Letter From The Editor This was a truly amazing month for us here at FOCUS Magazine! We were honored at the Tavares Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Red Carpet Gala by being named the Small Business of the Year for 2011.
l
bow
We had been nominated before and were up against such a long list of wonderful businesses this year, I really didn’t expect to win. I really cannot express how much it meant to me. To be nominated and voted on by other business leaders in this community is truly an honor. I was caught off guard when they called our name and I failed to thank a few people. First of all, my family; I am incredibly blessed to have a supportive husband and son. They put up with the long hours and my insane crankiness at press time. Paul has kept my spirits up when things were rough and constantly tells me he is proud of me. Dylan has become more involved with the magazine as my intern and has even done some writing for us. Both of them were with me back in the early days when we drove around in the middle of the night and delivered the magazines! I love you guys!

I also want to thank my team. I am lucky to work with so many talented people who just pitch in and get the job done every month. There are my reps, whose faces are more familiar to you all – Lisa, Charlotte, Sam, Sandra, and Kathy - but there is also our design team which works out of the Plant City office – Anthony and Tony, our staff writers – Shelly, Lisa, and Marion, our amazingly talented photographer – Bonnie, our delivery man, Bob, and our new web administrator, Gayle. You all play a vitally important part in this magazine and I thank you all! I can’t forget to thank YOU – the readers. What is the point in any of this if nobody wants to read it? Thank you for picking us up and bringing us into your homes every month! Most of all, I want to thank our advertisers. Some of them have been with us since the very first issue and many of them have been with us loyally for years. We truly appreciate the opportunity to help someone’s business grow and prosper. We know there are a lot of advertising options out there and we consider it our privilege when you choose us! Thank you all for making my dream a reality. Heather Heather D. chamber happenings Eustis Lake Mechanical Contractors, Inc. sponsored the Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce monthly member breakfast on September 8, 2011. Nearly 90 people were on hand to hear the guest speaker, Bill Herrle who is the Florida Executive Director of the National Federation of Independent Business. In addition, the chamber continued the new agenda segment “Minding Your Business” that brings local, county and state leaders to the breakfast for updates on issues affecting members. Florida State Representative Larry Metz spoke to the group about the most recent legislative session and fielded questions from the group. The September Lunch & Learn Seminar was conducted by Wendy Lyn Phillips. The topic, “Top Notch Tips for Keen Kustomer Service” drew 18 people. Phillips’ remarks identified ways that personal images can have positive or negative effects on repeat customers. Held at Michael’s At A Third Place, attendees learned techniques for using “image” as yet another marketing tool to increase sales. The month’s activities also included 2 Business After Hours events, both on September 22nd. A multi-chamber event was held at Mid Florida Eye in Mt. Dora and featured door prizes, hors d’oeuvres, champagne punch and soft drinks. Members who attended were able to meet with staff, see the facilities, and hear about the variety of services offered at the center. The second event was held at RE/MAX Realty in Eustis.
Nearly 90 people were in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony. In addition, a “Making Your House A Home - Business Expo” offered additional networking opportunities for Chamber members. Mount Dora On Saturday, November 12th, the Mount Dora Chamber will host their 2nd Annual Mount Dora Chili/Grilled Cheese cookoff. The fun is from noon until 7pm. The cook-off will be held in downtown Mount Dora at the Main Street Leasing Events Center located at the corner of 5th Avenue and McDonald Street. Only 18 entrants will be accepted. Entry fees are $50 per team. Judging is at 2:30pm by a panel of judges. First, second, and third place trophies will be presented. Entrants must provide 10 gallons of chili or 100 grilled cheese sandwiches for public tasting. Public can purchase an armband for $5 to sample. Proceeds will benefit the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce. Tavares The Tavares Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed their newest member business to the community with a Red Ribbon Cutting Ceremony; Baytree Executive Golf Course Café. Located at 129 Juniper Way, on Dead River Road, the café offers a beautiful view of the lush green fairway. Sheryl Klein, General Manager and Travis Senning, Chef were awesome hosts to the nearly 100 folks who joined in celebrating the Café to the community. The café offers mouth-watering specials, including a Prime Rib night. Contact the Café at 343-3029 for more information on the great specials they offer. In support of National Make a Difference Day, the Tavares Chamber of Commerce member businesses are participating in a food drive. All food collected will be donated

His time for the 5k obstacle run was 24:53. Rick is the owner and founder of Your Best Fitness Coach in Eustis. chamber reaches goal on annual school supply drive
John Moore, Chairman of the Chamber Board, offers congratulations and kudos to Mary Lightcap of House Master, who Chaired the Annual Chamber School Supply Drive, for reaching their $1,700 fundraising goal on the last day of the drive. At September’s Chamber breakfast, a “passing of the hat” that raised nearly $140 and a separate very generous donation from Clinton Pownall of Computer Business Consultants, put us over the top. With this cash and all the supplies donated, the Chamber is able to offer each of the 17 schools in South Lake $100 gift card, Mary reported. John Moore went on to say, “Without the tireless persistence of Mary Lightcap on this effort over the past several months, this project would not have been successful. Thanks also to Clinton and all our other Chamber members for their generosity on this program to help our teachers and students in our South Lake public schools.”

We want people on our team that want to feel and look healthy and want to make money helping people. How much better can it get than that? This is about network marketing and how it can be your answer to health and wealth. Take the few minutes to read this. Make the call. You won’t get a hard sales pitch, just information; then you are just 15 minutes from the next decision. This is the most validated network marketing company to come along in decades. It is not a “get rich quick” venture. You can make a little money with part time effort; a lot of money with a lot of effort; and residual income with a lot of effort and a 2 to 5 year commitment. That’s what we’re looking for. Our CEO’s mission is to heal the family and make this company the “Gold Standard” of the Natural Products Industry. Natural products developed (not just endorsed) by doctors and vetted by science. Assume, for now, that the products are a marketer’s dream; that they work and they are needed because that IS a fact! We are in the momentum stage poised to enter the hyper-growth stage. This is an opportunity to be on the ground floor of what will be the largest nutraceutical company in the world that is expanding and creating income opportunities in Central Florida as well as nationally and internationally. CONSIDER: Network Marketing has grown steadily for the past 20 years, jumping over 91% in just the past ten. The Natural Products industry has grown from $20B in 1990 to $120B in 2009. Does that sound “recession proof”? “The network marketing industry now offers millions of people like yourself the opportunity to build their own network rather than spend their lives working for someone else’s network.” “When you join a good network marketing company, they don’t just give you a track to run on, they also support you in developing the skills and qualities you need to succeed.” Business of the 21st Century, Robert Kiyosaki. South Lake Local» Focus funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake and Sumter counties. Checking in to the Heritage Hills country club, the glitz and glamour of attire and accoutrements might have been distracting until guests were offered the opportunity to win a 1 carat diamond. Valued at $3100, the diamond would be hidden in a sea of cubic zirconium stones, corresponding to tickets sold and each ticket holder got to pick what they thought was the “diamond in the rough,” for a $50 donation. Once everyone made their pick, diamond specialist, Jim Johnson, of Village Goldsmith, would verify the diamond and determine the winner. Co-chair, Linda Sheets spent the evening checking guests in, and eyeing the diamond. She was duly awarded when Johnson authenticated her pick, “I can’t believe I won!” and proudly added, “I’m here to serve the kids!”

The silent auction offers a plethora of donated items to suit all desires and fancies. There were thirty-one items on the list this year, including a picture album basket, Carrabas gift certificates, Images of Clermont book by Doris Bloodsworth and lunch with her, and a three-month Lunar Wine Club membership to extend your wine sampling. Also on the auction block were practical items like an 1/8 page advertising certificate in FOCUS, a $250 LSCC scholarship, and the 2011 Road Atlas. From home décor and art, to jewelry and personal accessories, the silent auction offers the occasion to treat yourself to something you may not seek out, and donate to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake and Sumter counties. The Boys & Girls Clubs are designed to mentor teens and steer them from influences that can lead them down a path to an unproductive future. Lake County leads the six county areas in teen births, high
school student smokers, and overweight high school students. By focusing on five core areas including character and leadership development; the arts; sports, fitness and recreation; health and life skills; and education and career development, the Boys & Girls Clubs have been able to achieve positive results and help teens “realize their full potentials as productive, responsible and caring citizens.” Characteristically, Bacchus Vino Etcetera and Cheeser’s Palace brought a marvelous menu to the evening. The pairing of the pumpkin spice bites in white or dark chocolate with Bodegas Toro Albala Don PX Gran Reserva was spectacular. Wine representative, Troy Sartor, explained that the Pedro Ximenez (PX) grapes used to make the dessert sherry are typically left on straw mats for three or four months before they are squeezed because, “If it’s left on a flat surface, the grapes will rot.” Besides exposure to wine tastings, the story behind a wine draws enthusiasts to a bottle. Keith Mullins of Bacchus Vino donated 15% of the proceeds from orders made from purchases during the evening. Kiwanis of South Lake meets Thursday morning’s at Cheeser’s Palace, and committee members suggest creative fund raisers like the diamond draw, and are searching for a “brick and mortar organization” for upcoming events. President Richard Chapman would like Kiwanis membership to increase because they “will continue to be a part of what makes South Lake a great place to live.”

Mid-Florida Cardiology Specialists Interview by Heather Graham and Photos by Bonnie Whicher
clermont oďŹƒce, one of four locations
T
he team at Mid-Florida Cardiology Specialists (MFCS) is dedicated to high quality care, from prevention to diagnosis to treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Mid-Florida Cardiology Specialists and Orlando Health partnership is beneficial to the community since it provides patients with a choice of physicians in many specialties and a wide range of services. MFCS offers nuclear medicine services, echocardiography services, pacemaker clinic, electrophysiology services, cardiac catheterization, nuclear stress tests, and angioplasty, in addition to many other essential services, all which help strengthen the quality of care provided to patients. FOCUS: How many years has Mid-Florida Cardiology been serving Central Florida?
MFCS: We have 13 physicians and 7 physician extenders.
MFCS: We have been in Central Florida for 28 years and have been partnered with Orlando Health since 2010.
FOCUS: What cardiac services are offered?
FOCUS: How many office locations and where are they located? MFCS: We currently serve our patients from four convenient locations: Clermont, Orlando, Ocoee, and Longwood. FOCUS: How many doctors make up your practice?
20
OctOber 2011 myfocustv.com
MFCS: We offer complete cardiac care: Office Consultation, 64-Slice Cardiac CT, Pacemaker / Defibrillator Implantation and Follow-up Clinic, Nuclear Stress Testing, Echocardiography, Coumadin Clinic, Carotid Doppler and Peripheral Vascular Ultrasound, Tilt Table Tasting, ECP Therapy, Lipid (Cholesterol) Clinic, T-wave Alternans, Holter & Cardiac Event Monitoring, Signal Average EKG, Cardiac Catheterization and Peripheral Angiography as well as coronary, lower extremity and
carotid intervention (angioplasty/stenting), Cardioversion, and Electrophysiology Studies including Arrhythmia Ablation procedures. FOCUS: Which hospitals in Lake County do MFC doctors practice at? MFCS: Our doctors have privileges at South Lake Hospital. FOCUS: How has modern technology affected Cardiology? MFCS: Technology has affected virtually every aspect of cardiology. Even the simple stethoscope is now available in an electronic
version! Basic diagnostic studies such as the treadmill stress test have evolved tremendously with the advent of nuclear imaging making the stress test more accurate than ever. Even the exercise part can be replaced with medications which can be administered intravenously for literally a few seconds. The time honored echocardiogram is typically performed by imaging the heart with ultrasound from outside the body, but can be performed with even greater clarity from inside the body using a transesophageal ultrasound probe with the patient mildly sedated. Advances in imaging the coronary arteries have repeatedly been front page news. For example, multi-slice CT angiography can non-invasively create a
coronary angiogram in the time it takes for the heart to beat just a few times, literally in seconds.
years. In summary, nearly every diagnostic and therapeutic area of cardiology has been revolutionized by technological advances.
For patients with severe coronary blockages, advances in interventional technologies from simple balloon angioplasty to implantable stents and, more recently, drug-coated stents have allowed millions to receive relief from disabling and dangerous angina (chest pain symptoms) without the need for open-heart bypass surgery. Success rates with current generation stents are nearly 100% and recurrence rates have fallen from nearly 50% to less than 5%!
FOCUS: What is the single best piece of advice for a Healthy Heart your doctors give?
One area that has been advanced by technology perhaps more than any other is that of electrophysiology. Current day pacemakers and defibrillators are remarkably sophisticated and clinically effective. Even better, many patients can now undergo radio-frequency ablation procedures that cure them of their arrhythmias! Success rates continue to rise and procedure times have decreased dramatically in the past few
FOCUS: Why should patients choose Mid Florida Cardiology? What makes your doctors the best?
MFCS: Act sensibly! Eat sensibly. Exercise sensibly. Avoid behaviors, like smoking, which make no sense! Better yet, if you have symptoms that might be due to heart disease, or have risk factors for heart disease such as hypertension, diabetes or abnormal cholesterol levels, do the sensible thing -- see a cardiologist for a check-up!
MFCS: Having a “patient first” vision allows our practice to provide premier medical care to each patient individually. Patients choose Mid-Florida Cardiology because they find doctors here they can trust to not only take care of them properly,
but to respect them as fellow human beings rather than just “a patient”, or worse yet, just a chart number. Additionally, patients understand that while all of the MFCS cardiologists are board-certified in cardiovascular disease, every doctor in the group has a “sub-specialty”, as well, often with additional board certifications. As a result, MFCS can offer true “experts” in virtually every area of cardiology including interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular intervention (angioplasty, stents, atherectomy, etc.), electrophysiology (ablations, pacemakers, defibrillators, arrhythmia management), cardiac imaging (echocardiography, CT angiography, nuclear stress testing, cardiac MRI). Patients know that whether they need an office appointment to discuss a question about their medications or an emergency catheterization in the event of a heart attack, MFCS’s doctors are here to help! FOCUS: When should a patient seek the care of a Cardiologist?
MFCS: Follow the old adage -- if you think you might need to see a cardiologist, you do! Visits can be for preventative care such as evaluating and treating hypertension or high cholesterol levels or perhaps having a CT scan of the coronary arteries to see if that family history of heart disease is catching up to you faster than you think. Other visits can be in response to symptoms that may be due to cardiovascular disease such as chest discomfort (especially associated with exercise), shortness of breath, palpitations, lightheaded spells or dizziness, pain in the legs when walking, or stroke-like symptoms. Sometimes patients may have simple tests such as an EKG in a primary doctor’s office which comes back abnormal and warrants further investigation with a cardiologist. The bottom line is that if you’re not feeling well with any of these types of symptoms, it is better to be safe than sorry and to be evaluated by a cardiologist sooner rather than later

S
outh Lake Hospital’s Board of Directors announced the appointment of John Moore as chief executive officer, effective October 1. Moore, who previously served as the hospital’s chief operating officer, succeeds Leslie Longacre, who will retire at the end of this year after 35 years with the hospital. “John is an experienced healthcare leader who is known for his ability to cultivate relationships,” said Susan McLean, president of South Lake Hospital’s Board of Directors. “He is uniquely qualified to lead the hospital, having earned the trust of the staff, board and
physicians.” Moore currently oversees hospital operations and most recently led the development, planning, design and completion of South Lake Hospital’s $63 million expansion. The two-year project nearly doubled the size of the hospital, adding additional patient beds, new outpatient services, a robotic surgical system and several state-of-the-art service lines, including two cardiac catheterization labs.
Prior to joining Orlando Health in 1997, Moore served in management and business development roles for various healthcare organizations. He earned both his Masters of Healthcare Administration and his Bachelors of Business Administration from
the University of Kentucky. South Lake Hospital, in partnership with Orlando Health, is part of a 180-acre health, wellness and education campus that employs approximately 1,100 team members and includes the 122-bed hospital, the Centre for Women’s Health, the National Training Center, and an outpatient surgery center and endoscopy center. health » Focus vital organs. When large muscle groups are utilized during aerobic activity, your body will improve its ability to use oxygen, meaning your endurance will improve. Heart rate and blood pressure will gradually decrease as you develop better breathing patterns. Exercise can also improve your flexibility, boost energy, improve sleep and improve self-esteem among other advantages. Eating healthy means taking a second glance at labels and doing a bit of research. Look for foods that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids, such as salmon, flaxseed and oatmeal. This essential fatty acid helps to reduce inflammation from chronic diseases. Protein such as lean, skinless poultry and beans and legumes contain the highest source of soluble fiber. Increase your intake of whole grains. You have the added benefit of fiber in your diet, plus you feel fuller longer. Stay away from saturated fats and trans fats, like those found in butters and instead try olive or canola oil which are monounsaturated fats. Boost your antioxidants with bright colored fruits and vegetables—they are a natural way to reduce cholesterol levels. Reduce your intake of sodium-laden foods and meats and resolve to eat more natural, fresher and organic diet.
your mind is anxious and your body tense, chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline are released into the bloodstream putting strain on your heart muscle. The chemical components of your blood also change, creating a sticky-like substance that adheres to your artery walls and in turn, affects the pumping action. Though cardiovascular exercise is a terrific way to relieve stress, there are other mind-oriented techniques, such deep breathing exercises and meditation classes like yoga and tai chi. Also look at other things you could be doing in your daily routine. Are you getting at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night? How much caffeine is in your diet and how is your nutrition in general? Surround yourself in an environment where family and friends are positive and supportive. So this year, listen to your heart. Cardiovascular diseases – the nation’s number one killer – can be hereditary or can be caused by negative lifestyle factors. Heart disease can be one disease or a compilation of diseases that includes high blood pressure (also known as hypertension), coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, a history of smoking, high cholesterol, as well as a long list of other diseases. Though hereditary diseases cannot be reversed, you can reduce your risk of heart disease by participating in physical activity, choosing
healthy eating habits, and learning to manage stress. Another risk factor for cardiovascular disease is living a sedentary lifestyle. Physical activity can offer many benefits, but the one that is the most appealing is the benefit of weight loss. What many do not realize is weight loss is just the umbrella of many other wonderful results of getting your daily recommendations of exercise. When inches are lost from the waist area, this means that fat is no longer as close to your heart, nor is it placing added pressure and weight on

octor Joe Morreale at The Chiropractic Center runs his practice with an old adage in mind…”An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. The Chiropractic Center believes that most Chiropractic patients are very “wellness minded”. They don’t believe in covering up the symptoms but finding out what is the source of the trouble and treating it. Frequently partnering with other holistic and preventative wellness organizations The Chiropractic Center works diligently in spreading the knowledge of wellness care, nutrition and alternative choices in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They offer classes such as “How To Stay Young in the First 100 Years” and “How to Stay Fit While You Sit”. They believe that as one gets older they do not necessarily have to hurt more and you do not have to be out of shape just because you have a “desk job”. Dr. Morreale has an extensive engineering and science background along with his Doctorate degree in Chiropractic Medicine from the Palmer College of Chiropractic. This enables him to have a stronger and more diverse technological ability in finding solutions to problems. He knew that Chiropractic Care fit perfectly into his personality and idealogy of what a Doctor is. 100% natural means to getting a patient better. There is a place for medication but should be used wisely not as a “Magic Pill”. Patients and Doctors need to discuss and decide the best avenue of treatment. Dr. Morreale takes the time to research and visit with each patient individually. Not one technique fits all patients.
The practice is expanding constantly. And they are always accepting new patients. Dr. Morreale has just purchased new and improved equipment and obtained additional space in another office on the premises. There now is a massage therapist on staff to further serve those patients in their recovery and help them to maintain a physical balance. We are growing through referrals, community involvement, networking and advertising wisely. We know that it’s cructial to stay visible. They currently support

person is standing next to you at a concert or walking across a conference room or sitting across from you in a restaurant and without any warning whatsoever, they collapse to the floor. They have stopped breathing and have no pulse. In an instant they are dead. It happens just that fast. In fact, it happens to one person every two minutes in the United States. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States, killing approximately 325,000 people each year. SCA occurs when the hearts normal rhythm becomes rapid and chaotic (quivering), which prevents the heart from pumping blood effectively to the vital organs. Victims of SCA CAN be saved, but only if a defibrillator is immediately available to deliver an electric shock. The shock restores the heart to a normal rhythm. Once the victim goes down, the chance of survival drops considerably with every minute that passes and an estimated 95% of the victims of SCA die before they receive emergency medical help. Decades ago a victim’s only chance would have been for an ambulance to get there in time. Today however, Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) are readily available, especially in public places, and are becoming more commonplace. An AED is a small, lightweight, portable machine which will deliver a life-saving electric shock. You will see them in Airports and Shopping Malls,
at the Disney parks and resorts. In the State of Florida they are also mandated in dental practices and most assisted living facilities. Everybody’s AED is a distributor of the HeartSine Samaritan PAD Defibrillator and owner, Graham Wells is making it his personal mission to see AEDs placed in as many public locations as possible. Wells explains, “Once a person suffers a SCA, their chance of survival sours if a defibrillation shock is administered within 4 minutes. Not a long time for an ambulance to arrive. Having an AED nearby can save a life. It’s that simple.” Wells would like to see them in every public facility including restaurants, schools, churches, cinemas, sports facilities and alike. The HeartSine AED is completely automated and requires no medical training to operate. Once the green “on” button is pushed, clear and calm visual and audible instructions walk a person through the steps of attaching the pads to the victim. The AED has diagrams to indicate exactly where they should be placed. The AED will immediately analyze the heart’s rhythm and will recommend a shock if the victim’s heart is in ‘Ventricular Fibrillation’ (VF). It can NOT deliver a shock otherwise. The HeartSine Samaritan AED is small, easy to use and requires no maintenance. It is inexpensive to purchase and comes with a 10 year warranty. Saving a life really can be as easy as AED.
1200 people die every day from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Placing a public access defibrillator in your establishment could save a life!

For 30 minutes we sat and watched and learned how rockets, carrying satellites, were launched into orbit. During that time his bus and came went while we sat transfixed in from of the television. When the show was over I drove him to school and he made it before the homeroom bell. This morning’s events reaffirmed my decision to lead the kind of life that I lead. I choose to lead a rich life. Yeah, I’m rich. Each day I savor the opportunity to go to work and help people. I savor the moments in life that escape many. Each and every day I look for the little things that add value and richness to this trip that we call life. Boy do I lead and amazing life. I take time to enjoy the clouds. I take the time to educate myself whenever I can. I take my time and enjoy moments, however fleeting, with friends and family. I appreciate the honor of travelling around the sun on earth every year. I figured out a long time ago that my life is only what I make of it. If I choose to chase the dollar or fleeting desires then I would always be unhappy.

Instead I chose to live an honest life where I value people and moments and experiences and everything that makes us, as humans, unique and wonderful. You can do this also. Cherish all that you hold dear. Pause to watch the sun set or a bird take flight. Watch a butterfly flutter. Listen to the ocean. Breathe in and enjoy the cool morning fall air. Be true to yourself, your loved ones and your values. Be honest, respectful and grateful. Life each day of your life like it is your last and that your time is short. Be the person that is proud of what you have done and not the one regretting what you did not do. Enjoy the day and what it has to offer. Be the person that you want to be and live the life of your dreams. This is your chance and your shot. Now go out there and make the most of it!

dd the perfect note to your next special occasion by inviting Mike Madawi of Smooth Musical Entertainment. Mike’s love of music and performing began when he was in middle school in Hilo, Hawaii. He started out as a drummer and played with various bands throughout his high school years. After graduation from Hilo High School in 1972, he was employed as a performer at a local Hawaiian resort. He continued to play at resorts with various bands before moving to Seattle in 1974. Mike went on to meet his wife, Julie, and they had four sons.
His customers get the personality of a live entertainer without the exorbitant expense of a band. Additionally, Smooth Musical Entertainment offers lighting and sound systems for functions, even if their musical services are not required.
In 1997, they were living back in Hawaii when wanderlust struck. The whole Madawi clan hit the road in an RV. They started in California and toured through thirty-eight states, traversing the continental US four times before settling down. They found themselves enjoying winters in Florida and decided to make Clermont their permanent home, building a house there in 2000. Back to work for Mike!
Smooth Musical Entertainment is a subsidiary of Madawi & Associates. Mike also owns and operates a business offering insurance and payroll services and solutions to small businesses. Mike is an Ambassador with the South Lake Chamber of Commerce and supports many local events and organizations, such as Relay for Life and Kiwanis.
His love of music had never died and gave birth to Smooth Musical Entertainment. Put an end to the old DJ versus band debate. With Mike, you get the best of both worlds. While he has the equipment and extensive music collection any good DJ would have, Mike also performs vocally.

focus » legal their buddies who are still only 16 or 17 years old. Although minors could be charged as an adult depending on the seriousness of the crime, what may be a slap on the wrist for the 17 year old for “kids horsing around” may end up being big trouble for the new adult, leading to a criminal record which can follow the new adult around for the rest of his life. For example, illegally setting off a fire extinguisher could actually lead to felony charges. Additionally, the new adult is also now required to support himself as it is no longer the parents legal responsibility unless there is a court order stating otherwise. For the 18 year old new adult, males must also register for the selective service. Just because a new adult “can buy a car” without the parent’s consent, does not mean he should not seek the parents advise. New adults may not always be experienced enough to understand that buying a car is a legal contract, binding, with legal ramifications. The new adult can sue on his own behalf and be sued. Samples of the types of contracts a new adult can enter into when just a day earlier he could not included school loans, car loans, employment contracts and rental contracts. o, your son or daughter has just turned 18 years old, a “new” adult. Turning 18, the “age of majority” in Florida, is one of many milestones to come and is generally when one legally becomes an adult. A person under 18 can become an adult via a legal process called “emancipation.” Emancipation is not exactly an easy process, however, once completed the minor, regardless that he is under the age of 18, will also be an adult without the benefit of being protected under the laws as a minor. Parents and new adults should be aware that along with the joys of being an adult, there are

many new legal responsibilities. What can new adults do? Well, they are still legally too young to drink alcohol, as you must be 21 years old in Florida. However, the new adult may now vote, enter into contracts, make a Last Will and Testament, consent to medical treatment without the approval of the parent and may live independently, outside of the parent’s control. Sounds great. BUT, slow down, stop and think. The new adult will also be responsible and charged as an adult for any crimes he commits, even if they are with
to be legally binding, some contracts may be verbal with nothing in writing. Whether written or verbal, the new adult needs to be sure that he understands the terms of what is expected of him prior to entering into the contract. The new adult also needs to understand what it is to have “good” credit and the importance of good credit. Unfortunately, many new adults enter into car contracts and credit card contracts without the experience necessary to understand the full responsibilities, having ruined their credit ratings while still in their teens! Bad credit can often take 5 to 7 years to clear up, sometimes even longer. Fortunately, there are ways in which the new adult can start building good credit: Working, paying bills on time, starting a savings account and using credit cards wisely. New adults should enjoy their new found “freedom” but understand that with freedom comes responsibility. ALS Dockside Barbecue Boats, Beer, and Barbecue W Article by: Heather Graham Photos by: Bonnie Whicher
hat’s more American than barbecue? Not many things. At ALS Dockside, customers come by Air, Land, or Sea to enjoy the delicious slow cooked meat and the traditional southern sides being served up at the waterfront location. As the most recent restaurant to open in the ALS series, Dockside joined ALS Landing and ALS Top Shelf on the banks of Lake Dora in the downtown Tavares Entertainment District. Diners arrive from all over in cars, golf carts, boats, and seaplanes. As the outside dining establishment is located right at the edge of the docks, overlooking the marina, boaters often stop by to get meals to go or to stay and listen to live music while enjoying an ice cold beer on the covered, wrap around deck. ALS Dockside uses a state of the art smoker which keeps the meat at the perfect temperature for the duration of the sixteen hour cooking process. Their menu includes smoked pork, turkey, ribs, chicken, and brisket. While everyone has a favorite, the tender, juicy brisket has quickly grown in popularity. Their menu includes sandwiches, served on a bun or on Texas Toast, which come with choice of a small side or chips. Sandwiches are affordably priced at $6.50. They also have a hot dog ($4.50) and
34
October 2011 myfocustv.com
corndog ($2.50) on the menu, making it popular for families. Their dinner platters include choice of meat with Texas Toast, and two sides starting at just $8.50. The traditional southern side dishes are so good, you’ll think your grandma made them! Along with the barbecue staples, like baked beans and cole slaw, ALS Dockside dishes up creamy macaroni and cheese and turnip greens, cooked up with pieces of their smoked turkey. They offer a combination of homemade and store bought barbecue sauces to compliment your smoky meat of choice! Save room for some of their delicious baked apples, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Wash down the yummy barbecue with one of their ice cold beers or wine coolers. Additionally, since they are located in the Downtown Tavares Entertainment District, guests can get their beverage in a to-go cup and stroll along the waterfront or visit one of the other downtown establishments. ALS Dockside is also now offering Party Packs to go. They come in a variety of sizes and are perfect for family dinners, picnics, or even tailgating! On October 22nd, ALS Dockside will be hosting a Hoedown, complete with country music and a roasted pig.

oity-Toity Mercantile celebrated a grand opening on October 1st. Located at 121 N. Highland Street in Mount Dora, the quaint and colorful building is home to a wonderfully eclectic mix of antiques, art, and orchids. Friends and owners, Lou Buigas and Ellen Batchlelor have an eye for the interesting and a passion for repurposing. I mean, who looks at an old rusty rake and says “That would make an awesome wine rack”? Or who would think of attaching the base of an old candlestick onto a Mason Jar and calling it a Redneck Wineglass? “Our goal when folks walk into the Hoity-Toity Mercantile is that they are “wowed” with the unique finds we have in the shop whether it is an orchid, an antique
or just a great piece of art, that perhaps may even be green.” states Buigas Everywhere you look you find something of interest. They have a little bit of everything – furniture, lamps, purses, jewelry, candleholders from old license plates, old musical equipment… There is everything from rust (these girls love rust) to feathers and sequins! In the back room is the “Country Store” where you will find the types of items you might have found in an old country general store. Scattered throughout are the beautiful orchids, from Paradise Orchids. Jack Batchellor, past President of the Orchid Society, sells the amazing plants and teaches
free orchid classes at Hoity Toity on the third Wednesday of every month during the winter. Lake ETV has taped several segments with Jack and will be airing them very soon.
Stop in Hoity-Toity and meet Lou and Ellen. They will give you a tour of their new shop and tell you about their upcoming classes.
We may be Hoity-Toity, but we are not stuffy. Monday-Saturday, 10 am- 5:30 pm
