LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER I took the family to see a wonderful movie this month - “The Last Ounce of Courage” - and it’s one we highly recommend to every American. It was refreshing to see a film with a strong message about the freedoms we enjoy, the people who defend them, and what each of us can do to help preserve those. And the children in the play literally stole the show when they changed up their middle-school’s annual Christmas play. We left the theater thinking we should go home to decorate with a huge tree in the yard, lights on the house and an outdoor Nativity scene. The film helped me to connect even more to several articles this month. One details the “Battle Cross for the Iraq War Memorial” that’s under construction at Veterans Memorial Park on US 301 in Tampa. The director of that effort, Mark Goujon, returned from his duty in Iraq having lost six comrades to hidden bombs that exploded while they searched to secure an area. Too great a price they paid, and yet, the young soldier in the film reminds us that most would defend America with their last breath and ounce of courage. The other is our Spotlight on Ron and Debbie Galletti of Born to Ride. When we lunched together recently, I learned about a family whose business is purposed around sharing the great charitable contributions. They are determined to magnify all the great things bikers do for others in need. The way the community came together in the film also reminded me of what we witnessed this past month when Aquali Spa sponsored a benefit for Jacob Meachum, the teen seriously injured in a vehicle accident in June. To see how many people came out in their green “Team Jacob” t-shirts to check on his progress, spend some money on his behalf, and hear American Idol contestant Jeremy Rosado sing was inspiring. A community united in purpose can accomplish great things - and Brandon does it all the time. We are proud to serve this great town - to share your heartwarming stories and to help you grow the businesses you’ve built. Thank you for the opportunity to showcase you.

BATTLE CROSS ORDERED FOR IRAQ SPONSORS NEEDED TO COMPLETE WAR MEMORIAL OTHER STATUES M STORY BY: NICOLE SCHOEN
ark Goujon became Chairman of the Iraq Veteran Memorial Committee last June and since that time has raised almost $10,000. Local sponsors have made it possible to order the centerpiece of the memorial, a 6-foot tall bronze Battle Cross, costing around $7,500. The Betz Bronze Foundry will build the statue and Goujon hopes it will be in place at the Veteran’s Memorial Park and Museum off Highway 301 by the end of this year. “I felt it was my place to take the initiative and represent the Iraq veterans,” Goujon said. “I didn’t want to wait three decades before we (Iraq veterans) got a memorial.” At 18 years-old Goujon enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served from 1998 to 2010, spending around a year in Iraq on a Weapons Intelligence Team. During a mission he lost six comrades when an IED exploded. Now at 33, Goujon devotes time

to make sure his friends and others who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn will be remembered in an honorable way.
Wayne Pugh served in the U.S. Army and Air Force for a total of 19 years before being medically retired from injuries while in Iraq. Pugh worked with Goujon on the WIT in Iraq. “The memorials are a way to remind Americans the true sacrifice military members gave and still give to this day,” Pugh said. One of Goujon’s committee chairmen is Michael Graham who served 20 years in the U.S. Army and is also Commander of AMVETS Post 44. He served in Iraq for a total of 21 months. “The most meaningful part of the memorial is the fact that Hillsborough County, the
community and the sponsors truly respect and understand the sacrifices of our men and women,” Graham said. The current cost of the entire memorial is around $250,000 but could change with the decision of the entranceway sculpture. All funds are raised solely by donations. “We need volunteers to go to different organizations and try to get sponsorship,” Goujon said. “We also need people to join the committee. I can’t be everywhere at once.” So far the largest sponsor is co-owner of Champion Foundation Repair and Goujon’s wife, Jaime, with $5,000. “I am so proud of Mark for taking all the initiative he has,” Jaime said. “He has such a generous heart and involves himself 100% with getting this memorial constructed.”
Photo by Mark Goujon, Mike Goujon and Mike Mosher
Other larger donations have come from AMVETS Post 44 with $1,500 and from VFW 8108 Ladies Auxiliary with a $500 granite tile. “There are things that we have designed and ready to do, but we are just waiting to have the money in the bank,” Goujon said. People in the community can help make this memorial a reality by purchasing a 4-by-8inch brick for $50 or an 8-by-8-inch brick for $100 to commemorate a loved one in the military. There are also 12-by-12-inch granite tiles for $500 or 16-by-16-inch tiles for $1,000 that will be displayed on the T-Wall. “All of our sponsors will be recognized on our blog and our website, and depending on the amount donated, they are going to get a brick or tile placed in the most premier spots,” Goujon said. Goujon hopes to complete the memorial by Veterans Day 2013. To see video and photos of the progress of the memorial or to donate visit: http://veteransmemorialhc.blogspot. com/.

As the smiles indicate, the rain didn’t dampen spirits at the Aquali Spa fundraiser to benefit local teen Jacob Meachum’s recovery process. Photo courtesy of Aquali Spa
AQUALI SPA FUNDRASIER FOR TEAM JACOB FAITH, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY A STORY BY: CHERYL JOHNSTON
rainy deluge didn’t deter hundreds of dedicated Team Jacob fans, including American Idol talent Jeremy Rosado, from attending an Aquali Salon & Spa fundraiser September 9, 2012 in Valrico.
To date, the Team Jacob supporters have raised $10,825 for Jacob Meachum’s recovery process. And they’re not finished yet. The lives of 15-year-old Jacob and his family changed instantly June 3, 2012 when an inebriated, speeding, uninsured driver (with suspended license) slammed into the Kawasaki Mule in which Meachum, his brother Bailey Meachum, 16, and Trent Tulloh, 15, were riding across Wiggins Road. The family refuses to question God. Instead and together, they’re building a “new normal” since Jacob’s traumatic brain injury (TBI) and expecting the handsome teen to regain full functionality, begin his freshman year, and try out for basketball at Plant City High School. The promise of Jesus in Matthew 21:22 is the family’s strength: “In all things

whatsoever you shall ask in prayer in faith believing, you shall receive.”
Both Bailey Meachum and Tulloh have fully recovered, however, Jacob (whose TBI is categorized as “severe diffused axonal injury with shearing”) will require 24-hour care, constant medical attention and extensive rehabilitation for months to come. Thankfully, with help from an exceptionally supportive family circle, Jacob’s mother Joie Shell is on top of the situation. She hopes to work again one day at The Neuro Center in Brandon and continue education for registered nurse (RN) or nurse practitioner (NP) certifications. For the time being, she knows that “healing will come one day at a time.”
“I don’t have adequate words to express enough gratitude for this caring community’s outpouring of love, support and prayers,” said Shell. “Our family has been profoundly impacted and we know God has a plan in all of this.” After eight weeks at Tampa General
Hospital and Brooks Rehabilitation Center in Jacksonville, Jacob returned to the Plant City home of grandparents Stan and Brenda Hobby, who had added a large room to accommodate therapy and medical care.
While his mother Joie and her husband Joe Shell, along with Jacob’s dad Richard Meachum and his wife Sue, were busy tending to rehab needs, Joie’s sister Carrie Floyd-Baker updated Facebook posts concerning her much-loved nephew, “Jakey.” Even though Carrie, a teacher of special needs children, and her husband Senior Chief Steve Baker, USN, live near Annapolis, Maryland, they’ve been very involved in Jacob’s recovery. Of Carrie’s efforts, Joie said, “She’s been an angel and her help an amazing gift. She’s even joined a support group to share Jacob’s story. Then she teaches us what she’s learned.” Shell continued, “We’ve always been a really close-knit family, so everyone’s life revolves around Jacob right now. My parents have been incredible. After he’s recovered, we want to promote public awareness of TBI.”
Jacob’s oldest brother Josh, 20, called this experience “a wake-up call.” He explained, “I was headed away from belief in God, but this accident has turned me around.” Dressed in his “Born to Win” ballcap, green Team Jacob shirt and purple sneakers for the Aquali Salon & Spa event (where friend Michelle Stall and his aunt Brandi Hobby work), Jacob was all smiles, enjoying Rosado’s up-close-and-personal song. Encouraged by so many well-wishers, the next day Jacob amazed his physical therapists at his best sessions yet. “To express our thanks for the contributions of every individual, organization and company would be almost impossible,” said Shell, “but our family has definitely felt blanketed in prayer and appreciates their overwhelming and life-changing generosity.” Prayers and encouragement by many, even strangers, continue on the www.facebook. com/groups/TEAMJACOBMEACHUM page. It is a game of sheer chance where gamers roll three die in order to earn points or to roll a three of a kind, aka a Bunco. At each table, gamers are divided into two groups who roll against one another for the most points. The team that ends up with the least amount of points when the cowbell rings loses the round and have to move to the next table. In fact, a volunteer walked amongst the tables with fresh carafes of the sweet drink to fill the cups of those too embroiled in a match to get up for a refill. Though some attending were Bunco ‘virgins,’ the drinks never were. At the end of the game, winners were given prize bags filled gift cards and bottles of wine donated by a variety of local business that support Center Place. There was also a 50/50 raffle with a jackpot of over $200 for one lucky ticket. Regardless of the final tallies, and ‘losers’ and ‘winners,’ the event was a good time for all. BORN TO RIDE MOTORCYCLING MEDIA SPECIALISTS Interview by Cheryl Johnston

OCTOBER 2012 thefocusmagazine.com
Ron and Debbie Galletti are a husbandwife business team if there ever was one. Although their company’s “Born to Ride” name is a reference to the adventures and people involved in motorcycling, it’s an even more perfect phrase to describe the teamwork evident in the enterprises headed up by these high school sweethearts. In every venture the Valrico couple has tackled, they’ve come out on top. Together they’ve worked at Ron’s forays into heavy metal music, wrestling and for the last 17 years in their Born to Ride multi-media companies. Motorcycle enthusiasts know and love this family, not only because of their magazine and TV and radio shows, but also for their efforts to support charitable causes. According to Ron, “Motorcylists are some of the most compassionate and generous people in the world. They give and give and never expect anything in return and they will ride miles to do it. It is our pleasure to play a part in serving this community on wheels.” Focus met recently with the Gallettis in their Brandon office to learn more about bikers and their passion for giving back. Focus: First, Ron, since your office is loaded with family photos, tell us a little about yours. My supportive wife Debbie is my rock. She’s the organized administrator and I’m the idea person, always looking for a new story to share. We graduated from Brandon in ’80 [Ron] and ’81 [Deb]. She also has expertise in the employee benefits area of the insurance industry. We have two children. Emily is a sixth grader who loves cheerleading, dance and technology and Ron is a fourth grader who plays baseball. They both do well in school and are entrepreneurs already. Since we started Born to Ride before they were born, they’ve grown up in the industry and through it, they’ve learned so many good things about giving, sharing and helping others. Deb’s mother Nancy Ray works with us also. She’s an invaluable part of our team who just evolved into it from the days when she kept our children in the home where we started our business. Focus: What prompted you to start Born to Ride and its various media formats? In the BHS yearbook, you’ll see a picture of me on my Suzuki 750 motorcycle. The first time I showed up at Deb’s house to take her for a ride, she was ready to go - as the driver of her brother’s bike. She had grown up riding duo behind her mother. So after we were married for a while, we bought bikes and got involved in some group rides. Then I realized no one was telling the story of this great community of wonderful people. I had learned about promotion in the
world of music and wrestling and decided it was time to take that into our local biking industry. Our goal is to document the biker lifestyle in a proper manner. When we asked ourselves, ‘Who will, if not us?’ we answered by starting Born to Ride. We want to magnify the significant work they do to help when there’s a need. Focus: Tell us about your previous adventures in music and wrestling? Way back when in the ‘80s, we were riding along in Debbie’s Custom bike builder demonstrates hi “intentional” flames Pinto and I made her pull over for the crowd at the BTR 17th Anniversary Party. so I could run into the place where a local band was holding This month we are celebrating our 100th issue since the auditions. Long story short, I became “Nasty Ronnie,” the 2004 debut of the BTR magazine with a party at The Rack lead vocalist of the heavy metal group known as “Nasty Sushi Bar and Billiards Lounge. Our design team of Josh Savage.” These were the names I gave to myself and to the Pope, Jesse Williams and Seth Wuertz works to layout the band. Then I went to work to promote us and cut our first magazine and then it’s printed on slick paper in full color demo album. We eventually recorded five albums, toured by NPC (Newspaper Printing Company) in Tampa. The America and Europe and in 1990 performed 60 shows in 65 free magazine is distributed through dealerships and biker days throughout the U.S. We just had a reunion concert in friendly establishments. I can’t thank Bob enough for the things he taught me about With publishing and producing media comes the power ‘taking care of every aspect of a business.’ to affect public attitude and opinion and I take that responsibility seriously. I believe we have a duty to bend Focus: For those unfamiliar with the biking industry, what and help others. We spend lots of time together causes. We take our children with us often, so they are a part and make lots of memories. of a great big biking family. Focus: As a recognized industry leader, Born to Ride operates in several media formats, right? Can you explain those? Sure! Our brand was established 17 years ago with Born to Ride TV, which is the longest running biker TV show in the world. We’re nearing 900 episodes produced since then. It has 3 million viewers and appears 3x/week in 22 counties. Locally, folks can watch at 11PM Sundays on WTTA-TV (My TV Tampa Bay). We describe our show as the ‘Life & Times of Motorcycles and the People Who Ride Them.’ We consistently earn high ratings for viewership, which benefits our advertisers and helps them sell their products.
Focus: What final thought would you like to leave with Focus Brandon readers? This is a great place to live and work and we appreciate the friendships we’ve built here. We hope that we have impacted the image of bikers and biking in a positive way because we work hard towards that end. Motorcycling is a mainstream pastime now and includes people from all walks of life from celebrities, athletes and corporate professionals to singles, grandparents and ex-hippies - just good people who enjoy adventure and life. We’d like to encourage everyone to get involved now because the future of cycling is only going to grow brighter. FOCUS MAGAZINE BRANDON OCTOBER 2012

HESS ORTHODONTICS A WRITTEN BY: AMANDA FURMAGE-DECK
fter receiving his doctorate of dental medicine from the University of Florida College of Dentistry— graduating as class valedictorian—and earning a master’s degree in orthodontics from the University of Michigan, Dr. Michael Hess decided to begin his journey as a solo orthodontist at the St. Petersburg Dental Center.
With the aid of his passionate and motivated staff, Dr. Hess quickly became a popular choice for patients desiring premier orthodontic care. In fact, Dr. Hess and his team almost doubled the revenue of the orthodontic branch at the St. Petersburg Dental Center in just two years. “Our youthful enthusiasm carried over in our work,” said Dr. Hess. “We developed an outstanding reputation with our patients for our quality and customer service.” On September 7, 2007, Dr. Hess opened his own practice, Hess Orthodontics—complete with a coffee and tea bar, game room, and nail spa located within the large reception area. However, Dr. Hess continued to provide his patients with the latest technological advancements in the orthodontic industry. From Invisalign and SureSmile, to the
Damon Bracket System and i-Cat, Hess Orthodontics creates treatment plans to meet each patient’s individual needs. “We are committed to creating Florida’s most beautiful smiles in a fun, compassionate environment while providing superior orthodontic care,” said Dr. Hess. Hess Orthodontics’ ability to provide outstanding customer service has resulted in much praise from patients. “Excellence: I believe this word sums up every aspect of Dr. Hess’ practice,” said one patient. “The office is beautiful. The coffee bar is great. The staff is always accommodating. I think they actually love their job. Dr. Hess is personable, enjoyable to communicate with, and excellent…We have enjoyed—I can’t believe I’m using this word while speaking of braces— every visit, every stage, and every interaction…We have experienced first rate orthodontic care.” “Dr. Hess and his staff were very friendly and professional throughout my daughter’s orthodontic treatment,” said another customer. “They made having braces a fun experience and we always looked forward to our follow-ups. [My daughter] was always
treated special, as if she was their only patient. Her teeth and smile are beautiful.” Not only does Hess Orthodontics make a difference in patients’ lives, but they’re also committed to the community. Not only does the practice donate money to local athletic teams, schools, and organizations, but they also sponsor unique contests, programs, and events throughout the year at their office. For example, through their summer scavenger hunt program, the Hess Orthodontics staff encourages patients and their families to explore the community and create a scrapbook of their experiences. Patients earn points by visiting certain businesses and events, and the top three finishers receive valuable prizes, including a BOING! Jump Center Party of 10 gift certificate for the first place winner. However, each summer scavenger hunt participant seemed to walk away with an even greater reward. “Many parents and patients tell us how much they enjoyed the contest, how they went places they never would have, how they spent precious time together, and how because of the economy they were unable to take a vacation and enjoyed [the scavenger hunt] so much more,” said Hess Orthodontics public relations coordinator Samantha McGuire. The practice also created the “Retainer Tragedy” program. If patients lose or break their first retainer, they are given two options: pay a discounted rate or write a two-page story describing their retainer’s demise. If

patients select the second option, they must also bring in a full grocery bag of nonperishable food items for local food pantries. “Our ultimate purpose of this program is to teach our young patients about responsibility, how important it is to take care of their retainer and teeth, as well as the value of money,” said McGuire. In addition, at the end of the month, Hess Orthodontics will hold its annual Halloween Candy Buy Back event. The practice will pay $1 for each pound of candy donated. These sweet treats will then be shipped to Operation Gratitude, an organization that sends care packages to wounded soldiers, veterans, and U.S. military personnel deployed in hostile regions and their children at home. “I believe that keeping such a positive, strong presence within our community, our future will always be bright,” said Dr. Hess. And this plan is working, as Hess Orthodontics will soon be opening offices in Fishhawk and Apollo Beach. Through this expansion, Dr. Hess and his team will be able improve even more smiles and impact even more lives.

BRANDON BEARS MIDGETS O ctober’s Team of the Month is the Brandon Bears in the Midget Division. Currently holding an undefeated 6-0 record, this team is on fire.
What makes this very impressive group stand out from the rest? It’s their dedication, determination, hard work, and team effort. Last year, they took the Super Bowl Title and seem to be headed down that same path this year. After losing a number of team members in the move-up process and with a few not returning for various reasons, this team wasn’t sure they would still carry the same strength and determination displayed in the previous year. However, this group of young men have since proved that theory wrong.

support needed to push themselves to the top.
It is great to see these nine - to eleven-yearold boys work as a team to reach their goal instead of having just a few shine.
“They work well together as a team and communicate on the field. It is like they can read each other and know what the other one is going to do,” says Team Mom Eraina Maginnis.
As Coach Kharon Brown put it, “The boys know they each have a role to play. When one person is not doing their part…no one shines.” Teamwork is their major weapon. Working as a team makes them stronger and more powerful. Many parents commented on how well these young men pull together for each other. When they are on the field you can see them talking it out to each other and just watching each other and giving that moral
Obviously, the coaches play a vital part in the success of this team. These coaches have been together for a while and work hard at preparing the young men for each game. They have worked on strength and discipline in order to build their winning team. Head coach Victor Gancedo along with coaches Jesus Hernanadez, Stuart Maginnis, Laurence Stubbs, Kharon
Brown, Patrick Horn, and J.P. Palachpa use different strategies to build the desire for improvement on their team. One of the motivators is the “Hard Hat” award. Each week someone’s name is added to the Hard Hat. Coach Gancedo teamed up with the local Yogurt Shop, Menchies, to provide a nice reward for such dedication. The boys work hard to achieve the goal of earning this award and like to help each other reach the goal as well. Without the extra effort and support of the coaches, the Brandon Bears team would not be where they are right now. Gancedo proudly exclaimed, “I am extremely impressed with how this team has grown. They have learned and pushed themselves to be bigger, stronger, and faster.” This is definitely one team to follow. Winning the Super Bowl yet again is another goal the Bears hope to add to their achievements. If determination counts, they are well on their way.

let Aldo have a small taste. This blend of ground beef, pork, green peppers and onions in Kansas City sauce is a delightful treat. If steak is what you have in mind, you must try the sirloin and ask for it “Selmon Style,” which simply means Parmesan garlic butter is added on top to give it that special taste you will definitely love. The sirloin is served with mashed potatoes and mushroom herb gravy. The Smoked Chicken Salad is a must try. Photo by Deanna Garrison
LEE ROY SELMON’S M y Focus friend Aldo and I have found a brand new place to dine in Brandon…Lee Roy Selmon’s. This family oriented sports grill just celebrated their Grand Opening on September 9th and is already packing in the business. Everyone I talk to has nothing but wonderful things to report. So, of course, I had to try it out for myself. The Brandon location is the eighth to open in Florida since Selmon established this great dining experience because of his passion for food. Here the staff pays tribute to the NFL legend with the huge number 63 on their uniform shirts, a reminder of the man whose values the restaurant represents. First impressions are so important and Selmon’s made a good one. When I walked in I couldn’t help but notice the friendly faces that greeted me and the abundance of televisions mounted on the walls. I realized I had just entered a sports fan’s heaven. On game day, if I can’t be in the stands, I know the next best place to be. I’ve already claimed my favorite booth right in front of the gigantic television. This relaxed atmosphere is great for any occasion. Whether you visit to dine with your family, take a date, or just want to hang

out with friends, Selmon’s is the perfect, reasonably priced restaurant for you. Looking around, we noticed the Legends Wall, where life-size pictures of local legends are displayed - athletes who, along with Selmon, are highly respected. In his short life from 1954 to 2011, Selmon was recognized as “a man of honor, integrity, strength and family values” who was “a friend, a leader and a constant inspiration.”
to find my favorite and I definitely found one here. I have to say, Mama’s Meatloaf takes the prize. I couldn’t get enough of this grilled specialty. I was nice enough to
Aldo and I had a nice dinner with manager Miles McConnell, who showed us just what to order. Our delicious feast included a Smoked Chicken Salad, which I highly recommend. They definitely don’t hold back on the chicken either. It was piled high on top, just the way I like it. When the Cedar Plank Salmon was served, Aldo was ready to do some serious eating. The cedar plank permeates the perfectly grilled salmon and enhances the flavor. Aldo simply agreed, “It doesn’t get any better than this.” The All-Pro Platter is a must have, especially if you want to sample more than one item with a friend. The two of you can share this dish while tasting a variety of foods. Included in the meal are generous helpings of St. Louis Style Ribs, Soul Good Pulled Pork, Mama’s Meatloaf, Smoked Chicken Breast, baked beans and French fries. I always seem

Be sure to check out the restaurant’s large patio area as well. The details such as cushioned sofas add an uncommon touch of sophistication. Aldo and I highly recommend you plan a trip soon before the crowds have decided it’s their favorite place to gather and enjoy a great meal. We are convinced Leroy Selmon’s will definitely become one of yours.
