Plant City businessman Earl Burkett was named as the new President of the Kiwanis Club of Plant City on October 5. Burkett moved to Florida in 2006 to take on the responsibilities of agency president for Strong Tower Insurance, Inc. which he now owns. A former member of the Kiwanis Club of Valdosta, Georgia for three years and Columbus, Georgia for three-and-a-half years, Burkett joined the Plant City chapter in 2009. “The Kiwanis Club of Plant City was able to impact the lives of 7,946 children last year alone,” he commented. “I’m looking forward to having even more opportunities this year.” Burkett resides in Lakeland with his wife of 30 years, Carolyn, and their children, Caitlin and Jacob.

Rotary Club of Plant City Held 2nd annual Country Cracker Feast to benefit Unity in the Community The Rotary Club of Plant City Day Break recently held their second annual Country Cracker Feast at the home of George and Cassandra Banning. The event was a huge success with $10,000.00 raised to support the United Food Bank of Plant City, and the Charities of the Rotary Club. These charities include Rotary Camp Florida, located in Brandon a camp for physically and mentally challenged youth, S4TL, a seminar for incoming high school seniors, college scholarships for high school seniors, and dictionaries for area 4th grade students. Steve Hurly, President of Unity in The Community Board of Directors while surrounded with board members from both boards presented the check to Carole Wright, President of the United Food Bank of Plant City. The check for $30,000 was the largest donation in the history of the Food Bank. 697 children were served as part of the School Nutrition Program during the Thanksgiving School Holiday. Morgan was recently crowned Harvest Queen at the 2011 Hillsborough County Fair. Morgan is a junior at Strawberry Crest High School, and is an active member of the Strawberry Crest FFA Chapter, were she has served as a chapter officer for the past three years. She is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Young Sprouts 4-H club, Florida Junior Cattlemen’s Association, and The Riverdale Baptist Youth Group. Morgan is also a competitive Baton Twirler for the Patrick Patriots Twirling Corp. Over the past nine years of her twirling career, she has obtained numerous state and national titles. She has earned the title Miss Majorette of Florida three times, and has competed at the University of Notre Dame, where she was placed in the top 5 in the Miss Majorette of America competition.

He has served as the Chairman of both the National Conference of Bar Examiners and the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. The World War II Veteran was selected King of Tampa’s Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. Locally, Mr. Germany has

been active as Past Chairman of the University of Tampa Board of Trustees, Past President of the University Club, and Co-Founder and Past President of the Tampa Club. In 1999, the Downtown Tampa Public Library was renamed “The John F. Germany Library” in tribute to his service to the community. Friends, family, and former classmates congratulated Mr. Germany at a dinner held in his honor prior to the game at Fred’s Market. Among those at the dinner were Hilman Bowden, PCHS Class of 1941 and Reece Smith, PCHS Class of 1943. Before leaving the event Mr. Germany reflected to friends, family and school officials, “This is a day I will never forget. It means more to me than you will ever know.” Nominations for the 2012 Hall of Fame may be sent to Plant City High School at One Raider Place, Plant City, Florida 33566.

Over 300 attendees gathered for a fun afternoon of trick or treating, games and socializing with neighbors and friends. Chamber of Commerce weather made the day even more enjoyable. According to event chair, Bette Guarino, “The weather was absolutely perfect for all who attended which didn’t just include dog owners and dogs of children and parents.” This year the committee made some additions they feel added appeal to all Walden Lake residents. The additions included a Bouncy Castle, Grill Master Mark Poppell grilling and serving hot dogs and vendors like Lindsay Hege with Southside Grooming & Salon giving out treats and information about their services. One of the partygoers was a Great White Pyrenees dressed up as a St.

Louis Cardinal. The Pyrenees named Bonnie 2 is owned by Keith & Virginia Sathern. Bonnie 2 was a Rescue dog and adopted by the Satherns through the Florida Great Pyrenees program (www. floridapyrs.org), which focuses on rescue service. According to the Florida Pyrenees website, “Dogs are accepted from local shelters or are given directly to Rescue by persons who, for whatever reason, can no longer keep the dog. Rescued pyres are given veterinary care, vaccinations and heartworm tests (and treatment if needed), started on heartworm & flea preventative, are sprayed or neutered, and micro chipped. The dogs are fostered by dedicated volunteers until suitable homes are found.” Howl—O-Ween Party goer, Annie All (Little Bo Peep) stared in amazement at the four-footed Bonnie 2 when they two had a chance to interact at the event. The event also featured awards for best dog and children’s costumes. Overall it was a great time for all.

Local Businesses Receive Recognition Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce Hosts Annual Business Awards E written By: Brian West

ach year our chamber takes time to recognize community businesses and share their accomplishments. This is an opportunity for Chamber members to let local businesses know they appreciate their efforts to make our community a better place to live. The event, held at the Red Rose Ball Room, begins with a great dinner. During the awards ceremony, nominees are showcased by category through a video segment. The segments allow each business to share a little about themselves and what they do, and share some of the ways their company supports the community. It’s provides that personal touch, along with some valuable insight. Chairman Lee Williams shared the stage this year with emcee Gary Pike to present the awards. Businesses in 4 categories were considered for the awards: Growing Business (3-10 yrs in business), Small Business (1-15 employees), Mid-size Business (16-50 employees), Large Business (51+ employees) and a special recognition category. The nominees for Growing Business award were: All A Bloom (owner Darcy

Finally, the Chamber presented a special recognition award to the Plant City Noon Rotary Club for their continued support of Plant City. The Rotary hosts some of the most successful fundraising events, and those funds are redistributed back into the community. This year, the Rotary Club made a $10,000 donation to the United Food Bank of Plant City where families in need can receive food. It’s just one example of some great work of the Rotary members. that has been attended by more than 16.5 million people. Through excerpts from the 17-year-old victim’s six diaries and video images, the audiences sat mesmerized by the story of one teenage girl who has profoundly impacted communities in America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Rachel’s Challenge consists of five simple credos for life at any age or stage. At Tomlin, students have signed a huge banner to signify their acceptance of the life-changing guidelines for interacting with people. Many parents and staffers also signed in affirmation and support. Tomlin also does something tangible to acknowledge students caught doing acts of kindness. Names and the specific acts are written on orange construction paper strips by anyone who witnesses the good deeds. Each strip is stapled into a circular shape after linking it through a previously circled “link” to form a long chain reminiscent of the long ago homemade

garlands families made at Christmastime for their trees. The chain grows longer with each passing week, so that by the end of the year when the school celebrates its successes, students can see the difference they’ve made. Kristy Krings was very impressed with the Tomlin students. She said, “I think this school’s student body was on fire about kindness and compassion. They were excited and eager to get out there and do some projects that will improve the climate in their school. My hope is that they will maintain the momentum all year and really make a difference.” PTSA President Di Lott encourages parents, students from other schools, and local organizations to learn more and get involved. 2011 DHS Calendar Girls

he 11th Annual Calendar Girl on November 11, 2011 filled the Durant High School auditorium with excitement and anticipation as the audience awaited for the 36 contestants to make their entrance.

Contestants must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and be in good standing with DHS administration with no disciplinary action. Calendar Girls represent the school and student body, and as such are considered leaders. Each young woman entered the stage with one of the seven escorts from Durant’s athletic teams, then walked through a saber salute presented by the ROTC. Mistress of Ceremony, Brittany Wilson, escorted by Master of ceremony, Rich Maddock, also proceeded through the salute to their post to begin the night’s program. Both teach and coach at Durant High School: Wilson for volleyball and Maddock as head coach for JV football team. Together, they made a perfect duo announcing each girl’s biographies in the preliminary competition.

Many girls enjoy participating in this event. “It gave us self confidence and allowed my personality to shine on stage. It brought me closer to a great group of girls,” replied Celeste Lewis. During the competition, three contestants were recognized for their great efforts in most sales in the fundraiser effort. Marissa Thompson sold the most calendars, Taylor Mew sold the most tickets, and Raelynn Nichols sold the most advertisements. This event was sponsored by the Durant Athletic Booster Club and is a huge fundraiser for them. Peggy Voss, DHS culinary instructor who has taught at the school since it’s opening in 1995, chaired this year’s competition. Three contestants were recognized for outstanding results. Marissa Thompson sold the most calendars, Taylor Mew sold the most tickets, and Raelynn Nichols sold the most advertisements. The calendars are sold by pre-order and they go quickly, so be sure to reserve your copy today.

Initially, each contestant was judged on beauty, personality, and poise. After the top 25 contestants were called out, it was time to begin the final portion, in which points were awarded for beauty, onstage question with poise, and overall appearance. Each contestant pulled a question from the basket and responded. Chelsea Bowden was asked, “Who has been a big influence in your life?” She didn’t miss a beat when she explained that her grandma (Nanu) has been a big influence in her life because she watched how she cared for her grandfather, James L. Redman (Papu) ,during his struggle with cancer. Minutes after her onstage question, Bowden was crowned the 2012 Durant High School Calendar Girl. Bowden’s reaction when asked what was going through her mind as she was announced Cover Girl, was: “I was so nervous. I almost started crying.” Bowden is the daughter of Bud and Pam Bowden. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government, Leo Club, and Captain of the Durant Volleyball Team. Upon graduation she hopes to attend a four-year university and major in Nursing. The 12 calendar girls for 2012 include Jessi Rae Varnum ( January), Danielle

Denise Turgeon’s gorgeous jewelry creations glistened at her booth. Silpada Jewelry is a collection of the finest sterling silver enhanced with quartz, turquoise and other gems. Describing her business, Turgeon said, “I enjoy the flexibility and portability of this business.”

Mildred Humphrey picturesque homemade aprons reminded shoppers of the ones grandmother once wore around the house as part of her “dress code“. Lovely prints of flowers, fruit, and, of course strawberries, along with beautifully sewn solids seemed especially familiar. Sparkly beaded dolls, baskets, little girls’ rings and little boys with fishing poles sparkled in the sunlight shining on the booth of JH’s Crafts & Gifts Shop. Trowver Ride Company gave the brisk fall day a touch of excitement and fun on with bouncy rides and inflatable playhouses for the children. The Trowvers enjoy traveling from the New England area to Florida and meeting new people along the way. It was one of those beautiful Florida days in the fall of the year and a memorable time to enjoy the best of Plant City’s downtown.

he 1914 High School Community Center will once again open its doors to The Florida Opry, Plant City’s own rendition of the Grande Old Opry, on October 8 at 6 p.m. Patriots will be pleased to know the Pledge of Allegiance will be recited at the beginning of the show and the singing of “God Bless America” will bring the nostalgic evening to a warm and heartfelt close. Live music and the joyful sounds of delightful entertainment will once again echo through the hallowed halls of what was once the main educational building for the Plant City students. The Florida Opry, born in the esteemed 1914 High School Community Center, opened with its first show in 1996. Founded by the now retired hometown pharmacist, Merle Henry, the Opry was purchased by The East Hillsborough Historical Society in August of this year from Randall and Mayda Dallman.

r. Jack and Marie Myers of Cynergy Church returned recently from Honduras with an amazing story about preparation, prayer, timing, and God’s favor. The evangelists have traveled internationally for 18 years, touching lives in Jesus’ name in Nepal, Mexico, Honduras, Haiti, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. But never before has a country’s president invited them to present an evangelical crusade at the nation’s White House.

FEDERAL STUDIES AWARDED TO UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA TO RESEARCH CHIROPRACTIC AND INJURY PREVENTION

The Federal government has awarded the USF School of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Sciences $1.42 million to research the effectiveness of specific exercise interventions for reducing the risk of back injuries amongst some of the nation’s most vulnerable – firefighters and military personnel. “Back injury is a primary condition that dramatically affects our nation’s heroes – cited as a top reason for disability and early retirement amongst firefighters, and top non-combat reason for service men and women being displaced from active duty,” says John Mayer, D.C Ph.D. associate professor and Lincoln College Endowed Chair in Biomechanical and Chiropractic Research at USF, and lead researcher in the $715,000 Department of Defense and $701,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency studies. “These studies will be the first to be led by a Doctor of Chiropractic at a major university that will attempt to identify the preventive outcomes of applying specific exercise interventions amongst firefighters and soldiers.” Each study will be conducted in several phases carried out over the next few years. With research in progress, the FEMA study will include 106 participants headquartered at a Tampa, Florida fire department. Participants will undergo 24 weeks of

bi-weekly supervised training sessions consisting of particular stability and resistance exercises with the goal of improving back muscular endurance – commonly documented as a direct link to back pain. Expected to begin in spring 2012, the DOD study will include 600 active duty US Army soldiers and will provide a perspective that complements traditional directions of treatment-focus. Instead, the study will assess preventive methods by implementing and evaluating targeted high intensity exercise interventions designed to strengthen the back extensor muscles. “Chiropractic engagement with regards to specific exercise interventions and their potential to prevent back conditions has continued to gain momentum,” says Mayer. “Federal agencies are now recognizing the skills of Doctors of Chiropractic to address prevention and treatment of back injury for our national heroes.” SPECIAL NOTE: In honor of Thanksgiving (November 24th), we would like to take this opportunity to express our THANKS to everyone who has been a part of our office this year. This year October 31 was not a date just for tricks. A very special treat was presented on behalf of the Florida Strawberry Festival and its board of directors to the University of Florida‘s Research Center located in Balm, Florida. It was a check for $20,000. Paul Davis, General Manager of the

Florida Strawberry Festival and Ron Gainey, President of the Board of Directors, presented the generous donation to Jack Rechcigl, University of Florida Research Center Director and Professor of Gulf Coast Research and Education Center along with Craig Stanley, Professor and Associate Director. The check was a tangible way to show their appreciation and their indebtedness to the University of Florida for the lifelong commitment the school has made to the farming industry. Gainey commented that hew was “pleased that the funds will go toward research.“

of Strawberry Breeding Genetics. “Jozer is working on developing resistance to an important strawberry disease called Colletotrichum or crown rot, which is a problem specific to the Southeastern US,” he continued. Cast members for Don’t Tell Mother include (in alphabetical order0: Judy Barta, Jeremy Davis, Tyler Hollis, Mandi Miley, Kay Secord, Mathew Tobey, Krysteena Wakefield, and Sandy Worth. Interestingly, Jeremy Davis who plays Detective Joe Shimko, is actually a Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Department officer. In this his first PCE appearance, Davis had to “shush” the audience from laughing when he and real-life fiance’ Mandi Miley couldn’t stop laughing at themselves on stage. The more they laughed, the more we did. This was also Miley’s first PCE appearance and she’s a natural. In interviews with the cast, directors, and volunteers, one theme was constant: PCE is like family and the more the merrier because relationships deepen as they work together to produce wholesome entertainment for our community. It is also interesting to note that most of the

players and volunteers have been with the organization for years. Once involved, theater becomes a big part of their lives. Assistant Director Kelley Gustafson is a good example. She fell in love with drama at Plant City High School and played her first PCE role at age 13. She said, “What’s wonderful about the work with PCE is the relationships you create and of course, the art itself. It’s always fun to tell someone else’s story.” Sandy Worth, who plays a “wannabe gunmoll”, has played in four PCE productions since she moved to Lakeland from Michigan in 2009 to teach first grade. The best part of the experience, she said, “has been the chance to meet and get to know people you can trust. It’s difficult to make friends when you move from out of state. The PCE members have made me feel like family.” Come on out, Plant City, and support our local community theater (and in this case, your local sheriff ). Do tell mother that “Don’t Tell Mother” is definitely worth the trip.

etired USAF Lt. Colonel Dick Koch remains active recruiting supporters for the noble cause of Honor Flight West Central Florida. The former military journalist presents this new mission through an informative talk and powerful video to civic groups in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota counties. Honor Flight purposes to fly willing WWII Veterans to see the magnificent memorials built in their honor on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. According to Koch, these brave protectors “changed the course of world history and never asked for anything in return.”

HFWCF, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, was established in late 2010 as an official Regional Hub of the National Honor Flight Network and one of 100 chapters in the U.S. Last year the groups rallied and raised funds to send 63,000 Veterans on the all-expense paid pilgrimage to see America’s tribute to their service. As part of the Network, HFWCF provides

“Honor Tours” for WWII Veterans in the Tampa Bay area. Approximately $50,000$60,000 per flight is needed to cover air transportation, motorcoaches, food and beverages, wheelchairs and other materials.

WWII’s end, 16-million Veterans survived. Today, only 1.87 million are alive. Florida, with 321,000 survivors, is second only to San Antonio, Texas. Of those, 32,000 reside in the West Central Florida district.

National and local sponsors include Allegiant, American, and Southwest Airlines, Arby’s, Bright House Networks, Chick-fil-A (4th St. N., St.Petersburg), Hilton Hotels Corporation, McDonald’s, TECO, and United Parcel Service. With their support and other generous individuals and groups, the local chapter has been very busy in 2011: Mission 1 flew 25 Veterans on May 3; Mission 2 on June 28 flew 71 Veterans; Mission 3 flew 72 Veterans on September 20; and Mission 4 for on October 29 flew 72 more, including 100-year-old Ann Left who served in the Women’s Army Corp.

The waiting list of more than 400 identifies many with disabling or lifethreatening health issues. Time is running out because WWII Veterans are dying nationally at the rate of 1,000/day.

Each daylong trip concludes with public “Welcome Home” celebrations for the returning Veterans. Don’t miss the inspirational photos and comments on the organization’s Facebook page. The mission is urgent because according to the Veterans Administration, the number of WWII Veterans is dwindling. At

On Friday, November 11, 2011 the patriotic citizens of Plant City gathered at the Veterans Memorial Park to honor and remember our Veterans, past and present.

Edwena Haney proved to be a delightful master of ceremonies and Mitch Kerwin left the audience speechless with his delivery of Taps. Also participating in the service were Vice Mayor Bill Dodson,

Jacob Gonzalez, a Walden Lake Elementary student, read a remarkable essay providing the history of Armistice Day, now known as Veterans Day, and offered a special tribute to his greatgrandfather who served at the end of World War II. All of the students did a terrific job in expressing their appreciation to our Veterans for the freedoms we each now enjoy. It is impressive to have our area youth invest much time and effort to attend and be involved in such an important event. One of the songs performed by the Springhead Elementary Chorus, “We Will Not Forget,” remains an encouraging

reminder that our educators and students have chosen to embrace the past sacrifices and service of our Veterans. Seated in the audience was Master Sergeant J.E. Cunningham, wearing a Green Beret and “jump wings” (Airborne qualified), which made him identifiable as one of the U.S. Army’s elite Special Forces. With him was Col. Lonnie Davidson, who wore a striking dress blue uniform decorated with a red cord and “jump wings” as well. Both served in the Korean War. Master Cunningham shared this challenging thought in poetry: “God and the soldier we adore, in time of trouble and not before, the trouble will be righted, God forgotten and the soldier slighted”. Many thanks are due Hopewell Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens for sponsoring this event each year. Once again, it was truly a service for our Veterans that Plant City can be proud of!

Snellgrove’s Restaurant Where Plant City Goes to Eat I submitted By: Plant City Photo Archives & History Center

f you happen to walk down Collins Street in the heart of Downtown Plant City, you cannot miss Snellgrove’s Restaurant. Serving Plant City residents and visitors breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Snellgrove’s has managed to stay in business for decades while other restaurants and eateries have come and gone. Tammy DeVane, present owner of Snellgrove’s along with husband Curtis DeVane, attributes the restaurant’s success to offering popular meals at affordable prices and preserving a friendly environment that generations of families have greatly appreciated throughout the years.

The story goes that a lit cigarette burned the building down some years later. The restaurant was consequently rebuilt in a one-story building. Snellgrove’s Restaurant initially was open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Snellgrove’s website notes that the restaurant “served many local folks, including a group of phosphate miners for whom a table was reserved for lunch each day”.

To this day, the Snellgrove’s menu offers daily specials to customers. Favorites include chicken fried chicken with white gravy, sirloin tips over rice, green beans, fried green tomatoes, chicken and dumplings, and mashed potatoes. In the spring of 1992, the Snellgroves were ready to retire. They made a proposition to the DeVanes regarding taking the helm of the restaurant. After showing interest, Curtis and Tammy DeVane bought Snellgrove’s from Norman and Kathern Snellgrove. Even though new owners have taken over, the name and established practice of providing great quality sustenance have remained the same. Snellgrove’s Restaurant has a motto, “Not a Habit, But an Addiction,” which originates from customers admitting that some of the menu items are irresistible in such a way that once they taste them, they want to keep coming back for more. Prominent features of the restaurant include a back parking lot (built after the Elks Club fire of 1979) and a pick up window on the side for customers who are in transit and call ahead to place their order. The 2005 Downtown Plant City arson incident that destroyed a number of local businesses on Collins Street negatively affected Snellgrove’s across the street. The businesses who lost their place of business relocated elsewhere and therefore were no longer close nearby to visit Snellgrove’s Restaurant as regular customers. In January of 2008, The Tampa Tribune reported that “Firefighters say an electrical problem may be to blame for a small fire today at a building at Collins Street and J. Arden

Mays Boulevard.” The mentioned building is the one that Snellgrove’s Restaurant occupies. Mrs. DeVane recalls that the smoke from the fire came through the vents in the building and the smell did reach the restaurant. She said the restaurant was closed for an hour until authorities completed the fire inspection. The restaurant was recently remodeled with new wooden floors in the dining area, while the kitchen and restrooms had new tile installed. Two of the owners’ daughters currently work at the restaurant. On top of running Snellgrove’s, the DeVanes are spiritedly involved in the community. For example, they collect donations for the SPCA and have previously accepted food for the animal organization. Also, they assist the Everyday Blessings Children’s Home by matching every donation they receive through their collection. In addition, Tammy DeVane indicated that Snellgrove’s has operated a school drive for the child caring agency. As the oldest restaurant in Plant City bearing its original name, Snellgrove’s Restaurant is a place where everyone knows everyone and you get a good deal for your money. Three years ago, your Chamber started what we hoped would become an Annual event. It has done just that! This year our 3rd. Annual CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATING CONTEST will take place with several Chamber businesses participating. It all starts on November 25th. and continues to December 19th. at noon. Here is the way it works…Chamber businesses will decorate a Christmas tree in their place of business. You will have the opportunity to stop by and check out all of the decorated trees and vote for the one you think is best. The participating businesses will be issued “logo” stickers. These stickers will be placed on a “playing card” that the visitors/voters will be using. Each visitor/voter gets a card listing the participating businesses along with their addresses and hours of operation. Visitors go to the business, view the tree and pick-up a “logo” sticker. That sticker is then placed on the “playing card”. Now here is the best part. After you have visited all the businesses that participate and you have voted for your favorite tree, you bring the card to the Chamber office, 106 North Evers St. by noon on Monday, December 19th. There it will be deposited in a box for a drawing that will take place at 2 p.m. on that date and the winning playing card that is drawn from the entries will be awarded a $150. A True Kind Hearted Soul Passmore Strives to find the Best in Others

Marsha Passmore has spent her life here in Plant City, and to say she’s been

active in our community would be an understatement. It might be easier to list the things in which she hasn’t been involved. She’s served with the Plant City

Chamber of Commerce, Plant City Lions Club, Unity in the Community and the United Food Bank, just to name a few. I recently had an opportunity to speak with her about her family and some of her experiences in our great city.

Focus: And I know you have a sister. Passmore: Yes. I have a wonderful sister, Dodie. She’s not only my biological sister, but she’s my best friend. We have always been very close. I love her so much, and thank God everyday that He gave me such a great sister. Dodie is the smart one, and I am so proud of her accomplishments. She is the entertainer in the family and is often seen on the set of Plant City Entertainment either directing or acting.

Focus: Tell me a little about your parents. Passmore: I was blessed with wonderful parents. My father died in 1974, but he left a lasting legacy that gets me through each day. He always looked for the good in everyone. Even in the worst of people, he would find something positive and focus on that. So in my life, when things aren’t all that pleasant, I think about my dad and remember what he would do. As for my mother, she’s a sweet southern lady from Opp, Alabama, and at the age of 87 she is still a challenge to be reckoned with. I think my mom is where I get my desire to always want to do something for others. This week, she’ll probably bake 4 or 5 cakes for people to try to help them out, because that’s just who she is and what she likes to do. I have had a really great mom and dad, and they always brought Christian principles into our home.

Focus: Tell me a little about your husband. Passmore: Billy and I have been married for 34 years. He’s a solid rock. He’s a loving person with a caring heart. And he’s a hard worker. Recently he has been thinking about retirement, and even though he hasn’t set a date certain, he’s totally earned that right to relax a little. He has worked for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department for 33 years, and prior to that, began his career in law enforcement with the Plant City Police Department. Billy likes and prefers street crime, and loves the action related to it. Billy is very dedicated to me. We never had children, so God blessed us in many other ways. We’ve been the aunt and uncle to a lot of “adopted” nieces and nephews, because Dodie never had any children either. We are so grateful to our friends that have been nice enough to share their children with us. Focus: Tell me about your service with the City Commission. Passmore: In 1985, which was a long, long time ago, I went through the Leadership

program offered by the Plant City Chamber of Commerce. In my mind, it was really preparation to do more for the city in which I live. After I completed the class, there was this silent voice speaking to me, and I knew it had to be God, saying, “You need to run for City Commission.” So I started learning everything I could about the city. I started going to City Hall and to the public library and would pull information; old meetings and things that had happened in prior years. Then in 1992, I felt that I had done about as much preparation as possible and that it was time to announce that I was a candidate. Wow, that was a new experience, but a very exciting time for me and my family and friends. We walked the streets and did the leg work. I don’t believe there was anyone that we didn’t try to meet and talk with. The neatest part about that campaign was that I won that election by two votes. It was so close that they did a recount, and back then hey had to do it by hand. I couldn’t blink or breathe, I was so nervous. But my team filled up City Hall that night with my campaign workers and they announced that the count was the same and that I’d won by two votes. My main area of concern was for the disrepair of the downtown. At the time there was a Downtown Business and Merchant’s Association headed up by Myrle Henry and Bob Edwards, and a great group of people that wanted to make things better. We began looking at small ways to make the downtown more attractive while looking at the bigger picture. With those humble beginnings the downtown revitalization was underway. I was appointed by my fellow City Commissioners to serve as the chairman for the Community Redevelopment Agency to begin in the development of a plan, which in the three years that I was given to serve in that capacity, we worked hard to gain the interest of the city and residents to help make sure that redevelopment did come to the area. And as the saying goes, the rest is history. Many people were responsible for the changes for the better that have occurred over the last 20 years. I was honored to serve the people of Plant City for six years as a City Commissioner, and I cherish that time.

Focus: Do you have any interest in getting involved with the commission anytime in the future? Passmore: Probably not as a City Commissioner, but I do still serve my city as a member of the Historic Resource Board. I was also a member of the committee to bring the Veterans Memorial Park project to fruition, and will be willing to help on any special projects that may come up. However, when my husband retires and he says let’s go on a trip, I can tell you, it will not take me very long to get the suitcase packed. We both like to travel, and we are always ready to cruise, so I want that option to remain open. Focus: What did it mean to you to win Citizen of the year? Passmore: It is more than halfway through the year and I still have to look at the plaque from time to time to realize that it’s true. It was one of the greatest honors I have ever received. It is in a very prominent place in our home, and looking at all the organizations involved in the selection, solidifies the whole thing. I’m very grateful for it. The day it was announced, I remember sitting in the meeting and I had already decided who I thought it was going to be. But when they started talking about me, I was never more elated in my life. My husband and my sister and the ones on the selection committee can certainly keep a secret.

Focus: What does your service to the Food Bank mean to you? Passmore: I never realized how far reaching the need was until I began serving on the board, but now it’s something I think about everyday. I certainly don’t take the food I eat for granted. I know we can’t feed the world, but we can concentrate on the need here in Plant City. The Food Bank’s Board of Directors and the volunteers are a great group of

Focus: And now you’re working with Hopewell Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens. Passmore: I am, and I love being a part of the Hopewell family. Six years ago I was approached by Hopewell to see if I would consider coming on board to promote the funeral home in the community. Because of our location south of town, the management wanted someone to be out in the community for them. It was the perfect fit for me because I am so in love with this community and they are so in love with what they do for people they serve. As Edwena, the President for the company puts it, “You only get one chance to do a great job.” I serve as the Community Service Coordinator, and I am so pleased to be a part of the Hopewell staff. Focus: What kind of music are you listening to right now? Passmore: I like to listen to a mixture of things, but right now I’m listening to more country music. It’s funny. What I have to do is start listening to the country radio stations as the Strawberry Festival draws closer so that when the Country Music Stars come to the big entertainment stage I know their songs. My favorite singer, however, not country, is Neil Diamond. Focus: What’s been your most embarrassing moment? Passmore: When you are as “crazy” as me, it is hard to single out one thing. I am telling you on a daily basis I will do something absolutely stupid that would probably mortify a normal human being. But, no one has ever said I was normal. I love to laugh, and most of the time I am laughing at myself for something completely pathetic that I have either said or done. Life is truly a gift from God, and I take that literally and try to spend each day enjoying every moment that I can. Passmore is just a wonderful person. I can’t recall ever seeing her without a smile on her face. She’s very approachable, incredibly easy to work with, and always seems to have the best intentions, and those of our community, in mind in all of her work. In the note I wrote to you in last month’s edition of the “Focus” I shared about how I’ve been praying for you— and I also shared about my dream to plant a house of worship in this wonderful city we love so well. May I share a bit more with you about that dream? It comes from a heart that loves to worship God in community with others. Baptist author John Piper has said, “Delight is higher tribute than duty”. To me, part of what this means is that when we make worship the purpose of all that we do, then, acts of love and service naturally flow from there. The things we do for God, and for those around us, are a higher tribute to Him when they come from delight. My heart for the church, both when it’s gathered inside four walls and when it’s scattered across the city, is that worship comes first— it’s the singular purpose of the church. Then, the many tasks of the church, which include loving others and making disciples, bubble right up out of delighted hearts. Worship isn’t just a Sunday thing: It’s an everyday, 24-7 thing! Putting worship first has a wonderful way of balancing and prioritizing our whole lives. So, Plant City, my pastor’s heart wants to build authentic Christian community—a worshiping body of believers where people love each other, serve alongside each other, are accountable to each other, and are called to hospitality—all while growing in Christ-likeness. ome people buy investments here and there, now and then. Others open an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), put some money in it, and then forget about it. But this type of haphazard investment behavior can lead to haphazard results. On the other hand, you’ve got five good reasons for creating and following a comprehensive, long-term investment strategy.

Reason No. 3: You need to help manage the unexpected. You can’t predict what life will hold in store for you. To cope with unexpected costs, such as a major car repair or a new furnace, you’ll need to create an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses so that you won’t be forced to dip into your longterm investments. And to deal with other major uncertainties of life, you’ll need adequate life and disability insurance.

Reason No. 1: You want to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle. For most people, building resources for retirement is the most powerful reason to invest. As a key part of your investment strategy, you’ll want to consider investments that have growth potential. The proportion of your portfolio devoted to these growth investments should be based on your individual risk tolerance and time horizon. And, as you move much closer to your actual retirement date, you may decide to shift some — but certainly not all — of your portfolio from growth-oriented vehicles to those investments that can provide a reliable income stream and incur less volatility.

Reason No. 4: You need resources for major life events. Your retirement may eventually require the bulk of your financial resources — but it’s not the only milestone for which you’ll need to save and invest. You may need a down payment on a house, or you may someday even want to purchase a vacation home. And if you have children or grandchildren, you may want to help them pay for college. Reason No. 5: You’ll want to keep in mind investment-related taxes. Taxes, like inflation, can eat into your investment returns. You’ll need to evaluate whether you can benefit from tax-advantaged investments and retirement accounts, such as traditional or Roth IRAs.

Reason No. 2: You need to stay ahead of inflation. Over the past few years, we’ve experienced relatively low inflation, but over time, even a low inflation rate can dramatically erode the value of your savings and investments. That’s why you may want to consider investments that provide the potential for rising income.

So there you have it: five good reasons to adhere to a unified investment strategy that’s tailored to your situation. This type of “blueprint” may not sound glamorous, and it’s certainly not a “get rich quick” formula, but it will help you stay on track toward your important financial goals.

How did you get into the dry cleaning business?

our local schools. My ad in this month’s FOCUS Magazine provides collection details and contact information.

My family has been in the commercial cleaning business for many generations in Lakeland. It was a natural fit for me to continue with this family tradition. I have had a dry cleaning business in Plant City since 2004.

What are your aspirations?

What inspires you? My business inspiration is twofold. First, no two days in a row are the same. Our customer needs change and evolve and our business does as well to keep our customers happy. Second, I am inspired by providing great dry cleaning service to our customers which keeps them coming back. I also am inspired through community outreach. For example, I am an active member of the Plant City Noon Rotary Club and Trustee for the Plant City Boys & Girls Club. In addition, I am also currently involved in an effort called “Coats for Kids.” Myers Cleaners is partnering with Area VI Schools, FOCUS Magazine, Leadership Plant City Class of 2012, Jarrett-Scott Ford and Sunshine State Federal Savings and Loan to provide coats to needy children this winter. Individuals simply donate coats in good shape and Myers Cleaners will mend and clean the coats and work with the committee to redistribute through

sports » volleyball Hackemack was fitted with a back brace that she will wear until December and which will keep her from even attempting a comeback this year. The hardest part was telling her coach, Brittany Wilson and the rest of her team. She felt that she was letting them down. But to Taylor’s credit, the diagnosis didn’t make her bitter. In fact, she is encouraging… positive… bubbly. “After a few days I adapted to the news. My mom and dad have been so encouraging, along with some of my friends. I was also encouraged by the movie, ‘Remember the Titans.’ I love the message that it gives: ‘If you have the will and drive you can overcome anything.’”

Overcoming Adversity… Hackemack has the “Drive and the Will” Twice Y

ou’re a senior in high school. You had two all-conference years, and an offer to play volleyball at a Division 1 college. You are looking forward to the best year of your life, so far. You’ve prepared all spring and summer for your final season. Everything is going your way… that is until you feel some discomfort that turns into pain. The diagnosis? A broken back. “When they told me,” Taylor Hackemack recalled, “there was this initial sense of depression that lasted a couple of days. My mom was with me. We were both crying. Everybody was crying. I cried as I went to doctors’ appointments for three days. My season was over.” Taylor, a senior at Durant High School, was told that she had a fracture to one of her vertebrae, a result of a fall that they suspect, occurred sometime in the summer during a game. Hackemack has a high tolerance for pain and the injury wasn’t unbearable until it was aggravated after only three games into the Cougars’ season. For Taylor, this was news that she had heard before. You see, during Hackemack’s freshman year a doctor told her that she had been playing on a broken foot for months. Later it was discovered, that Taylor’s other foot was broken, too. Surgery followed and Taylor maneuvered

around on her cast boots with the aid of crutches for about five months.

At that time, Taylor who lives with her mom Meredith, and her dad Ken were living in Texas. After Ken changed jobs, the Hackemacks moved to the Dover area and Taylor enrolled at Durant. Taylor was not able to return to competition until October when she slowly eased her way back in. By the end of the season, she received second team all-conference honors as a sophomore. In her junior year, Taylor was back in action without any lingering effects and had a stellar season. This time, however, she was a first team all-conference selection. Along with the notoriety came a visit to Mississippi State University and Taylor verbally committed to the school to play volleyball. Taylor is tall at 6’2”, a bonus for a volleyball player. She is also athletically gifted. Her mom is a former volleyball coach at the junior high level and her father played professional football with the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World Football League and with the Buffalo Bills of the NFL. Taylor is an example of the movie’s message. She has overcome adversity… twice. By the way, after a dismal start without their star player, Durant has made it all the way to the regional semifinals. Taylor can be seen cheering her teammates from the bench… helping them to overcome adversity, as well.

Morgan McGavin T his year will be the defining year for Plant City Raiders’ Morgan McGavin. And the senior playmaker is looking forward to the challenge. After averaging seven points per game last year as a first-year varsity starter, McGavin is confident that her game has improved and the team overall will be improved as well.

This year, a lot of responsibility will be placed on McGavin as she will be the primary ball handler, alternating at point guard and shooting guard in a fast-paced offense that should prove to be lethal enough to upgrade last year’s record of 2-18. The 5’5” 125 lb. sparkplug will rely on her ability to push the ball up court and her talent to get her shots off quickly. Morgan may have given us a preview of what she is capable of in a game she played last year against East Bay when she led all scorers with 17 points. McGavin’s journey began when she was nine years old. “My cousin, Chris Hughes, played for Gulf Breeze High School in Pensacola. I used to go watch him play and he inspired me to want to play basketball too. So, I started playing in the third grade for a team sponsored by a Methgodist church in a recreation league and I played in that league until the fifth grade when I left there and moved with my family to Plant City.” Morgan has a big family. She lives with her father Mike, step-mom Sandy, step-brother Tyler, and her sister Regan, a sophomore forward on the Raiders’ team. She also has two additional step-brothers, one step-sister, one halfbrother and one half-sister -- enough family members for two teams. After moving to Plant City, Morgan took three years off from playing

competitive basketball and didn’t play again until her freshman year in high school. At that time she also joined the Plant City Ballers, a travel team led by her Raiders’ coach, Mark Boswell whom McGavin highly respects. “Coach Boswell does a great job. He is very passionate about the game which makes us passionate too. He works hard on and off the court. He’s an inspiration to the whole team,” McGavin said. Life for McGavin is not all about basketball. Her other passions are scary movies and singing. She gets an adreneline rush from scary flicks, but she gets the cold shoulder from her friends when she sings. “Yeah, I love to sing, but I’m terrible! I used to sing karaoke but everybody tried to keep me away from the microphone.” Morgan also plays flag football for the Raiders. She is a running back, slot receiver, and conerback. McGavin helped lead last year’s team to an undefeated regular season. The team then advanced through the fourth round of the state playoffs before being eliminated by their first loss of the season. Morgan has a desire to play basketball in college. With a 4.5 weighted GPA, McGavin is weighing her options loooking at schools like the University of Dallas, Crown College in Tennessee, Berea College in Kentucky, and Southeastern University in Lakeland. Her desire is to major in psychology. She wants to be a sports psychologist, a counselor with children, or a professional singer… if anyone will let her near a microphone.

You can tell that the skills of the players on every team have really improved as the season has gone on.” Brosky teaches the importance of baseball fundamentals. His philosophy is “always hustle.” He also has some team rules. 1. No Pouting; 2. Good sportsmanship; 3. Pray before games; 4. No negative talk; 4. Clean up the dugout; and 5. Carry your own gear. “It’s the little things that make you successful,” says Brosky.

Baseball Team of the month Gamecocks Hold onto Lead as Fall Season Winds Down I n Florida, baseball is year-round. And why not? We have the weather to play the sport nearly everyday of the year. So, while a few players put up their bats and cleats at the end of the summer, most simply take a few days off and then head back out to the park for fall baseball. That’s the way it is here every fall as the Plant City Little League “second” season winds down with five divisions from tee-ball to juniors vying for the top spot in their age group. The first fall games were held in mid-September and the

final games are scheduled the week before Thanksgiving with a league tournament held in each age group. The fall is a time for fun and player development, but that does not mean that the quality of play is any less than the rest of the year.

That is evident by the play of the Minor League Gamecocks (9-10 tear-olds) who are holding on to first place by a slim thread through November 1, with three games remaining to be played. In fact, four of the six teams in the minors division are all within a half game of one another in the standings, which means that first place

is in jeopardy every game.

Carl Brosky, also known as Lieutenant Colonel Brosky, coaches the Gamecocks (originally the Volcanoes). Carl is a logistics officer and a 26-year veteran stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. Assistant coaches who share responsibilities with Brosky are Pete Vanfossen, Jody Duran, and Gary Miller. “We’re doing good, said Brosky. “We have a winning record, we’ve seen some good pitching, we have went from not hitting to really hitting the ball well, we’re getting

He’s the Ben Zobrist of our team… can play anywhere.” The Gamecocks are geared up for the remaining few games because they know that the final standings determine the seeding for the league championships tournament. Right now, they have the lead, but the field is bunched up behind them and every game is important. That’s the way it is every spring and every fall in Plant City Gamecocks players are Jacon Fuentes, Noah Carter, Jack Brosky, Logan Vanfossen, Justin McQuaig, Joshua Jordan, Ethan Duran, Brandon Miles, Hunter Croslin, Dalton Short, and Andrew Miller.

ith a strong drive to better both her future and her community, Isis Ash perpetually strives to do her best with any task she is handed. From the tennis courts to the classroom, this more than well-rounded senior is the perfect representative of a model student. Academics are significant to Isis. She is currently ranked 9th in her class with a 5.88 GPA. This puts her in the top 2% of her senior class. Ash has even earned straight A’s since her freshman year. She was also selected onto the Homecoming Court by her peers both her junior and senior year. Due to her outstanding PSAT scores last year, Isis is one of 1,600 semi-finalists in the country for the National Achievement award. In upcoming years, Ash plans to attend either the University of Florida or Duke to pursue a major as an oral surgeon. A member of the 1270 Club, he has the eighth highest SAT/ACT score at PCHS. Hurst was also recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction for his academic success. Also a member of St. Clements Catholic Church, Hurst actively participates in the music ministry as well as being a youth group leader, usher, and Eucharistic Minister. With the time Hurst spends studying, playing golf, participating in multiple clubs, and at church, you’d think he’d spend his (little) free time relaxing; but Hurst doesn’t slow down for even a minute- he has chosen instead to give back to those in need. Hurst has volunteered more than 195 hours with My Brother’s Keeper, a food pantry. “It’s close to my heart, and it helps our community,” Hurst says, adding, “and I have a good time.” After high school, Hurst says, “My future is open to whatever I discover.” He has applied to Auburn University, Florida State University, and the University of Florida, with plans to seek a degree in engineering. With the amount of accomplishments already under his belt, he will no doubt be successful in anything he chooses to do.

So what’s wrong with flip-flopping! I Written By: Al Reuchel

f you believe the pundits, the biggest sin for any politician is to flip-flop. If I’m reading the tea leaves properly, that means to change your mind about a previously held position. In this year’s presidential race there are plenty of flips and flops, people changing their minds. I won’t point them out because their opponents are already doing a fine job of that. Now, I am no politician, though I do get to talk to plenty of them, so the sin of changing one’s mind has never been a litmus test for me. In fact, every time someone makes a big stink, I’m the guying asking, “So, what’s wrong with that?” Rick Perry told me the problem with flip flopping is not such a big deal when you begin formulating your positions. But as you get older, you should have solidified your

positions enough that you don’t need or shouldn’t need to change your mind. It’s a sign of weakness, I guess.

So, in my unscientific way I asked a few of my colleagues and friends about flip flopping and if they felt it was such a crime. Most didn’t think it was such a big deal. After all, have you ever changed your mind about anything important? I have and I’ll bet you the same is true for you. I used to hate vegetables and changed my mind when I found out there were actually good for me. And, my grandma would slip me a quarter when I ate my peas. It’s like this. I say I am going to stand in the road because I believe it’s a cool place to be. I’m not a car, but in our neighborhood everyone walks on the streets more than they do the sidewalks. So I’m standing there

and suddenly a big old truck comes roaring around the corner headed straight for me. I have two choices: I can stand my ground because I told my friends I liked standing in the street, or I can flip-flop and move out of the way and live to tell about it. Guess which option I would choose? Now I can hear your brain turning. That’s not a fair comparison because we should all know better than to stand in the street believing it’s a safe as the sidewalk. Consider this though. Suppose you supported a policy that made perfect sense at the time you supported the idea. Then someone comes along with a better idea, the scientific data to prove that it’s better, and a new policy that is genuinely better than your original idea. Who is the bigger fool or loser or most closed-minded that wouldn’t change

a position if a newer, better one came around? Are we all so 100 percent certain or convinced our ideas are so superior that if another one comes along we won’t at least give it a fair hearing? Again, I’m not a politician and I just try to apply common sense. We are all a bunch of flip-floppers from time to time and nobody crucifies us for it. But if you are running for office, changing your mind is the kiss of death. How about we all decide on our own which ideas are the best. How about we support candidates based on the positions they currently hold, not the ones they used to hold. How about we interpret changing one’s mind for a better idea that benefits more people and improves our lives as a sign of strength, of determined leadership that puts the good of the people above the ideology of party. Maybe that’s too radical. I think I’ll flip-flop and go back to having someone tell me how I should think. After all, isn’t that the American way?

Creative Journeys Artist Embarks Upon A New Journey written By: Heather Davis

laudia Iris Van Horn takes the oft-quoted “Life is a journey, not a destination” advice to heart as she practices and shares her art with others. Although Claudia’s focus is on holding space for others to open up to their gift of expression, she is still allowing her own work to continue to evolve.

With the creation of her new studio known as Creative Journeys, Claudia is putting her lifetime of experience to great use. The focus of the studio is to offer others a chance to really delve into the process and experience of creating art, rather than a sole focus on the end result.

Creative Journeys allows one the space to do the real work that needs to be done, through the healing spiritual journey of artistic expression.

Claudia refers to this type of art form as experiential art. A multitude of mediums are available for the artists to use, including watercolors, acrylics, collage, found objects, clay, crayons, pencils, and

t’s been two years since Dodge produced the Durango, but the 2011 was worth the wait. This debut is easily Dodge’s best for the Durango. The old Durango was too boxy; as though the lines were forced. The 2011 Durango is a complete victory for Dodge, in every aspect: exterior styling, interior comfort and performance. This is what the Durango should have been; could have been all along. The 2011 comes to the masses with a unibody frame, which is based on the same design as the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The unibody frame provides a nearly 50/50 weight distribution and a more car-like position for the driver. In

addition, the new Durango’s wheelbase is a full five inches longer than the Cherokee and provides a very smooth, stable ride. The body motions as it should, allowing drivers to take corners at speeds far superior to those of prior models. The new Durango is available with V6 or V8 Hemi engines. The base 3.6 liter V6 delivers 290hp. It’s quiet and smooth. The V8 Hemi produces a full 100hp more than its smaller counterpart, which feels like the best power to weight ratio for this new Durango. Acceleration is what you want in an SUV and the exhaust comes to life with the sounds of something more formidable under the hood.

Although the interior is much improved, and it is comfortable, it still feels a little too sterile. Although the layout works, each component is so segregated, as though someone different developed each and then everyone was asked to bring them together. Nothing really blends together, and that’s a feature for the driver that is always more appealing. However, each of the controls are within comfortable reach of the driver and their placement is sensible. The interior of the Durango provides seating for 7. At 6’2”, I like to judge the roominess of a vehicle by adjusting the front seat to my liking, which admittedly requires a little less legroom than other males my height. I just don’t like to have

the seat so far back that my legs and arms are completely extended. Anyway, then I like to climb into the second row to see how much “realistic” legroom is available, and then into the third row. The front seats are very comfortable and the driver definitely feels in control. The second row also provides plenty of legroom. I was very comfortable. However, the third row is obviously designed for those with a more petite stature. Ultimately, the 2011 Durango really delivers. It’s a large step in the right direction for what the Durango should have always been. More appealing to the eye, it has the necessary power necessary and provides comfort for its driver and passengers. If you’re interested in the new Durango, be sure to stop by your local dealership for a test drive. You won’t be disappointed.

They had seen the fashionable “Mrs. Evelyn” on Bay News 9 and wanted to experience the fine dining she is noted for at the Red Rose. Trays of desserts were displayed at each table from which guests could select the fourth course of the exceptional meal. Desserts attractively served included choices of Chocolate Mousse Cake, Cream Brule, Tiramisu, Cheesecake, and an Amaretto Dessert. Marge Ferro declared, “the Amaretto Dessert was incredible.” Betsy Schnarre exclaimed, “There is only one way to describe this evening . . . Delightful!” The couples went on to say that the Red Rose was the perfect place for their anniversary celebration as the “food was fabulous and the entertainment was fantastic.” They said without a doubt their first visit would be followed by many more.

he Red Rose Inn and Suites presented an “over the top” evening on a recent Saturday night in the Dining Room. Guests were greeted by Maître‘d David Rodas and escorted to tables where a menu describing the night’s four course meal was waiting. Dining guests were invited to select an appetizer, salad and entrée from a variety of delectable choices from seafood, steak, pasta, and chicken. P.J. Leary’s Las Vegas Sounds entertained the dining guests with a mix of songs from several eras. Several guests were celebrating special occasions from anniversaries to birthdays to getting together with great friends. On this particular evening Art and Betsy Schnarre of Lake Wales, Florida were celebrating 53 years of marriage. They were dining with Bill and Marge Ferro of Winter Haven, Florida who were celebrating 54 years of matrimony. Betsy and Marge are childhood friends who attended school together beginning with the 6th grade in

Wheaton, Illinois. Both husbands got job transfers to Florida and the two couples were happily reunited. Last year the ladies celebrated their 55th Class Reunion from Wheaton High School, the school of football great, Red Grange. They were excited to celebrate their anniversaries and time together with great food and fabulous entertainment at the Red Rose. Following the dinner music of the Las Vegas Sounds, Johnny Alston’s Motown Revue took the stage singing “Get Ready . .. ‘Cause here we come.” This electrifying group had the crowd out of their seats and on the dance floor. Johnny’s dance moves were only surpassed by his voice of crowd favorites including “My Girl,” “Stand by Me,” and “Earth Angel.” Enjoying a night out with friends was Mary Hartnett Westerman, a former Plant City resident who moved from Plant City in 1976. Now a resident of Anna Maria Island, Florida, Mary brought neighbors from the island to treat them to Plant City’s finest dining venue. The ladies were hoping to get a

The Catering Company & Café T he Catering Company & Café has enlivened private events in the Tampa Bay area for years. Now, as of last month, they’ve opened their café for breakfast and lunch right in the middle of downtown Plant City. We thought we’d come out to see what was on the menu.

Owner Sharon Silver told described what sets the food apart at The Catering Company. “Everything is made to order. It might take a few minutes longer, but it’s all made to order,” she said. The restaurant buys from local vendors several times a week to ensure that everything in the kitchen is at the peak of freshness. The breakfast selections include a good variety of staples. The Hearty Breakfast has scrambled eggs topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, sausage, pancakes, fresh cut fruit, and a choice of either Danish or a muffin. The Wrap Sandwich is made with scrambled eggs and cheese and a choice of meat, and comes with a choice of side for $5.95. We sampled a couple of lunch items. The 6 oz. Hamburger Steak was lean and was enhanced by the house made steak sauce. Between bites of the Blackened Chicken Wrap, we drizzled honey mustard over

the Cajun grilled chicken breast, lettuce, tomato, and cheddar cheese. We also found the wrap to be a pleasure when topped with the side of homemade hot raspberry sauce. “Everybody likes the hot raspberry sauce,” Mrs. Silver said. Melted butter in the sauce mellows out the tartness to provide a rich, fruity flavor that makes it right to spread liberally over the food.

The French Fries at The Catering Company compare to those you expect from Five Guys- bold, seasoned, and soft. And there are a lot of them in a side. Overall, the food can be described as healthy (except for the massive, frosting covered Cinnamon Roll we carved into) and unless you really try otherwise, you can expect to walk out feeling like you’re full of a well-prepared, tasty, sensible meal. For the holiday season, some catering favorites from last year’s offerings are coming back and will be served in the restaurant. We especially look forward to a particular favorite we’ve heard aboutseasoned turkey breast stuffed with dressing and gravy. 1,800 of these were made for members of our National Guard last year alone, and we plan to join their ranks soon. “It’s just fabulous,” Mrs. Silver
