LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

The flu bug stopped in for a visit at the Floyd home two weeks ago. And as many of you know, this is not cause for a party. Our oldest son Zane and I missed a little school and work as a result - no fun, for sure, and especially not for DeDe, who played nurse.

See why everyone is driving to Bartow to buy a car from TOM EDWARDS.

But just when I thought about complaining for a little extra sympathy, I read some of our local stories in this month’s magazine. And I re-read some of the letters nominating special women for our annual makeover event. And I decided after all, that a little flu was only a minor bump in the road of life. Please don’t miss the articles about Plant City’s Relay for Life and local heroes like PCHS teacher Mike Storter, nurse Becky Dame and others who’ve walked towards a cure for cancer.

They made me think, “What’s a little setback from the flu compared to their sacrifices?” Then, when I considered Al Ruechel’s plea for the Heart Gallery kids who hope to be adopted into a forever home out of the foster home system, I determined it was time to get up, give my boys a hug and get moving again. So, here I write. Thanks, as always, for your response in support of Focus, area businesses, and this great community. It’s our continuing pleasure to serve you.

Warmest Regards, Mike Floyd Got a story idea? Looking to advertise in Focus? Contact us for more information.

Everyday Hero Achievement: Entered a burning home in search of his neighbor

Joey Wiggins and his wife Polly noticed an unusual light shining through their bedroom window just after midnight on May 5th. The light was flames engulfing their neighbor’s home. Joey instructed his wife to dial 911 as he rushed to help. Busting through the front door, without thought and knowing the basic floor plan, Joey made his way to the master bedroom, where he assumed the owner would be. At that moment the ceiling behind him began to cave. This is when reality set in. As Joey continued to make his way to the master bedroom he heard shouts from behind him. Deputy Charlie Perdomo entered the home in search of Joey. After confirming that end of the house was empty, Joey crawled on his hands and knees to the garage window to escape. “The garage window was shoulder height, Deputy Perdomo must have snatched me through the window- he is the real hero.” Joey affirms. Joey does not see himself as a hero and when asked why he entered the home, his answer is simple, “at the time I believed that my neighbor was possibly inside the burning house and was in danger and in need of help.” Joey may not think of himself as an everyday hero but we all hope that we have neighbors like him.

THE CRESTFALLEN ROSE BY MICHAEL A LEGAL THRILLER MARTIN H WRITTEN BY: ASHLEY KREAGER

ave you ever had a story idea but didn’t think you had the patience, endurance, or time to craft it into a novel? Most people toss the idea seconds after it’s conceived, but Michael Martin charged through the drafts, the red pen marks of editing, the publishing nightmares, and finally the pure joyful relief of it all being over. But to Michael this wasn’t the end.

Local Lakeland attorney Michael Martin deals with Agricultural litigation. In the

16

MAY 2012 focusplantcity.com

early 1990s a case from Scotland came calling. A mother fertilizing her household plants didn’t realize the pesticide was being absorbed into her skin and thus affected her pregnancy. When her daughter was born blind, this was traced back to the pesticide the mom used. Sadly, Michael couldn’t help the family, but it did spark an idea for a novel about harmful pesticides and their effects. The story follows four protagonists through their fight with a huge chemical company and as each character develops

their lives will intertwine with one final massive litigation case in Miami. Throughout the novel, readers experience many different settings such as Houston, Miami, and Germany. Michael took time while writing to visit each city in order to offer authentic descriptions. Traveling wasn’t the only thing Michael had to do. In his 10 years of writing Crestfallen Rose, many times he wanted to quit. Thankfully, with the encouragement of his family and Catherine Adams, one of his editors for 3 of the 10 years, he saw the manuscript through to completion. Now, following publication by iUniverse, Michael is working to find other ways to establish his work; he hopes even to publish the story in Braille. His end goal isn’t for the paycheck, but rather for his story to be shared. “My goal is that when it is time for the yard sale, you keep my book,” Michael Martin explained. “Also,” he added, “please give it to someone else who will enjoy it.”

ANNUAL DINNER O WRITTEN BY: KELLEIGH KLEIN

n Sunday, July 22, 1962, Hillsborough County Sergeant Ben P. Wilder Jr. and two other deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant in eastern Hillsborough County. Sergeant Wilder and Deputy Perry Young were at the front door when the suspect fired a shotgun through his front door jalousie glass, striking Sergeant Wilder in the head and Deputy Young in the forearm. Sergeant Wilder was killed and Deputy Young later had his arm amputated. The suspect was subsequently killed in a shootout with back-up deputies.

RECOGNIZES LAW ENFORCEMENT HEROES

50th Annual East Hillsborough Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner. The 2012 title sponsor was Ed and Myrtle Lou Swindle. Other sponsors included TECO Energy, Inc., Neumeister’s Candy Shoppe, Sunshine State Federal Savings and Loan, and numerous other businesses, civic organizations and individuals. This annual event continues its rich tradition of honoring the men and women who dedicate their lives to upholding the law and protecting the public from those who seek to upset the delicate balance between good and evil.

As a result of this tragedy, local Plant City business leaders joined together to create a special recognition for local law enforcement officers. Business leaders like Wiley Gillespie, who is still an active committee member, formed the East Hillsborough Law Enforcement Appreciation Association.

Four law enforcement agencies serving East Hillsborough County select an officer of the year to honor at the dinner. These agencies include: Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Highway Patrol, Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office and Plant City Police Department.

For 50 years the Association has raised money for the sole purpose of covering the cost of an annual dinner designed to honor local law enforcement personnel. The fundraising enables law enforcement officers and a guest to attend the event free of charge.

At the dinner, the designated head for each presented an award to his representative agency’s recipient. In addition to the highly coveted award, each recipient also received $500 cash and a bouquet of flowers was given to their significant other. In celebration of the prestigious event’s 50th anniversary, a special event challenge

Looking back, the highlight of my 32-year career was winning the award as a detective in 1981.” To offer help or donations for next year’s event, readers may contact one of the four participating agencies and get involved.

Three-year-old Snookie is Cook’s “baby,” her Grand Champion heifer. In previous years, Cook has won several awards with her heifer, but this was her year to go big. This year Cook won the 2012 Grand Champion Angus Heifer at both the State Fair and the Florida Strawberry Festival, as well as the 2012 overall heifer at the Strawberry Festival with Snookie. “When judging Angus, there are particular things the judge looks for,” Cook explained. “The Angus breed has a unique body structure. Snookie was very feminine, she was fat, deep bodied and she has a nice butt… They love cows with nice butts,” Cook added, laughing, Cook first started showing commercial heifers when she was in sixth grade, but with little success in winning any show awards, she wanted to try something different. Quickly Cook’s passion for cattle grew, and by ninth grade she became interested in showing only Angus Heifers. That interest led her to meet Dale Locke, owner of Locke and

For you see, they know their purpose which is “to know Christ and make Him known.” They try to accomplish this in the simple daily living out of Scriptural principles modeled by Jesus. Naturally, this begins at home, where the couple’s daughters may be their greatest legacy. Already Taryn and Hope have lived one of the Christian faith’s most difficult, yet most profound lessons - which is to “praise God in all things.” During a recent conversation about Mike’s condition, little Hope reminded Laura that just like the “Facing the Giants” coach told his team in the film, “Mommy, we will praise God if it is good, and we will praise God if it is bad.” Mike Storter and his wife, Laura, and their daughters, Hope, 5, and Taryn, 10, are trusting God for strength and for opportunities to share. is husband to Laura, also a teacher, and daddy to Taryn, 10, and Hope, 5. When Mike was diagnosed with AML, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, in 2009, the prognosis was not good. Now after five rounds of chemotherapy, four rounds of radiation, a bone marrow transplant (from his brother) and many thousands of prayers spoken in his behalf, the man who

Recently, the couple has been busy making message videos for their girls to view as they move forward through their own special milestones. They also realized a dream come true when Mike baptized Hope on Resurrection Sunday. The Storters met at the University of Florida. Mike called the first time he saw Laura “unbelievable,“ saying, “She took my breath away; she was so beautiful.” Now 23 years and two lovely little ladies later, the couple are truly “two become one.” They are much loved by many and Plant City’s First Baptist Church members, too, where they serve the college ministry. Since Mike shared his evening message about God’s purpose to a full house on April 22, more than 900 have viewed the archived video, a record for the www.fbcpc. com website.

PCFBC’s Pastor Michael Lewis appreciates his congregation’s response: “Mike Storter’s leads a Christ-centered life, deeply committed to faith, family and friends. He believes with Paul in Philippians 1:21, ‘For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.’ Through his life and recent suffering, Mike bears the fragrance of Christ and hopes all will see his wonderful Lord. Coach Storter is making a lasting impression on the lives of countless students through his teaching and coaching.” Local youth pastor Mike Nelson, who once assisted Storter coaching PCHS football, agrees: “He’s left an indelible mark. By pushing us all, students and peers, to be our best and see the good in everything, he showed us how to love unconditionally.” Mike shares a special friendship with Becky Dame, his “great encourager” and bone marrow transplant nurse at Moffitt Cancer Center, who herself has undergone two transplants 20 years apart. Crowds cheered at Relay for Life 2012 when Becky led the Survivor’s Lap, followed by Mike on a motorized scooter. She considers Storter to be “a great testament to God’s sovereignty - knowing the Lord sees us through it all.” She continued, “Mike daily reflects and truly believes God has the perfect plan for us. He realizes also that plan may not be to heal us here on earth.” Either way, Mike wins. With sincere appreciation for what God has already done in sustaining his family, he said, “No words can express how grateful we are for the love and support poured out by so many. Whatever He holds for our future will be just fine because He can be trusted - always!”

ocal and state evangelical church leaders celebrated at Walden Lake Country Club on April 27, 2012 to encourage the commitment of seminary students preparing themselves to become The Evangelical University & Seminary future leaders and teachers in the Christian “hosts students from 11 different Christian church. denominations and 23 different churches in the community”, according to Dr. The Fifth Anniversary Celebration of Wallace Lott, who also attended the event. the Evangelical University & Seminary (EUS) featured such notable speakers as “EUS teaches students a literal former State Representative Johnnie Byrd, interpretation of the Bible... This is J.D., Professor Bob Westlake, Dr. Benny critically important,” Dr. Lewis said.

Finding people of faith and integrity to accomplish the task set forth in the “Great Commission” of Matthew 28 requires a measure of dedication and personal sacrifice. For one, teaching and missionary work are definitely a calling - not something you just wake up one day and decide to become. Many forego careers and family life to commit themselves to a cause greater than themselves. Seminarians pledge themselves to undertake the most critical and important mission in the church today. Michael and Cheryl McDaniel of Plant City, both students of EUS, are a case in point. The couple has literally “sold everything they own” and are preparing to travel halfway around the world to Papua, New Guinea to share what EUS has taught them. Both spoke eloquently in moving testimonials at the anniversary event of what EUS has meant to them. Other student speakers included renowned Pastor Mike Fredette of Plant City’s First Baptist Church, who has “a true passion for EUS.” Also speaking was Brenda Ruiz, a lay student who moved some people in the audience to tears by her testimony. By any standards, these are a special group of people - ones who have literally

dedicated their lives to the cause of Jesus Christ. Seminarians function in all sorts of capacities including pastors, priests, counselors and even Sunday school teachers, like Cheryl Boamah of Mount Olive Baptist Church, who credited EUS with preparing her “with the knowledge to preach and teach the Word of God.” As such, seminarians require specialized spiritual training that in some cases requires years to accomplish. To help meet that need, seminaries were established. A seminary, theological college, or divinity school is an institution of secondary or post-secondary education for educating students in theology, generally to prepare them for ordination as clergy or for other ministry. EUS continues in that tradition. The faculty and staff include several outstanding instructors from Moody Bible Institute, Temple Theological Seminary, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The Evangelical University & Seminary is located at 105 Baker Street in downtown Plant City, Florida. Tuition costs, at only $180 per 3 credit hours, are a fraction of those charged by other seminaries and by far one of the most affordable in North America.

herrie Mueller was surprised and honored when she discovered she was the winner of the Tom McEwen Award at the awards banquet sponsored by the Tampa Chapter of the National Football Foundation on April 11th. This prestigious title is awarded to an individual who possesses qualities of leadership over athletes in both academics as well as athletics. Mueller has been the College and Career Counselor at Plant City High School for eleven years and goes above and beyond for all of the students who attend the school. She makes it a point to help the students present themselves in the most effective and professional way possible. If there is an award or scholarship the students apply for, Mueller will help them to develop a package with a resume attached, to “show off ” their achievements and potentials. Many scholarship donors continuously compliment Mueller on the presentation of the applications submitted

Pec McGinnes, Mueller’s sister is very proud of her. “She’s always strived to be the best she can be. In high school she was Valedictorian of her class as well as Strawberry Queen. Now, in her position as College and Career counselor at PCHS, she seeks out kids with potential and pushes them to be the best they can be. She expects perfection in their resumes, and as a result, they win a lot of top awards in the community, the state, and in the nation.”

The survivor lap is the very first lap that kicks off Relay. These survivors take their first lap together. Photo by Deana Garrison

plethora of emotions filled the Plant City High School football field Friday, April 20,th at the 2012 Annual Plant City Relay for Life as 85 teams rallied together to raise money for a cure for cancer. Amidst the laughter, joy and tears there was compassion and concern.

Cancer has altered our lives and taken loved ones away from us. This cruel enemy has affected virtually everyone in one way or another. To find a cure would be a dream come true for the many who have experienced the sense of frustration, fear and emptiness once cancer has entered the door of their lives. Relay For Life is a way to come together with all who are fighting this dreadful disease and to remember those who have lost the fight. Linda Herman, PC Relay Chair said, “I made a promise to my mom that I wouldn’t stop until they found a cure.” And she is holding true to that promise. Herman has played an active role in Relay for the past 12 years and has served on the committee for the last five. She added, “I’ve lost family and friends to cancer and I’m just sick of it!” This year’s Honorary Survivor is Becky

When it was time for the Luminaria Ceremony to begin after sunset, the stadium lights were suddenly dimmed and participants who moments ago had been celebrating grew quiet. Relay For Life participants, survivors and caregivers remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those battling the disease through luminaria bags. Everyone gathered around a luminary bag among the many lining the track and considered the life whose name adorned that particular bag. The purpose of this and the memorial video is always to remember and honor. At the somber ceremony’s conclusion, everyone joined in a quiet lap around the track, encouraged by the luminaries placed in the bleacher seats that spelled out “Hope” and “Cure” and resolved in unity to continue the fight against cancer. Although it was necessary to end the Relay at 1:00 a.m. due to weather, the foul conditions didn’t put a damper on the total amount raised for a cure. Herman reported

tell about cancer. A new team, Team ToMarrow, led by PCHS junior Nick Rodriguez, was inspired by Lee Ann Styron Clos, a young woman battling her own fight but seeking help another close friend who needs a bone marrow match. She was eager to help her friend and not once has complained about her own illness. This inspired Nick to help Lee Ann on her mission. He gathered a team of friends and with the help of “Be The Match Foundation,” they traveled to different schools asking faculty and staff members to allow a cheek swab in order to see if they could possibly be a match. Typically a cost is involved, but the foundation helps to offset the price so that no monies needed to change hands. The team also participated in “Be the One” run to raise money to help this foundation continue to get swabs. Rodriguez has already helped register 79 potential matches. It is truly uplifting to see the younger generation taking their own initiative to help others in need. Although Clos lost her battle to cancer a few days after Relay, Nick continues on the quest to find more matches in her memory. The Team ToMarrow tent was busy that night with many people coming in to offer a cheek swab.

The Plant City Relay Committee held a “Wrap Up” event on May 7 at Plant City’s First Baptist Church. Local school choruses performed together the songs they would have sung Saturday morning had not the Relay been called because of inclement weather. Following the musical performance, Relay Committee members and Team Captains gathered to receive awards and recognize many teams for their dedication and hard work. The Strawberry Festival Team also held their drawing for the Reba and Hank guitars and poster, which raised even more money for the cause.

Trapnell Elementary is always eager to help at Relay. They had a plinko board help raise more money for Relay. Throughout the year the team held several fundraisers including selling candy grams during the holidays. Photo by Deana Garrison

Our community can take pride in knowing that Relay for Life in Plant city is Florida’s second largest R4L event. Herman is thankful that this caring community continues each year to gather together and help one another. The stories shared and the faces of those still fighting the battle reveal the importance of Relay for Life’s success in Plant City. Your donations are still needed to help meet, and hopefully even exceed, the original $250,000 goal. Visit www. relayforlife.org to donate online after searching for the Plant City event. A contribution to this cause is never too late.

CLEMONS ROAD BAND C WRITTEN BY: JENNIFER VANHORN

lemons Road is a local band on the rise that grew up in Plant City, Florida.

Lead guitarist Cliff Brown, who also performs lead vocals, decided to organize a band and enlisted a group of amazing local talent: bass player /vocalist Eric Long; also on lead guitar and vocals, Matt Richardson; Gavin Baulac on banjo and vocals; Kenny K on pedal steel guitar; Josh High on electric guitar, and Chris Williams on drums. Many of the boys grew up together, playing on Clemons Road. Their music is a blend of influences from country to reggae to rock. Cliff Brown explained, “We want to be a band that crosses cultures and breaks age barriers. We want to make people feel good and give them songs to use for the soundtrack of their lives!”

32

MAY 2012 focusplantcity.com

On April 15, 2012 more than 200 people enjoyed a day of great music and celebration when the band held a live video shoot for “You Still Turn Me On,” one of the featured songs on their debut album. Clem’s Custom Meats provided complimentary food, too. The band was “so hot” that even the bonfire started to dance across the field. Thankfully, the dancing flames were quickly put under control.

The group has already amassed a large following of almost 1,000 members on their Facebook page. They are also very excited about their upcoming album release in June at Cowboy’s Steakhouse, to be sponsored by Miller Light. The exact date is yet to be set, but it’s sure to be an amazing night of music, food, and fun with Clemons Road at their upcoming album release.

COMMUNITY EXPO B

A HUGE HIT THIS YEAR!

WRITTEN BY: ROBERT TILFORD

y all indications the Community Expo, sponsored by the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, held at the Expo Building on the Festival grounds on May 3, 2012 was a phenomenal success this year!

Most were impressed with the information they learned about local businesses and about Plant City. Even for those who have lived here all their lives, the Community Expo proved to be a great way to learn even more.

The well-attended event brought together more than 54 businesses representing products and services related to health, travel, farm equipment, finance, insurance, dental, local restaurants and non-profit organizations.

New friendships and peer relationships are also formed at the Expo event. One vendor selling jewelry explained that a portion of her proceeds benefits a local charity. She was able to both promote her products and direct others as to how they could help the non-profit.

Each vendor hosted a booth, which included some sort of promotional item, freebie, candy or games. Kids of all ages relished the vast array of freebies they could collect, which made for an excited room full of constant winners! This year’s fun and games included a chance to win a brand new 2012 “Mustang Convertible” in “Life’s a Breeze” contest, sponsored by Valrico State Bank.

The Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce members were also on hand to promote these local businesses and to distribute the new 2012 Membership Directory, which lists area businesses and includes a wealth of information about the community and history our great town. Dr. Todd Glenn and Dr. William “B.J.” Garrison Caring Concepts Chiropractic

Chiropractic care is an essential component of medical care, but what separates one chiropractor from another? Having a chiropractic degree is only the first step in a chiropractor’s ability to serve their patients. Much like medical physicians, chiropractic physicians can go beyond their initial education to specialize in certain areas of chiropractic care, so it’s vitally important to understand what education your chiropractor has to be certain they are the best fit for your particular needs. One of the benefits of Caring Concepts Chiropractic is that it is not a singlechiropractor office. Both Dr. Todd Glenn and Dr. William “B.J.” Garrison have post-graduate education and combined they can serve a well-rounded variety of specific chiropractic needs. In addition to his chiropractic degree, Dr. Glenn has completed 300 hours in chiropractic orthopedic post-graduate studies. Dr. Garrison has completed 300 hours in chiropractic neurology post-graduate studies. For example, their education and experience helps them to determine the best treatments for a whip-lash victim. Even in minimal damage or zero damage car accidents, whiplash can still occur and the physical damages can last for years if not properly treated. Caring Concepts stays up to date with the top technology available to treat their patients. If you are currently experiencing headaches, neck pain, back pain, sciatica, auto or sports injuries, or any other discomforts, contact Caring Concepts to see what Dr. Glenn and Dr. Garrison can do to help you. If they determine that chiropractic care is not the best option for your condition a referral will be made to the appropriate medical provider. Serving Plant City for 22 years.

Dr. Fitzgeraldo Sanchez, M.D. Sanchez Dermatology

If you are in the process of looking for a Dermatologist here in Plant City, let me introduce you to Dr. Sanchez. He has been in practice for five years and has been in Plant City for over three years. Dr. Sanchez was born in New York and lived in several states before settling down in our great community, Plant City. His office is centrally located in the South Florida Medical Center on Plant Ave. Being self-employed, he says “this gives me the opportunity to give oneon-one care to my patients, that when they are referred to me by their General Practitioner they are going to see a doctor and not a Physician Assistant.” His commitment is “One Dermatologist and One Patient.” “Physician assistants and nurse practitioners have their place in assisting in skin care but seeing patients without direct supervision is not one of them. I strive to ensure that each visit is a specialist visit and when you visit Sanchez Dermatology you will see a dermatologist,” said Dr. Sanchez. With a combination of over 90 years of dermatology experience in his family, which includes his father, uncle and cousin, Dr. Sanchez is highly qualified. In addition to his private practice, he has been on staff with South Florida Baptist Hospital for the past two years and knows most of the doctors in the Plant City, Brandon and Tampa area. Robotic Surgery Now Available at

South Florida Baptist Hospital

South Florida Baptist Hospital is very excited about introducing its new robotics surgery procedures to folks in eastern Hillsborough County. As part of the BayCare Health System, the region’s leader in minimally invasive surgery, it was a natural certainty that SFBH would have its own robotic surgery team. Four experienced and highly qualified surgeons in a number of different specialties here look forward to serving our community with their expertise.

Interview by Cheryl Johnston Photography by Anthony Sassano

Seek Surgery Help FROM THE EXPERTS

Should surgery become necessary for you or your family member, don’t miss an opportunity to discuss the possibility of robotic surgery with one SFBH’s certified doctors. Investigating all your options is always a wise move.

Continued on next page

Continued from previous page Each of these doctors is an enthusiastic supporter of the new technology and especially Dr. Clinton Hall, M.D., a leading surgeon in the program. Hall describes the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System as “fantastic,” noting that “doctors can have an added level of confidence because it provides better visualization and more precision with greater access to the affected area of the body.” For those unfamiliar, robotic surgery is a minimally invasive system which enables a technically trained surgeon, working from a state-of-the-art robotic platform, to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures with unmatched precision through very small incisions. The surgeon’s talent is enhanced by superior visualization and better access to the affected area because the robot’s design enables wrist movements impossible for human hands. Because the surgery is extremely precise, patients will experience reduced trauma to the body, less pain and scarring, minimal blood loss, fewer complications, shorter recovery time, shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to normal daily activities. In short, robotic surgery results in improved outcomes. Surgeons in the BayCare hospital system undergo extensive and specialized training to operate the highly sophisticated da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System, which provides an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Stephen Butler, M.D. is also proud of the Plant City hospital’s recent technological additions and one of the forerunners on the local team. He said, “The availability of robotic assisted surgery at SFBH makes us current with the best surgical techniques and practices available in the Tampa Bay area.” With enthusiasm for its future, he added, “Robotic surgery is in its infancy and will with time and investment branch out in many directions to become even more refined and effective than it is already.” Dr. Carlos Lamoutte, M.D., another leading proponent of the new technology, can relate. He said, “The reason for this evolution is simple. Robotic surgery allows the surgeon to tackle routine as well as more challenging cases in a minimally invasive fashion. Cases you would normally have to approach in an open fashion due to conditions such as severe adhesions, endometriosis, and etc., now can be performed with the da Vinci robot. Robotic gyn surgery offers a less painful and quicker recovery for the patient and with less blood loss during surgery. All this translates to a quicker return to normal quality of life.” According to Dr. Jamil Rehman, another of the four robotic surgeon specialists at SFBH, “Any open or laparscopic surgery can be done much better with the robot.” In his book Robotic Surgery- A New Era of Minimal Access Surgery, he explains: “Many surgical procedures performed today using standard laparoscopic technique are being performed more quickly and easily using the da Vinci Surgical System. It allows complex surgical tasks with minimal fatigue due to their ergonomic interface, wristed instruments with seven degrees of freedom (enhanced dexterity), tremor filtering (enhanced precision), and three-dimensional stereoscopic visualization (enhanced surgical capabilities)…”

Robotic Procedures CURRENTLY AVAILABLE AT SFBH

Doctors continue to investigate the many ways they can use robotic surgery. While surgeons prefer a traditional approach for some procedures, the list performed using a robotic surgical system continues to grow. SFBH patients with the following conditions may be treated with a robotic procedure: Colorectal, Esophegeal, Gynecologic, and Urologic. General, Gastric and Colon Robotic Surgery: Diverticular disease, colon cancer, stomach cancer, gallbladder disease, and hernia repair Esophageal Robotic Surgery: Heller myotomy (to treat the swallowing disorder achalasia) and Nissen fundoplication (to treat reflux, heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Gynecologic Robotic Surgery: Uterine fibroids, endometriosis, menorrhagia or excessive bleeding, hysterectomy, removal of benign ovarian cysts/masses, re-section of endometriosis, and Salpingo-oopherectomy. Urologic Robotic Surgery: Prostate cancer, ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, bladder and kidney cancer, vesicoureteral reflux, nephrectomy or partial nephrectomy (removal or partial removal of the kidney), prostatectomy, a removal of all or part of the prostate, and urinary obstruction (pyeloplasty)

Robotic Surgery EQUIPMENT AND BENEFITS

Surgeons control the procedure performed on a patient cart with four interactive robotic arms, which hold the surgical instruments and high-definition camera. The first step is to make tiny incisions and insert the instruments and camera into the operating site. In the same room a few feet away from the operating table, the surgeon sits at a console and directs the surgery. The console contains the screen, which shows the high-resolution, 3-D images of the operating site that offer greater visual capability.

Experience Matters

The endowrist instruments worn on the surgeon’s wrist and hands allow for 360° rotation with precise response, inside the patient and in real time, to the surgeon’s actual hand movements.

Dr. Butler explained, “It is important to understand that like any newer technology, the robot is not an appropriate choice for every operation. It is a tool, however, that when properly used, very favorably influences the course and outcome of the procedure.”

Benefits of a robotic procedure versus a laparoscopic procedure include superior dexterity (because robotic instruments can fully rotate and have more flexibility than a human hand), enhanced visualization (because the console’s screen magnifies the image of the operating site), and incomparable access (since the robot can access areas a human cannot).

Surgeons at SFBH have expertise in performing all types of surgery—traditional, laparoscopic and robotic. With the patient’s best outcome and shorter recovery in mind, the medical team helps to select the best surgical approach for each situation.

No matter what type of surgery the doctor performs, the goal is to treat the condition and get the patient back to his or her daily routine, pain-free and as quickly as possible. Dr. Hall explained why he is such a strong proponent of the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System. “Operations are safer because visualization is so much better. It offers the least invasive way to do surgery and patients recover quickly.”

Benefits to patients of robotic surgery include less blood loss and need for transfusion, less risk of infection, shorter hospital stay and recovery, and smaller, less visible scars.

THE HAY DEPOT P WRITTEN BY: CHERYL JOHNSTON

hil Hicks, owner of The Hay Depot, has many reasons to be thankful. The Plant City native calls himself and his business “blessed and fortunate enough to continue to go and grow” in economic times when many are struggling. Admittedly, he adds, “I couldn’t have done this without the help and support of my family.”

Hicks has another very important reason to celebrate. On May 24th he will marry his fiancé and helpmate, Shannon Maddox, who he met when delivering hay for her horses. Shannon now works alongside Phil, assisting customers near and far and adding new accounts daily. The company’s slogan, “From our farm to your barn!” is a great descriptor. The Hay Depot specializes in animal nutrition and works diligently to procure the finest hay, feeds, nutrients, supplements, fences, grooming products and other supplies. Hicks aims to provide “the BEST HAY at the BEST PRICES with the BEST of Customer Service.” And according to his customers, he does it well. To those compliments he adds, “Thanks to loyal customers, old and new, we are pleased to celebrate four years of month after month increases.” What Hicks loves most about his work is “dealing with farm folks who are downto-earth, honest, and hardworking. They don’t expect things handed to them and

our family enjoys following their families as they grow through life.” He serves also as a competent, reliable mentor and product consultant. The PCHS graduate (‘79) was always active in FFA and learned, like many Hay Depot customers, to “grow vegetables, raise cows and horses, care for animals, appreciate nature and respect and relate to people.”

As a result, the company offers frequent support to youth agricultural programs and related fair/festival projects. Hicks believes, “If you keep a kid busy, you keep them out of trouble. So, supporting their causes is an investment in our future.” As a hay buyer, he knows customers need to spend their hard-earned money wisely for the most cost effective, necessary animal nutrition. BUSINESS » EDWARD JONES

SOMETIMES THE PATH IS HARD TO SEE. T SUBMITTED BY: EDWARD JONES

he pace of job growth is a key measure of the health of the economy, and high unemployment is a top concern for most Americans. So the monthly jobs report is watched closely and reported widely, even when a single month’s numbers may not provide much direction. That’s the case with April’s jobs report, which in our view shows the job market continued to climb very slowly out of the deep valley created by the Great Recession.

MODEST APRIL JOB GROWTH DISAPPOINTS

Investors were disappointed by the April jobs report. Payroll employment rose 115,000, smaller than the 160,000 gain expected, according to Bloomberg. However, revisions to the February and March jobs reports added 53,000 jobs, essentially making up the difference.

decline was due to a shrinking labor force rather than an increase in the number of employed.

MOVING SLOWLY BUT STILL ON THE PATH

We all know that in many situations, a lack of substantial progress each time you look can be interpreted as losing ground. But if you’re climbing a mountain, the trail can flatten out for a while. You’re still gaining elevation even though it may be hard to see where the path is headed. We think that’s how long-term investors should interpret April’s jobs report. You’ll undoubtedly hear a lot of worrisome predictions, and it may be frustrating that the future paths for jobs, the economy and the market aren’t obvious – but remember, they rarely are.

Moreover, the longer-term picture is encouraging. The economy added almost 1.2 million jobs in the last six months, double the 633,000 added in the previous six months. While payroll growth has slowed recently, its pace and momentum support our expectations for a continuation of modest economic growth.

We’ve been on many similar paths before, and historically, they’ve continued slowly up the mountain, moving together but not smoothly. We think investors who have clear long-term financial goals and have built appropriately diversified portfolios are well-positioned to keep their balance, even if we experience bumpier terrain in the short term.

In addition, the unemployment rate dropped from 8.2% to 8.1% in April, down from its peak of 10% in October 2009. That’s a positive trend, even though April’s

Plant City Mortgage Corporation is offering NO EQUITY REFINANCE loans. Let me be very clear, if you do not take advantage of this window of opportunity, you are literally throwing your money away each month on needless interest payments Common Questions • So can you refinance a $300,000 loan on a home worth $50,000? Yes • I don’t have mortgage insurance now, do I have to add it since I am now over 80%? No • If I have mortgage insurance now, does it come off? No • **Do I need to bring money for closing? In most cases not one penny. On Fannie Mae loans, you never do, on some Freddie Mac loans you may need to**. • My lender (or whomever) said I am not eligible. Many lenders either do not participate in this program, or have their own self-imposed “overlays” that are simply not a requirement of the program. We have no overlays. • I don’t want to extend my loan out for another 30 years. You don’t have to. For example, should you do nothing at all and your current payment is say 1000 you have 24 years left on a 30 year mortgage (you have been paying for 6 years) , You can refinance to a 15 year mortgage OR refinance to a lower rate 30 year mortgage. New payment is 800. Keep sending in 1000 as you were before and pay your loan off YEARS sooner than the 24 years you were going to pay with the exact same money.

here is value in practically everything we touch, hear, see, feel and taste. We base many of our decisions and choices on the value of a particular thing; how it makes us feel; the emotions solicited, etc. My question is: How are you creating value? How do you give something relative worth or merit? Does it have to cost money to give it relative merit? Let’s say there is a neighborhood street with three homes listed for sale by different real estate agents. All three homes are relatively comparable in size, age, appearance and condition and upgrades. The homes are priced for sale at $200,000, $219,900 and $189,900. Where is the value for the buyer? How does the seller create value when there is $30,000 between the lowest and highest prices? What about your professional value? Do you know what makes you valuable in your profession? In other words, what is your value proposition? What makes you

different from everyone else in your field of expertise? I often ask the agents, “Why would I list my home with you?” I’m listening for 2-3 sentences that are going to set them apart from their competition. As a human being, you have value to your family, your home, your friends and colleagues. Your goal for each day should be to do something that creates value. There is no dollar amount for that kind of value. It’s virtual, spiritual, physical; anything but monetary. Invaluable value. That is what I love about the real estate business. Everything we do helps to create value; value in our relationships with customers, our neighborhoods, our community, our homes and ourselves. Are you creating value? If you have real estate questions, please feel free to call me during normal business hours, 813-754-3586.

SPORTS » BASEBALL Following the Pitch, Hit and Run competition, a Home Run Derby was held, followed by the Midseason Classic. Both are fashioned after MLB’s Home Run Derby and annual All Star game. This year’s winner was Austin Eldridge, who clubbed seven home runs in the final round. Runner-up was Will Johnson with six. The Midseason classic was a hitters’ affair with the American League outlasting the National League 12-10. Rosters for both teams were filled from the eight teams that comprise the majors division. According to Tate Whatley, Morrow Steel coach, the selections of players were special because, “The boys picked the teams themselves. Three players from each team were voted on by their teammates to participate.”

ncouraged by the success of the National Football League’s Punt, Pass, and Kick competition, Major League Baseball and Aquafina combined their efforts several years ago to bring a similar competition to youth entitled Pitch, Hit, and Run. Plant City Little League became a host to the inaugural Pitch, Hit, and Run event held on Saturday, April 28 at Mike Sansone Park. “We had been trying to do this for several years,” said John Moore, a coach and one of the organizers of the event, “so, it’s finally good to be able to pull it off.”

And indeed they did. Danny Coton, a local Little League coach and the director of Plant City’s competition, estimates that between 75 and 100 kids, mostly boys with a few girls, competed here in Plant City. And just like the title says, the competition was in three phases. Pitching was a test of accuracy as

each contestant threw six balls from a designated distance to a “strike zone” target. The hitting portion was a distance coupled with accuracy. Each competitor was given three swings to hit a ball from a stationary tee. The farthest and most accurate of the three attempts was scored. The final phase was the running event. Each youth was timed in a sprint from second base or beyond, around third and through home plate. According to the MLB website, “Pitch, Hit & Run is the Official Skills Competition of Major League Baseball. It is a grass-roots program designed to provide children with an opportunity to compete in an event that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/ softball skills.” For Todd Vitelli, also a coach and a Little League Board member, it was more about fun, “It’s just fun. It’s good for them to come out here and have a good time.” Even though it is good clean fun, there are some rewards involved. The

individual Pitching, Hitting and Running Champions, along with the All-Around Champion in each age group and gender group, were rewarded and will have a chance to advance through four levels until the National Finals scheduled for held the 2012 MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City.

SPORTS » ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

WRITTEN BY: JOE BOWLES

TREY OEST D urant High School senior Trey Oest is getting what he deserves this year. Not that he didn’t deserve it before, but due to some bad luck over the previous two seasons, his combined record of 6-7 did not reflect how good he really was. This season, the Cougars ace has been stellar on the mound once again and he has the record to back it up. Racking up 82 strikeouts in 66 innings with only seven walks, Trey has held opponents to a miniscule batting average of .180. He’s on the top of the leader board in his district in wins (8-3), ERA (0.53), strikeouts, and innings pitched. Life is good for the talented ace of the Cougars pitching staff as Durant advances to regional competition for the second year in a row. Oest grew up playing baseball at Bloomingdale Little League, after he and his older sister Lindi (a USF student) accompanied their parents, Denny and Kelle, here from Illinois. His parents were both athletes in college on the basketball court. His mom’s jersey has been retired at Western Illinois University where she still holds several school records. So, sports have been an important part of the Oest family. When Trey wasn’t at the Little League Park, he was traveling. First with the Bloomingdale Classics, then with the South Brandon Blazers, and later in his teenage years with the Chet Lemon Juice. Being where he’s at didn’t come easy and Trey understands the commitment that has brought him to this point in his baseball journey.

“I like to use every day to get better. I try to work on something each day that I can improve on. I want to be the best I can be. Every day I am either jogging, doing elastic band work, throwing long toss, or

doing pitching drills. Before every game, I have the same routine that I learned from Randy Sullivan who ran a pitching academy called The Armory…he’s helped me a lot.” Oest has translated his desire to improve into action. Butch Valdes, Durant’s head coach, feels that Trey is the athlete that other athletes need to emulate. “Trey’s work ethic is beyond the typical high school athlete. He has become a polished pitcher because of his work ethic before and after games. He carries the same discipline with him in the classroom and has proven himself both on and off the field. He’s an incredible young man that future players will be compared to. He’s the man to imitate.” The results of Trey’s hard work has included induction into the National Honor Society and an athletic scholarship to the University of Virginia where he will begin classes in the fall. Hopefully, a professional contract is in the future. “I would love one day to play professional baseball, since it has always been my dream to follow in my grandpa’s footsteps. He played for the Tigers organization. My biggest hero is my Grandpa Em Lindbeck. Once he passed away, it pushed me to work harder and to never give up.” Life is good for the Cougar hurler and he‘s ready for the challenge. “I know that God has a plan for me and I am ready for it, whenever that time comes. I will try my best to make my family proud of me. I know without them, none of this would be possible.”

SPORTS » BEEF O’ BRADY’S, BASEBALL TEAM OF THE MONTH

2418 James L. Redman Pkwy., Plant City, FL (813) 757-0300 WRITTEN BY: JOE BOWLES | PHOTO BY: FLORIDA BASEBALL HEAVEN Baseball Heaven Bash. Some might think their strong showing may have had something to do with the fact that they were playing at home, as Florida Baseball Heaven served as host of the tournament. But the next week, without that advantage, the Miracles followed their second place finish with another runner-up trophy. This time, it was at Auburndale, at the March Mayhem Classic

Team members include Andrew Araque, Coleton Brogden, Tyler Donay, Jacob Galanti, Cole Hanson, Steven Hill, Nathan Hood, Connor Kovalovich, Brent May, Conner Murphy, Gabe Porter, and Malik Williams. Szatkowski is assisted by Mark Persails, Steven Hill, and Gus Araque.

BASEBALL TEAM OF THE MONTH THE MIRACLES 10-UNDER NAVY BLUE TEAM A .J. (Adam John) Szatkowski, a 23 year-old New Jersey native, came to Florida in 2007 after high school to play baseball for the Florida Southern College Moccasins, a Division II powerhouse and winner of 27 national college championships in baseball.

Graduating in 2011, A.J. wanted to give back and he found the perfect venue to do it. He is the youngest coach at Florida Baseball Heaven, a baseball and softball academy between Plant City and Lakeland that specializes in giving lessons, clinics, camps, and in youth travel teams from the ages 8 through 18. One of the bright

spots at Florida Baseball Heaven early this season, has been the Miracles 10U Navy Blue team, a team A.J. coaches. The Miracles have compiled a 7-1 record on weekend single games and an impressive record in the four tournaments they have entered so far, capturing one first place finish and three seconds. “The team has performed all season,” said Szatkowski. “We’ve pitched well and played phenomenal defense. They’ve been hitting the ball and have improved every week.”

A.J.’s quiet demeanor is a calming presence

On April 14-15 in the Florida Suncoast Sports Diamonds Tournament held in Auburndale, the Miracles took home their first championship place trophy with a 14-6 victory in the finals against the Central Florida Warriors. There was a bonus to this event. It was a World Series qualifying tournament, which guaranteed them a free berth to the FSS World Series to be held this July. On April 27-29, the Miracles tried their hand at a higher age bracket and brought home their third second place finish when they entered as an 11 year-old squad in the Winter American National Qualifier sponsored by Bullets Baseball.

in the dugout. That doesn’t mean the boys aren’t aware when he’s displeased, but he feels that players, especially at this age, perform best when they are relaxed and having fun.

“This team works hard but has a lot of fun,” A.J. remarked. “They’re playing as a team, and they get along with each other well. Really, they’re like a bunch of brothers. The only weakness I see is that they’re 10 years-old and still developing.”

They must be real relaxed, if how they have performed so far is any indication. For a team put together in January following a tryout that had their first game together in February, the Miracles have played like they’ve been together for a long time. Their team is currently ranked #1 in the Florida Suncoast Sports State Rankings.

Team members include Andrew Araque, Coleton Brogden, Tyler Donay, Jacob Galanti, Cole Hanson, Steven Hill, Nathan Hood, Connor Kovalovich, Brent May, Conner Murphy, Gabe Porter and Malik Williams. Szatkowski is assisted by Mark Persails, Steven Hill and Gus Araque.

H

aley Hayes can certainly be proud of her accomplishments when she soon walks the stage as part of Plant City High School’s graduating class of 2012. Her time and talents have been applied enthusiastically over the past four years to many areas including academics, athletics, and community service. Haley’s pace has not slowed even as her time at One Raider Place draws to a close. Haley has been very involved with Civinettes, one of the school’s largest service clubs, since her freshman year. The club undertakes many noteworthy projects including Lights of Love benefitting the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation, a fall canned food drive for the United Food Bank of Plant City, and Jules Burt’s High Heel Hike to raise awareness and funds for autism. Haley was vice president and chaired the Relay for Life committee in her junior year, which inspired her to run for president. She achieved this goal and worked so hard her senior year that she was honored with the club’s Outstanding Civinette award. Best Buddies is another service club that Haley embraced enthusiastically beginning

Many others have benefitted from Haley’s dynamic personality as she has participated in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ student ambassador program, March of Dimes walk-a-thon, and as a student mentor through Big Brothers/ Big Sisters at Walden Lake Elementary. An active member of Plant City’s First Baptist Church, Haley has volunteered as a summer youth worker and been instrumental in organizing a shoe drive that provided hundreds of pairs of shoes for the needy. Never one to ignore a challenge, Haley has excelled academically by taking numerous advanced placement and honors classes. As a member of the National Honor Society, she has shown that she knows how to hit the books. And, she also knows how to hit a tennis ball, as she has been a member of the girls’ varsity tennis team since her sophomore year. Additionally, she is a certified lifeguard and works part time at the YMCA. She especially enjoys being with her family and encouraging her sister and brothers at their sporting events. In the fall, Haley will enter the University of South Florida and ultimately hopes to attend law school. There is no doubt that with her drive and determination, anything is possible for Haley Michele Hayes.

The mom had been through foster care herself and knew the heartache of not having a permanent place to live. The Dad had always wanted boys to raise, but God blessed them with girls instead. Now they had a chance to give of themselves so sacrificially it brought tears to all of those in that ballroom. The part that ripped me up was a videotaped conversation with one of the little boys being told he could live with the Dunnes forever. “You don’t ever have to leave. You can stay here forever, “ Mr. Dunne kept telling the boy over and over. The young lad kept hanging his head in disbelief and saying, “No,no,no.” Mr. Dunn kept answering him, “Yes, you don’t ever have to leave.” This went on for perhaps a full minute. Then the little guy started crying and finally looked up at his new dad to ask, “I don’t ever have to leave?”

THE STORY:

Clinics such as these don’t make political speeches or pronounce social judgments; they simply apply faith-based love and compassion to the major screw-ups our world makes, and they do their best to mend the broken people. Believe me, there are a lot of broken people out there. And, contrary to myth, the vast majority of patients seen at clinics such as this are the “medically indigent,” the “working poor.” These are folk who work hard, pay taxes and try to stay ahead of the bills - but can’t even begin to afford health insurance. The Judeo Christian Health Clinic saw 35,000 such patients in 2011.

MISSION:

The clinic’s mission statement is as follows: “In the belief that we should do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God, the Judeo Christian Health Clinic provides free, quality, timely, and compassionate health care to medically indigent residents of the Tampa Bay Area who have no other resources for their health care needs.”

Instead of arguing ad nauseam, I’d recommend a field trip to volunteer in a free clinic. And then maybe some time listening to the personal stories of real people, families impacted by the decisions we make in Washington and Tallahassee, and via the manner in which we order our values.

BENEFIT:

Recently I heard a few of those stories at the 40th anniversary Testimonial Dinner

for the Judeo Christian Health Clinic in Tampa. It was one of those formal “gala” events, and the hall was packed with hundreds of influential and compassionate donors. My church – First Presbyterian Church of Brandon – is a big supporter of our local Brandon Outreach Clinic. In fact, we sponsored a huge dinner and auction benefit just a couple of months ago. But we still had a table at the Tampa event because the Judeo Christian Health Clinic is not only the largest and most comprehensive free medical facility in the

Hardly believe that such compassion exists in this world? Hardly believe that they can go about the business of healing without fear? Hardly believe that the word “free” doesn’t have to come with any conditions, or stigma? As for me, I can hardly believe that any resident of this Great Nation ever has to worry about the cost of health. The clinic can’t do this alone; and neither can I, or you, or any of us. But TOGETHER… Ah, now we’re talking.

ercedes-Benz has been making fine automobiles for decades. With the passing of Ferdinand Porsche, I thought it was appropriate to take a look at a car from one of the companies he’d touched through the years. He’s actually most well known for creating the first hybrid vehicle – a gasoline-electric, the Volkswagen Beetle and founding the automobile company that bears his name – Porsche. Porsche had very close ties to both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, and left an enormous impact on the automobile world. There are three different options in the E series: E350, E550 and E63. set itself apart from the rest. This sedan has a 4.6L V8 coupled with a twinturbo. Together, it produces 402hp and 443lbs-ft of torque. Now add a 7-speed transmission, and this sedan will rocket the driver and 4 passengers from 0-60 in just over 5 seconds. That’s something any serious driver can appreciate. The throttle response is spot on. This is one serious ride and a top-notch sedan. If you think you’re in the market for a new sedan, you must give the E550 a test drive. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. The price tag is something of another matter. The base price for this sedan starts at about $60K. As soon as you begin adding options, the price quickly climbs to the $70K neighborhood. But don’t worry; it’s a great neighborhood.

SHRIMP & CO. EXPRESS PLANT CITY’S FRESHEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT M

WRITTEN BY: LAURA VALERIANI

y first visit to one of Plant City’s newest restaurants was a pleasant and welcoming experience with food enough to satisfy any seafood lover. Located off Baker Street (U.S. 92), Shrimp & Co. Express is more than a quick lunch for the average person on their daily lunch break; it is fun, friendly and fulfilling. Upon first arrival I was taken back because it felt like I should be sitting on the beach rather than in Plant City. The colorful and vibrant exterior contains round tables shaded by beach-inspired straw umbrellas. The inside flows perfectly with the exterior with walls are full of beach themed, antique style signs.

Although it was the usual lunch hour rush, assuming I was just a first time customer, owner Eric Cardona was more than friendly while taking my order. He said, “We treat everyone friendly, like a family… we treat people like we would want to be treated when we go out to eat, so that’s what we give our customers.” The Cardona family opened Shrimp & Co Express in November 2011 and believes it is a great addition to Plant City. The shrimp basket I ordered was an excellent choice; the shrimp were tender, perfectly breaded with just the right amount of seasoning. The seasoned herb potatoes were cooked to perfection and the hush

puppies were moist and full of flavor. My appetite was fully satisfied. I was beyond pleased with my meal and not weighed down by the occasional grease overload one may experience from fried food.

Eric and Wilma pride themselves on the freshness of their food, “it’s all about the freshness of the seafood here” said Eric “The hush puppies, empanada, coleslaw, fried green tomatoes… everything is freshly made here… The food is seasoned here, breaded at the time you order it, so nothing is kept frozen. When you ask for the shrimp, we season it and lightly bread it and put it in the fryer.”

with spicy shrimp coleslaw and with hush puppies. The Po Boys, sandwiches, and burgers are served with a side and slaw. Side selections include French fries, red potatoes, hush puppies, garden rice and sweet potato fries, which are one of my weaknesses and these surely did not disappoint. If you are not a seafood lover stop in to try their burger, chicken sandwich, steak or sausage plates and enjoy the meal with a refreshing beverage or a cold beer. The friendly, family-owned Shrimp & Co. Express Restaurant will not disappoint.

The Cardona family mixes a little Creole with Caribbean and Cajun flavor, a mix of both Louisiana and Puerto Rico combined perfectly together. The family has their own recipe for each of their specialties. “It’s very important that everything we cook here is the same flavor, because only the family cooks... It is important that the food tastes the same every time our customers come,” said Wilma. The couple believes it’s important that the food tastes just as good the first time as it does the next. The best part of my experience was the affordable prices. The most expensive item was under nine dollars and each plate ordered had a generous portion. The baskets come with a side of choice, FOCUS MAGAZINE PLANT CITY MAY 2012

RECIPE Wild caught gulf shrimp are so delicious that they can be enjoyed simply boiled in a big pot of salted water. Just don’t let them cook too long. When they float to the surface, they’re done.

FAITH IN SHRIMP I WRITTEN BY: GAIL JONES

used to love shrimp. I mean really, really love them. As a little girl growing up on the Gulf, going out to dinner with my family was one of the high points of my life because it meant platters of boiled or broiled or fried crustaceans. And even as a scrawny little waif of a thing, boy could I pack them away.

Well, I’m not so scrawny anymore. No one would call me a waif, and unfortunately, I don’t crave shrimp like I used to. They just don’t taste as good as they did all of those decades ago. Or at least they didn’t until last week. Because seven short days ago, I noticed a sign tacked to the chain link fence surrounding the Tampa Shrimp Docks. Never one to miss an opportunity to find a good local food supplier, I swung a U-turn and pulled into the almost empty parking lot. And it was there, in a deserted loading dock, that my faith in shrimp was restored. Ernie Donini greeted me from the door of his office. And while his name may sound like a character from The Sopranos, or the Italian version of Sesame Street, Ernie is actually a southern gentleman and the second-generation owner of Superior Seafoods. His father, a coal mining Wes Virginian, started the business almost six decades ago. (Don’t even try to figure it out. That’s another story all on its own). “It’s the imports,” Mr. Donini announced when I explained my disillusionment with

the shrimp of my adult years. “Farm raised, fed rabbit pellets, and I don’t even want to talk about the crowded ponds and the bacteria issues.” “Yeesh!” I shuddered as he opened a small freezer and pulled out the pretty, pink, flash-frozen, medium-sized crustaceans that were as big as the “Jumbos” from any grocery store, and the ones marked “Large” that looked positively pre-historic. “They’ll be the best shrimp you’ve ever eaten,” he declared, not necessarily bragging, just stating an irrefutable fact. That night, I thawed a dozen shrimp and sautéed them briefly in olive oil and garlic. My son and husband were out of town so my only companion was my 15-year-old daughter who is, at best, seafood-selective. “Mom, biting into a shrimp always makes me feel like I’m eating someone’s fingers,” she said nervously as I filled up our plates. With minimal expectations, we both lifted a pink crescent and took a nibble. A hallelujah chorus exploded in my head, and my reluctant teen smiled slightly. The shrimp of my youth were back. Superior Seafoods sells five pound boxes of flash frozen shrimp. Mediums-$35.00 and large$43.00. Visit them at 2625 Causeway Blvd. Stop by and have your faith in shrimp restored.

Depending on size it’s usually just a matter of a few minutes. Rinse in cool water, then peel and eat. You can dunk them in a sauce if you like although it really isn’t necessary. But if you’re craving a good dunking, try the recipe below. It’s a variation on something my sister-in law introduced me to after she had spent time in south Texas.

Picayune Shrimp

1 cup olive oil 3 Bay leaves 1/2 cup melted butter 1 tablespoon dried oregano 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon dried thyme 1 small onion, minced 2 large tablespoons minced fresh rosemary 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco 2 tablespoons Worcestershire 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 lemon, juiced 1 tablespoon black pepper 1/2 cup dry white wine 2 pounds gulf shrimp, peeled Combine olive oil and melted butter in a saucepan and warm. Add garlic and onion and sauté briefly until just translucent. Do not brown. Add all remaining ingredients except shrimp and simmer to meld flavors. (Alternatively, you can just leave the shrimp unpeeled, which is messy but delicious. I think the shells impart more flavor to the dish). Place shrimp in a roasting pan or casserole; pour sauce over all and broil briefly 5-7 minutes until done. Serve with lots of bread. You won’t want to miss any of the calories…. I mean deliciousness! BLUEBERRY FESTIVAL DRAWS THOUSANDS T WRITTEN BY: KELLEIGH KLEIN

he Keel and Curley 5th annual Blueberry Festival was a huge success this year! The two-day event was host to approximately 7,000 guests who enjoyed beautiful Florida sunshine, listening to great music, sampling a variety of foods and shopping at vendor stations located throughout the property, Keel and Curley gift shop and, of course, drinking great wine via wine tasting cards, by the glass or by the bottle.

Keel and Curley Winery was started in the spring of 2003 in the kitchen of founder and owner, Joe Keel, a central Florida blueberry farmer who wanted to find something to do with his end of crop blueberries. At this time in the season, there are still a lot of quality blueberries on the bushes. So Keel asked himself, “what can I do with this perfectly good fruit, to use it in a productive way and not waste

it?” Keel decided blueberry wine would be interesting to dabble with in the family farm house kitchen. He started that spring of 2003 with 10 gallons of blueberry wine. The wine came out so-so, but drinkable. So he made 10 more gallons and it got better each time. So was the beginning of a company he started with production of over 20,000 cases of quality wines that the company produces to this day (www.keelandcurleywinery.com). The wine list that patrons can select from includes Dry Blueberry, Semi-Dry Blueberry, Sweet Blueberry, Strawberry Riesling, Wild Berry Pinot Noir, Tangerine Zinfandel, Key West – Key Lime, Black Raspberry Merlot, Peach Chardonnay, Dry Blackberry and Sweet Blackberry. According to Clay Keel, “at the Festival we showcased our new wine freeze that we recently repackaged and are currently placing on the retail market for any store/

hope to continue to provide a low cost, fun, family event for many years to come.” Keel and Curley Winery is located at 5210 W. Thonotosassa Road, Plant City, 33565. Their wine tasting room is open daily. For more information and Keel and Curley and upcoming events visit www. keelandcurleywinery.com.
