Letter From The Publisher

If you were to ask my staff to tell you some of the quotes I am known for repeating constantly, one they would definitely recite is “You’re never gonna hit the ball if you don’t swing the bat.” I’m not a fan of the word “can’t” because it means you gave up before you ever tried. Often times, when a challenge faces us, the simplest and easiest way to avoid it is to say it can’t be done. However, you miss the journey of trying, and more than likely, your endeavor would have succeeded with enough determination. Baseball is one of the few sports that rewards players for succeeding 3 of 10 times. A football wide receiver who only catches 3 of 10 passes would spend more time warming the bench than running plays. But in baseball, you’re having a good season if you can keep your batting average above 3.0. The funny thing is, I think life is much more like baseball statistics than other sports. Many people choose the comfortable, safe route avoiding the chance of failure. They never take risks because they would rather sit in the stands and avoid strikes and errors than step up to the plate with others watching their every move. If we were all to succeed at 3 of every 10 risks we took, it would still be worth carrying the bat to the plate and swinging hard every time the pitch felt right. When you read this month’s Spotlight interview, you will meet T.J. Messick, the Manager for the 9-10 year-old Little League team that won the Southeast Regional Title recently. One of his statements stood out to me when he talked about their approach to the post-season games. By the end of the season their record was 18-0 in postseason games. However, they did not began with the ultimate title in mind. Every game they played their hearts and minds were focused on the game at hand. They only took it one win at a time, and before they knew it, they were loading up on a bus headed for West Virginia. More often than not, we should be focusing on the baby steps rather than the audacious goal at the end of our path. The cover story for this month is one of my favorite we have ever featured in Focus Magazine. It represents everything that Focus, a local community magazine, stands for. A group of our boys, supported by our friends, families and businesses, fought for their dreams and went all the way, representing our town well. I don’t think we could be any prouder for the 22 boys written about in this month’s Spotlight interview. They were faced with challenges and obstacles, but never hesitated to give it their all.

Are there obstacles or challenges staring you in the face, but you’re afraid to take the risk? For some it may be weight-loss, pursuing a long time dream, planning for a financial goal, or jumping out of an airplane. There are infinite possibilities of the challenges we may have in front of us, with only our fears standing in our way. I hope after you read the inspirational story about these little boys this month, you’ll have the courage to walk up to the plate and swing the bat with all your strength.

Congratulations Darcy Stottlemyer and Jan Griffin Scholarship Winner’s to Teleflora’s “Sympathy Expression” Class Two Local Florist won scholarships for continuing education in Oklahoma City. Darcy Stottlemyer, Owner of All A Bloom Florist and designer Jan Griffin recently received a scholarship to Teleflora’s “Sympathy Expressions” class at the state of the art education center in Oklahoma City, Okla. Floral designers from all over the United States attended the four days of intensive hands–on classes, to learn the latest designs in casket sprays, baskets and easels. The classes were taught by renowned floral designer Wilton Hardy, AIFD PFCI AAF of Palm Beach, Fla. and were focused on discovering new ways to celebrate life in flowers. Expressing sympathy with flowers is a tradition thousands of years old, yet the students were challenged to reinvent these traditions with a modern flair using today’s materials. “We came away with new ideas, new techniques and new friends,” stated Darcy Stottlemyer. Both Stottlemyer and Griffin received certificates recognizing their completion of the course from Teleflora Education Center, now in its 27th year of providing intense hands-on design classes. All A Bloom is located in Historic Downtown Plant City.

umility is the thread that holds all successful non-profit organizations together. The founder of Everyday Heroes, USA, Phillip Mockler, exemplifies this character trait. Quick to smile and shake your hand, but reluctant to have his photo taken, Mockler gives all of himself and more to make this community a better place to live for thousands of military personnel, veterans, active or retired law enforcement, firefighters and their families. His brother, 15-year-old Chase Meyer said, “I am very excited for him, but I am also worried.” He is not the only one excited with some worry. His older brother Darryl Cox spoke to this pride and worry when he said, “This is a good thing. It is more than just a job. Bradley sees the big picture. We are still a little nervous.” His parents, Tami Corbiere and Jeff Meyer, also believe this entire army experience has been a positive one for him. n mid-September, Bradley Corbiere Meyer will pack his gear and head to Afghanistan.

After his 2010 graduation from Plant City High School, Meyer realized his desire was to be all that he could be in the Army. “I wanted to do something different,” he said. After a little over a year of service, he hasn’t regretted that decision one bit. In fact, Meyer has given his 110 percent since boot camp. Stationed at Fort Bragg in the 82nd Airborne, he has impressed his Captain and many others. Meyer scored one of the top scores on his ASVAB test and has earned the respect of authorities in every assignment he’s been asked to do. In fact, in his 12-to-14-hour-aday trainings, he was selected to train E-5 sergeants. The high achievement on the ASVAB test will also help his application for Warrant Officer

Meyer is currently a Private First Class E-3 and will soon be an E-4, a classification normally earned in two years. Meyer, however, will have the designation much earlier. With all of his accomplishments, it is no wonder his superiors know he will be a huge asset during his deployment to Afghanistan. While there he will perform his duties in 12-hour shifts as an Aviation Operation Specialist at the guarded compound of Kandahar Air Base. His job will be to handle air mission requests (A.M.R.), which involves preparing and providing flight plans for air and ground crews. When asked how he feels about going to Afghanistan, Meyer responded that he is “excited to see the different cultures.” His proud family hosted a deployment party in his honor recently at the Home Place Barn in Dover. As September approaches the family would like for you to keep him, along with all the other soldiers, in your prayers for their safe return home. We also thank Bradley Meyer with a salute for his bravery to stand up for America and represent his hometown so well.

One Community, Helping One Dollar One Store at a Time “I Writtene By: Alyssa Ricardo

wanted to start a dollar thrift store,” said Cathy Walker, longtime volunteer at the United Food Bank of Plant City and the owner of Helping Hands Thrift Store. “Plant City is not a rich place, so I knew I had to start here.” she continued.

Walker had been volunteering for about eight years at the food bank, conveniently located next to what would eventually become her thrift store, when she was stuck with her groundbreaking notion. “I was shopping in Dollar Tree when suddenly I thought, ‘Dollar Tree, thrift store...’ and I knew I needed to put them together!” laughed Walker. Glover, 46, didn’t feel qualified to succeed Rashad Woods, who established GQ at Marshall in 2007, but he was game to try. He credits “being raised in a loving home with both parents” for his drive to help boys learn success keys. He adds, “Not a perfect home with a white picket fence, just one where the mother determined her son would be a leader.” An uncle who recites inspirational quotes and poems “that make you stop in your tracks to listen” is another influencer. His Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Bethune-Cookman also taught Glover “brotherhood, leadership, and respect for all mankind.” The club most boys hope to join consists of 45-50 young men selected through application and interview with co-advisers Jeff Dimapasoc, Rebecca Velasquez, and

Their Wednesday meetings are a safe place where members experience accountability for education, goal-setting, problem-solving, compromise, anger management, kindness and respect. They learn by doing. Marshall’s motto is: “Every student, every day … college bound.” Principal Daphne Blanton couldn’t be more pleased with the Gentlemen’s Quest effect at the AVID Demonstration School. She said, “We can never do too much for our kids. The leadership experience, social skills, and level of pride developed in GQ positively impact every aspect of their future.” Blanton expects “ambassadors” from the group to become pillars in their larger communities. “Looking Back: Through Tin Pan Alley” Performance Scheduled for October A written by: Cheryl Johnston

l Cohen enjoys helping military veterans and seniors reminisce through musical entertainment. No doubt, local audiences agree.

Cohen is known for the shows he directs in eastern Hillsborough County. The most recent musical review, “Looking Back,” was staged in mid-July at The Bridges in Riverview. The upcoming event, “Looking Back: Tin Pan Alley,” is scheduled for October 21-22 in Plant City. Cohen is auditioning potential performers now. Not only does the 84-year-old Cohen enjoy this work, but he is highly qualified through prior experience. Through the years he has directed and produced plays and while in Alabama did casting for Columbia Pictures, specifically for the films Close Encounter of the Third Kind, and Under Siege. For five years, he and his son Garry also published a newspaper, “Entertainment Mobile.”

In describing the joy this work brings him now, Cohen offered, “If even one person feels a little bit better after having seen my show, then my show was a success.” Because he focuses on the music of Broadway and the decades of the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s, Cohen has become accustomed to seeing tears and big smiles on the faces in the audience. He likes to recall special memories for our senior citizens and help them remember a nostalgic time in their lives. Birthday Girl Gives the Plant City High School Senior celebrates Gift of Life in a unique way B written By: Catie Walker

irthdays are a time for celebrating the life of an individual, which usually involves parties, cake, and presents. Plant City High Senior, Isis Ash, will celebrate her 17th birthday with a donor party at Florida Blood service in Plant City. Ash is giving, rather than receiving, on her big day, by asking friends and family to give the gift of life instead of presents.

Ash has been donating blood at Florida Blood services for a year. She was discouraged to discover there were few donors. “I found out there were only 134 blood donors last month. So, for my birthday I made it a goal to double that number,” Ash said with a smile. She has worked diligently to spread the word about her birthday celebration, “I’ve been texting and Facebooking my friends and trying to get my school involved.” Ash aspires to be like her grandmother, Julie Holerook, who is a lifelong blood donor. “Why not? You have the ability to help others and it doesn’t cost you

anything. One donation can save a life,” Ash explained. The Florida Blood Services organization is thankful to have students show interest in donating. One staffer remarked, “We appreciate Isis as a young volunteer. Most of our volunteers are in their mid 30s.” Ash’s inspiration, Holerook, has been a blood donor since her early 20s, giving about four times a year. Today, she prepares to donate platelets for the first time. Platelets are used in therapy for patients who undergo chemotherapy or organ transplants to boost their immune system. Holerook began donating at an early age because of her rare blood type. The act of donating has grown even more meaningful to her over her lifetime. “When you get older, you start to think about these things,” she joked. Holerook shows her support by celebrating and giving the gift of life with her granddaughter. “It’s really exciting that she is encouraging her friends to be lifelong donors,” she said. Ash hopes to create more awareness

Glen Nash - MTC Artist

The New “Through My Eyes” An Amazing Exhibit of Creativity, Talent Art Gallery and Community! O Written By: April Haynes

n July 21st the Macdonald Training Center and the Westshore Alliance Leadership Class proudly opened the doors of their new Art Gallery. Here individuals with disabilities can show their talent and display beautiful works of art.

MTC’s mission is “to empower individuals with disabilities to live the lives they choose.” This gallery gives the artists a chance to express themselves and build self-confidence. Many who have trouble communicating can now “speak” through their art. On the opening night, the artists’ sense of success was apparent as numerous pieces were sold to individual collectors. Cheryl Hallett expressed how moved she was as she purchased a painting entitled “Rhino Time” by Paul Woodman for her grandson. This very detailed work depicts a rhinoceros almost dancing on the canvas. “I consider myself an amateur artist. I know how hard it is, and I can’t create this kind of art,” she said. It was obvious to the Westshore Alliance

26

that this year’s legacy project should be for the artists at the MTC. A real need existed - a permanent place to display their art; 19 people brought it all together. Through the sacrifice of time and hard work, they received more than $40,000 in donations, including the wooden floors and track lighting. In this marvelous new space, the artists can show off their talent and creativity to illustrate people dancing, places you can only see in your dreams, and all things of unimaginable beauty in lovely arrays of color and style.

Glen Nash, a featured artist, could not pick a favorite. He loves them all! Those who know him well will tell you he’s partial to “The Lady in Black,” a work on loan from a private collection. Nash was chosen as one of “10 Creative People to Watch in 2010” by the St. Petersburg Times. His talent was displayed on almost every wall. Other artists included Omoro S. Ralls, Mike Albriton, Chris McDarby, Ed Shaw, John Quinines, Nena Cogswell, and Krishna Gonzales, just to name a few. Beautifully, their works exhibited strong feelings through vivid colors.

Senior Fun Fest and Jamboree One of many events held at the Strawberry Festival Grounds written By: Deana Garrison

T

he Senior Fun Fest and Jamboree, produced by Senior Connection Magazine, was held June 30, 2010 at the Strawberry Festival Expo Building. The magazine’s owner, Kathy Beck, established the free and exciting event for senior citizens 20 years ago. Today, this event can be found all around Florida’s west coast. Beck says it’s great to see the same faces continue to come back. Lots of laughter and music filled the air as many seniors enjoyed dancing, mingling, playing bingo, eating, and stopping to meet exhibitors. Each person received a huge Humana bag to collect information and goodies from event advertisers. In the last hour, everyone gathered around the stage to hear the winners of the free raffle, which included a trip to Georgia, four passes to Busch Gardens, and a grand prize trip to Biloxi, Mississippi. Wanda Tinsdale was the big winner. This was the Festival’s third time to host the Jamboree and Fun Fest, and it won’t end there. According to Beck, another one is scheduled for December at the

Strawberry Festival Expo building. This is just one of many events held here throughout the year. Paul Davis, Festival General Manager said, “Many events help our business community. The Cougar Invitational was one event that brought so many people that hotels were busy and restaurants were packed.” Next on the list is the New Teacher Orientation for beginning teachers of Hillsborough County, scheduled for August 18. In October, the public is invited to the Tampa Bay Mineral and Science Show. The Expo Building holds many private events as well. The Evelyn and Batista Madonia Multipurpose Building, now under construction, is another large-venue facility for all kinds of events. Call 813-752-9194 or e-mail Roxanne@flstrawberryfestival. com for more information if you are looking to host an event.

David Smith maintains 800 hives around Central Florida

The Bee Man D avid Smith’s hobby of beekeeping for the last nine years has now become his career.

Smith has been a tile layer for 26 years, work he enjoyed and that provided a good living for his family. As the economy began to affect his business, he began to devote more time to the hobby and in the process it has blossomed into a new livelihood. Today, the “Bee Man” is a commercial beekeeper and owner/operator of Smith’s Apiaries. He maintains 800 hives mostly by himself. These are located all over Florida in towns like Silver Springs, Kissimmee, Plant City, Lithia, and even some in Manatee County. Smith sets up beehives to help local farmers get the pollination needed for the development of strawberries, watermelon, blueberries and cantaloupe crops. Pollination is the process of pollen being transferred into the plants allowing fertilization. This is the work of the bees. It is beneficial in agriculture because a productive crop is dependent on the

fertilization. As he educates his customers, Smith explained, “Farmers are now seeing the advantage of the bees, and will keep doing their spraying at night.” The hives are movable because Smith uses square or rectangular frames so he can extract the honey without harming the bees. The frames allow the hives to be moved into whatever area is necessary in order to help with the crops. Smith said, “My nights are filled with moving the hives to new locations. Usually in the fall and spring, I move bees up to six times a year.” As an added bonus, Smith’s Apiaries has fine honey available in sizes ranging from 12-ounce angels to 55-gallon drums. He bottles the honey at Rick’s Meat Market, where customers can also purchase it. Beeswax is also available here, too. To experience the health benefits of honey or to learn more about how bees can pollinate your farm crops, contact David Smith at 813-967-7405.

ast year Dr. Will Longabach and his then 8-year-old daughter Mariah set up a temporary dental clinic in Africa. The nine-day experience affected them so much they’re heading back this October. The Longabachs traveled with a team from Plant City Church of God on a two-fold mission: to build trusses for an open-air pavilion and to provide dental care for the approximately 100 children at Life Spring Christian Academy Orphanage. They also delivered a pair of shoes to each child.

Only 20% have electricity and 50 shacks share one latrine, which is eventually emptied into the polluted river by young boys. The only medical providers are charitable organizations and churches. The Taylors have always had a motto: “We live to give - to give encouragement and to be the helping hands of Christ.” The ministry started when the Taylors took food in their 1989 Camry to share with migrant families each week. After Cynthia worked for Cahill Ministries Food Bank in Lakeland, she learned the most effective ways to help people. Jerry’s work as a produce hauler often provided extra food to share. He parked the truck at their church, The River of Tampa Bay, and began to do outreaches in outreaches California, Indiana, Michigan, Montana, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Mexico.

Taylor Outreach Ministries Food and Faith Enough to Help Those in Need J

erry and Cynthia Taylor have always shared food with those in need of kindness. Today, through Taylor Outreach Ministries, they do that and more.

They established their 501(c)3 corporation more than 10 years ago after God

impressed Jerry to “feed the hungry and clothe the naked.“ When he told Cynthia, she shook her head in disbelief because they had only $30 a week to feed their own family. But soon, God confirmed that He would make a way if they would trust.

The Outreach Center is open specific hours for specific groups: Mondays- Emergency food boxes (one time basis) by advance appointment; Tuesdays- Approximately 75 non-profit groups pick up palettes. Wednesdays - Substantially discounted, designated donation items are available to seniors (50-plus) from 9 -1; and Thursdays- Folks aged 50-and-under from 9-1. Anyone can visit from 2-6 p.m. on Fridays.

The ministry donates to other non-profits and does monthly “free food giveaways” in conjunction with other efforts. Donations are always appreciated. Publix donations account for 85% of the inventory. Panera Bread and Pastor Johnny Strickland also donate regularly. During winter holidays when many more have need, local businesses contribute money for turkeys. Cynthia administrates, while Jerry drives the truck and coordinates outof-town events. But the work wouldn’t be accomplished without invaluable volunteers who sort shipments, stock shelves, clean, assist clients. Some work for community service hours and others just to serve. The Taylors especially appreciate the faithfulness of Joyce Monson, Donie Brown, Lela Agard, and Pastors Elvia and Jose Perez. From experiencing some hard times and rough places themselves, the Taylors know prayer works. Jerry acknowledged, “God has always taken care of us. Taking care of others is the least we can do for Him.” In order to serve more clients and charitable groups, the ministry desires to purchase its own building, preferably one with a loading dock. Perhaps a local company will offer donated equity as a tax write-off. To offer suggestions, visit the store at 611 W. Dr. MLK, Jr. Blvd in Plant City or phone 813-381-7358.

Local » did you know Johnny Knotts is proud of the way his business treats people, admitting that very rarely does he receive complaints. The large customer base lets him know that “the theory of treating people well is still successful”. He believes in the old truth, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” something he has applied to operating the hardware store. For example, to this day Knotts continues to run in-house accounts extending credit to customers, a staple of the hardware store that Ben Knotts entrepreneurially brought to fruition in the 1930s. “It’s still my grandfather’s store,” Johnny Knotts said, reiterating that he has kept what his grandfather started and he continues to provide goods and services and quality care to customers who come in to his shop.

Knotts Hardware & Supply: A Customer-Driven Business O submitted By: Plant City Photo Archives & History Center

n South Collins Street, near downtown Plant City, lies Knotts Hardware & Supply. The business began in 1934 after Ben F. Knotts, grandfather of Johnny Knotts (current owner), migrated from North Carolina to Plant City, Florida, in search of opportunity during the Great Depression. His ambition to start the hardware store was influenced by his cousin who worked with him at a general mercantile store when Mr. Knotts first arrived in town. Not too long later, Ben purchased the property on which Knotts Hardware currently stands. Johnny Knotts remembers his grandfather Ben as being “such a hard worker”. He reminisced about his grandfather, whom he called “Pop,” being gracious and always able to fix anything. In addition, Ben Knotts became involved in the Plant City community while in business. For example, Ben F. Knotts served as a director of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association.

The Knotts store was originally set up as “a ‘trading and supply’ company, which also offered ‘blacksmith services’. During the early days, Knotts Hardware would personally service oil heaters. An example of this era of the store’s history can be seen in a photograph preserved at the Plant City Photo Archives & History Center which shows the front of Knotts in 1949, with signage reading “Knotts Trading Post: Hardware, Furniture, Farm Implements.” In the 1950s and 1960s, the company became dedicated to supply industrial goods. In the mid-1980s, Knotts changed its focus to supporting the everyday consumerretail market. Knotts Hardware also played a role in the success story of another business, one that grew its market to include the entire United States. According to Remembering Plant City: Tales from the Winter Strawberry

Capital of the World, a man by the name of D. Herman Kennedy entered Knotts Hardware in 1943 looking for some “credit and a source of supplies and equipment” to get him started with his frozen food operation in town (p. 85). Mr. Kennedy went on to work for and eventually run Southland Frozen Foods, Inc., a corporation specializing in the processing, freezing, and packaging of vegetables.

Ben’s hard work and determination inspired Billy Knotts, Ben’s son, to take over the operations of the Knotts store after his father. Billy had two sons, Andy and Johnny, who grew up wanting to be college football coaches. Johnny personally admits he was the least likely to run Knotts Hardware. After moving back to Plant City in 1987 with valuable experience as “regional Sales Manager for Spicola Hardware and Wholesale,” Johnny took the reins of the family hardware store. Johnny, an avid racing enthusiast who is involved as a pit marshal in the American Le Mans Series, gives his grandfather all the credit for developing the loyal customer base. Johnny Knotts spoke modestly of his own contributions to the hardware store, remarking “we’ve kept the ship going”. The main motivational force behind the store today is to preserve what Ben originally created. This includes preserving the ambience of Knotts Hardware by maintaining the aesthetic, old-fashioned barn look and keeping traditional business equipment, such as rotary phones and hand-written tickets, to the extent that when a customer walks in, he/she thinks “Wow, this is how it is supposed to be, or this is how it used to be.” To this end, the store continues to focus on providing outstanding customer service. Johnny expressed in an interview that “What makes our store is ‘Good morning, can we help you?’”. Following the

friendly greeting, the store is service-oriented in ways that big box competitors can never be. For instance, customers can obtain Johnny’s cell number and make a call inquiring about a product or service in the middle of the night, and Knotts Hardware will open to provide for those needs. Another aspect of the store that makes the customer feel gratified is Knotts’s dog, visible upon entering the premises, demonstrating that the store is a homey, family-friendly shop. This customerdriven mentality goes back to Ben’s philosophy of treating all people in a courteous and accommodating manner. Although the hardware store continues to adhere to the look and feel of the past, it has experienced many renovations over the years. The building which is home to Knotts Hardware & Supply was originally a pole barn. After a while, siding was added and stucco was affixed. Later a metal roof was installed. Five to ten years ago, the front was redone, leaving it with the red barn quality finish that is present today. The best selling items are Richard’s Paint, assorted nuts and bolts, and plumbing and electrical equipment. Despite the introduction of big box hardwareoriented stores in Plant City, Knotts has grown its business. In a 2009 article featuring Knotts Hardware in In The Field magazine, Johnny Knotts stated that one of the two best years he’s had was “the year Lowe’s opened”. However, over the past three to four years, because of the slow economy, Knotts has had to streamline down to a convenience store of hardware. The Plant City community has supported Knotts through tough times before, and its dedication to the hardware store is keeping the business going, even as Knotts adapts to changing market conditions.

Johnny recalls going through a time in his life when money meant everything, but all that changed on December 7, 2007, when Jordan “Booka” Hays, a 9-year-old boy, was “crushed beneath the wheels of a church float while helping distribute candy during the Plant City Christmas Parade”. The tragic accident happened as the parade was moving in front of Knotts Hardware, and Johnny Knotts was one of the first responders. Johnny Knotts has truly helped console the family by having his store participate as a collection site for “Jordan’s Wish, a toy drive to provide Christmas gifts for needy children,” and by organizing a dinner at Knotts Hardware & Supply a year after the death of Jordan Hays, inviting 25-30 family members of the boy and providing a sense of closure to those who knew the child. That horrific event and aftermath changed Johnny Knotts, who recalls one of the happiest moments of his life being when the father of the Jordan Hays personally thanked him for supporting the family at such a difficult time. In summary, Knotts Hardware and Supply has supported three entire generations of the Knotts family. Two great employees that Johnny Knotts personally wants to thank are Brittney Geil and Chuck Campbell. Brittney kept the store organized for many years, especially during transition phases, while Chuck has been an employee of Knotts Hardware for 21 years. Both have a great work ethic and an outgoing personality. Johnny Knotts is thankful that the people of Plant City have been faithful and loyal over the years to all three Knotts generations. He loves the fact that his store continues to function as his grandfather envisioned, always putting the consumer first. Sources: Gott, Gilbert (2007). Grand Opening of New Therapy Gym Coming Soon

stablished in 1963, the Community Care Center in Plant City is a skilled nursing facility with 120 beds, specializing in short term rehab as well as long term care. Many people assume this facility is strictly a nursing home; however, they are dedicated to rehabilitation services to help anyone get back to recovery. In the event a person needs more help and just cannot live an independent life, long term care is an option. To help their residents achieve the highest quality of care, CCC has been undergoing many renovations throughout the year. One big major change is the gym where all of their therapy needs are met. Much excitement is in the air as the completion of the new gym approaches in mid September. Currently operating in a 900 square foot room, it is a very tight squeeze for the therapists to get their patents in to work on the exercises they need. Reginald Eldridge, Administrator of the center said, “They try to do a lot in this little area. The new gym will

be a big improvement,”. Indeed it will. With a new room size of 2,000 square feet and brand new Nautilus equipment, the therapists at CCC will find much enjoyment helping their patients with more space. Many more patients will be able to utilize this gym at the same time and with ease. An added feature to the gym is a therapy kitchen to help those that need the occupational therapy to relearn the daily activities of life that at one time seemed to come naturally. The Center has put much thought into the needs of their residents. The patio directly outside the gym is another scenic place therapy can continue. The beautiful gardens are well kept by residents who use this as their therapy. One garden, positioned in a garden box high above the ground is kept by a resident that cannot bend down to work on his “therapy garden”. This shows just how passionate the Care Center is toward its residents.

T

he Plant City Towers and Plant City Living center are both non-denominational rental communities with a combined total of 116 apartment homes designed to provide housing for very low income elderly. Both are owned and operated by the First Baptist Church of Plant City, a non-profit corporation operating under the rules and regulations of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). To qualify for one of these apartment homes, applicants must be 62 or older and have an annual income that doesn’t exceed $19,800. The rent is adjusted to fit each individuals budget. Recognized last year as a “National Community of Quality” by the National Affordable Housing Management Association (NAHMA), both centers have set standards very high to provide the highest quality atmosphere for a very healthy home environment. This award is a notable recognition that only a select few are awarded. Lots of hard work and dedication is what it took to reach this high level of recognition. Although these centers are for the elderly that can lead independent lives, both have a full time in-house Service Coordinator who provides supportive services such as transportation to

nearby businesses, nutritional and exercise programs, resident activities, seminars, and parties. They also offer help for optional subsidized meals and housekeeping. Each apartment is a one bedroom one bath, carpeted unit equipped with energy saving appliances, vertical blinds, heating and air conditioning, smoke detectors, interior fire sprinklers, storage closet, and an emergency pull cord for added safety. The facilities also have a community room, laundry room, library, selfservice elevators, and a patio for a relaxed and convenient environment. Small pets are also welcomed in these facilities. Jeanne Anne Ratliff has been the administrator of both facilities for 12 years and has enjoyed helping senior citizens qualify for the affordable housing they deserve. Ratliff goes above and beyond her duties to ensure a happy healthy environment for all residents. If you take a tour of either facility you will find a relaxed home environment with puzzle pieces on the table tops of the community room, people watching the flat screen television in the lobby, some having friendly conversations with companions, and some just enjoying a nice cup of coffee and the

company of others. In the hallways you can see that each person is allowed to be themselves. Some doors are decorated with beautiful wreaths and decorations. Each elevator opens to a beautiful area with its very own decor to help residents identify what floor they are on. Everything is carefully

eing a champion is what every Little Leaguer dreams about and few will ever experience. Two all-star teams from Plant City, however, got to experience their dream as Plant City’s 9-10 year-old team and Plant City’s 10-11 year-old team became state champions, mowing down their opposition in District 4 and Section 4 before claiming state titles in Pinellas Park and Bonita Springs, respectively. As far as we know, never before have two teams from the same Little League park won their respective state championships in the same year until both Plant City teams took care of business by capturing 13 victories each without a defeat in all-star competition. Plant City’s 9-10 year-old Florida State champions include: Connor Rogers, Hunter Emerine, Braxton Plunk, Andrew Long, Parker Messick, J.J. Gonzalez, Ben Pues, Dylan Robinson, Cade Shissler, Bryar Christian, and Mykel Oyola. The manager is T.J. Messick and coaches are Casey Christian and Brian Plunk. Plant City’s 10-11 year-old Florida State champions include: Benji Hidalgo, Chase Schneider, CJ Kirkland, Matt Byars, T.J. Gayner, Austin Eldridge, Tate Whatley, Cody Ginther, Hunter Maxwell, Joe Merrin, Zack Ford, and Christian Laird. The manager is Steve Schneider and coaches are Tate Whatley and Dave Byars. Until a few years ago, a state championship was as far as younger teams could advance until the Little League sanctioned regional tournaments called the Tournament of State Champions. Both Plant City teams were able to compete against state champions from Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. The 9-10 year-old team went undefeated and captured the Southeast Regional title. The 10-11 year-old team represented Florida well, but lost by one run in a heartbreaker that prevented them from advancing to the semifinals.

Focus: Why did you load the bases? Steve: Well, we played them earlier in pool play so we knew the players, and we knew they were a good team. The first time we played them, Cody Ginther pitched a complete game and struck out the last batter on the final pitch of his pitch count. This time, North Springs had runners on second and third, so we intentionally walked their best hitter to load the bases and create a force situation. Our starter Austin Eldridge pitched a great game, but he was at the end of his pitch count limit so we were forced to take him out. We brought in T.J. and he struck out three batters with just 12 pitches. T.J.: For us, it was so unbelievable because when we first started, we were just trying to win our first district game and then get one win at a time. We just kept winning and before we knew it, we were already to play the championship game. In the finals, we played a Cape Coral team too. Like us, they were undefeated and looking at their size and pitching talent, we felt like the underdogs. But our boys hit the ball hard and it was really impressive the way the kids pulled though. The excitement when we won that final game was almost euphoric for our boys, our families, and all of our friends who attended. It was especially exciting for me to be the coach of a team that accomplished so much. I believe this was the first 9-10 year-old team from Plant City to win a state championship. I believe that is true for Steve’s team as well. They are also the first 10-11 year-old team from Plant City to win the state championship. Focus: So, after the state championship where did you go? Steve: Well, we were invited to play in the Tournament of State Champions, that we call the Southeast Regional, held in Greenville, North Carolina.

Focus Magazine spoke with both team managers, Steve Schneider and T.J. Messick, the day following their return from the Southeast Regional Tournament. Focus: The first thing I want to ask you is probably what everyone wants to ask, what did it feel like to become state champions?

T.J.: We were also invited to the Tournament of State Champions. Our tournament was held at Mitch Stadium in Ceredo-Kenova, West Virginia.

Steve: It was special to watch these boys play like they’ve played. For me personally, it was special because my dad was there. He gave me a big hug and said, “We’ve been waiting thirty-some years to see something like this.” In our final game against North Springs Little League from Cape Coral, we purposely walked the bases loaded in the last inning. T.J. Gayner was called on, and he struck out the side as we held on to win 2-1. That was pretty dramatic.

T.J.: The treasurer of our league is a guy named Steve Shissler. He is an unbelievable organizer. He is an information person that really gets the ball rolling and he worked hand-in-hand with Steve and me. You see, when we both won our state tournaments, we had to get moving quickly to get enough funds or we wouldn’t be able to go. Between our two teams, in four days we were able to raise almost $25,000. We did two hat drops at Fred’s Market and Johnson’s Barbeque and we also did a lunch fundraiser at Carrabba’s. We split what came in evenly between our two teams. We also got personal donations from family members and area businesses.

52

august 2011 focusplantcity.com

Focus:So the next important question, how did your teams get the money to go out of state to play these games?

Steve: I got checks from companies in Tampa, Lakeland, Plant City, Mulberry, and Bartow. We got money from players’ family members, grandparents, relatives, friends, customers of grandparents and parents, and people we grew up with in church. People sometimes donated to both teams. It was a very humbling experience to see all the support in such a short amount of time. It was a phenomenal trip, but it wasn’t cheap. T.J.: And we didn’t have much time to raise the money. When we got back home, we started making phone calls. For us, we got lucky. Dylan Robinson’s grandfather is Larry Robinson. He’s a National Hockey League Hall of Famer, nine-time Stanley Cup winner, and he’s currently a coach for the New Jersey Devils. We had to travel to West Virginia with 50 or 60 people. So, he chartered a luxury bus for us and paid for the whole thing. That man was unbelievable, the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet. Focus: So, you’ve arrived. How were the kids? Were they pretty well behaved?

were wrong. When we got to the Southern Regional, not only were the kids throwing breaking pitches, they were throwing a lot of them and were throwing them for strikes. I was shocked to see that many breaking pitches. I don’t agree with it. I think you have to protect their arms at this age and I just saw two many curve balls. We faced Tennessee in the first game and we lost that game 7-1. The second game was against Georgia. We won that game 5-4. The last game was against South Carolina to determine who would go to the semifinals. We were down 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning. Then Zack Ford got a base hit up the middle, Austin Eldridge came up and put one out of the ballpark and we were tied at 2-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning, South Carolina scored the winning run from third base on an infield hit. Focus: T.J., the only game you seemed to struggle with was the semifinal game against Georgia when they put up four runs that first inning. What happened there?

T.J.: Well, we made some mistakes that game in the first couple of innings, but we just kept getting base hits. We finally tied it up in the third inning. In the top of the fourth, we scored three more on hits by Hunter Emerine, Connor Rogers, and Ben Pues. In the next inning, we load the bases and Ben hit a grand slam homerun to centerfield. That really charged our boys up. T.J.: My group was the same. We had the same kind of compliments, at every level, from Braxton Plunk got a triple in the sixth and scored on a passed ball and by the time the umpires to tournament officials. They all said how respectful the kids were. We never had game ended, it was 13-5. Dylan Robinson pitched five innings and Parker Messick any issues as far as someone getting out of line. The people at the motel complimented closed out the game in the final inning. Really though, the boys never got down on us. The bus driver complimented us. We didn’t have any parent problems and we didn’t themselves. They knew the kind of offense they had, so, being down 4-0 really didn’t have any player issues. worry them too much. Steve: This group of kids was one of the best groups I have ever coached - both attitude wise and discipline wise. We got multiple compliments all through districts and the state tournament about our kids. This group never complained. There was no “me” on this team.

Focus: Steve talked about their state championship game. Talk about yours.

Focus: Tell me about the championship run?

T.J.: That game against Cape Coral was awesome. Even though we won 7-2, it could have gotten ugly for us. Defensively we kept their base runner from crossing home plate. We made the plays we had to make and we really didn’t make that many mistakes. I give credit to our defense and our pitching as two reasons why we won every game. From the first district game to the finals of the Southeast Regional, we were undefeated with a record of 18-0.

T.J.: In game one, we faced North Carolina. They were a very good team, but we just hit the ball a little better and we won 7-3. In the second game, we played Virginia and jumped out to an 8-0 lead, and then they shut us down while they kept chipping away at our lead. We won that game 8-7. That afternoon we ended up playing South Carolina. We were losing 6-0 at one point, but we came back and blew the game open in the last two innings scoring 17 more runs. We set tournament records for most runs in a game (23) and most hits in a game (21). The final game was against Virginia again. We scored two runs in the first on errors, and we really didn’t get anything going until the fifth when J.J. Gonzales drove in a run with a hit. The Virginia coach had a good game plan for us. He knew that we thrived on fastballs, so he pitched a lefty against us who was throwing slow. Our guys were impatient at the plate, and we had a hard time hitting the ball. But we won 3-1 and after the game, the kids went crazy. They were piling on one another. I couldn’t believe it!

Focus: I know that both teams won state tournament titles, but I understand that the 10-11’s fell a little short in the Southeast Regional. Steve, do you want to fill me in on that experience? Steve: Knowing what we know now, we might have changed a few things. Tate and I coached our kids to look for the fastball. Don’t swing at a breaking ball, because kids this age may throw one breaking pitch for a strike but not two or three per batter. But we

In fact, your remarriage should cause you to take a close look at these areas:

and comprehensive for you, your spouse and any dependents. You may also want to review disability insurance to ensure appropriate coverage is in place. Also, review life insurance policies and update beneficiaries and coverage. Income taxes — When you consult with your tax professional to discuss the tax implications related to your marriage, be sure to adjust your tax withholding on Form W 4 to reflect your marital status. You may also want to discuss whether your Social Security benefits will be impacted if you remarry and are under age 60.

Past financial obligations

Estate considerations

f you’re planning to remarry, you have plenty of company: More than 40% of all U.S. weddings are second marriages for at least one of the participants, according to an estimate by the National Stepfamily Resource Center. Naturally, a second marriage will bring many changes to your life — not the least of which may be changes in your financial strategy and goals.

Before even discussing your investments, you and your new spouse should decide how to handle past financial obligations such as child support, alimony and debts. Consider temporarily managing three accounts – his, hers and ours – to keep track of these various payments.

Retirement accounts

You and your new spouse may want to examine your respective retirement accounts — such as your 401(k)s and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) — to determine if there are areas of duplication that you may wish to avoid. If you both have the same types of investments, you may be more susceptible to downturns that primarily affect one industry or economic sector. By diversifying your holdings, you can reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolios. Keep in mind, though, that diversification cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

Insurance

Remarriage almost certainly will require you to work with a legal advisor to make changes to the following: will, living will, durable power of attorney, health care power of attorney and trust. If you have children, this step is critical toward ensuring your wishes will be carried out. You can also speak with your legal advisor if you are considering a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement. And perhaps above all else, you need to communicate effectively with your new spouse about your respective ideas on managing finances and investments. To develop a joint investment strategy that addresses your goals and your individual differences, you may want to consult with a financial professional. Your remarriage can be a joyous occasion. And by making sure you and your new spouse are “on the same page” with regard to your financial situation and goals, you can make a positive contribution to your new life together.

Richard Hicks Superior Cabinets and Countertops What inspires you?

Seeing another happy homeowner or contractor that sees great results, from the quality of our work to the time factor in delivering what we promised when we said the project would be completed.

What are your aspirations?

My aspirations have always been to provide the best product and service to my customers. The kitchen area in the home is one of the main gathering spots. It’s not just for cooking anymore. There is a lot of quality family time spent in the kitchen.

What are your greatest successes?

Being in business for over 25 years in the same town you were born and raised in says it all.

Our loyal contractors and customers that have come back time after time over the years has led to our success, especially in today’s economic times.

What do you have planned for your future?

To keep on doing just what we’ve been successful at doing over the years - stay on course with the new styles and products that make your dream kitchen not only beautiful but functional.

How did you get into business?

After working for several other companies I decided to start my own business. I offered a good product at a good price. Starting out we just specialized in countertops and then blended in our cabinet line.

Walden Lake T

he Walden Lake Community Association Board Meetings are the third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Walden Lake Community Association office building on Griffin Boulevard in Walden Lake. The next meeting will be August 15th. Meetings are open to all Walden Lake residents.

The Community Association’s office, located on Griffin Boulevard, is getting a facelift on the landscaping between the building and Griffin Boulevard. The area will be divided into sections, including an area for wildflowers, bromeliads, and an area for a flag with a small patio. Watch for this upcoming improvement. You may also have noticed that there is a lot of vegetation growing in the wetlands around Walden Lake. The Community Association’s Board is aware of this and they are submitting a request through the Environmental Protection Commission for help with mitigating the potato vine problem. The vine has taken over and needs to be irradiated as soon as possible. You may have noticed the improvement of the zig-zag wooden path right off the parking lot at the Park. It has been straightened out and paved, making it much safer. The Community Association reminds you to pay your dues if you haven’t already. Please don’t let this lapse to the point where a lien has to be placed on your home. Bette is maintaining the Walden Lake website and urges everyone to log on and register so you can receive important messages and notices from the association. If you are having trouble logging on, contact Bette at the Community Association office, 813-754-8999 or via

email at betteg@waldenlake.org and she will help you through the process. The website address is www.waldenlake.org. What’s happening at Walden Lake Golf & Country Club? I had the opportunity to meet with the new General Manager, Sven Nelson, and I find he has a completely different attitude than the past GM. He wants the community to know that he is doing everything to increase the membership and make the club the fun place it had been in the past. He has a hefty goal of 1,000 members within one year and needs all of our help. The memberships vary from social, fitness, tennis, golf to full Gold Memberships. Sven says the Club will be offering lots of events for members and their guests. There will be great dinners at the Club two Thursdays and two Fridays each month. He is looking to have Holiday Parties, including July 4th cookouts, Halloween fun for adults and children and much more. He would like to implement some member/member guest golf tournaments, host tennis tournaments and more. They will be rolling out some new membership incentives and Sven welcomes anyone to come and talk. I recently booked my annual golf tournament and the first date I requested was already taken. If you are planning a tournament, Sven asks that you get with him as soon as you have a date in mind. He can be reached at 752-1171, extension 222. As one of the top real estate agents in our beautiful Walden Lake Community, I know how important the Club is to our home values. Please consider even the lowest level membership which Sven says is affordable to all in the community.

FHA 203k Mortgage The “WHAT IF” Loan W submitted By: nate davis

hen a buyer is looking at a house, often the conversation in their head goes like this: “Not bad, but “WHAT IF” I could change this…. or add that….then it would be the perfect house for me!” Well, buyers don’t have to settle for less than they want or pass over what could be the perfect house for them. They can turn that “WHAT IF” into reality by combining the purchase of the home with a renovation project using the FHA 203k mortgage. And that project does not have to be limited to just necessities. The 203k allows them to dream a bit. The ‘80s were ok, but some of those interior designs? YUCK! With the 203k you can remodel that bath

or kitchen, paint inside or out, do major electrical or plumbing work, and replace appliances or air conditioners. And it’s not just limited to that. “WHAT IF” you had that extra bedroom or that attached garage? You can do that, too! New roof, new siding, new windows? Need to add a well or septic? Yup, you can roll all those into the purchase of a home. And since it’s an FHA loan, the down payment requirements are easy to meet and interest rates are the best in the market. So go ahead and dream “WHAT IF”. With the 203k we can make that dream a reality. Contact the 203k specialist at Plant City Mortgage, Paul Pritt, for more information on the 203k Mortgage.

written By: Joe Bowles

hen Plant City Raiders’ assistant defensive coordinator, Gerold Dickens, heard about the head football coaching position becoming available at Strawberry Crest High School, he knew it was the right fit for him. “Yeah, in the coaching circles, the word gets around real quick,” said Dickens. “When I heard that the Chargers head coach resigned, I talked to my head coach (Plant City’s Wayne Ward) and I decided to throw my hat in. It would be a good fit for me. My goal was to be a head coach, I love this area, and it also meant that if I got the job, I wouldn’t have to move.” That’s exactly what happened when last month it was announced that Dickens would take over as the head football coach at the two-year-old school that

Dickens, who will also be a faculty member in the Physical Education department, is looking forward to the challenge, especially after Florida schools were reassigned into eight different classifications and the Chargers were placed in District 6A- along with pigskin powerhouses, Jefferson, Hillsborough, and Armwood.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge. We’re a new program, but we have a lot of things already in place. I believe that we are going to be competitive this year. We want to eventually become an elite football program.” Gerold should know about elite programs. After graduating from Plant City High School in 1983, he became a four-year letterman at the University of Florida,

Dickens coaching experience began with a stint as an assistant at Tampa Bay Tech, and for the last four seasons he has been Plant City’s linebackers coach, assistant defensive coordinator, and coordinator of recruiting under former coach Jason Strunk and current coach Wayne Ward.

Dickens has been busy assembling his new coaching staff, retaining four current coaches: Justin Hickman, Joshua Alston, Greg Wolfe, and interim head coach Keith Newman. Three new coaches were added to his staff: Reggie Maddox, Edward Singleton, and Antonio Brown. Poppell Insurance TOC Champion 2011

Plant City Little League’s T

he Juniors division of Little League (13-14 year-olds) is usually a time of transition. Players advancing from the smaller fields to regulation size usually struggle and the results are often unpredictable. This was not the case for 11 members of the Poppell Insurance team that dominated Plant City Little League’s Juniors division as they ended the year with an unblemished record of 21-0, winning the regular season title (19-0) and the city tournament, collecting two more victories following a first round bye. For the season, Poppell Insurance averaged 12 runs per contest while only allowing an average of four runs to cross the plate. For their efforts, Poppell qualified for postseason play prior to all-star

selection by being invited to participate in Little League’s District 4 Tournament of Champions. The TOC, or as it is commonly referred to as the “strong team tournament,” pits the champions from each of the leagues in their district against one another to determine the strongest overall team.

by Plant City Lions Club in the Majors division.

Poppell Insurance represented Plant City well against eleven other league champions, capturing this year’s Juniors title. In fact, it was a banner year for every division from Plant City as Morrow Steel from the Majors and Plant City Civitan from the Minors captured TOC titles, as well. The girls also chipped in with a first place finish by Stingray Chevrolet in Minors softball and a runner-up finish

“I thought that halfway through the season we might have a chance to go undefeated. After our fifteenth win, I asked them team whether they thought we could win it all. They said ‘Yes!.’ From then on that was our goal.” With 19 wins under their belt, Poppell knocked off Johnson’s BBQ following a first round bye and then captured the city

An undefeated season was not what Poppell’s manager Jeff Murray envisioned at the beginning of the year, but as the season progressed, Murray realized that it might be a possibility.

championship by defeating second-seeded Simmons Farms 12-0, securing their undefeated season. With only a few days rest, TOC competition began June 7 at Mike Sansone Park in Plant City. Plant City’s Poppell received a first round bye by virtue of being the tournament host. The second round contest ended early by means of the mercy rule as Plant City defeated Lakeland City 12-2. Chelsea Baker picked up the win. In the next round, Plant City brought down Lake Wales 17-7. Brandon Connell was credited with the victory. Sawyer Dawson contributed with four hits, including a triple. With only two teams left undefeated, the tournament reverted to a best two-outof-three series against North Lakeland to determine the champion. In the first game Plant City easily defeated North Lakeland 16-4. Jeffery Murray threw a complete game. Edgar Gonzalez and Kody Glausier collected three hits, while Devon Rhodes and Juan Tamayo pounded out two each. The second contest was a different story, North Lakeland eked out a hard fought 3-2 win giving the Plant City squad their first defeat all year. Plant City became the TOC winner, however, by defeating the North Lakeland squad 10-5 in the deciding game. Baker pitched six innings and Rogers provided relief in the final frame. Connell, Murray, Rogers and Dawson collected three hits apiece. Team members include Noah Dooley, Devon Rhoades, Chelsea Baker, Edgar Gonzales, Jeffery Murray, Juan Tamayo, Steven Hunt, Kody Glausier, Sawyer Dawson, Cole Rogers and Brandon Connell. Assisting Murray are coaches Kelly Glausier and Mark Rogers.

extra » al reuchel When I can on weekends I still ride my bike 40, 50, 60 miles at a pop. I met this guy up on the overpass in Palm Harbor who is 88 and still going strong. That will be me someday. That’s a promise. Truth is being 60 is a real blessing. All of our kids turned out to be incredible, caring people dedicating their lives to helping others. Four grand kids going on (fill in the blank). I’ve seen so much in my lifetime with so much more to see. Politicians don’t intimidate me because I always remember what it was like way back then when they say things were so good… when in fact things were not always so good. I’m skeptical enough not to believe that any one person can solve our debt crisis and yet have enough faith to believe that everything that happens in my life is happening for a reason. And here’s the silly part. In so many ways I still feel like I’m in my 20s. My grown kids always tell me I’ll never be old because they say I’ve never lost my cool factor, whatever that is. I’m still crazy in love with my wife of 35 years. I still think I’m rich when I’ve got a twenty dollar bill in my pocket and I don’t want a bigger home, a fancier car, a motor home, a big old boat, or any other entrapments of wealth. Bottom line! I’m happy, contented, thirsty for whatever life has to bring. And so far, it’s brought about as much joy as a 60-year-old can stand. I can’t wait for 70.

On turning 60 S

o maybe it should be a secret. Maybe I shouldn’t tell people because they will start making assumptions. Blast it all. I’m 60 now and darn proud of it. How is it that I still remember as a kid thinking 30 was old. 40 was way up there. And anything about 50 might as well have been 90 for all I knew. Now I love it when people say, “ You sure don’t look 60.” What else are they supposed to say? “You look soooo tired

and those bags under your eyes could hide a 737.” Actually, it was a 747, but who’s keeping track? I don’t feel 60. So what is 60 supposed to feel like? Yes, I do have some days when I wish our finances were such that I could quit working and spend the rest of my days building Habitat for Humanity homes or traveling as a Red Cross volunteer. Not going to happen. I’m fortunate enough that I still love what I’m doing. Wisdom and experience play

very well in a business dominated by the 30-somethings. I still chase fire trucks, read way too many newspapers everyday, and try to figure what the stock market is doing and why. Questions still pop up in my head at night when my brain rewinds all the stories of the day. And I’m still competitive enough that I want to be first, want to get the scoop, and want to interview everybody and anybody making the news.

extra » derek maul wedding in 2007; and of Al Perkins, and Granddaddy Albert, Grand-May, GrandMary and Granddaddy Reed. And we shared communion in the bread and the wine and the squash and the chicken and the potato salad and the tomatoes.

Or is this communion? Of course we had the huge family portrait. But Naomi and Craig were still on the road from Connecticut; and Andrew was at his home in Tuscany; and Rebekah’s brother Roy and his wife, Lynda, were coming down the next day; and the Jesse Perkins’ family members were already back in Sylvania… and Zandra’s brother, Albert, insisted he needed to be with his cows in Georgia. But family gatherings without all the family are communion just the same. Because we acknowledge the communion of the saints – and that doesn’t just include the “dear departed” but the reticent, and the recalcitrant, and the traveler, and the ex-patriot, and the lost, and the angry, and the sick, and the tired, and the distracted, and the hurt, and the estranged, and those who want to be there but simply can’t.

Sharing the word:

Is This Communion? T Written By: derek maul

his past month my wife’s side of the family met up for a weeklong reunion in South Carolina.

We rented a group of five cabins in Santee state park, hung out together on the shared front deck, and took turns fixing meals for the group. It was a great week, but Sunday morning was most exceptional, as we came together for worship as a family. We were a family - various Alexanders and sundry Perkins’s; and we were also a family of believers – various Presbyterians, sundry Methodists, and an assortment of other blends and flavors.

My wife, Rebekah, gave the message and her brother Jesse served communion; they’re both Presbyterian pastors. Jesse, cousin Micah and I led the singing. And Anthony Perkins, a lay-minister in the Methodist Church, offered the benediction.

Coming together for worship is always meaningful, and even more so those Sundays we share communion. But, when your extended family is also the family of believers, and when the church family is also your family of brothers and sisters and cousins, then something more happens in terms of what it means to break bread together.

Rebekah preached her way through Genesis that morning, all the way from God saying, “This is good,” to the reunion of Joseph with his long-lost family, where it was good once again.

She referenced the fact that God’s love, and care, and purpose for us far outreaches the temporary detours we often take. God is faithful and God’s promise is – like the Covenant with Abraham – new every morning and to every generation. After church we covered a banquet table with food and shared another kind of feast. The Genesis story became “good” again only when Joseph lived his life in the truth Cousins elbowed and laughed and served of that bountiful promise. one-another. For the adults, just watching this part of the feast conjured memories of The answer, of course, to the “is this gatherings past – and isn’t communion all communion?” question, is – undoubtedly about remembering? - “YES”! This we did in remembrance not only “For where two or three are gathered in of Jesus, who first offered the bread and my name,” Jesus said, “I am there among the wine, but in memory of Nell Perkins them.” And, believe me, Jesus was with Alexander – Rebekah’s mama, who died us in Santee that Sunday morning, and it just a short while after the big family means so much to be a member of that gathering in 1999; and of Bob Alexander kind of a family. – Rebekah’s dad, who departed this life just two weeks prior to our daughter’s

Delivering Fun on 4 Wheels T

he GTI was introduced years ago as the most fun product in the Volkswagen line. I haven’t driven them all, but I think it’s a safe bet that the GTI is still making drivers smile.

The GTI has a somewhat frumpy shape, but don’t let it fool you. I know it’s a hatchback, but it certainly doesn’t handle frumpy. On the exterior, the wheels are probably the best visual clue that there’s something sporty and maybe fun about its performance. And the wheel designs for this GTI (available in 17” and 18”) have probably brought it additional attention. This year, there is a solid 200hp 2 liter 4 cylinder turbo under the hood that propels the GTI from 0-60mph in just under 7 seconds. Not bad. My guess is that some performance tires might lower that number just a little.

august 2011 focusplantcity.com

On the interior, you’ll find a polished look and feel, which is not what I was expecting. Although it’s available with leather, the model I drove had plaid seats. That’s right, plaid seats. Although this might be more appealing to a younger crowd – or maybe Charles Harris (see golf pants), older drivers may not be interested. But it was a refreshing look. And there’s room; lot’s of room. The back seat can accommodate two 6-footers, comfortably, with a matching pair up front – all without sacrificing leg room. There won’t be any request from the back seat to ‘move the seat up.’ The dash has clean lines and the controls are simple with sensible design and layout. Now it was time for a drive. The transmission was smooth. The gas pedal practically begs you to press it to the floor. I always have to be careful driving these smaller cars. Before you realize it,

2011 GTI Delivers Exhilaration and Smiles submitted By: Brian West

it’s very easy to be driving much faster than you think you are. Shifting from 2nd to 3rd was fun. There’s plenty of power under the hood, although the GTI has been criticized for not having enough power. I’d agree with that if you were going to be racing Mustangs every day, but that just isn’t practical. There’s a lot of torque. The GTI delivered in all aspects. Acceleration was great. Merging into Interstate traffic was a breeze, and the compact size and low stance make you feel a part of the road. This GTI delivers. It was a lot of fun to drive and the interior was a least a notch or two higher than I was expecting – almost entry-level luxury car, but certainly not hatchback. There’s something else I thought worth mentioning. As I walked away from the car, I was quickly reminded of that classic sound you get from German

automobiles when you close the door – thunk. It makes the car sound solid and well built. How do they do that? If you’re interested in the new GTI, visit Fields Volkswagen in Lakeland and tell them you read the review in Focus Magazine.

It is the combined qualities of strength and originality that speak through Kelly’s art. Not one to be labeled or put in a box, her certain style of art is known as paper sculpture. The attention to minature imaginative details found in Kelly’s paper sculptures are what makes it so special and unique. Kelly’s paper sculptures have been on display several times at our local library as well as in various art shows with Center Place in Brandon. She has also won blue ribbons each of the three years she’s entered work in the Strawberry Festival Art Show, and the Grand Champion Prize in 2009, her very first year.

But, with this uncertainty in her life, Kelly can always rely on her art to help take her to a pain free state-of-mind. She refers to it as her therapy. From her rich imagination, Kelly was always drawn to using her hands to create things. She participated in various craft fairs as time would allow amidst the process of raising her six children. G

uests will not hesitate to tell that the elegant atmosphere and Southern hospitality make the Red Rose Dining Room a gem in Central Florida. Every Friday and Saturday evening, beginning at 5:00 p.m., diners can indulge in a five-star dining experience and stay to enjoy the Las Vegas style entertainment from 8:00-10:00 p.m. On this particular night, couples swayed to the beat of “My Girl” and other Motown classics performed by featured entertainer Johnny Alston and followed by house band, Destiny. The Destiny group has over 40 years experience with 26 of those years together. Destiny is exclusive to the Red Rose. “When Destiny began at the Red Rose, Mrs. Madonia said that this was our Destiny. She was right. We have been here eight years now and love it,” said Dennis

With a packed schedule from now until the end of 2012, there is always something happening at the Red Rose. An online events calendar posts dates for dinner shows and the upcoming tribute to Doo Wop, which features original artists from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Red Rose restaurant manager David Rodas personally invites you, “We would like the community to come out and enjoy all we have to offer.” Call or visit their website for more information and to make reservations.

Hoag, the band’s leader. Destiny performs an eclectic style of music everyone can enjoy. “We play everything from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, to Jazz, Rock, and Disco. Early in the evening we perform pleasant dinner music. As the night goes on we crank up the rock!” says Hoag. Destiny performs every weekend as well as Singles Night Out on Thursday evenings. So, what keeps guests coming back to the Red Rose? “Everything,” exclaims frequent guests Sherri and Jack Tabb. Their friends Dyann and Chris Godowin from Washington D.C. agreed, they were impressed with their first time experience at the Red Rose. “From the moment we walked in the door, we were treated with the utmost hospitality by the personable staff. The food is transcendent and the entertainment is more than I expected. I will come back, for sure!” said Godowin, a Washington D.C. restaurant manager.

For questions, visit www. thesanctuaryofpraise.webs.com or call Pastor Joe C. Kelley at 813-943-2620. You may also email questions to thesanctuaryofpraise@ymail.com
