BACK 2 SCHOOL BASH HOSTED BY KINGDOM CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES

BY DEANNA HURLEY

O

n Saturday August 2nd from 10 am to 2 pm, Kingdom Christian Ministries will host their first annual Back 2 School Bash for Plant City, Lithia, Valrico and the surrounding communities. Free activities including face painting, a bounce house, horseback rides, food, among others. The church is located at 6627 Lithia Pinecrest Road. The activities will be fun, but this event aims to serve a deeper purpose. Free backpacks filled with new school supplies necessary to every student will be provided to ease the burden of back to school purchases which, for many, are out of reach. “The beginning of the school year is hard on kids already, but walking into class on the first day of school without basic supplies adds insult to injury for those who are struggling

18

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

financially” said Children’s Church Pastor Austin Tyson. “We are eager to serve our community.” Organized by elementary, middle and high school needs, the backpacks and supplies will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. In addition to the backpacks, several church members have volunteered to provide free haircuts to the students. “Our church family exists to reveal the heart of Christ to our community,” said Pastor Shad Fitzpatrick. “Our hope is that every child and family who attends the event will feel His love in a positive way.” “How selfish are we?” Tyson expands. “It’s an uncomfortable question with, if we’re honest, equally uncomfortable answers. If my Facebook feed is any indicator, then the answer is very, very selfish.

I constantly see inspirational quotes about not letting anyone get in the way of your personal success. We have no problem asking for more for ourselves, but we don’t push to do anything or give anything for others. We’re more concerned about our team winning the World Cup than our neighbors losing their homes to foreclosures. I don’t know of any method to gauge selfishness, but there are plenty of studies that show how poor our poor are and how rich our rich are.” The numbers are shocking. According to Kids Count Data Center, 1,576,720 Florida children in grades K-12 qualified for free or reduced lunches for the 2013-2014 school year. Over 71,000 of those students are registered in Hillsborough county schools.

Over 3,000 of those students are registered as homeless, according to the Florida Department of Education Bureau of Student Assistance. With these numbers in mind it’s easy to see how simple gestures, such as free school supplies, can impact families in a positive way. “The truth is, your kids probably know a classmate who doesn’t know where their next meal will come from. Their parents are overwhelmed. As a people we are so quick to say, ‘That’s their fault, they should fix it’, but that’s the wrong approach. Love speaks volumes,” Tyson adds. “I would encourage readers to find a struggling family and tell them about this event. Their kids deserve a good time, and they deserve a break financially.” Kingdom Christian Ministries is a non-denominational church and welcomes all visitors to experience the love of God in a safe and non-judgmental setting. For more information, or to donate towards the event, visit www.kcmlithia.org or call 813-685-4240.

HCSO SERGEANT MOZELL PORTER RETIRES AFTER 30 YEARS BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

O

ne thing Sergeant Mozell Porter loved about her work was “never knowing what each day would hold.” Since her retirement celebration March 14, 2014 after 30 years with the Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office, Porter is now loving life at a slower pace. These days instead of pursuing lawbreakers or investigating crimes, she’s re-energizing by sleeping in, savoring her coffee with morning paper, caring for her husband home and mini-farm menagerie of a donkey, horse, cows, chickens, and turkeys, and volunteering once weekly in the day surgery area at South Florida Baptist Hospital. She and Dean also enjoy NASCAR and getaways to Hayesville, North Carolina. In her HCSO career Porter served on patrol, in detention, with the Special Investigations Division (Sex Crimes, Crimes Against Persons, Homicide, and

Cold Case Team), as a Corporal in the Street Crimes Unit and as Supervisor/ Pilot in the Aviation Unit. The Tampa Tribune featured her in “Women with a Star” ( June 22, 2003) and she earned a Distinguished Performance Award in August 2006. Her final 5.5 years as Sergeant in the Child Protective Investigations Division were “the toughest.” The physically and emotionally taxing responsibility for the welfare of children required her constant review of reports, copious research, interaction with the various agencies, supervision of civilians and a younger work force, and awareness of adults who try to use the system. “Whatever I do I give 110% to complete the job,” Porter explained. “I worked late nights on the computer, reviewing reports and researching cases. I didn’t realize the 12-16 hour days’ stress level until now. Even off duty, I rarely had time for myself.”

L

The woman who retired with more than 1700 unused sick time hours and 800 unused vacation hours said, “I’ve always loved my work, and my husband graciously accepted that. I’m thankful for the HCSO years and now for this new chapter in our lives.” Porter paved the way with numerous female HCSO firsts such as: • delivered a baby girl on SR 60 • detective on first DNA case of serial rapist in 13th Judicial Circuit trial • first female Transportation Deputy for male inmates • first female deputy to fatally shoot suspect in line of duty (1986) • first female supervisor of Aviation Unit While working she also accomplished the Commercial Rotocraft Pilot license (1998) and her BA in Criminal Justice, 2007, Summa Cum Laude from St. Leo University, MacDill Center. “I’ve believed in police work since just before my Plant City High School graduation when I told mother I wanted to be a police officer,” Porter offered. After her work as a records clerk for the Plant City Police Department she volunteered with the HCSO auxiliary unit in detention and patrol. “Very quickly I knew law enforcement was what I was meant to do with my life.” “The morning on my way into work that I helped deliver a baby girl for the obviously terrified couple, for example, I felt it was a blessing God put me in a particular place and time for them.” “People should realize this is no ordinary job. The day-in/day-out stress takes its toll, emotionally and physically. Despite the danger, it’s rewarding as all get out. Still, if we’re called to it, we love it, and we wouldn’t do anything else.” “I’m very proud to have served with the best Sheriff ’s Office in the U.S., one of the first to be accredited. We were family,” she explained. “Everyone tried to do their job well so people would feel secure, get help they needed and have their problem resolved. Even though realizing we might die, a peace comes in the sacrifice. I always tried to do good for others, to share and encourage, and to make my life count.”

BLACK VOICES FROM THE PAST BY WENDY BROWN

a’Maleeq Moon grew up on Alabama Street in Plant City, went to Plant City High School, and graduated in 1987 from King High School. Loving music as a kid, Ra’ Maleeq was heavily involved in each school’s music program. Today he plays the piano, drum, keyboard, and even the trombone. According to Moon, “Music is a powerful force whether we use it wisely or unwisely. People are affected by what we hear.” Though musically inclined Moon joined the Navy after high school and was trained in aviation electronics. Becoming skilled in weapons navigation, sonar, laser, (our local youth was attached to an anti-sub squadron hunting enemy subs). After eight years in the Navy, Moon pursued careers in the financial and technical world up North and overseas. Asking why he came back to Plant City, Moon responded, “My roots are here. Sometimes you have to leave and then come back when you realize what is more important.” Missing grandma’s bread pudding, homemade vanilla ice cream, large family gatherings, hometown friends, and local hangouts, Ra’ Maleeq now makes Plant City home again where his creative juices flow. Always artistic and technologically savvy, and working 24/7 with the adage: “Eat, sleep, drink, work,” Moon is inspired by scenes and conversations in everyday life. Creating books, plays, and music, he strives to tell stories “that educate, enlighten, and empowers

people.” Currently working on a science fiction fantasy novel, he has published various novels including Risk and Promise, Just Don’t Blame Me, and the plays “Slice of Temptation, and “Fade to White.” In 2009, his play “A Love That Divides” was honored with a one-night performance at the Kennedy Center. Special to his heart is his newest endeavor “Black Voices: From Chains to Change.” Seeing black history images portrayed degradingly in January 2014 prompted Moon’s newest artistic expression. Using iconic black history figures in an inspirational way with grass roots music, bits of speeches, video, and words of enlightenment, Moon created a montage of struggles, with celestial soul music to inspire equality. More importantly, this venture earned his late mother’s stamp of approval. Through twenty-five tracks, you’ll journey with vignettes from historical civil rights figures. Powerful pieces that promoted change include: President Obama’s education speech, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I’ve Been to the Mountain” speech, and various sound bites from Nelson Mandela, Afeni Shakur, Malcolm X, Angela Davis, and others. Ra’LaMeeq Moon honors his heritage while inspiring others “to know themselves and their place amongst humanity.” Do you have the passion to change the world? MOVIE MAKER IN PLANT CITY

kidnapping him. Leaving his office one night, Burke was unaware he was the target of an obsessed killer. He was not aware his well-kept secret was no longer a secret. Someone knows his dark past. Burke’s career teeters on the brink of destruction. His life rests in the hands of a maniacal murderer, so either way he has much to lose. Burke faces life-changing decisions: confess his sins or take them to his grave. Washington is also in the preproduction stages of his next movie, “Molasses.” Stephanie is abused as a child. She grows up and abusive relationships are her norm. She meets Marcus, a widower with a six year old daughter, Molasses. He takes Stephanie away from the chaos and teaches her how a lady should be treated—sweet like molasses. BDubb Entertainment is seeking cast and crew members for this project. Making a difference in the lives of the actors and crew compels Washington to write and produce movies. “I want to teach the craft of

film making, particularly to young people. I want to create an atmosphere where families can participate in the movie making process together.” He related the story of a “Steel Chamber” crew member. The young man learned about the cameras used in movie production, how to angle shots and other aspects of filming. Shortly after the movie’s completion, the young man was killed in a driveby shooting. “I was devastated,” Washington said, “when I heard about his death. He had a future in film making, but it was tragically cut short.” Washington’s wife, Cindy, and daughter, Sariah, are key players in the film business. He said Sariah’s favorite line is, “Lights, cameras, action.” Looks like he’s grooming another generation of film makers. To contact BDubb Entertainment, call 863-703-0280 or visit bdubbentertainment.com. “Steel Chamber” is available on Amazon.com. View the trailer at steelchamberthemovie.com.

“ You oughta be in pictures, You’re wonderful to see, You oughta be in pictures, Oh what a hit you would be!” This song written and sung by Rudy Vallee in 1934 could be Bobby Washington’s theme song as he writes, produces and promotes his movies. Miami born indepdendent filmmaker, Bobby Washington, moved from south Florida to Lakeland six years ago with his eye on central Florida’s untapped film making community. His focus on using local talent and scenery enhances his story lines. “The surrounding communities of Plant City, Lakeland, Winter Haven and others are like gold mines waiting for someone to unearth the treasures,” Washington said. “We have

state parks, hundreds of lakes, miles and miles of beach properties that lend natural settings for movies of all genres. Local businesses also provide backdrops for filming.” Washington’s current movie project, “Steel Chamber,” was shot in Plant City and surrounding locales. Some notable Plant City locations in the film are the Knights Inn, Edward Medard Park, Don Johnson Enterprises construction site, and a pier on Turkey Creek Road. Washington’s use of the regional settings showcase the area. The premise of “Steel Chamber” tells the story of when after a long day of trial attorney Terrance Burke is abducted by a deranged serial killer. The killer, angry at the perceived corruption and secrecy within the judicial system, seeks to extract some sort of twisted retribution by

SPOUTING

SUCCESS PLANT CITY AREA SCHOOLS CONTINUE TO GROW THEIR AGRICULTURE PROGRAMS BY BRIAN WEST

“Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil, and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field.” – President Dwight D. Eisenhower

Drive through Plant City and you’ll see a lot of sites: not much different than most small towns. Travel through the outskirts of town, and you’ll see a lot of agriculture – also not much different than other small towns. What you can’t see from the comfort of your car or truck is the interest, commitment, dedication, and overall support for agriculture shown by the families in our small town. These families raise their children here, and all that support and love for agriculture comes to fruition each year during the State of Florida Future Farmers of America Convention.

Our FFA students have always had strong showings at the local, district and state level, but this year was definitely one of the best.

T

his year was the 86th Florida FFA State Convention, and was held June 30 – July 4, 2014 at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando. It wasn’t that long ago that Plant City had two high schools – Plant City and Turkey Creek. Ok, maybe that statement is relative. Then, a new Plant City High School was built in the early ‘70’s and Turkey Creek became a middle school. Fast forward to the ‘90’s, and school’s enrollment was swelling to the point that an additional high school became a necessity, which lead to the construction of Durant High School, and just a few short years ago, another high school is need – Strawberry Crest. Through it all, Plant City has stayed true to its agricultural roots. Our FFA students have always had strong showings at the local, district and state level, but this year was definitely one of the best. 2014 saw Durant, Plant City and Strawberry Crest High Schools competing, along with Marshall, Tomlin and Turkey Creek Middle Schools. In fact, Plant City middle schools performed

28

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

well enough to prove that Plant City will continue to have a strong showing for years to come. There were almost 4000 attendees this year – including students, advisors, judges and guests. There are more than 17,000 FFA members in the state of Florida, and you must earn the right to attend the competition, and to compete. There are more than 50 different categories of competition and Plant City had a spectacular showing. Marshall Middle School had 19 students make the trip to Orlando. Usually Marshall has 8-10 students that attend, but this year was a record. One competed in the Prepared Public Speaking contest – 8th grader, Hannah Spivey, and she placed 2nd in the state. The topic for Spivey’s speech was on robotics in agriculture. Alicia Price, Marshall’s Advisor, said, “Students compete throughout the year for the opportunity to compete at higher levels.” Marshall’s students were: Hannah Spivey, Destiny Cox, Alexa Diaz, Zoe Odom, Kenzie Shelby, Emily Phillips, Kenzie Collins, Sienna Bradberry, Josie Perkins, Alyssa Johnson, Kalynn Kunz, Ariana Rosato, Baylee Risner, Serenity Jopek-Miller, Michael Merrill, Chris Urbine, Anthony Smith, Alex Tucker and Michael Falkenstein. Jason Steward and Kayla Giorgi were the Advisors for Tomlin Middle School. Tomlin was recognized as a Premier Chapter; one of only four chapters in Hillsborough County. Their Parliamentary Procedure Team won state title. Team members included Kendall Gaudens – Chairman, Caroline Brummer – Secretary, Mackenzie Steele, Matthew DelCastillo, Lily Batley,

Reagan Brown, Madi Conrad and Anna Ress. Wesley Joyner, who has spent his life involved at some level or another with ag, along with an incredible amount of experience and currently serving the board of the Florida FFA Foundation, said, “Parliamentary Procedure is the king of all contests. This team blew it out. It wasn’t even close. High school is judged a little differently, but based on Tomlin’s performance, they would have come close at winning the high school competition. They were that good on that day.” 6th grader, Emma Poole, was a and one of nine FFA members from across the state selected to perform her talent on stage. Any appearance onstage at the state convention is a big deal. She played “Peace in the Midst of Storm” on the piano. The Meats Judging Team placed 1st in the state, and included: Matthew DelCastillo, Cole Harrell, Tyler Wright and Garrett Barnes. Ornamental Horticulture Demonstration teams were: Artistic Arrangement (1st place) – Abbie Deweese and Reagan Tears, Landscaping (1st place) – Madi Conrad and Delaney Flower, Consumer Use (2nd place) – Reagan Brown & Kendall Gaudens, Production Category (2nd place) – Lily Batley and Katelyn Yarbrough. Their Agriscience team: Plant Systems (1st place) – Lily Batley and Reagan Brown, Environmental Systems (2nd place) – Delaney Flowers & Katelyn Yarbrough. Their Forestry team placed 2nd – Clayton Brock, Kyle Brooks, Matthew DelCastillo, J.P. Prescott, Selena Ortega and Sydney Swartman. The Dairy Judging Team placed 2nd – Gracie Lee, Dalton Vanderford, Chas Waller and Sean Yagins. The Vegetable Judging team placed 2nd – Russell Butler, Jeremiah Ford, J.P. Prescott, Sydney Swartman, Savannah Tucker and Noah Zeff. Turkey Creek rounds out the middle schools. Buddy Coleman and Alison Sparkman were the Advisors. They competed in Premiere Chapter, which has many different types of required achievements throughout the year. One of those included a community outreach component. The students had visually impaired students throughout Hillsborough County come to Turkey Creek for an ‘agriculture in the classroom’ event. These visually impaired students were paired with regular education students from Turkey Creek. They went to the field where they were taught and had the opportunity to experience picking strawberries by feel. For most, this was their first time in a strawberry field. A petting zoo was also brought in for them to get a hands-on experience with many different animals. The FFA students also held a fundraiser for Relay for Life, donating more than $1000 to the cause. Turkey Creek had 13 students attend the state competition. They placed second in livestock judging. Students from Turkey Creek included: Cole Hanson, Jacob Gainer, Kenneth Hattaway, Katie Callahan, Connor DiPianta Haven Futch, Sierra Linton, Katie Westmoreland, Olivia Whitman, Haleigh Butler, Ethan Fernandez, Ashlyn Dempsey and Aubrey Davis. Not only did our middle schools perform well, but the high school teams had a great showing too. Durant, Plant City and Strawberry Crest all came away with titles of their own and sending a message to everyone else in the state that the greater Plant City area is committed to agriculture.

The team members were Mariah Kunze, Kaitlyn Taylor, Clint Walden, Alissa Shepard, Miley Feaster, and Keri Greenwood. They also took 1st place in Job Interview. This was one of a few individual accomplishments for Feaster. She also placed 2nd in Prepared Speaking and was selected as the Area V State Vice President. There were three students in the final four for Proficiency awards, and two of them won: Kassidy Hastings and Alex Fernandez. Other winners included: Jacob Burnette, Star Green Hand, Cassidy Hasting, Proficiency award for Sheep Production, and Alex Fernandez, Proficiency award for Landscape Management. State Farmer Degrees, which is the highest degree given by the State Association, were awarded to Jacob Belisle, Dayton Dry, Mylie Feaster, Miranda Lane, Alyssa Shepherd, Alex Fernandez, Cole Edbrup, Konnore Long, Heather Ross and Tori Griffith. American Farmer Degrees, which is the highest degree given by the National FFA, were awarded to Haley Smith, Morgan Belsley, Kennedy Dean, Jerri Rowell, Jesse Coleman, Kelsey Newsome, Miranda Mayo and Kennedy Dean. Leigh Carson was the Advisor for Plant City High School, and also serves as the Department Head, which means she’s very busy. This year,

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

Plant City’s students competed in Ag Issues. Teams from around the state chose an agriculture issue important in their community, and then developed a way to present the information. “One team presented their information as a political debate. Judging is based on how factual the information is, their overall presentation, creativity and a10-page portfolio describing the issue and addressing potential questions. Plant City’s issue revolved around the use of the soil fumigant, Paladin, which is an alternative to Methyl Bromide. Complaints began popping up last year when a sulfur smell seemed to be lingering in eastern Hillsborough County as strawberry farmers prepared their fields. Many placed the blame on Paladin, which became a timely topic for our students. Plant City’s team included Ari Fry, Ashlyn Yarbrough, Gresham Stephens, Benji Padgett, Megan Todd, Taylor Grimes and Lauren Schism. This team of freshmen (about to be sophomores) – in their first year of competing in this category, won the state competition. This was the first state title in several years for Plant City and the team will go on to represent Plant City at Nationals in St. Louis in October. Carson said, “We want to thank the parents for all their support, and the community for allowing our kids to be connected and being so positive for them.” Susan Mayo and Michelle Cesario were the Advisors for Strawberry Crest, and like all the other Advisors, they put in an incredible amount of work and dedication to helping our students be successful – and it showed. Strawberry Crest competed in Ag Issues, Creed Speaking, Job Interview and. They also had a student considered for state office – Victoria Harris. Their topic for Ag Issues was medical cannabis. Creed Speaking is a competition of reciting the Agriculture Creed, and effectively answering questions about how the creed applies to people in the daily lives. At the end of the day, they placed 2nd in Ag Issues with team members Corey Newcomb, Savannah Vida, Marcus Hobbs, Morgan Lee, Shannon Gill and Haley Flack. Haley Riley claimed 2nd place in Creed Speaking and Harris was selected as State Secretary. 16 students attended the convention, many of them attending leadership training classes during the convention. Anna Conrad receive the Star Green Hand award. Joyner said, “Plant City [area] students enter and excel in the Leadership contests.” As you can see, Joyner is right. Our students came home with so many accomplishments, a lot of great memories. If you’ve ever wondered about the future of agriculture in and around the Plant City area, this is quite a testament for our area. We are proud of them. For those that are going on to Nationals, we want to wish them all the best.

PREVENT

BLADDER CANCER

THIS COULD BE YOUR... “FACTS”

Don’t smoke. Not smoking means that cancer-causing chemicals in smoke can’t collect in your bladder. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you smoke, talk to your doctor about a plan to help you stop. Support groups, medications and other methods may help you quit. Drink water throughout the day. In theory, drinking liquids, especially water, may dilute toxic substances that may be concentrated in your urine and flush them out of your bladder more quickly. Studies have been inconclusive as to whether drinking water will decrease your risk of bladder cancer. Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables. Choose a diet rich in a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables may help reduce your risk of cancer.

2ND ANNUAL KIWANIS SPELLING BEE

Monday - Saturday: 10am - 9pm & Sunday: 12:30pm - 5:30pm

TO BENEFIT STUFF THE BUS BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

Y

ou can almost hear the fear and anticipation of adults who love words. It’s Kiwanis Spelling Bee time once again! For the second annual Kiwanis Spelling Bee representatives from area businesses will be on stage and with their supporters in the audience at the 1914 Plant City High School community venue on Tuesday, August 5 at 7:00 p.m. At this moment more than 30 business leaders are probably studying up on spelling rules, exceptions, roots, prefixes, suffixes, and the thousands of obscure words you discover in games like Scrabble, Word Jewels, and Words with Friends. Some of the most difficult last year were colloquial, innocuous, ostentatious, and the one Shakespeare’s plays are famous for soliloquy. Linton Jackson of Americare Ambulance won the 2013 trophy with the word “croquette.” Half the fun will

be seeing who has the courage to return again for another go at being named “top speller” in town. This event benefits the organization’s Stuff the Bus program, which gathers school supplies and cash donations to help more than 700 local students. Sponsorships are still available and will include two “VIP” tickets to the event. Additional tickets purchased through a Sponsor not later than July 22 will also be given VIP seating. These tickets cost $10 each as will the general admission tickets sold at the door. Contact David Wolf at 813-717-9300 or wolf.david.w@gmail.com (or Jim McDaniel at jamesrmcdaniel@msn.com) for additional information. For a fun evening and a chance to make fun of the nervous competitors, come on out for a great cause. Arrive early for the best seats, and feel free to bring a placard to motivate your hometown language arts specialists.

L even asked her to perform at half time for an upcoming football game in the fall. When she performs people just stand in amazement at how well the two work as a team. Only a sophomore at Plant City High School, she has contributed so much to help other dogs. She volunteers at Pibbles to the Rescue to help train rescue dogs in hopes that will help them get adopted quicker. It is a plan that works. She doesn’t stop there, she has also been known to show others how to train their dogs in order to compete. Offering her own time and skill, she never stops. Somehow, she finds time to volunteer, work with her own dog, and finds time to keep her academics

hen it comes to showing dogs, Nadia Acosta has what it takes to train a dog to do the tricks needed to compete in a show. She has trained her Bellgen Malinois named Hemus since he was nine months old. Hemus is now 4 years old and Nadia has many titles from dog shows to prove just how much he has grown not only in size but in skill as well. She started out volunteering at dog kennels for Ivan Balabanov, a two time World Champion in Schutzhund. He taught Nadia how to train her dog. As she was learning this training she started to become interested in other types of dog shows. The one she is most interested in is the Frisbee throwing show. In competitions for this event, Nadia and

34

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

Hemus are judged on the execution of the performance, how many catches Hemus makes, how well they work together, as well as the creativity. It is truly inspiring to watch her work with her dog. To hear her tell it, it isn’t work at all. She says, “I basically play Frisbee with my dog.” While having lots of fun and exercise, Nadia and Hemus win many competitions all over the United States. In fact, the two have qualified twice to compete in the World Championships, and has placed in sixth and seventh place. When she isn’t competing, she has been known to perform with Hemus at various events. You may have seen her show at the Florida State Fair or even the local Easter Egg Hunt. She has also been known to perform for local schools. In fact, her school as

in check. Nadia is a member of the National Honor Society, dual enrolled at Hillsborough Community College, and is an All Star Cheerleader. With the huge obstacle of arthritis at this early age, she doesn’t let it stop her. On some competitions it is very hard to throw the Frisbee in time for Hemus to catch it due to her pain from the arthritis. This is something she is learning to cope with. While many would give up, she keeps moving forward. Nadia definitely makes this sport look easy. If you are ever out at the Otis M. Andrew Sports Complex in the fall, you may want to check and see if the two are out there competing. It is very entertaining to watch.

Director Emeritus Al Berry served 43 years as a Florida Strawberry Festival® Director.

FLORIDA STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL®

DIRECTOR EMERITUS AL BERRY AND NEW DIRECTOR PHILLIP WALDRON

BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

A

long with numerous other leadership roles, Plant City native Al Berry has served 43 years as a Director of the Florida Strawberry Festival®—the longest tenure in that position to date. Now a Director Emeritus, Berry recently welcomed Phillip Waldron into his voting position as Director. Waldron, a former City Manager and retired U.S. Coast Guard Captain, started his Associate Director position after volunteering 12 years. He was then Director of Planning and Zoning for Plant City during the term of City Manager Nettie Draughon, who was an Associate Director of the Festival at that time. Draughon was Al Berry’s sister and the leader for whom City Hall is named. “I started helping Nettie with the trams and opening day ceremonies. When she stepped down in 1998, I was voted to take her place. Now to

36

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

step into Al’s position is a tremendous honor because he’s a Plant City icon.” Sixteen directors and fourteen associates govern the Florida Strawberry Festival® in their volunteer positions, with assistance from only a few year-round, paid staffers. Directors nominate replacements when one resigns to become director emeritus or passes away. All serve on committees to accomplish the required work. Approximately 2,500 other volunteers ensure the event’s continued success. One can imagine that during Berry’s 43-year involvement, he’s worked with every committee. “Originally in 1930, the Festival was a three-day event, and then expanded to five,” he explained. “I have watched it grow from little to nothing, to what it is today.” In addition to trams and opening ceremonies, Waldron’s committee positions have also included security, traffic control, governmental liaison,

long range planning, emergency preparedness, the Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations, and Senior Citizens Days on the first and the last Thursdays. The transition affords Berry more time with his wife Patsy and their three daughters’ families. Presently, his favorite pastimes include trips to the mountains, his “Rocking Chair Chatter” writing for In the Field, ham radio conversations, and discovering treasures with his new metal detector. Married 42 years, Waldron and his wife Sandra are both musically talented (she- piano and songwriting; he- lead guitar), working together in their home recording studio. Sandra also directs Plant City Academy of the Arts. Together they enjoy Tennessee mountain getaways and visits with the Florida and Michigan grandchildren. His final position after 34 years in the military was Assistant Chief of Operations for the Coast Guard 7th District, which encompasses Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and the Caribbean. The two aspects Waldron appreciated most, regimentation and helping people, can also be applied to his Festival work. “To play a role in shaping the Festival’s future by helping to set policy is a privilege,” he said. “You have

to have a love for it.” Another responsibility will be training future associates. “If you listen, you learn a lot,” Waldron suggested. “We constantly consider what we want the Festival to be 20 years from now. Paul Davis and his capable staff implement the vision we set without the need to micromanage. They make our job easy.” He continued, “Although we work long days, the public gives me energy. I like the interface with the visitors. Rather than just answering their questions, our attitude is ‘let me show you.’ It’s all about hospitality. For example, if someone is confused about where they parked, we help them find their vehicle. Our Florida Strawberry Festival is an ingrained heritage of Plant City. And it’s a director and his family. We are all involved.” Berry agrees. “My love for the Festival stems from the heritage my family has here, including my parents and grandparents. I enjoy working with so many people interested to see this thrive for our town and local industry. Ultimately, we always keep the customer in mind. We also like them to know you can’t find a community with as much character and charm as Plant City.”

Phillip Waldron, a Florida Strawberry Festival® Associate Director, since 1998, is the organization’s newest Director.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT HOSTED BY DOWNTOWN PLANT CITY

BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

A

fter the rain cleared and the clouds parted on the summer evening of Friday, July 11th, local shop owners located throughout Downtown Plant City kept their lights on and doors open. The occasion was Plant City’s first official Girls Night Out. The event was coordinated by Deanna Hurley, Plant City’s Special Events Coordinator to help promote business in Downtown Plant City.

38

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

With almost thirty local downtown businesses participating it was exciting to experience all the variety our Downtown Merchants have to offer. Many local businesses rolled out the red carpet to shoppers by offering free refreshments and extra discounts on merchandise throughout their stores. The Herban Cowboy for example offered complimentary wine and cheese and chocolate martinis

as well as 10% off of any storewide purchase. On Collins Street Par Interiors offered shoppers free Sangria while next door at Valerie’s Attic customers enjoyed free fudge and brownies. The Design 4 Marketing building hosted Bourbon and Bowties and The Fringe Boutique giving shoppers a rich variety of jewelry and boutique items for purchase. For the hungry shopper The Corner Store stayed open and hosted a full house while offering a ten dollar wine and cheese plate special plus live music. As an incentive to shop local for each $10.00 that was spent in a downtown merchant’s shop a raffle ticket was

awarded to enter a drawing to win various prize packages from many of Plant City’s finest establishments. The successful Girls Night Out offered the women of Plant City a chance to experience firsthand the hospitality, delicious food, and variety of shopping selections found in our own backyard of Downtown Plant City. As stated by the sign in front of the Herban Cowboy perhaps the whole experience could be summed up by these words “What happens on Girls Night Out…We laugh about all week!”

L LOCAL WRITER PUBLISHES

SHARDS OF GLASS A PERSONAL MEMOIR ON CHILDHOOD ABUSE

BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

Following the recent publication of her Shards of Glass memoir, Chris Washburn is currently writing its sequel, Shattered by Glass.

C

hris Washburn is a brave woman! And she takes hope in the words of author Kahlil Gibran: “Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.” The oldest of four children, Washburn was raised in upstate New York and wrote under the pen name CW Seymore to protect her family. She has written and published her personal memoir, Shards of Glass: A Little Girl’s Journey Back into Her World of Physical, Mental and Sexual Abuse. The book details the pain, emotional torment, confusion and rage she experienced at the hands of an abusive father for more than 15 years of her childhood. As a child, her constant prayer was, “Please, Lord, don’t let him find me.” “That was my earnest prayer,” Chris explained,“my cry in desperation for help, deliverance and rescue from the brutality of my father, which never came in the countless, cruel and horrifying actions he inflicted.” She added, “Through tears and in pain, experiencing shock or fearing for my

40

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

life, I uttered this prayer as I rocked back and forth, hiding in one of my many ‘safe places’ outside in the forest or cornfield, under my bed, in a closet and behind the couch where I was terrified, alone, helpless and so very afraid.” Washburn describes her journey into wholeness as “tremendously difficult,” calling herself, “still a work in progress.” “In the span of three weeks and many tears, I wrote Shards of Glass after the Lord’s gentle leading through the tender advice and counsel of my friend Marivel Ponce. When she asked if I’d ever been raped, I realized it was time the truth be brought into the light.” Ponce shared, “She came over one night, and we started talking about her situation and the horror stories of her childhood. I simply said, ‘You really should write a book.’ I told her, ‘I’ve never heard of a story like yours. You hear about them or see them in movies or on the news, but I’ve never met or heard of anyone with a story like yours. This could help you heal and possibly help others. I can only imagine how that affects people into adulthood.’ But Chris is a good person, very loyal, and still in the process of healing. Things will get easier for her with time.” Washburn acknowledges several locals for their listening ears, encouragement, faith, truth, and wisdom—Ponce, Stephen Rossiter and Christina DoVale, as compassionate and supportive friends throughout the process. “This book is healing for me, ending the silence and moving one step closer to the higher calling the Lord has planned for my life,” Washburn added. “My greatest hope is that these vivid snapshots will

The little girl’s eyes reveal the haunting fear Christina Washburn experienced in her “Shards of Glass” memoir.

help other survivors of abuse, verbal degradation and sexual molestation to find hope, healing and comfort in knowing they are not alone!” Now, through her faith in God and with the encouragement of others, she is ready to write the next book, Shattered by Glass. The continuing story will reveal how she has experienced the power of forgiveness, the hope of healing, and the courage renewed in spiritual growth. To purchase Shards of Glass and read the many reviews/testimonies,

visit online at www.amazon.com/ author/cwseymore and www.shardsofglasscwseymore.com Washburn is available for speaking engagements or interviews on topics related to abuse and the emotional impact that remains long after the trauma has ended. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? WE FOUND DOLORES STROPAGEL

BY DEANA GARRISON

K

nown by many parents in Plant City, Dolores Stropagel, is the caring and dedicated nurse at Dr. Aime’s office. Doloras has been assisting and giving her 110% to her job for the past 18 years. She takes her job seriously and all of the children that go through the office love her. Being a nurse is not the only thing that Stropagel does with a compassionate heart. As a child, she struggled with many obstacles children

44

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

shouldn’t face. Abused and hungry is not at the top of the list of childhood memories however, it is her inspiration to make a better future for others and do God’s will. Stropagel feels God has led her to help others through Plant City Church of God’s “Operation Compassion.” This is a special ministry that God put in her heart to construct and lead 14 years ago and has been going strong helping others with food and spreading the word of

Christ throughout her mission. She says, “I love the ministry, love the people…we are one big happy family.” Every Saturday from 10-2 you will find her at the Operation Compassion trailer on the Plant City Church of God grounds handing out food to anyone standing in line. Many walk away with a great amount of food to take back to their family. The donations they receive play a huge role in making this ministry

work, Stropagel urges anyone that is fortunate enough to have extra to have a giving heart and donate what they can to the Church so they can continue helping others. It will sure give you a great feeling knowing you did your part and a great blessing to those who receive your gift of love. I challenge you to think of your favorite meal and donate some items today. After all…as Stropagel says, “We are all one paycheck away from being the one standing in that line.” You never know what tomorrow brings. Wouldn’t you like to know there was a place to turn to if you needed food? Pastas, sauces, cereals, rice, and beans are just a few ideas to donate. Sometimes though, if you think of how a child may react to some special treats they don’t normally get, you may find yourself wanting to donate chips and special snacks to bring a smile. Sometimes, toiletry items are donated which brings a nice reaction to the people receiving them. You can take your donations to the Church office during the week or drop off your donations at the trailer on Saturday’s from 10-2. Monetary donations are always accepted and are of great help. You don’t even have to leave your home. You can mail your monetary donation to C/O Operation Compassion, 2103 Mud Lake Rd, Plant City, FL 33566. For more information call the Church office at (813) 752-4591. Plant City is surely blessed to have Dolores Stropagel. With her dedication and compassion for others, she has truly changed many lives through the power of doing God’s work. Let’s all help her continue on her mission to help others by donating at least one item. It won’t hurt and you may even feel better knowing you helped. Thank you Dolores Stropagel for being a positive role model for others in our community to follow.

PLANT CITY TURNS ATTENTION TO SOFTBALL IN 1999 PART 2 OF 2 PARTS

BY PLANT CITY PHOTO ARCHIVES AND HISTORY CENTER

R

olling off the success of being selected as the new home for the International Softball Federation world headquarters, city officials moved into a serious planning phase for developing the Plant City Stadium Complex into a world class softball facility. A consultant was contracted to prepare a report on the potential economic impact of converting the Plant City Stadium Complex to a softball complex. The consultant studied softball statistics from venues in Florida and across the South. The consultant’s final report was quite favorable to the establishment of a softball complex in Plant City and was delivered to the City Manager in mid-April 1999. The report stressed the impact of the relocation of the International Softball Federation as well as the necessity of serious marketing due to the number of popular softball venues already in existence in central Florida. It quickly became clear that softball was definitely in the air. About the same time as the softball study was being finalized, representatives of the Women’s Pro Softball League (WPSL) contacted officials in Plant City requesting a bid to host the 2nd annual WPSL All-Star Game, the first having been held at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, in July 1998. The consultant and city officials studied the bid manual and prepared a preliminary proposal and submitted it on April 15th – one day ahead of the deadline of April 16. WPSL directors were interested and requested further discussion and negotiations began. The bid was informally accepted about April 23, 1999. As representatives from Plant City and the Women’s Pro Softball League worked on settling the details concerning financial split, transportation, hotel accommodations, publicity, field conversion from baseball to softball specifications, staffing, etc., they also began plans for the formal announcement. That came on the morning of Wednesday, May 19, 10:00 a.m. at the Plant City Stadium. Mayor Randy Larson and WPSL CEO John Carroll made a joint announcement and spoke about the

potential for professional softball in Plant City. Also on the program for comments were Ed Turanchik, CEO Florida 2012; Liz Wilyoung, Executive Director, Tampa Sports Commission; Bill Ulbricht, COO, South Florida Baptist Hospital and Chairman of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce Sports Committee; and Mary Helen Keen, representing AT&T, WPSL National Sponsor. A joint City-Chamber team was organized consisting of Bill Ulbricht as Chairman; Richard “Cal” Calhoun, Plant City Director for Parks and Recreation, as Event Director; and Gil Gott, former Chamber President, as Event Coordinator. Planning for the game was now formally underway. The leadership team and numerous volunteers met regularly at the Chamber of Commerce. In late May another development occurred that was tangential to the softball project. The East Hillsborough Historical Society decided to apply for a major grant from the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources for repairs and improvements to the 1914 Plant City High School. The City agreed to give $1,000 to cover the costs of the application process. Some of the leading volunteers on the softball project joined the grant application effort and worked virtually non-stop for ten days to put together what turned out to be a successful grant application that resulted in $250,000 for repairs, an elevator, and air conditioning for the auditorium. The team was back on track by the first part of June and planning for the All-Star Game which was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at a somewhat converted Plant City Stadium. An operations manual was prepared and covered the following: Directors; Finance; Communications; Public Relations; Marketing; News Media; Game Programs; Game Day Operations; Concessions; Hospitality; Transportation; Accommodations; Special Events; Merchandise; Entertainment; Credentials; Signage; and Volunteer Coordination. Volunteers were excited to participate

and they numbered well over one hundred. A meeting of the volunteers, “committee of the whole”, was held Sunday, July 1, at the Plant City Campus of Hillsborough Community College, and a final walkthrough was held at the stadium Sunday, July 11, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. The hospitality group then traveled to the Tampa International Airport to meet and greet the players, coaches, families, and WPSL officials as they arrived. The visitors were then transported to the Radisson Hotel Sabal Park, the official hotel for the game. The “Stars” team included 15 players selected from the Akron Racers, Virginia Roadsters, and the Durham Dragons. The “Stripes” consisted of 15 players chosen from the Tampa Bay FireStix, Carolina Diamondbacks, and Georgia Pride. The coaches were Stars, Michael Castian, Akron Racers, and Stripes, Linda Derk, Tampa Bay FireStix. The game was to be taped by ESPN2 and was to air July 29. Everything was now set for the big game. The WPSL All-Star Game two-day events schedule included the following: Monday, July 12 (1) 12 Noon - First Pitch Luncheon at St. Clement Banquet Hall; (2) 4:30 p.m. - Media Challenge at the stadium – news media hit against WPSL ALL-Stars; (3) 4:30-5:30 p.m. - Autograph Session at the stadium; (4) 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. - Father-Daughter Softball Challenge at the stadium. Girls hit to fathers for points. Tuesday, July 13 (1) 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. - All-Star Game Youth Clinic at the stadium practice fields. Youths from 6 to 18 years of age (in four age groups) may participate; WPSL players will conduct the free clinic. (Bring your own gloves). Participants will receive a ticket for the All-Star Game, T-shirt, hot dog and soft drink; (2) 5:30 p.m. - Special VIP, News Media, and Sponsors Skybox Receptions; (3) 7:30 p.m. – WPSL 1999 All-Star Game at Plant City Stadium: Stars vs. Stripes (7 innings); (4) 9:30 p.m. – All-Star Reception for all participants to be held in the Clubhouse. As the crowd began arriving at the Plant City Stadium on that Tuesday evening, the skies darkened. The crowd kept coming. Girls in their softball uniforms got in free and they were everywhere along with their families. Parking attendants directed the cars into the parking spaces and volunteers took tickets and runners ushered the guests to their seats. The concession area quickly adjusted to the people gathering for

hot dogs, peanuts, and beverages. It was a great crowd. As the starting time approached the rains began even harder. Then it poured. The field crew had the field covered quickly but things did not look good. The volunteers now roamed the stands with towels to try to dry the seats, and umbrellas appeared throughout the stands. Very few people left. At 8:00 p.m. the game officials discussed the situation and decided to wait a little longer. The rain continued. Then the clouds began to show a little lessening and there was hope. Some of the game officials by now had decided to postpone and hope for better weather on the rain date – tomorrow. At 8:30 p.m. game officials discussed the situation and the condition of the field and then, after some thought, decided to go with the game. In less than 15 minutes the rains had finally moved out. The signal was given and the field crew rolled back the tarp and the crowd roared with delight. There was going to be a game tonight. All 4,223 fans turned their attention to the field of play. Tampa Bay FireStix all-star and popular standout pitcher DeeDee Weiman-Garcia took the mound for the Stripes and her fans cheered her on. The game was slow at first then the bats came alive. By the end of the 2nd inning the Stripes team was up 4 to 0. DeeDee Weiman-Garcia pitched four innings and gave up only three hits and one run. The Stars scored twice and went into the bottom of the 7th behind 4-2. They scored twice tying the game and forcing extra innings. The Stripes failed to score and in the bottom of the 8th, with Karen Jackson (Carolina Diamondbacks) on the mound, Virginia Roadsters catcher Scia Maumausolo liked the first pitch and belted it over the left field fence. Stars 5 Stripes 4, the 2nd annual WPSL All Star Game was over. It was late and the crowd moved out slowly at first then picked up the pace. It had been a long night and the spectators were still happily chatting about the exciting game they just witnessed and its dramatic finish. City officials, WPSL officials, news media, just about everyone was overjoyed with a great game, one of the largest crowds in WPSL history, and a well-organized special event for Plant City. “City scores with all-star game” read one headline, and an editorial read “Plant City shines during all-star game.” Softball had now come to Plant City.

LET OUR SUCCESS

Equal Your Success! By Wendy Brown

Lisa Spencer and the innovative team of professionals at Keller Williams are the obvious choice if you are looking to buy, sell, or invest in residential or commercial property? Focus Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with Lisa Spencer, broker of the Keller Williams Plant City office.

FOCUS: Please tell us how you became a realtor. Lisa Spencer: I decided to become a realtor when I was a child. My father had a real estate business and when I visited him at work, I loved to sit at the desks and pretend. I have been a realtor for over 20 years and a Broker since 2005. If you find something that you are good at, that you can be paid for, that people need, it creates great passion and a career worth having. I love what I do and I love igniting in others the same passion I have for this business.

Keller Williams services over 600 agents with the best training, technology and support buyer and sellers can find anywhere in the industry. Total Sales Volume of Real Estate Sold in Plant City

FOCUS: As our featured real estate company, what should we know about Keller Williams? Lisa: Keller Williams Realty is the largest real estate franchise that serves buyers and sellers worldwide with offices around the globe. It was founded by Gary Keller and Joe Williams in 1983 with a handful of agents in a small office furnished with folding tables and chairs. It’s “Bottom Up” business structure puts agents first and treats agents like business partners. This coupled with a high level of training and teamwork has allowed Keller Williams to grow and earn the reputation as a business with integrity. KW franchised in 1991, expanded to Canada in 1998, then expanded outside North American in 2011. In 2013, Keller Williams was named the largest real estate franchise by agent count in North America, and this provides an incredible referral network for our agents, buyers, and sellers. In May 2014, the number of associates topped 100,000. Yes! The KW brand is large, and the expertise our agent’s offer is beyond compare. They are smart, determined, and forward thinking. Our agents put their customers first! “As an education based, technology driven company, we’re committed to providing our associates and teams with the tools they need to secure the leads, listings, and leverage to grow their businesses,” CEO Mark Willis said. Agents are drawn to an environment that constantly invests in growth and development. Agents crave our models, systems, training, and technology. FOCUS: What’s so special about the Plant City Keller Williams Realty office? Lisa: Keller Williams Plant City is a sister office of our Keller Williams Brandon/Suburban Tampa office owned by Kevin Chadwick. Kevin had the vision to bring Keller Williams to Hillsborough County in early 2000 and has since grown the Keller Williams brand to nine offices across Tampa Bay. These offices service over six hundred agents with the best training, technology and support buyer and sellers can find anywhere in the industry. The Plant City Keller Williams agents live, work, raise their families, go to church, volunteer and make their lives in this community. The office has a very friendly, happy, and positive feeling which contributes to it’s success. Right now the agents are collecting school supplies for local schools, have volunteered at A Kid’s Place, and regularly volunteer at the Strawberry Festival. This December, our office will have our 3rd annual Christmas Party. All the agent’s customers and business partners are invited to a feast made by the agents. There will be lots of visiting, tasty food, and door prizes all just to say thank you to others at this special time of year. Every Keller Williams office has a training room. This supports our belief that continuing education is essential to the success of our agents. Our office builds relationships, builds successful partnerships in the community, and is known for integrity and professionalism. Real estate will always be a local business. Did you know that there

are as many as 30 other businesses that are supported by every real estate transaction? That is why analysts always measure the housing market to determine the strength of our economy. A healthy real estate market brings jobs and an infusion of revenue into the community. The Plant City Keller Williams office is a full service real estate company providing assistance to buyers and sellers in residential or commercial real estate. FOCUS: What makes a Keller William’s agent unique? Lisa: Keller Williams’ agents use a ten step marketing approach to produce results for sellers and have achieved the rank of the # 1 office in Plant City and Tampa Bay. Our company spends over 1.3 million dollars per month on technology. Our eEdge system gathers qualified buyers for our sellers, while at the same time delivering new listings to interested buyers at lighting speed. Keller Williams was just named “The #2 Training Organization Across all Industries” by Training Magazine. Daily training events assist our agents in utilizing technology and other resources to continually improve their skills. And none of this would be possible without a staff that supports the vision of being the best real estate company in the world. Wendy Brown, our Plant City Communications Director, is dedicated to supporting our agents and serving their consumers. Lisa Spencer, Team Leader and Broker, states, “The dedication and professionalism of our agents coupled with the support of an amazing staff makes coming to work every day a pleasure.” FOCUS: What’s the current status of the real estate market? Florida, Plant City, Hillsborough County. Lisa: In June 2014, 2441 sales occurred in the Greater Tampa Bay area. The average sale price was $208,000. This is up from the bottom of the market which occurred in January 2011 with an average sale price of $134,802. We have gone from over 13 months in inventory to just 4 months of inventory. The Multiple Listing Service (MLS) recorded 841 sales in Plant City in the period January thru June 2014. In 2011, the MLS recorded 605 sales in the same time period. That means the number of sales in Plant City is up 39% since its bottom. Real estate is hyper local and todays snapshot of a home’s value can change as world events and local supply and demand drive the market. The best way to know about the market is to speak with a Realtor®. I can say our office has listed and sold more property in Plant City than any other real estate company. I am confident that is due to our agents’ dedication to researching local trends and gathering data from multiple resources in order to best serve their customers.

FOCUS: What’s the most outstanding accomplishment of the Plant City Keller Williams office? Lisa: This office was launched just before the downturn in the real estate market. That adversity drew our agents closer instead of pulling them apart. As the market has improved, we have continued to work as a team living one of our company’s core beliefs that together everyone achieves more. FOCUS: What would you say to someone considering a career in real estate? Lisa: As they say, “You don’t get into real estate…real estate gets into you.” This is the toughest job you’ll ever love. Our agents are dedicated to the profession and the buyers and sellers they serve. Our value system of “God, Family, and Business” provides a stabilizing thread that has brought our agents through the tough times, and continues to keep them grounded as the market improves. If you are looking for a company that will give you the best training, technology, and support available in the industry, you owe it to yourself and your customers to explore the systems and tools that have made Keller Williams number #1. SECRET NEW HOME COMMUNITY AT PARK PLACE

WHEN IS A FLOOD INSURANCE QUOTE POINTLESS? BY NATE DAVIS

I

f you are thinking about buying a home and want to get a flood insurance quote, it’s pretty much pointless to do so if you don’t get an elevation certificate. Without it, an insurance agent will typically quote you with the highest premium for that given flood zone instead of a more accurate one. The certificate states the elevation of the bottom floor of the structure in relation to its “base flood elevation.” BFE is the elevation that is above areas that have a 1% chance of being under floodwater in a given year. Surveyors issue these certificates, which insurance agents then use to rate flood policies, among other things. Fully understanding this process is vital when trying to figure out the monthly costs associated with financing real estate. Often, some financial institutions will prequalify you for a certain loan amount without

having the actual insurance costs pinpointed. This can backfire against you, so be wary when looking to finance a home in a flood zone. My team never prequalifies someone for a certain loan amount, but rather how much they can afford a month — after all, that is the litmus test for what you can afford. Without an accurate flood insurance quote, you could find yourself trying to buy a house with a monthly payment beyond your budget. Since we fully understand the depth and gravity of what goes into getting an accurate flood insurance quote, we can get you on the right track to getting the accurate costs so you don’t waste any of your valuable time. This also ensures a smoother, faster loan process. Call my team at 813-707-6200 if you have any questions about this.

POWERFUL TIPS FOR SELLERS BY JO-ANN LUSK

1. PRICE YOUR HOME AGGRESSIVELY

Setting the right price for your home is the single most important decision you will make when you decide to sell. One simple but powerful technique for pricing your home aggressively is to spend the day looking at your competitors’ homes. By doing so you will be seeing the world through the buyers’ eyes. Be tough and honest with yourself.

BEST PRICE, BEST SERVICE FOR OVER 40 YEARS

2. HIRE AN AGGRESSIVE LISTING AGENT

Not all listing agents are created equal. To find an aggressive full time agent, take the time to research the market, talk to friends, neighbors, and colleagues about who they recommend, and interview multiple agents before making a hiring decision. In addition, be sure to come to an agreement about a specific, documented marketing plan before signing a long term listing agreement.

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

A buyer who has narrowed their search down to two or three top choices may need a little push to motivate them to take action. To encourage buyers, many sellers offer incentives like buying the interest rate down on the purchaser’s loan, paying for closing costs, inspections or repairs, or providing allowances or credits for home upgrades after closing. In addition, many sellers prepay for services like internet services for a year, taxes or homeowners association dues, or even golf club memberships.

4. STAGE THE HOME & USE CURB APPEAL

Buyers won’t pull the trigger unless they become emotionally invested in

your home. To help build a stronger first impression start from the outside first by working hard to improve your home’s curb appeal. Next move inside and stage each space by creating a focal point and a story for each room. A set dining table, a book by the bed, or a game in the kids room are all simple examples of staging.

5. USE A PRE-APPRAISAL AND PRE-INSPECTIONS

A pre-appraisal is an appraisal of the home before a buyer has made an offer. By having this done early you will have an objective voice that has provided a value for the property independent of your own opinion and may be a great tool in talking with buyers. In addition, many sellers do pre-inspections of the home to provide buyers with a clear whole home inspection or pest and dry rot inspection. (A word of caution: anything discovered during a pre-inspection will likely need to be disclosed whether you fix the issue or not).

6. LEARN TO FAIL FAST

If something isn’t working, successful sellers have the strength to fail fast by making adjustments to their strategy quickly. For instance, if after implementing your marketing plan buyers don’t begin to view your home on a regular basis, this is a clear indication (a red flag) that the market is rejecting your price. There is only one solution: lower your price. On the other hand, if you have steady stream of buyers touring your listing, yet you aren’t receiving any offers, this is often a symptom of buyers rejecting, not the price, but the home itself. Something about the home is turning them off. Savvy sellers attempt to identify the problem and take proactive action to correct it.

WALDEN LAKE REVIEW BY NATALIE SWEET

T

he Walden Lake Community Association Board Meetings are the third Monday of each month at the Walden Lake Community Association office building on Griffin Boulevard in Walden Lake. The next meetings are scheduled for July 21st and August 18th at 7:00 PM. The meetings are open to all Walden Lake residents. I would like to apologize for last month’s article. I submitted a past article in error and neither Focus nor I caught it before it went to print. The information on the golf course was old news and is no longer valid. I am often asked, “What is going on with the golf course rezoning application?” In regards to where the application stands, updates and answers can be found on the city’s website, www.PlantCityGov.com, where you will find a quick link on the home page. The HOA is having their free Back to School Pool Party for Walden Lake children in Grades Kindergarten through 5th at the YMCA from 6:008:00 PM. There will be food, swimming and goodie bags with school supplies for the children. Please RSVP to Bette Guarino at betteg@waldenlake.org if you plan to attend so there is enough for everyone. The HOA is busy updating neighborhood entrance signs and informational signage throughout the community as needed. The Board is also obtaining quotes for new security cameras at the Park and Guard Shacks. Board Director, Heather Updike and Bette Guarino are looking into a new website that will be easier to use for the residents. It’s that time of the year! Have you paid your 2nd half of your dues yet? dues low. For the type of community and the amenities we have, our dues are extremely low and the Board works diligently guarding our dollars! In the 2nd Quarter of 2014, there were 47 Walden Lake and Walden Lake East properties reported as sold with an average sale price of $176,089. The lowest sale price was $78,750 for a bank owned property in Walden Oaks with the highest sale price of $398,000 for a home on Sweet Bay Ct. In the 1st half of the year, there have been 73 sales with an average sale price of $184,072. There are currently 47 Active listings for sale with an average list price of $268,040. There are 22 properties under contract with an average list price of $196,427. The Walden Lake market remains strong for well-priced homes in good condition. It’s summer time and the children are outside playing. Be careful and please maintain a safe speed in the neighborhoods. Golf cart use is only for licensed individuals. Please don’t allow children to drive around the neighborhoods. It’s fun for you and them until an accident occurs. Have you heard about Walk with a Doc? This is a free walking program for anyone who is interested in taking strides to improve their health. The walk is held the last Saturday of each month and begins at the Oracle office at 1602 W Timberlane Drive at 9:00. They will perform free blood pressure checks and there are vendors with giveaways. There is usually a speaker and the walk is approximately 1.8 miles and goes from the Oracle office to the park and back. This is your chance to ask questions of the Doc. FREDDIE MULLIS PLUMBING, INC. BY JASON STONE

F

reddie Mullis knows his trade. You definitely learn a thing or two about work ethic and quality when you’ve been working in the same field for more than half your life (unless as a 10-year-old during the Industrial Revolution you already had six-and-a-half years of factory experience under your belt). No wonder his company is so successful. Born and raised in Plant City, Mullis started his business the day after Easter in 1984. “I treat people the way I want to be treated,” said Mr. Mullis. “I like to go the extra mile in my work, but I’m not going

72

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

to do something that’s not necessary. I see that a lot in my business [doing unnecessary work], especially if there’s insurance involved.” Mr. Mullis puts a great emphasis on customer appreciation and respect. “If someone comes to my house and does something for me, I expect them to treat me well. I think that it pays off in the end to be honest, reputable, and the kind of person that you want in your house.” Freddie Mullis works on any appliance that has water flowing to it including water heaters, faucets of all types, sinks, and toilets. Technicians

also repair dripping faucets and replace broken water lines under concrete floors or sewer lines to the street or to septic tanks, etc. In addition, the company works in new installation fixtures of all kinds (sinks, bath tubs, toilets, showers, shower valves, and more). “If it has water going to it,” said Mr. Mullis, “we’ll work on it!” Freddie Mullis knows that availability is what customers appreciate in a plumbing company. “The plumbing business has been good to me. You work when you want to, and you work when you don’t want to - it’s part of the business. If people call, you gotta go. I don’t technically have 24-hour service, but if they call, I go. “If a restaurant calls at 9:30 or 10:00 at night with a stopped-up drain, I know that the restaurant staff has to come back to work at 6 a.m. they’ll have people in there working

and they can’t have a stopped up drain. You put clothes on and you go and take care of it. I always have taken care of my customers. I know that if you take care of them, they will remember you.” Freddie Mullis Plumbing, Inc. is comparable to other plumbing companies in terms of price and fairness. “I try to treat everyone the same, no matter what their financial status is.”

JAKE DUBE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

BY DEANA GARRISON

I

f you have never gotten the opportunity to meet Jake Dube, you are missing out. This young man not only has the skills needed to compete in basketball, he has the compassionate drive to help others and be that dependable crutch some people need in order for them to succeed. This humble and skilled athlete has played basketball for many years contributing only positive experiences with every team that has had the privilege of having him. From making All Stars and being on travel teams to being on the on the Plant City High School Basketball Team, Jake Dube has impressed many. All of

74

that involvement proves he is a very skillful player and plays with positive sportsmanship that our young players need as a role model. But Dube is so much more than that. His compassion for the Special Olympics and wanting to be a huge part of it shows his care and concern for others. Jake has been a member of the Plant City High School Raiders Unified Basketball team helping students in the special education department develop their basketball skills while reaching an ultimate goal…The USA Special Olympics Gold Medal. Being a part of reaching that goal for those students made

an extreme impact on Dube. When asked about being a member of the Unified Basketball team, Dube responded, “Special Olympics have become a huge part of my life. It has given me the opportunity to help my athletes play the sports that I was able to do regularly throughout my life. Unified sports help people with intellectual disabilities feel like they are part of an actual team and it gives them a feeling of equality. That is why I do Special Olympics.” His care and sportsmanship didn’t begin when he started playing for the Unified Team. Dube has always been known to assist his other teammates

on the court even if it meant not taking that open shot. He has never been selfish on the court and always ready to give that play up to someone else. His thoughtfulness and caring for others has always be quite evident. When he makes great plays you will never see him boast or brag. This humble young man is outstanding not only on the court but in his studies as well. Now, headed to UF to concentrate on his future, we only wish him the very best. Congratulations Jake Dube on being FOCUS Magazine’s Athlete of the month.

PLANT CITY HIGH SCHOOL RAIDERS UNIFIED BASKETBALL TEAM WINS GOLD AT SPECIAL OLYMPICS BY DEANA GARRISON

P

lant City should be extremely proud of the Plant City High School Raiders Unified Basketball Team. Why? They just recently brought back the Gold Medal for Unified Basketball at the National Special Olympics held in New Jersey. The team consists of 8 members, four are unified partners and the other four are the Special Olympic athletes. The unified partners are Jacob Goad, Jake Dube, Jacari Stevenson, and David O’Callaghan. The Special Olympic Athletes are Justin Bulgreen, Maurice Eston, Nathan Jones, and Javaras Stevenson. While on the court, three players have to be Special Olympic Athletes while two players

76

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

are the unified partners. These boys showed just how a unified team is supposed to play. It was amazing to other bystanders and coaches to witness how well this group played together working as one. As a matter of fact that is all many of them could talk about while they competed. Sandy Denham, special education teacher at Plant City High School and coach of the Raiders Unified Team has coached with Special Olympic teams for 32 years and this was the first time her team was chosen to compete for the National competition. To qualify for the drawing to compete in Nationals, you have to win the State competition which this team

has done four out of the last five years. This year, after qualifying once again, they were finally selected to compete in Nationals. Not only were they representing Plant City Raiders, they were now representing Florida as they are called Team Florida in the National Competition. “It was amazing to watch them and to see them do so well and play so hard on a team in unified sport. Most of these boys have been together for five years,” says Denham. These boys work hard all year and it certainly paid off. They practice every weekend to improve their skills. To venture on this trip was costly. However, the community pulled

together to help. They had lots of fund raisers. Many companies and our very own Chamber of Commerce showed lots of support in getting these young men the funds they needed to be on their way. Employees of the Finish Line shoe store found out about their journey and decided to have a quick collection. They collected $500 to help in purchasing shoes for the team to complete their look. It amazes me how people jump in to help for such a great cause. These athletes truly enjoyed their experience and proved to many that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. It may have taken several years to get to this point, but these boys saw a goal and worked very hard to reach it. Congratulations Plant City Raiders Unified Basketball Team for a Job well done. You make us proud!

E

LEADERS IN FAITH: PASTOR TIM ANASTASIA BY DEREK MAUL

J

une 30, Father Tom Anastasia completed a seven-year tenure as pastor at Plant City’s St. Clement Catholic Church. These “10 Questions” serve as a kind of exit interview from a church - and a town - that he grew to love. His first day at St Matthew’s, Largo, was July 1.

1

What’s your take on moving? Are you ready to leave Plant City? There are pros and cons, but it’s the life of a priest. We’re ordained to serve the church, and that’s bigger than any one parish. You become the father to a family, then you’re asked to father another family. It can be a challenge.

2

Will you miss Plant City? Very much. Interestingly it’s my second time around. I was here the summer of 1988 as young seminarian. I fell in love with the place in ten weeks. I may be saying goodbye as a pastor but I’m still leaving a part of my heart here. I’m optimistic, this is a young church and it’s growing. We’re expanding our school and the future looks bright.

3

Have you seen any growth? Certainly. St Clement is about 3,000 families, around 1,700 registered. Many are Hispanic and they’re not accustomed to registering; we don’t demand it unless they are seeking sacraments. We have six masses in the winter - three English and three Spanish.

78

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

4

What’s your take on the recent Popes? I liken the past three as embodying faith, hope, and love. Benedict was the scholar – he clearly represented faith. John-Paul II was all about hope, tearing down walls, bringing a new era. With Francis it’s charity – living out our Christian faith in the person of Jesus, and demonstrating that love and concern for the least.

5

What have you enjoyed the most here? First, just being able to try to bridge the cultural divide. My proficiency isn’t in language, and the people know that, but there’s a connection they respect. They see their pastor struggling to learn and there’s a tremendous amount of humility among the people.

6

Is the parish culturally united? The English speakers are supportive, but they’re petrified they’ll lose control – so they’re pleased to have a so-called “gringo” pastor. My successor – Mike O’Brien – is also nervous about not knowing Spanish well. But it should work for this community.

7

What makes St. Clement unique? We’re the only church in the world built on a foundation of strawberry shortcake! Seriously, we do bring in a lot of funds from the shortcake sales at the festival.

8

What lessons will you take to your new parish? One thing I’ve done here is to make mistakes, and learn from those mistakes, guided by the Holy Spirit. Pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus said, “You can’t step into the same river twice.” The only constant is change; everything is in flux.

9

What are you reading? “Rebuilt: Awakening the Faithful, Reaching the Lost, and

Making Church Matter”, by White and Corcoran, along with my staff and parish council.

10

What does a priest do for fun? I’m a huge Rays fan, and I’m the chaplain right now with Catholic Athletes for Christ. I’ve been to every ball park in the country with exception of the new ones in New York and Minnesota.

CANDY’S CORNER BY CANDY OWENS

I

t’s summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime, summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime, summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime. Summerti-i-me. When I was a little girl back in the 1960’s and we flipped our family calendar to the month of July, you could bet your “sweet bippy” that my sister and I were enjoying every moment of our summer vacation. We had played games, ridden our bicycles, flown our kites, had our end-of-the-year dance recitals, music recitals, girl scout ceremonies, and had swam a million laps at the Plant City Swim Club. We had gone to weddings and baby showers, we had sold lemonaide, we had slumber parties, attended birthday parties, been to our family reunions, and we had watched re-runs of all our favorite TV shows. We had even had our yearly checkups at our dentist and pediatrician, and it was time to go on vacation . . . our family vacation that was. The first thing that my father would do to get ready was to take our 1966 Chevy Impala to Uncle Kenneth

80

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

Bryant’s (better known as “Uncle Ducey”) Gulf station for a fillup and complete check-up before we got on the road. “Uncle Ducey’s” Station sat on the corner of Baker and Collins Streets. (which is now the home of First Baptist Church preschool) My sister and I always loved to go with our father to Uncle Duceys. We loved the sound of the “ding-ding” as we drove over the hose that signaled to the attendants that a customer was present. I remember there was a man named “Satch” that would come right out and lean in our car window and ask us how many gallons and did you want regular or supreme? (there was no un-leaded gasoline back in those days). While “Satch” was filling our tank with gas, he would lift the hood of the car and check the oil, the water, the belts and every other thing that needed checking. He would also wash our front and back windshields and would take a small wisk broom and sweep our floor mats. He would come back to my father’s window and ask if there was anything else. I can even remember how “Satch” wore a little coin dispenser on his belt, to make change. Now that my friends . . . was service with a smile! If my father needed to have the oil changed, then my sister and I would get an ice cold bottle of Coca-Cola, Sprite, Frosty Rootbeer, R.C. Cola, or an orange or grape drink. We would also get to choose a snack out of the glass Lance snack jars that “Uncle Ducey” had inside the station. We would usually pick a bag of peanuts or the orange peanut butter crackers.

My father would always get the Lance peanut bar. My sister and I would beg our father to let us sit inside the car when it went up on the lift. My father would usually let us but not without looking sternly at me first and saying: “Do not turn the wheels, pump the peddles, or honk the horn and do not whatever- you- do, open the car door!” Once inside, my sister and I were up, up, and away! We would roll down our car windows and wave and say: “Hey Daddy” a million times. We thought we were somebody! When my sister and I got a little older we would sit on the little cement wall that ran parallel to the gas station on Collins Street and chew sour apple bubble gum while we watched the Time and Temperature sign from the First Federal Savings and Loan Bank, turn round and round. (Talk about entertainment while you wait! Haha) When our car was all ready for travel, we would head home and pack our suitcases and hit the road. One special vacation that I remember fondly was that of the summer of 1967. Our family went to Clearwater beach for our yearly stay at the Aegean Sands Motel, which was a 52 unit resort motel overlooking Clearwater’s white sand beach at 42 Gulfview Boulevard. At that time Clearwater beach and most of Gulf Boulevard had new motels spaced between small mom and pop cottages and little wood-framed houses that had been turned into giftshops and restaurants. There were two restaurants on the beach that my mother always insisted that we have dinner; Fisherman’s Warf and The Pelican. On this particular vacation, my parents had a special surprise in store for my sister and I. They took us to Trader Frank’s Tiki Gardens on Indian Rocks Beach. Tiki Gardens was a south seas Polynesian theme park built in 1962 on 12 acres. When you first walked in the main entrance you were standing in

the Great Hall that had a huge Tiki waterfall statue that emptied into a beautiful Koi fish pond. The sound of the Polynesian theme song was piped through speakers and my sister and I squealed with excitement because we felt like we were in Hawaii. There was so much to see and do. There was: Trader Frank’s restaurant, the Signal House giftshops and south seas themed gardens complete with exotic birds and monkeys. Our parents took us into the giftshop and surprised us with grass skirts, flower leis and anklets, shell necklaces and rings, Hawaiian dolls and fake birds on a perch. We were so excited that we put on our Hawaiian regalia and wore it in Trader Frank’s restaurant. After dinner our parents took us out in the gardens to watch a torch lighting ceremony, where girls and guys, dressed in native costume, danced and presented flowers to the statue of Kahona, the Supreme God of Tiki Gardens. After the ceremony, we strolled through the tiki torch lighted gardens, to the sound of piped in Polynesian music. How much happiness could a five and seven year old girl take? My sister and I hulla-danced all the way back to the car. I remember that my sister and I waved good-bye to Tiki Gardens as we drove away in the car. We kept our grass skirts, flower leis, and dolls for many years after that. It is now 45 plus years since that very special trip. “Uncle Ducey’s” Gulf station was torn down and is now the home of First Baptist preschool and Tiki Gardens is now a paved parking lot for beach goers at Indian Rocks. Those two special places are gone now, but not forgotten. Every time I bite into a Lance peanut butter cracker I stop and think of “Uncle Ducey’s” gas station and every once-in-a-while I will see a little girl twirling around in a grass skirt and I smile and think about how hard my parents worked to make two little girls so happy. Aloha!

WANDA’S

WORDS OF WISDOM BY WANDA “LEWIS” ANDERSON

I

hope all of you had a safe and happy 4th of July. We had our annual “Lewis Family Reunion” and I must say it just gets better

every year. I came across a handy tip the other day while attempting to thread a needle. If you spray the end of your thread with hair spray it makes it much easier to thread the needle. Are you tired of scrubbing the bathroom shower? After you clean the shower apply clear wax, not green turtle wax. This keeps the dirt and grime from sticking. While you’re in the bathroom add 4 Alka-Seltzer tablets to your toilet bowl. Leave it for an hour then brush; the toilet bowl will be sparkling clean. I am truly blessed to have many dear friends and from time to time they share their favorite tips with me. Jeffrey Ann gave me a great one for whitening your teeth. Rub white distilled vinegar on your teeth with your finger. Damp your tooth brush

with a little water then dip in baking soda. Brush quickly for about a minute and rinse, try this once a week and you’ll notice a big difference. Patti and Laurie swear by dabbing a little apple cider vinegar on your face daily it helps diminish the appearance of wrinkles. I am all about less wrinkles. Do you feel tired in the afternoons? Try a glass of warm water and honey for a quick pick me up. It will give you energy and make you feel refreshed. If you have a problem with dandruff, try lemon juice, olive oil or coconut oil on your scalp. The lemon juice kills the bacteria causing dandruff. I don’t know about you but, it’s been hard for me to find a good garage to work on my car. I had to go out of state recently and stopped in at “Super Service” to have my vehicle checked out for the trip. I was really impressed by their friendly and professional service. Check them out and tell Vincent that Wanda sent you. Until next time relax, enjoy and be thankful…

E BELIEF MULTIPLIED BY LOVE: PUTTING PASSION TO WORK

BY DEREK MAUL

“W

hat do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” (Mark 9:23) Generally, I don’t quote many other people when I write – especially in my books. Essentially, I prefer original thinking; plus the whole business of permissions and citations can be tedious at best. Sorting through my records, here’s a list of sources I do reference: The Bible; the great Confessions; hymns; significant historical documents; authors such as C.S. Lewis, Henri Nouwen, Augustine, Don Miller, and Philip Yancey; my wife Rebekah’s sermons. Then there’s the stuff I avoid like the plague: This list includes talk radio, politicians, professional athletes, television personalities, pop musicians, and movie stars. Until today. Today I’m quoting comedian Jim Carrey. FOLLOW YOUR PASSION: Carrey, one of my favorite movie funny guys (The Mask; The Truman Show; Liar, Liar; Bruce Almighty), spoke at a recent University commencement. He told the story of how his father chose not to chase his dream of being a professional comedian. Instead, fearful of failure, Carrey’s dad pursued a different, more pedestrian, career; not because he wanted to, but because it was a “safe” route for his family. However, when Jim Carrey was 12 years old, his dad lost that “secure” job and the family struggled anyway - the safe route turned out to be no guarantee. “I learned that you can fail at what you don’t want to do,” Carrey told the graduates; “so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

JULY 2014 focusplantcity.com

GOLF Jim Carrey’s story reminds me of a recent golf outing and a classic “riskreward” par five. The setup called for either challenging the water, cutting the corner, and possibly reaching the green in two, or hitting a couple of safe iron shots into the wide fairway then pitching up to the green in regulation. Typically, I tend to emulate progolfer Phil Mickelson; I go for broke, have fun, and enjoy taking the risk. But that day I’d been playing well, so I decided to dial back to caution in order to protect my score. I pulled out my reliable six-iron, lined up with the safe, wide part of the fairway, pulled back the club head, swung carefully, concentrated deliberately, and proceeded to chunk my shot directly into the water. It’s just as easy to fail at something we don’t want to do as it is to fail at something we’re excited about. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that it’s possibly easier to fail at something we don’t want to be doing, exactly because we have neither the passion nor the excitement to give it our very best. BELIEF: It turns out that believing is every bit as important as having the requisite skill. It was certainly that way when I was a school teacher, sometimes making it through a long day with extremely challenging children simply because I loved them, loved my work, and stepped forward with confidence. Not just “making it,” but “thriving,” because it’s passion that turns out to be the “X-factor;” not luck, not even skill; but belief multiplied by love. “Belief multiplied by love.” I like that. It’s certainly the story of my life as a disciple.

VERSATILITY IS THE KEY

TO LOCAL ARTIST’S SUCCESS BY HEATHER DAVIS

F

or the past thirty five years Paul Hetrick has been known as the “Sign Guy” by many in Plant City. Paul’s hand painted lettered signs have given pizazz and recognition to many businesses in our area. Most recently Paul gave his personal touch and flair to signs that he created for the Grimes Center at the Strawberry Festival Fair Grounds as well as for the Train Depot in Downtown Plant City. One can truly say that Paul’s signs are a work of art. With progress comes change and just as with many art forms hand painted signs are becoming a lost art. Instead of focusing on the declining need for hand painted signs Paul took his creativity and passion for working with paint and his hands to begin another exciting venture. Paul began to create custom and one of a kind furniture from furniture either given to him or found at garage sales. As a result the name Florida Brites was given life. Just as with his signs, Paul gives immaculate attention to detail to his hand painted furniture. Each piece of furniture is repaired if needed, sanded, primed, and then finished with a unique custom finish or design. No two pieces of furniture are the same. At this time Paul presently has his furniture in Cameos in Plant City, Orchid Envy in Venus, and in a boutique in Boone, North Carolina. You can also find his furniture for purchase on Paul’s website, paulshandlettering.com.

Interestingly enough one of Paul’s custom furniture pieces was purchased by Tabitha King, the wife of Stephen King. In addition to creating signs and hand painted furniture, Paul is very adept as doing hand painted murals such as the one located on the exterior wall at the Whistle Stop. Although Paul is not willing to recreate the wheel so to speak and give up creating hand painted signs all together to follow the times, he is extremely versatile. It is this versatility and ability to create beautiful pieces of art that will enable him to thrive in these changing times and stay true to his passion.

Stepping through the door, you can immediately smell the sweet aroma of a barbecue lover’s heaven. From the slabs of ribs cooked on an open pit grill for three to four hours, to the tender stacks of chicken, sausage, pork, beef, corn beef brisket and turkey slowly cooking to perfection for up to 12 hours, this restaurant is one you don’t want to skip. include baked beans, potato salad, greens, french fries, cole slaw and macaroni salad. Plus, their homemade barbecue sauce recipe has been passed down through family generations. The prices are affordable for any budget. With a nice family atmosphere, you can bring your entire family out for a great time. When FOCUS visited this fine restaurant, it was evident the friendly service and good food were high above the rest. Servers brought ribs, pulled pork, sausage, potato salad, cole slaw and sweet tea to the table. The ribs are definitely a must try. The pulled pork was cooked to perfection, and the

sausage was just the way FOCUS likes it. The proof was in the empty plates. The side choices of potato salad and cole slaw gave our meal that complete taste. There are many places that sell cole slaw, but this place has the best. And if you’re in the mood for just a sandwich, they have selections of beef, pork, corn beef, turkey breast, sausage, and rib sandwiches. Plant City is not the only lucky town home to this restaurant. Brandon also has a First Choice Southern Bar-B-Que for all to enjoy located at 10113 Adamo Drive (SR 60), and they too follow the same friendly service and great food motto

THE PERFECT JEWISH COFFEE CAKE RECIPE BY SAVANNAH RAYE JONES

M

y ability to comfort and care for people when they are ill or injured is pretty much limited to providing them with food. So when one of my best friends had to have surgery on her knee recently, I expected to bring her soup or a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies. She called me a few days after her surgery to invite me over and keep her company for the day. I didn’t have time to make a “get-well” food dish, so I regrettably went empty-handed. When I got to her house, expecting to lounge around and watch movies all day, she looked at me and said she’d been doing that for the past 48 hours straight and would rather do almost anything else. To me, the solution was simple; let’s cook something! We set to work looking through her collection of cookbooks before coming across her Jewish grandmother’s beloved cookbook. “My grandmother made coffee cake from that book all of the time!” my friend explained. That was too good to pass up, so we began recreating the “Bubbe’s” signature cake, and soon found that it was the simplest, quickest, and tastiest cake recipe either of us had ever come across. This will be my go-to dessert from now on.
