Art was all around, as both Mount Dora and Tavares hosted local artists to display their work and invited the public to stroll throughout the downtown areas to enjoy. The second annual Girlz to Women event was themed “A Fashionable You” and provided topics for the young ladies to realize they hold the keys to their self confidence.

Cagan Crossings provided a perfect location for the weekend arts and crafts fair in the end of January. Surprisingly, the weather warmed up from the chilly forties we’d been experiencing, and short sleeves were a must. Situated in the center lawn, the variety of booths presented a nice smattering of offerings.

ell, as I type this, I imagine the parties and celebrations are still going on from the Green Bay Packers big win over the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers. While some of my best friends are Steelers fans, I had to cheer for the Packers. Those of you that know me, are well aware that I am a devoted Cowboys fan. Therefore, I had to pick a team to root for, unless I wanted to spend the entire Super Bowl broadcast applauding our incredible stadium (which undeniably deserves a decent amount of awe and adulation). I will admit, my decision to become a “Cheesehead” for the evening was petty and selfish. However, my logic was simple. I didn’t want Pittsburgh having SEVEN Super Bowl rings when my beloved Cowboys only have FIVE… Like I said… petty! Whatever my reason, it was a great game and I’m glad I was cheering for the winner. Congrats to the Green Bay Packers! And Thanks to ALS Landing for the great Super Bowl party. And football season is now officially over (for now) and men can turn their attention to their significant others just in time for Valentine’s Day. Stumped on how to express your love this year? We have a few ideas for you, including surprising her with Ballroom Dance lessons. I actually talked Paul into one of those a few years ago. While Paul was hesitant at first, we both truly enjoyed ourselves and even spent the following evenings practicing the steps we had learned. It was especially intimate and yet fun and I would highly recommend it to any couple. We also highlight some other local businesses ready to help you out for the romantic day in this month’s feature. I must recommend the FOCUStini, only available at ALS Top Shelf in Tavares. I can honestly say we have never had a menu item named after us and it was a lot of fun to work with Tammy Perdue to create this “one of a kind” martini. I wanted something red, as it is our signature color, and I wanted the drink to be unique. Tammy hit it out of the park with this deep pink, light red concoction which tastes like a sweet, creamy, chocolate covered cherry. ALS Top Shelf is a great Valentine’s Day choice all the way around… with the superb food and unbeatable sunset view of Lake Dora. Whether you stop in for the FOCUStini or a romantic dinner for two – be sure to tell them that FOCUS sent you. Wishing you all a Happy Valentine’s Day,

ount Dora whet its appetite for its upcoming Art Festival with an Art Stroll on January 14th. The Mount Dora Center for the Arts, with the Mount Dora Chamber, hosted the event, with local artists work displayed in galleries around town, as well as in the Baggage Room of the Chamber Building. Wine, punch, and munchies were provided along the way, as well as Commemorative Centennial champagne glasses. Newcomer, Fly the World Gallery, hustled to get open in time for the art-themed event and welcomed visitors to explore their new gallery and gift shop. The following Friday, the Business Development Committee and the Chamber of Commerce hosted the Winter 2011 Downtown Tavares Art Walk. What began as a dreary day blossomed into a fun-filled evening with inspiring artwork, complimentary refreshments in downtown businesses, and live entertainment throughout the town. Artists displayed their creations along Main Street from Belton’s Bail Bonds to Ameriprise Financial Services. Ruby, New Hampshire, and Joanna Street businesses hosted artists as well. Over 30 artists participated in Art Around Town. While there were a wide variety of mediums from handcrafted jewelry to

wood carving, a central theme seemed to be Florida and nature. Husband and wife Michael R. Boelke and Linda OstwaldBoelke of Oviedo depict native Florida animals and seascapes in mediums ranging from gouache to colored pencils. Cindy Hughes of Leesburg designs whimsical jewelry using glass beads she creates herself. Kate Hall of Leesburg is an award-winning mixed media artist as well as an art instructor. She incorporates glass and stone into her artwork resulting in a surreal effect. A new twist was added to this event with Walk & Win. Colleen McGinley, Executive Director of the Tavares Chamber of Commerce said Walk & Win was a collaborative idea between the Chamber and the Business Development Committee to encourage visitors to stop by all of the art displays. “We wanted to give everyone a chance to be seen,” said McGinley. Stamps spelling out the word “Tavares” were given out at each location. Completed entries were turned in at the Chamber’s tent in exchange for raffle tickets. Bonus tickets were given for business cards collected from downtown businesses. The winner received a gift basket filled with merchandise and gift certificates valued at over $500. his nonprofit annual event is geared to provide positive self esteem techniques to middle school girls of all races, creeds and backgrounds. The second annual event was themed “A Fashionable You” and provided topics for the young ladies to realize they hold the keys to their self confidence. Guest speaker and the HR Director of the City of Leesburg, Jakki Cunningham Perry, was exceptional in role playing how to speak with confidence. For example, good eye contact and a firm handshake make for a good first impression. Cindi Williams, a professional photographer took individual photos and her addressed how to deal with tough situations. An exercise to encourage self confidence was to look into a mirror and pick out what they thought were good and not so good features and realize they are all a part of what make us unique. Each participant then drew a self portrait of how they feel they look and then ended with discussion. Belle came to the event for the first time and realized that she was more self confident than she thought! A returning participant Katie learned that she needs to bring her guard down and she is to love all of her flaws
and not just some of them. The young ladies had a terrific time and learned a lot from all of the speakers. Guest speaker Cary Ferree who taught ladies to walk the runway gave advice on good posture and to walk with your head held high. Christine Jackson completed the girl’s looks with makeup and hair tips to look their best every day. The participants’ wrote thank you notes to show their appreciation and walked down the ‘runway’ to show off their new confidence! Many thanks go out to the volunteers who gave of their time and talent to make this event possible. The head volunteer Joanne found a she has a passion to help the young ladies and believed in Claudia Virga’s (founder of Girlz to Women) mission to create a generation of confident young women. Cagan Crossings Weekend Arts and Crafts Fair Article by : Marion E. Wildey
N
orth meets South and they, in turn, meet East and West as neighbors in Cagan Crossings, a perfect location for the weekend arts and crafts fair in the end of January. Surprisingly, the weather warmed up from the chilly forties we’d been experiencing, and short sleeves were a must. Situated in the center lawn, the variety of booths presented a nice smattering of offerings. Food and snack vendors included barbeque, French fries, Kettle corn, or lemonade. Cub Scout troop 957 were selling baked goodies, coffee and lemonade in order to raise funds for their new pack. Amongst needing supplies for arts and crafts, patches, a pack flag and weekender camping gear, tiger den leader, Paul Fogle and pack committee chair Kelly East were out there letting folks know about their new pack. The pack is open for those interested; they meet at Sawgrass Bay on Thursdays at 6:30pm. A lot of the artist vendors were from out of state, and obviously loving the warm Florida sunshine. Marsha and Dennis Gibson were
thawing from the winter in Cleveland, OH, where they are from. Their registered booth was Seas the Glass, which had beautiful handmade jewelry featuring sea glass. Dennis finds the sea glass along the shores of Lake Eerie and Marsha makes necklaces, rings and earrings. Marsha playfully says her husband is in charge of “heavy lifting,” and is “VP of procurement.” Paintings, plants, pashminas and pet bowl holders warranted second looks from attendees, but Adelina Guzman and her family came out with the intention of improving her botanical collection. “My mother told me about the plants, and I love plants, so I came out to find some.” Besides the typical plants that flourish in Florida, there was a vendor selling Pua Melia, or what is commonly known as Plumeria. The cuttings grow into bushes fifteen to twenty feet tall if left to grow, and since they are family to the palm tree, grow very nicely in the sandy soil. All in all, the arts and crafts fair was a great way to get out and soak up some vitamin D.

ebruary is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. One in three adolescent girls in the US is a victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner. These violent relationships can have serious consequences for victims – putting them at higher risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior, suicide and

adult re-victimization. This February is the time to educate about the seriousness of teen dating violence and the prevalence of this epidemic in our lives. You are crazy about each other, but is your relationship healthy? Not sure? Here are some ways to tell. • Respect. Does your boyfriend or girlfriend like you for who you are or do they like a made up version of you? Do they listen
when you talk? If they want you to do something that you don’t want to do, do they keep pushing? In any relationship, respect is really important. If you have to move your boundaries or change who you are, there is a problem with respect. Respect in a relationship means that each person values who the other is and understands — and would never challenge — the other person’s boundaries. • Trust. Are you being cut off from your friends and family? If you talk to someone of the opposite sex, does boyfriend or girlfriend get jealous? If so, how much jealousy is there? Jealousy is a natural emotion. How
one reacts to this emotion is what matters. A healthy relationship is based on trust. If your boyfriend or girlfriend is always checking up on you rather than just trusting what you say there is a problem. There’s no way you can have a healthy relationship if you don’t trust each other. • Honesty. Trust and honesty go hand-in-hand. Have you caught your boyfriend or girlfriend in a lie? Have you been caught lying? In a healthy relationship, two people trust each other and there is no reason for either person to doubt the other’s honesty. • Fairness. Is your relationship fair to you both? Does one person set the agenda? Did one person have to give up all their old friends? When you go out to eat or to see a movie, do you take turns choosing? Are you both equal in the relationship or does one person always get his or her way? It should be a relationship, not a power struggle. • Support. In a healthy relationship, your partner is happy for your successes and sympathetic when things are rough. Is your boyfriend or girlfriend there with a hug if you get a part in a school play or make the varsity team? They should be. • Communication. You shouldn’t be afraid to be open and honest. If you constantly have to censor yourself because you don’t want your boyfriend or girlfriend to get angry, there is a problem. Talking to your boyfriend or girlfriend should be fun and almost magical, not yelling or abusive. Haven of Lake and Sumter Counties, Inc is a nonprofit organization providing comprehensive, unduplicated services to victims of domestic violence and sexual violence. The Haven’s primary goal is to provide victims alternatives to abuse or life threatening situations and empowerment to establish a violence free life.

Images of Clermont As researched by Doris Bloodsworth Interview by Marion E. Wildey and Photos by Bonnie Whicher
FOCUS: How did growing up in Lake County inspire you to add to the Images of America collection with Images of America: Clermont? Doris Bloodsworth: There is no longer a Groveland High School or Clermont High School. There were for many generations, and in 1993 they merged to form South

Lake High School. When they merged, the newspapers did a story and said it was the oldest running rivalry in the state of Florida. When there were no longer both the high schools, it was exciting to have this brand new school, but [the students] felt a sense of loss of identity. What provoked this book was a schoolmate of
mine, Marilyn Gammon-Smith. In Groveland, [Marilyn] started a website, where the alumni could reminisce and there’s a newsletter in Clermont where the alumni do the same thing. People started sending her stuff
uthor Doris Bloodsworth began the tendrils of her life roots in Lake County at the age of nine, and although she wandered briefly, she and her husband never felt like they left. High school sweethearts married over forty years now, Bloodsworth was encouraged by her husband to follow her dream of writing. And at age 42, instead of looking back and wondering “what if,” she enrolled in classes at University of Central Florida, and impressed the young gentleman of the school’s off-campus newspaper. Her professors suggested her dedication warranted a more established program, and Bloodsworth transferred to University of Florida. She found success reporting for the Gainesville Sun, The Wall Street Journal, Orlando Sentinel, and Bloomberg News, and was named Writer of the Year by the Lake County Historical Society.
to photograph and put on the website, so she started getting all of this memorabilia and wanted to start a historical museum. In 2006, [Marilyn] had the full intention of starting a historical museum in Groveland and found out she had a rare terminal cancer. She was just such a neat person and it was her dying wish to have this museum. I had always liked these Arcadia books, and I wondered if they would be interested in a book about Groveland because we had all these great photos we’d collected for the museum. They said yes, and I did it because of the proceeds I could share with the museum. This book had been out only three weeks and the publisher wanted to add Clermont and so they called me, knowing I’d grown up in the South Lake area. FOCUS: With the research involved in tracking down pictures, identification and stories, does anything stand out as surprising? DB: I think the most surprising thing I learned in Clermont was about a bank robbery in the 1930s. The witness there, one of the men who was tied up, has a story to tell where he alleges that it was Fred Barker, who was the son of Ma Barker. They actually lived not too far from Clermont and the FBI found out where they lived and there was a big shoot-out and that was the end of that. I hadn’t realized that these famous gangsters from the 1930s, that there was a tie
to Clermont. FOCUS: Images of America: Clermont will be the feature of February’s community library program, tell us more about that. DB: A community-wide reading program called, “Clermont Reads History.” It’s based upon a model that’s been done in a lot of communities. The idea is to bring a community together by reading and discussing a book together. I was interested in doing that with this book because it is about the history of Clermont. There hasn’t been a history book written, for twenty-five years about the city’s history. You have a community where it’s kind of a dichotomy, and a lot of communities in Florida are like this, where you have the older, beenthere-for-several-generations, and then you have many new people that come from other parts of the country and don’t know the history. I think that talking about the history brings people together. When I did the Groveland book, in fact I did something very similar. It was very rewarding – the class grew as it went along and in the end the people did say that it brought a lot of pride to the community, this rich history we were unaware of. FOCUS: The Cooper Memorial Library will host the Clermont Reads History program, and
you will share pictures and memorabilia that couldn’t fit in the book. What’s the schedule for the program? DB: It will be every Wednesday [February] from 12 noon to 1 pm, on the first floor community room. People are invited to bring a brown bag lunch or buy a lunch at Café’ Dupee’. We hope that when people learn more about the history they will feel united and have a greater sense of community pride in the city they now call their hometown.

health » Focus myriad of movement difficulties. Also, each person’s range of motion is different—don’t be discouraged if you can’t reach as far as someone else. 5. Not exercising opposing muscles. Opposing muscle groups should a have a proportionate strength relationship for proper joint balance and stability. For example, your quadriceps on the front of your thigh is opposed by your hamstrings on the back of the thigh. If one becomes too strong, you risk injuring the weaker muscle group.
10 Common Mistakes Made While Strength Training Article submitted by: Roseanne Breckels, MS, CSCS, ACMS HFS
P
umping iron…lifting weights… resistance exercise…strength training. All of these terms describe one of the most important activities that you can do to improve your physical well-being. The National Strength and Conditioning Association defines strength training as a specialized method of conditioning that involves the progressive use of resistance to increase one’s ability to exert or resist force. You may have already reaped the benefits of strength training. If you haven’t, now is the time to start! Benefits include arthritis pain relief, joint stability, restoration of balance, bone strengthening, weight control and muscular strengthening. Whether you’ve been working out for 25 years or 25 days, it is essential to make sure you are exercising as effectively as possible. You’re spending precious time and energy to look and feel good so why not make sure you are working out correctly! Listed below are some common mistakes made while strength training. Take a peek to see if you can make small improvements to your workout plan to get the results you want faster. 1. Demonstrating rather than developing strength. Your primary goal while strength training
30
february 2011 myfocustv.com
should be to build strength and endurance, not show others how much you can lift. It doesn’t matter if you can bench press 200 lbs. if you can’t do it correctly. You can compromise your training efforts and develop an injury with this way of training. 2. Not strengthening what you think you are strengthening. Specific exercises will strengthen specific muscles and achieve the desired results you are looking for. It is important to select exercises that will help you achieve your training goals. For example, doing bicep curls will not make you a stronger swimmer. Strengthening your deltoids, triceps and upper back will. 3. Not controlling the speed of the exercise. While certain training protocols call for fast movements, general strength and conditioning exercises should be done in a slow and controlled manner. This will force you to not cheat and use the muscles you are supposed to. 4. Not exercising through the full range of motion. For muscles to retain their natural elasticity, every strength training exercise should be performed through its full range of motion. Failure to do so can result in tight or “bound” musculature, which can lead to a
6. Holding your breath while exercising. Holding your breath while strength training can lead to increases in blood pressure which is followed by a significant rise in chest pressure. This can result in dizziness and possible fainting. An easy way to make sure you don’t hold your breath is to count your repetitions out loud. You have to breathe to speak! 7. Not exercising at the right level of intensity. A muscle will grow stronger when a demand is placed upon it. You will not see strength gains if you keep doing 15 repetitions at the same weight for 6 weeks. Weights
should be raised after 12-15 repetitions can be performed properly on 2-3 consecutive workouts. 8. Not giving your muscles an appropriate amount of time between workouts. Rest is needed for muscle tissues, tendons, and ligaments to recover and rebuild from the strenuous demands of strength training. At least 48 hours is needed for a muscle group to fully recover. 9. Trying to do too much too soon. It is important for your exercise program to increase gradually. This will lead to proper strength development and consistent exercise sessions. Doing too much to soon will lead to extreme muscle soreness and possibly injury. 10. Not performing the exercise properly. Correct technique for each exercise will increase your strength gains and decrease your likelihood of getting injured. Some information was adopted from ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal, March/ April 2005 edition.

focus » legal a “breach” or “default” of the lease. A common breach of the lease by the Tenant is failing to pay the rent when due. In some instances, before being able to terminate the lease based on a breach, written notice is required to be given to the breaching party informing of the breach and giving an opportunity to correct such breach . Not every breach gives a right to end the lease. To avoid costly consequences, care must be given before crying “breach” and terminating the lease.
FLORIDA’S RESIDENTIAL LANDLORD TENANT LAW – Part III of III “Termination and the Security Deposit: If the lease ends, can I get my money back?” Article submitted by: Attorney Beth Ann Gause, GAUSE & HARGROVE, PLLC
T
he three most common ways that a lease can end are: 1. Naturally – the agreed lease period ends; 2. Written notice to the other party; and 3. Violation of a law or a condition in the lease. Termination by written notice can be required by the written terms of the lease, i.e. tenant shall give 30 days written notice prior to terminating this lease. However, the law can also require that “written notice” be given in order to end the lease. An example of this is when the lease does not include the time period of the lease or if parties do not have a written lease. Then either the landlord or the tenant may end the lease by giving the proper written notice. It is not enough to merely give “written notice,” the written notice must also be given in advance of the desired end date. How much advance time must be

given will depend on how often the tenant is to pay rent. For example, if the tenant pays rent weekly, at least 7 days advance written notice must be given before ending the lease. If the tenant pays rent monthly, then at least 15 days advance written notice must be given before ending the lease. If the tenant pays rent quarterly, there must be at least 30 days advance written notice and if the tenant pays rent on an annual basis, there must be at least 60 days advance written notice to the other party before terminating the lease. The written notice should be sent by certified, return receipt mail. Lastly, the lease can be terminated by a violation committed by one of the parties of a required law or a condition stated in the lease. The violation is known as
Once the lease has ended and the tenant has moved, the tenant typically looks forward to the return of the security deposit. If the landlord is not going to make a “claim,” a demand to keep the security deposit, she must return the money to the Tenant within 15 days of the Tenant moving. Otherwise, the landlord has 30 days to give the Tenant written notice by certified, return receipt mail of her claim. The written notice of the claim must follow a certain format and will tell the tenant how much of the security deposit the landlord wants to keep and why. The notice also instructs the tenant that she only has 15 days to give the landlord any written
objection to the claim. If the landlord does not timely give the Tenant written notice of her claim, the landlord gives up the right to keep the deposit. Likewise, if the tenant fails to timely object in writing, the landlord is authorized to keep the claimed portion of the security deposit. Knowing when you have the right to the return of the security deposit or when you can terminate the lease can be tricky. Not every tenant will be entitled to the return of the security deposit just as not every breach gives the other party the right to automatically terminate the lease. Before terminating, think twice. Be very sure of your rights and duties prior to terminating based on a breach by the other party, after all, a lease is a legally binding contract. Your best bet is to seek individual legal advice. If you have an important legal issue that you would like addressed here please email us at info@GHLaw.com.

focus » Dining Profile served with rice pilaf and crisp carrots with sweet balsamic glaze. A tender choice bursting with flavor is the market chop of the day: 12 oz. lollipop pork chop stuffed with blue cheese, baby spinach, dried cranberries & pancetta, seared and baked. Steak lovers will not be disappointed in the Tomahawk steak (bone-in rib eye filet) 14 oz. and aged 21 days. With the spinach and goat cheese topping this steak will melt in your mouth. Served with grilled asparagus and potato fluff, scallions, garlic, sour cream, romano cheese, or the sweet potato fluff with butter, brown sugar, almonds, raisins and cinnamon. The irresistible choice for dessert is the Molten Chocolate Lava Cake, warm chocolate cake with a decadent syrup center. For Top Shelf chef Chris Genesi, cooking is his life’s passion. He began cooking at the age of ten under the tutelage of his grandfather. Genesi attended the Lake Culinary Institute and later honed his skills at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary College. Genesi’s personal recommendations are the Tomahawk rib eye filet or the baked flounder stuffed with shrimp and crab in a light lemon cream sauce.

You will likely be greeted by one of the owners, Rodger Kooser and Stan Budzinski. Dine in the main room, the sunset room, or outside on the second-floor balcony. Start with one of the generously portioned appetizers. Try the New Zealand mussels steamed in garlic shallots, white wine broth with tomato chunks and kalamata olives served with baguette blocks or the pomodora with goat cheese - slow roasted plum tomatoes with garlic and sweet balsamic glaze, diced and served over goat cheese with baguette slices. For your entrée the pan-seared blackened mahi topped with pomegranate and apple salsa is exquisite, moist and flaky and

he Tavares Antique Mall represents a 6500 square foot free-standing multidealer antique mall which features antiques, art and live orchids! Tavares Antique Mall will be featuring, on a monthly basis, an antique dealer or artist of the month in this column. We will discuss what the dealer specializes in, how they came to be attracted to their specific collectible and what has been the most unique item they have come across in their antiquing life. At times we may discuss the current value of certain collectibles and the reasons to collect them. We are not appraisers, so please consider our information and opinions based on experience and education only. In the coming months we will be spotlighting various dealers... Here are a few examples. David Law is an experienced and knowledgeable as a bookseller and collector. Mr. Law also trades in many other fine items of interest. Be sure to stop by the Mall to
shop his wares. Mick Aldridge is our resident sports collector. Mick has an extensive collection of sports memorabilia. We are not talking about start line-ups or just baseball cards. Stop by the shop when you see the “coolest” antique Blue Ford pickup truck in the parking lot. The “cool Ford Pick-up” indicates Mick is in the shop probably bringing in a Babe Ruth signed bat or a nice wood pond boat. “Breathtaking” is the expletive word we so often hear in the shop when customers discover the flowers of Paradise Orchids. Ellen and Jack Batchelor are the owners of Paradise Orchids and compliment the Mall with a variety of species of orchids and many antiquities they procure in their travels throughout the states. We offer fine gift wrap upon request in recycled containers, It’s unique and it’s green! This is a sampling of the goodies available in our shop... We have something for everyone... taste, budget and curiosity !
