Letter From The Publisher I can’t count how many times over the years I have had people tell me their favorite thing about Focus Magazine is waiting for the surprise each month of who is going to be on the cover. The best part of being a community magazine is that the faces in our magazine are your friends and neighbors. Usually the person we feature on the cover is a community leader heading up an organization or someone in public service, an individual who has greatly given of their time and/or resources to make our community a better place.
See why everyone is driving to Bartow to buy a car from TOM EDWARDS.
This month, however, the faces on the cover may not be widely known. These women have not started their own non-profit, own a large company or serve in community leadership roles. However, the impact they make in the world around them is no less significant. They are all moms giving life the best they’ve got and sacrificing more than many of us are called to give.
One of the winners was a woman named Vicki Hannah. You will notice that our story this year comes to you in her memory. As you will read in the article, Vicki was a single mom with terminal cancer. Vicki was able to have an amazing day of pampering, experiencing many things for the first time in her life. She in turn touched many lives around her. We hope that the stories in this year’s makeover article will impact you the way they have left a lasting impression on us. To watch this amazing day, please visit www.plantcityfocus.com and click on FocusTV.

Dr. Brenda Dukes Chiropractic Physician
KNOW THE VALUE OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE!
When nerve interference is removed from your body, the body works better. That means your resistance is higher. Does that mean that when a person coughs in your face, you will not get a cold, or you will just get a cold instead of the flu? Perhaps. If your nerve system is working at greater efficiency, will that make you think better, concentrate better, or be more effective in your work? The body has a better opportunity - to what degree we cannot say. It may be noticeable or it may not. Everyone is different. But it will make a difference. It is like exercising. You do not necessarily see a reduction in your waistline or bigger muscles after the first day of an exercise program but you know there is a change in your body. Often you can feel the change in the form of soreness or stiffness. The next time you exercise and you do not feel it, does not mean there has not been change? We really cannot perceive of all the positive things that are happening in our body when we receive an adjustment. Children who receive chiropractic adjustments at the earliest age possible are able to move closer to their full potential. There are positive changes taking place on the cellular level. Life giving energy is being restored to starved and depleted cells. You cannot measure the value of that. Conversely, we really cannot know the damage being done by a vertebral subluxation that cuts off the nerve supply to the tissue and cell in your body. It is robbing the quality and quantity of your life.
Sometimes we believe we can know it because of an immediate change or because a long standing problem is resolved after getting under care. But I would suggest that is only the tip of the iceberg. That is only a small part of the benefit of getting chiropractic adjustments on a regular basis. We really cannot know what microscopic effects are taking place. We really cannot know what immeasurable effects are occurring like higher resistance and improved physical, mental and emotional function. Lastly, we cannot know what life-extending effects are taking place. Like the commercial for a certain credit card, there are some things that you can put a price on and some things are priceless. Chiropractic care has been proven to show it has great value. Special Notes: Congratulations to all our 2011 graduates! God Bless You! On Sunday June 19th is Father’s Day. Please join with us in a spirit of Prayer for all Fathers, Grandfathers and all men that have been an inspiration. Also, on July 4th please continue to Pray for OUR NATION! Blessings, Dr. Dukes and Staff

Remember how eagerly you looked forward to summer vacation from school when you were young? There are children here in this community that with out our help would go hungry this summer. These children can’t look forward to summer without our help. Please consider contributing to the United Food Bank this summer. We really need your help. Every dollar you gives stays right here to help feed people who may be your neighbor’s or your neighbor’s children. No one in our community should go hungry. On behalf of the thousands of families we serve, we say thank you for your support. Let’s make sure that summer vacation this year is a time of happiness for children, not hunger. daVe daV a e byars is Chosen To aV offiCiaTe aT The liTTle league world series
Plant City’s Dave Byars has been selected to be one of the umpires that will officiate at the 2011 Little League Softball World Series held in Portland, Oregon on August 11-17. According to the Little League website, “Appointment as a member of the umpiring crew for a World Series is the highest honor Little League Baseball and Softball can bestow on an umpire. Selection as an umpire at any of Little League’s eight World Series means that person has reached the highest level of proficiency and by virtue of their selection is considered among the best in the world. David Byars had been a friend to the youth of Plant City for a number of years and is a respected community volunteer. He is a member of the Optimist Club has been active as a referee in Plant City Parks and Recreation Department’s flag football league, as well as, previously serving as the President of the Plant City Little League.
PlanT CiTy liTTle league’s 2011 homerun Club
Prior to the 2011 spring season the Little League International put out a moratorium on the use of composite bats for all baseball divisions. In 2010, with the use of composite bats, kids from PCLL hit (134) combined homeruns over the fence between the Minors, Majors, and Juniors Divisions! There was even one hit over the fence by an 8-year-old Machine Pitch player! As the season began that didn’t seem to affect the boys from Plant City too much! Most players had to go out and buy new Aluminum bats to be legally equipped to play! So who would have thought the homerun numbers would have even been close to last year’s total? As the season ended in late May with a final total of 111 homeruns out of the park, there were 3 players in the Juniors Division that hit (6) on the big fields, 4 players in the Minors Division that hit (6) as well, and 28 different players in the Majors Division that hit (99) homeruns! Does the difference in the bats really matter when just as many kids join the club each year? To see more of what is going on with your PCLL, including scores, standings, videos, and photos visit our website at www. plantcitylittleleague.com.
a huge Thank you from The uniTed food bank! A huge thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Mail Carrier Food Drive. The United Food Bank received 25,483 pounds of much needed food as a result of this great effort! This food donation helps us continue our efforts to feed the truly hungry in our community.
Thousands of individuals in Plant City find their family budgets stretched due to reduced or lack of employment. Purchasing food is not even an option in many of these households. Your continued support of food and financial donations makes a great difference!

Adventure five Parasailing
Focus Takes FlighT! Written By: shana johnson
At Focus, we set out to try 11 adventur es in 2011. So far, our trips have inclu ded a bouncy trip to Boing Jump Center, a speedy day of go kart racing at Ambassador Racing School in Wimauma, an exciting angling session of off shore fishing with Lyons Charters and a tactical day of pain at Action Paintball in Winter Haven. After all that excitemen t, we were all ready for a little relaxation . So we grabbed our shades, sunscreen and swimsuits and set sail.. . Parasail that is!
For our 5th adventure, the Focus team headed to Anna Maria Island and met up with YOLO Parasail for a day of fun in the sun. With their acronym motto, “You Only Live Onc e” we knew it would be an unforgettable trip.
The drive to Anna Maria is a pleasant interstate drive, less than 90 minutes from Plant City. Although parasailing is a popular activity at near ly all beautiful Florida beaches, what sets it apart at Anna Maria is the breathtaking views of sparkling blue waters and bright white sandy shores, colors that will make you feel as though you’ve traveled to the Caribbean. However, no passport is needed for travel to this Floridian paradise in our backyard. YOLO owner Ryan Davis never take s his dream job for granted. Sure, he makes a living soaking up the sunshine, but what he finds most fulfil ling is the people. “Everyone is alwa ys happy, smiling, ready to have a great time.” The Focus Magazine fun-seekers are no different. We have been jumping, racing, fishing and shooting. Now we can cross another action verb off our bucket list: “flying.” Mike and DeDe Floyd, Julie Hasting, Angel Carter, Tony Cartagena and I, Shana Johnson, took flight with the seagulls as a smiley face yellow parachute hoisted us in tandem pairs 500 feet in the air. Noticeably missing from the group was the king of kung fu and office IT guru, Anthony Sassano, who conveniently fell ill the morning of the high flying outing. Despite how it may seem, parasailin g is a delightfully tranquil activity. Ryan Davis explained that many of YOLO’s visitors have a common misc onception. “Most people do not expe ct parasailing to be so relaxing. They think it will be a stomach-drop ping adrenaline rush like a roller coas ter when actually, you feel weightless. You feel like you’re flying like a bird.” Angel and I were the first pair to take flight. Having done it before, I knew what to expect. Angel, on the other hand, had no clue. She had to psyche herself into it, so shortly after boarding the boat she was eager to get up in the air before her resolve acquiescd into second thoughts. It didn ’t take long before she was all smiles, as she gracefully soared into the sky. She said the ride was smooth and calming - not what she expected. Surprisingly, her favorite part was the most thrilling... being lowered down to dip her feet in the water. Julie Hasting also flew with a newbie. Having parasailed many times before, this seasoned pro helped to calm graphic designer Tony during the flight by singing. “I loved experiencing it with Sweet T. He was a little anxious, but he overcame his fear! ” As it was for Angel, the dip was also the highlight for DeDe Floyd. As Julie , Angel, Tony and I shouted, “Take them down. Soak them!” the boat captains followed orders and let Mik e and DeDe dip a little more than just their feet. “I loved it!” said Mike. “If I didn’t have that head came ra on I would have wanted to be in the water even more!” The head camera that caused a downpla y of DeDe’s dip is our innovative devic e to capture amazing aerial views for the FOCUSTV video of the trip. Along with leg harnesses and life jackets, it is the perfect parasailing accessory. After checking out our bird’s-eye shots online at focu splantcity.com/category/focustv, grab your camera and capture your own memories at YOLO Parasail of Ann a Maria Island! After all, “You Only Live Once!”

Flip Flops, Bermuda shorts and Caribbean 10th Annual Margarita Ball shirts Caps off a Decade of Fun Q
Auction winners, Josh and Kendelle Jimenez
article By: Brian West
uestion: What do you get when you bring a couple hundred people together in casual dress to just spend time together listening to music and eating some really great food? Answer: The 2011 Margarita Ball! The Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce has sponsored the Margarita Ball for 10 years now, and each year the event has been held at the home of Rick and Di Lott located in Walden Lake’s Polo Place. Their home has provided a perfect backdrop for this type of event; a casual, outdoor setting for time with friends, and this year was no different. For the price of a ticket, attendees were treated to live music by Williams Road, casino games, great food, and plenty of margaritas. In all, several hundred people enjoyed a few hours relaxing under the Lott’s covered lanai and around the pool deck while the band performed some great songs, including the tropical sounds of Jimmy Buffett in the mix.

for several weekend getaways and the crowning of the 2011 Margarita Ball King and Queen. The Chamber brought back the King and Queen from last year – Billy Keel and Candy Owens, who passed on their crowns. This year, Steve Nierman, Jim Scott and Chamber Chairman, Lee Williams vied for the coveted distinction of Margarita Ball King, while Gail Lyons, Jean Ann Davenport, Tina Pike and Leslie Davis vied for the diva role of Margarita Ball Queen. The King and Queen are determined by who raises the most money. This year, Lee Williams and Tina Pike were crowned King and Queen, respectively. Pike said, “When Queen Candy placed the goblet on my head, I was thrilled and grateful to the people that supported me. My king, Lee Williams, and I look forward to the royal duties for this upcoming year.”
The proceeds for the event go to the Chamber Foundation to fund college scholarships for local high school graduates. At the end of the evening the Chamber announced that this would be the last Margarita Ball hosted by the Lotts, so thanks to the Lotts for 10 great years. Had the Lotts not hosted the event, the Chamber would have been challenged to find a better location. The Margarita Ball committee has already met and are currently discussing possible locations for next year and possible changes for the event. All in all, the Chamber has raised several thousands of dollars for college scholarships and has had a lot of fun doing it over these last 10 years. Here’s to the future of the event and another 10 years of success – cheers!

Rather than attending classes and recreation activities during the day, M-Fuge offers campers the opportunity to do hands-on mission work. This might include helping to build homes for Habitat for Humanity, and serving meals at soup kitchens or homeless shelters. M-Fuge students also have the opportunity to minister through helping out at Boys and Girls Clubs, visiting assisted living facilities and nursing homes or doing yard work for the elderly.

ocal talent brought a lot of variety to benefit Christ’s Community Café and The Bread of Life Mission. It was held May 21, 2011 at the First United Methodist of Plant City. Hors d’oueveres and delicious desserts were prepared by Franz Chez for those who attended. An auction was also held to help raise money for these missions. financial hardships a hot lunch every Friday. Nancy Chaney, Board Chair of Christ’s Community Café shared, “Remember at the end of the A-Team when they said, ‘Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together.’ That’s Christ’s Community Café in a nutshell.” Pastor Julio Santana established The Bread of Life Mission 17 years ago to help migrant and minority families. “We might be the only Bible available to them,” Pastor Julio shared.
written by: Diana Brink
The entertainment began with Puppets with a Purpose performing with sticks to “Arise My Love.” Pastor Julio’s son, Pedro Santana, performed next on his guitar and sang. One song he wrote because of a life he became aware of while he served four years during his father’s absence. The evening continued with the Bread of Life Children’s Choir, the Native American named Silverhawk (winner of 2010 Tampa Bay’s Artist of the Year), Jeanine Bell and the Country Belles,
Southern Star who just reunited after an 18 month break, and an Evangelical Presbyterian Church performance artist who painted a picture while music was playing. Each brought unique gifts of music or artistry to the stage while working towards one common goal: to make Plant City a better community and one that supports helpful missions such as Bread of Life and Christ’s Community Café.

They would have been bored because they did not have anything to hold their attention, something hands on.” The hands on type of instruction Simmons students receive includes courses in culinary, construction, business technology, and health science. “We are going to have ROTC this coming fall. It just gives the kids an opportunity to get into these different careers and prepare them for life after high school,” teacher Hassani Jackson said. Cooper Turner, the Simmons school social worker, described his experience as a pageant coordinator. “It was very encouraging. I have been at Simmons for six years now, and unfortunately, we really haven’t had anything to showcase our students talents. Now the school has something to get the kids focused and motivated. The girls were nervous since this was a lot of for them. This was the first time for most of being involved in something like this. It brought out their abilities, their talents, and a lot of their potential.”
Simmons Calender Girl banquet S article By: Shana Mitchell
immons Career Center is giving its students something special to look forward to with their first annual Calendar Girl Competition. Although the pageant was in January, the project phases have stretched throughout the year. Last month, the girls were given a day of royal treatment at their calendar luncheon and photo shoot. They traveled by stretch Hummer limo from Simmons to the Red Rose Inn. All dolled up, the girls enjoyed a lunch buffet in the elegant dining room before their photo shoot. Month by month, each winner posed in model mode in front of the camera and let her newly gained confidence shine for the pictures

that will grace the pages of the calendar. Being a calendar girl would be a dream come true for many girls in high school, but it is an exceptionally exciting accomplishment for the girls at Simmons who miss out on traditions like Friday night football games, yearbooks, and proms. These are parts of secondary education that students at alternative high schools do not always get to experience. But with its first annual Calendar Girl competition, Simmons Career Center is striving to give a traditional high school experience to its nontraditional student body. The calendar girl competition is a popular part of social agendas in other
area schools. Janie Castillo told us how the pageant started at Simmons. “They do it at Plant City High and at Durant High School. It is really big at Durant. So FCCLA at Simmons thought , “Why don’t we try this? We raised $1,500 in ticket sales for the actual competition. I am president of the club. We saw it as a big accomplishment.” The competition did more than just raise funds. It raised confidence and expanded the definition of beauty for high school students. The calendar girls at Simmons are out to prove that being a beauty queen does not require fitting into a narrow mold. “You don’t have to be small, tall, or skinny. In the 12 months, we have a different range of varieties in ethnicities,” Castillo said. “We don’t have to have blonde hair and blue eyes. It doesn’t really matter. Just as long as you have a good personality... and you can rock it!” The principal at Simmons, Suny Chazares, describes his school as “a different venue compared to traditional high schools.” He said, “These kids are known for doing better with a hands
Even though Simmons is an alternative to a traditional high school, the career center has initiated a popular high school activity they hope will become a long standing tradition. Turner concluded, “Now we have something concrete to offer the students to help them hone in skills they didn’t know they had. I was very proud to be a part of it and I think it is going to grow to be even bigger than it was this year.”

Turkey Creek Middle School Olympic Day F
Written By: Kim Jordan
or the past seven years Turkey Creek Middle School has set aside a special day before the end of the school year. Olympic Day is one day that the Administration, staff and student body looks forward to, a day of fun and celebration, the American way. The event starts with the lighting of the TCMS Olympic Torch and the sound of “Let the games begin” and ends with competitions between teachers and a red, white, and blue balloon send off. Olympic Day is developing into much more than just a sports event. Based on the three pillars “Move”, “Learn” and

“Discover”, Turkey Creek Middle School is incorporating sports, cultural elements, and educational activities into their P.E. program. Each student competes in various events to earn a gold, silver or bronze medal. Also during the day, students can visit and hang out in the Olympic Village. Turkey Creek’s Olympic Day would not be possible without the help of professionals from MacDill Air Force, The Hillsborough County Mounted Posse Unit, PTA and Coach Butch Valdes from Durant High School who oversees the Archery Competition.

This year, your local Keller Williams volunteers donated a day of their goodwill and energy by helping unload and stock thousands of pounds of donated groceries to the United Food Bank of Plant City. UFBPC executive director, Kelleigh Klein, quotes that in the past year the food bank has supplied over 27,000 clients with approximately 700,000 pounds of food, a major increase from the 2009 numbers with 19,000 clients and 432,000 pounds of food. As the community continues to donate, so does the need for help in arranging and shelving the foodstuffs in order that distribution to those in need can be accomplished in a quick and organized manner. The Keller Williams crew, assembled ten deep with volunteers, worked like
a well-oiled assembly line or Olympic relay team as they unloaded truckload after truckload of goods. The hauling and lifting of heavy cases of canned food was tiring, no doubt, but team members kept a cheery disposition by holding a friendly competition to determine which member had the most stocked shelves. The team cared so much about the cause that they even arranged the juices with labels facing out, perhaps to add to the aesthetic quality of the food bank shelves or to exemplify their dedication to helping those in need. Volunteer Lisa Spencer is proud of the work accomplished over RED Day, but encourages more people to donate to the United Food Bank. This is especially critical over the summer when the food bank runs its Summer Nutrition Outreach Program for Children to guarantee no child will go hungry when school meals are not available. The United Food Bank is completely dependent on us, the community, for support and supplies, so remember your neighbors in need when cleaning out your pantry or purchasing those great “Buy One, Get One Free” bargains. Local Veterans
Honored with Engraved Bricks at Veterans’ Monument in Courier Field written by: Amanda Molinaro
T
his past Memorial Day weekend, Plant City veterans and their families gathered at the Veterans’ Monument at Courier Field to commemorate their services and sacrifices to this nation with the unveiling of engraved memorial bricks set in their honor. The Veterans’ Monument at Courier Field is a beautifully landscaped plot of land with oaks, magnolia, and jasmine enhanced by the brick paved roads of historic downtown Plant City. The proud bronze eagle soaring atop the Freedom Rising monument is hard to miss as you drive past the field on Wheeler Street. The members of the Plant City Armed Forces Memorials Foundation committee wanted to create a peaceful location where veterans could come and sit in quiet reflection and meditation while also demonstrating the respect the city has for their service. Everyone who has visited agrees: Mission accomplished. The committee plans to cover the northern end of the park, leading from the gazebo up to the Freedom Rising monument, with engraved bricks bearing the names and rankings of Plant City veterans. On May 27, the committee unveiled about a hundred more memorial
bricks to a crowd of veterans and their families. To begin the uncovering, the Plant City Community Choir assembled under the gazebo to perform a medley of Armed Forces theme songs. Committee director Jennifer Closshey then thanked all attending and recounted the Veteran’s Monument recent beginnings and expressed her hopes for its future. Plant City Mayor Daniel D. Raulerson spoke in honor of our vets and assured that their duties will always be remembered and preserved. To close, the 6th grade choir from Tomlin Middle School sang “America the Beautiful.” Then, committee activist, veteran, and landscaping “grunt” (he explained that he painstakingly partook in the planting of all the wonderful greenery in the field) George Banning and others slid the silk tarp off of the new memorial bricks adding the total of dedications to 500. If you are interested in honoring your vet at Courier field, stop by and pick up an order form. The $150 donation for each brick is used to maintain the beautiful park as a serene haven for the veterans who have sacrificed so much, even their all. This community will never forget. foCUS Magazine Plant City june 2011

Mike Sansone Park aerial 1966
Summer Activities: T submitted By: Plant City Photo Archives & History Center
he City of Plant City, Florida, is home to various parks and recreational fields that are enjoyable throughout the year, but most delightful during the summer months. The city government website officially lists 19 parks, playgrounds, and athletic complexes in Plant City (City of Plant City, 2011). Of these recreational areas, many are named after well-known individuals who lived in town. For example, Mike E. Sansone Community Park gets its name from an Italian immigrant who was a barber and served the U.S. as a soldier in both world wars. This 75-plus acre park features a nature trail, basketball courts, baseball/ softball fields, a Girl Scouts troop house, and a Tourist Information Center provided by the City of Plant City. Other Plant City parks have received their names from people with occupation titles such as governor, civic organizer, and newspaper editor/publisher. Also in town is a downtown plaza that is identified by the surname of a man who worked in many public capacities for the city. Gilchrist Park gets its name from Florida Governor Albert W. Gilchrist (19091913). Mr. Gilchrist bestowed upon Plant City about five acres of land by the Oak Branch area of town for what would be

the development of a city park. This park’s amenities include: picnic tables, restrooms, pavilions, and two playgrounds. One of the playgrounds stands out as it serves children with disabilities, a gift supplied by the Plant City Rotary Club and the Plant City Daybreak Rotary Club. In addition, the rectangular-shaped park has plenty of trees to keep you in the shade during the sunny summer season. Marie B. Ellis Park was named in remembrance of a woman who devoted her life to her community in a myriad of ways. During her life, Marie B. Ellis was a tutor, Sunday school teacher, church clerk, choir singer, and civic organizer. Her civic engagement efforts significantly contributed to the creation of the park that now bears her name. For instance, Mrs. Ellis was initially interested in materializing a park from a vacant lot in town when she discovered that the property had already been “reserved for a park in the Negro section southeast of downtown” (Bruton & Bailey, Jr., 1984, p. 250). After learning that purchasing land would not be necessary, Marie B. Ellis proceeded to acquire funds for developing the park. She would also use her labor towards the cultivation of the park by watering plants and maintaining the shrubbery at desired
heights. Mrs. Ellis personally coordinated civic and veterans organizations during World War II and mobilized young people to participate in activities such as a Youth Council March and an Easter program. In the present day, Marie B. Ellis Park is home to a gazebo, swing set, playground, and shuffleboard courts for the recreationists in Plant City. Courier Field’s history stretches back farther in time than most people would assume. Many town residents are probably aware that the park’s current name comes from A.P. Cooke and The Courier of which he was editor before his family bought the newspaper in 1944. However, at the outset of the park’s existence the W.B. Herring family had ownership rights and the park was utilized as a public place for people to gather and listen to academic lectures. After the close-by 1914 Plant City High School was built, the block was used by the P.E. department of the school. Through his newspaper column, Mr. Cooke successfully promoted the raising of funds for the acquisition of the privately-held park for the purpose of putting the property in the possession of Hillsborough County Schools (hence its original name was A.P. CookeCourier Field). In 2003, with the old high
school long gone, the school district gave the Courier Field property to the City (City of Plant City, 2011). Once in the City’s hands, the park experienced many additions. For example, the restrooms, pavilion, and playground have made the park more accessible to the public. A unique aspect to Courier Field is the Veterans Monument in the northern part of the park. The expansion of the park in this direction was brought about by the Plant City Armed Forces Memorials Foundation, Inc. with the helping hand of the community. McCall Park is a downtown treat for pedestrians. Running alongside the railroad tracks, this park was constructed as part of a project to revitalize downtown Plant City. Its name comes from Theodore J. McCall, a man who spent twenty-seven years as City Manager. McCall’s city manager role culminated a career of working for the city of Plant City in just about every capacity imaginable. McCall was part of the fire department before working as a motorcycle patrolman. Later he became a jailor, then temporary police chief, and following that he was the street and sanitation superintendent. During McCall’s time as City Manager the city experienced a 240% increase in population, about 60 miles of city streets were paved, 10 miles of sidewalks were installed, and a new industrial waste treatment plant was built. McCall Park occupies a four block area parallel to a CSX rail line. The east side of the park meets with the Union Station Depot, which is now a museum. Throughout the year, the park is home to numerous activities and entertainment events such as the Classic Car Show and Bike Fest, and it has lately hosted the “It’s That Happy Spring Thing” festival. These and other parks in town are maintained by the Parks Division, which is located on 1904 South Park Road. Whether you want to enjoy a stroll, take kids to a playground, or play a sport, Plant City has the park for you. Capturing the essence of civic pride, the Plant City community is fortunate to have so many wonderful places for residents and tourists to relax, play, remember, celebrate, compete, collaborate, and appreciate the natural phenomena in life. So if boredom sets in during the summer months, be sure to take the opportunity to visit a Plant City park to experience some R&R Sources: Plant City Photo Archives & History Center; Quintilla Geer Bruton and David E. Your Hearing Loss Impacts Everyone Around You!
Dr. Lisa E. Tanner
Hearing loss has a big impact not only on you, but also those around you. Hearing loss can cause you to be misunderstood and inaccurate perceptions can be formed about you. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually; therefore, a breakdown in communication can occur without you realizing that your hearing loss is the cause. Some people with hearing loss compensate by adopting certain coping strategies such as: blufďŹ ng, dominating the conversation or a tendency to withdraw from social gatherings. Has communication become stressful for you and others around you? Let us help!

focus on you
makeover In Memory of Vicki Hannah
Beginning in early spring, Focus Magazine invited the community to send in letters of nomination for people in the Plant City community whom they believe are deserving of a day of pampering. Over several weeks we accumulated dozens of letters that are mailed and e-mailed to our offices. For the last few years, Cork Elementary has made it a grade-wide project for all fourth graders as a writing assignment to describe someone in their life who deserves the makeover. The teachers then narrow down the letters and bring many of those to the Focus offices. On May 13 the Focus staff gathered to read all the letters and this year, many tears were shed as we learned about the lives many of the strong women in our community hold together. It’s
always an extremely difficult project, but we ultimately narrow it down to four winners. In the following pages, you will read the letters of the four who were chosen for the makeover. In the meantime, we partner with businesses across the community to line up an eventful experience. Companies donate their time and resources to make sure that the winners feel pampered from head-to-toe. This year, their day began on a Thursday evening shopping at Dillard’s of the Westfield Mall in Brandon. They were given free reign to peruse the store and pick out a new outfit. With assistance from the Dillard’s representatives, they selected outfits to flatter their figures and make them feel like the beautiful women they are. Accessories for their outfits were donated by You Boutique and shoes were donated by The Shoe Depot. Then, on Friday May 20th, the winners met for breakfast at Fred’s Southern Kitchen. Jarrett-Scott Ford and Bartow Chevrolet donated SUVs for the day so the ladies could be chauffeured around for their appointments. From there, we whisked them off to massages and facials donated by The Artistry, The
Breeze, Dukes Chiropractic, and Remedi Day Spa. Everyone gathered mid-day for a lunch provided by Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant. Next, it was off to manicures, pedicures, hair and make-up provided by The Artistry, The Breeze, Mya Matlie, Mystic Nails & Spa, and Textures Hair Salon. After their pampering was complete, the women went home to dress and meet their date. Finally, a limo provided by Dream Limo arrived at each home to pick up the winners and escort them to the Red Rose Inn and Suites where they enjoyed a splendid night of dinner and dancing. Please continue reading the following pages to meet each of the four amazing women, hear their stories, and their take on the day’s events.

ometimes life presents you with options to do the easy, convenient thing or the inconvenient difficult task that is simply the right thing to do. For Kim, she chose the narrow road. Having retired from raising four of her own children, she and her new husband were just beginning to make a new life for themselves when Kim took custody of two of her grandaughters. A few years ago she was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a disease that causes horrible muscle weakness and fatigue. Kim didn’t get to go shopping with us Thursday night because Nadia’s softball team was playing in the championship game of the season. (They went on to win the championship game and the district championship game!) She went earlier in the day by herself and the Dilllard’s associates helped her pick out a fabulous semi-formal evening dress. Throughout the day, Kim approached every moment with both excitement and appreciation. She received all of her treatments from The Artistry whose staff made sure she felt pampered. “Being treated like a queen is something I’ve never had in my life,” she said. The Artistry not only made her feel like a queen, but they put together a Redken products goodie bag to help her color last longer. Kim was so excited about her makeover that she arranged to have the limo pick her up at her neighbor’s house so her husband wouldn’t see her until it was time to get in the limo and ride to dinner together. They enjoyed their romantic evening together, since it’s rare that they have time to themselves. Kim knew that because of her disease, this long day was going to deplete her energy and it would take her more than a full day in bed to recover, but she said “It was worth it. I’ve never won anything in my life. I felt like a movie star, and I just don’t want it to end.”

hen we read this letter, what we loved most about it was that even though Kim has faced hardships in her life, she has not allowed them to hold her or her family back in any way. When Michelle described her as continuing to give to others despite her obstacles, we imagined a positive, optimistic, and energetic woman who focuses on everyone else except herself. Women like Kim are exactly why we do the makeover every year. We know that there are so many altruistic women who will never take the opportunity to treat themselves, so we want to pamper them. And when we met Kim, boy did we realize Michelle was spot on.
After
We called Kim on her cell phone to give her the news and she answered while at work at the Walden Lake Early Learning Center. For the first few minutes of the conversation she was completely convinced that someone was playing a joke on her. Once we could convince her it was legitimate, she ran over to her boss and talked so fast you could barely understand what she was saying, but somehow managed to ask for Friday off. By the way she reacted, her boss actually assumed something was wrong with her son because she was acting so frantic. A couple days later, the reality sunk in, and perky Kim met us at the office to head over to Dillard’s. It’s not often you get to go to the department store and just try on everything you want. There were so many outfits we all liked on her, but one in particular stood out amongst the rest. Kim decided to go with it because she said it was so far out of her comfort zone that she wanted to take this opportunity to try something she never would otherwise. Those of us who saw her thought she looked like a knockout! Kim’s makeover team did a phenomenal job. But what really sent her day over the top was her experience at Textures. They spent extra time making sure her makeup and hair would bring out her best features. Then they offered for her husband to enjoy a new cut, too, so the couple would look their best for their date. Finally, Textures filled an entire goody bag with products and items as a gift to her. Meanwhile, several of her co-workers who live around the corner in Walden Lake found out she was almost ready. They decided to hop in their cars and come see her. By the time the limo arrived to pick them up, a crowd had gathered to cheer for Kim as she left for her romantic evening. “Everyone treated me like royalty,” said Kim. “It’s been an absolutely wonderful day. I took in every moment. I took it slow and appreciated every moment. It was wonderful.” Kim said that more than anything, this experience taught her she needs to take time for herself. “I think a lot of women don’t take the time for themselves. I realized today that sometimes I just need to stop,” said Kim. “I will look at tomorrow differently.”

ayle’s letter made everyone on our staff choke up. We knew that the least we could do for this family was treat Sheila to a day all about her. We called Sheila on her cell and when she answered she started crying. “Kayle, they chose mommy,” she uttered.
We just so happened to call while Sheila was at the grocery store with her husband in his scooter and Kayle at her side. It had been a very rough week for the family with multiple trips to Moffitt. We called her on a Monday, and she had Kayle out of school because right now, the most important thing to them was spending time together as a family. She was able to meet us Thursday night to head over to Brandon. We spent a few hours shopping around and after trying on more than a dozen outfits, when she walked out in the last outfit we had selected, everyone knew she had saved the best for last. She looked amazing. The makeover team embraced Sheila’s personality and worked their charm. When she stepped out of the limo, Julie Hastings and DeDe Floyd, two of our staff who helped out throughout the day, started crying. She looked absolutely stunning and we were all floored by the amazing job Matt did. Matt asked her “Do you trust me to do whatever I want?” She said that was fine and for the two hours he spent on her hair, he didn’t let anyone know what his plans were. Her transformation was astonishing and the entire night you couldn’t keep the smile off her face. “I haven’t felt this great in a long time,” said Sheila, “I’ll be on cloud nine for a while.” Sheila’s date for the evening was Kayle. Bealls Department Store supplied the dress for Kayle’s dinner at the Red Rose. “I haven’t seen her this way in a long time. She looks really pretty,” said Kayle at the end of their exciting evening together.

he Focus Makeover team believed this story would break anyone’s heart. The least we could do was to reach out and help Vicki enjoy a worry-free day. She was unable to come shopping with us Thursday because she had just been released from Moffit and had little energy. She decided to stay home and rest so she could participate all day Friday. We got her sizes and Dillard’s allowed us to pick out several outfits to take back to Plant City and allow Vicki to try on different options. She expressed her excitement several times about this opportunity because she had never had a massage, facial, mani/pedi or even been in a limo. She knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity she didn’t want to miss.
After
Vicki made it to breakfast and was immediately able to connect with Sheila, our other makeover winner whose husband suffers with cancer. The two were able to share many stories. After breakfast we headed out to take the “before” pictures and to hop in the car for our first appointments. However, this limited amount of activity soaked up most of the energy Vicki had. We decided to take her to her first appointment at The Breeze so she could stay in one location all day and not have to move around to several places. She was even able to nap after her massage, and we brought her soup for lunch so she didn’t have to leave again. The makeover team at The Breeze was absolutely phenomenal. They helped her to feel relaxed and enjoy her day slowly. Then they made her feel beautiful with a new hairstyle and makeup. She was even able to leave a little early for a few hours rest at home with Taylor before the limo picked them up. During the limo ride Vicki started to feel very ill. She had been fighting off an infection all week and by Friday evening it was really taking a toll on her. As soon as the limo arrived Vicki had to rush to the ladies room. Her son Taylor, who was her date, was able to hang out with the rest of the winners and have his picture taken. Unfortunately, we had to call an ambulance for Vicki because her condition was only worsening.
Vicki with her son Taylor in the limo on the way to the Red Rose Inn and Suites.
Taylor hung out with all of us for the evening and was the biggest hit on the dance floor. He was teaching everyone how to moonwalk and was quite the 11-year-old ladies’ man. The Red Rose was overly generous, as usual, and donated a gift certificate for Vicki to come back another time with Taylor. We were able to provide accommodations for Taylor for the weekend while his mom was in the hospital. Sadly, after several days of fighting, Vicki’s body succumbed to the infection. She passed away on Thursday, May 26th at South Florida Baptist Hospital. Arrangements are now in process for Taylor to remain in the care of a close friend of Vicki’s. Although this story is filled with grief, we are so humbled that God opened the doors for Vicki’s letter to cross our path that on her last real day of experiencing life, she was able to be pampered and relax before getting dolled up to go on a limo ride with her son. We hope that Taylor feels peace knowing his last real memory with his mom was such a special moment for the two of them.

Valedictorians The Best of the Best
Be encouraged by the wisdom of three Class of 2011 high school valedictorians: Amy Bearison of Durant, Jennifer Chen of Strawberry Crest, and Nathan Cruzado of Plant City. Typically, this title (Latin; vale dicere - to say farewell) is conferred upon the highest grade point graduate who then must wordsmith speeches to inspire reflection and express gratitude for the years many call the happiest of their lives. Focus extends appreciation to the Hillsborough County Public School system, supportive families, dedicated educators, and this caring community for assisting such excellent students. Our future is in great hands. Focus: Congratulations, Valedictorians. Tell us first about your supportive families. Bearison: My parents are Kim and Fred Bearison and grandparents are Carol & Leonard Bearison, Patricia Robertozzi, & Ross Sofka. My brother Craig and sister Cara are 19-year-old twins. She’s at University of Florida and he attends Duke University. I’m a Brandon native. Chen: My parents, Peter Chen and Su Yan Su, were great encouragers. My older brother, Christopher Chen, 19, is an honors graduate now at UF and my younger sister, Joanna, 12, is also a good student. I was born in Tampa and attended PCHS before SCHS. Cruzado: My dad, David Cruzado, is an electrical engineer at Honeywell. My mom, Carole Cruzado, is now a first-year teacher at Marshall Middle School. My sister Haley is a PCHS freshman. I was born in Fairfax, Virginia in 1992. We moved here in ‘95. Prior to PCHS, I was homeschooled through Florida Virtual School in 7th-8th grade.

Focus: What did it take to achieve valedictorian status at your school? Bearison: I completed 14 AP classes and 4 dual enrollment classes to finish with a 7.4 weighted GPA and 4.0 unweighted. I’m an AP Scholar with Distinction whose strength is Math. Chen: After 13 AP classes, my GPA is 4.0 unweighted GPA and 6.56 weighted. Science and math are my best subjects. Cruzado: Of 14 AP courses, I earned a 5 on eight of the exams, with results on five classes still pending. My GPA is 6.92 weighted and 4.0 unweighted. Two computer science courses I took online through HCC. My strengths are math and science, although I enjoy reading and have done equally well in my English classes. I don’t enjoy writing essays. Focus: What are your plans for college? Bearison: I’ve been accepted into the University of Florida Honors Program and am a Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholar. I’ll major in biology on a premed track. Chen: At the University of Florida, I plan on majoring in either pharmacology or Biomedical Science. Cruzado: I will attend Auburn University on an academic scholarship to study mathematics and electrical engineering. Auburn was a great fit for me because they offered a good scholarship, it has a strong engineering program and the small town reminds me of Plant City. The Rotary Club sponsored me to attend a summer program there last year, which is when I first considered Auburn as a primary choice.

Although I do not compete, I practice Shotokan Karate at Chris Welbon Karate Clubs and am currently a brown belt. I am an active member of Plant City’s First Baptist Church youth group. Focus: When did you determine to pursue the valedictorian ranking? Bearison: Junior year. Chen: I didn’t... Cruzado: I decided at the beginning of freshman year when I realized that being the valedictorian was a possibility. I was already ahead because of Florida Virtual School classes I took in 7th-8th grade, and I decided I would not let this advantage go to waste. Focus: Briefly mention one thing you’ll remember about your high school experience. Bearison: Besides academic accomplishments, I will remember always pushing myself to do my best. Also, I’ll remember the life-long friends and the great school spirit at Durant. Chen: My friends... Cruzado: When I think back to high school, I probably won’t remember all the hard work. Instead I’ll remember the friends I made and the teachers who inspired me. Focus: What advice do you have for students following in your footsteps? Bearison: Take every class seriously and even when the course work seems overwhelming, never give up. The hard work will pay off. Chen: Don’t push yourself too hard. Relax a little by taking easier classes rather than stressing yourself by taking all AP classes. Just to try to raise your GPA, because if you take on too much all at once, then you won’t do as well as you would hope to... Cruzado: Start planning now and plan ahead. Each year builds on the next, so if you can figure in freshman year where you want to be senior year it makes everything go smoother. Also, having a clear goal in mind helps you make it through the day-to-day tedium. Valedictorian must be willing to sacrifice free time and fun in order to take more classes that maximize your GPA. Focus: So, about the speech - was it difficult to write and present?
with much, much more will be asked.’ We can use the creativity and the intelligence God has given us to create and use technology to make the world a better place. We have been entrusted with much, so let’s dream big.” Focus: OK, Valedictorians. Let’s end with a few parent comments. The Bearisons: “We are very proud of our daughter. She truly has been very selfmotivated and has worked so hard to achieve this…We know Amy will do very well in college.” The Chens: “When she started at Strawberry Crest we believed Jennifer could be valedictorian. We simply told our three children, ‘Do well in school and stay out of trouble. We will work to supply everything you need so you accomplish your best.’ Jennifer has made us proud and we expect she will be very successful in life.” The Cruzados: Mom says - “…Nathan has worked hard and sacrificed many leisure activities to become PCHS valedictorian. God has blessed Nathan with a keen intellect and an insatiable desire to learn. He has an amazing memory for the most obscure facts. Even when he is not studying for school, he is constantly researching topics on his own. He formulated a plan in his freshman year to become valedictorian and then worked to follow through…We are extremely proud of him.” Dad says - “While working to become valedictorian, Nathan was also able to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, something that only 4% of scouts reach. I am so proud of him for setting and accomplishing both goals.” Congratulations, 2011 Graduates. As you determine our future, be the ones to make a difference. We’re counting on you.
Bearison: No, it just took a little time. Whenever I was inspired or had an idea, I would write it down. Pretty soon I had enough “thoughts” for the speech, and I just had to fill in the gaps. Here’s a bit of an excerpt: ‘Our generation is responsible for reversing the damage our society has already taken…although this mission will be very difficult, with an optimistic attitude, strong work ethic, and determination, we can improve our nation.’ Chen: Considering that I’m part of the first Strawberry Crest High School graduating class, I felt self-imposed pressure to write a speech my classmates would not loathe. It was kind of hard to keep everyone’s likes and dislikes in mind because I’m not really a good writer in the first place. Neither has the pressure nor pleas of many classmates for shout-outs helped. When I wrote my speech I took into consideration what we experienced during our time at Strawberry Crest and wrote what I felt. I also took into consideration the fact we all came from different high schools before SCHS. Cruzado: Writing most of my speech was easy, but then I was confronted with the need for it to be significant. As such I had difficulty with the finishing touches. Here are a few lines: ‘Our generation will have the most powerful tools in the history of mankind at its disposal. How we define and use technology now will matter for hundreds of years. This power leaves us with an important responsibility. Luke 12:48 says, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted

business » business profile The Farm’s website showcases their Country Store, which gives a good description of the bounty offered in each basket. The Store includes other healthy, homemade items for sale, and sometimes on sale, including preserves and spreads, pickled beets, salad dressing, granola, baked goods, honey, and dairy items. Instructions on how to place an order are available on the website. Not all items offered in the Country Store or included in the baskets are from the Lancaster’s farm. They also support local farming. For example, the only fruit item currently grown by Lancaster’s Hydro Farm is strawberries; therefore all other fruits are from other local farms. Lancaster’s ultimate goal is to unite with other local farms and to build more co-ops within neighboring communities.

f you have ever shopped for produce in the grocery store, you experienced the pain of high prices, especially when purchasing organically grown vegetables and fruit. But now you don’t have to be wealthy to eat healthy. Lancaster’s Hydro Farm offers baskets of fresh, organically grown vegetables and fruits, delivered straight to your door. Mike and Angela Lancaster own and operate this successful hydroponic vertical growing farm. Both Mike and Angela were born and raised in the Brandon area. In 2006, after much prayer and research, they decided to try their hand at growing their own vegetables hydroponically.
And this is where their farm benefits the community. By having the ability to grow year round, they also have the ability to offer a rare personal service - the opportunity to join their Produce Club. For $20 annually, members are entitled to receive weekly/bi-weekly home delivery of “fresh from the farm” produce. Produce is picked within a few hours of being delivered to your doorstep in a basket. Mike and Angela do ask that baskets be returned the following week in order to keep cost of membership low.
A variety of baskets may be purchased ranging in price from $28 to $46. All baskets are interchangeable. For example, one week a member might choose to have a Combo Basket delivered (combination Basically, hydroponic growing means of vegetables and fruits), and the next without the use of soil. “Plants are grown week would like only the Vegetable Basket. in a hydro stacker. Explore When Different Purchasing Options Bonds submitted By: edward jones
A
s an investor, you may find that bonds can be a valuable part of your holdings. But there’s more than one way to own bonds, so you’ll want to be familiar with the various investment vehicles available — because the more you know, the better the choices you’ll be able to make. So, let’s look at three popular ways of owning bonds: Individual bonds —When you buy an individual bond, you will receive predictable interest payments. And when your bond matures, you’ll get the original principal back, unless the issuer defaults, which is not common in cases of “investment grade” bonds. However, the value of your bond — the price you could get for it if you sold it on the open market before it matured — will fluctuate over time, primarily in response to interest rates. (When market rates go up, the value of your bond drops, and vice versa.) In general, you’ll pay at least $5,000 for an individual bond, though that amount may vary. Consequently, while this approach gives you more control, it can be more time consuming and require a larger investment in order to build a diverse fixed-income portfolio. Bond funds — By investing in a bond-based mutual fund, which may own dozens of different types of bonds, you can efficiently increase your
diversification, which is important, because diversification can help reduce credit risk (although it can’t guarantee a profit or protect against a loss). A bond fund does not pay you a fixed rate of return; instead, you receive dividends, which will fluctuate based on the underlying bonds’ interest rates and capital appreciation. In addition, bond funds don’t have a maturity date when principal is repaid. Keep in mind that when you purchase bond funds, you could be subject to capital gains taxes in two different ways: if you sell your fund shares for a profit or if the fund manager sells an underlying bond for more than it’s worth. This increased capital gains liability is one reason that many people put bond funds in a tax-deferred vehicle, such as an IRA or a 401(k). Bond UITs — A unit investment trust (UIT), like a mutual fund, contains a variety of bonds, so you get the benefit of diversification. Unlike a mutual fund, however, a UIT is not actively managed and does not change its holdings. And since no manager is involved in making changes or trades, a UIT has low management fees. A UIT is typically established for 20 to 30 years, but, as an individual investor, you can sell your shares whenever you want, for whatever the market will bear. Although UITs can be some of the most cost-efficient, low-risk options in the fixed-income arena, they are not without risk. Specifically, since a UIT’s bonds provide fixed interest rates, there’s always the possibility that the bonds will lose purchasing power to inflation over time. When choosing how to own bonds, you’ll need to evaluate many factors — and we’ve only looked at some of them. You may want to consult with a financial advisor to determine which methods of bond ownership are appropriate for your needs. By doing your homework, and getting the help you need, you can maximize the advantages of adding bonds to your investment mix.

What is your greatest success? I would have to say having the business double our gross income in the 1st year.
What do you have planned for your future?
At this point I would love to see the business get to the point it would almost run itself, which would then allow me to spend stress free time with my family. I also plan to continue to live day by day and love every minute of it.

A Letter from the President Let’s talk about the “Elephant in the room” Let’s talk about Loan Costs and Interest Rates Hopefully by now, you have heard enough feedback through friends, family, or testimonials in our advertisements that we provide the type of customer service you would expect from a local, honest and reputable lender. Spectacular service is a must for us. Fast responses to phone calls, questions, emails, and always being available is embedded in our culture. We don’t like to wait on hold with 1-800 numbers, be transferred to multiple individuals to have to repeat a story, etc., so we ensure you won’t have to either. You call and we answer, period. So this is what it comes down to…..
“Being a first time home buyer I had multiple questions. Plant City Mortgage took the time and patience to answer all my questions. They made the forms understandable to me and I left feeling confident in what I signed. Plant City Mortgage helped me make my home buying process smooth and painless” - Andrea Swilley
Our prospective clients know these things to be true if they have asked around, but who in their right mind would pay more for 30 years (higher interest rate) or more costs for a temporary convenience? Rich folks may, but most of us are not so wealthy that we can afford the extra conveniences, so we shop and compare quotes and prices on just about every large purchase we make. That is the financially responsible thing to do. So why would I welcome shopping? Because I am confident that we can meet or beat your best deal, end of story. The only difference is the personal accountability you will receive when working with us. I honestly have not had to tell a customer that we cannot provide better terms on a loan. So you have got to be thinking, how can Plant City Mortgage do this? How can they compete with the “big boys”? I mean we don’t even get bailout out money so how is that so? (Sorry had to do it) It comes down to this. Our method of getting money loaned out to the public is the least expensive cost distribution model available. You see, we only get paid a commission from the lender when we loan money. Our lenders have minimal overhead since they do not pay us a dime unless we loan funds. Other lenders have massive advertising budgets, huge fixed costs from payroll and buildings, etc. So, our lenders have less costs which allows them to offer lower interest rates. As you can see we are very transparent, and would love the opportunity to answer any questions that you may have about our services or to assist you with your next home purchase or refinance transaction. I sleep well at night and am certain that you will not be disappointed with our services. Sincerely, Nate Davis President Plant City Mortgage Corporation

“It all started when I got a letter in the mail from Nate Davis with Plant City Mortgage claiming that since I possessed an FHA Mortgage, I may be able to streamline my mortgage and obtain a lower intrest rate and therefore my mortgage payment. I was skeptical, but gave Nate a call to discuss. He was very knowledgeable and was able to clearly explain the details of it all to me. Nate’s staff were also wonderful to work with. Due to their diligence, I was able to close before the end of the month end and had no money out of pocket, my intrest rate and mortgage payment were lowered. I am please to recommend Plant City Mortgage to my family and friends. They are clearly one of the last few customer oriented business who makes their clients needs top priority. Thank you Plant City Mortgage Corp.” - Sharon L. Cardone

he Walden Lake Community Association Board Meetings are the third Monday of each month at 6:00 PM at the Walden Lake Homeowners Association office building on Griffin Boulevard in Walden Lake. The next meeting will be July 20th. The meetings are open to all Walden Lake residents.
HOA President Jan Griffin and Vice President Marcus Alexich attended the American Legion Memorial Day service and presented a wreath on behalf of the Walden Lake Community. You may have noticed that the HOA put flags around all the entrances, unfortunately once again, vandals decided to steal the flags which may prevent future displays of flags. The Homeowner’s Association office located on Griffin Boulevard. is collecting donations for the troops in conjunction with the Green Team through the end of June. Items requested are personal hygiene, snacks, stationery, magazines, etc. A list of suitable items is available on the website www.waldenlake.org or at the WLCA office. One item they are requesting is Beanie Babies, which the soldiers enjoy handing out to children. By this printing, you should have received the statement for your semi-annual dues. The HOA reminds you to please pay the dues upon receipt to prevent any additional fees that can occur by not paying in a timely manner. Occasionally I have a client that has missed their payment and are surprised by what they owe. Open your

mail, send a check and you won’t have any surprises later. The association has a Memorial Tree Program in place. If you are interested in being part of this program, you can contact Bette at the office, 813-754-8999 or via email at betteg@waldenlake.org for more information. There is a proposed plaque that will hang at the office for the memorial. The path between Polo Place Entrance and Trapnell Road has recently been repaved. I cannot remind you enough that you should always lock your car doors especially if they are left out overnight. Leaving your car unlocked is an open invitation for thieves to take what they want. Bette is maintaining the Walden Lake website and she is urging everyone to log on and register so you can get important messages and notices from the association. If you are having trouble logging on, contact Bette at the HOA office, 813-7548999 or via email at betteg@waldenlake. org and she will help you through the process. The website address is www. waldenlake.org. Next month, I will be reporting the real estate statistics in Walden Lake since January 1st. Please feel free to contact me on any specific information relating to the sales in the community by calling 813758-9586.

The Home of the Greener and Leaner Future A submitted By: jo-ann lusk
recent study conducted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) shows that while consumer hesitation on home buying is waning, the recent housing downturn has changed what Americans are looking for in their next home.
The survey research on consumer preferences, which is presented annually at the NAHB International Builders’ Show, suggests that the severity of the recession has left an indelible mark on prospective home buyers, who have shifted their perspective on the housing they want and need. Builders who were surveyed expect homes to average 2,152 square feet in 2015, 10% smaller than the average size of singlefamily homes started in the first three quarters of 2010. To save on square footage, the living room is high on the endangered list—52% of builders expect it to be merged with other spaces in the home by 2015 and 30% said it would vanish entirely. “As an overall share of total floor space, 54% of builders said the family room is likely to increase,” said Rose Quint, NAHB’s assistant vice president for survey research. “That makes it the only area of the home likely to get bigger.”
78
june 2011 focusplantcity.com
“In addition, the relative size of the entry foyer and dining room are likely to be diminished by 2015. However, opinions were fairly evenly divided on the fate of the kitchen, master bedroom and bath and mudroom,” said Quint. The average new home of 2015 is likely to feature a great room comprised of the kitchen, foyer and living room; a walk-in closet in the master bedroom; a laundry room; ceiling fans; a master bedroom on the first floor in homes with two stories; and a two-car garage. In addition to floor plan changes, 68% of builders surveyed say that homes in 2015 will also include more green features and technology, including low-E windows; engineered wood beams, joists or tresses; water-efficient features such as dual-flush toilets or low-flow faucets; and an Energy Star rating for the whole house. Thumbs Up for Energy Efficient Homes! They are already here in Plant City. Currently at least 2 Builders are developing communities with Energy Star rated homes. You can see these homes at Park Place on North Gordon Street and Walden Pointe at Mud Lake and Charlie Griffin Roads.

Zane Floyd recently completed 5th grade at Cork Elementary. At the end of second grade he was struggling academically, so his parents enrolled him at Huntington Learning Center to get him up to par. For the first time in his academic career, Zane made honor roll all four nine weeks in his fifth grade year, an achievement that can be tracked back to the successful turn around that began with Huntington’s help in 2008.

aving a hot streak is something you might expect from a team whose nickname means a “place of extreme heat.” And the Tampa Bay Inferno lived up to their name as they heated up at the right time and swept through the Spring Fling I at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. The tournament was a recent test of the Inferno’s basketball skill in an Amateur Athletic Union Super Regional event that served as a qualifier for the national tournament to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee at the end of the season. The Inferno is an elite girls team affiliated with the Youth Basketball Organization of America. They are not involved in a weekly league, but have selected twelve tournaments they will participate in from March to October. these girls, coaches the team. The Inferno is affiliated also with other Tampa Bay Inferno teams in other age groups. Many have been in existence for more than seven years. “We started this team last year,” said Wilkerson. “We still have five girls who are a part of our team that were with us when we first formed the Inferno. Last year, we added additional players as the season progressed. And this year, we added two more. Presently we have eleven girls. Four are from Plant City (Shayna Lawrence, Terra Brooks, Kaylynn Wilkerson, Tatiana Thompson) and the others are from Springhill, Wesley Chapel and the Tampa area.” The Inferno’s strategy when they first started was to challenge the girls. They played in tournaments against older girls, hoping the team would play up to
their competition. The plan obviously has worked. After winning less than half of their games last year, the Inferno has won every tournament they have entered this season. This summer they also plan to attend high school age camps held at colleges in Florida. The Spring Fling I began on Friday with pool play against the Coastal Georgia Comets. The Inferno led throughout the game, but the Comets rallied late and the final of 28-25 made the game look closer than it really was. The next opponent was the Florida Flames. The Inferno put them away early and cruised to a 51-16 victory. In the third pool game, the Orlando Blazers shot out to an early lead and twice led by 15 points. The Inferno fought back and was able to tie the game at the end of regulation before putting the Blazers away in overtime by a score of 35-32.
The Inferno was awarded the #1 seed at the beginning of bracket play and earned a first round bye. The Orlando Blazers survived their bracket play and once again were pitted against the Inferno. This time Wilkerson’s team defeated the Blazers handily by a score of 35-21. That set the stage for the Inferno to be matched up against the undefeated Next Level Hoops. In the championship game the Inferno gave their opponent their only defeat of the tournament as they claimed the Spring Fling I championship trophy. When the buzzer sounded, “The girls went crazy,” Wilkerson said proudly. “They were unbelievable. This was the first time we were dominant throughout an entire tournament. They were screaming and yelling and jumping up and down. It was unbelievable!”

sports » Baseball team of the month
2418 James L. Redman Pkwy., Plant City, FL (813) 757-0300 written By: Joe Bowles “Entering the season, that was a concern,” said Valdez. Last year it was pitching that kept us in the game. This year… whatever it was that triggered these boys to start hitting, I’m not sure. But they hit the ball.” Indeed they did. They raised their team batting average sixty-nine points over last year’s squad to a team best .294. Led by senior Brett Jones, who drove in 21 runs, hit five home runs and batted .397, and sophomore Tyler Danish who led the team with a .484 average while pounding out 15 doubles, the Cougars provided the offensive power to go along with their reputation on the mound.
Baseball Team of the month 2011 durant high school cougars I t was a good year for Butch Valdez, the head coach of the Durant High School baseball team. Not only was he recognized at the district, state, and national levels for his contributions in the classroom as the Physical Education Teacher of the Year, but his Cougars had their most successful run in the playoffs in ten years. Although the Cougars did not win the district season title, or the district tournament, they took their runner-up status and turned in an impressive run to the regional finals before falling to the Lakeland High School Dreadnaughts. By
the end of the season, the Cougars were arguably the best team in the district.
“It took us time to gel,” said Valdez. “We had to find the right mixture. We had a lot of talent but we hadn’t gelled properly yet. We knew what we had with Tyler (Danish) and with Brett ( Jones), and with Trey (Oest) but to be honest, I think it was the play of JC ( Johnny Coglianese) that solidified our team. He stepped up and took over when our senior catcher was hurt and really played beyond what we expected.” That cohesiveness produced a team that surprised most preseason predictions.
The most impressive development was the emergence of Emilio Ogando, the left-handed ace of the Cougars staff who entered the championship game against Lakeland with an ERA under 2.00 and sported a record of 8-1. Ogando was impressive all season long, providing consistency on the mound and a solid bat at the plate. He was joined on the mound by right-hander Trey Oest who pitched better than his 4-3 record, and provided the Cougars with run support batting close to .300 by season’s end.
In the first round of the district tournament, Durant knocked off East Bay 10-6 and then defeated a persistent Tampa Bay Tech squad 5-3 to set up a battle with Riverview for the tournament title. Unfortunately, Riverview defeated the Cougars 6-1. That did not mean that the Cougars’ season was over, however, because in district play, both the winner and the runner-up advance to the regional tournament. On May 3, Durant faced the District 5A-7 champion, the Springstead Eagles from Spring Hill. After dispensing of Springstead 2-0, the Cougars were pitted against Riverview once again in the regional semifinals. This time, however, Durant prevailed as they slipped by Riverview by a score of 6-4 advancing to the finals to be held May 13 at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. The Cougars’ season ended with a heartbreaking loss against Lakeland by a score of 4-2.
In the past, Durant has been known for producing quality pitching, but were not necessarily big run producers. foCUS Magazine Plant City june 2011

extra » al reuchel What I find so curious is that Hawking can so quickly eliminate the presence of a God because he can’t find proof there is a God. True. But can you provide me with any proof there isn’t a God. There you go again, Al. You can’t disprove a negative. It’s a never ending circle that leads us back to the beginning. And as long as Hawking can offer us an explanation of the beginning, there is no room for a God in his equation. In his book, Brief History of Time, Hawking quotes Einstein, who said it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason to develop a theory of everything. Problem is that theory, or the ones floating around don’t and can’t answer some of the most basic questions about our search for significance. Who programmed our brains to want to feel like our lives must have some purpose? My computer doesn’t ask me why it exists or what caused it to exist. It hasn’t asked me a single question ever. And who lit the match to start the big bang?
There is no God! Or is there? S Written By: Al Reuchel
o did you hear the big news? The most intelligent man in the world has declared that belief in a God is a fairy tale. Amazing stuff. I’d been waiting for years for someone to finally clear the air and set the rest of us straight. I’m talking about wheelchair-bound British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. You do have to respect a man whose only way of communicating is through a computer. He has spent his life thinking and thinking and theorizing about the origins
98
june 2011 focusplantcity.com
of all of us from the big bang to dark holes to anti-matter. His writings are brilliant because his explanations are fairly understandable. He has several websites and even has several TV specials on PBS and the Discovery Channel. Here’s what he said. “I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”
In his book, The Grand Design, he says there is no need for a creator to explain the existence of the universe. And since there is no absolute proof there is a God or an afterlife, science alone can provide us with the truth about how it all started and how it will all end. If you’ve read any of my articles you know I’m a believer. I don’t make apologies for it and I won’t shove it down your throat. My journey to that discovery of a God occurred at a difficult time in my life when I was 19. Within a span of just a few days I lost my best friend and my cousin and his fiancé in a car accident. I had my come to Jesus moment in a pew in front of Vernal Hagarud’s coffin. It hit me like a bolt of lightning and changed everything about me in an instant. Back to Hawking now.
And here’s the one that drives me nuts: If the universe and everything in it is constantly expanding then how is it that life, our bodies, animals and all living things did just the opposite and developed what appears to be an intelligent or ordered design from the sub-atomic level all the way out to the nearly infinite realm of millions of galaxies? I’ll leave you with this one thought. If this printed page represented the entire knowledge of the universe, what part of that page would represent what we know about it? I’m guessing it’s not much larger than the period at the end of this sentence. So Hawking is willing to dismiss this entire page of knowledge for his little period universe where God is just a myth and a coping mechanism? Now, who is being close-minded!

extra » derek maul She just finished a stint as Presbytery moderator (association of 90-some Tampa Bay congregations) and observed how some preachers appear to revel in any opportunity to sanction others, to chide, to rebuke and to slap wrists. Others seem to live for the chance to speak against something or other. It’s all so tiresome, and so contrary to the teachings of Jesus regarding our mission to advance the Kingdom of God. The Tower of Babel story tells how God observed the growing arrogance of people and decided to knock the self-promotion down a few notches. Christianity is often an entire landscape of such towers (even within one denomination), competing against one another and built, stone upon stone, out of an arrogance more interested in advancing personal agenda than introducing people to the Gospel of Jesus.
When Religion is Anti-Life I Written By: derek maul
’ve been wondering about The Church. Not my local congregation, or even Presbyterians as a whole (although my denomination does play a role in this discussion), but the whole ball of wax, The Church, in all of its varied configurations.
that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me.” ( John 17:20-23). Christianity as a religion works to the extent that it:
• introduces people to Jesus and facilitates Then there’s the larger issue of Christianity. Christ’s mission Religion is simply the structure we erect in order to frame out and to practice • heals the broken relationship between belief. Christianity emerged in response God and humanity to Christ. Christ pre-dated Christianity; Jesus defeated death before anyone • heals relationships between people organized a religion in his name. • invites, welcomes, restores, encourages, The point of Christianity is to worship loves… God and continue the plan Jesus set in motion. Jesus put it this way, via his Christianity does not work to the extent parting words during The Last Supper: that it: “My prayer is not for (my friends) alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father… I in them and you in me — so

• makes religious practice more central than God
• seeks to re-invent God in the image of people • discourages hard questions and honest dialog • is defined more by what it is against than what it is for • creates divisions between people of faith • becomes secondary to political agendas • condemns rather than invites • excludes where it should open doors… My wife, Rev. Rebekah Maul, makes this important distinction. “Unity is not the same as unanimity,” she pointed out in church recently; “we can be one in Christ without all having the same opinion when it comes to every single detail.”
Nowadays I write and speak about “The Life-Charged Life.” I believe it’s only by becoming a Follower of the Way of Jesus that we can begin to approach the richness and the vitality of the “life that is truly life”, the quality of life God created and specifically designed us to engage. Let’s not confuse NEW LIFE IN CHRIST with the Christianized Religiosity championed by so many zealots of codified and denominationalized religious law…. Did I say that out loud? Seriously, folks. Follow Jesus. Place your trust in Christ. Practice your faith in the way your conscience dictates. But please stop telling other people – who also love Jesus – that they are second-tier believers because they might not fit the membership requirements for your garden club or political party. Jesus didn’t die for your personal preferences. Jesus died so that, “by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again.” (The Message, John 3:16-17) Because of Love – DEREK (follow Derek’s meandering thoughts at derekmaul.wordpress.com)

A Car for the Ages B ack in the day, General Motors wanted your business as a car buyer for life. They introduced lines to cater to the taste of the driver: Pontiac, GMC and Buick. They marketed the Pontiac for younger drivers, GMC for middle aged drivers and the Buick for older drivers; each with discernable qualities. The problem was - GM held on to that business model too long. Combine this with some poor business decisions resulting in a cash “bail-out” by the U.S. Government, which since has been paid back in-full, and GM was finally forced to change. The Pontiac line has been discontinued. Now GM is trying to keep that from happening again. When you consider that the Buick line was originally marketed to older drivers,

New Buick Regal Appeals to a Broader Market submitted By: Brian West
you can really appreciate the 2011 Regal. The styling is first class. Sure, it still appeals to older drivers, but that market has broadened considerably. Ok, your high school graduate may have this on their wish list, but so do the 30 and 40somethings. This isn’t your father’s Buick. The 2011 Regal provides the luxury feel of a sedan, but the exterior lines and the oversized wheels really provide a sporty look. It’s sharp, and conservative. The lines give it the look of a European sedan and fit in nicely with the likes of Audi and Mercedes. It also competes well with the Japanese Acura. Under the hood, the 2011 Regal Turbo features a 2.0L ECOTEC 4-Cylinder Turbocharged Direct-Injection engine and
variable valve timing that delivers 220hp, which is more than ample to get these four wheels down the road of your choice. Although an automatic transmission will be easier to find, a 6-speed manual transmission is also available. Couple the 6-speed manual with the turbo and you can understand some of the appeal to younger drivers. And now you can get the Regal with eAssist Technology. It provides a significant increase in fuel efficiency, taking the Regal to 25mpg city and 35mpg highway; in a word, impressive. The interior has seating for five, although the three in the back must be mid-sized or small – children are probably best suited. As the driver, you’ll appreciate the ergonomically designed controls. Everything is right where you’d want
it. The power driver’s seat is 12-way adjustable, so there’s no excuse for lack of comfort. Buick has also introduced their class-exclusive interactive drive control system. It adjusts through three different driving modes: Standard, Sport and Tour. And yes, you can tell a difference. Overall, the Regal looks great, handles well and is priced competitively. This may be one of the best Buick products in recent memory. MSRP starts just below $30k and fully equipped is just over $40k. If you’re interested in the new Buick Regal, take one for a spin. But be careful -- you just might drive away in one!

Fred’s Southern Kitchen A
couple of months ago we took a trip to Fred’s Southern Kitchen in Lakeland and ate selections from the buffet like we would never be eating again (www.focuslakeland.com). Then we immersed your senses in a detailed report on our experience, and we hope you afterwards got a chance to check out one of their locations. This month, we went to the Plant City restaurant and enjoyed another fulfilling meal. Once again, we talked about the food all the way back to the FOCUS mobile. This time, though, we didn’t just go for the food - what we were most interested to see was the innovative program Fred’s is experimenting with - it’s as fresh an idea as their food is Southern. Fred’s has just introduced the Waste Not, Want Not program. “Prices of gas have gone up so much, and as a result a lot of restaurants are trying to raise their prices,” said Lauren Elmhorst, Director of Marketing for Fred’s. “But we don’t really want to have to do that, so what we’re doing is providing discounts to people who don’t create an excessive amount of waste.” That’s right, the rest is what you think it
108
june 2011 focusplantcity.com
is - simply don’t throw away a bunch of food, and you will actually see a discount on your bill. Sound like a good idea? It is - less waste equals less expense, which equals lower prices. And so far, people are glad to try the program. “We’re getting a positive response,” Elmhorst said.
How exactly is the program implemented? Fred’s wants patrons to know they are still free to do as they wish, since that’s why they pay to eat out. “We don’t want people to feel like they are being watched [in regards to the program]. People can make as many trips to the buffet as they like,” said Lauren. “If your waitress sees you didn’t pile up on food that wasn’t eaten (a large amount), the discount will automatically apply, and that’s it. We encourage our guests to enjoy as many dishes from our buffet as they desire, and we certainly don’t want people to feel like they have to finish every crumb. We are just helping them to be more conscious about the impact that food waste has on prices. We’re doing everything we can to not let our customers feel the brunt of rising food costs. We find our guests really appreciate this.”
Finds New Way to Keep Prices Low Written By: John Ross
Elmhorst thinks customers should be aware of a key principle that motivates the staff at all Johnson family restaurants: “At Fred’s we understand the importance and value of families eating together. We think about that in every decision we make. We see the Waste Not, Want Not program as a perfect way to partner with families to help their children learn to make healthy and responsible eating choices.” So, what kind of food will we be saving money on, exactly? Fred’s Southern Kitchen serves food you might expect at a Southern banquet. They stick with the basics and they do them right: Fried Chicken, seasoned and juicy; mashed potatoes with thick gravy; homemade macaroni and cheese which has just as much butter as it does cheese and many other major country staples like large warm buttered rolls, barbeque ribs, and corn bread. During our most recent trip, we tried, among a slew of other things, the Fried Green Tomatoes. They are sprinkled with batter and give a hint of tart. Both butter and cheese fight for your attention in the macaroni and cheese. The Italian style green beans are tender and also

entertainment » artist of the month standard or compare himself to others, Erikan defined himself through his paintings by pushing past any boundaries working outside the box. The more he painted, the freer he became in expressing his own unique authenticity. He is always being drawn to the core idea of his work, which is searching for the root of love. It is from this place of love and joy that Erikan continues to paint. Once again Erikan is experiencing another rebirth with his new restaurant, creating and discovering a new energy and new friends that he draws upon to create his artistic joy. Erikan is also finding inspiration to write what he calls a transformational journey reflected in words. If one were to visit Café Zuppina, you would find this love and joy reflected on the very walls of his restaurant in the form of a mural Erikan recently painted. I must warn you in advance that you will be tempted to try the wonderful food prepared fresh each day by the loving hands of his wife Berna.

ife is journey, not a destination. The same truth can be said of art. At times what may seem like a beginning may be an end and what may feel like an ending may be a beginning. For Plant City resident, business owner, and artist, Erikan Nar, life has offered many such endings that have resulted in new beginnings. Many of us over the years have come to know Erikan as the previous owner of the Subconscious that was located in downtown Plant City. He operated the shop along with his wife, Berna, who is an artist in her own right in regards to food preparation. Currently Erikan and his wife are operating a very successful Turkish restaurant in Lakeland known as Café Zuppina. What some may not know is that in addition to being a restaurateur, Erikan is also an artist. While growing up in Turkey, Erikan was influenced and drawn to fashion design and pursued studying textiles and the fashion industry in London. For a time

he worked for the number one fashion design company in Turkey, known as Vakko. Later in life, Erikan put aside his artistic pursuits in order to pursue a degree in Business Management, raise a family, and pursue other business endeavors. One such business opportunity brought him all the way to Plant City to live and raise a family. Interestingly enough, it was here in Plant City that Erikan rediscovered his passion for art. Inspired by the transformation in his life that was taking place by being in new surroundings, making new connections, and meeting new people, Erikan began to paint. Erikan’s paintings became expressions of joy and his love and connection to life. Not wanting to conform to some set
It is truly amazing to find that Plant City continues to be a source of inspiration to artists, offering us a wide array of art to enjoy and to be inspired by in our own life’s journey.
The Strawberry Classic Car Show, Plant City Bike Fest and many other downtown events surround this two story, 4000 sq ft, newly renovated (in 2005) commercial building in the historic district of Downtown Plant City. Rooted deep in the community, as it was once the town’s hospital, shoe store, restaurant and most recently the offices of Focus Magazine. This building has it all: exposed brick walls, a full service cafÊ with drive through window, completely wired with 16 data (cat 5) and phone jacks. Nothing was left untouched during renovation. This building has all new upgraded electric, plumbing, refurbished windows, drop ceiling, awning and paint. If you are looking for a building with character in a great location this one is for you.

days gone by, celebrate a birthday, have “girls night out” or to meet with colleagues for a retirement party. Recently Mrs. Milka Vargas celebrated her retirement with friends and staff from Plant City High School. Mrs. Evelyn Madonia, owner of the Red Rose inn and Suites, made the occasion “over the top” for Milka. Personalized menus with all inclusive prices were prepared for the group and the Red Rose Dining Room’s private photographer, Mr. David Wright, was there to capture the special moments. The retirement party was featured on the Red Rose Inn and Suites website. Mr. Wright made the pictures available for guests at no cost by e-mail. Milka says, “Singles Night Out is like going back to your young adult years when you danced the night away. Dancers are on the dance floor having a great time with or without dance partners. Everyone has a great time at Singles Night Out.” Starr and Scott Anderson enjoyed Singles Night Out. Starr said, “We had so much fun seeing friends, both single and as couples. We even saw our next door neighbors there. We are making plans to
go back and have another great time!” All age groups have fun eating, dancing and singing along at the Red Rose Dining Room’s Singles Night Out. Milka Vargas (with Retirement cake) 39 years in education Photo by: David Wright
