his month was all about speed. It started out with Dragonboat Racing and ended with Horseracing. The beginning of April, FOCUS Magazine teamed up with ALS Landing to create their first dragonboat team, FOCAL Dragginz, for the 9th Annual Central Florida Dragonboat Festival. I didn’t get to paddle with the team this year, but plan to next time! The event was once again a great success. I’m proud to be a Rotarian and that the money we raised will go to local college scholarships! April also brought about some thundering… but I’m not talking about the kind that comes with April Showers! Leesburg Bikefest roared into town once more! While I am not a biker, I can’t help but appreciate a beautiful bike and enjoy seeing them cruising our Lake County roads while in town for the event! Since our family moved here last fall, we have definitely enjoyed exploring the area and discovering new hidden treasures. I definitely discovered that this month when we went to Palm Gardens Marina for the dining review. This waterfront restaurant is known to locals and can be accessed by water or land. You can dine on the deck over the water, under the moss laden trees. And guess what? The food is awesome! Owner, Keith, also has great rates on pontoon boat rentals. I am already picturing myself touring the lakes by boat one Saturday this summer, which is something we have not done yet! Last but not least, I am just getting home from the Kentucky Derby! I wrote about my experience in this issue and I hope you will all enjoy reading about it. I know I keep saying it, but it truly was a dream come true for me! I will be watching the Preakness from home in two weeks and cheering on Animal Kingdom!

Twenty-nine renditions of the age-old undergarments underwent a makeover to catch the eye and bidding paddle of event patrons.

Bras for the Cause is a whimsical event where designers decorate bras and boxers to raise money for the GCCF. As cancer invades the lives of patient and family, everything is bared, so why not “bare” something striking and remarkable? Putting these works of art up for auction helps to raise money for those families striving for a slice of normalcy. Auctioneer Chad Johnson, whose voice could double as Matthew McConaughey’s, entertained the sold-out event with his quick-witted humor. Johnson coached one bidder who was bidding against himself, when no one else was bidding, and asked of Keep on Truckin’, “You got any blinkers?”

Most items sold for a couple hundred dollars, but “Cleopatra” brought in $400. Among the three hundred patrons, Joyce Heap and her husband, Dell, attended for the first time, and Joyce decided to enter a submission for next year’s event that utilized the words “mom” and “wow.” Her mom battled cancer and she is dedicating it to her mom’s struggle. “My mom has always done so much. I’m just thinking about how to visualize ‘mom’ and turn it into ‘wow’.” Organizer Kay Simpson was pleased with the event. “Absolutely awesome! It was a sell-out event. We’ll take a couple of weeks off before we start planning the next one.” Proceeds of the event are used to help patients and families get through their everyday life.. For more information about Bras for the Cause and Boxers Too!!! or the Greater Clermont Cancer Foundation, please visit www.gccf.us or call 352435-3202. The Greater Clermont Cancer Foundation provides financial aid and support to community cancer patients, their immediate families and caregivers in the greater Clermont and surrounding areas. Great Southern Contractors Building Blocks to Your Success Article by : Heather Graham

R

aised in Leesburg, son of a local doctor, Ken Tumlin always had a passion for building. At the young age of 19, he started a swimming pool construction company, which put him through college at Lake Sumter. After obtaining a degree from the University of Florida School of Construction, Tumlin worked for a variety of builders throughout Lake County and Orlando, learning the construction business from all different levels. Then, in 1993, Great Southern Contractors was founded. A full service contractor, Great Southern Contractors constructs buildings for medical, office, warehouse, or retail use. Tumlin explains, “We offer full service, lump sum contracting and design build services, and construction management services. We assist the owner in site selection to ensure the property is the right property for their use. We assist in preliminary budget analysis so the owner can see the big picture as to all the fees that come into play on a new building. In short, we act as the team captain.” Examples of Great Southern Contractor’s work can be found around Lake County, most notably in Clermont: the Presco

Professional Center at the Citrus Tower, Clermont Medical Center, Office Depot, Hancock Village, and the new Firestone on US 27. Currently on the drawing boards are two additional Firestones in Apollo Beach and Riverview, as well as various medical buildings in Lake Nona. Why should you choose Great Southern Contractors for your project? They are committed to assisting the owner through the project from start to finish. “If the owner would like input from us during the design stages, we can assist them right from the start in achieving the desired budget for the building by maximizing design with value engineered material selections. We assist the owner in the permitting stage, then construct the project on time and on budget. All of this is done in a team work concept with the owner, architect, and engineers,” Tumlin promises. With the economy beginning to pick up and the construction projects resuming, Tumlin says this is the time to build if you are an owner or developer. Contact Great Southern Contractors today for a free estimate and let them lay the building blocks to your success.

Feature» DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

THE 9TH ANNUAL DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL Attention Please! Dig deep, get wet and have fun! Story by: Marion E. Wildey Photots by: Bonnie Whicher

T

hirty-eight teams from all over the nation and Canada signed up for the 9th Annual Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival. No motors powered these twentyperson paddle boats, only human power striving to maintain synchronicity with the rest of their teammates. The goal, only 500 yards away, is to pass the finish line before three other boats in the heat. Once teams have established time from two heats, they are placed in a similar division and grouped for skill. The third race is the one teams want to give their all, and beat the clock. The Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival is hosted by the Tavares Rotary Club as a major fundraiser for scholarships going to local seniors. The festival has roots in ancient China. In 278 BC warlords fought and captured surrounding cities to increase

20

may 2011 myfocustv.com

their territory and kingdoms. Qu Yuan, a respected poet and scholar, protesting the takeover of Chu’s capital, threw himself into the Miluo River. So well liked, the citizens raced to his rescue, throwing rice into the water to distract the fish from gnawing at his body. The festival continues to this day in China and internationally. Tavares has participated in the tradition for the past nine years, but this year marks the first in which the celebration also includes sisterhood with Taiwan’s Xindian City. Mayor Robert Wolfe visited Xindian City upon invitation to set into motion a partnering of Tavares and business entrepreneurs of the Chinese city. Cities around the world have created partnerships with other foreign cities, which have similar business pursuits, and seek to improve relations. Sisterhood with Xindian

City began in December, and as a result, Taiwanese dignitaries attended and donated an impressive fireworks display for the evening’s “Awakening of the Dragon.” Mayor Wolfe was in attendance of the festivities throughout the weekend and remarked, “The participation with the community of Tavares and the Taiwanese officials went great. There was a lot of positive feedback and plans to build a bigger and better Dragon Boat Festival next year.” A team consists of twenty paddlers and a drummer and steersperson. The drummer helps keep the pace, and each paddler’s goal is to keep pace with their teammates, both in front of and beside them. Keeping in tune to fellow paddlers is the key to winning, not power. If you’re off beat with your mates, the boat will not progress much towards the finish line. From the first call

of, “We have alignment. Attention, please. Go!” each paddler must dig deep and listen to their team’s calls. Perfect synchronicity moves the boat quickly and efficiently, and can be enhanced with team participation in counting. AL’S Landing and Focus Magazine joined to become the FocAL Dragginz and participated for the first time in the Dragon Boat Festival’s nine-year run. AL’S Landing’s Samantha “Sami” Burger led the group and kept focus by cheering, “SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS!” Sami said, “The whole experience was amazing! I loved our team and hope that everyone comes back next year.” Practicing only three times before the races, the FocAL Dragginz had a good time and demonstrated desire to go at it again next year. While they had no matching life jackets, and utilized borrowed paddles, they had lots of spirit and team dedication.

Nancy Wilkins

of “Horace Mann Insurance” and

Cathy Bateham

of “Affordable Insurance Solutions” have joined forces as “Insurance Solutions” located near the Citrus Tower, Clermont, Florida.

Horace Mann Insurance was founded by “Educators for Educators” that focus on the insurance and financial needs of all Educators and their families. Mrs. Wilkins and Mrs. Bateham’s combined 55 years of insurance experience have merged into a new comprehensive agency putting emphasis on health insurance, retirement planning and to provide every type of insurance an individual or family needs.

Nancy and her husband,

Tom, have three children. Their daughter teaches Kindergarten in the Leesburg area. Their middle son currently in the Army will deploy to Iraq this summer while their youngest son attends High School. Mrs. Wilkins moved to the Lake County area to fill the local agent position needed for Horace Mann at the time. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Clermont and participates in the children’s ministries of the church. She is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and is finishing her third year as a mentor in the Elementary Mentor Program in the Lake County Schools.

Cathy

moved from South Florida in 1992 to the Orlando area where she worked as a Regional Manager for an insurance agency chain. In 1997 she found and fell in love with Clermont, FL where she relocated and in 2001 started her own business “Affordable Insurance Solutions. After moving to Clermont, she met and married her husband Charlie Bateham and together raised her son who graduates this year from South Lake High School and was proud to enlist in the US Marine Corps. Cathy joined the South Lake Chamber of Commerce and is an 8 year member of Several Leads Groups. She is a member of Kiwanis and serves on the board of directors and volunteers in the Terrific Kid program. She has been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clermont since 2000.

FOCUS: How did you end up in insurance? Nancy: I was actually introduced to insurance because my mother worked for an insurance company. I thought it would be the most boring job in the world. Once I started working in the field and saw how much I could help people, I felt it was a way I could make a difference. I like to make insurance easy to understand. After working at the insurance company, I left and worked in Independent Insurance Agencies throughout New Hampshire. I began my career with Horace Mann in 2002 in New Hampshire. I have seen over the years how important my responsibility is after devastating events like the tornadoes in the Villages in 2007 destroyed several of my client’s homes. Because I had secured the proper coverage for them, they were able to rebuild their homes and resume their lives. Cathy: My parents owned restaurants all my life and after working all aspects of the business (since I can remember), that helped to build and give me the business ethic and background that serves me well today. During this time with my parents, I met their friend and Life Insurance Manager who (back in those days) used to collect their weekly premiums, and he needed an agent for our area. I knew at this point the restaurant business was not the future for me and liked the idea of how he helped people with their financial needs.

Spotlight - Nancy Wilkins & Cathy Bateham CB: Rising insurance rates year after year. The health care reform that has not worked. Frustration and inability to insure people due to pre-existing conditions or to be able to offer them less expensive rates.

products.

FOCUS: What factors should people take into account when buying insurance? What sets your company apart from the rest?

Don’t gamble with your financial future. I seized the opportunity and in 1981 put myself back in school, learned the business and have been helping and assisting people every since. I love my work and commitment in serving my community. FOCUS: How many years have you been helping people with their insurance needs? NW: 25 years, starting in New Hampshire then moved to Florida in 2004, just in time for all of the hurricanes. I was given 350 clients who did not have a local agent. After Hurricane Charlie my clients reported 287 claims. It was a tough way to start! CB: Since 1981 (30 years) starting with Independent Life then Prudential in South Florida. FOCUS: What kind of insurance plans do you offer? NW/CB: Our agency offers home, auto, property, umbrella, life, disability,

financial services and health insurance. Nancy specializes in financial services– retirement planning with a special knowledge of the Florida Retirement System and how it relates to Educators; and Cathy specializes in Health Insurance. FOCUS: What advice would you give a young family just starting out in regards to insurance? NW/CB: Life Insurance is the single most important purchase to protect your family. Purchasing it when you are young and healthy can help you obtain low cost protection that can last a lifetime. Many people rely on employer provided health insurance which you cannot continue after you leave their employment so if you lost your job due to disability or downsizing, you lose your protection too. It’s never too early to start planning for retirement. Saving a little each month for retirement really adds up over time.

The Wilkins Family: Sean, Nancy, Tom, Tanya (Vickers) and Drew

NW: There are many different coverage options available and the lowest price does not mean the best coverage. Sometimes a lower premium means that a coverage you thought you had – may be missing. It is important in financial matters to develop a relationship with someone to help you in this area. We are local professionals who have been in the business for some time and we are here to help. To us you are not a number on a computer screen. We have far more accountability to you because you will see us around town, at your children’s schools and volunteering at community events. CB: I find that a lot of people may not necessarily decide on price alone. Many decide based on honesty, trust and the integrity of the person offering the products. What sets us apart is the relationships that we have built over the years, our involvement in the community and the knowledge of our

Nancy is a business partner with many schools to help them with different programs and help them be the best they can be. They volunteer at the schools and help them with special “thank you” gifts to employees and students for different purposes. However, due to the current climate for insurance in Florida, they are discovering that they have competitive programs for non-educators as wellespecially with property insurance. In addition to Nancy and Cathy, the staff consists of Heather Barile, Customer Service and Renee Branum, Licensed Producer, and Tom Wilkins, office assistant.

Insurance Solutions 365 Citrus Tower Blvd. Suite 104 Clermont, FL 34711 Phone: 352-241-6785 Email: nancy.wilkins @horacemann.com Website: www.horacemann.com

FOCUS: What trends have you seen in your business during these challenging economic times? NW: More people are price shopping than ever before. But they need to be cautious, there is much more to consider than price. You don’t want to find out after a claim that you didn’t have the coverage you thought you had.

Carbs VS Carbs: Understanding the difference between good and bad

article by: Alex Miranda, National Training Center Exercise Physiologist The battle of many Americans is whether or not to limit their carbohydrate intake. Over the years carbohydrates have continuously gotten a bad rap mainly because it has been linked to increasing weight gain. In this article we will examine this dilemma. Let’s consider this concept; not all carbohydrates are created equal. Having said that, the health and fitness industry recognizes that there are two kinds of carbohydrates: “The Good” complex and “The Bad” simple. It’s in the grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, legumes and even alcohol. When you begin to understand the various types of carbohydrates, you will likely make better choices, enhance your health, lose weight, boost your performance both physically and mentally and protect yourself against disease or its progression. Carbohydrates are necessary to your health, because every cell in your body uses them for energy. In fact, your brain can only use carbohydrates for energy. Unfortunately, over-consumption of sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and other highly refined carbohydrates has been associated with a higher incidence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even breast cancer. Eating refined carbs can, over time, result in almost uncontrollable sugar cravings. According to

26

may 2011 myfocustv.com

the World Health Organization, sugars and other simple carbohydrates are a leading factor in the worldwide obesity epidemic. With the popularity of low-carb diets, many people are afraid to eat any carbohydrates, but it is important to distinguish between the health-robbing effects of simple sugars and other carbs and the health-giving properties of complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are high-fiber foods, which improve your digestion. They help stabilize the blood sugar, keep your energy at an even level and help you feel satisfied longer after your meal. In contrast, sugar and other simple carbohydrates can alter your mood, lead to cravings and compulsive eating, cause wide swings in your blood-sugar levels, and cause weight gain in most people. In addition, a high consumption of sugar can lead to uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms when you finally decide to improve your diet and forgo the sweets. Examples: simple and complex carbohydrates Some examples of healthy foods containing complex carbohydrates: Spinach-Whole Barley-Grapefruit

Turnip Greens-Buckwheat-Apples Lettuce-Buckwheat bread-Prunes Water Cress-Oat bran bread-Apricots Zucchini-Oatmeal-Pears Asparagus-Oat bran cereal-Plums Artichokes-Museli-Strawberries Okra-Wild rice-Oranges Cabbage-Brown rice-Yams Celery-Multi-grain bread-Carrots Cucumbers-Pinto beans-Potatoes Dill Pickles-Yogurt, low fat Soybeans Radishes-Skim milk-Lentils Broccoli-Navy beans-Garbanzo beans Brussels Sprouts-Cauliflower-Kidney beans Eggplant-Soy milk-Lentils Onions-Whole meal spelt bread-Split peas Some examples of foods containing simple carbohydrates: Simple carbohydrates are more refined, are usually found in foods with fewer nutrients, and tend to be less satisfying and more fattening. Table sugar Corn syrup Fruit juice Candy Cake Bread made with white flour Pasta made with white flour Soda pop, such as Coke®, Pepsi®, Mountain

Dew®, etc. Candy All baked goods made with white flour Most packaged cereals If you are trying to eliminate simple sugars and carbohydrates from your diet, but you don’t want to refer to a list all the time, here are some suggestions: Read the labels. If the label lists sugar, sucrose, fructose, corn syrup, white or “wheat” flour, they contain simple carbohydrates. If these ingredients are at the top of the list, they may contain mostly simple carbohydrates, and little else. They should be avoided. Look for foods that have not been highly processed or refined. Choose a piece of fruit instead of fruit juice, which is very high in naturally occurring simple sugars. Choose whole grain breads instead of white bread. Choose whole grain oatmeal instead of packaged cold cereals. The closer you get to nature, the closer you get to health. Simple carbohydrates, like sugar and corn syrup, are created in a factory – while complex carbohydrates in vegetables and whole grains are designed by nature, and help you maintain your health.

onnie Blackmore welcomes the opportunity to tell her story of how life improved in the four years since she began her life-changing “journey”. Plagued by migraines, digestive issues, fatigue and anxiety attacks since she was a child, Connie’s litany of ailments eventually grew into the chronic stage and additional issues with fibromyalgia, blood pressure and cholesterol. Along with the health issues, came the prescription medications which in the end lead her to become home bound and necessary for her to leave a high-pressured corporate job. “I finally got an understanding that most of what was occurring was nutrition and stressrelated,” she says. She was searching for a way to work from home and came upon the Herbalife business opportunity, she felt this could very possibly

be a win, win, get healthy and earn a living. Within four months of being coached she dropped 20 pounds and 20 inches. In six months, her health had improved so much that she no longer had to take her prescription medication. The changes in her own health made her a believer in the importance of balance in a person’s lifestyle. Being an Independent Herbalife Distributor she now has an unbelievable gift to share with others. Starting with a positive attitude, adding in a healthy nutritional daily diet program, she decided to use her own experience to help others. She does this as part of her Leesburgbased home business, CB Nutrition, an Independent Herbalife Distributor. Herbalife is a global nutrition company which was established in 1980. They offer a range of nutrition, weight-management, and

personal care products, which are available only through independent distributors, such as Connie. When someone contacts Connie regarding their weight issues or overall health problems, she’ll first perform a personal wellness evaluation. This involves filling out a questionnaire regarding such issues as the client’s expectations and any medicines or supplements being taken, and basic measurements of weight, height, body fat percentage, etc. Connie then reviews the data and comes up with a personalized plan geared to the client’s metabolism, lifestyle and expectations. Connie enjoys guiding her clients in choosing which plan will best help in their own individual situation, and how to eat healthier throughout their lives. She demonstrates great passion and enthusiasm for her work and is rewarded by seeing the positive changes in her clients. “Health and nutrition comes first,” she said. “Every ‘body’ needs good nutrition.” She says she never pressures anyone to get on a plan, join a class or receive 1 on 1 coaching. Sometimes people are looking for better health and a few less pounds but are not quite ready to make the commitment to a lifestyle change. No problem, when their

ready to make that commitment, she’ll be there to walk with them every step of the way. If a client decides to let Connie become his or her personal coach, she’ll be there for as long as that person remains on their plan, always available to answer questions, give advice and offer support. She also holds “Weight Loss Challenges,” in which a group of clients will meet once a week for 12 weeks to support and encourage each other – as well as compete to see who can lose the most weight. Connie will also travel to communities to share her story and to offer coaching for individuals or groups, and if there is enough interest, she’ll return there to hold classes and challenges. Because Herbalife, offers a business opportunity, she can also train and coach others who want to start an Independent Herbalife Distributor business. “We do not claim to cure anything,” she said. But it’s amazing what the body will heal on its own through better nutrition and healthier habits. CB Nutrition can be reached at 352-5040499

he process of sealing or expunging one’s criminal record may appear complicated and overwhelming at first, but in most cases, the process can be easily completed by anyone with little to no legal experience. The process does not necessarily require the legal advice or assistance from an attorney, and the first steps toward sealing or expunging your record are outlined in detail on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s (FDLE) website: www.fdle.state.fl.us/expunge/. The FDLE website includes the required documents for the Expunge/Seal Package, which was previously obtained only through the local law library or other designated locations, but now, these instructions and documents are available for free from this website. The next link provided, “Instructions for Applying for a Certificate of Eligibility,” details the requirements for a Certificate of Eligibility used to petition the court to seal or expunge a criminal record. These requirements are also your checklist after completing the Expunge/Seal Package and should be completed in full prior to sending the information to FDLE. The requirements include completing and signing Section A of the Expunge/Seal Package before a notary public, completing the fingerprint form of the package in which you must be “fingerprinted by authorized law enforcement personnel or a criminal justice

The fourth link down, “Download Expunge/ Seal Package (Required Documents),” contains everything you need to complete the package for FDLE. Section A of the Expunge/Seal Package must be completed and signed before a notary public. This section includes your basic identifiable information, the option to Expunge or Seal, spaces available for the charges you wish to seal or expunge, and also spaces for the notary’s identifiable information. Section B of the Expunge/Seal Package is completed by the state attorney or statewide prosecutor only if you wish to have your record expunged, and Section C is completed by FDLE only. The package

also includes General Instructions and Information with Applicable Law, Mailing and Contact Information to FDLE, and it also includes Reasons an Application for Certificate of Eligibility to Seal or Expunge a Criminal History Record Will Be Denied and Disqualifying Charges for Expunction/ Sealing. Finally, the package also includes the Fingerprint form which requires your basic identifiable information again, spaces for the signature of the official taking fingerprints and the person fingerprinted, and spaces for all fingers to be printed. After completing the Expunge/Seal Package, the last page of the documents is a standard checklist for Section A, disposition of the case, fingerprint form, and a $75.00 check or money order to FDLE. Please confirm all sections have been completed, because a missing document will only add further delay to the normal timeframe of six months to a year for processing. All of this information may appear complicated and overwhelming at first, but once again, this process can be easily completed by an individual with little to no legal experience and does not necessarily require the legal advice or assistance from an attorney.

PALM GARDENS RESTAURANT AND Not Your Typical Fish Camp MARINA D Article submitted by: Lisa Rast and Photos by Bonnie Whicher, Bonnie Whicher Photography

iscover a slice of old Florida right off of Highway 441 between Leesburg and Tavares. Leave the highway and the bustle of everyday city life and drive through a stand of trees, by several quaint cabins (available for rent) and come upon the Palm Gardens Restaurant. Relax on the

deck under towering cypress trees and enjoy the most beautiful view of the Dead River and Lake Eustis, or launch your boat for a mere $2. Palm Gardens Restaurant and Marina has been family owned and operated since its inception. Keith Buse’s great-grandfather

built the business in 1934 and it has stayed in the family ever since. After graduating college with a degree in business Keith worked in construction until he returned to Palm Gardens a few years ago. He started at the bottom, doing cleaning and maintenance, and is now running the entire operation. His son Cameron, 23, currently works in the

restaurant and is expected to keep the family tradition going. Keith said he was “sick of deli-style meats” and buys pork butt and whole turkeys and smokes the meat himself. One taste of the pulled pork sandwich – tender and fresh with a smoked flavor – will convince even the pickiest barbecue fan they made the right choice. The pulled pork sandwich is overstuffed on a Kaiser roll and served with traditional barbecue sauce and locally famous King’s sauce. The menu claims their River Burger is “The best burger on the river… and maybe beyond!” The half-pound juicy burger is indeed above par, served on a Kaiser roll with fries and a pickle spear. The menu also includes wings, fried catfish, swamp salad, and a selection of River Sandwiches. The sandwiches are made with the freshest lean meat and portions are a generous 6 to 8 ounces. It is hard to choose between the roast beef, spiral ham, and pulled turkey. A complimentary mini dessert comes with every meal. The hazelnut, peanut butter, chocolate mousse will melt in your mouth and have you coming back for more. Every week brings a new dessert flavor and a new lunch special. Wash it all down with iced tea or an ice cold beer. Palm Gardens Restaurant isn’t just about lunch. Breakfast is served seven days a week starting at 7AM. There’s no better way to start the day than enjoying coffee and country scrambled eggs, or perhaps a River Omelet, and watching a heron take flight over green water. Palm Gardens is a paradise to avid fishermen. Purchase Ethanol-free gas, ice and beer, live bait and tackle, and grab lunch to go for your day on the water. One and two-bedroom cottages are available for rent as well as RV lots. Rent a pontoon boat for a day of fishing or just exploring the local waterways; a halfday $115 and a full day only $175. Palm Gardens Restaurant and Marina is open seven days a week and features live music on the weekends from 2-6PM. Breakfast is served 7-10AM Monday through Friday and 7-11AM Saturday and Sunday. Lunch is served 10AM-5PM Monday through Friday and 11AM-5PM Saturday and Sunday. Prices range from $3.75 to $9.95 and all major credit cards are accepted.

MURDER, MYSTERY & 8th Lake County MAYHEM! Festival of Reading A Article by: Lisa Rast

pril 2-9, 2011 the Lake County Library System presented the 8th Annual Festival of Reading. This year’s theme “Murder, Mystery and Mayhem” brought Florida award-winning authors of mystery and crime fiction to Lake County to discuss their latest books and present free workshops to aspiring authors.

On opening day in the Leesburg Public Library the Eustis High School Drama Club performed the hilarious Agatha Christie spoof, Murdered to Death, followed by awards presented to the winners of this year’s Bookmark Design Contest. Over 1200 entries were received this year from Lake County students. Program coordinator Judy

Buckland said, “This year’s theme, Mystery and Mayhem allowed creativity to flourish. The designs were amazing and thoughtful.” The week’s events included “CSI: Fruitland Park” at the Fruitland Park Library where attendees followed the clues to find a stolen painting. The Secret Service and experts in the fields of trace evidence, handwriting analysis and fingerprinting were on hand to help catch the thief. Hallie Ephron, Never Tell a Lie, got down to the nuts and bolts of mystery writing in her workshop “How to Write a Killer Mystery.” Special guest of honor James Grippando, Afraid of the Dark, talked about sources of inspiration for his novels in the workshop “On Writing the Thriller.” Featured author Tim Dorsey,

author of the hilarious Serge A. Storm novels, discussed his latest novel in the series, Electric Barracuda. The 3rd Annual Authors’ Reception “Dying to Meet You” in the Mount Dora Community Building allowed the public to mingle with their favorite authors, including James Grippando, Tim Dorsey, H. Terrell Griffin, Jon Jefferson, Joyce Elson Moore, Sharon Potts, and Deborah Sharp. Books were available for purchase by Raintree Books. The mission of the Festival of Reading: To present the highest quality literary and cultural events and activities to encourage the love of reading and to connect readers and writers in a way that enriches both by providing informative and entertaining programs to the community. focus » Entertainment the Derby. My suitcase wasn’t packed with the usual girl-variety overload of shoes and clothes for any/all circumstances… but instead my carefully secured and protected hat and “Gerig Original” dress took center stage and were surrounded by only the barest of essentials to get me by! At the Louisville airport, the walkways were lined with large vases of red roses and “Southern Belles” welcomed us to Louisville, offering us complimentary Bourbon Balls. My new fairy-godmother and host for the weekend, Michele picked us up at the airport and gave us a mini tour of downtown Louisville. It seemed the whole city was in full Derby mode!

137 Kentucky Derby An Adventure of a Lifetime th

Article and photos by: Heather Graham

I

f every story starts at the beginning, I guess this one starts back about five years ago. It was a lazy spring Saturday and we were sitting out on our back porch. My husband, Paul started randomly flipping television channels and tuned in to pre Derby coverage. I remember the station spending hours recapping the history of the event, some of the footage in black and white. This was after Barbaro, whose story I had followed to some extent, along with most of the nation. I remember being mesmerized at the stories. The history and the tradition of the Kentucky Derby completely fascinated me. I couldn’t stop watching… the pretty southern women all dolled up and adorned with big beautiful hats, the Southern gentlemen in their suits, standing to sing “My Old Kentucky Home” with a mint julep in their hands. Then, The Race. I’ll never forget that first time I watched Calvin Borel, perched atop Street Sense, come from nowhere , tucked in on the rail to fly past his contenders for the win. I remember the roses being presented and Borel’s childlike jubilance as he celebrated their victory. I think it’s simple to say – I was hooked! From that day, I was completely enthralled (much nicer word than obsessed). I followed the Preakness and Belmont. By the next May, I was prepared. I had read everything I could about the Derby. I prepared myself a hat and made a pitcher of mint juleps. Paul and I sat in the same place outside, but that

36

year I felt “part” of the event. In the ensuing years, we invited others to join us and wear their hats and have a mint julep with us while watching the greatest two minutes in sports. While those Derby parties were great, it wasn’t enough. I knew I wanted to go, HAD to go, to Churchill Downs one day and be a part of its amazing history. Last November the opportunity was presented. A good friend and one of our writers for the magazine, Shelly Gerig, asked if I wanted to go. She had a good friend in Louisville who could set it all up for us and make my dream come true. I, of course, said “YES!” Six months felt like a lifetime away, but there was so much to do! I had to decide what I was going to wear and most importantly, I had to get a HAT! I began working with up and coming fashion designer (and Shelly’s daughter), Haley Gerig, to design my dress. We used a dress I already owned as inspiration and she used that to create an original creation just for me. Together we shopped for fabric, looking for the right colors and textures. Dress fittings occurred regularly. In the meantime, I worked on creating a suitable Derby hat to complement the dress and shopped for the perfect accessories. I was not going to The Kentucky Derby looking anything less than the proper Southern lady! Finally, it was here! Shelly and I flew out to Louisville, Kentucky on the day before

Waking on Derby Day, we three girls spent the morning getting ready and donning our hats. We packed our provisions for the day and headed out. We parked a few blocks away, and I could feel my excitement growing, with butterflies in my belly and goosebumps on my arms as I anticipated coming around the corner and getting my first live look at Churchill Downs! With its majestic white entrance, and the splendid bronze statue of the famed Barbaro marking the spot where his ashes were interred, entering those gates was truly a surreal experience. I couldn’t believe I was really there! I call Michele my fairy godmother, because she not only managed to get us great seats (more on that later), she also has some great connections which allowed us some VIP access. We were cleared as guests to the office suites, which are located directly above the entrance gates to Churchill. This included private bathrooms and betting booths which did not have lines! This may not sound like a big deal, but let’s remember there was a record attendance of 164,858, so I’m sure you can imagine the lines for the women’s restroom. We were also able to stand out on the balcony overlooking the entrance and critique Derby Day attire and the throng of hats as the fashionistas entered. We arrived around 11:00 in the morning, while the Derby post time was not until 6:24pm. However, there were races throughout the day and much to see! We toured through the courtyard, where you could watch the horses be walked one at a time from the paddocks and prepared for the races. We visited Gate 10, where the red carpet was rolled out to welcome the bevy of celebrities who rolled up in their limousines ready for the Derby experience. We even ventured to the infamous infield, where a massive amount of people camped out for the day. The best way I can describe the infield is it was like the biggest street party

I have ever seen! You can’t actually witness the races from there, but strangely, that didn’t seem to matter to the infielders… they were making their own Derby experience. On the other hand, MY Derby experience included Grandstand seating, SIX ROWS OFF THE RAILS, ON THE STRETCH! I don’t know how to really put that in perspective except to tell you that you could actually feel the stampeding horses as they raced by. One race we even went down the six rows and hung over the rail to watch! As race eleven, the Derby, neared post time, the Grandstand seats filled and balconies overflowed with guests pouring out of the suites. The crowd cheered as Jordan Sparks performed a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. Then, as all of Churchill Downs joined in for the traditional singing of “My Old Kentucky Home,” I realized it was time. In just a few short minutes, it was going to be over! I took a minute to look around and tried to really take it all in. Then there it was… the Bugler’s “Call to the Post.” They brought out the horses one at a time, then paraded them by us as they led them to the starting gate. And they were off… They thundered by us, as we stood on the bleachers and urged them on. We shifted our eyes to the jumbo screen as they made turns two and three, then heard them coming around the final turn into the stretch and over the finish line! Animal Kingdom was the 137th Kentucky Derby Winner and earned his place in the history books. No. I didn’t pick him to win. In fact, I didn’t pick any winners all day. But in our country, we don’t have a lot of 137 year old traditions we continue to embrace and uphold. And at the end of the day, I realized my dream, as I stood on my seat, six rows from the rail, in the stretch, at Churchill Downs. With a mint julep in my hand, I sang “My Old Kentucky Home,” I wore a big fancy hat, and I saw the 137th Running for the Roses at the Kentucky Derby. This makes me the biggest winner of all! I really have to take the time to thank those who made this possible for me. Shelly Gerig, thank you for arranging this and inviting me. Haley Gerig, thank you for making me look fabulous! Bonnie Whicher, thanks for the great photos! And Michele and Tony Renbarger, I can’t thank you enough for welcoming me into your home and for getting us the awesome seats! You made this an experience I will never forget! Happy to have made a few new friends! Thank you to Paul and Dylan for always encouraging me to follow my dreams.
