As our Focus team worked this month to gather the good news about upcoming events, our famous Florida Strawberry Festival and various other civic efforts, we were reminded once again of what an amazing county this is, and of the people’s generosity. In case you’re not aware, the Polk County community volunteers rock! We’ve highlighted the Dream Center of Lakeland in this month’s Spotlight Interview, a community center and volunteer organization dedicated to helping impoverished residents and housing several ministries that work with children, young adults and seniors.

Florida’s Hispanic heritage is featured this month in our showcase of Viva Polk 2013, a celebration of 500 years in Polk County. The March issue also contains update stories about Winter Haven’s “Fitness at the Fountain,” a new flying club hoping to inspire young pilots, and the weeklong Bike Florida tour that will host hundreds of cyclists who promote tourism and work to make Florida a more bicycle friendly state. Yep, volunteers are very busy here! Hopefully, in this busy season, your family can carve out some “together time” to enjoy the world-famous Florida Strawberry Festival now in progress through Sunday, March 10. Along with the entertainment, tasty treats, rides, exhibits and vendors, your attendance is the perfect way to support the local FFA students and our very important agricultural industry.

The Public Education Partnership (PEP), created in 2011 by the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce’s education steering committee, is encouraging schoolchildren throughout the county to get involved in this monthly event. Dietitians from Winter Haven Hospital are also in attendance every month with coupons and information about eating right, and are available to answer questions regarding diet and health. This event also coincides with Main Street Market Day, so after a workout and with diet information still in participants’ minds, fresh fruits and vegetables are conveniently located for ease of purchase. The February event drew a crowd of around 80-100 people, with attendance expected to continue to rise as word gets around, so grab your workout clothes and bring the family to the fountain March 2nd and get started on a path to a better, fitter life!

itness at the Fountain offers families a fun and free way to get active and improve their health, all while enjoying the Florida sunshine. Held in downtown Winter Haven’s Central Park the first Saturday of each month through May, this event provides people of all skill levels a unique opportunity to sample different types of fitness routines from various fitness locales.

The brainchild of Nat West, retired from Winter Haven Hospital, and his wife Jane, and held in conjunction with Main Street Winter Haven Inc., Winter Haven Hospital and the City of Winter Haven, a different fitness group from the local area leads activities in the park. The first event was held September 1 with the YMCA providing music, kids games and activities, and fitness instructors leading everything from seated to high impact exercises. Since then, Health Concepts, Lifestyle Family Fitness, Habitat Health & Fitness, and Tiger’s World have hosted, with Total Fitness, Gold’s Gym and Curves rounding out the remaining dates. Participants are encouraged to work at the level most comfortable to them, and while the instructors work out at a higher impact,

they demonstrate methods to scale down the moves according to an individual’s level of comfort. “Anyone who comes won’t be a spectator,” says Jane. “The idea is to get people moving and exercising, and paying more attention to their bodies and health.”

Polk County is listed as one of the most obese counties in Florida. The county’s obesity rate of 37.6% is higher than the state average of 27.2%, meaning that Polk County has more obese people, as a percentage of the overall population, than the state. “Nat has always been very community minded,” says his wife. “When he sees an issue that would prevent our community from being the best that it can be, he tries to rectify it. When this information about obesity came to light, he wanted to try to get everyone in the community involved, to showcase what can be done to fix this problem.” A main focus is on getting the kids involved, as childhood obesity is a burgeoning issue today. Children are encouraged to participate in the same activities as the adults, although some fitness groups have specific activities geared towards children, like hula hooping

Has a Match!

Written By: Valerie McCutcheon

ocus Magazine featured a local story in the February issue about McKinze Clayton, the 7-year-old Lake Wales girl with myelodysplastic syndrome that mutated into the chromosomal disorder Monosomy 7. She was given less than 12 months to live without chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant, so family and friends launched McKinze’s Crusade to try to find a donor to save her life. Volunteers from McKinze’s Crusade and BeTheMatch.org, the national bone marrow donor registry, swabbed over 800 potential donors during four swabbing

events since mid-January. The wonderful news came February 19: McKinze has a match! She will be admitted to All Children’s Hospital on March 11 to undergo 10 days of chemotherapy treatments before her bone marrow transplant. Now that McKinze has found a match, her family is still urging others to get swabbed, in the hopes that they may be able to save the life of someone else. Best wishes to McKinze and her family from all of us at Focus Magazine. For more information, visit facebook.com/ McKinzesCrusade and bethematch.org

Local » Focus Not only would a Flying Club benefit the Lakeland community, but it would also provide safe, affordable, and accessible aircraft for local pilots. Members will pay a onetime initiation fee of $100, and reasonable monthly membership and hourly aircraft user fees. These costs will pay for insurance, hangar storage, and 100-hour maintenance inspections for the club’s planes, which is a great deal for aircraft owners who don’t fly as often. In addition, the aircraft owners associated with the club will receive compensation when members fly their planes. However, Miller believes the biggest benefit of the flying club will be its ability to mentor young pilots. “The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has been conducting research to find out why the American pilot population is decreasing,” said Miller. “It’s because we aren’t training people in this country. We want to get those people who have flown commercially or are ex-military pilots in contact with the young people coming out of the aviation academies. We will allow young people to be junior members in our club, and they will be mentored by real pilots who will help them focus on aviation as a career.” In addition, the flying club—which will be a 501(c)(7) tax-exempt corporation—will give local pilots the opportunity to cultivate aviator camaraderie. “Pilots do this thing called ‘hanger flying,’ where they get together and share stories about their experiences,” said Miller.

hen David Harbaugh left Colorado for Valrico, he was extremely excited to put his pilot’s license to use. As a flying club member at Denver’s Centennial Airport, he could travel anywhere he wanted within a two-hour radius by plane. But when he moved to Central Florida, Harbaugh realized that the Bahamas and other exotic locales were now within his two-hour radius. As a result, he immediately tried to join a flying club at the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, home of Sun N’ Fun, the second largest annual gathering of pilots and aircraft owners in the nation. Yet to

8

march 2013 focuspolkcounty.com

Harbaugh’s surprise, there wasn’t a flying club in Lakeland. “I thought I could join a club, but I got here and there wasn’t one,” said Harbaugh. “I could rent aircraft, but I could never be sure how safe that would be since I didn’t know who was doing regular maintenance.” Soon, Harbaugh met David Miller, a retired member of the U.S. Army and former aircraft owner. The two shared a similar philosophy on aviation safety and a passion for increasing the ever-decreasing American pilot population. With Harbaugh’s help,

Miller decided to create a Lakelandbased flying club, which is currently in the surveying stage with a goal of recruiting 100 pilots and eight aircraft owners. According to Miller, 93 people have shown interest so far. Miller has also received support from Sun N’ Fun President and CEO Mr. John “Lites” Leenhouts and Lakeland Airport Director Mr. Eugene Conrad. Mr. Leenhouts and Mr. Conrad believe a flying club would increase takeoffs and landings, which in turn might lead to the Federal Aviation Administration supplying more funds to the airport.

Charlie Mays, a private pilot interested in the flying club, is also excited about forming relationships with people who share his zeal for aviation: “We solve every problem in the world during those times,” stated Mays in regards to hanger flying. “It’s so much fun and actually educational.” Miller continued, “Unless you served in the military, the camaraderie among pilots is something you’ll never find anywhere else. It’s a shared love…Aviation is like a dream in that it makes you feel so free. There’s nothing like going down the runway, leaving the earth, and knowing you can go anywhere you want. Flying uses every part of your brain and every feeling. Sight, sound, smell, touch—they are all involved in flight.” If you have a passion for flying like Miller, Harbaugh, and Mays and would like to join the flying club, contact David Miller at davmil49@verizon.net or 813.789.7574 for more information.

Local » Focus “We encourage the local residents to come out to the welcome events and interact with the cyclists. Since they’re mostly from out of state, we want to let them know what Central Florida is all about and really give them a feel for the area,” said Snow. Polk County won the bid for the Bike Florida Spring Tour in summer 2012. Snow said during that time PCTSM had been working closely with the Florida Bicycle Association to promote cycling. When Bike Florida came to the FBA for suggestions of good hosts for their Spring Tour, the FBA recommended Polk County. After putting in their bid for the tour, Polk County won, ensuring the first ever Polk County Spring Tour. Since then, the PCTSM has been working with the various towns to organize all the events for the tour, including the big welcome events mentioned above, along with smaller activities that cyclists can do along the way. Becky Afonso, Bike Florida Spring Tour Ride Director, praised all the cooperation as well as Polk County’s continued support of bicycling.

Over 600 cyclists have already registered for the Bike Florida Spring Tour, and will tour various Polk County communities.

On the Road Again S trap on your helmet and start peddling because the Bike Florida Spring Tour is coming to Polk County. Bike Florida has been organizing bike tours around Florida for almost twenty years, and this year they are partnering with Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing to bring the tour to the area. The event is set for March 23-29 with cyclists traveling to many towns in Polk County, including Lakeland, Lake Wales, Bartow, Frostproof, and many more. Not only does this event promote cycle tourism, but it also brings economic and social benefits to the county. Unlike most bike tours, Bike Florida participants focus more on seeing the area and learning about the towns along the way—with their parks, restaurants, points of interests, and local events—rather than competing against each other in a bike race. “A lot of the participants are retired educators,” said Al Snow, Communications Specialist for Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing. “So they’re very interested in the history and the culture of the towns.” The event provides three different routes each day that the cyclists can choose from— usually a 20-30 mile route, a 30-50 mile

route, and a 60+ mile route—which give cyclists the opportunity to ride at their own pace and stop where they wish along the way. The tour will start in Lakeland with routes traveling to the surrounding areas and towns, then it will move through parts of Lake County, then onto Lake Wales, and finally will conclude back in Lakeland. Thus, with the event running a total of seven days with multiple routes each day, the majority of Polk County will be hosting and catering to this event. “The 2013 Bike Florida Spring Tour is a true win-win event for our region as it provides a great opportunity for Polk County to showcase our thriving arts community, our natural beauty and attractions to more than 800 cyclists from across North America” said Mark Jackson, Director of Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing. “The social and economic impact to the area will be widespread as the daily routes feature our historic downtowns and main streets which will provide the cyclists with plenty of opportunities to step off their bicycles to patronize local shops, grab a bite to eat in area restaurants and interact with local residents.” And, on top of the regular routes, a number of towns, including Lakeland, Bartow, and

Lake Wales, will be holding welcoming events for the cyclists. Snow described the events as “huge block parties.”

Currently, there are over 600 people registered for the event, and the registration deadline is March 8. If you are interested in registering or even just finding out more, visit bikeflorida.org.

Polk County was chosen as the site for this year’s Bike Florida tour because of it’s growing relationship with the Florida Bicycle Association.

V i va F lo r i da ! Polk County Celebrates

500 Years By Valerie McCutcheon

The year 2013 marks an important milestone for Florida: 500 years ago, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León stepped ashore onto a land he named La Florida, and claimed it for Spain. Although Florida’s Native American heritage spans more than 12,000 years prior to Ponce de León’s April 2, 1513 arrival, Spain’s claim began a new era. A yearlong, statewide celebration, Viva Florida 500 is an initiative of the Florida Department of State commemorating and highlighting the 500 years of Florida’s Spanish Colonial history and the different cultures (including Native American) that have shaped Florida and contributed to its diverse heritage. According to the Department of State, “The 500th anniversary provides a unique opportunity to strengthen tourism, spur economic development and educate the world about the state’s significant history and heritage.” Polk County’s recognition of the anniversary is being spearheaded by Ana Rivera and Rafael Torres, President/Founder and incoming Vice President of the Puerto Rican Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Polk County (PRHCCPC). Focus Magazine had the opportunity to sit down with the pair to discuss their celebration plans, as well as the vision of the Chamber and its dreams for the future. Rivera, who was born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City, moved to Lakeland in 2002 after September 11. She founded the Chamber in 2007 in order to fill a growing need in the Polk County area. “There was the Metro Orlando Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Tampa Latin Chamber, but nothing along the I-4 corridor, or the ‘bellybutton,’ as I call it,” laughed Rivera. Originating with just six members, the Chamber just celebrated its fifth anniversary and is now comprised of approximately 106 members of the Hispanic/Non Hispanic business community in Polk County. “Our mission is to educate with culture, and then to mentor and empower small businesses. We want to share our passion and let people know that we’re here!” A bipartisan, not-for-profit 501(c)(6) organization, the PRHCC works closely with local Puerto Rican, Hispanic as well as nonHispanic members of the educational, cultural, business community in order to

the Division of Negro Affairs. The lesson was presented by Ersula Odom-McLemore, an author, essayist, Florida Humanities Council Mary McLeod Bethune Road Scholar, and motivational speaker.

In December of 2011, Rivera and the Puerto Rican Hispanic Chamber of Commerce were presented with a proclamation from the Polk County Board of County Commissioners recognizing their importance as an organization and an “integral catalyst in the growth of commerce and tourism within the Hispanic and non-Hispanic in Polk County,” empowering the Chamber to celebrate the 500th anniversary through a cultural and commercial campaign within Polk County and the State of Florida. Rivera’s vision for what the Viva Florida 500 event will bring to Polk County aligns with the Department of State’s: creating events to honor Florida’s history and heritage will generate new tourism opportunities long after the celebration ends in 2013. “I not only want this event to draw people here, but to keep them here,” says Rivera. “So many Hispanic organizations throughout the state are creating opportunities for growth with these special events in their communities, so why should Polk County miss out? It’s a chance to bring in revenue to our community, as well as let people know that we’re here and that we’re growing. The Hispanic community here was a major factor in this past election, so we really do have a voice.”

The Polk County History Center’s newest exhibit, “Spanish Pathways,” also complements the Viva Florida 500 Celebration by highlighting the historical relationship between Florida and Spain. The History Center is located at 100 East Main Street in downtown Bartow, admission is free and hours are 9 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Friday, and 9 am to 3 pm Saturday (closed Sundays and Mondays). For more information on the parade and block party, including information on securing booth space, call 863-838-2084. No other state can claim 500 years of history and diverse cultural heritage, so don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate the Florida we live in today!

The PRHCCPC’s main event will be the Lakeland’s first Hispanic parade to be held in Downtown Lakeland, followed by a block party, from 12 to 7 pm on Sunday, April 7. The Hispanic television station Univision is a sponsor of this event. Although not specifically affiliated with the PRHCCPC, the Winter Haven Public Library has been offering programming throughout the year to celebrate the 500th Anniversary as well. In January, Carrie Sue Ayvar, a third generation award-winning storyteller presented “Stories of Florida - Con Sabor!” A bilingual presentation, she wove personal, historical and traditional Florida stories together in an effort to connect the people and cultures of Florida. This event was sponsored by the Florida Humanities council and the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs. February’s presentation focused on the Life and Legacy of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, a child of former slaves turned educator and activist, and founder of Bethune-Cookman College. Restoring Lives, Empowering Community Interview by Katie Reilly | Photos courtesy of Dream Center of Lakeland

Teen girls enjoying the Dream Center’s Girls’ Night Out ministry

Located on the corner of Fifth and Kettles off Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the Dream Center of Lakeland is one place that should not go overlooked. Each day, the nonprofit community center serves as an outlet of hope for children, teenagers, young adults, and seniors in the community. Focus Magazine recently sat down with executive director Michael Cooper and programs director Steve Hill to learn a little more about them, the Center, and some of the programs they are running to help the community around them. FOCUS Magazine: Where are you originally from? Michael Cooper: I’m originally from Old Town, Maryland. Steve Hill: And I’m from Ohio. Louisville, Ohio. FOCUS: What first brought you to Lakeland? MC: The opportunity to come and do ministry. We actually started by working in Carpenters Home Church then, through the Lord’s direction, we moved to Victory, and now we’re at the center. SH: I was a Southeastern student, and I partnered with Pastor Michael when he was over at Carpenters. And I’ve just been around since then.

Adopt-a-Block volunteers helping out a Kid’s Club, a high energy kids service for children in the community.

The Rock is a mentoring basketball league for middle and high school guys. Coaches meet with teams before and after games each week to discuss life issues and use sports to show the importance of teamwork, character, and integrity.

FOCUS: How did you meet? SH: We met through Southeastern’s practicum and internship program. I was placed under Pastor Mike as a kind of a mentor. He’s been a blessing. He has an incredible heart for God and for seeing people touched. And that connected, and I’ve enjoyed it very much. FOCUS: How did the Lakeland Dream Center start? MC: It first started in 2000/2001, and back then it was called the Freedom Center. We’ve been running this center full time for the last three years. We changed the name probably in the last year and a half to the Dream Center. We needed a fresh start. The Freedom Center was an entity focused mostly on after school programs. We do more out in the community. SH: Yeah, I mean as far as the start, it was something that was here before we got here, but it’s developed into the Dream Center in the last three years between Pastor Mike and some organizations and churches that have been willing to get behind it and see that happen. It was just a natural transition. FOCUS: And what made you make the transition between working in the church to working at the Dream Center? MC: Well, when I was up at Carpenters I did evangelism. I’ve always been involved more in FOCUS Magazine polk county march 2013

outreach. This is more of a natural thing. When this opportunity came up, it was just a natural thing to do. I think it all goes back to many years ago coaching college basketball. I was always dealing with urban kids. So I think that it was kind of a natural thing to come here. And it was a good ministry opportunity because even though it existed eight/nine years ahead of time, I think it was ready for somebody to come in, think new, and just do it differently. I can’t say that I saw myself doing this ten years ago, but man makes his plans, and God directs the steps. I don’t even think Steve saw himself doing this five or six years ago. SH: No, it wouldn’t have been what I thought, but it’s the right thing. It worked out. FOCUS: What are some of the different ministries that happen here? MC: One of the first ones to get kicked off was called “Girls Night Out.” And that’s been running about seven years now total. That was started by Tiffany; she’s been with us for a long while. Then we have a program once a week, where about ten Southeastern education majors come out to help the kids from the community. It’s good because it not only helps the kids, but it also gives the Southeastern students some experience without all the classroom pressure. Then we have “The Rock,” a basketball league that targets middle to high school kids. We also have services both on Wednesdays and Sundays. Both of them are built around a meal, and we aim to build community—both with them and with all the other programs we do. So, we have a lot of different activities that we can always get more volunteers. FOCUS: Tell me more about the Adopt a Block program. MC: On the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month we do what we call Adopt a Block. We have a number of teams right now that will go out on those Saturdays to the same block area and build a relationship with the people. If there’s need for food or need for clothing, the teams will come back here where we have stockpile storage, and they take whatever the things are out to the people who need them. We also have lawnmowers so that the teams can mow their grass. They can cut, brush, paint, basically do whatever they need to do to really connect in that area. What we’re trying to do is have everything here so when people come out to Adopt a Block all they’ll have to do is go out and do whatever needs to be done on the block. For example, if they want to have a cookout we’ll hopefully have the supplies in house where they can come and just take the grill out there to do hotdogs or hamburgers. We really want them to connect in these neighborhoods. So we’re trying to develop more and more teams to do that now. We can always get more volunteers for this, particularly more churches. FOCUS: And what do you see as the biggest needs of the Dream Center? MC: I think just overall church community involvement, where the church community really comes in and partners with us. And that can be financially as well as with volunteers. SH: Yeah, having a strong church community base makes an enormous difference. We’ve seen the value of telling a community that they’re worth something. And even with regards to the non- spiritual side, letting people know that there is a value to their life and that they can take ownership in their community and see it as something important—if we can see that develop and the Adopt a Block grow, that would be incredible. Also, educators. If we could partner with some experienced educators that have a heart for working with students in underprivileged areas, that’s something that would help us right now too. FOCUS: How can people get involved? SH: It’s easier to get involved initially with the Adopt a Block because as we start to work with programs with minors there’s, of course, background checks and stuff there. First, if somebody is interested they can read through all the programs and upcoming outreaches on our website dreamcenterlakeland.org. Then the best way to actually plug into those programs is if they go to the contact page and send us an email. That way we can contact them and give them the information. We’ll always have information about dates, outreaches, and programs that people can help with.

NOW OFFERING PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY! For 41 years the Busciglio Family has been creating picture perfect smiles! Dr. John Busciglio began the family legacy in 1972 when he opened the first fulltime orthodontic practice in the Brandon area. As he retired this year, his children, Drs. Derek and Dana Busciglio, have picked up where their father left off. They will oversee Busciglio Smiles offices in Brandon and Plant City and just opened practice in FishHawk Ranch, 16321 FishHawk Boulevard, Lithia. The Busciglios and their staff held a grand opening event and fund-raiser a few months ago featuring the Newsome High School Marching Band led by Christian Finch. With the help of the MOMS Club of Lithia-Bevis, the office held a raffle for Invisalign braces, raising $2,560 for new uniforms for the band. There’s no sibling rivalry between this brother and sister. In fact, they’re more than willing to boast about one another’s accomplishments. After 12 years of schooling, Dr. Dana has earned a Dental Degree, a Pediatric Dental degree, an Orthodontic Degree and is Board Certified in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Dana is equally proud of her brother’s role as Invisalign’s Sunshine Regional Educator. Busciglio Smiles was the first “elite provider” for Invisalign in eastern Hillsborough County. “We have remarkable results with this aesthetic option for straightening teeth,” said Derek Busciglio, who, like his sister, received his degree in dentistry and orthodontics from the prestigious Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. “When Invisalign first entered the market in 1999, my dad was one of the first practitioners to use the system. Now we are taking It to the next level in terms of treatment types and results.” It’s not just teens who are seeking this clear alternative to straightening teeth. “We also treat a lot of adults, probably 30 percent of our practice,” he said. He said the cost is comparable to traditional braces. However, the treatment time with Invisalign averages 12-15 months, as compared to the 18-24 months required for regular braces. It’s not just teens who are seeking this clear alternative to braces. The Busciglios also are committed to educating children on good oral health with the help of the “tooth fairy.” Complete with wings and fairy dust, certified dental and orthodontic assistant Christine Freeman provides tooth fairy visits to schools and children’s parties, presenting educational skits and handing out goody bags containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, a floss threader, toothbox, stickers and a bracelet.

Florida Strawberry Festival

Kay Varnum

Associate Director - Florida Strawberry Festival® Written by Cheryl Johnston

Kay Varnum thoroughly enjoys her role as an Associate Director of the Florida Strawberry Festival®, one she’s embraced since her election in 2002. “I just love being with the people of the Festival,” said the Plant City native and former Strawberry Festival Queen (1985). “Katie” grew up in a family whose roots run deep in agriculture and education. Varnum, a stay-at-home mom, is the daughter of Joe and Velma Newsome, and has been married 24 years to husband Scott. Their three children have been involved with showing livestock at the Festival over the years. Mitchell, 22, and Claybo, 19, both attend Florida Southern College, and daughter Jessi Rae, 17, is a Durant High School junior, FFA member and cheerleader. Both Scott and son Claybo coach football at DHS as well.

The Florida Strawberry Festival® organization is managed and governed by the unpaid board of 16 directors and 14 associate directors, with assistance from only a few year-round, paid staffers. Replacements are selected when a director resigns to become a director emeritus or passes away. Directors and associate directors serve on committees to accomplish the necessary work that results in the Festival’s continuing success. “To be nominated and elected for this position is a great honor,” said Varnum. “I have enjoyed seeing how much the Festival has evolved - it just gets better and better each year.”

Each year, everyone in Plant City looks forward to the annual competition to become the next Florida Strawberry Festival Queen. The pageant is a major fundraiser for the Plant City Lions Club, and once the Queen has been crowned, she and her court are passed to the Florida Strawberry Festival to begin a whirlwind of shopping for the clothes they’ll wear, attending events, making guest appearances, and speaking with the media to promote the Florida Strawberry Festival. Each year, we’re so fortunate to find 5 young ladies that will best represent Plant City and the Florida Strawberry Festival, and each year we find ourselves wondering if we can find 5 young ladies that are as good as the previous year – and we do. I recently had a few minutes with this year’s Florida Strawberry Festival Queen, Kelsey Fry. Focus: Where did you get the interest in competing for Strawberry Queen? Fry: We first moved to Plant City when I was in the eighth grade. I immediately realized that I was eligible to compete for Strawberry Queen. My dad would ask if I wanted to move to Plant City or stay in Brandon, but I definitely wanted to be in Plant City. Competing for Strawberry Queen was just something I always wanted to do. Focus: What was the toughest aspect of preparing for the competition? Fry: Preparing for the interview with the judges, and not being worried about it. I worked with a coach about 4 times, and my mom would ask me random questions while we were driving in the car. I’d answer, and then she’d say, “Ok, now make sure you say that in your interview.” Focus: Share with me your overall experience from the night of the competition. Fry: My experience was probably a lot different from the other girls. I had a terrible cold. I was dying back stage. But I think it helped, because I wasn’t stressing out about everything. I was too worried about getting tissues when I needed them. I kept telling myself, ‘Don’t cough. Don’t cough.’ And I could feel a cough coming. But I made it through. I remember getting off stage and just coughing away. The whole experience of being on stage and doing your walk was nice. I could hear people cheering, and during the evening wear portion everyone gets to wear the dress that they love so much, and everyone gets to see it. So that was fun.

Focus: Was there a memorable moment for you, aside from being crowned? Fry: When they called us down for the top 10, and we entered the stage from the audience, that was nice because I could finally see the people I know without the glare of the stage lights. It was really nice to see people and know that they were there for me. I was able to hear my swim team yelling for me, and when I was in the audience getting ready for the top 10, I could finally see where they were sitting. They were literally in the back corner of the bleachers. Focus: Have you competed in any other pageants? Fry: I did Calendar Girl once and I was selected for Miss March. That was my junior year of high school. I competed in Strawberry Queen last year and made it into the top ten, but that’s all my pageant experience. Focus: So describe what life has been like in the two short weeks you’ve been Strawberry Queen. Fry: I thought I was busy before, and now I’ve realized that I wasn’t busy at all. I know that people recognize me more, now. I go into Publix and people will say, “Oh my gosh. You’re Kelsey Fry.” That’s pretty cool. People seem to know my name now and that’s just fun. Focus: So what kinds of things have you done in these first two weeks? Fry: We’ve been to three shopping malls and closed them every time. I think we’re done with our shopping now. I think we’ve spent all of our money. It didn’t take long. Focus: So what is next on your schedule? Fry: We have the Taste of Florida breakfast and the Governor’s Luncheon later that day. We also have the Celebrity Chef Dinner coming up. Focus: What are you looking forward to most about the Florida Strawberry Festival? Fry: I’m really looking forward to experiencing the festival from a different perspective. I’ve been to the festival every year of my life, and it should be a lot of fun to experience it this year as Strawberry Queen. We’ll get to not only see the parade, but also be in the parade. I’ve never done that before. So it’s just going to be a great experience. Focus: Which entertainer are you most excited to see? Fry: Scotty McCreary. I called it. I called it when he was on American Idol. As soon as I saw his audition I said, ‘He’s gonna win.’ I watched American Idol that season basically for him. I’m also looking forward to seeing Casting Crowns. I’ve seen them before and they put on a great concert. And of course, Martina McBride because she’s perfect. Focus: If you wanted to give advice to girls competing for Strawberry Queen next year, what advice would you give them? Fry: Don’t stress out over it. Don’t work so much to prepare that you don’t have fun and your answers are rehearsed. Just have fun and be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not.

Focus: Is there anything that you’re nervous about as Strawberry Queen? Fry: No, I don’t really get nervous. Maybe the polka dancing. I’ve heard that they sling you around everywhere. Focus: What does your family think about all of this? Fry: My sisters have worn my crown around the house more than I have ever worn the crown. My sister was sitting on the couch one morning eating a bowl of cereal, and wearing the crown. I asked her, ‘Do you really need to wear that all the time?’ My dad likes it. He’s always been a great support for me. Last year, when I competed, I was told I could have one try at Calendar Girl and one try at Strawberry Queen, and I had to pick which years I was going to compete for each of them. I wanted to compete in both of them my junior year and I remember after making it to the top 10, but not making it into the court, my dad said, “Well, you can do it again next year if you want to.” [Laughing] So he caved. My mom is just so, so, happy. Everyone in Plant City has called her. So she’s been on the phone a lot talking to everyone. She’s just excited to be there to help us when we need it. She’s taken tons of pictures already. Focus: Tell me about your plans after you graduate this year? Fry: I have been recruited by the University of West Florida, in Pensacola. So I will be swimming for them. I’m a sprinter, so I swim the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free, and I also compete in the relays. I like swimming a lot and I’ve been swimming competitively for about 4 years, which really isn’t a lot compared to everyone else on my team who have been doing it their entire lives. Focus: Do you know what you want to study in college? Fry: Yes, Marketing. I’d like to focus on the agriculture side of marketing. I’d like to come back to Plant City and use what I’ve learned to help other businesses. Focus: Where did you get the interest in agricultural marketing? Fry: Obviously Plant City is known for its agriculture. My dad is in the agriculture business, so that’s probably what inspired me. Focus: And why would you like to come back to Plant City? There are a lot of other towns with agriculture. Fry: Plant City just feels different from everywhere else. You can visit other towns and they’re nice, but they just don’t have the same feel that Plant City does. Plant City has its own distinct way of doing things, and I just love everything about it. Kelsey was a joy to speak with. She’s beautiful, full of energy, sweet, smiles constantly and will represent Plant City very well this year. If you have the opportunity, introduce yourself to her. There’s no doubt she’ll smile and tell you how nice it was to meet you. Congratulations, Kelsey. We hope you have a wonderful year as our 2013 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen.

Focus: Which high school are you attending? Lott: Plant City. Focus: Which year are you in? Lott: I’m a junior. Focus: What are your plans after high school? Lott: I plan to attend a 4-year college, and that will depend on where I get accepted. I want to major in photography. My mom picked up photography a few years ago. She got a really nice camera, so I started messing around with it, and Stephanie Humphrey takes photos with our family and she inspired me to pursue it. I’ve played soccer my whole life but I think I’m getting to the point of wanting to play it more recreationally than competitively, so I don’t think I’ll be playing soccer in college. I think my life is leading me down a different path. Focus: How long have you been interested in competing to be the Florida Strawberry Queen? Lott: I’d never done a pageant before. Two years ago, I’d have never pictured myself in this position. I have brothers and played sports. I’ve been more on the Tom-boy side. Everyone knows that. My mom convinced me to do Calendar Girl in September. I did, and I had a lot of fun and I won Calendar Girl. So we talked about Strawberry Queen and decided I’d do it. Focus: What was a memorable experience for you from the pageant? Lott: It was really fast. I was really nervous for the interview. I was shaking and so scared. I didn’t know these people, and just walking into a room and knowing that these people are going to judge everything I do was a little intimidating. But once I got in there, it was so much fun. The judges had a great time. They were just normal people. They weren’t trying to beat me or catch me on anything. It was a great experience and it helped me to know that doing a pageant isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being yourself and being able to represent Plant City. Focus: What are you looking forward to next? Lott: There are so many things planned for us, but I guess I’m looking forward to the entertainment at the Strawberry Festival, like Hunter Hayes, Justin Moore and of course, Blake Shelton.

Focus: Which high school are you attending? Astin: Durant. Focus: Which year are you in? Astin: I’m a senior. Focus: What are your plans after high school? Astin: I’ve been accepted to the University of Tampa. I plan to attend in the fall and major in Business Marketing, and hopefully earn my Masters degree. I’ve grown up on a family farm, and a lot goes into the business portion of owning a strawberry farm, so I’d like to help out in marketing the berries. Focus: How long have you been interested in competing to be the Florida Strawberry Queen? Astin: I have been to so many pageants over the years, and was always in awe of them. I’ve had aunts and cousins that competed, my mom competed and one of my aunts actually won Strawberry Queen. So it’s just been something that I’ve always looked forward to pretty much my whole life. It’s such an honor. It’s not just about being on the court, but about being able to represent Plant City. Focus: What was a memorable experience for you from the pageant? Astin: I just had a fun time. I got to do the pageant with my best friend, Emily Gonzalez. It was a lot of fun. We had our mirrors decorated, we were on the same side of the room to get dressed and we got to help each other. So it was just a lot of fun to do the pageant with her. Focus: What are you looking forward to next? Astin: I’m excited about being part of the Strawberry Festival family; making new friends, meeting new people. I’m just looking forward to being someone that people will look up to.

Focus: Which high school are you attending? Keene: Plant City. Focus: Which year are you in? Keene: I’m a junior. Focus: What are your plans after high school? Keene: I’m undecided about what I want to pursue. I know I want to go to a major university, and I think that Chemical Engineering could be good for me. I really enjoy science and it’s the subject I really enjoy learning about. I’ve had a really great teacher for the past two years. I also have a new Physics teacher this year. Both of my teachers have just been so good. They make me want to learn. Focus: How long have you been interested in competing to be the Florida Strawberry Queen? Keene: I just always remember seeing the Strawberry Queen and Court when I went to the festival or went to the parade and thought, ‘Wow! That would be so awesome.’ But I never really put a lot of thought to it, because I’m just not a pageant-type of girl. Then I did Calendar Girl and it was a lot of fun, so I decided that I wanted to do Strawberry Queen. I knew it would be such an honor if I were selected to the court. Focus: What was a memorable experience for you from the pageant? Keene: When we were in the sound proof room, which was really the RV parked next to the building, watching the girls trying to get up the narrow stairs in our big dresses was funny. Focus: What are you looking forward to next? Keene: I’m looking forward to seeing the festival from the other side curtain; from behind the scenes.

Focus: Which high school are you attending? Townsend: Strawberry Crest. Focus: Which year are you in? Townsend: I’m a senior. Focus: What are your plans after high school? Townsend: I want to play colligate volleyball, hopefully at Saint Leo University. I’m actually going there for an overnight visit with the team, so that will be a deciding factor. I want to major in International Business because I want the global background. After I graduate from Saint Leo, I’d like to attend the University of Florida to study Environmental Law. I’ve grown up in agriculture and people have always asked me if I wanted to be a farmer when I grow up. I want to stay in agriculture, but I think that job security can be sketchy with a lot of the agriculture industry. So I think that Environmental Law will give me a way to work in agriculture if I want to, or I can use my International Business degree to focus on Environmental Law from a global perspective Focus: How long have you been interested in competing to be the Florida Strawberry Queen? Townsend: I was actually a contestant in the Little Miss Plant City when I was in the fifth grade. I got in the court that year and we did appearances at some of the local events. We’d see the Strawberry Queen and Court and we’d look up to them. So I can remember when we were on stage at the end of our year and the announcer said, “This is going to be the Strawberry Queen and Court one day.” So then I always wanted to move up to the big girl court. Focus: What was a memorable experience for you from the pageant? Townsend: During the interview, the judges noticed in my bio that I show beef cattle at the festival, so they wanted me to tell them about it. One of the judges asked, “What’s a heifer?” I explained that it’s a female cow that hasn’t had a baby. After they have a baby, they’re just a cow. Then it gets a little more awkward and he asks, “And a male is?” I explained that a male that has not been castrated is a bull and a male that has been castrated is a steer. So they all laughed. Then later, one of the female judges asked, “What’s FFA?” They all laughed at her and she said, “Well at least I knew what a heifer was.” It was just funny. Focus: What are you looking forward to next? Townsend: I’m looking forward to the baby parade. I love seeing all the cute babies, and I think it’s one of the chances for us to really interact with the community on a large scale. And some of those children could be future Strawberry Queens.

PLANT CITY CRAZY ABOUT STRAWBERRIES Written by Amanda Deck

It’s not a secret Plant City residents love their strawberries—the strawberry crop is the heart and soul of the community. For example, not only is Plant City home to the annual Florida Strawberry Festival, but it’s considered the “Winter Strawberry Capital of the World.” Plant City’s mild winter climate and sandy soil makes it about the only place in the United States that can produce a strawberry crop during the winter months, making the succulent fruit a vital part of the local economy.

production, supporting over 200 million plants which produce over 300 million pounds of berries throughout a four-month harvesting period, from early December to April.

“Strawberries support tens of thousands of local jobs,” said Campbell, “ranging from truck drivers to chemical sales, capital equipment, refrigeration repair, cooler and farm personnel, irrigation equipment, hardware, vehicles, boxes, pallets, plastic packaging, labeling, accounting, legal “Strawberries contribute almost 45 services, the Festival, and much, much percent of Hillsborough’s AG value— more. Plant City would be devastated now approaching $400 million,” said without strawberries.” Florida Strawberry Growers Association Executive Director Ted Campbell. “When Therefore, with thousands of jobs relying you translate that into economic impact, on a successful strawberry crop each year it more than doubles, so strawberries are throughout Hillsborough County, it’s contributing nearly a billion dollars to our no wonder why Plant City is crazy about strawberries. local economy.” Each year, over 11,000 acres of Plant City land are dedicated solely to strawberry crop

Strawberry Fun Facts An Unknown Origin

According to legend, strawberries were named by 19th century English children who picked the fruit, strung them on grass straws, and sold them as “straws of berries,” while a different naming theory suggests 19th century farmers placed piles of straw around the growing berries to keep them fresh. However, the most widely accepted view is that strawberries were originally named “strewn berries,” as the berries were “strewn” about on the plants. Over time, “strewn berry” morphed into “strawberry.”

Inspirational Indians

Native Americans, who called strawberries “heart-seed berries” for their unique shape, mixed pounded strawberries into their cornmeal bread. After tasting this delicious native staple, colonists created their own version, now known as strawberry shortcake.

Straw…berry?

Botanists do not classify the strawberry as a true berry like the blueberry and cranberry which have seeds on the inside. In fact, an average size strawberry is covered in about 200 dry yellow seeds and is a member of the rose family.

An Interesting History

During medieval times, the English and French decorated their gardens with strawberries. The most prominent royal garden belonged to King Charles V of 14th century France which was comprised of over 1,200 strawberry plants. In addition, Madame Tallien, a member of Napoleon’s court used to bathe in fresh strawberry juice. Finally, 13th century newlyweds in France ate strawberry soup, as it was thought to be an aphrodisiac.

A Sporting Tradition

Almost 60,000 pounds of strawberries are eaten during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships each year, along with over 236,700 ounces of cream.

Fan Favorite

According to a survey conducted by the University of Illinois, over 53 percent of 7- to 9- year-olds chose the strawberry as their favorite fruit. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Agriculture calculated that the annual per capita consumption of fresh and frozen strawberries is 4.85 pounds.

Versatile Fruit

Although the United States is composed of several different climate regions from the cool, rainy northwest to the hot and humid southeast, strawberries are grown in every U.S. state—and every Canadian province! In fact, there are more than 600 varieties of strawberries in existence.

Berries Galore!

The 20 million strawberry flats produced each year, if placed end to end, would extend from Plant City to Seattle and back again.

In addition, customers can also create fused glass jewelry and tile mosaics at PicassoZ. “Our customers are so awesome,” said Miller. “We say we’ve seen it all, but we’re always ‘wowed’ by people who feel free to express themselves here. It’s like Christmas every time we open the kiln. It’s so fun to work here because every day is different.”

PicassoZ Art Café, Tea Largo Beverage Co. and Teaki Bars Three Unique Brands Under One Fun Roof

Whether on a first date or enjoying a fun night out with friends and family, PicassoZ is a great alternative to the typical weekend hangout spots like the local movie theaters and restaurants. In addition, their large party room is perfect for field trips, sorority events, corporate team building activities, birthday parties, and bridal showers. “You name it, we host it,” said Miller. Although not an artist herself, Miller established PicassoZ, Tea Largo, and Teaki Bars with one thing in mind, to offer something for people who aren’t artists to have a good time building relationships with family and friends in a community-oriented atmosphere.

icassoZ Art Café, located in Lakeland’s Lakeside Village, has featured a coffee bar since it opened a little over 10 years ago. But when owner Kristin Miller discovered loose leaf tea in Naples while on vacation, she immediately knew it was something she wanted to introduce to the Lakeland community. As a result, Miller transformed PicassoZ’s large party room into a tea shop and, in 2007, Tea Largo Beverage Co. was born. Apart from providing the finest top-shelf loose leaf tea brands, Tea Largo sells hot, iced, and frozen drinks including fruit smoothies, bubble teas with tapioca pearls, tea lattes, hot cocoa, and much more. Yet Miller is most excited about bringing Matcha to Polk County, a Japanese green tea and super food boasting health benefits that are off the charts. In summer 2012, Miller invented yet another genius brand—Teaki Bars, handmade ice pops utilizing popular flavors from her unique tea shop. Teaki Bars has grown immensely and is already a hit in the Lakeland area. Although

sold at Tea Largo, by purchasing a truck and a food cart, Miller has been able to show off her new product at various parks and events, including the monthly downtown Lakeland Food Truck Rallies. From Dark Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake and Blueberry Coconut to Strawberry Basil and Avocado Mojito, there’s a Teaki Bar to satisfy any taste palate. “The success of Tea Largo and Teaki Bars has been amazing and has really helped us through the recession since PicassoZ is so seasonal. The tea shop and ice pops have been a nice complement,” said Miller. After purchasing a beverage or Teaki Bar from Tea Largo, head next door to PicassoZ, a do-ityourself art studio featuring pottery painting. From piggy banks to dinosaurs, ice cream bowls to Disney princesses, PicassoZ has a ceramic craft available for every personality. A $6.50 studio fee covers all painting, glazing, and firing costs, which is added to the individual price of each pottery piece. Surfaces range from $5 for small ornaments to over $100 for very large items. However, the most popular

“We are excited to still be growing after all these years and touch on new trends, like the ice pops, which has basically become our third business. But they all work together. I’m very happy with our Lakeside Village location and enjoy each new season,” said Miller.

Let’s FOCUS on Fishing Written By: Capt. Eladio Picon, Epic Fishing Charters

of the day. After a few more hook ups, we decided to deploy the Wang Anchor to stop our drift and concentrate our efforts to our newfound “Honey Hole”. We fished the hole for a while, landing multiple small trout and then decided to move out of the area as soon as Ladyfish invaded the spot. On the move for better fish, we scouted several patches over Point Pinellas and Boca Ciega Bay. Every single spot resulted in a feeding frenzy of oversized Ladyfish, which were a lot Captain Eladio Picon of Epic Fishing Charters Photo by: Joseph Roberts

O

n February 15, I had the opportunity to go fishing with John Rush from Boots N Buckles Saloon in Lakeland and Joey Roberts from FOCUS Magazine. The day started with a little bit of rain, cool water and low air temps. Since cold fronts changed the game in Tampa Bay, the fish were on the move and really finicky, so we knew it was going to be one of those unpredictable days of fishing. Winter fishing requires some extra patience as well as a nice warm jacket. We departed from O’Neill’s Marina in St. Petersburg to our first stop near the Ft. De Soto area, armed with our usual inshore arsenal composed mainly of DOA Deadly Combo, DOA Shad Tails, DOA Jig heads, as well as MirrOlure MIrrOdines, a bait bucket full of live shrimp, and assorted pompano jigs. Upon arrival we decided to drift the grass flats and sand patches of the fishing grounds. And just a few minutes into it…boom…Rush’s Epic Custom Rod scored the first Sea trout

of fun to catch, but not our targeted species. A few more trout appearances on the reel of Mr. Rush spiked our hopes of better fish. As the morning warmed up and the water temperatures reached the high 60s, the bite was on. But when an invasion of Ladyfish kept us from reaching our target species, we decided to switch to our Pompano jigs and scored a few of those Pelagic fighters, which eventually found their way into the cooler. Roberts enjoyed a couple of those fights

armed with an “Inshore Series” Epic Custom Rod with MHX White Blanks. A lonely Spanish mackerel also decided to join the games; at that point we lost count on the fish tally, as we brought in fish after fish. Our trip came to the end a little bit after the middle of the day. Rush and Roberts had experienced firsthand a decent day of fishing. Even though the conditions that day were not near normal, the fish decided to cooperate and provided our anglers a few hours of excitement and fun in the beautiful waters of Tampa Bay. Back at the marina both anglers took home their catch and their trip experiences for later enjoyment and sharing with their families.

Woody’s BBQ I f you think you know Woody’s BarB-Q, get ready for an all new experience! Woody’s Bar-B-Q of Winter Haven has spent nearly 20 years in the same location on Havendale Boulevard, but is now under new ownership and has an updated menu to go along with its $50,000 renovation.

The exterior beckons with a new brick façade and a charming takeout window. Gone are the booths with tall backs obstructing views; they have been replaced with tables and booths with comfy benches, giving the space an open and friendly look. With brick accents, vintage signs adorning the walls and colorful light fixtures, the look has been updated tenfold. New owners Mark Sharratt and Nicholas Hart bought the franchise and opened it in September 2012, working through the night to renovate the place themselves while keeping the restaurant open under construction. Hailing from the United Kingdom, the duo brings many years of overseas restaurant experience to the operation. And don’t let the British accents fool you; they can do Southern barbecue! “We chose the franchise because it’s a structured operation, and Woody’s has been around 32 years and they understand quality. We’ve made quite a few changes to the menu, and now smoke everything daily so it’s always fresh,” says Sharratt. We can attest to the quality of their smoked meats! The owners brought us out a sampler platter of their best barbecued offerings,

letting us try their pulled pork, Memphis style spare ribs, smoked turkey breast, Texas beef brisket, half a chicken, and our personal favorite, Woody’s Signature Baby Back Ribs. “It’s definitely our most popular offering,” agree Sharratt and Hart. Served in half or full racks, fall-off-the-bone tender isn’t an exaggeration. Slow cooked in Woody’s secret recipe marinade, then grilled and basted with even more marinade, they are generously meaty and mouthwatering. The Memphis style spare ribs are larger and smokier than the tangy baby backs, and seasoned with Woody’s award winning rub, are nice and filling. The half a chicken is a huge portion of barbecue chicken marinated in their special sauce, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The smoked turkey was moist and flavorful, and the brisket sliced thick and tender. Their Carolina style pulled pork just melts in your mouth. These meats were accompanied by a quartet of sauces: Southern Sweet, Tangy Mustard, Smokin’ Hot, and Carolina BBQ. Take home a bottle of Southern Sweet or Tangy Mustard for just $4.99. With unique appetizers like Awesome Squash (lightly breaded), Corn Nuggets, and fried okra, a variety of salads (including a 3-Meat Salad topped with pork, beef and smoked turkey breast), and inventive sandwiches (we’re eyeing the Hawaiian BarB-Q burger with grilled pineapple and pork on a steak burger for our next visit), there’s something for everyone.
