Try shopping at these local stores. It will make your shopping experience more pleasurable, and it will support the Plant City community.

Fran Neilsen is heavily involved with the Plant City Christmas Parade. She has been for a couple decades. This year, however, there are going to be some new resolutions. Neilsen sat down with FOCUS and shared some details about the new resolutions and also about how she became involved with the Plant City Christmas Parade.

There will be Christmas decorations all across the place shortly as the end of the year draws near. Many people’s favorite decorations are lights. FOCUS took a look at one house that is covered in festive lights. But that isn’t the only house that got attention. One puts on an amazing show with a restored caboose. Haven’t heard about it? Learn about it here and go check it out for yourself. Some schools recently did some great things for Red Ribbon week and Veterans Day. The story is here in the local section. For more coverage on these events, check out FocusTV at www.thefocusmagazine.com.

letter FROM THE EDITOR
Shirley Conner Shirley Conner is the newest member of the Animal Wellness Center team. Dr. Conner is her Mom. She is a Jack Russell Terrier and is 5 months old.
Even though a lot of people call the holiday season a time of giving, I also like to think of it as the season of tradition. Whether it is a family getting together for Christmas dinner, the manner in which they exchange gifts or any other type of tradition, such practices allow people to find their place of comfort.
She likes to eat anything and everything, especially the things she’s not supposed to eat. She is very cute and loves to dress up. She also loves to play with her big brother Newman. He is her best friend.

For instance, I can’t imagine Christmas shopping by myself. It would be awkward. My father, brother-in-law and I meet up every year just before Christmas and do all of our shopping at once. We find ourselves searching everywhere looking for the perfect gifts, and by the end of the day, we usually have some good stories we can reminisce about later. Even though when people think about Christmas and traditions, they probably think about celebrating the birth of Christ, singing carols. Nevertheless, our quick-gift-shopping is still a tradition.
So this year, and in the past, FOCUS put together a shopping guide of stores in Plant City. It should help you find the perfect gifts for your loved ones. Even though shopping is a major part of Christmas, you should make sure you take some time to enjoy the Christmas shows, decorated houses and parades the season has to offer. A parade that is a decades-long tradition for Plant City is Christmas Parade, which happens on the first Friday of December. If you haven’t experienced it before, then you need to come check it out. Fran Neilsen, one of the people who organize the event, sat down and spoke with FOCUS about the parade -- its past and future. She is this month’s Spotlight interview. Enjoy.

The Florida Strawberry Festival was seeking a new general manager, and it found one in Paul Davis, a major of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department, on Oct. 27. He will retire from the Sheriff’s Department on Dec. 1, with 32 years of service. “It was a dream come true,” Davis said about the job offer. “The Strawberry Festival is very special to me. I’ve attended it since I was young enough to remember, and I have a lot of great memories here.”
Plant City has two new queens – Nikki Fraser, 19, and Victoria Watkins, 15 – and the two will make a run at Miss Florida next year. Fraser, who was crowned Miss Plant City USA, and Watkins, who was crowned Miss Plant City Teen USA, won the titles Oct. 19 after a five-judge panel at the Red Rose Ballroom picked them as the winners. Ten delegates competed for the two titles. If they win Miss Florida next year, then they will get the chance to vie for Miss USA in 2010.

Johnny Knotts, owner of Knotts Hardware at 314 S. Collins Street, will use his store as a place where people can drop toys off for Jordan’s Wish, a toy drive for those who are less fortunate. Knotts said he wants every child to have “the best Christmas possible.” People can drop toys off at the store the night of the Christmas parade. Knotts will then distribute them to needy families throughout the area. Jordan’s Wish stems from the late Jordan Miller, a child who tragically died in last year’s Christmas parade. Jordan’s mother will be in front of the store the night of the parade.

student with a strong educational foundation. Linda Herman is a pre-k special education teacher who believes in giving her students the best education and dedication. She was happy to give her bonus check to the school, because for several years, the school wanted to make improvements but did not have the funds. “I was very happy those improvements were finally made,” said Herman. TEACHERS SUCCEED AT A COMMON GOAL
Knights Elementary School teachers use bonus money for a good cause. St ory by Kryst el Know les
The faculty at Knights Elementary School is dedicated to its students’ health, education and support. Approximately two years ago, Knights Elementary was considered an “A” school and awarded bonus money for its excellence in education. The teachers decided to give all their bonus checks money to the school because they knew the school needed improvements. After the teachers donated all their bonus money, Knights Elementary received a large amount of funds from the school district, along with donations. The school decided to build a playground and a computer lad. There are 22 new computers and new software to facilitate teaching and learning. The teacher’s bonus checks were an estimated total of $37,000– the Parent and Teacher Association
provided Knights Elementary nearly $12,000, and the school district granted close to $49,000 to fund the new playground and computer lab. The estimated cost for the two new improvements is $98,000.
Herman was glad the playground was dedicated to a former teacher Amanda Carter. “She was a great teacher who passed away from cancer, but now her memory lives on. The official dedication ceremony to Amanda Carter will be very soon,” said Herman. Leanne Smith is a fifth grade teacher who optioned to give her bonus check money to the children. Smith noticed the students are more eager to learn because of the new technological upgrades. “It is very important the students learn how to use the computer to help them advance in life,” said Smith.
She is able to teach more effectively because of the smart boards in the lab. “I am going to teach the students how to use PowerPoint. Now it is easier because every child has a computer to work on,” said Smith. The students at Knights Elementary also have a large playground, helping the school promotes fitness and health. There is fitness equipment with signs to demonstrate how to properly exercise. Kimberly Simpson is a first grade teacher who was happy to help benefit the students. “Every kid can benefit from a new playground and lab,” said Simpson. “It was a major purchase the school was trying to save up for so many years.” Simpson said she is honored to be a part of the people who decided to make the much needed improvements. “My students deserve the best we can give.”
?
Janine Hall, the new principal at Knights Elementary, was pleased with the teachers because of their nobility and sacrifice. Hall is pleased to watch the students play on their new playground and is joyful when the students use the sophisticated computer lab. “This is a community-based school where the children are our central focus,” said Hall. There are several sections on the playground with different activities. “Everything is age-appropriate designed, and there is a fitness court.” Hall said the ultimate goal for Knights Elementary is to provide every

But before the staff can declare a winner, you need to go to www. thefocusmagazine.com and vote for a winner. There are many topics to vote for, so log on today and cast your vote. The categories are: Best BBQ, Best Hamburger, Best Chicken Wings, Best Coffee, Best Cuban, Best Dessert, Best Seafood, Most Romantic, Best Overall Service, Best Fried Chicken, Best Hometown Cookin’, Best Breakfast, Best Italian, Best

an international nonprofit public education program first established in 1972 to end collisions, deaths and injuries at railroad crossings and around tracks. Everything is free, including admission. “I do this every year at Christmas and Easter for the kids to enjoy and to teach them an awareness of railroad safety with Operation Lifesaver,” said R.W. “I hope the kids will remember what they learned and tap on their parent’s shoulder and tell them don’t try to beat the train at railroad crossings. It is not a good thing for an engineer to look into the face of folks sitting on the tracks in their vehicles and not be able to stop.”

Lane’s lights Lane Wetherington spends thousands of dollars on electricity each year for Christmas lights. St ory by Tracy Cox
The night shines bright in the December sky. It isn’t the Christmas Star though, it is more than 250,000 lights illuminating Christmas Lane in the heart of Dover. A neon sign glows near the entrance to the family strawberry farm where Lane Wetherington and his parents, Ron and Faye Wetherington, have created a winter wonderland for 28 years on one and a half acres at their home located at 2901 S. Wooten Road, east of Dover Road and south of County Road 574. Christmas Lane, named after Lane Wetherington, began as a child’s fascination with the Christmas lights strung on the eaves of their house and grew into a labor of love from him to the Plant City and surrounding
areas’ children. The name and logo, the brainchild of Wetherington’s mother, is embroidered on green shirts and baseball caps worn by the approximately 200 family members and friends, who help carry on the annual tradition by volunteering to string the lights and assemble the dozens of displays beginning Nov. 1, and to run the little slice of the North Pole during December.
Nearly 50,000 visitors come to walk through the forest of giant candy canes, lollipops and gumdrops that would not be complete for the kids without a visit to Santa Claus, who will be available from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. nightly beginning Dec. 19 through Dec. 23, and for one hour on Christmas Eve to share their Christmas wish lists. Some are now bringing their third generation to experience the holiday magic, which for the first time last year included the wedding of Scotty Jenkins and Kendall Burnette, long-time volunteers who met in 2004.
The holiday magic doesn’t come without a price tag to the Wetheringtons. The massive display requires a large amount of power, provided by additional electric generators installed on the family property. It costs approximately $4,000, which has risen considerably compared to $3,000 five years ago. Beginning Dec. 1 through Dec. 28, Christmas Lane is open daily from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. However, if Mother Nature does not cooperate, the lights will not be turned on if it is raining. Admission and parking is free to young and old alike. For those who would like to make a donation, a special box is located near the front entrance. While visitors stroll the grounds and listen to the nightly live entertainment, they can enjoy hot chocolate, coffee and cold drinks. Fresh-made popcorn and cotton candy are also provided.

“It’s been intense,” says Julie McKinney. She is describing the last two years in her and her husband Michael’s lives. Being so fatigued at work that he asked his boss to call 911, Michael endured a series of tests that revealed three blocked arteries. After a stint placement, he needed a triple bypass. While recovering, he had a stroke. Ruling out Parkinson’s, the McKinneys were sent to Boston for testing. Then his legs began swelling with bodily fluids, and a drain was inserted. A lumbar puncture revealed Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy and Lyme disease, and he also had to have his gall bladder removed. Throughout this entire ordeal, Michael has always battled diabetes. Currently, Michael is struggling with cellulitis from his foot to his stomach. He also broke his back, although no one can identify the exact moment. With medical challenges come financial burdens. Losing his job after the heart attack, Michael was added to Julie’s health insurance. She
is a teacher. Even with insurance, his medicine co-pays totaled $600 a month, said Julie. The McKinneys called Countrywide in October to alert them of the situation. The McKinneys said they were unable to get a proper response, except to receive a refusal on a potential investor purchasing their property, which is currently in foreclosure with the mortgage frozen. They have now qualified for a national bailout program and will know more by December. Their house sits empty while they are renting another. Yet, amazingly, through it all, the positive attitude and cheerfulness of the McKinneys cannot be ignored. One meeting and you would never know what they face together. “Even though things aren’t the same, (we) look for the positive and ignore the negative,” said Julie. “If you focus on the negatives, they’ll bring you down.”

Perfect weather for Highlighting history
P i o n e e r Day was a n e v e n t where people cou l d h av e a g ood ti m e and learn a bout P l an t Cit y ’ s h istory. St ory by Cole Do dd
Amidst perfect weather conditions for an outdoor event was one that was ideal for those who enjoy traveling down memory lane. The 31st annual Pioneer Day was held at the Plant City High School Community Center on Nov. 8. The Community Center, which is located at the historical 1914 Plant City High School community center on Collins Street, is packed with the history of Plant City and East Hillsborough. All of what were once classrooms are transformed into museum displays of our yesterdays. Rooms on each of the three floors are designated to showcase a variety of areas.
There is the photography room that is filled with history-rich photos that had captured the life of Plant City and are on display above a myriad of cameras, which are as ancient as the photos. Not to mention there is the Queen Room, which is filled with Strawberry Queen memorabilia. Displays include pictures, calendars, programs and even dresses of former Strawberry Queens dating all the way back to 1930. There is the classroom that was the setting of a scene in the 1991 film My Girl, as well as rooms showcasing arts, archives and antiques. In the archive room, anyone can peruse the many historical articles and literature that relate to not only

Florida’s history, but also states that Florida’s common visitors call home. In the hallways, the glory days are displayed with the photos of PCHS football teams from the 1950s. Floor by floor, history is on display. For Pioneer Day, there was extra history added. One could learn about Morse code, chair caning or many other ancient traditions as there were booths set up inside and out of the community center showing these ways of the past. The H.B. Plant Railroad Historical Society had their model train displays up and running. This was a hit with not just children, as many find miniature towns and trains fascinating. On the bottom floor was where the fourth annual Chocolate Festival was being held. The name alone sounds like a must-see, and it didn’t disappoint. In fact, it was reported that 2008 was the best year to date. Outside of the historical building, the sound of clogging traveled through the crowd. There was much to see. Many gathered to watch the dancing and enjoy the music, while others sat down for an outdoor meal and watched artists as they delicately fine-tuned their work.
To make this a complete family day, there were moonwalks, facepainting and a big slide for the kids. Pioneer Day has something very special about it. It’s probably best described by one word: history. “(Pioneer Day is) an excellent opportunity for our community to come out and experience the history of the city,” said Shelby Bender of the East Hillsborough Historical Society. What started out as a picnic in Gilchrist Park where people reminisced about the past, transformed into Pioneer Day when the picnic was combined with the showcasing of the historic Plant City High School building in 1983. Thirty-one years later, this event is still sure to please. Although it was a beautiful day in perfect conditions, the festival already seemed perfect enough. This family day event comes highly recommended, so be sure not to miss out next year.

thriving art community is important to the cultural health of any city.” It was the Davis’ idea to bring all their artists together for one big revival reception. More than a dozen artists showed, and it was standing room only on a Saturday night. There was music, art and plenty of coffee. The celebration lasted well into the night with every artist and patron coming away with something inspiring.
Local artists showcase their talents St ory by Carolyn M i ller
Tacked upon rustic, century-old brick, lay art of all mediums and disciplines. Some were exceptional realistic pieces, so real you wanted to reach out and take a bite out of the painted apple or touch the tree frog with an expectation that it would be cool and damp. Some wore the regal mask of King Tut or powerful runes. Some resembled the paint-splashed canvas of Jackson Pollock. There was pop art, abstract art, surrealism, all styles, and all tastes were represented. Potters plied their wares and photographers amazed the onlooker with their incredible insight through the camera lens. SoHo? You ask. LA? France? No. Plant City’s Coffee 101 on E. J. Arden Mays Blvd. played host to an artist reception that would rival most big city openings. OK…so you didn’t think there were serious artists in Plant City? Thought it was just Bob Ross wannabe’s? Oh no, the depth of artists within the Plant City community is remarkable.
The art isn’t just strawberry fields and the Strawberry Festival with endless watercolor landscapes of herons on the edge of a reed-filled Florida pond. Whether it’s the historic buildings with Spanish moss, adorned live oaks or the down home feel of Main Street, Americana, artists have come to look on Plant City as a place of inspiration.
Some artists were educated by the best schools the country could offer. Others are self-taught such as Mike Goodwine. “I’m not an artist,” Goodwine says, “I just paint. Consider me raw.” Raw he is, raw talent with an eye for design and color. He paints with the technique of an untrained Rembrandt but with a contemporary twist of a tattoo artist. He said he painted a frog because he is afraid of them. What stares back at the viewer is such a realistic animal that it looks ready to jump from the canvas onto a rain-slick banyan tree. Husband and wife team, Karl and Vicktoria Hanson, displayed their unique art. Karl’s textural draw-
ings are pictures within pictures. Abstracts that reveal more if you look at them harder, reminiscent of Escher, shapes building on shapes with other shapes staring back at you. Vicktoria shows her joy of folk art with her textiles. Her pastor, spiritual “sistah,” is her source of inspiration. Her work is reminiscent of primitive Baptist churches in the backwoods of the South. These were only a few of the talented artists. There was something for every taste. Landscapes in watercolor and oil, scenes of the Florida landscapes and wildlife. The ocean so skillfully painted that you wanted to plunge into the tumultuous sea and let its cool waters flow over you. Paintings on nontraditional surfaces, such as skateboards, were among some of the displays. Look to Coffee 101 not only to support the arts in the Plant City area, but also host even more openings in the future. Here art is not only showcased, but also celebrated. Heather and Jonathan show a commitment to keeping art alive in this challenging but potentially motivating time in our community.

ASSESS YOUR CHILD’S ACADEMIC SUCCESS AT MID-YEAR While the winter holidays offer a great opportunity to relax, they should also be a time to reflect on the progress students have made so far in the school year. Here are some recommendations for assessing your child’s readiness for the months ahead: TAKE SToCK of PRogRESS So fAR Poor grades – and grades that dropped noticeably from the first quarter to the second – mean your son or daughter is heading toward trouble, particularly since future assignments will build on the knowledge and skills your child is supposed to have gained thus far. Test scores are another good indicator. While it’s natural for parents to simply look at the scores for the assurance that students are “measuring up,” it can usually be helpful to look more closely at the areas in which your child excelled or faltered. If your child has scored at the top percentile in reading or mathematics, this should encourage you – and your child’s teachers – to consider Advanced Placement or Merit courses that will make the most of these skills. Poor scores obviously call for extra attention to ensure that your child catches up before the work gets much more difficult. ASSESS THE iMPACT of ATTiTuDE AND STuDy HABiTS Sometimes, bright students get bad grades for behavior-related activities. Does your child hand in his or her homework? Is it correct and on time? Is your child bored with schoolwork, and not paying enough attention? These are not excuses; they are symptoms of different problems. You must identify these issues before you can remedy the problems. Another important factor is your child’s study habits – and the studying environment in your home. Many parents kick off the school year by talking with teachers about how much homework they expect to assign and then set up firm schedules for “homework time” after school and in the evenings. But by mid-year, many of these schedules become a bit more flexible. If your child tends to be self-motivated and is showing strong progress, flexibility can be a good thing. If he or she is faltering, it’s time to put that schedule back in place, and stick to it.

REMEMBER THE PowER of PRAiSE. Finally, make sure your son or daughter knows that you’re a watchdog for both problems and progress, which means that the mid-year check-up should also be an opportunity to acknowledge the special skills and qualities that are unique to your child. Recognizing and nurturing all of these qualities will give your child solid footing for years to come.

Time to pig out and party Pig Jam, an Event for BarbeCue Lovers and the Whole Family, comes once again to Plant City. Story by Krystel Knowles
Barbecue connoisseurs can rejoice, the Plant City Pig Jam is slated for Nov. 22. Every year, the event, which is designed for barbecue enthusiasts, brings many people from Florida and other states to have a day reserved for barbecuing and food. The Pig Jam is celebrating its sixth-year anniversary, and many people will enjoy sharing their incredible talent of being able to cook an incredible, traditional American meal. Not only professionals are able to participate in the cooking contest, but also anybody who wants to try and show their skills on the grill. Even though cooking is not for everybody, people love food, and the Pig Jam has all kinds of food with live entertainment to go with it. The event will take place at the big Randy Larson Softball Four-Plex Stadium on South Park Road in Plant City. The stadium is large enough to fit more than 15,000 attendees and have ample space to walk and enjoy the variety of vendors. The Pig Jam will start at 10 a.m. and end at 5 p.m., seven hours of activities and food tasting all in one open aired location. There is no entry fee and only a mild parking fee. The proceeds will benefit the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund.
Some of the best barbecue in the world can be found at Pig Jam.
Marion Smith, the president of the chamber, said she is looking forward to the event because there is expected to be more than 10,000 enthusiasts. The Pig Jam is one of her favorite events because of the great publicity Plant City receives and the large amount of people who visit the remarkable city.
People from all across America come to Pig Jam.
“It is very exciting to see how many people come to Plant City and get to visit our city,” said Smith. “The only thing we ask people to bring is their appetite to taste good food. Good food always brings people together no matter what.” And good food is what Pig Jam attendees will get. The Kansas City Barbeque Society is nationally renowned because of its barbecue history, and it is the world’s largest organization of barbecue and grilling enthusiasts. The Pig Jam is pleased to be sanctioned by the Kansas Barbeque Society, which has a goal to create the best tasting barbecue nationwide. “”I enjoy tasting all kinds of different ribs,” said Andy Bruce, an aerial photographer who works in Plant City. He started attending the Pig Jam every year since 2005 because he enjoys the fun atmosphere. Bruce found out about the event by walking by the Plant City Chamber of Commerce three years ago. What he loves about the Pig Jam is walking around sampling food and listening to the live entertainment. “Everyone here cooks better than anyplace else. The smaller the stand, the better the food,” said Bruce, and “the prices are very reasonable for the quantity of food you get.” The main event is the barbecue contest, which consists of three different categories: professional level, amateur level and kid’s level. Each level has teams composed of one chief cook with as many assistants as needed. For every team, there will be at least one judge to sample the food. The Pig Jam is expected to have at least 80 teams in different categories, ranging from ribs, beef brisket, chicken and more. The Pig Jam is going to give about $15,000 in instant cash prizes to contestants. The ultimate prize for the competitors is to reach the reserved grand champion.
Awards are given out for best barbecue at the Pig Jam.
There are strict rules and regulations to keep the event and the meat safe. Throughout the entire event, there are people who will check periodically every cooking area to make sure all the rules and regulations are being followed. There are at least 60 judges who are trained to be able to taste and judge the different meats based on the quality of the cooking. Many judges attended the Kansas City Barbeque Society Judging School. Last year, there were more than 53 professional competitors and 29 amateur contestants. The event had approximately 80 judges from across the state. Many of the contestants traveled long distances to be able to participate in the occasion. The event has more than just amazing barbecue. It has games for children and several live bands that enjoy sharing their inspirational music with the Plant City community. There will be a variety of vendors offering several things ranging from new utensils for cooking to cooking tips.

There are all kinds of activities for children at Pig Jam.
A fun aspect of the vendors is that the only form of money is called Pig Bucks, which is like Monopoly money. It gives the event a special quality and down-to-earth atmosphere. Bruce said he enjoys using Pig Bucks because it is fun, and at the end of the day if he has any money left, he gives it away. He said he will attend the event for as many years as the event is still available. “I like the atmosphere and the people are very friendly.” In addition, there will be several televisions throughout the event showing football games so people can enjoy food and sports at the same time. There are also going to be a variety of activities for children to keep them busy and happy.
Even though the Pig Jam is a relatively new event, Smith hopes this event becomes a Plant City tradition for many decades and becomes part of the cities history, especially since Plant City and the Pig Jam have their unique qualities that cannot be found anywhere else. “Once somebody comes to Plant City, they eventually come back whether it is to live or just to visit the historical city,” said Smith. Thank you to this year’s sponsors: Ferman Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge of Plant City, Albertson’s, Tampa Electric, Jarrett Scott Ford, The Hillsborough County Tourist Development Council and South Florida Baptist Hospital.

Businesses win awards at annual banquet The Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce nominated 12 businesses to receive business of the year awards. St ory by Aaron O b erli n
The room was filled with successful people. Some of the people that make Plant City tick. Some of the people striving to bring the community together. The Red Rose Banquet was filled Nov. 6 with several members of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce. Although the food was amazing, it wasn’t the succulent steak or fish that attracted the crowd. It was the chamber’s 2008 Annual Business of the Year Awards Banquet.
Five categories – Growing Business, Small Business, Mid-Size Business, Large Business and Special Business of the Year – were presented. Except for Special Business, each category had three nominees – Special Business had a surprise announcement. And just like years before, five deserving companies received an award. Michael Cameron of Edward Jones won Growing Business of the Year. I am blown away,” said Cameron about receiving the award. “I appreci-

Coleman Davis, owner of Badcock Furniture, said it is the people of Plant City that make the community a great place to live and do business. “What makes our community better than most – and the decision I came to looking out among our friends – is

Ed Verner, owner of the Florida Tree Source, talked about how important some of the other people in his life are during his speech. He also gave kudos to several other businesses in the community.

Cannon Automotive Group, located on South Florida Ave and representing Buick, Cadillac, and Mitsubishi franchises, recently hired five former employees of Bill Heard Chevrolet in Plant City. The Cannon family has owned and operated the dealership for over 44 years. The recent staff addition brings to forty-three the number of service and body shop personnel now employed at Cannon.

“A lot of businesses in Plant City are really worthy (for the Mid-Size Business of the Year Award),” said Verner. “It was just an honor to be nominated.” Sweetbay won Large Business of the Year. Henry Falcon, store manager of Sweetbay, accepted the award. MacDonald Train Center, Inc., at James Ranch, which provides career training for the developmentally
disabled, rounded out the awards winning Special Business of the Year. Jim Freyvogel, CEO and president of MacDonald Train Center, Inc., at James Ranch, said during his acceptance speech, “We promise you this: We will always get better, and we’ll do our best to make James Ranch one of the premier career development centers in the state of Florida.”

The five new employees include service advisor Diane Surrency, technicians Wade Smith, Eli Medina and Mike Ingole; and body shop technician Brandon Pitts. Brandon also specializes in paintless dent repair, a method of repairing dented fenders and body panels that does not require repainting damaged areas. This saves the customer a considerable amount of money in labor costs and paint materials. “It also makes for a beautiful finish,” says Body Shop Manager Paul Weaver. This is an important Consideration for insurance companies as well as customers when deciding where to have

Diane has been in the automotive industry for nearly ten years, with the last five being with the Heard organization; always with excellent customer satisfaction ratings. Wade Smith is a GM World Class Certified Technician; a distinction only a handful of technicians in the entire US have achieved. As a world class certified technician, Wade specializes in medium trucks as well as light trucks and cars. The addition of medium truck led Cannon to install the necessary heavy-duty lift. The Cannons believe these recent additions to the already outstanding service operation will give local Heard Chevrolet customers a good reason to visit Cannon’s south Lakeland location for all their service and body shop needs. They are located 1.5 miles south of the Polk Parkway and work on all makes and models of cars, light duty trucks and now medium duty trucks as well.

Plant City Entertainment has come up with another winner. On Nov. 21 and 22, the Christmas Classic It’s a Wonderful Life will be presented at the Cornerstone Center in downtown Plant City. In our American culture, this classic has become almost as popular as Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”. The story is a natural for a stage adaptation: the saga of George Bailey, the everyman from a small town, whose dreams of escape and adventure have been squashed by family obligation and civic duty. This fine dramatization not only celebrates the faith of the season, it also celebrates the American philosophy of life: hard work, fair play and the love and support of one’s family and community. Get in the true Christmas spirit and make plans to attend this great play.

MARCHING FOR A CAUSE
A rally at Knights Elementary School was done in recognition of National Red Ribbon Week. St ory by Aaron O b erli n
Vices can be detrimental to one’s health, and students at Knights Elementary School recently took an oath to say “no” to drugs – a promise they made to maintain a healthy lifestyle. More than 750 students walked laps around the driveway in front of the school to rally in support of National Red Ribbon Week, an annual celebration bringing millions of people together to raise awareness for alcohol, tobacco, drug and violence prevention. Knights Elementary students appeared passionate about drugs as they continually chanted, “Say no to drugs,” during the rally. “The children all participate, they all

Lisa Carlsen, a guidance counselor at the school, organizes the event, making it “bigger and better every year,” she said.
Carlsen and the rest of the faculty walked with the children, showing the same amount of zeal for the fight against drugs. In addition, some deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and firefighters from the Plant City Fire Department backed the cause.

Elite Home Fitness Get in the Best Shape of Your Life
wE HatE our trainEr. but wE lovE tHE rEsults! Many Americans have the desire to get in shape, but the idea of joining a gym and disciplining themselves to go frequently prevents them from moving forward. Mike Gartz realizes people need convenience and accountability if they are going to live a healthy lifestyle. After 17 years experience in fitness clubs and personal training, Mike decided to start a different style of personal training, which has proven to be successful for many people in Plant City. Elite Home Fitness is a unique style of personal training where the trainer brings the workout to you at home. The program is completely personalized and designed to fit around your schedule. No matter how early or late, you can arrange to have a fitness program brought to your doorstep. Some appointments are as early as 5 a.m., others as late as 9 p.m. The wonderful thing about having a personal trainer come to your house is that you know you cannot make up excuses for not going to work out. If you have a set appointment for someone to come to your home, you will most likely be ready and accountable. When you decide to use Elite Home Fitness, the first thing you will notice is Mike is not just your personal trainer; he becomes a friend. The added benefits of having a fun and up-beat personality as your trainer make the work out less dreadful. Mike will push you to your limit and help you get the results you are looking for. “I can help people get into the best shape of their lives,” said Mike. However, to truly make a strong difference in your life, the changes cannot be solely physical. Although working out is a necessity, Mike also encourages his clients to keep a nutrition diary. He provides his clients with nutrition counseling so they can eat healthy, feel confident and look great. “I’ve helped people lose 60+ pounds,” said Mike. Mike can train all ages, shapes and sizes. You will certainly experience results with the one-on-one personal attention he can provide. Couples-training is also available where Mike can train both husband and wife at the same time so they can get in shape together. In today’s world, everyone is short on time and heavily burdened with stress. This is a great way to relieve stress, gain energy and lose weight without inconveniencing your schedule. The workout usually lasts between 45-60 minutes. Each workout is designed personally for each client, including cardio, toning, strength training and stretching. “The reason I do fitness is because it is a gratifying business,” said Gartz, “I get to help change people’s lives for the better and help them to enjoy life more. It makes you feel good when you help others feel good.” If you have been procrastinating on getting in shape, you are really running out of excuses now. It’s time to make a change in your life and have fun doing it!

JOURNEY PATRIOT PLANT CITY SAVE GAS THANKSGIVING TURKEY WINTER
Christmas Parade Continues with Spirit The Plant City Christmas Parade will return again this year as a joyous occasion. Interview by Brian West • Photos by Suzanne Gallagher Plant City has always been a town to enjoy. Everyone seems to still know each other, smile when they pass on the street and take time to think of others, not just themselves. The Plant City Christmas Parade has been a long standing tradition – one that experienced tragedy last year. But the parade will return this year, and there’s a promise to return some joy to a heartbroken town. As tragic as last year was, there are still children who live here, children who still believe in Santa Claus, and we’re fortunate to still have a group of individuals who want to give their time to make these children smile and believe in the hope and spirit of Christmas. FOCUS spoke with Fran Neilsen, who has been part of a small group that has organized the Plant City Christmas Parade for almost three decades. FOCUS: “How did you get involved in the Plant City Christmas Parade?” Neilsen: “Lani Purcell had been putting on a parade for some time but moved his business to Tampa. I believe it was 1982, because this will be our 26th year. Some businesses checked into putting on the parade, but it just didn’t seem doable at the time. Santa Claus did come to town. He came to McCall Park in the back of a pickup truck and saw children and took their wishes. People were talking about how sad it was that no one picked up the ball. Barbara Kent, with the Courier, wrote an editorial about how Plant City had lost its Christmas spirit. Everyone just felt doom and gloom when that was published. Somebody had to do something. Doing nothing just wasn’t acceptable. There was a small group of us who had worked on a political project earlier in the year, and we thought that maybe we could do something. Come to find out, two of the people in our group had been with the Jaycees. The Jaycees had been sponsors of the parade before Lani Purcell got involved. We all thought, ‘Well why didn’t you tell us that before?’ Marlene Baskin and I did all the paperwork for us to form our group – Plant City Christmas Parade – along with a couple of gentlemen from the Elks Lodge: Frank LaBarbera and Joe Merrin, who took care of the physical lineup of the parade.” november 15 – december 15, 2008 • FOCUS Magazine plant city • 49
Christmas Parade Continues with Spirit FOCUS: “And how was your first year?” Neilsen: “We didn’t know if anyone would even show up. The Shriners said they would send a unit. I remember when they showed up the night of the parade, I was coming up Collins Street to get to my lineup position and saw the Shriners. I waved to them and soon realized that they were coming, and still coming was their lineup, which seemed to be a few city blocks long. I knew that we had one little spot marked for them, so I saw Joe Merrin and said, ‘You’re going to need more than one space for the Shriners.’ And Joe said, ‘What do you mean?’ I pointed to them, and Joe said, ‘Oh my.’ He lined them up and down Palmer Street and gave them a street all their own. At that time, the parade was traveling south – the opposite direction that it does today. We found that it was just too hard to get everyone lined up in the historic section of town, so we changed directions the following year to have the parade travel north like it does today.” FOCUS: “So besides yourself, who else is involved with putting the parade together today?” Neilsen: FrankLababera, Marleen Baskin, Davy Miles, Sharon Moody is our Treasurer, Sue Burt takes care of all the bands, Tom Daramas takes care of the marshalls in the parade and makes sure that everyone participating in the parade is in compliance with our rules and regulations. Together, we are officially the Plant City Christmas Parade, LLC.” FOCUS: “Does the city contract with your organization to put on the parade?” Neilsen: “No, we just do it.” FOCUS: “Are there any fees charged to participants?” Neilsen: “No. There never has been a fee charged to participants, nor have we ever denied participation to anyone. We’re very proud of that. When Joe Merrin was still involved with us, we had quite a few second generation parade organizers. Frankie LaBarbera was one along with all three of Joe Merrin’s sons, Lou and Trish McGrath’s son Mac, along with Davy Miles.” FOCUS: “Will there be any changes with this year’s parade?” Neilsen: “We’re really trying to focus on bringing the spirit of the parade back this year. There is an ordinance that applies to street vendors that will be more strictly enforced this year. The City Commission passed a resolution to not allow beads and candy for the parades, but it is a resolution, not an ordinance. We have decided to allow the distribution of beads and candy in the parade, but in controlled situations. The rules that apply to this are being rewritten. Parade participants will be allowed to distribute beads and candy as they walk behind their parade unit, but not beside the unit. Parades are a time of celebration. They’re festive. If you’re not giving out beads and candy, how festive will a parade be?” FOCUS: “What is the date of the parade for 2008?” Neilsen: “Dec. 5. It is always the first Friday in December. Organizations throughout the state of Florida know that. People have friends and family come from all over the state to watch our parade.”
Fran Neilsen reminisces as she looks at historic pictures of the Christmas Parade at the Plant City Photo Archives.
Fran Neilsen shares cookies with several of Plant City’s grandchildren.
“
We have decided to allow the distribution of beads and candy in the parade… Parades are a time of celebration. They’re festive. If you’re not giving out beads and candy, how festive will a parade be? FOCUS: “What kind of participation are you expecting this year?” Neilsen: “We don’t expect a drop off at all. We’re expecting the same level of turn out as we’ve had in the past. Last year, we had 132 units participating.” FOCUS: “Do you know when the new rules will be available?” Neilsen: “We’re expecting them to be available in the next couple of weeks.” FOCUS: “How does your organization raise funds for the parade if there isn’t a participation fee of some kind?” Neilsen: “We direct mail and send media articles to local businesses and organizations to support the parade. It does cost money to put on a parade of this scale. One time it was the largest attended parade in the state of Florida. Word has spread over the years about the spirit of our parade, and we’re very proud of that. It espouses true family values. When we’re putting together the parade, the persons we’re thinking of are the little ones that still believe in Santa Claus. The Churches really amaze us with some of the things they put together for the parade. They’re just fabulous. Businesses and organizations do whatever they can within their ability to participate.” FOCUS: “So how do you go about soliciting support for the parade?” Neilsen: “We put a notification in the local papers, and we send out letters to local businesses who have supported the parade and new businesses for additional support. Applications for the parade are always mailed to the participants from the previous year and are also available at the Chamber of Commerce.” FOCUS: “Who has been in the parade the longest?” Neilsen: “There are several that come to mind: The City of Plant City, Jackie’s Dance Studio, Patrick Patriots, the Plant City High School Marching Band,
”
Tomlin, Marshal, Turkey Creek, the Lions Club, the Optimist Club, Sunshine State, The Florida Strawberry Festival Queen and Court, Little Miss Plant City, Junior Miss Plant City, the Junior Women’s Club, Junior Elite Women’s Club and a host of others.”
FOCUS: “What are some of the more unique entries you’ve had throughout the years?” Neilsen: “One year, Vic Larsen, who has been entering his middle school band for years, asked if we we’re only interested in school bands, or could any band enter. We said any band, and he asked if we’d like to have a junkyard band. We said, ‘Absolutely.’ Everyone loved them. Another year we had Santa Claus arrive in the Mel’s Hotdogs Weiner-mobile. That was pretty unique. On a lighter note, there’s been a kennel club, the Samoyed Fanciers of Florida who’ve had a doggie Santa pulled by a sleigh of Samoyeds. The dogs and their owners come from throughout our state. The participants are extremely creative.” FOCUS: “What is your favorite memory of the parade?” Neilsen: “There are several. A few years ago, one of the churches had a nativity scene with a real infant Christ, and a hush fell over the crowd as they passed. The bottling company, Owens-Illinois, in Lakeland, used over 200 recycled bottles to make a Christmas tree, which they illuminated from the inside. It was beautiful. The community’s spirit makes it all possible. Our first year, we weren’t aware that we were responsible for contacting the railroad. Instead of the news headlines being about Plant City regaining its spirit, it was the slice through Christmas Parade.” Neilsen and the rest of the group want to return the spirit of Christmas to Plant City once again. The best thing locals can do as a town is attend the parade and enjoy it, and each other, like they have for years.

The UPS Store has been doing business in Plant City for many years. The business, formerly known as Mailboxes Etc., was purchased by UPS several years ago.
even removable peel-n-stick for your walls and windows. The applications are endless. The UPS Store offers traditional shipping for both UPS and the USPS.
The store is still a franchise and today is owned by Bradley and Debbie Siebenthal. The Siebenthals bought the business in 2004 and moved here from Tampa with their family. Debbie works at the store full time, along with Dorothy Rogers, the store manager who has been with the business for eight years, and Penny Thorburn, who has been with the store for a year. Debbie and her staff work hard to increase business by growing their customer base. She’s brought in some new additions to the business – offerings that were not part of Mailboxes Etc.
Siebenthal was quick to point out that they now have a pack-n-ship promise, which means that as long as the UPS Store packages someone’s item for shipping, they will be refunded the complete costs for shipping and packing without issue, should any damages occur. Of course, with the store packing the items, the potential for damage is minimal.
Siebenthals’ newest offering is a photo-zoomer, which allows them to instantly print in large formats up to 3 feet by 8 feet. It can print direct to substrates of canvas, poster paper, banner material, blueprint paper and
A list of the other services offered by the store include packing, faxing, business cards, bulk shredding, passport photos, notary service, document archiving, digital printing from most print media and, most recently, medical prescription pads for doctors. They’re tamper-resistant as regulated by the government, and that is a new offering. They also retained the mailbox service

from Mailboxes Etc. Siebenthal said, “We’re kind of a one-stop shop for sales people and those who work out of their home. We’re always focused on customer service. Clients who use our mailbox service often call to ask if something has been delivered; maybe that check they’ve been waiting for. We’re able to check their box for them and save them the time and trip here to check for themselves.” There are a lot of smaller businesses that use the mailbox service because they don’t want to use their home address. The address for the mailbox at the UPS Store reads more like a typical business address, which brings credibility to a business that may be working out of their home or using a post office box. The store sees a mixed variety of customers. More than half of the store’s customers are regulars. “Everybody has a long to-do list, and we try to help them cross off as many things as possible in one shop,” said Siebenthal.. Many regular customers have instore house accounts, making it
easy for them to just drop their items and go. They know the staff will take care of everything, saving them time. As you might imagine, they’ve shipped some interesting things during the years. Some of the more unique items they’ve shipped include a seven-foot-tall mannequin, the skull bones of a cow, a McDonald’s hamburger was shipped overnight to California, and a lot of tires and car parts sold on eBay. For those shipping items for the holidays, Siebenthal offers these tips: pack it tight, always use a sturdy box, know the limitations of your carriers, ship early, ship to military APO’s and FPO’s in November and most carriers offer insurance and tracking. “Following these tips will help ensure that your loved ones receive their gifts on time and intact. Remember, don’t shop till you drop and then pack out of whack,” said Siebenthal. “Happy holidays.”

Consider Financial Gifts to Family s u b m i t t e d b y e dwa r d jo n es
At this time of year, you may be thinking about finding the “perfect” gifts for various family members. You can find any number of thoughtful presents, but if you’d like to give something that can have an impact long after the holiday season is finished, consider making a financial gift. You could, of course, just write a check. But you may be able to do more for your intended recipients by finding a more creative gift. Here are a few possibilities: – Stocks — Many people have preferences for products made by certain companies — and they may well enjoy owning the stocks of those firms. Why not surprise your family members with a few shares of these stocks? If you decide to give shares from your own portfolio, you’ll need to know what you originally paid for the stock, how long you’ve held it and its fair market value at the date of the gift. Recipients of your gift will need this information to determine gains or losses if they decide to sell the stock. You’ll also need to determine if you have to pay gift taxes. You can give up to $12,000 per year, free of gift taxes, to as many people as you want; over your lifetime, you can give up to $1 million without incurring gift taxes. – Contributions to Section 529 plans — Over the past several years, college tuition costs have increased significantly. If you have a child (or grandchild) who will be headed off to college in a few years, you may want to open a Section 529 college savings plan. The contribution limits are typically quite high for this type of account, and your contributions may be tax-deductible if you are participating in your own state’s plan. Plus, your earnings and withdrawals will be exempt from federal taxes as long as the money goes toward paying qualified higher education expenses. (However, withdrawals used for any other expenses may be subject to federal, state and penalty taxes.) – Contributions to an IRA — Many people don’t fully fund their IRA each year — so any help you can give toward that goal will be important. While you can’t contribute directly to someone else’s IRA, you can write a check to the recipient for that purpose. For the 2008 tax year, the IRA contribution limit is $5,000 ($6,000 for investors who are 50 or older). And the deadline for making contributions for 2008 isn’t until April 15, 2009. – Charitable gifts — You may want to make a financial gift to a charitable organization in the name of a loved one. If this person supports the work done by the charitable group, he or she will greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness. Furthermore, you’ll get an immediate tax deduction for your gift, as long as the group has received 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. By making any of these gifts, you’ll brighten your family members’ holidays — and you’ll know that your generosity truly had an impact on their lives.

Mike and Mari Larkin are the owners of Larkin Financial Coaching.
Larkin Financial Coaching Mike and Mari Larkin spend their time helping people get on a prosperous financial track. Background: We have been married for 25 years. We have 3 children who are married, and we now have 2 grandbabies. We have lived and worked in the Plant City area for the past five years. We both have been helping people to manage their money and get on budgets for more than 15 years, first as Crown Financial Ministry Money Map Coaches, and more recently as Dave Ramsey Certified Counselors. Our passion is to see people experience financial freedom that spills over into all areas of their lives.
Successes: We jokingly say we aren’t marriage counselors, but we have helped many couples strengthen their marriage by getting their financial house in order. Some couples are confessing about debt to their spouse for the first time, while others are not even communicating at all. We have seen couples who felt hopeless leave our office with confidence believing that they can start again and change their future and destiny. Our goal is to help our clients each uniquely with the best possible service we can give them.
Aspirations: We not only work on the expense side of life and business with budgeting and getting out of debt, but also with the income side that encompasses career development and finding the work you love.
Future (what’s next?): We want people to know we don’t just handle money issues, although most issues of life revolve around money. We also do life and career coaching as well as business start-up coaching. We plan to start offering workshops for the public to attend, as well as starting a radio talk show soon. If you feel you could benefit from what we offer, then give us a call to schedule a free, no-risk, 30-minute consultation at (813) 473-3963.
Inspirations: Larry Burkett started this desire in us to help people manage their money more than 20 years ago, and currently we’d have to say it is Dave Ramsey. We know there are many people that need help locally and don’t know where to turn to for unbiased, objective help, and we want to be there for them. 60 • FOCUS Magazine plant city • november 15 – december 15, 2008

CRISIS EVENTS AND THE DOW Our country has faced numerous challenges and crisis over the years, with many of them negatively impacting the economy and stock market. When events like this occur, your initial reaction may be to make changes to your portfolio. However, we believe it’s a mistake to change your investment strategy in reaction to crisis events. The table below emphasizes the importance of maintaining a long-term perspective in times of crisis. Sources: Ned Davis/Edward Jones *The 22, 63, 126 and 253 day rate-of-change is calculated from the last day in the reaction dates column. The first date in the reaction dates column indicates the start of the market reaction or the trading day prior to the event. Past performance is not an indication of future results. URGENT MESSAGE: Contrary to what the media would have your believe, Home LOANS are still available and perfect credit with big down payments are NOT REQUIRED My husband Randy and I were referred to Nate when we began the search for our home- we were told he was the best! We were in our forties and this would be our first home purchase so we were very “nieve” about the whole process. Nate understood this and he took us under his wing and made sure all transactions went smoothly from the beginning to the end. We let him take control with peace of mind that everything was being taken care of promptly, accurately and with true honesty. Nate was always just a phone call away with all my many questions and just a quick glance and a nod at the closing table was often what I needed to know that things were ok and proceeding as Nate had expected them to. I would never use anyone else for a home mortgage and highly recommend him to everyone. Nate was and is the best. Thanks so much! Randy & Sharon Maxwell - Plant City, FL

Holiday decorations to be put up at entrances s ubmitted by natali e s w eet
It’s the holiday season and soon the neighborhood entrances will once again be lit up and decorated. The master association will judge two separate categories, large and small entrances that are the best decorated. Prizes will be awarded. First place will receive $150, second $100, third $50 and honorable mention will receive $25. Talk to your neighborhood board if you are interested in helping or have ideas on decorating your entry. The Walden Lake Community As-
sociation Board has approved the construction of a dog park at the end of the Polo Field nearest to Timberlane. Several activities are planned to obtain the construction costs independent of any due revenues from the association. Activities include a golf tournament, which is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 21, sponsorships from local businesses and individuals, and the sale of commemorative pavers. For additional information about how you can help, please call Stephanie Springborn at (813) 752-9825 or

Dick Shiller at (813) 719-8677. The planning committee has received a bid for the construction of the office building and will be meeting to bring recommendations back to the board on how to proceed. The homeowner’s association has hired a receptionist for the office who will work from 9 a.m to 1 p.m., which will free up Marlene to work full time on deed restriction compliance. Marlene is now handling 10 subdivisions, and that has become a full-time job for her. Jan Griffin asked me to remind everyone to PLEASE be courteous and clean up after your pets. I can understand the request because while taking a nice brisk walk around the lake recently, I managed to put my sneaker in some dog droppings that were left right in the middle of the walking path. It was not pleasant! If you don’t have a baggie with you, you can pick it up with
a leaf and throw it into the bushes, please! I hear there is going to be a HUGE New Year’s Eve celebration at the club this year. There will be multiple rooms opened with live bands, food and of course the champagne will be flowing. Watch for more details. Walden Lake Golf and Country Club is an important part of our community, and now is the time to join while the club is still waiving initiation fees. For information on membership dues, you can call Michelle Newsome at (813) 752-1171. She asks that if you are interested in holding an event or golf tournament at the club, then please call her at extension 222.

The bailout summed up s u b m i t t e d b y n at e dav i s
Many people would like to know what exactly the bailout is about and how it affects them. I am going to give you a simplified explanation: Banks loan money and earn profits off the interest that they collect. Since a bank only has a certain amount of money to lend, when they run out of funds, they can no longer make loans and earn interest income from the new loans. This is why a secondary market was created a long time ago. The secondary market is where companies – Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for example – would purchase loans from banks freeing up the banks’ funds so that they can continue to lend. The purchasers of the loan would then receive the interest income off the loan, but would pay the bank some extra money above and beyond the loan balance for the right to collect the interest income.

This process occurs again and again in the secondary market. This is why the lender that you make your mortgage payment to will sometimes change (the loan was sold). The amount of your payment will not change, only to whom you make your check payable. When a customer goes to a bank or a mortgage broker for financing, they are a part of the primary market – not the secondary market. Again, when the lender sells their mortgage to another investor to free up cash, this is the secondary market. It is here where the liquidity crisis lies. Due to a large number of mortgages not performing – foreclosure, no payment, bankruptcy, etc – the investors are no longer as interested in buying mortgages from lenders and banks. This puts the banks and lenders in an extended state with their funds, and they do not have new funds to loan out. This is what you hear about in the news. Tight credit markets, the credit crunch, Captain Crunch, Yoo-hoo and a moon pie, whatever you want to call it, it stinks. The bailout was designed for the U.S. Government to purchase mortgages from banks and lenders or now (this stuff changes daily) partner with some banks to provide additional capital to lend. So enjoy the chaos and remember that while many banks may be stretched on funds, your best lenders are still liquid and are loaning money even in today’s market. It seems that everyone is willing to give an opinion about the housing market these days. From both ends of the spectrum, everyone agrees that brighter days are ahead, it’s just a matter of when. There are too many factors to mention in this short article that will either drive the success of market recovery or prolong the doldrums. What I have seen lately is certainly good for our local market. Buyers, for the most part, are trying to buy. Offers to purchase are on the rise, but negotiations are challenging. Why? Many buyers and sellers are not realistic in their expectations to buy or sell in a depreciating market. Who knows how long the recovery will take, but it will recover. Healthy housing sales will drive improvements to the economy.
Sellers: 1. De-clutter your home’s interior and exterior. It should be clean and inviting. 2. Make necessary repairs around the house (better yet, get a home inspection). 3. If you can afford to sell, then set your price below your competition (ask a realtor, get a market analysis). 4. Expect to adjust your price after three - four weeks if there is no activity. Be bold in your price adjustments. A “drama” price will create energy, energy creates traffic, traffic creates offers. 5. Don’t reject the first offer – negotiate. It may be the only offer you get. Buyers: 1. Research the neighborhood/town in which you want to buy. A local realtor or chamber of commerce can provide Web sites and resources. 2. Research market values – know what buyers have paid in the past six months in a given area. 3. Get your financing in order before you look. Get pre-qualified or pre-approved for a mortgage. 4. Be realistic in your expectations. Stay within your range of affordability.

Wouldn’t if be wonderful to open the newspaper and read some good news about the economy or the real estate market? Unfortunately, good new doesn’t sell newspapers! Contrary to what you may read in the news, all is not doom and gloom! Homes in our local market are selling, especially homes in the lower price ranges. And now perhaps the biggest news........ banks are actually still loaning money! While it is true that banks no longer loan money to folks with bad credit, (this is actually a good thing) there are still many programs available for first time buyers and for buyers with little money to put down. Over the last few months, we have been able to get many buyers approved with very little difficulty; even those with less than perfect credit. Interest rates are still at historically low levels, so don’t believe everything you read in the doom and gloom newspapers! Thinking of buying or selling? With interest rates down, and with prices still at very reasonable levels, now is a great time to buy or sell! No, the sky is NOT falling!! Please call us here at Team Wainoris today to see how we can help you! *Please consult your tax advisor for your individual tax considerations.

Shooting the lowest nine-hole score in school history, a 32 in a match against Bloomingdale, Kyle Martin has never failed to make his Plant City High School golf team proud. Martin is a senior this year and has been a starting player on the team for all four of his high school years. For the past two years, he has taken the No. 1 player position and is also this year’s team captain. But making the best score record is not the only reason why Martin is the athlete of the month. He is also a leader with a strong work ethic. Martin practices every day after school for three to four hours and even longer on the weekends. He believes he has made himself a great player through his consistent practices and his ability to focus completely on the ball and his swing during a game. PCHS golf team coach Gary Brady said, “He practices as hard as anyone I’ve ever seen and sets a good example for the other teammates.”
Senior golfer sets standards St ory by Kasey Mi ller 90 • FOCUS Magazine • november 15 - december 15, 2008
As captain of the golf team, Martin thinks of himself as a leader and a role model for his younger teammates. He is able to help them in areas of their game with which they might have trouble. “I think that his leadership and work ethic skills are two things that stood out and helped the team to grow,” said Douglas Jones, a math teacher at PCHS.
Growth is something that the PCHS golf team needs – there are only two seniors on the team this year, no juniors. Jones said he hopes the younger players will follow Martin’s “leadership skills and work hard like Kyle did.“ The road to Martin’s leadership started when he first picked up a club when he was approximately 2 years old. His dad and grandparents initially got him started in the sport and have supported him throughout the 15 years he has played the game. They helped put him in certain tournaments and have bought much of his equipment. Currently, he plays on the Florida State Golf Association Junior tour and is a member of the Greater Tampa Junior Golf Association. Not only has he been named First Team All-County, but he has also made First Team All-Western Conference the past two years. “He is definitely one of the best players I have ever coached and one of the top five players ever to play for Plant City High School,” said Brady. In the future, Martin plans to go to college with the sport and hopes to one day turn it into a career as a professional golfer.

players and teams, and he loved it. Word began to spread and today he has a growing clientele that keeps him busy most afternoons and weekends. “This is something that I love to do,” said Persails. “I want to see as many young men as possible excel in baseball. I want to take what I have learned and help teach them to be winners in life.” Mark has formed an organization called Baseball Heaven. This organization has three functions. First of all, through Baseball Heaven, Persails will continue to provide individual and team lessons, camps and clinics.
Heaven in Plant City
Former Professional Player brings quality baseball to Plant City. St ory by Jackson Sm ith
Mark Persails has arrived in heaven… baseball heaven. Well, at least that is what he calls Plant City. You see, when Persails retired after a 12-year career in professional baseball, he moved to Plant City to begin a new phase in life teaching others the baseball skills that enabled him to excel at what he calls “the greatest game in the world.” An All-State selection in football, basketball and baseball at Millington High School in central Michigan, Persails was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1994 and throughout time developed a fastball that reached 98 mph on his way to becoming one of the top pitching prospects in the minor leagues with the Tigers and the Houston Astros. As a professional, he was named to three All-Star teams, won four championship rings, pitched a nohitter, and was named the No. 3 prospect in the Astros’ organization
in 2000. Albert Pujols, one of baseball’s greatest hitters, was among the countless strikeout victims of Persails.
Secondly, he will personally coach two travel ball teams. The Saints will be made up of boys 16 and younger, and the Angels will be the 18-andunder team. Mark is also a scout for the Cleveland Indians and through a renewed association with Bruce Fields, one of his former managers that is the current hitting director for player development with the Indians, it is his hope that the Angels will become the scout team of the Cleveland Indians.
Thirdly, Persails has formed an alliance with Chuck White, owner of the International Baseball Championships (IBC.) Together they will stage six tournaments here in Plant City during the next year that will bring in teams from all across the state. Each tournament will provide an economic boost to the local economy. The first tournament – IBC Central Florida Baseball Heaven Wood Bat Classic – will take place Nov. 1416 at Mike Sansone Park and MLK Park. Travel teams 18-and-under and 16-and-under will be competing. The second tournament – IBC Baseball Heaven Christmas Championships – will be held Dec. 26-28 and will involve teams from the age of 9 through 18. Persails hopes Baseball Heaven will one day be able to have an enclosed facility near Mike Sansone with batting cages, pitching mounds and weight room. Anyone interested in Baseball Heaven can call (609) 2046110.

In addition, he has also developed lasting friendships along the way. One of his closest friends in baseball is his former roommate Brad Lidge – Philadelphia Phillies save leader and World Series standout. After injuring his shoulder (torn labrum and rotator cuff), Persails moved to Plant City, a community 10 miles from Lakeland where he previously attended spring training with the Tigers. “I felt drawn to Plant City. The smalltown atmosphere reminded me of my hometown in Michigan,” said Persails. It was unclear at first whether he could rehabilitate his shoulder to mount a comeback, so Persails began giving baseball lessons to local youth

Riding the Wave
Seven-year-old Joey Putnall Places Third in Surfing Nationals S t o ry by J o e Bo w l e s
Joey Putnall is a veteran of competitive surfing. That may not seem like an unusual statement to make, but it is when you are only seven years old. Unusual isn’t even the right word to use for Joey; remarkable is a better adjective to describe what he has already accomplished, and where he is headed.
age of 2. Surfing was the next step when the love for riding a wave was instilled in Joey by his grandfather Bob Clark, an avid surfer himself. By the age of 4, Joey was on a surfboard, and a year later, he was competing in tournaments.
Joey recently placed third in the SuperMenehune division of the Amateur Athletic Union’s National Surfing Championships held at Cocoa Beach from Oct. 24-26. Joey was among more than 135 surfers from all across Florida, the Bahamas and Puerto Rico that competed in seven age groups from the Super-Menehune (10 and younger) to the Super Men’s (46 and older).
He’s a second grader in Mrs. Jennifer Morales’ class at Jackson Elementary school. He is a good student. He also plays the guitar, rides his skateboard and loves to fish, but surfing is his passion.
Joey’s love for the water began shortly after learning to walk. At the age of 15 months, he learned to swim at the Plant City Family YMCA, and he began going to the beach at the

Brevard County,” said Clark. Even when they’re not at the beach, Joey keeps his upper body in shape by paddling around the swimming pool on his surfboard. Joey has been among the top finishers in many other events leading up to the nationals. In March, he placed third in the Rip-Pics Spring Classic, and in May he was awarded second place in the Pineapple Surf Contest. Both events were held in Cocoa Beach.
To stay competitive, Joey has to spend a lot of time on his board.
Joey’s success has brought him a little notoriety in the amateur surfing community. Joey is now sponsored by Xcel Wetsuits, Surftech Surfboards and Surfco Hawaii. The latter has also provided Joey with his own profile page and his nickname, The Ripper.
“Just about any day that we have off, we’re at the beach. Joey has surfed everywhere. He’s been to California and Hawaii, but mostly we surf in

hard because he knows what he wants to do with his life.” Joey is a tough competitor, and he has to be. “Out in the ocean, you can’t be scared,” Clark said. “Surfing is not like a team sport where you have other teammates around or where mom is sitting right there. You’re out there all by yourself. You can’t afford to be afraid.” Although Joey doesn’t remember the first time that he surfed, he does remember the feeling he had. “I liked (surfing) right away. I think we were at Cocoa Beach Pier,” said Joey. He may not remember much about his first experience, but he has been making memories ever since.

sherry nueesch themselves by enhancing their sense of competence and control over their lives. Simply taking a pill is passive. People who exercise have a far greater sense of mastery over their low moods and gain a greater sense of accomplishment. Exercising for depression gives people more self esteem and confidence because they are able to do it for themselves. Exercising and losing weight is the greatest mood enhancer I know for women. People should see how happy women are when they step on the scale and it is going down and not up for a change. That is a really delightful feeling that brings happiness like nothing else for women. It is a joyous event to watch for sure. Exercise has been shown to work much faster than medication. Most people report that their moods start to get better within the first 10 minutes of exercising. The benefits that people experience from exercising for depression include: increased mood, less anxiety, less depression, less anger, less fatigue, less confusion, less stress. If you watch a lot of news and are caught up in the current economic drama in the world, you need to exercise.

Ask any American the generic question, “What hurts?” and most would say in unison, “Depression hurts.”
severe depression. Some current research suggests exercise can actually change brain chemistry.
The same thing has been heard on TV so many times. I myself can truthfully say that depression does hurt. I suffered from depression for several years. Depression is something I have first-hand knowledge of.
One recent study found that a good workout can boost someone’s level of serotonin, a brain chemical that is linked to mood. Intense exercise can also stimulate the productions of endorphins, natural painkillers that can sometimes make people feel euphoric. I have made the comment many times to the ladies at Curves: “If we could make a pill that makes people feel as good as a vigorous workout makes them feel, then we could make billions.” A 2005 Yale University study found that exercise increases neurogenesis – the growth of neuronal brain cells – and stymies the effects of aging and depression.
When you are down in that dark hole, it is hard to climb out, especially by yourself. My depression went away almost miraculously when my doctor put me on thyroid medicine. For women especially, getting their thyroid hormones checked is very important if they are depressed or suddenly become depressed. Correcting hormonal imbalances is a must for mental health. Faith, religion, meditation, friends, family and counseling also help. Getting off sugars and starches and cleaning up your diet is extremely important. Researchers are now saying regular exercise is just as effective as medication for most people who suffer from mild to even
There are social benefits to working out with a group. Exercise helps lift the sense of isolation people can develop when they are depressed. Exercising with friends helps to bring back connection to other people. Getting stronger and staying in shape makes people feel better about

The holidays are coming, and for many people that is a stressful and depressing time. So be proactive and chase away the blues before it gets a grip on you. What the world needs now more than ever is for us to keep our little lights shining. When we feel good it is contagious to those around us. Feeling good is our birthright. We earned it just by being born a child of God. So if your little light is not shining as bright as it could be, then get up and move. Get those feel-good hormones pumping throughout your brain. On the way to the gym, try counting your blessings. That is a mental exercise that is sure to elevate your mood. What we pay attention to in life is what multiplies. Want more of what makes you feel good? Be grateful, live in an attitude of gratitude. Make everyday Thanksgiving Day. If you are still feeling blue, then try smiling for 10 straight minutes. After a couple of minutes, you will start to giggle because it is impossible to think negative with a smile on your face. So here’s me smiling at ya.

An athletic young man Bill was. He was captain of the Plant City High School football team, outstanding fielder on the baseball team, an allround athlete, good student, organizational leader, and beloved by all. Bill Parolini was born March 20, 1932, and lived many full years – as a young bachelor, an Air Force officer, a husband, and a father of five vivacious children and grandfather of six. He was a dedicated man to his God, his family and his community through all his years. Bill passed away November 2, 2008. He will not be forgotten. As many of our ancestors did, Bill Parolini’s father, Eugene, held a number of jobs. He and his wife, Susan, ran the Friendly Korner Grocery at the intersection of S.R. 39 and Knights-Griffin Road. That’s where Bill grew up, just across the grassy strip from the school’s playground, and the wetlands and the stream where Bill and the area kids played.
At one time, in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Eugene also ran the barbershop on Reynolds Street, in the back portion of the Hillsboro State Bank building. Bill frequently roamed the alleyway between the bank and the Hotel Colonial while waiting for this father to close the barbershop. An adventurous young man, Bill enjoyed the outdoors and was a marksman with his rifle, although, he said, it took 60 well-placed shots to kill one large alligator with his .22. One of his boyhood friends was Jim Redman, who was also his fishing buddy, as well as football and baseball teammate. After his years in the public schools in Plant City, a graduate of Plant City High School Class of 1950, Bill went into the business world for a short while and then joined the military. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 and progressed through officer training and was promoted to lieutenant. Bill served four years with the United States Air Force Material Air Transportation

Strawberry Shortcake in February 1999, and they served in the same capacity for the Women’s Pro Softball League All-Star Game in July 1999.
Bill went to work for Clifford Hardee at Plant City Steel, which was then a rapidly expanding business. He later joined the O’Neal Steel Company and worked there until retirement.
Bill began volunteering in 2000 at the Plant City Photo Archives, where he served on the advisory council and was in charge of external exhibits. He assisted in the construction of the new Photo Archives office and gallery space in 2005 and directed all external exhibits set up at off-site locations. Bill and Mary Jane also served as host and hostess for the Photo Archives annual gala, An Evening of Picture Perfect Memories. Bill Parolini served the Plant City community well and graciously, and the community will long remember him, his sense of humor, and his willingness to do what it takes to get a job done. God bless.
His community interest kept Bill busy, and he volunteered for the Rotary Club, St. Clement Catholic Church’s Strawberry Shortcake booth and the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce. In 1997, Bill and a couple others from the chamber cleaned out the historic Union Station (“The Depot”) and began the restoration process – filling several roll-off dumpsters and practicing some carpentry. The depot opened in December as the chamber’s Welcome Center and has been the hub of downtown activities since. Bill and his friend, Tim Martin, were the logistics and operations directors for the World’s Largest

Pet Food fit for a pet? s ubmitted by al ru ec hel
Don’t get me wrong. I love pets. Our family has owned maybe a dozen cats throughout our 32 years of marriage. And, yes, we do pamper and love them, and they appear in all of our Christmas and birthday party photos. So you know they are special. But I do draw the line when it comes to their food. We do not cook special meals for our cats and dogs. They do not get table scraps, or at least they’re not supposed to. It’s not like the days on the farm when my grandmother would feed them gravy and leftovers mixed with bread every night. I don’t think they ever bought any dry food, and certainly not any canned food. And all the farm dogs and cats were as healthy as cows and nearly as big.
So I get this ad from Eukanuba about their new naturally wild dog foods: New Zealand Venison and Potato Formula, North Atlantic Salmon and Rice Formula, and Country-grown Turkey and Multigrain Formula. Good grief. Whatever happened to just plain old dog food made from whatever it is they make dog food from? These ad folks are geniuses at making you feel guilty. “Your dog gives 100 percent. Return the favor.” Sure, 100 percent of sleeping all the time, doing her business on the neighbors lawn. She is especially skilled in the art of raising fleas. Tell me your dog food kills fleas, and you’ve got a customer for life.

“Mother Nature wants the best nutrition for her dogs. Naturally, so do we.” Can we leave Mother Nature out of this argument? I was perfectly fine with the regular Eukanuba that I started buying 17 years ago because it contained less filler than regular dog food. Less filler translates into less cleanup and smell in my backyard. Oh, I’ve been found out. And why the emphasis on New Zealand venison anyway? I can’t imagine my dog tracking down a deer much less jumping on it and killing it. And what’s wrong with the overpopulated deer in the Midwest or Upstate New York? It’s bad enough we have to import oil for our cars, but now deer for our dogs? My wife and I took a cruise to Alaska a couple of years ago, so I can kind of understand the North Atlantic Salmon. Yep, the ad guys grab you again. Wow, that stuff is expensive in the stores. I don’t think Fido will be getting restaurant-grade salmon at nine bucks a pound.
Let’s face it. This company wants you to drool when you see their ads. They want to make YOU hungry. They know the dog doesn’t give a hang as long as her bowl is full – all the time. And why country-grown turkey? What’s wrong with citygrown turkey? Why not those crazy wild birds you see roaming up in the East Lake Woodlands part of Pinellas County off McMullen-Booth Road? Folks are always trying to get rid of them anyway. Make them a gourmet treat, and your problem is solved. Just give me good ole regular, won’t make-my-dog-fat, medium kibble, smells like a grain barn, made out of animal protein or whatever dry dog food. She eats it. She likes it. When she stands up on all fours and goes on strike then, maybe, I’ll think about this “wild” dog food. Unless you give me another $10-off coupon, I do have my price.

Marriage … what is marriage, why was it formed, and how do you SURVIVE it?
Thank you & Merry Christmas From, Justin, Ashley, Adrienne, Deloris, Leslie, Elaine and Dan Dan Lariscy 104 • FOCUS Magazine • november 15 - december 15, 2008
From the very beginning, “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’ For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh,” according to the book of Genesis 2:18-24. Marriage is hard. I recently saw a movie called Fireproof.” In the movie, a couple’s marriage is about to go up in flames and struggling with every issue and problem one could possibly encounter in a marriage, when one of them is dared to really learn how to love the other. The dare is in a 40-day challenge book called “The Love Dare.” Everyday is a dare to love the way that God loves us.
I am currently on day five and have already experienced a deeper relationship with my friends and family, but first and foremost, the Lord. I have learned so far how to love patiently, kindly, unselfishly – this one is hard – thoughtfully and unrudely. I am so excited to learn how to make my love fireproof. I dare each and every one of you struggling in your marriage, or just searching to really learn how to love, to try this dare for 40 days. God has been changing my whole world around revealing the secret of love to me. “Now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love,” reads 1 Corinthians 13:13.

This Moe guy really knows how to do Southwest, and Moe’s Southwestern Grill is highly recommended for great food and a fun atmosphere.
Another thing that separates Moe’s from the rest is the fact that among the ice-cold refreshments is bottleneck beer. There is also the choice of fountain drinks or bottled water.

With additions like Carrabba’s, Panera Bread and Chili’s, Plant City has been expanding its list of franchises tremendously for the past five years. The newest addition to the family is Moe’s Southwest Grill.
So why are they so big? A Moe’s employee said, “We ain’t making egg rolls baby.”

Also, Moe’s provides great music with classics ranging from the ‘40s to the ‘80s. The unique thing about the music that many do not realize is that every song played is to pay tribute to those that have passed. Because of that, most of the music played

entertainment waited in the wings as Marilyn warmed up the audience. He was “all shook up” as he too came all the way from Orlando, but fresh from overseas. Elvis was a huge hit in Japan. “They were fascinated by my sideburns,” he said. That can’t be the only thing. This Elvis could get any girl’s heart to thumpin’ as he sang “Viva Las Vegas.” When asked what his favorite Elvis song was he said, “It’s ‘Midnight,’ but I won’t perform it.” Why? He says, “Nobody knows it and they would be like, is that really an Elvis song? Or did someone else sing it?”

Besides Las Vegas, Marilyn Monroe, Sammy Davis, Jr., Neil Diamond, Connie Francis and Elvis all have a city in common: Plant City. Once more, the Red Rose Inn and Suites played host to a troupe of fantastic performers from all across the country. Legends Entertainment is a tribute to some of the greats in a bygone era. But for just a moment, they were alive and well and in their prime in Plant City. Batista Medonia, Sr. and Mrs. Evelyn Medonia, owners of the Red Rose Inn and Suites, attended this gala affair. Mrs. Evelyn wore a smashing red sequined gown just for the occasion. Ladies throughout the dining room showed that diamonds really are a girl’s best friend. With the Red Rose Inn and Suites already dressed to the nines for the

Marilyn was fresh from the Orlando area, but she has performed throughout the world. Her most memorable time was Japan. “They really love me there,” she said. Of course they would. This nearly 5 foot 10 inch blonde bombshell, wearing her signature pink satin gown with bow and opera gloves to match, would send any man into a tizzy. She said in Germany, she stayed at the Skytower Club in Frankfurt, “It looks like a flying saucer on top.” She giggles. Originally, she came from a small town in Illinois, “I’m from Assumption, Ill., you know. It’s so small they assume it’s there.” “Elvis is in the building,” came the announcement as the next performer

Keel and Curley has plenty of space for people to enjoy wine at Uncorked. Photo by Pixel This Photography
Open up a Bottle of Fun Ke e l a n d Cu r ley W in ery pre s e nt s Uncor k e d. St ory by Kevin Tall
A few miles outside of civilization, where field runs into field, there is one property in particular. Amid 26 acres of blueberries sits an ominous steel building painted white with blue trim. Inside is a room where a man makes magic and puts it in a bottle to be drank. Welcome to the Keel and Curley Winery, workplace of winemaker Chase Marden. He and everyone else at Keel and Curley invite you to try their products at Uncorked, the weekly after-hours wine bar, open from 5 p.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The wine bar is located inside Keel and Curley’s retail store. It has the feeling of an old country store, but
polished and refined – the type of place for that one-of-a-kind buy in a setting that holds a cozy, clean elegance. The all-wood furniture looks inviting, and the soft candlelight on the tables makes it even more comfortable. The expansive outdoor deck looks like a rustic oasis – the perfect place to sit down with a glass of wine and just relax. This is the idea behind Uncorked. So every Friday and Saturday nights, the folks at Keel and Curley open their doors for “Uncorked,” with live music from singer/guitarist Casey Stidham. The ceiling lights turn off as the crowd slowly grows, people relaxing in the candlelight. Stidham plays a relaxed set of cover songs from various artists, including tunes

from the Black Crowes, Tom Petty and his personal favorite, Dave Matthews Band. “I love this place,” Stidham said in between songs. “Big ceilings and there’s plenty of room to stretch out.” Stidham said he also enjoys the quiet, pastoral surroundings, saying “I like that it’s different. You kind of feel away from everything. It’s fun. You’re not in the middle of the city.” But there is more to love about Keel and Curley and Uncorked. “People get to meet the winemaker, they like that,” Marden said. “They like to hear about something
that they drink, how it’s made. It’s attractive: the story, the idea, and the wine is not bad either,” he adds, grinning. Actually, Keel and Curley’s wines range from good to great to unbelievable. The Sweet Blueberry wine is medium-bodied, with the smell of the fields in harvest time. It has a natural sweetness, without being syrupy, and tastes every bit as you would imagine a blueberry wine should. It is wellbalanced and finishes clean on the palate. Continued on page 113

Strawberry wine is available at Keel and Curley. It is a popular item. Photo by Pixel This Photography
Keel and Curley’s Strawberry Riesling has a bouquet of fine strawberry Bon Bons. It is a light-bodied wine, pairing the pride of Plant City with one of the sweeter grape varietals in California. It is fruity, but not overly so, and has a perfect balance between the sweet berry and generally acidic grape. It makes an excellent dessert wine, and the refreshing, clean finish is well-suited for the unseasoned wine drinker. The Tangerine Zinfandel has a bouquet of citrus blossom honey. The warm, orange-ruby hue looks like a sunset in a long-stemmed glass. Like all of Keel and Curley’s wine, it is well-balanced and finishes clean, with a beautiful blend of sweet citrus and a light, white grape wine taste. The Florida Frost White dessert wine is made from frozen Vidal grapes from British Columbia, Canada. The bouquet is sweet – the gorgeous, golden glow of the wine is almost hypnotic. Like a lot of dessert
wines, it has high alcohol content, but this one is so smooth you never notice. It is like honeyed nectar, like drinking a sweet glass of pure light. Marden insists that all the wines be fermented at the Keel and Curley Winery. “Everything is made right here,” he said, gesturing to tanks in the winery. “I’m a big stickler with that. We could ship [in] wine and put labels on it, but we don’t. Everything is fermented, clarified and filtered here.” Good times happen there, too. The Uncorked wine bar is located at the Keel & Curley Winery, 5202 W. Thonotosassa Rd., in Plant City. Is it good or bad to twist and turn your back?
For the most part, our spines look like slim columns of attached vertebrae and are relatively flexible. But the sacrum, the thick, irregular bone that joins the hip bones to form the dorsal or rear part of the pelvis, is made up of five fused spinal segments. It is NOT flexible. Nor is the ilium, the three fused bones that make up the rest of the pelvis. The sacroiliac joint connects these two parts. Where we get into trouble is when we try to twist and turn the parts that aren’t flexible. Almost any movement that places off-center tension on the lower back can strain the sacroiliac joint- even something as minor as turning suddenly in your seat. The usual complaint is pain felt on one side of the back, near the hip. The Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to locate the exact source of the trouble. The Doctor of Chiropractic’s hands-on therapy, including adjustments, and manual traction, helps restore proper positioning of spinal segments and eases the pain without drugs. Special Note: At this special time of the year, we wanted to share a special “Thanks” to all of our patients, families and friends. It is our prayers that Everyday will be Thanksgiving and that you will continue to be Blessed. Blessings, Dr. Dukes and Staff

“I was sent to physical therapy for neck and upper back pain with severe headaches caused by ruptured and bulging discs. As a result of my therapy I no longer have pain at night while I am trying to sleep or during the day while working. I no longer take pain pills and muscle relaxers. I hope to stay pain free by starting the wellness program here at Allcare. Many thanks to a very knowledgeable and courteous staff. This treatment made the idea of surgery a thing of the past.” -Patient quoted from his results at Allcare-S.B
