but also learning things I don’t care about, like that they “checked in” at the grocery store. It’s actually quite amazing to watch my past and present relationships fill my newsfeed. Recently someone from my high school created an event on Facebook to invite all the people still living in the Tampa Bay area to get together one evening. She said to leave an update on the wall about what you’re doing with your life now. It was actually quite fascinating how the event page turned into dialogue between a hundred or so people catching up on the last eighteen years. Several people wrote about how they went to medical school and are now practicing in a particular area of medicine, yet no two were the same. I even heard about areas of medicine I didn’t now people specialized in. On a day-to-day basis we are aware of the general practitioners, and maybe the OBGYN’s. Surgeons tend to be recognized for their heroic transplants we hear about changing people’s lives. However, there are so many physicians behind the scenes pursuing their passion who never get recognized. It was amazing to read about my past friends and acquaintances who found something they believed in so passionately that they went through medical school and even more advanced study behind that, to devote their lives to the science of improving people’s lives. This month we recognize those physicians in our community who do a superb job of taking care of their patients, following their passion, giving their all, and yet may fall in the shadows of the public eye. The Chamber of Commerce started a program called the Successful Doctor’s Awards to open the invitation to the community to nominate the doctors in their lives who are leaving an impact. Recently, we announced the finalists and winner of this prestigious award. Thank you to these physicians who realized many years ago that they wanted to devote their time on earth to improving our quality of life.

Adventure four Paintball

t the beginning of the year, the Focu s Magazine staff set out a mission. Our goal was to take on 11 adventures in 2011. There were man y people on our staff who had different fears, or had never challenged themselves to try somethin g outside of their comfort zone. Our first adventure was racing go-karts, where DeDe Floyd smoked ever yone , including former pro motocross racer, Mike, her husband. In February we paid a visit to Boing, an indoor trampoline facility and were shocked athow in less than one hour of jumping we barely had enou gh energy to stand. Early one morning in March, we loaded up the truck and drove to the bay for som e offshore fishing to catch some sharks. This month, we strapped on protectio n and hit the fields with loaded guns , paintball guns that is. Action Paintball warmly welcomed us to their facility in Winter Haven. Many on our staff had never played paintball before, so they went over all the rules and gave the safety instructions. We were divided into two teams and sent to the field. Some of the staff brought their children so we had players that ranged from 10 years old to their forties. The funny thing is, once that mask is on, ever yone is equally threatening.

Our team huddled up and discussed some quick strategy, then went to the starting point and waited for the cue. When the ref yelled go, we raced to our barracks to find prot ection behind whatever we could find. Some people stayed behi nd to guard the back, while others offen sively tried to move forward to take out the opponents. Ang el was the first one out and then sudd enly the players started trickling away one by one. Mike Floyd, a member of the black team shouted “They’re all out except for Seth. He’s hiding in the back.” There were four black players and Seth was the only green one left. Seth is Angel’s 13-year-old son, who ever yone thought of as the shy quiet kid. It seemed obvious who was going to attain the first victory.

Just goes to show you that with som e good strategy and good aim, a 4:1 ratio doesn’t mean you’ve lost. Ever yone was caught off guard by Seth ’s skill and he was one of the strongest players on the field all day. We played several more games and the teams ended up tying by the day’s end. Two victories for each side. Slap wore out of energy and with a few bruises on our bodies, we loaded up the cars and headed home.

But Seth was hidden well and before you knew it, Seth had hit both Mike and Tony. The only members left on the black team were Sophia Hyde and Zane Floyd, Mike’s 10-year-old son. They were hiding together in a pit in the very back of their side, just Iike Seth was doing. The paintballs were flying from one side of the field to the other, each player trying to stay hidden but also fire their opponent. Seth nailed Sophia in the center of the goggles on her helmet. Clean shot to the face and the green paint covered her mask—ou t of the game she went. It was down to Seth and Zane, the youngest members on the field. As soon as Zane came up to get a shot in, Seth nailed him and the game was over.

Center Place Presents 27th Annual Arts Gala O Written By: Amanda Molinaro

n April 9, Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association of Brandon held their 27th Annual Arts Gala at the lavish Regent of Winthrop. This year’s theme was “Arti Gras,” and all of Brandon’s who’s who of business, socialites, and Center Place members came decked out in Carnival attire, ready to party hardy Mardi Gras style; all in the name of the arts, of course. Many Brandonites may already be familiar with Center Place. Its headquarters, also known as the Discovery Zone, is located in the same building as the Brandon Regional Library. This non-profit organization strives for community involvement in the fine arts. Center Place hosts classes and activities for all ages in a wide range of modes of artistic expression. These include drawing and painting, pottery and ceramic working, storytelling and writing, and dance and

vaudeville routine (check out their Circus Skills class being offered in August).

Discovery Zone is also home to the Mook Gallery, which displays the works of Brandon’s up-and-coming artists like last month’s feature, the Eastern Hillsborough high school art exhibit. Perhaps Center Place’s best known endeavor is the Children’s Theater troupe, which has a production of The Three Little Pigs slated for May. Each year Center Place hosts an art gala fundraiser. Many local businesses, institutions and corporations donate items and packages to be auctioned away at the gala. This year, Center Place collected approximately 650 items to be sold at the silent auction. Some of the pieces included original artwork produced by Center Place members, such as oil paintings of landscapes, mixed media sculptures, and handcrafted jewelry. Amongst the baskets donated by

businesses there were personal pampering packages at local spas and hair salons, gourmet chocolates and candies, wine/ fine liquor packages, and passes for comedy clubs, amusement parks, and other Florida diversions. The inside of the Regent was decorated to make attendees feel like they were strolling along the rues of New Orleans. A saxophone and keyboard duet played gentle, meandering jazz improvisations while guests mingled around the display tables and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and wines served by the Regent’s wait staff. Everyone was encouraged to dress in festive attire, circa a 1920s Mardi Gras celebration. Women wore elegant flapper gowns and feathered masks while the men dressed like Creole gents. After an hour of conversation and perusing the basket display tables, attendees sat down to their sumptuous meals. Participation in the live auction bidding was

great. Prizes included donations from the Tampa Bay Lightning, Tradewinds Resort on St. Pete Beach, and Jaguar of Tampa. While the final funds raised amount is still being tallied, Center Place is confident that the citizens of Brandon donated over $40,000 to their organization. Center Place extends its thanks to all those businesses that donated this year and also to everyone who attended or was involved in this year’s gala. Local » Focus Easter Bunny took a bit longer. The line extended from deep inside the community building well out into the front parking area. All children waited patiently in line while munching cookies shaped like very large eggs and guzzling juice from small kid-sized cartons. Many families look forward to this annual event, calling Hawthorne Village’s office as early as January to inquire as to whether the event is on the schedule again, shared Bramble. Two families in particular have turned this into a tradition they haven’t missed since their oldest children were small. Regina Watkins and Janice Tucker met years ago when they lived in the same apartment complex. Regina has seven children and Janice five. With so many children between them, the best friends look for free community events to make it affordable to do things together. Janice told Regina about the Hawthorne Village Easter Egg Hunt years ago, and they haven’t missed it since. Hawthorne Village is a retirement community on Lumsden Road near Kings Avenue. The entire Hawthorne Village community consists of three separate facilities. Each facility specializes in a certain aspect of retirement living. Combined, this

is known as “a continuing care retirement community.” Probably the most impressive part of Hawthorne Village Retirement Community is the heart for their residents as well as their neighbors. Executive Director Vernon Zeger may have been more excited about the event than the kids. “It’s going to be a blast!” he exclaimed a few weeks ago when Focus asked about the event. Zeger’s youthful attitude is contagious and was reflected in the smiles and positive attitudes of everyone at the event, from the parking volunteers to the bunny in the community building, who, by the way, remained quite enthusiastic while the long line of excited kids each had their turn shying away, and then tentatively agreeing to pose with him. Zeger was equally excited about Hawthorne Village’s semi-annual plant sale, which began immediately after the egg hunt. All plants and herbs are grown in the HV off campus greenhouse, and sold for one dollar each. If you missed this spring’s event, check out the fall festival and plant sale later this year. In its 10th year, the event drew hundreds of families from the local community, including children and grandchildren of the retirement home’s residents and employees.

Each age group will participate in swimming, biking, and running. The youngest group (6-8 year olds) will swim 50 meters, bike 2 miles, and run a quarter-mile. The middle group (9-11 year olds) will swim 150 meters, bike 4 miles, and run 1 mile, and the oldest group (12- 14 year olds) will swim 300 meters, bike 8.5 miles, and run 2 miles.

For the last two years the Wallace Reed family has been looking for a triathlon club for kids, when a few months ago they met

Tri4Jesus has been busy raising funds to help offset the cost of this race. They have hosted several yard sales. On April 9, 2011, they hosted a race at Stern Park. They raced to see how many laps they could walk or run in 45 minutes. Each racer had sponsors who pledge a certain amount per lap. Prizes were awarded to the most laps in the least amount of time for each group. They were divided into groups: 4-6 year olds, 7-9 year olds, 10- 13 year olds, and the top male and female adult racers. Forty-nine participants raised $948. While deciding on how to raise funds for

the race, Addie Hobbs, 10) wanted to donate part of what they earned to the Duncan Family, which will be approximately $600. The Duncans, (a home school family with 8 children, recently lost their father Brian to a heart attack on November 27, 2010. Brian had become ill a couple of years ago with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which left him partially paralyzed and unable to provide for his family. As a result the family lost their home. Last August they were able to move into a home that will eventually be demolished. The deal was they had to make repairs and clean it up. The family and friends worked hard to make it livable and safe. This though is only a temporary fix. The Brandon community has been coming together to help raise $150,000 by December 2011. Businesses, families, churches, and local groups like Tri4Jesus are coming together to help make this happen. his month Focus Brandon shines the spotlight on Dr. Natalie Carr and Dr. Michael A. Hess, two young and civic-minded specialty dentists who are passionate about their work of improving smiles. Both doctors assume leadership roles in numerous professional associations and are active in civic organizations for charitable causes. After having gained experience with other dental offices since 1999, Dr. Carr, DMD, MS established Tampa’s newest pediatric dentistry practice at 11936 Boyette Road in Riverview this past August. She developed a passion for working with children’s dental health following volunteer and disaster relief work in Peru, Chicago, and Tampa. Dr.Michael A. Hess, DMD, MS is an orthodontist for children, teens, and adults at 11970 Boyette Road in Riverview in the Boyette Executive Center. An online website visit is well worth the trip to explore this fun, innovative, and technologically advanced practice that also offers clients creature comforts such as a coffee bar, onsite spa, and game area. It’s no wonder Dr. Hess earned both the 2011 Successful Doctors Award and by popular vote, the People’s Choice Award in the dental category.

Spotlight» Drs. Natalie Carr and Michael Hess Focus: Thank you for this opportunity to know you. Let’s start with a little personal history. Describe your education and what brought you to the Brandon/Riverview area? Hess: Clearwater was my birthplace. After graduation from Lakeside Christian School in 1991, I earned a Doctorate of Dental Medicine and valedictorian honors at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. At the University of Michigan I earned a master’s degree in orthodontics. I decided on this area after visiting and driving through places like FishHawk Creek, and knew it was a great place for kids and perfect place for my work. Carr: I was born in Argentina, moved to Tennessee at age 3 and then to Apollo Beach at 11. I graduated from East Bay and it’s where my parents still live. In 2-1/2 years I earned a BA in Interdisciplinary Science in Chemistry from USF, then added four years of dental school at Northwesteren University in Chicago and finally, attended the University of Texas Houston for Pediatrics Training and a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry. I am a board certified pediatric dentist. After dental school I practiced in Texas four years before returning to Tampa, where I worked with Dental Health Group (now Great Expressions) for 8 years in 8 locations all over Tampa. I opened my practice in Riverview on August 13, 2010. Focus: How did you become involved in the orthodontic f ield? Hess: I found it to be very interesting and challenging. Carr: I have several aunts in Argentina that are pediatric dentists. I always loved their passion for the profession. I went to dental school not knowing if I would like to specialize but had experience volunteering at the Saturday Morning People’s Clinic at Northwestern University while in school. It was a volunteer clinic that treated pediatric patients pro bono. I began volunteering my freshman year and loved working with the children and found I was often asked to see the more challenging cases and was able to make a positive difference in experience of the children. I was then selected to go on a Pediatric Dentistry externship to Colorado to work at the Salud Community Health Clinics working with migrant children in

Colorado. I spent the summer between my junior and senior years at Northwestern working in Colorado with young children. This experience solidified my desire to work with this age group. Focus: Would you give us an overview of your practice’s personality and describe what sets you apart from others in your f ield?

Dentistry. Most Studies show the sooner you initiate your dental visits, the less likely you are to have cavities. Parents can floss children’s teeth as soon as they touch. Also, we review nutrition, oral hygiene and prevention of dental disease. How often you eat is probably more important than

We participate in many insurance plans and work to accommodate customers who need financing. Carr: Our mission is to practice evidence-based dentistry (the integration of best evidence with clinical judgment and expertise) implementing a philosophy based on a commitment to preventive dentistry and education. We aim to create a supportive and nurturing environment while providing safe, comfortable and quality dental treatment for children. We are a private practice that accepts most PPO insurance and Humana / Compbenefits HMO. We try to take the time to educate patients and their children on good dental habits to achieve a lifetime of good oral health. Focus: What advice can you offer to parents and patients about dental and orthodontic care, timing, affordability, etc. Hess: Though an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, there is an optimal time period to begin treatment. Beginning treatment at this time ensures the greatest result and the least amount of time and expense. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but vigilant examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment. Carr: We recommend that children be seen at one year of age, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Pediatric

Focus: What do you enjoy most about the work you do? Hess: Being able to make a difference in our patient’s lives and in their self-esteem. Carr: I love all aspects of dentistry. I enjoy working with the children, educating both children and parents, and providing quality care while trying to make treatment as safe, comfortable and fun as possible. Focus: Are there particular community service type projects or efforts you enjoy more than others? Hess: I love being active in the community and supporting our youth by sponsoring various team sports. Also, I really enjoy when I am invited to attend patients sporting meets.

So if the mother is prone to cavities, preventative things that can reduce the transmission of bacteria include using fluoride or antibacterial rinses, chewing xylitol gum, and not blowing on or tasting the child’s food Focus: How do you spend your time when you’re not working? Hess: I like going to the beach, lifting weights and playing sports. Carr: I have been very active in the dental society and am the immediate past president of the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the current president of the Hillsborough County Dental Association. I volunteer on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile doing dental screenings and emergency extractions about once a month. I also teach group fitness classes at local gyms including Body Pump( weight training) Body Flow (Tai Chi, Pilates and yoga) and Spinning (cycling). I’m also a member of Brandon 86 Rotary club, Brandon Chamber of Commerce and the Riverview Chamber of Commerce.

Carr: I have always enjoyed all kinds of community service, but I feel that my greatest impact to the community is in dentistry, whether it is in going to schools and teaching oral hygiene, volunteering to serve on a committee to improve access to care and dental education or actually volunteering in efforts to provide restorative dentistry. Focus: What do you enjoy most about the Brandon community? Hess: Sense of community in the area. It is very family-centered and great people live here. Carr: Although I have worked in many parts of Tampa, I’ve always preferred working in the Brandon area because I really enjoy the people in this community. Focus: Is there anyone you two would like to thank for your business success? Carr: Yes! Opening a new practice is a huge undertaking and I have been very lucky to f ind a wonderful staff that works hard and really cares about our great patients and their parents. Hess: I have a great team, too … nine ladies with more than 85 years experience combined who know how to make things run smoothly. And my patients - they’re the best!

The full-service, 147 room Embassy Suites has been open three years and sits on the same location as the former Celebration Station, according to Sales Manager Sarah Weiss. By fullservice, Weiss means there is something for everyone, literally - from the fitness center, pool and Jacuzzi to the 3000 square foot ballroom and full boardroom complete with modern A/V equipment. The facility’s highlight, however, is the atrium area that contains Mango’s Sunset Grill. Breakfast boasts of several different stations including one with a sous chef who creates specialty omelets by request. At lunch or dinner be sure to try at least one signature item, such as the pan-grilled Mango Grilled Salmon served over a bed
