What a busy month this has been! If activity means productivity, Brandon can expect an outstanding year. As our Focus team worked this month to gather the good news about upcoming events, our famous Florida Strawberry Festival and various other civic efforts, we were reminded once again of what an amazing town this is, and of the people’s generosity. In case you’re not aware, the Brandon area community volunteers rock! Please don’t miss our Spotlight Interview with Susan Saunders, the 2012 Key Citizen selected by the Brandon Chamber. Through her 800 hours of community service this past year, Saunders has touched lives at Center Place, the Brandon and the Campo Family YMCAs, the Chamber, the Brandon Outreach Clinic and many other charitable organizations. Her responses will both encourage you and challenge you. The March issue also features a story about the 1Voice Foundation and the school for kids with cancer that the organization is working to establish in Tampa. You can offer support through donations or through your participation in three upcoming fundraisers. We are pleased also to highlight Katie Urrutia, the 2012 Brandon TOPSoccer Volunteer of the Year, for her work in the league for children with disabilities. hin guards, cleats, soccer balls rolling around the trunk….sounds like a soccer parent. Does your child have the drive for soccer? Are you wishing to improve his/ her skills? Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center (BSAC) is now offering soccer clinics through Strikers Pride Soccer Academy. These clinics will be coached by Edmar “Dimas” Amaral (aka Coach Dimas). Soccer players aged 6 to 19 from beginner to competitive can all benefit from the clinics. Coach Dimas has played soccer since a young age. He played professionally with the

Cruzeiro Esporte Clube in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He always had a desire to coach and began youth programs when he came to the United States twelve years ago. “I always dreamed of being a coach and not a professional player,” Dimas said. Coach Dimas has been the head coach and trainer at Players Club of Tampa Bay, as well as being the head coach and trainer at Brandon Area Youth Soccer League (BAYSL) for two years. He is currently the coach for the Houston Dynamo. He trains fifteen middle school girls and fourteen middle school boys to become better at a game they love.

“I’ve joined up with BSAC because this is a good opportunity to teach soccer skills. Also, BSAC is very professional and will be a joy to work with,” Dimas shared. “I teach all levels of soccer in all aspects of the game in a healthy, fun environment. I desire for players to become comfortable with the soccer ball. They should be able to play without thinking because it becomes instinctive. I also want them to have fun and love the game.”

BSAC will also be hosting a Capalooza on April 20 with information about Summer Camp, a pool party and a Music Festival. Coach Dimas plans to be there with some of his current players to demonstrate the skills he teaches. This event will also include BSAC celebrating fifty years in business.

aring for her husband, Steve, and her two young children, James and Lauren, serving as co-chair of the Brandon Chamber Young Professionals Network, and working for Maria Maranda State Farm, it’s apparent Katie Urrutia lives quite the busy life. However, she always has time to give back to the community and was recently named the 2012 Brandon TOPSoccer Volunteer of the Year. Developed by the U.S. Youth Soccer Association and introduced in Brandon in 1998, the Outreach Program for Soccer is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with mental or physical disabilities organized by a dedicated group of volunteers. In addition to these volunteers, the program wouldn’t see success without donations from area individuals and businesses, whose selfless giving allows TOPSoccer participants to register without cost and enjoy free uniform tops, cleats, socks, shorts, and shin guards. At its start, the Brandon TOPSoccer program accommodated approximately 30 players, yet has grown immensely as over 150 children competed during the 2012 season. Urrutia first got involved with the TOPSoccer program in 2007 through her workplace. According to Urruita, Maria Maranda has been a TOPSoccer sponsor for over 10 years, providing soccer balls and donating money annually, which drove Urrutia to play a much more significant role within the organization.

“At first, I just helped notarizing the registration forms, then after two years, I began to participate on a much larger scale,” said Urrutia. “Now I help with everything from registration and volunteer coordination to picture day and the end of the year party… When I won Volunteer of the Year, I was very excited and humbled by the recognition. There are so many people who do so much for the program, so it was such an honor to be chosen.” TOPSoccer was formed with the goal of “fostering the physical, mental, and emotional growth and development of America’s youth through the sport of soccer at all levels of age and competition,” which is extremely important for children with developmental disabilities. “TOPSoccer gets kids outside every Saturday for 10 weeks beginning in September and offers them an outlet to participate in a team sport, allowing them to learn valuable social skills and build lifelong friendships,” said Urrutia. “For some of our kids, this is the only time they get to interact with other children outside of a school setting.

Local » Focus Not only would a Flying Club benefit the Lakeland community, but it would also provide safe, affordable, and accessible aircraft for local pilots. Members will pay a onetime initiation fee of $100, and reasonable monthly membership and hourly aircraft user fees. These costs will pay for insurance, hangar storage, and 100-hour maintenance inspections for the club’s planes, which is a great deal for aircraft owners who don’t fly as often. In addition, the aircraft owners associated with the club will receive compensation when members fly their planes. However, Miller believes the biggest benefit of the flying club will be its ability to mentor young pilots. “The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has been conducting research to find out why the American pilot population is decreasing,” said Miller. “It’s because we aren’t training people in this country. We want to get those people who have flown commercially or are ex-military pilots in contact with the young people coming out of the aviation academies. We will allow young people to be junior members in our club, and they will be mentored by real pilots who will help them focus on aviation as a career.” In addition, the flying club—which will be a 501(c)(7) tax-exempt corporation—will give local pilots the opportunity to cultivate aviator camaraderie. “Pilots do this thing called ‘hanger flying,’ where they get together and share stories about their experiences,” said Miller.

hen David Harbaugh left Colorado for Valrico, he was extremely excited to put his pilot’s license to use. As a flying club member at Denver’s Centennial Airport, he could travel anywhere he wanted within a two-hour radius by plane. But when he moved to Central Florida, Harbaugh realized that the Bahamas and other exotic locales were now within his two-hour radius. As a result, he immediately tried to join a flying club at the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, home of Sun N’ Fun, the second largest annual gathering of pilots and aircraft owners in the nation. Yet to

Harbaugh’s surprise, there wasn’t a flying club in Lakeland. “I thought I could join a club, but I got here and there wasn’t one,” said Harbaugh. “I could rent aircraft, but I could never be sure how safe that would be since I didn’t know who was doing regular maintenance.” Soon, Harbaugh met David Miller, a retired member of the U.S. Army and former aircraft owner. The two shared a similar philosophy on aviation safety and a passion for increasing the ever-decreasing American pilot population. With Harbaugh’s help,

Miller decided to create a Lakelandbased flying club, which is currently in the surveying stage with a goal of recruiting 100 pilots and eight aircraft owners. According to Miller, 93 people have shown interest so far. Miller has also received support from Sun N’ Fun President and CEO Mr. John “Lites” Leenhouts and Lakeland Airport Director Mr. Eugene Conrad. Mr. Leenhouts and Mr. Conrad believe a flying club would increase takeoffs and landings, which in turn might lead to the Federal Aviation Administration supplying more funds to the airport.

Charlie Mays, a private pilot interested in the flying club, is also excited about forming relationships with people who share his zeal for aviation: “We solve every problem in the world during those times,” stated Mays in regards to hanger flying. “It’s so much fun and actually educational.” Miller continued, “Unless you served in the military, the camaraderie among pilots is something you’ll never find anywhere else. It’s a shared love…Aviation is like a dream in that it makes you feel so free. There’s nothing like going down the runway, leaving the earth, and knowing you can go anywhere you want. Flying uses every part of your brain and every feeling. According to the National Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, approximately 12,500 children annually (46 per day) are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. An April 2011 report indicates more than 800 of those reside in the Tampa Bay area.

“She has helped my family navigate the many resources available for the care of my son,” said Perkins. “If I have a need that is unfulfilled, 1Voice is there! Some of the events are extremely meaningful for James and make his life seem more normal. I have benefitted from the Individualized Educational Plant (IEP) seminar and Mary Ann came and walked with us at a Breakthrough for Brain Tumors event. This organization just plain rocks!”

hen a determined mother sets out to accomplish something that will help her child, watch out! Such is the story of the 1Voice Foundation and the 1Voice Academy, a school the organization hopes to establish here in Tampa.

The 1Voice Foundation provides family support programs during the long journey of treatments and recovery for those families in Hillsborough and the seven surrounding counties whose children are battling cancer, while also raising awareness and funding for pediatric research. And 1Voice has a mantra for its families - “Once You’re Ours, You’re Always Ours.”

The 1Voice story began in 2008 when several Tampa community members involved strictly with the research and clinical trial portion of childhood cancer recognized a need for family input and interaction. They reached out to a group of mothers whose children had lost their fight with the dreaded disease. These women identified several needs that deserved address and the local vision of surviving childhood cancer as one voice became a reality. Today the group’s Cause is to provide family Care and support research to find the dreaded disease’s Cure. The 501(c)3 non-profit 1Voice Foundation works directly with families, various organizations, hospitals, and research facilities within the childhood cancer community to build programs that address the specific financial, emotional and educational needs of families fighting the battle. While seeking the ultimate cure, the ongoing research also focuses on less toxic treatments that will ultimately yield higher rates of survival. From financial assistance via grants, to in-patient hospital care packages, sponsored family trips, gift cards, event tickets, and etc., 1Voice identifies areas where the support of its donors can make the biggest difference. Additionally, through assistance from the organization’s

Sustained by her faith and her friends at 1Voice, mother Nancy Perkins of Tarpon Springs is a foundation fan for sure. Her son James, 14, is battling the December 2011 diagnosis of Anaplastic Astrocytoma Grade III brain tumor through a trial treatment using three different chemotherapies that make him very sick. Perkins called the Foundation’s Executive Director Mary Ann Massolio “wonderful” and credits her and the organization for exceptional help.

As an oncology social worker for more than 20 years, Massolio has helped cancer families deal with their diagnosis, while guiding them to practical resources. She shifted her focus from adult hemophilia counseling to pediatric oncology social work after discovering that only five cents of every dollar gathered for cancer research is designated for children’s diseases. Three years after she began the pediatrics work, Massolio was shocked by her father’s prostate cancer diagnosis and her own nine-year-old son Jay’s diagnosis of lymphoma. She called the experience “surreal,” when on the same day both received ports through which chemotherapy would be administered. Six months later after having spent the last five weeks of his life on ECMO in Miami Children’s Hospital, Jay died from complications of pneumonia and a compromised immune system. Like other parents, the Massolios felt helpless about their son’s biggest desire to attend school like his friends. Because children on treatment miss school due to low blood

counts, hospitalizations, clinic appointments and fever, they often feel isolated and experience resentment for their medical situation. Chemotherapy can also cause developmental changes, learning disabilities, language disorders, mobility issues, motor planning and sensory impairments. While on chemotherapy, many students can be dually enrolled in their local public school system’s Medical Homebound Program, which allows them also to attend school in the hospital classrooms. Often, however, due to their immune systems, cancer patients are sent back to their hospital rooms when children with other illnesses enter the hospital classroom.

The mother to “lil fighter Nestor” said, “The amazing 1Voice Foundation goes above and beyond to help families. They are a second family to us! We love going to the events, which are the perfect distraction to the ugly world of cancer….and what we love most are the informative meetings that empower us!” As to Nestor’s first day back in school on February 21, 2013 since his 2011 diagnosis, Berrios explained, “He has a trach and the school requires a nurse, so it was a fight to get him in. As the Massolio family learned, further financial hardships and additional stress result when working parents must stay home because their sick child can’t attend school. One sad statistic is that 80% of marriages experience divorce when a child suffers from cancer.

Don and Beth Schille and their children, Nicholas (10), Connor (9), and Lauren (4) are another grateful 1Voice family. At age 3 in June of 2011, their daughter Lauren was diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma (tumor in her abdomen). She is now 9 months out of treatment and in remission. According to Beth, “Our children are able to do things they probably wouldn’t be able to do because of finances we’re still dealing with from treatment. Don and I are so happy to have a safe, happy place where they can just be kids again. This amazing organization caters to children like ours and their independent needs. We especially love attending McKayla’s Hands on Horses program at the Quantum Leap Farm.”

After Jay’s death, and with encouragement from Dr. Cameron Tebbi (world renowned pediatric oncology research doctor, USF professor, and Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at both the university and Tampa General Hospital), Mary Ann continued to counsel and guide families whose children were in treatment. Over and over again, she witnessed the children’s desires to live as normal a life as possible, and normalcy included school. So, in 2009, she began the pursuit of a dream to establish a school for children with cancer. A Needs Assessment Interview with parents and patients verified that the parents’ biggest fear was the exposure their immunesuppressed children would encounter on both buses and school grounds. The assessment indicated they definitely would co-enroll their children in a school offering a safe filtration system for an education in the least restrictive, nonstigmatizing setting with a developmentally appropriate curriculum. To her surprise, Massolio discovered that no schools of this type existed anywhere in the world (but just recently, Singapore has opened the first. Ironically, her son Jay had visited and been fascinated by this city). The determined mother has been on a mission ever since to make the cancer treatment journey as normal as possible in the most abnormal of circumstances. Thankfully, she has had moral support, not only from the Foundation’s directors and sponsors, but also from the Hillsborough County School District, the Shriners, Tampa General Hospital, and the Moffitt Cancer Center. A recent meeting regarding the establishment of a Satellite Homebound Medical Education Center, the 1Voice Academy, proved to be extremely encouraging.

hen Susan Saunders retired from her job at the Brandon Regional Hospital, it finally freed her up to work full-time—as a community volunteer. With a greater amount of time available to her during the day, Saunders is now able to assist more organizations dear to her heart. In fact, she performed over 800 hours of community service last year alone. Because of her extensive work in the community, the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce presented Saunders with the 2012 Key Citizen Award, following her husband, Steven Saunders, who received the award in 2005. FOCUS Magazine was delighted to spend time with Saunders and learn about her incredible passion for the Brandon area. FOCUS Magazine: Tell me about yourself. Susan Saunders: We moved here in 1985 from Orlando, but previous to that, northeast Georgia. My husband and I always thought after our children were grown we’d leave Brandon, but we fell in love with it and we’ll never leave. At the time we moved here, we had three little children, but now they’re all grown up and having babies. I have five grandchildren. My youngest daughter Shannon lives in Raleigh, my son Stephen lives in Tampa, and my daughter Elisabeth in Atlanta.

FOCUS: How did you get your start volunteering in Brandon? Saunders: When my kids were in school, I did all the PTA-type things and was president of the Brooker Elementary PTA. As far as giving back to the community, my first love was Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association. When we moved here, it was the beginning of the summer and a friend told me to take my children to their art classes. They did art, drama—a little bit of everything. I was eventually asked to be on the board, and I later served as president. I’ve filled almost every role there, but now I’m off the board and usher for children’s theater and volunteer in the gift shop. FOCUS: Where else do you volunteer? Saunders: I’m a licensed realtor and did that for while, and then worked at Brandon Regional Hospital. From there I got involved with the Brandon Chamber and served on different committees and the board. Now I volunteer there every Monday morning. I also help at the Brandon Outreach Clinic. I don’t really have a medical background; my job at the hospital was in support. So when I go to the outreach clinic, I’m their “do” girl, as they always ask “Susan, can you do this? Susan, can you do that?” Anyway, the clinic treats the

under-insured, people who can’t afford health insurance, but don’t receive help from the county because they aren’t below the poverty level. The clinic is composed of incredible volunteer physicians and nurses who give free care. It’s an amazing place.

Roundtable and the Eagle Leadership Award from Leadership Brandon, but the Key Citizen Award was one I never expected. This was truly the biggest honor I’ve ever received.

I’m also active at the Campo and Brandon YMCAs. Many people think the YMCA is just an expensive gym, but they do all sorts of things for the community. I help the YMCA with fundraising so they can scholarship swimming lessons and camp for children. Many children would be home alone all summer if we didn’t provide scholarships for summer camp.

FOCUS: What are you most proud of regarding your service to the community? Saunders: My pride is in my family. I’m so proud of what they have accomplished as community volunteers. My husband is a Boy Scout leader, chairman of NAB, and a past Chamber Chairman of the Board. He also works with the Hillsborough River State Park Preservation Society. My son Stephen volunteers at his son’s school and will soon help with Cub Scouts. Elisabeth owns a CrossFit gym where she does lots of work there hosting seminars. Shannon is chairman of the special needs ministry at her church. We have instilled in our children that volunteering is what you do, that you give back to your community.

I’m a member of the Kappa Kappa chapter of the Kappa Delta Phi national service sorority. We do many group volunteer activities to raise money for children in the Brandon community. I’m the civic committee chair right now and we support Center Place, the Y, A Kids Place, ECHO—almost all the local charities. The summer before last I volunteered at a Kid’s Place as a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator, where I taught card making classes and paper crafting. It’s so much fun working with those sweet kids, most of whom have been taken away from their homes.

FOCUS: So what does 2013 have in store for you? Saunders: I’ll continue to volunteer at Center Place, the Y, the outreach clinic, and the Chamber, but I always seem to find new things I want to get involved with. One is the Women’s Resource Center. I guess that may be my next venture.

I helped start Cards for Troops, where we make holiday cards for our deployed troops to send back to family in the states. This past year we sent 3,500 cards with the help of other Stampin’ Up! demonstrators. We get together, design the cards, and find sponsors to pay for postage and supplies. We make the cards every first Saturday in October.

FOCUS: What do you love most about being a part of the Brandon community? Saunders: I think the small town feeling and the huge sense of community is what makes Brandon special. Brandon is made up of wonderful people who really love this community and will do everything they can to make it better.

I had the honor of being on the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office Training Staff. I trained people to work at the precincts and worked as a Regional Election Problem Solver for the Primary and General Elections. In addition to training workers, I served as an inspector for Early Voting in August and as an assistant clerk for early voting in November.

FOCUS: It was an honor to speak with Susan Saunders. Her story is truly inspiring and should motivate us all to give back to our community. We encourage you to get out and assist someone in need. I’m a part of the Neighborhood Accountability Board (NAB) at the Chamber, and we see first-time youthful offenders. So many of these kids just made a mistake, so we give them sanctions like writing apology letters, fulfilling community service hours, and drafting essays so they don’t have to go through the court system. If they successfully complete our program, then they don’t have a record. Finally, I’m a part of Chicks for Charity, founded by last year’s Key Citizen and Alice B. Tompkins winner Tammy Holmberg. She started an annual cruise where we raise money for a specific charity. This year, it’s Center Place. FOCUS: How do you balance your time between all of these giving organizations? Saunders: It’s difficult because I love them all. It’s hard to say, “I’m sorry, I can’t come help today because I’m doing something for someone else,” but the people I serve with understand I do a lot of things for a lot of groups because I love this community. FOCUS: The amount of work you do for the community is remarkable. What drives you to serve each and every day? Saunders: My passion comes from my belief that we should pay it forward. My family has been so blessed. We just feel like so many doors have been opened for us, so we should open doors for others. FOCUS: Are there any “wow” moments from your volunteering experiences that really stand out? Saunders: One that really touches me is about a young man that came before the NAB board. He had stolen trading cards. We asked him what he wanted to do in the community and one thing he mentioned was to be in Boy Scouts. I introduced him to my husband, who’s a Scout Leader, and got him involved immediately. He ended up getting his Eagle Scout Award, and the night he got it, he said he wouldn’t have been able to do it without me. He’s gone on to do wonderful things at USF and is very involved with their student ministry. It’s just amazing, to think where he could have been without NAB. FOCUS: How did you feel when you won the 2012 Key Citizen Award? Saunders: It’s an amazing feeling, but I don’t do what I do to get awards. They are just a bonus. This is one of the biggest honors Brandon can bestow, and it just blew me away. It was pretty amazing. I’ve received the Alice B. Tompkins Award from Community

Kay Varnum thoroughly enjoys her role as an Associate Director of the Florida Strawberry Festival®, one she’s embraced since her election in 2002. “I just love being with the people of the Festival,” said the Plant City native and former Strawberry Festival Queen (1985). “Katie” grew up in a family whose roots run deep in agriculture and education. Varnum, a stay-at-home mom, is the daughter of Joe and Velma Newsome, and has been married 24 years to husband Scott. Their three children have been involved with showing livestock at the Festival over the years. Mitchell, 22, and Claybo, 19, both attend Florida Southern College, and daughter Jessi Rae, 17, is a Durant High School junior, FFA member and cheerleader. Both Scott and son Claybo coach football at DHS as well.

The Florida Strawberry Festival® organization is managed and governed by the unpaid board of 16 directors and 14 associate directors, with assistance from only a few year-round, paid staffers. Replacements are selected when a director resigns to become a director emeritus or passes away. Directors and associate directors serve on committees to accomplish the necessary work that results in the Festival’s continuing success. “To be nominated and elected for this position is a great honor,” said Varnum. “I have enjoyed seeing how much the Festival has evolved - it just gets better and better each year.”

Queen & Court Meet The 2013 Florida Strawberry Festival

ur 2013 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen and her Court have been selected. Kelsey Fry, 2013 Queen, Ericka Lott, First Maid and Maddy Keene, Madison Astin and Jamee Townsend are court members. These young ladies will represent Plant City leading up to, during and after the 2013 Florida Strawberry Festival. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see them all dressed together wearing coordinating outfits, and having a great time with everyone and everything. I recently found them all getting ready for one of the very first photo shoots and pulled them to the side for a few quick questions in between hair, makeup and eyelashes. Each year, everyone in Plant City looks forward to the annual competition to become the next Florida Strawberry Festival Queen. The pageant is a major fundraiser for the Plant City Lions Club, and once the Queen has been crowned, she and her court are passed to the Florida Strawberry Festival to begin a whirlwind of shopping for the clothes they’ll wear, attending events, making guest appearances, and speaking with the media to promote the Florida Strawberry Festival. Each year, we’re so fortunate to find 5 young ladies that will best represent Plant City and the Florida Strawberry Festival, and each year we find ourselves wondering if we can find 5 young ladies that are as good as the previous year – and we do. I recently had a few minutes with this year’s Florida Strawberry Festival Queen, Kelsey Fry. Focus: Where did you get the interest in competing for Strawberry Queen? Fry: We first moved to Plant City when I was in the eighth grade. I immediately realized that I was eligible to compete for Strawberry Queen. My dad would ask if I wanted to move to Plant City or stay in Brandon, but I definitely wanted to be in Plant City. Competing for Strawberry Queen was just something I always wanted to do. Focus: What was the toughest aspect of preparing for the competition? Fry: Preparing for the interview with the judges, and not being worried about it. I worked with a coach about 4 times, and my mom would ask me random questions while we were driving in the car. I’d answer, and then she’d say, “Ok, now make sure you say that in your interview.” Focus: Share with me your overall experience from the night of the competition. Fry: My experience was probably a lot different from the other girls. I had a terrible cold. I was dying back stage. But I think it helped, because I wasn’t stressing out about everything. I was too worried about getting tissues when I needed them. I kept telling myself, ‘Don’t cough. Don’t cough.’ And I could feel a cough coming. But I made it through. I remember getting off stage and just coughing away. The whole experience of being on stage and doing your walk was nice. I could hear people cheering, and during the evening wear portion everyone gets to wear the dress that they love so much, and everyone gets to see it. So that was fun.

Focus: Was there a memorable moment for you, aside from being crowned? Fry: When they called us down for the top 10, and we entered the stage from the audience, that was nice because I could finally see the people I know without the glare of the stage lights. It was really nice to see people and know that they were there for me. I was able to hear my swim team yelling for me, and when I was in the audience getting ready for the top 10, I could finally see where they were sitting. They were literally in the back corner of the bleachers. Focus: Have you competed in any other pageants? Fry: I did Calendar Girl once and I was selected for Miss March. That was my junior year of high school. I competed in Strawberry Queen last year and made it into the top ten, but that’s all my pageant experience. Focus: So describe what life has been like in the two short weeks you’ve been Strawberry Queen. Fry: I thought I was busy before, and now I’ve realized that I wasn’t busy at all. I know that people recognize me more, now. I go into Publix and people will say, “Oh my gosh. You’re Kelsey Fry.” That’s pretty cool. People seem to know my name now and that’s just fun. Focus: So what kinds of things have you done in these first two weeks? Fry: We’ve been to three shopping malls and closed them every time. I think we’re done with our shopping now. I think we’ve spent all of our money. It didn’t take long. Focus: So what is next on your schedule? Fry: We have the Taste of Florida breakfast and the Governor’s Luncheon later that day. We also have the Celebrity Chef Dinner coming up. Focus: What are you looking forward to most about the Florida Strawberry Festival? Fry: I’m really looking forward to experiencing the festival from a different perspective. I’ve been to the festival every year of my life, and it should be a lot of fun to experience it this year as Strawberry Queen. We’ll get to not only see the parade, but also be in the parade. I’ve never done that before. So it’s just going to be a great experience. Focus: Which entertainer are you most excited to see? Fry: Scotty McCreary. I called it. I called it when he was on American Idol. As soon as I saw his audition I said, ‘He’s gonna win.’ I watched American Idol that season basically for him. I’m also looking forward to seeing Casting Crowns. I’ve seen them before and they put on a great concert. And of course, Martina McBride because she’s perfect. Focus: If you wanted to give advice to girls competing for Strawberry Queen next year, what advice would you give them? Fry: Don’t stress out over it. Don’t work so much to prepare that you don’t have fun and your answers are rehearsed. Just have fun and be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not.

Focus: Is there anything that you’re nervous about as Strawberry Queen? Fry: No, I don’t really get nervous. Maybe the polka dancing. I’ve heard that they sling you around everywhere. Focus: What does your family think about all of this? Fry: My sisters have worn my crown around the house more than I have ever worn the crown. My sister was sitting on the couch one morning eating a bowl of cereal, and wearing the crown. I asked her, ‘Do you really need to wear that all the time?’ My dad likes it. He’s always been a great support for me. Last year, when I competed, I was told I could have one try at Calendar Girl and one try at Strawberry Queen, and I had to pick which years I was going to compete for each of them. I wanted to compete in both of them my junior year and I remember after making it to the top 10, but not making it into the court, my dad said, “Well, you can do it again next year if you want to.” [Laughing] So he caved. My mom is just so, so, happy. Everyone in Plant City has called her. So she’s been on the phone a lot talking to everyone. She’s just excited to be there to help us when we need it. She’s taken tons of pictures already. Focus: Tell me about your plans after you graduate this year? Fry: I have been recruited by the University of West Florida, in Pensacola. So I will be swimming for them. I’m a sprinter, so I swim the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free, and I also compete in the relays. I like swimming a lot and I’ve been swimming competitively for about 4 years, which really isn’t a lot compared to everyone else on my team who have been doing it their entire lives. Focus: Do you know what you want to study in college? Fry: Yes, Marketing. I’d like to focus on the agriculture side of marketing. I’d like to come back to Plant City and use what I’ve learned to help other businesses. Focus: Where did you get the interest in agricultural marketing? Fry: Obviously Plant City is known for its agriculture. My dad is in the agriculture business, so that’s probably what inspired me. Focus: And why would you like to come back to Plant City? There are a lot of other towns with agriculture. Fry: Plant City just feels different from everywhere else. You can visit other towns and they’re nice, but they just don’t have the same feel that Plant City does. Plant City has its own distinct way of doing things, and I just love everything about it. Kelsey was a joy to speak with. She’s beautiful, full of energy, sweet, smiles constantly and will represent Plant City very well this year. If you have the opportunity, introduce yourself to her. Focus: Which high school are you attending? Lott: Plant City. Focus: Which year are you in? Lott: I’m a junior. Focus: What are your plans after high school? Lott: I plan to attend a 4-year college, and that will depend on where I get accepted. I want to major in photography. My mom picked up photography a few years ago. She got a really nice camera, so I started messing around with it, and Stephanie Humphrey takes photos with our family and she inspired me to pursue it. I’ve played soccer my whole life but I think I’m getting to the point of wanting to play it more recreationally than competitively, so I don’t think I’ll be playing soccer in college. I think my life is leading me down a different path. Focus: How long have you been interested in competing to be the Florida Strawberry Queen? Lott: I’d never done a pageant before. Two years ago, I’d have never pictured myself in this position. I have brothers and played sports. I’ve been more on the Tom-boy side. Everyone knows that. My mom convinced me to do Calendar Girl in September. I did, and I had a lot of fun and I won Calendar Girl. So we talked about Strawberry Queen and decided I’d do it. Focus: What was a memorable experience for you from the pageant? Lott: It was really fast. I was really nervous for the interview. I was shaking and so scared. I didn’t know these people, and just walking into a room and knowing that these people are going to judge everything I do was a little intimidating. But once I got in there, it was so much fun. The judges had a great time. They were just normal people. They weren’t trying to beat me or catch me on anything. It was a great experience and it helped me to know that doing a pageant isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being yourself and being able to represent Plant City. Focus: What are you looking forward to next? Lott: There are so many things planned for us, but I guess I’m looking forward to the entertainment at the Strawberry Festival, like Hunter Hayes, Justin Moore and of course, Blake Shelton.

Focus: Which high school are you attending? Astin: Durant. Focus: Which year are you in? Astin: I’m a senior. Focus: What are your plans after high school? Astin: I’ve been accepted to the University of Tampa. I plan to attend in the fall and major in Business Marketing, and hopefully earn my Masters degree. I’ve grown up on a family farm, and a lot goes into the business portion of owning a strawberry farm, so I’d like to help out in marketing the berries. Focus: How long have you been interested in competing to be the Florida Strawberry Queen? Astin: I have been to so many pageants over the years, and was always in awe of them. I’ve had aunts and cousins that competed, my mom competed and one of my aunts actually won Strawberry Queen. So it’s just been something that I’ve always looked forward to pretty much my whole life. It’s such an honor. It’s not just about being on the court, but about being able to represent Plant City. Focus: What was a memorable experience for you from the pageant? Astin: I just had a fun time. I got to do the pageant with my best friend, Emily Gonzalez. It was a lot of fun. We had our mirrors decorated, we were on the same side of the room to get dressed and we got to help each other. So it was just a lot of fun to do the pageant with her. Focus: What are you looking forward to next? Astin: I’m excited about being part of the Strawberry Festival family; making new friends, meeting new people. I’m just looking forward to being someone that people will look up to.

Keene: I’m undecided about what I want to pursue. I know I want to go to a major university, and I think that Chemical Engineering could be good for me. I really enjoy science and it’s the subject I really enjoy learning about. I’ve had a really great teacher for the past two years. I also have a new Physics teacher this year. Both of my teachers have just been so good. They make me want to learn. Focus: How long have you been interested in competing to be the Florida Strawberry Queen? Keene: I just always remember seeing the Strawberry Queen and Court when I went to the festival or went to the parade and thought, ‘Wow! That would be so awesome.’ But I never really put a lot of thought to it, because I’m just not a pageant-type of girl. Then I did Calendar Girl and it was a lot of fun, so I decided that I wanted to do Strawberry Queen. I knew it would be such an honor if I were selected to the court. Focus: What was a memorable experience for you from the pageant? Keene: When we were in the sound proof room, which was really the RV parked next to the building, watching the girls trying to get up the narrow stairs in our big dresses was funny. Focus: What are you looking forward to next? Keene: I’m looking forward to seeing the festival from the other side curtain; from behind the scenes.

Focus: Which high school are you attending? Townsend: Strawberry Crest. Focus: Which year are you in? Townsend: I’m a senior. Focus: What are your plans after high school? Townsend: I want to play colligate volleyball, hopefully at Saint Leo University. I’m actually going there for an overnight visit with the team, so that will be a deciding factor. I want to major in International Business because I want the global background. After I graduate from Saint Leo, I’d like to attend the University of Florida to study Environmental Law. I’ve grown up in agriculture and people have always asked me if I wanted to be a farmer when I grow up. I want to stay in agriculture, but I think that job security can be sketchy with a lot of the agriculture industry. So I think that Environmental Law will give me a way to work in agriculture if I want to, or I can use my International Business degree to focus on Environmental Law from a global perspective Focus: How long have you been interested in competing to be the Florida Strawberry Queen? Townsend: I was actually a contestant in the Little Miss Plant City when I was in the fifth grade. I got in the court that year and we did appearances at some of the local events. We’d see the Strawberry Queen and Court and we’d look up to them. So I can remember when we were on stage at the end of our year and the announcer said, “This is going to be the Strawberry Queen and Court one day.” So then I always wanted to move up to the big girl court. Focus: What was a memorable experience for you from the pageant? Townsend: During the interview, the judges noticed in my bio that I show beef cattle at the festival, so they wanted me to tell them about it. One of the judges asked, “What’s a heifer?” I explained that it’s a female cow that hasn’t had a baby. After they have a baby, they’re just a cow. Then it gets a little more awkward and he asks, “And a male is?” I explained that a male that has not been castrated is a bull and a male that has been castrated is a steer. So they all laughed. Then later, one of the female judges asked, “What’s FFA?” They all laughed at her and she said, “Well at least I knew what a heifer was.” It was just funny. Focus: What are you looking forward to next? Townsend: I’m looking forward to the baby parade. I love seeing all the cute babies, and I think it’s one of the chances for us to really interact with the community on a large scale. And some of those children could be future Strawberry Queens.

For example, not only is Plant City home to the annual Florida Strawberry Festival, but it’s considered the “Winter Strawberry Capital of the World.” Plant City’s mild winter climate and sandy soil makes it about the only place in the United States that can produce a strawberry crop during the winter months, making the succulent fruit a vital part of the local economy.

Strawberry Fun Facts An Unknown Origin

According to legend, strawberries were named by 19th century English children who picked the fruit, strung them on grass straws, and sold them as “straws of berries,” while a different naming theory suggests 19th century farmers placed piles of straw around the growing berries to keep them fresh. However, the most widely accepted view is that strawberries were originally named “strewn berries,” as the berries were “strewn” about on the plants. Over time, “strewn berry” morphed into “strawberry.”

Inspirational Indians

Native Americans, who called strawberries “heart-seed berries” for their unique shape, mixed pounded strawberries into their cornmeal bread. After tasting this delicious native staple, colonists created their own version, now known as strawberry shortcake.

Straw…berry?

Botanists do not classify the strawberry as a true berry like the blueberry and cranberry which have seeds on the inside. In fact, an average size strawberry is covered in about 200 dry yellow seeds and is a member of the rose family.

An Interesting History

During medieval times, the English and French decorated their gardens with strawberries. The most prominent royal garden belonged to King Charles V of 14th century France which was comprised of over 1,200 strawberry plants. In addition, Madame Tallien, a member of Napoleon’s court used to bathe in fresh strawberry juice. Finally, 13th century newlyweds in France ate strawberry soup, as it was thought to be an aphrodisiac.

A Sporting Tradition

Almost 60,000 pounds of strawberries are eaten during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships each year, along with over 236,700 ounces of cream.

Fan Favorite

According to a survey conducted by the University of Illinois, over 53 percent of 7- to 9- year-olds chose the strawberry as their favorite fruit. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Agriculture calculated that the annual per capita consumption of fresh and frozen strawberries is 4.85 pounds.

Versatile Fruit

Although the United States is composed of several different climate regions from the cool, rainy northwest to the hot and humid southeast, strawberries are grown in every U.S. state—and every Canadian province! In fact, there are more than 600 varieties of strawberries in existence.

Brandon High Varsity Wrestling Team are the State Champions for the 13th year in a row.

Brandon High School O nce again, I have selected a team from Brandon High School. The wrestling team there just can’t be overlooked. They can’t seem to be beat as well. They are the State Champions for the 13th year in a row. Now that is an impressive record not many teams have. The man behind all the skillful young men is Russ Cozart. His experience in wrestling from Upland High School in California as well as college wrestling at the University of Alabama, has given him all the tools he needs to coach his team to success. When anyone talks about this coach, you only hear

positive words. “Cozart has coaching down to a science, one which wrestlers of all ages can understand and learn from,” says one of his senior wrestlers, Kevin Norstrem. Cozart has coached Norstrem since he was 6 years old. With 37 total years of coaching he has coached 33 of those years at Brandon High School. To have a coach that leads his team to a State Championship 13 years straight says a great deal about him.

Not only does this team hold a State Champion title, they are ranked sixth in the USA. These boys definitely know how to bring it to the mat. The support they get from coaching surely guides them to their success.

Varsity Wrestling Team written By: Deana Garrison

Cozart has plenty of help with his successful team with assistant coaches Bob Hendrickson and Mike Ferrario. They play a major role in supporting Cozart to take the team to the top. Academics are also a major importance to the team and Cozart is proud to say his team holds their grades to a very high standard. In fact, one member holds a 5.7 grade point average. With wrestling practice five days a week, an average that high shows dedication and skill. Their recent State Champion Tournament is the one tournament this year they won’t forget. A hard title to take, this team makes

it look so easy. Senior Kevin Norstrem took his five time State Champion Title and has signed with Virginia Tech. Another senior, Travis Berridge, has signed with California Polytechnic State University. With five very strong senior contenders on the team, Brandon High will surely miss them next year. The Varsity Wrestling Team has certainly represented their High School well. This team is a tough one to beat and it is so pleasing to know that not only do they represent their school well on the mat; they represent them well in all aspects. These young men are respectful and goal oriented. I am sure they make their parents proud. Keep up the great work BHS Wrestlers. You have what it takes.

a very impressive 5.7 grade point average, this young man is 12th out of 465 students in the 2013 class at Brandon High School. To have all of his wrestling skills is one thing, but to carry a high grade point average as well says an awful lot about this young athlete. Academics are very important to him. Not only was he signed on by Virginia Tech’s wrestling team, he was also asked to join the Wakeboard Club as well. At VT, the Wakeboard Team competes in Regionals during the Fall Semester and the Alt Games (formally known as Collegiate Nationals) during the Spring Semester. This water sport is something else exciting for him to get involved with in his new adventure after graduation.

Recently achieving the status of a five time Florida State Wrestling Champion, Norstrem is one tough contender. In five years of wrestling he has only lost four matches. That means he

has won 292 matches in his entire wrestling career so far. Obviously a tough one to beat, he is definitely one that other contenders don’t wish to go up against. recently visited O’Brien’s Irish Pub, located at 701 W Lumsden Road, with my dining partners Edward and Taylor. When we arrived, we were immediately greeted with a very friendly and warm welcome. We started our dinner with appetizers of Tri Colored Tortilla Chips with Salsa and Cheese along with homemade chips that came with Guinness Gravy. Soon after that nice treat, we were greeted with Jerk Wings. These special wings are made with Sean Rice’s special recipe. Rice is co-owner of the restaurant with Tony Mortin. With his perfect Irish accent, Rice began to tell us just how involved his restaurant is in the community. I never realized just how much O’ Brien’s takes part in many different events and causes.

Over the course of 12 years, O’Brien’s has been heavily involved in supporting Little League, school spirit nights, and many charity fundraisers. One fundraiser that inspired them to do more is the Miles for Moffit charity. They get very involved selling rubber ducks that they call “O’ Brien’s Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies.” Their goal this year is to reach $15,000. They also participate in a yard sale with profits going toward the same cause.

While taking all of this in, more food continued to pile up on our table. Greek Salad, Fish and Chips, Shepherd’s Pie, and Emerald Isle Reuben were set out before us. My favorite was the Shepherd’s Pie, and I wasn’t the only one at the table that thought it was a big hit.

If you ever need a place to hold any special event, O’Brien’s is your place. With a nice spacious room, they aim to please to make your event a successful one. I certainly learned

one important thing on our visit…O’Brien’s is definitely a place to enjoy food, music, and great company.

The chef that prepared our meal came out to meet us and get our opinion. He was very cordial and knowledgeable about the meals served at O’Brien’s and made us feel welcomed. Of course, O’Brien’s has some very special upcoming March events. Don’t miss their St. Puppies Day on Sunday, March 10 where anyone can come out, dress up with their dog, and have loads of fun in the process. Their biggest celebration of the year is the St. Patrick’s Day Outdoor Event. This event will have thousands of people all dressed in green celebrating the ever popular St. Patrick’s Day. With great entertainment on hand, this should be a great success. The day will start off with seniors coming on in early to get their corn beef and cabbage for a special rate. O’Brien’s is known to always have special deals for the senior citizens.
