his week I had coffee with a friend of mine who just left the newspaper industry after working in it for the last ten years. She said to me, “I think you’re really onto something here with Focus. You’ve hit a sweet spot. In a world where Facebook dominates the Internet, people want to know more personal information and stories than they do hard news.” I took this as a tremendous compliment because when Focus started nine years ago we set out to accomplish exactly that: share personal stories about the community to keep everyone connected. Over two years ago we launched our publication here in Winter Haven and have had the opportunity to meet and feature so many incredible people. A community is strengthened by the amount of people who give back, and Winter Haven has a plethora of philanthropic individuals. A perfect example of this is our spotlight interview with Julie Farish, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of East Polk County. Since 1987, HFHEPC has been investing into the futures of local, hardworking families in our community. They are gearing up to begin their 100th home. Check out this interview with Julie to learn a little more about her and gain a better understanding of how HFHEPC helps our community.

For our feature this month, we did something a little different. In light of Thanksgiving, we wanted to find out what people right here in our community were thankful for. We pulled in readers from all walks of life to share with us what it is they are most thankful for this year. From the McDonald’s employee, to the stay-at-home mom, to the successful business owner, everyone had something special to share. Remember to stop for a moment and focus on what you’re thankful for. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Life’s not about getting what you want, but about wanting what you’ve got.” We all have something our lives to be thankful for. Focus Magazine has always been about promoting the positive news in the community. We are so thankful to serve such a wonderful community as Winter Haven who has so many people actively involved in building this area to be the best it can be for its residents. Thank you so much to all the individuals who donate your time and resources to make this a stronger community.

It is amazing how fast this year is gone. At the time of this writing we are entering the holiday season and the next big holiday is Thanksgiving, a holiday inspired by being thankful.
on that as opposed to all the bad news I can have impact on the quality of my life. Being thankful makes life better.
Being thankful doesn’t just happen for most of us. Given the pressures of our normal lives it is easy to get bogged down in all that is wrong and everything that should be some other way. Being thankful is a practice, for some of us it may take a great deal of effort, but it starts with actively looking for things, even small things to be thankful for. Thanksgiving, as the original story goes, was a day of celebrating because of all the pilgrims had to be thankful for; however, now the holiday is a reminder to us to be thankful – to actively look at our lives for what we can be thankful for.
My mother used to tell us about a sign her first grade teacher had at the front of the room, it said, “I used to complain that I had no shoes, until on the road I met a man with no feet.” Maybe you, like me, get to a place where nothing seems as it should be and you hear yourself complaining about not having. As it has for my mother, this little quote always helps me remember that there is someone out there who has it worse than me. Like a river this thought carries me down stream to a place called, “You know I don’t have it so bad,” and I can be thankful for that.
The last couple of years have been hard on us all. Even if you personally haven’t been hit by the economic problems, you know somebody that has. People have lost their jobs, their homes, and in some cases their life savings. Then you add the two wars we are fighting, the apparent mess in government, and the constant nastiness of the political campaigns and it may seem there isn’t much to be thankful for; however, I have learned that there is always something to be thankful for and by focusing

We went out on the street to ask your neighbors what they were thankful for this year, and we present them here for you. Hopefully, they will remind you of things you can be thankful for. During the month of November 2010 I hope we can be a little more aware of what we have to be thankful for, and like the neighbors who shared with us, I challenge you to share what your thankful for with those around you.

Julie Farish Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Interview by Cheryl Johnston
Habitat for Humanity is all about hope – they build it! The international faith-based organization founded in 1976 relies on volunteers, sponsors, and donations to “Build Homes … Build Lives … Build Hope.” Its work endures. East Polk County’s affiliate group was established in 1987 and is celebrating its 100th home built in the area. Focus met recently with Julie Farish, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of East Polk County, to learn more about the organization and this amazing project. Focus: Julie, first tell our readers a little about yourself and your family. Farish: I am married to Tony Farish and have two sons, Mikel and Wayne, two grandchildren, Kayla and Nick and one great-grandaughter, Bella. Tony works as an Operations Director for ERMC at Eagle Ridge Mall in Lake Wales. Focus: How do you spend time when you’re not working? Farish: I stay very busy with my son’s baseball games and our family hunting trips. I am part of the Polk County Affordable Housing Advisory Committee and attend Calvary Assembly of God Church where we hold our annual Application night each year in April Focus: Where did you live prior to Winter Haven and how did you become involved with Habitat? Farish: I was born in Niles, Michigan and moved to WH in 1980. I worked for Scotty’s Inc. from 1983-2001, when I came to Habitat for Humanity of East Polk County (HFHEPC). I met Bob Hicks, the Executive Director of this affiliate while employed with Scotty’s as an outside Sales Rep. HFHEPC was one of the accounts I serviced. As times were changing with Scotty’s, Bob said “you need to come work for me”. At first the answer was no, but in 2001 I was offered the opportunity to start the first ReStore in Polk County for Habitat for Humanity of East Polk County. My 17+ years at Scotty’s gave me the experience to begin a new adventure and by God’s grace, he has placed me in the position of Executive Director.

The people you volunteer with, whether it’s the homeowner family or a group of students from a college, are all there to see a dream come true.
”
Habitat for Humanity is all about hope – they build it!
Focus: You’re passionate about this work, aren’t you? Farish: Yes, my joy comes everyday by helping God’s people in need. Watching their faces as the tears run down their cheeks when we hand them the key to their new home is priceless. All the communities in East Polk County are great to work with, too. The Cities & Government know the importance of affordable housing and work with us to achieve our mission of building decent affordable homes with God’s people in need. Focus: What would you say to encourage folks who might like to volunteer with Habitat? Farish: I encourage people to get involved because the feeling you come away with, “money can’t buy”. The people you volunteer with, whether it’s the homeowner family or a group of students from a college, are all there to see a dream come true. Volunteering is not just swinging a hammer, it could be working at the ReStore, furnishing lunch at the site, quilting with the Cornerstone Quilters or serving on one of our many committees. Focus: Would you give us an overview of the organization? Farish: Habitat for Humanity is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to build simple, decent, affordable housing in partnership with the community and deserving local families. HFHEPC began in 1987 with a dream and mission to help families in need in East Polk County. Now, 23 years later, house #100 will be a new start for a family. They will not only “Help build It” but pay a 20 year, zero interest mortgage to help the next family. I am blessed to have a very supportive staff and Board of Directors. Our ReStore staff, John, Pam Sam and Frank welcome people to shop, donate and save at the ReStore located at 3550 Recker Hwy. Winter Haven. Both new and gently used items are donated by the public and businesses throughout the community. JoAnne is our Volunteer Coordinator and she can help you to volunteer in the area that fits you best. Steve Farmer, our Construction Manager can teach you how to build a home and have fun at the same time. My Administative assistant Sam is my right hand, she helps all our families and runs a great office. Focus: Tell us about the home you’re building now. Farish: Our most current goal is to begin house # 100! This home will be dedicated in the honor and memory of one of our affiliate founders, Carroll Teeter. The Winter Haven Kiwanis Club asked to be a sponsor of this build. They were part of the seed money for the first home built by HFHEPC. Joining the Kiwanis Club as sponsors will be First

Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven and the Housing Finance Authority. Our approved family is a hard working single dad with 4 boys that keep him very busy. He holds two jobs and as required by Habitat puts in “sweat equity” hours by volunteering at the ReStore and the build sites. Focus: How do volunteers get involved and what can they expect? Farish: For those who long to make a difference in the lives of others, Habitat is a wonderful means to do that. Many corporations form work teams and students can even earn community service hours by helping us accomplish the dedication of a new home. It is most rewarding work. First, they should visit the website, www.habitateastpolk.org or our Facebook page to read the information and guidelines on the main page. Students must be at least 16-years-old. They can follow the links to provide contact information and/or donate. What they can expect is camaraderie, lots of smiles and handshakes, and maybe even some new friendships. They can expect to work alongside people from all walks of life – doctors, lawyers, sales representatives, schoolteachers, construction workers, retirees, and students – just ordinary people like you and me who would like to make a difference in someone else’s life. They don’t have to have construction skills. Our Habitat construction staff and volunteer Crew Leaders will teach them all they need to know. Focus: Julie, where do you see yourself in five years? Farish: In five years with God’s grace, I plan to stay with HFHEPC building more homes, helping more families in many different ways; also having a larger ReStore or a second location. Focus: Thank you, Julie, for all you’ve done to help so many. We look forward to the completion and dedication of your 100th build. Dear generous readers, for more information about HFHEPC visit www.habitateastpolk.org or call the office and Restore at 863-292-2256. Donations can be dropped off or picked up by appointment. business » business profile Andy Thornal 336 Magnolia Avenue SW Winter Haven, FL 33881 863-299-9999 www.andythornal.com For the folks at Andy Thornal Company living a life they love and doing something they love is not optional. They know that life is not a dress rehearsal and their philosophy is to get the most out of it. I believe it is the practice of this philosophy that have people coming back to visit and like me I’m sure they find it an adventure discovering what is new. What’s New - If you haven’t been in for a while you’ll find the store completely remodeled. The new look offers a fresh, open feeling and is focused on creating the experience of adventure.
Andy Thornal Company Y ou can’t go into this store and not realize that this is one unique store. In fact, it is well known to folks from literally around the world. It is unique because of three things, the store’s history, the store’s merchandise, but most importantly and less reported on is the philosophy of the owners.
The history of Andy Thornal Company has been greatly reported on, and for this report we will only briefly cover it. The store began in 1945 as a 700 square-foot retail outlet for Army/Navy surplus material in the same location the store occupies today, under the water tower in downtown Winter Haven. It has grown to over 14,000 squarefeet of retail space, and the products they carry have changed and grown to meet the desires of their customers and to fulfill their commitment to offering quality and value. Today, the store has an eclectic blend of merchandise, from hand-crafted knifes, outdoor clothes, fly-fishing supplies to estate jewelry and collectable Rolex watches. What do these apparently unrelated product lines have in common? Most of them you can’t find anywhere else. Secondly, they are high quality, functional, comfortable, and stylish products. Lastly, they fit into a category
20
november 2010 myfocustv.com
of products, I will call, the better things in life, because that is what the Andy Thornal customer is looking for and expects.
Important to this report is the fact that Andy Thornal, who took over the operation from his father in 1961, hired a 15 year old to help in the store. That young man was Scott Hart, currently president of the company. Later Ken Hart, Scott’s brother, and Allen Wyatt joined the team and now the three work together operating this diverse store. The mentoring and development of these three young men was as much philosophy of life as learning the business. The personalities of these three, the philosophy of Andy Thornal, and a determination to make it fun guide the products they carry as well as the way they do business.
“I remember one of my first days at work Andy came to me and said, “You don’t get a dress rehearsal for life, this is it, and we are going to have fun!” and boy have we,” Scott told me. That is the difference and you know it when you walk in, you may not know what it is, but these folks are having fun. They love what they do, and they make sure that what they offer are products they love, too. This comes through so clear when you began talking to anyone of the nearly 20 employees, some now 4th generation.
Also new, developed by Ken Hart, Andy Thornal Company has become the largest retailer of custom and hand made knives and they carry over 60 lines featuring Randall Made Knives.

city of winter haven A Written By: Joy Townsend
s the City of Winter Haven prepares for its Centennial Celebration in 2011, it’s also important to remember our past. Initially incorporated as a town, the Winter Haven Town Council, held its first meeting June 22, 1911. Officers were elected and a corporate seal was adopted. That seal features an orange tree and is still used today. City ordinances, or local laws, would soon be adopted and the new City of Winter Haven was off and running.
The City of Winter Haven has developed through the years to become the pleasant, distinctively different community it is today. The City will mark its historic 100-year anniversary with Centennial banners in the downtown area, as well as special Centennial letterhead and decals on City vehicles. As the Centennial year progresses, the City of Winter Haven will also offer many Centennial-themed celebrations. Watch for more information on events being planned to celebrate the Winter Haven Centennial. So far, planned festivities include
the Centennial New Year’s Eve Bash with exciting fireworks, entertainment and lots of fun. The event will be held December 31 on the shores of Lake Silver. Special events still in the planning stages include the Centennial Parade, Centennial Golf Tournament and My Winter Haven Centennial Art Show. Additionally, a Centennial Tree Planting, Centennial Time Capsule placement and Community Day at the Library will be planned. Not to be overlooked, on the official June 22, 2011, anniversary of the organizational meeting of the City of Winter Haven, a Special City Commission Event is being planned. Although City Commission meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of each month, to observe the historical date, this event will be held on a Wednesday
Civic organizations such as Main Street will be sponsoring special Centennial events, as well. Plus, many of the City’s existing annual events will have a Centennial theme added to them. From the earliest settlers who began to arrive in the early 1880’s, to present day, the City of Winter Haven has a rich history. Any community must change over time, but recalling history and how we got here is significant. Winter Haven’s history has been focused on citrus, Cypress Gardens and lakes, as well as historic events, people and organizations. As Winter Haven’s Centennial year progresses, look in Focus Magazine for additional stories about notable Winter Haven history. We invite everyone to join us at all these community Centennial events and more that will be planned while the City of Winter Haven remembers yesterday and begins the journey into the future.

It’s a Jeep Thing J eeps have been a popular vehicle since they were made famous during World War II. The Jeep was invented out of necessity for American troops to navigate the rough and varying terrain encountered throughout every theatre during the war. Since then, anything that allows people to get out on the open terrain has become very popular with the buying public – especially the Jeep. When you climb behind the wheel of a Jeep, you immediately get a feeling that you could drive over or even through the Grand Canyon, if you had to.

Jeep Wrangler 4-Door is All That submitted By: Brian West
The Jeep has evolved over the years into more than just an off-road vehicle. Now Jeep is a brand with several models. What was once just referred to as a “jeep,” must now be clarified as a Wrangler, depending on who you talk to. Just a couple of years ago, the traditional Jeep we’ve all come to know and love, realized its most recognizable change since it was first introduced some 60-70 years ago – the 4-door Jeep. It’s almost one of those ideas that when finally realized, the automaker had to question themselves, “Why didn’t we do this a long time ago?” It’s been a big hit for Jeep.
The Jeep Wrangler comes in three trim levels: Sport, Islander, Sahara, and the topof-the-line Rubicon, and all are available in the traditional 2-door or the Unlimited 4-door version. I spent some time with a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimted 4-door. There’s such a big difference with the additional 20 inches of wheel base and 2 extra doors. The 2 extra doors add 10 inches to the overall length. The ride is so much smoother than the traditional 2-door Jeep. Don’t get me wrong. This isn’t a Mercedes. This is still a Jeep. The suspension is still very tight for off-roading, but there is a noticeable difference in the comfort with day-to-day city and highway driving.
On the exterior, not much has changed. The 2010 Jeep Wrangler still has the same basic Jeep look. But that’s one of the things that set it apart from other vehicles. The body styling is timeless. It’s recognizable. Under the hood, there’s a 6-cylinder 202 hp engine. Most Jeep owners would agree there should be more power. This Jeep, just like its predecessors, leaves the driver longing for more power. The vehicle sure seems capable of handling additional power. All in all, there’s plenty of cargo room, leg room, cup storage and the like. It’s a Jeep, not a luxury vehicle, so if you’re a Jeep person, you’re likely to love the 4-door. If you’re interested in a new Jeep, visit our friends at Winter Haven Jeep and tell them you read about the Jeep in Focus Magazine.

dining & entertainment » dining profile though they are a steakhouse, their seafood selections or add-ons (Like adding shrimp or lobster to your steak dinner) are just as fresh and some have suggested that Outback is their favorite seafood restaurant, as well. Lunchtime is my favorite time to hit Outback. They currently have a great soup and salad deal for the lunchtime crowd, and I’m a big fan of their burger. From a quick gathering of friends to business associates on a tight time line, Outback offers customers the best of both worlds - quick lunches in a hurry, or a relaxed atmosphere to visit a while. The menu also has choices for various budgets. The Outback Special sirloin is a good cut of meat with all the trimmings for around $10. When I’m flush, I like the Filet. Either way you go, you can customize your steak dinner with the great seafood selections

utback, as many of you may know, started in Tampa and have grown to become a well known chain. One of the differences in their operational style is that they train managers in their system and then as they expand, they allow the local manager to buy into the store they run. This method has many benefits, but the first is that each store is well maintained by a well-trained person who has an interest in the restaurant. Patrons of Outback are rewarded with high quality, consistent food, great service, and a dining experience that is relaxed and fun. In Winter Haven the proprietor is Dawn Richards, who runs a tight ship. I’ve been to many Outback locations and in this store

several times. I have always been pleased with the staff and the service they provide. This is reflection of Dawn’s leadership style. Recently she took the whole team out for a day of fun at a water park. Investing in your employees, building team, and having fun is important to Outback and Dawn because they know that the investment pays off in customer experience and return visits. They also believe it is simply the right thing to do. Great service, servers that are friendly, professional, and fun are important but every restaurant is ultimately judged on the food they serve, and again Outback has done a great job. Everything starts off fresh, not frozen. Steaks or Seafood are prepared for you, and they don’t mind changing things a little to accommodate your particular taste. I have never had a bad meal at Outback. Even
outback steakhouse 170 Cypress Gardens Blvd. Winter Haven, FL 33880 863.295.9800 www.outback.com mentioned above. If you’re really strapped for time or want to have dinner at home you can always call ahead and pick it up curbside. Back to Dawn Richards: she cares about her store and her community. She is as committed to your receiving great food and service as anybody I’ve ever met in this business because this is her Outback and you are her community. By the way – my mother recommends the green beans – she loves them with the Outback Special Steaks.
