THE LAKE MORTON AREA L akeland is a city of lakes with more than 38 named lakes within the city limits and Lake Morton, in particular, is one everyone can enjoy. Spend time in discovery of an afternoon adventure or a weekend away experiencing live entertainment. Spend time in appreciation of finer things or a relax with a quiet get-away for two and allow the Florida sun to perpetuate renewal.

The adventure awaits and is made easier than ever. All that is required is a picnic basket, loaf or two of bread, and a free spirit. Children always get more than they bargained for while on their visit around the lake as they interact with the swans. If you ever felt like you weren’t important, being stalked by

hungry waterfowl is a quick way to remedy the notion. This lake is a bird sanctuary, protected from boating and hook/line fishing, boasts an abundance of domesticated waterfowl.

If you’re in the mood for the finer tastes of life, the Polk Museum of Art is a world apart but right next door. Featuring Modern and Contemporary, Pre-Columbian, Asian, African, and Decorative Arts, the museum stimulates your visual senses with their examples of acquired objects in every color, style, and collection, all within the confines of four walls. The Modern and Contemporary Art area is by far the fastest growing. One of the founding principles still in practice today is that they collect art that

adds to the educational and artistic value of the permanent collection while reflecting community interests. With eight galleries and a sculpture garden, everyone is sure to find something to heighten their senses and stir their soul. The downstairs galleries or “front porch,” as locals refer to this area, sees the majority of tourist traffic. The upstairs galleries offer a more intimate venue of viewing the art. It also contains the student collections. Everyone can appreciate the incredible value for the $5.00 admission. For something on the quieter side of the spectrum, a weekend away at Lake Morton Bed and Breakfast, which is located across

the street next to the Lakeland Public Library, provides the opportunity to check out a book, grab a quilt, a vanilla chi tea, and jet off to anywhere but here. Built in 1926 the building has been in existence for 60 years and boasts 3,000 square feet of living area. The Inn has been in business and licensed for 20 years. Divided into four suites, all have private entrances and a collection of both modern necessities and nostalgic history. No matter your mood, Lake Morton in historic downtown Lakeland offers you an array of possibilities for family time, a get-away either alone or for two, or a dazzling experience for the eyes. Tack on the refreshing Florida sun and all that is left to ask is, “How soon can we go exploring?”

CHANUKAH FESTIVAL IN DOWNTOWN LAKELAND C STORY BY: CHERYL JOHNSTON | PHOTOS BY:CHABAD

habad of Lakeland hosted Polk County residents at its second annual public Menorah lighting on December 20, 2011 in celebration of Chanukah.

For those unfamiliar, Chanukah is the eight-day Jewish festival of rededication, also known as the festival of lights. It begins on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev and is probably one of the best-known Jewish holidays since it occurs close to Christmas. The celebration began when a successor of Alexander the Great, Antiochus IV, began to severely oppress Jews, denied them the practice of their religion, and defiled their Temple. Two groups joined forces to revolt. At the time of the rededication, the Greeks had defiled all but a little oil needed to light the menorah in the Temple, which was supposed to burn throughout the night every night. Miraculously, even though there was only enough oil to burn for one day, it burned for eight, exactly the amount of time needed to prepare a fresh supply. An eightday festival was declared to commemorate this miracle of the oil, not the war victory. Rabbi Moshe Lazaros directed the event on Tuesday, the first night of Chanukah (also written Hanukkah and Chanukkah) this year. The fun at the free community event in the Kryger Overlook Park on Massachusetts

Avenue began at 5:00 p.m.

Attendees enjoyed lively Chanukah music, chocolate Chanukah Gelt (coins), a Menorah kit and Dreidel to take home, and activities such as face painting, balloons, guess the Dreidels game, crafts and a raffle. Hot, delicious homemade Latkes (potato pancakes) with applesauce and warm beverages were served, compliments of Chabad. Hot dogs, Sufganiyot (Israeli-style jelly donuts), cotton candy and beverages were available for purchase. At 6:00 p.m. in the park overlooking Lake Mirror, the giant 9-foot Menorah was kindled, followed by a few words from honored guests, Lakeland Mayor Gow Fields and Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. From the smiles on faces and the sounds of laughter and lively conversation, it was obvious that this first night of Chanukah was a joyous time for those in attendance. For more information, sponsorship opportunities, or to volunteer to help at the 3rd annual event, please contact Chabad of Lakeland at (863) 510-5968 or visit the center at 3500 South Florida Ave. Suite 3, Lakeland, FL 33803.

WENDY PLANT NAMED SECRETARY OF US ASSOCIATION FOR SMALL BUSINESS & ENTREPRENEURSHIP WRITTEN BY: CHERYL JOHNSTON

U

niversity of South Florida Polytechnic is a school with an active and community-engaged faculty.

One of those is Wendy Plant, Business Development Manager for USF Poly’s Blue Sky technology business incubation program, who recently accepted the appointment as the Secretary for the Unites States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE). With degrees from Rollins College and University of Tampa, Plant is highly qualified to serve. She has taught in entrepreneurship and business management. Her responsibilities with Blue Sky were definitely an asset in the consideration for

appointment to the USASBE position. From her office at Blue Sky West and through other community interaction, her role includes advising business incubation clients. She also supports development of student groups and programs involved in entrepreneurship work. Plant described her reaction to the new responsibilities, saying, “I am honored to accept this appointment to the USASBE board. USASBE is the premier professional academic organization for advancing and supporting entrepreneurship education in the world. I’m looking forward to promoting Blue Sky and USF Polytechnic within its membership of more than 1000 members from colleges, universities,

businesses and nonprofit organizations and to bringing their cutting-edge research, best practices and teaching methods back to Blue Sky’s clients and USFP’s students. This association directly aligns with Blue Sky’s mission of becoming the leading catalyst for new venture development and experiential education in the Tampa Bay region. My priority is to benefit our local community through my association with this national organization.” USASBE exists to advance the discipline of entrepreneurship. A membership of more than 1000 members from universities and colleges, for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations, and the public sector qualifies it as the largest independent, professional, academic organization in the world. The organization’s professional diversity enhances its impact in fostering new business in communities nationwide. As the first public business technology incubators in Polk County, USF Polytechnic’s Blue Sky staff and facilities are dedicated to attracting and nurturing entrepre-

neurial businesses in which the university’s faculty and students can interact and help to develop technology applications that benefit the businesses. USFP Blue Sky, established in 2010, has locations in Lakeland, Winter Haven and Wauchula. The incubated companies have opportunity to use the resources of USF Polytechnic and of the various business development networks so well established in Polk County and regions beyond. As to Plant’s appointment, Dr. Rebecca White, USASBE’s president elect and Walter Distinguished Chair of Entrepreneurship at the University of Tampa explained her rationale in Plant’s selection for this important role. “It is critical to USASBE that we have someone in this position who deeply understands the entrepreneurship education community. Wendy has been involved in entrepreneurship education at the collegiate level for a number of years and is a perfect fit. We are very pleased she has accepted this nomination.”

Focus Celebrates Tenth Anniversary

Ten years ago this month, Focus Magazine published its first issue. It’s hard to believe how quickly that time has passed. As we look back over the stories we’ve covered, one emotion overwhelms us - gratefulness. We’re grateful for you - our readers, advertisers, vendors, and contributors. From one edition in 2002 to the six we publish monthly now, it’s been a growing and learning experience. Just like any business, we’ve faced challenges and experienced some ups and downs. Thankfully, mostly ups. But here we are today, still thrilled to be doing what we love - sharing your joys and connecting our community. Thank you, Lakeland (and Brandon, Plant City, Winter Haven, Lake County, and South Tampa) for your support and encouragement, for your cooperation and enthusiasm, for your suggestions and critique - your input has been critical to our company. We feel privileged to report our community good news and honored that you trust us to do it right. We could not have done it without you. And it seems like “thanks” is just not enough to show our appreciation. We’ve tried to help in practical ways, too.

As we’ve grown, we’ve worked to add tools to help our advertisers and our readers utilize the media we present to their best advantage. For example, bi-weekly e-blasts keep folks reminded of local events, great deals at restaurants, and business specials. We also post coupons on myfocuscoupons.com, just in case you’ve missed or deleted an e-blast. We all enjoy reading your comments on our Facebook fanpage and we’ve been excited to see how many more of you are following regularly. You are the heartbeat of this magazine, so please keep those comments coming. We’ve strived to make our websites user friendly and we’ve incorporated periodic Focus TV segments for your interest. This year our goal is to provide video tours of every advertiser so our readers can go inside and be inspired to buy local. Like any small business, we’ve faced challenges through the years and we understand the difficulties of a tougher economic climate. Thank you for continuing to believe in our mission and for helping our community to stay connected as you’ve shared your events, stories, trials, challenges, and triumphs. The Focus TV Crew

Speaking of challenges, we had a goal this year. To bond our staff together a little more, we planned to tackle “11 Big Adventures” in 2011. Sometimes plans from one year have to roll over into the next. Such is the case with our big adventures dream. We started strong by go-cart racing, parasailing, deep-sea fishing, BOINGing (trampolining), and paintballing together (and we’ve heard that you liked the reports). But busy schedules, publication deadlines, and family obligations meant we had to postpone some. So, in 2012 this plan continues. Focus editorial content has always been built around our readers’ suggestions for great stories and their feedback. What touches us most is how you respond to specific issues throughout the year. We always have fun planning the cover shoots for the new Strawberry Festival Queen and Court and for our Makeover issue. We’re always touched with the appreciation shown by the four Makeover winners each year and we love

10

celebrating their new looks at the evening’s dinner. This year was especially touching to us because of the death of winner Vicki Hannah, Her son Taylor still holds a special place in our hearts. We love firsts, too, and had a great time showcasing the 1st Annual Cutest Kids contestants on Facebook and in the magazine. We’re expecting it to be an even bigger event this year. We have a responsibility to report on as much local news as we can fit into the magazine each month. To do this, we will strive to build our advertising base so we can add more editorial content, as this is what makes that possible. Here’s a shout out to those loyal advertisers who run ads with us each month. That loyalty makes Focus possible.

To celebrate our Ten Year Anniversary, we have a plan and we hope you will join us.

8th Anniversary Party

If there is one thing our readers, advertisers, and the subjects of our stories have taught us, it’s the power of giving back and of caring about our neighbors, especially when there’s a need. Our plan this year involves an effort to benefit the United Food Bank of Plant City through an adjunct to their annual signature fundraiser, the Celebrity Chef Dinner. Join us Thursday, February 16, 2012 for our Annual Reader’s Choice Awards when we will recognize the winners from the votes cast by locals for favorite restaurants in several different categories.

11 Adventures, Offshore fishing trip

This evening also involves the monthly After Hours celebration with the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, which makes it one of the largest Thursday night gatherings of the year. Several hundred usually attend to mix and mingle and have a little fun. We’d like you to be there.

9th Anniversary Party

To help the United Food Bank, we encourage everyone to make a donation as they enter the party at Keel and Curley Winery on the night of the 16th. The celebration will include live entertainment and great food from some of the local favorites. It’s a great chance to catch up with your friends in the community and it’s a great cause.

Focus softball team.

We also encourage you to purchase tickets for the Celebrity Chef Dinner, scheduled for Saturday, February 18 at the Trinkle Center, and also to consider becoming a sponsor. Once again, Lakeland, we’re proud to serve this wonderful community. Without you, there would be no Focus. Here’s to even greater years ahead. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Alice Hunt

Economic Optimism for 2012 Story by Cheryl Johnston

Alice Hunt is ready to pass the gavel of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce to a new leader for 2012. She’s also very enthusiastic about what’s in store for the local business community this year.

14

JANUARY 2012 focuslakeland.com

Those who have worked with her offer high compliments for a job well done. As the outgoing Board of Directors chairwoman and President of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, Hunt has been privy to a close-up perspective of the local economy and commercial growth. Combine that with her personal career experience with Hunt Construction of Central Florida, Inc. in project management and get excited about what she sees as a great year ahead. In her Christmas wish to Chamber members, she wrote: “Surviving the past few years of the economy has been tough for local businesses, but through it all, our spirit has remained strong...” Hunt also has responsibility for managing 28 properties, commercial and residential, as president of Hunt Properties, LLC. Obviously, she’s a busy woman. As she focuses forward now on her role as Vice-President of Hunt Construction and other community projects, we wanted readers to know more of Alice Hunt. We also asked her to reflect back on the year as Chamber president. Enjoy reading about a woman who loves her community and who believes that continued economic growth comes when people work together to make it happen. Focus: Happy New Year, Alice! Can you tell us a little about yourself, family, and background? Hunt: My family consists of my husband Chuck and our children - Neil, Alyssa, sonin-law Michael and our daughter Abby, and one grandchild Kylee. We attend Victory Assembly Church. My father is retired military so I have lived all over the world, including two years in Japan. My mother is fourth generation in Lakeland. She grew up on Orange Street, her father an insurance agent. So when my father retired, we landed here. Her brother is Joe Mitchell; his name is inside the Harrison School for the Arts...the Joseph P. Mitchell Gallery. My family members were all educators. Focus: How about your own education? Hunt: My degree in Education and Specialized Early Learning is from the University of South Florida. I taught school for five years before my husband’s business began to grow. So, I stopped teaching to serve as Vice-President of Hunt Construction, which specializes in new commercial and residential and remodeling

work in both categories as well. I’m also President of Hunt Properties and manage 28 of our rental, commercial and residential properties. Focus: How did you become involved with the Chamber? What was your prior experience in this realm? Hunt: I became involved in the Chamber for business. We have been members for 20 years or so, but I became more active to build business. The residential market was changing a bit and our company needed to market the fact that we do commercial work. I was nominated to be on the board five years ago by Ford Heacock. Fortunately that board accepted me and through the years moved from Education Committee Chair (2 years) to chair-elect and then chair. Joe L. Ruthven and his executive committee

selected me for chairmanship and for that I am grateful. Previously I had been involved with the Polk County Builders Association, the Florida Homebuilders Association and Central Flroida Speech and Hearing. Although I focused on education activities, I have chaired and worked also with the Political Action Committees for many years. Focus: Would you give us an overview of the organization’s personality and membership requirements? Hunt: There are no membership requirements, just a fee to join. 85% of the Chamber’s membership is small business, but there are many large businesses including Publix and Geico. Every education institution is a member as well. Sheri Nickell sits on the board, as well as Polk State College and Southeastern at this time. Focus: Describe your work in with Hunt Construction. I married into construction and our business grew so quickly that it benefitted us for me to work in our own company. For Hunt Construction, I have oversight for the office, customer care, and marketing. I do not build because I don’t know enough to know when

things are not right, but Chuck does. Chuck is a Class A general contactor and does the building, scheduling and working with subs. During renovations, I work with customer care and am often at the jobsite. Focus: How do you spend your time when you’re not working? Hunt: In my free time I garden (large fruit and vegetable and herb gardens) and cook. And run. I have participated in the New York half-marathon with my daughter and the Disney Twilight of Terror 15k with my children. I am still involved with the Pac at the builders associations, as well as serve on the board of Central Florida Speech and Hearing. This year I will serve as chair of the Chamber Foundation and the Chairman’s Circle. Focus: What do you enjoy most about the work you’ve done with the Chamber? Hunt: The Chamber has so many balls in the air on any given day. I have enjoyed everything I have had to do. I particularly have enjoyed and appreciated the ribbon cuttings... there is nothing more exciting to me (in a business that requires growth) than to see new business start up. The exposure for any business is great when becoming involved with the Chamber. There are networking opportunities, professional development opportunities and many sponsorship and advertising opportunities. I cannot imagine NOT being a member of the chamber and NOT participating in the activities.

Focus: Are there particular Chamber projects or efforts that you enjoy more than others? Hunt: I have also enjoyed the ability to take strong stands on behalf of our membership as needed. Businesses need as much support and voice at the local and state level as possible. Focus: What do you enjoy most about the Lakeland community? Hunt: I love the Lakeland Community. We are blessed to live in a community where the business community is so benevolent and generous. We are blessed to live in a community where the leaders of each education institution are engaged with the business community and dedicated to educating a relevant work force. We are blessed to have a mayor who loves his city and his God. And finally, we are blessed to live in a community with a hometown business that is so generous in so many areas...Publix........ Focus: Where do you see yourself five years from now? Hunt: In five years? Well, look what happened in just the past five years...this time five years ago I attended my first Chamber board meeting. I never would have dreamed........... Focus: Can you tell us about your optimism for 2012? Hunt: I’m excited for every business because we have seen things pick up a bit. New construction is getting busier and commercial projects that had been placed on the back burner are now ready to get going again. Chuck has an excellent reputation and we benefit from repeat business and good word-of-mouth referrals. December business was definitely up and we see confidence coming from every angle. It’s going to be a great year. We agree, Alice. It just feels like there’s more confidence in the air. People have decided to make something new happen in 2012 and it’s a tangible attitude of “can do.” Thank you for the role you’ve played this year and for those we know you will continue in - Chamber member, family woman, and proud citizen of Lakeland.

KING’S COURT GOWNS A WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR FLUMERFELT

twirl on the twinkling dance floor at her high school prom. An escorted walk down a petal laden aisle towards the love of her life. A celebration with family and friends of her journey into womanhood. What do all of these moments have in common?

Girls and women across the world wait and long for these memory-making experiences because of what they signify and their need for a dress as special as the occasion. For three years, King’s Court Gowns in Bartow, FL has clothed many in gowns, petticoats and shoes for an array of life-changing affairs. When DeeDee Jones, owner and operator of King’s Court Gowns, established the business in 2009, she was inspired by what attendees of a ball or king’s court would wear to such an event, thus the business’ slogan: “Gowns that make you feel and look like a princess at a pauper’s price.” Jones’ mission is to offer clients affordable dresses without sacrificing quality. King’s Court Gowns is the only business in the area that sells handmade gowns. “That

16

means our customers are not obligated to buy off the rack. This allows them to have some control over their dress, such as custom sizing, choice of color, straps or strapless, zipper or lace-up closure, etc. They also don’t have to pay for expensive alterations later because the dress will be custom made to their exact measurements,” Jones explained. Jones operates by appointment-only. This allows customers to receive special attention and have their desires heard to insure the clients’ visions for the special occasions can be brought to life. The private showroom features rack upon rack of detailed gowns, each stitched together with unique purposes in mind. Along one wall hang shelves adorned with shoes to complete each client’s look. Not only do clients have the privilege of a one-on-one consultation with Jones featuring unique gowns, but they also get to enjoy the lower prices that King’s Court Gowns offers. A majority of the gowns sold at King’s Court Gowns are priced under $400. The entire selection of prom dresses is priced under $250. Also, the event registry that Jones keeps means that the same gown will not be

sold, even in a different color, to a client also attending a specific event. “I want women to understand that they don’t need to spend a fortune to have a beautiful dress for their special day. I want women to know that they don’t have to ‘settle’ for a gown that is off-the- rack instead of the gown they really want… Most women purchase a gown for a once in a lifetime or very rare occasion. This experience should be special. Ultimately, I want every woman to end up with their perfect dress for their perfect day,” expressed Jones. Whether you are searching for the gown you have also wanted to wear on your big day, or just want a unique piece to add to your wardrobe, King’s Court Gowns will definitely not disappoint. King’s Court Gowns holds memberships with the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, the

American Business Women’s Association, and the Polk County Wedding Association. Jones herself is a Lakeland Chamber of Commerce Chamber Champion and the Chairman of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce’s Tuesday Leads Group. SHINGETSU T alk about Fresh! Shingetsu Sushi Bar & Grill located in Lakeland, Florida is not your typical Japanese cuisine restaurant.

For sushi lovers, this sushi bar & grill has one of the most impressive selections anywhere. The cool thing is that if sushi isn’t working for your taste buds on that particular visit, there’s a variety of other popular eats. Kszuko Kay Smith and Walter Smith, owners of this fine establishment, have integrated a combination of appetizers and dinners that range from wings to New York strip steak. In addition, Shingetsu boasts a full bar selection to quench any thirst. Kay even has her own selection of flavored sake wine and

SUSHI BAR & GRILL STORY AND PHOTOS: ALDO TREVINO regular wine. Check out the amazing deals during Happy Hour Monday-Thursday from 5-7 p.m. The Smiths have enjoyed bringing authentic Japanese cuisine to the Lakeland area with great success. Shingetsu (shin-gets), meaning “new moon”, has much competition within a two-mile radius. Diners can find seven or eight other sushi restaurants nearby, but all have yet to come close to being a real Japanese Bar & Grill restaurant like Shingetsu. “We are a real Japanese restaurant,” said Kay. “That’s why we have survived the rough times through this economy. People enjoy having fresh tasting ingredients when it comes to food and we can provide that and that’s what keeps us in business.” I had the chance to experience a sushi roll

called “The Shaggy Dog” and wow, talk about fresh! From every angle and every bite with the sweet soy sauce touching my taste buds, there was an explosion of flavors, which can’t be explained unless you experience it yourself. As owner and chef, Kay has created a number of sushi rolls with custom homemade sauces to complement. I quickly found my new hangout spot in Lakeland to relax on weekends. While enjoying my “Shaggy Dog” I met one of the regular customers, Grandy Street. He was won over with Kay’s amazing personality and the way she caters to her guests. Grandy enjoys bringing his family in for dinner at least twice a week or for take out when he’s on the go. When I asked Grandy how long he had been coming to Shingetsu, without hesitation he said, “Kay won me over as a customer, and now a friend, with her ability to cater to our needs. She loves to carry on a conversation with my family and me. She really cares about what goes on in our lives every time we come in. She even has opened her doors just for me as she was closing. We

love this place and it’s the best place to eat in Lakeland.” Shingetsu Sushi Bar & Grill located at 4231 South Florida Ave in Lakeland, FL is the place to be. Have a special occasion coming up? Have them cater your event or birthday party. Enjoy the outdoors patio seating, too. Make sure you don’t miss the free sake wine tasting every second Saturday of the month with the purchase of ten dollars per person.
