As 2010 draws to an end, Focus wanted to check the pulse of our business community and see what 2011 may hold. We turned to the voice of the business community, the Chamber of Commerce and its recently installed President, Cindy Price. She talks about what the chamber has accomplished, new programs they are beginning and what she sees for 2011.
Hartman’s Guns & Ammo offers fantastic service and fantastic buys for these and much more. Coin collectors love Hartman’s, too. Don’t miss this chance to find the perfect Christmas gift for your outdoor lovers.

was watching TV the other night and an eBay commercial came on, but not what you would usually expect. They showed several home videos of little kids having complete meltdowns of excitement on Christmas morning. They were asking people to go online and upload their Christmas outbursts. We’ve all witnessed those moments when Santa brings the little one exactly what he/she asked for and they proceed to use all of their energy to express their excitement. I’ve seen the screaming, dancing, jumping, but my favorite has got to be when my son was around four. He got the toy he really wanted from Santa and just fell to the floor flailing his arms and legs as if he was having a temper tantrum but he was just so excited he didn’t know what else to do. Looking back on my childhood I can remember several occasions where I begged Santa for the things on my wish list and later opened them on Christmas morning. At the time, it seemed like nothing else mattered. That is, until you grow up. At some point that excitement and rush of ripping apart the paper to see what is underneath begins fading. What fades even more is how we express our excitement. You begin to mentally define gifts as thoughtful, expensive, or other terms that don’t matter at age four. For many adults, that rush doesn’t come when receiving, but rather giving. As an adult, who really looks forward to writing out a wish list for the in-laws who keep persisting you make one? It always feels like such a dreadful task that I usually avoid doing it at all. However, as parents, it’s exciting to write out that list for the kids. You start imagining how your daughter will react when she gets her new dollhouse or kitchen set, or how your son will respond to his new remote controlled flying airplane. It’s a thrill to plan, and then such a fulfilling experience to watch them tear through the presents that morning with pure joy on their faces. Cindy Price can understand the “feel good” that comes with altruism. Cindy is the new President of the Chamber of Commerce and has been voluntarily working for years to make Winter Haven a better community. Read the full interview with her in this month’s issue to get an idea of the hard work the chamber has been doing. I’m sure Cindy can relate similar exhilarations of joy when her and other individuals got the official news that Legoland was going to build in Winter Haven after much hard work to bring them in. There are charities galore in our community who are hard at work to make our community even stronger. As you begin writing out your list of everyone you need to buy for this holiday season, make sure you reference the Holiday Shopping Guide. Local, small businesses are the best place to find a variety of unique ideas for everyone in your life. There are so many great ideas for this holiday season. Make sure you support our businesses and shop local this Christmas!

21st Winter Haven Hospital Foundation Annual Gala H Written By: Brent Simmons
ow important is having the best medical personnel, the latest medical equipment, and the right medical facilities to our community, to your health? That is the purpose of the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation. The foundation raises money to support Winter Haven Hospital, The Regency Center for Women & Infants, and many other facilities and services in our community. One night a year they raise the roof at their Annual Gala.
The black tie event allows the hospital to thank the community for their support and raises money for the foundation’s philanthropic endeavors. This year more than 350 people dined, bid on auction items, and rocked out with the Little River Band at Nora Mayo Hall. Sponsors contributed to put the event on and businesses donated items for the silent auction. It was a great night because so many people came together to support the foundation and make it an evening to remember. Throughout the year the foundation holds events to raise money for efforts which

ensure the greater Winter Haven community has the health care it needs and deserves. Communities like ours all over the country are competing for family doctors and specialists. Winter Haven is blessed to have some of the finest doctors and facilities in the country and they are attracted by the community’s support, like the work of the foundation. Our economic growth as a community depends on the availability of quality healthcare. People don’t want to live where quality healthcare isn’t available and businesses don’t want to build or relocate where people don’t want to live. Where we are today and where we will be tomorrow economically depends on a vibrant medical industry, and that is what the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation is all about. Focus Magazine would like to give a hearty thanks to the Foundation’s members, and all those that give, for work well done, for work that contributes to great health.

SCHOLARSHIP GIVEN TO HONOR LEGACY OF LATE COMMUNITY LEADER A Written By: Josh Lewis
scholarship funded by the Marlene Duffy Young Community Fund through the Community Foundation of Greater Winter Haven will be given on October 26, 2010 to a deserving student of Polk State College on behalf of the Winter Haven Young Professionals Group (WHYPG).
A $2,500 check has been gifted to Polk State College to be awarded in the Spring 2011 term to an undergraduate who meets criteria set forth by the WHYPG, a business networking organization of talented and motivated young professionals ranging in age from 21 - 40 in the Greater Winter Haven area. Among her many accomplishments, Marlene Duffy Young was the first mayor of Winter Haven. She served on the Winter Haven City Commission in the early 1980s, and later served on the Polk County Commission for two years until 2000. Her spirit of
community service burned bright everyday until she was tragically killed in a vehicle accident on May 22, 2008. Receiving the scholarship monies was Dr. Eileen Holden. “I had the good fortune of knowing Marlene Duffy Young. She was a passionate leader who always worked for the common good of our community. The faculty and staff at Polk State College are honored and grateful that the Winter Haven Young Professionals selected to make a meaningful difference in the life of a Polk State College student to help continue Marlene’s important legacy in our community. We also greatly appreciate the Community Foundation of Greater Winter Haven and the vital role it plays in making Polk County a great place to live, work and learn.” In addition to the funding, the recipient will also receive a free wtwo-year membership to WHYPG, a $120 value.

Cindy Price President of
The Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce Interview and Pictures by Brent Simmons
The Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce’s staff and volunteer directors work tirelessly for not just the businesses in our community but for all of us. Their goal of providing leadership and communication for local business operators is vital to our business and economic environment. As they succeed at delivering on these goals, they positively impact each one of us and enhance our daily lives and standard of living. As they work to help local businesses flourish they help create jobs and bring new opportunities for our neighbors, families, and friends. Because of the size and scope of the project and its impact on our community, their work with Legoland Florida is an example of how important their work is, but Legoland is just one project. Everyday they work on countless smaller projects that when added up have perhaps a larger impact than even Legoland. As 2010 draws to a close we thought it would be nice to hear from our business community about 2010 but more importantly 2011. We met with Cindy Price, recently installed as President of the Chamber. Cindy works for TECO, but she puts in countless hours helping to build a better community for all of us. Besides being the President of the Chamber, she is also on the Board for Main Street Winter Haven. She grew up in Auburndale and her love for this area is profound. She is a warm, friendly person who speaks her mind and knows that as we all work together, we can build a brighter future. FOCUS: Review the year and tell me what the Chamber has accomplished? Price: 2010 has been a year of many opportunities for Winter Haven beginning with the announcement in January that LEGOLAND® Florida would be built on the former Cypress Gardens property. As a result there is now a proposed $140 million project on the Chain of Lakes complex property that would bring new hotels, restaurants and recreation venues. There has also been significant new developments with regard to our downtown technology sector and our city has started the process of developing an economic development plan for the future. The Chamber has worked to support and participate in all of these processes at the same time we celebrate our Centennial Anniversary. FOCUS: What are you most proud of for 2010? Price: I think the Chamber enjoyed many successes during the year -- some big and some small. But the Chamber’s most visible efforts this past year involved our due diligence in learning about LEGOLAND and Merlin Entertainments, our new corporate citizens. The impending opening of LEGOLAND® Florida brings much opportunity for our area and many challenges for our hospitality community. We hope to use our knowledge and resources to help make Winter Haven a very child friendly place to be. FOCUS: The chamber is such a vital communications link for your members. Does any of the programs or events standout to you as particular important or successful from 2010? Price: Our members continue to rank our blog among the most valued services we provide. We also introduced a new weekly electronic newsletter called “First Thing” published every Monday morning and our members ranked it high in our annual member survey. With regard to events, our Centennial Annual Meeting was the largest in our history. The Board and our 2009-1010 President Howard King were very proud of the year’s programs and the participation of our members.

continued from page 21 FOCUS: In the upcoming year what’s new for the Winter Haven Chamber? Price: The Chamber has developed and is now implementing a new “tiered dues structure” that offers five levels of membership with various tools members can choose to grow their businesses. We are very excited about the potential for our members to build the membership that is most meaningful and useful to their business success. FOCUS: What do you expect in 2011 for the business community of Winter Haven?
will be determined by how well the community and area work with the park to grow the guest experience. We need great hotels with safe play areas, restaurants where kids eat free, outdoor events and festivals that will entertain and a genuine commitment to being a child and family friendly destination.
We are a committed city partner and look forward to the Centennial Celebration. We have several events under consideration to do our part.
FOCUS: The Winter Haven Chamber is as active a chamber as I’ve seen with a great staff and incredible members. What role do you see the chamber playing in the celebration of Winter Haven’s 100th year of existence?
Price: Our First Wednesday Breakfast series provide information for our members on promotions and public relations which will help as our businesses as the economic environment improves. Also, help our members become more comfortable with the social media environment.
Price: We’ve just celebrated our Chamber’s 100th year and have a true appreciation for the importance of our history and heritage.
FOCUS: What are your goals for the Chamber this next year?
Price: Winter Haven is on the threshold of great opportunities: growing technology core; LEGOLAND® Florida opens in October; a new downtown Trailhead Park with children’s play area; the potential of The Landings development on Chain of Lakes complex property; and a BSN Nursing degree addition at Polk State College are just a few of the reasons we have so much for which to prepare as well as be thankful.
FOCUS: What do you think our business community will look like on Dec 31, 2011? Price: A little healthier as the economy strengthens ... a littler prouder as we welcome LEGOLAND® Florida ... more technologically oriented as that sector continues to grow. I think it will be a good solid year of modest but steady progress. FOCUS: What else are you excited about? Price: Focusing on the continued strategic growth in our downtown area. Economic Development and Education are such important aspects in the overall health of our community. I am excited about the opportunities of the projects coming to our area. FOCUS: What else do you want the readers of this article to know? Price: Each of us can make a difference by buying local. Those daily decisions help our business community and from basic needs to gifts, local purchases help our local economy. Also, enjoying and appreciating the wonderful community that we live in—and the importance of working together—locally, county wide and regionally. What helps us, helps our county and what impacts the region or county, also impacts us. We need to all work together.
FOCUS: Legoland opens the end of 2011, what do you think will be the impact? Price: Base on the worldwide popularity of the LEGO brand, the impact will be significant. But the true impact in the long term

2nd Annual
Downtown
WINDOW DECORATING CONTEST
Karen Thompson,
T
Director Mainstreet Winter Haven
here is so much going on in Your Downtown this month. The competition is heating up for Main Street Winter Haven’s second annual window decorating contest. The creative ideas are flowing as downtown businesses, shops and restaurants dress up in holiday finery. Many people will remember Mike Potthast’s life-sized nativity display was last year’s winner. Be sure to check out all the beautiful windows and don’t miss your chance to vote for the People’s Choice award at Carols in the Park on December 4. And speaking of Carols in the Park, the official poster was designed by local fifth grader Trey Mixon. Downtown Wonderland is the theme and art students submitted some amazing design ideas. The decision was tough because there is so much talent in our community, but Trey’s depiction of the heart of downtown was the winner. Come to Carols in the Park, Sponsored by Wachovia Bank, to see all the winning posters on display. Our monthly Main Street Market Day has become the destination market for locals and visitors alike. Come downtown on Saturday, December 11 and see for yourself. Market hours are from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. You can pick up some organic produce and fresh fish, or opt for a fully prepared pasta dish to take home. Baked goods, specialty sauces and chutneys, fresh flowers, and wonderful gifts make Main Street Market Day the place to shop locally, meet friends and neighbors and just get out and enjoy the quality of life in Your Downtown. For some good old-fashioned holiday spirit, come to downtown Winter Haven. Ho Ho Ho!

Hartman’s Guns & Ammo D avid and Debbie are fantastic! I love the jewelry and Debbie has been more than fair every time I’ve shopped or taken an old piece to be repaired. David really knows the coin business, too. It’s impressive. Old fashioned service with quality products and knowledge. Very rare and refreshing! I could stop here because the poster of this review says a lot that I would say, but I want to expand on these comments and add the one problem I’ve found while doing business with Hartman’s. David, Debbie, and the crew at Hartman’s do provide, “Old fashioned service with quality products and knowledge,” as the poster stated. The old fashioned service starts with getting to know you. “We like to develop friendships first, and then a business relationship,” David has said. This is at the heart of what we call “old fashioned service,” because in the old days we did business with friends, neighbors, and family. As our world has grown our ability to do business with people we really know has diminished, but not at Hartman’s. They know that, having been in business since David was 17, businesses like theirs are all about relationships with their customers.
30
december 2010 myfocustv.com
They also know their business and their products. Listening to them discuss a coin collection recently inherited, or a starter pistol for a young lady, I have always been impressed with how much they know. This is really their number one product – their knowledge – and this product they are glad to share with you. In fact, bring in your coins and they will appraise the coins for you – at no charge! All they ask in return is that if you decide to sell the coins, you give them a shot at buying them. Now to the one problem – they have an identity problem. The sign says Hartman’s Guns and Ammo, but that is not all they do. When it comes to guns, I don’t think you can find a better place than Hartman’s. They know guns. They have a large selection of ammo, including hard-to-find shells. They have everything a hunter may need, or a person interested in home defense, or someone who is interested in getting started in any gun related sporting activity. Most importantly they again have the knowledge needed to be sure you get what you need and what works. They are a great gun store, but there is so much more to Hartman’s. Stop in and say

Your Locally Owned Bed Store Earning Your Trust for 26 Years! Polk’s Only Store with ALL Varieties of Beds and Mattresses! Becca lerned from her father to “be fair to people, work hard and charge a reasonable price.” That advice has served her, SleepWorld, and her customers for well over 26 years. “SleepWorld’s personal service sets us apart from the rest, we are the best bed experts and carry the best and longest warranties.” “We take the time to listen to what our customers’ needs are and find the mattress to fit their needs. I have spent over 26 years learning about mattresses and keeping up with the newest developments. It is very important to me to get the customer in the right bed.” Visit SleepWorld’s showroom in the 7,000 SF building with the smily face, and you will find the largest variety of mattresses in Polk County. “Before you buy a mattress, ask the sales person how long the store has been around,” says Becca. “So many have come and gone in the years that SleepWorld has been here. I built this building and this business, and have an “A” rating with the Better Business Bureau.” The mattresses at SleepWorld are warranted - some up to 20 years Non Prorated. Some other stores warranties are prorated mattresses. “Sometimes the best beds are ones you’ve never heard of. A Non Prorated Warranty is the best.” At SleepWorld you will find the best selection of Solid Wood Futons with thick Innerspring Mattresses, making these futons not only sturdy but as comfortable to sleep on as they are to sit on. “You’ve got to see these futons.” We have customers who come in and say, “Oh no, I don’t want a futon. Then when they sit down on one of ours, they are simply amazed at the comfort.” SleepWorld also carries a great selection of Adjustable Beds, Air Beds, Sofa Beds, Daybeds, Memory Foam, Latex, Bedroom Furniture, and both types of Waterbeds, Traditional and Soft side. Right now you can buy a queen two piece Premium King Koil Sping Support Mattress Set and get an ultra slim 32” LCD HDTV for $999, or a King set for $1,299. Our Coral Firm, or Plush Queen Set, regularly $799.95 is just $399.95, and the queen Coral Euro Pillowtop, regularly, $899 is on sale for $499. Those are just a few examples of our current special offers. SleepWorld also delivers your purchases and removes your old bedding. The 700 Club sent a crew down from Virginia Beach to do a story about this small business in the middle of a recession having it’s best year ever. The credit goes to God, our customers, and to being a locally owned and operated store in business for over 26 years. Most of our business is word of mouth referrals. Stop in soon. We would love to meet you.

New Year I
New Changes Written By: Joy Townsend
n the coming year, the downtown Winter Haven landscape will change dramatically as the new Chain of Lakes Downtown Trailhead Park takes shape. Several years in the planning, the new facility will enhance visits to downtown as it will be situated in a prime location between Third and Fourth Streets NW and Avenue F and Lake Silver Drive. It’s anticipated the new park, just a stone’s
throw from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Park on Lake Silver, will become a catalyst for downtown Winter Haven to become a more diverse and attractive destination. To accommodate special events, the park will feature a new transportation-themed playground that will be handicapped accessible. There will also be green space, a picnic pavilion, and 140 convenient parking spaces for attending downtown events, accessing the Chain of Lakes Trail, the nearby WHAT terminal and Winter Haven Senior Center. The site may be designated a
“park-and-ride” lot in the future. Construction on the $1.5 million project is already underway and is expected to last about nine months. About one-third of the project’s cost will come from a Florida Department of Transportation grant, with the City of Winter Haven funding the balance. While construction takes place, the weekly Thursday Farmers Market will be held on Fourth Street Northwest, adjacent to City Hall. When construction is complete, and the market will return to its original, but
greatly improved site, visitors and vendors will have access to amenities that include paved walkways, water fountains, nearby restrooms, trash receptacles, shade and more. This is just one project planned to enhance trail opportunities in Winter Haven. Extensions to the Chain of Lakes Trail are also being planned to the south from downtown to Avenue G SW and to the west to Lake Howard. Get ready to help celebrate the grand opening of the City of Winter Haven’s newest park in about nine months.

Angler’s Sports Bar and Grill A Written By: Brent Simmons
ngler’s opened for business on September 18, 2010, but the story doesn’t start there. It starts with Allen Prince and his wife Angie, a couple who decided to take a chance and live a dream. Allen had been a Polk County EMT for 15 years when he and wife Angie, who works at Winter Haven Hospital, decided Allen should open a restaurant.
They found a building, formerly a restaurant, and the family spent hundreds of hours cleaning and refurbishing the place. They paid a lot of attention to detail. They wanted a family sports bar, with an emphasis on seafood (Allen is a fishing guide and the family spends much time fishing and enjoying the water). They used personal things to decorate, like a huge California sailfish given to them by the friend who caught it. Allen used channel markers to welcome guests home. From the beginning this has been a family affair, and as Allen tells the story of each article on the walls, it feels like you’re in this family’s home. The family is still at it with Allen and company. Even the way the food is prepared is a reflection of their lifestyle. “We grill a lot of our entrees because we love to grill out and everything tastes better grilled. We even grill our Chicken Wings,” Allen said. This is a relaxed and casual family place. The day we were there the crowd was mixed with families and retirees enjoying lunch. It is the kind of place where we started up a conversation with the couple at the next
36
december 2010 myfocustv.com
table and felt like we had new friends when we left. A full liquor bar and a great sports bar menu, including Dakota Style Wings, provide plenty of variety. What is a Daytona Style Wing? “We deep fry the wings for just a little bit, then we add sauce and toss them on the grill. Last, we add more sauce,” Allen told us before explaining the name. “I have experimented cooking wings and had come up with this process to make the wings taste better. Then while researching wings, I discovered that this style of wings are called Daytona style.” At Allen’s suggestion, we had the Angler’s Fish Sandwich and a foot long hotdog with Chili and Cheese. The fish sandwich is made with a huge fillet and we had ours fried. The fish was white and flaky, a cousin I’m told to the grouper family. As I ate this light tasty fish on a warmed roll, I was reminded of the Florida Keys and all the great fish sandwiches I’ve eaten there. Served with fries, this sandwich was big and we happily shared it. The foot long hot dog is great sports bar fare and with chili and cheese it’s a meal by itself. With entrees running from $5.99 to $19.99 for the surf & turf, the menu is well priced and offers something for everyone (including a menu for kids). Stop by and give it a try. The food is good, and you’ll feel comfortable in the welcoming environment that Allen, Angie and family have created.
