LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
One of the best things about Plant City is the camaraderie people enjoy here - in their work, neighborhoods and social life. We experience that here at Focus, too. In fact, we’ve just returned from a staff beach weekend to celebrate summer’s end and to kick off another great year of building our magazines together.
See why everyone is driving to Bartow to buy a car from TOM EDWARDS.
This trip was special for us. We wished a fond farewell last week to Tony Cartagena, a.k.a “Sweet T,” the graphic designer who’s worked with us for three years. Though we’re sad he’ll no longer be with us on a daily basis, we’re happy for his career advancement opportunity with Rooms to Go and the “special projects” work he’ll do for us from time to time. One of the beauties of small business is that employees become friends. Camaraderie in this town often revolves around our youngsters, great causes and community ventures. Such is the case with the connections being built now to support the increased influence of The Youth Alliance in our schools, both here and throughout the country. Please be sure to read the article about Mike Nelson’s new efforts and don’t miss an opportunity to nominate a caring adult for the 1st annual Mike Storter Award. The honoree will be announced at the Jeans and Jacket Gala on October 27, 2012 at the Strawberry Festival Expo Hall. Nominees should be someone who works tirelessly with the youth of our community, the way Mike Storter did.
Thanks again for reading through “your” stories and supporting our faithful advertisers by shopping local. This community is all about camaraderie, and we are pleased and proud to enjoy it with you.
Warmest Regards, Mike Floyd Got a story idea? Looking to advertise in Focus? Contact us for more information.

Mike and Peggy Nelson
THE YOUTH ALLIANCE S
ince 2008, thousands of Central Florida teens have benefited from hearing The Youth Alliance speakers share messages of hope and encouragement in school assemblies.
And now, the new Chief Operations Officer for The Youth Alliance, Mike Nelson of Plant City, hopes to make an even greater impact throughout Florida and the nation. The Youth Alliance (TYA), a 501(c)3 non-profit established in 1999, takes seriously its mission to “break the chains of poverty, addiction and under-achievement in the lives of youth across the country.” TYA desires “to help students overcome adversity and challenges” through their messages of hope at student assemblies and parent/community meetings. TYA’s board, staff, and volunteer rosters are comprised of fully qualified teachers, counselors, executives, musicians, professional athletes, clergy and business owners from around the world. Through collaboration, they inspire students to accomplish goals and encourage them to discover, develop, and apply their strengths, talents and abilities.

APPOINTS MIKE NELSON AS C.O.O. WRITTEN BY: CHERYL JOHNSTON
Effective September 1, Nelson will oversee nationally TYA’s day-to-day operations, train staff and leaders, and work with school administrators to plan, schedule and follow-up on events. He considers himself “a team builder and a teacher” and is excited for the future, explaining, “Last year we began training others to do what we do. Already this year, I’m working with more than 30 leaders from Texas to Missouri to Southern Ohio and states in between. If trends continue, we will have Reggie Dabbs, Seth Franco, and others speak to more than half a million students this year.” In Central Florida alone during a 7-day period in 2012, Mike and his wife Peggy coordinated 58 TYA events with school principals in Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties. This year those plus schools in Manatee, Pinellas, Marion and Taylor have already scheduled assemblies. For more than 20 years following Nelson’s 21-year Winn-Dixie career, the couple has worked with multitudes of teenagers and parents as Soul’d Out youth pastors at Plant City Church of God, where they’ve attended since childhood. Nelson is highly regarded locally and nationally for his dedication to helping teens become difference makers.
Along with local hero Mike Storter, Nelson had also volunteered alongside the Plant City High School football coaching staff to mentor and encourage the team’s players. Explaining his inspiration, Nelson said, “I love to see teenagers grow and develop, make wise choices, and experience success.” He dreams big, too. He was inspired four years ago after watching Reggie Dabbs speak to 18,000 responsive teens at the annual WinterFest. When TYA founder Preston Centuolo invited Nelson to New Jersey to learn how the organization so effectively impacts so many, he returned to establish Central Florida’s program and become our state’s director. Obviously, his dream has substantially expanded. In addition to the themed school programs, TYA also offers staff development workshops, family/ community night presentations, and K-12 anti-bullying lessons. For details, visit www.theyouthalliance.com. And definitely don’t miss TYA’s first annual Jeans & Jackets Gala in Plant City, scheduled for October 27 at the Strawberry Festival Expo Hall. Reggie Dabbs will deliver the keynote address
at the fundraiser, which will include a “Meet and Greet” with pro athletes and a memorabilia silent auction. Be sure also to locate the nomination form in this Focus Plant City issue to submit the name of an adult you feel is worthy of the recently established Mike Storter Award. Nelson and his team hope to pay tribute to one who has consistently sacrificed time and energy to help area teens succeed in life. To learn more, contact Nelson via e-mail to Mike@youthalliance.com or phone 813-719-0244. Tax-deductible donations to help The Youth Alliance reach local students can be mailed to P.O. Box 5017, Plant City, FL 33563. Dreams this big definitely take a village to accomplish.

MICHAEL COLE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY WRITTEN BY: ROBERT TILFORD
M
ichael Cole has spent much of his adult life learning the ancient martial art of Taekwondo, which to him has become a discipline and philosophy that carries through to most aspects of his personal and professional life.
Father and daughter Michael and Kayla Cole take a break between classes at Planteen School of Tae Kwon Do.
He now learns and volunteers to teach as a Black Belt instructor at the Planteen Recreation Center in Plant City under the instruction of internationally recognized Taekwondo Master Instructor Steve Reynolds. Cole is a patriotic professional whose sense of duty and service extend to the communities of Plant City and Hillsborough County. In addition to the time he invests in martial arts instruction, Cole also serves the community as a Hillsborough County Sheriff Deputy, going on 24 years now, and as an Adjunct Professor of Sociology at Hillsborough Community College, where he teaches Sociology. The University of South Florida graduate (Class of ’85) holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Sociology. Cole feels privileged to work with the underprivileged children here who cannot otherwise afford an opportunity to learn martial arts because of financial constraints. Even though the $25 monthly fee for
Taekwondo classes for children and adults is extremely affordable, it is still beyond the reach of many. But for Michael Cole, it’s not about the money anyway. When asked “What is in it for you?” Michael gestures to his class and responds: “It’s about ‘family.’” Indeed, the life lessons he teaches will help his students in all aspects of their lives later on, including school and career. In some cases, parents report that their children are performing better in school because of the strict discipline they learn by attending Taekwondo classes in Plant City. It’s also an interesting point to note that for Michael Cole, “Taekwondo” is also a family affair. His daughter Kayla Cole, 18, has also earned a Black Belt in Taekwondo and is formally recognized as one of the best in her age division in Plant City. The Plant City High School graduate, who was also involved with ROTC, has competed numerous times in various Taekwondo competitions and won many awards nationally. What Michael Cole and Kayla add to our local community is the priceless sense of service to others. It’s individuals like this father and daughter duo that help make Plant City the best place in America to live, work and raise children!

As a teen Burke enjoyed watching “American Bandstand,” the quintessential dance show for young people in the ‘50s and ‘60s era. LOCAL » FOCUS As an All-County Basketball player, valedictorian and class president at Plant City High School (Class of ‘70), Johnson was a competitor and leader. “Basically,” he explained, “my life was school, basketball, church and work.” He recalls a life-impacting global circumnavigation experience with World Campus Afloat in 1974 before earning his B.A. degree in Religious Studies from the University of South Florida in 1976.
BUDDY JOHNSON’S GRATITUDE IS PHILOSOPHY: GOOD T WRITTEN BY: CHERYL JOHNSTON
he gift of gratitude is definitely one worth giving and receiving. And because of that, Buddy Johnson is one contented and grateful man. He’s thankful for his family, his incredible hometown and his enduring friendships with some of the most upbeat people in the world. Anyone reasonably familiar with Plant City knows Buddy and the roles he has played over the years to help grow our town into the Main Street city it is today. Although currently not active in local government or politics, his heart will always be where his roots are. For those unfamiliar with Buddy Johnson, here’s a little background.

AUGUST 2012 focusplantcity.com
Buddy was born in 1952 as the eldest son of Evelyn and the late Elton Johnson, who established the Johnson’s family fame for great home-cooked meals. Buddy and his brother Fred learned by example to work hard, take risks and never give up as they watched their entrepreneurial parents operate their businesses. Buddy credits them for teaching him to be trustworthy - the trait he hopes defines his life today. Through ups and downs, but mostly ups, he has learned to appreciate and grow from whatever experiences God and life send his way.
He and Fred partnered in their BuddyFreddy Restaurants for the next 17 years. Johnson was instrumental in the establishment of Plant City’s Pregnancy Care Center and along with Merle Henry, Bill Mellon, Don Walden, Lou McGrath and others, helped Plant City be designated as one of the first five “Main Street, U.S.A.” cities. Joe Tomaino calls himself “one friend who will be forever grateful to Buddy.” As the USF Director of Major Events for Athletics, he credits Johnson for taking the program’s fundraising efforts to a whole new level as the USF Iron Bull Committee’s first chairman. Tomaino added, “Buddy really made a difference. No doubt - he’s a leader who helped people see that the university is building future leaders.” Johnson got a call in January1991, asking him to run for the Legislature. He served six years before deciding, in spite of an eye on running for Speaker of the House, against seeking re-election to be more available to his young children, who were then 11, 10 and 7 years of age. He calls that “one of the best decisions of my life.” For six years he was Hillsborough County’s Supervisor of Elections. His friend Steve Morris of Plant City’s First
Baptist Church credits Buddy for helping him to “learn how to handle the adversity I’ve watched him overcome.” Morris added, “Buddy is especially compassionate and has learned a lot through some very difficult experiences.” Johnson’s friend Guy Glass has enjoyed “watching the authenticity of Buddy’s spiritual journey as he’s moving forward.” Johnson has been active with Glass in the five-year-old Tampa Underground movement, a network of 70 house churches serving inner city families. Glass appreciates Johnson’s “loyalty and faithfulness,” adding, “we have learned so much together about how God shapes lives through circumstances and how we can be a help.” These days, Johnson is pleased to lead a life focused on his faith, family, friendships and a new business that provides a unique means to show appreciation and share hospitality. “It’s so easy to extend a sense of gratitude,” he explained. “My daughter Hannah’s song lyrics inspire me to practice that each day. They remind me to … Live life by the moment, not just by the day. Take it by the hand, don’t you let it slip away. Give it all you’ve got and go the extra mile. Brighten someone else’s day and don’t forget to smile! “And in the process,” he added, “I’m having a ball.” Be sure to visit the website www. buddyjohnson.com, coming soon.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE ADVANCES PERFORMANCE AT ELITE LEVEL SPORTING GAMES
As Terry Schroeder, DC, two-time Olympic silver medalist and head coach of the men’s U.S. Olympic water polo team – gold medal winners at the 2011 Pan American Games – prepares his team for the 2012 Summer Games, the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress points to the role of chiropractic care in promoting increased endurance, reduced risk of injury and enhanced performance. Dr. Timothy Ray, chair of the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS) Games Commission, explains that chiropractic care provides a valuable conservative, non-drug approach that meets Olympic participation requirements and keeps athletes competing at their peak level. “Chiropractic is an essential healthcare element of optimal athletic performance, enhancing every aspect of sports performance, from training and recovery to prevention,” says Dr. Schroeder. “We have witnessed increased utilization of chiropractic care at the Olympic Games, and anticipate that a heightened level of athleticism will result. For the first time in history, the recent Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico included
an international sports chiropractic delegation as a part of its core medical services available within its Village Polyclinics. Drs. Ray and Angela Salcedo, president of the International Sports Chiropractic Association (ISCA), co-chaired the attending chiropractic team, comprised of 46 chiropractors. When reviewing the progress made by the FICS over the years Dr. Ray shares, “True advancement is not simply measured by increased chiropractic presence. But when athletes realize the benefits of care and share their improvements with a trainer/coach, we can validate the value. Furthermore, when medical staff members learn how to interface with DCs, and discover that the collaboration eases their job and adds value for the athletes, we can further document the importance of chiropractic.” Special Note: Please join with us to PRAY for our 2012 – 2013 school year. God Bless You Dr. Dukes and staff

T
he faculty and staff of Life Christian University had great cause for celebration recently.
In a formal ceremony held June 24 at the Cynergy Church campus in Plant City, ten students graduated with degrees ranging from Associate to Bachelor. Several are also in process of completing coursework for their Master’s degree. Life Christian University, which is headquartered in Lutz, Florida, is one of the fastest growing Christian schools in the country, with campuses in 38 states and even several countries. The school is accredited through Transworld Accrediting Commission International, an agency that accredits theologically-based schools throughout the world. Working with faculty, students are equipped to become effective and morally guided leaders in their communities, churches, and specific ministries. Life Christian University understands that most adults have full time career and family responsibilities which tend to make scheduling college studies a little more difficult. With that in mind, classes meet weekly on Mondays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The program of Christian-centered classes
takes about 4 years to complete coursework for a Bachelor’s degree. LCU also offers graduate work at the Master’s and Doctorate level. Degree programs are available in the fields of Theology, Biblical Studies, Christian Counseling, Music Ministry, Church Administration, and Christian Education.
Students often find employment after graduation as pastors, ministers and chaplains. Some find their calling abroad and work with others in evangelistic and missionary work around the world.

“THE BEST OF BROADWAY” PRESENTED BY PLANT CITY ENTERTAINMENT P WRITTEN BY: LAURA VALERIANI
lant City Entertainment recently wrapped up a stellar performance here at its community theater location. “The Best of Broadway” was packed with an outstanding cast of local performers, young and old alike. If you enjoy musicals and live theater this was one show not to be missed. It was full from beginning to end with singing and dancing without a dull moment between.
The show was a musical comprised of popular songs from many popular Broadway performances, such as Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, Shrek, Annie and The Producers, just to name a few. The performances of more than 40 songs were wonderfully entertaining and short enough to keep everyone’s attention.
Director Domin Pazo loved the idea of a musical that incorporated some of his favorite Broadway shows. Pazo wanted to include songs from the classic and older performances, as well as incorporating new songs from recently produced Broadway shows. The cast of performers did an outstanding job replicating the original performances. There was uniqueness to each individual but for every song, the wardrobe fit the theme and show from which it originally derived. The song “Who I’d Be” from Shrek is one that stands out most. The audience got a good chuckle when the performer came out head to toe dressed as Shrek - a very cute touch to please the younger audience members. Cast members came from a variety of backgrounds, many with previous
theatrical experience. There was also a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and age groups, one feature I found really enjoyable. And of course, the children performers were adorable. Pazo has also directed several other shows in the Plant City are and says he absolutely loves it. He iooks forward to his next show, “Jesus Christ, Superstar”. Pazo has been involved in theater since a young age, but he now prefers to stay behind the scenes rather than onstage. Although musicals are more difficult to direct than regular theatrical performances, Pazo said they are “much bigger, more spectacular and I love watching the crowd interact with my cast at the end of a successful show.” Ethan Richardson and Kaden Olney performing “Consider Yourself” from Oliver. Tabata Bootcamp is high intensity interval training (HIIT) combined with Tabata (training performed in seconds, followed by a rest in seconds). We work up in levels for each exercise (work:rest) from HARD (40:20) to HARDER (30:15) to HARDEST (20 seconds at 100% maximal intensity). We then take a 30-45 second break and move on to the next exercise. We meet 3 days a week for 30-40 minutes (lower body, upper body, and core) and perform the same exercises with slight changes each week. My bootcampers also complete 6 minute true Tabatas (20:10) 6 days a week as homework. On top of that, I give them the nutrition tools to eat healthy with the Take 3 eating method. This is not a diet or a fad, it’s a lifestyle change. Body assessments (weigh-ins, measurements, and photos) are also done so that they can see their results.
TEAM ARTISTRY
I’ve had the privilege to work with the girls from The Artistry Salon and Spa ( Jana, Sherri, Stephanie, Tonya, Krystal, JoAnn, and Jenna) for the past 4 weeks. In that time, they have lost a total of 45.3 lbs. and have a total BMI difference of 9.8. They have come a long way in just a month’s time. They are all making great progress with weight and inch loss, as well as endurance. What was once very difficult is now a little easier, and will eventually become second nature. I love seeing the changes they are making and look forward to taking them even closer to reaching their goals. Whether we come out on top of this competition or not, they will all walk away with better health. There’s no prize better than that.
TEAM TECO
goes in to the second month of this ninety day challenge, two remaining members, DeDe Floyd and Angel Carter are not only still working hard at Anytime Fitness, but they are also losing the weight and gaining the energy they want.
TEAM ANYTIME FITNESS
So many of us are challenged with extra pounds and this summer a few people are working very hard to show you that getting those pounds off are not an impossible mission. Anytime Fitness brought resources, education, and personalized help to real
folks struggling to get their weight, and their health, in control. The first thirty days demonstrated just how challenging this can and in fact it turned out to be impossible for four of the six original people who signed up to participate on the team. But as the team
At the start, each team member was given a package of information and tools including a key to the club so they could have access 24 hour access 7 days a week to work out on their schedule just like all Anytime Fitness members. They were also given some reference materials including books and full access to the Anytime Health website where they track their diet and exercise activities. Finally each team member was matched up to trainers to work with them personally on their individual goals and meet three times a week to push for the most progress given the short 90-day window for improvement. Today DeDe and Angel are working with personal trainer Brandon Volden and are losing weight towards their goal. When asked how Mission:Slimpossible is going for her, Angel said, “I like how careful Brandon is to work around my injuries, but I really like the results!” At Anytime Fitness real people get help along the way as they work hard to get real results for their better health. The Slimpossible team is down to two dedicated people being trained by the Anytime Fitness staff, but they know that all the effort will be worth it as they achieve better health, more energy and a whole new lifestyle.
The TECO slimpossible team has been focusing on goal setting, calorie and protein goals, and outlining barriers to weight loss. Efforts are being made to make positive nutrition choices for life. Due to busy work schedules, most Teco team members are pursuing weight loss and exercise goals individually. The registered dietitian and personal trainer have provided nutrition and exercise plans for the group. Specifically, it has been encouraged that each person aim to lose 5% of his or her body weight by losing 1 - 2 lbs per week. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats along with portion control are part of the balanced meal plan. The personal trainer has been available to work with the Teco team to develop an exercise plan and stick to it. Like most challenging goals in life, results happen with hard work and consistency. The team has the resources they need to lose weight; hopefully plans will transform into action!

“You would be hard-pressed to find another school in Plant City with the teacher experience we have here,” said Todd Haughey, Principal at Advantage Academy for three years now. “I’m very proud of all of the staff; they work very hard.” Advantage Academy, home of the Mustangs, is an elementary as well as middle school, with classes from Kindergarten through eighth grade. The schooling is of no cost to parents and is funded through the state like all other public schools. Curriculum follows the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and certain different requirements are expected of each grade level. Some enrichment courses are fused in with regular courses, and music, art, physical education and athletics are also part of the educational experience.
While focusing very heavily on academics, Advantage Academy specifically focuses on the math and science programs, providing vigorous classes and hands-on, experimental learning. “We go a step beyond in these areas,” said Haughey. “If a middle school student takes advantage of all opportunities offered, he or she could potentially graduate with five hours of high school credit as an incoming freshman in these courses - Spanish I and II, Algebra, Geometry, and Honors Physical Science.” The school, with its 65 staff members, currently serves 160 middle school students and 360 elementary students. Located at 350 West Prosser Drive, each of its rows of buildings holds an elementary grade. Middle school is done on block scheduling with regular 90-minute rotations. Advantage Academy is an open enrollment school and uniforms are required. Like all Hillsborough County Public Schools, students and parents received the student handbook with rules and regulations. Before Care and After Care are offered for the daily cost of $3 and $7. To learn more about Advantage Academy of Hillsborough, contact the school at 813-567-0801 or visit advantageacademyofhillsborough.com online.

PLANT CITY MAPS OF 1919 W e have recently come across maps of Plant City from over 93 years ago. They were produced by the Sanborn Map Company in New York City, which had been producing detailed maps since 1866, mainly for the fire insurance industry. These particular maps include nine pages detailing different sections of Plant City as of April 1919, at which time the population was approximately 4,000. We are not going to write in full about the maps because we want you to get an idea of what the maps look like. Then if you want to see more, visit the Photo Archives & History Center and take the time to look over these maps and the stories they tell.
A special section on one map refers to the “Fire Dept. Volunteer, 15 call men and chief. Station No.1: 1 H&L truck, 1 hose reel, 500’ 2 ½” hose, 2 chemical carts in reserve, one 2 tank and 1 single tank. Station No.2: 1 hose reel, 500’ 2 ½” hose, total hose about 1500’, alarm by Whistle on E. T. Roux & Son Mill…Topography level, about 5 miles brick paved streets. Public lights, electric. Prevailing winds S.W.”
Plant City Water Works with its 90’ water tower sat adjacent to the S.A.L. Railway tracks about a block north of Baker Street. The newly constructed Plant City High School (1914) sat in the block bounded by N. Evers, W. Risk, N. Collins, and W.

Chipman Street, and the First Baptist Church occupied the NW corner of Collins and Mahoney Streets, later the site of City Hall after the new church building was constructed at the corner of Collins and Baker Streets. The Photo Archives and History Center is currently located in the building that in 1919 was the home of the Plant City Courier. The Fire Stations were in the downtown cluster; Station No. 1 was on the east side of Palmer Street in the 100 block, next to the “Livery”, and Station No. 2 was on S. Evers Street just north of the City Jail. The City Offices were on the second floor of the large brick building at the SE corner of Evers and S. Drane (now J. Arden Mays Boulevard).
There were three hotels on the downtown map – the Hotel Colonial at 114 W. Reynolds Street, (note that addresses have changed since the early numbering), the Plant City Hotel at the SW corner of Collins and Haines Street (MLK), and the elegant Roselawn Hotel at the corner of Reynolds and Palmer. There are many other interesting and fun facts to be discovered by studying these maps and we invite you to stop in and look them over or to purchase a copy for your own use. History is fascinating.

Plant City music lovers should be aware, if they’re not already, of the Clemons Road band and their fast-growing fan base. This group of seven talented locals can lay claim to the fact that their first demo CD, which is entitled “From Florida with Love,” was produced locally by a Grammy-Award winning songwriter.
That songwriter would be Cliff Brown, the band’s founder. He earned the Grammy
Award in 2007 for the song “No One Will Do” on Mary J. Blige’s album The Breakthrough.

Clemons Road recorded the seven songs on “From Florida with Love” in a small room in Brown’s home studio in Plant City. Brown and Josh High, friends since high school, are “the heart of the band,” according to the other five members. This friendship is evident during shows and interviews as the two respond easily, passing the baton back and forth to fill in the blanks when questioned about the hows, whats, and what fors for Clemons Road. Enjoy reading their responses and learn a little more about this group before they bec0me famous. They would appreciate your continued support. As you follow the band’s music and attend their shows, one day you’ll be saying, “I’ve known those fellows since before Clemons Road became a household name and now look at ‘em.” Focus: Hello, Cliff. Will you introduce the guys in the group to our readers? Brown: Sure! I’m Cliff Brown and I started playing at 14, after I found a guitar in my dad’s closet. I was grounded a lot as a kid, so I spent that times trying to teach myself how to play and sing. I write all our songs and sing for the band as well. Josh High, our in-house manager, plays guitar and schedules the group’s performances. Eric Long, my best friend, plays bass guitar and does vocals, too. His heart and soul is music. Chris Williams, our drummer, has played drums for 18 years and 13 of those were with Josh in different bands. Chris was also captain of the Plant City High School band’s drumline. Our fathers used to hang out together at What-a-Burger here in Plant City. Matt Richardson, our youngest member, plays guitars and sings. Gavin Baulac from Lakeland is our banjo player and Jason Baker from Ft. Meade plays fiddle. Focus: How did the band get its name? Brown: All of us, in this and various other groups, have spent time practicing at houses on or near Clemons Road in Plant City. During high school Josh and Chris were part of a group called Southern Fusion and they practiced in a building at the corner of Clemons & Coronet roads.
50
AUGUST 2012 focusplantcity.com
Eric and I practiced nearby in a different band. Chris’s parents, Billy and Laurel Williams, let us practice at their home in Coronet, which is where we made our music video. That road is a part of all of our history and it means something to us - reminds us of our roots. Focus: How did you get together and begin to organize for steady work with the band? Brown: Several of us went to Plant City High School at the same time, so we’ve grown up together. After high school, I made my family nervous when I spent $17,000 of college money in 20 minutes on band equipment (and I shopped local, of course). I worked under contract for Warner Bros. and wrote and produced songs all over the country. When we decided to make a go of Clemons Road, I called all the best musicians in the area to ask if the were interested in joining a band. As we practiced and could see that our personalities meshed, I e-mailed everyone in the group, explaining the expectations we had and asked them to bow out if playing would only be a pastime. We wanted a serious commitment to every member of the group, to practices, shows, and to building the fan base together. We are all focused on this work and ultimately want to earn our livings making music. This is not a hobby; it’s what we want to do for the rest of our lives.
Focus: What were some of your early musical influences? Brown: Listening to the music our parents loved, for sure. Then we began to discover our own favorites and preferences. Josh and I love listening to chicken pickin’ guitar players, so Vince Gill and Brent Mason have influenced us as well. Growing up in Florida, we’ve been surrounded by water and beach sounds and tropical beats So, naturally, we like Bob Marley and Jimmy Buffet. The Eagles, Alabama, the Zack Brown Band, Sublime, Kenny Chesney and Alan Jackson have also been influences in our blended style. High: I was always around instruments and music as a kid. My uncle owned a vintage guitar shop in Orlando, so I learned a lot about guitars and playing during that time. Long: My dad has had a band since the ‘80s, the Jealous Guys. They were originally known as Running Hard. They played southern rock and blues. I’ve played with Cliff 15 years. Richardson: My brother bought a Metallica “Reload” album and I played it front and back every morning. My parents gave me a guitar, amp and radio for Christmas and said, “Teach yourself to play,” so I did. Williams: Josh and I have played in different bands for 13 years and I was in his wedding. Matt is my brother-inlaw’s brother. Focus: So, were you totally confident performers during your high school years? Brown: No, but we enjoyed music so much it didn’t matter. We just kept doing what we love. Focus: Cliff, do the songs you write revolve around certain themes? Brown: Not necessarily. I can sing about anything. We try to tap into different perspectives on life. For example, the song ‘Hey Bartender’ is about a man who’s depressed over lost love. By the song’s end, he’s talking to ‘Hey There, Preacher’ hoping faith will help him through. ‘The World’s Gone Crazy’ involves the perspective of life’s
purpose. We can work hard, use our talents and pay the price, but ultimately, it boils down to a dependence on God and trusting in what He has planned for us. Focus: Do you think the group is headed to Nashville? Brown: Eric and I used to live in Nashville together. We think at some point we may have to go back, but we want to bring Nashville here. We have the tools and talents to do it right here. We’re all happy to be living in Florida. Focus: Can you describe the thrill of being onstage and doing what you love? Long: It’s a huge adrenalin rush. Brown: We respond to the crowd and feel their energy, which fuels us. Williams: We want to put on a show and we like to see them dance. Focus: How about your fans? Brown: Our fans are nuts in a good way and they go to great lengths to promote our music. Radio station 97 Country 103.5 received more than 500 requests for one of our songs. When we played our first show (at O’Briens in Plant City), the fire marshal was called because so many fans showed up, it was over the occupancy limit! People were parking at the gas station across the street. It was nuts! Long: We love our fans and try to think of them as friends and family. They’re known as the Clemons Road Army. Playing at the stadium for the City’s Fourth of July celebration was great. We want people to come out and have a good time with us and enjoy each other. High: Honestly, our fans are the biggest thing we have going for us at the moment. It sounds cliché, but we wouldn’t be able to have 1,200 Facebook fans and almost 10,000 YouTube views if it weren’t for their loyalty. They have elevated us and they motivate us. People ask us all the time, “How do you keep getting new fans every day?” We are so appreciative of their support.
Williams: The fans purchased tickets and came out in a big way when we produced our first music video at my dad’s property. That helped us with the funds to make our demo CD and pay Jesse Starr of www.jessestarr.com and Wrap It Up Tampa for the cover art. Fans love it. Focus: What advice can you offer other young musicians who are following your career? Brown: Practice your music and persevere. Don’t give up. Nobody will ‘give’ you anything. You have to go after it and work hard. Get a job, make money and invest in your band. You will need CDs to sell, so the fans get something in their hands to remember you by and share. Focus: Speaking of jobs, you are each employed in a field other than music, right? Brown: I’m a Deputy Sherriff for Hillsborough County and work nights at the Faulkenberg Jail. I just want to make sure to thank the Sheriff ’s Department. The support and encouragement they have give me to reach my dreams is incredible. All my supervisors believe in me and it’s amazing to work for an agency like that. High: I’m a bank analyst with a large national bank. Long: I own U.S. Body Source in Lakeland. We build more than 3,000 after-market parts for racecars and sell them on more than 50 websites. Williams: I use my Doctor of Pharmacy degree (from University of Florida) to work with Sweetbay Supermarkets and Manatee Your Choice Health Plan. Focus: What do you enjoy most about the business aspect of music? Williams: Cliff & Josh are big on social media and work at strategic postings, too. Brown: As for the business aspect, Josh is the heartbeat of the band. High: I like knowing I’ve done something to make the band work. I don’t like loose ends. We just know how important it is to have the support of fans. When they come
to our shows, tell their friends and purchase our CDs and T-shirts, we can invest that money into the group’s future efforts, equipment needs and operating expenses. Focus: Do your families support your career aspirations now? Brown: My wife April endures coming home to a house full of guys and working late night on music. I know it has to be hard on her, but she knows this is important to me. High: Yes, and the Williams and the Longs are total enablers. They’re so helpful. Sometimes when we’re practicing or getting ready for a show, they’ll even cook dinner for us. Focus: How can fans reach you and why should they? High: They can message on our website (ClemonsRd. com) and at Facebook.com/clemonsroad. We enjoy the interaction and do our best to respond quickly. We like talking to fans after our shows, and of course, we sign autographs. We’re on YouTube, too, and appreciate all comments and feedback. Focus: So what would you like your future to hold? Williams: We’re excited to be opening for Dustin Lynch, whose current hit is ‘Cowboys and Angels,’ on August 24 at Boots and Buckles in Lakeland. High: We’re working on our new CD. The plan next year is to tour. We have some great marketing ideas and sponsorships would be a great help. Brown: I want to do this full time by the end of next year. We hope to eventually buy a tour bus, have it wrapped and hit the road. It’s hard right now because we all work day jobs, too. But we believe it will happen and the fact that we can produce our own work is a huge advantage. Focus: OK, Plant City. There you have it. Local guys who will be bigger than life before you know it. Do them a favor and “follow,” “like,” “comment,” and ATTEND when you can. It’s our job as a community to “Support our local musicians!”

He received his medical degree from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, TX. He is also bi-lingual, fluent in both English and Spanish.
JSA Medical Group is the area’s largest provider of primary health care services to the Medicare population. The clinic performs their own labs and EKGs in-house, works directly with specialists in the patient’s network when needed, and is the only medical clinic in the area that accepts most major insurances including Medicare, Humana, and CarePlus. The facility currently employs four: Danielle Hurt, Receptionist, Cynthia Lorenzo, Medical Assistant, Sara Munoz, LPN Nurse Administrator, and Dr. Ruben Perez, Physician. They look forward to growing more in the future with the arrival of new patients. “We’re really lucky here,” said Munoz, whose medical experience led her to JSA six months ago. “The patients who come here are wonderful to work with. Everyone is so nice. They’re really a joy to work with.”
Recently Dr. Perez and the staff of JSA hosted an open-invitation Pizza Party, the first of many themed monthly community events to come. These free events are open to current and non-JSA members and are created in an effort to show the practice’s care for the community of Plant City and to make connections with others. Held at

But it didn’t stop there. Years later she was faced with yet another adversity…the tragic death of her 23-year-old son Adam. Devastation set in as yet another tragic event left her emotionally scarred. How would she conquer this defeat to move forward? She read in the Bible from Philippians 3:13-14, “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” This verse helped her see clearly that God knows what lies ahead even when we don’t. She trusted Him and refused to be overcome by adversity.

CALLING ALL WOMEN: DECLARE YOUR FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE! W e hold this truth to be self-evident: Every investor must plan for the expected and prepare for the unexpected. It is especially true for women because, expected or not, more than 80% of woman will likely have sole responsibility for their finances at some point in their lives.1 It could occur at any age, at any time and for any number of reasons. Every woman can and should be prepared to manage her own financial picture independently. A great first step is to establish credit in your own name. And no matter where you are in your life, there are other steps you can take to feel confident that your financial picture will work its hardest for you.
TRADITIONALIST WOMEN (MID-60s TO EARLY 80s) Ben Franklin was 70 years old when he signed the Declaration of Independence, the age of Traditionalists today. His “penny saved is a penny earned” philosophy guided the Traditionalist generation in their younger years as they grew up in the aftermath of the Great Depression. Today, 85% of Traditionalists are concerned about the impact of inflation on their retirement income.2 Again the penny saved comes into play, this time to fight inflation. Work with a financial advisor to consider building a portfolio that may include investments that provide potential for rising income and tax advantages to help combat inflation.
BOOMER WOMEN (LATE 40s TO MID-60s) Our constitution entitles us to, among other things, the pursuit of happiness. Fiscally, that would include having a financial plan. Retirees with a financial plan are more likely than those without one to report they feel happy and that retirement has worked out as they planned.3 While 8 out of 10 Boomer women believe having enough money to maintain their lifestyle in retirement is very important, only 18% feel confident they can.4
As a Boomer woman, your independence begins with having a well-rounded and written retirement strategy based on how you want your retirement to look, taking into account both expected and unexpected situations. If you already have a written strategy, make sure you review it yearly to keep it updated and actionable.
GEN XER WOMEN (LATE 20s TO LATE 40s) We are a country founded on equal representation. While many women are responsible for day-to-day family finances, they often leave the goal-setting and investment discussions to their husbands. That means their goals for themselves and their families aren’t being fully represented. More than half of Gen X’ers have outstanding credit card balances of $3,000 or more.5 More than 8 in 10 have a mortgage payment.2 And their list of other financial priorities is significant – from building rainy day funds to saving for retirement and children’s education.2 Both spouses need to understand their current financial situation, and both need to have their goals heard to avoid surprises later. So it’s important that both spouses meet with the financial advisor.

MILLENNIAL WOMEN (TEENS TO LATE 20s) Our country’s founders were forwardlooking people, and the freedoms they envisioned still impact our lives every day. Millennials would be well-served to take a page from their book and think ahead. Fully half (51%) of Millennials are NOT likely to invest in a 401(k) or other retirement plan, and that’s short-sighted.6 With the power of compounded interest over decades, even a small amount invested now can make a big difference down the road. Take advantage of your company’s retirement plan and invest at least enough to earn the company match if there is one. Or consider opening an IRA on your own. There are many options, and your financial advisor can help you find one that’s right for you.

At the most recent Homeowner’s Association meeting, Board Member Jon Courson resigned because he and his wife, Peggy are moving to the Florida Presbyterian Homes in August. Jon has been a vital member of the Board and the other members expressed regret that he was leaving. Jon has been a thoughtful, well respected member, questioning many issues and bringing forward important points to consider and investigate. Jon was the committee chair for the rewriting of the deed restrictions and covenants. He will be greatly missed by the Board and the Walden Lake residents. know the answer is yes, but I’m going to ask anyway.
Would you refinance your mortgage loan if I told you there weren’t any income or employment verifications, and that you could save money on your monthly payment within weeks?
It’s a no-brainer, I know. And, fortunately for many homeowners, it’s a very real option.

It’s called a streamline refinance, and with mortgage rates at historical lows, it provides a fast way to lower your monthly payment, and all with LIMITED PAPERWORK. There are several available now, including an FHA, VA and the Housing Affordable Refinance Program (HARP 2.0). With all three streamlined refinancing options, the refinance must be the same
kind of loan as the existing one. Also, the loan must be in good standing, and the refinance must lower your monthly interest payments. With the VA and FHA streamlined refinances, you do NOT have to provide income documentation, NO appraisal on your home is required, and you must have a timely mortgage payment history for the last 12 months. HARP 2 is a little different in that you must be current for the last six months, and you can’t have more than one missed payment during the last 12 months. Also, HARP 2 requires that your loan was bought by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac by June 1, 2009. If you’re upside-down on your home, or just want to save some money, one of these options might be beneficial to you. Consult a local mortgage broker to see what is the RIGHT CHOICE for you.

The Tebows lived for a number of years as missionaries in the Philippines, where Bob continues to have an ongoing ministry, the Bob Tebow Evangelistic Association. BTEA supports 50 nationals, who preach the gospel throughout the Philippines and stimulate church planting. Through the preaching of the national evangelists and the Americans who accompany Bob on numerous mission trips, over one million people a year are professing their faith in Jesus Christ. Bob and Pam also run an orphanage (Uncle Dick’s Home) in the Philippines, which has been home to scores of orphans since 1992. Pam is very involved in her husband’s ministry and coordinates numerous projects and personnel. Pam enjoys speaking for women’s groups, nonprofit fundraisers, and various events in many cities across the country, and is currently writing a book on parenting. The notoriety of the Tebow family increased when their youngest son won the Heisman Trophy following his sophomore football season with the Florida Gators. Because ESPN aired the portion of the interview with Pam that focused on her refusal to abort “Timmy” when she was advised to do so, she has been given a national platform to encourage the pro-life message. In 2010, Pam and Tim were in a Super Bowl commercial that celebrated family and life, which, according to a Barna survey, resulted in 5.5 million people “having cause to rethink their stand on abortion.” Pam is also passionate about encouraging women to trust the Lord with all their hearts for all their lives and to use the incredible influence God has given them to eternally impact their world.

BRYAN REED B ryan Reed has been interested in golf since age seven when he found his Dad’s golf clubs in the attic and started playing in the backyard. A Florida native raised in Valrico, he went on to play on the Brandon High School golf team, and his first job was at the Diamond Hill Country Club as a cart boy. From there, he went on to begin his apprenticeship in the PGA. He now calls Plant City home and is the managing partner at Chili’s. Since 2002, he has been in the restaurant business, a job that incorporates many of the experiences he had during his years with the PGA.
“I held almost every position at the country club until I started my apprenticeship,” said Reed. With the PGA apprenticeship, a person does on-the-job training, working through it while fully employed. The program consisted of three business schools, one week each, and a player ability test. After three years, he received a Class A membership with the PGA of America at age 21. Reed was a professional golfer from 1989 – 1996 at Schalamar Creek in Lakeland, and Head PGA Professional from ’93-’96. This then led him to the East Coast, where he managed the Spessard Holland Golf Course in Melbourne. Following this, his career took him Walden Lake Golf and Country Club in Plant City, and finally, to becoming General Manager at Lexington Oaks in Wesley Chapel, from 2000 – 2001. included overseeing day-to-day operations, instructing on all levels, tournament operations, staffing, promotion and marketing, member relations, pro-am tournaments, and the list goes on. During his golf career, he worked with numerous companies and organizations (“too many to count”) to set up and execute charitable golf tournaments. Once Reed participated in a fundraiser for Chi Chi’s Kids and played 314 consecutive holes of golf in 24 hours. The lowest 18th hole score he holds is a 62. “I kind of accidentally got into the restaurant business,” he said. “I took a hiatus from golf, and I was recommended to run a restaurant here. I had never worked in this sector of the hospitality business before, but I knew some things from working in the golf business.” After his break from golfing his first position was with the former Plant City restaurant, Cherries, and from there he went on to Chili’s. “I love it,” he said. “I’m around people all day, and it’s not a desk job. It changes every day.” “I would like to get involved with golf in some capacity in the future,” he said. “Whether it be giving instruction to my three boys, as a golf coach, volunteer, or simply having the time to get out a play a couple of rounds a week.” Reed lives in Walden Lake with his wife Donna and sons TJ, Clay, and Mason.

SPORTS » ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
WRITTEN BY: JOE BOWLES
TRENT LOTT T
rent Lott is Focus Magazine’s Athlete of the Month for August. The Plant City High School graduated senior helped the Raiders to two of their most successful soccer seasons in school history, garnering a state ranking along with a #27 national ranking, a district championship, and a regional runner-up trophy.
Trent, born in Brandon, moved to Plant City with his parents when he was eight years old. Since then his family has grown quite a bit. In addition to his father Rick, and mother Dianna, he is the oldest of four siblings who are also athletes. Jose` (18), is headed to HCC to play soccer, Chase (14) plays soccer for the Raiders and is delving into boxing, Rex (11) is involved at most everything that has a ball (basketball, baseball, tennis, lacrosse, and soccer) and sister Ericka (16) plays volleyball and soccer for the Raiders. Starting out in recreational soccer at the age of four, Lott joined the Plant City Lancers, a club team at the age of eight. He played with the Lancers for a year and then rejoined the team after a three-year stint with the Brandon Flames. Back to the Lancers for three more years, Trent then returned to the Flames for his final two seasons, while playing high school soccer. Although Lott has played other sports, including baseball, he is the most proficient at tennis and soccer. In tennis, as the Raiders #5 player with a record of 15-1, Lott helped Plant City advance all the way to regional finals en route to winning the individual title at district and at regional competition.

Trent defines the phrase “Student Athlete.” In the classroom, Trent, a member of the National Honor Society, was recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction as he earned a GPA of 3.36 (5.76 weighted). Academics were important, the court has been fun, but the soccer field is where the speedster really excels. As a Raider freshman, Lott recalls that he mostly watched from the sidelines, “I definitely remember hardly ever playing my ninth grade year. That motivated me to turn myself around and become the best player that I could be.” Since that time, Trent has adopted a philosophy that has been his motivation, “In life, those that succeed in the end may not be the smartest, the biggest, the strongest, or the most skilled. They may merely be the ones with the most heart… the ones who can hang on when others let go.” So far, Lott has accomplished what he set out to do nearly four years ago. This year in soccer, he was a Second-Team All Western Conference (Federal Division) selection and received All County Honorable Mention honors. His determination and success on the field translated into a commitment to play for the University of Tampa. The Spartans, three-time national champions in NCAA Division II, are one of the elite soccer programs in the nation. “Trent is excited about the University of Tampa,” Rick related. “That was his dream school… with all those championships. He’s always wanted to go there.” Trent agrees, “I am going to the UT as an entrepreneurial major and to play soccer. It is a great school… and it has an amazing soccer program.” Lott will miss being a Raider, but he still plans to stay close to Plant City soccer. In fact, after graduation, he hopes to use his skills to start his own business here in Plant City.

Everybody who could get there did.” He finally confessed recently to his mother that on many occasions he and Vernon would split 15 cents and sneak to see a movie at the State Theater (against their parents wishes).
G.C. Stanaland (R) fondly remembers boyhood days spent with Billy Daniels (L).

Strawberry school at Turkey Creek School (grades 1-12) was an adventure, too. Shoes were not required until students started 7th grade and Glendon remembers, “Most of us could run barefoot like the wind. Only sandspurs slowed us down.” School lunch cost 10 cents a scoop (or item) for Glendon, and GC remembers five. With his daily 30 cents, Glendon “usually bought a sandwich, chips and a milk, except on spaghetti days, when I just had three scoops of spaghetti.” They ate healthy food at school, too. The boys remember the neighborhood
“gathering on the lunchroom lady’s porch to shell peas for the next day’s school meal. Everybody lent a hand to help.” During the strawberry harvest, GC earned three cents a quart, while Glendon recalls being paid five. Both used theirs to buy school clothes. Keds canvas shoes were $1.98 a pair, jeans were $1.00 and khakis were $2.00. “To this day,” GC said, “I still hate jeans. I always wore khakis when I could.” They also picked fruits and vegetables to earn spending money. GC recalls picking squash for 10 cents an hour, while Glendon earned 35 cents an hour for picking peppers, potatoes, black-eyed peas and corn. They spent many happy hours in church and camp meetings at the Pleasant Grove Tabernacle. GC and Glendon love to share stories about their experiences with God’s grace. It is this strong faith and their common memories that encourage still today. Both men have celebrated 50-plus years of marriage, worked steadily to provide for their families and served together in church leadership. Both still appreciate their city and can’t imagine living elsewhere. And both are very grateful that God has granted them this many years as friends.

C Stanaland and Glendon Porter cherish their lifelong friendship. Their common memories range from boyhoods spent exploring the wilds of Pleasant Grove, Durant and Turkey Creek to raising families and from steady work to church involvement. Theirs is a story of small town life and big time faith. At 85, GC has outlived his twin brother RE. and many other friends, so he appreciates even more those who remain. Grove parsonage when his dad assumed responsibilities at the church. Glendon, who was born to Herdis and Myrtice Streetman Porter, moved to Pleasant Grove at age 8 with his younger brother Vernon after the death of their grandparents, with whom they lived in Palm River. He recalls tagging along with the adventuresome older boys, which included GC and RE, brothers Charles and Martin Matthews and James, JL, and Joel Faulk and Benny, Bryant and Lester “Peanut” Langford. Billy Daniels and Raymond Hodge also joined them. Their parents allowed them to roam the woods and travel long distances on foot, bike or horseback, as long as they were home by dark.
G.C. Stanaland and Glendon Porter have shared a friendship built on boyhood fun and faith since their youthful years growing up in the Pleasant Grove and Turkey Creek areas.

EXTRA » AL REUCHEL to an ER with a significant head injury it’s fairly common to order a CT scan to rule out brain bleeding which can be fatal. Under the new Affordable Care Act hospitals have been told they will only be reimbursed IF the CT scan finds something. If the scan is clear the hospital doesn’t get paid. If the hospital doesn’t get paid it will put more pressure on ER docs to scale back to use of CT scans. But if they don’t scan patients and one dies of a brain bleed guess who gets sued? The doctor!!! Is that what you want? Speaking of Obamacare--- did you see the story in the Wall Street Journal which put the cost of a typical state insurance pool minimum policy at between $5,000 and $12,000 per year? Who can afford that? The fine for not having insurance for the first year is going to be around $80. Let’s see…..$80 versus $5,000! You tell me what the uninsured will be choosing. And without their full participation the amount of money the government will need to keep the Affordable Care Act in the black will far exceed the money flowing into the program to pay doctor and hospital bills. One more little tidbit. According to a survey in a magazine published by the association representing emergency physicians, ER doctors are facing the possibility of having their salaries slashed by up to 30 percent in the coming years. Another survey for primary care physicians indicated as many as 35 percent will refuse to treat medicare patients because the cost of providing their services does not equal the reimbursement scheduled.
ER’S GETTING STIFFED AGAIN! D WRITTEN BY: AL RUECHEL
isclaimer! My son is an ER doctor so naturally when something happens in that arena I tend to hear about it right away. The Agency for Health Care Administration is sending out notice to all Florida hospitals and doctors that beginning August 1st the state will limit reimbursements for emergency room care to six incidents per individual for Medicaid patients. Florida lawmakers approved the change knowing the Affordable Health Care Act would

require the state’s to pick up a large share of Medicaid expenses.
Worse yet, according to AHCA, as many as one-thousand Medicaid patients in Florida use ER’s for their care as many So my right brain says, “Okay, six visits. as 100 times per year. Are you kidding That’s a lot of visits. Nobody should need me? 100 times? One ER doc told me that much emergency medical care.” Now whenever the temperature dipped below comes the fine print for my left brain. The freezing he saw patients returning to the mandate says the state will only pay for six ERs three or four times a week claiming visits. If that same patient comes back 7 or chest pains. That’s a sure ticket to at least 8 or even 10 times the hospital ER still has a free sandwich and a warm bed for the to treat that person even if they don’t get night. paid a dime. Here’s another example of ER docs getting stiffed. When a patient comes
I’m not advocating one way or another. There are tremendous advantages to providing health care to 30 million more Americans. No one should be denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions. Somebody has to do something to keep down skyrocketing health care costs. Something should have been done years ago. But it wasn’t. So here we are facing a new reality. Most folks are using the ER’s as if it were their primary care doctor. ER rooms are getting more and more crowded every day. Hospitals are being asked to absorb more and more costs. The average consumer is the one who will be asked to absorb the difference. And more and more doctors are calling it quits. Guess we really haven’t solved our health care crisis, have we?

EXTRA » DEREK MAUL Italian; she knew nobody there. On a whim, she sent Andrew a message. “Hi Andrew, I’m Alicia. We both know the Hudsons. Do you want be my escort to an Italian wedding?” Mr. Adventure said yes. So Andrew drove to northern Italy, ”crashed” the wedding, and introduced himself to Alicia. They talked non-stop for 48 hours. He ended up in the wedding photos. A few weeks later Andrew and Alicia met up in Vienna. Their next date was in Kiev. Then it was Tuscany. Later, Milan. Meanwhile they talked on Skype several times a week. Andrew joined Alicia’s Bible-study group, sitting in via Skype. It was obvious this relationship was providential.

When Andrew came home in April, he was on a quest for – in his words – a “Shiny Object.” The result was spectacular. My son has evidently cultivated some highly refined taste over the years!

This, I have to admit, is where the writer part of me simply can’t keep up. I don’t have it. I’m a good writer, I know this, but there are no words I can type that will more than roughly hone in on the emotion I felt – and Rebekah too – when Andrew passed on the marvelous news.
HISTORY:
I could easily go back to middle school and beyond (In fact, this story really begins in Atlanta, in Piedmont Hospital on a Father’s Day). But in the interests of time I’ll fast-forward to Bahrain in 2010, where Andrew showed up for his logistics job just after a beautiful young mission school
teacher named Alicia moved on to Kiev. At the base chapel, Andrew was “adopted” by the Hudsons (an American family who had also reached out to Alicia during her stay). Before long, the Hudsons told both young people they needed to meet. Andrew and Alicia, while deeply respectful, did absolutely nothing. They didn’t even exchange an email. More than a year later, Andrew moved back to Italy. In the fall of 2011, Alicia planned to attend a distant family wedding somewhere near Venice. She didn’t speak
What’s been priceless has been to watch this relationship move forward in the context not only of friendship, love and affection, but of transformational faith. By the grace of God, both Andrew and Alicia have reached this stage of their lives without compromising their commitment to live as faithful and passionate followers of The Way of Jesus. So I wrote them this blessing: “Andrew and Alicia, may the early sweetness of your love move naturally into the rich satisfaction that is a life-long journey. Take the challenges, the opportunities, the graces, the pitfalls, the surprises, the constant adventure, and meet it all head on with the faithfulness and commitment that characterize the kind of relationships that God uses to literally change the world for good. Love is – always – a choice; you have chosen one-another, and you have chosen well. God’s rich blessings and abundant, grace-laden, love.”

OMG, IT’S FAST!!! J
ust a few years ago, Chevrolet introduced a redesign of the Camaro. Other manufacturers had also introduced redesigns of their muscle cars from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, but few had the anticipation of the Camaro, and Chevrolet nailed it. As with all muscle cars, one dominating factor is horsepower. So this year Chevrolet upped the stakes and introduced the Camaro ZL1 – a beast of a machine and that’s no exaggeration. The 2012 ZL1 is the pinnacle for Camaro enthusiasts. So let’s talk about the things that matter. The ZL1 boasts a 6.2L V8 engine that delivers 580hp and 556 lb.-ft. of torque. It is the second most powerful

engine in Chevrolet’s lineup. The Corvette ZR1 is at the top of that list. The Camaro ZL1 is available in a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and features and integrated Eaton Supercharger. This supercharger delivers a ton of low-end torque and continues to deliver regardless of the RPMs. The exterior is set apart from other Camaros with 10-spoke 20” wheels and finishes that are - well, tough. They’ve included a ZL1-specific rear spoiler, a carbon-fiber composite functional hood air extractor with black accent paint, a chin foiler and ZL1 badging throughout. The interior is simply a continuation of
the performance theme. Sure, there are the typical conveniences like AM/FM and satellite radio. But the seats alone grab your attention. They’re built to hold you in place for those moments when you just can’t help but press the pedal to the floor and turn the tires over a few thousand times, and that’s just getting out of the driveway. Driving the ZL1, right away I realized the incredible amount of power at my hands – and feet, or foot. In just two words, it performs. The 0-60 time on this Camaro is just a hair over 4 seconds. Trust me, it was a blur. Even better, 0-100 in about 9 seconds, and that’s not quite winding out
3rd gear. Just think, there were still three gears to go. Amazing! I’m told – trust me, I didn’t try it - that the top speed is about 180mph. That’s performance. This Camaro handles very well for a modern day muscle car. The suspension is smooth, not nearly as tight and rough as I suspected it would be. Forgetting the cost of 14mpg, I could see someone with a fair amount of discretionary income using this as a daily driver but with frequent stops at the pumps. If you like the Camaro at all, and think that you might be in the market for a new muscle car, you owe yourself a test drive. The new Camaro ZL1 is amazing. It lives up to the hype and will make any driver smile. And, if all of this wasn’t enough… drum roll please…Chevrolet is introducing a convertible for 2013.

I was talking with my friend Philay who owns the best Thai restaurant in the area, and maybe the entire state of Florida (Thai X-press 921 Lithia Pinecrest Rd). Philay came to Brandon from Thailand by way of Utah (ask her, it’s a good story). She assured me that mango in many forms, from green and tart to ripe and luscious, And who can blame them? After all, I have known vegetarians who would occasionally swipe a piece of bacon and finicky toddlers who adored mango in any form.

LINDA’S CRAB SHACK THE PLACE FOR SEAFOOD LOVERS WRITTEN BY: DEANA GARRISON
I
n 1993, Linda and Ramon Garza, along with sons Stephen and Ray, closed the Riverview dairy business they’d been devoted to for 28 years and moved to begin a new chapter in their lives by opening Linda’s Crab Shack.
The seafood restaurant, known especially for delicious deviled crabs, has grown into a successful steadily over the years. The Garzas credit Stephen, the restaurant’s manager, for “always being there, in the back making certain everything runs smoothly.” And Doris Nipper, a dedicated employee for 16 years, is another who helps keep the restaurant going strong. Just recently I visited to discover exactly what everyone is talking about when they say, “The best deviled crabs are at Linda’s Crab Shack.” Really? Well, I wanted to know. Apparently, these deviled crabs aren’t just the best locally - they are renowned far and wide. They are so delicious that many people from as far away as Alaska come to little ol’ Plant City to order 50 or more crabs to take home. Ramon noted that
Linda’s Crab Shack sells more than 50,000 deviled crabs a year. Made with a 1970s recipe, customers just can’t go wrong with this special treat. While I was there a satisfied diner mentioned that the deviled crabs weren’t the only item that were great… “They have the best grouper sandwiches around, too,” he said. Menu selections include catfish, shrimp, clam strips, fried scallops, fried oysters and many more delicious seafood dishes. In addition to the plentiful lunch and dinner platters fit for serious seafood lovers, Linda’s serves up favorites for the landlubber as well. Fried chicken, hot dogs, chicken strips, ribs, and steak are just a few of the tasty options. Loved for its local flavor, this quaint little restaurant also offers a party room for birthdays, business meetings, or any other social gathering. Just give them a call in advance to set up your event. My favorite part about visiting Linda’s Crab Shack was watching the couple, who together for 47 years, have teamed

the group to mix and mingle with ease. They personalized their area with a festive banner declaring the “PCHS 1977 35th Class Reunion.” Classmates traveled across the county to attend the event. Traveling the farthest was Nick Glaros who now lives in California.
There were many other celebrations noted on the spacious, covered patio as well. Danny Miller and Greg Boyer with his wife Debbie of Valrico were celebrating the recent completion of a kitchen renovation project in Plant City. Their newly formed company D & G Designs specializes in kitchen designs and space planning. Tony Rodriguez of Plant City and Dione Mitchell of Brandon were enjoying their six month dating anniversary. Scott and Kim McElveen, members of the Class of 1977, were also rejoicing over their oldest daughter’s May graduation from the University of Florida and her relocation to New York City to work. Judy Martin, former Director of the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation was invited by friends to get “uncorked” and enjoy her recent retirement “Friday night style.” Many of the guests took advantage of the Happy Hour prices of 2 for 1
