SHARDS OF GLASS A PERSONAL MEMOIR ON CHILDHOOD ABUSE Article by Cheryl Johnston

C

hris Washburn is a brave woman! And she takes hope in the words of author, Kahlil Gibran: “Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.” The oldest of four children, Washburn was raised in upstate New York and wrote under the pen name CW Seymore to protect her family. She has written and published her personal memoir, Shards of Glass: A Little Girl’s Journey Back into Her World of Physical, Mental and Sexual Abuse. The

book details the pain, emotional torment, confusion and rage she experienced at the hands of an abusive father for more than 15 years of her childhood. As a child, her constant prayer was, “Please, Lord, don’t let him find me.” “That was my earnest prayer, “ Chris explained,“ my cry in desperation for help, deliverance and rescue from the brutality of my father, which never came in the countless, cruel and horrifying actions he inflicted.” She added, “Through tears and in pain,

Following the recent publication of her Shards of Glass memoir, Chris Washburn is currently writing its sequel, Shattered by Glass.

experiencing shock or fearing for my life, I uttered this prayer as I rocked back and forth, hiding in one of my many ‘safe places’ outside in the forest or cornfield, under my bed, in a closet and behind the couch where I was terrified, alone, helpless and so very afraid.” Washburn describes her journey into wholeness as “tremendously difficult,” calling herself, “still a work in progress.”

6

Washburn acknowledges several locals for their listening ears, encouragement, faith, truth, and wisdom—Ponce, Stephen Rossiter and Christina DoVale, as compassionate and supportive friends throughout the process. “This book is healing for me, ending the silence and moving one step closer to the higher calling the Lord has planned for my life,” Washburn added. “My greatest hope is that these vivid snapshots will help other survivors of abuse, verbal degradation and sexual molestation to find hope, healing and comfort in knowing they are not alone!”

“In the span of three weeks and many tears, I wrote Shards of Glass after the Lord’s gentle leading through the tender advice and counsel of my friend, Marivel Ponce. When Now, through her faith in God and with she asked if I’d ever been raped, I realized it the encouragement of others, she is ready was time the truth be brought into the light.” to write the next book, Shattered by Glass. The continuing story will reveal how she has Ponce shared, “She came over one night, experienced the power of forgiveness, the and we started talking about her situation hope of healing, and the courage renewed in and the horror stories of her childhood. I spiritual growth. simply said, ‘You really should write a book.’ I told her, ‘I’ve never heard of a story like To purchase Shards of Glass and read the yours. ELIGIBLE FARM CREDIT OF CENTRAL FLORIDA MEMBERS

SHARE IN $3.5 MILLION PATRONAGE REFUND Article by Cheryl Johnston

Farm Credit of Central Florida Directors, Ron Wetherington (L), and Dennis Carlton, Sr. (R) hold an oversized check symbolizing the $145 million in patronage refunds, or profit-sharing, the cooperative’s board of directors has declared since 1988. Sharing in the association’s profits can significantly reduce the cost of funds to its Member/ Borrowers.

F

arm Credit of Central Florida Chairman of the Board, David J. Stanford, a Winter Garden citrus grower, announced at the annual stockholders meeting on April 16 that the association’s eligible Member/Borrowers will benefit from patronage refunds, or profit-sharing, of $3.5 million, significantly lowering their cost of borrowing. Farm Credit of Central Florida is a Member-Owned cooperative lending funds to ranchers, growers, farmers, and rural homeowners since 1917. Eligible Members will receive their patronage refund 100% in cash. Currently, approximately 1,400 active loans are in force to approximately 700 of the total Central Florida membership. “The patronage refund is a reward to our Members for their loyalty and is proof of our adherence to cooperative principles. The patronage refund is a critical component of the Farm Credit Advantage,” Stanford said. “This strong patronage refund continues the tradition of ‘Putting our Profits in our Members’ Pockets.’ I am pleased to report 100% of this patronage refund will be paid in cash and represents a return of over 16% of earned interest. The resilience and perseverance of our Farm Credit Members through one of the most devastating depressions since the 1930s has helped our association to grow and prosper,” said Reggie

Holt, President/CEO of Farm Credit of Central Florida. Since 1988, the organization’s board of directors has declared patronage refunds exceeding $145 million. The coop’s service area spans from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic coast serving 13 central Florida counties including, Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Sumter, Pinellas, Polk, Hillsborough, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Volusia, and Brevard. For perspective, the $145 million would pay the entire Tampa Bay Rays team payroll for 2 ½ seasons, buy 2,400 John Deere Model 613D tractors, or 15 Lear Jets! Stretched end-to-end, 145 million dollars would stretch from Lakeland, Florida to Los Angeles, California almost 6 times, or halfway around the globe at the equator! Ron O’Connor, Director of Marketing and Governmental Affairs for Farm Credit of Central Florida, added, “Our members are very pleased because this allows them a lower effective rate of borrowing. Anytime we’re successful, it’s because of the perseverance and resilience of the farmers. We are a single industry lender, so when agriculture does well, we do well. The farmers, ranchers, and growers elected by fellow member/borrowers to serve on the Board of Directors are in tune with the industry and what it takes to be successful. We’re thankful to share this great news.” FOCUS MAGAZINE BRANDON JUNE 2014

Loan Officer with FBC Mortgage, LLC Community activist Liz Brewer works as Branch Manager/ Loan Officer at FBC Mortgage, LLC in Valrico. Her campaign’s designated charities are Women’s Resource Center, Brandon Foundation, and the Hillsborough County Firefighter’s Foundation. She desires to raise awareness of the area’s charitable causes and encourages every citizen to get involved through time, talents, and donations. Focus: Hi, Liz! Tell us about your family and roots? Brewer: My parents, siblings and I moved here from Connecticut in 1976. I worked for Brocato’s Sandwich Shop until my King High School graduation (1982), so they will always be family. Jeff and I have been happily married 28 years. We opened Patriot Arms & Outfitting (1997) because this was my passionate outdoorsman/husband’s dream job. We adore our three children: Jeff, 24, a Hillsborough County Firefighter and recent graduate of HCC’s Paramedic program; Tyler, 19, a Santa Fe College sophomore and eventual UF Gator; and Brittany “Alyson’’,14, a soonto-be Newsome High School freshman. We worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with some pretty incredible people at the Crossing Church, where I sing on the Praise Team. Focus: How did you become involved in your career and community? Brewer: Over the past 28 years in the mortgage industry, I have advanced from receptionist to Loan Processor/Officer/ Manager to firm owner until the 2008 mortgage collapse. Since 2012 I’ve worked with FBC Mortgage.

Focus: Describe your involvement with The Community Roundtable and honorary mayor event? Brewer: Janine Nickerson, high school friend GayLynn Love and other board members encouraged me. I was a busy wife, mother of three and career woman, but also someone who believes in supporting charities. My heart told me to get involved. I’m still amazed at how a small group of volunteers manages to pull off such big events. We are recruiting to connect students who need volunteer hours with non-profits who need volunteers and we assist local charities through a community calendar and support to grow their efforts. We’d like to double membership of non-profits, businesses and individuals to achieve even more in the future. By investing a few hours, people can continue the traditions of Florida’s largest 4th of July Parade, and our Community Affairs Dinner (recognizing Non-Profit of the Year, High School Senior Scholarship, and Volunteer of the Year). As Chair of the 2015 Dinner, I look forward to organizing a community-wide event for celebrating all the good that happens in Brandon. I served on the race committees for George May, Connie Smaldone, Rob Silver, GayLynn Love and Jack Bartlett. After much prayer and consulting family and close friends, I felt the time for my mayoral run was now. Focus: What do you enjoy most about your career, your charity work, and Brandon in general? Brewer: God has called us each to serve, which I can do through worthy cause fundraising and event planning. As a Mortgage Loan Officer, I meet clients at their happiest, when they’re purchasing a home. I love the satisfaction in helping them realize their dreams or helping them restructure debt, using their home as a financial tool. The small town feel connects us one to another. I love raising our children in the country’s finest schools, serving on PTSAs and making an impact in their educational lives. We attend a thriving church and have many dear friends. Incredible community charities do amazing work for our residents. I would not want to live anywhere else in the world! Focus: In 5 years you see yourself doing what? Brewer: I hope to be the cord that brings our community together to care for the homeless, hungry and needy and support our wonderful charities. I’d like to be known as the ‘’hometown mortgage lender’’ and see my husband’s business continue to thrive. I hope to watch my beautiful daughter cheer in college on scholarship and see my two sons marry and maybe even give us a grandchild or two. Focus: Let’s thank your team! Brewer: I am humbled by my race team’s support: Anne Nymark, Jodi Chadwell, Donna Rayburn, Sammy Devine, GayLynn and Chloe Love and many others who are “in it to win it.” Without the everyday involvement of my husband and children, I couldn’t do this. Everyone can help raise awareness—one dollar at a time—by attending the great events we’ve planned! Visit www.BrewerforBrandonMayor.com and www.facebook.com/BrewerforMayor?ref=profile.

2014 Brandon Honorary Mayor Candidate

Judy Moore is founder and CEO of Jute’s Box, her own homebased bakery of specialty cakes and other goodies. She also works as CEO/CFO of their business, Bill Moore & Co., Inc. The current President of the Board of Directors for Center Place is also a member of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce and Charity Chicks. Her designated charity for this campaign is Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association. Focus: Hello, Judy! Share a little about your family and your roots. Moore: I moved to Florida in 1981 from Lyon Mountain, a small town in the Adirondacks in upstate NY, where most of my family still resides (Brrrr). I have one son, Jason, 28, and one granddaughter, Emma Grace, 4. I’ve been married to my amazing husband, Bill, since 1999. Focus: How did you become involved in your career and community? Moore: After graduation from high school, I moved south. I managed a restaurant, but after being held up TWICE at gunpoint, decided to change careers. In 1987, I started working at Bill Moore and Company, Inc., with little knowledge of plants, so I attended HCC to broaden my knowledge of live plants. Since several customers are our Spanish friends, I had to make the grand attempt to learn another language. I attended HCC, the Berlitz Language School in Tampa and an exchange student program in Mexico (It’s not like riding a bike, that’s for sure.) Focus: With what organizations or groups have you been involved? Moore: I joined the Chamber of Commerce in 1994 and have been involved with Center Place for 4 years since starting as a volunteer with Barbara Schwabe’s mayoral race. I also worked previously on campaigns for Arlene Waldron and last year for Dawn Galia. I’ve been a Charity Chick for 4 years and am a member of the Greater Brandon Arts Council. Focus: How did you become involved with The Community Roundtable and specifically with the honorary mayor event? Moore: Through my involvement with Center Place over the years, I have seen how important it is that we have a candidate in the race each year. It’s amazing how many people in our community are so generous with their money and time.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

Focus: Describe what you enjoy most about your career and your work for Center Place. Moore: My career has given me the opportunity to travel the world, meet some wonderful people and learn the customs of other countries, all while beautifying our own country from coast to coast. Center Place has exposed me to a vast amount of gracious people who enjoy helping the less fortunate while enjoying the time spent together. MOVIE NIGHT AT AMC THEATER Tuesday, June 3 at AMC Theater Brandon $20; doors open at 6PM for pre-movie social with Chick-fil-A dinner, followed by Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Faning PREMIER JEWELRY PARTY Tuesday, June 10, 6PM at Center Place Shop for gifts for yourself and others

Focus: What unique aspects of living and working in the Brandon community do you enjoy? Moore: Brandon has a certain amount of closeness in its community with an outstanding outreach to both youth and adults. Often big cities lose focus on the importance of family values and it seems like Brandon perpetuates these beliefs. Focus: Would you encourage others to become involved with Center Place? Moore: Absolutely! Center Place is MY happy place. I usher for the children’s shows and seeing the look on their faces as they leave a theater production is priceless. Many children thank US for letting them come and we thank them for coming. Center Place offers a wide variety of classes for adults and children. Focus: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? Moore: I can see myself still baking cakes and volunteering in the community. I have an excellent staff at Bill Moore and Company, Inc. and am confident they can take over with less help from me. I will continue to support the arts and theater and will always campaign for the children. From my volunteer work, I’ve noticed they often need that little vote of confidence. I will be that person giving that vote and will offer new ideas to introduce to our active community.” Focus: Would you like to thank the many folks helping in your mayoral race? Moore: Yes, because I could not make this a successful race without my committee. I am fortunate enough to have a very active group of ladies and gentlemen to help in my endeavors. I would also like to give a very special “thank you” to my husband Bill, for putting up with the craziness of my journey. Dr. Lyda Lopez, who has been at our Brandon location for over 15 years, “made it so simple to fit in.” “It’s important to feel this way,” Dr. Torres added, because this practice has been here more than 35 years and it’s always a concern as to whether existing patients will be comfortable with the new doctor. According to Kerry Torres, “The transition has been going very smoothly.” The team at Pediatric Dentistry of Brandon understands both the child’s needs and the parent’s concerns. For the last 17 years, Miss Jeanne, Dental Health Educator for the practice, has traveled Miss Jeanne, our dental Hillsborough County teaching children of all ages health educator about the importance of good oral hygiene. Each year she visits more than 300 preschools, elementary schools, parks, recreation centers and home day care operations to spread the good news about proper flossing and brushing techniques. Dr. Torres explains, “If we can educate the parents and their children about the importance of good oral hygiene most of the dental problems will be prevented. Starting at age 1, children should continue seeing their pediatric dentist every 6 months. This is why Jeanne plays such an important role in the Brandon community and we love what she does.” Jeanne has developed several different presentations designed to cater to various age groups, from two years of age to preteens. Each program is designed to educate, motivate and entertain.

SPORTS » ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

ERIN SCHULTE Article by Deana Garrison

A

true hard working athlete that never gives up and always puts forth a positive attitude describes our Athlete of the month, Erin Schulte. Schulte began swimming on the Walden Lake Swim Team when she was just five years old. When she was eight years old, she joined the Blue Wave team in Brandon and has improved her skills throughout the years.

At 14, Schulte has shown impressive improvement and accomplishments. She has made “qualifying times” to compete at the Florida Age Group Championship and the Senior Sectional meet. She also has been chosen to be part of the Florida Swimming All Star team. To be recognized as “All Star” quality really says a lot.

Swimming can be a very demanding sport. She swims two hours every day. That can sometimes get in the way of social events. It may seem like a lot to put in those two hours every day after a long school day and have time to study, but Schulte never lets that get to her. She finds a way to put in her time. Her dedication to the sport is top priority. Another great aspect about Schulte’s determination and dedication is the simple fact that she doesn’t let this sport get in her way of academics. Academics play a major

role in her life. Holding Principal’s Honor Roll status, a member of NJHS, in the STEM program, and on the yearbook staff says a lot about her. Academics play a major role in a well-rounded athlete. To be able to balance the two well speaks volumes about that person. Schulte is a fine example of that. It is very impressive to continue to achieve straight A’s on her report card while holding this year round sport. With her favorite race being the 200 breaststroke, Schulte makes it all look so easy. It may not be as easy as she makes it look. Schulte battles with asthma. Where some teens would use it as an excuse to stop with the sport, it gives Schulte more of a reason not to quit. She never gives up. She keeps practicing and deals with the asthma when she needs to. She never has the fear of any swim meet. If she ever has to stop, that is okay, she’ll just kick it in the next meet. Although it is very hard on her to have to deal with something that is totally out of her control, she doesn’t complain. She finds a way to work through it and moves on. That determination and drive is what makes her character. She is definitely an inspiration to those around her. Keep your eye out for this Athlete. She has many more years ahead of her to show even greater accomplishments. Congratulations Erin Schulte for being the Brandon Focus Magazine’s Athlete of the Month.
