LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
More than ever, it’s important this year to shop local. Good things can happen when you do. Just ask Kelly Morris, owner of Simple Life Outfitters, about the difference community support can make. The family-owned business recently signed with a manufacturer that will market their SLO outdoors apparel line in Bass Pro Shops across the country. With your help, local will soon go national. With successes like that in mind, we hope you’ll browse our annual Holiday Shopping Guide for year-end gift ideas. Purchasing local means no shipping costs and spending less on fuel while you encourage area families who rely on your business. Let’s all make it a point this season to pay blessings forward by spending in our own neighborhood. The Crossing Church, located in Brandon, is also set on paying it forward to the community through its Angel Project, featured in this month’s spotlight interview. Through the Angel Project, the giving church is able to show God’s love in a practical way. Full and partial sponsorships will allow children and families to open Christmas presents on their wish lists and have the best holiday season ever! Read to learn how you can help extend a little holiday cheer. Holiday entertainment for families abounds in our own neighborhood, too. Center Place hosts its annual “Lighting of the Christmas Tree” and Santa’s Holiday Workshop, during which children can create crafts and take photos with their favorite jolly North Pole character. Culturally, everyone will also appreciate the dances, songs, and stories of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa presented in the Santa’s Holiday Revue musical production. Make plans now for these memory-making traditions. A great musical production by the Newsome High School Marching Band and new director Michael Miller also deserves a shout-out. After placing first in several regional competitions, the group’s recent 4th in their class in the Florida High School Marching Band State Championships now ranks the Wolfpack as one of Florida’s top 25 high school marching bands. Nice work, Newsome! Above all, as we close out 2013, Focus would like to say “Nice work” especially to the Greater Brandon communities. By embracing our mission to share your good news, grow your businesses, and benefit your charitable causes, you’ve made this one of our best yet. Because of your support, good things have happened and we are thankful. Here’s to more of the same, for each of us, in the New Year.

NEWSOME HIGH SCHOOL
MARCHING BAND COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE
N
Article by Amanda Deck
ewsome High School is known for its prestigious band program, which qualified for several state final competitions over the past years. So when the position of band director became vacant after the 2012-13 school year, Michael Miller— then Assistant Director of Bands at Robert Vela High School in Edinburg, Texas—knew applying for the job was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. Previously the Director of Bands at Weeki Wachee High School, the experienced musician was looking at getting back to Florida.
“At the beginning of the summer, we set goals and a timeline for the fall season, and the students have consistently met those goals and stayed on track.”
“I jumped right on it,” said Miller. “I knew it was a great school, a great community, and a highly sought after position.”
“In order to qualify for state championships, there is a certain score a band must reach,” said Miller. “We did that at our first show.”
Miller—who holds a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Florida—understood the job would present great challenges, especially maintaining the band’s high standard of excellence. However, it looks like he’s overcoming all obstacles as the band has exceeded his expectations.
Following the Tarpon Springs festival, the 123-member ensemble placed first at Lakewood Ranch High School’s Music in Motion competition on Saturday, November 2—receiving every caption award (Best Music, Best Visual, Best Color Guard, etc). In addition, the band also received straight “Superior” ratings earlier that day at the
The Newsome High School “Wolfpack” Marching Band kicked off competition season by participating in the Tarpon Springs Outdoor Music Festival on Saturday, October 19 where they placed third among 27 teams with their performance “Immortal.” During the event, they qualified for the state championships. Florida Band Masters Association Music Performance Assessment at Bloomingdale High School. Only six other Hillsborough County schools (Bloomingdale, Gaither, Blake, Leto, Steinbrenner, Wharton) received “Superior” ratings in all band sections. On Saturday, November 16, the Wolfpack
band competed at the Fall Music Games at Riverview High School where they placed first overall yet again. The marching band season concluded on Saturday, November 23 as the group placed fourth in the 4A class at the Florida Marching Band State Championships at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, making them one of top 25 high school marching bands in Florida. Miller owes his band’s success to the supportive community, supportive parents... and especially the hardworking students. “I’m proud of my students’ perseverance through the transition of having a new director,” said Miller. “As with any sports team or band that spends so much time together, students tend to be very loyal to their teachers and coaches, more so the upperclassmen because they’ve been here a long time. But they’ve allowed me to come in and have trusted me without really knowing me. We’ve been able to be successful because of that. It could have been a lot different if the students didn’t accept me, but they have and I’m proud of that maturity.” Congratulations to the Newsome High School “Wolfpack” Marching Band for a successful competition season. It is apparent Miller will continue leading the band program toward excellence.
During competition season, the Newsome High School Band performed “Immortal,” based off the music of Beethoven. Using pieces such as “Symphony No. 7” and “Pathetique Sonata,” the music depicts the eternal unrest of a group of vampires. Photo courtesy of Denise Melone

LET THE HOLIDAYS RING
CENTER PLACE OFFERS FUN ACTIVITIES ALL SEASON LONG Article by Darcie Jarrett

T
he holiday season is in full force and Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association wants to be with you throughout the memory making. Right in the heart of Brandon, the center is located at 619 Vonderburg Dr. and shares the same building as the Brandon Regional Library. The association started the season a little early this year with their 3rd annual Holiday Tea, which took place on November 24. What the center considers to be their official “kickoff ” is their “Lighting of the Christmas Tree” event. The lighting will be held on December 4 at 7 p.m. and is the 29th year the center has held this free event. Marketing Director Lisa Rodriguez has been with the organization over 30 years and explained this festivity as “a way for the community to open up the holiday season, come enjoy some fellowship with their neighbors and friends and see the youth entertain.” Over 10 performing groups— consisting of dancers and singers—are on the lineup for the night’s celebration, including the “Ambassadors” from Bloomingdale High School. Rodriguez also confirmed a return visit from a very important person from the North Pole. “The kids always look forward to seeing Santa,” said Rodriguez, “because it’s usually their first visit with Santa for the season.”
The special night will be co-sponsored by Cox Electric and The Community Roundtable. The center will also host an Open House of their Gift Shop on December 5. Between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., they will offer a 25 percent storewide discount on all boutique items. On December 7, there will be a Santa’s Holiday Workshop for ages 5 and up. Tickets are $10 per child and the kids will participate in crafts, cookie decorating, and, of course, time with Santa. And finally, on December 13 at 7 p.m., Stage Productions will present a musical called “Santa’s Holiday Revue.” Tickets for the show are $6 per person for members and $7 per person for non-members. According to the center’s synopsis, “This jubilee creates a memorable and heart-warming experience that celebrates the true spirit of cultural diversity.” All tickets are on sale now and, especially for the musical, will go fast! “We do [holiday events] for the community,” said Rodriguez, “because we love the community in which we live.” For more information, or ticket sales, you can call Center Place at 813-685-8888 or visit their website at www.centerplacebrandon.org. SIMPLE LIFE OUTFITTERS VALRICO CLOTHING BRAND TO INVADE BASS PRO SHOPS NATIONWIDE
W
Article by Amanda Deck
hether relaxing by a fire or casting a fishing line from a boat, Kelly Morris loves gathering with family and friends in the great outdoors, where he doesn’t have to worry about those everyday troubles that get people down. In other words, he enjoys the simple life. As a result, Morris established the Simple Life Outfitters, a reflection of his love for the great outdoors and his hard working, downto-earth family.
like Ericca Hope Garrison’s “Ego Girl” and Eric Epps “Wicked Reel.”
Located in Valrico on Highway 60 next to Sweetbay, the Simple Life Outfitters sells a variety of popular outdoors apparel for men, women, and children including Mossy Oak, Realtree, and Bucked Up and local brands
And soon people across the country can get their hands on the Simple Life brand as, in early November, Morris signed a deal with an Oklahoma-based manufacturer that will place his clothing in Bass Pro Shops around the United States starting January 1, 2014.
In addition to today’s most popular brands, The Simple Life Outfitters carries its own unique line of custom products featuring their fish, deer, pirate, or clay shooter logos. People in Valrico to Brandon to Plant City—all over Hillsborough County—can be spotted wearing Simple Life Outfitters apparel.
“In the stores, Simple Life will be right next to the Duck Dynasty brand,” said Morris, “right up there with the big boys!” Yet what excites Morris most is showing off his new line of “Kickin’ Back” short and long-slee ved T-shirts. Each shirt in the series will feature a Simple Life Outfitters logo on the front and a detailed outdoor scene on the back that depicts what the simple life is all about... just Kickin’ Back! All Simple Life Outfitters apparel will also contain a tag inviting customers to the brand’s Facebook page. “I want to invite everyone to send me their ideas on what they think the simple life is all about,” said Morris. “I want to see what everyone’s doing on the weekends with
family and friends. I want everyone to be a part of the simple life.” Morris has been working with Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris since early spring and ever since his Simple Life Outfitters logo has been flying off the shelves at his shop. “It was always a dream of mine for the brand to be where it’s going, but I never figured it would happen like this,” said Morris. “The designs were created by me, but where the brand is at now has nothing to do with me. I appreciate all the support from the community, all the family, friends, and Facebook friends who have supported me. Hopefully I can find a way to pay back everything the community has done...I can’t take any credit for this.” After the beginning of the year, Morris will be busy traveling around the country promoting his brand and communicating the Simple Life’s message. “It’s going to be cool just to go into the stores and soak it all in,” said Morris. “I can’t wait to introduce the brand to people just like me.” Morris continued, “I’ve got a bunch of things to do next year, but I never want to change. I just want to stay true to who I am and keep it real.” Before the Kickin’ Back series hits Bass Pro Shops stores, get your shirts at the Simple Life Outfitters’ retail location. They’ll be in for the Christmas shopping season. Or just check out everything else Morris has to offer—from T-shirts and sweatshirts, to cornhole equipment and koozies.

“Hillsborough County, especially eastern Hillsborough around Plant City, Fishhawk, Lithia, Pinecrest, and the Brandon and Strawberry Crest areas—these people are so good around here,” said Morris. “They have each other’s back and they’ve showed me they have my back. You can’t go anywhere and find people like this—it’s hometown, Southern hospitality.

Hundreds of churches representing a countless number of denominations line the streets of Hillsborough County. Some are small, tight-knit communities while some host thousands of people from all walks of life. Each Sunday morning, churches across the nation open their doors, hoping to not only deliver a fresh word to seasoned members, but also to breathe new life into someone new, someone who may be searching for something to fill that void that only Jesus Christ can.
The Crossing Church, with its main location situated at 10130 Tuscany Ridge Drive in Tampa, is looking to do just that with a primary goal to reach more people for Jesus Christ. In other words, their purpose is to fulfill God’s Great Commission, in which Jesus states in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” The Crossing Church also strives to follow the Great Commandment found in Matthew 22:37-40, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart...soul...and mind. This is the
first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Prior to each Christmas season, The Crossing Church prepares to touch the lives of their neighbors by relaying God’s message of hope in a relevant and practical way with the Angel Project. Through this annual way of giving, Crossing Church families adopt families in need from local elementary schools. “This is about the sixth year we’ve been doing this,” said Angel Project team member Donna Ready. “The first year we
helped 35 families—approximately 60-75 children—from Clair Mel Elementary. This year we are helping over 300 kids from over 100 families.” Numbers have increased as the project now includes children from Potter Elementary School. Families are chosen by school social workers and teachers who see a need. To adopt a family, church members can click the meettheneed. org link, an online tool that empowers churches and charities to communicate needs in the community, on the Crossing Church website. The website lists each individual child and

items off their “wish list” as well as an overall family need. For example, a boy’s wish list may include video games and action figures, while a girl’s wish list can contain art supplies and make up. Each child’s list also displays specific clothing needs such as shirts, shoes, and pants. A “family need” may include cleaning supplies, cookware, and other household items of necessity. “The most immediate need for children is warm winter clothing, which many of them see as a luxury,” said Donna. Donna also explained how the families are in critical need of items we seem to take for granted such as laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, hygiene products...and especially beds and blankets. “Last year we purchased bunk beds and blankets for a grandmother raising ten children in government housing,” said Donna. Other high priority items include bicycles and helmets.
guardians don’t have vehicles so a lot of children ride their bikes to school.” In fact, Clair Mel Elementary School has created a wish list of its own. The school is asking for 50 new bike helmets for students in need. Walmart and Target gift cards can also be purchased so families can buy groceries. Although she hopes the church can fulfill every item on a family’s wish list, Donna’s main goal through Angel Project is to extend Jesus Christ’s message of hope. “Being a retired teacher, I know our nation is not in good shape as we continue to shy away from the biblical principles our country was built upon,” said Donna. “Angel Project gives us an opportunity to speak into the lives of families in need, invite them to church
where their children can be taught well and their lives will be changed forever. We want to show them there is a better way to live life.” Last year, the church implemented an Angel Project party where adopted families could receive their gifts and meet the church families. “Good relationships were built that way, their lives are changing, and we are agents of that change,” said Donna. Donna continued, “This is the most pure-heart church I’ve ever seen, one that really loves people.” If you’d like to be a part of Angel Project, Donna invites you to a Crossing Church Sunday service which takes place at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. (Spanish), and 5 p.m. Share more than just a present this Christmas season. Give the gift of life.

About Crossing Church
Apart from the Word of God, The Crossing Church— an independent, non-denominational institution— believes a strong faith relies heavily on the building of strong relationships. In order to fulfill that need, the church offers “LifeGroups.” Usually consisting of 10 to 12 people, LifeGroups allow The Crossing Church to effectively disciple all members of the congregation. It’s a time outside the traditional Sunday morning service where relationships are built on a more intimate level, where people can pray together, study together, fellowship together, and care for one another in the relaxed atmosphere of a leader’s home. The Crossing Church LifeGroups meet all across the Tampa Bay area, from St. Petersburg to Lakeland with many in between. Sunday morning ministries for “Crossing Kids” includes Jungle Jam for Babies through PreK and
Breakaway for those in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Emerge Student Ministries encompasses those in 6th through 12th grades with high schoolers meeting on Sunday nights at 5 p.m. and middle schoolers meetings on Sunday mornings at 11 a.m. Furthermore, the Sub30 Young Adult Ministry meets on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. for 18 through 30 year olds. The Crossing Church spends a great deal of their time and resources working beyond the four walls of the church building. They have united with other area churches to bring help and support straight to people and local agencies who need it most, wherever they are found among neighbors, through community ministries, or on overseas missions. The church gives a minimum of 10 percent of its budget to the needs of people across the street and around the world.
The Crossing Church began in April 2005 when members of Crosstown Community Church and The Pointe Church merged. Because it emphasizes building up the Kingdom of God locally and worldwide and prayer as communicating with God—not just sending up requests but also listening to His guidance for daily life—The Crossing Church has seen substantial growth during its short history, allowing it to offer four Sunday services at its main location (9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. for Spanish, and 5 p.m.). In addition, the church also opened a SouthShore Campus in Ruskin that meets at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sundays. “The Crossing Church is certainly alive and thriving,” said Pastor Dumas. “I want to invite you to join us at one of our multiple services and locations. Our vision is to plan a new campus in your community. God is doing something special here at The Crossing Church and we want you to be a part of it all. I look forward to seeing you soon.”

subterranean termites as well. In addition, TNT Termite and Pest Control conducts Wood Destroying Organism (WDO) inspections for prospective real estate buyers, sellers, and lenders. Before starting his own pest control business almost three years ago, Ed worked for a national company where he received countless hours of training and experience. “With my husband’s knowledge of the industry, he is definitely a good choice for your pest control needs,” said Bonnie. “Working for a national company, Ed received the knowledge of what works and what doesn’t work. So when we started TNT, we knew the different services we were going to offer based on the most effective solutions for a home or business.” When needing to eliminate pests from a home, many customers can be even more concerned about the chemicals entering their living space. However, TNT is dedicated to providing customers with safe solutions that work. Bonnie continued, “When treating the inside of your home, we’re going to utilize gels and baits and put them in the areas where the bugs live, not where you and your family live.” Providing “Dynamite Customer Service” has been key to TNT Termite and Pest Control’s success. Not only do they eliminate bugs, they also consult with their customers, educating them on how to identify different species of pests, their tendencies, and how to keep them from invading again.

ypically when the winter months approach, Floridians can expect lower temperatures and less precipitation. Yet if the current weather conditions are any indication, Florida may experience a mild winter this season. When the air is warm and the humidity is high, you can be certain that unwanted pests can cross your welcome mat and invade your home or business if you’re not prepared. With over 25 years of experience in the pest control industry, Ed Tekampe of TNT Termite and Pest Control can help you say goodbye to those pesky ants, termites, roaches, and other nasty bugs.
“We had been having problems with our current pest provider for numerous months, so finally we had TNT come out and take
a look at our buildings,” said a pleased customer in an online testimonial. “They were professional, thorough and the cost savings were substantial.” Another customer added, “We called TNT after seeing a few large spiders in our home. It was their first visit and they were extremely thorough and knowledgeable. They checked out every crevice of our home and professionally answered all of my questions. Haven’t seen a spider or any other pesky visitors since their service. Highly recommend and will use them again. Two thumbs up!” TNT Termite and Pest Control—led by Ed and Bonnie Tekampe, along with their son, Andy—is truly a hometown, family business known for doing the job well and doing it right. “You’re always going to get the straight and honest answer with us,” said Bonnie, “and we’ll be there if you need us. Even if we’re slammed with business, if someone is having a challenge we’ll be there for them.” Don’t let bugs do any more damage to your home. TURKEY CREEK TROJANS
JV FOOTBALL TEAM SPORTS TEAM OF THE MONTH
T
he Turkey Creek Trojans Junior Varsity Football Team is definitely worthy of the Team of the Month title this month. This undefeated team showed their skills from day one. They only gave up eight points during the regular season, six in playoffs, and 12 during the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl, held on Saturday, November 23 against the Brandon Bears, was the biggest highlight of the season. The stands were packed with fans as many came to watch the final event against two undefeated teams that had not played against each other this season until that day. Much talk brewed in the air especially since the Bears almost didn’t get to play due to talk of broken rules by a team of cheerleaders in their league. Nevertheless, both teams were there for the showdown. It was time for one of the undefeated teams to break their flawless record. The Trojans were determined that it wasn’t going to be them. At the end of the game, the score was tied 1212 and the teams were headed into overtime which then led into double overtime. It was clear that tension was definitely in the air. As
the tension built, so did the determination that drives this team. They pulled it together as a team and reached their ultimate goal… the Super Bowl trophy. In speaking with different players and parents of this team, it is clear that coach Dub Atkins is one strong, determined, and kid-centered coach. He cares about each child on his team more than just a football game. He looks at the whole picture. He makes his team bring their report cards to practice. If a player is not doing well in school, he would not play in that next game…no matter what. It works! Not one player was sitting out at the Super Bowl…why? Because this team is made up of high achieving students who not only work hard on the field, but also work hard in the classroom. Atkins is not a stranger to the schools or the teachers. He has been known throughout the years to go up to the schools for conferences for his players and some teachers have him on their cell phones. I ask you…how many coaches go out of their way like that? I can’t think of many.
Article by Deana Garrison His attitude shows through the boys and their actions. They work hard and stick together. They don’t want to let each other down. When a play doesn’t go the way they want it, they pep each other up and work harder for the next play. That teamwork definitely showed in the Super Bowl. With Atkins’ fourth straight year winning the Super Bowl, he and his players must be doing something right!
coaches this year. They are what led us to the championship. Coach Dub is a good coach. He puts school first before us playing football.” The coaches that worked hard with Coach Dub this year for the JV football team are John Carter, Rabul Cantu, Kenny Brown, Jack Thompson, and Greg Ruth. Congratulations to this fine group of young men. They represented their coaches and the Turkey Creek Trojans well.

SPORTS » ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
TYLER PICKRELL ATHLETE OF THE MONTH T o be an Athlete of the Month for FOCUS Magazine means that athlete gives 110 percent on the field and is a well-rounded individual who strives hard to do their best in all that they do. Well folks, I have found the athlete that fits that description. Number 29 on Turkey Creek Trojans Junior Varsity Football team, Tyler Pickrell, has earned that status. This young man plays several roles on the team as receiver, tight end, and corner.
Playing since he was four years old, Pickrell is no stranger to football. Learning how to play on a flag football team at that very early age set the stage for this now 13-year-old athlete. Developing his skills throughout the years and improving with every game, he has truly grown in his ability and love for the game. He admits, “I have gotten better over the years.” He says that football has made him a better person and he likes the feeling he gets from it. He hopes to one day play in the NFL. Pickrell definitely showed how much skill he had on Saturday, November 23 at the Super Bowl against the Brandon Bears. He got many big hits on the outside stopping some major plays for the other team. His best play was at the end of the game which concluded in double overtime. After Pickrell’s team scored a touchdown and the Bears had the ball,
Article by Deana Garrison Pickrell knew the only way that team could beat them now would be if they had a chance to score another touchdown. Pickrell stopped that from happening when he intercepted a pass. He thought, “Oh my God, I caught it,” while the crowd went crazy. Determination is the key to his success and he proved just that during that play.
Grades are a very important part of an Athlete of the Month. When an athlete is great on the field it is great to see the same in school as well. Pickrell shows just that. His academics are just as important to him as the football game. That says a lot.
This young man has the attitude, determination, and drive that has made him a huge success on the field as well as off the field. He has truly earned the title of Athlete of the Month. Well deserved.
The Super Bowl trophy that Pickrell received is not his first one. In fact, he has three others. He seems to look a challenge head on and do his part as a team player to reach the ultimate goal. Pickrell says he didn’t do it alone. He says he has a great team and great coaches and knows that is how he got to the Championships. Will Mitchell, the quarterback for the Turkey Creek Trojans said, “He is a great player.” Mitchell said that Pickrell is his receiver when he is quarterback. They seem to make a perfect fit for the team together. Pickrell made it completely clear that his biggest support is his family. He says his family has been a major support throughout his football years and has also guided and helped him in school with his grades. He couldn’t narrow it down to just one person because his family works together to help him.

He continued, “I work so hard on each menu item. I’ve had things on the menu, but I’ve taken them off because I wasn’t 100 percent satisfied with them, like our hot dogs and pizzas. But now, we’ve just added those items back onto the menu because we went to work on them. We wanted to get them just right.” Kane’s dedication to providing high-quality food has caught the attention of several area businesses and organizations. Big City Grill provides daily lunches for several private schools in Brandon, and has created catering packages, box lunches, and platters for Anytime Fitness, the YMCA, Center Place, the library, and local doctor’s offices and law groups.
