Letter From The Publisher One of the best parts of going to the festival with new friends is hearing everyone else’s traditions. Even though the Florida Strawberry Festival is always working to bring in new attractions each year, there are certain traditions that remain and will always be Plant City favorites, whether it’s certain rides, attractions, exhibits or foods. For example, last year Lauren Der introduced me to Friske Fries and I’ve been hooked ever since. With just the right amount of seasoning and vinegar, they are a new “can’t miss” item for me when the festival roles into town.

See why everyone is driving to Bartow to buy a car from TOM EDWARDS.

Thousands upon thousands of people make their way each year through the St Clement’s Make Your Own Strawberry Shortcake booth. The buffet-style shortcake line allows you to personalize your shortcake to your taste. Of course, it begins with the biscuit verses angel food cake debate. Then you decide how many scoops of syrup soaked strawberries you want, followed by the whip verses no whip decision and topped with a delicious berry. As simple as the options are, I’ve seen it made so many different ways. I’ve seen people skip the biscuit or cake all together and fill their bowl with berries and whipped cream. There are plenty who choose no, or very little whip cream, and then there’s no telling how many berries someone can fit into their bowl. I’ve even seen someone take a piece of cake and fill the entire bowl beyond capacity with whipped cream, completely leaving out the berries themselves. Regardless of how each person makes their shortcake, in the end they always find it delicious because it was exactly how they wanted it.

Each year, we open up the Reader’s Choice Awards for the entire Plant City community to vote for their favorite restaurants in 21 different categories. Last year we created a new category called Best Server where we allowed the readers to nominate their favorite servers. Karen from Olde Town Pizzeria was our first winner. If you’ve ever eaten lunch at Olde Town then you know this award was very deserved for her. She is certainly the epitome of a small-town waitress at the top of her game. This year, we had such a wide variety of servers nominated that we narrowed it down to the top 5 who received the most votes. Not only were they featured on our cover, but you can meet them and learn a little about each of them in our spotlight this month. After receiving a total over 5,000 votes online in that category, the server with the most votes was Jessica Audrey from Cowboy’s Steakhouse and Saloon. Our feature this month announces the winners of the 20 other categories from Best Fried Chicken to Best Overall Service. Make sure you go out and support the top restaurants in our community who work hard to bring you the best quality food and service available. Just like the experience of walking through the make-your-own strawberry shortcake booth, you have the ability as a member of the Plant City community to contribute your vote each year for the RCA’s. Throughout the year your vote is heard in which local businesses you choose to support. We’re proud to have the honor of recognizing those who make a special effort to bring you personalized attention and delicious flavors. Mike Floyd - Publisher mike@floydpublications.com

TRIBUTE TO TRENDA GUDE

At age 37 one year ago on March 4, 2010, Trenda Gude left this earth to be with her God in heaven. Her life is a legacy of faith practiced in the simplest ways - as a wonderful wife, mother, friend, neighbor and a help to strangers. Joe Gude, loving husband and father to their daughters Faith, 13, and Ashlyn, 11, is following through on a promise he made to Trenda: “We’re making it and I’m taking care of our girls.” He credits her strength in time of trouble and her unwavering faith as inspiration: ”A year ago today she was taken from us all. A year ago today the most beautiful, amazing, loving, caring person we know became an angel. Trenda, you are remembered forever.” Trenda grew up in the Sydney area, graduated from PCHS in 1991 and earned a business degree from USF. She worked at Keller Williams Realty, attended Seffner Freewill Baptist Church and loved to watch the sunset. Facebook posts allowed her to keep in touch with friends and family and to share encouraging words. Following are two samples: February 26 - “Trust in Him at all times, O people. Poor your hearts out to Him for God is our refuge.” March 3, 2011 at 8:59 p.m. - “Here comes Jesus right on time. He has never failed me.” Her good friend Julie Hasting learned a valuable lesson from Trenda: “She always reminded me how precious life is and how to forgive! I have to remember that!” Tifaney Cothren remembers Trenda as “the most amazing, inspiring, and loving person I will ever know. The word BEST describes her perfectly, because she was the BEST

mother, BEST wife to Joe, BEST daughter, and BEST friend any of us could ever have. She understood life and knew what and who were important in it. She was faithful in that ‘til the end - always helping and reaching out to others, even at times when she probably didn’t even know it. Whether it was organizing donations for a family in need at church, speaking His words in our Bible study, or just lending an ear to listen, she did it with perfection.” Buffy Astin remembers her “sidekick” Trenda as “the funniest person I have ever met,” adding, “She loved to laugh. Everything revolved around her girls. I am so thankful for the amazing friendship we shared.” Joyne Mathis recalls that “Trenda was always full of life, always had encouraging words, and would do anything in the world for you. I miss her laughter and our good times together, but this thought comforts me: “I know I will laugh again with her one day.” A city cried the day she died, such was her quiet impact on friends, family, and even those who knew her only from a distance. May her life lived well be an example and answer to the age old question, “How then shall we live?” A solid answer would be live like Trenda

Trenda Jones Gude 1973-2010 The seeds she planted in life have had far-reaching impact in Plant City and in the greater community.

Adventure Two BOING! Jump Center

T

his month the staff at FOCUS Mag azine departed on another adventure as part of the 11 Adventures of 2011. Last month we tore up the race track at Ambassador Racing School in Wimauma. This time we planned our adrenaline trip to a hugely popu lar BOING Jump Center in the Brandon/Tampa area. If you missed our report in the Nove mber 2010 issue of Brandon FOCUS, here’s the deal: BOING! is a vast high-flying indoor jump center made of 11,000 square feet of trampolines covering huge arenas from floor-to-w all. We strapped on some specially desig ned jumping shoes, lined up for a few rules, and then we began a tour. We first approached a huge arena designed for free-style jump ing and acrobatics. The bounce mats are gridded off into sections with padded borders to keep the trampoline taut to provide the highest jumping possi ble. The walls are pitched to assist with acrobatic tricks. In the center stands a column made of yet more trampolines.

After we got the okay from the refer ee we all clamored onto the bounce mats like puppies and fanned out across the arena. Julie, Holl y, and Angel jumped in and took a few minutes to get acclimated to the sensation of being airborne. The guys, Mike Floyd, Anth ony, Tony, and Jason seemed bound to impress upon one another who would be the first expe rt jumper. It was just a few minutes in and we were all panting! Our second wind came , though, and, feeling reenergized, we began to take on more daring tricks; Mike challenge d Anthony to see if he could jump across each long sectio n of trampoline landing but once, as he could do. The kids ran around with their protective helm ets on and had a blast right alongside the adults. Sweaty after ten minutes, we all walk ed out of the freestyle area and up the steps into the dodge ball arenas. Colored balls lay on the center line, ready for us to grab them and await the referee to signal the start of the game. As we would soon discover, players enjoy a super intense match, leaping high over line drives while beam ing a ball down on your opponent from 10 feet in the air, and getting speed on your throw s from inertia that couldn’t other wise be mustered if not flying toward your opponent in midair. It’s more like dodge ball played in a spaceship than compared to playing it in your grand mother’s driveway.

Several employees brought their kids along, too. “Just as many high school and college-aged people come here as kids do, and mayb e even north of that,” said Michael Cana les, owner, in our original inter view in September. “We definitely have activities for all ages as long as you can get on a trampoline.” We found that playing dodge ball again st kids turned out to be a challenge. One could clobber a child in baseball easily, but one could not so easily clobber a child in BOING! dodge ball, where, compared to you, children are smaller and sometimes more dexterous. Tryin g to hit them was like trying to shoot a cricket with a bb gun. But, we adults, too, had advantage s over the kids. All in all, we found this to be a wonderful and unique medium in which to play on equal footing with our kids. In that regard, compared to other physical activities, this migh t be one of the best of its kind. We walked down the steps and craw led, one at a time, through a trap door into the “Aero ball” arenas, a game where two-teams-oftwo get on individual trampolines and try to score points by leaping high and shooting a ball into the goal above the opponent ’s head. Four played at a time, giving the rest of us a chance to pat down our foreheads and rest in front of a huge blowing fan positioned on the sideline. We had a blast, being physically wipe d out after about an hour. We all felt that the great cardio and muscular exercise, besides the insan e fun, was arguably the best feeling from going to BOING! After our hour was up we realized we had received one of the best and most unique workouts of our lives. Jumping and learn ing new stunts was almost as intense as trying to beat children at BOING! dodge ball. See you next month for another editi on of FOCUS Magazine’s 11 Adventure s in 2011. In the meantime, bounce over to BOI NG! and see what we’re talking abou t! Visit www. boingjumpcenter.com for more info.

What’s New at the The Youth Stemming Festival? Contest E Written and photos By: Kristen Hitchcock

very year the Florida Strawberry Festival team tries to come up with new entertainment that will draw the crowds in and keep them coming back for more. This year the team at the Stingray Chevrolet Entertainment Tent led by Angel Carter decided to try a youth stemming contest. “It’s better than bobbing for strawberries,” Angel laughed. SunnyRidge Farm sponsors the Adult Strawberry Stemming Contest each year, and there is always a large turn out, so they asked to sponsor the youth contest as well.

The Youth Strawberry Stemming Contest is open to all children at the festival from kindergarten through 6th grade. With the parents consent, the youth put their names in a basket according to their age group: kindergarten, 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, and 5th and 6th grades. Once the sign-ups are completed five names are drawn from each basket and the children get ready to stem. Plastic knives might be allowed in the adult division, but not with these children. It was fingers only, please. There is a little free time between signing up and stemming. During the waiting period Chris Hogue, emcee, entertains everyone with music, dancing, and a little comedy. After 30 minutes these students are anxious to stem.

Once the stemmer has finished his or her quart of strawberries, they throw their arm in the air to be judged. The judges this year were SunnyRidge Farm employees: Heather Forshee, Jill Dunlap, Jocelyn Silfa, and Lori Drew. These judges look through the baskets to make sure all the green stems are gone. The first person with stem free berries wins. The first place winner in each division receives a large trophy. All contestants receive goodie bags filled with a strawberry beanie baby, t-shirt, tin of strawberry seeds to grow themselves, and of course, more strawberries. They were also able to take home the strawberries they stemmed. The winners for the 2011 Youth Strawberry Stemming contest are as follows: Kindergarten: Gavyn Dean of Advantage Academy 1st and 2nd Grade: Spencer Burke of Elfers Christian 3rd and 4th Grade: Jamauri Sallic of Greater Saint Paul 5th and 6th Grade: Makyla Moore of Indian Trails

The Youth Strawberry Stemming Contest All the kids dug right in, literally, but was a hit; entertaining for not only the SunnyRidge Farms came prepared with contestants, but also the crowd. PCHS Senior Regan Knotts with her parents to accept the $500 scholorship HCA awards.

Hillsborough Counseling Association Awards Area Public School Counselors Written By: Cheryl Johnston

S

chool counselors advocate for the voice in every child. It’s not always easy work.

Each year the Hillsborough Counselors Association hosts an annual Awards Banquet for administrators and counselors of Hillsborough County Schools in order to show appreciation and recognize those nominated for going above and beyond. HCA exists to provide opportunities for education, networking, professional support, public awareness and advocacy for the counselors who work tirelessly to ensure every child in Hillsborough public schools receives the help they need for success. Along with school district officials and board members, approximately 200 attended the February 7th dinner ceremony at The A La Carte Event Pavilion in Tampa. Barbara Coleman, a prosecutor for the State Attorney’s office, gave the keynote address. Special music by percussionists and jazz band members from Plant City High School, under the direction of Ian Peacock, entertained guests. HCA President Tracey Gillett and

President-Elect Lisa Carlsen moderated. Carlsen, a guidance counselor at Knights Elementary School, was also recognized as Elementary Counselor of the Year. Others recognized as Counselor of the Year for middle, high, and multi-level schools respectively included: Lisa Shaw; Teresa Holcombe; and James Samuelson. Administrator of the Year awards honored Jaime Gerding for elementary level and Gregory Harkins for secondary level. Since the last gathering, three attendees accomplished the National Board Certified Counselor requirements: Kelli Godwin Davis, Virginia Watson, and Elena Musial. Shirley Redcay of Ippolito Elementary School was recognized for helping the school achieve R.A.M.P. status (Recognized ASCA Model Program) with the American School Counselor Association. The program established in 2003 promotes exemplary school counseling programs. Regan Knotts, a PCHS senior known for comppassionate community service accepted the HCA scholarship award. Congratulations and tremendous thanks are due those who care enough to allow every child a chance to be heard. foCUS Magazine Plant City march 2011

There’s More than the Show The 2011 Steer Show T Written By: Kristen Hitchcock

The Steer Show originated in 1972 when a group of exhibitors from Pinecrest, Turkey Creek, and Plant City took their steer over to the State Fair and were denied entrance into the competition. Albert Miles, Harry Carlton, and Roy Parke helped to organize the first Steer Show at the Strawberry Festival with 19 animals. This year 106 competed. The young exhibitors have worked all year to prepare their steer for show. Some have even shown in other events all around the state in order to prepare them for this night. One exhibitor, Plant City High School senior Calli Jo Parker has shown a steer in the Strawberry Festival for the past four years. Her steer this year was home bred

18

march 2011 thefocusmagazine.com

and homegrown. She has really enjoyed raising this steer from birth and getting him ready to show. But Cam, Calli Jo’s steer, has become more than just a project or a learning experience - He has become her pet. With adoration in her voice Calli Jo says, “He’s so sweet. He’s like a puppy dog.” Calli Jo isn’t the only one who has become attached to their steer. As you watch the exhibitors preparing their steer, grooming them, talking with them, and giving them food and water, fair visitors can sense these animals are special. Walking by their spaces in the barn, the steers’ names are prominently displayed. When it’s time to bring their steer or calves into the pen to be judged, the owners calm and guide the livestock as you would a child going out for a pageant. These steers have become like family members, which makes it extremely difficult to see the steers judged and eventually sold.

Also, much time, effort, and money have gone into raising the steers. Bill Burnett of Harold’s Farm Supply realizes the money it takes to feed the steer, so he started a Pay Back Program for the kids of the steer and swine show. In July, students can enroll at Harold’s Farm Supply. With the purchase of 11 bags of feed for your swine or 85 bags of feed for your steer, students qualify to be in the drawing. To start the night, Bill drew Levi Mayo’s name, and Levi was reimbursed $1194.73 for the price of his feed. Finally, the first class is brought out and it is time to see how they fare. Matt Warren, steer judge, has the difficult task of determining the winner in each class and division as well as the overall Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion. Matt reminds the youth of the most important thing: “It doesn’t matter if you place 1st or last. It’s just one person’s opinion.” Even so, walking out of the pen, exhibitors give their

steers those last words of encouragement, words like, “You did great.” This year’s Grand Champion was Miranda Mayo of Durant FFA, and Reserve Grand Champion went to Garrett Roberts of Durant FFA. The saddest night is when the exhibitors have to say goodbye. The steers are auctioned off at the Steer Sale four nights later. The 2011 Grand Champion sold for $9.50 per pound and Reserve went for $4.00 a pound. Although sad the young exhibitors learned valuable life lessons and did an outstanding job. watch

What’s Hot and Fresh Out of the Fryer? 2011 Super Dog Corndog Eating Contest H Photo by Kristen Hitchcock

Written By: Kristen Hitchcock

old on to your stomachs because they are about to go for a ride. Thirty 18-inch hot corn dogs plus 10 people plus 5 minutes equals 1 brand new contest.

On March 9th the Florida Strawberry Festival presented the 1st Annual Super Dog Corndog Eating Contest sponsored by Super Dog, a family owned operation based in Tampa, Florida. Their super dog is made up of three 6-inch hotdogs on 1 stick, dipped in their fresh homemade batter recipe which utilizes all local products. When asked why he chose to sponsor this event, owner, Rusty Groscurth laughed, “We make the corndogs and wanted to be a part of the action here at the festival.” With everything at the festival revolving around strawberries, where did the idea come from, you might ask? Lee Bakst, Assistant Manager of the Florida Strawberry Festival, thought it was an unbelievable idea. He wanted some type of entertainment that was more interactive with the crowd - not just

24

march 2011 thefocusmagazine.com

singing and dancing, but even more. The festival already had a strawberry shortcake-eating contest and everyone loves a good corndog, so together you get the newest event. Sign ups for entrants began at 12:30 and anyone attending the festival was eligible. From those registrations, ten names were drawn to compete against each other.

A chef, a pastor, a veteran, and a brother and sister were just some of the contestants drawn. James Campbell, contestant, insisted, “I’m not going to eat a mega dog, I’m going to win a contest.” These entrants were ready to compete. With an apron tied around their neck, the contestants sat down to eat. They were supplied the corndogs on a platter, water bottles on hand, and ketchup and mustard (just in case). A timer was set for five minutes and then the “Go” was given. Some ate the corndog on the stick, others pulled it off, and others broke it apart as they were eating. Contestants made sure to drink

water between each bite so their mouth wouldn’t dry out from the bread.

Mouths were full and time was called with some entrants still working on their first super dog. Every platter still had one whole corndog left untouched. Yet in the end, one man stood out from the rest because his 2nd corndog was almost completely gone. Thomas “Tommy” Clark was pronounced winner of the first Super Dog Corndog Eating Contest. What a deserving winner. Tommy came all the way from New Port Richey just for the corndog eating contest. “I read about it (corndog eating contest) in the paper and knew I had to come. I love corndogs.” This was Tommy’s first competitive eating contest, but he is willing to do it again. Tommy won a coupon for a free corndog, all the left over corndogs, and a large trophy with a pig

on top. With pure delight Tommy said, “I just bought a house and now I have something cool to put up in it.” As soon as the contest ended, Lee questioned, “I don’t know, what do you think - only two super dogs next year?” It’s on. See you next year.

Growing Together: Farm Credit’s Strawberry Salute Breakfast G Written By: Kristen Hitchcock

rand Parade Day of the Strawberry Festival is here again. Once again Farm Credit opened the day with a bountiful breakfast to celebrate the strawberry harvest. “It (strawberry harvest) makes Plant City what it is,” greeted 2011 Strawberry Queen Victoria Watkins.

Putnam believes agricultural activities are all about investing in young people for the future. Plant City is doing just that with the Strawberry Festival, the pageant, 4-H, and FFA. He has an example of what Plant City can produce. Erica Der, 2003 Strawberry Queen works on his staff. She is in charge of the Agriscience Education Leadership Program that has been active for over a decade. This program exposes middle and high school agriculture teachers and administration to the business of agriculture. “At the end of the day it is about that next generation closing the loop,” states Putnam.

Farm Credit has sponsored this event for almost 50 years. “The strawberry industry is very important to Farm Credit,” stated Reggie Holtz, President of Central Florida Farm Credit. Beauty Beyond the Crown 5th Grader Brooke Milam gets a surprise visit from Miss Delaware Kayla Martell Written By: Tara Parker

O

n paper Brooke Milam is an average 5th grader in Plant City Fla., but she lives with a condition most of our community and her fellow students didn’t even know exists. Milam was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata when she was three. Alopecia is neither contagious nor genetic but affects about 5 million people in the United States today. This disease doesn’t make you feel or look sick but it causes hair loss, which many find just as devastating. Many describe it as your body having an allergic reaction to your hair. For many years it has felt to Milam that she was dealing with this illness alone as she had never met anyone who had it. That was until a staff member at Advantage Academy felt compelled to make a move that would change Milam’s life forever. It was an ordinary evening when Michelle Reed, tuned the TV to the Miss America Pageant for the first time in her life as she did her household chores. Reed thought all the contenders

30

march 2011 thefocusmagazine.com

were strikingly beautiful but found it strange that “every time I would glance up Miss Delaware, Kayla Martell would be on”. When the evening gown portion of the competition began, Reed again caught Martell gracing the stage but this time she explained, “Martell was even more beautiful and was speaking about the National Alopecia Areata Foundation and the fact that she had no hair herself.” Remembering immediately one of her favorite girls at school, Brooke Milam, Reed knew this was her calling and an opportunity to do something for Milam, so she decided to write to the Miss Delaware organization in hopes of getting a picture or a letter sent to Milam. She never dreamed of the eventual outcome of her message. The organization contacted Reed and one thing lead to another. They planned for Martell to make the trip to Florida to see Milam and film a segment for the show, “The Doctors”, which is set to air in a few weeks. On February 20th Martell surprised Milam at her Plant City home and immediately they developed a bond that will never be broken. Milam was elated

and said, “I felt like I was all alone and the only one with this and now I feel like Miss Delaware and I are sisters”. Martell and Milam then spoke to the students at Advantage Academy on Monday February 21st and Martell gave the students sound advice about dealing with difficult circumstances, “Confidence is key and if you have confidence in yourself, no one can take that away from you.” After hearing the talk, the attentive and concerned students were more aware of this disease and how it has affected one of their own. This was the first of many surprises for Milam. After the assembly where she was crowned the honorary Miss

Delaware for the day, she left school and was taken to get a new wig from the same place Martell purchased the one she used in the Miss America competition. Milam and her family will also fly to Hollywood in California for the live taping “The Doctors” episode. Milam has high hopes for her future and one day wants to become a nurse just like her mother. All would agree that these ladies looked beautiful in their crown, but clearly their beauty lies deep within, as neither have allowed this condition stop them from living normal lives. Both are inspirational examples of confidence, hope and strength.

Reggie Dabbs addressing the students with a play set-up in the background Photo by Tara Parker

Reggie Dabbs Motivates Area Students in Hillsborough and Polk County Schools Written By: Aaron Grimsley

F

or the second consecutive year the world-renowned motivational speaker to teens, Reggie Dabbs, visited more than 30 schools with an empowering message of hope. Dabbs and his team of Masters Commission college students traveled to all eastern Hillsborough middle and high schools and four in Polk. The college team performed “human music videos” with the theme of love conquers all. He engages the audience with a little selfeffacing humor and his saxophone. Students sang along during the choruses of two songs inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr.: “I Believe I Can Fly” by R.Kelly and Michael Jackson’s classic, “Man in the Mirror.” It’s a sweet sound to hear teen voices in unison and a sweet sight to see them sway shoulder-to-shoulder. Because so many come from troubled families, they get it - his message of love wins ‘em over every time. Dabbs speaks on issues such as bullying, heartache, fear, death, the hero within, and of course, the power of love. He relates to feeling alone, forgotten, and

32

march 2011 thefocusmagazine.com

underappreciated because he grew up in a foster care. Words he uses to drive his point home include: “The reality of my past, known or unknown, is my history, not my destiny. “After sharing a little of his personal story, he reminds students, “You can’t change the past but you can change the future.” A speaker knows he’s hit his mark when the audience pursues him at the end of his talk. Dabbs stayed after each performance to hear from those who need help and to offer a hug to as many as needed one. He also invited teens and the community to five evening presentations, during which time he shares his faith. At the Strawberry Crest event, more than 60 young people responded to his invitation to know Christ. Teens regularly communicate and ask questions or for advice at www. reggiedabbsonline or his Facebook page. Dabbs concluded by saying, “Every kid can become a hero but we must, as a society, believe in them to live out their potentials.” Believe and love - it’s an uplifting combination.

Reserve Grand Champion another amazing honor for the swine show was awarded to Michaella Christie. Michaella was so humble when she said, “It feels pretty awesome I didn’t expect it.” The participants love raising their pigs, but it doesn’t end at the show. The culmination of the whole event is the Swine Sale held the next evening. The Swine Sale gives area businesses and individuals the ability to auction on the pigs. When asked what he thought the pigs would go for, Jon Poppell stated, “I hope between 4 and 5 dollars per pound.” That hope was beat. Jeff Sumner of Farm Bureau bought the Grand Champion for $9.50 a pound, and the Reserve Grand Champion went for $5.00 a pound, by M F Burgin. The average sale price of the evening was $4.95. onths before the 2011 Florida Strawberry Festival ever gets started, youth in the Hillsborough County area begin preparing for the 2011 Swine Show. By November of 2010 each participant had presented his or her pig to be tagged for the show. At this time the pigs normally weigh between 25 and 60 pounds, but by show time some weighed close to 400 pounds.

The 39th Annual Swine Show and Sale took place March 3rd and 4th in the Patterson Companies Livestock Arena. As the opening day of the festival was coming to a close, these youth began to prepare their pigs for the start of the show. This year there were 78 participants, three more than the allowed 75 of the rules. “We want all the youth to be able to participate,” stated Jon Poppell, Swine Show Chairman. These students’ pigs were then divided up into 10 different weight classes separated by only 4 to 6 pounds. The students and their parents put a lot of hard work and dedication into raising

their pigs. After being asked what it takes, Rachelle Sapp said, “It was a really big responsibility. You always have to be on top of your game and do what you think is best for your pig.” The students not only focus on the pig’s health, but also on the ability to show the pig. “It’s a pretty good bit of hard work. You have got to work hard in the pen with them if you want them to walk good in the pen,” stated McKenzie Wheeler.

The pigs are judged on muscle tone, appearance, and body structure. One judge takes on the challenge of deciding whom to award first through eighth in each class. However, there can only be one Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion for the entire show. All first place winners are brought back into the arena to be judged for these two honors. The night could not have gone any better for one family. The Conrad sisters stole the show. Madilyn and Ana Conrad both won a first place in their corresponding weight classes, and Madilyn and her pig, Gemma, were honored with Grand Champion.

ome say beauty is fleeting, but like a rose, true beauty from within just blossoms. February 19th, 1931, Irma Josephine Barta, a natural beauty, was born in Sydney, Florida. Her parents were hardworking, Hungarian immigrants trying to live the American dream. The family home was a 40-acre farm on Gordon Street where they grew strawberries and peppers. Later the family relocated to the Seminole Lake area, and Irma lived there until she married.

The European old country values system ruled in Irma’s family. Softly, she said, “I had a pretty easy life. My parents were kind of strict…not real strict.” In the home her parents spoke only Hungarian, making her first year of school somewhat difficult. She remembers Ms. Irvin Wilder, 1931 Strawberry Queen and teacher at the time, tutoring her in English. She started school at Jackson Elementary, then progressed

“I was just an average student,” she said humbly. The 1948 PCHS Kanyuksaw yearbook contradicts her modesty. Her involvement included Kiwanettes, football, basketball, F.H.A., and Senior Superlatives, voted Best Dressed. A quote in the yearbook best describes her: “She has that fatal gift of beauty and honest sense of duty.”

During her senior year Irma worked as an usher at the Capital Theatre. After graduation, she attended business school in Lakeland, where she was noticed by the Lakeland Ledger and photographed for a story titled Good Secretary/Bad Secretary. In 1950 she was hired by the J. William Horace Corporation and immediately they asked to sponsor her for the 1951 -52 Strawberry Queen Pageant. She ended

he Plant City Garden Club’s Flower Show “Give Our Regards To Broadway” was a huge success! Close to 200 visitors. “Twelve judges gave the show a rating of 95 plus, which we needed in order to apply for National Garden Club Awards” stated show chairwoman Cassandra Banning. It was a lot of fun and the hostesses all got into the spirit of going to a Broadway show in New York, dressing in formal gowns, with a member playing the part of “Joan Rovers” interviewing guests as they arrived , just like the opening of a new Broadway Musical. Plant City Entertainment set the stage by performing a selection of Broadway tunes during dinner at the Walden Lake Country Club. A first for the club was having three novice winners in the floral design division. Loretta Scott; Eileen Reed and Dee Clark. The Designer Choice Award went to Jan Griffin; Tri-Color Award was won by Darcy Stottlemyer and Loretta Scott walked away with the Table Artistry

Award. The overall Design Excellence Award was won by Darcy Stottlemyer with her underwater design in “Little Mermaid.” The People’s Choice Award winner was Loretta Scott.

The Horticulture Division was superb with 127 entries and several winners as well. Merit Awards went to: Liz Miller; Jan Griffin; Eileen Reed and Sandra Lodato. The Growers Choice Awards went to Mikie Snyder and Sandra Lodato. Margaret Rodwell won the Arboreal Award with Jan Griffin taking the Collectors Display. Eileen Reed received The Horticulture Excellence Award for her Bromeliads. The Educational Exhibitor Award was won by the team of Darcy Stottlemyer, Mikie Snyder and Cassandra Banning for their exhibit on the Blue Star Memorial at Veteran’s Memorial Park at Courier Field. Ideas and plans are already starting for next year’s flower show so stay tuned.

BOB EDWARDS TO RECEIVE HERITAGE AWARD AT PLANT CITY PHOTO ARCHIVES AND HISTORY CENTER’S NINTH ANNUAL GALA L submitted By: Plant City Photo Archives & History Center

ocal attorney Robert “Bob” Edwards will receive the coveted Heritage Award at the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center’s ninth annual gala scheduled for Thursday, March 31st at the Red Rose Ballroom, Red Rose Inn & Suites in Plant City. In making the announcement, Photo Archives’ president, Ed Verner, said Edwards has been involved in the preservation of the community’s history and heritage since he first arrived in Plant City in 1955.

A 1953 graduate of the University of Florida Law School, Edwards settled in Plant City after a tour of duty with the United States Air Force and joined former law school friend, Woodie Liles, in the practice of law. Edwards went on to gain an outstanding reputation in law and in community affairs. Although his family roots go to north Florida, south Georgia, and farther back to the Carolinas, Robert Sydney Edwards was born in Miami, July 10, 1929. The family returned to Mayo, Lafayette County, Florida, about 1932, where Edwards attended public schools, graduating in 1947 as Salutatorian of his class. He was also student body president, and lettered in basketball. Bob Edwards then entered the University of Florida and participated in the Air Force ROTC

program, worked two part-time jobs, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1951. He entered the University of Florida Law School, where he met Woodie Liles, a Plant City native. They graduated in 1953 and were admitted to the practice of law. After a two-year tour with the United States Air Force, Bob joined Woodie in Plant City and formed the law firm of Liles and Edwards in 1955. Bob Edwards fell in love with Plant City and devoted the following decades to his law practice and to civic and community affairs. Bob Edwards became involved with the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Council, the Main Street program, Citizens for Positive Growth, Hillsborough Community College, Tampa General Hospital, the Hillsborough Planning Commission, the Plant City Swim Club and the YMCA, the First Methodist Church, and many other organizations and causes. Bob Edwards was honored as the Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Plant City civic clubs in 1994, and, an Eagle Scout at 15 years of age, he received the Friends of Scouting Distinguished Citizen Award in 2008. This year he will be recognized for his efforts on

behalf of the preservation of the history and heritage of the community and will be the recipient of the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center’s prestigious Heritage Award. 2011 ANNUAL GALA This year the annual gala will be held at the Red Rose Ballroom, Red Rose Inn and Suites in Plant City, beginning with a Champagne Reception at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will be treated to the mellow jazz of the Florida Southern College Jazz Combo, an exhibit of numerous historic photographs sponsored by Tampa Electric, a photo display by Plant City High School students, a photo opportunity sponsored by Sunshine State Federal Savings and Loan, an elegant buffet, a complimentary wine bar sponsored by George and Cassandra Banning, a splendiferous Photo Trivia Contest sponsored by Hopewell Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, and a musical selection provided by the Plant City High School Chorus, followed by the presentation of the Heritage Award. We’re fortunate to have so many great restaurants in Plant City. Some are family restaurants that have been around for years. Some operate in locations where others have failed. Some are restaurant chains, and others have barely been in business more than a year. They serve different types of food - Italian, steak, diner, breakfast, and some are only open for lunch or until they’ve sold out. But all in all, there’s one thing great restaurants have in common - great customer service. And great customer service is most noticeable with the person who takes your order, delivers the meal to the table and makes sure your visit is a great one. These are the people who can make or break a restaurant all on their own. This year, Focus Magazine tallied up your votes to identify the top server in Plant City. The winner was announced at the Focus Magazine 9th anniversary party on Thursday February 17th. Five servers were nominated: Andy Auner of O’Brien’s, Jessica Ardrey of Cowboy’s and Outback, Brittany DeVane from Snellgrove’s, Jessica Metzger from Johnson’s Barbeque, and John O’Toole, server and bartender at the Red Rose. They’re all great at what they do, and you’ve noticed. More than 7000 votes were cast, but only one could be the winner. So for 2010, the top server in Plant City is Jessica Ardrey. I spent a few minutes with each of them, and here’s what they had to say.

54

march 2011 thefocusmagazine.com

Focus: How long have you worked as a server? Auner: I’ve been a server a little over 13 years. I started at Cracker Barrel in Cleveland, Ohio. Ardrey: Going on five years. DeVane: I have worked there full-time as a server for 10 years. Metzger: Since I was a junior in high school, six years. O’Toole: Oh, my gosh. I don’t have to tell you that do I? Let’s see, over 30 years. Focus: How long have you worked at your current restaurant? Auner: I’ve been at O’Brien’s since we opened, about four and a half years. Ardrey: I’ve been at Cowboy’s for almost a year and Outback for almost two years. DeVane: My parents are the owners, so I’ve only worked at Snellgrove’s. Metzger: I’ve only worked as a server at Johnson’s, so six years. O’Toole: More than seven years. Focus: What was the most difficult thing to learn about being a good server? Auner: One of the most difficult things for me is learning people’s names. There are so many. [Laughing] And there are some you wish you never remembered. Ardrey: Patience. There are so many different personalities to work with and those that you’re serving, so I had to learn patience really quick. But it’s helped me in serving and in life. DeVane: It really came easy to me because I was raised in it. But probably the most difficult thing is to learn how to multitask and when you’re in that business, you can’t let your emotions from your personal life show. Sometimes, everyone has that problem. And because it such a customer interactive business, and a home atmosphere, it was difficult to do that. I started at such a young age and had to learn to hide my emotions. O’Toole: I started at a fine dining restaurant in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The hardest thing was probably trying to learn the menu and drinks. There’s a lot to learn on a fine dining menu. I did tableside cooking, too. I did Steak Diane, Caesar salads, Fettuccini Alfredo. It was a lot of hard work.

Focus: What do you like most about being a server? Auner: I really enjoy interacting with the customers; whether it’s explaining just how bad the Gators are in any sport – from behind the bar, or just trying to remember the events from the night before.. Ardrey: Getting to know the customers. DeVane: It’s just like home. Everyone who comes into the restaurant knows me. It’s very personable. Metzger: Meeting people. We get all the snowbirds that come down and they have all these great stories. O’Toole: Interacting with the guests. I really like getting to know the regulars. On Thursday nights, it’s singles night at the Red Rose, and I’ll know everyone by name and what they drink. It makes the job a lot of fun.

Brittany DeVane Focus: What’s your favorite item on the menu? Ardrey: At Cowboy’s it’s the 10-ounce flat iron steak. It’s listed as a sirloin, but it’s more of a shoulder roast. So you get the tenderness of a filet with the density of a rib eye. And I love our sweet potato soufflé. At Outback it’s the chicken on the Barbie with broccoli. It’s my absolute favorite. DeVane: We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast, I love the biscuits and gravy. For lunch or dinner, I love the country fried steak with our white gravy. Metzger: Probably the smokin’ nachos. O’Toole: The Oak Grilled Filet Mignon.

Focus: When you eat out, what’s your favorite restaurant and why? Auner: Charley’s. I’m a steak guy. Ardrey: I love the Sandbar on Anna Maria Island. It’s just a place to go and get away. I love the beach and it’s just so quiet. DeVane: My family and I love going to Carrabbas. They treat us just like we treat our own customers. We’re very close to them and we like the atmosphere. Everyone is very laid back and very friendly. Metzger: It’s called Taco Bus, because it’s kind of a hole-in-the-wall place, but the food is great. O’Toole: I really don’t go out to eat that often. I really like to stay home and cook for my family. I cook all kinds of things, but my favorite is probably Mexican dishes.

John O’Toole

Jessica Metzger

Focus: Customers like great customer service. Is there anything you do on a regular basis to deliver great customer service, something that might set you apart from others? Auner: I just get the job done. Ardrey: I treat all my customers like family. I just try to make them comfortable. I try not to make them feel like they’re being waited on but like they’re family. I want them to know that if they need anything, they just need to let me know. I want them to say, “I want Jessica. She takes care of me all the time.” DeVane: Because we’re such a small town and we have a lot of regulars, I would have to say that I’m good about seeing them pull up to the restaurant. I’ll have their drink on the table ready for them when they sit down and I’ve already placed their order for them. I can tell you the number of creams and sugars people like, and I know who’s typically in a hurry, so I can get them in and out. Metzger: There’s a slogan I like to think of, “Serve smiles daily.” O’Toole: Sure, having their drink ready for them when they’re taking their seat. Remembering their names and their drinks is really important. It lets them know that you’re paying attention. Focus: Describe the most challenging situation you’ve faced as a server. Auner: Breaking up a fight when the people involved are twice my size. It’s not my favorite moment. Fortunately, it doesn’t happen very often. Ardrey: People with allergies. I get so nervous, especially if it’s a

Jessica Ardrey peanut allergy. There are just so many precautions to take. People can die from their allergies. DeVane: Since my parents are the owners, I think they expect me to always be the best. That’s a lot of pressure. I’m just a server. But when I’m on the floor, they expect me to set a standard and sometimes it’s hard to live up to their expectations when we’re so busy. Metzger: When there’s a breakdown in communications. When you’re trying to deliver good customer service, but the customer doesn’t understand you. O’Toole: If you’re understaffed and the restaurant is busy, that’s probably the most challenging situation. But you just have to keep plugging away and know that you’ll get caught up at some point. On a lighter note, when I was a manager at a restaurant in Daytona, we had a 98-year-old lady who would come into the bar and if someone was sitting in her regular seat she’d start hitting them with her purse until they moved. Her name was Myrtle and I’ve never forgotten her. Great customer service, especially in the restaurant industry, isn’t always easy to find, but you know it when you experience it. If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing service by any of these nominees, ask for them the next time you visit their restaurants. And if you haven’t been to one of these restaurants, maybe this is a good reason to visit. Thanks so much to each of you for your exceptional service. Keep up the great work. Congratulations, Jessica. You’re our top server.

Do Some Spring on Your Cleaning (Financial) House I submitted By: edward jones

t’s spring — time to clean out the gutters, tune up the lawnmower and wash down the windows. But as you attend to these types of tasks around your home, why not take the time to do some financial “spring cleaning” as well? Specifically, consider these moves:

* “Dust off ” your investment strategy. If there’s an area in your home that you haven’t looked at for a while, you may need to dust it off in preparation for the new season. And the same principle may apply to your investment strategy — if you haven’t examined it for a while, it may be time to clean it up to prepare for a new season in your life. After all, since you initially designed your investment strategy — that is, the total amount you invest, the percentages going into “growth” and “income” vehicles, the dollars going into taxable versus tax-deferred accounts and so on — many things may have changed for you, such as your employment situation, the number of children in your household and even your long-term goals. Consequently, you may need to revise your investment strategy in consultation with your financial advisor. * “De-clutter” your portfolio. The chances are pretty good that if you look around your house, you’ll find many things that are actually duplicates, such as those five coffeemakers you’ve accumulated over the years — so you decide to “purge” a few. And when you take a close look at your portfolio, you might find several investments that you’ve added over time and that are similar to each other. If that’s the case, you might help yourself by selling the “redundant” investments and using the proceeds to buy different ones that can help you diversify your portfolio.

(Keep in mind that while diversification can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t guarantee gains or prevent losses.) * Prepare yourselfforstormy weather. During springtime, we often experience heavy rains, hailstorms, high winds and other types of inclement weather. That’s why we keep our roofs in good shape, keep branches away from our homes and take other steps to protect our houses and property from the ravages of Mother Nature. You and your family could go through some rough “weather” too, during the course of your lives, so you’ll want to make sure you have sufficient protection in the form of adequate life and disability insurance. Review your coverage to make sure it’s still adequate for your needs. * Open up the windows of opportunity. After a long winter, you’ll find it pleasant to open the windows of your home and let in the sun and the air. And as an investor, you’ll find “windows of opportunity” through which you can open yourself up to good investment possibilities. For example, even though we’ve clearly been in a challenging economy the past couple of years, a number of factors – such as low interest rates, improved corporate earnings and favorable stock valuations (the price you pay for a stock, relative to its earnings) — have actually meant that it’s been a pretty good environment for investors looking for quality stocks. By doing some financial spring cleaning, you may find that you’ve swept away some of the obstacles to helping achieve your goals.

“Taking care of yourself has never felt better”

reasons you need massage

LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE

» How did you get into this business?

A few years ago our granddaughter became a caregiver for a lovely lady who had developed Alzheimer’s disease. She enjoyed it so much that she encouraged us to start our own company. She now works for us in Polk County and sometimes Highland County. Our company was founded in 2007 on the ideal that we can provide anyone with assistance in their home in order for them to remain in their familiar environment for as long as possible and keep their independence as well. We continue to care for our first two clients from the inception of our company.

» What are your aspirations?

While massage does not remove plaque blockage (the main cause of high blood pressure), it does initiate the relaxation response of the parasympathetic system causing muscles to relax, breathing to slow and deepen, and blood vessels to expand allowing blood to flow more freely...thus lowering blood pressure.

We are inspired by our clients and their families. When we are successful in finding the perfect caregiver to match our clients’ needs and personality as well as please their family members, then we have met our goals. We ultimately strive to be the best we can be. We want to assure you that we pride ourselves on excellence, integrity and most of all, client dedication. Client care is our number one priority.

We offer respite care for you as well. If you are a caregiver to your family member, we can give you a break to go on vacation or travel or just to go shopping. If your loved one is currently in a facility, we will visit the facility as often as you like to oversee the daily care of your loved one. We also provide

Our greatest reward has been meeting some of the most awesome people we have ever known. We continue to enjoy every aspect of our business, however, our greatest success is knowing that we can provide services for people that allow them to continue living on their own and maintain their homes and be safe and comfortable. We provide them with home cooked meals, change their linens, perform light housekeeping duties as well as laundry and provide transportation to outings, church, doctor visits, and grocery shopping. Most of all, we provide companionship so that your loved ones will not be lonely. These services can relieve the family members of the great burden of trying to maintain their own homes as well as the home of a loved one. “Being a long distance caregiver (I live in WI; Mom is in FL), it is essential for me to have people I can trust and rely on caring for my mother. Helping Hands Caring Hearts beat out everyone else I interviewed in person several years ago. Christine, Leonard and staff have always been caring, cooperative, compassionate, flexible and accessible to both my mother and me. Besides meeting my mother’s every need, they have kept me completely informed as to how she is doing. I would highly recommend Helping Hands Caring Hearts. My mother and I are extremely blessed to have them in our lives.”

» What do you have planned for your future?

We currently work in Hillsborough, Polk and Highlands Counties. In the future we would like to expand into other counties to provide our services to anyone who needs us. We offer services for as little as 3 hours per visit or as much as 24 hours a day, 7 days week. You can reach us 24 hours a day at (813)737-6706 or (863)812-4752.

Meena Kukreja Plant City R.ph-MBA Discount Pharmacy » How did you get into business?

I come from a family with pharmacy background. I always loved being a pharmacist and helping people. I wanted to go above and beyond my line of duty, but I had restrictions in other companies. So having my own business was the perfect way of fulfilling my dream.

» What are your aspirations?

All these years Society has given me so much, I now think it is my duty to give back something to the society. I want to be a successful citizen by helping everyone I can with my 10 years of experience and knowledge.

» What inspires you?

“A job is what we do for money, work is what we do for love,” said by Michael Parenti is what I truly believe in. Working for what you love, not only is selfsatisfying but you can share more with the society.

» What are your greatest successes?

Being an entrepreneur was my dream. Being a successful pharmacist was a big success, but being a successful entrepreneur is my bigger vision. At Plant City Discount Pharmacy we have chosen to match all the discounts the big chains offer and bring them under one roof. Now people can still save as much money, but one pharmacy can track all the different prescriptions someone is taking in order to avoid health risks. This is definitely our greatest success because it is in the best interest of our customers.

MICROCHIP YOUR PET TODAY.

Microchipping is a simple procedure. A veterinarian simply injects a microchip, about the size of a grain of rice (12mm), beneath the surface of your pets skin between the shoulder blades. The process is similar to a routine shot, takes only a few seconds, and your pet will not react any more than he would to a vaccination. A microchip is a permanent pet ID. It is read by passing a microchip scanner over the pets shoulder blades and can positively identify the pet. If your pet gets lost and is taken to an animal shelter or veterinarian, they will scan the microchip to read its unique code. This is the number used to identify the pet and retrieve your contact information, which is used to contact you and reunite you with your pet.

I feel proud, satisfied and content in serving the needy. I want to take my pharmacy to next level of service where people can find the pharmacy as pleasing and easy as your own home and family. foCUS Magazine Plant City march 2011

How Buying new SaveS You MoneY

W

hen in the market for a home, most people consider the question “Do I want a new home or an existing home?” Each has its benefits, of course. As a new home builder, we want you to understand what we believe to be the overwhelming advantages of buying new.

WALDEN POINTE

ouse” ” and the entire “CoolH Come see the “Pinnacle 0’s. $17 inte, starting from the Po en ald W at n io ct lle . Co able now, so don’t delay ail av e ar gs vin sa n tio Preconstruc

90! 2649 SF FOR JUST $194,9

The most important reason to buy new is simple: It’s All New! Think about that. You are the first to put the key in the door, first to walk on the carpet, first to fill the dishwasher. Over the years, of course, your home will bear the marks of use, but they’ll all reflect your family’s, and only your family’s memories. A new home is all about YOUR choices, not someone else’s. You can choose your floor plan, and often structural options to fine-tune that floor plan to your needs. Choose the countertops, the cabinets and the fixtures. You can select energy-efficiency features that go beyond those already built in to most of today’s new homes. Your technology choices abound: you can choose where you want cable, data or telephone outlets or select structured wiring packages that will carry you seamlessly into future technology. You choose your neighborhood, your homesite in that neighborhood and the landscaping on that homesite. And you can secure YOUR home with the systems or features you choose for your peace of mind. It might not be obvious to you, but another compelling reason to buy new is value. Your dollar will very often buy you much more, new, and here’s why. First, your new home is likely to be much more energy efficient than one built just a few short years ago – and that’s saving you dollars every day. And you’ll be buying exactly the house you need, and no more. That’ll help on energy, insurance and property taxes. You won’t have immediate repairs and somebody else’s deferred maintenance to pay for, and you won’t have to do any renovation (painting, carpet, fixtures, appliances, countertops, cabinets, dated tile, et cetera). You’ll have lower insurance costs because insurers know that newer structures are stronger structures. And, of course, you’ll have a warranty on materials and workmanship. Add these up, and that foreclosure or short sale just might not look like such a bargain.

GET 713 SQUARE FEET,

FREE!

Your new home will be more comfortably “livable”. New home builders never stop learning about buyers’ changing needs and desires; they can’t afford to. So your new home will offer the “flexible spaces”, ample storage, attractive kitchens and comfortable master suites demanded by today’s home buyers. New homes are safer, too, with updated plumbing and electrical codes, more stringent structural code requirements, better fire resistance and no toxic materials like lead, asbestos or Chinese drywall. And you won’t have to worry about mold lurking behind the walls from some water leak long ago.

Come to think of it, buying new might just be the only way to have YOUR OWN home.

Mud Lake

Finally, you’ll find a new home to be easier to maintain. Building components are constantly being improved for lower maintenance, as are the major systems of the house. The home will be initially easier to maintain, of course, simply because it’s new.

The Strawberry Classic Car Show, Plant City Bike Fest and many other downtown events surround this two story, 4000 sq ft, newly renovated (in 2005) commercial building in the historic district of Downtown Plant City. Rooted deep in the community, as it was once the town’s hospital, shoe store, restaurant and most recently the offices of Focus Magazine. This building has it all: exposed brick walls, a full service cafÊ with drive through window, completely wired with 16 data (cat 5) and phone jacks. Nothing was left untouched during renovation. This building has all new upgraded electric, plumbing, refurbished windows, drop ceiling, awning and paint. If you are looking for a building with character in a great location this one is for you.

We cannot stress enough that you should always lock your car doors especially if they are left out overnight. The Plant City Police Department notified Tom that 18 automobiles were burglarized in a one night crime sweep. Most of these cars were left unlocked! Many had valuables out in the open. Leaving your car unlocked is an open invitation for thieves to take what they want.

The candidates are: current board member, Jack Wolfe from the Hammocks, current board member, Karen Olsen from Tanglewood, Gary Sears from Silverlake, Steven Swantek from Sutton Woods and Heather Updike from Clubhouse Woods. Notices of the meeting and the proxy ballots will be mailed out on March 11th. Please return those to the office before the meeting if you are unable to attend. There will be about two dozen new trees planted in the medians and common areas mainly along Timberlane and Griffin Boulevard. I am also told that many of the entries will need to be replanted due to the freeze damage this year. The replanting will begin shortly after the Strawberry Festival ends.

It’s time to revitalize the lawns. Marlene Merrin is beginning to enforce the lawn/ yard neglect once again. Residents need to be aware there is a difference between neglect and freeze damaged lawns. Letters are being sent to those whose lawns have been neglected. Next month I will be reporting the first quarter 2011 real estate sales and statistics. Since writing the 2010 statistics, I have been asked by several residents to do this at least quarterly. Please feel free to contact me on any specific information by calling 813-758-9586.

Reverse Mortgages Do I Qualify?.......Why Would I Care? submitted By: nate davis

How do I qualify?? Some basic qualifications are: 1.

You and any co-borrowers must be at least 62 years of age

2.

You must either own your home or have a substantial equity

3.

Your home must be your principal residence

4.

Eligible homes are single family residences & various others

You should care if any of the following apply to you: 1.

You are “house rich and cash poor”

2.

You need additional income per month

3.

You do not need any more house payments

4.

You need or would like some immediate cash proceeds

5.

You would like some cash now and monthly payments to you

6.

You would like a cash line to draw upon when funds are needed

One of the problems as we grow older is to keep up with newer expenses along with our normal monthly expenses. A new roof/windows/other home repairs/continuing children expenses/illness/ are just part of what face us every day. In addition it would be nice to have some vacation money once in a while. A reverse loan can be the answer to adding value to your life. Please contact us if we can help. Contact Plant City Mortgage Corp at 813 707 6200 for next steps on your reverse loan.

Home Ownership to Job Growth and Essential Economy, Say Realtors® T submitted By: jo-ann lusk

estifying before a Senate panel, National Association of Realtors® President Ron Phipps told members of Congress that sustainable home ownership must be the goal when considering future federal housing policies.

still one of the best ways for individuals to build long-term wealth; therefore, we need public policies that support home ownership. Making it harder for families to afford safe mortgages does not further the goal of a housing or economic recovery,” he said.

“As the leading advocate for home ownership, NAR wants to ensure public policies that promote responsible, sustainable home ownership and that any changes to current programs and incentives don’t jeopardize a housing and economic recovery,” Phipps told the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.

Phipps agreed that reforms are required to prevent a recurrence of the housing market meltdown, but raising fees and increasing down payment requirements for well-qualified, creditworthy borrowers places an unnecessary burden on many families, especially those in high-cost urban markets.

Phipps said the housing market is starting to see signs of recovery; however, the real issue facing the nation right now is that many Americans can’t find meaningful work to support their families, and housing is essential to creating jobs. “Home ownership is a pillar of our economy; our research suggests that home sales in this country generate more than 2.5 million private-sector jobs in an average year. For every two homes sold, a job is created,” Phipps said. He added that, while housing alone may not pull America out of this stalled economy, hampering its recovery will severely and negatively impact the nation’s recovery. “Owning a home contributes to the strength of the nation’s economy and is

“Home buyers need a wide variety of traditionally safe, well-underwritten products with flexible down payment requirements,” said Phipps. “Overly stringent requirements will turn away 10 to 15 percent of otherwise qualified buyers who have a demonstrable ability to repay -- that’s approximately 500,000 home sales that won’t happen, further delaying the housing and economic recovery.” “We need to keep housing first on the nation’s public policy agenda to ensure that housing and national economic recoveries are sustained, and that anyone in this country who aspires to own a home and can afford to do so is not denied the opportunity to build their future through home ownership,” Phipps said.

Every year the Little League season sets underway in Plant City with an Opening Day celebration that includes team pictures, abbreviated exhibition games, and food

Opening Day Celebration Plant City Little League Kicks off 59th Season O written By: Joe Bowles

pening day for Plant City Little League in 2010 had its disappointments. Most of the activities never got started because of the torrential rain that began early and continued most of the day. This year was another story. Sunshine, balmy weather, fresh cut grass, freshly painted foul lines, and the smell of concession food greeted players, families and their guests to a day at the ballpark as excited future prospects from ages 4 to 15 began the 2011 season with a celebration of America’s pastime. What more could you ask for?

Every year the Little League season sets underway in Plant City with an Opening Day celebration that includes team pictures, abbreviated exhibition games, and food. This year was no exception, as more than 650 players representing 48 boys’ baseball teams and 12 girls’ softball teams made their way to Mike Sansone Park on Saturday, February 19 to kick off the new season. The history of Plant City Little League began in 1953 when former Pittsburg Pirate pitcher and Plant City

resident, Truett “Rip” Sewell along with other concerned citizens drafted a formal request that enabled Plant City to obtain the second Little League charter granted in the state of Florida. Sewell, an all-star hurler who invented the blooper pitch, passed away in 1989 but his dream of having a Little League in Plant City lives on.

Special guests on Opening Day included the newly crowned Strawberry Festival Queen, Victoria Garren, and her court who were on hand most of the day. In fact, Queen Victoria sang the National Anthem and threw out the first pitch.

food. Knotts’ Team Sports gave those in attendance the opportunity to purchase baseball equipment, shirts, and hats from their portable trailer. Inside the league’s boardroom, a silent auction was held by Collector’s Dream of Lakeland. Sports memorabilia and autographs were auctioned, with proceeds going to the league. The

Florida Strawberry Festival stayed busy selling discounted admission tickets and volunteers, like the Rotary Club donated their time to cooking hot dogs, handing out drinks, umpiring games, and helping with security. “I thought the day went very well,” commented Steve Shissler ( PCLL’s Treasurer and Information Officer, as well as, manager of the Minors’ Brandon Pest Control team). “The weather was so much nicer than last year. We had sunshine all day, whereas last year was cold and it rained most of the day… This year was fantastic. The raffle items were a huge success and many people were very proud when they looked at the flag pole and saw, not only the American flag flying high, but directly beneath, three district banners won by Plant City Little League All Star teams from last spring.”

Before each exhibition game, TSS Photography took team and individual pictures. Games followed one after another on the nine diamonds as a DJ played music and announced hourly raffle winners. In the middle of the afternoon, four grand prizes were awarded, an iPad, an Xbox 360 and two iPod Nanos. Stingray Chevrolet displayed their new cars and presented a generous gift to the league. Abe Fernandez B ad decisions lead to bad consequences. Bad consequences usually lead to other bad decisions, but occasionally the pain of a bad decision forces us to make a good decision. Such was the case with Abe Fernandez when he made a terrible decision to carry a gun to school four years ago. That one decision led to a ten-day suspension, placement in an alternative school, and the failure of eighth grade at Greco Middle School in Tampa.

march 2011 thefocusmagazine.com

With Peace’s help, Fernandez showed steady improvement. In his junior year, his runner-up finishes at district and regional competition qualified him for the state tournament. His grades improved and his GPA rose to 3.2. Fernandez also fared well at the state tournament, splitting four of his matches… but Fernandez wasn’t satisfied.

“I was shooting my BB pistol with my friends one afternoon. Later on I stuck the gun in my book bag,” said Fernandez. “The next day on the bus, I realized that I hadn’t taken the gun out of the bag. When I got to school, I was playing with my gun and showing it to some of my friends. That’s when I got in trouble. They suspended me for ten days. Then they set up a court date with the school board. I was sent to an alternative school, which I hated. I missed my final exams and ended up failing the eighth grade.”

By the time his senior season rolled around, Fernandez was ranked third in the state in his weight classification by Scout. com. He breezed through his district and regional matches and once again qualified for the state tournament that was held February 18-19 at the Lakeland Civic Center.

For Fernandez, that incident served as a wake-up call. He decided to get serious with school, and to stay away from the wrong crowd. In the meantime, Fernandez discovered wrestling. Wrestling was made for him. At 5’2” and 103 pounds, Fernandez couldn’t be a linebacker or a catcher, but he could wrestle young men his size to see who could be the best. In nearly all of his matches, Fernandez ended up being the best.

His best enabled him to move through the brackets with no losses until he reached the championship round. There he faced a wrestler he had met on four previous times, winning two of those encounters. This time, Fernandez lost on points, and was awarded a second place finish in the state tournament.

After Fernandez wrestled for two years at Middleton High School in Tampa, he heard about a new school that was about to open. He was looking for a fresh start, different surroundings, and new friends. That’s what he found when he went to Strawberry Crest High School. There was also an unexpected bonus to his transfer. Middleton’s assistant wrestling coach,

92

Anthony Peace, was hired to take over the new wrestling program for the Chargers.

“The first year I was really nervous but this year at state I really wasn’t that nervous. I just tried to do my best and that’s all I could do,” Fernandez reflected.

“My life is so different now. Wrestling means everything to me. It keeps me busy…keeps me off the streets and away from the wrong crowd,” Fernandez said. Fernandez is hoping to wrestle in college. Limestone University in South Carolina and Central College in Iowa are two schools interested in his talents. He’s not sure where he is going, but today he has options. Not bad for a kid who was going nowhere four years ago.

The gloves, bats, cleats, hats, and uniforms were perfectly matched to their size. They looked like miniature big leaguers, except they were so cute, that you wanted to squeeze them. Their coaches were great, too. None of the normal screaming, kicking dirt, or throwing tantrum that you see on TV. Instead, they were calm, instructive, and encouraging. “We’re just trying to teach them the fundaments. We didn’t have tee ball when I was growing up,” said Head Coach Keith Hicks. “The earliest you could play Little League was eight years old. I learned the game pretty quickly, but I might have been better if there would have been Tee Ball.”

Baseball Team W hen I was four years old, relatives visited us from Indiana. After supper, I was introduced to a game in the backyard called baseball. We used a rubber ball and a broken mop handle. Second base was the pole that held up the clothesline. First and third were pine trees and home plate was a clump of moss we pulled an oak limb. Whatever it might have looked like to our neighbors, we were playing baseball. Ever since then, I have had a love for the game. It is not a love for the home team, but a love for the game itself. I will watch anybody, anywhere, at any age, with any

For Hicks and his assembly of coaches, Rhett Rollyson, Chris Scott and Roger Miller, Tee Ball is about getting these boys better. It’s also about bonding with your own son and investing time in the lives of other boys, as well. It’s about seeing kids learning to play the game right. It’s about having a good time on a perfect Saturday morning.

skill level play America’s pastime. Such is the case every Saturday in the spring at Mike Sansone Park as five and six year olds gather for the early morning Tee Ball division games. Tee Ball is pure baseball. There are no winners or losers the first half of the year. In fact, no one keeps score until April. With the exception of a tee to hit from (if you’re unable to connect with the lobbed pitches of your own coach) and the unlimited number of players on the field, the game is basically the same as the one Evan Longoria plays.

The best part about Tee Ball is everyone is having fun. The stands are full of parents and other family members watching their favorite player. Their favorite player may not be able to catch very well, or run very fast, or even swing the bat with flair, but he is learning the game. Occasionally he will run the bases in reverse or throw dirt clods or kick up an anthill as the ball flies by, but he is still playing the game.

That’s exactly what they were doing. This team made up of Logan Scott, Lane Hicks, Kooper Yacinich, Hunter Miller, Adan Longoria (are you kidding me?), Jacob Landis, Justin Layton, Devon Gonzales, William Sotallaro, and Tanner Rollyson hasn’t won a title or championship. They haven’t even kept score, but that doesn’t matter because they are playing the greatest game in the world, baseball.

I watched March’s Baseball Team of the Month, Rollyson-Fearnow Insurance, play last Saturday as they took on another opponent in their quest to master the basics of the game. They had the right foCUS Magazine Plant City march 2011

Nathanael Cruzado senior of the month Written By: Brooke Allie

Miller loves spending time with her buddy Maurice who she has been matched with for two years and participates in the unified soccer team for the Special Olympics. Every Sunday, Miller and her buddy attend church together at Clair-Mel First Assembly of God, where Danielle attends her youth group and plays the piano in the church band. Miller and her family have been attending this church for many years and it has been a place for her to grow and nourish in her faith.

D

anielle Miller has spent her high school days dedicated to service, faith, and academics. She sets the standard for an all American girl and continues to push and achieve her goals. As president of Best Buddies, Miller says, “I am so proud of our Best Buddies chapter! This year the level of dedication has been so widespread and really touching. Playing soccer for Special Olympics has really been the highlight of my senior year, and our advisors, Ms. Denham and Ms. Everidge are such amazing people, whose caring never ceases to exceed my expectations.” The Plant City High School Best Buddies chapter is one of the largest in the state and is also a very active chapter. Just this past month they have held several events including: a Valentine’s Day Party, a movie day and a night of bowling at the local bowling alley. All the buddies and their matches enjoy spending time together and Miller is no exception. This love for community service has led her to several Special Olympics competitions and even to the honor of Best Buddies of Florida Outstanding Chapter.

When she’s not at church or with her buddy, you can probably find Miller at cheer. As a member of the varsity cheer squad at Plant City since her tenth grade year, Miller has devoted much time and dedication to the sport. Miller stated that, “Cheer, though we may have started the year off a little rough, everyone really pulled together and made the team what it should be. We all had a lot of fun and really made great memories together.” This past month, she participated in a stunt clinic at the University of Central Florida where she will be trying out for the cheer squad in May. Next fall, Miller will be attending Burnett Honors College at the University of Central Florida, where she will be a major contributor to such a wonderful university. Graduating ninth in her class with a GPA of 6.08 and an SAT score of 1370, Miller is heading into UCF with an impressive resume. Due to her impressive academic achievements she has received the College Board’s AP Scholar award and was the winner of the VFW Essay Contest. A strong leader and an even stronger role model, Miller is headed into college with the confidence to lead her to success. Her favorite quote, “In the end, no one will remember what you said or did, but how you made them feel.”, applies perfectly to how she has led her high school years.

aledictorian, 4.0 un-weighted GPA, and a 1600 composite SAT score, all showcase Nathanael Cruzado’s determined work ethic. He has a hunger for learning and perfection that shines through in all he applies himself to. Being Valedictorian at Plant City High School is something that Cruzado has been working towards since he was a freshman. He is known around the halls of PCHS as an extraordinary student and is unforgettable to his teachers. Due to his unique academic ability, Cruzado has won many awards and honors. He is a National AP Scholar, National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar, Rensselaer Medalist, just to name a few. He also competes in many academic competitions like the Reading Rumble, the Winter Math Bowl and the Optimist Speech Contest, all where he has won awards for placing in these tough competitions. Beyond his academic achievements, Cruzado has achieved a lot through his Boy Scout Troop, Troop 14. He is ranked as an Eagle Scout with three palms, the highest attainable rank in the Boy Scouts. With his troop he has attended conferences, a variety of community service activities and has been given a great way to exercise his leadership skills. Cruzado has established himself as a helping hand in the community and

His leadership also carries through to PCHS. Cruzado is the President of the Science Club, a hard-working member in Youth Alive and a General Officer in Leo Club, all clubs where he gets to lead peers with similar interests to his. This month as president of the Science Club he is preparing members for the upcoming Science Bowl held each year at MOSI. He will be organizing practices, as the bowl approaches and making sure the members of the Science Club are ready to compete. Working with the Youth Alive council, Cruzado has begun leading an apologetics study class during his lunch period once a week. He is eager to share his knowledge of the subject with his peers and those who attend have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. On top of his already long list of activities, Cruzado practices Shotokan karate at least twice a week. His time at Karate has earned him a second-degree brown belt and he is continuing to work towards the higher belts. Cruzado is the epitome of what dedication and hard work can do for a student. This senior is heading into college with a hunger to learn and a heavy grasp on what it takes to be successful.

Founded over a decade ago, by civil trial lawyers, Robert M. Austin and Michael V. Laurato, the law firm of Austin & Laurato, P.A. has established itself as one of the premier plaintiff ’s insurance litigation/sinkhole law firms in Florida. With offices located across the central part of Florida, Austin & Laurato, P.A. has brought together in one firm some of the most highlyexperienced and respected insurance/sinkhole litigators in the state. Recognized as leaders and pioneers in the sinkhole and insurance law arena, the attorneys of the firm have obtained significant verdicts and settlements in a multitude of sinkhole and insurance law cases. From homeowner to business owner, the firm, with its integrated, state-of-the-art information and case management software, has been able to offer state-wide representation to Florida citizens on all sinkhole, hurricane, and insurance issues. As one of the state’s most aggressive and largest sinkhole/insurance claims’ law firms, Austin & Laurato, P.A. has positioned itself to handle civil cases on behalf of insureds in the area of sinkhole, theft, comprehensive, business interruption, hurricane and wind claims, fire losses, and all other insurance coverage disputes. Austin & Laurato, P.A. is the execution of the founding partners’ vision to have an aggressive trial practice which is ready, willing, and able to level the playing field for all of Florida’s citizens against insurance companies. Michael Vincent Laurato, Sr., one of the firm’s founding partners, has been recognized as an outstanding trial lawyer, in both the federal and state courts. It was always Michael’s dream to find justice for all Americans, but he found his passion fighting against Florida’s insurance companies regarding homeowners’ claims. “It is tragic when a family loses a home following some form of disaster. Following that tragedy, Florida’s families have another fight—and that is one for fair and 34

prompt payment of the claim so that the family can get back up on their feet. “It is the firm’s aggressive, never-say-die attitude towards Florida’s insurance companies that wins our cases,” partner Robert Austin adds. Robert has been holding Florida’s reluctant insurance companies to task for nearly 25 years. In his practice, Robert spends most of his days working with geologists, geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and contractors analyzing sinkhole reports and the Florida Geological Survey data in his work on sinkhole cases. “The science is incredibly technical. It is a mixture of geology, engineering, and contract law that make it complex. A sinkhole has to be remediated and a home has to be stabilized. Doing it right and ensuring the insurance company is going to pay for it requires an experienced legal team with the dedication to take the insurance company to trial. We have assembled that team here.” Austin says. Hurricane and Sinkhole coverage, in some form, is mandatory on most policies of insurance, but many times homeowner, particularly with sinkhole coverage, do not have full coverage for all types of sinkhole losses. “It is important for homeowners to know before disaster strikes that there covered. One of the most important things I do on a daily basis is review my client’s insurance policies to verify if they have the coverage they need,” says Michael Laurato. “I want to be sure my client’s are covered and they have legal recourse against their insurance company if the unthinkable should happen.” A sinkhole and hurricane losses are two of the most common type of insurance losses on Florida’s west coast. Austin & Laurato, P.A. provides for a free consultation on all insurance or sinkhole related claims and does not charge any fees or costs if the case is lost. foCUS Magazine Plant City march 2011

Now, if that train had a way to get 18-wheelers on and off that stinking stretch of I-4, I’d even hold a fundraiser on its behalf. So if its not rail.. at least not yet… what is it? Try education-- building partnerships with the companies that produce the jobs and the institutions that are producing the job seekers. And it needs to reach down lower than that. Cue the fireworks. For arguments sake let’s get away from the teacher salary loggerhead. Somebody, somewhere has to have the courage and guts and smarts for us to answer these simple questions. 1. How can we best educate our children? The word “best” is such a tricky thing in a democracy where we want every child to be able to have equal opportunity to become whatever they want. When you find a one-size-fits-all education plan… let me know. 2. Are we as a society willing do whatever it takes to make that wonder plan happen? In theory, maybe yes, but in reality the answer is no. We only tend to fund what gives us the most outcome right now. When the economy is so tight we are too worried about paying today’s bills, much less tomorrow’s dreams. Parents would be for it… some fixed income folks, seniors, couples without kids… might find it hard to swallow.

ou get the sense the Tampa Bay Region is on the verge of something if you can figure out what that something is.

For the past several months we all thought it might be high speed rail with its promise to tie Tampa, Orlando and Miami into this giant super destination. Sorry that Pinellas was left out of the picture. Well, for a billion and a half reasons that all start with S and end in TT that was

taken away. I’m kind of a science geek so anything that goes fast and is cool and filled with exciting possibilities turns my crank, so to speak. I still can’t get over the shuttle program going away. This is going to be one huge bummer of a summer.

Let’s not pretend there weren’t a lot of reasons for and against the project particularly from one of the guys who was responsible for making sure the state secured the right away on which to build the rail.

Back to rail, I talked with the folks who crunched the numbers on both sides and it appeared to be the old moon is made of green cheese, or is it Swiss argument. No one would go so far as to say someone was lying… but something didn’t quite fit.

Former State Senator Jim Sebesta loves rail and still believes is does fit in the picture…. somewhere. He says this particular plan was ill conceived from the get go because it failed to tie together the two major airports and Pinellas in a way that would have insured ridership by

3.Do we even care if the United States regains its position as one of the most innovative, educated nations in the world? Put me down as a yes on that. I’m not so sure the rest of the electorate feels that way. Heck, they barely show up at the polls to vote for their own leaders. And here’s the bottom line on this “verge of something” idea. Until we can all agree on what that is and dedicate even just a portion of our energy in that direction the Tampa Bay region will always been known as the rejoin that HAD a super bowl champion, that HAD a Stanley Cup champion, that HAD a world series contender, that HAD a shuttle program. Looking in the rearview mirror is no way to get to the future.

And she shared good words of life, words of eternal life. Our lives cannot be measured or evaluated in the limited language of chronological time. “Living (on earth) alone,” she said, “is not enough of an explanation for LIFE...” Rebekah said that everyone - irrespective of their religious persuasion, or their interest in Christianity, or their inclination toward the particular practice of faith that we understand - everyone feels some intuitive response or sense of angst or aching need for some story of truth to fill the nagging void at times like this. Each one of us has a unique story, one that can only be fathomed when understood in the context of the Greatest Story Ever Told. Audrey Rose not only is a story, but she has a story too. Our spirits, mine and yours, were conceived and are anchored in the eternal. Audrey is now experiencing such completeness of love and she is being nourished in the presence of God.

Sarasota, Saturday afternoon - this was a hard one. I can still see it clearly, standing in a quiet graveyard in the rain, holding an umbrella over my wife, Rebekah, as she speaks to the small crowd of family and friends gathered around the tiny grave. But to witness such pain in people we care about so deeply! My niece Hannah knelt in the dirt - unconscious of the rain and the mud - to place the tiny coffin in the ground. And she cried with her husband, Andrew - along with little Haley and Hudson - as they tenderly took their leave of this particular hope and promise. And they placed rose petals where the body lay. And the immediate family released pink balloons that floated out over the oak hammock and into the brooding sky. I always feel especially close to God at times like this. I believe that moments of birth and of parting - and this was, in a sense, both an introduction and a farewell - are moments when it is unusually simple to reach out and touch divinity. The point of God in the face of grief is the reality of God’s presence more than a corrective intervention designed to make our lives easier or more to our liking. God with us is God for us.
