Plant City kicked off the 2013 Christmas season with its 30th annual parade in the historic downtown area. Thousands of spectators attended to receive beaded necklaces and candy, to see their family and friends, and to welcome Santa Clause to the community. Speaking of kicking off the holiday season, Plant City resident America Locke opened up her home for a Hanukkah celebration, offering Christians a chance to gain knowledge about different cultures. This month we also highlight some other things to celebrate--Sherrie Mueller as the Mike Storter Award winner, the Mud Titan , the Plant City Dolphins Mighty Mites cheerleaders, and much more.

Feature: 2013: Year in Review

2013 was a great year for Plant City. Not only was the Florida Strawberry Festival a great success, drawing some of the biggest names in country music and some record-breaking crowds, but the community had so much more to celebrate, including the induction of new community leaders, several high school athletes signing with SEC teams next year, new hot spots, and more. Check out what we consider some of Plant City’s best stories of 2013 and reminisce on what your best moments of the year were.

Spotlight: Cutest Kids Contest

Moms and dads, aunts and uncles, grandmas and grandpas and other family members were excited to hear that we were continuing our annual December tradition this year--the Cutest Kids Contest. Several submitted photos of their children and thousands voted. Find out who were the winners and check out all of the contestants.

Business: Cameron Financial Management

Michael Cameron considers himself a teacher. Unlike most financial advisors who tell customers exactly what to do with little explanation, Cameron prefers to educate his clients on all their options, helping them better understand the market and how to protect their assets through a customized program.

Dining: Wasabi Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar

With about 15 years of experience serving along his cousin at Kumo Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi’s various Florida locations, Franky Wu decided to embark on a new venture—to bring a Japanese steakhouse and sushi bar to Plant City. Although the restaurant just opened in mid-November in the Lake Walden Square shopping plaza, Wasabi has been an instant hit with locals. Try their hibachi entrees or one of their numerous signature sushi rolls today for lunch or dinner.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

More than ever, it’s important this year to shop and spend local. Good things happen when you do. Just ask Kelly Morris, owner of Simple Life Outfitters, about the difference community support can make. The family-owned business in Valrico recently signed with a manufacturer that will market their SLO outdoors apparel line in Bass Pro Shops across the country. Thanks to customer loyalty, local will soon go national. A definite way to pay blessings forward is to make purchases in our own neighborhood. Holiday entertainment for families is always plentiful here as well. The traditions continued as Plant City and the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation welcomed families to the annual “Lights of Love” at McCall Park on the night before excited crowds cheered for the floats in the annual Christmas Parade downtown. And thanks to the Plant City Community Choir and numerous area churches, Christmas music and drama productions provided opportunities to invite others in sharing the “reason for the season.” This month’s issue features our annual Cutest Kids Contest winners and a “Year in Review” spotlight by Amanda Deck. What a treat to look back at the Strawberry Festival, a couple area mud runs, the new train viewing platform at the newly-named Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum, Two Henry’s Brewing Company, a Keel & Curley one millionth bottle produced milestone, our many standout high school athletes earning Division I scholarships and our new City leaders: Mayor Mathis, Police Chief Steven Singletary, and Fire Chief Daniel Azzariti. Congratulations also to PCHS College and Career Specialist, Sherrie Mueller, as the second winner of the Mike Storter Award, presented at The Youth Alliance’s annual Jeans & Jacket Gala. As we close out 2013, our Focus staff hopes our readers and consistent advertisers understand what your generous support and kind comments have meant to us. By embracing our mission to share your good news, grow your businesses, and benefit your charitable causes, you’ve made this year one of our best yet. For you, we are truly thankful.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE AND PREGNANCY

A pregnant woman’s body needs to be healthy and strong with the ability to function properly in order to handle the effects of pregnancy and childbirth. This is all very vital for the uterus, ovaries, and related organs and structures that allow for a healthy pregnancy. The slightest interference of nerves could adversely affect the mother and the developing fetus. The doctor of chiropractic locates these vertebral misalignments and helps correct them to enhance function. Drugless Healthcare Neither prescriptions nor over-the-counter drugs are safe. A drug must be evaluated for maternal benefits against risks. Antibiotics (including Tetracycline), aspirin, alcohol, cigarettes, illegal drugs, cough syrup and cold and flu medications have been linked to fetal damage and miscarriage. How can Chiropractic Care Help? Chiropractic care provides a flexible and balanced spine, hips and pelvis; internal organs without postural stress and freedom from nerve stress. Chiropractic care also normalizes the body functions of women who have problems with

toxemia, manipulations shorten labor by 50% to 60% and lessens medication requirement by as low as 50% and postpartum depression is rare. A Doctor of Chiropractic has also been know to be able to correct a baby who is at risk of being delivered breech by using the Webster Technique that was developed by the late Dr. Larry Webster. As the author of this column, I have studied with Dr. Webster and I have a copy of all of his research that was signed and personally given to me by him. A survey was conducted of nursemidwives, 93.9% recommend patients to alternative healthcare providers and 57.3% were recommended to doctors of chiropractic. SPECIAL NOTE: Please join us in praying for our Nation and it is our Prayers that you have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Blessing, Dr. Dukes and Staff

Year in and year out, the students from Plant City High School are far and above more visible to these committees, and it is a direct result of Mueller’s efforts. Mueller said, “This recognition is special to me because I worked with Mike Storter. I was able to see him teach, coach and mentor our youth. f you drive by North Lakeland’s Boots N Buckles Saloon after sunset on any given weekend, you’ll know for certain that something exciting must be going on, as the parking lot of the entire plaza will be filled with vehicles. In fact, performers like Easton Corbin, Rhett Akins, and Justin Moore are just a few artists who have graced the venue’s stage. The night of Sunday, November 24 wasn’t any different, as hundreds of people filed into central Florida’s premier country music destination, but this time for a different occasion-to celebrate the life of late Boots N Buckles co-owner Doug Hall. When Hall passed away unexpectedly on November 4 at age 35, he left behind more than his job at Boots N Buckles. Surviving were his two young sons, Ashton and Braden.

Article by Amanda Deck According to close friends and family, the two boys were the main focus of Doug’s life. He was a son, a brother, a father, a friend, but most importantly, he was a father. “He adored his boys and would do anything for them,” said Boots N Buckles owner John Russ. “They were his top priority.” The November 24 event allowed those who knew Doug well a chance to give back to his boys. A Doug Hall Legacy Trust fund was established through Regions Bank, and local businesses gave more than anyone could have imagined. Even local music acts were in the giving mood and played during the event for no charge. The lineup consisted of Clemons Road, Patrick Gibson, Brian McConnell, Brian Sutherland, Justin Grimes, Jesse Palm, and Rainer Berry-who all played throughout the entire event, from 3 until 11

A MULTI-CULTURAL EVENT PLANT CITY RESIDENT HOSTS HANUKKAH CELEBRATION Article by Cheryl Johnston

Leviticus 23, Locke reminds her visitors of John 10:22, which references Jesus in Jerusalem during the “feast of dedication.” Today, families light candles on the hanukkiah, a special nine-light menorahlike candleabra, one on the first night, two on the second, and so on until all nine shine, a reminder of God’s provision. Christians see the center “servant” candle as representing Jesus.

The holiday commemorates the miracle of the oil in the re-dedication of the previously desecrated Holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E. Locke’s joyful celebration always includes a prayer, a teaching (in English and Spanish), music and refreshments. Folks like Paul and Linda Pickern of All-Pro Pastors come “to honor this season of our Lord.” They always invite friends to celebrate with Davidicstyle dancing, lively conversations and a love for the Bible. They needed enough oil to burn eight days in the Temple’s menorah, but could find only enough for one. In faith, they lit the menorah and miraculously it lasted eight full days.

“Each time we learn something new. It’s amazing that America plans this for so many from different cultures and backgrounds. Watching the children light over 30 hanukkiahs was simply a beautiful reminder of our Savior! You could almost see lights switching on inside minds as people pondered the meanings of the gazebo adorned for the Bride and the Scriptural examples placed throughout her home. As a result of his hobby, he is determined that everyone he meets can relate to and enjoy trains the way he does. Evan’s affection for trains and anything railroad-related is absolutely contagious. And if you attend church services with him, his prayer request is always the same: “Pray for trains and sick people.” His mother helped him arrange his collectibles in two first-class displays, near the library’s main entrance and in the children’s area. The Plant City YMCA will host the 2nd Annual Dean’s Ride on Saturday, January 4 at 8 a.m. The event promotes healthy living, and is named in honor of longtime Plant City resident, Dean Snyder. Snyder passed away this year after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. The Bike Show will be held on Saturday, January 4 in Historic Downtown Plant City from 5 to 9 p.m. The show features hundreds of bikes from all over, with everyone riding in for a relaxing afternoon in downtown. For the enthusiast, there are bikes of all styles, makes, models, and both new and old. The show is always a little different, but there are often antique bikes where owners have spent countless hours restoring them to their former glory. And like the Car Show, many of the downtown merchants are open longer hours to accommodate the crowds. The 2014 Chairman’s Banquet will be held on Thursday evening, January 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Trinkle Center. The event serves as the installation for new chamber officers and board members and the formal passing of the gavel from the outgoing to the incoming chair. This is always a great evening, and a lot of fun. The evening always ends with a pre-recorded video skit performed by the chamber board. This year’s skit will be very entertaining.

THREE STEPS TO PLAN

FOR LONG-TERM CARE COSTS Column by Edward Jones

A

recent Harris Interactive/Health Day poll reports 68 percent of people surveyed are worried about the cost of long-term supports and services. Follow these steps to help ensure you are prepared for the costs associated with longterm care, should the unexpected happen.

STEP 2: CONSIDER YOUR FAMILY

STEP 1: CHOOSE THE RIGHT SOLUTION

If you’re married, your retirement plan needs to account for both your and your spouse’s potential long-term care needs. If assets earmarked for daily living expenses instead need to cover the costs of unexpected care, this could derail both spouses’ retirement goals.

The costs of long-term care can be staggering. The 2013 national average rate for a nursing home private room was $83,950. A nursing home semi-private room averaged $75,405 per year, and a fulltime home health aide cost $44,479 per year.*

The right financial strategy to manage longterm care needs also can help you avoid having to rely on your loved ones to cover the expense of your care, and protect your assets to provide for a surviving spouse or other family members.

STEP 3: APPOINT A DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY

A few options are available to help manage this potential expense: To prepare for the possibility that you are unable to handle your own affairs due to Medicare: While Medicare is the primary a physical or mental disability, you might source of health care coverage for retirees, it want to consult with your legal advisor covers only a small percentage of long-term about putting a durable power of attorney care costs. seCret new Home Community at Park PlaCe

A

s the year draws to a close, we can look back and see that it has been good for many homeowners and homebuyers—thanks to home affordability, low mortgage interest rates, increasing home values and job growth. At the recent 2014 Real Estate and Economic Summit in Orlando, Florida Realtors Chief Economist John Tuccillo predicted continued growth in the state’s housing, though at a slower pace than in 2013 due to changing market and economic conditions. Tuccillo also predicts close to a 10 percent increase in residential sales and home values to rise approximately 5 percent a year. A modest recovery for the commercial market is seen for 2014. As for the agent population, it has experienced a surge of growth in 2013 thanks to a modest recovery in the market. Many who left the business several years ago are re-entering; many are enrolling in courses for the first time. Training will be crucial for these, as well as for those agents who have experienced the last 2-3 years of slow and steady recovery. It is a good time to plan for learning new skills, enhance and improve what is already in place, and be ready for a shifting market.

Did You Know…

The holidays can be a great time to market your home? Here are a few of the many reasons: 1. People who look for a home during the holidays are more serious buyers. 2. Serious buyers have fewer houses to choose from during the holidays and less competition means more money for you. 3. Since the supply of listings will increase in January, there will be less demand for your home. Less demand equals less money for you. 4. Houses show better when decorated for the holidays. 5. Buyers have more time to look at homes during the holiday than they do during the week. 6. Some people must buy before year-end for tax purposes. 7. You can still be on the market, but you have the option to restrict showing during part of the holidays. I would like to take the opportunity to Thank You for reading this article throughout the year. I appreciate your comments and support. o not listen to people who say you need at least 20 percent for a down payment on a conventional mortgage loan. Take HomePath financing, which allows home shoppers to buy a Fannie Mae foreclosed home with only a 5 percent down payment on a conventional loan. Besides the buyer’s own personal funds, this 5 percent can come in the form of a gift, a grant or a loan from a nonprofit organization, state or local government. Also, an appraisal is not required (a $375475 savings), and mortgage insurance is not necessary despite putting down less than 20 percent. So how did the HomePath program originate? First, you need to understand more about Fannie Mae, which owns the foreclosed homes.

A+

RATING

DECEMBER 2013 focusplantcity.com

Fannie Mae purchases loans from mortgage lenders (the secondary market),

replenishing their funds so they can continue to lend mortgages. Fannie also takes those purchased loans and sells them as mortgage-backed securities to investors on the open market. This further increases the supply of money available for mortgage lending and new home purchases. The government-sponsored entity ended up with the foreclosures after the housing bubble had burst in the late 2000s. With the large scale of loans going into default, Fannie became the owner of these properties. HomePath is a way for the GSE to unload these homes in a way that not only helps itself, but also helps consumers find affordable housing. If you have any questions about this, call 813-707-6200, and my team will be happy to help you with this.

SCORING AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

ALIYAH GREGORY DEDICATES SENIOR SEASON TO AUNT’S MEMORY

O

n September 8, 2013, 42-year-old Sean A. Bush was charged with the murder of Nicole Elise Bush, age 35. The victim’s estranged husband was arrested two weeks earlier, nearly three months after police believe that he brutally murdered the Fruit Cove woman on May 31. Nicole Bush, following the attack was able to contact a friend, who in turn, notified authorities who were dispatched to her home to find her near death suffering from blood loss resulting from blunt force trauma and multiple gunshot and stab wounds.

Gregory, who lives by “Put God first and everything else will fall into place” is working on a website that will assist potential donors in making their pledges, but until the website is finished, those who are interested may contact Gregory’s mother Kimberly at 813-684-7919 or Aliyah via email at aliyahgregory.ats@gmail.com.

Sean A. Bush had previously been arrested in New Jersey in 2001 for attempted murder, but pleaded to lesser charges and served four years probation. Bush had been a suspect from the very beginning but an arrest was finally made after DNA evidence linked him to the murder. What has been a traumatic event for the family has also been the impetus for one of the top high school female basketball players in the Central Florida area to address the issue of domestic violence. Aliyah Gregory, a 5’11” senior shooting guard at Strawberry Crest High School and the niece of Nicole Bush, has dedicated her final season for the Chargers to the memory of her aunt. In doing so, she is also linking any success she will have this year to aiding victims of domestic violence by asking for donors to pledge a monetary amount linked to every point she scores. Her campaign has been titled “Assist and Score.” “I am asking that people pledge $1 per point but we will accept any amount of money. Some people have pledged more and some people have pledged five cents per point. We will also accept a one-time gift, but I prefer that they pledge an amount for every point that I score,” said Gregory. Gregory, the daughter of Ramone and Kimberly, is hoping that her efforts will also help her attain a secondary goal of scoring 2,000 points in her high school career. Over the past three seasons, Aliyah has scored 369, 437 and 597 for a total of 1,403 points, leaving her 597 short of her target. If she has a season equal to last year’s total, she will become only the 11th player

DIANA CORZINE F

rom piano to Kung Fu to baton twirling lessons, Diana Corzine’s mother worked hard to get her daugthers involved in the Plant City community.

“My family moved to Plant City when I was 5,” said Diana. “We bounced around just keeping busy and getting acquainted with the city and its people.” A year later, when Diana was 6, she was signed up for rec league soccer at the Otis M. Andrews Sports Complex. “Since then, I’ve never stopped playing,” she said. “I found a passion for it that none of the other activities had inspired.” Diana is now a senior at Plant City High School and is having a standout season so far for the Lady Raiders varsity soccer team. The team captain and midfielder has compiled 14 goals and seven assists—totaling an impressive team-leading 35 points—in just 10 games. One of Diana’s biggest fans is second-year PCHS girls soccer head coach Caleb Roberts: “Diana brings a sense of focus to our team and strives to be better. She is always working to improve her game and making others around her better. Over the past season and throughout this year so far, she has shown improvement in every aspect of her game while keeping her positivity and leadership qualities off the field. She will be continuing her soccer career after she leaves PCHS, and I wish her all the luck going forward.”

Diana will be attending Trevecca Nazarene University next fall where she’ll be suiting up for the Trojans’ soccer team. Trevecca is a Division II school located in Nashville, Tennessee. “I couldn’t be more excited because my dream has always been to play in college,” said Diana. “What I couldn’t have foreseen though was that the university recruiting me would be the one that all three of my sisters have attended. It’s really exciting to do what I love and be around the people I love.” Although Diana is undecided as to what career path she will take at Trevecca, she’s looking forward to the holistic college experience. “Hopefully my first year will give me an idea of what is available and what really interests me,” said Diana. “And as for the school, I just appreciate that Trevecca, as a Christian university, will not only provide an education, but encourage me in my spiritual walk as well.” The Youth Alive Council member, PCHS Cross Country runner, Plant City Church of the Nazarene Youth Program member and Praise Team Drummer, and National Honors Society member, has many to thank for helping her get to the position she is today. “My mom and dad have always been there, encouraging me, driving me to practice, and helping me conquer some of the fundamentals in the backyard.” In regards to inspiring past coaches, Diana continued, “I think in particular Rick Lott was one of the first people to notice me and help me see my potential. He invited me to try out with his daughter, Ericka, for a spot on the Valrico Cyclones when I was 11 or 12, which introduced me to a completely new level of competition. Since then, he has really been a tremendous encouragement.” With so much to look forward to regarding her soccer career, Diana is focused on making her final season as a Lady Raider a memorable one. With a current record of 10-1, the PCHS girls soccer team is hoping for an extensive run in the playoffs. “The goal is always to go as far as possible,” said Diana. “And I think this year that’s going to mean state championships!” Good luck to Diana Corzine as she finishes out her senior year and pursues her dream of playing college ball!

ast year, the Plant City High School Girls Soccer team traveled further into the annual FHSAA tournament than any PCHS soccer squad before them—boys or girls. Although they made an impressive run, their hopes of becoming 4A State Champions was cut short, defeated by the Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton) Mustangs 1-0 in the regional finals. This year, second-year head coach Caleb Roberts and his team are determined to get back to the Regional Finals and win. Chaplain Middlebrooks looked at me and said: “When your heart is so full of love there is no way to hold it all in, and then you cry.” Next week, when I sit beside my sister and my mother I am sure that I will cry as I watch my sweet nephew who is now a wonderful young man walk down the aisle and start a new chapter in his life with his new bride. I would like to leave you with my thoughts for Tony.

L

ast night, I drove through town on my way home from a Chamber of Commerce function and noticed all the people leisurely strolling through McCall Park looking at the Christmas lights. I decided to park my car and just watch the people go by. I saw people pushing baby strollers. I saw people walking their dogs. I saw older couples taking photos of their grandchildren. I saw people just sitting by themselves. People were in the park to make memories and to recall memories. Whatever the case may be….. people were in the park because of the magic of Christmas.

My sweet nephew Tony…I just want you to know, wherever your life takes you, my heart shall also go. When I learned that you were coming, it was a wonderful night! But little did I know, my darling angel, you would become my guiding light. I held you and helped raise you, kissing and hugging life’s pains away, but now there’ll be another, starting on your wedding day. So go into the world, my love, and chase all the joy you can. I wish you all life’s happiness on the day you marry Lauren Danielle Smith, your best friend.

They were so talented and so well put together you would have thought that they were members of Elvis Presley’s entourage. They were so handsome and so talented. They recorded several record albums. They were smooth as silk. The Tribunes are no longer together as a group, but their memory, their music, their talent, and their message will live on forever. I have had so many wonderful Christmas celebrations in Plant City to remember, from the parades, to the school parties, the church programs, the downtown celebrations, shopping, the visits with Santa, and the times with my family. All of my Christmas memories have been exciting, unforgettable, and filled with love and family celebration. This Christmas, my family and I look forward to making new memories with a new family member when my nephew, Anthony Michael Herold, marries his best friend, Lauren Danielle Smith.

I thought back to a special childhood memory that I had of McCall Park. It was the year 1970 and I was 8 years old. My dance school, which was Jackie’s School of Dance, had been asked to perform several numbers at the Christmas program in McCall Park. My class did a tap routine to the song Jingle Bells which consisted of about twenty little girls tapping on Front Desk call bells to the beat of the song. We thought that we were so cool. We followed that number with a jazz routine to Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. It seems corny now, but back then to an 8-year-old little girl it It is hard to believe that my little Tony has was a big deal. grown up and is old enough to take this major step in his life. James Graves, fine art photographer, began his interest in photography while a student at USF. After graduating with a B.A. in English Literature and an M.A. in Library and Information Studies he embarked upon his lifelong career as a librarian in the Hillsborough County public library system. Now that James is retired he returned to his interest in photography once more and began participating in various photography workshops throughout the country. It is while on one such workshop in Maine that James was able to focus his

Article by Heather Davis photography towards black and white images created on film and began the project “Marking Questions.” The title “Marking Questions” reflects James view of the world as being a place of mystery and disorder. Rather than create photographs that answer questions, he instead creates photographs that raise or mark the questions themselves. James documents the world around him by marking a moment in time and allowing the images to speak like poetry on both the conscious and subconscious level. All of the photographs in the “Marking Questions” portfolio are silver gelatin prints from 120 film negatives. James states that he has a slowed-down approach to making photographs using film and medium format cameras. The process of using film allows him to create photographs that are deliberate, contemplative, yet intuitive narrations. James Graves currently has a photograph appearing in the The Tampa Review, as well as being featured in the Lenscratch blog. He recently exhibited a solo show at the Bruton Memorial Library in Plant City. In the past his work has been exhibited and received awards in juried outdoor shows, indoor group shows and two-person shows. You will need pine cones, white spray paint, and a hot glue gun. Lightly spray the pinecones white. You don’t need to spray them completely. This will make the pinecones appear to be a little snowy. Then sprinkle glitter on the pinecones before the paint dries. With adult supervision using glue gun, apply large amount of glue on the bottom of pinecone and loop red ribbon to the glue. The bottom of the pinecone is now the top of your ornament. You can add additional glue and apply holly sprigs to the bottom. ALL-IN-ONE PIE

RECIPE OF THE MONTH Recipe by Gail Jones

All-in-one Pie is a combination of cheesecake, pumpkin pie, and pecan pie. Photo by Gail Jones

I

am an oddity in my family. An outcast of sorts. It doesn’t have anything to do with my personality or life choices...well now wait, maybe it does. But that is another story for another type of column. Perhaps a letter to “Dear Abby” or a quick trip to a therapist. Wait…we are talking about food here right?

twenty-five ingredients. I sigh, indulge in the tiniest sliver of everything on the sweets table and compliment profusely. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the flavors; it’s just that I am not the rabid dessert fiend that the other ladies are. Hey, I accept them… And it’s a good thing because my lovely daughter, the one who was born looking like me and seemed to have inherited many of my personality quirks has, as a teenager, turned into her own person. And she LOVES desserts. She also loves crab with butter and fruit and vegetables, which I like to take credit for, but the girl can bake like nobody’s business.

The issue that separates me from everyone else at the tables of our family get-togethers is the fact that I am completely ambivalent to sweets. Dessert to me is something that makes you feel overly full at the end of the meal. Or worse yet…keeps you from having a second helping of roast turkey with crispy skin…or mashed potatoes with giblet gravy garnished with a few extra hard boiled eggs, This year, for the holidays she has perfected or green beans, or that slice of bacon you a pie…well actually, it’s three pies in one, for swiped from the skillet…. people like me who just want a little taste of everything.
