxwell and Tiffanie Campbell attended the ticket table. Sun n’ Fun is a Big Boom to Plant City Economy story by: KEN LAWRENCE
When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always long to return. ----Leonardo da Vinci It is one of the premiere aviation events in America, as thousands of people from around the world fly into Lakeland for the annual Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event, which stresses aviation education and air safety. It runs from April 13th to the 19th at the Lakeland airport, which is 15 minutes from Plant City.
RESIDENTIAL
• Custom Single Family Homes • Remodels • Additions • New Construction
The organizers of this huge event say “there’s something for everyone”, including youth aviation events. A team of British air cadets will be in attendance, once more showing the importance of Sun ‘n Fun.
• Store Builders • Retail Remodels
More than 500 exhibitors will be showing their products, plus over 450 educational forums with hands-on workshops. There will even be a large section of the Lakeland airport used for teaching people how to build their own aircraft.
COMMERCIAL
• Business Renovations • Townhomes
THE WALDEN MEADOW Living Area 1792 sq ft Total Area 2722 sq ft
Eyes will always be on the skies as one air show after another takes place, including the world famous F-18 “Blue Angels” precision flying team. Historical buffs will recall the U-2 spy plane of the 1960’s that nearly led to a conflict between the USA and the then USSR. That aircraft will be on display, along with too many to mention here. THE ECONOMIC IMPACT The boom to Lakeland’s economy is enormous, but it’s not confined to Polk County. From Clearwater to Orlando, Sun ‘n Fun impacts many businesses, bringing-in millions of tourist dollars. Next to Lakeland, Plant City benefits tremendously, including the local airport. Dozens of planes fly into Plant City because the runways at Lakeland are so busy. In fact, Lakeland’s airport becomes one of the world’s busiest during Sun ‘n Fun week. All area hotels, including Plant City, have been booked for weeks and restaurants expect to benefit from the thousands of flying enthusiasts who will be in the area. Local campgrounds are also booked. The Lakeland airport is almost equidistant from Plant City and the main shopping area along US 98 in Lakeland. So just about every retailer will have extra dollars in their tills by the end of Sun ‘n Fun on April 19th.

Erika Feiner: A Woman of History & Art
story by: SHERRI ROBINSON srobinson@floydpublications.com
Erika Feiner is a woman who is loved, not only by her husband, but also by everyone who meets her. German born, she came to the United States in 1948 as a war bride. From her experiences and memories she began to pen her now published book, "Yesterdays Enemies," which was not completed until some 30 years later. The book is a must read of what life was like for her and those she loved so much in war torn Germany. Be prepared to have some time to immerse yourself in it, because you won't want to put it down. Not only is Erika a published author, but she also is an accomplished artist. Recently, I had the honor of meeting her and her husband, Walter, in their Plant City home. It was filled with warmth, love, and many of her paintings. I was amazed to find out that she is exclusively self-taught. It was not until three years ago did she start painting. She previously spent all of her time writing. I am one of many who feel so touched by her work and am in awe of her abilities. Her paintings hold the

talent of one who has studied for many years, and the heart of one who is passionate and loves what she does. I saw a couple of paintings of horses that were exquisite. She has been told that horses are very difficult to paint, but she finds it easy because she loves them so much. I was thrilled to be invited into her studio and see where it all happens. The view from her window was lovely, and inspiration glistened on her canvas not yet dry from her present painting. Florida is a new surrounding for Erika, but she is adjusting well after relocating here with her husband this summer. She told me she was concerned that she wouldn't be able to adjust to the climate, but she has taken right to it. Since she has arrived she has enjoyed seeing the local wildlife, like the beautiful cranes. She says she used to be visited everyday by a crane couple, but now only the male shows up and seems very sad. She has started to add a little Florida to her paintings, so maybe we can talk her into doing one of her crane friend. Though she lives here now, Massachusetts is not far from her heart. She raised her family there and her work has been displayed in various art shows, including one at the Miter Box and Art Show & Holiday Art Sale, put on by the Milton Art Museum. One of her most memorable events was when she and her husband were invited to have lunch with the Mayor of Quincy. Though it is a big change to move from Massachusetts to Florida, I hope Erika and Walter will continue be happy here. We are happy to have you with us. You are a wonderful addition to our community. If you are
interested in seeing some of Erika's paintings and attending her book signing, you will find her at the "Art & All That Jazz" event, put on by the Plant City Arts Council, on April 24th from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., at the Walden Lake Park on Timberlane Dr. The parking and admission are free. You can also go to www.plantcityartscouncil.com for more information. She will also be at the Tampa Convention Center on April 25th for the "Celebration of the Arts." John Briggs Gets Heavenly “Calling” is painting four pictures for local church these breathtaking pieces that stretch to the ceiling, I wondered just how in the world one man could have so much beauty flow from him. Since March of last year, John has been working on these pieces. “Creating a painting is ninety percent planning, and ten percent painting,” John says. Before the paint hits the canvas, there is much preparation to be done. It all begins with research on the subject. It takes a lot of work to be sure that he accurately depicts his subject. Sketches and then small paintings of his planned artwork come next. On the top floor of his studio downtown, John can prepare the giant canvases his works require. After all the preparation, the real fun begins. The first paint hits the canvas, and then the details start to show through. The painting of Cain and Abel is almost ready to go, and John still has a little work left to finish with Noah. Over the past two and a half months, these paintings have become beautiful works of art. If you would like to see some of John’s work, it can be found not only in our community (such as the large paintings hanging in Buddy Freddy’s), but around the state and the nation as well. The walls of buildings in cities such as Bradenton and Miami are homes to John’s murals. His work can also be found in the Cummer Gallery of Art in Jacksonville, the Russell Rotundum in Washington, and the Sherry French Gallery in New York.

I met John Briggs and his lovely wife Betty in their beautiful historic home. The works of many artists, including sketches by Betty’s grandfather, hang on their walls. From his house, John and I walked to the 1914 high school to see his works in progress. On the way, I learned many things about Mr. Briggs. He says that he likely gets his creativity from his mother. John has been painting for over forty years. Although he enjoys drawing and printmaking as well, painting is his forte and his love. John got his Master of Fine Arts degree from Florida State University. He has since shared his love for art with others in many ways. His resume includes teaching art classes at the University of South Florida, Wringling School of Art and Design, and even teaching the animators at Disney Animation Studios. Through the National Endowment for the Arts, John has had the opportunity to travel all over Florida and teach children the wonder of art. He painted murals with children at Cork School. John also helped paint the train mural downtown, as a part of the community project. A little over a year ago, John told his wife that God “must be asleep,” since he wasn’t having much luck on the business end of his work. “God never sleeps,” she replied, and sure enough Father O’Doherty called later that day asking John to create four paintings to hang in his church. He has already completed two paintings, one of Moses, and one of Elijah ascending to heaven in the chariot of fire. The other two are hanging in an upstairs room in the 1914 high school and still in the works. Upon entering the classroom, I stood in awe of the fifteen-foot paintings. One dramatically depicts Cain and his slain brother, Abel. The other displays beautifully Noah beckoning the animals from his ark. As I stood between

Webster’s Dictionary defined marriage as the institution whereby men and women are joined together in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family. Sounds pretty simple when you put it in those terms, but as most of us know, it isn’t always a fairy tale. That’s why the 50th wedding anniversary is such a landmark. Through all of the trials, tribulations, and don’t forget the good times, making it to 50 years deserves a celebration. In this issue, Focus decided to honor those residents that have lived here, grown up here, married here, and have stayed married, right here in Plant City. And maybe learn a secret or two for a long and happy marriage. FOCUS PLANT CITY EDITION MARCH 15 - APRIL • 2004 PG 41

The first couple that I met was Jewel and Delma Graves. I met them at their house on Joe Sanchez road, into which I felt as welcome as any member of the family. While Jewel was born and raised in Plant City, his wife Delma moved here when she was 14 years old. Jewel told me the story of how they met, with a wistful look in his eye. They met when Jewel was working at the Farmer’s Market. Delma’s family had a small truck farm and she would bring the produce to the market to sell. “She caught my eye,” said Jewel. “We actually met over a hamper of spilled okra,” he said. Jewel was drafted into the army and they decided to get married while he was home on leave during the Korean War. “We got married in the preacher’s house,” said Delma. He was only home for a short time and they just
couldn’t wait. After their wedding, she moved with him to Fort Riley, Kansas. When his time in the service was up, they returned to Plant City to continue their life together. They had two children and 3 grandchildren. “We wouldn’t have raised our family anywhere else,” said Delma. “Our family was here and we love it here.” What is their secret to a happy and fulfilling marriage? Communication, honesty, being truthful, no matter what. “That’s the way you are supposed to be with someone you love,” said Jewel.
Lloyd and Mary Ann Middlebrooks welcomed me with open arms into their home. They both had smiles in their eyes, as well as on their
faces, a sign of a lifetime of happiness. They were married in 1952 and have been married for 52 years. Lloyd and Mary Ann met at a local shoe store called Amidon Shoes. Mary Ann worked there at the time, with a friend of hers. It seemed that Mary Ann’s friend had a little something up her sleeve when she had Lloyd come into the store to meet Mary Ann. They ended up going on a double date and got married 2 years later. In those 2 years, Mary Ann moved to St. Petersburg with her sister and worked for the city. “I came home every weekend,” she said. They couldn’t wait the year out to tie the knot, and Mary Ann moved home in 6 months.

Lloyd and Mary Ann have 3 children, and spent a lot of their time together on family vacations. “They were so important and gave us family time,” said Mary Ann. The secret to their marriage really is no secret, according to Lloyd. “I was saved when I was 19, right after we met. Mary Ann was already saved, and we dedicated our lives and marriage to the Lord. Commitment is what has kept us together all of these years,” said Lloyd. “The Lord has blessed us with a family and a wonderful life,” he said. Communication is another factor that has played a major role in the success of their marriage. “We can talk the morning away at this counter,” said Lloyd. All of this talking takes place under a wooden sign that dates the family to its foundation. “Established 1952.” They have really enjoyed their time as a family in Plant City. “It has really changed since we were kids,” said Lloyd. Their home on

Johnson Road has seen a lot of changes. “When we first moved out here, we were the only ones here. We used to look across the road to the pasture and watch the little calves run,” said Mary Ann. “Now there is so much that has gone up, they’re putting in a Chili’s right up the street.” While the Middlebrooks never expected so much change, they stressed that they would never have lived anywhere else and they still love Plant City. “It may have developed a little, but it’s still our little town,” said Lloyd.

[ featurestory ] Bobby and Vernice Polk were dressed up and ready to go have lunch when I arrived at their home on Wallace Branch road. They have been married for almost 51 years, and have lived in the same area all of their lives. “There was never a thought of leaving Plant City,” said Vernice.
Bobby lived on Sam Allen road growing up, just a stone’s throw from Vernice. They both attended Strawberry School because their families were farmers. (The Strawberry School was designed to accommodate the planting and harvesting of the crop so that all members of the family could help with the workload.) “I always knew who he was, but really didn’t think much of him,” Vernice joked, as her

husband looked on with a smile. It was Christmas Eve when they went on their first date. Bobby was very good friends with Vernice’s brother and came with him to Christmas dinner. It was a good situation, because her family knew Bobby and his family very well. One date led to another, and they finally decided to get married. “It was a great decision,” said Bobby. “We are the same thing now as we were when we started.” Their family was very traditional. “I made the living and Vernice took care of our home,” said Bobby. “It was important to both of us that our kids never came home to an empty house,” said Vernice. In fact, Vernice told the story of Bobby and Vernice Po lk Today

their granddaughter, Robin, who was never taught to cook. “But she sat on the bar stool every night when I made dinner and, now, she can cook anything she wants to,” said Vernice. “I learned as much from her on that bar stool than I would have any other way.” They love Plant City so much, and the tradition has been handed down to everyone in their family. In fact, every one in their family has lived on the original homestead, at one point or another. Their extended family pretty much owns the expanse of Wallace Branch Road, as some family member or another lives in the homes that line the street. “It was important to us that we raise our family here, and that we all stay together,” said Bobby. The secret to their marriage, they both agree, is communication. “Talking keeps us together,” said Bobby. Vernice has always carried on the tradition of Sunday dinners to get everyone together. And, of course, there is the occasional softball game. “We are in this thing for better or worse,” said Vernice. “And I wouldn’t change a minute of it.” It seems that Plant City has many traditions that make it unique. But the most honorable tribute has to be the families that have built their lives here, and have never thought of going anywhere else. It is the legacy of tradition that they will leave behind that will set the tone for what the future holds. *Couples were found from city database and interviewed on a first come, first serve basis, due to space consideration.

any of you in the community know Jim Redman. Some of you know him as a lawyer, some as a friend, and some of you know him as a Parkway. What you may not know is that he has been living with cancer for 26 years. Whatever you learn about the man from reading this interview, know this…he is a survivor!

FOCUS: Are you a native Plant “City-an”? Jim Redman: I have lived here all of my life and this is where I met my wife Ruby Jean. We have 3 girls-Susan Sullivan, Pam Bowden, and Jeanne Knotts. We also are blessed with 9 grandchildren. FOCUS: How did you meet your wife? JR: We always knew each other; we met through friends and decided we liked each other. We have been married now for 47 years. FOCUS: Why did you decide to become a lawyer? JR: I always knew that was what I wanted to do. I attended the University of Florida School of Law and worked to help pay my way through. My wife and I were married in my last year of law school. So when we started out, neither one of us had a job. Ruby Jean: If one of my girls would have done that I would have been scared to death!
]
FOCUS: How have you served in politics? JR: I served as a State Representative for 12 years. It was in my last year of service that Jim Redman Parkway was named. FOCUS: What was your reaction to that? JR: Well, I didn’t know they were going to do it. It was before I found out that I had cancer, but just a few months before. I told them that I didn’t believe in naming roads after people unless they were dead. They told me to sit down and shut up! I was highly honored. RJ: He pushed legislation to have the road widened, so that, and his length of service on the legislature is probably what prompted the naming of the road. FOCUS: When did you find out that you had cancer? JR: Well, my vertebrae collapsed on me and it was due to the cancer. I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. When the surgeons diagnosed me, they believed that I had 6 months to live.
So, they decided to operate, because there were not many options, and when they finished I was told that I had an incurable cancer. FOCUS: Not a very welcoming outlook. JR: No, it wasn’t. My good friend, Bob Trinkle, insisted that I get a second opinion. So I went out to Texas to MD Anderson to see Dr. Raymond Alexanian. They began chemotherapy immediately. RJ: We have lived with cancer for more than half of our married life. FOCUS: What was the prognosis when you saw Dr. Alexanian? JR: They gave us the option to try some experimental drugs, but still told us we were only looking at about 2 years. FOCUS: It has now been 26 years. What do you attribute to your longevity? JR: Nothin’ but the good Lord. If it were not for Him, there is no way that I would be here. I was determined not to give up. You have to keep a good attitude and you have to have the support of good friends, and a lot of prayer. RJ: He has been very determined not to let this get him down. His attitude has made it easier on me,and because of that, I can be more supportive. A friend of Jim’s was also diagnosed with cancer, and he just gave up. It was just too much to handle. I am so thankful that Jim has been able to keep up his strength, because we would have missed out on so much together. FOCUS: How has it changed your life? JR: You appreciate every day! One of my biggest fears was that I would not be able to walk my girls down the aisle. Not only have I been able to do that with all 3 of them, I have also hung around to see my grandchildren. FOCUS: What do you do now to keep yourself healthy? JR: I am still on a regimen of chemo and I take cycles of drugs, such as Thalidomide and Interferon. I go home from work every day around 1:30, to rest for about 2 hours. And I pray a lot. You can’t ever pray enough.

FOCUS: So you keep active. JR: Oh yes! I am still working, it keeps me strong. And, I take as many trips with my family as I can. RJ: A funny story- one time we took the RV to a campground and the politician in Jim came out and he went around greeting everyone in the campground. One of our friends made the comment that he was the mayor of the RV Park. FOCUS: When I asked to conduct this interview, you said you would do anything if it helped another person living with cancer. How have you been involved with helping others conquer this disease? JR: I meet with the person or speak to them on the telephone, encouraging them to fight against the cancer. This is only done upon request. My wife has been on the board of the American Cancer Society for the last 6 years and we get a team together for the Relay for Life. The most encouraging part of the event is that the survivors make the first lap. Seeing all of those survivors really sends the message that you don’t have to be a victim. There is hope. FOCUS: I know that every team must have a theme. What is yours? Ruby Jean: The theme of the event is “Let’s Toon Out Cancer” and the name of our team is the Prune Platoon. We had to choose a cartoon to characterize our team, so we chose Beatle Bailey. It just fit right in. FOCUS: What advice would you give to others that may hear the news that they have cancer for the first time? JR: Trust in God. Seek good medical care and pray, pray, pray. Without God, family, and friends, I would not be here.

The House That Meldrim Built Plant City Photo Archives, Inc FOCUS MAGAZINE, APRIL 15, 2004
Everyone knows the house that Meldrim built, even if you didn’t know he built it. Standing at 702 West Reynolds Street, the elegant structure exudes a flavor of history. And it has seen much history in its 94 years. Just after the turn of the century, Plant City was a prosperous place, with flourishing businesses and a growing residential area. Before strawberries, lumber and cattle were big; so, too, were cotton, vegetables, and a variety of other products, but lumber was very profitable. Captains of the lumber industry became wealthy almost overnight. One of them was James Wynn Meldrim, who started his timber and turpentine business in Georgia and relocated to South Florida where timber was more plentiful. He retired to Tampa at the age of 35, but went back into business shortly thereafter in Plant City. Some of this information comes from a letter written by Helen (Meldrim) Janes, who was born in 1906 and moved into the stately house that her father built in 1910. She writes that “four of the original fireplace hearths were of ceramic tile (different colors for different rooms)”. She wrote of the “taffy pulls”, and FOCUS PLANT CITY EDITION MARCH 15 - APRIL • 2004 PG 56
“sing-a-longs”, and making “Divinity candy”. And she wrote about the visitors. One guest was Mrs. Chisholm, “an elderly widow-lady who had been my dad’s school teacher. “She used to tell us about the time she danced with Robert E. Lee … and her husband had been a surgeon in the Confederate Army.” “She never went anywhere without her enormous Confederate flag which she always draped over the head of her bed.” Another was her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Morgan, also from Georgia, who would sit in one of the big porch rockers and tell stories of Br’er Rabbit, and of the time she was a young girl during the Civil War. The house has also seen a lot of money – big rolls of Confederate money handed down over the years, and now play money to the young Meldrims and their friends. Mr. Meldrim moved to St. Augustine in 1922, and the house has seen many changes
over the years, including its recent use as a “bed and breakfast”. Vicki and David Hawthorne now own the grand old house on Reynolds Street, and have restored her to her former grace, charm, and beauty. And the beautiful structure will continue its social ways – on Sunday, May 2nd, it will be the site of an event sponsored by the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation. This should be a wonderful debut for the renovated “house that Meldrim built”.
Resources: Plant City Photo Archives, Inc.; letter written by Mrs. Helen (Meldrim) Janes to Mr. and Mrs. Grimes, (who lived in the house at the time), dated May 14, 1979.

It’s that time of year again when the owners of homes in Walden Lake get to vote for the people they want to represent them on the Board of Directors of the Walden Lake Community Association. Hopefully, you will read this in time and attend the meeting on April 15th at the Walden Lake Golf Club, Banquet Hall at 7pm. There are seven candidates vying for three openings on the board, and some prominent residents have put their names on the ballot. One of the vacancies is that of Rich Glorioso, who is seeking the Republican nomination for the State House, replacing Johnnie Byrd. Byrd has been campaigning for the Republican nomination for the federal senate. Among the candidates is the current association president Frank Salerno, who lives in Village Green, and another present board member, Monte Guthrie of Parkwood. The new faces are…Marcus Alexich-The Paddocks, Jim Beier of Walden Place, Phil Garner of Forest Park, Roger Self-Forest Park and Ed Storer-Laurel Lake. Best wishes to all of the candidates and thanks for showing community spirit in seeking office. One question….where are the women candidates? The annual meeting, which will devote most of its time to the voting, will be open to questions from the floor about any issues. One really good piece of news… there will not be any increase in dues for this year
MUSIC in the PARK The sounds of Smooth Jazz will be wafting out over Walden Lake on Saturday April 24th, as the Plant City Arts Council hosts a day-long music festival called Art and All that Jazz at the community park. Some 6 or 7 well known jazz groups will perform between 10a and 5p. Food Vendors will be on site and to alleviate any parking problems, HART line buses will finally earn their keep. Plant City Police will not permit any parking along Timberlane Drive, and so vehicles will have to go to the Polo Field off Griffin Blvd and buses will shuttle folks to and from the festival site.

It’s going to be a great day and all we can hope for is that “mother nature” cooperates. Our order is for a few clouds, a bit of a breeze and temperatures around 78 degrees. Timberlane is Not a Drag Strip This is the result of a young driver moving too quickly and not paying attention. This mishap occurred recently on Timberlane Drive alongside Silverwood community, at mid morning when a teenager lost control of this SUV, jumped the curb and flipped. Luckily, the young man was not hurt, but was left plenty scared after he realized he could have easily lost his life. The median was damaged and insurance will also pay for repairs, along with the wrecked vehicle. This gives us an opportunity to once again tell drivers to please, please maintain the 30mph speed limit throughout Walden Lake. Not only is it for your personal safety but for that of others, including animals that dart across the road on occasion. As they say in the television news business where your writer toiled for a quarter of a century, “that’s a wrap”. Till next month, drive carefully.

It is hard to say what the best features of our home this month were. They were all so fabulous. I loved the community and was very attracted to the fact that it was so peaceful and beautiful. It was hard to believe it was just a hop, skip, and jump from the business of downtown Plant City. The Arbors at Countrywood had such a feeling of coming home that I was ready to move in there myself. "The Carthage" was the model I toured. I was impressed, when I walked in to this luxurious model, that it was like stepping into a real home, unlike many other modular homes that tend to give the feeling of instability and not so great workmanship. "The Carthage" is a comfortable two-bedroom/two bath/den with 2,362 square feet of room to stretch out and enjoy, whether it is a quiet evening at home or entertaining guests. If you want to break down the square footage just to see how it fits your space budget, here it is: Conditioned living area - 1,720 sq. ft,

Garage - 400 sq. ft., & Porch - 242 sq. ft. What more could you ask for? It has been built with the style of early 20th century America, complete with white picket fence and rocking chair-sized front porch. Who wouldn't love to relax there after a hard day? Let's talk about the standard features that could be extra everywhere else you might visit. Cathedral ceilings, upgraded carpeting and pad, skylight or solar tube, ceramic flooring in kitchen and bath, and designer appliances, just to name a few. Now hold on to your hats, here come the great additional options: hardwood flooring, garden tub, trey ceilings, two car garage, ceramic shower, designer window treatments, and too many more to mention. As I walked through the house, I picked out a few features I particularly loved. Besides the den, there was a small area just beside the kitchen that would make a perfect additional office.

It had a built in desk and cabinets that were cozy, yet practical. It could provide a quiet place just out of sight to plan the next day’s schedule or have a semi private telephone conversation. The icing on the cake was the attached garage. Now that would be a real treat! It would mean less work keeping your car clean and more time with your family,
especially this time of year when the pollen makes everything look green and yellow, ugh! Your happiness with your new home is very important to The Arbors of Countrywood, so they work hard to make sure your home is custom tailored to your personal tastes. The price is just right, ranging from an affordable low to mid $100’s. The Arbors offer so much more than just a great place to live. You could spend many leisurely hours playing golf, tennis, enjoying fitness and social activities. Visit The Arbors of Countrywood at 723 Sam Allen Road, just a short drive from wherever you are in Plant City, or call 813-754-3476 for more information.

Curb Appeal Sells It can't be overstated, when it comes to buying a house, the first impression is everything. If you're selling or getting ready to sell in the coming months, one of the easiest and most dramatic ways to enhance that first impression is through paint. Fresh paint makes your house look clean, bright, and inviting. Painting your house's exterior before you put it on the market gives the biggest bang for your
fix-up buck- if you use colors that conform with your neighborhood's decorating norm. Agents agree that sellers shouldn't take curb appeal lightly. Curb appeal is crucial, and buyers’ first impression shouldn't be that the outside of the home needs work
before they ever see the inside. Use fresh, neutral colors. If you're painting the exterior, make sure the color blends in with the neighborhood. Opt for neutral whites, creams, or beiges. These colors appeal to the greatest number of people. Whether you paint the house yourself or hire someone, make sure all the prep work is donewashing all dirt away, and patching and repairing
any necessary areas on the surface before it is painted. Paint railings, window frames, trim, and other accents to freshen up the exterior. It is very important to have a home looking its best and that starts as soon as a buyer drives up to the home. One important tip is to paint the front door if you cannot paint the whole house. This brings a good feeling as you enter the house. Another important tip is to get all your painting done before potential buyers view the house. A little time and effort in sprucing up your home before selling can make you thousands in the long run. Buyers want to feel that the home they are buying has been well taken care of and treated as if they own it already.

Marvelous Western Style Home Lives up to the Motto...
I
f you are looking for a home that is in the middle of it all, yet in your own little world, then this 160-acre estate located off of Bailey Road is just for you. This 5 bedroom, 4 bath, 2-half bath home provides 6800 square feet of air conditioned space, and is perfect for your growing family. The home, which showcases western décor, was completed in1997, and was zoned as a State Game Preserve due to the White Tail Deer shipped in from Texas, and the Antelope from India. The owner’s love of Texas is what inspired the interior design of the house. Do not think Southwestern. This is classic Western style. Every detail inside the home was imported from Texas or New Mexico. As you enter the front door, imported from Texas, your eyes fall on the focal point of the room, the double-sided fireplace. Created from 40,000 lbs. of stone, also imported from Texas, it provides heat and atmosphere for the living room, as well as the family room. The guest suite is large enough to house 2 queen-sized beds. It has an adjoining bathroom that is used by the entire household during the day, and at night the guests are able
FOCUS PLANT CITY EDITION MARCH 15 - APRIL • 2004 PG 82
to close themselves off in their own wing. All of the bedrooms have huge walk-in closets and private access to the pool. But the master bedroom is the most luxurious. The huge bedroom showcases a king-sized bed along with a leather king-sized chaise lounger. The details in the bathroom are just as meticulous. The “his and hers” sinks are ceramic, hand-painted, from Mexico. The tiled shower provides two showerheads, and a sign near the toilet states not to “squat with your spurs on.” A stained glass mission style window provides just the right light. Moving into the kitchen you notice the custom cabinets with the Texas Star in the center. The star motif is carried out in the etching of the glass on the doors that lead out to the lanai. You will find all of the amenities of a gourmet kitchen here. The granite counter tops are built for durability. At the back of the family room is a bar area. The windows open up to the lanai to
provide outside service as well. The beams that make up the marquis above the bar were salvaged from the former Circus World theme park. The marquis itself lights up to display a western cowboy scene. The barstools are covered in a brown and white cowhide to provide comfortable seating. The laundry room makes a “not so fun” task more bearable. The washer and dryer are raised so there is no bending over to move clothes from one to the other. There is plenty of storage space for detergents and other cleaners, as well as counter space to fold clothes. This space is also a great giftwrapping area, providing counter space and storage for wrapping supplies. As you walk through the glass doors out to the lanai the brick pavers lead your eye to the pool designed by Walt Disney World engineers. The lower pool has beach access at both ends and is about 3 and a half feet deep. The upper pool is 6 feet deep and is accented by a cascading waterfall. The “rock
mountain provides an area to relax in the sun. There is also an outdoor fireplace with charcoal and gas grills. Off of the pool is a game room, the perfect place to entertain for the adults or the children. Plenty of space for a pool table, there is also a 52-inch large screen television that includes surround sound, along with a wrap around leather sofa. There is a wet bar that provides plenty of entertaining space, with an icemaker and mini-fridge. The focal point of this room is the stained glass western scene window. As the sun sets the room is ablaze with the colors in the glass, giving you that Texas sunset feel. Above the game room is the guest suite. This suite has all of the amenities of home, but provides extra privacy for the guest. Along with this already incredible estate, is 4 deer feeders, a silo to supply them, and an auger that is pulled by a John Deer Gator to fill the feeders. The tractor is housed in a 3,000 sq.ft., 3 stall barn/garage. There are 2-12 ft. doors and 1-16 ft. door that would accommodate an RV easily. There is also a loft for extra storage. For those that enjoy hunting, there is a cleaning room with a walk-in cooler and stainless steel sinks. Covering the entire roofline area is a
metal seamless roof. The roof itself is guaranteed for a lifetime and the color, which is a hunter green, is guaranteed for 40 years. Last, but not least, toward the front of the property there is a convenient party pavilion, complete with a barbeque. Perfect for those kids that are of age to have friends over. It provides a safe place for them to entertain their friends, or for the adults to entertain when they don’t want to use the house. What is most amazing about this house is that it was not professionally decorated, so you will not find one like it anywhere. Each and every detail was lovingly chosen by its owners and will go with the house to provide warmth
and happiness to its new owners.

Fighting Identity Theft story by: JAMES H. DIMMITT
Chances are good that you know someone who has been victimized by the fastest growing crime - identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that there were 10 million cases of identity theft in 2002 alone. It’s estimated that someone’s identity is stolen every 79 seconds. The bad news is with increasing amounts of personal information available to an experienced identity thief, it shows few signs of slowing down. The good news is that identity fraud is now a federal crime with stiff penalties for those who perpetrate these crimes.
Our successes have been widely dependent on our ability to effectively communicate with our customers, and they with us. In that regard, I would like to say Thank You to the group at Lines of Communication for making that segment of our business a non-issue in the “concern” department and helping us earn the Chamber of Commerce 2002 Small Business of the year award. Here are a few simple steps you can take now to minimize your risk:
[ financial focus business profile
813-319-9000
1) Check your credit report annually, if not more often. Most victims of identity theft don’t realize they’ve been victimized until 14 months after the crime. By then the damage is done and you will spend a significant amount of time and money trying to correct it.
]
2) Keep your Social Security number private. Do not have it printed on your personal checks or drivers license. Do not share it with anyone, including merchants, unless they can provide a good reason for having it. Once someone has your Social Security number they have the key to unlocking your identity and using it fraudulently. 3) Shred offers for pre-approved credit cards that you receive by mail. Do the same with any receipts that contain account numbers or your Social Security number. Identity thieves are not afraid to go “dumpster diving” in order to obtain your personal information. Identity theft has become the fastest growing crime because it is the most profitable crime. On average, the loss from identity theft is about $18,000.00. Taking these precautions now can save you from becoming another statistic in the fight against identity theft.

[ financialfocus ] 529 Plan Can Help You Cope with College Costs submitted by: EDWARD JONES
In a few weeks, the school year will be coming to an end. If you have young children, you're that much closer to the day when they head off to college. And if you want to help them pay for their schooling, the time to start saving is now, because college costs are moving in only one direction - up. Just how high are the costs of higher education? Consider these figures from the College Board: In 2003-2004, the average annual total charges (tuition, fees, room and board) at a four-year public institution is $10,636, while the corresponding figure for a four-year private school is $26,854. And if college expenses continue to rise faster than the general inflation rate, you can expect much higher costs in the future. Fortunately, you've got some attractive college savings vehicles available - and one of the best of these is the Section 529 plan, named after that part of the Internal Revenue Code authorizing these accounts. You can choose from two types of Section 529 plans: a pre-paid tuition program or a savings plan. In a pre-paid tuition plan, you buy future tuition credit - at today's prices - at an in-state, public school. If your child or grandchild decides not to attend your state college, you can transfer the value of your contract to private and out-of-state schools. In a Section 529 savings plan, you put money in specific investments. All withdrawals will be free from federal income taxes; as long as the money is used for a qualified college or graduate school expense of the beneficiary you've named typically, your child or grandchild. (However, the money will appear as income on the child's tax return.) Withdrawals for expenses other than qualified education expenditures may be subject to federal, state and penalty taxes. This tax benefit is effective through 2010, unless extended by the U.S. Congress. Section 529 plan benefits Of the two types of 529 plans, the savings plan is far more popular. In many ways, it offers more freedom than the pre-paid tuition plan, and, of course, it has tax advantages. But the 529 savings plan also offers other key benefits, including the following: • High contribution limits - Section 529 plan contribution limits are typically quite high - more than $200,000 per beneficiary in many state plans. Special gifting provisions apply. As with many investments, before investing in a 529, you should consult your tax professional. • No residency requirements - You can generally contribute to the Section 529 plan of any state you choose, even if you don't live there. However, if you participate in your own state's plan, you may receive additional tax benefits. • Investment flexibility - If you want to move your investment around, you can generally change to a different option in a 529 savings plan once a year. You can also transfer your account to a different state's program as often as once every 12 months. • Estate planning advantages - If you're a grandparent, you may be especially interested in the 529 savings plan. Because you can contribute large amounts of money to the plan, you'll be able to reduce the size of your taxable estate. Plus, even though the assets are out of your estate, you retain control of them. You decide who will get the money and when they'll get it. You can even change the beneficiary to another family member. So, there you have it - some reasons to consider investing in a Section 529 plan. If this plan is appropriate for your individual needs, it can be a great way to help boost your college savings. As for your child's grades - well, that's up to them. Plant City L I M O U S I N E S E R V I C E story by: LINDA FLOYDphotos by: MIKE FLOYD linda@floydpublications.com
Have you noticed a big, shiny white stretch limousine driving around Plant City lately? If so, you are like countless others that have come to know Plant City Limousine Service over the past year. Even though the service has been in business for about a year, it has already made an impact on the luxury transportation business for Plant City residents. Bob Hughens is the General Manager of the limousine service and Bob wants everyone to know that you can feel secure in trusting your luxury transportation needs to Plant City Limousine Service. According to Bob, “We take pride in offering excellent customer service and will go the extra mile to make sure our customers are happy with our service.” Before the creation of Plant City Limousine Service, customers would have to call a limousine service from the Tampa/St. Pete or Lakeland area, which usually resulted in higher fees, due to the distance that limousine companies had to travel. Bob states, “We are proud to be a small town business, serving the needs of our residents, in and around Plant City. We can offer competitive rates while still being sensitive to the individual needs for each occasion”. They are creative in the services they provide. For example, for a wedding, Plant City Limousine Service offers a red carpet for the bride, color coordinated napkins inside the limo to match the wedding colors, and a horn that plays “Here Comes the Bride” to announce the bride’s arrival. During the Christmas season, the company offered chauffeured Christmas light rides to Tampa and St. Petersburg to see the dazzling light displays that were offered. The interior of the limousine was decorated with Christmas decorations, Christmas cookies and punch were served, and

Christmas movies were played on the tv/vcr, while Christmas music played through the stereo sound system. “By adding some of these little touches, the limousine trips were made more festive and fun,” said Bob. Being a part of the Plant City community, Plant City Limousine Service feels that it is providing an important and valuable service to the town. Bob states, “I remember how proud I felt when I drove the limousine in this year’s Strawberry Festival Grand Parade. I looked out at the thousands of men, women and children smiling and clapping as I drove by and I realized at that moment that this is why we are in business today. It is because of the wonderful residents of this great town that we will continue to offer the best limousine service available.” They are the reason why Plant City Limousine Service continues to give back to the community with things like donating limousine rides to students and athletes at local schools as rewards for performing outstanding jobs. Bob wants everyone to know that when you hire Plant City Limousine Service, you can be assured of your safety and satisfaction. Plant City Limousine Service is a very tightly regulated business, which is controlled by the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission (HCPTC). Before anyone can open a limousine service in Hillsborough County, that person must submit an application with a business plan and be approved by the
HCPTC board. Then, satisfactory evidence of adequate liability insurance (currently $1 million coverage) must be presented. All vehicles must be a 1999 or newer model before a license and permit is issued. All drivers are screened by the HCPTC and must undergo a mandatory drug screening and a criminal background check. It is only after all of these conditions are met that a license will be issued. Bob says, “It seemed like a lot of red tape to go through, but I now realize how important it is to make sure that total compliance is met to insure the safety of all those that you transport. We want the community to know that we provide a safe and dependable service. The vehicle you hire will always be sparkling clean and your driver will be ready to serve you with a smile and a great attitude. Seeing the enjoyment on a customer’s face is what makes us strive for excellence.” Plant City Limousine Service is a member of the Plant City Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau. They are available for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor/bachelorette parties, proms, homecomings, corporate events, or just a night out on the town. If you would like to book a limousine, please call Bob or his staff at (813) 719-1711, or stop by his office at 702 W. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in Plant City. They will be delighted to hear from you.

Everyone looks back on high school in different ways. For one power couple, it is setting the stage for a very successful life ahead. Krysteena Wakefield and Aaron Reibling are seniors at Plant City High School and have been high school sweethearts for the past year and 4 months. They met when in 8th grade after Aaron relocated from Winter Haven. As we all know, it is tough to go to a new school and make new friends, but Krysteena made it a little easier for Aaron by offering him the chair next to her in Homeroom. Since then they have been great friends and recently became a couple. Krysteena was extremely impressed with what a great guy Aaron is, by how he treats everyone and how he always is there for his friends, lending a strong shoulder in time of need. This young couple is very active in their school. Currently, Krysteena is class president and is on the graduation committee, and Aaron is Vice President. They are both in the National Honor Society, LEO, and Diversified Career Technologies. Right now their
main focus is on preparing for graduation and college. They plan to attend USF and participate in the Honors Program. Krysteena plans to study Communications and Political Science and Aaron wants to get a degree in Engineering. Besides school and extra curricular activities they both hold part time jobs. Krysteena works for Plant City Internal Medicine Specialists as a medical receptionist. Aaron works for Universal Hospital Services, where he repairs and ships hospital equipment. They lead very busy lives, but still they find time to volunteer in the community. They volunteer with the Chamber Of Commerce for the Bike Fest every month, selling raffle tickets under the white canopy. They also volunteered during the Strawberry Festival with the Lion's
]
Club, serving food in the Lion's Booth. Krysteena was "Leo the Lion" in the Festival Parade. Krysteena and Aaron not only help their own community but also have reached out to surrounding communities in the past by volunteering for Hillsborough River Cleanup and the Relay for Life. As you can see, both Krysteena and Aaron are caring, giving young people, but I haven't yet mentioned how talented they are. Aaron attends church at St. Peter's Episcopal and First Nazarene Church of Winter Haven and is an active member of the youth group at each place. He offers his musical talent playing the guitar with the praise groups. Krysteena recently joined our writer's group at FOCUS and is doing a fantastic job covering stories. She is quite a talented writer and photographer. As the school year comes to a close, Krysteena and Aaron will be closing one chapter to their life and on to the next. They can feel proud of all their accomplishments and the lives they have touched. College will be filled with new experiences and opportunities. I know they will take advantage of every one of them. We don't hear enough about great young people such as Krysteena and Aaron. They give all of us a little bit of hope that our world is a great place and we can be secure knowing that they are part of what will keep it that way. Good luck in your college career and your future endeavors, Krysteena and Aaron. You are an inspiration to us all.

America’s Pastime is Being Batted About A FORMER MAJOR LEAGUE STAR AND PLANT CITY RESIDENT TALKS ABOUT BASEBALL TODAY story by: KEN LAWRENCE

“I think Little League Baseball is a wonderful thing. It keeps kids out of the house”----Who Else, but Yogi Berra. The talk these days about baseball is not about the latest Yogi-ism or comparison of a player of this era versus a star of another. Unfortunately, the game has lost an edge over the years, and a former star Major Leaguer, now Walden Lake resident, has some thoughts as to why. Let’s stroll down memory lane when the “Brothers Niekro” toiled in the Bigs and dazzled hitters and fans with their almost patented knuckleball. Phil and Joe
FOCUS PLANT CITY EDITION MARCH 15 - APRIL • 2004 PG 90
Like father, like son - Joe & JJ Niekro were definitely of the old school of baseball when players plied their trade for as little as $5,000 a season. Some of today’s moundsmen practically earn that much with each pitch. Joe Niekro and brother Phil grew up in Lansing, Ohio, a coal-mining town that
turned out many athletes over the years. Taught to use the knuckleball by their father, the Niekro boys were a huge success, and sometimes controversial, as they were accused on occasion of doctoring the ball. (The presence of a piece of sandpaper or a nail file simply
[ means the brothers were good manicurists) Joe won a World Series ring in 1987 with the Minnesota Twins and retired shortly thereafter. He eventually moved to Plant City and Walden Lake to be near Lakeland, where his two children from his first marriage reside. One of those offspring is Lance Niekro, age 24, who is in Triple A, being groomed to be the next 1st Baseman for the San Francisco Giants. There is a third child from Joe’s second marriage, JJ, who is 6 and an avid ballplayer. JJ even rose from bed at 5:30 one recent morning to watch the Devil Rays and Yankees play their season opener in Japan. Joe and his wife Debbie obviously love the lifestyle of Plant City and Joe coaches his son’s baseball team. A Look at Today’s Game “The game hasn’t changed. The pitcher’s mound is still 60’6” from home plate, but the personalities certainly have”, says Niekro as we sat in his home, where one room is packed with memorabilia that could have kept your writer there all day. “Baseball is so much more ‘corporate’ today”, noted the pitcher, who threw for 7 teams during his illustrious career.
He noted that the corporate image is not confined to baseball, but to all major sports and that persona has also found its way into the players way of thinking. This led us into the continuing controversy of performance enhancing drugs that some players have been accused of taking. “If you look at some of the numbers during the past 6 or 7 years, I mean they’re just phenomenal”, referring to home runs and high batting averages. Joe Niekro pointed out his son Lance, whom he says “pumps weights regularly and will never look like some of those guys do”. Joe would not identify any specific players during the interview with FOCUS but any baseball fan certainly can. The Answer? Joe Niekro doubts that the Major League Baseball Players’ Association will ever agree to testing for drugs, but wishes they would. His remedy to stop use of steroids and the like is simple. If there were an agreement to test tomorrow, “players would be given one year to stop taking these substances and clean out their systems”. Niekro says every player would then be tested a year from now and if any are

found to be using banned substances, they would be suspended without pay for one year. When they return the following year, they would only be paid the league minimum salary. If they were caught a second time, they would be banned from baseball. Pitcher Joe admits the Players’ Association would never agree to his proposal, but if baseball did something like that, it would restore its image immediately. He says the present non-drug-policy is not fair to his son and many, many others who do not pump drugs and steroids into their bodies. In spite of the substance abuse issue, Joe Niekro still believes passionately in baseball and as the interview concluded, he invited your writer to go and see his son JJ play at Currier Field that night. I did and it was a great feeling to be able to relive my youth for just a few minutes. Baseball might be hurting, but it will never die!

Plant City Lancers story by: SHANNON AGUILAR
The Plant City Lancers Under 11 boys’ soccer team made it all the way through three rounds of stiff competition to become the number one team in the Region C Cup tournament. The final weekend of the tournament was held at Veterans Field in Spring Hill and was a single elimination round. Plant City won their first game on Saturday in a 2-0 shut out over East Lake. Raymundo Marquez scored the first goal, with an assist from AJ Black. AJ then scored the second and final goal with an assist from Raymundo to seal the victory. This win allowed them to enter the final round on Sunday. They were scheduled to play one of their toughest opponents to date, the Temple Terrace Spirit. It was a very physical meeting, but all the boys brought their best games. AJ Black, with an assist from Jorge Martinez, scored the Lancers’ one and only goal. The team managed to shut out the Spirit in a 1-0 victory, sealing the Lancers’ status as the top team in the Region C Cup. Although the Lancers had made it to this final game in previous years, this was their first Championship and the boys could not have been more excited.

It was the perfect example of the culture clash in America. Believers versus non-believers! It was catty ABC News reporter Diane Sawyer versus Mel Gibson. Sawyer tried her condescending best to make Gibson look like a crazed loony, which, of course is what all followers of Jesus must be. And it wasn’t the questions that bothered me as much as the way Sawyer delivered the query. Her words said, “Do you think God ordained you to make this?” Her face and squirming said, “So who do you think you are that God, if there is one, would ever use you!” Her words said, “Do you think the Bible is historically factual?” Her face and squirming said, “Come on Mel, this is just a stupid book written by a bunch of paranoids hundreds of years ago. There isn’t anyone who believes it has an historical accuracy.” Her words said, “Some of the critics are worried you actually think this is the truth. Do you?” Her face and squirming said, “Mel, baby, please. You’ve been at the movies way to long to think this Jesus stuff is actually true. Right?” Her words said, “People are wondering if your father’s views are your views?” Mel’s father has written several books questioning the severity of the holocaust. Mel has already disavowed those beliefs, but dearly loves his father. Her face and squirming said, “Mel, it’s obvious your father is a Jew-hater. Are you sure you are not a Jewhater, as well? And did you count how many times Sawyer asked if Gibson was anti-Semitic? No less than four times. Repeat something often enough and often times it is believed. Read my lips, Diane. NO! NO! NO! NO! Her words said, “People say you are taking

advantage of the controversy in order to make money?” No need to translate that. And, I love Gibson’s answer. “I’m not looking for a Burger King hook-up or anything like that.” He spent 25- million dollars of his own money on this film and doesn’t care if he makes a nickel in profits. It was pathetic! I have never, ever seen a reporter trying so hard to interject her “disgust”, her “disdain”, her personal bias, into an interview. Even her attack on Gibson’s father was filled with that fluff and stuff of reporters too filled with themselves to remain neutral. And I wasn’t the only one with that interpretation. But than again, what should we have expected from ABC, which spent so much time hyping the interview you began to wonder if Disney might somehow be involved. Now to Mel Gibson. I was extremely impressed. Gibson was funny and honest and as direct as possible without sounding cocky. Any believer can understand when God gives you talents you use them to His glory, which is precisely what Gibson is doing. He didn’t blow off Sawyer when she asked if God had ordained him to make this film. Here are just a few of his direct quotes, most short and sweet and to the point. “Yes, I believe the Bible is historically factual.” “Everything in it? “ gawked Sawyer, her eyes about to pop out of her head. “You either accept it all or not at all.” “I do not believe this film is anti-Semitic! It goes against the tenants of everything I believe. In fact, it’s anti-Christian to be anti-Semitic!” Commenting on his conversion some 13-year ago: “I’ve done a lot of things, a lot of things I’m not proud of.” “The real medal goes to my wife… she hoped for years…. The best friend I ever had.” “I was brought to the
Story By: AL RUECHEL brink of suicide. Suicide is the height of spiritual bankruptcy.” He also said no one person witnessed to him but that one night “I hit my knees. Pain is the precursor to redemption.” “I am a work in progress, extremely flawed.” He also talked about New York Times columnist Frank Rich and a series of articles that sought to discredit Gibson and drive a wedge between he and his father. Rich also claimed Gibson was Jew-baiting in order to attract more publicity. Gibson said, “If you can’t get the message, then get the man.” Yet on the central topic, Gibson was clear. His film is not anti-Semitic. Even the head of the anti-defamation league had to admit that neither Gibson nor the film is anti-Semitic. The concern is that some will react to it that way. Of course throughout the piece ABC kept showing clips of the Nazi concentration camps. Gibson says the problem some Jews have with the film is the same problem they have with the four gospels. They don’t agree with or understand the story. In short, they don’t accept that Jesus, a Jew himself, is the Messiah. And why doesn’t Gibson do what some of his detractors have suggested and put a sentence on the screen at the end that says, “don’t leave here with hatred for the Jewish people.” “That’s not necessary because this film is not about hatred. It’s about the love of God for his people despite how much they… we… you and me, Diane, despised Him.” Go see the film. Like the word of God on which it is based, the person of Jesus speaks through eternity to those willing to listen.

[ johnniebyrd ] ECONOMIC GROWTH If any doubt lingered in the minds of critics about the condition of Florida’s economy, such misgivings were surely erased by recent news from state economists. The Revenue Estimating Conference, composed of state experts, announced last week that the anticipated state government revenue increase would total over $1.1 billion for the coming year. That is a resounding confirmation of growth, jobs, and a booming economy. But Florida’s economic success has not come about by happenstance. Floridians have long insisted on a low-tax, business-friendly approach to government that has left them alone to pursue their hopes and dreams. Working Florida families are the source of our state’s prosperity. These taxpaying citizens have worked hard, played by the rules, and consistently created quality communities. In the public policy arena, we are often faced with more demands than we have money to fund them. I am sure that this is true in all facets of life: we often run out of “money” before we run out of “month”.

They say opportunity knocks only once, but temptation bangs on the door for years. In the legislative process, many have banged on the door for years, expecting to accomplish their goals by way of the public coffers. Are all who seek funding from government misdirected? Certainly not. But here is the reality: government is not always the most appropriate source of spending or regulation. In many cases, government may be the quick fix, but performs poorly in the long run. While the Florida House will insist that the state’s most vulnerable are cared for, we will simultaneously insist that state government live within its means so that Floridians can live out their dreams back home. As we develop the state’s budget in the coming weeks, we intend to once again apply “kitchen table economics” much like every family does to ensure that monthly spending does not exceed personal income.

Laptops Today story by: JIM BROWN
Are you thinking about making that purchase for the new Laptop, but you just don’t know which way to go? The prices vary so much that you just can’t make heads or tails of the differences. Let me see if I can help you with a bit of knowledge you may be missing. Today there are several different options available in the Laptop/Notebook arena. You have less expensive laptops that use desktop processors and have a very short battery life. You also have mobile processors available and you have mobile processors configured with all of Intel’s Specs to make them Centrino. The Centrino Laptop by far is the greatest configuration on the market for many reasons. 1. Centrino Technology offers a much longer battery life, ranging from 8-10 hours of battery life before having to recharge. 2. They have wireless technology built right into your laptop. 3. They are typically smaller, weighing in at about 4.8 lbs. 4. They do not overheat because the mobile processor runs much cooler than the desktop processors do. Therefore, I’d put my money on the Centrino every time. We only sell Centrino mobile laptops due to the stability you will find with this technology and the longevity they will have, versus a laptop with a desktop processor, which is what you will find at most of the chain stores. Just be aware and be informed, if you don’t know, ask. If they can’t answer, leave. If anyone has a Centrino success story, send it our way and we will put it in next Month’s article. Last month I wrote to you all about the prospect of Internet postage and received much e-mail on the matter. From what I could see, we all agree, but this is what Rose had to say:
I think it is crazy for them to want to charge for stamps for emails. I just delete the junk mail I don't want. No one says they have to open it. That is a simple solution. Just delete it; if you open it then you just continue to get more and more. I rely on my email to keep in touch with family and friends from out of state. It is quicker than mail and in most cases would be too late to get in touch with them. Most of them don't have answering machines so this way they don't miss a call from me. I have been doing some studying and really it is a legal term called double dipping if they charge for sending email. They already charge us for our service. I also have been getting opinions from others and a lot of them said they would get rid of the computer if they have to start paying for email. Most of my friends and family only use the computer for email. Why can't the Government leave things alone? They already screw us out of enough money as it is. Jim Says: Rose, don’t get rid of your computer just yet. You bring up some valid points and I think most of us feel the same way. We will definitely keep our eye on this issue and keep you all posted on anything that may happen. Maybe we can get Johnnie Byrd to help us if this topic does gain momentum. 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
I am pretty sure I remember the first time I saw the commercial advertising this phenomenal new car! I remember getting really excited because my heart has long been devoted to this particular brand. Your first car is almost as special as your first everything else. In my case, my first car was a ’69 VW Bug. I paid $300 for it, drove it home and then it wouldn’t start again for a few months. I loved that car, did a lot of the work myself (with my all knowing father’s assistance) so, imagine my enthusiasm when the new VW Touareg captured my heart once again. Volkswagens are such inspiring little cars (I digress back to my terrific memories of my first Bug – my sister wrecked it later – still haven’t forgiven her for that one!) And, up until just recently that’s all the VW has been, a little car or an awkward looking minivan. Now, they have ventured into the realm of SUV’s, and I think that’s a great step! The Touareg boasts a 19-22 inch ground clearance and is perhaps the most versatile VW ever created (not taking into consideration the unforgettable VW Thing). Like other SUV’s, it’s comfortable and fun to drive, but unlike its SUV predecessors, it’s the best German SUV around! There are too many options on the Touareg to list, but I am going to attempt to give you a brief overview of them. So, here goes: ∑ Dual-zone climate controls (Climatronic). ∑ Anti-theft vehicle alarm system that coves the doors, hood, hatch, radio, and starter interrupt, with warning LED and audio activation, too ∑ Multi-function onboard computer that features adjustable settings for vehicle unlocking, exterior mirror synchronization, exterior headlights coming home/leaving home, tire pressure monitoring system and speed warning ∑ Premium VI AM/FM radio with single CD player and ten speakers ∑ 4XMOTIONTM - permanent four-wheel drive system with low range gear and adaptive torque distribution ∑ Power glass sunroof with tilt, slide, tinted glass, manual sunshade and driver's door power lock operated convenience-closing feature (something I missed when I had a Civic – the sunroof doesn’t close automatically – I wonder if this is just a VW feature – if so it’s pretty cool!) The Touareg comes in either V6 or V8. The V6 is a 3.2L with 220 horsepower, while the V8 is a 4.2L with 310 horsepower. Both are terrific powerhouses with plenty of get up and go. Of course, with the price of gas these days perhaps the V6 is your best option, economically. I must admit though, that I think I would sacrifice economy for performance any day (if I had the means that is) – thus I’d buy the V8. I guess it doesn’t matter which you choose, because when you’re buying a Volkswagen, you’re buying a lifestyle. VW drivers are dedicated to their VW’s and have a tendency to buy more VW’s as life goes on. Check them out and let us know what you think! (Wouldn’t it be great if PC had a VW store? Just a thought.) FOCUS PLANT CITY EDITION MARCH 15 - APRIL • 2004 PG 99

] Escape to Another Time & Place in St. Augustine THE OLDEST CITY IN THE US IS RIGHT HERE IN FLORIDA
story & photo by: SHERRI ROBINSON
There's nothing like getting away, but the hassle of plane reservations, rental cars, and other time consuming tasks don't seem to make it worth the effort. Wouldn't it be wonderful to go some place romantic and fun, without the trouble? Well, you can. I have found the perfect place. St. Augustine, Fl. It is just a short 3 - 4 hour drive north from Plant City. My friend and I spent a wonderful three days this past month exploring all it had to offer. Not only did we find great lodging close to scenic Old Town and the water, but found the people to be friendly and helpful. It was
and we looked for entertainment. We found a local comedy club, Gypsies Comedy Club, just across the bridge. The comedians were great and Jackie, her son Josh, and staff were so hospitable. My friend even got a few minutes of stand up time in. Soon it was time to retire. Tomorrow would be our last day there, but we wouldn't be leaving before we visited Ripley's Believe It Or Not. Wow, what an interesting place! I loved the hands on games and puzzles, not to mention a great gift shop where I just had to buy a souvenir for the kids back home. There is so much more to do that we didn't get to, such as go on horse drawn carriage rides, sightseeing train tours, the fort, Alligator farm, and checking out the numerous bed and breakfast inns. I guess we had to save something for the next time, and there definitely will be a next time. It is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to, and has so much to learn about it's history I'm sure it would take me at least a week to sort through it all. Hey..that's a great idea. For more information on St. Augustine, you can visit one of the many sites at www.staugustine.com or www.oldcity.com To find out more information on lodging at a bed and breakfast, type in “ St. Augustine Bed and Breakfast” for a ton of web sites to check out.
a weekend to die for. There was so much to see, we could've spent at least two days finding all the quaint, out of the way places to have coffee or listen to great music. Our first stop was at the visitor's center for a map and brochures of tours, museums, bed & breakfasts, and more. After checking out a favorite spot of mine from many years before, The Milltop, we decided our best bet was to roam around, take a few pictures, check out the shops and sample the local food. The best food of the weekend was had at a little place called the Pizza Garden. We ordered the Vegetarian Pizza with no onions or green peppers. The veggies were so fresh and sliced to just the right size. It was complemented by a tomato/garlic sauce and topped with delicate mozzarella cheese. Mmmwah! We toasted the meal with a glass of light, sweet wine. It was so romantic sitting in the open, with soft background music, surrounded by beautiful flowers and the intoxicating scent of fresh baked pizza. The great thing about St. Augustine is, even after you have a good meal, there is always time and a place to walk it off before retiring for the evening. That is exactly what we did. Soon the evening overtook us

The Tast of Philly-Westshore - Plant City’s New Heart Throb

Until recently, I had given my heart to Papa John’s. But, now that I have had the awesome fortune of tasting Westshore’s pizza, I am going to have to say goodbye to my dedication to Papa John’s (so sorry). Westshore doesn’t just serve some of the most amazing pizza. We’re talking about mouth watering, splendidly cheesy, huge slices of deliciousness. They make a whole array of other equally delectable fare. Westshore opened on February 1st of this year. Karis and Chris Denhoff are the owners. They are both very down to earth people with great senses of humor and terrific taste in food. The great thing about Westshore is that it’s a franchise. There are 44 restaurants between Tampa, Orlando and Pinellas County. Franchises (unlike some mom and pop restaurants) seem to do very well in Plant City. We arrived to a full restaurant, which also does take out orders and delivery. Karis and Chris had prepared an insane amount of food for our discriminatory pallets. They made us their signature pizza (we chose pepperoni and mushroom) – which was, of course, wonderful. They also made me some unforgettable
manicotti. I’ve only had manicotti at one other place (that’s still open) in Plant City, and Westshore’s far surpasses my previous manicotti experience. It was super cheesy and absolutely “yummy.” In addition, they gave us their mild wings which are not too spicy, but spicy enough (if you know what I mean). The cool thing about the wings at Westshore is that people on the everpopular Atkins diet should check them out, since they aren’t loaded with carbs like other breaded wings are. There were also bacon cheese fries. I love cheese fries but I am often skeptical of bacon cheese fries. The reason? Well, most places use those generic “Bacos,” but thank goodness, Westshore doesn’t use them at all. Instead, the fries were sprinkled with real bacon pieces! Westshore makes all their bread fresh, and it is so moist and phenomenal. A good example of that freshness is their calzone. The calzone bread was lightly seasoned and buttered. It was filled with cheese and ham – excellent. I cannot say enough good stuff about Westshore. The owners are really nice, and the food is incomparable. In all honesty, we order from Westshore at least once a week, so long as we’re not broke. But, Westshore has such great
deals that it’s hard to resist! My brother will come over to my house whenever I want him to if I promise him a Westshore Philly Cheese steak. It’s just that good, and for people like me, who don’t like red meat, Westshore also has Chicken Cheese steak – I love those! Check them out; I know you’ll enjoy them just as much as we do! Oh, and by the way, don’t forget to tell them that Focus sent you!

Emerson Drive
Scores a Hit, Big Time
story by: LINDA FLOYD photos by: MIKE FLOYD linda@floydpublications.com
Some of the crowd at The Ramada Inn Plantation House Convention Center on Wednesday, March 31st, really had no idea what they were in for! Emerson Drive, a contemporary country music group from Canada, was appearing in the Convention Center’s intimate concert setting. They released their first album, Emerson Drive, in 2002, after spending six grueling years touring in an old bus, then a van. In that same year, they received a Billboard Music Award for Breakthrough Country Artist of the Year. In 2003, they were named Top New Vocal Duo/Group by the Academy of Country Music. Their first album, which rose to #13 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, produced two songs that reached the Billboard Hot Country hits chart, #3 “Fall Into Me” and #5 “I
Should Be Sleeping”. All that aside, the band’s name hasn’t become a household word, yet, unless you listen every day solely to today’s country music. That not being the case for yours truly, I was there primarily to cover the concert. It was an eye-opening experience for me, I’ll tell you. First of all, down one of the halls in the Convention Center, they were selling hamburgers and hotdogs, with all the fixing’s, for $3 apiece! That was a pleasant surprise for me. But not the biggest one I would get that night. Mark McGuinn was the opening act, and not only could he sing, but his drummer was quite an entertaining fellow. The group really had the place going during the last two songs Mark McGuinn sang. Then it was time for Emerson Drive. Oh my gosh, when they came on and the lights went back up, Emerson Drive exploded! In the
next two seconds, they had everyone’s rapt attention! I wish I could express to you how great Brad Mates is on lead vocals, but there’s not enough space. And David Pichette on the fiddle was another phenomena, as was Danick Dupelle on the guitar. Rounding out the rest of the group was Patrick Bourque on bass, Dale Wallace on keyboards, and Mike Melancon on drums. Before it was halfway over, there was a line the breadth of the stage, 3 deep, with people singing, dancing, whooping and whistling, they were so taken away with this band! Their songs “Looking Over My Shoulder” and “It’s All About You” almost had the crowd in a frenzy. I’m telling you that if the Ramada Inn Plantation House ever brings back Emerson Drive, you’d better get your tickets early, because word is going to get around! They were just awesome! The Crests
story & photo by: SHERRI ROBINSON srobinson@floydpublications.com
The Crests were part of the February performances at the Ramada Inn Plantation House in Plant City. They put on a great show, bringing back fond memories of an era of music that many in the crowd could relate to. The group exuded amazing energy and the lead singer Tommy Mara was phenomenal with the audience. He came right down where we were and sang to us. My favorite song was "Summertime." Their performance was superb. A few of the songs the Crests are famous for are Step By Step, The Angels Listened In, & Trouble in Paradise, My Juanita, and Six Nights A Week. The song they are most remembered for is Sixteen Candles, which they played as their final song for the night at the Ramada. I know FOCUS PLANT CITY EDITION MARCH 15 - APRIL • 2004 PG 106
everyone will be looking forward to having the Crests bring their music back to Plant City. DAWN OF THE DEAD - R
SPARTAN - R
Starring: Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Webber, Mekhi Phifer, Ty Burrell (Movie Tips: It's always good to go to the Mall and never use a chainsaw while driving.) A wake up call of the zombie kind provokes havoc and panic all over the place. A small group of escapees take refuge in the local mall waiting to be rescued, only to discover they are on their own. Knowing that they cannot hold out there forever, they work on a plan to leave their prison and take a chance they will find a place uninhabited by the plague-infested corpses. The special effects were superb, and Zombie lovers will be totally satisfied. Even I, totally faint of heart when it comes to blood and guts, made it through this movie, so it wasn't that bad. Rating 3 for zombie fans.
Starring: Val Kilmer, Ed O'Neill, William H. Macy, Kristen Bell, Johnny Messner, Tia Texada The daughter of a government official is missing and reported dead by the media. Conspiracy is alive and well, covering up that she is alive. Special opps is called out to find her and bring her home. Spartan is a political thriller that lacks information in the beginning, and fails to enlist an interest for the rest of the movie. I said, "What?" for much of the movie. I was unimpressed and disappointed with such a fabulous cast. See it and make up your own mind. Rating 2
STARSKY & HUTCH - PG-13 Starring: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Snoop Dogg, Will Farrell, Carmen Electra Bringing a lighter side to some of our favorite characters from the past, Starsky (Stiller), Hutch (Wilson), and Huggy Bear (Dogg), are at it again, cracking down on crime and making the world a safer place. Costuming and a beautiful 1974 Ford Torino hot rod makes the film believable for that decade, and brings back memories of a simpler time, even for crime. This was a delightful film. Two thumbs up to the very talented Stiller and Wilson for doing it right. Rating 3

Dutton Not only is Mort Rainey (Depp) struggling through a difficult divorce, but he is being stalked by a man who claims he stole his story, and now is demanding that Rainey change the ending for him. Living out in the woods can be a peaceful place for a creative writer, but also a death trap without any help in sight. The police are enlisted as protection, but things take a turn for the worse when people start coming up dead. I loved this movie. Secret Window kept me guessing to the very end. Can you guess "Who Dunnit" before the end? I bet not. Rating 4
