So we did and we were blown away. Zy had organized his toys, his clothes, his closet - it looked like he had hired professionals to do a room makeover. Needless to say, we showered him with encouraging compliments and we’re thinking he could open a business already. Then a week later, he did it again - caught us off guard at the grocery store while we were shopping for the Floyd food bank and snack pantry. Zy asked Dede, “Mom, how much is all this going to cost? Are you sure we can afford it? Since when did 4-year-olds start caring about the price of food? We answered his questions, which prompted a few of our own, such as, “What about those who can’t afford food?” and “Do we really need everything we buy?”

Once again, the issue is filled with the local flavor that makes the Greater Brandon Area so unique. Read, learn, know and share - your stories are always good. As you watch daily for teachable moments, keep your eyes on the kids because they have it goin’ on and our opinion matters to them. Grace Christian School Varsity Basketball Team and Florida Christian Conference 2011-2012 State Champions shown L-R include: Caleb Winter, Christopher Dyke (back), Alex Correa (front), Noah Herrin, Isaiah Winter, Jimmy Zannone, Ben Pukas and Coach Josiah Winter.
GRACE CHRISTIAN PATRIOTS WIN STATE SCHOOL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP T WRITTEN BY: CHERYL JOHNSTON
he Grace Christian School Patriots Varsity Basketball Team became the Florida Christian Conference 20112012 state champions on February 18 at Clearwater Christian College.
En route to the championship, the Patriots went 23-1 and avenged their season’s only loss to the Heritage Christian Eagles of Kissimmee with a 66-58 win at the state tournament.
New coach Josiah Winter and his sevenplayer squad were a determined group. As a result, the five starters each averaged 10 points or more every game this season. Senior captain Jimmy Zannone exemplified determination when his finger was dislocated in the third quarter and he refused a substitution. He explained, “We all knew the level of commitment required and what we had to do to reach our goal.”
Junior point guard and scoring leader Noah Herrin averaged more than 17 points per game, including the 50 three-pointers he shot. Of the win he said, “We were super close, like a family, and it felt great to see all of our hard work pay off.” First year coach Josiah Winter agreed. “The great thing about this team was that anyone could lead in scoring on any given night.” Junior shooting guard Ben Pukas was also a season standout with 51 three-pointers. The swarming defense used by the GCS teammates resulted in approximately 14 steals per game and held opponents to only 41 points on average. Senior captain and prime defender Isaiah Winter averaged nearly 10 points, 3 blocks, and 14 rebounds per game. Isaiah’s younger brother, sophomore Caleb
Winter, was selected Most Valuable Player of the State Championship game and also designated by all conference coaches as MVP of the entire season. Of his other little brother Caleb, Coach Josiah Winter said, “He can do it all and combines every skill to help with a win.” Caleb landed 72% of his free throws and averaged 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists in competitions. Next season the Patriots return with three starters, as well as reserve players Alex Correa and Chris Dyke. Coach Josiah Winter had three goals in this his first year: “To honor God in word and deed, have fun, and win.” With gratitude, he added, “We met our goals and even surpassed them. It will always be a season to remember.” FOCUS MAGAZINE BRANDON MAY 2012

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF DURANT’S 4TH ANNUAL MARCH MOWER MADNESS STORY BY: PASTOR KEVIN WYNNE
2
012’s March Mower Madness proved the event’s stability and future with more than 30 business sponsors and tremendous community excitement. The First Baptist Church of Durant is known for “doing whatever it takes” to reach people for the Gospel message. This community event is held prior to Easter each year and sets the environment to welcome people who aren’t already members in a local church. With other churches involved, it sends a strong message that our aligned churches offer love and acceptance to all people. The Race Day begins with a prayer for all those who gather on our property, that they would be blessed by the experience of Christian love. But the work behind the scenes actually begins much earlier. The senior groups from FBC Durant and Pleasant Grove Assembly of God begin fishing months before this event so they can donate their catch to a few hundred hungry spectators. To open the event, Scott Flemming from FBC Plant City sounded the Shofar, which was followed by our National Anthem. Many other area congregations participated in the fun, too. Pastor Matt Genrich from Cedar Grove Baptist Church was selected to be this year’s starter. Springhead Baptist Church was represented by Maurice Hamilton driving a modified race mower for his Men’s Ministry. Bethany Baptist Church’s Youth Group was represented by Collin Bugg, Lance & Chad Lower and… a

strong cheering section. The fastest mowers were from Lakeland driven by Donald Leverington (1st place Champion) and Clark Howard who crashed in turn four of the Durant Mower Speedway, eliminating his bid for the trophy. Bruce Cooper, a member of Bell Shoals Baptist Church, had an impressive run ending 3rd overall. The most unique racer was Cody Auden from the Bobby Dunson Racing team. He drove a stretch frame modified mower to end his day with a 2nd place finish. Watching the children complete in two divisions was a real treat for spectators. The Jr. Push race consists of plastic mowers being pushed by children up to age 6. The 7-to-12 year-olds compete by racing two antique push mowers around the track - first over the finish line wins. Following this event and through relationship building within our community, our church was overfilled on Sunday to ultimately share our intentional target message: “None of us are perfect. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” We are the First Baptist Church of Durant! We hope you’ll visit us at 7725 S. Turkey Creek Rd. We welcome everybody to experience the difference Christ can make in your life when you submit to His Lordship. If you are not yet part of a Bible teaching church, our Praise and Worship service begins at 10:30am. See you then! www. durantbaptist.com

The Wells Law Group Specializing in Consumer and Business Insurance Claims Story by Sharron Cosby and Photos by Kim Wells
“When I started practicing law I had a flat belly and a full head of hair,” chuckled Brandon attorney Kim Wells. Now I’m bald and well, let’s just say I don’t have a flat stomach any longer.”
of their lack of understanding the duties imposed upon them. An attorney well-versed in insurance jargon can steer an insured in the right direction, helping to protect their interests.”
Wells, a native of Kalkaska, Michigan, has lived and worked in Florida for over 29 years. He’s been practicing law for 25 years, the last three as managing partner of Wells Law Group, currently located at the Brandon Chamber of Commerce Building.
At this point in his legal career, Wells’ practice has narrowed to almost a niche level. Most of his clients have insurance losses—business loss claim, insurance bad faith claims, fire, windstorm, sinkhole, water damage, and other insurance claims related to life, health, disability.
“You don’t want to know me professionally,” Wells said. “If you do, then something bad has happened to you or your most important asset—your home or business.”
Wells formerly represented insurance companies which provides a well-rounded perspective when representing clients in claims against their insurance company. “I know how they operate, what they look for in trying to deny the claim,” Wells said, “and I use that knowledge to get the best possible outcome for my clients.”
When asked if an attorney should be consulted following a loss, Wells responded, “Absolutely. Most people don’t understand the language of their insurance policy and forfeit benefits because

His practice has steadily grown the last three
years. Wells started with one paralegal and himself working cases. Now he has two Of Counsel attorneys in the office and two paralegals. Wells said one of his objectives is to educate his clients on what to expect when filing an insurance claim. “I tell them to document everything. If they have a phone call with an adjustor, follow it up with a letter and send it by certified mail, return receipt requested. Keep copies of receipts for out-of-pocket expenditures. One of my key instructions is to photograph the accident scene, cracks in the house’s foundation, whatever the problem is. Things change and it’s important to document the initial scene and changes as the case progresses. These are common sense actions, but insureds don’t always think about them, so I guide them in documenting their claim.” “The insurance companies view claims from a business perspective. My clients view the claim
from a personal perspective, and I try to level the playing field for my clients. I hire experts so we will know what the insurance companies know about the claim,” Wells said. Wells is a member of the Florida Bar, United States District Court, Middle District of Florida, as well as the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He holds professional memberships in the American Bar Association, Windstorm Insurance Network, Hillsborough County Bar Association, and the Brandon Bar Association along with several others.
The Wells Law Group is moving to 1210 Milennium Parkway, Suite 1050 at the end of May. To contact the law office, please call 813-413-8889.

Vanessa and I both are members of the Hillsborough County, Brandon and Florida Bar Associations and have been admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court Middle District of Florida - she in 2006 and I in 1992. I am also a member of the Tampa Bay Trial Lawyers Association and the Florida Justice Association.
Vanessa: In 2003 after three years I graduated
from The Ohio State University in Columbus. In 2006, I earned the J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. Today 85% of my practice is devoted to litigation in family law and personal injury cases.
that we get to know people and they get to know us. Brandon is a friendly, kind and tight-knit community. We see our clients in the grocery store, in church and at local events and we like that. We want them to know we’re not done with them just because their case has closed. We are their friends and neighbors, too.
Focus: Do you recall a particular case you’d like to mention? Allen: We were pleased recently to litigate a very
large settlement for the six children of a 36-yearold mother who died after a being hit by a truck hit her. The children will now be financially set for life. That reaffirms why we do what we do.
Focus: Practicing law can be volatile at times because you’re dealing with people’s emotions
Focus: You must have a great staff to accomplish all you do. Allen: Yes, we do.
They laugh when I say ‘It only takes a minute’ for a job I know is much bigger. Melissa McCauley is our Florida Registered Paralegal for personal injury cases. She is working towards a Bachelor of Science degree and plans to attend law school. In Melissa McCauley Lynn Carter her own words, she said, personal injury paralegal Family Law Paralegal ‘I love to help clients, talk to them, and be there for them regarding the confusion as well as in stressful situations. How do you measure the pain they are going through after an accident.’ success as attorneys?
Vanessa: Lynn Carter is my Florida Registered
Paralegal with 20 years of experience in family law. What I, and our clients, appreciate is how caring she is with people going through a divorce. They love that she takes the time to actively listen to them during this tough time in their lives. Melissa said she and Lynn ‘love working for Carman & Bevington because we are a small, laid back firm that produces big results and personal service. Allen is a great boss and understands personal issues arise and never holds a grudge. We are like a family, here to help people in our community. Lynn and I are trusted to do our jobs and are not micromanaged. All in all, it is just a great place to work, help people, and have fun.’
Focus: Speaking of fun, what do busy attorneys do to relax when they’re not resolving cases? Allen: Since I was inspired in my youth by the
bass player Jaco Pastorius, I still love playing bass from time to time with a local jazz trio. Also, because my dad, uncle and brothers were golf pros, I still enjoy playing golf when time permits.
Vanessa: I love the beach and I’m a Tampa Bay
Bucs and Ohio State Buckeyes football fan. In June, I’m looking forward to a trip to Haiti where I can help in an orphanage.
Allen: We try to please clients because we
measure success by their happiness level and how often they refer others to us for help. A satisfied client once gave me a plaque entitled “Fundamentals” that hangs now in my office. The quote by Thomas Jefferson reads: ‘In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.’ We do this best when it matters most.
Vanessa: We will always attempt to resolve cases
as quickly as possible if we can obtain settlements in our clients’ best interests. But we also prepare each case from day one for the possibility that we will have to go to trial and present our evidence to a jury. I feel successful when our clients realize how much we’ve accomplished for them.
Focus: Describe what you love about your work & special features that set you apart from others. Why should folks contact Carman & Bevington, P.A. if they feel they need legal help? Allen: We consider ourselves your neighborhood lawyers. You will not be turned over to a junior associate or a paralegal. Vanessa and I personally collaborate on every case from start to finish, working the file and being accessible to meet with you face-to-face from the onset. We handle
the case completely, from pre-suit through trial, and we believe in helping you even with the little things like arranging for damage repair, a rental car and lost wages. We want to minimize hassle for our clients and ease the stress that legal issues can bring. We love to win and we hope to be the firm everybody in eastern Hillsborough and the Tampa Bay area would trust to handle their personal injury claims.
Vanessa: And yet another - We offer free
Here’s another reason. Early in my career I worked several years for a major auto insurance carrier, defending against personal injury claims. I also trained the company’s adjusters in two states how to effectively deny claims, so I know the positions, defenses and trial tactics they will attempt to use against my clients. Because of this experience, we’ve been successful to settling cases without resorting to litigation.
And to our readers, when the need for legal help arises involving motor vehicle accidents, product liability or general personal injury, remember that it’s important to contact an attorney quickly so as to protect your rights and evidence. Carman & Bevington, P.A. offers a free accident kit and a free consultation at one of their two offices or evenings and weekends by appointment. Spanish language services are also available. Remember, the firm with an established reputation exists to serve you well.
consultations and handle personal injury claims on a contingency fee basis, meaning we take all the financial risk associated with your case, and you won’t pay us anything unless you receive compensation.
Focus: Thanks, Allen and Vanessa. We can see why you earn those referrals.

JUDY’S DANCE FUN FOR AGES TWO ACADEMY THROUGH TEENAGE YEARS E WRITTEN BY: DEANA GARRISON
stablished 20 years ago, Judy’s Dance Academy started out as a one room studio with 50 students. Owner, Judy Comiskey says, “I took a leap of faith.” Encouraged and financed by her uncle, this one room studio grew into a three-studio dance facility. Comiskey says, “Soon we’ll build an arts complex on our North Miller Road Property.
With lots of experience under her belt, including being a founder of the Harrison High Dance Team in Evansville Indiana, Comiskey instructs our young generation in many dancing and acrobatic skills. She has highly qualified staff members that thrive on bringing out the talent in each student that attends. Comiskey also believes that children who participate in dancing skills have a brighter intelligence. It is said that social skills and

performance in academics show major improvement in children who participate in the arts. She says that is why their motto is, “Smart Kids Dance.” Children from ages two through their teenage years are able to take a variety of classes. Some choices include jazz, hip hop, African, tap, clogging, ballet, acrobatics, and more. Each class they offer is listed in full description online on their website. You can view each selection in order to make the right choice for your child. Many fun skills are covered in each course. In fact, this summer, Judy’s Dance Academy will be holding camps that children of all ages can attend. You can call the Studio for registration times and dates of the camps. This experience will not only be fun for the youth, but will help them achieve skills they have within them that they do not realize
they have. Comiskey says, “Every child is born with unlimited and untapped potential.” Just by visiting this studio, you can see the joy of the arts in the staff members as well as on the faces of the children. If your child wants to take a try at dancing, this summer would be a great time to test it out. Who knows… they may even want to continue the fun and excitement by joining a year long class.

Comiskey is not only involved in the studio, but takes her care and concern out into the community. Her studio is committed to numerous charitable causes. She is involved in Relay for Life, Breast Cancer, 3-Day Walk, American Diabetes Association, Cystic Fibrosis-Rock and Roses, and Camp Christina.
The dance academy is located on the south side of Highway 60 just east of the traffic light at Mt. Carmel and Highway 60. They are in the East Shore Plaza Strip mall beside Love’s Goodyear.
Her dancers perform throughout Hillsborough County including local nursing homes, the Hillsborough County Fair, the
Comiskey was recently recognized by the Chamber of Commerce for her 20 year involvement with the organization. Judy strongly believes in giving back to the community.

f you thought good service was a thing of the past, go to Uncle Mike’s Smokehouse Grill. After a year in operation, Brandon Patch.com voted this restaurant first in service out of 64 area restaurants. Wow! Simone and Mike Trolley are owners of the Grill situated back of Old Town Brandon Harley Davidson on west Hwy 60. Simone and I sat at a table on the deck of the open pavilion restaurant and watched ducks and koi fish swim in the pond just below our table. The lunch crowd arrived as I ate a serving of the freshest sweet potato fries in the world. They would have been perfect by themselves, but they’d actually been made, well, heavenly, with a sprinkling of powdered sugar. Then I ate the seasoned collard greens and a bowl of purple cabbage slaw. Did I mention the Cajun corn fritters? Or the tender, juicy steaks? Mike’s Hog Wings are the hands-down favorite appetizer. These smoked pork shanks are served up with a choice of barbecue or teriyaki sauce. Simone is right when she says, “If they don’t make us famous, nothing will.”
The lunch crowd included a group of eight from Grow Financial. Sue Jennings had been there before and brought her co-workers because of “The atmosphere and the good food.” Mercedes Cayon was on her fourth visit for “The food. I’ve had the burgers, chicken sandwich and mac & cheese.” At the bar, Kenny Holmes was on his second visit because he likes “the open air atmosphere with a beer.” Cal is a regular who says he enjoys the “. . . food, the camaraderie. All our friends are coming here now. This is the whole package with the Harley Davidson dealership next door.”

“We want to make coming here a unique experience for people so they come back again and again,” said Simone. Bikers are coming, yes, but so are families because the menu includes items that children love, such as mac & cheese and chicken tenders. And just think how children would love watching the ducks (Anastasia and Fiona, Oliver and Maid Marian). Mike’s menu ranges from lip-smackin’ BBQ to Cuban sandwiches to salmon and
