Letter From The Publisher You hear it all the time, “I didn’t realize it until it happened to me.” For whatever reason, no matter how many times information is repeated to us, it doesn’t ever sink in until it applies to us personally or someone we love.
See why everyone is driving to Bartow to buy a car from TOM EDWARDS.
Case in point, my family and I were at the beach last weekend when my wife got the call that her sister had been rushed to the hospital because she’d had a heart attack. It’s in those moments that the world suddenly stops. Anything else you were doing ceases to matter and all you want to do is get home. As I am writing this letter, she is undergoing a double bypass open-heart surgery and it feels so strange that the world keeps moving on even when hers has stopped. The best part about it is that my family can rest at peace that she’s in good hands. Even though we may not regularly recognize the physicians in our community, we expect them to be there when we need them. We expect them to know what they are doing. We expect them to know the latest advances in the industry. It really is a lot of pressure, but we hardly ever stop to think about it.
Hopefully, you’ll even learn about some of the basics of keeping yourself healthy. Too often we neglect the basic maintenance that keeps us at the top of our game, such as our yearly check-ups, our chiropractic alignments, or our dental cleanings. Taking care of ourselves now, can prevent those phone calls that make the world stop turning later.

Adventure four paintball
Story by Sophia Hyde Photos by Anthony Sassano & Dede Floyd
t the beginning of the year, the Focu s Magazine staff set out a mission. Our goal was to take on 11 adventures in 2011. There were man y people on our staff who had different fears, or had never challenged themselves to try somethin g outside of their comfort zone. Our first adventure was racing go-karts. DeDe Floyd smoked ever yone, inclu ding former pro motocross racer, Mike, her husband. In February we paid a visit to Boing, an indoor trampoline facility and were shocked athow in less than one hour of jumping we barely had enou gh energy to stand. Early one morning in March, we loaded up the truck and drove to the bay for som e offshore fishing to catch some sharks.
Master strategists, Mike and Anthony, implementing their offensive tactic.
This month, we strapped on protectio n and hit the fields with loaded guns , paintball guns that is. Action Paintball warmly welcomed us to their facility in Winter Haven. Many on our staff had never played paintball before, so they went over all the rules and gave the safety instructions. We were divided into two teams and sent to the field. Some of the staff brought their children so we had players that ranged from 10 years old to their forties. The funny thing is, once that mask is on, ever yone is equally threatening. Our team huddled up and discussed some quick strategy, then went to the starting point and waited for the cue. When the ref yelled go, we raced to our barracks to find prot ection behind whatever we could find. Some people stayed behi nd to guard the back, while others offen sively tried to move forward to take out the opponents. Ang el was the first one out and then sudd enly the players started trickling away one by one. Mike Floyd, a member of the black team shouted “They’re all out except for Seth. He’s hiding in the back.” There were four black players and Seth was the only green one left. Seth is Angel’s 13-year-old son, who ever yone thought of as the shy quiet kid. It seemed obvious who was going to attain the first victory.
No amount of armor and weaponry can make Anthony look intimidating. Dede out for carnage!
Just goes to show you that with som e good strategy and good aim, a 4:1 ratio doesn’t mean you’ve lost. Ever yone was caught off guard by Seth ’s skill and he was one of the strongest players on the field all day. We played several more games and the teams ended up tying by the day’s end. Two victories for each side. Slap wore out of energy and with a few bruises on our bodies, we loaded up the cars and headed home.
Shana shows of her battle scars.

But Seth was hidden well and before you knew it, Seth had hit both Mike and Tony. The only members left on the black team were Sophia Hyde and Zane Floyd, Mike’s 10-year-old son. They were hiding together in a pit in the very back of their side, just Iike Seth was doing. The paintballs were flying from one side of the field to the other, each player trying to stay hidden but also fire their opponent. Seth nailed Sophia in the center of the goggles on her helmet. Clean shot to the face and the green paint covered her mask—ou t of the game she went. It was down to Seth and Zane, the youngest members on the field. As soon as Zane came up to get a shot in, Seth nailed him and the game was over.
Seth “sniper wolf” enters the field to meet his team at the starting point

A visitor at the Great Egg Drop enjoyed the Christian message of the event. Florence Flowers said, “Easter is not just about the candy and the eggs… it’s about Jesus Christ. This is a great thing for our community.”
Although the event was called the Great Egg Drop, it was more about the great meaning of Easter than it was about the eggs. It was a day of delivering a lifechanging message. watch

The biggest undertaking for volunteers was the Trail of Miracles. The grandiosity of the forest tour was hardly visible from the field festivities. As the 639 Trail of Miracles visitors crept deep into the woods guided by a Roman soldier, they passed by elaborate backdrops and actors as Bible characters who depicted the miracles of Jesus.

he Saturday before Easter was a bright and sunny day when suddenly it began to rain. Tons of shiny plastic eggs fell from the sky and bounced onto the grassy field at the corner of St. Rd. 39 and Sparkman Rd. in Plant City. his past weekend, on April 23, hundreds of Plant City terrestrial dwellers converged upon the Plant City Airport with their heads turned to the clouds. Up in the sky, there were birds, there were planes...there was no Superman....but, down below, there were classic cars, model RC aircrafts, bi-winged planes, railroad oddities, and festival food. It was Plant City’s first ever annual Planes, Trains, and Automobiles exhibition! The Plant City Chamber of Commerce held this inaugural event to call to mind Plant City’s rich history as a pivotal crossroads of transportation by land, rail, and sky. Of course, many already know that Plant City is the namesake of the prominent railroad developer Henry B. Plant. And, with this city’s main export of the world’s best strawberries, the Plant City Airport, or PCM, was founded in 1948 to transport our berries to every corner of the nation.

So was the atmosphere on the tarmac of PCM, something reminiscent of the golden days of personal transport, with all the local festivities one can expect from the city that loves to entertain. PCM’s runway was overrun with classic hotrods, personal aircraft, local artisan merchandise, and fried-up festival fare in the same vein as Plant City’s famous Strawberry Festival. Dozens of local mechanics and car collectors brought their hotrods to show off at the event like Goodguys Garage owner Bill Goodwell. He stood proudly against his restored1938 cherry red Chevy two-door coupe and was willing to allow passers-by the opportunity to behold magnificenceon-wheels. Goodwell’s hobby is to hunt for disused classics, mainly from the ‘40s, and breathe new life into their rusted old frames. He restored his Chevy with a 383 Corvette engine. One little boy asked K-9 unit Officer Staziack if Rugger, a three-year old German Shepard, liked to play Frisbee. “No,” Officer Staziack shook his head regretfully, “he’d probably eat it.” Just beyond in a vacant meadow, RC (remote control) airplane enthusiasts dive-bombed their model planes in and out of view for enthralled spectators. Other attractions included flight simulators, bungee trampoline rides, and super slides to keep everyone’s excitement at full throttle. Proceeds from this largely volunteered exhibition will go towards the Plant City Chamber of Commerce and their many endeavors to improve the city. They plan to make this an annual event. Hangin’ at Truth truth Christian Store Celebrates Local Writers written By: Cheryl Rogers-Turner
S
upport for local talent is one of many unique trademarks at Truth Christian Store in Plant City. The store was delighted to host an author book signing on Saturday, April 16, 2011 for three Florida writers. Two of the three are from right here in Plant City. The other resides two hours from Plant City, in Melbourne, on Florida’s east coast. Ella Rollison Salter was present. A local inspirational poet, she recently released a collection of works entitled Good Morning Lake Jackson! Mrs. Salter’s style reveals the angst of a soul who has experienced much in life. At the same time, it highlights her rock solid faith in God as her protector and provider. She writes straight from her heart, much like King David did in the Psalms. Mrs. Salter’s motto is “I believe in God, who believes in me.” Her message to the community: “Never stop dreaming and believing the Divine Power of God.” Originally from Tallahassee, Mrs. Salter has resided in Plant City for the past 32 years. Dr. Mitch Weissman, pastor of First Baptist Church of Midway in Plant City, autographed copies of his new book, “Secret Weapon: Fasting.” The book was

written to be instructional to Christians who have never experienced the power of fasting and prayer in their lives. Dr. Weissman’s passion for his subject matter compels the reader to desire a closer relationship with Christ. Born in New York and raised in the faith of the Jewish community, Weissman believed the message of the cross that Jesus Christ was his Messiah (savior) at the age of 23.

Ken Jones, a minister and counselor at Church of Christ in Melbourne, has published two books, Everyday Grace, Living in God’s Word, and his newest release, A Prodigal Return. Both are compilations of his blogs, and are devotional in style. His purpose in writing is to “show God’s love and mercy through revealing the Bible as a friendly, rather than scary, book.” Jones style reveals his transparency, focusing on his deep love for Jesus, the one who came to rescue him from a life of alcoholism and isolation. Truth Christian Store & Event Center, owned by Jennifer and Donny Flagg, with co-owners Irene and Fred Wright, recently celebrated the store’s first anniversary. Featuring free Wi-Fi and tables for customers to sit and read or hang out,

Noting the students’ passion for animals and the effort they are demonstrating toward the cause, Mr. Munkwitz believes that the project will push them towards future service projects in the community.

brought to an event in YBOR City on the following Saturday and presented to the Hillsborough County Animal Services. Teacher Rich Munkwitz is proud of what he’s seen from his students at the Advantage Academy of Hillsborough. “The students have really taken the reigns and are steering this service
project to become a big success,” he told Focus in a written interview. “I was very excited to see the enthusiasm and willingness of the students involved. It definitely puts things into perspective, that students with a voice and a passion can make some noise and work on something that will benefit society. I am very proud of them.”
So what made the students decide to do a service project with animals? Emma Kordek, a 4th grade student at the Academy, explains it succinctly.“When we were asked what type of service project we would be interested in a lot of us wanted to work with animals. Many students have pets that we got from rescues. We really wanted to dedicate our time to these animals that need a home.” This is the first service production put into action by the students at Advantage Academy of Hillsborough. There is already a lot of brainstorming among them, though, for their next ideas. “The students have brainstormed several other projects and concerns that they would like to begin working on shortly to improve and strengthen our school, neighborhood, and global communities,” said Mr. Munkwitz. Advantage Academy students want to share their advantages in meaningful ways. They desire to be differencemakers.

East Hillsborough and Plant City Honors Law Enforcement written by: Bill Davis
The East Hillsborough Law Enforcement Appreciation Association hosted its 49th Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday night, May 10th,at the Florida Strawberry Festival Exhibition Hall. The event was open to officers and their guest representing police agencies providing law enforcement services in Eastern Hillsborough County. Approximately 400 law enforcement officers, guest, business leaders, and elected officials were in attendance for this year’s event. Plant City Mayor Dan Raulerson, Hillsborough County Property Appraiser Rob Turner, Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham, Judge Ashley Moody, Judge Jack Espinosa, Judge Chris Sabella, and Representative Rich Glorioso were just a few of the elected officials in attendance. This annual event was started 49 years ago by Plant City business leaders following the shooting death of Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Sergeant Ben Wilder. On July 21, 1962, local citizens were shocked when Sergeant

Ben Wilder and Deputy Perry Young were shot while investigating a domestic disturbance in rural Plant City. Sergeant Wilder was killed and Deputy Young was seriously injured. Business leaders John Pollock, Wiley Gillespie, Foy Lee, Carl Schumacher and Percy Wheeler Jr., decided to hold an annual appreciation dinner honoring local law enforcement officers. The tradition continues with business leaders contributing the funds needed to pay for this annual event. One of the original business leaders Wiley Gillespie still actively serves on the Board. The event started with the Presentation of Colors by the Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office Honor Guard, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Board Member Jodi Smith. Doctor Michael Lewis, Pastor of Plant City’s First Baptist Church led the invocation immediately followed by Plant City Resident Brett Clancy playing the bagpipes. There was not a dry eye in the house as Brett played Military Taps.
Another somber moment came when East Hillsborough Law Enforcement Appreciation Chairman Bill Davis recognized Plant City Resident Sarah Kocab, who was in attendance for the event. Everyone at the event were very familiar with the fact that Sarah’s late husband Jeffrey was killed on June 29, 2010. He was killed in the line of duty along with fellow Tampa Police Officer David Curtis as they attempted to make an arrest during a traffic stop in the city of Tampa. The group were reminded that Jeffrey had previously won the award of Plant City Officer of the Year at the same event back in 2007. He was a Plant City Police Officer at that time prior to joining the Tampa Police Department. Everyone gave Sarah a standing ovation as Board Member Marsha Passmore provided her with a bouquet of flowers.

lueberry pie, blueberry cheesecake, blueberry shortcake, blueberry smoothies…this is just a sampling of the treats served at the 4th annual Blueberry Festival the last weekend in April when Keel and Curley Winery opened their fields and surrounding area for a fruitful celebration.
This year’s festival featured vendors, a kid zone, local entertainment, and blueberry picking. Some of the vendors included Lawson’s Barbeque, Viktoria Chocolates, AAA, Costco, as well as many others. One vendor even offered a do-it-yourself sand art creation. The kid zone had a bouncy house, a giant blow up slide, an obstacle course and a face painting station. A popular stop for adults was the Keel and Curley wine sampling area where for $5 one could taste and comment on their favorites. It was a real family event. Joe Keel had his mom and dad and aunt and uncle, in addition to many other family members
helping to make this year’s Blueberry Festival a success. “I’m really proud of my nephew Joe,” shared Harvey Curley. “I come down from Michigan to help him out every year.” Harvey helped in passing out buckets to those interested in picking their own blueberries. Parents were thrilled that their children had the chance to pick blueberries themselves. “A real chance to go green,” Harvey shared. He believes there were well over a 1,000 people in the fields picking blueberries on just the first day. Different size blueberry plants were also available for purchase. Many took home a plant and the chance to grow blueberries for themselves.
The 4th Annual Blueberry Festival was a fun-for-all-ages, low cost event and a healthy time outdoors to share a delicious experience. Be sure to watch for information about next year’s. It’s certainly an event worth attending.

Plant City’s Newest Jewel Unveiled Ground Breaking Ceremony Reveals Plans for Multi-Purpose Agriculture Complex Written By: Cheryl Rogers-Turner
M
embers of the Florida Strawberry Festival Building Committee were excited to announce plans for construction of a long awaited agriculture show arena. The complex will consist of three buildings, with the largest of the three to be completed during the next few months. Plans for the Evelyn & Batista Madonia, Sr. Agriculture Show Arena were revealed at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at the Florida Strawberry Festival groundbreaking ceremony. Named after community benefactors Evelyn & Batista Madonia, it is expected the main building will be ready for dedication sometime in the fall of 2011. Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. were not available to attend the groundbreaking ceremony. Mrs. Madonia did send word to the Committee that the couple is looking forward to attending the dedication of the new building this fall. The 33,000 square foot building will serve as an 1,800 seat livestock show arena during the Festival each spring, as

well as be available to rent for concerts and shows during the rest of the calendar year. Estimated cost of construction is nearly $3,600,000 for the arena building, with future plans to include construction of livestock buildings on either side of the main structure. The large expo-type building will sport cathedral seating for 1,800 people with up to 1,200 additional seats available in the floor area for concerts and other events. Strawberry Festival General Manager, Paul Davis, expects this new facility will have a huge impact on the community. “Area youth such as Future Farmers of America, 4-H, and other community agriculture programs will benefit from the new building,” he said. In the past, livestock shows were held in large tents. The 2011 Florida Strawberry Festival boasted a larger tent with better ventilation, yet the multipurpose building, when completed, will be a tremendous improvement. The new building will provide a safer and more comfortable venue for spectators, competitors and animals alike.
Plans for the new complex have been in the works for some time, according to Building Committee Chairman and 2012 President Elect Ron Gainey. Several members of the Building Committee worked for a full year on this project, traveling around the State of Florida and into Georgia to view other facilities and gather ideas for what would work best in the community. All are very proud of the finalized plans and excited to move the Florida Strawberry Festival into the future, beginning with construction of this new complex. “Approximately 30 years ago, the local steer community dreamed of building an expo facility for showing livestock,” noted Gainey. Members of the local Steer Committee were in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony and all
appeared quite pleased to see that dream come to fruition. The Florida Strawberry Festival beginnings go all the way back to 1930 when members of the newly formed Plant City Lions Club thought it beneficial to celebrate the region’s bountiful harvest of strawberries. In 1948, American Legion Post 26 members worked together to get the Festival cranked up again after it had been shut down for six years due to World War II. The upcoming 2012 year will no doubt go down in the annals of Plant City history as the one in which livestock showing beefed up the Florida Strawberry Festival from among the top 50 fairs in the United States to the cream of the crop.

They modeled their “believe in yourself ” message through a personal quotes repertoire recited on cue. Peer Mediators must demonstrate selfconfidence without being arrogant. The young ladies and gentlemen representing Marshall display just the right balance of self-esteem. Sandra Black, former Springhead principal, led an interactive discussion of SMART goals -specific, measurable, attainable, reasonable and timely. Students developed examples during the presentation and were challenged to “own” their goals by writing them down. Alice Loeb, former Elementary Generalist and event emcee, also facilitated an anti-bullying session. Students discovered a practical “What Can You Do” approach and responded to a perception questionnaire about bullying at their individual schools. During lunchtime, attendees enjoyed The Springhead Relay for Life Dance, a conference tradition that benefits Area VI Relay for Life fundraising efforts. If success is measured by smiling faces, active listening, friendly conversation and “See you next year” goodbyes, then the day was everything intended and more. Springhead student Ashley Bhagwandeen told her school’s principal, Ann Rushing, “I LOVE peer mediating. This has been SO much fun!” To learn more about the Area VI commitment to Character Education, contact Annette Kilgore or Julie Otte at Springhead and Burney respectively. Morningstar Ministries Sharing With Others While We May written By: Cheryl Johnston
C
arol Gonzalez has a heart for children and families in need. As a school bus driver in the Plant City area, she sees many needs each weekday morning and afternoon. She has also learned through experience that “Little is much when God is in it” and wealth or means is not required to show love. The only requirements are a willing heart and a desire to put faith into action. So, she and her husband Braulio do what they can, with the help of generous, like-minded friends, to spread a little joy and share a little encouragement through their non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Morningstar Ministries. The team hosted an outreach in February at the corner of Alabama and Maryland streets and another in November in Dover with assistance from the New Beginnings Church of God on Downing Street. Reaching out to help those in need includes serving meals, providing clothing, singing together, praying for one

another, and offering words of spiritual encouragement. While children also enjoy fun activities such as games, face painting, and snow cones, frequently they set the example for adults in demonstrations of their child-like faith.
To get involved with future outreaches, contact Carol and Braulio Gonzalez via phone at 863-738-0010, e-mail to pushafrog77@yahoo.com, or online at Facebook where photos of recent outreaches can be viewed. Donations of food, clothing, warm jackets for children, and money are always welcome.
The couple attends Abundant Life Church of God in Lakeland where they live. Their pastor encourages members to “take it (faith) outside the four walls.” So, they do. Along with friends Wayne and Evelyn Evans, who also help fund the work, this faith is often demonstrated by feeding the homeless on a consistent basis from a vehicle equipped with kitchen equipment and a fold-out stage. Others from Mission Florida regularly help with dramas, music, and children’s activities. Outreaches usually involve from 15 to 40 helpers, including musicians, speakers, and translators. Worship teams from local churches often help with music and the crowd always seems to enjoy singing along. Because an opportunity for the guests to receive prayer and/or to accept Christ

On April 16, 2011, friends and family celebrated “What Will Your Choice Be?” as the theme for the group’s 13th Annual Table Talk. The first one for this church was created by Ilene Sears, who now organizes one each year for the Plant City Church of God. Women of the church pick a theme, decorate a table and invite other women to join them for a night of good food, fun, and fellowship.
After singing and blessing the meal, the men of the church served the meal, which adds even more blessings of this event. The dinner prepared by several volunteers included salad, pork roast, mashed potatoes, green beans, and rolls. Each table hostess supplied the dessert for her guests.

Another treat for the ladies was the door prizes donated by Avon, Oasis Car Wash, J & G Jewelers, and many others.
After the encouraging message, the enjoyable evening closed with prayer, hugs all around, and plans in the works for the 2012 event.

Coronet Phosphate Company Triumph, Challenge, Demise A submitted By: Plant City Photo Archives & History Center
In 1919, after the war, Coronet Phosphate Company lowered its surplus inventory by resuming shipments to Europe and continued to improve techniques that added to its earnings. The flotation technique, whereby phosphate could be recovered from even deeper reaches, is chief among these technological advances. During the 1920s and 30s, the company used up its original Plant City excavation grounds and subsequently moved its operations to the Hopewell locality. When World War II ignited, Coronet Phosphate Company took on a new role that kept it running. This new role consisted of supplying U.S. feed manufactures a substitute for Europeanimported phosphorous feed supplements (steamed bonemeal) that were scarce because of the fighting in Europe. In the 1940s, through a lot of research and development, Coronet was able to create a defluorinated feed supplement. Known as Coronet Defluorinated Phosphate (CDP), the product continued to be in great demand many years Early mining operations were extremely after WWII. Furthermore, Coronet was able labor-intensive for Coronet Phosphate Company. Phosphate was originally extracted to retrieve fluorine from its Defluorinated Phosphate and transform the substance into with hand tools, later being removed by potassium fluoroborate, also known as, KBF dredging machines. The mining recreational facilities, including a community company’s shipments throughout the U.S. club house, a swimming pool, and a sports market were not enough to prevent Coronet field which were exclusively accessible to the from stopping operations less than two white workers. Accompanying the farming enterprises was Coronet Phosphate Company, which played a large part in the pre-World War I boom experienced in Plant City due to the agricultural community’s demand for phosphate fertilizer. Incorporated in 1906, Coronet Phosphate Company would start mining operations in 1908 under the direction of C.A. Cowles and George L. Galbraith, president and vice president/treasurer, respectively. During its nearly century-long existence, the mining corporation experienced great achievements and difficulties; however, unfavorable market circumstances coupled with its own highlypublicized pollution issues led to its demise in 2004.
conservation project for the encompassing territory. Fast forward to the early 2000s, the situation at Coronet, now known as Coronet Industries, Inc., became bleak. In 2004, under the command of David Denner as CEO, Coronet announced that it was closing its phosphate plant. The official decision to wind down was attributed to the changing market conditions which practically made Coronet’s business model unprofitable. For example, The Ledger of Lakeland reported that “CEO David Denner blamed the rising costs of energy and raw materials for the decision to shutter the 98-year-old plant…”. However, the company’s environmental problems, specifically accusations that it contaminated air, soil, and groundwater around its property, certainly didn’t help Coronet’s predicament. During the shutdown process, Coronet would have to face lawsuits such as one brought up by “nearly 700 residents and employees who have lived near or worked for Coronet Industries” (Fluoride Action Network, 2004). In 2007, a public health assessment put together by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, a sub-agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, was released to inform the public about environmental data findings around the Coronet site since 2003 and if exposure to any of the present chemicals there could cause illnesses including cancer. The assessment concluded that: “Based on the available environmental data reviewed for this and previous reports, the area around
the Coronet site is currently ‘no apparent public health hazard.’ Levels of contaminants measured in urine of nearby residents, private drinking water wells, off-site surface soil, fish, and outdoor air are not likely to cause illness. The number of cancer cases reported in the Plant City area between 1990 and 2000 are not unusual. Although most of the metals in wastewater discharged to English Creek are not well absorbed across the skin, too little is known to quantify the health risk. If use of the Coronet site changes from industrial to commercial or residential, onsite environmental data should be reviewed to determine the health threat for site users” (U.S., p. 16, 2007). It is worth mentioning that the report found “environmental test data are insufficient to determine the public health risk from exposures before 2003”. In the end, the site was decommissioned, the plant’s structures were demolished, and Coronet aimed its attention toward working with different governmental regulatory agencies to test the water quality in its surroundings. Coronet Phosphate Company will be remembered in the Plant City community for its impact on economic development and industry innovation, as well as its pollution concerns. Over the years, hundreds of Plant City area residents worked and socialized at Coronet, and memories and stories persist. Sources: Coronet: A Personal Reminiscence, Wallace W. Bringing Life to the World HealthPoint Medical Group Interview by Brian West • Photos by Tim Bedgood
S
outh Florida Baptist Hospital has two new great physicians on staff working together to provide care for women. Dr. Francine McCain and Dr. Alyssa Ta, both with HealthPoint Medical Group, have many years of experience is obstetrics. I recently had an opportunity to learn a little about them and their practice. Focus: Where are you from originally? Dr. McCain: I was born in Jamaica and was 3 or 4 years old when my family moved to the United States. I think we lived in New York for a while, but I’m not sure about that. We lived in Mississippi from the time I was 4 years old, until I was six. Then we moved to Indiana and Texas. Dr. Ta: I was born in Saigon, South Vietnam. My family came here when I was four years old, just as the war was ending. We came here by boat. We were refugees for a little while and were picked up by a US Aircraft Carrier and they took us to the Philippines where we stayed for a few months until we were able to go to the United States. Then we went to Pennsylvania and stayed in a refugee camp. We got a host family and they got us situated in the United States. Focus: Do you have any brothers or sisters? Dr. McCain: Yes, I have two brothers and two sisters. Dr. Ta: Yes, I have two younger brothers. Focus: Tell me a little about your parents. Dr. McCain: Well, my father passed away in 2006. He was an electrical engineer. He worked mostly in power plants. My mother lives in Orlando and works as an LPN in a Nursing Home. Dr. Ta: My father was a mechanical engineer in Vietnam. He worked on ships then. After we moved to the U.S., he worked as a draftsman for a large company. While he was working, he went to night school at Penn State and earned his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering. He climbed the ranks and did pretty well for himself. Then when my father finished school, it was my mother’s turn and she went back to school. She was a pharmacist back in Vietnam, but they didn’t recognize her Pharmacy degree here, so she went back to school and got her degree. They both worked very hard to put
my two brothers and me through college. They are now retired and live in the Bradenton area. Focus: Tell me about your immediate family. Dr. McCain: I’m married, and we’ve been married almost 10 years. My husband’s name is Edward McCain. I have a six-year-old daughter and a fouryear-old son. Dr: Ta: I live with my significant other, Michael Bruno, and we have a dog. Focus: What got you interested in medicine? Dr. McCain: For some reason I was always interested in it. I think my mom kinda told me I should be interested in it. She was probably whispering it in my ear at night, or something. As I went through school, I was really interested in anatomy. Then as I progressed on, I learned what it was like going into medicine, and through college I volunteered in hospitals and went into surgeries and just got more exposure to it all, so I just got more interested in medicine. Dr. Ta: On my mother’s side of the family, she has seven brothers and sisters. Four are doctors and three are dentists and she’s a pharmacists. I spent a lot of time with my aunts, so I grew up around medicine and it was just something I wanted to do. My grandmother’s father was a dentist and my grandfather was the physician to the last emperor of Vietnam. He was the royal physician. Focus: Where did you go to school? Dr. McCain: I went to Duke University for my undergrad and to the University of South Florida for medical school. Dr. Ta: I went to Bryn Mawr College. It’s one of the Seven Sisters schools. Dr. Ta: Well, there are many reasons. I had a great experience during my rotation with OBGYN. I liked it because it enables you to combine both medicine and surgery. You have to know a lot about primary care and medicine. There’s surgery involved as well, with all sorts of pelvic surgery and cesarean sections. We do screening exams and procedures that would typically be handled in the office, such as treatment of cervical dysplasia. We perform surgeries in the hospital and minimally invasive procedures such as the Essure procedure, where we can do female sterilization without any incisions. This procedure has
Focus: What do you think sets your practice apart from others? Dr. McCain: We’re one of the few allfemale groups in the Tampa Bay area, and in the immediate area, we’re the only allfemale group. My point is: our patients are only going to be female anyway, and that in itself is a big advantage. Also, the fact that there’s just the two of us, you get a more personalized experience. Dr. Ta: I think we offer a personal touch. We can relate as women to our patients. We’re a small group so our patients don’t have to see a different doctor each time
they come. We deliver at South Florida Baptist Hospital and that’s the only hospital we’re affiliated with. So our patients won’t have to travel far away for surgery or to deliver. Focus: Tell me something memorable about your experiences as a doctor that has stuck with you over the years. Dr. McCain: In residency, we’d have to staff the GYN ER, and the lady would come in quite frequently and she always thought she was pregnant. We’d always have to tell her that she wasn’t pregnant. She came in once and said, “I know I’m pregnant, I just know I am.” The resident on staff said, “Well I don’t think you’re pregnant.” He did the pregnancy test and she actually tested positive. So he did an ultrasound and she was pregnant with spontaneous triplets. She wouldn’t come back to our clinic as we’d tell her to do, but she’d come back to the ER and thought that I was her doctor. It taught me that you just have to listen to your patients. Dr. Ta: I’ve delivered lots of children, somewhere around 1500, but the thing that sticks out for me most in my experience is the way patients are able to find me. It’s humbling. Patients are looking online trying to find me because they knew me from Tampa. I also get a lot of referrals by the hospital staff. It’s very touching and rewarding that those patients and colleagues hold you in that regard. Dr. McCain and Dr. Ta both enjoy working in our community and love their work. They’ve established some great relationships both with other doctors and with their patients. Thanks for all your work, and we wish you much success.

One Pharmacy Matching All Others’ Discounts Plant City Discount Pharmacy Wouldn’t be nice if you didn’t have to run to one pharmacy for the free antibiotics, another for the $3.99 medications, and to a whole other town to get that last prescription that nobody seems to carry? Plant City Discount Pharmacy can meet all your needs.
Owner and pharmacist, Meena Kukreja, worked for CVS for 10 years. She was always discouraged because she couldn’t do everything for everyone. Some people couldn’t afford their medications and some medications would be unavailable. “I felt like my hands were tied.” The last straw was when a patient she had formed a friendship with ended up in the hospital after a bad reaction to two different medications from two different pharmacies because of the deals.
When patients go from one pharmacy to another, they don’t think to tell the pharmacist about all the other medications they are taking, and the pharmacist doesn’t always have the time to ask. For example, antibiotics interfere with cholesterol medicine and even elevates the cholesterol levels. If you get your antibiotics for free at one pharmacy and your cholesterol medications for $3.99 at another, neither pharmacist knows the background of the patient, which can cause problems.

y husband has always enjoyed preparing and serving food to our friends and family. When we married in 1987 he would fix huge amounts of food and I would ask,” Why, when it’s just we two?” He’d say, “Well, I thought we might call some people over who might enjoy eating this.” It didn’t matter whether it was a neighbor he barely knew or family. So when he called me in 1993 and said he wanted to open a sandwich shop, I wasn’t totally surprised, but knowing our financial situation I wondered how that could happen. He assured me that if it was the Lord’s will, then it’s the Lord’s bill and He will take care of it. He was definitely right. One miracle after another happened and the next thing I knew, we were open for business. When our children were small, Troy’s parents were a true blessing. They helped us a lot, caring for the children or working many hours right along with us. Eventually, my mom started working for us, too. Now I am a stay-at-home mom who handles all the business paperwork.

We have really become bonded to the people we see on a regular basis. Our customers become our friends and we’ve been privileged at times to pray for their needs. That alone makes owning Strawberry Hut worth it. This July will be our 18th year in business. From no employees to 11, we’ve grown

steadily and hope to expand our building soon. We truly thank God and greatly appreciate the loyal customers who have supported us all these years. Thank you for selecting us for “Best Cuban” award in 2008, 2009 and now 2010 Focus Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards. It’s very humbling to be honored by our customers in this way. We sincerely appreciate our employees, along with Manager Jill Thorpe, Assistant Manager Doug Harris and recently retired former manager, Julie Harris. We are pleased to have two of our children Michael (17) and Lauren (15) as part of the crew, part-time while they finish school and pursue interests in music ministry. The Christian band they formed called C.O.R.E. (Christians Out Reaching Everyone) is scheduled to sing and play in Dallas, Texas in June for a National Christian Talent Expo. Our inspiration has always been Jesus! Our life has always been about what God wants for us. Some think that business growth equals success. To a degree that may be true, but, to me success started the day I accepted Jesus as my personal Savior. When you concentrate on material things, those will be your only reward, but when you learn to put God first and let everything fall into place you will see the Hand of God move in your life in ways you could never have dreamed or imagined.

IT’S ALWAYS FLEA SEASON IN FLORIDA! Anyone who has ever battled fleas knows how difficult they are to eradicate. Once a home becomes infested, control can be difficult, time-consuming and expensive. A flea-infested dog or cat can introduce hundreds of new flea eggs into the home each day.
Here are a few helpful hints: *Use a flea product all year round as directed by your veterinarian.
*Treat all animals in the household, whether they live indoors or out. *Treat your yard and the inside of your house.

Ali Hasbini Sunrise Homes How did you get into this business?
I am an alumnus of the University of South Florida’s Schools of Accountancy and Business, and after earning my degrees, I taught there. While teaching, I had the opportunity to do some consulting work, and one of my assignments was with a small builder/developer. I was fascinated by the business. It offered the challenges and opportunities that apparently I needed. That was 27 years ago. That builder/developer became Sunrise Homes.
What are your aspirations?
My highest aspiration is to be the very best father and husband I can be. But as to business, this is paramount: we must conduct ourselves in such a way that everyone Sunrise Homes does business with recognizes us as an excellent partner in every way. This includes our customers, of course, and real estate professionals, vendors, trades and regulators.
What inspires you?
Success inspires me. No matter what we do, we have to succeed. I’m also inspired by the creative part of building and
developing. In many fields, people talk figuratively of “building” a legacy. We’re literally doing it, and that inspires me.
What are your greatest successes?
My greatest success lies in the homes and communities we’ve built for thousands of families. I can say that those homes are something I and those families can be proud of. And for 27 years we’ve provided a good living for not only our employees’ families, but to countless others who have been dedicated trade partners and vendors through the years.

What do you have planned for your future?
For the immediate future, our plan can only be to preserve what we’ve built over the years. The last few years have brought unprecedented challenges to my industry, and many good and respected competitors have not survived. We are positioned to survive these challenges, and to expand and prosper as market conditions allow. We’re not going anywhere.

THE LAWS OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND SAY PRICES MUST GO UP! Here is your one minute lesson in supply and demand: When the supply of homes available for sale goes down, prices must go up! Ok, so there are other factors involved...but all other things being equal...with fewer homes on the market available to buy.....those fewer sellers can demand more money for their home. According to the Greater Tampa Association of Realtors (GTAR), the current inventory of single family homes is at the lowest point in many years. So what does that mean to you? Maybe it is time to think about selling your home! GTAR is also reporting that the average selling price for a single family home has increased every month since the beginning of the year. So far, the statistics suggest that the market is starting to turn around! Thinking about buying or selling? Would you like more information about what your home may be worth in today’s market? Walden lake T
he Walden Lake Community Association Board meetings, open to all residents, are held the third Monday of each month at 6:00 PM at the Walden Lake HOA office building on Griffin Boulevard in Walden Lake. The next meeting will be May 16th.
An unusual wind blew through Walden Lake on March 31st in the form of a tornado damaging homes and uprooting 60-70 trees, making the paths and parks unusable for a couple of weeks. As long as there were power saws and men working, it was too dangerous and time consuming to have residents walking the paths. Given the amount of damage, the Association did a great job clearing the trees in the paths and medians. Clean up is still continuing, so please be careful as there may still be equipment on the path. Trees are being replaced and you can donate a memorial tree if you would like. Contact Bette at the office for more details. The Board asks that bicycle riders be careful of walkers in the paths and be sure that as you approach a walker you make your presence known. The Board also reminds residents that golf carts are illegal and dangerous for children to be driving. At the annual meeting held in April, two new board members were elected: Heather Updike of Clubhouse Woods and Steve Swantek of Sutton Woods. Glenn Allen has retired from the HOA Board and was presented with a plaque for his 9 years of service to the community. He was an active and vibrant member of the Board and will be missed.
review submitted by: naTalie sweeT
Elected as officers of the Board at the April 18th meeting were Jan Griffin as President, Marcus Alexich as Vice President, Karen Olson as Treasurer and Jim Chancey as Secretary. Currently 112 residences are at the collection attorney for nonpayment of dues, which accounts for approximately 13% of the total HOA budget. An increasing number of residents are parking their commercial vehicles on the streets, driveways and yards. This presents a problem especially for Emergency vehicles in addition to being an eyesore for the community. Most of the neighborhood associations have rules on commercial vehicles as well as on street parking of any vehicle. Please check your deed restrictions to determine if you are in violation.
Brittany,
We are so proud of all your accomplishments! We couldn’t ask for a more talented daughter and know that your leadership skills will take you far. Happy 18th Birthday and Good Luck at State Convention! Love Ya, Dad, Mom and Jesse
Bette is maintaining the Walden Lake website and is urging everyone to log on and register so you can get important messages and notices from the association. If you have lost your registration key or are having trouble logging on, contact Bette at the HOA office, 813-754-8999 or via email at betteg@waldenlake.org and she will help you through the process. The website address is www.waldenlake.org. Registered residents receive monthly crime reports and any emergency alerts, as well as access to their individual neighborhood’s information submitted by the HOA Board.

USDA Loans Zero down payment and no monthly mortgage insurance submitted By: nate davis
T
he USDA loan is a popular home program amongst home buyers. This government loan program allows homebuyers to purchase a home with a zero down payment and allows the financing of closing costs in addition to the purchase price as long as the home appraises for the loan amount. This is another one of those “sounds too good to be true” or “so what is the catch” type of programs, however I can assure you that this is a very real and popular loan program. Oh by the way, rates are typically in the 4-5% range currently. Credit score only needs to be a 640 as well. The limitation of this loan product is that the home must be located in a rural area, and that there are maximum household income limitations

with some exceptions. You do not have to be poverty level either, like some programs seem to require. A family of 1-4 can earn a combined household income of up to a little over $70,000 and still be eligible. So in short, you can buy a home with zero down, finance the closing costs, get a great 30-year fixed rate without a prepayment penalty and NO MONTHLY MORTGAGE INSURANCE for many homes in the Plant City Area. Think Trapnell, Cork, Knight Griffin, Lithia, Dover, Polk County Areas, etc. when determining what an eligible area is….. A link at www.PlantCityMortgages.com under the USDA section allows visitors to plug in addresses to determine whether a property is eligible.

he first 4 months of the year in Real Estate have set the pace for what many believe is a positive sign for the rest of 2011. Recent data shows year-over-year improvement in key areas such as number of sales and number of contracts pended. The other key piece of information that many experts consider is the months of inventory. Simply put, that data reveals how long it would take to sell what is still active on the market…if nothing new was listed. For Plant City, and most of Hillsborough County, that number is just over 6 months, which is nearly what we call a “market in equilibrium”. This is in part due to the foreclosure market stalling in the past several months, with major institutions still holding on to these files. Those in the REO (Real Estate Owned)/ Foreclosure market know that it is inevitable and just a matter of time before these properties become active listings. At one time we had an inventory of well over a 15-month supply. What many are experiencing now, including buyers, sellers, and agents, is that when a home is priced competitively in the market, it is selling quickly and many times with multiple offers being submitted. Frankly, many sellers have had
their home listed on the market and have seen other homes around them list and then sell, while they are still waiting for a buyer to come along and make an offer. If you have had your home on the market for more than 60 days, and you have not had showings or offers, then the market has rejected your price(!). Yes, it is still a buyer’s market. For buyers, however, this is not the time to sit on the fence. They already know that it is becoming more and more difficult to find the right home (back to the inventory issue). They also (should) know that mortgage rates are going up, so the difference in rate will more than negate what they save on price. At a glance here in Plant City, I pulled some interesting information for the month of April. Of the 526 active/ pending/sold properties, 89.3% were priced below $250,000. Also 51% of the 526 are either REO or Short Sale properties. Of the 79 homes sold in the month of April, 38% were REO/Short Sales. There were 95 REO properties but only 30% still active at the end of the month. Bottom line, the pressure to position and price competitively still remains; and who the seller is makes no difference.

High School Hockey Again! Durant Cougars are Awarded a Team W article By: Joe Bowles
hen the National Hockey League gave the Tampa Bay Area a franchise and the Tampa Bay Lighting came to town, with them came a brand new sport that seemed out of place. In Florida, we are used to sand, not ice. But, with a new game in town, a virgin fan base developed. People who never played the game and weren’t familiar with the rules began watching and real fans were born. Some were adults who liked the physical aspect, others were enamored with the speed, but some of the new fans were kids who wanted to play hockey themselves. The question was where and with whom? That is when teams started to form in this area. The sport was recognized by the Florida High School Athletic Association and districts and leagues were created. In 2002, Durant High School put together a hockey team of players that not only competed but that were recognized as

sight, the process of forming a team began.
Melanie contacted the administration at Durant and received permission to play under the Durant name and logo. Next, she got in touch with the FHSAA and received their approval along with a nod from the Florida Hockey Association. The Shortly after their national recognition, the process was moving along. There was just a slight problem. Durant did not have the team disbanded, largely due to the lack of participation. That’s when Melanie Redden required number of students (14) to field a hockey team under FHSAA guidelines. got involved. The Cougars began practicing for the spring season a few weeks ago and they have already played their first match. “We have a spring season,” said Melanie, “that serves as an instructional time, and our fall season is the one that counts against our record. In our first game, we didn’t fare so well, but it was our very first time playing together. Right now, we are working on being a team. We have a lot of talent and our roster is up to 22 players. Most of them have been playing hockey for years.” The Cougars roster is full for the spring, but the roster will be open again in the fall. A tryout will be held in August for anyone that may be interested. Max Girling A s far back as Max Girling can remember, tennis has been a part of his life.
“As a family, we went to all of my older brother’s matches. I guess it was his influence that got me started. I would watch him play and then I got interested in playing myself.” And at the age of nine, Max, the son of Martin and Sue, took his young game to his first tournament and he has been competing ever since. Over the last few years, he has supplied stability and consistency to the Plant City High School Raiders’ tennis team, a team that has just completed its most successful season in years as they made it to the semifinals of regional competition before losing to their nemesis Sarasota Riverview.

”
Girling, like his brother Martin, has been a four-year letterman for the Raiders, compiling an impressive record while going undefeated as a freshman and a senior. In his first high school season, Girling played at #5 and went 11-0 in the regular season before suffering his first defeat in his district match. As a sophomore he was 8-3 at #3, and he equaled that his junior year with another 8-3 mark. Girling was looking forward to his final year, when an accident altered his senior season

“We were playing basketball, and I fell. Somebody stepped on my hand and a bone just snapped in half.”
The doctor repaired the bone by surgically inserting a pin, but Max was not able to get back on the court for more than a month. Even when he competed, the vibration in his hand was unnerving. In his first match following surgery, Girling battled a King High School Lion for nearly three hours in a three-set match that Girling finally won. It served as a confidence builder that propelled him to another undefeated season. He finished the year with a 6-0 record. Unfortunately, Girling did not compete in the required number of matches that would have qualified him for district competition and he had to watch his teammates pick up a second place finish at the district tournament. “Yeah, I was pretty bummed out about it,” said Girling. “I needed one more match to qualify for districts, and the Friday before the district tournament our match was rained out and there wasn’t enough time to reschedule. It felt pretty bad because this is the first time we went to the regionals and I wasn’t able to play.” In spite of not being able to put in a full season, Girling says that Raiders’ coach Dale Rice is trying to help him with the right college decision where tennis can still a part of his plans. The future, however, is still open. He hopes to play tennis in college where he can also study criminal justice. He is undecided about where, but if given a choice, he would like to attend either Florida Atlantic University or the University of Central Florida. This year, Girling has volunteered in the Best Buddies program and has served as the president of the Tennis Anyone? Club. He also sports a GPA of 4.30 with a resume that includes induction into the National Honor Society and membership in the Civitan Club, where he serves as secretary.

Omar Molina had a solid senior season. He along with Bobby Mondoux provided clutch hits especially in the second half of the year. Kent Humphrey was a pleasant surprise at third base as he developed into a strong role player. Cody Smith maxed out his abilities behind the plate, and sophomore Nick Rodriguez showed steady improvement all year long. Offensively, this year’s squad ended up with the highest team batting average on record (.321) to go along with the best team ERA on record (2.23) and the highest fielding percentage recorded (.956). Baseball Team of the month 2011 Plant City High School Raiders L ast year, after completing the most successful season in Raiders’ baseball history, head baseball coach Mark Persails didn’t know what to expect entering the 2011 season. You see, last year’s squad ended with an 18-9 record, a second place finish in District 5A-8, a runner-up finish in the district tournament, and an advance to the regional semifinals. Seven members made all-star teams, five seniors were awarded scholarships and thirteen members of the 2010 team were seniors that provided much needed leadership. The 2011 Raiders had very little
experience entering this season, and most thought they would linger around the .500 mark.
“I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew that we would have to win our games a different way this year than last,” said Persails. “Last year, we knew we could put runs on the board and outscore our opponents. But this year was different. I knew that pitching would be our strong point. I knew that we would have to manufacture runs and I knew that we’d be able to handle our opponents if we pitched well.” That is exactly what the Raiders did and
the result was the best regular season record (16-6) and the best overall record (16-7) in school history as the Raiders claimed their first-ever regular season district championship. “Our pitching was strong. I thought Brett (Nizamoff ), Evan (Bowles), T.J. (Peterson), and Keven (Long) pitched outstanding all year. They kept up in every game,” remarked Persails. What Persails didn’t expect, was the offense the Raiders produced. Matt Singletary was arguably the best player in the district this year. He batted over .500 with power at the plate and speed on the
Plant City finished with a 10-2 district record to claim the regular season title. Unfortunately, they stumbled in the district tournament. Carrying the #1 seed into the tournament, the Raiders were awarded a first round bye. In the second round, Plant City lost to a Riverview team 3-0 that may have played one of the best games of any team in the district all season. Riverview then went on to defeat a strong Durant squad in the championship game. Both schools advanced to regional play, while the Raiders were sent home. “Last year’s squad set the stage for this year,” said Persails. “They changed the attitude about Raiders’ baseball. This year’s team saw what could be done from observing last year’s team. I think our boys this year did a lot of things well. They believed they would win every game. They went on the field expecting to win.” The Raiders did just that… better than any team before them. Maybe, what they learned from last year’s team is that they can “pay it forward” to next year’s squad as well.

extrA » Al reuCHel me a bit that even more of our money will be headed to the Big Apple. Still, trains are used there every day. They have the tracks, the population, the work centers, and the experience to take advantage of moving lots of folks. Heck, if you live there you don’t have much other choice. About 800-million dollars will be used to upgrade trains’ speeds from 135 mph to 160 mph. The projects should also improve the reliability of the Long Island Rail Road and improve a traffic jam for Amtrak’s central New York routes. The same goes for California where planners have already designed a train that could travel 200 mph between San Francisco and Los Angeles. That’s one busy line that could help ease the burden on California’s disastrous highway system. Another 400-million will be used to upgrade existing train routes from St. Louis to Chicago to Detroit. And yes, those routes do carry a lot of people on existing lines, so there is a demand especially if the manufacturing sectors ever spring back to life.

love trains. If we had gotten high-speed rail to Orlando, I would have been one of the first to jump on board. If we get light rail I’m one of those guys who would probably go out of my way to hitch a ride. Of course, I live in Pinellas so that’s not going to happen.

Just for kicks, let’s drop the politics of high speed for argument’s sake. Our governor turned it down. So now 2-billion dollars is heading to New York, Wisconsin, California, and Illinois. And here’s the tough part to admit… the money is probably better placed in those areas than
here in Florida. Did I say that? It’s not just my opinion but the thoughts of a lot of transportation think tanks. It’s not that we can’t use the jobs in Florida, far from it. Our problem is that we don’t have a long established history of folks using the trains to get around. We don’t have a track record that says people would use the trains if they were built. And in order for trains to pay for themselves in Florida, we would have to make the eventual links to Miami, and yes, Pinellas County and the beaches. And where was the money going to come from? Enter New York into the mix. It does gall
In making the announcement, Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood touted the number of jobs that would be created and how much time would be saved. He also noted that American companies would begin making the next generation rail cars and other technology improvements as a result of the government investment in rail. On that point you can’t argue that highspeed rail could have been a potential economic engine for Florida. Here’s the rub though. If all high speed could do was create jobs and not carry enough passengers to pay the bills, it could have become an albatross. Potential rider surveys were pathetic at best. As proposed, the rail in Florida would have only had three stops: Tampa, Lakeland, and Orlando. We don’t have major industrials loops that could have immediately tied into the rail. We don’t have riders who already jump on board and could benefit from faster commute times. New York and California and Boston and DC already do. So take my money… I don’t want you to choke on it. But the next time we ask for your help developing a catastrophic hurricane fund, remember this gift we gave back to you in the name of railroad common sense.

Even when they were 16, 17, 18 years old; especially when they were 16, 17, 18 years old.” • “It sounds corny, but GO TO CHURCH. The decision to worship with our faith community - every week - as a family commitment, faithfully, even when we didn’t really feel like it, was one of the best decisions we have ever made.” • “Never give up. Hold the course. Always believe.” A common thread in all the encouragement boiled down to two words. The first word was “decision”. We’re grown-ups now, and most of what works for us - especially as parents - has to be conceived and implemented in the decision realm. In other words, just do it.
From “Parents of Teens” to “One Foot In” and beyond it’s a short trip! L
The other word is “faith”. Not just having faith but being faithful. Hmmm, another decision-oriented concept, how about that?

ast Sunday evening at church, my POGs small group met in joint session with the POTs group that shares our 5:30-7:30 time slot. POTs - in explanation for those who aren’t good with acronyms - stands for “Parents of Teens.” My wife, Rebekah, and I started POTs as a support and encouragement group when we first moved to the area over 14 years ago. The point of POTs was to guard our mutual sanity. We shared our stories, prayed together, and held one another accountable as we negotiated the long decade of teen-dom. We met at one end of the church while the youth met at the other. Eventually we noticed that our teens had become young-adults. So we trained new leaders for the POTs group and started POGs (Parents of Grads). Before long we’ll be running a dynamic OFI ministry

looked around the room I realized how much we had all been through together, and how overwhelming the task of raising a family seems at times.
Back to Sunday. Anyway, the reason we met as a combined group last weekend was fourfold: 1. To help the current crop of POTs realize they are not alone.
As the clock started to run down I threw out one final question. What - for you as a parent - is indispensable? Here are just a few of the responses:
2. To share some of our own stories of hope and redemption from recent history. 3. To field a few questions and concerns. 4. To reassure the younger parents that we all struggle, constantly, and that the point of faith is not a free pass from trouble, but the presence of God on the journey. Our time passed quickly - it always does, because there is so much to share. There were 30 of us in a big circle, and as I

iCe CreamyouissAy wHen yogurt tAstes oBsolete!better, And is HeAltHier w written by: joHn ross
e at FOCUS took a trip to the Walden Woods plaza in Plant City to check out the new You Say When Yogurt shop. From the glass wall looking inside, the vibrant cream colors catch one’s attention. With its orange leather couches, wicker rocking chairs, and a big TV with channel turned to comedy, we were ready to eat our yogurt in style. The appearance is only part of the deal, though; going for the first time is a fun learning experience. Jennifer Ingram, owner, explained: “When you walk in, our employees behave as tour guides,” she said. Jennifer says the shop is a new concept in frozen dessert shops in that it serves yogurt instead of ice cream, it is self serve, and the yogurt is sold by weight. After an explanation, customers are shown the yogurt wall - a glass bead ornamental station with indented dispensers with large descriptions of the flavors above. Operation of the dispensers is simple and customers are given a sample of some of the month’s eight different flavors.

After tasting a few free samples and then loading up on their favorite flavors, customers are guided to the topping bar. Here’s where the eyes light up - Gummy Worms, M&M’s, Oreo cookie crumbles and a lot more (Reese’s Pieces, nut pieces, mango flavored juice balls, brownie bites, cookie dough chunks- Cap’n Crunch Cereal! etc.). There are three flavors of Hershey’s syrup, and a variety of fresh cut fruit. “We get the best, freshest, most
mature fruit we can get,” said Jennifer. There are kiwi and strawberry slices, blueberries, and more.
The first thing that came to mind when we tried the yogurt was how precise the flavor descriptions were. I filled my cup with a swirl of the Hershey’s Kisses flavor. I took a bite, and it struck me that it tasted so much as described that it was if they took Hershey Kisses, melted them, added ice, and blended it. It was delicious. The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup tasted just as reminiscent and moved over the palate like a lighter, colder version of our favorite candy. For fruit lovers, the Pomegranate is tart and light. The strawberry, when mixed with real strawberries from the bar, was strawberry overload. The most popular flavor, by far, is the Cake Batter, which, you guess right, tastes like cold cake batter made into yogurt, and is sweet like a vanilla wafer. Jennifer’s favorite flavor, she said, is the Country Vanilla. “It tastes like somebody’s been churning it all day in an ice cream maker,” she said. Other flavors for this month include Peach Mango Tart and Cookies-N-Cream. More flavors will be introduced, especially during the holidays, with flavors like Pumpkin Pie and Red Velvet Cake. It all costs $.49 an ounce, including the weight of the yogurt, toppings, and syrups.
The healthiness factor of the yogurt is a big draw to customers. Jennifer says that a woman who visits every single day is happy to report she’s dropped a pant size in the

In addition to having virtually no fat and few calories (the strawberry flavor has only 15 calories per ounce), the yogurt contains three active cultures known to support digestive health: s. thermophilus l. bulgaricus, and l. Acidophilus. An average 8 ounce serving of the yogurt contains between 8 and 10 grams of protein, and up to 35 percent of the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of calcium. “It’s a low-cal meal replacement,” Jennifer said. That’s pretty healthy for how good the product tastes. In addition to yogurt, You Say When Yogurt serves smoothies - milkshakes made primarily with yogurt. Customers can add anything from the toppings bar into their drink and an employee will blend it. Protein powder is available for people looking to enjoy a healthy postworkout shake. Despite opening only a month ago, Jennifer and company have had great success and she is grateful to the shop’s reception and for those who have worked so hard to make it successful. Her daughter Jessica “has been a real big part of putting this place together. We couldn’t have done it without her,” she said. The shop is positioned right in the courtyard of the plaza and has free WiFi. Grab your laptop and come out and chill on a sofa or on the patio with the delicious, healthy yogurt at You Say When Yogurt.

Artist Paints In of Giving Back to Those The Spirit Who Sacrifice So Much W written By: Heather Davis
ords cannot begin to describe the immense talent of artist Fred Rothenbush, except to say that he was born to paint. From the time he could remember painting was his life, and as a result Fred’s painting career has been as unique as his talent. Blessed with a natural born talent, Fred felt that anything else besides having the time to just paint got in the way. Fortunately he was encouraged in his art from an early age by both his father and grandfather who were both professional artists. From the time Fred was nine years old he was already exhibiting his artwork in various art shows around the country. At the age of twelve Fred began doing commissioned portraits and by the time he was in ninth grade he was commissioned to paint a portrait of President Kennedy and his family. Since that time Fred has painted five presidents which include Kennedy, Carter, Ford, Nixon, and Reagan, as well as painting various actors, musicians, and professional ball players. Fred was a self taught artist who was privileged to be surrounded by professional artists while growing up. Following in both his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, Fred was always studying art under the arm of an artist.

While still in grade school his talent was recognized as such that he was allowed to leave school one hour early three days a week to study art in high school. Before reaching Junior High, Fred had completed all of the high school level art classes. Fred’s was truly a talent beyond what was standard reaching out into the realm of extraordinary.
had a one man art show at an Art Gallery located on the army base in Fort Bragg. Eight years later a Lieutenant Kernel came into the gallery requesting that the owner help him find someone he could commission to paint a portrait of him tenderly holding his wife in a parting embrace. The owner of the gallery knew without hesitation that Fred Rothenbush was the man for the job and put the two in touch. The rest was history. Fred was able to produce exactly what the Lieutenant has requested. As luck would have it, this specific Lieutenant who served second in command for the Aviation Brigade of Black Hawk, also worked for a time with Fred’s son a bond of appreciation and mutual respect was formed between the two. A short time later, Fred was once again contacted by the Lieutenant who this time was requesting a highly important commission. That of a painting depicting what was a recent aviation mission, the largest of its kind, where a helicopter was lost resulting in the loss of four Black Hawk pilots. Without a moment’s hesitation Fred accepted the commission and poured his heart, soul, and life into this privileged assignment. Paying attention to every detail no matter how small, Fred began the painting first by
requesting numerous aerial photographs of the landscape as well as photographs of the actual helicopters used in the mission. He proceeded to pay such close attention so as to get every small detail, even an area of rust located on a helicopter, exactly as it was. Painting day and night under a tight deadline of two months, Fred continued to work to get the painting perfect. Early each morning at 3am, due to a nine hour time difference, Fred would email the proof of the painting’s progress to the Lieutenant as well as to the other Officers to be reviewed. The actual progression of the painting became an event in these Officer’s lives. After a couple months of solid dedication, Fred’s painting was complete and resulted in a true masterpiece. Meanwhile the Commanders who were part of the mission collaborated together to write a story of the mission to marry together with the painting. Meeting his two month deadline, Fred’s painting of the mission in Afghanistan was unveiled at Fort Bragg, just in time for the return home of the soldiers involved in the assignment. After the unveiling the painting in combination with the written documentation was archived in three different military museums.
As a father and devoted family man, Fred has been able to paint his whole life, in part due to his extreme passion and devotion to the joy of painting and in part due to the support and encouragement from his wife and family to always continue to paint. And this is exactly what Fred has continued to pour his heart and soul into - this life of painting. It is this exact heart and soul that pours forth in everything that Fred touches. Recently he has had the amazing opportunity to touch many lives and to take his painting to a place he never even would have envisioned it may go, across the world to Afghanistan, in honor of those who sacrifice so much. For ten years, Fred’s son served in Fort Bragg as an Officer flying helicopters for an elite military group of pilots known as Black Hawk. During that time Fred
The baseball pitcher was the greatest pitcher West Point has ever had,Steven Reich, and was shot down and killed in Afghanistan. West Point built a new special room at the baseball complex and dedicated it to Steve. His rank was Major. The painting is 30x40 and hangs in front of the entry door. It’s the first thing you see when entering.
entertAinment » Artist of tHe montH Perhaps in all of this the most amazing aspect was Fred’s desire to give all he could back to those who sacrificed so much. Turning aside from the guaranteed generous commission, Fred took a chance and offered to take nothing up front only requesting that his actual printing costs be covered. Wanting to keep the costs low for the soldiers and their families the prints were offered for only fifty dollars a print. In continuing to want to give, Fred offered to divide sales so that he would receive a small portion of the initial sales while giving back over fifty percent of sales back. As a result he was able to donate to the military from sales of his prints over $18,000.00 to be used in dedication and service to the soldiers. Since that time Fred has been commissioned to paint a depiction of two more military missions honoring those who have fought and served. In light of all of this Fred is constantly amazed by the depth of gratitude he receives from those soldiers, officers, and families whose lives he has touched through his pure and honest gift. In Fred’s own words he has had the opportunity in his unique
and wonderful painting career to paint Presidents, Kings and Queens, famous musicians, actors, and athletes, but will choose to work instead with soldiers any day of the week in honor of their sacrifice and deep appreciation. When not being commissioned to paint military missions in Afghanistan, or Presidents for that matter, Fred is happily at home where he has resided for the past thirty-nine years in Ruskin, Florida painting in his studio scenes of Florida wildlife from the waterfront view of his backyard. Fred is living his life by the philosophy he imparted to his kids whereby he stated, “I don’t care if you dig ditches, just dig a good ditch, Go out and do what you love!” To view more of Fred Rothenbush’s artwork you may visit the Art Lounge Gallery in Plant City or view his website at www.fredrothenbush.com.

The jewel of the 1-4 Corridor: The Red Rose Inn N written by: Amanda Molinaro
estled away in the Plant City section of the 1-4 corridor and just a few blocks away from historic downtown Plant City, the Red Rose Inn & Suites is a dining and entertainment experience that will transport you back to a time where Old South style and elegance and 50’s era rock n’ roll collide. Unless you have been living under a rock (or do not get your cable service from Bright House Networks) you may already be familiar with the Red Rose Inn’s homespun commercials featuring the glamorous and fiery owner Evelyn Madonia, touting the inn as “the jewel of the I-4 corridor.” A jewel indeed, it is. Upon simply walking inside the front entrance, the establishment’s interior design will render you breathless. Everything, from the antique furniture and chairs, to the elaborately adorned light fixtures and chandeliers, makes a guest feel like they have been whisked into the movie Gone With the Wind. This Victorian meets Old South Reconstruction Era motif is repeated throughout the Red Rose Inn’s halls to recreate the romantic feel of days long gone by. And, of course staying true to its name, the color red permeates and prevails, painting every surface and guest with the romantic hue of passion.
Those couples looking to rekindle the fire of romance in their relationships should look no farther than the Red Rose Inn’s dining room. The dimly lit room is crowned with a ceiling of fiber optic stars, which in effect makes the silverware and glassware appear to shimmer. The tuxedoed and professional wait staffers, helmed by Maitre D’ David Rodas, are prompt to provide guests with a touch of class and personal attention. The menu, created by executive chef Matteo Casini, offers a wide range of fine dining fare including fresh seafood, steak, veal, and poultry.
The experience does not end with the food. The Red Rose Inn always makes sure to provide their guests with a ‘50s era rock n’ roll and Motown themed night of music and dancing. In the dining room and in the ballroom, musical and entertainment acts like “Mr. Vegas” Bobby Palmero, Bill Haley’s Comets, and PJ Leary’s Las Vegas Sounds will move guests out of their seats and onto the dance floor. Bobby Palmero is an accomplished recording artist and Las Vegas performer with a voice akin to Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow and the performance flare of Liberace. He wows the crowd with an extensive repertoire of rock n’ roll and country songs, even while taking time during his set to mingle with and serenade guests in the crowd. If the night becomes too full with wine, food and fun, the Red
Whether it be for celebrations such as anniversaries, birthday parties, wedding receptions, or just a romantic night on the town with your loved one, the Red Rose Inn staff desires to provide all with a lasting impression.
