Letter From The Publisher

Most adults know that life works best when important lessons are learned early.

This issue also includes stories on the three award-winning PCHS cosmetology students, the four area high school valedictorians, and the 19 four-year-old graduates of Bright Beginnings preschool, whose talents for recitation impacted more than 200 adults on the night of June 3. Obviously, they have all learned “the value of education” lesson and will reflect our community beautifully as they continue on the right path. For some adult inspiration, be sure also to check out the annual Focus on You Makeover winners. Each year we become more and more convinced of the reasons we continue this tradition. We feel privileged to showcase such lovely women and proud to assist in their day of pampering. Lessons learned early usually endure for a lifetime. We hope you and your family will experience a fun-filled, educational summer. Please don’t forget to share some of those highlights with us -- because your stories can become our classroom. A village grows better together. Enjoy!

Local Legend Passes

On Sunday, May 19, Lester Wishnatzki (pictured left) passed away from age-related causes. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Lester moved to Florida in 1929, and later became coowner of Plant City’s Wishnatzki & Nathel (now Wish Farms), along with his brother, Joe (pictured right). The farm was one of the first in the industry to use mechanical refrigeration in packing houses and trucks, and helped put Plant City on the map as the “Winter Strawberry Capital of the World.” Over the years, Lester had received several outstanding community honors for his generosity including an induction to the Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame in 2004 and 2007 Philanthropist of the Year, along with his late wife, Selma, by Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Our condolences to the Wishnatzki family during this time.

New Venture on Tap

in Plant City

Keel prepares to launch Two

Henry’s Brewing Company

T

oday, Joe Keel may be best known for the Keel and Curley Winery located at the corner of Branch Forbes and Thonotosassa Roads. But it wasn’t too long ago that Keel was a nurseryman—growing all types of plants and supplying them to projects all over Central Florida. In about 1995, Keel began pondering the idea of blueberry farming. Over the next couple of years, he planted blueberries and began harvesting the spring crop. Keel soon realized that the culls added up quickly, so the natural question was “What can we do with the culls?” The answer: wine making! Keel started making five-gallon batches of wine in his kitchen and by 2003 began a successful venture with Keel and Curley Winery into an industry best known in California, not Florida. Now Keel is preparing for yet another new venture; beer!

Article by Brian West

The last few decades have introduced terms like nanobrewery, microbrewery and craft brewing. Microbreweries have taken off all over the world, allowing more creative offerings, thus, the birth of the beer snob. More recently, craft brewing has emerged as another popular choice for beer enthusiasts. The beer market continues to evolve, and now Keel wants a piece of the pie. They plan to be open and serving beer on October 19th; just four months from now. Keel’s youngest son, Clay, said, “My dad and I enjoy drinking beer. Dad took a trip to Europe in the fall. He went to Germany for Oktoberfest and loved it. We already have a lot of the infrastructure in place, so brewing beer just makes sense.” They will be able to use some of the same equipment they use for making wine, but they’ll also

be purchasing some new equipment more specific to the brewing process. They’ve also been consulting with the first female Brewmaster in the United States and retired Tampa-based Strohs’ employee, Debbie Barker, to perfect beer recipes once again with five-gallon batches. Considering how well they’ve done with the winery, one can only imagine that a brewery should do just as well, and maybe even better. The name of the new venture will be Two Henry’s Brewing Company. The name was derived from Henry Flagler and Henry B. Plant, both having strong ties to the overall development of our area and the railroads throughout Florida during the 1800s. Each developed and built hotels up and down the coasts of Florida as well, with the Tampa Bay Hotel being the closest located near downtown Tampa and now a University of Tampa building. Plant is also the namesake of Plant City and Plant High School of which Joe and Clay are alumni.

18

june 2013 focusplantcity.com

Fittingly, the logo for Two Henry’s Brewing Company features a train and the two railroad pioneers. Keel also said they will be offering memberships to a “Founder’s Club.” The memberships are $1,000 each. For that, members will have two choices: access to a single serving of beer every day for life or a growler once a week for life—or both for a discount. The size of the growler is still being determined, but will be either 32 oz. or a full gallon. Members will also have their name on the wall showing their pledge of support. There will only be 100 memberships available for each offering. The idea is to allow members the spoils of owning a part of a brewery without all the stress of starting your own brewery. It’s a more creative way for the brewery to become integrated into the community. If you’re interested, call Keel and Curley Winery. They’ll be happy to share all the details.

A True Superstar Kevin Garcia Earns Freddie Solomon Moral Courage Award E

ighteen-year-old Kevin Garcia has had more than his fifteen minutes of fame in the spotlight recently. But in typical Kevin-style, the humble and recent graduate of Strawberry Crest High School considers it all in a day’s work. On May 23, 2013, Garcia accepted the Freddie Solomon Moral Courage Award presented by DeBartolo at the Tampa Bay Sports Commission’s third annual Sneaker Soiree. The event celebrates the region’s most notable amateur and professional athletes. Because his story, energy and resilience so impacted Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon that evening, he invited Kevin to Tropicana Field the next day to present American League Cy Young Award winner David Price with the “Rays Moment of the Year” award.

Fans for both teams went wild and Spoto’s Coach Dominic Girod and his Spartans realized this special moment was “bigger than the game itself.” Many described the euphoric win and beautiful sight as “a Kevin night.” Thankfully, ABC Action News and YouTube have preserved Garcia’s victorious break dance and teammates’ high fives as a perfect wrap up to the game that everybody won. Fast-forward now to May 24 and the morning after Garcia slept with both his Moral Courage award and Price’s Moment of the Year award nearby. As Maddon’s guests at the first of a 3-game series between the Rays and the New York Yankees, the Garcia family enjoyed a complimentary limo ride and a skybox view of the action. ull out the poodle skirt, dust off the platform boots—we are taking “A Blast 2 the Past.” On Sunday, June 23, the Plant City Arts Council will host their annual scholarship fundraiser and the biggest change this year…the venue. The event had been held in previous years at Plant City’s own Red Rose Inn and Suites. Due to the facility closing its doors last May, the organization had to find another location to hold its night of music and fun. So where will the festivities be held this year? The locale of choice is Walden Lake Golf and Country Club.

Event and Concert Chair of the organization, Cheryl Worsham, is very excited about the new venue: “The room is going to be very comfortable. It’s a little bit more cozy.” Doors open at 6 p.m., when guests can also enjoy appetizers and a cash bar on the clubhouse terraces. A buffet dinner will start around 6:30 p.m. and after all plates have been cleared, Worsham says, the room “will then become a concert hall.” While attendees sip their after-dinner drinks and enjoy their delectable desserts, Artists at the Blast 2 the Past event include Jolanda Nel, Clint Shephard, Dennis they will be entertained by music going Hoag, and back by popular demand—Riverside. With smiling faces and twinkling eyes, they came dressed in their Sunday best, to impress—and did they ever! Approximately 250 delighted audience members enjoyed watching the children sing eight learning songs with animated motions to demonstrate their ABCs (forward and backward), knowledge of shapes and counting to 100. The children are also beginning readers, but what wowed appreciative family and

friends most was their talent for recitation. From memory, they recalled The Ten Commandments, the Bible’s 66 book names, and pledges to the Bible and flags, American and Christian.

PCHS Cosmetology

Students Advance to Skills USA National Championship Article by Cheryl Johnston

Bishop called it “unforgettable,” because, “Not only were we named state champs, but I was able to connect more with the girls I’m now blessed to call my best friends.” After the girls competed, Watkins prayed and remembers “feeling every emotion possible.” Just before the winners were announced on awards night, the three prayed together, “Lord, it’s in your hands. We competed to the best of our ability. This is in your plan. Whatever happens is meant to be.” And so, it is—a big win and a unified desire to share their passion for helping others. Watkins shared, “Being able to do what I love (cosmetology) and be with these special students is truly something I will cherish for a lifetime. My prayer now is that I can leave a fraction of the impact on their lives that they have left on mine.” Jana’s mother Caron related that the teacher who drove five students to the competition is “lovingly known as Mrs. R by her students.” “Mrs. R deserves the recognition,” she explained. “This state win comes right on the heels of a very successful Relay for Life event at PCHS where her Cosmetology group raised over $5,000.” Ritenbaugh couldn’t be more pleased for this national competition opportunity. “Our students also put on the annual “Everybody’s Beautiful” fashion show with our exceptional students as a benefit for the PCHS Best Buddies,” she explained.

For many years, the PCHS Cosmetology students have provided salon services on Wednesdays for children with special needs who might otherwise not have access to this luxury.

Instructor Laurel Ritenbaugh describes that outreach as the program’s “ongoing joy.” The cosmetology students also recently offered $10 haircuts at the PCHS Relay for Life effort, for which their teacher is a team captain.

“We have a long line of cosmetology champions at Plant City High School,” she added, “but I am especially proud of this team as their win is all about serving others. CAN MANY INCIDENTs CAUsE WHIPLAsH?

You may think that you have not been hurt in a fender bender, especially if your car was going very slow or standing still. However, studies show that passengers involved in an automobile accident are more severely hurt than the vehicles. This means that even a crash at five miles per hour can cause a whiplash. A whiplash is an injury that forces your head and neck to move quickly forward and then back again. Even though most whiplashes are caused by automobile accidents, you can also get them after a fall, a mild sports accident, jumping on a trampoline and even sneezing. Even when children are just playing around and pushing each other from behind, it is possible to get a whiplash. If you get a whiplash, call and make an appointment as soon as possible. The earlier that you are seen, the better chance

the problem will b resolved in a shorter time period. A Doctor of Chiropractic’s skills are especially appropriate to relieve the neck pain and other harmful effects of whiplash and to promote a swift recovery by diminishing the symptoms, increasing range of motion, overcoming muscle weakness and improving muscle tone. Since a Doctor of Chiropractic can do so much to enhance your body’s repair, in no time, you will be feeling like your old self again! Why would you want to delay your visit? Paul Sidney Buchman Plant City’s Long-Time City Attorney And Devoted Family Man (1923 – 1991) - Part 1 of 2 Article by Plant City Photo Archives & History Center

T

o say that Paul Sidney Buchman was a skilled attorney doesn’t suffice. Rather, it seems more appropriate to say that he proudly wore his love of municipal law as a badge from the moment he graduated from law school to his 42-year appointment as Plant City’s city attorney. Those 42 years represented the longest tenure of any city attorney in the state of Florida, earning Buchman a national renown for his expertise in the area of municipal law. Indeed, he was often sought out by fellow city attorneys nationwide for advice and guidance. The only thing that Buchman loved more than municipal law was his family. Buchman’s son Kenneth had this to say about his father: “Family was very important to him. The happiest times in his life were family occasions.”

in Tampa. He joined 6-year-old Pearl and 5-year-old Manuel. Younger sister Edythe arrived 2 years later. Kenneth said that throughout Buchman’s life he would be very close to each of his siblings. In 1930 when Buchman was 6 years old, his family moved to Plant City, Florida, where he proceeded to attend public schools. Census records for 1935 show the family living at 607 West Haines Street As a boy, Buchman delivered newspapers for the Tampa Times and during his high school years he was on the staff of the Capitol Theatre. While in high school, Buchman represented Plant City in the American Legion Oratorical contests and was a runner-up in the 1940 state competition. These contests still take place and “present participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights, and privileges of American citizenship.

focus on you

makeover In early 2003, we, the FOCUS Magazine staff, wanted to find a way to give back to the community. As a result, the annual Focus on You Makeover was born, allowing our readers to nominate fellow friends, family members, and co-workers for a day of much-deserved pampering. Every spring we gather to read countless letters—some inspiring, others downright heart wrenching—with each leaving a lasting impact on our lives. Through these letters, we learn about a number of selfless area residents who truly deserve a whole day devoted solely to themselves. As always, selecting this year’s winners was a difficult process as all nominees put the lives of others above their own each and every day. Although we wish we could provide services for each nominee, after much deliberation, four lovely ladies were chosen for a Focus on You Makeover. A two-day event, our Focus on You Makeover winners first gathered at Dillard’s in Brandon’s Westfield Mall on Thursday, May 23 for a $200 shopping spree. With the help of Dillard’s store staff members and manager Jill Nicholson, each winner selected a beautiful new outfit to be worn at a photo shoot the following evening. However, the real fun began bright and early—7 a.m.—on Friday, May 24 at Fred’s Southern Kitchen. Everyone had full reign of the delicious breakfast buffet as plates were filled with bacon, scrambled eggs, grits, fresh fruit, smoked sausage, and more. Then, it was off to The Artistry and Textures Hair Salon—via donated Jarrett-Scott Ford SUV—where each winner received a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, haircut and color, and makeup application. In between all the different activities, each winner received a to-go lunch, compliments of Chili’s. After the pampering was complete, the women went home to dress in their new outfits and meet their dinner date. Finally, a limo—provided by Kings Limousine—arrived at each home to pick up the winners and escort them to Ryuu Japanese Steak House in Brandon, where they enjoyed both dinner and a show thanks to talented and entertaining hibachi chefs. Each winner also received a gorgeous bouquet of flowers provided by Creative Flowers by Glenn upon exiting the limousine, and, donned in their new outfits from Dillard’s, took part in an “after” photo shoot. In the pages that follow, meet each of the wonderful women we selected to be a part of the 2013 Focus on You Makeover. Read their stories, follow their experiences, and be inspired. And of course, this special day would not be possible without the participation of several area businesses. Special thanks to Dillard’s Brandon Westfield Mall, Jarrett-Scott Ford, Fred’s Southern Kitchen, The Artistry, Textures Hair Salon, Chili’s, Kings Limousine, Creative Flowers by Glenn, and Ryuu Japanese Steak House for providing their time and resources to allow these ladies to feel pampered from head-to-toe. foCUS Magazine Plant City MAY 2013

Twalla had the pleasure of being pampered by the staff at The Artistry, and it sure was a long time coming. In fact, Twalla rarely ever takes a second to tend to herself, as for the past few years, she has consistently put others first, taking care of both her mother-in-law and late father-in-law. She even quit her job in the medical field to tend to her aging in-laws every need, all the while managing her own personal battle with lupus on a daily basis, a chronic inflammatory disease where the body’s immune system attacks tissues and organs. But Twalla doesn’t consider caring for others a burden—she does it for the love of her family, which also includes her husband of 30 years; son, Joshua (30); daughter, Ericka (25); and three grandchildren, Makayla (6), Maci (3), and Mason (1). “For the past three years, my mom has taken care of everyone but herself,” explained Twalla’s daughter and nominator, Ericka, before enjoying a hibachi dinner with her mother at Ryuu Japanese Steak House. “She’s put her life on hold to take care of others.” In response, Twalla exclaimed, “I wouldn’t have it any other way!” Twalla was a true joy to be around the entire day during her makeover, always smiling and laughing, and immediately making everyone that crossed her path feel like a very good friend. And whether she was eating breakfast, enjoying a pedicure, or getting a haircut, Twalla made sure to express her gratitude to everyone involved with the process of her very own day full of new experiences. In fact, Twalla thought the mini hand, foot, and leg massage involved with the manicure and pedicure would be her favorite part of the day…but that was before she got a full, 1 hour Swedish massage thanks to the Artistry’s Licensed Massage Therapist Leah Clark. When asked about her entire experience, Twalla was at a loss for words: “It was awesome…just awesome. It was wonderful. I was smiling from ear to ear all day!” As mentioned above, the Focus on You Makeover was a new experience for Twalla, who had never before enjoyed a professional massage or a facial because of her constant concern for her family. However, she kept an open mind throughout the entire day, approaching every moment with excitement and anticipation. In the end, Twalla believes her makeover was definitely a life-changing time that really opened her eyes to the importance of occasionally treating yourself to good things. “What I’ll personally take away from this experience is that it’s ok to go out of my comfort zone,” said Twalla. “It’s ok to take some time for myself.”

Anyone that’s come across Sarah Sutton knows she was highly deserving of a Focus on You Makeover. Mother to five and grandmother to six, Sarah is always on the go, working hard to provide for her entire family after the loss of her husband of 35 years about eight years ago. And on the weekdays, Sarah also serves as “mother” to over 1,600 more children as head custodian at Tomlin Middle School. Her job—making sure each child is growing up in a safe, comfortable environment. “Those kids…they keep me hoppin’!” said Sarah. And when it’s time to put away the cleaning supplies at Tomlin Middle School, the work doesn’t stop as Sarah cares for two grandchildren while her daughter works the night shift. So just like Twalla, who rarely took a second to tend to herself, Sarah’s makeover at the Artistry was a new experience. “When I won, I couldn’t believe it because I never win anything,” said Sarah. “I was excited, but nervous at the same time because I never do anything like this.” Sarah—kind-hearted, soft-spoken, and sweet as can be—was very quiet throughout the beginning of her makeover day at The Artistry. Yet when she finally saw her beautiful new hair style, compliments of Jana Evers and Terrie Herndon of the Artistry, she truly started coming out of her shell: “I just love this hair!” she said about her new blonde highlights as the FOCUS team surrounded her after the makeover. “Sarah is a wonderful, sweet lady who I’ve known for 15 to 20 years,” said Evers. “Today was a great experience and I just love giving back...We were able to give her a look that was good on her and that she’ll be able to manage on a day to day basis.” Before entering Ryuu Japanese Steak House, Sarah’s daughter, nominator and dinner date, Katie Sutton, witnessed her mom’s newfound confidence during the grand finale photo shoot. Dressed in her beautiful new outfit highlighted by her new hairstyle, Sarah came to life in front of the camera. “We lost my dad when I was 11, so for the last eight years we had to help each other through,” said Katie. “My mom is my backbone. She pushed me through school and always makes sure I have everything I need. She deserves this.”

Last year, the FOCUS Magazine team selected Mrs. Leslie Rice—a Plant City High School English teacher—as a Focus on You Makeover winner. The reveal was a huge and exciting event, as we surprised her at a school assembly in front of hundreds of students. However, Leslie could not attend the makeover because she was in chemotherapy, battling breast cancer. Now a cancer survivor, Leslie was again nominated for a Focus on You Makeover this year by her fellow co-worker, Teresa Spangler, and we knew we couldn’t pass up the chance to give Leslie a day she truly deserves. Not only is Leslie’s story inspirational, but she’s touched the lives of a countless number of people in this community—and that was apparent throughout the entire day, starting right away at Fred’s Southern Kitchen. As all the winners gathered at a long table for breakfast, Leslie was constantly whisked away from our presence to speak with multiple friends who also happened to be dining at the same time. In fact, Leslie barely had time to sit down and enjoy her meal! And again at Brandon’s Ryuu Japanese Steak House, Leslie spent most of her time—almost an hour—conversing with a former PCHS student who worked at the Hibachi restaurant, listening to and offering advice to the now Hillsborough Community College student. “This happens everywhere we go,” said Leslie’s husband and dinner date, Dale, with a smile. “We can’t get away from it.” Even during her makeover at Textures Hair Salon—a time that was supposed to be dedicated to her own needs—Leslie did what she does best…she engaged in meaningful conversation with everyone who crossed her path. “Everyone I met today had their own touching stories, and it’s really humbling that these people were treating me like I’m extraordinary or special.” said Leslie. “I don’t know if I could handle what some of them have gone through. I felt like I wanted to give back to them instead.” Inspired by those around her, Leslie developed a new lesson plan for her students in 2014: “Next year, I’m going to have my students write letters to FOCUS as an assignment, so they can be a part of the giving.”

Choosing four winners for a Focus on You Makeover is usually an extremely difficult task, but when we read Yvette’s letter—written by her 12-year-old son, Chantz—we immediately knew she deserved a day of pampering. Chantz’s heartfelt letter brought tears to our eyes and a chill to our skin. This middle school student wanted more than anything for his mother to be treated like a queen. And she deserved it. “What made this year’s winners stand out was their generosity—their constant willingness to put others before themselves,” said Focus team member Jennifer Chamberlain. “But the letter written by Yvette’s son literally gave me goose bumps. She just lost her husband and we felt she deserved everything she can get.” For the past year, Yvette has endured one tragedy after another, almost losing her son in August 2012, losing her father in September 2012, and shockingly losing her husband in April of this year. Yet even though Yvette has gone through an immense amount of hardship, she’s continued to remain tough, put her faith solely in God’s hands, and stay true to herself—always giving of her time to others. “She’s a giving person who will do anything for anyone—no questions asked,” said her sister and dinner date. What inspired us about Yvette during her Focus on You makeover was her ability to make us laugh so easily. Her fun, outgoing personality made everyone feel at ease throughout the day. But it seemed everyone had the most fun with Yvette during the limousine ride when she was the life of the party— comically sliding around the car as the driver sharply turned corners and pressed the brake. As much as Yvette made us laugh, she also brought tears to our eyes at times when she shared the details of her heart wrenching story, and especially when she reflected on her entire Focus on You Makeover experience: “Today was absolutely wonderful,” said Yvette as she wiped away a tear. “It was kind of like a mending process for me.”

2013 High

Valedict Plant City | Durant

High schools across the nation can bestow no greater honor to a graduate than the title of valedictorian. And to Durant’s Jacob Bernier, Strawberry Crest’s Rahul Patel (IB) and Exor Serrano (Traditional), and Plant City’s Sarah Winter, earning the esteemed designation of valedictorian only indicated that their hard work throughout their high school careers paid off entirely. These four students have big dreams, and in order to achieve their career goals they went above and beyond for their futures, taking a number of challenging c o u r s e s , participating

in various extracurricular activities, and volunteering in their community. What may be most impressive regarding these exceptional students was their ability to maintain an outstanding grade point average while balancing school, activities, volunteer work, and a social life (Bernier, 6.86 GPA; Patel, 7.66 GPA; Serrano, 6.39 GPA; Winter, 7.77 GPA). How did they do it? FOCUS Magazine was able to interview each valedictorian to discover their secrets and learn a little more about their future ambitions. FOCUS: First of all, congratulations to each of you on achieving the title of valedictorian. Tell us about your supportive family and the role they have played during your high school career? Bernier: My parents have been generally hands-off after I hit high school because they think that they can’t ask me to do something they never did. They let me set my own goals and were understanding when I woke up grumpy or tired. They made sure I was able to go on field trips and make it to study groups. They reminded me of deadlines that I was sure to forget—like this interview. Patel: My family means everything to me. I would definitely not be where I am today if I did not have them around. My mother and father have had a tremendous impact on my life, as they continually push me to be the best person I can be. I owe them everything because ultimately they are the reason for my success. They have inspired me and given me much strength and supported my goals right from day one to the very end of my high school life. Serrano: My dad, Exor Serrano and my mother, Carmen Serrano, always made education a priority in my house. I wasn’t allowed to do anything if my grades were low, and in my parents eyes that is a “B.” They’ve always stressed how vital education is and told me that I should always try and be the best I could be, in everything I do, including school. Winter: I live with my parents, Gary and Julie Winter, and my older brother James Winter. Over the years of high school they were always the ones encouraging me to try my hardest, and would be the ones to support me with anything I put my mind too.

FOCUS: What did it take for you to accomplish the prestigious position of valedictorian? Bernier: I took a lot of classes. I mainly took classes that I found interesting, so I guess it is my interest in learning that really took me there. Maybe I didn’t have to take AP Bio as a physics major, but I want to be informed on as many subjects as I possibly can be. Patel: It took a lot of hard work, taking AP, IB, Honors, and Dual Enrollment classes, and most importantly, balance. I had to manage my time between volunteer work, club soccer, high school soccer, family commitments, friendships, dual enrollment classes at HCC, and not to mention being in the IB Program at school. I believe my faith and the support of my family, friends, and teachers coupled with my intelligence, dedication, and love of learning, ultimately led to me becoming valedictorian. The simple belief that no matter what you set out to do in life, do it to the very best of your abilities no doubt helped me achieve this position. Serrano: Stress, tears and Google. Winter: After hearing that I was ranked first at the end of my freshman year, I had a goal in mind that I wanted to stay in that spot. Thus over the years, I have taken a total of 13 AP classes, 9 dual enrollment classes, and many online courses in-between. This brought my GPA to a 7.77 weighted, and a 3.98 unweighted. FOCUS: What are your plans for college? Bernier: I will attend the Florida State University as a physics major. Patel: I plan on attending the University of Florida Honors College, and I will be doing a double major in Finance and International Relations. Serrano: I’m attending USF in the spring and plan on majoring in Medicine. Winter: In the fall I will be attending the University of Florida where I will be double majoring in Economics and Finance. FOCUS: What are your career goals and plans for the future? Bernier: I don’t know what to do with physics outside of teaching and although that interests me, I will be talking

h School

torians | S t r aw b e r ry C r e s t with a lot of guidance counselors for a second opinion. Patel: I aspire to go to Law School and plan on completing my graduate studies by receiving an MBA and a JD. Ultimately I want to become a corporate lawyer, hoping to represent companies working internationally. Serrano: I’m taking everything I do one step at a time. But as of today I’d like to be a pediatrician. Winter: In the future I hope to graduate with my Masters from UF, and then go on to become a production analysis for a major corporation where I will make investment plans for the business. FOCUS: Describe your favorite teachers or other influential people in your life who have helped you get to where you are today—2013 valedictorian? Who has inspired you to succeed? Bernier: My favorite teachers are Mr. Ryan Haczynski(Mr. H) and Mr. Lynch. Mr. H is a social studies teacher and he was my first AP teacher. He is incredibly eloquent and knowledgeable in many areas, not just social studies. Mr. Lynch is a chemistry teacher and he knows what he’s doing, while also being funny and cool. Patel: I have been blessed with so many people who have inspired me in my life so this is a difficult question to answer, but I have four people who I specifically want to point out. My dad has taught me almost everything I know, from playing soccer to teaching me about international politics; he has had the largest impact on my life…Words cannot express how grateful I am to him for helping to raise me for the past 18 years. I truly owe all my success in the past, present and future to him. My grandfather is a constant reminder to me about what the true meaning of hard work is. My grandfather left India at about 13 years of age alone to make himself into something…He is a reminder to me that the path to success comes through hard work and prayer. Not only has he inspired my tremendous work ethic, but he has also inspired my deep religious spirituality and faith in God. My Biology teacher Mr. Ward has taught me the meaning of happiness…He always manages to help us students and to inspire us to do great things by enabling us to look at the positives in our lives and to not focus so much on the negatives. My history teacher Mrs. Cubano

has taught me the meaning of toughness and she has also helped influence my career path…She recently predicted that I would one day work as an intermediary between government and business and that it would be my destiny to save capitalism. Serrano: Who has inspired me to succeed? Mr. Young, my English teacher. He taught me that even though education is an important part of life, one must also learn to be humble. You can be the smartest, richest and most talented person in the world. But if you aren’t happy, then none of that matters. My sister, Karen Serrano, has always helped me with anything I needed, whether it was reviewing for a test, or dealing with the typical high school problems, she has been my best friend through it all. Winter: First would be Mr. Padgett, whom I had for a teacher three of the four years of high school. He has prepared me in numerous ways with his rigorous grading that caused me to always stay on top of my work, as well as being an overall charismatic teacher who kept the idea of advanced history courses exciting. Along with this, Mr. Schism, the AP Literature teacher, has been a great influence, for not only dramatically helping me to improve my English scores, but also through his daily life lessons that not only change the way I think, but the way I live.

at Armwood High School, with my former teacher, Mrs. Richardson, who is currently teaching at Hillsborough High School IB. Knowing how and why people act in a certain behavior was actually interesting in comparison to letters that are combined with numbers. Winter: My favorite class that I have taken is AP Calculus. Firstly, because math has always been my favorite subject and this course provided a challenging, yet interesting subject to study. Along with this, I had a great teacher, Mr. Belcher, who not only did an excellent

Sarah Winter Plant City

FOCUS: What was your favorite class and why? Bernier: My favorite class was Calculus, hands down. Math is such a fun subject but they stop teaching you new things after geometry year. So much of the course work is repetitive that getting to a completely different field like calculus was very refreshing and fun. Patel: My favorite class is IB Higher Level History because we learn about not only our own nation’s history, but the history of other nations too. History also coincides with politics, which is another subject that I love discussing. I think another reason I love history is because it involves the whole world and I have always loved studying other parts of the world, which is partially the reason for why I love to travel so much, as well. In brief, history helps us to understand why the world is the way it is today in its present state. Serrano: I enjoyed AP Psychology my sophomore year foCUS Magazine Plant City MAY 2013

job teaching, but he made calculus interesting each and every day! FOCUS: What are some extracurricular activities or sports that you’ve been involved in during high school? Bernier: I was in Mu Alpha Theta, a math competition club; National Science Bowl, a science trivia club; and Science Olympiad, a sort of demonstrative science club. Patel: Throughout my whole life, including the past four years of high school, I have played soccer. Soccer is my passion and it is the thing I love to do the most. I have served as Captain of Strawberry Crest’s Men’s Soccer Team and when I am not playing for the school team, I am playing for my club soccer team: VSI West Florida Flames. This year in high school the team finished as District Runners-up and Regional Quarterfinalists. In club soccer, my team qualified for the Disney National Showcase Tournament and we finished in the Round of 16 at State Cup while also finishing Runners-up at Florida Cup. Other than soccer, I love to volunteer. I have served as a volunteer at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in the Nephrology Department. Additionally, I have volunteered at two different hospitals in India. I have been a youth coach at my soccer club VSI, where I have the opportunity to coach teams of six and seven year olds every spring. I am also working in conjunction with the locally-based Soccer for Souls Foundation which aims to give low income children soccer cleats. Finally, I participate in a wide variety of clubs at school, I helped co-find the Indian Student Alliance and the Soccer Club, I hold officer positions in the Fashion Club, Asian Student Alliance, and Soccer Club; and I am also a member of NHS, Math Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Red Cross Club, and Model United Nations Club. Serrano: I’m in Beta Club, I was president of Interact my Junior year and I did cross country and track my freshmen year, where I broke the freshmen record 5k at Armwood with 17 minutes and 28 seconds. But I’m limited into doing extra activities due to working at HOST, an afterschool daycare provided by Hillsborough County for elementary schools. Winter: I served as the President of Student Council, Vice President of Raider Buddies, Vice President of Interact Service Club, Council Leader of Youth Alive, and Chaplin of the National Honor Society. I am an active member at the First United Methodist Church, where I am a Student Leader. I also participate in the PCHS Thespian Troupe, Special Olympics, Senior Class Council, Science Club, and the Math Team. FOCUS: How do you spend your free time? Bernier: I play a lot of video games. Patel: I spend my free time hanging out with friends and spending time with family. I value all the free time I have because usually it’s scarce, but I always make the time to be with my family and to enjoy the company of my friends. These two groups of people have played a pivotal role in me being where I am today, and me being the young man that I am today. I like to watch soccer as well. Serrano: I love to eat food, especially pizza. Hanging out with my friends, going running and watching movies. Winter: In my free time I like to hang out with my

60

friends, whether we are playing ultimate frisbee, going swimming or seeing local theatre performances. I also enjoy watching TV and movies. I am a big fan of the shows Doctor Who and Sherlock and I try to watch a movie I have never seen before each week. FOCUS: What is one thing you’ll always remember from your high school experience? Bernier: Making friends can be—was—hard and it’s important to value the friends you have. Patel: I will always remember my senior night game for soccer. Although we lost and it ruined our undefeated season, it was an incredible game, as most of the IB Program along with family and family friends came out to watch us play. It was breathtaking to see how many people had come to watch us play, and it meant the world to me and my fellow seniors that all our friends were there to support us. Serrano: Friendships I’ve made with some of the coolest people in the world. Winter: I will always remember the bonding time that the other students and I had at the end of exams each year. For example, this year, in Calculus, as a class we spent around five hours playing the game Apples to Apples, while in European History we had a food day where the teacher brought in a cake he got made just for the class! FOCUS: What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? Bernier: I don’t have any secrets I’d like to reveal. Patel: One thing most people don’t know about me is that I have had three near-death experiences in my life already. All of these experiences occurred when I was extremely young, but nevertheless the stories I have heard of these events have taught me to enjoy every second that I am alive and to make the most of it. By way of these experiences I have learned to wake up and thank God every morning for another day of living. Life is a privilege, not a right. In my travels and experiences I have seen so many people who live much more difficult lives than I do. Thus, every time I complain about something I try to remember that comparatively, on a global scale, I live a life of luxury compared to the majority of the world, and for that I am extremely grateful to God, for he has gifted me with so much in life. Serrano: My sophomore year I was diagnosed with Lupus, an autoimmune disease, which pushed me into focusing mainly on school because it limited me playing sports. Having lupus meant I couldn’t be in the sun so I had to quit my cross country and track career. Even though people told me I’d never live a “normal life”, I decided to prove them wrong through academics and sports. I still go running when the sun goes down. Winter: One thing people don’t know about me is that I play the violin and enjoy writing poetry! FOCUS: What advice can you offer to those students who may be following in your footsteps next year? Bernier: Even if you’re looking to get a higher GPA, don’t look at classes as obligations; look at them as learning opportunities. You aren’t a valedictorian, you’re a person and expanding your

knowledge is far more important than a number. Patel: Work hard, but also make sure to keep balance in your life. You have many responsibilities and they are not all to school. I would encourage these students to do their best and to work as hard as possible, but at the end of the day it is equally as important to become a wellrounded individual. But above all, believe in yourself and your capabilities; believe it or not, confidence and self-belief are two qualities that will take you extremely far in life. Finally, know that we all have much potential; the keys to unlock that potential can be found within ourselves. Serrano: Don’t limit yourself and blame others for your failures. Only you can set your own expectations. Winter: Keep organized, don’t put off work that you can do today. If you want to be successful in high school you need to keep track of your schedule and try your hardest not to fall behind, because in the end you will be the one who is stress free!

Kaleidoscope Educational Services

plant city business profile

T

he kaleidoscope may not be as popular of a toy as it once was, but its mesmerizing properties still remain true. As we gaze into a kaleidoscope, twisting its end, we are introduced to everchanging symmetrical patterns created by the random configuration of colored objects reflected by a multitude of tiny mirrors. The kaleidoscope holds an important meaning to Mary Davis, so much so that she named her own tutoring company after the timeless toy. Since embarking on her journey as an educator, Davis has discovered that each student is composed of distinctive qualities that contribute to their own unique style of learning. In other words, no two students are identical— much like the beautiful reflections in a kaleidoscope. And for some children, Davis realized, understanding and applying new educational concepts is quite difficult.

Article by Amanda Deck

the heart of downtown Plant City on Reynolds Street. Although Davis and her team of tutors are able to serve all ages, the majority of Kaleidoscope’s clients are elementary and middle school students in need of Supplemental Educational Services (SES), a Florida Department of Education program that allows children from all income families who scored a Level I or II on the FCAT in reading, math or science tests the opportunity to receive at least 20 hours of free academic help in the subjects of reading, language arts, science, and math. We are not sure of the future of the SES program.

“As an educator, I see a lot of kids are behind, in the lower quartile, and I want to be able to provide some assistance to help them improve in their overall academics, especially the students that are faced with adversity or are underserved,” said Davis.

“What I’m most proud of about Kaleidoscope is that we serve students through SES in Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Pinellas, Polk, and Manatee Counties, and in all of those counties over the last five years, we have been rated excellent by the Florida Department of Education and the school districts, as well as with parents,” said Davis, further adding, “And about 90 percent of our students showed gains not only in their post assessment, but also in the academics in school. Now that’s something to brag about.”

As a result, in 2003, Davis established Kaleidoscope Kids Learning Center—now Kaleidoscope Educational Services. Today, Davis’ center provides tutoring sessions for children and adults throughout the Tampa Bay area, with its main office located in

What makes Kaleidoscope Educational Services stand out is its ability to provide one-on-one tutoring sessions in an array of locations as tutors are available to instruct in office, at home, at school, or in the community. This direct instruction is

quite beneficial for children who are below grade level because some of the students may feel intimidated by their peers and the students are able to connect and bond with the instructor. The one-on-one sessions also allow the tutor to better understand a child’s unique learning style. “The ultimate goal is to provide services to students for at least an entire year. We don’t want to have a kid start with us, let’s say in 1st grade, and the kid stays with us through 6th grade,” said Davis. “That’s not the plan. The plan is to be able to teach them strategies they’ll be able to transfer and utilize in different academic settings…

how to critique items and look at them strategically.” Although the school year is officially over, Kaleidoscope Educational Services is still able to provide learning opportunities for children. In fact, the center will be assisting at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreational Center during the summer hosted by the Plant City Parks and Recreation Department. For three days a week, experienced educators and certified tutors will guide children through activities in math, reading, and writing. One-on-one and small group instruction will be available for children who need the extra academic attention. Kaleidoscope’s nonprofit, Tutelage Inc., recently held a fundraiser to benefit this program; several guests included parents, tutors, children, the Tutelage Fundraising Committee and local business owners. To register your child for Kaleidoscope’s tutoring services, call 813-704-6908 or stop by the office at 110 W. Reynolds St., Suite 110 to pick up an application. Spring Surprise:

Stronger Job Growth Submitted by Kate Warne, Ph.D., CFA, Investment Strategist

T

he economy received a nice spring surprise in the form of higher job growth. Job growth picked up in April as the U.S. economy added 165,000 jobs, which was well above the 140,000 expected, according to Bloomberg. The unemployment rate edged down 7.5% from 7.6% in March. Combined with upward revisions for both February and March, the economy added 783,000 jobs in the first four months of the year, slightly above last year’s pace. Stocks rose sharply in response, again reaching new record highs, relieved that the slowdown in March job growth didn’t linger into April.

Need reassuraNce? I offer It.

Has your confidence in Wall Street been shaken? Volatile markets can test your conviction and purpose. But it’s important to have a thoughtful plan—and stick with it.

Summer Economic Slowdown Ahead?

Let me help you create a sensible, comprehensive investment plan and guide you to remain on track to reach your goals.

Recent economic indicators have suggested the economy may be slowing down again, after expanding at an annual rate of 2.5% in the first quarter. The federal government’s spending cuts (sequestration) are a drag on overall growth, and manufacturing output appears to be decelerating. But don’t let any signs of slower growth over the next few months distress you. Keep in mind the following: • Stronger contributions from housing and autos partially offset the effects of sequestration and slowing manufacturing output. • Consumers have kept spending steadily and seem to be feeling more confident now, suggesting any slowdown could be brief.

The quarter-to-quarter growth rate of the economy is likely to remain bumpy, and that means any slowdown isn’t likely to last. Just like over the past few years, we expect the overall pace of economic growth in 2013 to remain about 2%.

Preparation and Persistence

Stocks are at record highs, buoyed by ongoing modest economic growth and rising earnings. Across the country, household wealth has also reached new highs, boosting confidence and supporting further growth. Many people’s finances have healed, but their psyches are still bruised. That’s not surprising, especially when so many remain unemployed. Although there are many concerns, worrying and waiting aren’t the best way to avoid them—preparation and persistence are much more effective.

Stay Invested

Historically, stocks have continued to rise after reaching record highs, for an average gain of 40% over the following 21 months.* So don’t wait on the sidelines. Instead, take the proper steps to prepare and persist: • Make sure you have the appropriate mix of quality stocks and bonds in your portfolio. • Diversify your stock and bond holdings so that no individual investment is too large. However, remember that stocks don’t rise smoothly over time. You’ll need persistence to stay invested and add stocks during the inevitable and normal stock market declines that always occur unexpectedly. With preparation and persistence, you can be ready for spring surprises—like April’s stronger job growth—as well as any signs of a summer slowdown, and you’re poised to stay on track toward your long-term financial goals. *Source: Ned Davis Research. Market Today Column by Jo-An Lusk

verywhere you look you see the news, “Markets are seeing improvement as prices are rising”, or something to that affect. Whether it’s the newspaper, television or online chatter, the market is improving. However, what happens 30+ miles away may not be the same as what is happening here in Plant City. It is certainly great to hear this news no matter where you live, because it gives all of us some hope and trust in the improving economy. I want to share some information regarding inventory, as it’s one of the indicators used in the business to plan and forecast. One piece of data is the Absorption Rate. This is the speed (rate) at which listings, matching particular criteria, are sold (absorbed into the market). For instance, the Absorption Rate for a Single Family Home in Plant City, built in the last 20 years, 1600-2000 square feet (heated), in the price range of $100,000-$200,000, with 3-4 bedrooms and 2 baths – is approximately 6.3 sales per

month. This data is taken from the Multiple Listing Service and will not include homes that are not sold with a real estate agent. Another important piece of data in real estate is Months of Inventory. Using the Absorption Rate and same criteria above, we can calculate how many months of inventory there is on the market for listings meeting that criteria. Currently there is 2.2 months of inventory, meaning it will take 2.2 months to sell existing inventory. This is a dramatic change in recent years, when at one point we had more than 15 months of inventory. More inventory is good for buyers; less inventory is good for sellers. Supply and Demand will always drive real estate economics. If you have any questions regarding the data or real estate in general, please feel free to contact me at 813-754-3586 or email me at jo-an.lusk@floridamoves.com.

Nate Davis President NMLS #294701

I just had a former client leave my office who was ecstatic about the refinancing option we approved her for. Her very words were, “More people should know about this. This is amazing!” Let me explain... I helped her family purchase a home in 2011 with an FHA loan since they, like many homebuyers, could only afford a 3.5% down payment. The mortgage insurance on an FHA loan with a 3.5% down payment is typically more expensive than the mortgage insurance on its conventional loan counterpart, which requires at least 5% in equity. So why was she overjoyed this morning? This is where the magic happens... She now has equity in her home (she has 20% equity, but even with less equity this still makes sense), and we were able not only to reduce her interest rate, but completely eliminate the mortgage insurance portion of her current payment. So her savings were realized in two fashions: 1) Lower Interest Rate, and 2) Removal of Mortgage Insurance. Both keep a lot more money in her checking account each month! I told you that story so I could tell you this: If you have an FHA loan and bought when the market values were lower (2008-2012), I feel it will be in your best interest (literally) to give me a call to review what money savings may be available. As you know, we are not the “salesy” type. So as always, no obligations, just honest straight-forward answers and explanations. Our interest rates and costs do the selling for us.

Keven Long W

ith three different head coaches over the past four years, Plant City’s Keven Long has had to deal with the challenges created by the turnover in coaching. Willing to help his team in whatever role he was given, Long, who is talented enough to play a variety of positions, found his strength on the hill as the 6’2” right-hander helped lead the Raiders baseball team to a second place finish at the district tournament and to a regional semifinal game. Prior to Long’s senior season, the three-year letterman had only logged twelve innings on the mound and did not throw a single pitch last season. He made up for that deficit, however, by throwing more than 60 innings this year and was credited as the winning pitcher in seven of the Raiders’ thirteen victories. He also led the district with a 0.79 ERA and topped all other district pitchers with 73 strikeouts. Despite those impressive stats as a hurler, Long received his second consecutive AllConference selection as an infielder rather than a pitcher. Offensively, he followed up last season’s .422 batting average (4th in district) with a .387 average (3rd) this year to complement his success on the mound. Long, the son of Joel and Samantha Long and the eldest of their five sons, started playing baseball at the age of four in tee-ball through the Plant City Recreation Department. He continued playing Little League but added travel ball at age 10, joining the Rawlings Renegades from Lakeland. At 12, he became a part of the Bullets Baseball organization in Dover and a year later became a member of the Florida Baseball Heaven Angels, whom he still plays with today. For the Long family, all of the late night ball games, the travel to tournaments, and the concession stand food were worth the effort as Keven recently was awarded a scholarship to play baseball for Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Keven, who compiled a 3.2 GPA at Plant City High School, has set his goal to become a physical therapist. “It will be hard on us seeing him leave,” said his mother Samantha, “but it will be good for him. We’re very proud of him.” Under first-year head coach Mike Fryrear, Long helped lead the Raiders to a third place regular season finish in District 7A-8. At the district tournament, however, the Raiders surprised second-seeded Hillsborough, who came roaring into the district tournament with 17 wins, and victories in 8 of their last 9 games. Long silenced the Terriers’ bats as he pitched the finest game of his career, a 1-0 two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts that enabled Plant City to advance to the district title game against Brandon. Even though the Raiders lost the championship game, fortunately by rule, district champions and runner-ups move on to regional competition. Long, once again, pitched a gem in the regional semifinal, staking the Raiders to a 2-1 lead after six innings. When Long left the mound for a relief pitcher, George Jenkins High School rallied for the win in the bottom of the seventh, sending the Raiders home and ending Long’s successful varsity career. “It was the best year and the funnest year I’ve had in school,” remarked Long. “I want to thank Coach Fryrear, Coach Mark (Persails, Angels coach), my parents, and especially God for helping me through this year.”

Durant High School Cougars Baseball Team

Sports Team of the Month

B

efore the season started, Durant’s head baseball coach Butch Valdes felt comfortable with his team even though he had lost 11 seniors to graduation. He knew he had some underclassmen that had stepped up the year before and had been tested. He also knew that his ace on the mound, Tyler Danish, was fine, but there was something missing…so they went camping.

Article by Joe Bowles

A perceived threat to the Cougars was encountered in the regional final against Orlando Timber Creek, regional champion two of the past three years. With starting pitcher Chaz Fowler throwing four strong innings and the score deadlocked at one run apiece, the Cougars finally took charge as Luke Heyer drove in the Cougars’ go-ahead score in the fifth. He was followed by a Danish homer and then Danish closed out the game on the mound, securing a 6-1 win. “We knew that we had to play as a team, so With that victory, the Cougars were headed we went on a camping trip right before the to Jet Blue Park in Ft. Myers, along with season started,” recalled Valdes. “We were bonding. We wanted to get across to the boys the importance of ‘team’… everyone had to pull their own weight and we wanted the boys to be close. We even took a bus to the games so we could all be together rather than rent vans. We had to develop a team concept.”

three other schools, to battle it out for the FHSAA title. Along the way, the Cougars set school records for wins with 25 and picked up their first region title and their first final four appearance.

as the Cougars scored four more times for a 6-0 victory. Paxton Sims went 3-4 with two RBIs and Chaz Fowler went 2-4.

“It was hard to believe,” said Valdes. “But in reality we stayed pretty solid all season. I thought that when we went into Jet Blue Stadium that they might be a little overwhelmed, but they kept their composure.”

In the title game, hard-hitting Lake Brantley came out swinging and built an early 6-0 lead. The final score was 8-3. The Cougars fell for the first time in their past 13 games as the team brought home the runner-up trophy completing their magical run, going farther than any team in school history.

In the semifinal, the Cougars were paired against Hialeah American. Danish took care of business, pitching a shutout, collecting nine strikeouts, limiting his opponents to a single walk, and hitting a towering home run in the third inning that followed Jake Sullivan’s two-out single. Staked with a two-run lead, Danish finished out the game

“This was probably the closest knit family of kids I’ve ever been associated with,” reflected Valdes. “It was definitely a special season… of course, we wanted to win the title, but it’s hard to complain considering what we have accomplished. I can’t express how proud I am of this team… they just kept fighting.”

And so they did. Valdes’ team took a sixgame winning streak into the district tournament and then reeled off another six wins in a row, until succumbing to Altamonte Springs’ Lake Brantley High School in the state championship final by a score of 8-3. For the Cougars, there were few hiccups along the way. Led by senior Tyler Danish, who hit a team high .411 with a school record nine homers, the Cougars held opponents to two runs in the six postseason games leading up to the final and plated 27 runs of their own.

Column by Derek Maul a relationship between God’s intention for our lives and our response, our choosing God, our saying “yes” to God’s creative plans for us.

“Our great opportunity is to seize moments like that, to take Jesus at his word and to Every Memorial Day, step unhesitatingly into the challenge of the Florida arm of my doing God’s will. When we do, there is wife’s family gathers in Orlando for the no telling where he might lead us.” (GET REAL: pp. 26-27) traditional holiday cookout. The picnic typically features siblings Rebekah (Tampa), Joe (Orlando), and Jesse ( Jacksonville), along with various children and assorted other relatives and friends. But the BIG DEAL this year was the “twofer” high-school graduation; nieces Jordan and Lindsay, and the end of an era for “The Second Five.”

BELIEF:

Our family believes that our two beautiful high-school graduating nieces, resolute in their commitment to follow Jesus, are going to make a profound impact for good in this world, and that it is the context of faith that is going to make all the difference.

We understand very clearly that life does, and will, present huge challenges, and that there will be a steep learning curve over these next few years. Challenge is true for all of us, no matter what age we happen to be, and what context of life we are currently engaging; but the following is also— The Second Five have always been “the abundantly—true: little cousins”. But this year, those days are officially done. So the graduates were “For no matter how many promises God showered with gifts and love and festivity has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so and encouragement and—most of all— through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God. Now it is God who belief. makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. What I mean by “belief ” is the fact that He anointed us, set his seal of ownership Jordan and Lindsay are being launched on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a into “the world” from the context of a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” (2 family ethos that understands the nature Corinthians 1:10-22) NOTE: Rebekah and her sister Rachel had “The First Five” cousins in a frenzied sequence of baby production from 19811986. Later, after a long pause, her brothers Jesse and Joe got on board with “The Second Five,” 1994-2003.

What providence means, and how it Or, as translated in The Message, “Whatever applies to our pursuit of this “Life-Charged God has promised gets stamped with the Yes of Jesus. In him, this is what we preach Life.” and pray, the great Amen, God’s Yes and our Yes together, gloriously evident. God affirms us, making us a sure thing in Christ, “Providence” (as defined in GET REAL: putting his Yes within us. I

t’s summertime, and the living is easy. There will be warm, sandy beaches, days by the pool, and fun in the afternoon sun. Swimsuits, sprinklers, lemonade stands, baseball and hotdogs, so much time on your hands. Ice cream and squirt guns, games in the park, staying up late because it never gets dark. Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, times were so much simpler. There were no cell phones, no video games, no paintball shooting ranges, no iPods, and certainly no cars with DVD players in the back of the headrest. As a kid back in those days we looked forward to riding our bicycles, playing out in the yard, building secret forts, dressing up our Barbie dolls, flying kites, picnics with the family, getting up a game of kickball, hide-and-seek, softball, or swing by the statue with the neighborhood kids. We, as kids, were taught to use our imaginations, and boy did we during our summertime vacations.

part owner of Plant City’s very own Mid-State Potato Company, therefore he had connections. Mr. Rayburn, who all the kids affectionately called Papa, had a lazy eye, always a kind word for others and was one of the sweetest people I ever met. Karen and I asked Kimberle and David if they wanted us to push them around the block in the shopping buggy and they were all for it. Mrs. Edison mixed up a thermos of ice-cold lemonade and handed it to David to share with us during our adventure. Karen and I pushed the shopping buggy back across the street to our house, where my sister ran in the garage and got her bicycle and a rope that was about 10 feet long. Karen told me, Kimberle, and David to climb in the buggy. I got in first and sat down, then Kimberle climbed in and sat down in front of me, then David got in and insisted on standing in the front of the buggy. David was about five years old at the time with the face of an angel, so we usually did just what he wanted. My sister told David to give her the thermos of lemonade, but David stood firm on holding the lemonade. My sister tied the rope to the back of her bicycle and then attached the rope to the front of the shopping buggy. Karen hopped on her bicycle and began to peddle down our driveway as fast as she could and yelled out, “Hang on!” Did I forget to mention that our driveway was up on a hill? Well, we went down that driveway pretty fast and before you knew, the shopping buggy swung way out to the left as my sister turned her bicycle to the right. Kimberle, David, and I changed our laughter and delight to screams of panic and fear. The buggy swung back to the right and finally flipped over in the yard of our other neighbors, the Julius Hobbs family. Needless to say, we all flew out of the buggy, but landed safely in the grass. I remember looking over at little David to see if he was all right and there he was, lying flat on his back but still clutching that thermos of lemonade. We all ended up laughing and before you knew it, David and Kimberle wanted to do it again.

I remember one hot summer day when I spotted a shopping buggy sitting in the carport of our neighbors across the street, David and Kimberle Edison. I ran back inside the house and told my sister Karen that the Edison’s had a genuine shopping buggy at their house. Karen and I thought that we could have all sorts of fun with something like that, so we ventured across the street and inquired as to how they got the shopping buggy. Well, Mrs. Edison’s father was Mr. Hershel Rayburn, who was Summer vacation back in those days also

meant spending days on end at the Plant City Swim Club. My family was lucky enough to be one of the many members of what was considered to be the place of all places for fun in the summertime. The Swim Club was a private, members-only club located at 502 East Young Street, complete with on-duty lifeguards, fullservice snack bar, restrooms, locker rooms, billiards room, kiddy pool, swimming pool with two diving boards, tetherball court, volleyball court, vending machines, football field out back, and ample parking. Some of the many families that I remember as members were the Cecil Everidge family, the Jimmy Redman family, the Charles Zinner family, the Bill Parolini family, the Curtis Weaver family, the Giles Smith family, the Julius Hobbs family, the Robert Edison family, the Ben Knox family, the Bruce Galloway family, the Charles Bravis family, the Havard Howell family, the John Walmsley family, the Rodney Sparkman family, the Carl Brownlee family, the Earl Shearin family, the Thelma Brock family, the Ken Wolfe family, the Dan Gorman family, the Eddie Tolar family, the Willam Wester family, the Richard Grinstead family, the Porterfields, the Causey family, the Pace family, and the Lillie Belle Davis family, just to name a few. I can remember how, upon entering the Swim Club, you had to sign in and the attendant would check to make sure that you were a member in good standing, which I now think meant that you and your family were paid up in the dues department. The attendant would also make sure that all girls had on a rubber swim cap. How embarrassing! Back then, there were caps with flowers, caps with bows, and the ever popular Plant City Swim Club Swim Team regulation white rubber swim cap with your name written across the front with black marker pen. Once inside the club you would go claim your lounge chair, spread your beach towel out, and get ready for a big slathering of zinc oxide across your face and sun block all over your body from your over-zealous mother or someone else’s mother who thought you needed more protection. Back then it was a club and a private club at that, but we all became so close, just like one big family.

Everyone looked out for each other. If one child looked like they were having trouble in the water, it did not take two seconds for the lifeguard or someone’s parent to jump right in the pool and help that person out. If there was bad weather coming, the teenage lifeguards would blow their whistle and yell out, “CLEAR THE POOL!” and everyone got right out until we were cleared to get back in. When a child ran around the pool or got too rough, you would hear the whistle blow and believe me, the child stopped what they were doing. There was respect shown to the parents and lifeguards back then, no question about it. Coach George Holbrook was our swim coach who taught just about all of us kids how to swim. He was tough and he made us work, but he made sure that we, without a doubt, knew how to swim. One of my favorite times at the Swim Club was lunchtime, when you would hear the lifeguard yell out, “snack bar’s open!” They had the best grilled hamburgers and ice-cold Coca-Cola’s that you ever tasted. They also had Lance crackers, potato chips, candy bars, and peanuts. The only part about lunchtime that I did not like was the part where you had to wait 30 minutes after you ate because they thought that you would get stomach cramps and drown. I also remember how the teenage girls would lay out in their lounge chairs on top of the pump house because they were just too old to be around the little kids. The pool was always full of kids playing Marco Polo, doing water ballet like they were at Weeki Wachee, riding on each other’s shoulders, or just floating quietly on a raft. By the end of the summer, we all were so relaxed with perfectly toned and tanned bodies. Oh! To be a kid again. Summertime is here again and it makes me a little bittersweet. I am now 50 years old, and David and Kimberle are all grown up with children of their own. I drove by the Swim Club the other day, only to find an empty vacant lot. I stopped the car, rolled down the window, and just sat there with a lump in my throat. It made me realize just how fast time marches on. I closed my eyes for a minute and I could hear the faint laughter of children, the splashing of the water, and my favorite words of them all: “snack bar’s open!” I will leave you with this question: Where, oh where, did that shopping buggy go?

The Redesigned 2013 Nissan Altima 3.5 SL Review by Brian West

The 2013 Altima has even raised the bar a little more. The exterior design features a traditional Nissan grill, but the headlamps and tail lamps have been swept into the side panels to look like extended eyebrows. The rake of the roofline is more graceful. The fenders are more flared, but the lines are swept into the side panels, so they aren’t dramatic. The five spoke wheels are nice, but nothing flashy. Overall, the exterior is very appealing, but very conservative and classy. The interior doesn’t disappoint either. The 3.5 SL includes a leather interior and wood grain accents. They’ve also included a push-button start, a nice feature not usually included in a car at this price point. Everything seems to be laid out exactly where the driver would want, and the controls make sense. You’ll find yourself quickly learning how to make all the adjustments you’d want. This four-door sedan offers comfortable seating for four adults. It doesn’t have quite the legroom in the back seat that is offered in the Maxima,

but you can always put those that are more vertically challenged in the back. I also noticed that the AC was cold. Even on a hot day, the car seemed to cool in a matter of moments. This is a great feature for our Florida summer weather. Under the hood, the 3.5 liter SL offers a V6 producing 270hp. Yes, 270hp. If you think you need more power, take a test drive first. Sure, you’re not going to outrun any of today’s muscle cars, but you’ll blow the doors off every other 4-door sedan in this price range. Speaking of test drive, that’s all that was left. The Altima 3.5 SL is all about comfort, especially for the driver. The gauges are well positioned and the ones that matter most get the space and premier placement. The V6 really delivers the feeling of the power it offers to the driver. Right away, I knew this was going to be fun. The 3.5 SL has a smooth comfortable ride and the road noise is very minimal, even at highway speeds. The transmission shifts smooth, even at a high-speed start from dead stop and pushing the car as hard as possible. If you’re interested in a Nissan Altima, take one for a test drive. You won’t be disappointed. And go out of your way to visit Jenkins Nissan. Tell them you read the review in Focus Magazine. Who knows, it might even help you get a better deal.

y son, my oldest, my baby, the golden child who was once slated to be valedictorian of his senior class, has graduated from high school. In January, he took his final exams, sold everything he’d ever owned, and headed off, alone, to backpack through Europe for three months. After wandering through Iceland, Scotland, England, Belgium, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Spain, he returned home, tired, but illuminated, and began to question everything he had ever believed was true and irrefutable about his life.

“Wow,” his eyes glazed over at the possibilities.

Two days later, we pulled into the parking lot of “Urban Oasis,” a one acre plot of packed sand and shell north of downtown that supports a hydroponic farm producing the equivalent of eight acres of soil-based planting. Cathy, who owns the operation with her husband Dave, met us as we stood marveling at the tiered growing system. Despite the impending, oppressive heat of a Tampa Bay summer, her plants spread out in front of us, prolific and verdant. Cathy was generous with her knowledge and genuine in her passion for the hydroponic system “Why do we work constantly just so that we they employed. We soaked up her wisdom and wandered the aisles of vertical planters can retire?” he asked. draped with lettuces, herbs and eggplants. “Well, we have to eat,” I answered. An hour later, we left, clutching a bag of “Well, why can’t we grow our own food?” “We can. But you will have to learn to wake undulating, oversized tomatoes that looked nothing like their grocery store equivalents, up before noon.” “Okay, I’d rather do that than spend my life but smelled like my grandmother’s kitchen garden. working for The Man.” Back at home, we made salads and sandwiches and still had tomatoes languishing on the counters. In an effort to use the bounty before it perished, I returned to my long departed grandmother’s cookbooks and resurrected a recipe for tomato gravy that was her favorite summertime breakfast staple. Hers was always served over toast, but I substituted And then he discovered “Hydroponics.” cheese grits as a base and topped it all with “Do you know about this?” He showed minced country ham, fried green tomatoes me a blog about the space-saving, soilless and a garnish of flash-fried collards. It was a historic, hydroponic, supper. farming practice. “Yep, I even know that there are some hydroponic farms here in Tampa.” I smiled and kept quiet. My son was officially becoming a hippie—just as I had done a few short decades ago. He wants to save the planet, be organic, live an “authentic” life. Sustainability, recycling, upcycling, hormone-free, free-range…he researched voraciously.

Ingredients

4 Tablespoons butter 1/2 medium onion, minced 3 tomatoes cut into3/8 inch slices ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 cup whole milk Salt and pepper

Directions

Melt butter in a skillet. Add onion and sauté until translucent. Dredge tomatoes in flour and add to pan. Cook stirring until tomatoes are soft and fall apart. Add salt, pepper and milk. Stir over low heat until medium-thick consistency. As my grand mom knew, tomato gravy over toast or a warm biscuit makes a wonderful, and filling breakfast, but… It is fantastic served over grits with sharp cheddar cheese thrown in at the end of cooking and topped with green tomatoes fried in corn meal and minced country ham and collards crisped in a little oil.
