LOCAL

Sometimes people take their blessings for granted. Some people cherish every one that comes their way. Recently, four lucky women appreciated the blessings they received from several local businesses that contributed to giving the women a day of pampering, and the staff at FOCUS was blessed enough to see the smiles on these women’s faces. They are the winners of this year’s Focus on You Makeover. Watch all the coverage of their day on thefocusmagazine.com.

BUSINESS FOCUS For anyone who is looking where to find a specific service or product, they should check out this section of the magazine. FOCUS profiled, in great depth, six local businesses with something amazing to offer.

SPOTLIGHT

They are doctors who heal people without medication or surgery. They are Drs. Garrison and Glenn. They spoke with FOCUS about their practice, and even shared some details about themselves outside their practice.

SPORTS

She is the only freshman cheerleader, who is a female, for the University of Florida. What is even more amazing is she didn’t cheer in youth football, like the majority of cheerleaders, as a child. So when you are watching the blue and orange next season, look out for Tarin Moses on the sidelines.

DINING

Just about everyone has eaten there, and just about everybody knows the name: Buddy Freddy’s. This longtime standing restaurant continues to serve up down-home cooking to the people of Plant City.

The letters came pouring in last month from caring individuals who nominated someone they knew for a free makeover. The notes entailed stories of hardworking, selfless women, and they reminded me of my mother. She worked full time when I was a child. My father did too for a while. That was until he suffered a pair of accidents. My mother was watching Saturday morning cartoons with me one morning when we heard, “Ruth! Aaron!” I heard it in is voice. I knew something was wrong. My father had slipped in the driveway, breaking his ankle into four pieces. He crawled into the house to call for help. Three days later, he fell in the kitchen while on his crutches. He tried to ease the impact of his fall with his arm, shattering his wrist worse than his ankle. He was fi xed to a bed for a long time, and I’ll never forget what he said to me as he lay there, “You have to take care of your mother.” She didn’t need anybody to take care of her. I helped out around the house, and I made my father breakfast every morning before school. You know, stuff like that. My mom, however, woke me up every morning and made sure I went to school. She worked all day and still found the time to cook dinner, take me to school events, and run a family business during nights and weekends. It is strong women like this that encouraged our readers to send in letters about extraordinary women for the annual Focus on You Makeover. You’ll be moved by the amazing things these women do on a daily basis, like putting other people first. It’s refreshing to read about people sacrificing their time for others, especially in today’s society where it seems like some people only care about themselves. So thanks to the businesses that spent some of their day giving back these ladies something special. FOCUS spotlights a chiropractic office – Caring Concepts, Inc. – that is dedicated to taking time to best serve the needs of its customers. Many businesses try to see how many customers they can get in and out of their doors. Caring Concepts, however, slows it down for one-on-one interaction. While you go through the magazine, take a moment and flip to our business section. Get to know some of your neighbors who own a business around here. Who knows, you might find something new in the area. Maybe one can make a difference in your day. By the way, my father is fine now. He is up on both feet with two good arms, working full time.

Laser Therapy for my Pet???

Visit our web site: www.feltonsmarket.com

Yes!! Laser therapy is a revolutionary breakthrough in the treatment and healing of a variety of injuries, wounds, fractures, neurological conditions, numerous dermatological problems and the pain associated with many of these conditions and arthritis. Your pet could certainly benefit from this revolutionary approach to modern Veterinary Medicine. Laser therapy is pain free, sterile, and drug free. You might be wondering, how could laser therapy help my pet? The answer is very simple. Laser therapy provides relief. As the laser is administered, your pet will relax and actually enjoy the treatment, much like you would enjoy receiving a massage. Blood circulation to the treatment area is increased along with the body’s own metabolism resulting in an anti-inflammatory reaction, relief from pain and an increase in the healing process. Laser therapy is the only course of treatment that actually stimulates the body to heal from within. Cats will usually begin to purr and most dogs relax enough that they fall asleep during the treatment. For more information on Laser Therapy and how it could benefit your pet, please talk to one of the staff or Dr. Conner at Animal Wellness Center at 813-752-2869.

Focus On You

Makeover By Sophia Hyde

As the FOCUS staff sat in the conference room reading the nomination letters, we could only mutually agree on one thing: It was going to be a tough decision. Some were even drawn to tears reading the letters, knowing only a select few could be chosen. It was a unanimous decision to award Judy Booth as a 2009 “Focus on You” Makeover winner. Over the past few years, she has taken care of her husband, who has overcome several heart attacks and prostate cancer. Eight months ago her youngest daughter was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and it has progressed rapidly. She now supports her husband, daughter and two grandchildren by working at Wal-Mart, where she has been for 17 years. Her daughter wrote in the nomination that through all of this, Judy never complains. For someone who gives so selflessly, FOCUS agreed that she deserved a day of pampering. The next winner chosen was Carmen Killian, nominated by Lorraine Bennett. Many people in the community may know Carmen because she is the vice president of the PTA at Shiloh Charter School, or because of her active roll at Plant City Church of God. However, this mother of two drives her husband to Moffitt Cancer Center nearly every day where he receives treatment for pituitary carcinoma, cancer in the pituitary gland of his brain. The doctors gave him a one-year prognosis, but if you ask Carmen about it, she believes much more in the faith and power of her God than what the doctors may say. For a woman who remains so strong for her family and the community, a day of pampering was well deserved.

For the first time in FOCUS makeover history, a mother and daughter won. Linda Mitchell nominated her mother Shirley Allen. Shirley takes care of her ill husband, who has almost died three times this year from pneumonia, as well as her 77-year-old mother. In February, Linda had a seizure and received 55 stitches in her forehead. Not only is she unable to drive for five months, but Linda, her husband, and their three children now live with Shirley as well. Shirley changed her work schedule so she could drive Linda to work every day in Lakeland. Shirley and Linda are the only two able to work in the home because Linda’s husband, Milo, has been laid off three times this year. Milo nominated his wife for the makeover, sharing stories of the strength she has shown in taking care of her family even after her seizure. In his letter, he wrote that Linda will often save her lunch money to give the children when they need extra money for field trips and other things. She is often found volunteering her time with the little league and giving back to everyone but herself. All of the people nominated were well deserving of the makeover, but only four could be chosen. When we called to inform the winners they had been chosen, each one shared their excitement and appreciation. However, Mrs. Judy’s was the most unique. We called her daughter first to let her know her nomination letter was chosen. She informed us that we should refrain from calling Mrs. Judy that day because they were at her mother’s funeral, and to wait until the next day. When we called and were able to reach her, she was the only one of the four who was not even informed she had been

nominated. She was completely caught off guard and began to cry, saying she had never won anything before in her life. The day before the makeover, when we arranged to do an interview with her for FocusTV, we were informed that a pipe had busted in her home and her entire trailer was flooded. We assured her that despite everything she had faced in the last week, on top of the last year’s events, tomorrow would be one of the best days of her lives. The morning began at Fred’s Southern Kitchen over breakfast where everyone became acquainted with each other. Then, it was off to the races as their eventful day began. Jarrett-Scott Ford and Sparkman’s Truck and Car Sales each donated a vehicle for the ladies to be chauffeured around in throughout the day. The first stop was Sister’s and Company. Devony Scott and Brigitte Hodge helped Carmen and Judy find the perfect outfits to accent their styles and personalities. Dillard’s at Westfield Brandon Mall donated 10 outfits for Linda and Shirley to mix and match to create their favorite outfit. After the shopping, the ladies headed off for spa relaxation. Meanwhile, Linda and Shirley’s outfits were whisked off to Linda Lawson at Sassy but Classy Accessories where she handpicked the perfect accents to their summer outfits. Shirley and Linda arrived at The Artistry and spent the rest of their morning receiving facials from Tonya Groninger and massages from Don Cawood and Leah Clark. Simultaneously, Sloan Short at The Place of Beauty treated Carmen and Judy to facials, while Terry Sutorus provided the luxury treatment of a one-hour massage for ultimate relaxation. All four ladies met up at BuddyFreddys for lunch. They unanimously agreed that after their muscles had been completely relaxed, a nap sounded most appealing. Following some delicious homemade chocolate cake with ice cream, the ladies returned for their afternoons of princess treatment. It was now time for the manicures and pedicures. Summer Pippin and Sloan spoiled Carmen and Judy at The Place of Beauty. A few miles down the road, mother and daughter Shirley and Linda were laughing and enjoying themselves while Lavonne Sapp and Linda Kickliter gave them beautiful nails with their choice of color.

The afternoon seemed to quickly be slipping away as each lady made her way to the shampoo bowl to begin the hairstyling. Brittany Hood at The Place of Beauty was able to convince Judy, whose hair went to the bottom of her back, to cut off 10 inches to donate to Locks of Love. She gave her a new shoulder-length style and strengthened the color in her hair. Catty-corner to Mrs. Judy, Summer was straightening Carmen’s hair, a look Carmen had not seen on herself in more than eight years. When Linda arrived to the makeover that morning, her hair was pulled tight into a ponytail, but Cindy Parmenter at The Artistry brought life back into her hair, and Linda confidently wore it down to show off her new cut and color. Just one row over, Ashley Showalter turned Shirley into a queen with a new color and style. She followed it up with full makeup that complimented her facial features and completed her new look. Nicole Neely helped Linda add her final touches to her new transformation by providing her makeup. While each girl was enjoying her afternoon, a special delivery arrived. Custom coffee drinks from The Daily Grind had been made for each girl, along with a goodie bag full of gourmet chocolates and desserts. Summer finished Carmen’s makeup, and Sloan helped Judy. With the makeovers all complete, each woman was rushed back to the cars to head home. They had just enough time to slide into their new clothes and accessories before the limo arrived to pick them up with their spouses. Around 7:30 p.m. the limo arrived at The Red Rose Inn and Suites. After getting photos taken, the ladies were greeted by Mrs. Evelyn Madonia, who provided the five-star dinner for the evening, while a live band brought life to the dance floor. Everything imaginable from the menu arrived on the table, from bruschetta and calamari to steak and frutti di mare. The experience far exceeded the ladies’ expectations. At the end, the women reflected on their day. Each one showed their grateful appreciation, and all commented that they felt like princesses. Tears rolled down Linda’s cheeks when she shared how much her heart had been touched that someone cared enough about her to give her such a special gift. No words can fully describe what this day meant to these women, nor can the pictures fully capture what they experienced.

AFTER

Sloan Short provided facials for both Carmen and Judy, as well as Carmen’s mani/pedi and Judy’s makeup.

Terry Sutorus was one of the licensed massage therapists who donated their services that day.

Ashley Showalter at The Artistry did Shirley’s hair and makeup.

Working for her dream S t o r y by P h i l N e a r y

Macaley Barrow shows some of the medals she has won competing in gymnastics. Photo by Tammy Simpson

Macaley Barrow wakes up at 7:30 a.m. every weekday to get ready for school. She attends Turkey Creek Middle School in Plant City, where class starts at 9 a.m. On the weekends, she hangs out with friends, goes to the movies, the mall, and birthday parties. In other words, she lives a normal life for a 13-year-old. But Macaley has a special talent. It all started when she tried to do a back flip off of her bed on to the floor. She landed awkwardly and when she fell to the floor, her knees hit her eyes, bruising them both. Somehow, she still wanted to do a back flip. “She would always watch [gymnastics] on TV and figured she’d

try to do a back flip,” said Macaley’s mom, Connie. “After that, I figured I better do it the right way and let her learn how to do it.” Macaley has devoted herself to the sport of gymnastics ever since. She trains at Orlando Metro Gym, a facility regarded as one of the premier gymnastics training facilities in the country, producing ’96 Olympian Shane de Freitas and ’07 World Champion Team member Shayla Worley. For six hours each weekday, Macaley pushes herself to the limit, trying to perfect herself in every aspect of the sport. “It becomes a way of life,” said

local continueD from PaGe 22 Jeff Wood, her coach and owner of Orlando Metro. “I know few adults that can keep the schedule they do. It requires a lot of discipline.” Macaley has to leave school early just to make it to her 2 p.m. practice on time. She trains until 8, rides back, does her homework in the car, grabs a bite to eat, takes a shower, and goes to bed. Between commuting and practice, her mother said, her total workweek is approximately 40 hours. Th at’s not even including the classes she attends in the morning. “It’s like a full-time job,” Connie said. But Macaley doesn’t see it that way. She sees it as an opportunity to pursue her dreams. “I want to keep doing it until college and maybe make the Olympics,” Macaley said. She took a giant step in April’s USA

Gymnastics regional competition. Held in Atlanta, the competition consisted of level 8 representatives – level 10 and then elite are the two highest classes – from eight southeastern states. Each level 8 representative received an invite based on their performances in state tournaments. Macaley qualified during states, then placed fi rst on bars, fi rst on floors, fi rst on vault, second on beam, and fi rst all-around in Atlanta. “It was a pretty cool experience,” Macaley said. “It’s something I can remember for a long time. I know I can do better on beams, though.” In other words, being the secondbest in one category out of eight states wasn’t good enough. Talk about dedication. “You can’t teach that,” Wood said. “Some kids are just happy to be competing. She wants to be the one.”

Currently, she trains as a level 9 gymnast, two steps below the highest possible training class, which is the elite level. Wood said Macaley’s commitment could ultimately get her there. “If someone doesn’t want to do it and they’re still getting through it, it’s a very tough sport,” Wood said. “Imagine someone with all kinds of athletic ability competing in something they love to do. Th at’s what we want, someone who is 110 percent committed.” One day, during their daily trip to Orlando, her mom wanted to turn around because of traffic and inclement weather, but the thought of missing practice didn’t sit well with Macaley. “I was like ‘we’ll just turn around and miss today’ because the interstate was backed up and it was storming like crazy,” Connie said.

“She started balling and was like ‘I don’t want to miss practice,’ so I was like ‘OK let’s go.’” Her determination and hard work doesn’t sit squarely with gymnastics. Macaley is a straight-A student and a member of the National Honors Society at Turkey Creek. She also participated in yearly hog sales at the Florida Strawberry Festival, in which she and her family would drive to Georgia to buy a hog, train it, present it, and wait for an offer. But for now, gymnastics is her way of life. “The day she fl ipped off her bed, she’s been dedicated ever since,” Connie said. “She loves the sport.” At 13, she’s a typical teen, one who is chasing her dream.

Plant City’s downtown coffee destination, better known as the Daily Grind and News, played host to its ceremonial ribbon cutting on the morning of May 21. The celebration was enjoyed by all who attended, which included an array of Plant City Chamber of Commerce ambassadors, as well as the staff of FOCUS magazine. The café staff provided a delicious array of food and drinks for sampling, including chicken salad wraps, brownies, lemon bars, biscotti, cookies, flavored tea, and coffee. Owners Mike and DeDe Floyd happily entertained guests and took photos to commemorate the event. Attendees mingled among the familiar community faces while snacking on the goodies provided. At the conclusion of the event, DeDe said, “All of the sweat and tears you

pour into a project like this, that really becomes like a child to you. It truly pays off when you see the people in your community embracing your hard work with appreciation.” The Daily Grind and News has truly undergone a magnificent transformation since opening its doors, from the now-extensive gourmet menu to the beautifully remodeled interior adorned with charming old, black-and-white photos and a wide assortment of retail teas and coffees. Regulars at the café can be found in their respective spots each morning enjoying their daily paper and cup of joe, while conversing with the friendly staff behind the counter. It is truly becoming a part of Plant City tradition that will continue to provide a comfortable refuge for residents in years to come.

Fantasy lives at One Raider Place S to r y by L a u r a Es t e s

The excitement in the air was palpable on May 21, as Plant City High School’s cosmetology program celebrated the fifth annual Fantasy Contest where students of all levels compete by converting models into their interpretations of fantasy. Instructor Lynn Connor says the purpose of the contest is to “encourage artistic creativity.” Connor, honored as the Hillsborough County 2009 Outstanding Adult Educator of the Year, is the lead instructor of

this cosmetology program. Students graduate prepared to sit for the state board cosmetology exam. Once licensed, graduates are able to work with hair, nails, skincare, and makeup. Students of all levels are encouraged to participate in the Fantasy Contest, which incorporates all of the skills they have studied and practiced while working in the school salon called Salon at One Raider Place, which is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 3:30 p.m. – 7 p.m.

june 2009 thefocusmagazine.com

On Fantasy Contest night, 22 students worked on their models for several hours before judging took place at 7 p.m. Local cosmetology professionals served as judges, including two graduates, Connor’s former students. Connor said, “The judging criteria were total look, level of difficulty, originality/creativity makeup application, skill level executed.” The winners were awarded “cosmocash,” which Connor explained as money that would purchase professional products from an in-class store. Melissa McManus, a student who is scheduled to graduate in December, transformed her friend, Jessica Freeman , into a mermaid caught turning into a woman. As she applied makeup to Freeman’s legs, McManus was excited both to see how her design would look and to see what other students were creating. This was the first entry into the contest for McManus and her fellow student, Terri Carroll, who is working on her second semester. Carroll was inspired by what she called her “Great American Son to turn him into a Great American Indian.” Her son, Jeremy, was patient and supportive as Carroll pinned feathers into

his mohawk and painted his face and torso. Carroll proudly won fifth place in the evening’s contest. Monica Hansen, a model, said she was “really proud of [her friend], Kirsten Ritenbaugh, for all of the work she put into creating her fantasy.” Ritenbaugh, who started the program in January, adorned her model with all of the trappings of a beautiful gift. Her fantasy was to create a giant human gift and Hansen was picture perfect as a beautifully wrapped present, from head to toe. Ritenbaugh’s creativity and weeks of preparation paid off as she won first place for her design. The second-place winner was Julie Meier, who created a parrot design. Third-place winner, Jonathon Chapple, transformed his model, Alicia Hernandez, into what he titled “The Black Dahlia Murder.” Chapple used fantasy makeup to create a beautiful and disturbing image. The fourthplace winner was Crystal Butler, who created a human zebra. All of the participants created gorgeous fantasies on their models, showcasing the techniques they have learned, making their teacher proud.

The committee works hard to come up with auction items that are unique, and the tickets to see the Blue Man Group fetched good money. When the auction was finished, guests moved to an adjacent field for a new event this year: the Frisbee Flip. Contestants paid $25 for three attempts to throw a Frisbee into a small, kiddy pool a few yards away. It was entertaining. It’s amazing how something that looks so simple can be such a challenge. Memorial Day worker S to r y by K r y s t e l K n o w l e s

Nancy River has been working at CVS for more than three years. She is currently a pharmacy technician who enjoys her job, loves to see her customers, and takes pleasure in working on Memorial Day. Rivera said she enjoys working on

the holiday because she gets to see the “specials,” who are the people she holds close to her heart. “For me, the special people are the ones who served our country and it’s a blessing to get to see them,” said Rivera. “Today is a good day to

remember the people who defended our country and relax.” One of Rivera’s favorite customers is Ledley Pete McNab. He served in the U.S Navy Reserve and is very nice and friendly. Another aspect Rivera enjoys about her job is her co-workers, because they spend a lot of time together and have fun. “My co-workers are the two best ladies in the world,” Rivera said.

The people with whom Rivera encounters every day make her job enjoyable. She will never forget one lady who pulled up to the drive-thru pharmacy and tried to cash a check because she thought it was a bank. “When we told the lady it wasn’t a bank she was so embarrassed, but it was funny,” said Rivera. “Every day is a great day because we enjoy being here and enjoy the customers.”

local focus this year’s Leadership class was City Commissioner and Vice Mayor Dan Raulerson. We learned that Mayor Rick Lott was going to be out of town during one of the city commission meetings, which meant that Raulerson would be responsible for leading the meeting in Lott’s absence. Since attending a city commission meeting is a requirement of the class, we surprised Raulerson by attending together as a group, complete with our Leadership Plant City shirts. Following the completion of the Leadership class, the chamber and Leadership alumni evaluated the previous year’s class to discuss ways to improve – everything from the timing of the breaks through the day, to the value of each day’s schedule. SHARE SOME ABOUT AFTER THE AUTO ACCIDENT…

Cars – and the people in them – are likely to suffer real damage in a collision. The automobile has been designed to withstand low-impact collisions, but the passengers have not. So at the low speeds most common in rear-end accidents, it’s the humans who suffer. Bigger accidents – and they happen – mean bigger injuries. It’s no surprise that the auto accidents bring more patients to the Doctor of Chiropractic than any other single cause. The most common complaint after a rear-end collision is whiplash, caused as the head is thrown forward, backward and forward again at the moment of impact. Seat belts and air bags, used properly, have cut down on many of the injuries we used to see, but patients still complain of back pain and other aches. Smart move: see the Doctor of Chiropractic promptly for the hands on treatment designed to realign spinal segments, freeing the pathways of nerve flow to help the body heal itself. Special Note: On June 21, Thank you to all the Fathers, Grandfathers and Godly men. May God continue to Bless you, Happy Father’s Day! On July 4th please join with us to continue to pray for our country. Dr. Dukes and Staff

Saving lives S to r y by a a r o n o b e r l i n

It is a child killer, one that claims thousands of youths’ lives every year. But with the knowledge of one lifesaving skill, a child can avoid becoming a statistic. Behind Ruby-Jean Redman’s house, a family has been teaching children how to swim for a little more than 20 years, equipping them with the skills they need to keep from drowning in a pool. The tactics they use continue to produce swimmers in less than a week, creating a buzz about the program that has spread by word of mouth throughout the town. “They’ve been doing swimming

lessons in this area for years, and everybody thinks highly them,” said Mindy Combee, owner of A Family Childcare Home, who brought one of her daycare classes for private lessons. “My daughter came here last year, and some kids from my day care came here last year. So I spoke to all my daycare parents, and they all agreed to schedule a couple of weeks for lessons this summer.” So far, approximately 60 children are enrolled for weeklong lessons in the family’s pool this summer. It is there where Katie and Bud Bowden and Jeanne Knotts – sometimes

Redman fi lls in – instruct children no younger than 2 years old the techniques necessary to jump off a diving board, swim to the other side of a pool, and then get out. The results put smiles on parents’ faces, ones that might not have necessarily been there when they first showed for classes. It is common for some children to cry, and some parents struggle to see their little ones crying. “I tell the parents that at first they’ll cry for a day or two. But by Wednesday, the crying will stop,” said Knotts. “We do have some parents who will say, ‘I just can’t take it.’” “We don’t coddle them,” said Redman. “Is it better to cry a little now or forever after your child drowns?” The three instructors are accomplished swimmers. Knotts went to states for swimming backstroke during her days at Plant City High School. Bud coached at PCHS, and Katie swam freestyle for Durant High School and went on to swim for the University of Nebraska on a

swimming scholarship. But it wasn’t always these three teaching the lessons. At one point, the three Redman girls – now Knotts, Pam Bowden, and Susan Sullivan – taught the lessons. Sullivan worked for the YMCA as a swimming instructor until she got married. It was her summer job. She was a schoolteacher, but she had summers off. The Y wanted her to work weekends, but she wanted to spend time with her family, so she decided to give lessons in the backyard. Bowden was also employed in the school system, but the two women are now principals – Bowden at PCHS, Sullivan at Tomlin Middle School – and do not get to take the summers off. Anyone who is interested in a weeklong swim lesson can call Knotts at (813) 752-1405 or the Bowdens at (813) 754-5318. An extremely good time Money raised at Cork Elementary’s after school party will go back into the school. S to r y by L a u r a Es t e s

A little rain couldn’t dampen the community spirit on a recent Friday night as Cork Elementary School celebrated its Xtreme Fun Night on May 15. It was an extremely good time, with 300 – 400 people attending. The event was sponsored by the PTA as “one of two annual fundraisers,” according to PTA president Jessica Bazley. The carnival atmosphere was complete with food, games, and music. Teachers manned booths where kids and parents could play games and win prizes. The dunk tank was a special success as Principal Melody

Murphy, Bazley, and several teachers took turns being dunked. Bazley is especially proud that they raised more than $800 from the dunk tank, money that is earmarked to pay for a covered playground, which would have come in handy during the rainy Xtreme Fun Night. Luckily, the rain came just as the Cougar and Cub Chorus concert started inside and by the time the concert ended, the sun had returned so it was back to the fun. And for some, the rain seemed to add to the good times. Bazley said, “The bounce houses

were wet and the kids thought they were even better.” The evening was a resounding success, raising funds for the school and providing plenty of fun. Most important to Bazley and the PTA team responsible for the event is the extraordinary amount of support they received from local merchants.

Bazley said, “We are so grateful for community donations.” With so much support from families and local merchants like Fred’s Market, Chris Welbon Karate Clubs, and Mercer Farms – just to name a few – it is no surprise that the Xtreme Fun Night was such a great time.

Kids of Courage S to r y by C h e r y l J o h n s to n

With over-the-top anticipation, grins, and giddy giggles, the courageous students in the Exceptional Student Program at Turkey Creek Middle School look forward to celebrations and recognition as much as anyone. May is their special time to shine. Thirty-nine youngsters in grades six through eight were thrilled to be honored at the TCMS ninth annual ESE Awards Banquet. Eleven of those will move on to high school in August. The entire staff celebrates this milestone worth marking. Scott Anderson, a retired former county administrator, noticed a need during his tenure working with ESE students. All in the program have mental limitations and many have physical ones, too. With the help of wonderful teachers and the students’ own determination, these children learn despite their handicaps. Anderson feels recognition for their accomplishments is well deserved. work and great attitudes. Parents and ESE staffers beamed with pride as the following eighth-graders were recognized for accomplishments that deem them ready for ninth: James Alexander, Dakota Caldwell, Alexander Carter, Joseph Taylor Cox, Kevin Garcia, Satteria George, Austin Harper, Hannah Killebrew, Kennedy McIntosh, Naudencio Rosales, and Jenna Woods. The Hillsborough County School District provides extensive services for special needs students with physical disabilities and learning disorders. This recognition ceremony for ESE students at TCMS is the only one of its kind in the county. Since 2000, Anderson has recruited help from area businesses and private individuals, who contribute funds, giveaways, and moral support. Each year the program’s growing “Special Thank You” list credits contributors. Many local restaurants generously donate a meal out for the graduates and their families. This perfect reward benefits those who struggle to learn and overcome adversities that most can only imagine. This year, ABC Pizza, First Choice BBQ , Fred’s Market Restaurant, Papa John’s Pizza,

Pizza Hut, Red Rose Inn, and Whistle Stop Café offered complimentary dinners. Mayo credits Anderson for duty above and beyond the call as a volunteer/partner, saying, “His commitment and love of our students allows us to continue this long-standing tradition of honoring TCMS students headed to high school.” Buddy Coleman, ESE Team Leader, appreciates the supportive staff’s role in helping these special learners. “Every student is recognized for an accomplishment, but our eighth-grade students are the stars of the day. The boys wear boutonnieres and the girls receive flower bouquets provided by Wal-Mart. All receive trophies, four Twistie Treat gift certificates, and a photo-op with the Strawberry Festival Queen. She always makes them feel like royalty.” On this recent day in May, the exceptional needs students celebrated their time in the spotlight, unencumbered by physical disabilities or learning limitations. They inspired, persevered, and enjoyed a party they’ll remember with pride. On this day, their joy mattered most.

participation to make the graduation and banquet a reality. Principal Dennis Mayo welcomed students, staff, supporters, and families to the May 20 event before Anderson introduced guest speakers Stacey Hackerman and Lauren Der. Both young women have a heart for the ESE program. Hackerman is the current chapter president for Best Buddies and Der, the reigning Strawberry Festival Queen, was active in the PCHS chapter. The Courier Plant City’s Hometown Newspaper 1884 - ? Part One–This story will be ongoing over the next several months. S u b m i t t e d by P l a n t C i t y P h o to A r c h i v e s

September 12, 1884, before there was a town called Plant City, the first issue came off the press. Captain Francis William Merrin, owner, publisher, and editor, called it the South Florida Courier. Captain Francis William Merrin had served in the Confederate Army in the Mississippi Artillery, Company L, and after the war he wanted to resume his printing business and began looking to Florida. With help from his sons, Merrin moved his printing equipment from Mississippi to Plant City – by rail, by steamer, and by horse-drawn cart. The new printing plant was operational by September 1884. The South Florida Courier was an immediate hit, and area leaders relied on Merrin’s newspaper. In late 1884, the

notice of referendum to incorporate Plant City was published in the South Florida Courier. Merrin promoted this cause and the incorporation of the town of Plant City was approved by a vote of 49 to one. Plant City was born Jan. 10, 1885. You could read about it in The Courier. Through his editorial writing, Merrin continued to promote Plant City and its diligent hardworking residents. He continued to describe it as a prosperous and thriving town. And it was in the South Florida Courier in 1889 that the announcement was made that the yellow fever epidemic of 1887-88 was over, and Plant City was free of the disease. After Merrin died, in 1900, his son, Philander “Lanny” Allen (“P. A.”) Merrin, became owner, publisher,

and editor of The Courier. Although the change of the paper’s name is not certain, from about 1900 on it was most often referred to as The Courier, and also as The Plant City Courier. Sometimes they were interchanged. Philander Merrin ran the paper until 1906, when he sold it. About this time William Frank Merrin, also a son of Captain Merrin, returned to Plant City after an absence of 18 years and leased the newspaper from its new owners. William F. Merrin published The Courier for about one year. He later established his own printing shop – Merrin Printing. John A. Barns, son of Dr. Augustus Mitchell Barns, the first dentist in Plant City, bought the paper along with several other investors. They hired R. R. Tomlin, an outstanding newspaper man, to be editor. Under Tomlin there was no change in policy, and The Courier continued to promote the town of Plant City. Tomlin was

later elected to the Florida House of Representatives. After the other investors sold to Barns, he became sole owner of The Courier. John A. Barns had many business interests and decided to sell the paper. In 1910, Wayne Thomas, a 21-year-old man from Bartow, purchased the paper from Barns. At this time the operations were located on the second floor of the Herring Drug Store on South Collins Street. Wayne Thomas had only owned the newspaper a short time when, in July 1910, an early morning fire ravaged the newspaper plant and the new presses and equipment were heavily damaged – and all early copies of The Courier, some dating to 1884, were lost. GREATER PLANT CITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE S u b m i t t e d by B r uc e R o d w e l l

A tip of the chamber hat and kudos to George Banning on receiving Rotary International’s highest and most prestigious “Service above Self ” award. Only 100 of these awards are given out worldwide. To receive the award, a person’s dedication and work for Rotary and to the interests that Rotary supports is unparalleled. This award is not just awarded on what one has done for Rotary, but also how the recipient has been involved in their community. The award was presented to Mr. Banning during the District Conference of Rotary International by Karen Wrentz, a representative of the International President D.K. Lee. Banning has been active in Rotary for more than 34 years – first in Ohio, then Orlando, and now in Plant City. He has been active in the Group Study Exchange for several years, both hosting teams and in leading one to Finland. Banning also led a team on a 7,000-mile trek with an iron lung to promote and raise money for Polio Plus, a program to irradiate polio from the world. Banning has also been a member of the YMCA, both in Columbus, Ohio, and here in Plant City. Beyond the unique walking gait, which only Paso Finos can do, the horse is capable of executing other gaits that are natural to horses, including the relaxed walk, canter, and

The Paso Fino breed is truly unique and the PFHA plays an important role in the world of horses. Plant City is enriched by the association’s presence here.

A CARING CONCEPT

52

june 2009 thefocusmagazine.com

On Baker Street, in the heart of Plant City, lies a chiropractic office with an amiable staff. Two doctors, William Garrison and Todd Glenn, are at the helm. They spoke about their practice, and what makes it so special.

FOCUS: Can you tell us a little about your business?

modalities that are effective with pain management and healing.

Garrison: Our philosophy of caring for people FIRST began with the practice founder, Dr. Victor Kohlmeier in the 1950’s. We are happy to report he still comes in the clinic twice a week. Caring Concepts was established in 1990. We are located at 1215 W Baker Street, just several blocks from downtown Plant City. I am starting my third year of practice; Dr. Glenn has been in practice for 19 years. We work quite well together in my opinion. He might have another one [laughing].

FOCUS: How do patients benefit from your care?

FOCUS: What did you do before you started at the practice? Garrison: I graduated from Florida Southern College in Lakeland, then on to Palmer College of Chiropractic. Once I completed my training at Palmer I came back to Plant City to live and work. FOCUS: I’ve heard some rumors that you used to play baseball? Garrison: It’s true [laughing]. I played minor league baseball for four years after graduating from Florida Southern. I like to add some of that experience into my treatment techniques. I can speak on a personal level with some of our athletes that come in. It helps when treating certain patients. I had a great time playing baseball, and wouldn’t trade the time I spent traveling around Canada and the U.S. FOCUS: Explain the alternative health care you can provide. Glenn: If you would rather not take medication for your problem, we can help by increasing the range of motions of joints and help sprain strains to repair themselves. We have had excellent results with our decompression traction table to help heal herniated or bulging disks in the neck or the back. If you do not want manipulation, we do a variety of different techniques and work to find the one that is most effective for you. We also offer multiple physiotherapy

Glenn: We’ve helped people with many different conditions including: neck and back pain, migraine headaches, muscle tension headaches, sciatic pain, neuritis, fibromyalgia, auto and work injuries. From the simplest to the most complicated, if we can’t help them then we will refer them to someone who we believe can. Garrison: I think that’s a good point that Dr. Glenn made. As far as treating patients, you have to know when that limit is, when you can help somebody and when you can’t. It’s not just about chiropractic care; it’s more about the patient’s needs. Our approach is conservative care first. We’re not close-minded when it comes to sending patients to other medical providers. I think it goes both ways. We receive referrals each week from other doctors.

FOCUS: At Caring Concepts, you also offer nutritional counseling. Can you tell us what you offer in that regard? Glenn: With certain conditions it’s appropriate, instead of just recommending a vitamin, to determine with testing the nutritional deficiencies and find the exact problem. You may have deficiencies or too much of a certain mineral in your body that can be helpful or detrimental. We want to correct those. We use lab analysis to determine your needs. FOCUS: So let me make sure I understand you correctly. If I come to you, you will analyze me specifically and then supplement through vitamins and minerals my personal needs? Garrison: Basically, yes. If you request, we order certain lab tests that provides us with a detailed report. We supplement from there. There are a large array of vitamins that everyone is trying to take, like fish oil and other good things. If you want something

very patient specific, that’s where we come in. In my opinion, that’s the best way to do it. We also believe that the patient should choose their comfort level regarding nutritional supplements, so there is never any pressure from us to follow any program they are not committed to. FOCUS: What made you decide you want to be chiropractor?

Glenn: I hurt my back once upon a time. I saw a chiropractor, and he really helped me. I liked the profession and decided I wanted to help other people. Garrison: I have been around Chiropractic all my life. Dr. Kohlmeier has been one of my role models since I was a child. I have been treated with chiropractic for sports injuries and auto accident injuries. I foCUS Magazine Plant City june 2009

Performing a civic duty In a time when small businesses are struggling to survive and good ole mom-and-pops stores are doing everything in their power to outweigh the competition, local chiropractor Dr. William Garrison can sleep soundly, knowing that he has stopped a professional scam artist from conning his community out of more than $150,000 in hardearned profits. Garrison’s day at his practice, Caring Concepts, started like any other, but quickly turned into an extraordinary sequence of events that garnered him community accolades and media recognition. A gentleman claiming to work for an AM sports radio talk show called Garrison’s office offering a spectacular advertising package. The man claimed to be interested in having Garrison on the show due to the doctor’s extensive background in sports. In addition, the man said they would hold an event in Caring Concepts with a few players from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in attendance. With a bargain price of $2,500, the deal seemed too good to Garrison to be true – which turned out to be the case. The mystery man insisted that if the doctor wanted the package, they would have to move quickly on the offer. Garrison told the man that he was going to lunch with his partner and would call him back after discussing the situation more thoroughly. The red flag was raised even higher when the overeager salesman persisted by calling the doctor four times before he had the chance to leave for his lunch. After a quick search on Ripoffreport.com, Garrison learned that the man with whom he had spoken was known all over as a notorious scam artist in counties all across Florida. In turn, the doctor called his brother, a detective with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and planned to capture the conman. Garrison then called the fake disc jockey back and invited him to lunch at the Red Rose Dining Room to further discuss the advertising deal. Little did the deceptive deejay know Garrison was wired. The two discussed business and Garrison followed the H.C.S.O.’s instructions to a T in order to secure the suspect’s guilt. Upon leaving the Red Rose, the man was immediately arrested. He had appointments scheduled that day with other Plant City businesses ready to pay him in full.

have personally had great results with chiropractic care. I always knew I was going to do one of a couple things. I pursued the baseball career, and then entered a profession where I could help people every day. FOCUS: What separates Caring Concepts from other practices? Glenn: We are very honest with our patients. We don’t have a problem telling them what’s wrong with them and if we can help them or not. That’s not exactly a standard across the board. Our philosophy is that EVERY patient is important and treated with respect. We also have a terrific staff that keeps us on track, and our patient’s love them! Garrison: The first thing is ethics in treating the patients. We also have diversity in our education and experience. We both feel that our education at Palmer Chiropractic College was exceptional. Dr. Glenn has completed 300 additional hours in chiropractic orthopedics. I have completed 270 additional hours in chiropractic neurology. The two of us working together allows us to consult with each other on how to effectively treat our patients. We don’t hesitate to consult with other healthcare professionals as well. FOCUS: Why did you choose Plant City for your practice, and what do you love about our town? Glenn: Plant City reminds me of a small town that my family comes from in Iowa. I just like the friendliness, the people, and the involvement of the community. Garrison: I grew up in Plant City, and graduated from Plant City High School. I’m involved in Rotary Club and we do a lot of community service. Between family, the practice, sports and Rotary, I stay quite busy. I love practicing in this community where I have so many friends and family. FOCUS: In the coming years, what do you see as the future of Caring Concepts?

Garrison: At this point in time we have three doctors. Dr. Kohlmeier does acupuncture in the clinic two days a week. At some point in time, we would like to expand at our current building, or move into a larger location nearby. We already have two licensed massage therapists, Nikki Jackson and Shannon Aguilar, who are both very skilled. We also have on-site X-rays and are looking to add other services. Recently, we’ve been attending specialty classes on whiplash injuries and brain trauma. There’s up to three million whiplash injuries per year. We are Dr. Glenn performs a gentle adjustment. BACKSTREET BLUES CATERING Bringing food to you When you cross the open stretch of land that hosts Ed Lyons; 40-foot gourmet kitchen on wheels, the aroma that wafts through the air is just as intoxicating as it is intriguing. What is this gargantuan fixture and why has it been hiding from my taste buds for so long? Thankfully for hungry Plant City residents, Backstreet Blues Catering isn’t leaving town any time soon. With a patron promise of “food straight from the kitchen to your table,” it’s easy to see why Backstreet Blues Catering has gained the popularity of a prom queen in the seven short years it has been open. Owner and head chef Ed Lyons brings an extensive background to the table, having served as a former Navy White House chef for presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush. Ed’s award-winning cuisine is now being enjoyed in communities all around the Tampa Bay area, which makes him happier than ever. “No matter who your clientele is, it’s important to remember that they’re all everyday people that love good food,” Ed says, while comparing his White House experience to the present. Ed hopes that with a little time and persistence, his business will fill the vacant spot of a premier caterer for the Plant City area. Although widely known for its award-winning barbecue, the business boasts a menu that is truly diversified to please even the most selective of palates. Whether it’s a wedding in need of extravagant seafood spread or a graduation party fit for grilling burgers and steaks, Ed and his staff are ready to accommodate. Vegetarians and those of us who still rely on year-round dieting can rest assured that Ed has plenty of meatless options available as well as healthy choices to make each event perfect for all who attend. Ed enjoys cooking with local ingredients from a variety of stores, such as Farmer’s Market, to keep

56

the food’s quality as high as possible. Ed also strives to buy organic foods whenever possible, but it’s a challenge when prices are always rising for “green” goods. But when it comes to environmentalism, Ed and the crew at Backstreet Blues have found plenty of other ways to go green. Not only does the business use biodiesel in their trucks, but all of the cooking oil they used is recycled and the cups, plates, and silverware they provide for catered events are all biodegradable.

They even have a compost pile that is used for all old food. While many businesses have been forced to cut back on their environmental efforts in these economic times, it seems as if Ed and his staff are putting forth even more effort to waste less and reuse more. The larger-than-life kitchen on wheels proves to be an absolutely perfect method for catering. Throughout Ed’s many years in the business, it has become apparent

that most caterers have to make the food, transport it to the event, and then reheat it on-site, which makes for a large window of opportunity for something to go wrong, as well as the quality of food diminishing. At Backstreet Blues, all prep work and cooking is done right from the kitchen and brought straight to the tables. The business caters a wide variety of events including weddings, Spanish and tapas events, graduation parties, corporate events, political parties,

tailgates, and many more. Overall, if there is a reason to celebrate, they can accommodate. Personalized menus and cooking classes are also offered by Ed and his crew. Backstreet Blues also enjoys working with the community for events dealing with churches, youth groups, and other local organizations working for a good cause. Ed and his staff attend the events and sell their food, and in turn, give up to 20 percent of the proceeds back to

the event or charity. Ed’s favorite events to work are the more personal celebrations such as “kid’s moving out” or graduation parties. The staff also enjoys company picnics because of the laid-back atmosphere. As previously stated, barbecue is the group’s specialty, which is evident in the many awards they have won, including first place for pulled pork, chicken, beef brisket, and ribs. The group has received more than 15 People’s Choice Awards, an even

greater honor. Ed and his staff enjoy working the local Pig Jam celebration every year, where they can delve into the community and share their love of cooking with the people that make it possible for the business to exist. Ed says he enjoys the general aspects of the job. “My job is to entertain and cook…which I was born to do. But toward the end of the event when the people actually stop what they’re doing to come up to you and say ‘Hey, that was some fantastic

food’…that’s the best reward of all.” While Ed refers to the service industry as “somewhat of a thankless position,” it’s nice to be appreciated by those people that you put your heart and soul into serving. Karate is used as exercise and family time for us, while helping build our self-confidence. Whether you are looking for a way to change up your usual routine or an outlet to keep your kid entertained over the summer, Chris Welbon Karate Clubs can satisfy even the least athletic appetite in the bunch. Chris himself was tossed into the world of martial arts at the early age of 8 under the strict orders of his mother with hopes of instilling discipline in the young boy. Thankfully, that fateful move inspired Chris to begin a lifetime of dedication to the arts, leading him to begin teaching only 8 short years later. Now he is grown and married with two daughters of his own. His 6-yearold daughter, Olivia, participates in

developed a permanent home for his students in the club’s current building on Collins Street. Chris maintains that “we did not pick Plant City, Plant City picked us. Our program has been most successful (here) because of the strong Christian and family values that Plant City holds true, as these are the same values that we strive for here at CWKC as well.” Chris has a great staff of assistant instructors who dedicate themselves to giving back to the club. He and his staff are no strangers when it comes to getting involved in the Plant City community. The group’s active Booster Club works in conjunction with local businesses to coordinate

classes every so often and takes part in his summer karate camps. Chris maintains that “she is very involved in school and other activities right now, and I encourage her to do what she is passionate about.” A Florida native, Chris grew up in Brandon and moved to Dade City after marrying his wife Carmen in 1997. After establishing a class at the South Florida Baptist Hospital and Hope Lutheran Church, it was obvious after a short while that with the limited amount of space at hand, the group would need to relocate quickly. variety of classes for individuals of all ages, including a traditional weapons program and stranger awareness training. One of the group’s biggest claims to fame is its National Tournament Team, which includes pupils from age 5 to 51. This means that the team qualified within the Amateur Athletic Union’s (AAU) Karate Program on the local, state, and regional levels in order to make it to the national event. This year, the ceremony will be held in Florida with participants from all over the United States (including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico) in attendance. This is a very high honor for the group to uphold and the community is very

proud to have such gifted students participating for the title. A wise individual once said, “Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” This quotation rings true for Chris Welbon every day. The best feeling that Chris gets from his work is “when I see the improvement that training at our dojo has made in people’s lives.” Both his adult and children students remind him daily that karate has made a positive difference in their lives.

Dental Associates of Central florida

1702 Walden Village CT. Plant City, FL 33566 (813) 719-2222

Leaving lasting smiles on the people of Plant City. No one forgets first impressions, and a person’s appearance is a major factor of how he or she is perceived. A nice smile and good teeth can have a profound effect on someone’s looks, and the dentists at Dental Associates of Central Florida understand that. “Socially, your teeth are important,” said Dr. Trey Mueller, one of three dentists at Dental Associates of Central Florida. “It is nice to be able to give people confidence with nice teeth. For some guys, no matter how attractive a lady

is, if she has rotten teeth, then she unfortunately doesn’t have the same appeal.” The practice has all the capabilities for someone seeking dental care needs. With the most modern and state-of-the-art equipment at the office, along with services that no other practice in Plant City offers, it is like a “one-stop shop” for dental services, said Dr. Mueller. Dental Associates of Central Florida opened its doors in Plant City this year in April. Since then, the staff has had the pleasure of treating

a wide array of clientele, ranging from children to senior citizens. “I got a call from Marion Smith, who owns this building,” said Dr. Mueller. “She said she had an office sitting empty filled with equipment. They were state of the art. So I put an offer in, and I bought it.” Now, it is nothing but smiles walking in and out the doors of the Walden Lake office. That is because Dental Associates of Central Florida is focused on customer service. Dr. Mueller said he is lucky because it is difficult to find good staff for a dental

office, but “we have them here.” With a genuine concern for their patients, the staff at the practice continues to make their customers feel at home. And home is what Plant City feels like to the dentists. Drs. Trey Walding and John Carter each have decades of experience practicing in central Florida. As a matter of fact, Dr. Mueller grew up in Plant City and graduated from Plant City High School – he was voted Mr. Plant City High School his senior year. His mother, Sherrie Mueller, is a

guidance resource specialist there. But region isn’t the only thing the dentists have in common, they all went to and graduated from the University of Florida. At UF, the dentists received topnotch education in dentistry. Add that to the modern equipment that is in their office, and patients get the best in dental care. Dr. Mueller met Dr. Walding several years when he was still a student at UF. He rememebers Dr. Walding offering him a job. Two years later, after he graduated, Dr. Mueller took him up on the offer. He has been practicing with Drs. Walding and Carter ever since, fours

years ago. “I met him my sophomore year of dental school,” Dr. Mueller remembers. “Toward the middle of my senior year, he called me up and I took a look at the practice. I ended up taking the job. It is one of the few partnerships that has actually turned out really well.” In the nearly five years he has been a dentist, Dr. Mueller said he loves helping people, especially someone who has been in pain. And in the short time the new office has been open, several people have been choosing Dental Associates of Central Florida as their place to get braces, implants, fillings, crowns and bridges, root

canals, cleanings, and more. Every Tuesday, an endodontist comes to the office, making DACF the only place in Plant City where people can be treated by an endodontist.

For anyone seeking dental care, give Dental Associates of Central Florida a call at (813) 719-2222. Let the amiable staff and highly skilled dentists put a big smile on your face.

Payne heating and a/c

(863) 686-6163 www.payneair.com

Keeping cool no matter how hot One year in Florida is enough to convince even the most stubborn “snowbird” that air conditioning in the sunshine state is not a luxury – it is a necessity. When it comes to getting the most out of this requisite, trusting a professional is an understatement, especially when the need comes at a steep price. As it is with most commodities in life, making an informed decision prior to purchase is imperative. Luckily, the experienced staff at Payne Air Conditioning is ready to assist the community in beating the summer heat for good. Originally established as a heating and appliance company by Charles Payne in 1939, the Payne name has stuck around for the last nearcentury, serving the community’s heating and cooling needs. The company provides installations, service, repairs and preventative maintenance to residential and commercial customers throughout

central Florida, while presenting their clients a “system to accommodate every home and budget.” Payne Air Conditioning and Heating, a certified factory authorized dealer (CFAD), dedicates itself to quality customer satisfaction with each client they encounter, which is why they offer a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee with every installation they perform. The company ensures this through knowledge in their products, a well-trained staff of professionals, and a strong relationship with their customers. As a member of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce for more than 50 years, Payne Air Conditioning and Heating makes a presence in the community whenever the opportunity arises. It is very much a local business and understands that the community’s residents and businesses are what keep the company afloat in troubled waters. The group also makes it their mission to donate, whenever possible,

to local organizations such as United Way and the YMCA. President of the company and Lakeland native Frank Lansford said that “This is the community I have grown up in and I want nothing more than to see this community succeed. I truly look forward to what the future holds.” With more than 95 employees, 26 service vehicles, and 23 installation

trucks, it’s easy to see how Payne Air has gained the honored standing of the “largest air conditioning company in Polk County.” The staff at Payne Air is divided among four departments: service, maintenance, and residential and commercial accounts. While their commercial accounts cover all of central Florida, the residential business Payne Air

receives comes predominantly from Winter Haven, Plant City, Lakeland, Auburndale, Haines City, Bartow, Mulberry and Lake Wales. The company’s employees enjoy an array of benefits, including health insurance, 401k plans, vacation/holiday pay, and multiple opportunities for advancement, which makes it no surprise that the group’s average employment span is six years. One of the higher-profile jobs that Payne Air has been contracted to undertake is the Southgate Publix, which was recently demolished. Payne Air will provide all of the air conditioning for the new building once it is constructed. What truly sets Payne Air Conditioning and Heating apart from other businesses is that their

service technicians are repairmen. When trouble brews, the staff comes out to the location and simply fixes the problem with no hidden agenda to sell a new product. The men receive no commission or bonuses for selling extra equipment and would rather remedy the issue with their skills as opposed to a sale. “We have gained the respect and trust of our customers so that when they need someone to come out, they know exactly who will show up,” Lansford said. Payne Air offers a variety of services that are sometimes uncommon in the profession. For example, their office hours are 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday thru Friday and 8-5 on Saturday. Therefore, if a client calls at any time during the extended hours that they are open, it is not considered overtime.

They also have service technicians live and on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in order to more efficiently serve their customers. Another unique factor that has contributed to the success of Payne Air is their “VIC” (Very Important Customer) Maintenance Plan, which is a must going into the summer season. The plan was designed as preventative maintenance on an air conditioning unity, much like the tune-up necessary for your car every 3,000 miles. Not only does the plan prolong the life of your a/c system, but it helps it to run more efficiently and consume less energy. The program costs $85 per year and includes a full-service tune-up. With this maintenance, you receive 10 percent off all future repairs (if

any), priority service to ensure you are served as quickly as possible, and you will never be charged overtime for services rendered. This easy maintenance process is actually rewarded by Lakeland Electric, which credits $50 to an account if the service is rendered on your a/c unit. Furthermore, there is a new tax credit available that will credit the consumer up to $1,500 from 2009-2010 if they buy a new “high-efficiency” air conditioning unit. In addition, both Lakeland Electric and TECO offer rebates up to $275 for the same situation. This is a wonderful way to encourage those in the community to conserve and control their energy usage while saving money at the same time.

Pro Fitness solutions

Jim Fish Plant City, FL 33563 (813) 716-4555

Never too Late to Lose that Weight If you’re anything like the average American, you are probably feeling guilty that you slacked off on your New Year’s resolution to lose that holiday weight once and for allespecially with bikini season in our midst. Or you went to try on those golf pants that seemed to fit so perfectly at Christmas, but realized that the mass of strawberry shortcakes we were over-exposed to in February didn’t exactly shrink your waistline – they had fruit in them, right? Thankfully, all you need is a positive attitude and a little guidance to get you back on the path to productivity. When it comes to Jim Fish, the owner of Pro Fitness Solutions, it’s easy to see why his clients are so enthusiastic about their workout regimens and results. Having been a certified trainer for four years, Fish is no stranger to what motivates individuals to adopt healthy lifestyles. His philosophy on training in general is that it is composed of both mind and body – it is not strictly directed toward the physical. In order to achieve this dual mindset, individuals need to be trained in two aspects: “Clients need to develop a positive mental attitude and learn to adapt, overcome, and conquer,” states Fish. While this may seem like a heavy workload to master, determination can take you to heights never before thought attainable, especially with a helping hand from a professional. Aside from Fish’s National Federation of Professional Trainers certification for bodybuilding, martial arts, and wrestling, he has gained a multitude of experience through his prior career as a professional athlete and previous military training. Fish has also enjoyed supervising beach and park boot camps alongside another trainer in Sarasota as well as giving kickboxing lessons in his spare time. Fish’s personal fitness

programs implemented range from beginner levels to the most advanced with everything in between. Fish specializes in tailoring the fitness regimen to specifically cater to a client’s needs, whether it be for fitness competitions, kickboxing tournaments, or just an all-around lifestyle upgrade. While each client Fish has encountered is a success story that he feels a certain personal attachment toward, one that specifically came to mind during our interview was of a man he trained in Sarasota. When the two started their sessions, the man was 64 years old and at 22 percent body fat. Within five months, Fish had helped the man slim down to a mere 10 percent body fat and boost his self-confidence more than ever with all the complements he received from women on the transformation. The man made a tremendous effort to thank Fish constantly, but Fish would always remind him that, “It’s not me, it’s you and your positive mental attitude!” In terms of his transition from Sarasota to Plant City, Fish could not be more pleased. “I love [Plant City] because it’s so laid back and relaxing. Everybody is so nice and best of all, I’m closer to my family.” Originally from Michigan, Fish has been a resident of the Sunshine State for almost 10 years and is happy to call the Plant City community “home” after such a long journey. Although many individuals believe they can attain desired fitness results without personal consult, it is next to impossible to know what is best for your body without the proper background and experience. If a person is not educated in proper form and how to specifically train, it could hinder them more than it would help. Even with the proper training, motivation is the leading factor in why those pesky New Year’s diets get thrown aside. With the help of personal trainers such as Fish, the motivation you lack is waiting in your community. For more information regarding Fish and his services, call (813) 716-4555.

Right at Home Sometimes bumps in road lead to new opportunities

The Right at Home van can be seen driving around Plant City.

Tino and Debbie Suarez are available for anyone who is interested in Right at Home.

Plant City small business owners Tino and Debra Suarez turned their layoffs into the launch of a new career. First layoff was Tino’s. After working as a mortgage lender for 24 years, Tino lost his job when the housing industry started to struggle. Soon after, Debra, who had been a claims adjuster for nearly 30 years, lost her position because of the company’s decision to downsize. Sound familiar? Early on Tino had experienced the caring for his 86-year-old mom. “I went through the struggles of sandwiching my life between job, family, and an aging parent. I will tell you this,” said Tino, “the quality of my job performance went spiraling, and my family life suffered. Balancing my daily responsibilities took its toll on us. Those were trying days. Mom passed away in December 2007.” The lessons learned inspired the Suarezes to start their own business. In January, they opened Right at Home of Plant City, a chain that connects caregivers with older adults needing assistance. It is a franchise that started in 1999, offering nonmedical care and work primarily for the elderly and disabled, along with companion care that is focused more on a client’s environment. Say someone suffers from arthritis and can’t bend over to make the bed or prepare a meal, Right at Home helps them stay comfortable, independent, and treated with respect like adults. There are two major differences for in-home care agencies. The first big difference is protection. Debra’s expertise in the insurance industry supports the importance of liability coverage for all her Right at Home caregivers. “Our caregivers,” Debra said, “are employees, not selfemployed contractors as with most inhome care agencies. A caregiver that is not properly insured and bonded can seriously affect the family’s personal security, financial liability,

reliability of service, and the quality of care for their loved one. It’s never worth the risks.” “I always ask the families,” said Tino, “would you run the risk of hiring a self-contracted roofer who is not bonded and insured? I believe the State of Florida should make it mandatory for all in-home care agencies to disclose in writing when their caregivers or home companions are self contractors and are not properly insured, bonded, or have worker’s compensation coverage.” Because Right at Home caregivers are employees, they are properly insured and bonded, and they

thoroughly perform an extensive background check so the family is protected. The second big difference between in-home care agencies is accessibility. Right at Home of Plant City will never use an answering service company. Sitting back in his office chair, Tino said with a big smile, “We do not care what time of day or night, what holiday, or whatever… you will always talk personally to me, my wife, or a member of my staff. We are busiest in the late hours of the night when local family members are dealing with the release of a loved

one from a medical facility and they cannot get a call back from an inhome care agency.” The Suarezes also receive many calls from out-of-state family members who are desperately trying to solve an urgent situation for their aging parents. Accessibility is very important for those concerned far away families. “No matter where you are, locally or states away, this immediate contact accessibility is priceless when you are in the direst crises or just can’t call during an agency’s normal working hours.” So what happens when you call

Right at Home? At no cost or commitment, Debra visits each family to formulate a personalized care plan before she assigns a specific caregiver. Then she reviews the plan with the selected caregiver. To create even more accountability, Right at Home caregivers have access to an online course that refreshes and prepares caregivers for each case, because each client is different. We want seniors and their families to come to us for anything that they may need, said Tino, adding that the ultimate goal is to make their loved one happy and comfortable, right at home.

Melinda Redgrave, who is with her family, said, “Thank you Right at Home for your consideration and care of my mother-in-law Lenora. Your caregivers have made it possible for our family to continue our normal lifestyles with peace of mind knowing she is in good hands when we are away from home.”

be more painful than you think

Why do stock prices fall? Various factors are involved, but in a nutshell, prices drop when more people want to sell stocks than buy them. Conversely, the more people who buy a particular stock, the faster that stock’s price will rise. If you’ve studied basic economics and the law of supply and demand, you’ve already got a pretty clear sense of why stock prices move the way they do. And yet, while the process sounds fairly logical, the behavior of many investors isn’t — which gives you some good investment opportunities right now. To understand why so many investors have acted in a way that may be counter-productive, let’s look at consumer behavior in another context. Suppose a hypothetical couple, Mike and Mary Ann, bought a house five years ago for $200,000. They liked everything about the house, and it was the right size to meet their family’s needs for many years to come. However, the sharp decline in the housing market has caused Mike and Mary Ann such concern that they decide to sell their house, even though they can only get $160,000 for it. By selling now, they reason, they can avoid further drops, and when the market stabilizes, they can buy another house in the same neighborhood. To sum up: Mike and Mary Ann took a $40,000 loss on a house they didn’t even need to sell. In essence, they were betting that the housing market, against all historical evidence, would not recover enough to compensate them for staying put. Most people would question the rationality of this type of behavior. Yet many of these same people do the same thing when it comes to investments.

Specifically, over the past year and a half, they have sold investments — even quality investments — that still met their needs for growth, income or a combination of both. And when they’ve sold these investments, they’ve taken losses — sometimes, big losses. Just like Mike and Mary Ann, they thought they must sell now to avoid bigger setbacks later. Don’t make that mistake. If you weren’t planning on selling your investments before the market decline, why sell them now, when you’ll just be locking in a loss? Many successful investors hold the same investments for 20, 30 or 40 years — in fact, sometimes they pass these investments on to their children, who also hold them for decades. Are you so sure that your investments, which may indeed have declined 40 percent or more over the past couple of years, won’t recover those losses and climb to new heights in the years ahead? You may someday need to sell, but do so for the right reasons — a change in your goals, a need to rebalance your portfolio or a fundamental change in the companies in which you’ve invested. In the meantime, not only should you hold on to the investments that that still meet your needs, but you should also consider adding new investments while the price is so low. The more shares you own, the better your financial position will be when the market turns around. This type of behavior takes patience, discipline and faith in our markets. But over the past century, the investors who have demonstrated these traits have been well rewarded — and there’s no reason you can’t attain the same results.

Background: I come from a heritage of Spanish roots that are deep in good, family values and old traditions. The traditions and values that I remember most were how we cared for each other and made sure that our aging parents would always remain at home with us. There was never a second thought or personal reason to remove them from their place of happiness, safety, and the love of our family. Aspirations: Now that I have reached the autumn of my years, I have a deep desire to make a difference in the quality of life, security, and happiness for those aging parents that fear leaving the comfort and privacy of their home. My mission is to reach,

in time, the families that are currently struggling with the decision of placing their aging parents somewhere else and help them avoid having that decision become a regret and guilt for the rest of their lives. Inspiration: My in-home care company, Right at Home of Plant City, has allowed my inspirations of helping my fellow man become a reality. Successes: Successes are blessings of life. I have been blessed with a wonderful wife, good children, lovely grand children, a loving sister, and of course old family members. What else can a man want?

Paula Meyers She and her family own and run Meyer’s Print Shack. Background: I am from a large family consisting of four boys and three girls. I am a life-long resident of Plant City. First and foremost I am a wife and mother. I enjoy the shirt business, and I’m also a real estate agent. After Brent pursued his career in pro wrestling, he realized his calling was helping people and has spent the last 19 years as a Tampa police officer doing just that. We have a 16-year-old daughter, Hayley, who is a Plant City High School cheerleader, and a 15-year-old son, Jay, who plays for the football team. They are all very active in their church, Church on the Rock, in Plant City. Aspirations: We believe the start of our business is an example of God’s work. We had no plans of starting our own business and now here we are. We feel truly blessed and thank the Lord every day for allowing us this opportunity and in doing so

promise to produce good quality work for a reasonable price and in a timely manner. Inspirations: Each other. We laugh when people ask what we do in our spare time – what is spare time? We have full-time jobs, two very active teenagers, but the T-shirt business gives us the opportunity to all work together and to continue to inspire and encourage each other to keep on keeping on. Our hopes are that this will be something that our children will be able to take over when they get older and continue to grow it. Success: We are a success because we get to work together as a family every day. Everyone has their part, and it is just as important as the other. We are a success because we have each other.

real estate walden lake review

What’s new? S u b m i t t e d by N ata l i e S w e e t

The rain is here and Walden Lake is looking healthy and green again. The Butterfly Garden at the park is blooming again thanks to the Plant City Garden Club that recently replanted that area. The permits are in for the dog park, and I know that I have been saying

every month that construction would begin soon, but it is truly going to happen and soon. At the May 18 board meeting, the directors were presented with and voted to have a new Web site developed by OpenHoa.org. It will be a very user-friendly, interactive site

with lots of good information for the community. They plan to have the deed restrictions uploaded on the site for each of the individual neighborhoods. There will be opportunities for advertisers and much more. Watch for this change in the near future. There was a president’s meeting immediately following a board of director’s meeting where they talked about the new office and storage buildings. The office building will be in the area of the old barn. The Board is hopeful that construction can begin by August. The Board reminded the presidents of the “Sign Policy” that there may only be one sign at the entrance of the subdivision for events such as garage or moving sales and open houses. The signs should be removed within an hour of the end of the event. It was reported that Marlene Merrin is overseeing the deed restrictions in 11 of the 31 neighborhoods in Walden Lake, and that each of those neighborhoods have a specific set of

covenants to which she must adhere. President’s meetings are held quarterly and immediately follow the board meetings, which are held on the third Monday of each month. The most recent board meeting was June 15. Youth Summer Camp will begin in late June and run into early August at The Walden Lake Golf and Country Club. There will be golf, tennis, swimming, and fitness instruction offered to the campers each day. For more information, call the club at (813) 752-1171 extension 331 or visit the Web site at waldenlakegolf.com. Greg Garnster, the golf teaching professional, has begun offering private lessons and clinics at the club. Anyone interested in learning more should give him a call at extension 3226. Need a place for your upcoming party, banquet, meeting, or event? You name it, Walden Lake Golf and Country Club can do it. For more information on booking events, call Michele at (813) 752-1171 extension 222.

Often times I have people ask me that if they had a higher credit score, could they be approved for more money. A majority of the time the answer is simply, “No.” The largest factor that drives your loan approval amount is your debt-to-income ratio, also known as DTI. This is a simple ratio that calculates a percentage by the following equation: Total monthly obligations that appear on your credit report PLUS the new proposed house payment – which includes taxes, insurance, and monthly mortgage insurance, if applicable – DIVIDED by your total monthly pretax income. It is important to note that the monthly mortgage payment that is calculated in your DTI does consider property taxes and insurance, even if you pay these annually on your own – do not escrow your payment. The reasoning is that even though you may not actually pay this liability monthly, the lender must still acknowledge that it exists. So in many cases, you can be pre-approved for different maximum loan amounts varying on the specific property that you have selected. The

reason why the maximum loan amount would change is due to escrows, which are the taxes and insurance on the particular property that you are interested in. Here is an example: Let’s say you are approved for a loan of $100,000 assuming typical taxes and insurance. You find a home built in 1903 and the monthly insurance is $280 per month. You would no longer need to be approved for the original loan of $100,000 since the insurance is more than typical estimates. The opposite would hold true if you found a newer home in which the insurance only ran $70 per month. You would then be approved for more than $100,000. It all comes down to the estimates for taxes and insurance used in calculating your maximum loan amount, and how the home you selected may differ from those figures. So don’t be afraid about getting a good pre-approval loan amount, but simply understand the factors that affect your approval amount, and you can shop at ease knowing how the taxes and insurance affect your approval.

Buyers today are looking for “the deal” in the marketplace, but what constitutes a deal? There are properties for sale in practically every neighborhood, and unfortunately nearly half of all properties are bank-owned… foreclosures. I would venture to say that those are the deals – the best opportunity for a savvy buyer who is either investing or looking for a primary residence. Banks do not want to be in the home inventory business and there is still more inventory on the market than what is going off or being sold. That means that we are still in a depreciating market. Some buyers believe that the shortsale property is the deal. The lenders who must approve the short sales are not always in agreement. In a short-sale transaction, patience is the key – for the buyer – and usually that only goes so far. What about a regular, not-socommon, traditional home for sale? The folks who are ready to sell in a down market, and may have some equity, want “the deal” on the purchase of the next home. It has been

stated in other articles that a seller can still sell in this market and make up some or most of the loss when they purchase in a depreciating market. Not a bad opportunity at all. How long will these opportunities last? I have seen consistent market improvement since January. Slowly, the number of home sales is rising each month as the number of homes coming on the market decreases. Mortgage interest rates aren’t dropping – they have gone up in some cases. Some realtors are experiencing multiple offers on properties. Yes, opportunity does still abound, but this depreciating market is ready to make a turn to stabilizing. For the first-time homebuyer, there is an $8,000 tax credit and possibly an advance on that credit to use for closing costs. Do you know that if you have not owned a home in the past three years, you could potentially qualify as a first-time buyer? For the investor, getting properties at bargain prices before the market turns is more than advantageous. It is great to be a buyer these days.

Sales are up. Inventory is down. Interest rates are still low. Government incentives are up. Prices are still falling a little overall, but what does this all mean? Is it finally time to buy? Should I sell now? What should you do?! According to both the Greater Tampa Association of Realtor and the Lakeland Association of Realtors: here are some facts and figures. Monthly sales are back at sustained levels not seen since 2006. Single family home inventories are also at the lowest levels we have seen since 2006. While average selling prices have still been falling slightly; this is partially due to the short sales and foreclosures that are finally clearing out of the market. Additionally, there is a lot of selling activity at the lower end of the market as a result of the $8000 tax credit available to many first time home buyers. These factors have resulted in a disproportionate number of lower priced home sales, and as such, have cased the average selling prices to reflect a lower figure. So based on the numbers: have we finally hit the bottom? Well, nobody really knows for sure, but the numbers seem to indicate that if we are not there yet, we are really close! As interest rates seem to be inching up, there may never be a better time to take advantage of this unique market. Still confused? Please call Team Wainoris today. We can help you sort through the numbers to see if now is really the best time for you to make a move!

sports Cheerleading cheerleading program and was able to give valuable instruction to Tarin and her older sister, Tori, who is also an accomplished athlete. For three years, Tori was a member of the Gators dance team, the Dazzlers, which performed at basketball games. Tarin was a varsity cheerleader for the Durant Cougars all four years of high school. As a senior, she was chosen as the captain of the team. During Durant’s spring break, she went to the Gators cheerleading tryout. “It was very stressful. I knew some of the girls and boys from previous competitions and that made me feel a little more comfortable,” Tarin said as she reminisced about the grueling, three-day tryout. Cheering today is more than jumping up and down, wearing short skirts, and hollering into the stands. It is a highly challenging sport with trained, skilled athletes. So to be chosen as a member of a cheerleading team with the caliber of Florida’s is quite an honor. The first day was open tryouts in which no one was cut from the competition. The second day consisted of learning new chants and cheers along with a tumbling competition. On the final day, the contestants were judged on their appearance, athleticism, chants, stunting, and showmanship. The head coach, assistant coach, current cheerleaders, and a former cheerleader formed the team of judges. “They promised to e-mail us right away to let us know if we made the Former Durant High School student, Tarin Moses, is the only freshman cheerleader for the University of Florida. sports flag football

Dream season ends Raiders lose in state playoffs. S to r y by J o e B o w l e s

Every so often, the best team loses. Most who are familiar with the fastest growing high school sport, flag football, believed the Plant City Raiders would win the state championship this year, especially after last year’s second-place finish. Unfortunately, the Raiders lost in an error-filled game to Tallassee Leon High 13-7 on May 9. “We believed we had the best team in the playoffs. We had a good team last year and we felt that we were a better team this year. The girls were faster and they had a better understanding of the game,” reflected assistant coach Larry Langston. Nearly 160 schools across the state offer girls flag football as a varsity sport. It began 11 years ago with 40

schools participating. Three years ago, the Florida High School Athletic Association began holding playoffs to determine a state champion. Plant City has been in the mix for the last two seasons. It is obvious why flag football has gained such popularity. It is a combination of rugby and American football. The game consists of four 12-minute quarters, with seven players on each side of the ball. Fumbles are dead balls, every player is an eligible receiver, and multiple laterals are witnessed throughout the game, with talented athletes running all over the field. It is an exciting game and no one in the state of Florida is more exciting than Raider quarterback Quet Shaw.

Shaw has won so many honors that it is impossible to list them all. In basketball, she was a first team AllWestern Conference selection. In flag football, she was an All-State selection in 2008 and is a sure bet to be named to the team again this year. She was also chosen as flag football’s “Player of the Year” in Hillsborough County the last two seasons. Fast and elusive, Shaw makes every play exciting. With a supporting cast like captain Katie Peterson, and fellow All-County selections, Collisha Walker and Yasmeen Honors Thomas, the Raiders have won 29 games over the last two seasons while recording only two defeats. Both losses were in the state playoffs. After defeating Tarpon Springs 3533 in the quarterfinals, the Raiders lost again to last year’s nemesis, Tallassee Leon, with less than a minute remaining when the Lions intercepted a tipped pass and returned it to the one-yard line. They scored on the next

play, breaking a 7-7 tie and ending Plant City’s dream season. The Raiders had their opportunities. They drove deep into Lions territory on three occasions, twice inside the 10-yard line, but they came up empty each time. The Raiders scored their lone touchdown in the third quarter on a 44-yard pass from Shaw to Cathleen Evans. Langston feels that “next year may be more challenging. Our goal will be to win the district and everything else will be icing on the cake. We will be fortunate to have Katie (Evans) as our new quarterback, and we expect to be competitive, but we will be missing a lot of skilled players from this year’s team.” The Raiders will see 10 of their players graduate. In addition to Shaw, the Raiders will lose Walker, Peterson, Samantha Wicker, Shaniqua Abdullah, Articia Bennett, Ariel Daniels, Caitlyn Philpot, Lexie Meyer, and Tekeyha Clark.

Erika Kolakowski S to r y by K a S e y M i l l e r

Erika Kolakowski is the true definition of an elite athlete. She not only dedicates much of her time into the Plant City High School girls track and field team, but she also works hard at every practice and meet and pushes her physical abilities to the limit. Her dedication to sports and strong leadership skills has earned her the title as Athlete of the Month for June. The head coach, John Ackerman, of the PCHS girls track and field team agrees that Kolakowski deserves this

96

june 2009 thefocusmagazine.com

title because of her mentally tough attitude that she brings to every practice and her ability to remain focused before her racing events. “She is basically the hardest worker, she is a leader – the one who is most dedicated and always gives her best effort every time she steps to the starting line,” said Ackerman. Kolakowski fell in love with the competition of track and the supportive spirit she received from her fellow teammates, as well as from girls

on other teams. She is also a strong believer in staying healthy and it is obvious that running track keeps her fit. To a competitor like Kolakowski, being mentally prepared is vital for winning any race. “I look at other girls’ times, visualize my race, and work on pacing and meeting my time,” said Kolakowski. Her running events for this year’s season were the 4x800 meter, 800 meter, and 4x400 meter, all of which she and her teammates went to state with and made record timing for PCHS. Kolakowski finished eighth at the state meet in her individual 800-meter race with a time of 2:22 and is determined to place even higher next year as a senior. Although the ability to run may seem like a natural talent given to everyone, the everyday practices the girls are required to complete on the track take running to a whole new level of difficulty. Even for a leader like Kolakowski. She believes one of the hardest challenges she has faced as an athlete is “finishing the hard workouts during track practice because it takes

an immense amount of physical and mental energy.” In addition, Kolakowski looks up to her mother as an athlete because she thinks of her mom as a dedicated athlete and one who has always supported her throughout anything she has ever done. She thanks her mom the most for coming to all her meets, in addition to helping her on timing by training with her on the weekends. Moreover, she is not only an athlete to look up to, but she also leads her class academically. She challenges herself with AP level classes and manages to be considerably involved in school club activities like Youth Alive, National Honor Society, Key club, and the Academic team. How does she handle all of this? “You just have to prioritize your time well and have a passion to succeed,” said Kolakowski. This year, she was also given the Track Scholar Athlete Award by coach Ackerman for her hard work and incredible leadership, which showed through on the team.

WE HATE OUR TRAINER. BUT WE LOVE THE RESULTS! Many Americans have the desire to get in shape, but the idea of joining a gym and disciplining themselves to go frequently prevents them from moving forward. Mike realizes people need convenience and accountability if they are going to live a healthy lifestyle. After 17 years experience in fitness clubs and personal training, Mike decided to start a different style of personal training, which has proven to be successful for many people in Plant City. Santos Cardenas and Jessica Glover S to r y by K a s e y M i l l e r

These two Plant City High School seniors set the standards as a positive role model in the classroom and around their community. Santos Cardenas and Jessica Glover have not only challenged their minds in AP level classes and maintained an exceptional GPA score, but they also have greatly contributed to their community through projects and fundraisers. Cardenas’s advice for future seniors is to “capture every moment and treasure the times in high school because they don’t last very long.” He certainly made the best of his high school career by participating in clubs like National Honor Society, Key club, and serving the community in the Hillsborough River and Waterway Cleanup two years consecutively. He also has taken part in trips through his New Life Center Youth group, which involved going to Miami for “Acquire the Fire” and Universal Studios for “Rock the Universe.” Although he has enjoyed all of the activities he has been involved in, his favorite one was the Strawberry Booth

98

june 2009 thefocusmagazine.com

by the East Hillsborough Historical Society. He had a lot of fun with his friends selling strawberry shortcake as a fundraiser for the Plant City Museum. Moreover, his work in the Special Olympics is something Cardenas proudly recognizes because of the help he brought to those in need. He was responsible for making sure the track and field athletes were at their assigned racing lines and helped to motivate each runner before a race. Becoming a National Merit finalist is something Glover is proud of because “it is a very prestigious award since it recognizes the top 1 percent of students in the nation.” She has also received several academic awards, including National Advanced Placement Scholar, first-place FBLA Business Communications District Competition, and letters in both varsity volleyball and soccer. Furthermore, she was involved in clubs like FBLA, Academic Team, Best Buddies, and Mu Alpha Theta – a math league. While her academic achievements have opened the doors for many future opportunities, she will remember the

Future Business Leaders of America club as the group she had the most fun with during her high school years. She made many friends and enjoyed all the fun times they shared during competitions. In addition, Glover was the salutatorian of her 2009 senior class and has recently been accepted into the University of South Florida Honors College as a research scholar. She will be paired up with another scholar student for a specific type of research, which she hopes will involve either

cancer or dementia. Let’s just say she will not have to worry about paying off any financial loans for college. Cardenas will also be attending USF with a 75 percent scholarship from Bright Futures and looks forward to achieving his goals as a Bulls student. Whichever career path these two graduating students decide to take, it is clear that they will be hardworking individuals. Their dedication has already earned them the rewarding title of Senior of the Month, one of many accomplishments to come.

They learned because they wanted to. Also, this nonsense about being No. 1 at all costs is for the birds. Have you noticed the inflated grade point averages with all those AP courses offered to high school students by local colleges? Do well in everything, but don’t obsess about who gets the top nod. You should want to learn because you have a genuine desire to learn more. You want to have a better understanding of what makes the world go round. Three tips for life S u b m i t t e d by a l r u e c h e l

I love this time of year because I get asked to speak at a lot of graduations. Folks always want to know the secrets to a happy life. There is no secret. It’s all out there for you to discover. But since you asked, here are my three tips for a happy successful life. 1. Be a grateful person. You got here because a whole lot of people busted their behinds to make sure you got the best education possible. Your parents worried about you, they prayed for you, they may have politely encouraged you. I know they attended fundraisers and open houses and games and plays. Your teachers put up with you, good mood or bad

connection here. Schools can’t mention it, but I firmly believe you were created, by whatever means, to do great things. God loves you. He doesn’t specialize in mediocrity. You are not mediocre. The world will try to convince you otherwise, in so many ways, for the rest of your life. Listen to me! That is a lie! You are a deep, gushing well of optimism. Your dreams are so large and multilayered that no canvas of any size can display them. You posses within yourself, planted there by God, the ability to make choices that will impact the lives of others in wonderful ways. And here’s the part that really turns me on about God. He holds us to a higher level of accountability than any other man, person, or government. And yet, at the same time, if we screw up, which we will, he forgives us and even has a way out to set things right again, if I merely ask. So what’s your purpose in life? That’s for you to find out in your journey. And believe me, it’s a question that comes back often as life happens and changes and you grow and learn along the way. On some days, it is as clear as your stupid cell phone ringing in the middle of a lecture. On other days, it will be like the sweet smell of orange blossoms that drifts in the wind from miles away. Either way, God is playing your heartstrings. Listen when he does. That’s it. Three short tips for this graduation season from a grateful father of four.

Buddy Freddy’s Get a taste of grandma’s cooking. S to r y by W e n dy S u z e t t e B r o w n

If you haven’t been to Buddy Freddy’s lately, then you really must come back to a piece of Southern charm. Magnolia trees round out the white, cracker building with a large porch full of rocking chairs. Picture yourself relaxing and rocking away with an ice cream cone after a delicious meal modeled after your Grandma’s southern cooking. Shop for antique dishes and lamps. But definitely come and meet Miss Stephanie and her friendly staff. You will leave feeling like old friends. So what is so special about Buddy Freddy’s? Star Buffet has owned this restaurant for the last 10 years. It was previously owned and managed by the Johnson family. Besides the fantastic array of fresh-cooked items to choose from, there’s the staff. There are 35 staff members, with many working there for nearly 20 years. The longevity of the staff is important. They enjoy what they do, and that’s cooking for you. They are very caring

and personable. Gary Gore holds seminars for Humana regularly. He emphatically said, “Stephanie makes my job easier. There is always fresh, quality food – something for everybody. Stephanie Reaves and her staff take much pride in their jobs.” Start your day right with the breakfast buffet. There are pancakes, Belgian waffles, French toast sprinkled with powdered sugar, crispy hash browns, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, golden pork chops, crispy fried chicken, flaky biscuits with gravy, home-style grits, banana bread, muffins, yogurt. Need I go on? “It’s your own fault if you leave hungry,” laughingly says Joe Lazzars. Jim Love is a regular who enjoys the “good food, good home cooking, and the staff here is personable. They get to know you like a friend. Where else can you get pork chops or fried chicken for breakfast?” Wednesday and Friday, the

breakfast buffet is only $4.99 with coffee, tea, or soda. You can’t beat the price or the home-cooked menu. Food, food, glorious food! The lunch buffet is $8.65 while the dinner buffet if $10.45. On Fridays, stop in for the seafood buffet and be surprised with whole catfish, catfish nuggets, fried and steamed shrimp, stuffed crab, fried scallops, crab cakes, and broiled salmon. On Saturdays, stop in for the barbecue picnic buffet specializing in corn dogs, barbecue ribs, chicken, beans, and even corn on the cob. Sundays, enjoy a grand buffet of turkey,

ham, shrimp, pot roast, roast beef, sausage, spicy chicken wings, smoked ribs, chicken, and, of course, an array of desserts with many of them sugar free. The salad bar is loaded with red potato salad, chicken salad, coleslaw, fruit, carrot salad, and the special English pea salad. For dessert try the red velvet cake, sweet potato pie, cheesecake, fruit cobblers, or warm bread pudding. Need I go on? You can’t beat the price. You can’t beat the homemade quality. Get up and enjoy true southern-style cooking with a smile. Customer favorites are meatloaf, black-oak-smoked sausage, and chicken and dumplings. Nightlife at the Red Rose S to r y by A a r o n O b e r l i n

He sings another one, another ballad the crowd loves. This song dates back to the 1960s, three decades older than the previous hit his female singing partner performed. The dance floor fills with upbeat couples, embracing each other and swaying to the rhythm. Starlight twinkles from the ceiling above, glamorizing the room. “And more, much more than this,” he sings, as a red spotlight shines on him and a stage in the middle of the room. “I did it my way.” Ralph Allocco is performing in the dining room at the Red Rose Inn and Suites, a hotel off I-4 known for its entertainment and fine dining. It is another Friday night for him and his threesome group, Second Wind, another slammed house filled with newcomers and regulars for the Red Rose. Although the hotel is in Plant City, people from all across western and central Florida frequent the dining room. “We came over a year ago last May. We wanted somewhere nice where we

could dance, and the Red Rose was suggested,” said Auburndale resident Jennifer Locurcio, a bride who was holding her reception in the dining room. “So my mom made reservations, and we’ve been coming back ever since. Ralph Allocco was playing that night, so we first started coming back when he was singing.” Allocco, along with singers Mellissa Malone and Tony Johnson, has been singing at the Red Rose for the past three years. He and Second Wind have been designated as the Signature Band for the hotel, something for which Allocco said he is thankful. “I count my blessings every day,” said Allocco. “Mrs. Evelyn is a great woman to work for. She makes coming [to the Red Rose] a wonderful experience.” Mrs. Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. are the owners of the popular hotel. She has put much effort into making the Red Rose as elegant and

entertainment CONTINUED FROM PAGE 106 friendly as possible. So it makes sense she picked a band like Second Wind, one clad in tuxedos and gowns, and a group who is social and amiable with its crowd. But the group is more than just down-to-earth people. Each performer brings decades of singing experience to the act. Allocco, who has been singing for nearly 30 years, started performing in bands when he was 12 years old. Malone, by her own admission, has been singing for nearly 40 years, “Since I could talk.” Malone almost made her way into a national spotlight in the ‘90s. MTV was considering her for a hosting gig on a then-new reality show. “Some executives saw me performing at the Chase Club in Westchase. They asked me if I wanted to move to New York to be a host. I didn’t want to move my kids to New York and away from their father,” said Malone, a mother of four. Before Second Wind took the stage,

Destiny stood in the spotlight. Destiny is the house band at the Red Rose. With a varied repertory, the group performs at least four days a week at the Red Rose, everything from corporate parties to friendly gettogethers to singing for patrons in the dining room. When Second Wind finished its set, at 11 p.m., Destiny once again rocked the stage. Destiny is yet another trio: Dennis Hoag plays guitar, Bruce Farr plays keyboard, and Genesis Alvarez is a vocalist. Destiny has been playing at the Red Rose for five years. Alvarez joined the group three years ago. In her few years there, the Red Rose has become like a family to her. “Everyone knows you here. People ask me how my son is, and ‘how are you?’” said Alvarez. For many of the regulars, Friday and Saturday nights at the Red Rose are times to see familiar faces. For firsttimers, it is an enchanting experience, a new world of glamour and glitz just off the interstate.

Mayfaire by the lake Keeping the Arts Alive in Plant City. S to r y by H e at h e r D av i s

It’s a well-known fact that Plant City is known for its strawberries. The city is host to the Strawberry Festival, the Strawberry Festival Parade, and the Strawberry Queen. But there is much more to Plant City than strawberries. In fact, it is home to a thriving art community. The community has been fortunate to experience these displays of art through various venues held at the Bruton Memorial Library, coffee shops, and local art showings. Recently, a new opportunity to view local artwork had arrived thanks to the East Hillsborough Art Guild. An outdoor art show was held at the Walden Lake Park by the lake on May 16, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event was promoted as the Walden

Lake Art and Plant Sale, and featured more than 14 different artists, as well as a wide array of plants. Young artists just starting out in the art world propped canvases against trees while experienced veterans displayed framed artwork using professional means of display. People who didn’t come across that special one-of-a-kind piece of artwork were bound to come home with a thriving plant. While not as big as Mayfaire, the venue was none the less beautiful. With the lake as a backdrop for the artists, big cool shade trees, and perfect weather, the atmosphere was serene. All artists in attendance agreed the park created a perfect venue. and plants, opportunity was provided for a fine picnic lunch from the Corner Store. They were on hand, offering fare from organic salads to homemade cookies and muffins. With fine art, plants, great

food, and a beautiful day, many people agreed that this event will need to be repeated again, possibly as soon as this fall.

Over the past several years, I have been an admitted patient for surgery and an out-patient for several endoscopic procredures. The staff throughout the entire hospital, and especially the Day Surgery Center, with which I have had most of my experience, made my stays extremely comfortable! From Pearl in admitting , to Dr. Butler, I cannot say enough about the quality of care that I was given! Living out of town, I would still not consider changing my doctors or hospital.
