LETTER FROM THE

PUBLISHER July is smack-dab in the middle of vacation season, for sure, with many families wrapping their weeks off around the Independence Day holiday. I always appreciate hearing local friends share those getaway memories— from trips to exotic destinations, theme parks and relatives’ homes to cruises, daytrips, and “staycations.” It’s fun to break from the routine of everyday life, and make those memories that children will never forget. In your shared photos, the smiles say it all. Our staff has been busy this month with the annual Focus Makeover winners, women who are excited to showcase their fun in the pampering, shopping and dining. They and we appreciate the generosity of local shop owners who contribute goods and services each year to make those Makeover hours so special. And thanks also to

the many readers who submitted nominations. We could definitely feel the love in those letters this year. Summer is an especially busy time for realtors, as well. Most families schedule residential moves to avoid disrupting their children’s school year. With the market rebounding, Plant City’s top firms and agents make every effort to see those new home dreams come true. Don’t miss this issue’s updates on our area’s realty conditions…it’s all good! Among other stories you’ll enjoy, discover coverage of the Elvis Festival, Plant City Crossfit, A Land of Delight Farmers’ Market, Plant City’s Fourth of July Celebrations and how Felton’s Meat & Produce make your summertime meals more convenient. Thanks as always for your support…for our magazine, our great community, and for our incredible country. Securing and celebrating the freedoms we enjoy is a joint effort and you, the people of Plant City, are definitely doing your part. And in a mid-summer salute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, let’s all “carry on and finish strong!” America deserves our best.

Leo Clown Troupe Plant City Lions Club Chairman David Vick (L), along with Lions Club District 35-I Governor Judith Galm (R) and Plant City Lions Club President Tony Lee present Daisy Alvarez with a $1,000 scholarship check for her recognition as Leo of the Year Award winner.

DAISY ALVAREZ

NAMED LEO OF THE YEAR FOR STATE OF FLORIDA BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

D

urant High School graduate Daisy Alvarez received recognition and a $1,000 check at the Plant City Lions Club meeting on June 9 for being named “Leo of the Year” for the entire State of Florida. The daughter of Jose and Lydia Alvarez also became the first Leo Club member “pinned” under Durant’s recently approved state charter for the Lions Club International organization. Lions Club District Governor Judith Galm was present also to recognize Daisy’s accomplishments. The Leo Club has functioned at DHS for the last four years but just received its official charter this month. David Vick, Chairman of the Leo Clown Troupe Plant City Lions Club, nominated Alvarez for the award. His 18

letter of recommendation and written responses to questions in the application process are filled with high praise for the 19-year-old who consistently sacrifices self for others. “Rarely do you come across a young person so attentive to the minutest of details,” Vick wrote. “She never hesitates in taking on any challenge or district projects in the field of health care, children, differently abled, education, and self-development.” In addition to specific examples of leadership, Vick spoke of her humility. “Daisy’s skills and achievements are not limited to Leo involvement. Her understated demeanor would make her contributions individually and collectively easy to bypass.” He explained, “She has amassed over 500 community service

hours, in addition to carrying a full load of AP and Honors classes, church work, and working 20 OJT (on-the-job training) hours weekly in the schoolsponsored HOST program with afterschool childcare at Trapnell Elementary School.” Daisy served the Leo Club in many ways, but perhaps most visibly as Clown Boss for the DHS Leo Club Clown Troupe. Vick shared, “Daisy deserves credit for recruiting new troupe members, now numbering 50-plus. She used social media, texting and face-to-face contact to share upcoming events and made posters to recruit new members. “ The troupe makes hospital visits to children, serves annually at Plant City’s Pig Jam, Florida Strawberry Festival Queen’s Scholarship Pageant, Youth Parade, Grand Parade, and Christmas Parade, Walmar’s annual Health Fair, and works in the Lions Club food booth at the Strawberry Festival. Students also collect used eyeglasses at 20+ sites monthly for the Lion’s “Right to Sight” project. “Three local fundraising efforts can also be directly linked to Daisy and her

philanthropic spirit,” Vick said. “Taylor’s Fight generated over $7,000 for the family whose daughter was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. Daisy, who deals herself with Juvenile Arthritis, organized car washes to donate toward treatment at Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute for young Gabriel, who lost one of his eyes at age three to eye cancer. And she also helped raise $700 for a family in need from the Super Sandy Storm. Alvarez hopes to enter college next Spring but first she needs a second job. “In my family, we all have to earn our way,” said the 19-year-old who also assists with expenses for her two younger brothers. “I need a car, so I can drive myself to and from school. Hopefully, I can begin classes next year.” Vick closed his remarks by saying, “Daisy epitomizes all the great virtues of responsible young people in our community and beyond…without question she serves to strengthen the “Pride” with her leadership skills! Lucky will be the Lions Club that welcomes Daisy into their ranks as a Lions Club International member.”

HOW PLANT CITY CELEBRATED INDEPENDENCE DAY BY ANDREA BARRIOS

F

ourth of July is one of the most beloved American holidays. It’s a time to enjoy family, food and all the simple joys that make up summer. Barbeque, roasted marshmallows and other delights fill the minds of Americans everywhere. Patriotic colors are proudly donned by nearly everyone. On America’s 239th Independence Day, citizens all over Plant City and the surrounding areas gathered together to enjoy possibly the most classic holiday tradition: fireworks. Some purchased fireworks and put on their own show at home. Others chose to enjoy their 20

JULY 2015 focusplantcity.com

neighbor’s celebrations and relaxed with hotdog in hand, while they gazed on the skies. And others attended one of the various fireworks celebrations in the area. Channelside Tampa fireworks began at 9 p.m. and included live entertainment as well as food and beverages. Busch Gardens also provided huge and colorful fireworks on July 2-4 where Kinetix blared energizing music in the Gwazi field. Westfield Brandon mall also put on their annual free fireworks display in the Restaurant Courtyard. But perhaps the most exhilarating of all was the celebration right in the heart of Plant

City. The Plant City Stadium held a free, family-friendly celebration beginning at 6 p.m. Face painting, corn hole, balloon art, inflatables and bungee jumping kept families entertained, and concession stands and food vendors dotted the grass of the stadium. The Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Strawberry Festival, Stingray Chevrolet, GFS Marketplace and the City of Plant City served as sponsors. Perfect for residents of all ages, this alcohol free event united the citizens of Plant City in commemoration of the nation that

brought them together. Stage entertainment by Double Barrel Band livened up attendees throughout the evening. Finally at 9 p.m., after the Military Salute and National Anthem, the highlight of the night lit up the sky. A spectacular show by Zambelli Fireworks put the city in awe. So no matter how the citizens of Plant City celebrated their holiday, we can be sure that this one tradition enabled them to come together and enjoy a classic summer evening. L daughter, Aubrey, went on to compete in the USA Gymnastics Championships held in Greensboro, North Carolina and took second place in tumbling and second place on the trampoline competition. She did it in honor of her dad. His heart reached out to everyone. If a child needed help selling their candy for the sports team they were on, Hancock would put them out on his counter and get them sold right away. He coached in the little league community and was a participant in the Chamber of Commerce. Hancock also guided many people who wanted to be a barber as well. In fact, he was guiding my own son in the right program he needs to get his career started

REMEMBERING WESTLEY HANCOCK

A MAN WITH A POSITIVE INFLUENCE FOR MANY IN THE COMMUNITY. BY DEANA GARRISON

W

estley Hancock had the personality that shined above the rest. He always had a smile on his face and was ready to listen to anyone. His days were filled with stories and laughter while working at Bruce’s Barber shop, which he owned for 12 years. Many people walked into that barbershop specifically to see him. His smile and mannerism drew you in and within minutes, if you were having a rough day, you suddenly forgot because Hancock either had you laughing or wondering about something that was on his mind. No matter what, it was always positive. If a negative topic came up, it was Hancock that would find a way to seek some type of positive outlook on it. He would steadily cut hair, pause for a moment to understand what you were 22

JULY 2015 focusplantcity.com

saying and without missing a beat keep his conversation and perfect hair cutting techniques all at the same time. If you forgot the “number” you always get for your hairstyle, you didn’t have to worry, he always knew…and could probably tell you when you switched it from another style and why. That is why people loved him so much…he was personable and had so much happiness inside himself that it beamed out to everyone he met. His family was his heartthrob. You could immediately come to that conclusion by simply looking on his mirror in the shop. Pictures displayed a happy man full of love for his family. He would always include a story or two of his wife or children before your visit ended. He would be so proud right now, as a week after his death, his youngest

and told him of the steps he needs to take to own his own shop. He went so far as to order his supplies for him to make it cheaper to build up the items he will need. That is the best part of Westley Hancock…he never wanted to let anyone down. He was always there with a friendly smile and a helpful attitude. The Plant City community lost this great man on June 16th and he will be missed. He had a positive influence on many. We really need to learn from his life. It was no secret that he was a happy man. He displayed it daily. Westley Hancock…WE ALREADY MISS YOU!!

STARTING SEEDS TO GROW COMMUNITY A LAND OF DELIGHT FARMERS MARKET

BY KELINA NELSON

N

estled at the end of Leaning Pine Lane in Plant City, is a farm that offers endless opportunities. A Land of Delight Natural Farm was started by Eric and Jennifer Gonyon who simply wanted to reconnect their kids to the land. To teach them where their food comes from and all of the wonderful benefits from living a much more sustainably conscious life. They set out planting fruit trees, starting bee houses, erecting green houses, laying rows in the garden, raising chickens and establishing an aquaponics system that is said to hold more than 200 Tilapia. I was stunned to learn that it’s only a year in it’s maturity. What blossomed from that simple endeavor is nothing short of inspiring. The more they did, the more they talked to their friends and fellow church goers, the more interest grew from others. Which sparked the idea of a Market for the community to not only visit and purchase items from but they also encourage volunteers to come out and learn the processes that go into making a self-sustained farm.

24

JULY 2015 focusplantcity.com

Eric Gonyon is certified in Aquaponics, which is the process of combining aquaculture and hydroponics. They even offer systems for purchase and will advise you on the ins and outs of starting your own. When I arrived I was happily greeted by a volunteer who showed me around and talked to me about just what makes this place so special. He described the Gonyons as authentic people committed to stewardship and later I spoke to Eric Gonyon via phone call and I was immediately drawn in by the liveliness of which he spoke. These people love what they are doing. There’s no doubt about it. It is seen in the vibrancy of all that is growing. The enthusiasm of the volunteers. Even in the blistering Florida heat when the bugs are at their worst, the farm has something growing and so much to offer.. I encourage everyone to pay them a visit. They are located at 2514 Leaning Pine Lane. The market is open every other Saturday from 8-4. For more information on all they have to offer please visit: alandofdelight.com

PLANT CITY CREATIVES MOVES FORWARD

WITH BRINGING ART FESTIVAL TO DOWNTOWN PLANT CITY BY HEATHER DAVIS

ittle over a few months ago a group of local business entrepreneurs and local artists gathered together at the Corner Store to discuss the possibilities of creating a larger presence when it comes to showcasing art in our community. The first meeting, led by local business woman

and entrepreneur, Yvonne Frye, was a huge success with over thirty people in attendance. Since that first meeting much progress has been made, along with the solid decision to plan and bring forth a full-scale Art Festival the likes Plant City

has not experienced before. David Gnage, co-owner of the Plant City Mercantile is spearheading this movement along with the Plant City Creatives to create a presence of art as well as to utilize downtown as an art showcase. Gnage who is from St Petersburg is using as

a model the Mainsail Art Festival to guide and direct the direction the Plant City Creatives plan to take with the Art Festival. The Plant City Creatives have received backing, support and encouragement from The City of Plant City and City Manager Mike Herr along with The Plant City Chamber to move ahead with their endeavors. When all goes as planned the first Art Festival in downtown Plant City will take place in Spring of 2016. “We are looking to shake it up and do something a bit different then what has been done before.” Gnage stated. The Art Festival will be an indoor/outdoor event. Both local and national artists will be invited to participate and the event will also include local food, beer and wine, music, and special events for kids and families. Gnage is searching for artists on ZAPP, a website that allows for artists of all forms of media to apply to art shows in one central location and as a result they hope to gather around 200 artists. The goal of the Art Festival is not for the Plant City Creatives to make a profit, but just to cover their costs as well as shine a spotlight on Plant City. A FLUTE CIRCLE IN PLANT CITY HONORS NATIVE WINDS

BY KELINA NELSON

I

f you find yourself at Bruton Memorial Library located at 302 McLendon Street in Plant City, on the first Thursday of the month, chances are you’re likely to catch the sound of the monthly Native American-style flute circle that takes place. Organized by Utah Farris and Dock Green Silverhawk and made up of a collection of flutists from all over Central Florida, they gather at the library to not only play music together but to offer the opportunity for anyone to come and hang out a bit, and maybe even fall in love with this style of flute music. Anywhere from 10 to 40 people will show up with hand carved flute in hand. With an interest in wanting to get more people involved, they even offer flutes for loan as well as additional help during the meet-up. Utah Farris and Dock Green Silverhawk first met at a Fort Walton flute gathering in 2000 and have been friends ever since. Farris picked up flute playing not too long before meeting Dock Green and around the same time, he taught himself how to make Native

28

JULY 2015 focusplantcity.com

American-style flutes. He says that now they really enjoy sitting back and observing. The up and comers are doing new and inventive things these days with technology providing it’s own usefulness in the music making process. I When talking to Farris, I could hear the energetic enthusiasm he feels about what he’s a part of. It’s the kind of enthusiasm that’s infectious. I immediately wanted to learn more. Farris put out an album of his flute music in 2005. A member of the Central Florida Flute Circle, he sells his hand carved flutes at the Native American festivals he attends throughout the year. The most notable being The Silverhawk Native American Gathering at Withlacoochi State Park in Dade City, organized by long time friend Dock Green Silverhawk. For more information on the monthly flute circle contact Bruton Memorial Library. Bruton Memorial Library Director Tonda Morris is thrilled to be home again, doing work she loves and guiding the library she loved as a child to its next level of service

TONDA MORRIS BRUTON MEMORIAL LIBRARY DIRECTOR

BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

ond memories fuel the exuberance Tonda Morris exudes as Director of Bruton Memorial Library in Plant

City. “I loved coming here as a child,” she recalled. Weekdays Morris walked from her family’s Knight Street home to the bookfilled haven. “I would read awhile and then visit my grandmother on Saunders Street before she took me home.” Returning after 10 years with the Smyrna, Georgia library, Morris is now living her dream of “directing a city library.” “I love working in city government,” she shared. “Along with Plant City’s wonderful administrators, our staff is working toward continuous improvement in every area of community service, including the library.” City Manager Michael Herr references Bruton as “the downtown idea center.” She continued, “He is so aware of the library’s important role, and city staff, library board members, and Friends of the Library volunteers have been exceptionally helpful with our improvements.” City service craftsmen recently updated “Billy’s Garden Patio,” the north-facing screened retreat donated by the Pou family. Additions included rocking chairs, textured flooring, overhead fan and Garden Club potted plants. Morris invites shoppers to the relocated Friends’ Bookstore. “We’ve tripled sales and lowered prices [$0.25 to $1.00],” she shared. “We’re displaying large print books now and preparing for our huge Christmas sale November 20-21, 2015. The repositioned children’s computer area will soon have one for parents, too, and

perhaps several iPad stations, along with schools’ displays of student art. A rare book and local artifacts display is also planned because Morris values heritage. Her office contains historic family photos of grandfather Don Walden, Sr., [former mayor, general store owner and Chevrolet dealer]; aunt Christine Walden [fourth Strawberry Queen, 1933] with mother/ court member Anna Sue Walden; and L.I. ESTHER ZEIGLER Esther Zeigler was born and raised in Plant City. She is a slim, attractive woman who doesn’t look or act her age of 80. Esther didn’t live in Plant City all her life. She lived in California for quite some time during her marriage. Once she and her husband were told he had cancer, he wanted to bring her “back home” so that she wouldn’t be alone in California. She is the first born of seven children and most of her siblings were here. Esther is retired but she does have a job that she takes seriously. What job do you have that you are fervent about? After I retired, working out at the gym became my job. I also try to watch what I eat as much as I am able. She laughs. I work out five days a week. Even before I retired I’d get up and get myself to the gym before I went to work. I became more serious about the importance of keeping my joints moving after retirement 36

Are you involved in any organizations or clubs? I’m a member of the Plant City Women’s Club and have been for many years. I’m a greeter there now. They do so much in the community and the world, too. It’s a wonderful service club. I am also a Hospice Volunteer. I do that one day a week. It’s so rewarding because they do such great things. I feel like I’m giving back when I work there because they were so good to my husband and me. What have you enjoyed the most so far in your life? Well, when I was married my husband played the guitar and I sang. That was the most fun. People still remind me about those days. You don’t sing now? No. When my husband was alive he made it right. He coached me and helped me develop as a singer. I couldn’t do that now. He’s the one that told me I could and so I did. What would you like to do that you haven’t done yet? I want to take a cross-country train ride. I want to continue what I’m doing and stay active. I do want to know the Bible better. I want to read and study more. I read my Bible but I want to know it better than I do.

CORY WALKER

Some of the things you might notice about Cory Walker (besides his country good looks) is his comfortable charm and his deep, smooth voice. He was born in Orlando but has lived in the Plant City area for most of his life. Cory has a lot going on for a 21 year old man. He’s a full time barber at New York Cuts & Gifts in Lakeland. He enjoys his job because he has a good boss and he likes cutting hair because he gets to know so many of his clients. Cory is pursuing his dream while he’s making a living. He is a singer, plays guitar, bass, and key board. His love of music comes from an early age. His grandfather, Dewey Walker, is a musician and Cory has learned much of what he knows from him. Corey began singing and performing before an audience when he was 13. His dad, Eric Walker, asked him one night if he was nervous before he went on stage. “No, sir,” said Cory. “I guess that sounds strange not to be nervous but performing for a crowd comes natural to me.” During his high school years he was with a group of other musicians and singers that loved music as much as he did. They played everything from Heavy Metal to Rock. It took a while to develop his identity and find

that country music fits him heart and soul. He likes the classic country that his grandfather loves but his style is influenced by the other forms of music he has played through the years. Besides performing with his granddad on stage in Lakeland, Cory has appeared at Keel & Curley Winery and other venues in Florida. His dream is to perform more and perfect his craft. People don’t want to take a chance on a man unless he’s well known. You can’t be well known unless someone takes a chance on you, Cory explains. He plans to stay with it and work hard. He doesn’t have a choice. It’s in his blood. He hopes that when people hear him sing they will recognize a distinct voice. He has cut two independent albums so far. They can be purchased on I-Tunes, on his website (corywalkermusic.com), or purchased at any of his shows. His email is corywalker@gmail.com.

THE PLANT CITY DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION’S STONE MONUMENT

On the east side of Plant City, Florida, stands a stone monument in the shape of an arrowhead, symbolic of the area’s earlier Native American residents. It was constructed by William E. Calvert as a DAR memorial to the first post office, the Echebucsassa Post Office, which was established in 1849 four miles north of that spot – which today is the area of the intersection of Wilder Road and Midway Road. The monument is constructed of stones and rocks, some gathered by DAR members from Blackwater Creek near Crystal River, and some from other states and donated by DAR members. On the

back of the monument is a cement slab with names etched into it and the date “January first 1932.” The somewhat legible names on the slab include the 1932 President of the Plant City chapter, Connie Zell Maguire, of Kentucky; Anna Herron Moody, Tennessee; Ida Parks Moody; and Henry and Ada Clay. The slab is edged with stones from Stone Mountain, Georgia; Ashland, Virginia; and other areas. The monument sits in Sunrise Park at the east apex of Baker and Reynolds Streets (US92) bordered on the west by Warnell Street. Take a drive to the park and walk up to the monument. It’s a small park with a beautiful, rustic, solid commemorative monument to the history of Plant City.

hroughout our history, civic clubs and organizations have made impressive efforts to improve America’s quality of life through the promotion of educational and cultural programs and through the preservation of our history. Among these are many women’s clubs and organizations that were founded nationwide many years ago, with local chapters being formed in cities across the country and in Plant City. One of the earlier organizations was the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) which was organized in 1873 and Plant City’s chapter was active in the early 1900s. 38

Many of these women also belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R. or DAR), as did the well-known civic leader Annie Schneider. Plant City’s chapter of the DAR was the Echebucsassa Chapter and was organized in 1929, with the first President being Mrs. Mary Noel Estes Moody, widow of Thomas Edwin Moody, Sr.

Blue Sun Realty is the fastest growing real estate company in Plant City. With 5 star Zillow ratings and excellent customer reviews, it’s no wonder they are highly recommended throughout our community. We sat down with Angie Inzerillo, broker of Blue Sun Realty, to learn about their success and why people choose them for their real estate needs. FOCUS MAGA ZINE PL ANT CIT Y JULY 2015

How did you get into Real Estate?

Angie Inzerillo: By accident! Ten years ago, my husband and I began investing in rental properties. We wanted to be in a position to make offers and review contracts on our own and as such, I decided to obtain my real estate license. After the first couple of transactions however, I was hooked! I started to really love what I was doing and decided to pursue it as a career. Soon after I sought out to work with real estate teams and brokers that would teach me about the business of real estate. I had the tenacity, the drive and a background in business and marketing… but needed to learn the industry. Fortunately for me, I was recruited by one of the largest real estate chains in Plant City and learned a great deal from an exceptional broker (thank you Lisa!). After some excellent years and personal successes, I opted to start my own team under this real estate chain. Thus, in 2010 Blue Sun Homes was formed and based out of Plant City. By the time our team had grown to 4 people in 2012, we were a top sales team in the Plant City branch with $8.1 Million in sales that year.

What prompted you to start your own agency?

Angie: In a word…Flexibility. While the training I received from my broker was exceptional,

42

JULY 2015 focusplantcity.com

there were indeed some disadvantages to working as an independent agent at a real estate chain. Large chains tend to enforce an “agent-type” model - where agents independently work and compete against each other. Individual achievement is prioritized over team goals and there is little cohesion nor focus as a team. This model differed vastly to the one that Blue Sun Homes had evolved into. Our business evolved into a team oriented model, where each of us contributed and relied on the other. In 2012, we added property management services, commercial property sales, investor relations, home buyer specialization programs and more to better serve our clients. Unfortunately this type of business and some of our services (property management and commercial real estate services) were not part of the “agent model” and weren’t allowed by the chain. The corporate processes and environment soon impeded our ability to service our clients and grow our business. That’s when we knew it was time to make a change. Thus in January 2013, Blue Sun Realty was formed. Today – Blue Sun Realty is not just an agency…. We’re a Real Estate Service Provider handling just about any real estate service our clients have.

How is a Real Estate Service Provider different than an Agent?

Angie: Lots of ways! First is our our team based approach to providing services to our clients. Similar to other types of professional service providers such as IT or Accounting Services, each member of our team specializes in key areas of the real

estate industry. This helps them each become experts in a particular focal point of the industry providing much greater value for our customers. For example, Sarah Lenhart is our Director of Property Management and manages hundreds of properties for our investor community. She manages our property management and tenant placement services as well as P&L for our property investors. Brett Davis specializes in helping our customers looking to upgrade their current home. He knows the process and how to construct specialized contracts for these types of purchases and is an invaluable resource for buyers who need to sell their home to purchase a new one. Crystal Meade and Stephanie Eisenbach focus their efforts on helping first time home buyers. They are amazing at guiding our clients through the searching, selection, negotiation, contracting and closing – which often seem very complex processes. They make it simple and easy for our customers. Don Lopez helps clients from out of state who are looking to relocate to the Tampa Bay area. A seasoned Floridian, Don knows the Tampa Bay landscape like the back of his hand – schools, communities, industry, entertainment, etc. Clients often rely on his expertise to help them decide on where to live. Supporting all of them is Sherry Gladden. As a realtor and soon to be associate broker, Sherry assists the team with all contracts, rent collections, accounting, investor relations, marketing, listings and more. As for me – I’m a working broker helping people to stage, market and sell their homes or commercial properties as well as find real estate investments. I work alongside every member of our team, backing them up and helping them out on every deal. As you see, a Real Estate Service

Provider starkly contrasts to that of large real estate chains staffed with lots of agents working against each other. At a chain, there is no team, no redundancy and no specialization. Blue Sun Realty benefits our clients by having an entire team with over 35 years sales and real estate experience working for them. For example if they are upgrading their home – they’ve got at least 3 people helping with that; If they invest in real estate – 4 people will support them; buying a home… there’s at least 3 of us working on it. This has proved to be immensely valuable to our clients because with a team behind them, they see better and faster results.

Why did you Launch Blue Sun Realty in Plant City?

Angie: It’s our home! With the exception of Brett, our entire team raises a family in Plant City. Some of us were raised here as kids too… on strawberry farms, on horse pastures, on Walden Lake… we’ve called Plant City our home since childhood. Many of us also participate in community organizations and events such as the Junior Women’s Club, the Walden Lake PTA, FFA, Chris Welbon’s Karate Tournament Team, dog park fundraising, golf tournament committees, etc. Having an office here allows us to dedicate time and give back to our local community. In that sense, it’s exciting to be able to build a business in the town that you’ve known your whole life. Everywhere we go – from restaurants to churches, ballfields and the Strawberry Festival… we see people that we’ve helped. It makes the experience of helping

Call us at 813-365-3370

our clients much more personal… and very rewarding. In fact, seventy-five percent of our business comes from recommendations and repeat business of people in this town who we have worked with and know us. As a result, we’re the fastest growing Real Estate Company in Plant City!

Why Are You the Fastest Growing Real Estate Company in Plant City?

Angie: We have GREAT people on our team. It may sound cliché, but all of our realtors help our clients as if they were helping their moms. And as I mentioned, our company model encourages collaboration and reinforces a team based approach to servicing customers. If you read our reviews, our clients overwhelmingly give us 5-Star ratings and exceptional remarks about their experience with us. Often they recommend us to their friends and family. As a result, our sales have grown from $10.1 Million in sales in 2013 to a forecast north of $23 Million this year. In short, we’ve doubled in revenue in 2 years – all while focusing in the Plant City area.

What Advice do you have for people who want to buy, sell or invest in Real Estate?

Angie: Call us! We have a professional and welcoming team that provides solid advice in all areas of real estate. We’ll let you know if we can help, how we can help and put together a plan that gets you the results you are aiming for. I also invite you to take a look at some of the 40+ reviews on Zillow about the agents at Blue Sun Realty. You’ll see stories in there of us getting results other agents couldn’t. Tales of how we sold homes in weeks that others had on the market for months; stories of how we helped buyers qualify for, search and negotiate their home – when they thought they could never afford one; remarks about how we helped find investments yielding over 16% returns. These are unfiltered comments from our clients. Like you, they had questions, doubts, needs and goals. For each one of them, we worked as a team and provided an exceptional experience and result for them. This is what the team at Blue Sun Realty commits to do for you.

Signature Realty | 813-759-9449 | patcomstock@msn.com

Multi-million dollar producer, Pat Comstock, of Signature Realty has been selling real estate for almost a quarter of a century. She is a 30 year resident of Walden Lake, so it’s quite natural that she specializes in residential sales in that community. However, she is also at ease selling country property in both Hillsborough and Polk counties. The key to Pat’s success comes from knowing the market and listening to her customer. She understands that each customer has unique needs when it comes to buying or selling a home and she tries to guide their expectations to a realistic end goal based on current market conditions. Although well past the age of expected retirement, the satisfaction of sitting at the closing table with smiles all around keeps motivating Pat to continue selling real estate. “I’ll probably continue to sell real estate for as long as I remain healthy because it is just such a wonderful feeling knowing you have helped someone accomplish their dream of home ownership” Pat says. And she must be doing something right because approximately 90% of her business comes to her through referrals from friends, a lot of whom she initially met while selling them real estate, and past clients, which is a great testimony. If you are looking to buy or sell a home, why not give Pat a call? She’s ready to listen and would love to get acquainted with you. Oh, and for those of you who remember Pat’s son, Kevin Helms, the racer, yes he is still racing and in fact is currently #1 in points in the nation in the Stock Eliminator class. AceRealtyAdvisors, LLC 2504 Walden Woods Drive, Suite 1 | Plant City, FL 33566 | 813-567-7198 | acebid.com/realty As one of Plant City’s newest firms, Ace Realty Advisors, LLC offers several advantages to its customers. “We’re much more than just a real estate company,” offered John Haney, President and Managing Broker. “We provide complete solutions to property owners and purchasers.” By “complete,” Haney means that the firm offers a full line of services to commercial and residential real estate buyers and sellers, including: • Commercial and residential brokerage • Auctions • Property management • Property maintenance and cleanup • Leasing • In-house legal counsel providing escrow and closing services “To our knowledge,” said Haney, “Ace is the only agency in the Plant City area offering all those services under one roof. We like to think of ourselves as a “one stop service provider.” Meet the Principals After working together many years with another company, Joe Nolan, Gigi Nolan and Haney decided the time was

Haney explained, “We three brought together a firm that offered commercial, residential and agricultural brokerage, auctioneering expertise, and an in-house legal counsel complete with title, escrow and closing services. Haney, a Plant City native, grew up in the real estate business and knew from a young age it would be his life’s work. Plant City’s Top Realtors Shop Local

You can shop local without paying a penny more. Florida Mortgage Firm’s model offers no underwriting fee, and when you combine that with its wholesale interest rates — as opposed to retail — clients can save a ton of money. Plus, lifelong resident Davis employs local people who contribute to the local economy. When financing through Florida Mortgage Firm, customers are promoting the local economy, ultimately helping their neighbors. “Plant City is a premier community in which to buy a home, raise a family and establish deep roots,” Davis said. “Our staff hopes to earn your business. Call today and let us help you be ready for your next real estate transaction.” NMLS #289323

FloridaMortgageFirm 1507 South Alexander Street #101 | Plant City, FL 33563 | 813-707-6200 | www.FLMortgageFirm.com Florida Mortgage Firm staff members treat their clients like neighbors. “That’s one key to our success,” shared owner Nate Davis. “While our company is a constantly evolving hybrid with a multitalented team of technologically savvy employees, we still believe in delivering old-fashioned customer service.” Most of the 15 colleagues in the Plant City office hail from the Winter Strawberry Capital and its surrounding communities. Their combined experience in the mortgage industry totals more than 100 years.

New Name, Same Great Service

Davis felt a need to start his own business in the real estate industry after serving in the United States Marine Corp and as an analyst for GEICO. He grew up working on HUD homes with his mother, who owned a title company. In 2008, he opened the Plant City Mortgage Corporation, serving customers throughout Florida. When business continued to boom statewide, 56

JULY 2015 focusplantcity.com

Davis changed the name to Florida Mortgage Firm to reflect the company’s broader service area. “We treat every customer personally,” he said. “Actual people answer our phones and team members offer direct access to their cell phones instead of a 1-800 number.” “Nobody works harder to close loans as fast as possible and at the highest approval efficiency,” Davis continued. “Plus, our loan officers have extensive experience with reviewing credit score to advise on credit-challenged matters.” A brief video on the company’s Web site explains how Florida Mortgage Firm can help.

Why Choose Florida Mortgage Firm?

According to agent Aaron Oberlin, “The mortgage industry is riddled with antiquated ways of conducting business.” He describes the staff at Florida Mortgage Firm as folks with “a wide array of talent who are pushing the mortgage industry into the next generation, providing an improved experience, whether someone is buying,

refinancing or building a home.” He continued, “Our firm is geared for speed. While our loan process is quick, we have a never-settle attitude. We’re constantly motivated to offer better, faster and more personal service.” Davis added, “We become the project manager in the real estate transaction, directing and orchestrating all parties involved to provide a more efficient outcome. No one wants to hear ‘the other guy’ created setbacks and issues. We operate as ‘Thumb Pointers’ and not finger-pointers. Ultimately, should anything adverse occur, we point to ourselves and ask how it could have been done better, as opposed to blaming others.”

Why Plant City?

Loyalty and honesty are guiding principles at Florida Mortgage Firm. Davis offered, “I often tell clients, ‘When I see you at the grocery store or restaurant, you can be assured I’ll not need to look down or turn my head away. That’s because I know for certain you’ll be treated like family during your loan experience.’”

Mortgage Shopping Tips Purchasers: Discover how much you can afford and want to spend. With a comprehensive analysis of your credit profile, loan officers can troubleshoot things that might hinder approval, helping buyers get on the right track to an ideal mortgage situation. Be Prepared. Consider the cost of taxes and insurance in addition to principal and interest. Many mortgage calculators on the Internet mislead because they don’t present actual financial costs. The easy-to-use calculator at www.FLMortgageFirm.com details how much the monthly principal, interest, taxes and insurance will actually be. Get a second opinion. Not all lenders are created equal and this applies to rates, costs, approvability and loan programs. It’s common for Florida Mortgage Firm to approve a Fannie Mae loan that another may have denied or approved for a lower amount. That’s because the company doesn’t have self-imposed lending restrictions, also known as “overlays,” that other retail outlets commonly have. Professional and Community Involvement Florida Mortgage Firm maintains memberships in the Plant City Chamber of Commerce and both the Florida and National Association of Mortgage Professionals. Employees are also involved with charitable causes such as Dancing with the Locals, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, American Cancer Society, Florida Strawberry Festival Steer Show, Plant City Pig Jam, and the Sole Sisters Charity Run & Walk for Cancer Research.

onstruction cooled down after the real-estate bubble popped in 2008, but the industry can feel it starting to warm. In 2005, at the height of the housing boom in the South, construction began on more than 1.8 million homes in the region, according the U.S. Census Bureau. New builds then bottomed out in 2009 to a little more than a half million, the lowest it had been in 50 years. During the past six years, though, the number of new residential construction has pushed upward to more than 840,000. While the increase is a beacon for optimism, there are a limited number of outlets for people who want to get a construction loan, or what is known in the industry as construction-topermanent financing. One of the plethora of reasons why many lenders are not offering this is because there is too much risk to loan money for a home that is not yet finished. My team, however, is offering construction financing with the FHA, VA and conventional loan programs.

These are available for 15-30 years with a fixed rate, and down payments can be as low as 0-3.5%. If you have owned a lot for more than six months (financed or owned free and clear), then its appraised value can be used toward the down payment and closing costs on your construction loan. If it hasn’t been six months yet, then any money used as a down payment to acquire the land, as well as any improvements to it, may be used as cash equity toward the down payment and closing costs. A lot can also be gifted from a family member, and its entire value may be used to satisfy the down payment and closing costs. This is helpful for someone who might not have enough for a down payment or wants to keep more liquid cash in his or her accounts. There can be a lot of nuances to these programs, so call 813-707-6200 if you have any questions about FHA, VA or conventional loans, or new-home construction financing. My team will be glad to help.

he Walden Lake Community Association Board Meetings are the third Monday of each month at the Walden Lake Community Association office building on Griffin Boulevard in Walden Lake. The next meetings are scheduled for July 20th and August 17th at 7:00 PM. The meetings are open to all Walden Lake residents. Watch the announcement boards at all entrances for dates and times for special meetings. There is a hearing of the Planning Board on August 13th at 6:00 PM at the Trinkle Center for those interested or would like to speak regarding Visions Golf rezoning application. To review what is happening, you can visit the City’s website at www.PlantCityGov. com. On the home page, there is a link that takes you to any communication between Visions Golf and the City as well as reports, studies and drawings submitted by Visions. On the City’s site, there is a new letter dated July 1st from Hillsborough County’s The Planning Commission, Senior Planner, Jay Collins, sent to City Planner, Julie Ham, outlining concerns regarding Visions Golf ’s plans as submitted. This is one document that I would recommend Walden Lake residents read. The semi-annual membership fees were due July 1st and you should have already paid your 2nd bi-annual assessment. Paying your dues in a timely manner is one way the Board is able to keep our dues low. It is sometimes important to remind residents of how low our dues are considering what is offered in our community. We have a tremendous amount of common area, walking trails,

a park, dog park, polo field, 30 entrances and more to maintain. At a special meeting, the Board unanimously approved hiring a new security company, which will be in place on August 1st. In the first half of 2015, there were 72 sales in Walden Lake and Walden Lake East with an average price of $203,853. he FOCUS ON YOU MAKEOVERS are our favorite at Focus Magazine. From picking the deserving winners, to watching them get a full makeover, the two day extravaganza is one we look forward to. This year our four winners were Leigh Hotle, Pam Bennett, Yvette Harrold, and Christina Lariscy. We began this exciting event on Thursday evening of June 25th, with a shopping spree at the new RAOK Boutique located at 2804 James L. Redman Parkway. Owners, Brigitte Hodge and her daughter, Hannah Benton, graciously funded this part of the event. The ladies had a great time helping each other find just the right outfit. Trying on different clothes and matching it up with jewelry to top it all off 66

called for a great deal of smiles and laughter. After all these sweet ladies have experienced, they deserved a night of fun and a moment to be spoiled. The night didn’t end there. When all purchases were made, it was then time to move on for a sweet treat at Tani’s Dessert Restaurant. From chocolate cake, to fondue, they enjoyed getting to know one another and sharing the excitement of the night. The next day was just as enjoyable. Friday began with a delicious breakfast provided at Fred’s Restaurant. This was just what they needed to kick off their long day of fun. After a few photo shots, they were headed to their day of pampering, escorted in a car donated for the day by Jarret Scott Ford. Driving in style to

their destinations, Hotle and Bennett arrived at The Artistry Salon and Spa, while Harrold and Lariscy headed on over to The Breeze. Each lady received a facial, massage, manicure, pedicure, and visit with the hairstylist/makeup artist. The end results were fascinating! At the Artistry, owned by Ron and Jana Evers, Hotle and Bennett had their facials done by Tonya Groninger and their massages were done by Leah Clark. Linda Hall and Joann Register did their manicures and pedicures. Hotle’s hair stylist and makeup artist was Sarah Pentecost. Bennett’s hairstylist and makeup artist was Millied Reed. The entire staff at the Artistry went above and beyond to make this day very special for these two ladies. Jana and Ron had the day planned perfectly with no gaps in between. The two ladies truly enjoyed their visit there. Every detail was on target right down to the area setup for their lunch to arrive. These girls truly had the V.I.P. status at the Artistry. The Breeze, owned by Angela Killebrew, also had great things in store for Harrold and Lariscy. They were ready for the ladies and planned their day of pampering for a truly enjoyable day. Sloan Short was there for their facials, manicures, and pedicures while Diane Stockton did the massages. Harrold’s hairstylist and makeup artist was Angel Green. She took her time giving Harrold just the right look. Michelle Dodge was the hair stylist and makeup artist for Lariscy. We at Focus

When it came time for nominations to begin, Yvette Harrold was nominated by friends who have noticed all the wonderful things about her. She is known to be a truly giving and caring person. She has helped others during their hardships and time of need, never once complaining or judging. She has even been known to take in a family member to help them get on the right path in life. Her heart goes out to others and she thinks of them first. Life has thrown her many challenges with the loss of family members throughout the years. Through hard times of losing loved ones so close to her, she has proved to be one tough lady and never stops helping those in need. Focus Magazine chose Yvette because of her caring personality and love for others. She deserved special treatment for herself because she continuously shows it to others. It was time for her to be spoiled and pampered. During her visit to RAOK, Yvette enjoyed looking through the clothes and picking out her outfit. Her smile showed just how appreciative she was to owners of the store. At Tani’s, she enjoyed her dessert and the company of the other ladies while they got to know her. When her makeover day was complete, Yvette had a whole new look the amazed everyone. Her guest for dinner, Martha Robbins, kept saying what a wonderful job they did making her friend look great. We agree that she looks terrific.

Pam Bennett Pam Bennett was nominated by friends who stated she contributed a great deal to our youth in the community. Pam and her late husband, Buddy Bennett had a huge influence on the Plant City Dolphins little league football organization. Buddy was the President of the Plant City Dolphins and was involved with them for 30 years even when his children grew out of the league. They both cared so much for the youth and Pam still continues that love and care for the kids. Pam stuck right by his side as he battled cancer and lost the fight in February of this year. Her love and concern for others is the very reason many people know she was very deserving of the honor of getting a whole day to herself of pampering. Although she was hesitant at first on receiving the honor, Pam was very exciting and amazed at the outcome. She says she was so thankful that she didn’t turn it down. Sometimes when you are the one that is always giving, it is hard to be the one to receive. She had a great time picking out her outfit at RAOK and enjoying the dessert at Tani’s. During her pampering day, Pam was all smiles and truly enjoyed every minute. Pam certainly deserved everything she received during her makeover experience. Her outcome was beautiful. Her guest for dinner was Teresa Keen, her best friend for 39 years. Keen was very happy with the results and was so glad she got to share the moment with her. FOCUS MAGA ZINE PL ANT CIT Y JULY 2015

were truly touched by Dodge’s sincere care in Laricy’s makeover. With the trials of which wig to use or whether one was needed at all, a great deal of sweet caring emotions went into play. In the end, we all decided Lariscy looks terrific with or without a wig. She has an inner beauty that shines far beyond anything else. During their long day of pampering, Chili’s made the day even brighter by providing each lady with a lunch of their choice. The lunches were dropped off at their pampering site by our very own Jennifer Chamberlain, who did a great deal of running around to get everything done throughout the day. This day would not have been possible without her. When all of the pampering was over and the makeovers were complete, each lady went home to rest for a short time. Then, they were off to meet up once again with each other for a night of fun at Ryuu Japanese Steakhouse located

Christina Lariscy Christina was nominated by friends who recognize her for her care and love for her daughter even through her toughest time in life. With the devastating news of the diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in July of 2014, Christina remained strong. She has been fighting this cancer for one year and will not give up. With more treatments ahead of her, she remains hopeful. Her cheerful smile lets everyone know just how positive she is and passes this positive personality on to her daughter. She was very excited to begin this makeover journey and spent a lot of time going through different outfits to find the right one for her. She chose my favorite skirt in the store and it looked fabulous on her. Her mother, Angela Najphor was so appreciative of the makeover her daughter was receiving. She continuously thanked Focus for the generosity. With both of their smiles throughout this experience, you could see just how much the two enjoyed themselves. During her makeover, she was willingly to try different ideas and never once complained. With a huge smile on her face, Christina truly enjoyed her day. Her mom joined her for dinner and was thrilled with how happy her daughter was. My favorite part was seeing Christina’s little girl come into Ryuu when it was all over to thank us personally for giving her mom a day she would always remember. That sweet little girl was thrilled at all the wonderful things her mom received and wanted to thank us herself. That is impressive to see a preschooler with that much mannerism. Looking great inside as well as outside, you deserved this special day Christina!

at Brandon Town Center and Westfield Mall. Dressed in their outfits they chose the night before, each lady was ready for their photo shoot. When all of the posing was over, it was time to eat. As soon as they were seated with their guest, each lady was given a bouquet of flowers provided by Creative Flower Designs by Glenn in Plant City. Our chef for the night was named Lucky and had us laughing and truly enjoying ourselves. With fire blazing in front of us, we all talked and watched Lucky entertain us while making our food. This day proved to be a success. We could not have pulled it off without the help of the many donations of the businesses mentioned. A great deal of love, compassion, and kindness made this day complete. Thank you to all of the people who helped to make this a joyful day for these deserving ladies.

Leigh Hotle Many letters came in nominating Leigh Hotle for this deserving makeover. The letters had similar stories that all pointed to the fact that this lady is so caring and thoughtful of others. She is a first grade teacher at Walden Lake Elementary and all of her students love her. She has a heart that pours out for others. I can vouch for that. Leigh jumped in and helped me during a horrible time in my life. As a teacher myself, I didn’t have to worry about lesson plans or any extra details, Leigh stayed after school many hours to do her plans as well as cover for me. This is just one act of kindness she has displayed throughout the years I have known her. Leigh has also setup an entire room designated to teachers at the school called the “Supply Closet”. She came up with the idea when she noticed some teachers that needed some items that others were trying to get rid of. This system works out wonderfully and the school appreciates Leigh so much. During this past school year Leigh started noticing some changes of the muscles in her arms. As she progressively got worse, unable to get her young daughter out of her car seat, doctors finally came to the diagnosis of ALS. Leigh has good days mixed with bad days, but never once loses her smile when someone needs help. She may feel down, but she is the first one to jump up to help someone else. That is what everyone loves about her. This is why she was chosen as one of the winners of the makeover. She deserved it. Leigh enjoyed her night of shopping with her friend Alina Warren. The two had a great time picking out clothes and jewelry to match. They also enjoyed their desserts at Tani’s. Her day of pampering was just as exciting. Later that night Leigh’s husband, Jason, joined her for dinner. He told me she was beautiful, and he was right. Her makeover looked great and the smile on her face said it all. elton’s Meat and Produce houses a world of multi-cultural food items inside its 12,000 square foot grocery store at US 92 and Maryland Avenue in Plant City. Today, Lee Williams and his sister Karen Davis, who grew up in the business, manage the family-owned operation established in 1955 by their father Felton. Widely recognized for its impressive meat department, Felton’s feels like the neighborhood butcher shop of yesteryear. Great pricing on fresh, frozen, custom cuts, and smoked meats place this local grocery in a league by itself. Families can enjoy even more savings by ordering 24 hours in advance from four “meat bundles,” priced $55 to $139. Simply view the packages online, call 813-752-1548, receive an e-mail confirmation, and pick up tomorrow. Regular customers have also discovered a treasure trove in Felton’s freshly smoked or fried meats, smoked onsite or deli-ready to become the main dish of your lunch or evening meal. To give your home’s cook a break on extra busy days, stop by Felton’s to make dinner a quick done. pork and chicken or its deli-prepared fried pork chops, chicken drumsticks, and wings. When extra large gatherings demand larger quantities, Felton’s will prepare any meat purchased in the store. Folks can also order smoked turkeys 24 hours in advance and four days prior for smoked whole hogs. Of his approximately 90 regular employees’ loyalty to customers, Williams shared: “For big weekends like the Fourth of July, we feel like we’re going home with them to enjoy the foods they buy. It’s the same for Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, too. We’re part of their family, and they’re part of ours.” Of his work with Felton’s since 1957, Meat Department Manager Ed Jackson said, “Everything about this store and the meat business thrills me to death. The people are just like family…You would think I owned it.” In addition to quality meats and competitive pricing, Felton’s also boasts the “largest selection of seasonings on the planet,” including meat seasonings, spices, rubs, and sauces for the at-home chefs and BBQ specialists. The store also offers specialties such as Orale!™ spices/ peppers/herbs, Jarritos fruit beverages,

a variety of rice in 20-pound bags, green and hot boiled peanuts, fresh-made salads, baked beans, potato wedges, and banana pudding. To complement meals, Produce Manager Ron Marshall purchases fruits and fresh vegetables, including ethnic favorites, from local growers and markets as often as possible. “We specialize in fresh greens such as collards, turnip, mustard and kale,” he said, “because they’re a big deal in this area.” Because of Felton’s rich history with the Plant City community, customer service is a priority. Service desk employees, including Anne Heidgerd, enjoy helping shoppers with postage stamp purchases, TECO and Bright House payments, check cashing, Western Union and Orlandi Valuta money orders or transfers, food stamps/EBT/WIC cards and corporate or organizational accounts. his leadership. “Lee sets the example and we all try to follow.” Felton’s maintains professional affiliations with the National Grocers Association, the Florida Retail Federation, and the Food Market Institute, among others. Williams offered, “Our very talented people, skilled in their areas of expertise, make Felton’s successful. It’s all about quality, freshness, great prices and positive attitudes.” “We enjoy serving this community,” he continued, “and know that God has incredibly blessed our business and our families. It’s satisfying to give back by helping churches and especially programs for kids in need. We couldn’t do that if customers didn’t support us and are so grateful they do.”

Plant City High School’s star running back Markese Hargrove exemplifies the picture perfect student athlete by excelling in both athletics and academics.

MARKESE HARGROVE

team’s personal record for the 4 x 100 is an incredible 42 seconds. With the amount of talent that Hargrove has, there is no way that he can go unnoticed. Idaho University and Warner University have already expressed their interest and have offered him scholarships to play football at their schools. Markese says that he wishes to play at either Idaho University, Florida International University, or Wake Forrest University because they run plays that fit a running back for his size. Once in college, Hargrove plans to major in business so that he can one day become a sports agent. One of the most admirable traits of Markese is that he is completely well rounded. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Gentlemen’s Quest, and Avid. At the end of his junior year, Markese accumulated an impressive GPA of 4.7 while making only A’s and

B’s in the classroom! Markese’s mother, Kenyatta Shaw, and brother, Dazmond Patterson, have been his greatest supporters throughout his football career. He explains that his mother pushes him to do things he doesn’t want to do because she knows that it will make him an even greater athlete. As a football player at Ohio University, Dazmond always offers Markese advice on what to do to have the best shot at playing on the collegiate level. Hargrove credits his success to self-motivation. “To be successful, you need to stay motivated, stay working hard, and don’t ever give up,” he stated. With passion being the common thread though all aspects of his life, Markese Hargrove not only plans to dominate the football field during his senior season, but hopes to be a perfect example of hard work and dedication as well.

or most high school students, summer is the time for relaxation and being as far away from school as possible. For the Plant City High School football team, summer means daily conditioning and practice in the blazing Florida heat. Seventeen-yearold Markese Hargrove is one of the highly motivated Raiders who knows the importance of making the most out of his summer preparation. Hargrove has been playing football since he was four-years-old. He started out with the Plant City Dolphins youth football team. During his recreational years, he played any position that was needed on the field. “When I was in 4th grade, I started to realize that football was what I wanted to do in college and that’s when I really started to work hard towards my future,” he explained. Once he entered high school, Markese started playing defensive back and was then moved to wide receiver. As high school progressed, he solidified his position as 72

Throughout all of the games, he ran the ball for 1,400 yards and scored ten touchdowns. “I get real excited when I make a touchdown,” he expressed. “I feel like I’m a whole new person and it gives me a lot of energy.” Markese mentioned that his two best games this past season were against East Bay High School and Brandon High School. On the night that PCHS was playing East Bay, Hargrove ran the ball an impressive 269 yards in one game! When Plant City played against Brandon, Markese scored three touchdowns that won the game to advance PCHS to the playoffs. The amount of skill that this Raider has is truly amazing. During the football offseason, Hargrove runs track for PCHS. He competes in both the 200-meter dash and the 4 x 100 meter relay. His relay

baseball players have played on little league teams together, gone to school together, and even attended some of the same churches. Not only does this coaching staff wish to make these boys better baseball players, but also better kids in general. “Of course one of our goals is to make it as far as we can in the tournaments, but we want to teach them life lessons such as team work, sportsmanship, and how to represent Plant City well wherever they go.” Coton explains. “It’s all about the kids, it’s not just all about baseball and winning. As a coach, you hope that they grow as individuals and as a team along the way.” The Plant City All-Stars baseball team will play their first round of the Sectionals tournament on the weekend of July 17, 2015 in Lake Wales, Florida. Their opponent will be Belmont Heights, who has made it to the Little League World Series numerous times. Our hometown team needs our support to continue the winning tradition. CROSSFIT

BY COLLEEN STOKELY

T

his month, let’s delve into the world of Crossfit. What is Crossfit exactly? I’ve heard about it buzzing around, and I wanted to find out what all the hype was about. Crossfit is defined as “functional movements that are constantly varied at high intensity.” Crossfit is many things. Primarily it is a fitness regimens of different intense workouts, the communal aspect of crossfit is what makes it so effective. I had the opportunity to observe a crossfit class, and interview crossfit teachers, Michael and Lauren Bearden at their Crossfit in Plant City, which opened in January of 2014. Q: Who is Crossfit for? Lauren: CrossFit is for any relatively healthy individual who wants to improve their overall fitness level, body composition, and selfconfidence. You do not have to get in shape before trying CrossFit, however, you do have to come on a consistent basis, leave the ego at the door, and work hard. Q: What do you want the community to know about crossfit? Lauren: I’d like the community to know that CrossFit isn’t too scary or too 76

intense for them to try, and they don’t have to get in shape prior to joining. Are there some boxes scary and push a person too hard, too soon? Probably. But ours isn’t one of them. We are very good with beginners and established CrossFitters alike. The workouts are scaleable to practically any fitness level and we have certified, caring coaches on hand to help you learn and succeed. We recommend a slow steady progression upward. You and your coach will know when you’re ready to push a little harder or lift a little heavier. Come on in and try a class for free! Unlike, many typical gyms, we care about you as a person and count on you coming in and remaining a member for a long time. This is a relationship where we both work to improve your life. Not some bargainbin price promotion designed to take your money every month in return for minimal results. We also offer nutritional guidance. We emphasize clean eating and using whole foods or minimally processed, high quality products as a way to fuel and repair your body. After observing the class, I decided to get a students perspective on Crossfit. Here are their testimonies of how Crossfit has changed their life.

Sarah Tester “I became interested in Crossfit when the physician I work for had lost so much weight. I went to my first class in March 2014, and have been going ever since. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2008 after trying many meds, I found one that helped the dose kept getting higher along with my weight and I just felt horrible. Six months into Crossfit, I was medication free. Crossfit makes it easy you walk in and you don’t have to worry about what you’re going to do, the coaches have it all planned out for you and they can scale it to everyone from beginner to elite. In the year that I have been at Crossfit I have lost weight and inches, and gained a family. I run in 5k now and I used to hate running, now I almost love it. What people should know is that Crossfit Plant City isn’t just a gym, it’s a family. Anyone can do this no matter how big or small. Everyone has to start somewhere.”

do it, the virtues of Crossfit. I knew I had to do something. I was 220 lbs on a 5’8 frame. My blood lab results were bad. I was going into depression. Then I noticed a thing I’d known about from my military years ` tough physical training with a group of people develops a camaraderie. Shared pain. It breeds mutual respect. I found that when I was right at the end of my absolute physical endurance, the others in the class were shouting encouragement for me to push through it.

Paul Barnhill “I’ve known about Crossfit for about five years, at least. I’d never really considered trying this particular program. I’m a retired Marine, and a former cop. After I retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 2009, I’d let myself go, I was turning into an “old guy.” Working with Special Operations guys in the last several years, I’d heard again, from the few that

As I was watching Crossfit, I noticed the no judgement aspect. The ages and genders of students was very diversified. Everyone, although working at different paces and at different levels encouraged one another. There was no competition. To read more about Michael and Lauren and Crossfit Plant City go to www.crossfitplantcity.com

Those little successes, coupled with the weight loss, has sparked the passion for Crossfit. I’ve lost nearly 30 pounds, I’m succeeding in my original goals to lose some weight, and improve my physical fitness. I’m able to do things at age 56 that the vast majority of guys my age won’t even consider. Crossfit puts the “work” in workout. Quality of Life. That’s what Crossfit represents to me.”

LIFE’S PLAYLIST

BY JOE CASTAGNO

W

e all have a playlist, that group of songs that defines a particular moment in our lives or with the first refrain evokes a set of memories and emotions that transport us back in time. There are literally hundreds of scientific studies by well respected researchers and universities examining the powerful affect and influence music has on human beings, don’t worry I don’t plan on boring you with any of that. We don’t need a scientific study to know the power of music, just turn on your radio, iPod, tape player, phone or whatever it is you use to listen to your favorite tunes and you can experience it for yourself. Maybe it’s a tune that reminds you of your first serious romance, that really bad breakup, a wedding, or maybe sadly a funeral. Whatever the occasion, even that summer vacation in 1984 we all swore to never talk about, those moments can be relived in the simple melody of a favorite song. Whether you are a country music fan, ‘80s rock, contemporary Christian, barbershop, Sinatra, rap, hip hop, reggae or metal doesn’t seem to matter, it isn’t the style or genre of music that matters its our ability to imprint our memories with the music of that particular moment. So you might be thinking so what, what’s the big deal after all; and that’s a fair question I guess. And believe me I have thought about this, I’m not one to take these serious questions lightly. What I am

going to suggest may seem, well foolish and God forbid even silly, but stick with me. Our memories remind of us where we have been both good and bad, and in reminding us we know we can overcome those rough times or if need be that we have seen good times and we can again. Music is our reminder that all is survivable and that hope springs eternal. So crank up the Journey, George Straight, Hank Williams Sr., Marley, Sinatra, Tupac, Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang, Dylan, AC/DC, Rush, Willie Nelson, ABBA, Heart, or heaven forbid your favorite Britney Spears CD, whatever it is that takes you back play it loud and proud. And while you are at it I am going to suggest when you are in the car sing along like no-ones watching... they are but that’s okay they should be singing right along with you. We need to let ourselves be free to enjoy our tunes, enjoy our off key terrible singing, let that chorus soar and go for those notes we all know we can’t hit, trust me its a liberating experience. I mean do you really care what the couple in the car next to you think? Nah me either, I’ll keep singing along to my soundtrack, letting the laughter and tears flow as each tune brings back a memory. Let me leave you with this, there is one more huge benefit to joining me in this... if your singing your heart out in the car you won’t be texting and driving and of all the positives that might be the biggest one... Join me next month as we examine what a really bad idea it is to keep a “ledger” in relationships!

CANDY’S CORNER BY CANDY OWENS

H

ow beautiful is the rain! After the dust and heat. In the broad and firey street. How it clatters along the roofs, like the tramp of hoofs. How it gushes and struggles out from the overflowing spout. Across the window-pane it pours and pours; and swift and wide, like the river down the gutter roars. The rain, the welcome rain! I was sitting at my desk yesterday and happened to look out the window and noticed that it was raining. It looked like one of those beautiful soft summer rains. I thought to myself and hoped that the weather would clear up before time to go home so that I would not mess my hair up, get wet, and get mud in my car. As luck would have it, the rain got heavier and louder. Before long, the Lightning began to strike and the Thunder let out a roar. The electricity went out in my office for a minute. When it was time to go home, I ran to my car and got soaking wet, my hair melted into Cotton Candy, and I got mud in my car. I was not a happy camper. On the drive home, I started to have thoughts of the power going out where I could not get into the garage, cook dinner, do laundry, watch Television, take a shower, blow-dry my hair, and et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Once I pulled into my driveway, the rain had slowed down, my garage door opened, and the Electricity was in full operation. When I was safely in the garage, I got out of the car and looked out at the beautiful soft rain trickling from the sky. It made me think back to the days when I was a little girl who

78

JULY 2015 focusplantcity.com

loved to play in the rain. If there was no Thunder or Lightning, my Mother would let my sister and I play outside on the driveway. We would ride our bikes, dribble our basketball, hop on our hippity hops, hula hoop, grab our umbrellas and dance around like Gene Kelly in “Singin in the Rain”, put on our bathing suits and turn on the water sprinklers in the yard, and my favorite of them all, was walking down to the edge of our yard barefoot and kicking and splashing water at my sister along with the neighborhood kids. I can still hear my Mother yelling out the front door for us to get out of the gutter before we got “Ground Itch”. My sister would scare me and tell me that I would get worms and bugs in my feet from walking bare foot in the gutter when it rained. I never thought to ask her why she wouldn’t get worms and bugs in her feet if she was walking and splashing water while barefoot along-side me. I’ve learned through the years that that is what older sisters do. They make you crazy! If a bad storm came and our Electricity went out, my sister and I would get a little scared but our parents tried to make it fun. I can remember my Father would get his flashlight and go out in our garage and get the old Kerosene Hurricane lamps that belonged to his Grandmother and placed them in the Kitchen, Dining Room, Family Room, and the Bathrooms while my Mother would light candles. My Father would turn on his radio and listen to the weather, music, and his favorite: “Radio Free Europe”. We thought that was so cool to hear people from all over the world speaking. Hey!...that was

something for the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. After a while my sister and I would get a little bored so my parents would have us play cards, tell jokes, stories, do shadow puppets on the wall, sing songs, dance, color by flashlight, and tell Ghost Stories…until I got scared. (Then it was time to change the subject.) When it was time to eat, my parents would go in the Kitchen and build us a picnic “fit for a King”. We would have something like: Ham and Pineapple sandwiches, pork and beans right out of the can, potato chips, cookies, and if we were real lucky, my parents would put “Jet Puffed” Marshmallows on a fork and light them with their lighters so we could have a roasted yummy treat. Hey!!!! How cool was that? When it was time for bed our parent would put a lamp in my Bedroom so that I would not be afraid. Soon, my sister would join me under the pretense of: “protecting me from the Boogie-Man!”

HA! HA! When we woke up the next morning, the sunshine was out and allthe world was good again. My Sister and I had wonderful tales to share with our friends about our picnic by candlelight, the games that we played, and the Ghost Stories we told in the dark. We were too young at the time to think about all the things that parents worry about when there is a bad storm, like: A leak in the roof, Lightning striking the house, all the food in the Fridge going bad, the Electric Garage doors not opening, and no Electricity to get ready for work the next day. It made me realize one more time, that we as adults need to learn to not sweat the small stuff ! We need to relax and enjoy our lives. We need to laugh more and make the best of every situation. As-long-as we have our health, a roof over our heads, family and friends, and our Faith, WE HAVE IT ALL!!!!!!!!!!

WANDA’S WORDS OF WISDOM BY WANDA “LEWIS” ANDERSON

I

f you enjoy being outdoors but don’t like the itchy bug bites here’s a few helpful tips for you. You can actually warm up a spoon by running warm water over it and apply to mosquito bite to take away the itch. Be careful not to get it too warm. Next time you make a lemon meringue pie save a little for your bug bites. Applying lemon meringue pie to the bug bites will stop it from itching. If you don’t have the pie handy a little lemon juice and water will reduce the redness and the itch. Speaking of lemons, did you know that lemons help keep ants away? Just squirt some lemon juice on door thresholds and your windowsills. Then squeeze some lemon juice into any holes or cracks where the ants get in. Scatter some small slices of lemon peel around the outdoor entrance. Lemons are also effective for getting rid of roaches and fleas. Just mix the juice of 4 lemons (along

with the rinds) with 1/2 gallon (2 liters) water and wash your floors with it. The fleas and roaches will flee as they hate the smell. A little tooth paste on a mosquito bite helps to stop the itching. When applied to the mosquito bite the bite goes down and dries out. Did you know that using Baby oil cream will repel bugs and mosquitos? Just apply it to your skin and the bugs may fly around you but they won’t bite. Drain any standing water especially in your outdoor garbage cans. You can drill small holes in the bottom to allow any water to run out. If you get stung by a bee and the stringer needs to be removed simply rub a credit card across it and it will lift the stinger out. Wash the area afterwards with soap and water followed by a little baking soda. These tips are not intended to take the place of seeking medical attention. You should consult your health care provider before trying anything new. Until next time relax, enjoy and be thankful… FOCUS MAGA ZINE PL ANT CIT Y JULY 2015

E When Brianne first started painting, she was encouraged and taught by her Grandpa who was also an artist. In time with practice she became very adept at painting and was soon commissioned by others to do Disney Characters and Murals. Brianne stated regarding her art work now, “when I first started people told me what they wanted, now I call my own shots and I am painting what I want to paint.” Brianne’s choices of mediums are watercolor and acrylic. She is inspired by the things that she sees in nature such as sunsets and the movement and blending of color. As a busy working mother of two, Brianne has to set aside and make a

THE ART OF SHARING ART WITH OTHERS I BY HEATHER DAVIS

t is a well-known fact that everything is better when shared. The same truth applies most certainly to art. The sharing of art is reciprocal, by the act of sharing both the viewer and the artist benefit. We as the viewer benefit from having the enjoyment or perhaps experience that comes from viewing art, whereas the artist benefits from sharing their art with others through witnessing the enjoyment of the viewer as well as receiving feedback. Therefore the reason for Art Museums and Galleries. For 80

some artists sharing their art can be a difficult thing, but for artist Brianne Elliot, the act of sharing her art came to her as naturally as the need to create it. Brianne first began to display her art on Facebook, but in doing so discovered she wanted to experience bringing her art to people first hand and on a more personal level. She was invited by a mutual friend to showcase her art in the Art Lounge Gallery in downtown Plant City and immediately without hesitation decided to go for it.

Brianne has in mind a future goal of wanting to participate in the Festival of the Masters in Downtown Disney as well as someday have her own Art Gallery and teach classes. As made evident by Brianne’s active involvement in the Art Gallery located here in our town, it is clear that Brianne is well on her way of meeting her future dreams. Quick Granola

I’m preparing to move, which means that my normally messy house is in even further disarray. With everything that needs to be done before the move, I have to admit that I’ve let my eating habits slide a bit (and I nearly forgot this month’s article entirely). However, the need to come up with a quick healthy recipe that I would actually eat lead me to a great granola recipe. As far as noted healthy foods go, I know they can be pretty boring, and unfortunately often inedible. This granola, however, is versatile and any number of nuts, dried fruits, or seeds can be added to suit your personal taste.

Ingredients

• 3 cups of Quaker quick Oats • ½ cup of cashew pieces • ½ cup of peanuts (shelled and halved)

Directions

• ½ cup raisins or craisins (I used both) • 2 tsps vanilla extract • ¾ cup honey

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. In a smaller microwave safe bowl mix the vanilla extract and honey. Heat this mixture in the microwave for 15 to 30 seconds. Pour the warm mixture over the dry ingredients and mix until thoroughly coated. Spread the mixture onto an ungreased baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and stir granola around baking sheet before returning to oven for another 10 minutes. The granola should be a light golden color when done.

The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.
