Brandon has become a hotspot for musical talent and this month we revisited former Brandon area resident and current singing star Melissa Brethauer to see where her career is taking her. Not only is she set to release her second CD in the spring, but Brethauer is gaining an international following after performing at several songwriter festivals and workshops around the country. This month we also highlight the Bluegrass music event hosted by the First United Methodist Church of Brandon. The event is to be headlined by A-listers Dale Ann Bradley, Phil Leadbetter, and Steve Gulley. And don’t miss out on a performance by our area’s own Walker Brothers band.

Business: COX Electric

Dining: Keith’s Oaks Bar and Grill
Not only has COX Electric been involved in the large-scale remodels of many area McDonald’s restaurants, but the successful company has also helped improve other local and nationally-recognized businesses. Because they are a multi-licensed company--in electrical, sign installation, and lighting--COX Electric is a one-stop shop for all commercial and industrial electrical issues.
The Oaks Bar and Grill, the casual, downhome Florida-inspired restaurant located on the corner of Lithia Pinecrest Road and Brandon Boulevard (SR 60), has been known for its excellent food, relaxed atmosphere, and friendly service since its inception. And new owner Keith Askew is dedicated to continuing The Oaks’ reputation as one of Brandon’s favorite family-friendly dining establishments after purchasing it just two months ago. Now known as Keith’s Oaks Bar and Grill, the restaurant is still serving its top-notch signature seafood selections and much, much more.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
Welcome to the New Year…and, of course, to our resolutions! The Focus staff and families have a common desire. We’d like to become healthier in the next 12 months. And we can imagine we’re not alone in this determination. We plan to make wiser choices with our diet, minimize stress, exercise more, and be outdoors more often for large doses of our famous sunshine. To give us all a jumpstart on accomplishing these resolutions, we invited four trainers to offer their best fitness tips this month. Professionals from Anytime Fitness, Rob Z Fitness, Shapes and Youfit focused on topics like Choosing a Workout Plan, Maintaining Motivation, Using Proper Form and Technique and Time Management. Ultimately, we believe the feature’s read will motivate us all to success on this never-ending journey of lifelong health. For encouragement, we think you’ll also enjoy reading of the weight-loss success two locals achieved in 2013. The good news is that Melissa Estep and Josh Sprigg did it the hard way, through workouts and nutrition changes. Another great way to affect overall health and lessen stress is to enjoy the abounding artistic and musical talent in the Greater Brandon area. Our recommendation for the evening of January 12 is a Bluegrass and Gospel concert at Brandon’s First United Methodist Church, which features A-listers Dale Ann Bradley, Phil Leadbetter, Steve Gulley and our own homegrown-but-nationally-renowned Walker Brothers Band. Since encouragement for the arts is good food for the soul, we’ve also included an update on another musical rising star, the Riverview High School and UCF graduate who now lives in Atlanta—songwriter/vocalist/guitarist/pianist Melissa Brethauer. Additionally, this issue features two businesses that will appreciate your continued support in 2014, too. For some healthy meals, visit the Keith’s Oaks Bar and Grill and look to COX Electric for expert help with your home or business improvement projects. Both are resolved to provide great price/value and incomparable service. Check them out soon! Together, let’s make 2014 our most prosperous yet. PROSPERO AÑO!

THE WALKER BROTHERS HOMEGROWN BLUEGRASS HERITAGE M usic fans are in for a serious treat when The Walker Brothers entertain as supporting band for an upcoming major performance featuring bluegrass A-listers Dale Ann Bradley, Phil Leadbetter and Steve Gulley. First United Methodist Church of Brandon will host the event set for Sunday, January 12 at 6 p.m in its sanctuary at 121 N. Knights Avenue, just north of SR 60. Concert attendees will be in awe of the talent on stage that night.
For those unfamiliar with the above mentioned bluegrass royalty, here’s a quick overview of the friends. • Dale Ann Bradley: 4-time International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) “Female Vocalist of the Year” • Steve Gulley: Guitarist, IBMA “Songwriter of the Year” and multi-time nominee for the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBMA) “Male Vocalist of the Year (founder of Mountain Heart) • Phil Leadbetter: 2005 IBMA and 2-time SPBGMA “Dobro Player of the Year” (performed with The Whites of Grand Ole Opry fame)
Article by Cheryl Johnston Thankfully for us, The Walker Brothers are among the next generation of nationally known bluegrass musicians—an impressive act in and of themselves. Cory (banjo & dobro), Jarrod (mandolin) and Tyler (guitar) are lifetime Lithia residents and Durant High School graduates (Cory 2008, Jarrod 2010, Tyler graduates 2014). Cory, a 2013 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and Jarrod, who will graduate MTSU this spring, have played the Grand Ole Opry several times as Cory and Jarrod Walker, and also with other bands. The two
performed on a 2004 CBS national television special with Keith Urban and on ABC with Earl Scruggs and Ricky Skaggs in 2005. Presently they play for national touring groups Sierra Hull and Highway 111 and Missy Raines and the New Hip, respectively. The brothers also opened the CMA FANFEST in Titan Stadium in 2004 and played at Titan again in 2005, with approximately 40,000 attendees both times. They have performed nationally as well as internationally in Canada, France, Italy and Japan. The New Branches album, one of their three CDs, featured guest artists Ricky Scaggs and his band, country artist Chad Brock, and Phil Leadbetter with members of Mountain Heart, among others. It received extensive national airplay and on Sirius Satellite Radio as well. Locals will probably recognize the young brothers as Strawberry Festival featured entertainers in Plant City from 2009-2012. According to the group’s father, David Walker, “Phil Leadbetter and his wife have become good friends over the years, helping the boys. Last year when Phil and Steve were here, our FUMCB Director of Music Ministries, Jeff Brant, attended the second show and offered FUMCB space. Musicians support each other in times of trouble, such as during Phil’s victory over cancer.” Brant explained the purpose of the concert. “Southern Gospel and Bluegrass music have always stemmed from a steep tradition of Christ-followers who witness through their music to their own faith and testimonies of God’s miracles. We not only hope to hear great Bluegrass from some of the best in the business, but also to bring awareness of our church.” “We strive for everyone to feel welcome here,” he continued, “and we would love to have them be part of our Family of Faith. We pray someone who needs to hear about God will be present, and even perhaps begin a new journey in knowing the God who loves them.” For those attending, the concert costs will be covered by audience donations, as people feel led to contribute at the door, both before and after the concert. T
he Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center, located at 405 Beverly Boulevard, is a community nonprofit organization dedicated to impacting lives daily through superior educational and athletic programming that enhances physical, mental, and spiritual well being. The organization is definitely achieving its main goal as it’s been recognized by its Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce peers as a 2009 and 2010 Small Business of the Year. Not only is BSAC providing healthy outlets of entertainment for children, but those youth are truly standing out. In fact, BSAC has had much to celebrate over the past few months. The Tampa Bay Times recently named Maddie Hess—member of BSAC’s Blue Wave competative swim team—the Hillsborough County Swimmer of the Year. The Newsome High School junior, who was also selected as the TBT Swimmer of the Year in 2012, won three gold medals and a bronze at the Class 4A FHSAA State Championship meet on Saturday, November 16. She’s now won back-to-back state titles in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. We’re looking forward to even more success from this young lady during her senior season. Congrats Maddie! Maddie also made FHSAA 4A State Championship headlines with her Blue Wave and Newsome High School teammates Sarah Neely and Lauren Harper by capturing the gold medal in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Overall, eleven Blue Wave Swim Team members qualified for the 2013 State Championship meets which included students from Steinbrenner, Newsome, Strawberry Crest, and Riverview High
Schools: Ashley Kubel, Derek Mitchell, Zack Kitzis, Skylar Finan, Cole Wisecarver, Lauren Harper, Gigi Gibbs, Sarah Neely, Louiza Garayeva, Angie Gallastegui, and Maddie Hess. Two Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center Team Colwill Divers and Bloomingdale High School competitors also did extremely well in the state championship dive meet. Jesse Mazen placed 15th and proceeded to the final event while Stacy Weaver came in 21st. The two divers are coached by Team Colwill head coach and former Olympian Chris Colwill and Bloomingdale High School dive coach Rob Mazen. The Colwill Team also excelled during the WCF Christmas Invitational meet held in Orlando on December 7 and 8. Aiden Sadler (7 and under) placed first in the 3-meter and 1-meter; Jesse Mazen (14-18) placed first in the 3-meter; Alaina Hall (12-13) placed second in 1-meter; Gen Lefebvre (14-18) placed third in 1-meter; and Kayla McComb (14-18) and Caitlin Romberger (12-13) placed fifth in their respective categories. Apart from Swimming and Diving, the Saladino Baseball Academy also had much to celebrate on November 23 as the 11U team placed second at the GSA Fall Classic Tournament held in Tampa. Whether aquatics, tennis, gymnastics, or baseball, the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center has much to offer the youth... and adults...of the Brandon area. MELISSA BRETHAUER
SONGWRITER CONTINUES TO GAIN AUDIENCE Article by Cheryl Johnston
Three years ago FOCUS featured the musically talented Melissa Brethauer after the release of her first CD, “Waiting.” Since that time, she’s earned her Bachelor’s degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Central Florida in December 2011, married in September 2012, and moved to Atlanta for her husband’s work, all while her popularity continues to grow. “Being a Florida girl, Atlanta took a lot of getting used to,” Brethauer explained, “but I’ve grown to like it here. I just miss the beach!” Brethauer worked for a year as assistant manager at an Urgent Care clinic but decided it wasn’t her best fit. “I found myself more stressed than happy about my job,” she explained. “I now assist a luxury residential realtor, which allows me independence and flexibility, so when things come up with my music, I’m able to travel and take time off from work without any problem.” Classically trained on the piano, Brethauer, 24, also plays guitar and composes. Recognition from industry veterans for her thoughtful lyrics, creative arrangements, versatile vocals and instrumental talents have resulted in invitations to the meritbased Young Songwriters Workshop in Nashville, the Deland Original Music Festival, songwriter festivals in Sarasota and Pensacola and the prestigious Frank Brown’s International Songwriters Festival. “I’ve had a blast playing so many venues and events these past three years,” she said. “I’ve worked hard to make a name for myself in the metro Atlanta area along with music connections and I’m thrilled for the local community support. Things have been very well—2013 has been my busiest year yet and I’ve finally launched some merchandise. Whether the audience size is one or 300, it’s another opportunity to connect with people and showcase my songwriting.” Listeners from around the world have purchased Brethauer’s soft and soulful 11-track debut CD, recorded at Crystal Blue Sound Studios in Valrico. Thanks to iTunes Europe, digital download activity overseas has also been strong.

According to Brethauer, her second CD is still a work in progress. “I’m recording in Atlanta and writing a lot more. My hopes are to have a finished product by late Spring of 2014. I’m way overdue as far as getting some newer material out there, but I’ve matured as a musician and writer since my last album, so this next record will surely reflect that.” “Waiting” reviewers and those attending performances have compared her range and style to Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys. Genres include pop with R&B elements, soft rock, a little country and some touches of Christian inspiration. The Riverview High School graduate’s ties to Hillsborough County remain strong. “I still have a handful of close friends that live in Brandon and

We see guys and gals com e into the gym all the time thinking bigger is bett er. They go for the heaviest weight swinging it around thinking they are doing it all properly. Inst ead follow this quote we live by: “Leave your ego at the door.” It is true that you have to lift heavy weights to increase muscle strength and size. However, without proper form , you will just end up hurting yourself, preventing you to come into the gym and achieve your goals. It is not a race—nice, slow, controlled reps will give you the best results. It makes us laugh when we watch guys load up the ben ch press, find a spotter, then start bouncing the wei ght off their chest. This is not correct at all. Or when we see guys and gals go into the squat rack with all the plates they could fit on the bar but only doing half the rep. Remember, half reps equals half results. Use weight you can control, along with a healthy diet, and we promise you will achieve your goals much fast er.

T IME MANAGEMENT
with Kathy Ankrom and Ann Gilbert
Apart from their actual careers, women possess multiple other jobs. They’re a wife, a mom, a daugh ter, a cook, a maid, a financial planner, and so much more. And committing to making a total lifestyle change is yet anoth er “job” women take on, just another thing they have to schedule in their already-filled planners. Because women are so challenged for time, when they take a trip to the gym they tend to choose the easiest task—the treadmill—thinking it will help them lose weight and reach their fitness goals. And on the other end, there are women who think they need to do more to get result s when in the long run they just end up getting burnt out after a couple of weeks. Yet a fitness club offers so much more than a treadmill and a few dumbbells. It’s important for women—and men—to be micromanaged by a trainer during the first steps of a lifestyle change. They need someone there by their side showing them what to do and how to do it. They need a workout plan tailored to their goals that will allow them the least amou nt of time to get results. People can do less with effective, specific, budgeted exercise that’s full of variety. No more wandering around the gym wondering what to do next—no more time wasted—when you employ the guidance of a knowledgeable, motivating trainer.

STAYING MOTIVATED with Mika McGee
How many times have you joined a gym or started a fitness routine, stayed devoted for all of two weeks, and all of a sudden its New Years again and you’re making the same resolution. We are creatures of habit, and when it comes to staying motivated there has to be some positive reinforcement along the way. First off, let’s face it, exercise can be boring, time consuming, and sometimes just sucks! This all may reign true, but being unhealthy, not having enough energy, and dealing with obesity sucks even more. There is hope, however, on making this fitness venture less painful and maybe even enjoyable. One of the first mistakes we make when starting a program is thinking we can go from not exercising at all to hitting the gym everyday and miraculously seeing results in an unrealistic amount of time. Set small goals for yourself on a monthly basis; start with a realistic amount of times per week—perhaps three times a week for the first month. Statistics show if you exercise or hit the gym at least eight times in the first month you are 90 percent likely to keep it up for a full year. Spice up your workouts and stay away from doing the same boring routine every day. Fitness centers now offer so much more than just machines, and like Anytime Fitness, most include group fitness classes as part of your membership. Working out in a group will allow you to push yourself harder, have a certified instructor coaching pushing you through your workout…plus you may even meet people and have fun! To stay motivated we need to see and feel results. I’m not talking about stepping on a scale every day and thinking you’re going to drop ten pounds in a week. Ask one of your trainers or a staff member at the center if they offer free assessments. Anytime Fitness trainers recommend getting an assessment once a month which includes measurements, body fat analysis, and overall fitness coaching for free. One thing I know for sure is if you see results, it drives you to keep going. Remember these three key notes: variety, accountability, and realistic goals. Working out and staying motivated can be a challenge for a beginner who’s never stepped foot in the gym or the gym rat that has been doing it for years and is burnt out. There is always going to be an excuse to not get in your exercise routine, but all we are asking is 30 minutes of every 48 hours to commit to yourself. Make time, keep your eye on the prize, and stop making excuses. Happy New Year!

We live in an era where most people want to take the easy way out. Instead of putting in hours at the gym or cutting out the junk from their diets, many Americans opt to put their faith in the latest miracle pills or vibrating belts to lose weight and sculpt muscle. Yet according to fitness and nutrition experts, these effortless weight loss alternatives aren’t effective. In fact, nothing is more effective than old-fashioned hard work and determination. And it’s worth it, because engaging in daily moderate physical activity and watching what you eat can drastically improve your quality of life. In order to motivate readers to lead healthier lifestyles, FOCUS Magazine spoke with real people who used real exercise to achieve real results—Melissa Estep and Josh Sprigg. Hear their stories, their goals, their challenges and maybe their experiences can help you along your weight loss journey.
FOCUS MAGAZINE BRANDON JANUARY 2014

FOCUS Magazine: Tell me a little about yourself. Melissa Estep: I am originally from Rantoul, Illinois. I grew up there with my parents and my younger sister. I played softball for 13 years. It was my passion growing up. There was nothing like being on a softball field. I went to Illinois State University. My favorite time of life was college as I loved the social scene and my course work. I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Social Work and minor in Sociology. I enjoy working with children and their families and doing what I can to help them. My internship was with an agency which was part adoption and part counseling in BEFORE AFTER sexual abuse. I have also worked as a group home worker, case manager, and foster care worker. I have worked with children in day cares and was a nanny for a bit. I moved to Valrico in 2002 and have loved every minute of it. I love hockey and baseball. I love hanging out with friends and family. I love sunsets and beaches. I have been a member of Shapes Gym since 2006. Josh Sprigg: I have lived in the State of Florida for most of my life, but like most people, I am not from Florida originally. I was actually born in England but left soon afterward. Both of my parents are retired military so we moved every few years. In my life, I’ve lived in multiple states and even a couple foreign countries, but most of my time has been spent here in Florida. For most of my working life, I worked retail and call center jobs. While working, I went back to school and completed both my associates and my bachelor’s degrees. Roughly a month after completing my bachelor’s degree, I got my goal job within the information technology field. Since then, I’ve started working on my master’s degree and working towards my ultimate goal of becoming a pilot. FOCUS: Describe your lifestyle previous to your weight loss? Melissa: My weight has always been up and down—a constant battle. I was active in my childhood and played sports, but I constantly battled with ways to express my feelings and kept them inside. Instead of turning to others to talk about my feelings, I ate them. Food has always been my enemy and the food disorder grew. I would either starve myself to lose weight or binge and purge. I felt guilty about everything that went into my body. At my heaviest, I was around 400 pounds. I was frustrated, felt ugly, and desperate to get rid of the weight. I felt like nothing I did was helping. I kept putting on weight instead of losing it. I wanted a quick fix to losing weight. I turned to the latest diet trend, which would work for a while, but when time to reintroduce food, I would gain weight back. It was a spiral affect. I was starting to see patterns that I did not like. I finally said enough was enough. I am in charge of me and what happens, and I had to keep in the gym no matter what. I have lost somewhere in the area of 85+ pounds with the majority in recent months. Josh: Prior to losing weight, I lived the typical couch potato lifestyle. I ate a lot of fast food and rarely ever made lunch/dinner at home. The words “gym” or “workout” were not in my vocabulary. Around the middle of 2012 when I weighed in at about 350+ pounds, I realized that I needed to make a change to reach my ultimate goal of becoming a pilot. In January 2013, I made the decision to start working out with a trainer since I knew that I needed some help to get my weight loss started. At that point, I weighed roughly 325 pounds. Since then, I am down to 230, bringing me to a total of roughly 95 pounds. FOCUS: How has your lifestyle change affected you? What’s new about you? Melissa: My body is so much stronger now than it used to be. I can move with ease, and my core is stronger, so my back is more stable and does not hurt as much. I’m more flexible and able to do more things that I couldn’t do before. Exercise is a great way for me to burn off stress and helps with working off any other emotions. I am able to process things easier and work through things with a more positive attitude. My body runs better with the healthy food put in it on a constant basis. I am not hungry, so my body and mind works better. My mood is better when my stomach is full, and I just seem to be happy person with more energy. I have always been one to work out on my own, and now I have branched out and have workout buddies and friends. It’s fun to walk into the gym and know people and have someone excited I’m there. Josh: Nearly, if not every aspect of my life has changed in some manner. Physically, I am in the best shape of my life, but working out has also impacted my mental ability. Working out allows me to basically disconnect from real life and just focus on getting healthier. Since beginning my workouts, I have noticed that I have so much more energy than I did in the past, and I have noticed it having a positive benefit in basically every aspect of my life.

JANUARY 2014 thefocusmagazine.com
FOCUS: What workouts or nutritional changes did you incorporate to help stimulate weight loss? Melissa: I started working out heavier with a trainer one-on-one. My trainer does all-around body workouts, strength training, cardio, and will also do workouts that focus on certain muscle groups and core. I was also encouraged to go outside my comfort zone and join group training. I joined boot camp classes, Pilates, AWT, Ab attack, and cardio-based group classes. When I am not working out with my trainer or a group, I will come into the gym on my own and do cardio and weights, or go for a long bike ride and swim at home. As for nutrition, I went through a diet logic class with my trainer. I logged my food for a week and then was asked several questions about food. I found out I was not eating enough to support my body with all the exercise I was doing. A plan was put together with foods that I liked and it has worked wonders. I no longer felt hungry and my body felt better. I was not craving anything and was keeping my body fueled with small meals throughout the day. Josh: Every so often change can really help to kick start the changes. Nutritionally, I needed to remain focused on the end goal and ensure that I made smart choices. Luckily for me, I realized quite early in the process how important the workouts really are. Two sayings really helped to reinforce this fact for me: “Proper training starts in the kitchen” and “You cannot out-train poor nutrition.” FOCUS: Are there any people who helped get you where you are today? Melissa: I have had a few people who have helped me over this journey. They never seemed to give up on me and the encouragement given is fantastic. My trainer has been wonderful. She has kept things real for me and does not let me back down. She knows when things are off for me and talks through it. The meal plans have been easy. We have open communication and she helps me come up with plans to counter any problems I may face. Being proactive has been very helpful and great for mental, physical, and emotional success. I also know that this is a process and not an overnight thing. Josh: Although everyone in my life has been supportive, I think there are two major people who helped me reach where I am now. My wife has been my major supporter and kept me focused on the end goal no matter how rough or discouraged I have felt. My second supporter would have to be my trainer, Taylor Green, at Rob Z Fitness. Although I am no longer training there, he has become a friend and a great motivator. FOCUS: What has been the biggest challenge regarding your lifestyle change? How have you overcome that challenge? Melissa: Letting go of all the negative things said by others and the mind games in my own head to stop success. I have learned to change way of thinking. I have learned that some people are just negative people and will do what they can to trash your success. I have learned that there are people who care and want to see others succeed. I have just tried to be as positive as I can be and do my very best.
BEFORE
AFTER
Josh: The biggest challenge for me was motivation. While I was happy with my results at most points in my transformation, I went through a number of phases were I felt like nothing was happening, or I was going backwards. This was when the two motivational people mentioned above earned their titles. Both of these people were key to my success. FOCUS: How do you balance work, family, social life, etc. and still make time for working out? What is your key to time management success? Melissa: I have just made time to work out. I have put a workout early in the morning or later in the evening. I have invited family and friends to work out with me. I have enjoyed long walks and bike rides with others and just made things fun. Playing sports is a good way to incorporate others into workouts. I make time for those things that are most important in my life. There are days that it works and days that it does not. I don’t beat myself up anymore when I can’t fit all in. Josh: There is never going to be enough time in the day. Luckily, I realized that early in the whole process. Between school and work, I easily have plenty of stuff to do each day, but I knew that losing weight has to be a requirement. The key for me was realizing that losing weight would not just happen on its own. I knew that I needed to make time to work out no matter what else was going on in my life. FOCUS: What other tips can you give to someone who is looking to make a significant change in his/her life through fitness and nutrition? Melissa: Never give up and always be patient. Let the decision to get fit and change nutrition habits be yours and not what others want. I found that the moment that I made the decision to lose weight for me and not because someone else wanted me to or said I should, it worked better. Find someone who can walk this journey with you. Find the inner beast in you. You have an inner strength that is amazing and will kick in to help on days that you need it the most. Don’t listen to the negative stuff out there. Celebrate your accomplishments. Keep a “wow” moment journal. These are moments that are special to you and things you notice. Such as, “Wow, today I can do a full push up. Wow, today I ran longer or fast than I did yesterday. Wow ….I can fit into smaller shirt.” Celebrate you! Josh: Realizing that it was time for a change was my key. Along with that, it is important to have a support team in place. Without my support team, I probably would have fallen off the wagon a number of times. Motivation goes a long way, but having someone else chime in and provide some support can go a long way.

COX ELECTRIC BRANDON BUSINESS PROFILE
I
f you haven’t noticed, McDonald’s locations around the nation are undergoing large-scale remodels, transforming from traditional red-roofed establishments into more upscale restaurants with modern and industrial touches. Instead of hiring a large corporation for their sign installations, McDonald’s turned to one of the Tampa Bay area’s most trusted commercial and industrial vendors—COX Electric. “Right now we’re involved with roughly half of the McDonald’s remodels in the West Central Florida area,” said owner Larry Cox,
Profile by Amanda Deck
“including Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and Polk counties.” What makes COX Electric stand out is that they’re a multi-licensed company able to troubleshoot electrical issues, make lighting repairs and upgrades, and install and maintain building and road signs. The company is Florida State Certified as an Electrical Contractor, Electrical Sign Specialist, Lighting Contractor, and Building Contractor. In other words, COX Electric is a one-stop shop. “Whether signage, lighting, or electric, we take care of all those things,” said Cox.
Because of their Electricians’ versatile skills, COX Electric is currently installing the double drive-thru stations, featuring new menu boards and yellow awnings, at a countless number of area McDonald’s restaurants. In addition, they were also hired to relocate McKesson Corporation’s stateof-the-art conveyor system from its previous Tampa location to North Lakeland. COX Electric has also had a hand in providing service to multiple other commercial and industrial companies over its 28-year existence, including Tampa Bay Trane, the Federal Aviation Administration, and Lexus of Tampa Bay and Clearwater just to name a few. “With over 1 million square feet of shopping centers and office parks in three states, it is critical to have contractors with integrity that I can rely on for reliable and completive service,” said Colin Campbell, Jr. of Campbell Real Estate in Valrico. “Fortunately, over 20
years ago I met Larry Cox and ever since I have come to rely on COX Electric to handle our entire electrical repair, site lighting service and new construction.” COX Electric—a drug-free workplace— also works hard to provide their employees with better opportunities by offering free tuition for higher education through the Independent Electrical Contractors apprenticeship program. In the past few years, COX Electric has graduated nine Journeymen Electricians and five Master Electricians. Additionally, COX Electric is highly involved in the Brandon area community. In fact, the company has donated the tree used in the Center Place Christmas Tree Lighting celebration for the past 15 years. Pam Moore, previous manager of the Rotary Club’s Camp Florida in Brandon had kind words about COX Electric’s outstanding service: “We thank [COX Electric] for their generous support of Rotary’s Camp Florida. They have helped in so many ways, wiring all the cabins to facilitate wheelchair recharging followed up by a donation for half the amount of the bill.” COX Electric’s commitment to their employees as well as the surrounding community won them a Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award in 2012. “It was nice to be recognized by our peers for our business practices, how we treat our customers and our employees,” said Cox. “It was a great honor.” Since 1986, COX Electric has provided unparalleled service to hundreds of businesses across West Central Florida— from Brandon Mitsubishi/Hyundai and Costco Wholesale to AAA Cooper and Travel Centers of America. If you’re in need of expert electrical, lighting, or sign services, contact them today.

MOLLIE DRENTH M Article by Deana Garrison
ollie Drenth finished her senior year at Riverview High School early in December to experience what many can only dream about. Mollie was chosen by the University of Iowa for a full scholarship. We wish her all the success in her new adventure. She has represented Golden City Gymnastics well and they are obviously very proud of her accomplishments. University of Iowa has certainly gained a hard worker and dedicated young lady.
Mollie showed what a great choice she would be when she achieved Level 10 State Champion. Achieving this incredible goal is tough. In order to even qualify for State Championship you have to get there through a qualifying meet. Which means you have to be flawless. One participant Mollie was competing with was known to be at the top. With tough competition to beat, Mollie shined through with her combination score of vault, bars, beam, and floor routine. She gave it her all and her years of hard work paid off. This huge accomplishment has surely proven she has what it takes. In November, Mollie’s signing was held at Golden City Gymnastics and was an exciting event for her family and gymnastic family as well. After working with Mollie for all these years, Ramos has seen her grow and develop into a top notch gymnast. “She is a really hard worker. She has worked hard at everything that has come her way,” recalls Ramos. After all, the skills just don’t come overnight. Her many years of practice and dedication has contributed to her huge accomplishments. She is definitely not one to quit or give up. When a difficult routine or skill comes her way, she works hard at it to pull through and tackle her task. While many High School Seniors are still hitting the books in their High School year, Mollie was ready to leave shortly after Christmas on her new journey. KEITH’S OAKS
BAR AND GRILL Profile by Amanda Deck
T
he Oaks Bar and Grill, the casual, downhome Florida-inspired restaurant located on the corner of Lithia Pinecrest Road and Brandon Boulevard (SR 60), has been known for its excellent food, relaxed atmosphere, and friendly service since its inception. And new owner Keith Askew is dedicated to continuing The Oaks’ reputation as one of Brandon’s favorite family-friendly dining establishments after purchasing it just two months ago from longtime owners Josh and Terri Hartford. Now known as Keith’s Oaks Bar and Grill, the restaurant is still serving its top-notch signature seafood selections—including the highly popular Grouper Sandwich featuring lettuce, tomato, onion, and fish straight from the Gulf of Mexico. “The grouper sandwich is so big and so good,” said one recently satisfied customer. “I recommend getting the coleslaw on the side and dumping it on your sandwich...And if you
are extra hungry, be sure to try the homemade crab cakes!” Other seafood menu choices include the unique Fishspread (a mild, smoky dip served with crackers), BBQ Bacon Wrapped Shrimp; and Beer Battered Shrimp—among other must-try items like Alaskan Snow Crab and steamed Lobster Tails. And if you can’t pick just one favorite, be sure to order the Seafood Combo which offers a large sampling of homemade crab cakes, Atlantic Whitefish fingers, clam strips, and shrimp.
Owner Keith Askew says the success of his newly- acquired restaurant wouldn’t be possible without the help of his business partners: McKenzie Gerun, and Donna and Rick Vickers. Photo courtesy of Donna Vickers
But Keith’s Oaks Bar and Grill doesn’t just serve up seafood. In fact, it is known for much more. “We have a lil’ somethin’ for everyone,” said Keith. That includes hand-cut rib eye steaks (Keith’s favorite), juicy half-pound specialty burgers, southern-style BBQ pulled pork sandwiches,

tasty wings in a variety of flavors, fresh salads, and filling pasta dishes (try Stenger’s Cajun Chicken Pasta) just to name a few...and we can’t forget to mention their fall-off-thebone St. Louis-style ribs—all you can eat on Tuesday nights!
Keith. “I want this place to be a late-night music emporium for people of all ages.”
“Our ribs are some of the best you can get,” said Keith. “Our food keeps people coming back for more because everything is fresh and made to order.”
Keith, along with his business partners McKenzie Gerun and Rick and Donna Vickers—all lifelong Brandon residents—are excited to serve the local community at the restaurant. In fact, Keith owes much of his success to his dedicated team.
Apart from All You Can Eat Ribs, other weekly specials include All You Can Eat Fish Fry on Sundays and 2 for $15 entrees on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. “I came with my family to eat here and all I can say is wow,” said a Brandon area local. “The food was great and they give you large portions for a really great price.” Although Keith has inherited an unbeatable menu and a beautiful location—featuring outdoor patio seating and a full liquor bar, he’s really looking to make his restaurant a true Brandon hotspot for entertainment. Customers are already enjoying the Saturday karaoke nights.
