Perhaps the best part of our own adventure was mingling with the crowds and learning how much others enjoy the Festival’s ten days in the spotlight. Even now I smile when I think of all those folks, ourselves included, waiting patiently in those quick-moving lines to create our own bowl overflowing with sweet, juicy strawberries, on cake or biscuit, topped with whipped cream. The big question this year is - what kind of new “deep-fried” food did you try? Was it the pickles, the green beans, the Oreos or the butter? How about a doughnut burger or bacon dipped in chocolate or strawberry kettle corn? Our personal favorite was the Red Velvet Elephant Ear, coated in plenty of powdered sugar, naturally. Now we’ll be back to the “eating healthy plan” again - but oh, the delicious memories of exotic and local fair foods. Um-um good! And of course, what festival would be complete without children and all the entertaining things for them to do - like rides and games and animals and competitions of every sort. Watching parents and grandparents enjoy the smiles on the kids’ faces will always be a reassuring sight. It’s then we realize that what always matters most in life are the simple things, like festival trips with family and friends and seeing everything new as if through the eyes of a child. We hope you will enjoy this issue’s stories about Relay for Life and Fashion for a Cause. changing fast. “Things are important today that we never thought about 10 years ago, like teaching an IT course or a web course,” LoPresti said. Modern business requires it. He added, “You can never get ahead of technology, so the volunteers keep growing with it in order to help guide businesses.”

SCORE can also advise a trade person who may want to buy out the company he works for. In that case, it is important the person knows there is more involved than continuing to do the trade part. He must learn to do the business side as well.

To meet these technology needs, SCORE now includes “resource members,” experienced business men who volunteer and bring specialized technology information to small business owners.

RETIRED EXECUTIVES OFFER BUSINESS EXPERTISE

here’s good news and there’s bad news. The bad news is that about a third of all new businesses close their doors in the first three years and a quarter of the businesses that fail each year are more than 10 years old. The good news is that volunteers from SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) provide free advice to help small businesses open and stay open. SCORE volunteers are retired executives or business owners who have a desire to give

back what they have learned over a lifetime. Joe LoPresti is one of these volunteers from the Tampa Chapter of the national SCORE organization. He said, “What we try to do is make people know what’s involved in running a business to keep them in business. We’re trying to grow businesses so they can hire people and be more profitable. That will grow the economy.” Everyone in the SCORE organization recognizes that the world of business is

A typical small business used to be composed of the owner and family members or friends who formed the business’s board of directors. A business’s board today requires more expertise. SCORE is forming an advisory group of volunteers such as a banker, an attorney, etc. who can come alongside and advise small business boards as needed. After nine years with SCORE, LoPresti has many stories. “A success story for us,” he said, “means the owner started something and carried it off successfully.” Some small business owners come back every two or three years after they get going to get additional counseling, often when their growth has hit a wall and they need help to move forward.

Each county’s SCORE group of volunteers is self-supporting (for costs of office space, phone, internet, etc.). They offset these costs by charging $35 per person for the classes they offer. It’s the best bargain an owner will find anywhere. Everyone coming to SCORE, for example, starts with the Going Into Business class, which carries the message: “If you can’t do all these things we’re showing you, don’t go into business. Save your money.” Other classes include creating a business plan, marketing, QuickBooks and more. In business, LoPresti said, “You can’t always start always where you want to start because you didn’t know what you have to know. That’s where we help.” All the classes are co-taught by two or three seasoned business executives who have had senior corporate experience or who have owned successful small businesses, or both. ffering hope to young women through style and fashion was the theme for the March 10 “Fashion For A Cause” show, an inaugural event to benefit the Women’s Resource Center. WRC partnered with LW Hair Studio and Spa to showcase 300 gently worn formal dresses available for purchase with bids starting as low as $25. Fashionistas on a budget were in dress heaven. Seating was limited to 100 guests. Following the formal showing, attendees took advantage of the opportunity to try on favorite gowns and place a bid for their perfect fit. One hundred percent of the ticket and dress sale proceeds benefitted WRC. Pleased with the outcome, event co-chairs Nancy Dawsey and Robin Dunbar, shared, “Our goal was for this to be a successful event to enable young ladies who may not have funds to purchase a beautiful gown for their prom, homecoming or other formal event”. Joanna Weiss, who took photos, said, ““I cherish being part of Fashion for a Cause to benefit WRC, an organization that changes the lives of families in our community.” Since 2003, the faith-based, not for profit WRC organization has provided resources, education and case management to support families, single parents, and individuals experiencing difficulties. WRC impacts the community by working to reduce addictions, child abuse, domestic violence, homelessness and loneliness. Founded by a group of women who themselves had overcome personal struggles, WRC is a place where those in crisis find respect, hope and compassionate support. Dawsey and fellow WRC board member Liz Brewer developed the idea for “Fashion for a Cause.” Both have sons and daughters and have experienced the enormous expenses for these important events in their children’s lives. “So many young girls wear a dress only once, so we thought it would be awesome to accept dress donations and let other young ladies

experience the feeling of being a princess on their special day. We hope this will become an annual community event,” reflected Dawsey. The gowns were memorable treasures that could live on as they’re passed to another group who perhaps couldn’t afford the dress they’d love to wear at those upcoming special occasions. Event model Morgan Infinger commented, “I want to help others by making them feel better about themselves.” “Fashion for a Cause was the event of the year for us,” said LW Hair Studio and Spa owner Laura Weber. “It allowed the opportunity to partner with WRC and be part of something greater than ourselves. It taught me (and I’m sure others), the importance of cooperation and communication. Working alongside Robin, Nancy, and Cheryl was an amazing honor, for they exemplify compassion and determination and desire a true sense of wellbeing for their community.”

As for the outcome, Weber added, “We succeeded in receiving over 300 formal dress donations, watched nine beautiful girls gracefully model 50 premiere dresses, saw the design team accomplish 50 different looks for the models, no one fell, and we raised awareness and collected funds for WRC to continue its wonderful work. Many of the amazingly wonderful volunteers walked away saying, “OK, when’s the next one?” Brewer said, “What an exciting event this was for young ladies to purchase beautiful dresses at incredible prices. We’ve been so blessed to have many wonderful donations and models that made this event perfect! On behalf of the WRC Board, we thank everyone who helped raise much needed funds for the Women’s Resource Center”. Plans are in progress for the 2013 event. Brandon Relay for Life event brings cancer awareness to the forefront By J.A. Buchholz

ara Vinzant knows what it feels like to lose a loved one to cancer.

The Community Representative for the American Cancer Society’s Southeast Hillsborough Unit, which includes Brandon, was only 10-years-old when her grandmother died of lung cancer, but it was that single defining moment that placed her on the path of public service. She started volunteering at the American Cancer Society shortly after her grandmother’s death by stuffing envelopes and then continued to volunteer throughout her early years. She’s held numerous positions within the American Cancer Society from volunteer to intern to employee to her current position. Hundreds of people like Vinzant who have a personal cancer connection will be walking April 14-15, 2012 in the Brandon Relay for Life. Brandon’s event begins at 2 p.m. April 14 at Brandon High School. The theme for the 18-hour event is “Lights, Camera, Action for A Cure.” Many different individual teams will establish camps around the track and then team members will take turns walking the track for the duration of the event. Plenty of activities, games and food make this a family friendly event. Each team can consist of any number of people but most fall into the 16- to 40-person category. Teams will raise anywhere from $2,000 to $15,000 to go towards advocacy, education, patient services and research. Vinzant is hopeful that the Brandon community will turn out and support Relay for Life 2012. The weekend event will start with a survivors’ lap

during which those who have overcome cancer walk a lap to celebrate their personal victories. Caregivers are also encouraged to walk a lap for their crucial assistance given to those who have triumphed over the disease or in the process of battling cancer. A special Relay for Life moment that has always touched Vinzant is the Luminaria Ceremony. After dark the names of those who have died of cancer are written on paper bags, which are then filled with sand. One candle is affixed amidst the sand. The candles are carefully lit and the bags are lined up one after another to create a lighted path. Their time on earth may have ended but their light shines on and the Luminaria Ceremony

commemorates their life. “I always remember my grandmother during the Luminaria Ceremony,” Vinzant said. “There are just hundreds and hundreds of luminaries. It’s a healing experience for some people and also a time to remember the ones we have lost.” “Many American Cancer Society volunteers become active and involved after having lost a loved one to cancer or have someone close to them be diagnosed with cancer,” Vinzant said, adding that a few volunteers started with the organization out of respect for its principles and values and later had someone close to them be diagnosed with cancer. Even if a person or family is not able to participate

on a team or attend the Relay for Life event, Vinzant is hopeful Brandon residents will get involved with the American Cancer Society. “It is easy to get involved, it’s attainable,” Vinzant said. “It’s about how much time you want to put into it.” “Right now we have a need for drivers for our ‘Road to Recovery’ program where volunteers drive cancer patients to and from treatments. Some patients have treatments every day and it becomes a hardship for family members to miss work to get loved ones to and from life-saving appointments. The patients can’t drive themselves because they are often sick and weak from treatment. It can be very costly to take taxis five days a week. So the need is great to make sure patients are receiving

these life-saving treatments on time, as scheduled.” Schedules are busy for many families but Vinzant is encouraging Brandon residents to make the time and get involved with the organization. “Finding a cure and fighting cancer is a team effort,” Vinzant said. “You never know who your efforts will impact,” she added. “We are about finding cures so no child or adult has to hear the words that they have cancer. Sara Vinzant is a woman on a mission - always has been in a way, even when she was too young to realize it. She was 10 years old when she lost her grandmother to cancer and began her â&#x20AC;&#x153;career'' with the American Society Cancer. 16

oday Vinzant, a newlywed of less than six months, is gearing up for the upcoming Relay for Life. The Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people will gather at Brandon High School and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. Vinzant is hopeful that the Brandon community will turn out and support the event. She looks forward to residents catching the American Cancer Society volunteer bug, just as she did many years ago. She took some time out of a packed schedule to give us a glimpse into her history, her motivation and how she likes to unwind. Focus: Were you and your grandmother close before she died of lung cancer?

Sara Vinzant: My grandmother and I had very

similar personalities so we often butted heads. I was a stubborn child and liked to do things my way and she was one to never give in. But, yes we were very close. We saw each other very often, as they lived in Tampa where I grew up.    Focus: When you were volunteering at such a young age, did you have any idea this would become a career for you?

Sara Vinzant: No, not at all. My mom would

drag me along to stuff envelopes or sort things to help her while she volunteered, but I never thought this is what I would be doing as a career.   Focus: When you attended the University of Florida, did know this is what you wanted to do?

Sara Vinzant: I became heavily involved with

the American Cancer Society while attending the University of Florida. I started as a Road to Recovery driver, which later transitioned into a Road to Recovery coordinator for Alachua County. I met so many wonderful people through Road to Recovery that I decided that working with a non-profit might be a good fit for me. From there I picked up a minor in Leadership for Non-Profits and took on a Patient Services Internship with the local American Cancer Society. That is when I became hooked and decided the American Cancer Society was were I wanted to have my career. Focus: How many years have you spent in total with the American Cancer Society?

Sara Vinzant: As an employee, I was an Interim

office, just 3 other girls, but we work very hard and have a lot of fun in the process.  Focus: Do you think your grandmother is proud of the contribution you make in the lives of others each and every day?

Sara Vinzant: Yes, I know she would be proud

of the work I do. Every year at each of my four events I purchase a luminaria in memory of her. It is because of her that I am who I am and do what I do.   Focus: How do you enjoy your time when you are away from work?

hiking, caving, scuba diving, canoeing, camping, etc. Camping is my favorite way to unwind, There is no cell phone service, no interruptions or sitting at home with a Redbox movie. Vinzant has found purpose and meaning in life by her work with the American Cancer Society. She fuels her enthusiasm for the job by knowing with each Relay for Life event researchers are getting closer to no man, woman or child hearing the words that they have cancer. She encourages everyone to add more purpose to their lives by attending the upcoming event and support those who are walking with the purpose of ending cancer.

Sara Vinzant: I enjoy anything outdoors -

Sara Vinzant: When I was younger I wanted to be a marine biologist, but in adulthood, no other career has been an option. I love what I do.

Focus: How do you feel about what you do? Is going to work every day a joy?   Sara Vinzant: I love what I do! It can be difficult at times, long hours and a hectic schedule, but I get the opportunity to work with some truly amazing volunteers! I enjoy making a difference and am so proud of the four communities I work with: Bloomingdale, Brandon, Riverview and Seffner. I am also lucky to work with some of the best co-workers in the world! We have a very small

Darby was diagnosed with FSGS last year and this has taken quite a toll on her. Her Faith, Her Family, & Her Loving Friends have been a Huge Support system for Her. Unfortunatly it is not enough. veryone has heard the term struggling college student, or perhaps even been in those shoes before. There never seems to be enough time or money when attending college. Between classes, homework, exams and sleep there is little time for work. That was the case for business owners Robert Webster and Andrew Proses.

With an entrepreneurial father, owning his own business has always been a dream of Webster’s.” My dad always said, ‘Being your own boss is the American Dream.’”

Tampa Lights began after two college roommates were looking for quick, easy cash during the Christmas season. In 2006, Webster and Proses decided to get creative by offering to hang business and residential Christmas lighting. They did a few homes the first year, a few more the next, and were eventually doing almost 100 homes and businesses in the Tampa area.

Both he and his partner are creative, so the business opportunity seemed the perfect fit. Webster and Proses enjoy being artistic and love bringing smiles to client’s faces; there is an immediate sense of gratification and a true sense of excitement.

After graduating from the University of South Florida in 2007 Webster and Proses decided to make their services a full time job. Both graduated with degrees in Business Marketing. With knowledge gained from their business degrees, the two realized the potential for steady growth to continue.

He added, “Every day is different. Every bride, wedding, venue, event and party is different.”

What started out as a seasonal lighting company soon branched into the market segments for weddings, parties and events. Tampa Lights adapted to what their clients wanted. As requests came in they started “to acquire more equipment and knowledge and started to be more creative,” said Webster. The company’s main specialization was Christmas lighting but soon expanded. Webster explained, “With the wedding

lights we brought to the table a unique style of lighting people had not seen before.” This lighting style, called canopy, is strung overhead, which allows for more illumination across the backyard and outdoor areas, a feature other lighting vendors had not offered before. The beginning of 2012 provided even more business new potential. Tampa Lights has begun the process of transitioning and expanding with requests from clients for a new service, lanai lighting. After successfully building their other lighting segments, Webster believes this service can bring great potential to new and existing clients. He believes people are unable to use the lanai area once the sun goes down, but with lanai lighting people could utilize the space anytime. Rather than having harsh spotlights over the pool deck, Tampa Lights offers an elegant alternative. The round café or market bulbs used with the lanai lighting can be strung across the lanai or in a zigzag pattern depending on individual preferences. With a variety of lighting styles and wire colorings to fit all lanai coverings, Tampa Lights creates an elegant, seamless design. They have both the classic incandescent bulb and the LED bulb which is a low voltage, low emissions bulb that uses less power than the traditional incandescent bulbs.

Tampa Lights will create their own structure to an uncovered outdoor pool deck. They can either create the structure of support or use the existing façade of the roof and string the lighting over to a pole they supply. Both the LED and incandescent bulbs used for the lanai lighting are dimmable, setting the tone for any outdoor event. Whether a party, barbeque, gathering, late night swim or simply used for safety, every situation can be addressed for individual liking. Tampa Lights focuses on form and beauty of their lighting display. They want their lights to be appealing to the eye, serve purpose for every lighting event, and provide easy and affordable services to their clients. Webster hopes to continue to grow as a recognized company, but for now, he and Proses enjoy doing what they do. The Tampa residents also enjoy providing services to several local charities. Last year and early this year they provided their services to Calendar for a cause and Heart Gallery. I would like to see this keep growing, never stop growing,” said Webster. “It’s positive and we just really enjoy what we do. It’s fun and we make people happy with our work.”

isit China Fuji and expect to have your expectations exceeded. We were pleasantly surprised this month when Janine Nickerson of the Brandon Community Roundtable invited us to share lunch at one of her favorite Valrico restaurants - China Fuji.

Owners Yanci and Kam Chen opened China Fuji five years ago after selling their first restaurant on Kingsway Road. China Fuji has a lovely interior, great food, and sushi freshly prepared on site. Almost immediately after being seated, we were served our beverages and a nice bowl of fried Chinese noodles, the wide variety, to munch on while we studied the extensive menu. With so many choices to consider, this took a few moments. We finally settled on the Shrimp with Snow Peas with Wonton Soup and the Egg Foo Yung lunch combination with an eggroll. Everything was delicious. In fact, we are quite certain we’ve never tasted a fresher or more tasty eggroll. The soup, served steaming hot, was especially flavorful as well. As for

the entrees, we both would order these dishes over and over again. The portions were generous enough to fill take home boxes, too. Egg Foo Yung is a Chinese specialty that many folks have never tried, but it’s always on my “foods I crave that I like to introduce others to” list. I describe it as a light and fluffy egg pancake that contains onions, bell pepper, celery or other finely chopped vegetables and/or meat such as chicken, beef, or pork. (Vegetarians can order without the meat.) Typically, egg foo yung is served with two of these fluffy egg cakes, a gravy blend, fried rice and perhaps an eggroll. (I’m making myself hungry again now as I write this : ))

China Fuji has Egg Foo Yung preparation and presentation down pat. In fact, I’ll be returning often and bringing friends. The Shrimp with Snow Peas that Janine ordered was a beautiful meal in itself. Shrimp cooked to perfection and snow peas with enough “snap” to provide the crunch we always enjoy in Asian food. We learned also that it is available prepared with either white or brown sauce. Janine orders this dish frequently as it’s one of her favorites.
