Letter From The Publisher
One of the neatest things about living in a Main Street America town like Plant City is the people you meet who have invested years of time and energy into making the community a better place to live. They have such incredible stories to tell. Our staff had the pleasure this month of spending time in our office with Pat Pogue as we gathered information and photos for the feature on the upcoming 40th Annual Civitan Youth Parade.
See why everyone is driving to Bartow to buy a car from TOM EDWARDS.
As the President of the Plant City Civitan Club, she’s been involved with parade planning and coordination for the last 15 years. She’s also a wealth of knowledge about the major events in town because she’s been engaged in service in so many ways through the years and she knows everyone, almost. What impressed me more than words can express is how much she cares about this community and especially, our youth. She invests months into making sure each year’s event is even more successful than the last. Compassionate woman? You better believe it. Sadly, our community suffered several losses this past month in the deaths of Felton Williams and Marshal Chancy, two others who valued people and their city. The founder of Felton’s Market and the founder of Chancy’s Catfish Shack were both highly respected for their work ethic, friendship and generosity. I believe if we took a reader poll about how many near and far have been touched by these three, we’d be amazed and humbled.
Enjoy in this issue the photos and bios of the Strawberry Festival Queen candidates and the coverage of the Junior Royalty pageant. When I take my boys to the Youth Parade and tip my hat to Pat Pogue, you might just hear me cheering loudly for the young people sharing their talents and showcasing their groups. And afterwards, I will go home and grill steaks from Felton’s Market to top off a great family day. Hope to see you waving and watching from the sidelines!!

The ladies would like to challenge other salons in town to a friendly competition this year. Local » Focus Social Club, Kiwannis Club, Evangelic Deliverance Church, and Super Choice of Lakeland were also key sponsors of this event. The Key Club from Plant City High School came out to show their support for the drive, as well. They devoted a lot of their time before the event packing the gift bags that each family received. Coni Williams from the University of South Florida’s Center for Equal Health made an appearance subtly on the outskirts of the main walkway to the event on behalf of USF’s efforts to increase Cancer Awareness.
The items donated consisted of food (cooked at the event and handed out for free), groceries (packaged and placed neatly into distributable bags), toys for children delivered by Santa himself, clothes for all to rummage through, and more than 30 bicycles that were raffled off ! After about an hour into the event, Santa made his appearance and the children were allowed to approach him in a line of unison, one, two, or three at a time. Pictures were taken, and memories were made after Santa arrived on the scene.
Zavier Idleburg was excited to receive his toy. “Open it mom,” was his response as soon as he jumped off Santa’s lap.

Local » Focus The first thing you’ll notice about Miller is that she’s young. She won Season 1 as a 22-year old in summer 2010. She was born and raised in Poplarville, Mississippi, and still lives there today with her family. Winning MasterChef was no small feat. Thousands of competitors auditioned for the show and only 14 finalists were selected. Whitney’s charm and determination didn’t hurt her either. She worked very hard and in the end, came out on top as the winner. As the winner, Whitney won $250,000 and a book deal for her own cookbook. Her book is available now: Modern Hospitality – Simple Recipes with Southern Charm. Members of the board for the United Food Bank of Plant City have already made some of her recipes and loved them. Gail Lyons, this year’s event chair person, cooked a dish for a Christmas party a few weeks ago and said, “That’s the only thing Stoney Burke ate all night. He just kept going back for more. And there wasn’t any of it left.”

or the past several years, the United Food Bank of Plant City has held a Celebrity Chef Dinner in February. The event is designed to raise awareness of the need for food for those struggling within our community and to raise a little money to help them; all while having a little fun in the process. The first three years, Chef Jon
Ashton was the celebrity chef. Last year, Chef Joseph Bonanno (former New York City fire fighter with direct connections to 9/11) was the celebrity chef. This year, Whitney Miller, the Season 1 winner of the Fox television show, MasterChef, will be the celebrity chef.
celebrate Valentine’s Day, make plans to attend the event. It’s sure to be a lot of fun with a lot of great food. Hunger is such a need in our community, and it isn’t just those that are poor who are suffering. The economy has touched everyone, and for those volunteering at the food bank, it’s not uncommon to hear that their neighbor or close friend is suffering and in need of food. The children are the ones that tear at your heartstrings the most. Many children in our community are lucky to have a single meal a day. If you’re looking for a great cause to support, this is one of them. This year’s event will be held on Friday, February 15th at 7 p.m. at the Trinkle Center.
This year, the meal served to the attendees will be made by the caterer, but the caterer will use recipes from Miller’s cookbook, which should be a special treat for everyone. Miller will also do a brief cooking demonstration. Afterwards, a live band will be on hand and everyone attending is encouraged to stay and dance the evening away. What a better way to spend a Friday night. And for those of you who are looking for something to do to

During Adelson’s time on the City Council he advocated paving Plant City’s first streets, and by the 1910s streets were being paved with bricks as the first cars began arriving in Plant City. Adelson also was commissioned as a justice of the peace on December 18, 1917, until the next general election; he resigned on April 20, 1918. In 1924 he was elected director of the newly assembled Chamber of Commerce, which was organized at the Kiwanis Club’s prompting to revive the then-defunct Board of Trade.

The new Mr. and Mrs. Acree went on to have two children, Samuel Warren and Martha Lynn. They also served at Baptist churches in Kentucky, North Carolina, and Adelson was born on December 19, 1882, Florida for 40 years. Adelson began his career in produce as a buyer-and-shipper associate of Samuel Edward (S. E.) Mays, a farmer and fruit grower who was among the first to plant orange trees in Hillsborough County. Buyers simply made life easier for Plant City produce growers for several reasons: growers received payment as soon as they made delivery to the railroad loading platform or the farmers’ market, they did not have to send produce on consignment to the markets, they did not have to locate new markets in subsequent seasons, and In 1901 at the age of 19, Adelson was on they did not have to pay shipping charges. his way to Cuba and made a stop in Plant City for a reason not now known. Adelson’s passions extended beyond produce and civic affairs to sports, particularly football and baseball. His generous donations advanced completion of the ball field west of town, which was named “Adelson Field” in his honor. Adelson was also a major figure in bringing the Indianapolis Indians baseball team to Plant City in 1925, its first professional spring-training team. In his seventh decade and after five decades in Plant City, Adelson died in 1953 and was buried in Oaklawn Cemetery in Plant City. His wife Pearl died nine years later and was buried beside him. Samuel Delmar Adelson’s business integrity, civic pride, and love for treasured American pastimes such as baseball made Plant City an even better place to live. Youth Parade Awards program, shared, “The Youth Parade is fun to me because of the focus on the kids. For many, it’s their only chance to be in a parade, and I really enjoy their excitement.”
The Plant City Civitan Club is excited once again to celebrate the area’s young people in its upcoming Civitan Youth Parade, themed this year as “Our Masterpiece of Fun.” And members are exceptionally proud to celebrate the groups’ 40 years of involvement.

The parade on Saturday, March 2 will thrill and entertain thousands of families lining the streets to cheer on our community’s youth. Other than chaperones, all parade participants are 18 years old or younger. Traditionally held the first Saturday of the Strawberry Festival, the parade begins at the State Farmers Market off Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, a safe staging-area courtesy for which the parade committee is very thankful. Then it heads north on Alexander Street and concludes beyond the Reynolds Street festival grounds at Sammonds Road.

Members of the 59-year-old local club volunteer much time and energy to ensure each year’s parade is a success. And they are especially appreciative for the generous support of local businesses and educators. According to club president Pat Pogue, “We couldn’t accomplish this without the help of area businesses, schools, churches and youth organizations. It is a joy to present such a fun, family event to our community because so many have fond memories of their own experiences with or in parades past.” The 2012 parade involved 11 school bands and more than 50 other entries. Special banners will recognize the event’s 40th anniversary and Pogue expects this year’s parade to be “even bigger and better.” The parade committee also tries to involve outstanding youth from past years’ events, for example: David Walden, current Florida Area 5 State FFA Vice President and Roosevelt Broadnax, employed now with Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union. Walden, who will serve as emcee for the 2013
Clark Smith, regional vice president of Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union (SSFCU) and the credit union’s Plant City branch manager, appreciate the time and talent that Civitan members dedicate to helping local youth succeed. “Roosevelt Broadnax’s ability to serve our members with humility and pride has exceeded our expectations, and we see a bright future for him within our organization,” says Smith. Needless to say, this type of community feedback could fill a book about the talents of our area youth. Plant City Civitan Club members are extremely proud to shine a spotlight on as many as possible.

Grand Marshals
To be selected as Grand Marshal of this parade is a very big deal among our seniors at Plant City and Durant high schools. Each year the Outstanding Youth/G rand Marshal selection committee of Civitan selects two, one from each school, for recognition from applications submitted by many successful students.
The 2013 Outstanding Youth and Gran d Marshals are Paige Carlson from Dur ant High School and Robby Knox from Plant City High School. It goes with out saying that both are thrilled with the award and opportunity to lead the parade from this unique perspective. Criteria for selection involves scholasti c achievement, school/civic involvem ent, leadership, and other honors received . Obviously, community service is a key consideration in the process, and this year’s winners excelled in that category .

The Grand Marshal selected from PCH S is Robby Knox, eldest son of Ben and Kerri Knox. As a sixth generation Plant City native, National Honor Society member and PCHS Jr. Civitan Club VP, Robby and his famil y have a longstanding tradition of involvement in the Youth Parade. His grandfather, the late Benjamin T. Knox, was a Civit an past president instrumental in parade planning and his grandmother Sylvia Knox sponsored the Civinettes club at Plant City High School for a time and then joined the local Civitan group. Robby’s maternal grandmother Karen Robinson and mother Kerri were both Civinettes in high schoo l and Kerri received the 1986 James C. Billings Scholarsh ip annually awarded by Civitan. His father, Ben H., remember s helping out in the Civitan concession booth at the festiv al as a young boy. And in 2012, as the Florida Strawberry Festi val Jr. Royalty Queen, his sister Carly Knox greeted the crowds from the Royalty Float.

Along with earning recognitio ns for his photography in several Plant City Archives Photo Contests, Robby also referees flag football and basketball for the Plant City Recreation Department, is a member of Students Against Dest ructive Decisions (SADD) and is activ e in Plant City’s First Baptist Youth Grou p. “I am very excited to serve as Grand Marshal,” said Robby, “because I know my “Papa” (Ben T. Knox) would have been proud to see me in the 2013 parad e. And my great grandfather Jack Dem psey, who was president of the Strawberry Festival in the ‘70s would have been pleas ed, too.” PCHS College and Career Counselor Sherrie Mueller believes the committee made a great choice for Robby as Yout h Parade Grand Marshal. She explained, “The Youth Parade highlights all that is RIGHT with our youth. It gives our community’s youth an opportuni ty to be a part of a parade designed just for them. The parade allows students from all interest groups from schools to religious groups to athletic teams to show the community their pride in their accomplishments. The Parade Marshals, who are students like Robby, serve as role models by exemplifying good grade s, conduct and a commitment to servi ce.” As Grand Marshals, the teens will lead the parade riding in convertibles provided this year by Ray Young and Myrle Henry. Their job is to smile, wave and encourage area families that indee d, academics, community service and leadership roles build a stronger futur e for everyone. foCUS Magazine Plant City january 2013

Patrick’s Patriots Twirling Corps Among the parade’s faithful participants over the years is Barbara Patrick and her internationally renowned Patrick’s Patriots Twirling Corps, an award-winning organization now 52 years old. “We love this event,” explained Patrick. “It is a ‘Big Event’ for our younger twirlers to be able to march in. It was fantastic to march through the Strawberry Festival grounds and in front of the stadium. The applause and reception was so great we could hardly hear our music! The people were so appreciative and responded with clapping and yelling ‘Do It Again!’ We are glad to perform anytime, anyplace! We look forward to participating in the 40th annual Youth Parade and can’t wait to see all the familiar faces along the route! Thanks to Pat Pogue for all her hard work and everyone involved (past & present) who has made this event possible for our children and specifically our twirlers.

Celebrating our 40th Year! Civitan member Lamar Lockhart arranges for the out-of-town, non-affiliated judges who view the parade from a tent at the South Florida Baptist Hospital parking lot facing Reynolds Street. They award trophies to non-professional participants in four categories and they all admit the competition is fierce for Best Club/Group Float, Best Church Float, Best Marching Unit and Best Band.
The 2013 winners will be announced at 12:30 p.m. that same day in the Stingray Entertainment Tent at the Florida Strawberry Festival.

For the last 15 annual parades, Pogue has directed the club and chaired Youth Parade Committee to engage supporters of this great project. She’s been recognized as “Woman of the Year” by the American Business Women (2001) and also was honored with the “Good Egg Award” for civic activities by the Plant City Chamber of Commerce in May 2012. She’s been an Ambassador for both the Chamber and the Festival and served the City in various roles such as Special Events Staff, soccer referee, fundraiser, and chaperone for teen dances/kids night out. to Plant City Civitan for the club’s 40-year coordination of the Youth Parade. Noting that the parade “is definitely a joint effort,” she added, “The Youth Parade could not be a success without the support of Club members, the City of Plant City, The Strawberry Festival® and the Plant City Police Department. Police officers are in the area to close streets and control traffic prior to and during the parade. They have done a terrific job in the past with traffic and the safety of the kids participating as well as folks watching. She credits also former PCHS principal, Sonny Jones, who has been involved with Civitan for 50 years, since 1963. As the “go to guy,” he sits in the parade’s command center and ensures the event runs smoothly. As to his favorite part of the day, Jones said, “The excitement of the kids.” Pat Pogue agrees: “There’s nothing like it. I remember one year when thunderstorms caused us to cancel. One mother was so distraught. She told me, ‘I want my child to have the same experience of being in the parade that I had as a child.”’ Graciously, that year the Grand Parade invited the Youth Parade participants to march with them. And you can bet, they did. Please don’t miss this chance to see our kids shine in the 40th annual event because Pogue believes, “This is sure to be the best yet!”

lthough the game has improved over the years because of technological advances such as the automatic pin setter and computerized scoring, the heart of modern ten pin bowling has always remained the same—to knock over as many pins as possible using a large, weighed ball.
Yet the game has recently changed forever because of Plant City resident Anthony Cogswell. His unique invention is “equalizing” the playing field and bringing former bowlers back to the lanes. In fact, individuals who use wheelchairs or suffer from arthritis, carpel tunnel, or back, shoulder, neck, or wrist pain—people who used to bowl but no longer can due to disabilities and inhibiting injuries— can now join traditional leagues and tournaments with their friends and family using Anthony’s handcrafted, mechanical aid, the “Equalizer.” After suffering an unfortunate accident which resulted in severe tendon damage, Anthony could no longer participate in
“The American way is you find a way,” said Anthony. Consequently, the first generation “Equalizer” was born, an apparatus Anthony handcrafted from his own workbench that would allow him to play the game he loved without pain. He immediately took this new gadget to the local bowling alley and successfully put it to the test while drawing great interest from curious bowlers at the same time. “Initially, I made the Equalizer for myself,” said Anthony, “but then other people started coming up to me saying ‘I haven’t bowled since my injury’ or ‘I haven’t bowled since my surgery.’”

The quality of their services are excellent! Highly recommend you schedule a facial and a massage right away. You won’t be disappointed. In 2008 we added hair services, and in January 2013 we increased our hours of business offering two evenings open until 8pm and Saturdays open until 4pm. I’m very excited about the future. I am looking for additional skilled staff members to join our team particularly nail technicians.
How did you get into Business?
I guess you could say I originally started in the beauty industry in Plant City in the 60’s at the “Perm-nette” on Evers St. My mother owned that shop then. I would ride to work with her from Valrico at 3 years old and play in the dryer chairs, with plastic rollers and clips, all the while snacking on Lance crackers I’d sneak out of the giant glass Lance cracker jar. Many of my clients may have gone to the Perm-nette and may not even realize that I was that child drinking cokes from that old coke machine that you “pulled” out from behind the glass door, but its me. I did take a brief hiatus to sell tadpoles and citrus trees roadside before returning to my love the beauty industry in 1985. In 1985 I decided I would be the nail lady. Back then it was not regulated all you had to do is say you were the nail lady and you were. I took an ad out in the newspaper and walla I got calls. In fact Susan that works for FOCUS was my very first client and came to my house. It took me FOREVER to do her nails. Soon they began to regulate nails and I went to school for training. As the regulation continued to become more stringent I decided to go to cosmetology school and get licensed to do everything so that I would not be limited to what services that I could perform. After owning Nails Nails Nails for four years and expanding the service menu to offer waxing and cosmetics I thought it was time to relocate and change the name to something that better described what I offered. I wanted something that didn’t limit my service menu. Hence the name Tip To Toe. I opened in March of 1992 at my current location and will soon celebrate 21 years. Its been incredible! So many people to thank for this opportunity there is no way I could possible thank them all. But the most important of all I’d like to thank God for placing me here for such a time as this.

here are several perks for serving in the United States military. One of those is the VA streamline refinance home loan, which offers veterans and the spouses of deceased veterans a more “streamlined” process for refinancing their existing VA mortgage.
In some cases, homeowners can refinance without closing costs, but lenders will give a higher interest rate in exchange. It’s the old adage, “There’s no free lunch.” Other guidelines for the loan are:

In 2008-09, Fryear was an assistant coach at Flagler College in St. Augustine, followed by brief stints at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel and Windermere Prep in Orlando. When Fryear assessed the facilities and the baseball program at Plant City High School, especially after such a difficult season in 2012, he knew that the job was right for him. “I wanted to go to a place that needed me… a program that needed to be rebuilt. an Lawson is different. Not in a weird sort of way. She’s refreshingly different. Several years ago, one of her teammates, Chelsea Hanks, wrote on Nan’s glove, “It’s okay to be different.” Nan still uses that glove today and whenever she looks at it, she is reminded that she can be herself. Not a clone of someone else, but herself… as different as she can be… and it’s okay. Nan Lawson, a senior outfielder on Plant City High School’s softball team, is the kind of teammate you’d love to have on your team. She is energetic, spirited, and brings an acceptable amount of fun to the dugout. “Nan is one of those athletes that you always want around because she works hard and produces great stats,” remarked former head coach Heidi Kouveras. “She is the team leader and the comic relief of the team. She will be a positive leader for St. Leo and I will miss her personality.” Heading into her senior season, after three stellar seasons as a Raider, Lawson committed to play for St. Leo University following her graduation in June. “I had gone to a couple of camps at St. Leo and I fell in love with the school. It is not a large campus, it’s not too far away, and everybody at the school seems to be real close. They have a good program and I like how Coach Conway coaches… how he breaks everything down so you can understand it.” Lawson’s journey to college began at the age of eight when she played in a slow pitch softball league in Brandon. Before that, she was a cheerleader for a youth football team. Before Lawson turned nine, she was hit by a forklift while visiting her mother’s workplace, crushing her ankle. It was at that point that she decided that she wanted to be a softball player. Not sure why, but it’s okay to think differently too. The next year she had her first experience in fast pitch through the Plant City Little League. The next year she was an All-Star, helping Plant City to the

Florida State Championship in the 9 and 10 year-old division. She played two more years, also representing Plant City in 2007 as the Majors All-Stars team qualified for the state tournament after winning district and sectional titles. That was the final year of playing in a local league. From then on, she played for independent travel teams. First with the Plant City Sizzlers, then with the Tampa Heat Wave, the New Tampa Predators, a revised version of the Tampa Heat Wave, and the Pride, before finally settling with Florida Baseball Heaven’s Lady Angels for two years. At some point during her freshman year, Lawson earned a starting role. In 2011, as a sophomore, Lawson was named to Focus Magazine’s All District second team and was also a Tampa Tribune All County Honorable Mention selection. In 2012, she was a second team All Western Conference Federal Division selection and received Honorable Mention All County honors. In her junior campaign, Lawson hit .407 with 14 runs, 10 RBIs, 1 home run and 13 stolen bases. In the classroom, Lawson carries a 4.8 GPA. She is also the corresponding secretary for the National Honor Society and the co-founder and vice president of the Ronald McDonald Charity House Club. An education major, Lawson plans to turn her love for kids into a profession as a kindergarten teacher. No doubt, her classroom will be different… and that’s okay.

At the high school level, both Plant City and Strawberry Crest boys’ soccer teams made it to the FHSAA regional quarterfinals. The Plant City girls’ soccer team advanced to the regional semifinals before falling to a tough Seminole squad 2-1. Durant’s other team that plays on a diamond made it to FHSAA’s baseball quarterfinal before a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Wharton. Durant’s football team had a magical season as well, as they ended the regular season undefeated (10-0) with their only loss coming in the regional tournament.

rom October of 2009 until mid 2012, the Focus Magazine has featured a “Baseball Team of the Month.” Due to a change in sponsorship, however, over the last few months we have altered this distinction to include all sports teams. So, now each month, we honor a team from any sport as our “Sports Team of the Month.” As many do when the calendar changes from one year to the next, we too have reflected on our community’s sports highlights. And, one team accomplishment rises a little higher than the rest. Therefore, as we reflect on our area sports teams through 2012, we have chosen the Durant High School Cougars girls’ softball team as Focus Magazine’s “Sports Team of the Year.” The Cougars captured the Florida

High School Athletic Association’s Class 8A State Championship with a myriad of comeback wins in the playoffs. Surviving a mid-season slump of three consecutive district losses, the Cougars then reeled off ten straight wins to claim their first team state championship in school history. Other candidates under consideration for the 2012 Sports Team of the Year were several youth teams. In baseball, a case could be made for the 7-8 year-old Plant City Little League Machine Pitch Bulldogs All Stars who ended the summer with a 16-4-1 record in five tournaments, winning three championships and placing second in another. Or, the Florida Baseball Heaven 12U Navy Blue Miracles, who captured most of the tournaments they entered
during the year as they took first place in five of the first six tournaments they played. Durant’s toughest competition for Sports Team of the Year, however, came from two Plant City Little League All Star teams. After the 10-11 year-old team captured their second consecutive state tournament, they ventured to Greenville, N.C. and picked up their second consecutive southeastern title, winning the Tournament of State Champions once again. The 1112 year-old team progressed further than any other P.C.L.L. All Star Majors team in history, as they also captured the state tournament and were a just few runs shy of the Little League World Series as they fell in the Southeast Regional in early August.
As well as all of our area teams performed in 2012, none captured the heart of the community quite like the “comeback kids” from Durant. After surviving several close calls in both the district and the regional tournaments, Coach Matt Carter’s Cougars also survived an early deficit and a 70-minute rain delay on May 14, before putting away Miami Palmetto 8-2 and claiming the state championship, a 24-4 record, and a #22 national ranking. Team members include: Shannon Bell, Alyssa Colding, Mason Hubbard, Melissa Mertely, Paige Davis. Olivia Cuellar, Kelli Tidwell, Mandy Morris, Nikki Giovenco, Brooke Freeman, Maddie Taylor, Cassidy Sorrells, Caylin Delones, Jessie Atchison, Josey Hampton, Kennedy Dean, Jordan Lafave, Payton Lewis. Coaches are: Head Coach Matt Carter, Coach Mike Crabb, and Coach Teddy Davis.

extra » al reuchel Let’s make the really fat people lose more weight because their fair share is bigger than the rest of us and they can afford it. It’s the skinny people that shouldn’t have to pay as much because they don’t eat as much. Apply that logic to the deal that prevents us from plunging over the fiscal cliff. Our resolution is to lose 30 pounds--- so to lose 30 pounds we are going to stuff ourselves and add another 20 pounds. Hurrah! We lost 30 pounds but we are still 20 pounds from where we want to be. The budget deal only trims one dollar in spending for every 41 dollars in tax increases. Instead of protecting the middle class—let’s call them the skinny people---- we decided to tax 70 percent of the so-called fat people because, as we all know, that’s the fair thing to do. Would someone please look up the meaning of “fair”? I’m not passing judgment on the Republicans or the Democrats. I’m just trying to understand Washington math and put it in terms the average Joe Schmo understands. When I’ve got 20 dollars in the bank that’s all I can spend. If I need more money I can go out and borrow some, but not to the point where there is no real expectation I can ever pay it back. Why doesn’t government run that way? The last time I checked if we took all the money that you and I made over the last year and pooled it together we still wouldn’t have enough to pay off our debt. That’s crazy. That’s insane! That has consequences! Am I screaming to a bunch of deaf leaders?
Losing Weight and Solving Our Fiscal Woes! S Written By: Al Ruechel
o here we are again. It’s the beginning of a new year, 2013, and we are all revved up about changing the stuff we don’t like with the things we think will make us happy. So what’s the most often made and broken resolution of the New Year? It’s losing weight! We all want to look and feel and be slimmer. Skinny is still in and fat is not where it’s at! Losing weight is considered cool, very responsible, and if you don’t hit your goal… well at least you tried.
80
january 2013 focusplantcity.com
Actually this one resolution is a study in human behavior. In order to be skinny you actually have to do something to make that happen. You must either cut calories or exercise and burn off all the calories your body can’t use. Its simple cause and effect.
The trouble is in our society we all want the effect to occur with the cause. Forget any pain or suffering or any learning along the way. We want it now! Of course logic tells us you don’t get something for nothing. We know it in our heads. We know it in our hearts. We just
can’t accept the truth so we fail over and over again. And, we are actually rewarded for our own stupidity! Which brings me to our economy. Passing laws with no teeth or no hope of success in Washington is akin to making a New Year’s resolution we know we can’t keep. “Let’s cut spending” should be the cry from DC as we stare down going over the 16.5 trillion dollar mark in our debt ceiling. Oddly enough lawmakers are doing just the opposite. To stop us from plunging over the fiscal cliff lawmakers agreed to a compromise--- let’s all lose 3o pounds.
So let’s be optimistic! Maybe if more people pay more taxes; maybe if the economy suddenly increases to a whopping 6 percent annual growth (currently at 1.8 percent); maybe investing millions in alternative energy and our schools and teachers and technology and manufacturing and loop holes for Hollywood film companies, stipends for rum producers in Jamaica, money for algae growers and train companies; maybe if all that works we can look back and say, Al, you were a fool for worrying. Then again maybe my resolution should be to eat as much ice cream and Krispy Kremes and chocolate shakes and sit on my bottom in front of the TV in order to lose those extra 30 pounds that are holding me down and threatening my health. Now tell me who is crazy!

extra » derek maul The reach of Public Law 94-142 and IDEA extends to a wide range of categories, including student IQ, physical challenges, and emotional/behavioral anomalies. The term exceptionality, according the U.S. Department of Education, is used to “identify patterns of strengths and needs common to groups of students.” My specialty was behavior. When I was young and tireless I worked in autism, helping establish cutting-edge interventions that literally re-wrote the protocols in northwest Florida. Later I spent a number of years helping children classified as SED (severely emotionally disturbed).
OBSERVATIONS: First, working with special needs students requires complete commitment, a deep love for children, constant higher-order thinking, limitless patience, unbelievable stamina, and the dogged belief that what you are doing is and will make a positive impact in students’ lives. The second observation is that I ran into a disturbingly high number of individuals (professional staff, paraprofessional staff and parents) who came nowhere close to meeting – or attempting to meet – the criteria listed above.

My third observation is the huge discrepancy between the emotional rhetoric behind ideas such as “No child should be left behind,” “We believe in education,” “We believe in our children,” “Every child should have equal access to a quality education…” and the willingness of people to actually pay for what they demand with such passion. Put those three observations together… - What it takes to work with challenged and challenging kids - Who is willing to work with these kids - What we’re willing to pay for their education …And what we’ve got is a pretty-much guaranteed struggle or fail scenario for much of exceptional student education. But there are – I believe – a number of viable solutions to what is a systemic malady. I plan to write about these in a future column.

Mildred took one last drag off of her cigarette before she looked at me and said, “Here Candy, take this dime over to Kirby’s Bakery and get yourself a treat, but stay outside until you’re finished”. (Mildred was a smart cookie and knew how to buy herself some time with my mother before I came back and started getting on everyone’s nerves.) Mission accomplished, I was happy and full of sugar and my mother’s outfit had been put together successfully. The next task of the morning was to get my mother’s hair done at “Wanda’s Beauty Shop.” Mrs. Wanda Glenn, or “Miss Wanda” as she was affectionately known, had a small shop on North Wilder Road which she actually owned and operated until about 10 years ago.

hould auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and auld lang syne? As a child I had no idea why when the clock would strike midnight on New Year’s Eve people would kiss each other and sing that strange song. Was it some kind of foreign language? I didn’t really know. What I did know was that New Year’s Eve meant that my sister and I got to stay up really late, watch television, and eat junk food. That in itself was reason enough for me to celebrate.
My parents were all for staying home with family on New Year’s Eve, but one particular year back in the early 1970s, my mother and father actually accepted an invitation to the Lakeland Yacht Club. To me that was a big deal. It meant that my parents were going to dress up in their finest, just like the movie stars on TV. On the morning of the party I accompanied my mother to see Mildred Jackson at Carol’s Fashions (which is now the home of Brown’s Florist) for the final
fitting of her outfit. Carol’s Fashions was an upscale dress shop which carried what the well-dressed woman would need. They had everything from hats to gloves, handbags to hosiery, evening gowns to pant suits, shoes to slippers, and even the most up to date in the unmentionables department. When mother and I walked in the door at Carol’s we were promptly greeted by Mrs. Yvonne Smith, who was a fixture there for many years. Yvonne had us walk to Mildred Jackson’s office, which was located at the back of the store. There sat Mildred behind her desk with that beautiful silver grey hair wrapped tightly in a bun on top of her head. Mildred was a world-class seamstress who probably hand sewed or altered at least 1,000 wedding dresses during her life here in Plant City. Mildred had a sharp eye for fashion. She could put together an outfit from head to toe and that is just what she did for my mother. Mildred even took care of her shoes and handbag. She would carefully remove a swatch of fabric from the hem of your outfit and send it taped inside the lid of your shoebox along with your handbag down the street to Jones Barber Shop where an African American man worked. He did some sort of process
I remember that shop like it was yesterday. When you walked in, there was a bench just like an old church pew for guests or waiting customers to sit on at your left. At the end of the bench there was a basket of magazines, books with the latest hairstyles, and discontinued pattern catalogs. I must have looked through that basket a million times. To your right was a line of hairdryers that looked like something from outer space. Those hairdryers were always buzzing and singing and every seat was taken. Those heads of hair were cooking and perking along, waiting for the final ding. When the bell went off “Miss Wanda” would walk over to her customer, raise the lid and check their hair. If they were done, then they were done. I mean, “meat-falloff-the-bone done.” When it was my mother’s turn to sit in “Miss Wanda’s” beauty chair, I would watch intently as her hair was combed, brushed, teased, and molded into her desired hair-do. My favorite part was when “Miss Wanda” would crank this machine up that looked like a hydraulic pump with a hose and sounded like a lawn mower. She would twirl my mother around and around in the beauty chair and spray her hair with hairspray that looked like shellac. “Miss Wanda” made darn sure that her hair-dos were not going anywhere. My mother’s hair always came out looking like a combination of Dear Abby, Ann Landers, and Norma Zimmer. When mother and I returned home she
had just enough time to dip in the tub and start the getting dressed process. When my mother and father were dressed and ready to go they paraded their outfits in the living room for us. Wow! There was my father in his dark suit and wingtip shoes, all polished and spit shined. Then there was my mother, standing there in her sea foam green shantung outfit. She was covered in that shade of green from head to toe. She had on dyed podesua pumps, sea foam green hose with silver flecks, a shantung silk coat dress, dyed evening bag, matinee-length gloves, matching earrings, shoes and purse clips. To me it looked like green chandeliers hanging from her ears, shoes, and purse. I remember that I thought that they looked so good they could have been on the Lawrence Welk Show. My parents returned home early from their party so that our family could be together to ring in the New Year. Now the fun started. Ginger Ale, leftover Christmas cookies, Ruffles potato chips, and French onion dip that was in the metal can. (Watch out, or you might cut your fingers pulling the tab off.) My father would turn on our Zenith television so we could watch the Guy Lombardo Orchestra with special guest Helen O’Connell broadcast live from the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. I remember my father swooping up my mother and dancing with her around the family room when Helen O’Connell sang her hit song “Tangerine”. Oh, how they laughed and carried on! They were so young and full of life. What a wonderful evening we all shared. I am all grown up now, and there is no more Guy Lombardo with Helen O’Connell New Year’s Eve programs broadcasting live from the Waldorf, Zenith TVs, or French Onion Dip in metal cans. I have watched many New Year’s Eve telecasts with my mother since my father passed away. But, I remember fondly. I have also finally figured out the meaning of the song: “Auld Lang Syne.” It is a Scottish folk song that tells of beautiful times gone by and the importance of new beginnings. I will leave you with an old Irish prayer. May love and laughter light your days, and warm your hearts and home. May good and faithful friends be yours, wherever you may roam. May peace and plenty bless your world with joy that long endures. May all life’s passing seasons bring the best to you and yours.

10 Years in The Making H submitted By: Brian West
as it really been 10 years since Toyota founded Scion? Wow! Seems like just yesterday, we started seeing those lifesized mice, zoom up and down city streets bobbing their heads like Will Ferrell’s and Chris Kattan’s SNL clubbing characters – Steve and Doug Butabi. Scion has come a long way in 10 years; founded to provide a market for Generation Y. Scion offers only a few different models, all of which have been pretty popular with their target market, but the FR-S is their first product that may cross over to the Generation X market.
today’s world where horse power is alive and well with sports cars, 200hp may seem inadequate. Now couple this with a 6-speed transmission, and the 200 ponies under this hood provide ample get up and go for this sporty ride. It also features ventilated disc brakes, front and rear. And although the MPG is rated 22 city and 30 highway, be aware. You won’t be filling up the take with regular unleaded. This care requires premium, which means it’s going to cost a little more at the pump than what you may be driving today.
The interior is beautiful and somewhat comfortable. Now, it’s not a Mercedes, but The FR-S uses a front-mounted, 4 cylinder given the price point (roughly $25k base boxer engine that delivers 200hp. Now, in price), you’re really getting some nice things

for your money. The interior is sporty and the trim accents are something you typically see in custom cars. But that’s part of the appeal for Generation Yers. Instead of modifying a low cost car and customizing it, they can buy a new lower cost car that has the same appeal and the same end result, and save some time and hassle in the process. On the exterior, the car has nice lines. I actually think this is what the Toyota Celica could have evolved to if it weren’t discontinued in 2001. The lines of the FR-S make the front hood appear longer than it actually is, and give it an attractive rear end, although it appears to be missing something over the rear wheels. I thought
it was interesting that they incorporated the rear backup lights and a center brake light, low on the body – just beneath the tag mount. I wonder if this was a way to get something in the line of sight for those traveling behind the FR-S that may be texting. Just wondering. The FR-S is fun to drive. The car is really responsive and just screams at the driver to push the pedal to the floor. And you really have to be careful and pay attention to the speedometer, or you may find yourself doing 70mph in a 45mph zone. Oooops. Anyway, the FR-S is a great car for the money. If you’re in the market, visit your local dealer and take one for a drive. You won’t be disappointed.

With that being true oftentimes the tables can be turned whereby it is our very children who offer us such inspiration. Such is the case in the life of artist and mother Loretta Schools who credits her son Tim Schools, an established artist and musician, with inspiring her to begin her first painting. While visiting her son Tim and her granddaughter in Chicago, Tim asked Loretta to begin her first sketch. At first she felt skeptical about what she started but with her son’s encouragement she continued. Since that time Loretta has continued to create art.

Liver Sundays I Written By: gail jones
was a picky eater as a kid. A skinny, finicky, melodramatic waif who hated peas, eggs, and almost all red meat. Of course that never included bacon or hotdogs, which I would have eaten daily if I was allowed. But in our family, we were all served the same, well-rounded meal every night and expected to clean our plates. The pièce de résistance of our dining week was the big, midafternoon meal on Sunday which always featured a large hunk of roasted meat, or, if my parents thought I was looking particularly frail, a giant slab of…liver.
Fast forward a decade and I was headed off to graduate school in Chicago with my mother along for the ride. I had enjoyed my culinary independence in college and quickly, tiring of a diet of hot dogs and vending machine Oreos, I developed a real interest in good cooking.

Mom joined me, still silent with disbelief. “Did you know it could taste like this?” I asked. “Is this what pate always tastes like? Can you make it at home?” But Mom couldn’t answer because her mouth was full too. I can’t remember what else we ate that night. I do remember feeling magical as we dined and sipped our wine in a restaurant that was actually advertised in Gourmet magazine. I fidgeted for years to come up with a recipe to recreate that evening in my mind…And this is pretty darn close.
As a special treat on our last night together, Mom splurged and took me to the nicest restaurant near my new college. I was served a glass of wine without being carded and offered a small platter featuring a crock of the famous house pate. If you read from other reviewers on Google Plus, Yelp, and Urban Spoon, you’ll find many other Chancy fans agree. One loves that “the waitress calls you ‘Honey,’ another “the fair prices for good food without the fancy,” and yet another admires Chancy’s as “a survivor - a family-established dining establishment still going strong despite competition from corporate chains.” Melinda Cothron encouraged us that day with some words and memories of the family. She said, “I think the Lord has blessed me in many ways. My early life hadn’t been easy, so I didn’t know what friendship was until I met the Chancys. I loved this family and I learned a lot about life, especially from Marshal. He was a hard man, but a good and well-loved man who was good with numbers.”
Pulled pork sandwich, golden french fries, ribs, jumbo fried shrimp, garden salad, and seafood combination with catfish, scallops, shrimp, and hush puppies were perfectly cooked to order.

Country Night and More You Have To Visit Sometime Soon J
anuary 5th proved to be an exciting night at Keel and Curley. The winery decided to change it up a bit and have their very first Country Night. Many enjoyed the great entertainment provided by the Trinity River Bluegrass Band. This band is made up of a very talented family who enjoys spending their working time together as a team. The dad, Michael Harris, is the driving force behind the band. “He has instilled the love of music in them. God has gifted them with their talents,” says their grandmother, Joyce Harris. Joyce helps them manage the band and keeps everything running smoothly. The band includes Michael’s wife, Lisa, their older daughter Sarah, son Joshua, and youngest daughter, Brianna. Brianna is only 10 and plays the fiddle and sings along with the family. This family has played together for six years and they are working on their fifth CD.

Able to Eat Again
Seth Poppell, a real patient of South Florida Baptist Hospital
Robotic surgery speeds recovery from months to weeks. Seth was diagnosed with a devastating swallowing disorder and the only treatment option was surgery. His physician immediately referred him to the Pete Beaty Surgery Center at South Florida Baptist Hospital.
General Surgery ■ C.R. Hall, MD ■ Stephen M. Butler, MD
“My surgeon told me that normal recovery could take up to six months, but with robotic surgery I’d be back to school in seven to 10 days. I was able to finish my semester on time.”
OB/GYN ■ Carlos Lamoutte, MD
Minimally invasive robotic surgery at South Florida Baptist Hospital provides patients with less scarring, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays and reduced pain. Our robotic surgeons are highly experienced in performing even the most delicate procedures for esophageal, colorectal, urologic and gynecological concerns.
Urology ■ Jamil Rehman, MD
