Letter From The publisher I am so excited this month to share some of the great changes which are occurring in my life and with FOCUS Magazine. First of all, I am thrilled to announce that Shelly Gerig has accepted the title of Editor In Chief ! Shelly was a part of my team right in the beginning, when we were originally launching the magazine, and has remained connected through the years, as a writer, a sales person, and a loyal fan and supporter! I am lucky to have Shelly as my friend, and we are all lucky to have her take on a bigger role in this publication! Boleros Cigar and Wine Bar

he Downtown Tavares Waterfront Entertainment District will welcome its first cigar and wine bar to its mix in just a few weeks. Coming early June, Boleros Cigar and Wine Bar will open on the corner of South Joanna Avenue and Ruby Street, on the lower level of the newest tower of the Lakeview Inn. The 1200 square foot space will offer a generous selection of premium wines and craft beers. A variety of fine, quality cigars will be on display in the custom designed, cedar-lined, walk in humidor. Cigar aficionados can enjoy their favorite stogie with their choice of beverage inside the air-conditioned bar (equipped with air purifiers) or outside on the shaded patio where they can enjoy the lake view. While cigars have traditionally been more of a draw for men, lately the popularity of cigar smoking with women has been on the rise.
This is evidenced by the fact that Boleros is actually owned by two women. Heather Graham and Denisa Pitman have teamed up to bring the only cigar and wine bar to the golden triangle area. Why Tavares? “That part was easy,” Graham explains, “Tavares is the only Entertainment District in Lake County. People come here to stroll the streets and explore the different restaurants and bars the beautiful downtown has to offer.” Boleros is scheduled to open the first week of June and will be open daily. They will have packaged beer and wine and cigarettes available for purchase as well, to accommodate hotel guests and boaters. They will also offer wine, beer, and cigar clubs in the near future. ove fruity festivals paired with Jazz and Blues music? Lake County’s first annual BlueZberry festival was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday. Blueberries were abundant throughout. The blueberry pancake breakfast was just

delicious with friendly servers greeting guests. Walking through all the vendor booths made it tough to decide who had the best blueberries, but it was fun to give them all a try!
A young entrepreneur, Emily McCormack, helped sell creative Blueberry Pie Pops. The bizarre Bounce was this crazy ‘bubble’ that kids and adults were welcome to jump in and try to stand up. The trick is that it’s in a pool, so it’s really hard to do it, so you
laugh a lot! Lawn Mower obstacle courses and a Cornhole contest were part of the fun as well. Local high school bands played a variety of tunes along with the finale, Ruth King, who gave the audience a performance that inspired and relaxed the soul. Can’t wait until next season for more blueberry pie! The BlueZberry Festival was organized by the Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce. Meyers’ achievements include being a member of the Kiwanis of Clermont and graduate of Leadership Lake. She volunteers at New Beginnings, Cornerstone Hospice and the Boys and Girls Club. Three cheers for Dr. Alan Wong, head of Modern Orthodontics in Clermont. His recent renovations were celebrated by the Chamber’s Ambassadors. Wong’s office was nominated earlier this year for the Chamber’s Revitalization Award for the improvements he had made to his office located at 1455 E. Highway 50 in Clermont. Michelle Michnoff, vice president and client relationship manager at BankFIRST in Clermont, was recently named board secretary at the South Lake Chamber of Commerce. Michnoff has served a chair of the Chairman’s Gala and is chair of the Community Relations Committee in addition to serving on other Chamber committees and events.
RIBBON CUTTINGS Chamber Ambassadors joined the Orlando Magic cheerleaders to welcome the newest Dunkin’ Donuts in South Lake, located at 17330 Highway 50 in Clermont. Goodwill Industries of Central Florida recently opened its newest retail store and job center at 1855 S. Grand Highway in Clermont. Chamber Ambassadors celebrated with a ribbon cutting. It is the first Goodwill store built almost 100 percent with American-made materials. Goodwill plans to use the model for future construction. The Chamber welcomed new member Hairazors Salon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony recently. The salon is at 2521 S. Highway 27 in Clermont. More details are available at www.myhairazors.com.
CHAMBER’S ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT HELD AT DISNEY’S OSPREY RIDGE The South Lake Chamber of Commerce held its annual Howard Stockton Scholarship Golf Tournament presented by Walt Disney World at Disney’s acclaimed Osprey Ridge Golf Course. The tournament benefits deserving South Lake students and is named to honor a previous Chamber executive director. Pizza Fest a Huge Success
Proceeds benefit New Beginnings
N
ew Beginnings of Lake County hosted their 3rd Annual Pizza Fest on May 11th. The event was a huge success thanks to the many vendors, volunteers and customers who participated in this tasty event. Eleven of the area’s best pizza restaurants took part, including Spiro’s, Napoli’s, R&C Deli, Hungry Howie’s, Lil’ Anthony’s, Flipper’s, Goomba’s, Little Caesars, Stone Creek, Oven Fired Pizza and Shongololo (formerly Diroio’s). A special thanks to WalMart for providing space and support. All proceeds from the Pizza Fest will go to fight hunger and homelessness in our community. New Beginnings of Lake County is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization. Since
its inception in 2007, New Beginnings has offered programs that provide food, clothing and transitional housing, along with job and life skill training to individuals and families that have become homeless or are in need. The United Way of Lake & Sumter County celebrates new location Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home A Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans parade was held in downtown Tavares on May 18th to honor our Vietnam Veterans for their years of service and sacrifice in the 40th anniversary of the year the U.S. declared end of the Vietnam War. Following the parade, a recognition ceremony was held in Wooton Park. The Keynote speaker was Capt. Charlie Plumb, USN, a POW who spent almost six years in captivity.
The United Way of Lake & Sumter Counties’ Open House showcased their new permanent location in Leesburg. The buildings, purchased by United Way’s Foundation, also offers a community room available for rent as well as office space for lease. Florida Department of Education Commissioner, Dr. Tony Bennett will be the featured keynote speaker at United Way’s Annual Meeting & Luncheon at Lake Receptions on May 29. Talk of the Town Safe Climate Coalition presents Annual Report Safe Climate Coalition of Lake County, Inc. presents the annual Quality of Life Report: A Snapshot of Lake County 2013. This is a collaboration of over 30 agencies and organizations within the county that focus on making our community a better place to live, work and play. The Early Learning Coalition of Lake County has been privileged to be a recipient of several Disney grants for the “Raising A Reader” program. The Coalition’s Executive Director, Ms. Lesha Buchbinder commented that “the Raising A Reader program is very important for our young children as they prepare for kindergarten. It not only encourages parents to read to their children but it also strengthens the bond between children and parents and makes reading FUN. The epic three day event took place April 26th28th throughout downtown Leesburg and the surrounding area. The fun kicked off on Friday with bikers roaring into town and filling the downtown streets with row after row of bikes. People came from near and far to enjoy the jam-packed line up of live entertainment. From live music on multiple stages throughout the city blocks, to a Poker Run, a Night parade, tattoo expo, and demo rides, there was something for everyone! Friday night’s main events included the traditional Ms.Bikefest bikini contest, followed by Stephen Pearcy live on the Gator Harley-Davidson Stage.
The party picked right back up on Saturday and continued throughout the day. Live music continued, indoors and out, with performances fom Bobby Blackmon, Hayfire, Justin Heet, and headliner Candlebox in the evening. Over fifty different musical performers were included in this year’s line up! Event goers were entertained by street performers, drill teams, a poker run, and a Mr. LuckyMan Hot Body Contest! Biker Games were hosted by the US Military Vets Motorcycle Club of Lake County. Fun contests such as hot dog eating and water balloon toss entertained the crowds!

Q. Where are the interest rates headed-up or down? A. Forecasters have predicted rates would increase the last 2 years, but they have not. We predict they will stay low through 2013, but start to increase next year as the economy improves. Don’t miss out in locking in a fixed rate now for 15 or a 30 year mortgage! Q. How difficult is it to get a mortgage? A. The only difficult part of getting a mortgage is the amount of documentation required. Just when you think there is not a single piece of documentation left to provide, we will ask you for more. It is not much different to qualify for a loan than before, but jut be prepared to provide what is needed in a TIMELY MANNER in order to close. Q. Are values declining? A. Across the nation values are stabilizing or increasing slightly and Lake County is no different. The reason is simple-Supply and Demand. Demand is up as interest rates are low and inventory is shrinking. We won’t see the abnormal appreciation rates of 2005 due to increased regulation and moderate consumer confidence. Q. Is this a good time to buy? A. Since interest rates are low and prices are affordable, it is the first time in years that you can actually own and pay less monthly than what you would pay in rent. BONUS: mortgage payments will remain consistent, but your rent could increase year after year. The tax benefits are important to consider as well! Q. Should I consider selling now or wait until later? A. The word is out that it’s a sellers’ market and there are multiple buys and currently there is a limited inventory. Lake and Sumter counties have 2717 homes currently on the market. That is about ½ of what was available in 2009! Q. Is building a new home the way to go? A. Other buyers are exploring the possibility of building since the inventory is at a low point which also creates new job opportunities that help our local economy. Partnering realtors and builders could mean better educating clients with the options available in the market. Every client’s needs are unique and researching with a realtor and builder will help determining what is your best move. Q. I am not ready to buy yet, what will happen in a few years? A. The market will still be hot! Since it is recovering, interest rates may pick up and prices may be higher. The good news is that chances are with a stronger economy; you could be making more money or have better job security. The best advice is to keep your credit in check or determine how to improve it if needed. This will put you in a position for the lowest rates available when you are ready to purchase. Q. Short sale/Foreclosure/Bankruptcy. Any hope for a home in this market? A. Absolutely! Owner financing and lease options are possible in some cases. You may qualify in as little as 2 years in a bankruptcy or 3 years after a foreclosure or short sale. If you experienced any of these credit challenges, it is best to re-establish your credit. Although you still have to wait the time required, I have seen clients gain a credit score of 700+ scores within 6 months of it happening. Q. Is there a set amount to pay for a loan? A. With so many options, there is something for just about everyone. First there are options where you can buy a home with no money down or as little as 3.5-5% of the sales prices. Closing costs usually run 3-6% of the sales price. Motivate sellers may cover all or some of those costs for you. In some circumstances, the closing costs can be rolled into the loan. Q. Does the buy pay the realtor? A. We get this question a lot! Buyers do NOT pay real estate commissionsthe seller does. If the seller has contracted to pay a 6% sales commission, 3% will go to their agent (the realtor with the sign in the yard) and the other 3% will go to the buyer’s realtor.
Tips of the Trade: 1. Once you apply for a mortgage do not do anything to jeopardize your credit rating. Do not purchase or finance anythingwe mean anything- until the loan process is completed and you have closed.

ver the last ten years or so, various state legislators across the country have attempted to limit the rights and remedies of patients who are the victims of medical malpractice. Years ago, the Florida legislature passed into law a statute that limits the amount of damages a victim of medical malpractice may receive. In that regard, the maximum award for noneconomic damages in Florida in a medial malpractice case is $250,000.00 against any particular physician and $750,000.00 against any hospital. In 2003, the Texas legislature was able to pass Proposition 12 which amended the Texas Constitution to limit non-economic damages in medical malpractice cases to $250,000. According to those that were supporting the passage of such Proposition, they contended that there would be more doctors in rural Texas communities and lower health care costs. However, a panel of professors from Northwestern University, the University of Illinois, and the University of Texas concluded that the passage of Proposition 12 had absolutely no effect on health care spending. In fact, it resulted in Texas physicians ordering more medical tests than they did before the cap was imposed, resulting in health care spending increasing

at a rate higher than the rest of the country. According to a recent article published in CHEST, The Journal of the American College of Chest Physicians, the passage of damage caps in medical malpractice cases does absolutely nothing to make health care safer or cheaper. Similar to various state legislatures, our Federal Government has been aggressively attempting to put damage caps in place and impose other limitations on medical malpractice victims. In that regard, Senator Paul Ryan (R-Wis), the Chair of the House Budget Committee, is once again attempting to balance the Federal Budget by further restricting the rights of medical malpractice victims. His “The Path to Prosperity: A Blueprint for American Renewal” provides for limitations on non-economic damages and punitive damages, as well as various other changes, which make it more difficult for medical malpractice victims to have access to the Courts. Notwithstanding the lack of clear budgetary benefit and the personal hardships imposed by individuals injured or killed because of medical malpractice, house republican leadership repeatedly includes these
restrictions on the state based justice system and their budget plans. According to the Institute of Medicine, approximately ninetyeight thousand (98,000) people die every year from preventable medical errors at a cost of nearly three billion dollars over ten years. This amount does not include the costs associated with those medical malpractice victims who survived the medical error. During the past two years, I have been a Member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Justice Association, Florida’s trial lawyer organization. Each year, we Consumer (Trial) Attorneys face tremendous opposition in Tallahassee during legislative session in
our attempts to maintain full access to the courts and defeat proposed legislation which attempts to limit patient’s rights. During the 2012 legislative session in Florida, law makers passed several bills pertaining to medical malpractice cases. Most of these new laws will make it more difficult to seek redress by a victim of malpractice. Despite significant opposition, my law firm and the Florida Justice Association is dedicated to making sure that our state legislators are reminded that accountability encourages safe health care and that patient’s rights should never be bargaining chips for their special interests.

s runners we love hitting the pavement and logging miles but often forget the importance of whole body training. Whole body training should consist of these 5 things: running, fueling, cross training, stretching and strength training. Following a training plan that includes all of these aspects will help you run faster, heal faster, and feel great doing it.
4. Strength training: This is important for endurance athletes, especially runners because we can suffer muscle wasting if we skip this part of training. I do a mixture of high speed plyometrics mixed with weight circuits working the full body. Plyometrics are high intensity jumping and rebounding drills, this would include the ever dreaded burpee.
1. Running: Sticking with a run schedule is important so that you build your endurance and not over stress your muscles on race day. When you don’t log the miles you can risk serious injury.
5. Fueling: This is one of the most important aspects of training because our bodies use the nutrients that we take in to fuel, recover and build. If we are lacking a proper diet our training will suffer. We need carbohydrates for energy, protein for recovery, and antioxidants for immune strength. 2. Cross Training: Allows you to work different muscles, while still building your endurance, this should include biking, swimming, rowing, cross country skiing, and plyometrics. Cross training can prevent fatigue while running, by properly resting different muscle groups. 3. Stretching: There is a lot of controversy over whether or not to stretch before a run, but you should listen to your body and do what feels right to you. I do not stretch prerun because I notice that I injure easier when I do, and I don’t run as strong, however I do stretch after running and am a big advocate for yoga and keeping your muscles long and lean.

cannot seem to stay out of Tavares these days. Well, part of the reason is I have decided to open another business there, a kitchen resale and consignment store. I figured since my illness last year has left me unable to run my small café bakery, I needed another avenue to channel my love for food, so the one thing I do know about is kitchenware; so as I was downtown Tavares preparing for our June 7th, 2013 grand opening I decided to stroll downtown and see what is new for lunch. WOW! There are a lot of new things going on and one thing is Pastore’s Pizza on Ruby Street in the new second phase of the Lakeview Inn. Steve Pastore and Henry Rogure have brought a taste of the Big Apple and over 23 years of experience to downtown Tavares. Rogure and
Pastore are not strangers to the Downtown Tavares Waterfront Entertainment District. Pastore has been renting Jet Ski’s at Al’s Landing since it opened and Rogure was the head chef at Al’s Dockside Barbeque which is now Al’s Sandbar. Good pizza does not have to be complicated it just needs to be good, I always say. Fancy pizza and over the top ingredients are hiding something like good dough and cheese. Pastore’s knows this and their simple menu with “old Italian family recipes” and the giant New York style pies with slices so big that you must fold them in half to hold them up. Pair this along with the best ingredients like “Grande Brand” cheese with simple classic toppings we know and love make for an
awesome pizza. Of course I wanted to try the pizza but I also wanted to try other menu items, yes the meatballs are heavenly these too are from an “old family” recipe. I ordered an Italian sub, you can have this sub hot or cold; I prefer my salami and pepperoni hot so I had my sandwich toasted with lettuce tomato provolone cheese and a dash of their balsamic vinegar it was the perfect combination. My husband and I normally eat out for dinner but this day we choose lunch and the lunch service was fast and fresh. My husband decided on the slice combo for lunch that was hot and ready on the table in less than 10 minutes. I guess that if you called ahead your

order would be waiting for you when you arrived. Any time of day or night Pastore’s is great for families, they do serve beer and wine and there is a large flat screen over the bar to catch a game or two. This business is a true family affair both Rogure and Pastore have a family member or two around tossing dough in front of the pizza oven right in the dining room or ready to greet you in the very casual dining room, which is open 7 days a week. There is indoor and outdoor seating with a great view of Lake Dora no matter where you sit. t is the beginning of watermelon season and if you don’t know just head to your local farmer’s market or roadside stand and you will see plenty of watermelon and cantaloupe. I have mixed emotions about the first fruit of the season I expect it to be the best but in actuality this year some of the watermelon is not as sweet as mid -summer melons. No problem watermelon can still be just as tasty if used as the main ingredients to a tangy watermelon salad, granita a grown up version of a slushee or even in a salsa. I remember as a child we would enjoy watermelon with a dash of salt here and there, now that I am older I am not a big fan of salt and know the amount of salt we used would properly land most of us in the hospital but it did get me to thinking of ways I could use the first fruit of the season. My watermelon salad is the perfect side dish to take to a family barbeque, work lunch or even add chilled salad shrimp for the perfect main course on a summer picnic. My family enjoyed this salad with both blue cheese and feta you can decide which taste you prefer the “bite” of the blue cheese or the creamy mild feta the choice is yours it is great either way. The mango and jimmica are also are in season and bountiful and are usually found next to or near watermelon in the grocery stores and at the local farmers market. Jimmica will give you the sweetness you are looking for and a firm but not to green mango will
round off the flavor and give the taste buds a treat that cannot be beat! The balsamic vinegar is the thing that brings this salad together and gives the fruit a great flavor, you don’t need much vinegar and you can also use flavored vinegar I used an Italian blend vinegar with fresh and organic herbs from a farmers market. The more fruit you add the better this salad gets I know watermelon is the star here so make sure there is more watermelon than anything else but go ahead be creative or not the choice is yours!
Wonderful Watermelon Salad 1 small round seedless watermelon (4cups) cubed ¼ cup tablespoons finely sliced red onion 1 small bunch of watercress (1/2 cup chopped) ¼ cup blue cheese crumbled or feta ¼ cup balsamic vinegar 1 ½ cup jimmica julienned 1 firm mango cubed 1 pint blueberries (optional) 1 pint strawberries (optional) sliced
Prepare all ingredients and combine in a large plastic bowl and toss with hands place lid over bowl and refrigerate 1-2 hours. Salad can be made a day ahead just make sure your fruit isn’t too ripe when making the salad so far in advance this so it will not break down overnight in the fridge. This recipe double and triples well just cut back on the vinegar and add to suit your taste.
