Strawberry season in Plant City will be celebrated in a new way this year as Bright House Networks, along with Wish Farms, will be hosting the first annual Strawberry Picking Challenge in February with funds raised supporting the Redlands Christian Migrant Association. As we begin to celebrate our twelfth year serving the Plant City community, I had a chance to reflect back to the days when we first began. When our distribution manager Tony couldn’t work over the holidays, the necessary delivery duties meant that Zane, my oldest son, now 13 and I would invest some manual labor and driving time to distribute the magazines. Two men and a truck…and this photo that now floods my mind with sweet memories. Rising to the distribution challenge, I donned my courier cap, printed the distribution list and headed out. Most small business owners can relate, right? We wear many hats and do what we must to keep things rolling along…you know, like sweeping floors, cleaning the office bathrooms, emptying the trash and of course, making sure customers have their products on time.

Apparently, Zane had been watching his mother and I work over the years. Most of the time we weren’t even aware we might be teaching by example. Like most parents, we simply do the necessary to meet their needs, encourage them to do their best, and squeeze in some family fun whenever we can. This photo is now a treasure. Even though he’s still a student, my firstborn is now headed into manhood. He’s bright, compassionate, responsible, and FOCUSed. I watched him enjoy his accomplishments that day…and I wonder now, “What work will his future hold?” In this photo, I see potential and productivity and promise. I smile inside for the moments like these when dads, despite our failings, can get a little glimpse that we might just have been doing a few things right.

Youth Parade Applications Available

The Youth Parade has been presented by the Plant City Civitan Club for several years and will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. The theme for the parade this year is Florida’s Best Family Recipe! The Plant City Civitan Club has coordinated the Youth Parade in Plant City for the past 40 years and this year is no exception. Pat Pogue, Youth Parade Chairperson, has been visiting schools to encourage participation in the local parade. The parade lines up at the Farmers Market and will follow the same route as in the past several years. The parade departs at 11:00 a.m. from State Farmers Market on the corner of Martin Luther King Blvd. and Alexander Street and continues north on Alexander Street and west on Reynolds Street. The parade will pass the Florida Strawberry Festival grounds on Reynolds Street and disburse near Sammonds Road area or the ﬂoats can disburse at the Farmers Market for the safety of everyone.

ince 2009, the United Food Bank of Plant City has been attracting hundreds to the John R. Trinkle Center for its annual fundraiser, the Celebrity Chef Dinner. This year’s event will be the 6th, and if it’s anything like last year, it is sure to be a success. After three years with Chef Jon Ashton, and a year with former New York City firefighter turned chef, Joseph Bonnano, the Food Bank reached out to Whitney Miller. Miller was the season one winner of the FOX television show MasterChef. Most impressive about her victory, she won as a 22-year-old against people with far more experience and some more than twice her age. This year, Miller will return to Plant City for an encore performance that is sure to draw a crowd. Miller is from the small town of Poplarville, MS (pop. 2834 as of 2012). To say it’s a small town may be an understatement. Miller said, “We got our first red light after Hurricane Katrina and our first McDonald’s last year.” Although she hails from a small town, Miller’s creations in the kitchen are the likes of someone with years of experience around the globe. She simply

This year, Miller will present a few recipes from her second cookbook. However, back by popular demand, she will repeat the pan-fried chicken everyone enjoyed last year. Although Miller is cooking on stage, she couldn’t possibly make enough to feed the 300 plus attendees. So Fred’s Southern Gourmet Catering will take on that responsibility. They will make the evening meal using Miller’s recipes. Last year, many said it was the best meal they’d ever experienced at a catered event; an experience the Food Bank hopes will be duplicated this year. Food Bank board member, Bruce Rodwell, will Emcee the event. The event will also feature a silent auction and of course great food and fun. Miller will also be available again this year for book signings. She’d hoped her second cookbook would be available in time for the event, but will have plenty of copies of her first cookbook available. Tickets are $75 each and tables of eight start at $800. have always held Knights Elementary as one of the best schools around. I speak from experience as I too once taught there. I cannot say enough about the atmosphere developed by the faculty and staff. It seems it has only gotten better over the years. For a school to really work, it all begins with the administration. If you have a great bond and friendly environment straight from the top, it just topples down to everyone else…a ripple effect. I have to say that Knights Elementary has just that. Janine Hall, the school principal, has what it takes to build that perfect atmosphere at Knights Elementary. They are well known for their “family environment” and always work as a team.

LOCAL MAN TO BE HONORED

AT FIRST ANNUAL RAILFEST

n February 8, the City of Plant City will host the first annual Railfest, honoring the impact the railroad had on our community’s growth and success. The event will include a ceremony to honor local railroad man, R. W. “Bob” Willaford, and his gift to Plant City.

“I grew up in Plant City,” says Willaford. “I could’ve sold it all but then all I would’ve had was a big pile of money. Now my grandkids and great-grandkids, and other people’s grandkids can enjoy the history of the trains for years to come.”

While raising funds for the now-open Plant City Viewing Platform and Tower, Commissioner Mike Sparkman met with Willaford. He realized what an asset Willaford was holding onto and began attempts to get it donated to the Union Station Depot.

Willaford spent much of his life riding the rails as a locomotive engineer for Atlantic Coastal Line. When he retired, he searched the nation for a collection of railroad memorabilia. Through the last few years, he has hosted holiday events to share his collection with the neighboring kids. “He didn’t want his stuff to become Now he has donated it for future children scrap iron and we wanted it to enrich the heritage of Plant City,” Sparkman said. “So and rail fans to enjoy. it was a win-win situation.”

Willaford donated 28 items to the City of Plant City, valued at more than $200,000. Most visible are the 1963 Seaboard Caboose and 1964 Whitcomb Locomotive displayed in front of the train depot. Local companies donated their services to get the equipment into place, including Brewington Towing, Wetherington Tractor Service and C. J. Bridges Railroad Contractor. Their contributions will also be honored at the Railfest ceremony.

Drawing fans and families alike, Railfest is scheduled for February 7-8. Community sponsorships have funded family-friendly activities while the organizers have worked with CSX and local train enthusiasts to maximize train-viewing at the platform during the day. “Railfest looks to be an exciting event that will draw local Tampa Bay families and railfans from around the nation,” said Horwedel. “We will celebrate Plant City’s beginnings in rail and our future through rail.” Friday night’s event, 6-10 pm, will include two free movies on a big screen TV with donated Blue Bell ice cream and popcorn. Saturday’s event, from 9 am- 6 pm, will include barbeque lunch, Bounce Houses, Kiddie Train rides, Museum tours, Scavenger Hunts and more. For more information visit www.plantcityrailfest. com.

For years, area high schools have put together solid FFA programs with many students going on to serve as state and even national officers. As a community, we want to recognize these programs, their efforts, and the accomplishments of the students. College scholarships are a great thank-you, especially when they come from the help of the community. This year, the Strawberry Crest High School FFA program has put together a clay shoot to raise money for college scholarships. Wesley Joyner, his father, Richard, and Henry Gaudens have taken the lead for this first event. Wesley is a Florida FFA Foundation board member and parent of two Strawberry Crest FFA students, and has a lot of experience in the FFA. Richard is a member of the Florida FFA Hall of Fame, and Gaudens is also a parent of a Strawberry Crest FFA student. Wesley said, “Shooting clays is really the new golf tournament; the new way to fundraise. It’s really catching on. Fortunately, we’re getting some great help from people that have done this before.”

Here’s how it works. Anyone can participate. There will be several divisions and two levels – beginner and professional. Kids of all ages can participate, as long as their parents are willing to allow them to compete. No worries, mom and dad. There will be plenty of adult supervision on hand; including adults at each of the shooting stations. This is an individual competition, so you’re competing against everyone. Shooters will report to each of 8 stations. Each

Your entry fee includes the rental of a gun, if needed. You’re also welcomed to use your own gun. A 410 gauge shotgun is likely the most popular for younger kids, but you’ll find adults shooting with 20, 16 and 12 gauge. So there’s really no excuse. If you are free from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25th, you need to make time to participate in this great event. Adults are $75 and youth are $50; which includes your gun, ammo, clays and lunch. This is a great deal.

“T

he Bard of Collins Street”. That’s what they called him. L.B. Mack that is. Everyone knew him as “L.B.” He ran the feed and seed store on South Collins Street, just south of downtown and across the street from the fledgling McGinnes Lumber Company branch.

The Macks moved to Florida about 1921, first to Wauchula, then to Vero Beach, back to Wauchula, where in 1930 Mack worked as a salesman in the seed business. The Macks then moved and settled in Plant City in 1931, purchasing a home on West Baker Street, where Ruby Irene Mack was still residing in 2014.

During the Great Depression, men who were down on their luck would come to L.B. for a special favor. They could not afford a gift, not even a special card, for their wife’s birthday, or their anniversary, and L.B. would write a poem for them. The men were proud to present such a unique and thoughtful gift. He sometimes wrote as many as 200-300 of these in a year’s time. L.B.’s son, Thomas B. “T.B.” Mack has collected twelve scrapbooks of his father’s poems.

L.B. Mack worked for Kilgore Seed Company for several years. After a dispute with the company, L.B. opened up his own feed and seed store on South Collins Street, not far from the Kilgore Seed store. Mack’s store was initially sponsored by Florida’s Favorite Fertilizer, but Mack later bought Young Thomas Birdell Mack played football it outright. for the Plant City High School Planters. L.B. was one of these. Lonnie Birdell Mack was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, in July 1893. By 1917 he was married to Mary Magdaline “Maggie” and they had a son, Thomas Birdell Mack, born in October 1914. Lonnie was a baker at Dodenhoff ’s Bakery in Barnwell. Lonnie and Maggie’s son Robert was born in 1917 and daughter Ruby Irene followed in 1920.

The Strawberry Classic Car Show will be held on Saturday, January 18th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in Historic Downtown Plant City. The car show features cars that are at least 25 years old, with many classics on hand from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. This is a great family event if you’re looking for a relaxing evening. Several of the downtown merchants are open longer hours to accommodate the crowds. You’ll probably run into many of your friends and neighbors. There are several food vendors, and the atmosphere is great.

t is no secret that today’s buyer is somewhat selective, even though the real estate inventory is not as robust as in year’s past. Regardless, there are several factors that buyers are considering when purchasing a home, especially the Millenials (Generation Y, birth year between early 1980’s-2000) who represent a significant niche in today’s market. 1. Quality of the neighborhood – The National Association of Realtor’s 2012 Profile of Buyers and Sellers revealed that neighborhoods are really important to buyers, but that neighborhood choice varies by household. 2. Convenience to job – Commuting is a necessary evil, but homes that are close to work enhance work-life balance, a growing priority for many Americans, especially Millenials. 3. Overall affordability of homes – With job markets tight and retirement funds depleted or eroded thatnks to the Great Recession, it has never been more important to keep housing related costs as low as possible, ideally no more than one third of your pre-tax income.

6. A mortgage – In today’s tight credit environment, getting a mortgage can be a challenge. Buyers should be willing to consider homes below what they may qualify for in order to bump up the loanto-value ratio. 7. LEONARD’S GOLF LESSONS BEGIN WITH VALUES

n August, The First Tee of Tampa Bay began its second year of golf instruction and life lessons to kids from age seven to eighteen at the Walden Lake Golf Course. At the center of the program is its Senior Program Director, Jeff Leonard, who has been involved with The First Tee following a successful college career and a ten-year professional career. Leonard, who met his wife Sarah (Huntsman), a Plant City native, while both were students at the University of Tampa, is focused on sharing what he has learned

However, in the summer prior to his sophomore season, Leonard dedicated himself to the game and with the help of a friend on the golf team, he picked up tips and mimicked what he observed. The next year, Jeff improved his average ten strokes to a 75 and by the end of the season, was a third team All American. The next year, Leonard not only improved, but won the NCAA individual title as the nation’s top Division II golfer leading the Spartans to their first national title in any sport. The next year, he duplicated his previous year’s performance and UT again won the NCAA title. No other Division II school in NCAA history has ever produced the individual champion and the team title in consecutive years. Following graduation in 1987, Jeff became the golf coach at his college alma mater while pursuing a professional career on golf ’s mini-tours. Four years later, Jeff advanced to the Hogan tour and in 1993, he joined the Nike Tour. The follow year, Jeff had the two biggest wins of his career, winning the Jamaica Open and the Massachusetts Open, propelling him to the PGA Tour in 1995. After a year on the PGA tour with one top ten finish, Leonard played two more years in Asia before retiring in early 1997. “Once I got away from playing professionally for about five years, I was able to see things much clearer. I can now teach the way I see it. Looking back, I see golf as a process… a mastery of a mindset that helps you not get so wrapped up in the past. Golf mirrors life. It’s about what you do next… the next shot… not the previous one.” Today, life also includes his faith (he is the interim music director at his church) and family. He and Sarah have two children, Emma (11) and Will (9). His brother Scott is the lead singer in the highly popular acapella rock group, Rockapella, and his father Chuck, a former Superintendent of Schools in Indiana, is now an employee of the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL. hayna Lawrence grew up around basketball. As a child, her family had her play it often.

“It’s in my genes,” said Lawrence, whose smile lights up when she talks about the sport. Her father, David, had played for Plant City High School and was known for being a great shooter. Her mother, Stacy, had played volleyball and softball for the Raiders. Now, instead of playing, David and Stacy have been watching their 15-year-old score her way to January’s Athlete of the Month. The sophomore leads the PCHS girls basketball team in scoring, averaging more than 13 points a game. She can shoot, post up and get easy baskets from turnovers created on defense. In the last year, PCHS coach Wilton Wilkerson has worked with Lawrence on her scoring, particularly her post game. She is quick to credit him for helping make her an “all-around player.” “She can shoot, but we prefer to keep her around the basket. If you sit back and watch her, you’ll see she has all the post moves, great moves,” said Wilkerson, who is in his first year as the varsity coach for PCHS. Wilkerson met Lawrence when she was in the sixth grade. His daughter had played on the same team as Lawrence, who recalls being “the tallest person on the court.” “She was probably 5-foot 9, and she had good basketball skills,” said Wilkerson. “You could tell she could play, probably from being coached by her father.” Wilkerson approached the middleschooler and has been helping develop her game ever since, coaching her in the AAU leagues.

Lawrence stands a noticeable 5’11” now, an attribute that contributes to her 4.47 blocks and nearly 8 rebounds a game this season. JANUARY 2014 focusplantcity.com

With height and an all-around scoring game, Lawrence aspires to play basketball in college one day. Her dream would be to play for the University of Florida, where she would also like to pursue a business degree. “I love the Gators,” she said. It’s obvious she loves basketball, too.

By Ashlyn Yarbrough Damaris’ friendly personality makes her a well-liked leader. She is currently the AVID Historian, NHS Chaplain, and part of the Student Advisory Committee. In addition, Damaris also participates in Key Club, Youth Alive, and Science Club. In addition to her school organizations, she is an active member of her church’s youth group! In between her schoolwork and extracurricular activities, Damaris makes time to serve her community. She has selflessly been involved in multiple organizations throughout town. Some of these include Relay for Life, Christmas in the Park, and serving strawberry shortcake at the Strawberry Festival. Apart from these events, Damaris spends most of her free time volunteering at Plant City Little League. She helps serve at the concession stand and assists the coaches with any needs. Not only is Damaris an incredible student, but she is also an outstanding role model to her community. With her standards set high and determined perseverance, there is no doubt that this Senior of the Month can, and will, accomplish anything.

elfless, that is the word that describes Mario Leon. His goal in life, is to make things easier for others, and he has worked hard to accomplish that goal. He has a passion for people, science and mathematics, and that passion is what will make his goals and dreams become a reality. Mario is ranked 29th in his senior class of 408. He would like to attend a 4 year university and obtain a degree in chemical engineering and then continue his education by attending medical school and becoming a pediatric physician. Mario is the current president of the PCHS Science Club, where he competes in many competitions. He has been a member of the National Honor Society since 2011, played Junior Varsity football in 2010, and has been active in the Key Club since 2010. While in the Key Club, Mario completed 120 hours of community service. He helped raise awareness of growing health problems in our community, he volunteered at various Special Olympic events, and he worked to help preserve Plant City’s historic district.

Mario was honored to receive the Jan Henrick Achievement Award, which awards students with outstanding personal achievement in and out of school. He has already completed some of his college education and is excelling in his classes. His passion for people has led him to set the goal of giving back to the community he grew up in. He wants to inspire children to pursue their dreams and never give up. Once he achieves his goal of becoming a pediatrician, he would like to open a medical practice where he is available to all and will not turn anyone away for any reason. The passion that Mario has for people and for his community is not a passion that is often seen in a young person. It is truly an honor to recognize Mario Leon as Plant City High School’s Senior of the Month.

n 1970, Nissan (then Datson) debuted the 240Z. It was an instant classic. The lightweight car featuring an inline 6-cylinder engine produced so much power, it was quickly dubbed, “a highway missile.” Sunshine State Federal Savings and Loan President, Floyd Hall, had one of the early 240Zs. I remember seeing him climb into it, even at 6’6”. Ask him about it. He will happily share some fond memories.

With 2014 already in full swing, I’d like to reactivate the spirit of gratitude we were all so excited about just a few weeks ago. Today, with so many refugee stories in the news, I’m feeling grateful we have a place to live.

I know a lot of fancy mansions, stocked with abundant supplies of food, technology, fine furnishings and more, where there’s no security there because faithfulness, commitment, and self-giving love have never found a home there.

Our Wake Forest house may be a work in progress, and Rebekah may well be planning projects I have yet to imagine, but it is our sanctuary, our safe-place; and in that regard we are privileged beyond the wildest dreams of much of this world. - We have clean drinking water at the touch of a tap (close to one billion have no access at all, let alone right there in their home; and lack of access kills children at a rate equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every four hours. - We have electricity (2.5 billion do not). - We have heat and air-conditioning. - We have a refrigerator stuffed with food, plus an ample pantry, and I’ll be going out to buy more today (chronic hunger is an issue for approximately one billion people). - We live in a safe neighborhood. - We have well-lit streets with sidewalks. - We are free to come and go as we please. - We can say what we like in public. - We can worship without restriction….

When I was a kid my parents, my sister, and I would ride over to Searstown in Lakeland to shop. My father would park the family car in front of Sears and in the store we would go. Back in the 1960’s and 1970’s Sears was the store that had everything. We would look at sporting goods, tools, perfumes, shoes, records, record players and my least favorite of them all, were the clothes. My mother would drag me to the section called: “The Lemon Frog” (which was for chubby little girls.) My mother never mentioned

that part to me. She was always very careful with my feelings and just said that the “Lemon Frog” section had a more generous cut. We, as a family always enjoyed a visit to the television department. My sister and I would always sit on the carpet in front of a brand new color television set and watch a game show like: “The Newly Wed Game” or “Truth or Consequences” while our parents talked to the salesman. If my parents needed to shop in another department and we were tired, we could and would sit in front of that television set forever without moving. Back in those days, people did not have to worry so much about watching their child’s every move. If we were shopping in Sears and my mother turned around and I was gone, she would send my sister to the appliance department to get me. I was totally fascinated with the vacuum cleaners. I thought that it was magic how a beach ball would go round and round in the air and not get stuck in the vacuum cleaner hose. I also loved to stand in front of the air conditioners and watch the colored fringe blow in the air. Sometimes I would sing in to the air conditioner vents and get embarrassed when the salesman caught me. My favorite of all the new appliances were the new refrigerators. I would love to open

In getting to know Jose, the artist behind the work, it is easy to see how much the art is a reflection of its creator. Jose lives a life that is alive, fearless, and shows a wholehearted desire to live life to its fullest. After spending the first half of his life traveling the world for work, learning five languages, and raising two sons, Jose has found home in Plant City with his wife on a beautiful horse farm called CJ Farm. As a self taught artist Jose only recently began to paint two years ago after being encouraged by his wife. Jose admits for the need to always have a project, something to do that engages both his mind and hands. Painting fit the bill perfectly and he has been painting ever since. “Art is a reflection of your personality, Jose explains, it is very important for me to paint and share it with others to enjoy.” “Really, he adds, what is life without art, music, and love?” With this love for art and passion for life Jose and his wife hope to one day help others by providing combined therapy of horses and art for children with special needs. “I’m not afraid to try anything, Jose says, but if I’m going to do it, it’s going to be right.”

kay, maybe we should just call it a bit chilly. After all, much of the rest of the country is in a deep freeze. Heck, Niagara Falls looks like a sand drip castle made of ice. My brother who lives in Pennsylvania often sends us text photos of the thermometer in his car when he heads to work in the morning. A few days ago, it showed 4 degrees. And that wasn’t the wind chill…it was really 4 degrees.

Also known as, “The Morning Owls,” Thompson has played at more than, 2000 gigs across the country since starting his adventure in 2003. The music veteran showered the K&C winery with cover tunes for 4 hours, starting at 7 and playing through the night until 11. With a variety that ranges from The Beatles to Jimi Hendrix to Led Zeppelin, Thompson had no trouble keeping the Plant City native crowd appeased throughout the night.

Since 1930, The Florida Strawberry Festival has been crowing some of the most beautiful, smart and charming young ladies around at its annual scholarship pageant competition. This year will be no different, when on January 25, the Lions Club will host families and friends of several young ladies who hope to become the 2014 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen. Hundreds of spectators are expected to ﬁll the Festival Grounds to witness 2013 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen Kelsey Fry crown to one of the 25 lucky contestants on Saturday, January 25 at 6 p.m. Who will be the next Florida Strawberry Queen and face of Plant City? He was preceded in death by siblings, Barbara Nolen and Charles Waters. Bobby served as a PVT-2 in the US Army from 1951 until 1954, was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, was a manager at Felton’s and Wyndle’s groceries, and loved to fish. Surviving are sons, Dustin and Thomas Waters; daughters, Kendra Harrell, Debbie Rauh and Marie Richardson; brother, Jerry Johnson; sisters, Edwina McMllian, Jackie Shenefield; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren.
