Gibsonton’s Showman’s Club Hosts 2nd Annual South Shore Music Festival

His gentle country twang filled all corners of the grounds as families strolled through the festival’s attractions.

About a third of the grounds was dedicated to all inflatable rides: giant inflatable slides, bouncy castles, and “Water Ball Wars” attractions kept all festival goers diverted between musical acts. Water Ball Wars was a very unique attraction; it consisted of a shallow kiddy pool with a bubble-boy-esque sphere floating on top. Fair goers could climb inside and feel the sensation of walking on water in the bubble-boy sphere.

Throughout the day, several country and southern rock bands took the stage at hourly intervals keeping the festival rocking. The central bar, The Porta Party, kept rockstars entertained by serving guests a variety of mixed drinks and beer.

Food vendors were in abundance as well. There were several southern BBQ pits serving smoked sausages, pulled-pork sandwiches, and ribs along the paths, but the most novel food vendor, Ediblez on the Go, served homemade stuffed pepper soup and their signature walking taco. The walking taco utilizes an on-the-go, single serving Fritos or Doritos chip bag with seasoned taco meat and all the taco fixings to make a non-messy, delicious, portable snack. Local merchants like Linda Ross of Litha with Premier Accessories Group sold their wares behind the food vendors. Linda sell

The closing act of the SSMF was One Night Rodeo, the winners of this year’s Next Great American Country Star. They were a rockin’ honky-tonk, tour-de-force that enthralled the crowd gathered at the foot of the stage. All ticket holders were automatically entered into a raffle to win an autographed One Night Rodeo guitar sponsored by CTQ 106.5 at the end of the festival. The show went on until 11p.m.—twelve hours of musical delight! ovember is the month of Florida’s finest weather, and what better way is there to enjoy the turning of the seasons than to have an all-day music festival along the cool, gentle waters of the Alafia. That’s right, on November 12 Gibsonton’s International Independent Showman’s Association (The Showman’s Club) hosted the 2nd annual South Shore Music Festival. This year’s festival was sponsored by Representative Rachel Burgin of Florida’s

56th District, as well as radio stations US 103.5 fm and CTQ 106.5. The festival kicked off while the weather was still cool at 11a.m. The Showman’s Club back lot was set up like a fairground with food vendors, ride attractions, and local merchants stationed throughout the grassy field. There was plenty of space to set up the main stage with the Alafia River as the backdrop. The first musician who took the stage around noon was a solo acoustic act Jessie Byers.

erri McFarland hasn’t always realized she was talented artistically. Her recent awareness began on a road trip to help people traumatized by a storm.

I awoke from a dream and felt inspired to try to paint to music. What unfolded was the piece I call ‘Nightwatch 3:19.’ Now, almost five years later, I love to practice my art.”

“In May of 2006,” McFarland explained, “about 10 months after Hurricane Katrina, my daughter Mackenzie and I traveled on a bus with several church groups to New Orleans. When we stopped en route at a Walmart, I suggested we buy sketchpads and draw what we saw. I still remember the enjoyment of sketching a woman as she spoke and then adding a Scripture for inspiration.”

McFarland’s home studio occupies two adjoining rooms - one where she paints and one where completed works are displayed. She credits Rodger for his encouragement and God and family for inspiration. Her mother and sister have painted and she acknowledges “the Lord, for impressing things in my mind and spirit.”

She continued, “That Christmas, my husband Rodger purchased an easel for me. It just sat there for a few months because I didn’t know where to begin. On February 27, 2007

McFarland, a Plant City High School graduate (1977), is largely self-taught, although she has spent time watching Plant City’s renowned muralist John Briggs and longtime friend Bob Carter, who owns Drawing Point. Child prodigy Akiane’s work also inspires her, as well as perusing books.

She explained, “I paint a lot of landscapes because I see so much beauty in Creation, and in everything around me awaits a picture to be painted.” “She added, “I’ve played with various media such as graphite, colored pencils, oil, acrylic, and watercolor, but for true relaxation, I especially enjoy drawing. I love the portability of pencils and paper.”

Since five of the children live away with their families, one day McFarland hopes to travel more, especially to climates where the weather includes snow. She likes to paint winter scenes. McFarland explained, “A lot of things I paint, I’ve never seen except in books. It would be great to experience them in person.” The McFarland’s 16-year marriage includes a blended family of three sons, three daughters, one son-in-love, two daughters-in-love, three grandchildren and a home church family, which Rodger pastors. Mackenzie, 15, is homeschooled and also seems to have inherited the drawing talent. One day Terri hopes to earn a livelihood

The fundraiser celebrated the beginning of the Christmas season with all the enchantment, brilliance and childlike anticipation of the year end’s sacred holiday. Dawn Galia, Executive Director of Center Place, said, “I always love when Center Place is decorated for the holidays. You walk in

The Brandon Ballet provided the perfect entertainment with the performance of excerpts from the Nutcracker Suite. Angelina Latorre, soloist and Brandon Idol winner, sang a medley of wonderful Christmas carols. Throughout the afternoon, Pianist Andre Golden enhanced the setting with cheery carols so guests could imagine themselves in the snug and cozy homes of friends and family, together watching glistening snowflakes cascading outside in a winter wonderland.

Guests enjoyed the friendly competitions, too. Karen Liebler, owner of A Children’s Kastle won “Most Creative” with her Grinch-themed table. Kay Sullivan, owner of The Winthrop, received the “Most Elegant” award for her table donned with traditional Christmas decor. Doreen Donovan was the

he ending of a year and beginning of a new one provide individuals and families with reasons to reflect on the past and ponder the future. “Do we need to do something different this next year?” is an oftasked question. “How did I lose control of my life?” “What happened to our family?”

One’s life spins out of control for various reasons: addiction, alcoholism, job loss, divorce, death. The list is as long as the individuals needing help. Many times a family is ill-prepared for the hailstorms of addiction and other life-altering incidents. Is there a person to whom an individual or a family can turn in times of crises? Dan Cosby, a local addiction professional and Life Coach, is available to guide you in discovering the answers to your questions. Focus: How did you become interested in Life Coaching and addiction counseling? Cosby: My corporate position required extensive travel and hours at the office. During this time, our children were teenagers. While some of their misbehaviors were “typical teen stuff,” much of it wasn’t. Our son went beyond the normal teen experimentation with drugs and alcohol. I made a tough decision to resign my executive position to try and bring some order to my life and my family’s. The circumstances with my children led me to the NET Training Institute. I needed to understand about addiction and its impact on the family and learn what I could do to save mine. What I learned created a desire to help people caught in the downward spiral of an out-of-control life—whether that was addiction, grief, divorce or other tragedies. Focus: After earning your addiction counseling diploma and passing the certification exam, what did you do? Cosby: I worked at Overcomers Counseling Center and several public agencies for a number of years practicing multiple modalities, servicing clients with substance abuse and other life-controlling issues. I

worked as a team with the client to unearth the root causes of their struggles and how they could try new strategies to turn their lives around. Focus: What does a typical session look like? Cosby: The first appointment is to assess the client’s needs. I often meet with the parents or the spouse if the client is married. We talk about what is troubling them. Often it is drugs and/or alcohol. Together we work on a case plan and determine the best way to address the problems. Focus: Do you encourage participation in a Twelve Step program? Cosby: Yes, I do. The Twelve Steps have proven to be one of the most effective tools for any life- controlling circumstance, not just alcoholism or drug addiction. The Steps are sound principles to live by, since they encourage personal responsibility and accountability. Focus: There is a distinction between addiction counseling and life coaching. Help our readers understand the difference, and which modality is best suited for their circumstances. Cosby: When dealing with chemical

dependency (addiction), one is dealing with a very specific problem, which generally requires some very specific interventions. Life coaching is more of a process of selfexploration and discovery, trying to identify the issue that is inhibiting growth. What I’ve learned is that most people have obstacles that interfere with their life goals. Just as a coach leads and develops a football or baseball team, a life coach guides a person through specific hazards that sideline their goals. A life coach deals with relatively healthy people who want to improve their lives in specific ways, such as changing careers, finding a healthy relationship, taking their business to a new level, losing weight or deepening their self-understanding. It differs from therapy in that the focus is more on the present and future than the past, more on goals and behaviors than emotions and emotional patterns. We work together to formulate an action plan resulting in change. An impetus to becoming a life coach came from the experiences with our son. We pretty much stumbled through several years of his problems without any support. We didn’t know where to turn for help. My struggle with his addiction issues helped me to identify struggles of my own, causing me to make changes in my life. A life

coach’s services would have been invaluable during this time. As a parent, I know and understand the desperation of watching a loved one lose control and how it may bring out the worst in us as the parent or spouse. As a life coach, I can provide positive steps for someone to bring their life back into order. Focus: Where do you meet with clients? Cosby: I typically meet clients in an office setting. However, I have started an on-line practice and have clients who meet with me via Skype. The Internet provides many opportunities to reach out to a broader geographic clientele. Also, some people are embarrassed to go to a counselor’s office, so this will afford them access to counseling/ coaching in the privacy of their homes or offices. I think it is the wave of the future as more and more people become familiar and comfortable with technology. Focus: Dan, introduce yourself to Focus readers—where you got your start and some of your interests. Cosby: I am an Alabamian by birth and a Floridian by job transfer. Our family moved to Brandon in January of 1992 when I received a job promotion. I worked

for a Fortune 500 company as the Human Resources Director in their newly-opened Tampa market until I resigned in 1997. I have been married 37 years; have three children, and five grandchildren. When not working with other families, I enjoy spending time with my family. Two of my grandsons and I get ice cream or catch a movie on Fridays after school. I enjoy being a husband, father and grandfather more than anything else I do. Each day on Twitter and Facebook I post a thought based on my daily meditations. I am writing articles for submission next year. Focus: What is your educational background? Cosby: In 1983 I graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham with

a degree in Business Administration. After I resigned my job, I attended the NET Training Institute based in Orlando and received a diploma in Addictions Counseling in 2001. The NET courses provided the requisite educational hours I needed to take the Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) state certification exam. I am also certified with the Florida Department of Transportation as a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), Focus: Does your wife work? Can you share something of her background? Cosby: Yes, my wife, Sharron, works for The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters in Lutz. She is the Legacy/Legal Department Director for the state of Florida. She also earned a NET Training Institute Addictions Counseling Diploma but did not take the

state certification exam. Sharron enjoys writing and speaking on the family and addiction and its impact on the community. Focus: What action do you recommend for our readers who are struggling with a loved one’s behavior? Cosby: The first question I ask is, “Are you safe?” If their loved one is violent or aggressive, then physical safety is the primary concern. Once that question is satisfied, the next is, “Is what you’ve been doing working?” If not, start by examining yourself and determine how you’ve changed in response to your loved one’s behavior. If you are interacting out of anger, frustration or disappointment, you may be causing more harm than good. You may unknowingly be contributing to the problem.

Self assessment is important at this stage. If you are reacting based on raw emotions, your ability to use logic and reason may be compromised. eaths caused by prescription drug misuse continue to climb, according to a new report from the Florida Medical Examiners Commission. The report shows that nearly 2,300 people died in 2010 from overdoses caused by prescription drug misuse, an increase of 7.9 percent from 2009. Oxycodone-related deaths, at 1516, in 2010, were up 27.9 percent compared to 2009.

• Parental relationship – Having an addict in the family tests the mettle of a married couple. It is particularly challenging for mothers to put their son or daughter out of the house; the natural desire to take care of the child is strong. The thought of their child being homeless is more than some parents can bear. One parent may enable the addict’s behavior, while the other parent becomes a harsh disciplinarian out of frustration to stop a mushrooming problem. The parents are pitted against each other trying to protect their child.

What do those statistics mean for residents of the Brandon area? They mean we have a serious problem in our community—but not all is lost. There are resources in our area to which families and individuals can turn for help. One such resource is CAP Dan Cosby. Cosby has worked in the addiction recovery field for over 11 years in both private and agency settings. He brings family experience and classroom knowledge to the table to assist clients in their struggle with addiction. This blend of firsthand experience gives Cosby a unique perspective. A former client expressed it this way, “I can’t say enough about Dan and the level of compassion he extends to his clients and their families. He helped us through a difficult time with our son, and I don’t know where he would be today. Because of Dan’s counseling, our family is intact, stronger than we ever dreamed possible, and our son is achieving his career goals.”

The outlook appears dim when there’s an addict in the family. When asked about recommending counseling to friends with an addicted child, a former client said, “Absolutely get counseling. It saved our son and our

Addiction affects the family in myriad ways. Each family has its own problems, but there are some areas common to most family units: • Distant or strained family relationships – The addict tends to withdraw from the family. This can be an initial warning sign that something out of the ordinary is happening. If there was closeness among family members and then a gradual pulling away, this could be a sign of drug or alcohol usage. The loss of relationship with one’s children or spouse causes sadness within the family unit. The addict defends the isolation by saying it’s out of respect for the parents; they don’t want to use at home so they stay away. Jealousy among non-using siblings is common. The addict gets all the attention for misbehaving and the siblings become resentful. • Financial impact – An addict can bankrupt a family. Initially the addict uses their own money to support their habit. When the habit increases and they’ve lost their job, the addict turns to stealing from parents and other family members. A pilfered $20 bill will buy a pill or two. Stolen credit cards many times feed a habit. Items go missing around the house and wind up in a pawn shop; sold for a few dollars to buy another round of drugs. If the addict is arrested, legal fees can range into the thousands of dollars. Treatment for addictions is not cheap, so once again the family’s finances are stretched to the breaking point to get help. College tuitions are often wasted when the student flunks out of college.

One of the most valuable recommendations we received from Dan was for my wife and I to attend Al-Anon and Nar-Anon support groups.” He went on to say that the support they received in the groups showed them areas in their own lives that needed to change. They both got sponsors and worked the Twelve Steps at the same time their son worked with Dan. “The Twelve Steps helped me get back on track spiritually. I became a better husband, a better father, and an overall better person,” he said. Much of the counseling time is spent with the addict. Cosby uses a relatively new approach called CRAFT – Community Resources and Family Therapy. It is a model that guides the non-using family member to learn new techniques to de-escalate tense situations, to use positive reinforcement for the slightest positive behavior. By helping the parent or spouse learn new techniques, the old behavior patterns are likely to change. Cosby has made use of the Internet by scheduling appointments via Skype. This will provide the opportunity for clients to meet outside the office via the computer. The technology will generate clients in locations beyond Brandon’s borders. While much has been said about gloomy statistics, pill mills and crime, there is still hope available to those willing to reach out and avail themselves of what’s in the community. When our third dish, Fish Fingers arrived, I asked our server Joey Coletti about the name. He laughed and said, “It really should be called ‘Fish Arms.” And he was right! The lightly breaded and fried “fingers” were huge and the popular dish is now on our list of favorites.
