Her uncle Richard Miller can imagine that happening. He complimented, “Madyson puts her heart and spirit into everything she does. We know that with her involvement with this project, it will be a huge success, and animals at the Humane Society and elsewhere will greatly benefit from her efforts. She is an absolutely terrific young lady.” To encourage Madyson’s efforts, please help with the supply drive. She admitted that this is the first time she’s called people to action, but that it’s been a worthwhile effort. She added, “It’s time consuming, but at the same time, it’s easy and exciting because I love animals so much. I hope everyone who can will donate or volunteer to help at the Humane Society of Polk County. They will fall in love with the animals, too.”

Teen Puts Her Love for Animals into Action Help Madyson Miller with her Supply Drive for the Humane Society of Polk County

or anyone who believes teens can’t make a difference in their world, meet Madyson Miller, the girl who loves animals and puts that love into action. In September, the 15-year-old East Polk County native sophomore at Harrison School of the Arts organized a supply drive for the Humane Society of Polk County, where she has volunteered for the last three summers. The drive will continue until November 18, 2011. The daughter of Tiffani and Jeffrey Gozdur encourages animal loving locals to get involved. She said, “I hope everyone will donate because the animals we care for are always in need of new supplies or new homes. They are adorable because they love people.” At the family’s Auburndale home, Miller adores her 3 cats and 2 dogs. Younger

sister Paige, 7, also an animal lover, has two hamsters. What Madyson enjoys most about her Humane Society work, she said, is “I get to play with the animals, too.” Her grandmother Theresa Gozdur also noticed this passion. She offered, “Madyson has always had a high focus on the plight of animals and on helping animals in need.” Her aunt Crystal Bruce agreed. “Madyson has always had a special place in her heart for animals. She has put a lot of time and energy into this supply drive project.” Teenagers are bold when it comes to creating momentum for causes they embrace. Once Madyson conceived the idea for the drive, she worked with Humane Society manager Lisa Baker to create a list of frequently needed supplies and made posters for display throughout downtown Winter Haven and Lakeland. Next she spread the word even further via technology. She sent e-mails and created a Facebook event - “Supply Drive

- Chaired by Madyson Miller” to provide needed supply details and drop-off locations. Miller noticed when she volunteered that, “We always needed supplies. Some things we have too much of, and other things, not enough.” For those willing to donate, she also mentioned, “We will take anything, but we need the listed items most often.” This teen also loves science and musical theater, which is her chosen discipline at Harrison. She is busy presently with rehearsals for dance ensemble role in the school’s White Christmas presentation. Family friend Bonnie Parker was quick with praise for the newly inducted National Honor Society student’s “pleasant demeanor and concern for others.” She continued, “Madyson is a very conscientious and sensitive young woman who often looks for opportunities to volunteer in her community. She has spent many days at the Humane

etired USAF Lt. Colonel Dick Koch remains active recruiting supporters for the noble cause of Honor Flight West Central Florida. The former military journalist presents this new mission through an informative talk and powerful video to civic groups in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Honor Flight purposes to fly willing WWII Veterans to see the magnificent memorials built in their honor on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. According to Koch, these brave protectors “changed the course of world history and never asked for anything in return.” HFWCF, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, was established in late 2010 as an official Regional Hub of the National Honor Flight Network and one of 100 chapters in the U.S. Last year the groups rallied and raised funds to send 63,000 Veterans on the all-expense paid pilgrimage to see America’s tribute to their service. As part of the Network, HFWCF provides

end, 16-million Veterans survived. Today, only 1.87 million are alive. Florida, with 321,000 survivors, is second only to San Antonio, Texas. Of those, 32,000 reside in the West Central Florida district.

National and local sponsors include Allegiant, American, and Southwest Airlines, Arby’s, Bright House Networks, Chick-fil-A (4th St. N., St.Petersburg), Hilton Hotels Corporation, McDonald’s, TECO, and United Parcel Service. With their support and other generous individuals and groups, the local chapter has been very busy in 2011: Mission 1 flew 25 Veterans on May 3; Mission 2 on June 28 flew 71 Veterans; Mission 3 flew 72 Veterans on September 20; and Mission 4 for on October 29 flew 72 more, including 100-year-old Ann Left who served in the Women’s Army Corp.

The waiting list of more than 400 identifies many with disabling or life-threatening health issues. Time is running out because WWII Veterans are dying nationally at the rate of 1,000/day.

Each daylong trip concludes with public “Welcome Home” celebrations for the returning Veterans. Don’t miss the inspirational photos and comments on the organization’s Facebook page. Ritz Theatre Lovingly Restored to a Living Dream

As the youngest member of the Ritz 100 board of directors, Clay McKown is excited about the multi-purpose facility will keep him from traveling and spending money of his own community for great entertainment.

Winter Haven landmark is making history again. The latest downtown buzz is all about the reopening of the newly restored Ritz Theater.

Originally opened in 1925 as the Williamson Theater, The Ritz has been renovated and updated for use as a multi-purpose facility, enhancing the downtown arts district appeal even more. Thank you, Ritz 100, for this priceless gift. Vaudeville shows and silent movies were the primary presentations when the theater was built. With its first facelift in 1932, the name changed to The Ritz because business partners E.J. Sparks and F.E. Williamson had both previously owned theaters bearing that name. Through the years since, many have enjoyed films, performances, civic gatherings, and even teen dances. With the advent of multi-screen cinema complexes and deterioration that comes with age, The Ritz seemed destined for destruction. Fortunately in 1997, a group of concerned locals formed a non-profit corporation, The Ritz 100, to purchase the building and make plans for its future. One hundred citizens desired to save the historic theater enough to contribute $1,000 each and a dream was birthed. Their mission has been to restore the theater to its original glory and present it to the community of Winter Haven and Polk County. A feasibility study indicated a definite need for a multi-use facility in the Main Street District. The goal has been to maintain the historic integrity of the building while developing varied uses that will ensure the project’s economic self-sufficiency for years to come. Today because of their foresight and fondness for the nostalgic, that dream has evolved through the stages of fascination and vision into a ready reality. Fourteen years and 2.6 million dollars later, the grand mistress of days gone by will once again welcome her citizens and Central Florida visitors into the beautifully restored source of community pride.

The Ritz, located at 263 West Central Avenue, is sure to draw crowds to downtown Winter Haven for functions ranging from classic films to community rallies, from dance recitals to weddings, and from fundraisers to parties for every purpose. With the restoration of the tiered floors, orchestra pit, and stage, the venues are almost limitless. The space can be used for civic events, cultural gatherings, and the educational needs of the community. It will also be available as a rental facility for public use. Holidays provide the perfect opportunities to highlight the progress and promise of this community classic. The new Ritz reopened with a fundraiser, “Twilight at the Ritz,” on October 28, 2011. The evening of “spooky but fabulous” fun with costumed guests, dance contests, games, auctions, a fortune-teller, food by Outback Steakhouse and music by Brass Heart Band was definitely a crowd-pleaser. Stella Heath, Executive Director of The Ritz Theater referred to the pre-celebration gathering of sponsors and invited guests for the first community event as a “Champagne christening.” With 19 events already on the calendar, its apparent that The Ritz will be a popular choice for performances and festive occasions. This beloved bit of history will definitely be “the public’s showcase.” Next up will be a platform art show on November 12 and a community Thanksgiving event is to be announced. December is looking busy with Main Street Christmas on the 2nd, a wedding on the 10th, and the “Jim Stafford - Home for Christmas” show December 15-18. What a special treat this will be for families. With the support of Jim and Ann Stafford and the exposure he will bring though his own Branson, Missouri theater, live entertainment will be a frequent offering. His very musically talented children, Sheaffer Stafford and Georgia Garland will also round out the “family entertainment.” When Brian West interviewed Stafford for Focus Magazine in October, Stafford shared this bit of good news: “You know, I feature The Ritz on a 40-foot big screen at every Branson performance because it’s part of the backdrop of

my hometown.” Jim continued, “It’s perfect that I’m coming home to perform there – we’re excited.” Needless to say, Mr. Stafford, Polk County is excited, too. Jim Pruitt shared his thoughts, saying, “I am a Winter Haven downtown merchant and actually started my business career downtown. I remember when it was the hub of our community, when everybody came downtown. I was also here in the ‘80s when no one came. I felt compelled to help restore the Ritz because it has been the catalyst that gave downtown it’s identity and today it can be the anchor we need to maintain a healthy balance of traffic between the attractions and downtown.” Kathy Buldini, a BB&T portfolio manager, has served on the board for six years, since the fall of 2005. She expressed her delight about the great future she sees for the venture. “I am really excited because it’s wonderful for downtown Winter Haven and people will come in the evening, too. This great space is intended to be truly multi-purpose and was designed from the beginning to accommodate different functions. With no fixed seating, the space provides another place to hold events such as class reunions, corporate meetings, and more intimate gatherings. It will be great for business in general. With the city’s desire to make downtown a focal point for the arts, The Ritz gives people a reason to come.” One thing that excites the youngest Ritz 100 board member, Clay McKown, is the economic affect. He said, “I’m happy The Ritz is here because I won’t need to travel distances and spend money for great entertainment outside my own community.” He added, “I am very enthusiastic about the future of available at The Ritz - the multi-purpose aspect. We are committed to keeping plenty of activity happening that will continually bring engage people with the downtown district.” Heath encourages everyone to get involved in adding the finishing touches still needed like carpet, curtains, chairs, lights, and sound. Watch for fundraisers and do your part. “We are making history,” Heath said. “The Ritz has been given back to the community for its use and we’re expecting that they will enjoy this dream come true.” In the end, it’s all about community and The Ritz Theater and Ritz on Central is destined to become the downtown center of cultural and social activities. Winter Haven Hospital Foundation Building Relationships That Save Lives I

n a struggling economy with so much discussion and media regarding healthcare reform and the uncertainty found within these changes nationwide, the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation continues to grow and raise funds for important patient services and needs. Funds raised by the Foundation touch lives and provide hope for patients and their families. These contributions make possible medical education, new technology, scholarships, equipment, state-of-the-art facilities, and top quality professional staff. A visit to the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation’s homepage greets readers with an outreach statement that speaks to the very heart of why…how…and what the Foundation does in the Greater Winter Haven Region. A 20-minute talk with Foundation Chairman, Eric Adamson, or Joel Thomas, Winter Haven Hospital VP/ DMPR, and the final two sentences paint a picture of the importance of their efforts; “Gifts to the Foundation reach far beyond our walls. Gifts to the Foundation touch every facet of our community by facilitating outreach programs, support groups, charity care, and community health fairs.” The Foundation is a not-for-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees made up of regional, civic, and business leaders who serve without pay or compensation. Throughout our conversation, Joel repeatedly reminded me that it is the Board of Trustees and generous visionary local individuals and organizations that have made the Foundation so successful. He stated he and his staff only serve as facilitators to their vision. The start and end objective of each new campaign, event, or outreach effort is that the Foundation only exists to support Winter Haven Hospital’s efforts in providing the best quality care for patients. As a local business owner, Eric isn’t a stranger to fundraising as he and his wife, Susan, have been involved for many years in giving back to the community. Eric who is a shareholder of Adamson + Co., P.A. in Winter Haven shared that there is no greater cause than that of the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation. He was invited to serve by several Foundation Trustees, people he grew up with that were on the board. From that point on he’s been heavily involved.

One of the Foundation events that Eric leads personally is the Mountain Lake Golf Invitational. This event is a “friend-raiser,” that is to say it is a “Thank You” for the friends of the hospital and the foundation. The funds raised at this event have been used for everything from providing scholarships to purchasing medical equipment and providing professional training. “Scholarships are given to Winter Haven Hospital employees to help advance their careers,” said Joel. “For example, the funds can help nurses who desire to advance their degree or support services staff seeking further education.”

There is no doubt that fundraising can be challenging during these economic times, but “when the challenge involves helping to change lives, people respond,” said Eric. His passion for the Foundation is matched by the other Foundation Trustees who are a dynamic force for the good of healthcare in Winter Haven. “We have a lot of energy and successes for a relatively new organization. I want people to know what we do. I left a Winter Haven Hospital Board of Trustees meeting recently where some of us took an additional 30-minutes in the hall discussing fundraising. That’s engagement!” Eric shared.

We all know somebody who has or will need medical care. It could be our family, friends, or neighbors and we can rest comfortably knowing that our community leaders are working hard at the Foundation to make possible the care we will receive during our times of need. Bringing the community together and connecting the foundation’s mission to patients is important. Patients are our primary concern. “The most important factor in delivering state-of-the-art health care isn’t bricks and mortar or machines,” said Joel. “It’s about making sure, as a community, we have the best professional manpower. Our nurses, physicians, and support staff are the heart of Winter Haven Hospital.”

From that hallway meeting we will now move swiftly to another “fun-raiser event;” a term with which he credits Joel. Board members waste no time in moving toward new efforts that will assist in meeting foundation goals. It is this approach that clearly explains the great success of their initiatives. There was not one question asked of Eric about his involvement that did not in some way include fundraising and networking to advance the foundation’s

future private fundraisers held for the Foundation’s benefit. A great example of this has been The 100 Golf event and a newer event sponsored by The Lewis Family, Swing for the Cure Golf Tournament. Josh and Jeff Lewis and their friends have created something very special with this new event. Last year they took it to the next level when they asked their friend, international golf professional, Fuzzy Zoeller, to be the keynote speaker. All of these private fundraisers are providing support for specific causes and centers of excellence at Winter Haven Hospital. Another very exciting new event hosted by John and Tracey Scheck of Winter Haven will take place this spring. The inaugural Polk County Cup tennis tournament will be held at Lake Region Yacht and Country Club. The funds raised through this event will benefit the Regency’s Center for Women and Infant’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU.) Joe Thomas affirmed the effort, saying, “We are extremely grateful for these community leaders’ work on behalf of the foundation.” The word “relationships” continued to pop in and out of the conversation, along with the importance of developing new board members and working with young professionals to bring new ideas and new leadership to the foundation’s efforts. Events are only the tip of the iceberg in telling the story and seeking funds. Board members and staff continuously manage the Annual Fund,- a rolling campaign that seeks to raise unrestricted dollars for the most current and urgent needs of the hospital. We also encourage everyone to remember the Foundation in their will and estate plans. On average, Eric stated, the Foundation transfers about $250 thousand dollars a year to the hospital for patient care services and staff development. In some years, funds transferred transcend that amount to the millions. When this happens, it allows the hospital to purchase items such as the new daVinci® Robotic Surgical System now being utilized at Winter Haven Hospital’s Center for Urology.

found out about this delightful restaurant from my wife, who is from the Windy City and loves anything with Chicago in its name. She is always lamenting that good Chicago Style pizza is hard to find in her adopted home, so when she told me she had tried this place and thought it was the best Chicago Style pizza south of, well south of the south side of Chicago, I had to give the place a try.

The Chicago Hub is a family run place that is conveniently located near downtown Winter Haven and just a few minutes away from LegoLand. Originally opened as the Pizza Hub it was transformed into The Chicago Hub in May of this year by Polk County native Steve Peacock. After a career in law enforcement, and after having developed a true love of Chicago cuisine, Steve decided it was time to have some fun and do something different. The restaurant business is in his blood as his grand parents ran a successful barbeque restaurant when he was growing up. Stepping into The Hub is like stepping into Chicago. Pictures of famous Chicago landmarks adorn the walls and the ambience sets the tone for the food. All the food including the sausage is homemade from

family recipes, and it is true Chicago fare. Ninety percent of Steve’s regulars are from Chicago and they agree, in fact, Steve wonders who is left there.

I have tried many of their dishes and found each one to be delightful. Their fresh made Alfredo sauce is a favorite, but the deep dish pizza is the real star of the menu. From the crust up everything is fresh and if it is made it is made onsite. It takes 25-30 minutes to prepare a pie and patrons are warned about the time. Call in early if you’re on a tight time schedule, but don’t miss it – it is a treat. The hub is open for lunch or dinner Monday through Saturday. They have a limited deliver area, but will deliver larger orders to local businesses. “The reason to come in and give us a try is our incredible Chicago Cuisine, but we know the reason people come back is because of our excellent customer service. We don’t want folks to just eat and run, we want them to soak up the experience,” Steve said.
