The Annual PLANT CITY CHRISTMAS PARADE will take place on Friday, December 3 rd. This year, the parade will start at 6 PM which is a half-hour earlier than in year’s past. It will wind though downtown Plant City.

CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATING CONTEST

Here is the way this works……Chamber businesses will decorate a Christmas tree in their place of business. You will have the opportunity to stop by and check out all the decorated trees and vote for the one you think is best. Now, here is the good part, after you have visited all the business that participate and you have voted for your favorite tree, you will drop off the card that the business will provide you with and bring that to the Chamber office, 106 North Evers Street. There it will be deposited in a box for a drawing that will take place on December 20 th. for a $150. VISA card which can be used anywhere VISA is accepted. And who can’t use a $150. he Daybreak Rotary of Plant City recently hosted the first annual Cracker Country Feast at the beautiful Walden Lake home of George and Cassandra Banning. Proceeds from this year’s wild game event will benefit the United Food Bank of Plant City and its continued efforts to feed the truly hungry in the Plant City community. According to event co-chair, George Banning, “The Daybreak Rotary has hosted a Cracker Country Feast for various cultural and vocational exchanges sponsored through Rotary International. These exchanges have been with Peru, Argentina, India, Denmark, and this year Sweden.”

ne hundred years ago on November 18th, in the small town of Winter Haven, Florida, a baby girl was born to a hard working couple Mack C. and Rosa Etta Clark Thompson. Mary Etta Thompson Surrency grew up under the watchful eye of her parents as one of two children. Surrency remembers playing as a young girl in the orange groves for which her father was caretaker. She recalls, “I mostly wanted to get away from my house where my momma would put us to work. I was a Daddy’s girl.” She remembers surviving diseases that seem foreign to us now, such as Typhoid Fever. “There were no immunizations back then,” Surrency reminisces.

Surrency married Grady Russell Thompson and they had one daughter, Audrey Elaine Thompson Gillespie (1936). After Surrency was widowed in 1947, she worked in the Keysville area grinding the edges of wooden packing crates used for oranges. Then she was a custodian at Pinecrest Elementary school for a few years. Later in life, she became Mrs. George Washington Surrency and they had another daughter, Nancy Louise Surrency (both of which are now deceased). After divorcing Mr. Surrency, and well into her 40s, she went to nursing school and earned her LPN license. She worked in a nursing

grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Surrency’s surviving daughter now cares for her mother and happily prepares her favorite same supper every night - grilled cheese and soup with a piping hot cup of black coffee. On November 20th the family will celebrate the matriarch’s 100 years of life at High Point Church of Valrico. In lieu of gifts, the family suggests a canned food donation and a single rose to make a flower arrangement from all of those who have known and loved Mary Etta Thompson Surrency.

he Area VI schools of eastern Hillsborough County are proactive when it comes to helping kids say “No” to drugs and other destructive behaviors.

The track and field oval at Turkey Creek Middle School was packed on Saturday, October 23 for the 6th Annual “Berry Smart – Don’t Start” Drug Prevention Walk, spearheaded by guidance counselors and school representatives. Annette Kilgore of the Springhead guidance department described the event as a “very family oriented half-day filled with some old-fashioned fun.” Through its Character in the Community outreach to homes, schools, and community, Hillsborough County Public Schools organizes events in which children can witness positive influences. The Charles E. Mendez Foundation sponsored alongside HCPS’s Area IV schools and the city of Plant City on this event, which typically takes place during national Red Ribbon Week. This campaign is a continuing tradition of displaying red ribbons to present a unified commitment towards the creation of a Drug-Free America.

On this day families rallied to offer support for the powerful message. They walked with their kids, they created activity stops and sold fundraiser items around the track, and they volunteered to serve.

Darrah Headley brought his son’s two young children, Alden and Destiny, to the event because “something like this is great for the budget.” Alden, 6, attends the Little Explorers Pre-K program and Destiny, 6, is at Walden Lake. He complimented HCPS as “a group of people who care enough to do events that support what we’re trying to teach our kids. They can’t have enough role models.” He was also thankful to be outdoors in the fresh air and to mingle with children and parents from other neighborhoods, saying, “Today we have so much technology and we’re so involved with our computers that we don’t even know our neighbors. This is a great event.” HCPS would like to thank this event’s community sponsors: C.E. lant City has big plans for its annual Relay for Life. You are part of the plan. Here’s how to help exceed last year’s incredible accomplishment.

Teams are forming now and meeting times are set at 6:30 p.m. in the Plant City High School Media Center for the following dates: November 15, December 13, January 24, February 21, March 14 and “Bank Night” is April 4th. The 2011 theme is “Curing Cancer … From Our City to Yours!” Groups from area schools, businesses, churches, civic organizations, and just plain friends/family entourages will camp out, chow down, play games, entertain, walk, encourage, and comfort each other when the teams join forces on April 8-9 at the PCHS football complex to “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.” Relay for Life of Plant City received some wonderful news at the recruitment meeting held October 23 at First Baptist Church. A $5,000 donation on behalf

of the Massachusetts-based Beveridge Family Foundation, Inc. (think Stanley Home Products) was presented to the sponsorship fund for our city’s efforts to cure cancer. What a great start!

Sponsorships begin at $250 and continue to the Gold Level at $7,500. Sponsors receive valuable local media exposure, so the sooner involved, the better. There’s also the just plain “feels good” satisfaction of making a difference in our little corner of the world. Plant City’s efforts are quite remarkable. At the 2010 Relay for Life, our community was the 4th largest contributor in Florida to the American Cancer Society’s annual cause. Sixty-six teams collected $243,000, including $21, 025 in sponsorships. The 2011 goal is $250,000. Will you help? The recent meeting was well attended and most were brought to tears when Dana Carpenter shared how much Relay for Life has meant to the family since the death of Megan, their inspiring 17-year-old

daughter. Megan went to be with her Lord in 2006, after a courageous five-year fight against a rare form of cancer that strikes only one in one each year. In her honor, adults and children visit the “Megan Tent” staffed by volunteer stylists for haircuts, manicures, shoulder massages, and the very special “Princess Makeovers.” This will be the 5th R4L event for the Carpenter family and friends Everyone in the room could relate because each had somehow been touched by cancer, either their own life or a loved one’s. Laughter replaced the tears when local teacher Mike Storter shared his story. Since being diagnosed 18 months ago with AML Leukemia, he has undergone a chemo, radiation, a bone marrow transplant, and of course, hair loss. He has just been re-diagnosed so will undergo another round of treatments. Yet, through it all, Storter’s faith, his sense of humor, and his level of compassion have increased. His battle now is all about helping others to walk through it and he encouraged

attendees by highlighting the amazing treatment advances. He believes “caregivers have the most difficult role” and ended by posing this question: “Which dollar will be the one that funds the cure? Will yours be the one? Will you form a team, hold a fundraiser, become a sponsor? Will you walk the track, light a luminaria, hold someone’s hand whose battling the beast now? As Dana Carpenter so aptly put it by quoting Lance Armstrong, “Be about the fight …” , and by quoting her cheerleading Megan, “God gives us what we can handle. We can do this. Together! Let’s Fight! ince 1961, the National Football League has sponsored a national skills contest called Punt, Pass, & Kick. It is a competition for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15, allowing youth to match up against their peers in five separate age divisions (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15) by punting, passing, and place kicking a football for distance and accuracy. This year, the Optimist Club of Plant City and the Plant City Parks and

Recreation Department held its local PPK competition on Saturday, September 25 at the Otis Andrews Sports Complex. The 54 local participants were part of more than three million boys and girls across the world have competed for a chance to advance to the finals to be held in January during halftime at an NFL playoff game. pproximately 350 supporters attended the 2nd Annual Strawberry Crest High School Calendar Girl Competition last month to encourage the 33 young women competing for the 13 titles. The judges had a tough job. The event, sponsored by SCHS’s Future Farmers of America chapter, creates excitement around school as freshmen to senior females decide whether to enter, what to wear, and how to prepare for the walk and the talk.

Susan Mayo is SCHS Career/Technical Department Head, an Agricultural/Natural Resources educator, and FFA sponsor who organized the fundraiser. Two students, Jennifer Morgan and Pedro Amaral, shared emcee duties for the evening and Paul Rubio sang the National Anthem. Amaral also sang to the finalists before winners were announced. As the girls walked across the stage, the emcees read their bios, which mention parents’ names, GPA, extracurricular athletics, clubs, and community service organization memberships. Judges score girls for overall beauty, self-confidence, pose and poise.

Prosperity Campaign Calls for Volunteers to Prepare Taxes at Free Tax Sites Written By: Cheryl Johnston

he Prosperity Campaign of Hillsborough County needs volunteers to help the county’s most vulnerable families and individuals with free tax filing assistance. Thirty-three tax sites throughout the county rely primarily on volunteers who do everything from coordinating site operations to serving as greeters/intake specialists to actually preparing the returns of folks who need some knowledgeable help. The two free filing locations in Plant City are located at Bruton Memorial Library and the Plant City Neighborhood Service Center. Between them, they are open days, evenings and Saturday. Both sites can use more volunteers. This collaborative effort among local public, private and non-profit organizations includes United Way, Hillsborough County Dept. of Family and Aging Services, the IRS, and multiple financial institutions and communitybased service organizations. The Prosperity Campaign’s purpose is to ensure clients can access free tax filing services through which they are able to claim valuable income-boosting tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. Financial education and coaching to empower individuals to better understand their options when it comes to spending, saving and borrowing is also available. The program’s goal is to help people build assets, use credit wisely, manage debt successfully and ultimately achieve financial stability. Volunteers are needed from late January through April 15th. During the 2010 filing season, 330 volunteers assisted in the preparation of 9,320 returns. Although volunteers are not required to work a

certain number of hours, they are asked to commit to work with their chosen site for the duration of the season if possible and to consider working at least one shift a week, which is usually about 2-4 hours. All necessary training generally begins in late October-early November and is ongoing throughout the fall and into mid-January. No matter when someone signs up, convenient training sessions are available. The training period can vary depending on which site a volunteer specifies and which role they would like to play. Greeters/ Intake specialists do not need advance training. Preparers will complete either IRS-approved VITA or AARP trainingwhich is generally around 30 hours or, if working at one of our “Benefit Bank” locations, will complete 6-8 hours of software training. Preparers will conduct intake interviews with taxpayers and then help them prepare and e-file their federal tax returns using approved software. Volunteers do NOT need to have any prior experience with tax preparation or a background in accounting or finance to participate, although basic computer skills, a desire to help low and moderate income families, and the ability to work with people from varied backgrounds are important considerations. Greeters/Intake Specialists are needed at many sites and to handle check-in procedures, which can include signing people in, ensuring they have the necessary documentation and helping them complete intake forms. istoric downtown Plant City is known for hosting historic events of stature. On Saturday, October 16th, car and truck owners of antiques, customs, classics and hotrods brought their showpieces and joined spectators around the train depot for a day of free entertainment.

Benny, event organizer, said it was great to be there. “We’re having our monthly car show. It’s the third Saturday of every month. It’s free to the public and free for the cars. Everybody’s out here to have a good time.” This car show was for vehicles from 1985 and older, but “Next month is a mustang show, and in January we will have a truck

show. We like to change it up” as Benny said. Gary is a very proud owner of a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr. “It’s pretty rare,” he said. rivers of every age need to know: Whether it’s alcohol, prescription drugs, or a cell phone that has you under the influence, it’s as dangerous as holding a loaded gun.

Students at Strawberry Crest High School witnessed a mock car crash October 14, demonstrating the result of drinking and driving. Five students performed along with real life police, paramedics, and firefighters. The Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Department expressed thanks to Brewington’s Towing Service, Stowers Funeral Home, Tampa General Hospital and AeroMed, along with and county EMS and firefighting personnel for assistance in this powerful outdoor drama. All hope teens will seriously consider choices they make when they’re driving or riding with friends. Each year these organizations stage accident re-enactments at four area high schools. This was the first at Strawberry Crest. From the stadium’s home side, students watched the unfolding story begin with two cars covered by a tarp. Caleb Cruz and Phoebe Ellington were in one vehicle and

Savannah Brantley and Abe Fernandez were in the other. Suddenly, a desperately honking car horn and screeching tire noises were followed by the unmistakable sound of crunching metal. The tarps were removed, revealing a disaster. Both front ends looked like smashed metal monsters. Four students inside the vehicles were bruised and bloody. A fifth student, Brittney Williams, drove past and dialed 911 to report the accident. She pleaded for help to come quickly. Almost immediately sirens from ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars pierced the air at Charger field.

Flat boards and neck braces helped rescuers carefully remove the injured students. With each body securely strapped to a stretcher, the scene became even more real. Paramedics worked feverishly to resuscitate two lifeless bodies. Brantley was loaded into the back of the ambulance. Next and adding to the drama, a MediVac helicopter whirled dust and debris into the bleachers as it landed on the football field.

This experience, intended to dramatically impact students’ attitudes about cautious driving and right decisions to avoid alcohol, click the seatbelt, and wait to text, seems to have accomplished its mission. Sophomore Gabriel Morua said, “It made me think about the things I do and showed me anything can happen. We’re not invincible because we’re young.” Another sophomore, Brandon Denney, agreed: “The crash shocked me into deep thought. I wondered what would happen in my family if I died by that cause. The poem gave me goosebumps. When I get into a car, I won’t have a sip of anything alcohol related in my body. I just hope we can end this because no one deserves the hardship of this tragic accident.” Ultimately, students learned that drivers who choose to live carelessly have no one to blame but themselves. Sadly and too often, some who’ve made wise choices pay the ultimate price for another’s serious mistake. Let’s hope this lesson is one that lasts a long lifetime.

ink was the color of choice at the Red Rose on October 16th when the hotel’s Ballroom was invaded by clapping, screaming Zumba Fitness enthusiasts with a cause. The elegant chandeliers glistened above with hope as the Zumbathon, benefiting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, raged in high gear below.

“I have several friends who are cancer survivors, and no one should lose a loved one to breast cancer,” said Susan Staton, certified Zumba Fitness instructor and event coordinator. “I would like to see a cure in my lifetime, and this is my way of supporting that goal.” The event brought together the extended Zumba Fitness families of local instructors, Susan Staton, Claudia Moon, Patty Sanchez and Lynn Heil. The instructors took turns leading the crowd in cumbia, merengue, salsa and reggaeton dances and student, Edwin Cincron, really got things moving with his high-energy performance of “Tu Boquita.”

Plant City resident Donna Jean Crocker summarized her Zumbathon experience. “If you don’t like to exercise, but you like music, you’ll love Zumba,” she said. “Today, we don’t only get to have fun and burn calories with our friends, we are also supporting a great cause.” After hours of nonstop action, the men, women and children who came out to support the cause got a chance to win a variety of prizes donated by Plant City businesses and local supporters. Prizes included a three-night stay at a Vail, Colorado resort, a gift certificate to Souther Chiropractic, earrings from John Schupard at Crescent Jewelers, a training session from Mike “I Hate My Trainer” and a trip to the Bod Pod at Power Shop Fitness from Amanda “Arm Band Girl.” Evelyn Madonia, the owner and general manager of the Red Rose Inn and Suites, graciously donated the facility to hold the Zumbathon as well as several great prizes, including a dinner for two with preferred seating at the Red Rose Dining Room, an overnight stay in a signature Polo Club suite and $225 in gift certificates.

“Zumba Fitness has become part of my exercise plan to help me feel alive,” said breast cancer survivor, Deanna Porter. “Most breast cancer exists in your breast for 10 years before you can feel it during a self-exam.” Porter’s hyperplasia could not be felt, but was found early during

hen the winds of war swept across the country, Plant City residents responded by volunteering by the hundreds. The draft called many more, and the city streetscape changed almost overnight. The years 1941 through 1945 saw the young men and a number of young women called to serve their country in various branches of military service. They served across the continental United States, in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Far East, on the ground, at sea, and in the air. Years later, most, but not all of them, returned.

In 2005, 60 years after the close of World War II, in recognition of their service, the Plant City Photo Archives collected hundreds of photographs of area veterans and established the “Salute to Veterans” photo exhibit. By 2010, the collection has expanded to include veterans from all eras, and not only photos, but many vets contributed stories about their experiences, plus maps, and clippings. On November 11, 2005, the Photo Archives opened its first public showing of the “Salute to Veterans” exhibit and the Open House that day drew hundreds of local and regional citizens to honor their veterans. In the following year, on Saturday, November 11, 2006, over 350 visitors viewed the exhibit, and many of them poured onto the street to cheer and welcome the Plant City National Guard troops as they returned from active duty in Kuwait and Iraq, and their buses were escorted through downtown en route to the Armory. This year, on Saturday, November 6, 2010, the Photo Archives & History Center held its sixth annual Open House to display the “Salute to Veterans” exhibit. Several hundred visitors enjoyed the exhibit, which featured nearly 600 photos of area veterans – in 8x10s, enlargements up to 3’x4’, and 4’x10’ vinyl banners. The guests also enjoyed the piano music of Mrs. Vonell Browning, coffee donated by Starbucks, and pastries donated by Publix

The “Salute to Veterans” Exhibit has been one of the most popular exhibits at the Photo Archives and will remain on display through Saturday, January 8, 2011. In past years, relatives of veterans whose photos are on display have come from across the country to visit family, and to visit the veterans exhibit. Veterans from the Plant City area and those now living in the area are invited to submit their photos to the Photo Archives for its collection and for future exhibit. Unless donated, the photos are not retained; they are scanned and returned. re you ready for some good ol’ Southern style barbecue? Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 20 th. That is the date of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce EIGHTH ANNUAL PIG JAM. Over $15,000 in prizes will be awarded the winners. This is a professional competition with participants coming from all over the country. It is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. In addition to the professionals, amateurs and kids also grill up their favorite barbeque for you to enjoy. This is first rate family fun with live entertainment and vendors. This all takes place at the Randy Larson Four-Plex at Plant City Stadium and gets underway at 10 AM with the BBQ going on till 5 PM.

Chris Sparkman and Jodi Smith are once again in charge of this event along with the help of several Chamber members. You will not want to miss it. Another event occurring on November 20 th. is the BRUTON LIBRARY ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BOOK SALE. This is a great time to buy that book for the special person on your holiday gift list. Each and every member along with Chamber President Marion Smith and staff wish you a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Can you believe Christmas season is almost upon us? With that in mind, it just would not be Christmas in Plant City without the Annual LIGHTS OF LOVE sponsored by South Florida Baptist Hospital. This wonderful family event will take place in McCall Park in downtown Plant City on Thursday, December 2 nd. It gets underway at 6 PM. There will be singing of Christmas songs, pictures with Santa, and of course, the beautiful Christmas tree decorated with hundreds and hundreds of colorful lights of love. Mark your calendars for this event. You will not want to miss it! The Annual PLANT CITY CHRISTMAS PARADE will take place on Friday, December 3 rd. This year, the parade will start at 6 PM which is a halfhour earlier than in year’s past. It will wind though downtown Plant City. On Saturday, December 4 th. the Chamber’s Annual CHRISTMAS BIKE FEST will be held in downtown Plant City. Come on out and look over all the great motorcycles and see all the pretty Christmas decorations and holiday lights. Great family fun. Starts at 5 PM. Last year, your Chamber started what we hoped would become an on-going event. It was a great success, so we will be continuing it again this year. What is it? A CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATING CONTEST with several Chamber of Commerce businesses participating. Here is the way this works……Chamber businesses will decorate a Christmas tree in their place of business. You will have

the opportunity to stop by and check out all the decorated trees and vote for the one you think is best. Now, here is the good part, after you have visited all the business that participate and you have voted for your favorite tree, you will drop off the card that the business will provide you with and bring that to the Chamber office, 106 North Evers Street. There it will be deposited in a box for a drawing that will take place on December 20 th. for a $150. VISA card which can be used anywhere VISA is accepted. And who can’t use a $150. VISA card 5 days before Christmas?

January 15 - Strawberry Classic Car Show, Downtown Plant City

From December 30 th. through January 7 th. hundreds of participants will be coming to Plant City to play in the Easton Foundation International Softball Federation Youth Softball World Cup. This is an extension of existing concepts, the ISF Junior Girls World Cup and the Youth World Cup. It will be open to club teams both domestic and international, specifically targeting the 16 and under age category. The event is based on the concept of utilizing softball for the development of youth, by fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging an appreciation of working together. As of this date, commitments to participate in this event have been received by International teams from Canada, the Philippines, Russia, Bahamas, Puerto Rico,

Joyce Jordan and Linda Fuhrman are a wonderful souls. Several years ago, Joyce had an idea to begin an organization to help those in need. After a lot of work, she established Unity in the Community, a charitable organization that has given thousands of dollars and meals to those in need throughout the community. Today, they’re seeing their seeing the fruits of their labors. Focus: Are you originally from Plant City? Jordan: No. I was born in Georgia, but moved to the Plant City area in 1949. My mom and dad moved here. I guess they thought there was better life here than sharecropping in Georgia. I believe my dad’s brother moved here first. He had a pretty good job at the time, and I’m sure that had something to do with it. Two of my children are here; Joey Herring and Denise Martin. I also have a son who lives in Arkansas, Dwayne Herring, and a daughter in Georgia, Tina Smith. But I also have 12 grandchildren and a nephew and his family that are here. Focus: What was the idea behind founding Unity in the Community? Jordan: I was working at the Shopper Courier at the time, and having a conversation with one of my accounts. We started talking about the idea, but got busy and time went by. Ultimately I came up with the name Unity in the Community. I took the idea and ran with it. It was founded in February 1999. The idea was simply to help those in need. There’s always a reason people need help; illness, losing their jobs, etc. I was raised to help others. My family was sharecroppers. We worked hard for everything we had, and although it wasn’t much, we knew there was always someone else who was worse off than we were. Whatever we had, we were supposed to share.

continued from page 62 Focus: When you were just getting started, how did you raise funds to help those in need?

we were told that if we’d change the dinner to barbeque ribs, we’d do even better. So we made the change, and we did even better. Each time we’ve made more money. Charles Smith cooked the ribs and it was. The yard sale items are all donated. We have it in the parking lot under a tent at the Sweetbay located down town on Wheeler St. When we finish, one of the churches comes to us and we donate everything that’s left over to them. The first weekend in November this year, we held a sporting clay event in Tenoroc. They have the sporting clay setup and we worked with them to host the event. On November 16th and 17th, we’ll be providing 382 turkey dinners to families that were identified in the community that are in need. The dinners have everything needed to make a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving.

Jordan: We started by organizing a music show at the 1914 high school. Myrle Henry was doing his Florida Opry at the time and got me some connections for the entertainers and really mentored me through the process. The day we held the show, we had a yard sale, arts and crafts, kid’s games, a massage therapist and a barbeque dinner. Businesses made donations to the event. We grossed about $15,000. It was wonderful. For this first event, we worked from about four in the morning to about midnight that day. It was a lot of work. I even had family come in from all over to help us. I had family from north Florida, Georgia, Arkansas and Louisiana that showed up to help, and a Focus: Your organization has grown quite a lot of friends helped us, too. We also sent bit over the years. letters to local businesses to solicit their help. Jordan: Yes, we’ve grown so much. We had just a few volunteers the first year. We also have a Directorist, Jeniffer Martin. Jennifer is a high school student that serves on our board. She volunteers for us doing a lot of computer work. As a Directorist on our board, she participates in our meetings, but doesn’t have a vote. Focus: This year, Unity in the Community had a fairly unique fundraiser, and a lot of success. Jordan: Yes. When Steve Hurley first came to town, I met him and Captain Hook at the Chamber Contact Breakfast. I spoke with them about Unity in the Community and gave them some information on what we were doing. They wanted to be a part of it and we brought both of them onto the board. They had an idea to sell raffle tickets for two 52” televisions and give Unity in the Community the proceeds. They raised about $2000. Bubba the Love Sponge, a local DJ, asked Steve, “Why are you giving away televisions when you have a car dealership?” So after Steve finished choking, he said, “I’ll pay for half of it if you’ll pay for the other half.” So they got a new yellow Chevrolet Camaro. Hulk Hogan got involved and it really turned out well for everyone. They sold tickets on-line, through Stingray Chevrolet, at the Florida Strawberry Festival and through each of the board members. It was promoted heavily on the radio. Even more

Jordan: In 2001, doctors discovered I had a brain tumor. I had surgery and had it removed, but as a result, I have some shortterm memory loss. There are some things that I just can’t remember. I just keep going forward. Everything is fine today, but from time to time I’ll have a seizure. Sometimes I try to say things but the words just don’t want to come out. I have to give thanks to God, and my involvement with Unity in the Community. The doctors have told me that my involvement in the organization has helped me tremendously to recover from the tumor. It’s kept me active and helped me heal. I just thank God for everything. Focus: Who are the recipients of all this hard work? Jordan: We gave $7,500 to the Trinity Special Sportsman Ministry to build an archery range for the kids in their ministry. We just gave the Junior Women’s Club $10,000 for jackets for needy children, $20,000 to the United Food Bank of Plant City and $25,000 to Meals on Wheels. God is good! We give primarily to the United Food Bank and Meals on Wheels. They’re our two largest recipients each year. Then, because of the influence of Steve Hurley and Stingray Chevrolet, next year we’ll begin establishing scholarships for local high school students from Plant City, Durant and Strawberry Crest. We’ll be able to start this with the graduating class of 2011. Focus: If someone would like to help out with your organization, how can they get involved? Jordan: They can call me at 813-7521275. A lot of people don’t realize that we’re a 501(c)(3) organization, so everything that is donated to us is tax deductible. There’s no doubt that Jordan has a passion for this work. She enjoys it. It keeps her busy. And although she’s the one helping others in need, it brings joy and a little bit of therapy to her. Thanks so much for all your efforts. A Customer’s PersPeCtive of the Auto-ACCident Allen DoDD’s elite Auto Collision works for the Customer, not the insurer exPerienCe

wo days before Christmas last year I was driving around town delivering Christmas cookies to all my customers. I was sitting at a red light when I glanced into my rear view mirror. I saw an F-150 headed for me and could see that the driver was looking to her left at something and wasn’t slowing down for the light. There was nothing I could do but wait for her to hit me. No one was injured in the accident, and fortunately she was insured and admitted fault. From the side of the road waiting on the police report, I made two phone calls. The first was to my chiropractor because I knew I felt whiplash and needed an exam. The second was to Allen Dodd’s Elite Auto Collision because I had always heard that they were the best auto-collision shop for accidents. Those were the two best decisions I could have made. Before the end of the day, both businesses fit me in last minute on December 23 and held my hand as I began the process with the insurance companies right in the middle of the holidays. The most frustrating part was dealing with the claims adjusters. Her insurance company had to come to my house to quote the damage, then my insurance company made me drive half an hour away to have them estimate the damage, and yet I knew I wanted the work done at Allen Dodd’s, who also had to do their own estimation. Her company came in around $800 and my insurance company came in around $900. However, Allen Dodd said they couldn’t fully assess the damage without taking off the bumper and looking underneath. They found over $3000 in damages.

The other thing that made my experience so smooth with Allen Dodd was that they walked me through the entire process. Krystal or Hector answered the phone every time I called and could inform me on the status of my repairs. Because parts had to be shipped from Germany, and they ran into a couple unforeseen damages during the process, my car ended up being in the shop for three weeks. However, I never had to deal with the insurance company. They handled everything for me and I drove around in my rental until my Beetle was restored. Probably my favorite part of the entire process was that before they return a vehicle to a customer, they do a complete detail job on the entire car. When I drove away in my Beetle, it literally felt and smelled exactly the same as when I drove it off the Volkswagen lot the first time.

Both insurance companies offered for me to use their preferred vendors. The reason I chose Allen Dodd’s is because he always says, “insurance company’s chosen shops always work for the insurer. They are rewarded for saving the insurance company money. We work for you. Our job is to restore your car back to the prime condition it was in before the accident and we don’t cut corners to save costs.” There are so many horror stories about cars they’ve seen come into their shops. They often work on vehicles that were previously repaired by the insurance company’s preferred collision centers. Most of the time they use aftermarket parts to replace damages, even if those parts are rusting or have other issues. Often they will “band-aid” problems rather than actually fixing them, which causes the vehicle owners a wealth of problems down the road. “Almost every single estimate we see for vehicles we work on post-accident are under-quoted. It’s commonplace for us to end up with a final bill thousands of dollars above the original estimation,” said Hector, shop manager.

hanksgiving is a good time to be thankful for those charitable, educational and religious groups that provide your community with valuable services. And now may be a good time to consider supporting these groups because, if you contribute before the year is over, you may “do well by doing good” through valuable tax deductions. To illustrate the benefit of these deductions, let’s assume you’re in the 25% tax bracket. If you give $100 to a qualified charity, you can deduct $100 (with a tax benefit of $25) when you file your taxes. Consequently, the real cost of your donation is just $75 ($100 minus the $25 tax savings).

As you consider your charitable gifts, keep the following points in mind: * You must donate — not just pledge. You can make a pledge to donate, but the amount is not deductible until you actually pay it. * You must contribute to a qualified charitable group. For your gift to be deductible, it must go to a qualified taxexempt organization — either a religious group or a group that has received 501(c) (3) status from the IRS. If you’re unsure if the group you want to support is taxexempt, just ask. * You must itemize. To claim a charitable deduction, you must itemize deductions on your taxes. Thus far, we’ve talked only about cash gifts. But you may have other financial assets, such as stocks, that you can give to

charitable groups, and these gifts also can earn you tax benefits. For example, suppose you give $500 worth of stock in XYZ Company to a charitable group. If you’re in the 25% tax bracket, you can deduct $125 when you file your taxes for 2010. But by donating the XYZ stock, you avoid paying any capital gains taxes you might have incurred if you had sold the stock yourself. Making charitable gifts now may help you reduce the size of your estate and potentially lower any future estate tax burden on your heirs. Right now, federal estate tax laws are in flux, but it’s possible that, one day, your estate might be large enough to generate estate taxes. If you wanted to formalize your charitable gifts and help your estate planning, you might consider establishing a charitable remainder trust. Under such an arrangement, you’d place some assets, such as stocks or real estate, in a trust, which could then use these assets to pay you a lifetime income stream. When you establish the trust, you may be able to receive a tax deduction based on the charitable group’s “remainder interest” — the amount the charity is likely to ultimately receive. (This figure is determined by an IRS formula.) Upon your death, the trust would relinquish the remaining assets to the charitable organization you’ve named. Keep in mind, though, that this type of trust can be complex. To establish one, you’ll need to work with your tax and legal advisors. In any case, be generous during this season of giving. You’ll be helping a charitable group accomplish its worthy goals — and you may be helping yourself when tax time arrives.

he Walden Lake Community Association Board Meetings are the third Monday of each month. id you know that the available balance on your revolving lines of credit can impact your credit score?

A factor in credit scoring called “Debt to available debt”, or “Proportion of balances to credit limit” can have a big impact on your score. Besides timely payments, another way to boost your credit score is to pay your credit card balances to approximately 20% of the available balance, or request that your limit be increased so that your balance is now 20% or less than the available limit. It does not have to be 20%, but generally, the close you are to 20% the more positive your score will be. This is where is gets nasty with credit card companies and home equity loans. Let’s say you have a credit card with a balance

of $4,000 and the limit is $12,000. Your debt to available debt is 4000/12000 = 33.3%. Not too bad. Now, imagine that your credit card company, like many, either freezes your card or simply reduces the available limit on your card to a maximum of $5,000. You are making the same payments, have the same balance, and are not late. Guess what happens to your credit score as a result of this line decrease? You guessed it. This would have a negative impact on your score because you debt to available debt is not worse off since you are utilizing (4000/5000) 80% of your available debt versus the original scenario of 33.3%. While you can’t change the system, it always pays to be aware of the implications of yours or others actions with your credit score.

y now everyone knows that we are NOT in an Appreciating Market for Real Estate. That fact is true for most, if not all of the country. We have been in a Depreciating Market for about 3 years. Locally, on average, 1 in 10 homes makes it to the closing table in today’s market. In a recent meeting, I reported that in the Plant City market it is just under 1 in 10 homes (.8). Warren Buffet calls it an “Economic Pearl Harbor”. That does not make one feel warm and happy. Forbes Magazine reported last December that the Housing outlook for 2010 was a price decline of nearly 23% for the Tampa Market. So far in 2010 the data shows the decline in home prices right at 22%. A ray of hope for 2011, there is actually a projected price increase of 1.26%. The economic forecast team of CaseShiller created an index of American

housing prices going back to 1890. The history and factual data shows that the average rate of Appreciation is between 1-3% per year. If you are a Seller – and you are “waiting” for the buyers to catch up to your asking price, you might need a hefty load of patience. Today, you either Sell or Stay. Of course, if you are in a Short Sale situation your home should already be priced at or below market value. What will get your home to the closing table? Something to think about, but don’t take too long. Case-Shiller also reported cumulative price declines since December 2007 for major U.S. cities. The data for the Tampa Area shows a cumulative decline in prices of 43% since 2007. That is negative fortythree percent! There is a risk to overpricing…and there is a cost of waiting. Thanks for allowing me to interview you. Tell me something about yourself. Well, I’ve been married to my wife Tammy for 26 years. I have two boys. Jordan is 22 and Shane is 25. I also have a five-year-old granddaughter named Hope. I grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and played basketball and football at Somerset High School. I started out coaching high school boys’ basketball about 17 years ago. For a period of time, I worked at Berea College. Then I became the head boys coach at Western High School in Louisville. Several years ago, I moved to Plant City and I ended up coaching girls’ basketball at McKeel High School in Lakeland. McKeel had only won four games in the previous five years. My first year there, we won seven games. The next year we won 17, the third year we won 19, the fourth year we won 21, and last year we won 22. How did you become the head girls coach at Plant City? Well, we wanted to be closer to home. So, I took a job a Shiloh Middle School. I was a finalist for the head-coaching job at Southeastern University, but later accepted the job at Webber International University

(Babson Park). I worked there a couple of months this summer, but when the job at Shiloh came open, I resigned at Webber and took the Shiloh job and then accepted the coaching position at Plant City High School.

How does this season look? We look good. We’re not a young team as far as age, but we are a young team as far as skill level and experience.

Our point guard Kiana Robello is very smooth with the basketball. She has everything under control. The other players will draw from her and what she does. We have another player, Morgan Stevens. The kids have sort of elected her as captain. She’s a real leader. Yikera Kurns is a sophomore who played last year. She is developing as a leader. Our kids pray before practice and we’re trying to build character through these leaders. I think that Morgan and Yikera have really started to hold the other kids accountable. Thanks coach and good luck this season.

How has the transition been at Plant City? The first thing I did was make the kids understand how disciplined I wanted the program to be. I think we have a great group of kids. We have kids who really want to work hard. I want them to understand that it takes discipline to turn a program around. Do you have a coaching philosophy? Well, my philosophy in coaching is this; discipline first. Then get good kids in the program. Once you get good kids in the program and the kids work hard, you can build anything. Do you have a philosophy in life? God first. Once you put God first, everything else falls into place.

ccording to her head coach, Mark Boswell, everything Kiana Robello does is smooth, “Kiana is very smooth with the basketball. She’s has everything under control. She’s sort of like a duck on the water. She might be churning underneath but she is smooth on the surface. The other players on the team will draw from her and what she does.” That is not a bad assessment for a player who had a limited amount of playing time as a freshman and sophomore and took her junior year off to concentrate on her academics. But that is what her coach and others see when they observe the Plant City Raiders senior point guard operate during preseason practices in preparation for the Raiders first game November 16 against Plant High School.

Kiana, Focus’ Athlete of the Month, was born in Jacksonville and moved to Plant City as a child. She is the only child of Jennifer and Kaypo Robello. Kaypo lives in Pensacola and travels to see her games as much as he can and Kiana lives with her mother here in Plant City. “My mom’s a real sweetheart, said Kiana, “I love being the only child. I guess I’m spoiled. Yeah, pretty much that’s the way it is, but I’m loving it.” Kiana is a bubbly 5’3” 118-pound dynamo that began playing basketball at Tomlin Middle School in the sixth grade. Before the Tomlin tryouts, she had never played basketball before. She took up the sport quickly and played on two AAU teams, the Lakeland Chargers and the Plant City Panthers, coached by former college standout Latosha Lewis. There is more to Kiana, however, than basketball. She is member of the National Honor Society and is very active in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). She

also loves English. In fact, this year she is taking three English classes at the same time. “I just love English. I’m probably the only kid in America who is taking three English classes. I love English because I love to write. One day I would love to be a novelist.” Kiana has applied at a number of colleges and has already been accepted at University of Central Florida and the University of West Florida. She is awaiting the word from several other colleges. Before this season, Kiana really had not looked into playing basketball in college but wouldn’t turn down the opportunity if it were offered. “In the past, my mind was on academics and playing basketball was just something to do,” said Kiana, “but now, I am really excited and if the situation is right and I am asked to play in college, then why not! Coach Boswell has shown interest in me. I’m not the tallest and I’m not the fastest but he tells me that I am a good ball handler and that I have a chance to play at the next level. In fact, this season is going to be great. I can hardly wait for it to get started.” Kiana loves Plant City and says that she will probably come back here one day to live and raise a family, but she is eager to graduate so she can explore the world outside the city limits of her hometown. She is ready to see the world.

National Champions USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) is the second largest youth sports association in the world with more than 42,000 teams and more than 3.5 million members. Since 1997, the USSSA has conducted two national tournaments, one in the spring and another in the fall.

This year’s USSSA Fall National Championships were held October 1-3 at the Chain O’ Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida, the former Spring Training home of the Cleveland Indians. For the Florida Baseball Heaven Angels Gold 18U team, the championship win was a sweet reward for stumbling through an opening round pool game on their way to five victories and the USSSA Fall National Championship earning team players

The Angels are made up of players 18 years and younger from central Florida. Plant City players include Matt Singletary, Cody Smith, and Evan Bowles. Head Coach Sheldon Fulse, a former standout at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland, a third round draft pick, and a veteran of six years with the Seattle Mariners and the Boston Red Sox, felt that the team began to come together as they moved through pool play. “It was encouraging to see them work together and accept their roles. When they did, good things began to happen,” said Fulse.

Indeed they did, but only after a rocky start in the first round of pool play. On Friday evening, Angels’ pitcher Kyle Jensen pitched well and kept things close for five innings, but when he was relieved in the 6th inning, the All American Prospects scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. In their final at bat, the Angels were able to string together a hit, a walk, and an error to load the bases. Juan Rivera delivered a bases clearing triple to tie the game and later scored as the Angels celebrated a 6-5 come from behind victory. In the championship round, the Angels earned a first round bye but ended up facing Game Ready Baseball once again in the semifinals. This time they played errorless baseball and humbled their opponents 8-0. Zack Rowe and Jose Hernandez combined for the shutout while Matt Singletary supplied the offense with two doubles. The Angels advanced to the championship game against the Flagler Bulldogs late Sunday evening. Jake Reigner pitched a gem shutting out the Flagler 4-0 scattering five hits, striking out six, and hitting a triple to help lead the Angels to their first national title. “It was a combination of good pitching and timely hitting,” said Fulse. “Juan Rivera provided the leadership. He’s the kind of player that you need on your team. It’s really satisfying when you see the team come together like they did in just a few days.” Team members include: Cody Smith, JaMaurice Burgess, Lionar Morales, Jake Reigner, Matt Singletary, McCauley Falu, Zack Rowe, Kyle Jensen, Evan Bowles, Juan Rivera, Lorenzo Fernandez, and Jose Hernandez.

I’ve been following a high-protein diet, but I recently read something about this adversely affecting my kidneys? I plan to ask my doctor about this, but do you know of any correlation?

» Answer:

Good question, and one that used to come up pretty frequently when high-protein diets were all the rage. There are essentially two different scenarios that we need to address here. The first one involves those with a pre-existing kidney condition. In this instance, following a high-protein diet, and specifically the induction phases of some of the most popular programs, can lead to a steeper decline in function. For these individuals, high-protein diets are not recommended. The second scenario involves people with normal kidney function. There isn’t any research indicating that high-protein diets negatively impact these folks, but there’s an important caveat here that we can’t ignore. How do you know if you have normal kidney function? Do you really know if your kidneys are working as well as they should be? Many with renal insufficiency (an early condition of declining function) are asymptomatic, and completely unaware of

the potential for problems down the road. And, unfortunately, most folks don’t see a doctor before starting a high-protein diet. Therefore, if you’ve committed to losing weight with this type of regimen, it might be a good idea to get your labs checked.

» Question:

I know stretching is incredibly important, but someone told me not to stretch before working out. This doesn’t sound right to me at all. Can you clarify?

» Answer:

Whoever told you this is pretty smart. We all grew up with the notion that stretching prior to exercise would loosen up our muscles and help prevent injuries; however, recent research has proven otherwise. It is now generally accepted that doing static stretches prior to a workout will likely make you slower and weaker during your exercise sessions, and might actually increase your risk for injury. Your best bet would be to do some active, sport-specific movements beforehand to adequately prepare your muscles for work. Then, you can focus on stretching after your workout, when your muscles are warm and much more elastic.

She is vice president of Student Council, historian of Future Business Leaders of America at Plant City High School and of District 9, a member of the Buccaneers Student Advisory Board, President of Inter Club Council, and Vice President of NHS and this is just to name a few. It’s amazing she can find time for herself or even to have a job. Victoria says the key to her time management is “I have to organize my time and write out schedules so I can get things done efficiently. I just try not to over plan.” Being a member of Student Council since her freshmen year, Victoria has certainly put in plenty of time to the organization. Last year as Jr. Vice President along with another student council office Victoria planned and executed PCHS’s homecoming, “A Night in Disguise”. This job takes time, organization and lots of planning, all things Victoria has a talent for keeping. Though these things haven’t come easily, student council has been a catalyst in her development of these

Born and raised in Plant City, Victoria always finds time for her community. Involved in the Buccaneers Student Advisory board, she spends a lot of time helping out others. With the SAB she has volunteered at The Children’s Home in Tampa, assisted at Bucs “ZOO BOO!” at Lowry Park Zoo and gathered products at school and home to donate and help out the troops serving our country. With the Inter Club Council at PCHS, she has been busy organizing and encouraging clubs to participate in the supply drive for Veterans which is held by the schools deputy and the community. Also Victoria is now planning a school beautification project with NHS which should take place this coming month. With all of these activities Victoria spends her off time working at the Plant City Beef O’ Brady’s as a waitress and is also a member of the tennis team. She has been on the team since 9th grade and loves the competition and focus that comes with playing tennis. Last year Victoria was named Ms. January in the Calendar Girl competition at PCHS and this year was voted onto Homecoming court at school. In the future, Victoria hopes to attend either Santa Fe or Hillsborough Community College and continue on to a major university, pursuing a degree in culinary or photography. Her dream is to own her own diner and be a photographer because these careers give her “The freedom to be creative. With these careers I can be spontaneous and fun; you make your own rules and regulations and what you make can be something greater than you ever imagine.”

Kayvious is involved in many extracurricular activities around PCHS. He is a member of student council, secretary of executive council, Jr. Civitan, National Honors Society and many more. These activities challenge him to become a better leader and keep him busy year round. To add to an already exciting senior year, Kayvious was voted as a member of Homecoming Court at PCHS, an experience he says “Made me realize how far I’ve come! Freshmen year I was a shy kid with low self-esteem and now as a senior I am confident and outgoing.” This confidence also brings a positive presence to this senior; you will never catch Kayvious in the halls without a big smile across his face! He is very active in volunteer work and just this past month Kayvious has been volunteering at the local food bank, participating in school beautification projects with Interact Service Club

Beginning his freshmen year, Kayvious joined the Plant City High School football team and instantly felt at home. “Football has been more than just a sport for me; it has been like another family and I have really bonded with my team. We’re like brothers!” This brotherhood has carried him all through high school and turned him into a stronger person. Though unable to play most this season due to a serious kidney injury, he has maintained bonds with the team and helps mentor the younger players during study hall. “Even though I can’t play sports anymore because of my injury, I really have learned that you can’t ever take life for granted because it is something that can be taken so quickly.” With this new found take on life Kayvious is ready for the challenges that may lie ahead. Next year, Kayvious hopes to attend either University of Florida or University of South Florida and possibly major in psychology. He has attended programs at both of these schools; the UF High School Outstanding Scholar Program and USF’s Scholar Showcase, both programs for students who have worked hard through their high school careers. Whatever he may do in his future, it is easy to say he will be successful if he keeps up with what he is doing.

No, nobody is going to shot them, or at least you pray their lives are not in danger. But getting out there and opening up your soul and your passion to public scrutiny carries the risk you may be hurt emotionally or even financially. Yep! It takes money to run campaigns and plenty of dog catchers and mosquito control and fire districts candidates dug deep into their own pockets to fund their campaigns. We are not all Rick Scotts or Jeff Greens. What you didn’t see was all the meetings and the debates and rallies were only a handful of people showed up. You didn’t hear them talking late into the night with their own campaign folks, neighbors likes you and me, folks in churches and synagogues, shaking hands at grocery stores, passing out their own fliers, licking the envelopes, and doing those stupid TV interviews that last all of 30 seconds with barely 15 of that making air.

The election is over I t’s 3:30 AM. The 2010 midterm election is winding down. My brain is on overload with results, more questions to ask our TV analysts, more screens to read, more interpretation about what this all means. Simple! We have survived another election cycle. The process that separates us from the rest of the world has succeeded again. Of course, not all our favorites won. California dumb founds us by electing Jerry Brown for a third term as Governor. Wasn’t he basically a hippy left-winger when he was first elected? I heard him on Fox a couple of weeks ago and he almost sounded like a fiscal conservative. Then they turned down legalizing marijuana and voted to prevent governments from raising any taxes without voter approval.

Being forced to explain why you believe something is the best way to measure the value of your thoughts. And for the folks who hold their noses or refuse to vote because they say they don’t like the choices I have some words of advice. If you don’t like it, run yourself. Your ideas do us non good if you aren’t willing to take part in the process. There are enough people standing on the sidelines thumbing their noses to fill a hundred Tampa Stadiums. Well, go ahead and fill the stadium where you can’t hurt anyone except yourself. Scream into the darkness and see if the darkness answers back. For the rest of you who did vote---God Bless you. Experiencing God, then, is a crucial element of that it means to live in the natural world. God is not otherworldly, God is “metaworldly”....

here is a lot that I love about the community of faith where I worship. One of the most outstanding characteristics is the caring, permissiongiving atmosphere, where intellectual honestly is valued and discussion is never closed off by the fear that our faith may not be robust enough or big enough to handle tough questions.

Consequently conversation in small groups, Bible-studies, and Sundayschool classes often leaves me mulling important ideas over - in my mind and heart - for days. Recently, for example, we discussed chapter ten from my book, “The Unmaking of a Part-Time Christian”. The chapter in question was, “A Collision of Worlds.”

What I mean is that we do the work of creation a disservice when we relegate God to the status of outsider. And we do disservice to the intention of God’s creative work when we conduct our lives in a manner that excludes the divine. A life lived in communion with God is – therefore - the most natural thing in the world; especially when we consider that we are created both in the image of God and for relationship with God.

We talked at length about experiences that have served to blur the distinct lines we like to draw between concepts such as time and eternity, natural and supernatural, spiritual and mundane, heaven and earth, the natural and the miraculous...

That is not even close to being a satisfactory way of thinking, because the fundamental assumption is exclusionary to the point of being preemptive.

It was this last couplet that commanded most of our attention. Traditionally, religion has ascribed the moniker “miracle” to anything not readily explainable in human terms. It’s a definition that is necessarily fluid; things drop off the miracle list the moment they can be categorized scientifically. The problem with this way of thinking is the understandable - logical conclusion that all we have to do is look long enough and hard enough and we can explain away God with regard to absolutely everything.

Instead, we talked about the miraculous way in which God works in and through God’s people to make possible things that have been always been intended for this amazing and wonderful world, from the dawn of creation. Rather than supernatural, then, what we call miracles are more accurately metanatural.

By “metanatural” – and I believe I have invented a new word - I mean more comprehensive; beyond what we can easily see as natural; transcending natural; at a higher state of development....

“What we’re talking about here is a kind of dissonance. It’s the conflict between realities. We live in this temporal world, yet we are eternal in our nature. We inhabit bodies that are fragile and seriously flawed, yet we are also children of the Great King, and we are invited to live kingdom lives of victory and great purpose… In the book of Ecclesiastes, The Teacher put it this way: ‘God has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end’ (Ecclesiastes 3: 11). Eternity in a sense is the here and now; at least that’s where time without end begins. The pilgrim must learn to tell time in both realities. God’s time is at once both beautiful and challenging. Wayne doesn’t let the potential of owning two restaurants side-by-side go to waste. Double doors connect the two diners from the inside, so hopping between them is encouraged. “The advantage is the pizza next door - if half the family wants pizza they can go next door.” If you want to get pizza, you can sit in the Mexican portion of the restaurant, or vice versa. You can and you will be tended to just the same.

Mexican Buffet W ayne, owner of Nick’s Pizzeria and Wings in Plant City has opened something unique next door. Decorated with Mexican art and tapestry, and tables full of real Mexican food, the atmosphere will tell you that you’re not in Taco Bell anymore.

Wayne has some interesting reasons for situating the Mexican Buffet right next door to Nick’s Pizzeria. “Buffets are always a great deal - why not a Mexican buffet?” he asked. “There are none in Plant City. So many people come in and say, ‘What a great idea- just what we needed.’ There are Chinese and American, but no Mexican buffets.” The restaurant was promoted to and by customers lined out the front door on its opening day more than two months ago. Wayne explains the business strategy he has used to bring in new diners. “We talk to our customers for their feedback. We try to get better every day. speaks for itself. “We have Americans come in and some are pleasantly surprised because most don’t know what real Mexican food is. They say, ‘This isn’t Taco Bell,’” Wayne said. There is a lot to learn when even the staff is there to add to the authenticity. “I asked my cooks, ‘Why don’t we have hard tacos?’ and they laughed and said, ‘because those aren’t Mexican.’” You learn something new every day. FOCUS grabbed a few plates and loaded up on the hot food from the buffet. The great majority of the food is meat based - beef, pork, and chicken cooked a variety of different ways with real Mexican seasonings. I tried a beef recipe cooked with eggs and green salsa that was hearty and spicy. The flavorful and juicy pork dish was a treat. Another item, beef chunks in red salsa, was tender and stringy with broth running all over the place. The authentic spices are a new experience for someone who’s never had real Mexican food. In addition, the buffet includes unlimited hot wings brought in from the Pizzeria

next door, rice and beans, Mexican spaghetti, and a lot more. For a $6.50 lunch price, diners will experience many things they’ve never tried. The food made me think that perhaps a Mexican

oul Music Night at the Red Rose Inn and Suites featured the Legendary Delfonics and Arthur “Sugar Bear” Aiken on Saturday, October 23rd. The Legendary Delfonics were welcome by a sold out crowd. Hundreds of fans of all ages packed the Red Rose Inn and Suites Convention Center to enjoy the legendary soul musical trio. Whether just singing along or dancing on the packed dance floor everyone there remember their favorite tunes as only performed by the Legendary Delfonics. Dinner tables sparkled and were decorated in classy soul train style of black and gold. Guests enjoyed a five-star meal prepared by Executive Chef Matteo Casini and culinary team. Wine pairings and sinfully delicious desserts rounded out the dining experience. From Philadelphia, the Delfonics are a pioneering soul singing group. The original group included Ritchie, brothers William and Wilbert Hart and high school friend Randy Cain. The group was then called the Four Gents and later the Orphonics. The group’s musical roots go

When the group met songwriter and producer Thom Bell they changed their name to the Delfonics and their musical career sored with hit songs include “La-La (Means I love You)”, “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time)”, “Break Your Promise”, “I’m Sorry”, and “Ready or Not Here I Come (Can’t Hide From Love)”. The Delfonics greatest popularity was during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Soon after the Delfonics was formed, band member Ritchie Daniels was drafted into the military. Then becoming the Delfonics trio, the group went onto 16 pop and 20 R & B hit songs. In 1968, the Delfonics released their first album titled “La La Means I Love You” and in 1969 another album (“Sound of Sexy Soul”) was released. In 1971, Randy Cain left the group and was replaced by singer Major Harris (www. soulwalking.co). entertainment » artist of the month teach art at Centerplace in Brandon to children, Mrs. Fairbanks was motivated to start her own classes which she has been doing now for eight years. Her classes fill up without any advertising except for a sign outside her house and word of mouth. She teaches on Thursday to both children and adults throughout the day for a small fee which includes all art supplies. After seeing examples of her students artwork it was not surprising to learn that at one time she entered 18 paintings from her children’s art classes in the Strawberry Art Festival, many of which took ribbons, with one placing as Best of Show.

Living A Life W hen one enters the art room and studio of local artist Betty Fairbanks, based on the quality and the amount of artwork on display, you would have to believe she has spent a life completely immersed in art. In reality, it was only after raising her four children and retiring from her job as Branch Manager at a local bank that she was able to fully devote herself to her art. Even after retirement, Mrs. Fairbanks returned to work at Moffitt Cancer Center as a caterer. In spite of an extremely busy and fulfilling life, she has kept up with her art and now manages to not only create art but to teach art to others. In Mrs. Fairbanks wonderful art room, surrounded by many examples of her artwork you can’t help but be instantly inspired to paint. After being asked to

In her personal art, Mrs. Fairbanks specializes in painting with watercolor as well as in oils and acrylics. Much of her art is inspired by the floral and fauna of Florida nature and wildlife She has received some formal training from USF as well as from various workshops. Throughout her art career, Mrs. Fairbanks has participated in many art shows such as at the USF Botanical Gardens, the Ceder Key Art Festival and the Manatee Art Festival. She is also a member of the Florida Watercolor Society and the Brandon League of Fine Arts. Besides teaching art, Mrs. Fairbanks enjoys painting every Friday at Centerplace in Brandon with fellow artists where she enjoys the bond and friendships. In the words of Mrs. Fairbanks, “I couldn’t breathe if I couldn’t do art. It is what fulfills me and keeps me young.”
