It is not easy putting the life of a loved one in the hands of another person. When the well-being of a person you care about is in the control of somebody else, sometimes you feel powerless. You want to make sure you are doing everything you can to help that person because there is an inherent desire in many of us to be able to control a situation. When I was an adolescent, my father was experiencing chest pains. My mother took him to an emergency walk-in medical center, where the doctors said he needed to go to a hospital. They thought he was having a heart attack, and they ordered the paramedics to rush him to the emergency room. I remember sitting in the waiting room of the ER – I was nervous, paranoid, a million other states of emotional distress – and it was one of the worst moments in my life. I remember thinking how horrible it was that I couldn’t do anything about my father’s health condition. What could I do? Operate on him? No, I didn’t go to med school. Tell him I love him? What good would that do? But everything turned out OK. The doctors figured out that he was having an anxiety attack from stress at work – many of us can relate to that. The hospital took good care of my father, and he was back home in a short period of time. Sometimes it is best to relinquish control of something and let others take the reigns, especially when it is a medical situation. So where do you turn when an instance like the one mentioned above happens? In this issue of FOCUS, there is a medical guide that can help anyone looking for a good doctor. Background information and pertinent information for each doctor is listed to help in making an informed decision. Also in this issue is a Spotlight interview with Dr. Scott Goldsmith, an orthopedic surgeon at South Florida Baptist Hospital. He shares what brought him to Plant City and some of the new things the hospital has to offer. I hope you find something that can benefit you.

On March 23, Charles Harris was fortunate enough to play in Arnold Palmer’s Pro Am Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando. He was offered the spot on the team from friends at Tiffany & Co. that produce the silver trophy for the tournament. The team was paired up with Lee Janzen as its pro. Lee is a two-time U.S. Open Champion that has local ties to the area. Lee played golf for Florida Southern College in Lakeland and helped them win two Division II National Titles in 1985 and 1986. Despite the windy and wet weather, the team scored a -7 for the round and had a great time playing with such a great player and nice guy.
On April 11, ABC’s “Good Morning America” aired a profile about the 2009 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen and her court. Queen Lauren Der, First Maid Sara Beth Newsome, and court members Megan Cochran, Joclyn Emerson, and Morgan Feaster were featured in the weekend segment “American Snapshots.” The piece included previously shot footage, including the girls going about their everyday lives leading up to the festival, behind the scenes shots of the queen and her court at the 74th annual event, as well as images capturing some of the beauty of Plant City during the winter strawberry season.

THREE FOR ONE Three charities will benefit from money raised at a golf tournament. S t o ry by K r y s t e l K n o w l e s
Brooke McDonald, the daughter of Mitch McDonald, died in October 2008. Less than two months later, Nick Dandridge, son of Jim Dandridge, also died. The combined ages of the two is less than 40 years. The two fathers founded Tribute to Life less than a year ago in memory of their children who lost their lives due to tragic circumstances. The foundation’s purpose is to give people the opportunity to support
and prevent tragic circumstances by helping other foundations. “If we can manage to save at least one life, then it’s worth it, “ said Dandridge. To achieve their goal, McDonald and Dandridge decided to start a golf tournament fundraiser, which worked out well since they both enjoy the sport and have a lot of friends who also play golf. The tournament allowed people to form four-person

scramble teams at Walden Lake Golf and Country Club. “This is a nice sport that everyone can enjoy – the weather and being outdoors,” said Dandridge. They said it took a lot of time and work to be able to plan the event but enjoyed every minute of the process because they know it was for a good cause. “We knew we could do this because we have the support of our children who are with God,” said Dandridge. The golf tournament, which took place April 4, attracted more than 55 teams for a grand total of more than 250 players. The tournament consist-
ed of a special guest, Chicago Bears tight end Desmond Clark, along with giveaways, a silent auction, and lunch. “We were very excited Desmond was going to be our special guest. Next year we might have Tony Dungy,” said McDonald. This year they are trying to raise at least $30,000 and next year they hope to raise more money because they will have more time to plan the tournament. The money raised so far will benefit several foundations. Highland Park Youth Camp Foundation is a youth camp that provides youths with chances to learn about serving others, finding god, and finding purpose in life. The Teen Challenge is a 15-month boarding school for young teens that enables them to restore a bond between their families and god. And 88Wayz Foundation was founded by Clark because he wanted to help teens through mentoring programs to help them become productive citizens. The three organizations will all benefit from Tribute to Life. “All these foundations are designed to keep teens on the right track. People are participating for a good cause,” said Dandridge. “We never want a parent to go through what we went through.” John Carpenter moved from Ft Lauderdale to Plant City one year ago. He said he decided to participate in the golf tournament because he was touched by the cause. “Plant City is a unique and tight community. I am amazed so many people showed up in such short notice,” said Carpenter. He said he is surprised and proud the event was such a success. “I am planning on participating every year.” Mike McDonald and Marc McDonald are proud of their younger brother because of his dedication to finding a way to help others. “This is a great way to keep Brooke’s name alive. Not only was Brooke his daughter, but they were best friends,” said Mike.

Choosing a single winner for Durant High’s 2009 Durant Idol Competition proved to be a difficult feat for many as voters struggled to cast their ballots in the wake of an onslaught of brilliant talent. But one singer, Freshman Bianca Swilley, came out on top and was awarded the title of Durant Idol 2009. The last of seven contestants to strut their stuff onstage and raise their voice in hopes of being voted No. 1, Bianca belted out a fabulous rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” creating one heck of a grand finale as she sent the crowd into a roaring frenzy. Comical emcees Christopher Tousignant and Amanda Zappia returned to the stage a short while later to announce the winner, and as all seven contestants stood together, holding hands and embracing one another, it was apparent that any bitter rivalry that would be expected of a high school competition didn’t make the curtain call. Judges James Lindroth, Colonel Richard Sheffield, and Dan Dubay had nothing but positive feedback for the contestants, who included students from all four grade levels but with the same degree of astounding vocal talent. The temperature in the audience rose a few degrees as Gabe McIver started the show with a smooth and sultry version of “Fever,” which was received with high acclaim and a good amount of wolf-whistling from spectators as Dubay declared, “As of right now, you’re my winner.” The heat morphed into raw feminine power as Linda Swaby took the stage in a sparkling ivory bubble dress and beautifully sang what was deemed one of the most difficult songs of the night, Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time.” The third contestant to grace the stage was Mackenzie Jenkins, who demonstrated perfect pitch and a blossoming stage presence as he stood from his prop chair and
wrapped up “Just Once” with a powerful ending note and a great connection with the audience. TyLynn Eben followed with a spirited and fun interpretation of Taylor Swift’s hit song “Love Story,” perfectly engaging the crowd with her rhythm and at one point dropping to her knees to croon out the well-known lyrics, “Marry me, Juliet.” Ciara Morales, whose talent is widely recognized around Durant, was the fifth singer in the competition and provided another take on the classic song “One Moment in Time” as she displayed unbelievable voice control and a relaxed visage under the spotlight. Wearing a flirty bright yellow dress and heels to match, the multitalented Vanessa Harps came next with a mostly hot version of “Hot N’ Cold,” prancing across the stage to deliver a song about Katie Perry’s frustrations with a noncommittal boyfriend. Winner Bianca Swilley wrapped up the show with one of Kelly Clarkson’s most popular tunes, flaunting an amazing voice with faultless pitch and powerful range, prompting Judge Colonel Sheffield to say the singer had “…almost a science and art to handling the microphone…you pulled in and took it away.” Swilley indeed stole the show in the end, though picking just one winner was a decision that presented a dilemma for various audience members. One voter, sophomore Amy Battin, who was a contestant in the first round of Durant Idol, commented during the voting process, saying, “I’ve got it narrowed down to three, but they were all so good.” All seven contestants looked marvelous and performed wonderfully, and it’s not hard to imagine that all could go on to grasp a career in the vocal world. And now, with Durant Idol under their belts, who’s to say American Idol isn’t next?

JEFFCOAT HONORED Hundreds showed at the Red Rose in appreciation of photographer Gladys Jeffcoat. S t o ry by T r a c y C ox
For nearly 50 years, she captured the heritage and history of Plant City as she snapped pictures of football touchdowns, baby parades, fish stringers laden with a prized catch, blushing brides, World War II soldiers ready to ship out, community happenings, and city events. If it was important to the citizens of Plant City, she was there to make it a permanent memory to view for years to come. On March 26, Plant City Photo Archives honored Gladys Jeffcoat for her life’s work with the presentation of the Heritage Award at its seventh annual gala at the Red Rose Ballroom. As she accepted her crystal award, she looked out among the guests to the many faces she had photographed as babies and said, “I would like to thank the man upstairs for allowing my Mama and Daddy to give birth to me in Plant City. This Heritage Award is dedicated to the people of Plant City and my family. I couldn’t do it without both of them.”
The Heritage Award, presented to her by last year’s recipient Dr. Hal Brewer, honors an outstanding citizen who is beloved in the community for his or her contributions and for a long-standing successful impact on Plant City. Celebrated for not only her photography, Gladys was also recognized for her tireless support as a founding member of the East Hillsborough Historical Society and as a board member of the Arts Council of Plant City. Through her dedication to her hometown, she was instrumental in the efforts to preserve the 1914 Plant City High School, the 1908 Union Railroad Station, and the 1923 Plant City Cornerstone Center, formerly the First Baptist Church. Riding her bike after school to hang out at The Hollywood Studio, a local portrait business, 16-yearold Gladys convinced the owner to hire her in 1941. Earning $1 weekly, she took her first picture with her father’s 50-cent box camera. While

at the studio, she learned the photography business from the ground up, from darkroom work to lighting and timing. A determined young woman for the times, she persuaded Ray Kramer, owner of Kramer Photo Service, to sell his studio to her on a monthly installment plan when she was 19 years old. She was accepted into the Florida Photo Association and became an Eastman Kodak dealer, making Gladys Jeffcoat’s Arcade Studio, the city’s first camera shop. Reminiscing, Gladys eyed the former Dyuck twins, Linda and Carolyn, who had traveled from out of town to attend the gala, and recalled fondly when their mother brought them to her studio in 1943. “Those twins wouldn’t do right for their mother, so she just got on the phone and called Coach. Let me tell you, when Coach Daddy got there, they were ready to get their pictures taken,” Gladys said. Brewer, witty as always, recalled her nickname, “Two Shots Jeffcoat,” which she earned because the city law enforcement, when investigating automobile accidents, would call Gladys before the wrecker. He also chided her about being a ‘brazen
woman’ who dared to wear slacks, running down the sidelines to catch the Friday night action at the Plant City Planters’ football games during the 1940s and ’50s. “Gladys was everywhere; she took pictures of everything,” said Brewer recognizing her for her role as the official photographer for the Plant City Courier, the Florida Strawberry Festival, and Plant City’s schools. President Ed Verner paid tribute to Gladys for her 2008 donation of her more than 45,000 photos taken until her retirement in 1990. The contribution doubled Plant City Photo Archives’ collection. She is currently working with the archive to catalog the photos by identifying when and where each photo was taken and of whom. “What has always impressed me about Plant City is the people are special. We help each other, that is why I preserved your precious smiles,” said Gladys to her long-time friends and family, including her son, Harry, also a Plant City photographer, and her daughter, Becky, her husband, Bruce Mitchell, and their son, Ryan, all of Tallahassee.

Rain or shine, it is community luau time. Slip on some flip-flops, put on a tropical shirt and shorts, call a bunch of friends, and make plans to attend the Plant City Family YMCA’s Second Annual Hawaiian Luau on Saturday, April 25, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Guests benefit in more ways than simply a social event. Brett Mueller, director of the luau fundraiser, said, “Patrons give hundreds of children and families the benefits of the YMCA experience. Building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities is the priority mission for the YMCA.”
The cost for the evening is $35 per person, which includes food from area restaurants, tropical drinks, and live entertainment by vocalist Casey Stidham. Tube and kayak races also will entertain by poolside. This event allows the YMCA staff to say thanks to community supporters and donors. It also generates funds to support the “We Build Strong Kids” program, among others. Last year, more than 200 children received scholarships from the $11,759 raised through the membership’s generosity, sponsorship, and attendance. Plant City Family YMCA
Executive Director Scott Warren knows full well the value this nonprofit organization provides. He said his three children “grew up in the Y” and fondly remember summer camp. Warren credits this fundraiser for “providing scholarships for children whose families cannot afford to pay summer camp fees.” Warren appreciates the culture represented by the YMCA customer base, saying, “One of the best things about the Y is the fact that our membership has always been a melting pot – one of the few places in the U.S. where all are equal despite skin color, intelligence level, or economic status.” Sponsors for the 2009 luau are Sweetbay Supermarket, Applebee’s, Moe’s, Outback Steakhouse, Zaxby’s, Chili’s, Grandpa Johnson’s Barbeque, Grey Goose, National Wine, Premier Wine, Pepsi, Pepin Distributing, Mango Family
Cleaners, and Sentry Benefit Auctioneers. Both a silent auction and live auction are planned. Prizes await the highest bidders, including a beach weekend getaway and theme park admissions. Generosity is appreciated since all proceeds benefit the children and families served by the Plant City Family YMCA. Children benefit not only from the funds raised through this event. Warren said the YMCA mission is to “teach values, touch lives, and give children and families a place to belong.” The five foundational values emphasized through instruction at the Y develop successful citizens. These include caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith. Families can see the values modeled by employees and members, and they get fit in the process. continued on next page>

WHO DESERVES A MAKEOVER? The time is now to nominate someone for the “Focus on You” Makeover. Many people know someone who is selfless, someone who always seems to be helping others. Now think for a second about someone you know like that. Who was the first person that came to your mind? Sometimes those people need a break, and they need a day where they aren’t concerned about helping those in their lives. It is not a selfish thing, just something well-deserved. Well, fortunately, FOCUS is offering a day like that for four lucky people. It is the magazine’s annual “Focus on you Makeover,” which rewards people with a day of pampering. So if you know anyone who deserves a makeover, FOCUS is here to make it happen with the help of other businesses in the community. To nominate someone, send a 300word letter describing why he or she deserves a makeover. It can be submitted via mail, e-mail, or fax. All nominations must be received by midnight May 16. Four winners will be chosen and notified on May 19. Letters should be titled “Focus on you Makeover” and mailed to 101 E. J. Arden Mays Blvd., Plant City, FL 33563. Entries can also be e-mailed to editorial@Floydpublications.com. Write “Focus on you Makeover” in
the subject line and send the entry in the body of the e-mail – please, no attachments. Entries should include the name of the nominee and the nominator, along with the nominee’s address, home phone number, and work phone number. For faxing, call (813) 7640990, Attn: Aaron. Letters and entries will be published in FOCUS Magazine and photographs will be taken during the makeover day and published in the following month’s edition. So what’s in store for the four lucky winners? The day begins with breakfast, and afterwards the winners will get to pick out a new outfit. Then comes a massage, which is followed by a lunch with the staff of FOCUS. During lunch, we will have a surprise for each winner. After lunch, the women will get their makeup done following a facial, manicure, pedicure, and haircut. To top the evening off, a limo will transport the winners and their dates to get pictures taken and enjoy an evening of fine dining and top-notch entertainment, which are provided by the Red Rose Inn and Suites. It is sure to be a day that will not be forgotten.

TRAIN EVENT APPEALS TO ALL AGES The H. B. Plant Railroad Historical Society played host to its annual train show at the Trinkle Center. S t o ry by T r a c y C ox
Slowly walking down the aisle, 5-year-old Casey Merritt carefully studied the many selections of model train cars available at the H. B. Railroad Historical Society Train Show, held at the Trinkle Center, on March 21. Money in hand, he had to find just the right one to invest in for his train set at home. Vendors were eager to help, they understand how serious train aficionados take their beloved hobby, his two grandmothers know too. “I was looking for these cars everywhere,” Merritt said, choosing an auto carrier with three small cars sitting on top of it from vendor, Peter Carbone of PRC Trains. Peering down at him proudly, Casey’s grandmother, Gwen Merritt said, “He has loved trains all his life. He definitely has the right name for it,” referring to railroad legendary engineer, Casey Jones. Not to be left out, his great-grandmother, Mary Tidwell, said, “He has
a Thomas the Train set sitting up on my dining room table. We don’t ever take it down.” Casey was just one of the hundreds of model train devotees at the show to buy pieces for their train sets and to admire the models set up by Plant City’s H. B. Plant Railroad Historical Society. Not only did the youngsters come, but the young at heart as well, as 88-year-old Fred Schultze of Darby, Fla., eased down the aisles with his walker. “I just sold my trains and 1,600 feet of railroad track. My train cars were six-foot models that you could ride in,” said Schultze. “I still like to look.” The society, a nonprofit organization, was formed in 1985 with the mission to

further the hobby of model railroading and to preserve the history of American railroading and railroads within Plant City and surrounding communities. Along with the East Hillsborough Historical Society and citizens of Plant City, the members have contributed to the restoration and help maintain the 1908 Union Station with its museum complete with replicas of an early ticket and
telegraph office, representative of the 1900-1950 era, and observation deck from the Orange Blossom Special train that once stopped at Plant City’s train station. The group also built and maintains a large diorama depicting Plant City as it might have appeared in the years 1900-1910 with HO size model trains. The cars, which can be viewed at the 1914 Plant City High School, are typically three to seven inches long. John Setlow, 10-year member and third generation model train railroader, coordinated the move and set up of a portion of the railroad at the train show, where members were on hand to run it and answer questions. The love for playing with trains and sharing railroading facts and stories with others was evident on their faces as they took turns operating the four different set of controls for the electric railroad cars, and that adoration appears it will live on in the next generation of Americans. His mission accomplished, Casey reached up, tugged at her shirt and said, “Grandma, let’s go. I want to play with my train.”

She had to because she knew it was the right thing to do. Leaving behind all four of her children and her grandchildren, Darlene Davis and her husband, Max, moved from Michigan, where she had lived all her life, to Plant City, Fla., in January. Davis is the new executive director of the Pregnancy Care Center, and along with her she brought the passion that was instilled in her heart many years ago. Early in their marriage, Darlene and Max Davis were told they could not have children. Thus, they adopted their first two children at birth from young mothers. Unexpectedly, 13 years later they conceived, and then again two years later. After 30 years of motherhood, Davis was relaxing in the warmth of the Florida sun when she brought her youngest to college at Southeastern University in Lakeland. “I distinctly remember looking forward as the breeze was blowing and feeling the Lord say, ‘You’ve

been given so much; it’s time to give back,’” said Davis. “I wanted to thank young mothers who chose to give life and give that life to me. If it had not been for girls like them, I would not have my first two children.” Davis began volunteering at the Lighthouse Inn in Michigan, a home for women who are single parents. She eventually became the director and remained in that position for three years. Later, she took the director position at Care Pregnancy Center in her town. With her parent’s aging, Davis wanted to be close to them and be able to help more in their lives. When she and her husband decided to move to Lakeland to be closer to her parents, she started searching for a job. She found that the Pregnancy Care Center was in need of a new director. On Jan. 12, she interviewed for the position and two weeks later she was moving away from the place she had lived all her life. continued on next page>

“It has been such a smooth move,” said Davis, who just slid right in as the new director. Although the organizations were very similar, she brings a lot of valuable experience to the table as well. “We are extremely grateful that God led Darlene Davis to us as our new executive director. She brings to this position a wealth of experience, a commitment to service, and leadership skills that are already propelling this ministry toward even better days ahead,” said Renee Corzine, a member of the PCC board of directors. Many care centers in the country use a program called Earn While You Learn, and Davis is bringing it to Plant City. “As much as I love all things a care center can do, Earn While You Learn holds a special place in my heart because it’s where you see lives changed,” she said. The program teaches one-on-one prenatal and parenting classes once a week to mothers. They are rewarded for being responsible, such as
showing up for class and being on time. Their positive behavior is rewarded with “baby bucks,” which can be used to purchase baby items. If a mother does everything she is supposed to during the time of her pregnancy, then she can earn everything she needs to bring her baby home. “It’s successful because it’s not a handout. A handout creates entitlement and people think the world owes them something, but life isn’t handed to you,” said Davis. “This program teaches them how to work for the things they want, while teaching them how to make good decisions. Many times women who were considering an abortion keep the baby after going through our courses.” Everything is almost ready for the program to begin. Davis is hoping for a May 1 opening. After seeing so many lives changed, Davis just beams with excitement about bringing such change to this community.

Often times in the endeavor to get away and relax people often begin to imagine a day spent relaxing on a far off island beach resort. Unfortunately, jaunting off to one’s own island resort for the day may not be an immediate option. But when in search for a peaceful and economical respite, even if only for a few hours, one may travel as far as Keel and Curley Winery, which is located at 5210 W. Thonotosassa Rd., in Plant City. Recently Keel and Curley played host to a Wine and Food Festival that was held both on a Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and 22. The beautiful weather throughout the event made both visitors and vendors alike happy to be enjoying the outdoors. With more than 16 various vendors on site, showcasing arts and crafts as well as food, there was enough variety for everyone. Stunning pieces of handmade jew-
elry, custom-made art glass pieces such as kaleidoscopes, glass boxes, and lamps, precious rock and gems inlaid in silver, hand-poured aromatherapy lotion candles, and handpainted folk art were all on display for both viewing and purchasing. Many of the vendors were local providing patrons with a good chance to support the local economy as well as the local winery. After meandering among the vendors, one can always adjourn to the outside deck with a glass of awardwinning Florida wine or custombrewed beer. With drink in hand, sitting on the deck listening to local musician, Bob Sprague, it’s easy to imagine having traveled far to get away from it all. Not having to let oneself go hungry, food vendors are also available offering choices such as down-home barbecue to local organic whole

foods provided from the Corner Store, which is located in downtown Plant City. Both visitors and vendors alike commented on how well laid out and organized the event was, offering something for everyone. One visitor commented on how peaceful and laid-back the event was. Many are making plans to return for the annual Blueberry Festival, which will be held May 9 and 10. Another event held by the winery is Uncorked, which is held every Friday and Saturday featuring an after-hours
wine bar from 5 p.m. to midnight, happy hour, live music, and fine wine. It’s events like these and others that offer many the opportunity to perhaps experience the winery for the first time. Given the success of the Food and Wine Festival, it is likely that Keel and Curley Winery will continue to delight patrons with a special retreat in Plant City’s backyard. Here’s to the Good Life.

A LONG WAY FROM HOME S t o ry by K r y s t e l K n o w l e s
Jossi Azorin was born in Cuba but left the country 49 years ago with her two children to seek freedom. Through Azorin’s life experiences she learned the strong influence art can have on someone’s life. “I feel very happy and calm when I paint,” said Azorin. Azorin is a well-recognized painter and Women’s Club volunteer in Plant City. Since Azorin was very young, she has always been passionate about painting and sharing her gift with others. “I founded the Plant City art club and been part of the Women’s Club art department for many years,” Azorin said. She donated one of her paintings for the card-playing fundraiser and silent auction for the Women’s Club. She is constantly participating in different art exhibits and other artistic events throughout Plant City and other cities. According to Azorin, artistic

ability runs in the family for many generations. “My mother was an art teacher, my sister teaches art in Miami, and I teach painting,” Azorin said. She finds her inspiration by letting the inspiration find her. “Sometimes just by looking at a window I get inspired to paint, sometimes I am not inspired at all,” said Azorin. “When I paint I listen to classical music to get a peaceful atmosphere.” It usually takes her four hours to complete a painting. Her specialty is painting flowers, ocean views, and abstract paintings. Azorin hopes to visit Cuba and see the country become free of communism one day. “I miss my country, but I hope one day me and my children can go back to visit,” said Azorin. She also hopes to continue inspiring future painters and artists.

MORE THAN JUST A CARD GAME By playing cards, women in Plant City are raising money for college scholarships. S t o ry by K r y s t e l K n o w l e s
General Federation of Women’s Clubs finds different ways to raise money for a good cause. The international organization is geared toward women who want to volunteer their time for a good cause while networking. After a recent card-playing fundraiser, the club continued to succeed in its goal. This year through the success of the event, the Women’s Club is able to give six $1,000 scholarships and one memorial to local adolescents. Some of the prerequisites are the person has to be a senior from Durant or Plant City high schools,
planning to attend Hillsborough Community College, and pass the selection process. “Through these tough times we just want to give some students some help to attend college,” said Eatman. For more than 12 years, the annual card-playing fundraiser is geared toward raising money for scholarship programs for high school seniors, the library, and the heifer project. The event consists of a silent auction, lunch, and a long day of playing either cards or dominoes with friends and women’s club members. Some of the club members donated their

home-cooked food for the guests and some of them donated items for the silent auction. Jean Ann Eatman is the vice president of the club and the chair of the card-playing fundraiser. Eatman has been a part of the organization for approximately 25 years because she said she enjoys seeing the community improve. “I like to call my job title a ‘professional volunteer’ because I spend most of my time volunteering,” said Eatman. She said the card-playing fundraiser is popular because of the relaxed and fun environment. “For a $20 donation, people can socialize, eat, and play table games until they get tired,” said Eatman. This year an estimate of 40 guests attended the card-playing fundraiser and next year they expect more people to attend. “This year many people couldn’t attend because of the bad economy, but we expect the situation to improve by next year,” said Eatman. “I am very grateful we have Lynn as our new president. She is very nice.” Lynn Connor is the new president of the Women’s Club in Plant
City. Even though she has been president for a month, Connor feels confident she can make a lot of positive changes. Connor is known in the community because she is a dedicated volunteer and she also is a teacher of cosmetology. She has been part of the club since she was in high school and now she is excited about her new role in the club. “I am very excited. This is a very community-service based club and I am glad to be a part of it,” Connor said. Some of the programs and projects the club focuses on are the arts, women’s health, community improvement, student scholarships, and much more. Unlike other organizations, the club has six different departments – education, conservation, home life, public and international affairs, and the arts – and its dedicated volunteers help improve the life of many people and help the community become more unison. Through different events like the card-playing fundraiser, the Women’s Club is able to continue its efforts in making the society a better place.

WINNING IS A PERK A local soccer organization instills virtues while maintaining a competitive environment. S t o ry by J o e C a s ta g n o
It’s early Saturday and the sun flares to life as it crests the horizon bringing the promise of another beautiful Florida day. A soft breeze ripples the parking lot dust, carrying the premonition of the day’s heat. A coach unloads his gear – soccer balls, corner flags, cooler, and a med kit – and heads out to the fields. The dark green grass stands in stark contrast to the luminescent chalk outlines of the field and bright orange nets glow in the morning sun.
As he begins to flag the corners, his “girls” begin to trickle in. He calls them girls but they have become young women since he first began coaching some of them six and seven years ago. The under-15 Plant City Lancers girl’s team is a microcosm of the community. As adults, people like to convince themselves that they have overcome the divisions in the community, that everyone has an equal opportunity. Unfortunately, sometimes the
reality doesn’t match their wishes. But here on the soccer fields people check their differences at the parking lot – it matters not where they live, where they were born, or even if they are a U.S. citizen. The soccer players don the colors of their team, and at least for the next few hours leave behind the trappings of their social setting. They are a team, they focus on core principles: hard work, determination, discipline, sportsmanship, and respect. Youth athletics is an opportunity to reinforce those principles and habits that will serve young people as they face the challenges of growing up and becoming adults; it’s not just about winning. The Plant City Lancers have been providing a competitive soccer

experience for youths since 1985. A nonprofit Florida corporation, all of the team’s coaches and board members are strictly volunteers. The team contracts with a number of experienced trainers under the direction of Dominic Stross, the head coach of the Southeastern University women’s team in Lakeland. The Lancers provide playing opportunities for boys and girls ages 9 thru 18 in a competitive soccer environment. Many of the teams play at both state and regional level tournaments, and it is the club’s mission to provide the training and coaching to develop its players to their full potential. If a player’s goal is high school soccer, college soccer, or the Olympic Development Program, then the Lancers can help them take their game to the next level. The home fields are at the Otis Andrews Sports Complex, which is maintained by Plant City’s Parks and Recreation Department. A partnership with the city of Plant City has allowed the Lancers to maintain a competitive fee structure while providing a top tier soccer experience for Plant City and the surrounding area’s youth. March and April bring the regional and state level tournaments and the end the season. The organization looks forward to a brief break from the competing priorities of school and work schedules, three-days-a-week practices, and weekend travel. But when the last game is played and the players hang up their cleats and stow their gear, they experience a brief flicker of sadness as they remember the victories, losses, injuries, and camaraderie of the past season. Not to worry though, tryouts for next season begin the first week of June 2009, and practice shortly thereafter. Anyone who would like to join should stay tuned for exact dates and times or visit www.plantcityfc.com for more information. Those interested can also call Director of Coaching Chris Black at (813) 299-2449 with any questions.

B. M. Smith Motors A Plant City Automobile Dealership Icon S t o ry by P l a n t C i t y P h o to A r c h i v e s
Dr. Olin Wright and his Oldsmobile first introduced the automobile to Plant City in the early 1900s. Dr. R. J. Roberts’s Buick was the third car in Plant City and among the early owners of cars was S. E. Mays. Over the years there were many automobile owners and soon came automobile dealers. One would be Bryan McCain Smith. Smith moved his family to the Tampa area from South Carolina in 1934. He was a people person and a natural salesman, and he sought work in Plant City with the auto dealers and was hired at Jack Ramsey Dodge. An outstanding salesman, he was sought after by competitors. Wanting to set out on his own, he acquired a service station at the Northeast corner of Collins and Alsobrook and began selling used cars. Around 1940, he left the service station business and moved his used car business to West Haines Street, occupying a small plot of land near the State Farmers Market. He lined up his inventory on the South side of Haines Street and ran a reasonably successful business.
Shortly after, Smith had a chance to purchase a larger plot of land on the North side of Haines Street, across from the Salada Foods plant, and opened B. M. Smith Motors. The business was there until 1964. When first setting up B. M. Smith Motors, Smith built a barbecue pit. He loved his barbecue. Over the following years, his barbecues would become an important element in the town’s social fabric. Judges, mayors, bankers, city commissioners, businessmen, teachers, chamber of commerce members, and many others would regularly attend his barbecues. And they would buy his cars. And some, by invitation only, would be invited to the Steak Club cookouts that Smith would hold periodically. Smith had begun selling new American Motors automobiles as a sub-dealer for a friend, Don Schulstad, in Tampa. Although the used car sales were the mainstay, the new car sales proved lucrative. Then, in early 1958, his son, Bryan McCain Smith, Jr., “Mac,” returned from service with the U.S. Navy and joined his father in the automobile business.

In August 1958, AMC offered B. M. Smith Motors a franchise in Plant City and it became an AMC new and used car dealership. But Smith had to agree to construct a separate building, which he did. It was small, but satisfied the requirement. Success grew, and the Smiths needed more space for the operation and about 1963, being convinced that Plant City was growing and expanding south, the Smiths bought a larger plot of land along SR39. Later it became East Park Road. With plans being developed in late 1963, according to certain specs provided by AMC, the Smiths moved forward and completed construction of the new 24,000-square-foot facility by August 1964. One of the first portions completed was the barbecue pit, and on opening day the Smiths served more than 7,000 guests. This was on the outskirts of town, but this was a popular family dealership. Although American Motors, Rambler, accounted for three percent of the car sales in the U.S., the Plant City operation of B. M. Smith and family did well. They later picked up the Renault franchise from Harold Ratcliff after the AMC – Renault arrangement. And in 1970 Smith Motors added Jeep to its offerings. In 1983, at age 86, Smith Sr. passed
away. Mac and his daughter, Marion, continued running the business. Wanting to expand operations, Mac sought Plymouth-Chrysler in Orlando and requested an opportunity to pick up a franchise for the Plant City area. The franchise, however, was on the planning board to go to a Tampa dealer. When that fell through, the Plymouth-Chrysler manager called Mac and offered the franchise, with two conditions: It had to be in a different name, and it had to be in a separate building. The new building would be completed in 1989: AMC Jeep dealership was in the Collins Street building, and the Plymouth-Chrysler-Dodge dealership was in the adjacent new building on East Park Road. With the combined new car dealerships and the used car business alongside each other, overall sales for the next decade were good. In 2001, friends of the family offered to buy the business and they accepted. bringing 57 years of operation to an end. Sources: Bryan M. Smith, Jr., Quintilla Geer Bruton and David E. The federation is lobbying to bring softball back as an Olympic sport. The International Olympic Committee will hold a vote in October 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark, regarding the possible reinstatement in the 2016 Olympics. Softball and baseball were dropped from the Olympics for the 2012 London Games. There are five other sports – rugby, squash, golf, roller sports, and karate – that are competing for those two spots on the program.
In August, 11 softball teams from Canada, China, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Japan, Italy, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Zimbabwe, and Venezuela were picked to play in the Youth World Cup in the Czech Republic. In Plant City, the rites of winter always seem to begin and end with a small, red, sweet fruit: the strawberry. As we enjoy the status the strawberry brings to Plant City, many of us are totally unaware of another Hillsborough County agricultural organization that is equally as effective as the Strawberry Festival and the Florida Strawberry Growers Association. This quiet powerhouse is the Tampa Bay Wholesale Growers Association. TBWG serves its 62-member wholesale production nurseries from its office at 1311 S. Parsons Ave., in Seffner. All phases of the ornamental plant production industry are represented by its members, including container and field grown woody ornamentals, foliage plants, bedding plants, flowering pot plants, fruit trees, liners, and sod. Since its founding in 1973, the annual sales of TBWG’s members have grown to $207,575,011. TBWG supports these sales with the publication of the annual Plant Availability Locator, the operation of the Tampa Spring Expo, and the maintenance of an informative Web site, www.tbwg.org. The Plant Availability Locator, first published in 1975, lists all plants grown by TBWG members and where retailers can purchase them. The Expo
trade show, held every year since 1984, has grown to almost 350 booths, more than 250 exhibitors, a total attendance of more than 3,000, and event sales of more than $7 million. The 2010 Expo has already been scheduled for Feb. 26 and 27, at the Florida State Fairgrounds. TBWG’s reach began to extend far beyond marketing with the hire in 1997 of the son of one of the organization’s founders and a University of Florida journalism graduate. Executive Director Hugh Gramling has built close ties with the State Department of Agriculture, the Florida Legislature, the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the Hillsborough River Basin Board, Hillsborough County government, and the Florida Nurserymen, Growers, and Landscapers Association. TBWG has been instrumental in many successes experienced in Hillsborough County over the past decade, including the development of the 550-acre IFAS research farm in Balm, the establishment of a satellite campus of the UF College of Agricultural and Life Sciences on the Plant City Campus of Hillsborough Community College, and the continued growth and nurturing of the academic programs and facilities of the UF Satellite Campus and the HCC Plant City Campus.

Spring begins at the Tampa Spring Expo, and the vendors’ displays are full of colorful blooms and green foliage. Photo courtesy of TBWG
The fruits of TBWG’s efforts can also be measured by the number and scope of articles and Web site links on the Association’s Web site, including extensive water and landscape information links, agricultural burning rules, multiple invasive plant Web sites, and a lengthy list of agricultural research grants that TBWG has been able to obtain for its members and other agricultural organizations. Next to the strawberry, ornamental plants may not be sexy. But the power and effectiveness of the TBWG are known throughout Florida by those who need to know. Those who need to know nod after hearing about most agricultural successes in Hillsborough County and think…TBWG.

Dr. Bradley Bufkin Brandon Regional Hospital cardiothoracic surgeon. A common reason why people do not enjoy going to a hospital is, obviously, it is usually not the most pleasant experience. Dr. Bradley Bufkin, a cardiothoracic surgeon with Brandon Region Hospital, understands this, and he is doing what he can to make his patients’ experience at the hospital a pleasant one. The heart surgeon feels there is more to performing cardiothoracic surgery than just the technical side of things. Dr. Bufkin, who strongly believes in taking time to get to know his patients, said he believes that if you sit down with your patients, and their families, then they become more comfortable and their mind is in a better state. He added that he feels
the mind is a major tool in healing, saying that if the brain is healthy and is positive about healing, then time and time again the recovery process after surgery is successful. “When you come to Brandon Regional, you’re going to feel special,” said Dr. Bufkin. “I want to know about you, and not just what is wrong and what brings you in here. I want to know what your hobbies are, what your family’s hobbies are; I want to know what makes you laugh.” Dr. Bufkin applies his get-toknow-my-patients technique to his extensive knowledge of the heart, making his treatments cutting edge. Growing up in west rural Texas, Dr. Bufkin attended and graduated from the Baylor University College
of Medicine and later attended Emory. After that, he spent nine years at Park West Hospital, which is a top100 hospital. He focuses on several areas of the heart, including repairing heart valves instead of replacing them. He also specializes in atrial fibrillation, which is a common car-
diac arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm. Dr. Bufkin not only brings a cordial attitude to each patient, but also a wealth of knowledge that helps to make Brandon Regional Hospital’s cardiac program top notch.

Dr. Ignacio G. Duarte Brandon Regional Hospital cardiothoracic surgeon. Dr. Duarte Anyone who knew Dr. Duarte, and his family, growing up most likely would not be surprised to find out that today he is a physician -his grandfather was a physician and his father was an anesthesiologist. He recalled being around the medical field as child with his father’s beeper going off and working long ours, but one instance had a profound effect on his career choice. “I would go with my dad to the hospital and make rounds and see patients... I went with him one day to see a surgery -- an open-heart surgery. He was sitting there with his anesthesiology machine and showing me this and explaining that,” said Dr. Duarte. “That’s when I realized I liked the heart and would wonder
what made it work.” After attending medical school at Columbia Universtiy, he no longer wonders how it works, as he is equipped with an extensive knowledge of cardiothoracic surgery. Instead, he is pushing Brandon Regional Hospital’s cardiac program to new heights. He uses highly advanced technologies at Brandon Regional, striving to make surgery less invasive than it used to be in the past. Through these processes, the healing time from heart surgeries has decreased. Weeks of recovery time in the hospital is not as common as it used to be. Dr. Duarte can be reached by calling Brandon Regional Hospital at (813) 681-5551.

There’s something about budding leaves on the trees and the smell of damp earth that draws the gardeners to their knees. Armed with trowels and cultivators, they dig and poke, spending hours at a time in early-season enthusiasm. Little wonder that they awaken the next day all stiff and sore. Of course, it would have been better to limber up the body with stretching exercises and then go easy the first few days in the garden – but few people do. We want everything now – The lawn looking just so, the flower garden in place, the vegetables all planted and staked. There’s help available at the Doctor of Chiropractic office to ease your aches and pains. Expert adjustments can restore spinal integrity; ease the discomfort your feeling and help muscles relax again. Special Note: On May 10th is Mother’s Day- On behalf of everyone from our office we say Thanks and God Bless to all mother’s, grandmothers, and all women who have been a blessing to others. Blessings, Dr. Dukes and Staff

Markley Chiropractic and Acupuncture Markley Chiropractic and Acupuncture is a family-owned practice that has been dedicated to providing high-quality healthcare to the Plant City area since 1980. Dr. Guy Markley started into practice at that time. In 1996, Judy Markley joined the practice as an acupuncturist. She has also extensively studied nutrition and allergy elimination. In late 2003, Dr. Robyn Markley joined the practice. Chiropractic is one of the largest primary healthcare professions in the world. Chiropractors find and correct misalignments of the spine that can affect all systems in the body and cause many conditions. Our primary goal is to alleviate your initial symptoms and identify the cause of your problem. Our
practice integrates chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, nutrition, as well as nutritional testing and allergy elimination. The nutritional testing is a way to identify nutritional deficiencies and dysfunctions. It is a tool to determine what supplementation is necessary and monitor the patient’s progress. Acupuncture is an effective and powerful practice that helps to control pain and increases the body’s ability to function by balancing the body’s vital energy. Health care without drugs may seem unusual to some, but more and more people are finding success for health problems that traditional methods may not have resolved. Our goal is to help our patients lead a productive, healthy, and enjoyable life. At Markley Chiropractic

Right At Home After caring for Tino Suarez’s 86-year-old mother and losing their jobs, Tino and his wife, Debra Suarez, decided to open Right At Home, a chain that connects caregivers with older adults needing assistance. Right At Home is a franchise started in 1999 and has 160 locations throughout the United States, soon expanding into Europe. Driving around town, people are always noticing our Right At Home van and frequently ask us, “What kind of service does Right at home provide?” We tell them we do nonmedical care and work primarily with the elderly and disabled, typically companion care, which is focused more on the client’s environment. Say you have someone suffering from arthritis and they cannot bend over to make the bed or prepare a meal. We help them stay comfortable
and independent. Anytime a senior is prescribed more than 3 pill bottles, there is always a chance for medication error. So much that 28 percent run the risk of being admitted to a hospital and 41 percent may wind up being admitted to a nursing home. Even worse, medication error is the fifth leading cause of death. Tino and Debra have started an awareness campaign within the medical community in the Plant City, Zephyrhills, and Lakeland areas to help lower these medical errors. They are urging doctors and social workers in hospitals to adapt to their Right At Home Organized Medication Program. This program eliminates all those confusing pill bottles and organizes their medicines in a pull-out box. Their pills are placed in separate
dosage envelopes marked with the date, time, and name of each prescription. In case of an emergency, someone does not have to search the whole house for all the pill bottles because their box has each prescription attached to the box. It is a real peace of mind for those children that are caregiving at home and for the certified nurses assistants too. You no longer have to worry if
your loved one is taking his medicine in compliance with the doctor. Just check their envelopes.

What’s new at
By Aaron Oberlin and Brian West South Florida Baptist Hospital, which is located at 301 N. Alexander St., has been serving Plant City since the 1940s.
South Florida Baptist Hospital has been a cornerstone in Plant City for several generations. In fact, there are several youths from the city who were born there and have parents who were birthed there too. As the city and generations continue to grow, so does the hospital. Soon, a new addition to the hospital will be complete. There will be a section completely dedicated to orthopedics, and along with a new wing is a relatively new orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Scott Goldsmith. He talked about the hospital’s endeavor and what drew him to the great city of Plant City.

FOCUS: “Tell us a little bit about your background.” Dr. Goldsmith: “I actually grew up here in Tampa, Fla. I was born up in New Jersey but I moved here when I was younger with my family. My father was an orthopedic surgeon as well. He initially started in Brandon and then came out here to Plant City for a number of years before he had to concentrate his practice on Brandon. I went off to undergraduate education at the University of Michigan, and then went off to Chicago for five years where not only did I get an M.D. at Chicago Medical School, but I also met my beautiful wife. Then I went to New York City for eight years to do my residency and fellowship and extensive training. And then we decided to come back and join Dad again in practice. We wanted to come back to Plant City, and we started here about a year ago.” FOCUS: “So I understand you do some work at South Florida Baptist Hospital, and I heard about a new orthopedic center that is being built. Tell me about this new center.”
Dr. Goldsmith: “Well, the hospital has myself and my father and other orthopedic surgeons who are on staff right now, and they are planning on renovating a fourth floor that is dedicated to orthopedic care only. That would be for total joint replacements, hip fractures, and sports injuries where perhaps people might have to stay over for the night. “The entire floor is set up to maximize orthopedic comfort and care. They are even planning on having a media entertainment room. “They are trying to make those three- or four-day stays away from home as comfortable as possible for the patients, and I think it is going to be a wonderful experience for all those involved. In New York they had some centers that were dedicated to orthopedic care. When everyone is on board from the nursing staff to the physical therapists, it makes the practice of medicine much smoother. I think it is a wonderful goal that South Florida has set for themselves.” FOCUS: “I would imagine it would also help relieve some of the trauma that comes with going to the hospital.” Dr. Goldsmith: “No question about it. For example, when you are indicated for a total joint replacement by the ortho-
pedic surgeon, to have a hospital there that is going to take you three or four weeks before the surgery and teach you what is going to happen to you even before it happens, prepare you mentally and physically, and bring you in the day of surgery and walk you through your three- or four-day stay there; you can’t beat that. There’s no question about it that if your brain is OK, then the rest of the body will follow. So you could get the best total knee replacement, but if you’re not comfortable (in the mind), you’re not going to have a good result. And that’s where the hospital has really reached out and is trying to make it good experience for the patient and the family. “The rooms will be private rooms, so there won’t be any double-occupancy rooms. The family will be able to stay in there with pullout beds. A lot of these patients are older and don’t like to be alone or away from family at night, so I think it is a great idea. Hey I might stay there if it is really nice.” FOCUS: “Do you have a timeframe for when the new center will be finished?” Dr. Goldsmith: “They’ve cleared the floor already. My understanding is it’s only a three- to five-month process to get that floor up and running. So I’m thinking that within the next six months (summertime) we hope to have the orthopedic floor ready to fly. And I will say we are not slowing any business down. We are still usContinued on page 70

ing all aspects of the hospital to do our surgeries.” FOCUS: “So what do you think about Plant City?” Dr. Goldsmith: “Oh, it’s been fantastic so far. It’s really greeted me with open arms, starting with the community. And certainly the hospital has done a tremendous job of bringing me onto the staff and getting my name out into the community. I only see a positive future for me here in Plant City.” FOCUS: “Where is your office located at?” Dr. Goldsmith: “Right now we have rented some space. We wanted to start small and hope for the best, and fortunately we have a wonderful problem in that we’ve run out of space. We’re currently renting in 102 Southern Oaks over by Dr. Kulyk and the Tooth Caboose.” FOCUS: “Now that’s a landmark. Good location.” Dr. Goldsmith: “Oh yes. Absolutley. I can always find the Tooth Ca-
boose if I get lost in Plant City. We’re now looking to build a nice office for ourselves and be here for many years to come.”
Dr. Goldsmith: “One of the reasons I chose orthopedic surgery is it is cutting edge, so to speak. With orthopedics we are constantly pushing the edge. There are some exceedingly intelligent folks out there who are coming out with new products every day to make these replacements of the joint last not 10, 20, 30 years, but longer than that. And not only that, but they are making them so you can do things we never thought they would be able to do with a total joint replacement. I’m talking about running a marathon, snow skiing – the reality is we are pushing the limits.
FOCUS: “So when did you become interested in studying medicine?”
“And joint replacement, obviously, isn’t the only thing pertaining to orthopedics. There are multiple areas, such as ACL surgery, knee arthroscopy, and others.”
Dr. Goldsmith: “I can give a great story, and I can give you the real story. Which one do you want?”
FOCUS: “Do you have any comical stories about your time as a surgeon?”
FOCUS: “The one your father would want you to tell.”
Dr. Goldsmith: “When I first went into surgery I wanted to do cardiothoracic surgery, or heart bypass surgery, and I wanted save the world. I had high aspirations. But I’m glad I chose the profession I did because for the most part I deal with healthy patients who have problems of inconvenience rather than problems of life and death. So I love having fun with my patients. My parents taught me a motto when I was young, and it was called, ‘Work hard, play hard.’ If I am in a room with a patient for 10 minutes, seven minutes of that is serious and taking care of the problem. The other three is joking and kidding. So I try to have a little comedy with all of my patients.”
Dr. Goldsmith: “Well, actually it has to do with my father. I recall having to go to the emergency room with him one day and he had a small child, 7 or 8 years old – I probably wasn’t that much younger – but he had to fix his broken arm. I remember the child crying and crying and my dad saying, ‘I’m gonna do this on three. One, and then Crack!’ He had put it back into place. And before he knew it the kid had stopped crying and was smiling, and he had a lollipop. I said, ‘That is definitely something I want to do.’ So my dad had a major influence on my life. That’s actually the real story too.”

Students of all ages, whether child or adult, are welcome to schedule a time to come for horse riding lessons. No matter your level of experience, the trainer can assist you and teach you how to ride properly and take care of horses. Both English and western lessons are available. Experienced caretakers train and keep horses healthy with basic veterinary care, grooming, and exercise. Plenty of paddocks are provided so horses can roam and graze. She had adopted three horses with
the intentions of tending to a smaller, more personal horse farm. The Rabons take pride in putting the safety and care for animals first, as well as working towards making every guest’s stay a fun one. "We just want everyone to be happy and have a good time," said Victoria Rabon. Not far from several horse trails, RRR Farm’s atmosphere acquaints guests with peace and nature. As an investor, you can get plenty of advice from financial experts on the evening news or cable financial shows. But you may actually be able to learn some deeper truths about investing by observing other professionals — such as winemakers. At first glance, you might not see what these “guardians of the grape” can teach you about building an investment portfolio. After all, they’re shaping Sangiovese while you’re seeking stocks, they’re bottling Burgundy while you’re buying bonds, and they’re mastering Malbec while you’re monitoring mutual funds. Where’s the connection? Start by considering the life cycle of wine and the concept of “vintage.” For example, a particular wine is labeled a 2005 vintage if it is made from grapes that were predominantly grown and harvested in 2005. Yet given the requirements of wine production, this 2005 vintage may not actually hit the markets until 2008 — and some aficionados may think the wine won’t taste its best until 2018. If you translated this type of scenario to the financial world, you could say that the 2008 investment “vintage” was not promising, given that the value of almost all investments — even the quality ones — fell last year. But if you were to hold these quality investments for the long term — as you should, because investing is a long-term activity — you might find that the 2008 vintage investments may eventually become productive vehicles that can help you achieve your financial goals. So, what lessons can you learn from winemakers? Here are a few suggestions: – Be patient. Winemakers put a lot of time, effort and money into planting today’s grapes — for which they will not see one penny of profit
for many years. Yet they have the discipline to wait patiently until the products of their labors come to fruition. Are all their wines successful? No — and all your investments may not be, either. But given enough time, quality investments can usually help you work toward your financial goals. – Have faith in your strategy. Wine drinkers’ tastes can change from year to year. Yet winemakers don’t rip out their vineyards and replant them with today’s “hot” varietal. Instead, they cultivate the grapes they’ve planted, make the best wine they can and maintain their belief that their products will find a market. As an investor, you can’t allow yourself to be swayed by today’s hot tips and trends. Instead, build a portfolio of quality investments that can stand the test of time. – Adapt your goals to your situation. One of the most famous winemaking regions in the world, Napa Valley, contains a number of microclimates that vary by temperature, rainfall and soil. Napa Valley winemakers know which grapes will do best in which microclimate, and they concentrate their efforts accordingly. And you, as an individual investor, should make your investment decisions based on your own “microclimate” — your risk tolerance, family situation, time horizon and other factors. In other words, you should choose those investments that are best suited for you and that have the best chance to help you meet your goals. Investing, like winemaking, is filled with challenges. But by observing how winemakers work, you may learn some things that can eventually help you raise a glass to your own success.

She and her late husband, Robert Jaeb, built a very successful convenience store chain through hard work and dedication to their business. Why I am a success: I believe success is a lifetime process and as a Christian, my criteria are based on God's word. Take the Biblical example of Paul: He measured his own success by a single criterion, remaining faithful to Christ no matter what circumstances he faced. One of my favorites quotes is, "Success is never final and failure is never fatal." What's next? I will continue my education in the tea industry by attending the World Tea Expo being held in June 2009, in Las Vegas. There is so much to discover about this ancient beverage. In the words of James Norwood Pratt, "Tea is a lifelong learning experience." I hope to continue to grow a successful and thriving business that will be a positive influence in our community.

Owner of Elite Home Fitness. Background: I’m a certified personal trainer. I worked at Gold’s Gym for six years doing operations, day-to-day management, and personal training coordination. I was an area director at the Athletic Club for eight years. Five years ago I started my own business. I had the unique idea of bringing my fitness knowledge and my equipment to people’s houses to get them into the best shape of their lives. Aspirations: My aspirations are to get people as healthy as possible – physically and mentally. I encourage people to eat properly, feel confident, and look good. Inspiration: Fitness has been a part of my life since I was 13. I discovered
the confident feeling that conditioning with weights could give. Later on, I realized combining nutrition with conditioning could change everyone’s lives. Why I am a success: The reason why I am a success is because I bring out the best in my clients. I help them realize their potential and meet their goals. I always show up on time, keep a positive attitude, and push them to their personal limits. What’s next? My plan is to keep changing people’s lives through fitness, and making a difference in Plant City by improving its residents’ health.

real estate walden lake review
SEVERAL UPDATES FOR WALDEN LAKE RESIDENTS s u b m i t t e d by N ata l i e S w e e t
The Walden Lake Community Association Annual Meeting was held April 2 at the Walden Lake Golf and Country Club and there were two important items for which people could vote. The membership elected one new director, Jim Chancey, and reelected two directors, Jan Griffin and Bob Williamson. All of the directors are homeowners in Walden Lake and serve on the board for the betterment of the community. These are not paid positions and take much of their time, so when you see them, please remember to thank them for all they do for us. The other important item was the vote on the assessment for the office building and maintenance building. After much discussion for and against, the vote was taken and
passed with 299 yeses and 101 nos. The board will begin with the plans to go forward. Dick Shiller spoke about the dog park and the success they have had raising funds. Construction is expected to begin this month. Lowe’s has committed to a discount and Jay Allen is donating labor. Dick gave special thanks to all that have worked on this project. There were other items reported at the annual meeting. Marlene Merrin now has 11 communities where she is handling the deed restriction compliance. It was reported that the communities are pleased with how it’s helping in their neighborhoods. Parking in the park has improved and most are now residents with their stickers. The enforcement is working,
84 • FOCUS Magazine plant city • april 15, 2009 – may 15, 2009
which gives residents more room to park their vehicles. Off-road driving continues to be a problem on Griffin and Timberlane. There is a cost to fill in the ruts. The board asked if you see this happening, then to please alert Tom Duramus at the office. There has been a bobcat running around and has been seen in the Paddocks, Preserve, Tanglewood, and Sutton Woods. Please keep that in mind with your small animals and children. It’s also mating season for alligators and they will be on the move looking for a mate. Please be watchful. Landscaping and upgrading signage for the neighborhood entrances will begin now that the frost is past. Most entrances are beginning to perk up, but many plants were lost during the freeze this year. Greg Horwedel, a board member and assistant city manager, spoke on water restrictions. Plant City is still able to water one time per week on your allotted day. Greg also
mentioned that Mark Woodward is the “water conservation expert” for the City of Plant City, and he will come out and inspect your irrigation system for free. You can call Woodward at city hall at (813) 546-4200. Our camera at the gatehouse on Trapnell was turned toward the Trapnell Ridge subdivision fence to aid the police in catching graffiti artists, which was successful. The camera is now back in position. Walden Lake Golf and Country Club has a new and improved Web site, www.waldenlakegolf.com, where you can find its specials, an online store, event calendar, and more. They are planning pool parties and other events to take place during the summer, so check the calendar often. The pool is available for rental as well as the three banquet rooms. There are late afternoon golf specials and summer membership specials. Call Michele Newsome at (813) 7521171 extension 222 for all your event and membership needs.

If you had a chance to get $8,000 right now, I bet you wouldn’t turn it down. Think about it, thousands of dollars of free money seems surreal. However, it is possible – in the form of a tax credit. The quickest way to make $8,000 these days is to buy a house if you are a first-time homebuyer. The government previously had an incentive in the form of a tax credit of up to $7,500 for first-time homebuyers, but it was a zero percent interest loan that had to be paid back in $500 installments during a 15-year duration. This was not a bad deal at all since you could have essentially put that money in a CD or any other interest bearing account and come head, worst-case scenario. Now the government has essentially upped the ante to encourage home ownership. The new bill allows for a tax credit (better than a tax deduction) of up to $8,000. See below for information from
the IRS Web site: This year, qualifying taxpayers who buy a home before Dec. 1, 2009, can claim the credit on either their 2008 or 2009 tax returns. They do not have to repay the credit, provided the home remains their main home for 36 months after the purchase date. They can claim 10 percent of the purchase price up to $8,000, or $4,000 for married individuals filing separately. The amount of the credit begins to phase out for taxpayers whose adjusted gross income is more than $75,000, or $150,000 for joint filers. For purposes of the credit, you are considered to be a first-time homebuyer if you, and your spouse if you are married, did not own any other main home during the three-year period ending on the date of purchase. This is not advice. It is only facts. Anyone who interested should consult a tax professional on these matters.

As of this moment, we have survived the first quarter of 2009…can you believe it? As much of the doom and gloom that has been presented, the strength of the people is what will bring the country out of economic turmoil. Buyers are buying as interest rates continue to drop below five percent. As previously reported, there are definite signs that help us to feel better about the future. Following are a few facts about the real estate market in Plant City that covers the past 12 months. In Plant City, the number of homes for sale (on the market and not sold) in 2008 was 557 compared to 475 in 2009. This reflects a 14.7 percent decrease in inventory – a positive sign. Homes sold in the same period show an increase of more than 11 percent – another good sign. An even better indicator is the number of homes “under contract” or pended, which reveals an increase of 46 percent from February 2008 to February 2009.
You may hear a real estate agent talk in terms of “price per heated square foot,” which is a common pricing strategy used in market analysis. In February 2008, the average price per heated square foot (based on all types of homes being marketed) was at $95. This average has dropped 24 percent to an average of $73 through February 2009. Interestingly, in the past six months this average has fluctuated from a high of $108 to $73, which is largely due to increased activity in the foreclosure market. So, we are still in a depreciating market, which means that there are more homes coming on the market than there are homes being sold. Prices may continue to drop. Some analysts predict prices to drop another 10 – 15 percent through 2009/2010 (nationally), and at some point will begin a slow appreciation of about three percent per year. The key word is “slow.” What should you do? Buy now…sell if you must.

Something very interesting has been happening in our local real estate market. Due to market conditions and many government incentives available to first time home buyers, the entry level home market has really taken off! In fact, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find nice homes in the entry level price ranges. Just a few weeks ago, Team Wainoris listed an entry level home, and within 2 days we had 2 offers! What does this mean? This means opportunity, opportunity, opportunity! If you currently own an entry level price point home....now is the time to move up! The mid-level priced homes are not moving as fast, so there are many wonderful choices...often at very good prices!! Unlike the market over the last few years, if we price your home correctly, we can probably get your entry level home sold fairly quickly! So what are you waiting for? Have you outgrown your current home? Were you ready to move up but were worried that you could never sell your entry level home? Well, worry no more! Call us here at Team Wainoris, and let us help you get movin’ on up!

Plant City High School’s Emily Hoy has had her share of exciting moments playing soccer during the past 15 years, but none were more exciting than scoring the winning goal against King High School earlier this season. “It was senior night. We took a 2-0 lead at half time. King scored two goals to begin the second half. Then they scored another goal. We tied the game with about five minutes left and then I was able to chip one in over the goalie’s head with about 30 seconds left. It was emotional. My teammates mobbed me,” Hoy excitedly said. The next exciting event in Emily’s life involves preparing to transition from high school to college. You see, she recently signed a national letter of intent to play soccer for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. Liberty
is a Christian school that plays in the Division 1 Big South Conference. She will be leaving in July and getting accustomed to college life before the season begins in late August. Two of Emily’s biggest fans are her parents. Her father Greg owns a trucking company and her mother Debbie Fox Hoy is a testing coordinator at Plant City High School. Debbie was an outstanding athlete herself and attended the University of Tampa on an athletic scholarship to play volleyball. Emily’s journey to this level began at the age of 3 in Plant City Recreation Department’s soccer program. At the age of 10, she began playing travel ball. Three years later, she joined the Lakeland Lazers, coached by Jason Streets. After three years with the Lazers, she joined Real Salt

Lake, which is an elite travel team coached by Ben Strawbridge. Strawbridge is now the head soccer coach at Florida Southern College and Streets is his assistant. Incidentally, they were also childhood friends and graduates of Liberty. Following impressive freshman and sophomore years in which Emily was named the Raiders’ Defensive Most Valuable Player and a second team All-Western Conference selection, Hoy took the recommendation of her travel ball coaches and attended a summer soccer camp at their alma mater. Hoy verbally committed to Liberty and sat out her junior season to avoid any injuries and to concentrate on her schoolwork – she has a 4.7-weighted grade point average. As a senior, she captained the Raider team, was named MVP, and was a first team All-Conference selection. During her recruiting visit, Emily liked what she saw. “First of all, I loved the campus. In addition, the professors are willing to work with you. Each class starts and
ends with prayer. The soccer team has a devotion before every game. They even pray for the players on the other team.” Emily’s faith means a lot to her and Liberty offers the atmosphere and accountability for which she is looking. Liberty also offers the courses that will prepare her for her life’s work as a forensic accountant. She wants to be able to investigate fraud and corporate embezzlement. Obtaining a degree with a double major in accounting and international business and with a minor in criminal justice should provide adequate career preparation. Emily hopes to have more exciting moments for Liberty like the one she had on senior night as the Flames try to improve on last season’s record of 3-12-2. As emotional as her lastminute goal against King may have been, it will not compare to her wellplanned goals for her life’s work.

Surrounded by a loving family and supportive coaches who expect nothing short of a best effort, failure has never been an option for softball player Megan Still. She exhibits drive, strength, and dedication in the sport, making her the April’s athlete of the month. Still has played on the Plant City High School softball team all four years and now as a senior she leads the team as the pitcher. But rising to the top of her
game did not come over night. She has put forth a lot of time and hard work to become the great player that she is now. During season, not only does she practice with the team five to six days a week, but she also takes pitching lessons after practice at the University of South Florida. The pitcher is the most important position on the team and requires a vast amount of mental focus and consistency during every game. Even

during off season she has practice every day to enhance her pitching skills. She also pulls the team together by trying to keep everyone focused and pushes her teammates to keep a serious, but positive attitude during each game. Still says that during a game, “I’m in my own world and I don’t let anything affect my game…from the minute a batter steps on the plate it’s all business for me.” The head coach of the PCHS softball team, Heidi Kouveras, also sees Still’s dedication to the game and believes she has huge potential to be a successful player in college. “She is dedicated 110 percent and trains harder than most of the athletes I’ve seen her age. She conditions at the level of a college athlete,” said Kouveras. Growing up, Still began playing softball for little league when she was 9 years old. Her dad was always the one to push her to play better and work harder in the sport. “He would sit on the bucket and catch me every day,” said Still.
She also considers her mom to be her No. 1 fan and believes that they boost her confidence by coming to every game. In addition, she has gained much experience throughout her years playing for the Tampa Mustangs travel-ball team, traveling to places like Colorado, Ohio, North Carolina, and South Carolina. She now plays for Team Florida. This year for the PCHS team, Still hopes for them to be in the final four at State and for her and her teammates to give all they have for the rest of the season. Individually she is striving to be titled one of the top pitchers in the county and to receive a scholarship to play softball in college. Overall, Still believes softball has shaped her to be the hard worker that she is today. “It has made me a stronger person and has sculpted me to better handle real-world problems outside of softball," said Still. During a game there is a lot of pressure and dealing with it has helped me not to stress the little problems in life.”

Plant City’s Connection to the Majors Rip Sewell – The Inventor of the Blooper. S t o ry by J o e Bo w l e s
Most who pass by the grave of Truett Banks Sewell, buried alongside his wife Margaret in Memorial Park Cemetery, have little knowledge of the colorful life that this man once had as Plant City’s connection to Major League Baseball. Sewell was born in Decatur, Ala., on May 11, 1907. After graduation from high school, Sewell was offered a scholarship to play football at Vanderbilt University but dropped out after a year. Sewell stayed in the Nashville area and played for a semi-pro baseball team where he was scouted and signed by the Nashville Volunteers, a minor league team that later sold his contract to the Detroit Tigers. Sewell broke into the majors in 1932 and played briefly before being sent back to the minors. In 1936, Sewell came to Plant City with the Buffalo Bisons, a minor league club, for spring training. It was then that Sewell met and later married Plant City native, Margaret Abbott. Margaret was responsible for giving Truett his nickname “Rip.”
The following season Rip was traded to the Pittsburg Pirates and eventually worked his way to the majors to become a starting right-hander. In 1940, he won 16 games and the following season he won an additional 14 games, but it was an unfortunate accident that would make Sewell one of the most successful pitchers of the decade. During the off-season, Rip accidentally shot his right foot with two loads of buckshot, resulting in the loss of his big right toe. Because of the injury, Sewell had to alter his delivery. One of the products was a more open delivery and the other was the invention of a pitch that would make him famous. Sewell’s “Blooper,” or “eephus” pitch, would rise about 25 feet in the air and float toward the batter until it descended straight downward into the catcher’s mitt. Batters had a hard time making contact with the pitch, and when they did it usually resulted in a pop up. The addition of this pitch would make Rip Sewell one of the most feared pitchers in baseball. In 1942, Sewell won 17 games. He followed

that with 21-win seasons in 1943 and 1944. He was selected to four consecutive All-Star teams, and in 1943 finished sixth in the balloting for league Most Valuable Player. No one was ever able to hit a home run off of the eephus pitch until the 1946 All-Star game when Ted Williams took one deep. Some feel that the friendly battle between Sewell and Williams may have been the catalyst that revived the All-Star game that had been waning in popularity. Sewell recorded 143 career-pitching victories. He was an excellent fielder and a decent batter. One season he batted .313 and had a lifetime batting average of .203, not bad for a pitcher. Sewell retired as a player in 1949 and spent a few years managing minor league teams such as the Charlotte Rebels and the New Orleans Pelicans before settling down in Plant City. He

Senior of the Month is a prestigious award given to graduating students at Plant City High school who show an immense amount of dedication to their school academics and a positive attitude in every aspect of their involved activities in school and out of school. Those who wish to receive this award must submit a formal resume showing all their extracurricular activities since the ninth grade, as well as a typed list or essay explaining the activities that he or she was involved with for the month applying. Past winners have been consistently involved with clubs like National Honor Society, student council, Senior Executive Council, FFA, Best Buddies, etc. Besides clubs, those excelling seniors have also been involved with activities like volleyball, soccer, football, band, drama, and more. But why do so many seniors strive for this title? Not only does the title make fellow classmates look up to those seniors as a role model, but it also enables the awarded seniors to be a part of the 2009 prom King and Queen court. The seniors for February were announced in March as Jeffrey Jacobsen and Amanda Napier.
Jacobsen has been a dedicated student and athlete all four years of high school, playing on the varsity baseball team since the ninth grade, as well as being a volunteer coach on a Plant City little league T-ball team. Furthermore, he has also volunteered in the community for activities like the Rotary club at the Christmas parade, Plant City Children’s Theater, and helped out at United Food Bank. During the month of February he not only practiced with the baseball team every day after school, but he also worked 20 hours weekly at Premiere Cinemas. In addition, he received an acceptance letter from Florida Southern College and St. Leo University. Some of the activities Napier has been involved with since ninth grade are the PCHS Key club, Best Buddies, Students Against Drunk Driving, and has done much volunteer work with her church like disaster recovery projects and mission trips for immigrants and migrant children. She also has work experience as a camp counselor and receptionist, and she was an employee at Cold Stone Creamery. Moreover, she is ranked No. 8 in the senior class and received acceptance to the University of Florida, in Febru-

ary. This year she is also a part of the SEC and Prom Committee. Besides being academically successful, she also gives a lot of her time as a co-
captain of Judy’s Art In Motion competitive Dance team, which competed at the International Dance Challenge in March.

The economic Armageddon, or not? “The problem being in the media, and I don’t mean the ‘drive-bys’ is knowing what and how to report in a way that is responsible and of benefit to viewers. I can find an expert who will defend or rip apart every ‘as-if-true’ statement in this column. They will defend practically to the death their approach to solving this huge economic spider with more tentacles than Medusa.”
S u b m i t t e d by A l Ru e c h e l
Let’s get this straight. Nobody is able to predict the future 100 percent of the time. I take that back. We are all going to die. Now that we’ve established that, let’s talk “economy.” Here are the facts: We are in territory we’ve never traversed. We are spending more money than ever. If you have a 401k, then it went down just over 62 percent on an average, a bit less if you held mostly cash positions. The stock market has experienced its greatest loss in history. The value of all homes in the country has dropped dramatically. The world is in the midst of its own recession. Com-
panies are laying off people in record numbers. No one political party or individual has the answers to solve this economic mess overnight. The value of the dollar is dropping around the world. We don’t know when the market is going to recover. Sorry, but that’s about all of the facts that cannot be denied. Now comes the long, long list of other items that are being passed of as fact: If we didn’t bail out AIG, or the banks, or the automakers, it will lead to the total collapse of the American economy. We should stand back because the marketplace will
correct itself through bankruptcies and free-market principles. The stock market goes down but will ultimately come back. The rich should be taxed more than the poor because they can afford it. The only establishment that can bring us out of this crisis is the federal government. Once we fix the real estate market everything will get back on track. Gold is the only answer to preserving wealth. Tell that to the folks in New Orleans who would have given every gold coin in the world for a bottle of water. And finally you have the extremists on both sides. There are those who claim we are on the path to Armageddon and total anarchy. Others line themselves in the reform category and believe government needs to do more and not less in correcting economic and social evils. Both sides are attempting to exploit the crisis to their advantage though they would be the last to admit it. The problem being in the media, and I don’t mean the “drive-bys” is
knowing what and how to report in a way that is responsible and of benefit to viewers. I can find an expert who will defend or rip apart every “as-iftrue” statement in this column. They will defend practically to the death their approach to solving this huge economic spider with more tentacles than Medusa. And here’s the part that kills us average Americans: We are dealing with such huge numbers we simply can’t get a handle on the size of this dilemma. And, the fact remains economic theory is only proven when it does or doesn’t work – not to mention the role that investor psychology plays in driving Wall Street up or down. So here’s the deal. I stick to the facts. I let the experts tell their story. You have to decide which answers make the most sense to you. Seek out the financial advisers that have a balanced perspective and inspire your confidence. Now go and get a good night sleep because you never know what could happen tomorrow.

BriCk house CafÉ the lOCal reStaUrant iS FreSh, FaSt, and OFFerS great FOOd at a COMpetitive priCe. S t o ry by w e n dy S . b r O w n
Nowadays people seem to be too busy for many things, including preparing their own meals. Anyone who misses mom’s cooking doesn’t need to worry – the problem is solved. The Brick House Café has a table just for them. Come for breakfast, lunch, or dinner for a fabulous home cooked meal at just the right price. After only being open for three months, the Brick House Café is becoming a staple to the locals. Unlike some other restaurants, 90 percent of the menu is homemade. They cut and weigh their own meat, patty their own burgers, roll out each biscuit, and freshly make each and every order. Homemade consistent meals are served every time. Sherry operates the café. She has lived in Plant City for 35 years, and has 18 years in the restaurant business. She loves her customers, enjoys their compliments, and enjoys seeing that everyone leaves her family-run establishment satisfied.
She learned to cook from her grandma, who could make anything taste scrumptious. Her French toast recipe comes from grandma. Sherry welcomes everyone to the Brick House Café and says, “You’ll become a regular part of our family.” The Brick House Café has an extensive breakfast menu. Monday through Friday breakfast is served until 11:30 a.m. and all day on weekends. Early risers can get a substantial breakfast of two eggs with sausage or bacon, choice of grits or hash browns or home fries, toast or biscuits, and all for only $3.75. Try the gigantic three-egg omelets, pecan waffles, decadent blueberry pancakes, or the classic biscuits and gravy. The children’s platter of two pancakes and two slices of crispy bacon is only $2.75. You won’t walk away hungry. Many times workers have trouble getting into and out of a restaurant and getting back to work during their

lunch hour. Sherry promises and delivers fast lunches that won’t blow your budget. She can have you in and out in no time. By the way, the steak sub is out of this world. It is a toasty sub roll, grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms, grilled steak, and then covered in melted cheese. First-time customer George Johnson said, “The bacon cheeseburger with fries was delicious.” Ken Stevins, another first-timer, said, “My country fried steak was great. I live just around the corner, so I’ll be back.”
Both Johnson and Stevins were pleasantly stuffed from their hearty lunches. For the health conscious, you can try the Greek or chef salad for $5.95. The grilled chicken salad has a generous amount of chicken and is only $6.95. Fabulous homemade soups are freshly made every morning and are full of the best ingredients. Other lunch delights are deli-style sandwiches, club sandwiches, and grilled items. The Reuben sandwich is absolutely amazing. Dinner is a time to enjoy your meal with friends and family. Home cooking at its best, the Brick Oven Café delivers. Try the smothered chicken with onions, mushrooms, peppers, and cheese with a baked potato and salad for only $8.95. Grilled pork chops, New York strip, sirloin steak, jumbo fried shrimp, and even spaghetti with four meatballs will tempt your palette. Let’s listen to Bill Womack, who said, “Plant City needs a Brick House Café.”

A NIGHT DESTINED TO BE Destiny provided patrons at the Red Rose Inn and Suites with a night to be remembered. S t o ry by L i n d a L aw so n
Tiny, twinkling lights dance across the ceiling while long-stemmed red roses, lighted trees, and spotlights highlight couples swaying on the dance floor. The lovely ambiance, beautiful appointments, and fine cuisine of the Red Rose Dining Room make it Plant City’s crown jewel. Every detail has been well thought out and executed. Guests savor choices from a wide menu selection of succulent veal in wine sauce with capers and artichoke hearts, seafood and steaks cooked to order, rack of lamb, delicious sides, and decadent desserts. On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, dinner guests can enjoy a prime rib and seafood buffet with
all the trimmings. No matter the day or time, guests are treated to impeccable service from servers dressed in tuxedos giving attention to every detail and wish. The fabulous group, Destiny, performs its smooth vocals and music on Thursday and Friday evenings. Genesis Alvarez, Destiny’s female vocalist, belts out tunes such as “Dancing Queen” and “Ladies Night” while joining dancers on the dance floor with some moves of her own. She shows a softer side while singing “In the Arms of the Angels” and “If you’ve got leaving on your mind.” Dennis Hoag, guitarist, and continued on next page>

Bruce Farr, keyboardist, come from Lakeland and show their tremendous talents while playing and singing “Love me Tender” and “Little Liza
Jane.” Destiny’s sweet, smooth sound appeals to young and old with favorites from Elton John to country. Guest requests are happily fulfilled.
Dancing isn’t just for couples at the Red Rose. Groups of ladies danced to their hearts content. No date, no worries. Some of the favorite selections by Destiny were “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy,” “I’m Here for the Party,” and “Sailing Away to Key Largo.” A big screen TV is on hand for sports enthusiasts at the bar as they visit with friends and neighbors. The Red Rose is the perfect gathering place for family, co-workers, and friends. As Destiny played and sang, a large group of friends gathered to celebrate the retirement of their loved one and co-worker. A group at another table was celebrating a birthday. Two anniversaries were being celebrated as well. Couples sitting in booths talked quietly over a romantic dinner away from the hustle and bustle of the day. Easter at the elegant Red Rose Grand Ball Room was superb. An elegant meal pleased the many guests and the Easter Bunny delighted the children. The staff paid special atten-
tion to each child at a fun station made especially for them where they decorated cookies to their own liking. Mother’s Day, May 12, is a great time to take Mom and the entire family to the Red Rose Grand Ball Room to celebrate her special day. Owner/ Manager Mrs. Evelyn, along with the resident chef, has planned an awardwinning meal. Prime rib, glazed ham, endless fresh vegetables, soup, salad, a chocolate fountain, and desserts will be served in lovely surroundings with the finest service to impress the most deserving mother. Destiny’s smooth sounds will make the celebration even more memorable. Please make your reservation early in order to insure you give your mom the honor she deserves. It will be a day she’ll cherish and remember fondly for a very long time. To make reservations, please call Red Rose Inn and Suites at (813) 752-3141.

Art makes Edwin Ramos smile. And rightfully so, his paintings are good enough that people want to purchase them. Photo by Heather Davis
Breaking Down Barriers with Art Art Empowers People with Disabilities to Create the Life They Choose. Story by He ather Dav is
Edwin Ramos may appear to be quiet and reserved, but people who see his art can’t help but notice that it speaks volumes. When Ramos speaks of his art, his whole being beams with excitement and pride, along with a smile that stretches from ear to ear. Ramos is an active participant in the fine arts program at MacDonald Training Center at James Ranch in Plant City. The center currently serves more than 600 disabled individuals annually by providing a variety of day services, supported living, and supported employment services. Other life enrichment skills are also offered, such as computer training, personal fitness, nutrition, and instruction in fine arts. The arts program has evolved within the last several years from basic instruction to a full-scale fine
arts program under the direction of art instructor Jan Radovan. The program offers many opportunities, such as participation in numerous juried art shows, ongoing exhibitions at the University of South Florida, Teco Plaza, Tampa International Airport, and the county commissioners building in Tampa. Ongoing field trips to places such as the Ringling Museum of Art, the Salvador Dali Museum, and the St. Pete Fine Arts Museum are also part of the art education. Many of the artists, including Ramos, have had the opportunity to sell their paintings. Proceeds from the sales benefit the artists and MacDonald Training Center, giving the artists direct monetary benefits from their paintings. Some of the other advantages the fine arts program provides includes giving the artists a greater sense of confidence, recognition from

their peers and others, as well as encouragement of creativity, expression, and cultural learning. Ramos recently completed a painting that was exhibited and sold at the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery at the University of Tampa. His art will also be featured on the cover of the MacDonald Training Center’s annual report, as well as being included among other artists in a yearly calendar that is published by the center. When asked what he enjoys about
art, Ramos replied with a big smile, “When I do art, you get your mood out on paper; it puts me in a good mood.” Original artwork will be for sale locally at the Plant City Library during the month of May and at MacDonald Training Center’s location in Tampa. Promotional items from Fine Art Studios are available for purchase online through Café Press at www.cafepress. com/macdonaldcenter.
