Crushed grapes, labor intensive work, fancy wine corks, family history and a beautiful setting in the hills of Clermont all make for an exceptional day at Lakeridge Winery! The Wine Fest was a fun way to spend a beautiful day in February with nothing but sun, music and wine tasting.

arch is here and I must admit – I am already exhausted. Georgefest, Winefest, Mardi Gras, and No Duck Left Behind down… gearing up for Pig on the Pond, Bikefest, Planes, Trains, & BBQ, Class Race Boat Spring Fling, Sunnyland Antique & Classic Boat Show and Central Florida Dragonboat Festival… just to name a few. Somebody actually said to me the other day “there is nothing to do in Lake County.” I couldn’t help but laugh. It seems there is some festival or event everywhere you turn around here! And I will confess – I love it! Sitting out by the water with my family watching the fireworks over Lake Eustis (which were AMAZING, by the way), listening to music on the grounds of Lakeridge Winery, catching beads at Leesburg’s Mardi Gras parade, or watching hundreds of rubber ducks parachute from a seaplane are experiences to be treasured. While I have attended some of these events many times through the years, I have to give kudos to the event organizers for keeping each occasion unique and fresh year after year. And for myself personally, attending this year, as a resident of Lake County, everything has a different feel to it, more personal, more connected to a sense of pride in my hometown. We have recapped the events for you in this issue and I hope you will enjoy reliving them if you attended, or will plan to attend next year when you see what you missed. Be sure to check out the event calendar for all of the upcoming festivals, as well.

ewcomer to Lake County, Nicholas Waggoner (Dog PI) quickly fell in love with this great community and led to a desire to give back. His enthusiasm inspired him to put together “Scooby & Nick’s First Annual Charity Chili Cook-Off ” held on Sunday, February 13th to benefit Lake Cares Food Pantry in Mount Dora. Together with good friend Dale Reppy (Scooby) , Waggoner recruited local businesses to donate auction items and to come out to support the event by making, or just eating, chili. The community responded, with over a dozen chilis being entered into the competition, and approximately fifty people coming out to sample. Local musician and business owner, Rick Merrill donated his time to entertain the crowd with live music. A 50/50 raffle was held and the winner generously donated the money back to the

king and queen, beads, parades, a street party, face painting, live music, carnival rides, and more beads. The spirit and frivolity of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras continues for the fourteenth year right in the streets of downtown, historic Leesburg. Mardi Gras of Leesburg is one of the fun-filled family events that the Leesburg Partnership sponsors to further and maintain the town’s heritage, which was declared Florida Main Street City in1994. The crowning event sets the stage for twelve hours of merriment on Saturday. King Rex and Queen Divine were crowned on Friday evening, based upon the highest total of funds raised for the Leesburg Partnership. Of only four total businesses participating, Joyce Huey, who owns Two Old Hags Wine Shop, and Al Cardiello of Infinity Fitness raised the most, and earned them the royal treatment. Overall, the funds raised totaled $91,676.23, over twenty thousand dollars more than the previous year. King Rex Cardiello had a goal of raising the
most money for Leesburg through various fitness related events, “Let’s get physical, do something fun and raise money through fun fitness.” Three parades throughout the day, and the pets take center stage at 2 pm. Residents Daniel and Shannen Fitzgerald came out for their love of dogs. Transplants from New York, the Fitzgerald’s have been in Lake County for a year, and Shannen says, “[Mardi Gras] brings everyone out. We didn’t know there were so many young people here.” Joanne Ames of Paws Therapy was present at a booth showcasing the good work they do. People can “see what nice dogs we have.” Therapy dogs are used in hospitals, schools and nursing homes. Kathy Reynolds says, “They put a smile on residents’ faces.” The many canine participants in the afternoon parade accomplished smiles and much more for Leesburg families.

rushed grapes, labor intensive work, fancy wine corks, family history and a beautiful setting in the hills of Clermont all make for an exceptional day at Lakeridge Winery! The Wine Fest was a fun way to spend a beautiful day in February with nothing but sun, music and wine tasting. The bands played during the day and you could sit and enjoy your drink or walk around the many vendor booths for a beautiful piece of jewelry, tapestry or stained glass pieces. There were even wine corks made out of Georgia marble with your favorite college team! If you know very little about wine or love it, visit the Winery to learn about how this extraordinary process is completed and the history of their journey that brought them to
our area. As the largest of only 16 wineries in the state, they have one of the best views over the arbor that will take your breath away. Our tour guide, Tom was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor which made it enjoyable learning about the history of it. The best part came at the end where we sampled each one to find just the right one to take home. From a Cuvee Noir Reserve that has a deep, rich color of burgundy with a hint of oak and spice to their newest creation Proprietor’s Reserve that is a blend of the muscadine grape that is perfect as an after dinner wine. Book a party for that special someone or a wedding- they will never run out of champagne! Don’t forget the stomping of the grapes during the fall harvest! Call @ 1-800-768-WINE or email www.lakeridgewinery.com for more details on upcoming events.

Summerville at Oak Hosts Senior Prom for Residents Park T Article Sumitted by : Summerville at Oak Park
he formal affair Thursday at Summerville at Oak Park, an assistedliving facility, brought new meaning to the words senior prom. Brittney Wamback, 17, wore a lavender formal evening gown and carried a red carnation boutonniere as she strolled down one of Summerville’s hallways, looking for her date’s room number. “I’ve never done this before,” she said about pinning the boutonniere. “I hope I don’t hurt him.” Finally, the East Ridge High School senior knocked on the door and greeted her date, 71-year-old Joe Armstrong. “You ready?” she asked. “Look at this,” Armstrong said. “You’re looking good, darling.”
“Thank you,” she said, while smiling and pinning the carnation on Armstrong’s lapel without injury. Their meeting marked the start of a pairing of students from East Ridge and Ocoee high schools and seniors from the assisted-living facility. Terri Glimcher, activities director at Oak Park, said the senior prom came about through Bridging the Generations, a program she implemented four years ago to bring together seniors and students from local schools. More than 60 students and a few teachers from East Ridge and Ocoee decorated the lobby, turned dance floor and dressed up for the senior prom that had a Chinese New Year theme. Glimcher introduced the prom king, Martin Nazario, an East Ridge forensics teacher, and
the queen, Cookie Lindine, 77. The prince was Ocoee senior Darius Jones, 18, and the princess, Frieda Hartfelder, 92. “A lot of these folks never attended a senior prom,” Glimcher said. “It was during the Depression. They only had ... shoes, food and necessities.” She told the crowd the dance took months of planning and encouraged the participants to have fun. “You’re not getting older,” she said. “You’re getting what?” “Better!” the seniors replied. For the next hour, students danced with their dates and others to the tunes of disc jockey Larry Ryder. Referring to his princess, Jones said, “She’s amazing. She’s light on her feet, too. She’s got me going in circles.” Between dances, couples walked down to get their pictures taken by professional photographer Orlando Rivera. One older man sat for a photograph with his date, who wore a red sequined dress. “I know that dress is beautiful,” Rivera told the man. “But you [have] got to look at me.” All 62 residents who attended will get a photograph. Throughout the night, the residents and their dates munched on a Chinese hors d’oeuvres,
including chicken wings, egg rolls, teriyaki beef, sweet-and-sour chicken, coconut shrimp and fortune and almond cookies. The dessert room was lined with cakes and cookies. Local merchants donated the food and flowers. Glimcher said the senior prom has been planned since November. She and Wendy Cartwright, a leadership teacher and Student Government Association adviser at Ocoee High, came up with the idea. Cartwright said this year’s Student Government Association state project is to do something with seniors. So, when she heard about Bridging the Generations from a colleague, she contacted Glimcher. When Glimcher took the idea back to the residents council, they were all for it, she said. “They said that they had never gotten to go to the prom and that it was a big part of growing up that they missed,” she said.

The weekend included carnival rides, a spectacular firework show over Lake Eustis, concerts, a parade, a classic car show, performances from local singing and dance groups, a hot dog eating contest, the Cypress Gardens water skiers, and much much more! State, 2007, interpreted the “Stand Your Ground” law as placing “no duty on the person to avoid or retreat from danger, so long as that person is not engaged in an unlawful activity and is located in a place where he or she has a right to be.” I always recommend avoiding taking matters into one’s own hands as that is something left better off to the professionals. However, “a person is justified in using deadly force if he or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony.” (Fla. Stat. § 776.012). Let’s say for example that you are walking out of a local store about dusk one evening when you are confronted by someone with
CAN I SHOOT? A Article submitted by: Laura Hargrove, G&H Law
s an attorney I have often been confronted with the question, “Can I shoot?” If I am inside my house and someone breaks in can I shoot them? If I am sitting in my car and someone tries to take my car can I shoot them? If I am walking in public and someone tries to rob me can I shoot them? The answer seems simple since the Florida Legislature enacted the “Immunity from Criminal Prosecution and Civil Action for Justifiable Use of Force” law in October of 2005, commonly referred to as part of the “Stand Your Ground” law. (Fla. Stat. § 776.032). The “Stand Your Ground” law substantially amended prior law and eliminated the duty to retreat before using deadly force.

Florida Statute § 776.013, entitled “Home protection; use of deadly force; presumption of fear of death or great bodily harm,” states that a person is presumed to have the reasonable fear necessary to use deadly force if the person against whom the deadly force was directed was unlawfully and forcefully entering or had entered specified areas, including a dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle, “or if the person had removed or was attempting to remove another person against [his or her] will” from these areas. For the presumption to apply, the statute also requires that the person who used the deadly force “knew or had reason to believe that an unlawful
a gun demanding your money and you are in fear of your life. Based on the above Florida Statutes, and assuming that you have the proper permits to carry a gun, you can defend yourself with deadly force. Now that does not mean that you will not be arrested and charged with a crime. Law enforcement has a duty to investigate all killings, and make arrests or refer the case to the prosecutor. Even if you believe that you are following the law to a tee, you could end up having to defend yourself twice. So, it comes down to a matter of interpretation and the exact facts that are involved on a case by case basis. While I may not give an exact answer to the question of “Can I shoot,” I can provide the information on the law to allow someone to make a decision. It will come down to a split second decision that of which the outcome will never change once the trigger is pulled. Law enforcement officers have many hours of training on use of deadly force; leave it to them if you can. If you have a question or a topic that you would like covered please contact Gause & Hargrove at (352) 343-7424 or info@ ghlaw.com.

health » Focus Exercise is proven to reduce absenteeism and disability, and enhance employee productivity. It is obvious that once consistent with an exercise routine, there is increased morale and self confidence. Companies that participate in corporate fitness programs have a positive corporate image, making for a more desirable workplace. Another remarkable benefit of exercise is the improved quality of sleep. Insufficient sleep is associated with many cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Quality sleep is connected to chronic disease prevention and health promotion. The Center for Disease Control suggests the average adult requires seven to nine hours of sleep at night. Including exercise into your daily routine three hours or more prior to bedtime will provide more energy and awareness during the day and is proven to increase life expectancy. Regular physical activity is linked to falling asleep faster and deepens sleep, improving concentration, productivity and mood upon awakening. With the majority of adults’ hours spent on the job, it is a great idea to create an exercise space designated just for workouts. This would cut down on drive time to and from the gym, leaving more time for work, family or other activities. Corporate workouts bring

o you want to be more alert at work, have more energy and less sick days? Then it is time to get exercising. It is proven that physical activity stimulates brain chemicals that leave you feeling happier. A workout at the gym, a brisk 30 minute jog or walk can help combat the high levels of stress overtaking many lives today. If you have a gym membership, use it. If you do not have access to a fitness facility, exercise at work! It is not necessary to have brand new exercise machines to get healthy; all you need is open space for added physical activity, smart and healthy food and beverage choices and a positive attitude. With time being a limiting factor for most of our daily routines, try working out at your workplace. Going into

work early, or staying an extra 30 minutes could be the trick in getting you one step closer in achieving a higher level of fitness and leading a more enjoyable life. Tips for success: • Find a workout buddy; an exercise partner will hold you accountable and make your exercise time more enjoyable. • Set realistic goals; establish short and long term goals that are realistic and attainable. • Corporate fitness program at work; to push your fitness to the next level, talk with your supervisor about starting a corporate fitness program lead by a degreed and certified trainer. There are a multitude of reasons that a company should implement a wellness program, both personally and professionally.
team members together and foster stronger working relationships. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins which provide a sense of euphoria, resulting in improved moods at the office. Now is the time to participate in a regular exercise program for you, and for those around you. Suggested program design: • Aerobic Fitness: Make sure to get in at least 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (walking, jogging, biking, swimming, etc) most days of the week. • Strength Training: This is a vital part of any exercise routine for any person or fitness level. Aim for two to three days per week of weight bearing exercise to increase bone strength and lean muscle mass. • Flexibility: It is important to balance muscles by stretching them post workout. This will improve range of motion and promote better posture. This is the year to throw out all the excuses. There are 1,440 minutes in every day, schedule 30 of them for physical activity! You will not only look and feel better; you will boost self confidence, self-esteem and decrease your risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Adjusted caloric intake, balanced with added exercise is the start for a healthier lifestyle.

His love of technology started in the 8th grade, when taking Physical Science. His teacher at that time, Mr. Bill Hamilton, told him about a robotics program, where he could have fun with his newfound interest.
Frank joined the Robotics program as a member of FIRST Team 1557 in 2008. The team is made up of students from all over Lake County. The club promotes science and technology, while designing and building
robots for competitions. Frank is a Dean’s List semi-finalist. He is only one of five students to achieve this award from the FIRST Robotics competition, which an estimated 40,000 students from around the world participate in. Outside of school, Frank has a job doing web design. In his spare time, he takes classes at Lake Sumter Community College in Leesburg. We wish Frank luck in his future endeavors! To learn more about the Robotics team, go to www.12voltbolt.com

for the past seven years. With its creative approach to food, award-winning wine list, and spectacular sunset view of Lake Dora, Pisces Rising has established itself as a premier Lake County destination. Proprietor Anney Winters moved to Mount Dora from the Florida Keys, where she
enjoyed dining with fresh seafood and magnificent sunsets. After relocating, she realized the need for a restaurant offering this in downtown Mount Dora. Where Pisces Rising stands was formerly a home which was completed in 1920. The house was kept intact and the restaurant built around it, to include an open kitchen, main dining room, and the inside bar, which is named The 239 West Lounge. The large deck outside boasts a second bar and quickly became “the place to be” for watching the sunset over Lake Dora. The combined areas can seat approximately 250 patrons. “Artistic Food is Made Here” is proudly stated on the wall inside of Pisces Rising. In a town known for its arts, Chef Alexander Gandia muses “It only makes sense for the food to also be art.” Specializing in steaks and seafood, the menu flaunts their signature “Creoleribbean” flair, with dishes that combine
the spicy influence of Creole cooking with tropical touches, such as the inclusion of bananas or pineapple, customarily associated with Caribbean fare. All dishes are prepared from scratch, using only the freshest, highest quality ingredients available. The menu changes seasonally to allow Chef Alex to create dishes that highlight seasonal ingredients while they are at their peak. Menu favorites include the Paella Pisces Rising, prepared with chicken, shrimp, mussels, and Andouille sausage in a white wine fish broth over yellow rice, or the “Award-Winning Cuban Snapper,” where the whole snapper is seasoned with Island Spices and flash fried. Designed to tantalize your eyes as well as your tastebuds, sample the Polenta Berry Salad. Fresh berries, cherry tomatoes, and a mix of spring greens are tossed with a homemade Champagne Vinaigrette and served on a bed of crispy, fried polenta rectangles. Keeping up with the latest European trend of “foams,” Chef Alex whips up a Cilantro Cream foam to accompany fresh Blackened Grouper, served with his signature Caribbean Rice. To create this “moro rice,” Chef Alex starts with a traditional black bean stew, which he then mixes with yellow rice, folding in ham, garlic, and sweet plantains. Round out your dining experience with one of Pisces Rising’s signature desserts. Made from scratch by their in-house pastry chef, Pisces Rising offers choices worth saving room for. The mile high Sunshine Orange Cake delights the tastebuds with light, citrus-flavored layers, while the Key Lime Pie has a flaky, lighter-than-air crust and a fluffy meringue to perfectly complement the tangy Key Lime filling. With two full bars and live music on the deck, Pisces Rising also serves as a great entertainment venue. The inside, upper level is a perfect setting for a private party, whether celebrating a birthday or anniversary or even a shower. Chef Alex was voted “Best Chef in Lake County” for 2010 and the restaurant has been awarded The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence three years in a row. They have also been voted “Best Seafood Restaurant in Central Florida” by the viewers of WESH-TV, among many others. Pisces Rising is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and offers a Sunday Brunch Menu. They also feature Wine and Dinner Pairings the third weekend of every month.
