A local community event, Fishhawk Summer Family Fest, hosted by the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce at Palmetto Club on July 22nd proved that Brandon vendors are involved in their community. Every year The Community Roundtable organizes the Father of the Year essay contest. This year fourth grader Holly Browder’s essay won first place.

I

have watched my friend’s son grow up through the years participating on baseball, football, and basketball teams, but never with a passion. He would give his all during the practices and games, but they couldn’t get him to care about practicing on his own time at home. He was a very smart boy and did well in school, but it was obvious that he wasn’t going to grow up to be an athlete.

Ivan F. Ackerman, M.D.,F.A.C.P, F.C.C.P. Brandon, Plant City, Tampa

“I would recommend Sunshine State to anyone in the community.” Dr. Ackerman has practiced medicine in the area for over 23 years and has offices in Brandon, Plant City and Tampa. He chose Sunshine State for his business and personal banking. “I would recommend Sunshine State to anyone in the community. They are personable, professional and competitive. I have personally recommended them to friends and associates. They are truly customer-oriented and that makes the difference.”

- Ivan F. Ackerman, MD

If you’re a business owner who’s become lost in the “bigbank shuffle”, come talk to us. We have the services, the people and strategies to help you grow and succeed. Just call or visit our office nearest you today.

When he was 12, he was introduced to the trumpet. Suddenly, he cared. He was practicing every single day after school and immediately became first chair in his school’s band. When he got to high school, his passion and skill only escalated. He has traveled all over the state of Florida, and even out of state, participating in different honor bands and orchestras. For all four years of high school, he was completely selfdisciplined, practicing after school every day for three hours. Inside the classroom was not the time to develop as an individual, that had to occur in his personal time and during his one-on-one lessons. Fast-forward six years after he picked up a trumpet for the first time. He was offered two full ride scholarships to the music schools at LSU and Stetson, both competitive programs. This month he is moving to Deland to begin a five year rigorous double major in music education. The rest of his life will revolve around music because someone introduced him to the arts at a young age. Neither of his parents are musicians, so it is a skill he never would have picked up at home. Unfortunately, our society does not encourage investing our children into the arts as much as it does athletics and academics. It’s such a vital part of our culture, but it’s usually up to the children to discover this passion on their own and hopefully have the support of their families to pursue it. Our cover and spotlight this month is Lisa Rodriquez, Brandon’s new Honorary Mayor and marketing director for Center Place. Center Place is a non-profit organization dedicated to the arts. Lisa ran for honorary mayor so she could raise money for Center Place, whose funds have been hurting during the recession. Some of the programs this money will go to will help fund children’s programs such as live theatre and art classes. This is a staple for our community that we cannot take lightly. It’s so important to get our children involved in the arts so they may discover their talents. Read our interview with Lisa to find out more about the honorary race and to discover what a dynamic woman she is. Having been born and raised in Brandon, her passion for this community is stronger than most. Her leadership over the next year will reap many rewards for Brandon.

Big Belly Burgers

Hosts Successful Fundraiser for Fallen TPD Officers

Written By: Cheryl Johnston

The folks who dine at Big Belly Burgers in Brandon have big hearts when the community has a need. Such was the case on July 10 when the restaurant hosted a fundraiser organized by Tampa’s Steele Swine Chapter of the Renegade Pigs Motorcycle Club (present and retired law enforcement and firefighters) to benefit the families of slain Tampa Police Department officers, David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab. According to Big Belly Burgers co-owner, Terry Haley, approximately $20,000 has been collected so far. He said, “The community’s involvement and response was overwhelming.” Anyone wishing to donate can drop off cash

or checks at the restaurant located at 109 W. Bloomingdale Avenue until July 31st. The money will be divided between the two surviving spouses. The Steele Swine Chapter supports charitable causes in the community. Their primary charity is The Lynn Sowers Memorial Foundation which was established after Sowers’ death several years ago to assist law enforcement families in need. Haley said, “We always hear of the close-knit fraternity of law enforcement officers, but this event proved it to me. One couple drove over from Cocoa to show their support.” More than 1,000 generous people attended the fundraiser to enjoy good food, friendly conversation, a chance to dunk-a-cop and to

pitch a few burger beanbags in the popular “cornhole” toss games. Raffle ticket sales and a 50/50 drawing boosted the collection total. Since opening in May of 2009, business at Big Belly Burgers has been booming, so much so that an expansion is in progress. They serve an average of 275-300 customers each day for lunch and dinner and were recently voted “Brandon’s Best Burgers”. It’s a great place to drop off your donation and enjoy some delicious food in a family friendly atmosphere. The Tampa Police Department maintains the Fallen Officers’ Memorial Fund to help officers’ families. Checks should be made out to Fallen Officers’ Memorial Fund (specify Officers Kocab & Curtis, if you wish), and mailed to c/o The Tampa Police Memorial

* Checks payable to Tampa Police Memorial Fund, Inc. are being accepted at Guest Services, near Macy’s. * Donate online at https://www. btlsfoundation.org/index.php to the Bubba The Love Sponge Foundation for its contribution to the Curtis and Kocab families. * The Gold Shield Foundation also accepts donations to help all families of fallen officers and firefighters. Visit www. goldshieldfoundation.com for more information. T-Shirts in memory of officers Curtis and Kocab are available for $12 each at: Clear Channel Radio studio in South Tampa or Online New Balance retail stores – Westshore Plaza and Carrollwood locations Tampa Police Department Headquarters – 411 N. Vendors pack into the main hall of the Palmetto Club.

he FishHawk community enjoyed a large, highly organized event hosted by the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce at the Palmetto Club on Thursday the 22nd.

Vendors from the FishHawk and surrounding areas came out to advertise and give away product samples. Restaurants and businesses attended, including Chik-fil-A at Lake Brandon Village, Costco Wholesale, GFS Marketplace and Planet Smoothie. GrillSmith was there to provide discount coupons. The manager, Kim, said of the successful event, “It’s great, We’ve got lots of exposure to customers we’ve never had.” GrillSmith is located in the Brandon Town Center. Their expansive menu specializes in grilled entrees featuring steak, chicken, and fish. (GrillSmith.com) Christian of the Catering Company served beverages. The Catering Company is a versatile business designed to help people host any sort of event that one might like. “We cater for weddings, lunches, dinner, anything.” said Christian. The company delivers sandwiches, salads, drinks and desserts, among just about anything else. (www.CateringBrandon.com) Aimee and Vicki of Hillsboro Bank also

commented about how productive the event was: “It’s awesome - good that neighbors are networking and finding out about each other.” Aimee described how Hillsboro Bank is a community bank and how they teach kids about proper banking. (www. hillsborobank.com). Open Arms Early Childhood Center is a Christian organization that watches children as young as 6-weeks-old in a “loving and safe environment,” as advertised. (LambofGodLithia.org) Children had fun with a Bounce House in the courtyard area, along with Games2U, a portable video gaming experience that allows people to play video games from TV’s imbeded into the side of a van. Also for kids there were hands-on activities from Mad Science of Tampa Bay and face painting by YMCA staffers. Conveniently, this allowed parents to check out the local business displays inside the club room. The event also hosted a raffle. Visitors could bring school supplies to donate to the YMCA outreach and receive free raffle tickets. The proceeds from the raffle benefited Operation Patriot. Local » Focus a fourth grade student at Boyette Springs Elementary. She thinks her dad is just an all around nice father because of how hard he works, and yet he still finds time to play with her. Holly’s mom, Shelly Browder said, “Holly put in her essay that she wanted her dad to win so she could see the smile on his face.” Shelly describes her daughter as having a BIG imagination. Holly’s brief essay won her and her dad a $30 gift basket donated by Beef ’O’Brady’s, two Rays tickets donated by The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce, a $25 Family Meal Package donated by ChickFil-A, a $195 family portrait donated by Messerli Photography, a round of golf for four donated by Buckhorn Springs Country Club, and two games, shoe rental, and pizza for a family of four donated by Brandon Crossroads Bowl. Mark Browder was not the only father acknowledged. The Second Place winner, Cristina Delvescovo shows pride in her father, Arthur. As a fourth grader at Boyette Springs Elementary, Cristina’s awareness of the economy is recognized as she shows appreciation and respect to how her dad still made people happy with his jokes, even after he lost his job. Cristina expresses no doubt as to how her dad is always there for her even in the worst of times. Arthur’s prizes included two tickets to the Rays vs. Red Sox game donated by The Greater Chamber of Commerce, a $15 gift certificate donated by Chic-Fil-A, a $10 gift certificate donated by Sweet Tomatoes, and a framed copy of their child’s entry.

The Third Place winner was Caitlyn Rothenbush, daughter of Dan Rothenbush. Caitlyn is a third grader at Symmes Elementary School. The reason Dan is Caitlyn’s hero is “. . because he’s always there to pick me up and dust me off,” which comes directly from Caitlyn’s essay. Even though Dan lives a busy life as he works at Verizon, he still finds time to spend time with his little girl. athers do not go unrecognized in the Brandon community. For the past ten years, Vice President Janine Nickerson of The Community Roundtable has been involved in organizing the Father of the Year essay contest. Every year The Community Roundtable, an

organization that assists Greater Brandon area charities, accepts donations for the prizes offered to students who write to nominate their dads. Children are notified of the competition through flyers delivered to public and private schools in the area. This year approximately 200 students in grades three through five participated in the contest.

According to Nickerson, there are many different reasons why children think their dad should win. She explained one in particular: “I remember one child put their father should be Father of the Year because their dad flew planes in the Civil War.” This year’s Father of the Year is none other than Holly Browder’s dad, Mark. The Community Roundtable gives the opportunity every year for a child to express why their dad should be Father of the Year, because nothing encourages adults more than to learn of the deep impressions parents can make on their children, who will build the future. Lisa Rodriguez Center Place marketing director named Brandon’s Honorary Mayor Written By: Lou Ricca Mrs. Rodriguez: My free time is pretty much devoted to community service. When I get the opportunity, I enjoy crafts and spending time at the beach. I also own and operate a promotional products business called Adco Agency. Sandy and I opened the business in 1986, and I’ve continued to grow the business by providing our customers that extra personal service that sets us apart. We sell any kind of printed goods, from executive gifts to giveaways to help businesses promote themselves. FOCUS: How did you get involved with Center Place?

FOCUS: How long have you lived in Brandon? Mrs. Rodriguez: I grew up here and am a proud graduate of Brandon High School, class of ’75 and Hillsborough Community College. My family moved here from North Carolina in the summer of 1968, and I’ve been here ever since. When we first moved here, there wasn’t a whole lot here, but it was a fun place to grow up because it was very much a small town. As kids, my sisters and I could ride our bikes anywhere, even to Lithia Springs Park and back. You certainly couldn’t do that now.

FOCUS: What has kept you in Brandon? Mrs. Rodriguez: I’ve never really ventured far past this community. As I grew up, so did Brandon. Even with all the growth that I’ve seen here, we have retained the small town atmosphere that I enjoyed as a kid. Through the years, I’ve made long-lasting friendships, plus my mother and sisters live here as well. My sister, Sue McElligott, really helped me out a great deal with my mayoral campaign. My daughter, Kaia, was there every step of the way, too! FOCUS: What do you do in your free time?

Mrs. Rodriguez: I’m the current marketing director for Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association. My involvement spans back to 1979, when we first opened the doors of the “Brandon Cultural Center” (the original name). My late husband, Sandy, served on the first board of directors, and we volunteered as a team for years, supporting and raising monies for the art programs. In the late 80’s, the center joined forces with the county library system to build the current facility. Sandy and I helped open the doors of the new facility in 1991. My dear friend, the late Pat Odiorne, had a vision for the center to have a gift shop where we could sell local artist’s works. So, with Pat’s leadership, a handful of us volunteers created it, and today it’s called “Pat’s Corner”, in her honor. It’s a great place to buy a unique gift for someone special. I served on the board for several terms, serving as President in 1994. Late that year, I lost Sandy to cancer, and the county rededicated the facility in his honor, “The Sandy Rodriguez Center”.

It’s been a part of my life since the late ‘70s, and it’s near and dear to my heart. The “Arts” opens new doors for children and helps them see the world in another light. FOCUS: What do you do there now? Mrs. Rodriguez: After being involved for years, the center approached me about a part-time marketing position as director, and I accepted. It’s not always easy to raise money for art. In tough times, people tend to give money to organizations that meet basic needs, like food and shelter. Arts programs can be much further down on the totem pole. That’s one of the reasons why I decided to participate in the mayor’s race this year. The money we raised will go to the center’s general fund and be used to help fund children’s programs, such as live theatre and arts classes. We try to keep our classes and events at a reasonable cost so more people can utilize the center, but that additional funding has to come from somewhere. We have a very small staff, so I help with the everyday operations of the center, printed materials, grant writing, and whatever else our Executive Director Dawn Galia needs help with. I tend to focus on special events and fundraisers for the center. I do outreach within the community to promote our facility and what we can offer to families in the area. I currently serve on the Greater Brandon Arts Council which partners with Center Place on special events. FOCUS: Why did you decide to run for mayor? Mrs. Rodriguez: I’ve worked with many mayoral candidates over the years, going

spotlight» Lisa Rodriguez way back to when Carol Todd ran in the 70’s. Because of that experience, I sort of knew what I was getting into. However, it’s one thing to be involved on a committee or in a support role; it’s a whole other matter when you’re the one running. One recent mayor, Tammy Holmberg, ran for mayor, and she was on the board at Center Place. She asked me to serve as her campaign manager, and I agreed. When this year came around and with the state of the economy and arts funding, the board was thinking about ways to raise money. Attorney Lee Elam had been asking me to run for mayor for years, and so I finally agreed to do it. Of course, I called Tammy and asked if she’d return my favor and be my campaign manager, and she agreed. We brought the team on her campaign back together, and we dove into the race. It was fun, and a lot of work because it’s so condensed into one month of fundraising. I wanted to keep it simple with two or three fundraising events, but we ended up doing eight. We just kept going, and it was very successful. Of course, I was thrilled because Center Place won too. Dawn was right there with me, every step of the way as my treasurer and she went above and beyond the call of duty to keep us all on the same page. I had a wonderful committee of dedicated volunteers, and that’s what it takes. I could not have done it without them!

share that history with newcomers to the area. We have some great activities for families and great community service organizations. We’re no longer a tiny little town, but you still sense that small town atmosphere. We’ve got to keep that alive. People want to move somewhere that has a sense of place, that isn’t like all the others. I also would like to work on preserving our history. There’s no real place to store all of the local history in this area. Our history is living in the garages of long-time residents that are still with us. It would be neat to have a place where we could store all of this information. That’s something I would like to get started, time permitting, because it needs to be done. FOCUS: Is there anything you’d like to say to the community? Mrs. Rodriguez: I certainly want to thank everyone who helped out with the mayor’s race, whether it was for me or the other two candidates. It shows the heart of this community. All three candidates combined raised more than $54,000 to put back in the community. That’s a lot of money. The charities the three of us supported really came out the winners. I want to thank everyone who came out to the events and supported any of us one way or the other. Without you, we couldn’t have done this.

FOCUS: What are your responsibilities as mayor? Mrs. Rodriguez: It’s an honorary position which involves as much time as you’re willing or able to put into it. You’re out in the community, and you’re promoting Brandon everywhere you go. The chamber calls on you to participate in grand openings and ribbon cuttings for new businesses. I’ll be carrying the torch for Brandon as a board member for “The Community Roundtable” the sponsoring organization of the Mayor’s Race and the 4th of July Parade. FOCUS: Do you have any particular goals? Mrs. Rodriguez: I’m looking forward to my year of service. It’s a great opportunity to promote and enhance the wonderful community that I live and work in. We’re an unincorporated area of the county, and I think a lot of people don’t get what Brandon is all about. I want to help change that perception if possible. Sometimes I think we are only looked at as a bedroom community to Tampa; but we have a lot of history here and I would like to help FOCUS Magazine brandon august 2010

in Plant City. Recently, through extensive research of national fitness industry trends, he made the decision to purchase the Fitness For 10 Florida rights and change the business model and names of both his Brandon and Plant City clubs. Obviously, based on customer response, this was the right move at the right time. Donofrio wanted to offer customers more fitness potential for less money, so he purchased the Florida area from Nevada founder Steve Main, a successful health club entrepreneur and accomplished writer. Because of his expertise, Donofrio has also been appointed to develop Fitness For 10 markets in the southeastern states.

Fitness for 10 Brandon also offers 24-houraccess. *Premier members also receive free tanning.

Donofrio says, “Fitness for 10 is just a good honest value for your health club dollar with no huge up-front fees, no gimmicks, no hidden costs, and no pressure. We believe getting in shape shouldn’t be expensive.”

According to Donofrio, “Customers desire the best results in the least amount of time which comes from strength training and cardio machines. His clubs’ vast array of equipment includes elliptical machines, treadmills, Lifecycles, Stairmasters, and recumbent bikes for cardiovascular workouts. Strength training is accomplished through free weights and circuit training through resistance machines. Professional training and nutritional counseling are offered for additional fees.

When selecting a health club, potential members evaluate services provided, cleanliness, price, convenience and staff friendliness. Statistics substantiate that Fitness For 10 clubs offer more of what the masses want and need, without the sales pressure. Members choose to buy instead of being sold.

Our Mission Statement At Fitness For 10, we believe:

• Fitness does not have to be expensive. • Price of a membership does not determine the quality of a health club • Health clubs should be well equipped, friendly and clean. • A health club should provide members with a positive and helpful environment. • People have the power and determination to reach their fitness goals. • Our members’ fitness experience should be exactly what they want it to be. • By providing more for less to our customers we will have a distinct advantage over the competition and therefore be extremely profitable.

personal fitness level. Often, members of other clubs also join Fitness For 10 since it’s so economical and provides them with a nice change of pace. The typical first impression when meeting the entrepreneurial Donofrio is, “In regards to health and fitness, this man knows what he’s doing.” Known as “Cyborg,” during his professional wrestling days stands 6’5” and weighs 290 lbs. He is also known for his amateur accomplishments as a four time All-American in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling. Accomplishing those levels of athleticism allowed Donofrio to travel the world, stay in palaces of sheiks, associate with dignitaries and celebrities, visit Machu Picchu in Peru and even swim in the Red Sea. But it wasn’t until age 34 that he turned professional and experienced such a life. Donofrio grew up in Pennsylvania with seven siblings and recalls, “Life was tough financially.” He remembers his first car, a 1969 Cadillac, about which he says, “That old clunker took me to the prom but not before drinking two quarts of oil and leaving oil stains on my tux.” By the time the sibling hand-me-down clothing reached him, they were embarrassingly worn and not exactly tailored for his physique. At a young age his start in the athletic industry came through YMCA employment. He performed janitorial duties first and then pursued his real passion as a personal trainer. At age 20, he moved to Atlanta to work for

American Fitness Centers. Within five years he was an Area Supervisor over 9 clubs with a six-figure income. In 1987, ready for a new challenge, Donofrio established The Athletic Club (now Fitness for 10) in Brandon. “Back then”, he says, “Brandon was nothing but cow pastures and a two lane road known as Highway 60.” Now, 23 years later, he owns two highly successful fitness clubs and has had an exceptional wrestling career during which he completed several world tours. He speaks with pride of his 14-year marriage to his beautiful wife Katrina and of his 13-year-old son Dalton, who works with Donofrio at the clubs. He also believes in serving the community. For six years he volunteered as a wrestling coach at Brandon High School. Presently he officiates with USA Wrestling and the Florida High School Athletic Association. With his charismatic personality and endless energy, Donofrio has inspired countless athletes and thousands of members through his clubs. He believes people have the power to reach their fitness goals once they determine to make the effort. This is your time. Change your body and keep your change by joining Fitness for 10 today. We take repossessions from financial institutions and offer them at the best price possible to consumers. Banks and Credit Unions don’t want to be in the car business and consumers want great selection and value.

MATTHEWS: We are taking a problematic situation for the Credit Union or Bank, and turning it into a positive for them and the car buyer. FOCUS: So it is a win-win? The Credit Union recovers the asset while consumers get a price advantage on a great vehicle? FARMER: Exactly! Unfortunately, repossessions are a fact of life in the marketplace. Financial Institutions need to recover autos that are unpaid and try to

recoup, at the minimum, the unpaid loan amount of the vehicle. MATTHEWS: That means consumers might find a car at a much lower price than they would at a traditional car lot. Think of it as “short selling” of autos! FOCUS: So you make money for the Credit Union while saving money for the consumer? FARMER: That is the goal. There’s a radio station that claims that it’s the NEW (fill in the blank). Problem is, it’s been the NEW for the last four years!

this exact moment… not the NOW that means I’m taking a breath or “here’s what’s coming up next”. I don’t remember when we started using that phrase in news just that all of us did. So, nearly every newscast or radio show on planet earth tends to start with the phrase:….. begins NOW! I guess we are injecting a sense of urgency in what we are talking about. Still, if we are here every day at the same time, as dependable as the summer heat in Florida, why do we even need to say NOW?

It’s NEW. It’s NOW. Or is it? Written By: Al Reuchel

My article begins…. NOW! And, it’s NEW! And just in case you didn’t read it the first time… this commentary is NEW! So I’m hoping since I’ve used the two magic words in media today that more of you will read this commentary…NOW!

O

n the one hand, I get it. Media is trying to create a sense of urgency and a sense that the information we are bringing you is NEW. I take it that the word smiths and the genius consultants have determined using these words will increase ratings and readership. Please tell me there is some empirical data that supports that claim. Maybe they think if we say NOW people won’t get up and go to the bathroom or change the dial. If we say something is NEW people will hang in there through the commercial break because they can’t stand to hear something that’s old.

22

august 2010 thefocusmagazine.com

Take for example the radio stations in our market. There’s a radio station that claims that it’s the NEW (fill in the blank). Problem is, it’s been the NEW for the last four years! And just as soon as you say something is new it’s already old because you’ve just heard or read it. Some would carry that argument to the extreme and claim there is no such thing as NEW. Do these people think we are that dumb that we don’t notice when NEW isn’t new? I even heard a radio guru, whose name will go unmentioned, that a certain large radio chain with many frequencies has a business plan that calls for stations to change

formats every so often just to be able to call them NEW. So are they really new or just kind of new to that frequency on your dial? It’s like when you go to E-Bay or some other website that rates products by their price. You can’t believe there could be such a price difference until you see the words: like NEW. Today, on the internet, like NEW can mean refurbished, which translates into something was wrong with the item but we fixed it and it’s just like NEW. There’s that word again. Now, let’s talk about NOW meaning: at

Years ago, when I worked in St. Louis I asked a big shot at AnheuserBusch why they decided to use the words Lite Beer when the actual calorie count on the product was, at that time, only about 5 percent less than normal beer. It was simple. Listeners could determine in their own minds what Lite meant to them. And their research showed that when folks heard the word Lite they automatically thought of a product that wouldn’t make them fat. They couldn’t come right out and tell folks..”hey, this beer will make your skinny” because drinking any beer will increase your calorie count. So they toss that word out there and let your mind do the rest. Perhaps that’s what the media is doing right NOW: letting your mind convince you what happens over the next 10, 15 or 20 minutes is so important… if you missing it…. your life will somehow be diminished. No it won’t . Sure, I want you to watch and read but do it because YOU want to and not because something is NEW or just because it begins…. Right NOW! That’s why this NEW commentary ends…… NOW!

It was very smooth and had an appropriate character rendering it quite sippable. Then, as included with every meal came better-than-average Japanese clear onion soup (mushrooms, fried onions, and scallions in beef broth) along with a garden salad topped with Kobé’s award-winning house dressing, which is also sold by the bottle. An elaborate grill show normally given to dinnertime patrons even included our master chef purposely lighting his hand on fire. We sampled the crab cake as an appetizer -- a strong, but not conclusive contender for the best part of the meal. district manager, Mr. Kenny Chin, along with his district chef Ichiban, affectionately nicknamed “Number One,” who developed the Kobé menu. We sat with Mr. Chin to eat and learned why their lunch clientele is so large, despite the relatively short time ago their Brandon location opened. “Lunch here takes about 30 minutes,” he explained, noting how his chefs time themselves for maximum efficiency to quickly serve the 200-250 guests per afternoon. “The cook

For lunch we sampled the lobster (both tail and claw is served), scallops, and sirloin steak over fried rice. Mr. Chin was especially proud of the quality of the meats, and well justified. If you want lobster, let these chefs make it for you- big chunks of claw and tail meat, all tender and peppered with exotic seasoning. Next to the lobster were the scallops -large, very tender, and seared by our cheftrainer on both sides to trap the juices in. The sirloin is touted as “the caviar of meats” from the restaurant’s website (www. kobesteakhouse.com) and the Angus Certified quality, aged 40 days, is evident in the natural flavor of the beef itself, even before any of the creamy and unique house sauces are added to it. The tenderness of

the beef creates an opportunity for all of the juice in each bite to hit the taste buds quickly. For dessert we had fried ice cream. The shell was coconutty and sweet, and it was fun digging into it to get to the ice cream underneath. Just about everything at Kobé is innovative, setting them apart from other Hibachi restaurants to some degree, but the mixed drinks at Kobé deserve an extra mention. The Mai Tai and Kobé Peach are both fruity, the latter a definite favorite. It tastes tropical and tart and makes an extremely blatant and fun attempt to taste like candy. The trump card of the Kobe mixed drink menu, though, is the exclusive “Scorpion Flaming Volcano”. The blend is of Bacardi Rum, Bombay Gin, Amaretto, Apricot brandy, fresh orange juice, and a splash of grenadine. It is mixed with ice and filled inside of a huge special bowl with an island in the middle. The chef then lights the drink on fire and you and your companions can celebrate (it’s huge) and be happy. It’s very strong with plenty to go around. “Nobody at Kobé leaves hungry,” said Mr. Chin, emphasizing Kobé’s wish to build customer loyalty. An awesome guarantee -- if you are still hungry, the chef will make you more fried rice, or noodles, or both if you prefer. Arigato.
